oval and the sporting complex had been used in the past, there is no way they could be officially designated. Local resident Dale Cook in a letter to the Mail called for pumps to be installed in the Yarra River that runs along the east boundary of the oval, saying the oval and sports centre provided a ‘refuge’ during the 1983 fires. “A lot of people don’t have a last resort and while you can plan for it, the biggest problem is if there is no warning - if the worst happens and you don’t get that warning,” she said. Unofficially emergency services organisations acknowledge that the Warburton oval will become a gathering place for those who don’t leave and find themselves needing a place to run to. But Ms Wositzky says anyone who finds themselves in that situation will face enormous risks. “For people to go and stand on the Warburton Oval, they will be subjecting themselves to a level of radiant heat that has not been safe enough for a NSP,” Ms Wositzky said. Warburton residents will also have an opportunity to get serious about planning with the Warburton Emergency Planning Group hosting a free bushfire planning workshop on Tuesday, 19 November at 7pm at the Warburton CFA. Co-ordinator Kevin Bargar said the small group sessions would assist in preparing for a range of fire scenarios with hands-on, practical guidance from CFA. Phone 0438 081 252 for further details. The East Warburton refuge will be open from 10am to 3pm. For details phone Yarra Ranges Council on 1300 368 333.

UPPER Yarra residents need to plan for their own survival in a bushfire. That is the unfaltering message being driven home by the CFA and Yarra Ranges Council as the whole of Victoria, including the particularly high-risk stretch between Millgrove and Reefton, looks ahead to the ‘fire season’. Announcing an open day on Saturday 16 November for East Warburton residents to get to know their new, official, community fire refuge last week, Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley linked the opportunity for those residents to “work on their own bushfire survival planning” as part of the open day. The refuge is part of a pilot project that includes buildings at Ferny Creek in the Dandenongs and at Blackwood near Daylesford opening this year. Mr Lapsley said another fire refuge originally mooted for Millgrove as part of the pilot would not be open, with more work needed on the building located at the local primary school. The Millgrove Recreation Reserve however has been assessed as a Neighbourhood Safer Place - Place of Last Resort, and is awaiting official designation by Yarra Ranges Council. Warburton, however, remains without a designated ‘Place of Last Resort’ with the oval, still seen by many in the community as just that, failing to meet radiant heat and other criteria needed to make it ‘official’. Mr Lapsley and Yarra Ranges Bushfire Shelter Options officer Helen Wositzky say there was no simple answer for Warburton, and while the

Old times’ sake By JESSE GRAHAM A CELEBRATION of Marysville through the ages hit the Community Centre on Saturday night, as those with links to the town dressed up for a night of reminiscing. The Marysville 150th Year Celebration Ball was held on Saturday 9 November as the culmination of the year’s anniversary events. Visitors were invited to dress in the era of their choice and were treated to music from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s from the 16-piece Swingland Band, with around 260 people attending on the night. The Marysville and District Historical Society ran a PowerPoint and audio-visual presentation of the town’s history, displaying hundreds of photographs from the past. Marysville Football Club president Graeme Haycraft was the Master of Ceremonies. Chair of the ball’s organising committee Christine Adams said the night was a fantastic community event that was 150 years in the making. “I’m still getting over it it was an absolutely fantastic night.” Ms Adams said the community converted the basketball stadium in the centre into a ballroom for the night, with visitors bringing their own food and wine to help celebrate. Historical cars were brought to the community centre to add to the atmosphere and Ms Adams said the costumes that

Jacqui and Ian Pearson got dressed up for Marysville 150th anniversary ball. Picture: BARRY THOMAS community members adorned helped to seal the night as a success. “Everybody I’ve spoken to has talked about what a wonderful night it was,” she said. “The variety of outfits that people wore added to the whole atmosphere.” At the end of the evening, Ms Adams was crowned Queen of the Ball, alongside King Callum Fiske, Princess Haley Fiske

and Prince Ethan Colussi. She thanked the community and everyone involved in the 150th celebrations this year and the ball and said that she was seeking stories to submit into a time-capsule, to be buried in Gallipoli Park for the next 50 years. For more information on the Marysville time capsule, call Christine Adams on 0409 503 591.

Pay up, say anti-loggers By JESSE GRAHAM ANTI-LOGGERS are demanding more than $60 million from VicForests as unpaid dividends for logging forests, although the timber company said its payments are in line with profits. Members of MyEnvironment, Healesville Environment Watch Incorporated (HEWI) and the Knitting Nannas of Toolangi (KNOT) delivered an invoice to the offices of VicForests in Healesville and Melbourne at 11am on Friday 8 November. The invoice totalled $61 million that the environmental groups said is owed from six years of not paying dividends. VicForests representative Andy

“The 2011 annual report contained a similar proposal to ‘pay a dividend of $1,260,000 in October 2011’, but this has never been paid, he said. “Although $61 million is a substantial sum, it is a very reasonable amount to expect in exchange for access to a massive and valuable public resource. VicForests Director of Corporate Affairs Nathan Trushell said the focus of the company was not just on its short-term profitability but on the long-term sustainability of the industry. He said the industry had reduced the amount of timber it was cutting in order to protect the resource. “Harvest levels in Victoria’s for-

McGuire accepted the invoice from the environmental groups and said he would pass it on to the accounts department, before returning to his office. According to head of HEWI Steve Meacher the number is calculated from a VicForests performance review for the Treasury in 2010 that the company should produce a return on equity of 15 to 20 per cent. Mr Meacher said the unpaid dividends were calculated on the lower percentage figure and that, while VicForests had proposed a $250,000 dividend for the state government, he had doubts about it being paid. “This is inadequate and there is no guarantee it will ever be paid, he said.

THE Yarra Ranges has a new leadership team and, for the first time in its 19-year history, both the top roles have been awarded to women. A special mayoral election was held last night at the Yarra Ranges Council chambers in Lilydale, which saw Ryrie Ward Councillor Fiona McAllister pitted against Lyster Ward Councillor Samantha Dunn for the role of mayor. Walling Ward’s Cr Len Cox, who nominated Cr Dunn, spoke on the importance of the election before the matter was put to a vote by the councillors. “The mayor leads the council and is a servant of the council in many ways - the council is very, very much, to a great degree, judged by the way the mayor talks and behaves, he said. “They’re not just a councillor for one ward - they’re a councillor for nine wards and it is, to me, a very important and really great job. He said that the incoming mayor would have to have a “good brain,

mayor, marking the first time that two women have taken the roles at the same time. Cr McAllister said she appreciated the honour and the opportunity of being elected mayor and that she was not stepping into the role lightly. “I’m stepping in with a fairly strong body of knowledge, she said. “I will continue to appreciate the support and guidance from my councillors ... and will certainly make sure I am an inclusive, open and good representative of the Yarra Ranges Council over the coming 12 months. The role was previously held by O’Shannassy Ward Councillor Jim Child. Cr McAllister thanked the outgoing mayor for his work in the previous year and Cr McCarthy said she was looking forward to working with Cr McAllister over the next year. Our thoughts for the fallen The state T of

affairs Christine Fyffe MP Member for Evelyn

THIS week, we pay tribute to the brave Australians who did not return home from war. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause for one minute to remember those brave Australian sailors, soldiers and airmen who have made the supreme sacrifice. It was at this point in 1918 when the

We must learn from our mistakes of the past and ensure that our modernday veterans are cared for, despite our personal views of war, whatever they may be... Christine Fyffe

guns fell silent and World War I came to an end. The Great War claimed more than 37 million lives, including 61,513 Australians. In total, 102,784 Australians have laid down their lives in conflict over the years.

This is roughly equal to the total population of the Yarra Ranges. In Parliament last week, I came across an old piece of legislation named the Limbless Soldiers Trust Act 1942.

Community Diary

I found it sobering to think that there were so many veterans who had lost an arm or a leg that Victoria needed to establish specific laws and trusts. It is confronting to imagine voting on such legislation in today’s world. As the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq draw to a close, and our involvements in East Timor and Solomon Islands wind down, we pause to reflect the contribution Australians in uniform continue to make around the world. Thousands of Australian military families will now be able to rest easier as their loved ones return home. We must learn from our mistakes of the past and ensure that our modernday veterans are cared for, despite our

personal views of war, whatever they may be. Our veterans give years of their lives in service to Australia and are worthy of special attention. While there are thankfully fewer families who have lost loved ones in service, we must also ensure they receive the utmost care. To all of our veterans and to all families of the fallen, on behalf the community, thank you. As always, if you would like assistance with any Victorian Government matter, please feel free to contact my office on 9735 3208, at christine. fyffe@parliament.vic.gov.au, or visit at 143 Main Street, Lilydale.

The letter of the law By MELISSA MEEHAN A MAN with hundreds of pieces of stolen mail will be charged to the full letter of the law after he was arrested driving a stolen car last week. Lilydale CIU Detective Senior Constable Matt Gill said police were still sorting through the stolen letters after finding the stash when they pulled over a stolen car on Thursday. “There was stolen mail throughout the car - the car was full of it - we found mail in the boot, backseat and front seats,” he said.

“We still don’t know the exact number of letters found - but we believe there is hundreds.” Sen Const Gill said the majority of the stolen mail from letterboxes found in the car was from all over the Yarra Ranges, but said there was mail from as far away as the Whitehorse and Monash areas. The 33-year-old man, of no fixed address, is believed to have links to the Mount Evelyn area, but police believe he was originally from interstate. “We believe that he was trawling

through the mail, picking and choosing what he was taking,” he said. “We believe if he found a credit card or bank card he would take that and then come back a few days later to get the PIN code.” Of the mail already sorted, Sen Const Gill said it looked as though the man targeted one street at a time and would take mail from a number of houses in the one area. Police are also investigating whether the man is linked to the theft of several stolen wallets from unlocked cars in the

Yarra Ranges and believe he had made a number of purchases using the stolen cards at Chirnside Park Shopping Centre. Sen Const Gill said the man is expected to face separate charges for each piece of stolen mail as well as a number of thefts and deceptions and has been remanded in custody. He said that the owners of the stolen mail would be contacted by police, and asked people in the area expecting letters including new credit cards and PIN codes to be aware of the thefts. It’s the slithery season By JESSE GRAHAM SUMMER is the season for slithery invaders to visit bushy backyards and an expert has offered some advice to reduce the chance of residents being bitten by snakes. Chum Creek resident Kath Holton had planned on moving some pot plants to mow her front lawn at around 11.30am on Sunday 2 November. She received a shock after moving one of the plants and noticing a metrelong tiger snake curled up on her lawn, just 15 centimetres from her hands. Ms Holton said she tried to ward off the snake by giving it a fright with a long rake and a lawn mower, but the snake would slither back and attempted to bite both of the tools. The snake was eventually pushed far from the house and Ms Holton said she would clean up around her house to stop herself from being caught unawares again. Healesville Sanctuary’s senior reptile keeper Mike Swan said snakes were significantly more active in the months between September and April.

While he encouraged any residents living near bushy areas to clean their properties to reduce the chance of snakes in the vicinity, he said it was almost impossible to completely snakeproof a property. “You could build a smooth wall a couple of metres tall, without any holes or cracks, but that’s just not practical,” he said. “The idea is to deter - you shouldn’t let rubbish build up, keep things clean and tidy and don’t encourage rodents, as that will attract snakes.” Mr Swan said it’s important for people to keep an eye on the ground when walking in bushy areas and to not touch a snake if encountering one. “Treat all snakes you encounter with caution - move back away from it and don’t attempt to kill it,” he said. “The best thing to do is to call a licensed snake removalist - someone who’s experienced with these kinds of things.” The seven species of snakes found around Victoria are the Mainland Ti-

bourne are venomous to greater and lesser degrees,” Mr Swan said. “But there are no degrees of deadness - if you’re bitten by a snake, call an ambulance.”

By JESSE GRAHAM GRAPE enthusiasts are in for a treat as the Yarra Valley Grape Grazing Festival returns to the area for the first time in five years. Next year’s Grape Grazing Festival, which is to be held from 14-16 February next year, will return following a grant of $30,000 from the State Government earlier this month. The festival has not been held since the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 and Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Louise Asher, said the return of the festival next year will increase visitors to the valley. The event drew over 20,000 visitors each year before its hiatus in 2009 and is expected to have more than 50 venues participating in next year’s festival. Ms Asher said the Grape Grazing Festival showcases the depth and diversity of the Yarra Valley’s food, wine and tourism industry and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe said the return was good news. “The 2014 Grape Grazing Festival will feature a refreshed format which will see the festival extend from two to three days and showcase many aspects of our region,” Ms Fyffe said. Ms Fyffe was one of the founding members of the festival in 1988 and said the changed format will display many of the attractions of the valley, beyond its well-known cellar doors and winemakers. New area for Guy? By JESSE GRAHAM PLANNING Minister Matthew Guy could run for Yarra Valley’s new electorate next year, but his office declined to confirm or deny rumours that he was vying for the position. With speculation rife that he would be running for the seat in the November 2014 State Election, The Mail contacted Mr Guy’s office recently. A representative for Mr Guy said his office refused to comment on the situation currently, despite the ABC and metropolitan publications maintaining that he was vying for the seat, making the issue a talking point in the Yarra Valley. The new electorate, which was established last month under changes to the electoral boundaries, will run from Warburton through to Healesville, Yarra Glen and Mansfield.

As a result of the change, whoever is elected next November will represent most of the Yarra Valley, with the exception of Seville and the surrounding area, which remain in the Evelyn electorate. The changes saw the electorate of Seymour, which MP Cindy McLeish currently sits in, abolished and divided into three, with boundaries moving the former electorate into the Yan Yean, the Eildon and Euroa electorates. At the time of the change, Ms McLeish said that there were still discussions to be had about which electorate she would chose to run in, but added that her priority until the election was her current seat. “First and foremost, until the election next year, I remain committed to serving those across the Seymour electorate,” she said. “I will be working with the Liberal Party to determine the best course of action.”

Countr y racing delights By MELISSA MEEHAN AND KATH GANNAWAY SPRING CARNIVAL made its way to the Yarra Ranges last week as punters and fashionistas made their way to race days held at Yarra Glen and Healesville. Yarra Valley Racing chief executive Brett Shambrook said Melbourne Cup Day resulted in a large crowd come through the gates and that the crowd was well behaved. “It was a great day weather wise and we had a good turnout,” Mr Shambrook said. “Everyone was really well-behaved too, so that was really good

to see.” Oaks Day, also held at Yarra Glen Racecourse, was a little less hectic with punters enjoying the cloudy but humid day on the grass. Healesville Amateur Racing Club had a great start to their season on the Saturday, with sunshine, rows of marquees trackside and picnics galore under the famous Pin-oaks. HARC president David Purcell said the committee was delighted with the day with a sensational crowd determined to have a fantastic day of country racing. “We’re looking forward to a successful summer season,” he said.

Rain gauge

I NOTE with interest two articles in the Mountain Views Mail of 29 October concerning Yarra Glen and Coldstream. Both spokespersons, Mr Galteri for Coldstream and Mr Lagerway of Yarra Glen, don’t seem to realise they have a great visitor attraction right on their doorstep. I speak of the unused rail line from Lilydale to Yarra Glen which has been unused since the ’70s. This line branches off the Warburton-Lilydale rail trail and could be a rail trail to Coldstream and Yarra Glen which I believe would bring benefits to both towns so Mr Galteri and Mr Lagerway get motivated and lobby councillors and politicians to make better use of this taxpayers land. Ray Donkin, Healesville.

I WAS dismayed to read what had been printed for my October rainfall report. The report I sent in read “60.8mm on 19 days” and this was published in the Mail of Tuesday 5 November, as “670.8mm over 129 days”. How could anybody make a mistake like that? If a correction and apology is not published as soon as possible I will no longer submit monthly rainfall reports to the Mail. Alma Mitchell, Healesville. (Rainfall reader for Melbourne Water since 1965).

Grave loss

TO THE person or persons who keep taking the artificial flowers from my husband and my parents’ graves at the Healesville Cemetery, please have a good think. Would you like it if it were either of your parents’ graves? In the last 12 months I have replaced them, on both graves, many many times. Last week I renewed them again and they were gone by the second day. Please leave them alone and find something more constructive to do with your time. B Penrose, Healesville.

I sincerely apologise for the error. As for explaining how it could happen, I can only fall back on the the ‘typo’ as coming anywhere near to an explanation. I am tempted to say I was thinking of the great flood of 1934, but that wouldn’t explain how October became almost a ‘quarter’ rather than a month. The Mail appreciates the professionalism and the diligence of Mrs Mitchell, and all our rainfall contributors, and recognise they each have long-established reputations for accuracy. I’m sorry I let the team down. Kath Gannaway, Mail Journalist.

imposed by the Victorian Department of Health on similar hospital based rehabilitation facilities. There is no accreditation process. There is no regulatory body that maintains a standard of practice. In other countries there are numerous examples of a monitoring body having a direct impact on the drug and rehabilitation service provided by Narconon. In Quebec, the head of a regional health agency said he had no choice but to shut down a Scientology-based drug rehab-Narconon. In Holland this year the Health Care Inspectorate put Narconon under six months of special monitoring because of concerns about patient safety. The examples are numerous of both questionable practice and the need for monitoring. My plea to you our town planners is this please do not approve Narconon’s application to change the use of Green Gables to an education facility. If Narconon are allowed to relocate who is going to hold them accountable? Who is going to ensure neighbouring residents, the primary school and the Warburton community in general are not exposed to the type of incidents that have occurred at the current isolated facility? Please take into account that the incidents in the past have happened with 20 to 25 clients on site. How will those problems be managed when the numbers swell to the proposed 80 clients on site at Green Gables? The local community should not have to pay the price for Narconon’s greed and self-interest. Nicole Fox, Warburton.

HEALESVILLE’S Bryn Jones and daughters Kirsty and Kylie are holding fund-raising events for Alzheimer’s Australia Vic in memory of their loving wife and mum Anne Jones. A Ride to Remember - Yarra Valley will take place along the Warburton Trail on Sunday 17 November - a year to the day after Anne died following six years of living with dementia with Lewy bodies. Kylie said her mum was a happy, vivacious, loving woman who was loved and admired by all who knew her. “On the first anniversary of Mum’s passing we wanted to do something positive to honour her memory and help to make a difference to somebody else’s life,” she said. A warm-up event held in Healesville on Sunday 3 November was a great success both in terms of raising awareness of the ride and kickstarting the fund-raising. Personal trainer Heather Christie, with a little help from four friends, took on the A Ride To Remember

Treadmill Challenge reaching the 100 kilometre target in nine hours and raising $1890 in donations. The family and supporters are now gearing up for the main event a family bike ride along the Warburton Trail that is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. There are four distances to choose from with a barbecue lunch at the halfway mark in Warburton. “Everybody is welcome to come along and enjoy a pleasant day in the beautiful Yarra Valley whilst raising funds for a cause that is very close to our hearts, and to the hearts of too many Australians,” Kirsty said. Every cent raised from the events will go to Alzheimer’s Australia. To register or donate visit givealzheimersaustraliavic.org.au/aridetoremember. Generous and humble OBITUARY William ‘Bill’ Stanley Barker Born: 21 August 1929 Died: 15 October 2013 FORMER Yarra Ranges businessman, Lillydale Shire president and community worker Bill Barker passed away on 15 October 2013, age 84. Bill spent nearly all of his years in the Yarra Valley, growing up on a farm in Burleigh (now known as Silvan), attending Silvan South State School until grade seven, and Upwey High School to earn his Intermediate Certificate. With the death of his mother in 1946, and with his father listed as “missing in action, presumed dead” in World War II in Malaya, now Malaysia, Bill and his younger brother and sister moved to the Stanhope Legacy Hostel, Kew. After a few different jobs, including grape picking in Mildura and working for Australian National Airways (ANA) that later became Ansett Airlines, Bill returned to the Yarra Valley in 1953. He started working for Silvan orchardists R.L. Chapmans & Sons as an orchard hand and stayed with them for 25 years. On a trip to the Snowy Mountains in 1965, Bill’s heart was won over by a shy, young woman from Goroke, in the Wimmera district. For nearly two years a long distance (around 400kms) romance blossomed until Bill married his sweetheart Doris Wade and returned with her to Silvan. Bill always said that his life

didn’t start until he met and married Doris and together they raised their family - Julie, Kerry and Glen. In 1979, at the tender age of 50 years, Bill left R.L. Chapmans and started working as a sales representative for Ramsey & Treganowan, a supplier of agricultural chemicals to farmers, viticulturists, and orchardists. While Bill had always had a strong work ethic, the two next decades seemed to take that work ethic to a new level, with Bill offering advice and remedies or cures to orchardists and farmers in the greater Yarra Valley. Bill worked, or was at least available on the home phone, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Many a family dinner would be interrupted by the phone ringing and Bill being required to diagnose a fruit or berry disease or pest, and prescribing “medicines” to grateful farmers who trusted his advice and appreciated his patience. From March 1985, Bill was providing this advice and support to customers of Yarra Valley Chemicals (later Yarra Valley Crop Care) - a business he established with Doris and managed until his retirement in 1998. Bill’s community and public service spirit also saw him involved, in various capacities and offices, in sporting, community and farming associations from 1970 through to the late 1980s. His contributions included treasurer, secretary and coach of Wandin East Badminton Club juniors and publicity officer for the district association.

He was secretary to the Silvan & District Growers Association, the Wandin East Hall Co-operative Society and the Upper Yarra Valley and Dandeonogs Rural Advisory Committee, and a member of the Rubus Growers Association, the Yarra Valley Market Users, and Wandin Silvan Field Day committees. From 1983 to 1992 Bill represented the East Riding of the Shire of Lillydale, including a term as president from 1988 to 1989. During that time he represented the council on a number of bodies, including the Lilydale Sewerage Authority, the Lilydale Citizens’ Advisory and Welfare Service, the Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Authority and the Monbulk High School Council. A legacy of his term as shire president was the 22 years he subsequently served as a Justice of the Peace. Bill was still witnessing documents for members of the public up until his hospitalisation in September. In his retirement years, Bill put his energy and time into his garden, and enjoyed sharing it with friends and strangers through an open garden day, and with cuttings, bulbs, and bunches of freshly cut flowers. Bill is remembered fondly as a kind, generous, humble and thoughtful man, and as a “true gentleman”. A funeral service for Bill was held on 22 October 2013 at Good Shepherd Ringwood Lutheran Church. - Tribute by daughter Kerry Barker

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 28 October 1933 Around About Healesville A TRIAL screening of the native bear film we produced at the Sir Colin MacKenzie sanctuary recently was held at the Melbourne office of a well-known newsreel company on Wednesday. The film was given a AAA classification and will be shown all over Australia, New Zealand and overseas. Cr S.B. Mowle, our energetic shire president made a special trip to Melbourne on Thursday in connection with Healesville’s participation in the centenary celebrations. Ride ’em cowboy! The big Healesville rodeo. Buckjumping, steer riding, bull dogging - all to be staged shortly by Alec and Rob Christie and a big posse of other expert horsemen for a thrilling movie. At present he is devoting much of his time reviving interest in the scout movement at Healesville. Healesville Football Club THE Healesville Football Club’s annual ball, again a very successful function, was held in the Palais on Friday night. Decorations were carried out in the club’s colours - red and white - giving a festive appearance. lampshades and the windows with mock curtains. On the walls were branches of eucalyptus and wild cherry, with huge bunches of lillies. It was estimated that between 250 and 300 were present, either as dancers or onlookers. Murray Ellis helped out with the effort to fight fires in New South Wales last Picture: JESSE GRAHAM month. 109746

Murray helps By JESSE GRAHAM AS FIRES raged across New South Wales last month, Badger Creek’s Murray Ellis was one of many firefighters around the Yarra Valley who rushed interstate to lend a helping hand. Acting Works Manager at Healesville Sanctuary Murray Ellis was part of a strike team sent from Victoria to help fight bushfires in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales last month. Mr Ellis, who is a third lieutenant with the Badger Creek CFA, drove up to Mount Victoria on Monday 21 October with firefighters from Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek and other areas as part of a composite strike team crew. He returned from the trip

the following Saturday, 26 October and said the interstate fire crews had a sense of camaraderie when it came to battling the blazes that spanned thousands of hectares. “There were crews from South Australia and crews from Queensland - it was big, and it’s the way it should be, with the states coming together,” Mr Ellis said. “You have the state rivalry, until you have to get in there and help out and everyone gets on.” Mr Ellis worked with the strike team for three days on the fire ground, blacking out areas to stop the spread of more fire and providing relief for the New South Wales firefighters who were run off of their feet.

“We gave the other crews, that had been working for a long time, a few days of rest,” he said. “Once you’ve been fighting for a fair amount of time, you can get run down.” He said that the weather was on the side of the firefighters and didn’t get as bad as expected, which made the fires easier to contain. “As far as I’m concerned, it went really well,” he said. Mr Ellis encouraged anyone interested to put their hand up to volunteer with the CFA and said that, in the lead up to the fire season, Badger Creek CFA is recruiting new members. For more information about becoming part of the Badger Creek CFA, call Murray Ellis on 0457 631 399.

Hoods at the Memo

By JESSE GRAHAM

OPERA singers will be gracing the stage of Healesville’s Memorial Hall this weekend, with performers presenting classic and modern tales for the audience to enjoy. Yarra Opera will be performing re-worked editions of the Henry Purcell opera Dido and Aeneas, along with the contemporary opera Robin Hood’s Lament on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November. Tramway’s rich history recalled By KATH GANNAWAY THERE were hundreds of timber tramways throughout Victoria in the early part of the 20th century, but the Powelltown tramway was unique. Built in the latter part of 1913, it carried not only timber and goods for the people along the line but was the only tramway officially licensed to carry passengers. Now 100 years later, on Sunday 17 November, the Powelltown Tramway Centenary celebration will showcase the history of the line that ran from Yarra Junction railway station out to Powelltown. Thousands of people lived at bush mills and settlements along the tramway route in its heyday. Val Adams, whose father Harry Cox was a fireman and grandfather Jack Cox was a driver on the tramline, said the line’s rich history is worth celebrating. They would have passed mill sidings with names such as Grooms, Feiglins, Reids, United and Worlleys, and stations including Gilderoy, Three

Bridges, Gladysdale and Black Sands as they hauled timber on The Shay. The Upper Yarra Museum has driven the event, engaging local residents, businesses and community groups to bring together a day with plenty to see and do, not only for history buffs, but for everyone. Visitors can start at the Upper Yarra Museum in Yarra Junction with breakfast, blacksmiths and museum tours... then on the road to Powelltown. A procession of horses and steam engines will lead the way out along the Little Yarra Road where signs will mark the tramway sidings and ‘stations’. Visitors can park at The Apple Farm at Three Bridges for an amble along the tramline and tour the apple orchard while they get a feel for the environment that many of the mill workers and their families would have called home. Tourists can then wander along to the Powelltown Hall where the Black Hill Ramblers will be playing and steam, horses and timber tool demonstrations will be taking place

throughout the day, along with food, heritage and community group displays. Visit the heritage-listed Union Church for a remarkable display of wedding and christening gowns and photos and then line up for a tour of the historically-linked, and still operating, Powelltown sawmill. Activities include a jumping castle, tug of war, hot air balloon, music, kids’ games, tree climbing and wood chop. Beyond Powelltown, they can enjoy the Walk Into History trails in the Yarra State Forest and explore the original tramway tracks among remnants of the vibrant timber industry. As part of the celebrations, the Powelltown Tramway Centenary 1913-2013 book, written by Mike McCarthy and Frank Stamford, will be launched and available at the Upper Yarra Museum and the Powelltown Hall. For more information about the Powelltown Tramway Centenary celebrations visit upperyarramuseum.org.au, phone the museum on 5967 2167 or Rhonda on 0430 350 111.

Val Adams shares an historic photo of her father and grandfather on The Shay in 1937, with Upper Yarra Museum volunteer Rhonda O’Meara. The station signs (in black) and siding signs (white) will trace the tramway from Yarra Junction to Powelltown. 109817 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY

IF YOU had asked Bill Wheeler what the Yarra Junction Hardware building would look like in 70 years’ time, who knows what he would have said. It’s certainly changed over the decades, going up, and spreading out to accommodate the growing timber and hardware business. Its core business has stayed the same, which is remarkable. With the exception of pubs, and perhaps com-

munity buildings such as halls, churches and schools, that is something not a lot of buildings around Yarra Ranges can boast. The changing face of the main streets and shopping precincts of Yarra Ranges is the subject of a fascinating exhibition that opened on Saturday. The exhibition – Changing Places: The Evolution of Yarra Ranges’ Main Streets – not only explores how they have changed over time, but asks visi-

Relay hearts lives on By KATH GANNAWAY TEN years on from the first Yarra Ranges Relay for Life, hundreds of people came together on the weekend for the anniversary event at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville where it all began. Teams have come and gone over the years with the event being held in Mount Evelyn and Healesville, but the strength and spirit of the event, and its capacity to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Cancer Council Victoria, is as strong as ever. The event started with the Survivors and Carers Walk on Saturday afternoon and included the moving Candlelight Ceremony at dusk. YRRL chairwoman Prue Northey brought the 2014 committee and teams together again on Sunday morning for the closing ceremony. She said the event had been one of mixed emotions where many had shared tears and laughter along with plenty of inspiration. Ms Northey said the 2014 committee had made tremendous efforts for the 10th anniversary event to expand into local communities to encourage them to embrace what Relay for Life and the Cancer Council stand for. “We have challenged our community and our committee to come together to show everyone that when we walk together, we are bigger than cancer,” she said. “Our committee set ambitious goals this year and, with your support, I am pleased to announce our current fund-raising total is $65,200 and counting,” she said to a huge cheer.

Thousands of reasons for remembering them By KATH GANNAWAY and JESSE GRAHAM COMMUNITIES around the Yarra Valley commemorated Remembrance Day on Monday attending local cenotaphs at 11am to remember those who died in war. While numbers attending were small, compared to Anzac Day, the sentiment was the same - to pay tribute to Australian servicemen and women who have given their lives for Australia from World War I through to the present day in Afghanistan. The day was originally called Armistice Day, marking the signing of the armistice at the end of World War I and the end of the war on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918. It was changed after World War II to Remembrance Day to commemorate all war dead. A group gathered at the Healesville RSL to pay tribute to those lost to war, with newly-elected mayor Fiona McAllister speaking about the importance of the day and the scale of the destruction witnessed. “We are gathered here today to commemorate the sacrifice so many have made in times of war and peacekeeping and to remember the importance of peace,” she said. “We commemorate their ultimate sacrifice here today - we’re here to observe the life and death of those who died and to

remember that war is hell-on-Earth, something to be avoided at all costs.” Healesville’s Bob Gannaway and Healesville High School’s Daniel Garth and Hayley Chandler also spoke at the event, before community members and veterans formed lines and planted poppies and rosemary sprigs to honour those lost. At Yarra Junction, Upper Yarra RSL member Dennis Reeves put the number into perspective saying, “I can give you 104,000 reasons why we’re here today” including in his talk the loss of 28,000 men in the Battle of the Somme over the battle time. “That’s five men every two minutes per 24 hours - that’s the approximate population of this valley from Lilydale to Reefton. “Can you imagine the annihilation of this valley in a time frame of between now and Christmas,” he posed an unimaginable question. Listing the numbers of Australian lives lost since WWI he concluded with Afghanistan where he said: “Forty men have become heroes the hard way.” Among those attending ceremonies around the valley, many wore their own medals and those of relatives who may have counted in the sobering numbers. “If you add up all those lives lost, then you have almost 104,000 reasons why we should remember on Remembrance Day,” he said asking for a minute’s silence.

A nice return by spinner Jim Lusk (Yarra Glen) who took excellent figures of 2/21 as opening bowler on debut for Yarra Valley. 109849

Braden Taeuber (Warburton-Millgrove) bowls for the Yarra Valley Under 14’s in the VCCL Region eight Junior Competition against Ferntree Gully DCA on Sunday. The competition is a pre-curser to team selection for the VMCU Representative Carnivals held over the summer holidays. Seville, Yarra Glen, Warburton-Millgrove, Healesville and Mount Evelyn clubs are represented in the competition along with other clubs who will play in the next round. Yarra Valley made 4/137 of 40 with cocaptains Alex Ferguson (Launching Place/Woori Yallock and Alex Brisbane-Flynn (Mount Evelyn) putting on an opening stand of 58 runs. Ferntree Gully took first round honours with a 4/194 win. 109849

Wombats bite back boldly IN STARK contrast to last weekend’s brilliant conditions, the conclusion to Round Five action in the Yarra Valley was marred by persistent rain. A few games across the association managed to get enough play to produce a result, and in the only game to get play in DJ Strachan Shield, Hoddles Creek produced the biggest upset so far this season. Facing the top of the table Coldstream, and defending a mediocre score of 137, most cricket followers gave the Wombats no chance against a strong Crocs batting line-up. Someone forgot to tell the visitors of the script, as improving youngsters Dave Chesney (3/8) and Nick Lawlor (3/32), with the support of the classy Brenton Derix (3/20), ripped through the top order to have the home side hammered at 8/60. A hard hitting rear-guard attack from Jarrod Bayliss (56), gave the Crocs a sniff of hope, but the Wombats deservingly nipped the last two wickets out to take an unlikely nine run win. This result has left the DJ Strachan Shield ladder a tight one after five rounds. The previously undefeated Coldstream, now slip back to the pack a little with all other sides securing split points. With three two-day games before Christmas, the next month could dramatically shape the 2013 and 2014 season.

Round six action sees Coldstream host Mount Evelyn in a crucial match, where the home side will be looking to bounce back from a dismal performance this week while the Rovers need to get their season flowing again after two washouts in three games. Seville is in desperate need of resurrecting its title defence and will host a Yarra Junction side that is keen to capitalise on its recent good form with the winner clearing from the lower rungs of the ladder. A buoyed Hoddles Creek will host Woori Yallock which escaped the hangman’s noose this round, with both sides in need of victory to stay in touch with the top four. In the final game of the round, Warburton-Millgrove will host a red hot Healesville and this promises to be gripping contest. The Bloods are the most improved side in the competition while the Burras have put behind them a disappointing 2012 and 2013 season and are looking to reclaim their position as a power within the association. This week is all about the future stars of the competition. On Sunday, the cream of the Junior competition faced off with Ferntree Gully DCA in the first game of the VCCL Region Eight games.

The scores were unavailable at time of print. The Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 teams will use these games as valuable practice and team selection for the VMCU Representative Carnivals held over the summer school holidays. The Juniors will also be able to make up for lost time, after Saturday’s washout, with a midweek Twenty20 game. This will be the third round of the Twenty20 competition with semi finals and finals to follow in late November. Many of the clubs are gearing up for their Milo in2Cricket programs which kick off over the next few weeks. Mount Evelyn, Healesville, Hoddles Creek and Woori Yallock conduct the entry level program. The Milo in2Cricket program is dedicated to helping kids, aged five to 10, learn how to play cricket. Each session is different and the clubs have introduced a refreshed curriculum to ensure that participants are having the maximum amount of fun while learning the basics of the game. The activities are designed to be inclusive, action-packed and fun in a well organised environment to help kids to develop social skills, physical fitness, sportsmanship and basic cricket knowledge.

Rest up brings results A MISERABLE wet cold Saturday resulted in this week’s round of little athletics being cancelled. This resulted in a small team of well rested athletes that competed at the Box Hill relays last Sunday. The athletes did not disappoint with outstanding individual and team performances returning many final-

ists and medals. Relay events of 4x100, 4x200 and medley kept the athletes busy all day. Throughout the day, Yarra Ranges athletes were in 22 events with 16 teams making it to the final. It was not until the end of the day that the first athlete from the club

won the first and only gold medal of the event. The club also walked away with three second and third places. Entries for region relays being held on 1 December close this week. For more information, visit www. yarrarangesathletics.org.au.
