Letter of the law

By MELISSA MEEHAN A MAN with hundreds of pieces of stolen mail will be charged to the full letter of the law after he was arrested driving a stolen car last week.

Lilydale CIU Detective Senior Constable Matt Gill said police were still sorting through the stolen letters after finding the stash when they pulled over a stolen car on Thursday.

“There was stolen mail through-

out the car - the car was full of it - we found mail in the boot, backseat and front seats,” he said.

“We still don’t know the exact number of letters found - but we believe there is hundreds.”

Sen Const Gill said the majority of the stolen mail from letterboxes found in the car was from all over the Yarra Ranges, but said there was mail from as far away as the Whitehorse and Monash areas.

The 33-year-old man, of no fixed address, is believed to have links to the Mount Evelyn area, but police believe he was originally from interstate.

“We believe that he was trawling through the mail, picking and choosing what he was taking,” he said.

“We believe if he found a credit card or bank card he would take that and then come back a few days later to get the PIN code.”

Const Gill said it looked as though the man targeted one street at a time and would take mail from a number of houses in the one area.

Police are also investigating whether the man is linked to the theft of several stolen wallets from unlocked cars in the Yarra Ranges and believe he had made a number of purchases using the stolen cards at Chirnside Park Shopping Centre.

pected to face separate charges for each piece of stolen mail as well as a number of thefts and deceptions and has been remanded in custody.

He said that the owners of the stolen mail would be contacted by police, and asked people in the area expecting letters including new credit cards and PIN codes to be aware of the thefts.

Firefighters step up for charity MOST people would take the elevator. But these guys are taking the stairs - in full fire fighting gear.

Climbing to the top of the Eureka Tower in Melbourne is no easy feat, but eight fit and fearless firefighters are making the 1642 stair climb to raise money for disadvantaged youths.

This Sunday Upwey firefighters James Buttler, Noel Nealon, Shane O’Brien and Sean Radford will be participating for the third year in a row and to add to their challenge they will be completing the climb in full structural turnout gear and breathing apparatus - another 20odd kilograms.

Four other first timers will join them on the 88 floor climb to raise money for charities Whitelion and Interplast - and will wear their firefighting turnout gear.

Relay across the years

By KATH GANNAWAY TEN years on from the first Yarra Ranges Relay for Life, hundreds of people came together on the weekend for the anniversary event at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville where it all began.

Teams have come and gone over the years with the event being held in Mount Evelyn and Healesville, but the strength and spirit of the event and its capacity to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Cancer Council Victoria is as strong as ever.

The event started with the Survivors and Carers Walk on Saturday afternoon and included the moving Candlelight Ceremony at dusk.

The event’s chairwoman Prue Northey brought the 2014 committee and teams together again on Sunday morning for the closing ceremony.

She said the event had been one of mixed emotions where many had shared tears and laughter along with plenty of inspiration.

Ms Northey said the 2014 committee had made tremen-

dous efforts for the 10th anniversary event to expand into local communities to encourage them to embrace what Relay for Life and the Cancer Council stand for.

“We have challenged our community and our committee to come together to show everyone that when we walk together we are bigger than cancer,” she said.

“Our committee set ambitious goals this year and with your support I am pleased to announce our current fundraising total is $65,200 and counting,” she said to a huge cheer.

Briefly Man on knife charges POLICE seized a large knife from a car parked near the Cardinia Reservoir picnic area near Cardinia Creek Road in Emerald on Thursday.

A 20-year-old Dandenong man was interviewed by police and will be charged on summons.

School windows damaged POLICE are calling on witnesses to graffiti attacks on the Cockatoo Primary School last week.

Emerald Sergeant Fiona Tolmie said that the main office and portable classrooms were tagged with graffiti linked to the ‘Cockatoo Law Breakers’ including CLB, RBSUP and RBS. She said the tags were scratched into windows throughout the school.

“We want anyone with information to contact Emerald police,” Sgt Tolmie said.

Tool shed raids

SCHOOL iPads and small laptops are being targeted by brazen thieves throughout the Yarra Ranges.

A number of schools have been targeted over the past few months, including Ferny Creek Primary School, Upwey South Primary School and Billanook College in the past week.

that police were doing their best to find the thieves and stop the thefts, but needed help from the public.

“We are using numerous resources on this, but we really need the eyes and ears from members of the public,” Sen Sgt Price said.

“We need help in solving them.”

Ambulance meet consultation RESIDENTS of Tecoma are invited to attend a community consultation session about the new ambulance station in their town.

The meeting will be held at 1 Rocksleigh Avenue, Tecoma, from 5pm and will discuss the plans to bring the 24hour ambulance service to town.

He said that police believed the iPads and computers were being resold on social media sites like Gumtree and maybe even buy, swap and sell sites on Facebook.

“We believe there is definitely a pattern with these school burglaries,” he said.

Sex assault charges KNOX Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) detectives have arrested a man following an historical abduction and sexual assault.

A 16-year-old boy was allegedly abducted from the Heatherdale Railway Station between February

and September in 1984.

A 60-year-old man was arrested yesterday in Ferntree Gully.

The Ferntree Gully man is expected to be charged on summons with kidnapping, false imprisonment, attempted rape and other related offences.

So it was no surprise that when a number of talented young artists came together for a planned paint out at the Upwey Skate Park, sponsored by the Yarra Ranges Shire, the end result was magnificent.

It was organised by the tiffaney bishop COLLECTIVE (tbC), an artist run initiative that offers young people, up to

20-something the opportunity to contest the historical divide between the community and contemporary arts.

“This contested line between community and contemporary art inspires and drives the groups practice and outcomes,” Ms Bishop said.

“These young people, work in-between spaces and experimental cross-disciplinary practices to propose a ‘new status’ for young artists and a ‘new aesthetic’ for community based art.”

TOOLS worth $1800 were stolen from a property in Aura Vale Road, Menzies Creek.

Emerald Sergeant Fiona Tolmie said police believed that unknown offenders cut through a bolted padlock on a shed door and took a number of power tools including an Echo chainsaw, a Makita drill, a Riobi drill, a Makita hammer drill, a Makita plainer and a welder which are valued at more than $1800.

Two chainsaws worth more than $2000 were also stolen from a large cattle farm in Gembrook.

Sgt Tolmie said that the chainsaws were stolen from an unlocked shed at the Beenak East Road property.

THIS week, we pay tribute to the brave Australians who did not return home from war.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause for one minute to remember those brave Australian sailors, soldiers and airmen who have made the supreme sacrifice.

It was at this point in 1918 when the guns fell silent and World War I came to an end. The Great War claimed more than 37 million lives, including 61,513 Australians.

In total, 102,784 Australians have laid down their lives in conflict over the years.

This is roughly equal to the total population of the Yarra Ranges.

In Parliament last week, I came across an old piece of legislation named the Limbless Soldiers Trust Act 1942.

I found it sobering to think that there were so many veterans who had lost an arm or a leg that Victoria need-

Women smash the glass ceiling

By JESSE GRAHAM FOR the first time in the shire’s history, two women have been elected to the top roles at Yarra Ranges Council at the same time.

On Wednesday 6 November, Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister and Billanook Ward councillor Maria McCarthy were elected to the roles of mayor and deputy mayor.

Together, the pair marks the first time in the Yarra Ranges Shire’s 19-year history that two women have been elected to the top roles at the same time.

Cr McAllister was nominated by Chirnside Ward councillor Andy Witlox for the role and was pitted against Lyster Ward Cr Samantha Dunn, who was nominated by Walling Ward Cr Len Cox. The vote went down to the wire, with the council split between the pair, but Cr McAllister won the top job in a five-tofour majority, replacing former mayor, O’Shannassy Ward councillor Jim Child.

The position of deputy mayor was not so hotly contested - Billanook Ward councillor Maria McCarthy was nominated by Chandler Ward’s Jason Callanan and elected unopposed.

Cr McCarthy said she was very proud and honoured to be part of the first allwoman leadership duo at the council and that she was looking forward to working with the new mayor over the next year.

Cr McAllister said the election of herself and Cr McCarthy was a positive step for women achieving leadership positions.

Cr McCarthy said the opportunities for women to gain leadership roles are available for those confident enough to grasp them and Cr McAllister said women don’t need to choose between family and public roles.

“Whether it’s a committee or council, if you’ve got a good support network then the opportunities are there,” she said.

Cr Cox spoke on the importance of the election and the mayoral role before the matter was put to a vote by the councillors.

“The mayor leads the council and is a

servant of the council in many ways - the council is very, very much, to a great degree, judged by the way the mayor talks and behaves,” he said.

“They’re not just a councillor for one ward - they’re a councillor for nine wards and it is, to me, a very important and really great job.”

He said that the incoming mayor would have to have a “good brain”, the ability to talk to people, understand the workings of council and have a “fair degree” of experience in local government.

Cr Cox said Cr Dunn ticked “all those boxes”.

Cr McAllister said that one of the biggest issues over her next year as mayor would be the Bushfire Management Overlay, along with fiscal responsibility.

“We had a great turnout then,” he said.

“And we’ve again got the sponsorship from the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group - so we expect it to be well attended again.”

Mr Waldron said that this year was the perfect time to hold the exposition again following the New South Wales bushfires.

“People need to have their plans ready,” Mr Waldron said.

“We call it a one stop shop.

“There will be people from the shire, CFA, SES, Victoria Police, Wildlife Victoria and we’ll even have Captain Koala here.”

Those who attend will have the opportunity to receive information, help and advice as well as the opportunity to check out the fire trucks and other firefighting appliances in the area.

Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group chairman Peter Marke said he was thrilled that the banks could sponsor the day again.

The Community Bank Safety Expo will be held on Sunday 24 November at the Emerald Mechanics Hall from 10am until 3pm.

AT last the real reason.

Last week’s letter from our regular complainer Alan Coutinho-Hogan (Something to Look Forward To, Mail Opinion, 5 November) revealed several things which make his constant war with “the Guvmin” and all who sail in her much clearer.

Alan (I’m not being friendly or familiar, its just the rest is such a mouthful) says he is becoming a keyboard worrier.

How true, he worries me every time he gets near a keyboard.

Ah, perhaps he meant keyboard warrior, in which case he is very lightly armed in the wordpower and English usage department.

In classic terms, he is taking a knife to a gunfight.

But the real revelation comes late in his letter where he admits in his own words his ulterior motive for running (unsuccessfully) for council.

I quote Alan exactly: “Don’t take politicians seriously, they are only there to feed their own needs.”

So, by his own admission, the cat is out of the bag, he ran “to feed his own needs”.

But I guess we all do things through rational self-interest.

DEAR Mary Fitz-Gerald, you may or may not be aware that out here in the real world, a few rules have recently changed mainly due to our local councillor Dunn and her supporters protesting against a McDonald’s business opening up in Tecoma.

Although we disagreed with their disruptive activities, it now appears that with the support of all our local elected representatives, the police, the mayor and council’s CEO that peaceful protest at all levels is a legitimate method to use in changing the practices of any business that you are in conflict with.

We have now reinstalled our signs on our own property in peaceful protest against your organisation’s activities in relation to our once peaceful and quiet residential street.

You can call your friends at the council in another attempt to get their officers to come around to our home and once again use their now redundant by-laws to bully and intimidate us into removing our peaceful protest signs like you did a few months ago, but I believe if they did that the council would look like complete hypocrites as they only have by-laws to use against anyone other than their supporters.

You can do what you should have done a couple of years ago and act like good neighbours, indeed good Samaritans, and come around and talk to us about the problems your multi-national company is creating in our residential street.

Given that we moved here to raise our son in what we believed was to be our forever home, our signs will stay up and increase until you desist any non-residential development in our residential street, your organisation pays to seal our street and fix the drainage problem that you have created.

Before you proceed with any further proposed degradation of our residential amenity you can buy our signs off us.

Or your organisation can purchase our forever home from us giving us the financial opportunity to get as far away from your bullying organisation that we can.

SPRING CARNIVAL made its way to the Yarra Ranges last week as punters and fashionistas made their way to race days held at Yarra Glen and Healesville.

Yarra Valley Racing chief executive Brett Shambrook said Melbourne Cup Day resulted in a large crowd come through the gates and that the crowd was

well behaved.

“It was a great day weather wise and we had a good turnout,” Mr Shambrook said.

“Everyone was really wellbehaved too, so that was really good to see.”

Oaks Day, also held at Yarra Glen Race Course, was a little less hectic with punters enjoying the cloudy but humid day on the grass.

Healesville Amateur Racing Club had a great start to their

season on the Saturday, with sunshine, rows of marquees trackside and picnics galore under the famous pin-oaks.

HARC president David Purcell said the committee was delighted with the day with a sensational crowd determined to have a fantastic day of country racing.

“We’re looking forward to a successful summer season,” he said.

Wombats bite back IN STARK contrast to the previous weekend’s brilliant conditions, the conclusion to Round Five action in the Yarra Valley was marred by persistent rain.

A few games across the association managed to get enough play to produce a result, and in the only game to get play in DJ Strachan Shield, Hoddles Creek produced the biggest upset so far this season.

Facing the top of the table Coldstream, and defending a mediocre score of 137, most cricket followers gave the Wombats no chance against a strong Crocs batting line-up.

Someone forgot to tell the visitors of the script, as improving youngsters Dave Chesney (3/8) and Nick Lawlor (3/32), with the support of the classy Brenton Derix (3/20), ripped through the top order to have the home side hammered at 8/60.

A hard hitting rear-guard attack from Jarrod Bayliss (56) gave the Crocs a sniff of hope but the Wombats deservingly nipped the last two wickets out to take an unlikely nine run win.

This result has left the DJ Strachan Shield ladder a tight one after five rounds.

The previously undefeated, Coldstream now slips back to the pack a little with all other sides securing split points.

With three two-day games before Christmas, the next month could dramatically shape the 2013 and 2014 season.

Round six action sees Coldstream host Mount Evelyn in a crucial match, where the home side will be looking to bounce back from a dismal performance this week while the Rovers need to get their season flowing again after two washouts in three games.

Seville is in desperate need of resurrecting its title defence and will host a Yarra Junction side that is keen to capitalise on its recent good form, with the winner clearing from the lower rungs of the ladder.

A buoyed Hoddles Creek will host Woori Yallock which escaped the hangman’s noose this round, with both sides in need of victory to stay in touch with the top four.

In the final game of the round, Warburton-Millgrove will host a red hot Healesville and this promises to be gripping contest.

The Bloods are the most improved side in the competition while the Burras have put behind them a disappointing 2012 and 2013 season, and are looking to reclaim their position as a power within the association.

This week is all about the future stars of the competition.

On Sunday, the cream of the Junior competition faced off with Ferntree Gully DCA in the first game of the VCCL Region Eight games.

The scores were unavailable at time of print.

The Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 teams will use these games as valuable practice and team selection for the VMCU Representative Carnivals held over the summer school holidays.

The Juniors will also be able to make up for lost time after Saturday’s washout, with a midweek Twenty20 game.

This will be the third round of the Twenty20 competition with semi finals

Many of the clubs are gearing up for their Milo in2Cricket programs which kick off over the next few weeks.

The Milo in2 Cricket program is dedicated to helping kids, aged five to 10, learn how to play cricket.

Each session is different and the clubs have introduced a refreshed curriculum to ensure that participants are having the maximum amount of fun while learning the basics of the game.

The activities are designed to be inclusive, action-packed and fun in a well organised environment to help kids to develop social skills, physical fitness, sportsmanship and basic cricket knowledge.

WITH the promise of more rain than Emerald Golf Club has seen in 215 years, members still rolled up ready for the fray.

Emerald members fired up for a round of two man ambrose and after the teams were picked, proceeding began.

While looking for an errant ball in the undergrowth, the team of Dave Aitken (27) and Mark Starick (10) caused a few problems.

Aitken bought the strokes of handicap into the combination and Starick supplied the golfing prowess.

Their net 64.75 saw them easy winners.

Not to be completely outclassed were Ken Hill and Peter Clowes (8) who came in next with 65 followed by Ken Sumsion and Mike Litchfield (9.75) on 66.25.

Allan Ecclestone was nearest the pin on the fourth, Litchfield the seventh, Clowes the 12th, Brock Reynolds the 13th and Peter Jones played a glorious shot on the 18th to snap the pro pin spondulicks into his purse.

The ladies pair of Irene Scott and Brianna McCoy took all before them to card an imposing and successful score to slate the opposition.

The last semi-final in the match play championship took place between captain, Andrew Cutting (11) and young tyro Broc Reynolds (18).

The match ebbed and flowed across 18 holes and the result then was square.

After a deep breath they set off to the first tee to play till a winner was crowned or one drowned in a bunker.

That hole resulted in Cutting gaining the upper hand when he won that hole by a stroke.

Cutting will now face off against that wily old campaigner Ken Sumsion (28) in the final.

On Wednesday, when the oldies rolled in for the weekly dose of Overly Fondled Golf (OFG), using OFG handicaps, a round of stableford was the offering.

Ken Sumsion (27) defied the odds and flogged the living daylights out of the rest with a massive 46 points.

There was a large swish of golfers behind who all scored 39 to be pleased with their efforts but copped nil reward.

This list included Dennis Fuller (10), Moss Fuller (20), Graeme Fergus (23) Bob Kennedy (17) and Sepp Krummenacher (28).

Rest up brings results A MISERABLE wet cold Saturday resulted in this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s round of little athletics being cancelled.

This resulted in a small team of well rested athletes that competed at the Box Hill relays last Sunday.

The athletes did not disappoint with outstanding individual and

team performances returning many finalists and medals.

Relay events of 4x100, 4x200 and medley kept the athletes busy all day.

Throughout the day, Yarra Ranges athletes were in 22 events with 16 teams making it to the final.

It was not until the end of the day

that the first athlete from the club won the first and only gold medal of the event.

The club also walked away with three second and third places.
