Surgery numbers up

By CHARLENE MACAULAY WESTERN Hospital’s elective surgery list has almost doubled in the past year, with more than 2000 patients waiting for a variety of operations.

The Victorian Health Services Performance Report for the June 2013 quarter shows the elective surgery waiting list is currently at 2033 people, up from 1716 in the March quarter and 1157 in the June 2012 quarter.

The report also reveals that the hospital’s emergency department passed with flying colours in treating all of its category one, two and three patients within State Government benchmarks.

However, 40 per cent of emergency department patients who are not admitted faced a wait of over four hours, while 20.1 per cent of patients that arrived by ambulance had to wait more than 40 minutes to be transferred over to hospital staff.

Western Health CEO Alex Cockram said Western Hospital would ramp up its elective surgery lists in 2014 to quell the large numbers of patients waiting for surgery.

“The number of patients on the Western Health elective surgery waiting list has increased due to several factors, including the growth within the catchment

area and an increase in the number of category one patients who require surgery within 30 days and the complex surgical procedures they require,” Assoc Prof Cockram said.

“Of note, the hospital initiated postponement rate for Western Health remained below the state-wide benchmark of eight per cent at 6.3 per cent for the June 2013 Quarter.

“To assist Western Health in managing the growing demand for elective surgery, additional elective surgery lists will be undertaken during 2014.”

Assoc Prof Cockram said despite this, Western Health had continued to make

improvements in Emergency Care Access.

“The proportion of patients waiting less than four hours in our emergency departments has improved over the past 12 months, with Sunshine Hospital’s performance measure now eight per cent ahead and Western Hospital’s figure seven per cent ahead of the June 2012 figures,” she said.

“Meeting the clinically recommended triage times for category one to five emergency patients has also improved, with Western Hospital recording an eight per cent increase on this time last year, while Sunshine Hospital improved by five per cent.”

A TRANSPORT academic and rail consultant said a multi-pronged approach was needed to solve the inner West’s truck traffic woes.

At a transport forum last week, Dr Bill Russell said a range of road and rail measures was needed to help alleviate truck traffic using the West’s residential streets to get to and from the Port of Melbourne.

“This part of Melbourne faces a freight-driven transport problem that is very large ... and there’s no committed project on the horizon to deal with this problem in the next decade,” he said.

Dr Russell said the best way to reduce freight traffic across the inner West was to: * Make the Melbourne Metro rail project a priority. * Re-establish freight on rail. * Re-introduce traffic demand management strategies such as car pooling and priority lanes. * Introduce road pricing schemes for single occupant cars.

The Melbourne Metro Rail Project, which featured prominently in the Victorian Transport Plan, includes a nine kilometre rail tunnel through inner Melbourne that will link the Sunbury and Pakenham/Cranbourne rail lines and features five new underground stations at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.

“Melbourne Metro is the project which, for $9 billion, can move 24 lanes of traffic off the road,” Dr Russell said.

“The level of car dependence really needs to be tackled by these measures.”

Dr Russell was one of six guest speakers at the Transport for Melbourne forum, held last Thursday at the Footscray Town Hall.

Fellow speakers Carolyn Whitzman, Graham Currie, Nicholas Low, John Stone and Sophie Sturup discussed Melbourne’s transport crisis, and how it was affecting the West.

Forum convenor Roger Taylor is keen for residents across Melbourne to join forces and campaign for better transport infrastructure ahead of the 2014 State election.

He said councils across Melbourne should publicly renounce the East West Link and call for the money to be allocated to more cost-effective transport solutions.

Werribee Cup postponed

By XAVIER SMERDON WERRIBEE Racing Club’s flagship event has been postponed as Racing Victoria announced that the track would not be ready to host the Werribee Cup on Wednesday 13 November.

The meeting will instead be transferred to Ballarat to give more time for a new multi-million dollar renovation of the inside section of the track to consolidate.

As a result, the TAB Werribee Cup, which was scheduled to be run next Wednesday, will now be conducted at Werribee on Sunday, 15 December.

The 2000-metre Benchmark 78 race that was to have been run as the Cup on Wednesday will retain its $80,000 stake, but will carry a different name for the new Ballarat meeting. The remainder of the race program remains unchanged.

The inside seven metres of the Werribee track underwent a major renovation following the abandonment of the Club’s meeting on 17 July 2013.

It has remained out of commission during the Spring Racing Carnival so that it could best consolidate for Werribee’s busy summer racing period.

RV’s Chief Executive, Bernard Saundry, said the decision to reschedule the Cup, made in consultation with the Victorian Jockeys Association (VJA), had been made to allow the renovated section of track further time to consolidate. “It is important for the industry and the local community that racing return to Werribee with the track in peak condition and we are not satisfied that it would be at its optimum for next Wednesday’s meeting,� Saundry said.

Kendell told Star the track was “excruciatingly close� to being ready for the Werribee Cup. “The inside seven metres, which has undergone a major renovation since July, has made pleasing progress over the past fortnight with the warmer weather,� Mr Kendell said. “But it has not quite consolidated to the standard we would like to commence racing on it next Wednesday. “I think it’s fair to say that Werribee is judged twice as hard as most other tracks ... because of its history,� he said. “We just weren’t prepared to come back early and risk any kind of incident happening.�

Mr Kendell also gave an “iron-clad� guarantee that the track would not be used as much next year, giving it a better chance to be ready for scheduled race meetings.

City’s toff neighbours

By CHARLENE MACAULAY GENTRIFICATION across the City of Maribyrnong has priced low-income earners out of the property and rental market and forced them to live further out West.

That’s the findings from Victoria University researchers Sally Weller and Andrew van Hulten, who studied the effects of gentrification and displacement on Melbourne’s low-income residents, particularly in the suburbs of Footscray, Yarraville and Seddon.

Their report found that a culmination of events in the early 2000s created strong housing demand across the West, including first home owner grants boosting house prices, banks allowing home owners to borrow to the hilt and an influx of international students.

The researchers believe three developments the Docklands, rail and road infrastructure project that improved connectivity to the rest of the city, and the scarcity of un-renovated heritage properties in other parts of Melbourne primed the inner West for gentrification.

Between 2001 and 2006, the City of Maribyrnong experienced an increase in the number of residents with university degrees, while the number of Healthcare card holders dropped.

Meanwhile, many rental properties, especially in Yarraville and Seddon, were renovated and converted into owner-occupied homes, while apartments and walk-up flats were also being renovated and marketed towards university students, who were considered to have more money than tenants on a low income.

The report found most displaced residents from the City of Maribyrnong moved to Brimbank.

Both sisters agreed that confidence - and a little bit of shape wear - was a must-have for being stylish in any situation. “Confidence is key, but also, I feel like shape wear on the red carpet is a big thing, because you feel smoother, more put together - I am not shy of shape wear - and you have to dress for your own body, even if it’s a trend make sure that it’s something that flatters your body,�

Prized climb

By CHARLENE MACAULAY CHRIS Price is getting in as much stair work as possible before he tackles the Eureka Climb this Sunday.

The Yarraville resident will be seeded number five in the elite category, where he will race up 88 levels and 1642 stairs among a close field.

Mr Price, who is the co-founder of Stair Climbing Australia, has a long pedigree in stair climbing and has come second in three races this year alone - the Brisbane Climb, the Perth Climb and the Adelaide Climb.

He also represents Australia on the World Tower Running Council. But he holds no illusions of winning the Eureka Climb, instead aiming to beat his personal best of 10.07 minutes.

Mr Price is keen to break the 10-minute barrier and do the climb in 9.30 minutes.

“It’s not enough to win, but if I get top three or top four, I’ll be happy,” the self-employed movement coach said.

“It’s certainly very much a mental challenge, as well as a physical challenge.

“It’s you against the clock. It never gets any easier, but you get better at it.”

Mr Price, who has done the Eureka Climb three times already, said the last 10 floors were the hardest to get through.

“You pretty much go hell for leather and hold onto whatever energy you have left,” he said.

“Most people make the mistake of going too hard, too early.”

One year, Mr Price was so fatigued doing the Eureka Climb that he bypassed the finish on level 88 and ran straight up to level 90. The Eureka Tower Climb raises money for charity partners Whitelion and Interplast.

A VICTORIA University researcher is playing a role in efforts to keep an iconic Australian animal from extinction.

Doctor Patrick Guay works across the university’s Footscray, St Albans and Werribee campuses. He has embarked on a long-term project with partners Zoos Victoria, the Zoo and Aquarium Association and Save the Tasmanian Devil Program.

The study will help verify whether the brains of Tasmanian devils get smaller, if they are bred in captivity across generations. Recently Tasmanian devils have been battling the deadly Devil Facial Tumour Disease which has devastated their population. Efforts to repopulate the species have concentrated on breeding the animals in captivity.

This is where Dr Guay’s research comes in because if the brains of animals shrink while they are in captivity, this can diminish their natural survival instincts upon being released back into the wild.

“For me it is a way to make a difference for the conservation of Australian animals,” Dr Guay said.

“The big problem with captive breeding is that it is often thought of as the initial step of domestication which is known to cause irreversible brain size decrease.”

As part of his research, Dr Guay has studied the skulls of Tasmanian devils at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston.

Dr Guay said his previous studies into ducks, swans and geese has shown their brain size can shrink by around 11 per cent while in captivity.

However, so far his work with marsupials has revealed their brains will not shrink if they are kept in an ’enriched’ captive environment.

“What this suggests is that - if the animal is provided with an enriched environment similar to their natural environment where they have to find their own food - this decreases the chances of having their brains shrink,” Dr Guay said.

He said most scientists conducting research want to obtain significant results so they could publish their work.

“But in this particular case, getting no particular difference with wild and domesticated animals is what we are hoping for - although I am not trying to pre-empt the results at all,” Dr Guay said.

“If there is no change, in this case that is a good news story.”

Making moves in media

By CHARLENE MACAULAY THESE budding filmmakers are in the running to score an awards hat trick.

Yarraville West Primary School students are finalists in the annual Screen It Awards, which is Australia’s largest competition for school-aged filmmakers, animators and game makers.

The school is hoping to make its three times the charm after taking out the Primary Animation category in 2011 and 2012.

This year, students in the school’s claymation program produced Max’s Farm, a twominute film about a greedy farmer Max who wants to be the top farmer in the Farmer’s

Weekly newspaper.

After eliminating cicadas, birds, lizards and other animals and insects, Max realises he actually needs them to make his farm a success.

Grade 6 student Max Baltas wrote the script and worked with other Grade 5 and 6 students to bring the story to fruition.

Students spent more than six months fine-tuning the script, making the models and film sets, filming and editing.

“I found the base story pretty easy, but all the details were harder,” Max said.

Fellow student Isabella Godfrey added: “You have to be committed to it.”

Yarraville West Primary

School was one of 373 schools and individuals nation-wide to submit their work across the live-action films, computer games and animations categories.

All movies were made around this year’s theme, Connect, intended as a trigger for students and teachers to investigate topical issues while learning filmmaking techniques along the way.

Heather Britton, who runs the school’s claymation program, said she had her fingers crossed for this year’s awards.

“It would be nice, but we’re not expecting anything,” she said.

The winners will be announced on 25 November.

Gift idea is in the bag

Zoyee Kartalis is the smarts behind Eco Gift Bags, an online store that sells sustainable fabric gift bags in a range of sizes that are designed to be re-used and re-gifted.

Ms Kartalis, who come up with the concept a few years ago, turned the idea into a reality last month while she is on maternity leave with her two daughters Sophia and Aliki, both under two.

“My husband and I are godparents to twins, and we bought them some big, bulky presents and had run out of gift paper at the 11th hour, so I had to do a mad dash to the shops to get some more, and ended up spending $20 on wrapping paper only to know that it was going to end up in the rubbish,” she said.

“My husband suggested, wouldn’t it be great if we could wrap presents with fabric? So I did a bit of research online, and discovered some online businesses overseas that have the same concept.”

The Eco Gift Bag range includes a classic collection of prints, as well as a designer collection that features expensive quilting materials for those after a more exclusive pattern.

Ms Kartalis has used her PR and marketing experience to get the business off the ground.

Kev’s Greatest Gadget Just as we have the dazzling displays of Kit Kats, Flakes and Freddo Frogs to tempt us at the supermarket checkout, I always find it hard to resist the itty bitty little gadgets you find on display next to the cash register at most homewares stores.

You know the ones I mean – teeny little silver turkey thermometers, micro-sized cheese graters … fridge magnets shaped like chickens with built-in tape measures.

We’d just popped into the Chef’s Hat in South Melbourne to buy some new frypans when Kevin suddenly became mesmerized by some colourful little silicone cones on display at the checkout. “What do these do?” he asked the lady behind the counter. “They peel

Anyway, the following week Kevin got his first opportunity to put his new gadget to use. Every Monday night at our house, we have Kev’s Cook Up, featuring his famous ‘Monday Mushies’ – three different types of mushrooms sautéed in lashings of garlic and wine. Kevin took three unpeeled garlic cloves, sliced off the woody ends, and eagerly stuffed them into his cone. Then he rolled it on the bench, tipped out the cloves … and voila! They were all perfectly peeled. He did three more … and three more perfectly peeled cloves came out. He was beside himself with excitement and very quick to say to me “I told you so.”

I must say I was fascinated when a workmate (and fellow foodie) told me about the pizza base he’d recently made, requiring just two ingredients – yoghurt and flour! Great if you don’t want to muck around with yeast, or don’t have the time or patience to wait for dough to prove.

This recipe from KidSpot Kitchen will make one pizza: In a bowl, combine one cup of self raising flour with one cup of Greek or natural yoghurt and bring together to form a ball. Turn out onto a floured board, then knead and roll. Knead for five to eight minutes, before rolling out.

By LIAM TWOMEY A BRILLIANT bowling performance from Jake Haberfield lifted Footscray Edgewater to a nailbiting 14 run win against Prahran on Saturday.

After setting the True Blues 309 for victory on day one, Footscray found itself on the back foot as Prahran recovered from an early stumble.

From 1/0, the batting side moved along to 1/102 as Adam Bull and Steve De Bolfo combined for the triple digit partnership.

The re-introduction of Haberfield into the attack brought about the demise of the latter, as De Bolfo was bowled for 32 and Jack Taylor soon followed for a duck.

Bull remained at the crease despite the double strike and combined with James Miller for a 135run partnership.

Seemingly cruising at 4/241, the Footscray bowlers hit back.

Haberfield again secured back-to-back wickets and this time he was joined by Travis Dean who also made a double strike.

Dean removed Bull for 163 and True Blues captain Sam Coates for 11 to leave the chase in tatters.

The remaining wickets also fell in quick succession as Footscray ended the Prahran innings at 294 in the 89th over.

Haberfield finished the match with the dominant figures of 7/82 from 27 overs.

Since joining Footscray in the off-season, the opening bowler has taken 19 wickets, the most of any Premier Cricket bowler.

He was well supported by Dean, who finished with figures of 2/23 while Hamish Winter-Irving took one wicket.

The result sees Footscray move into outright second place on the Premier Cricket ladder with a 5-1 win/loss record for the season.

The Bulldogs are just three points behind top of the table Carlton.

When round seven of the season continues this weekend, Footscray will take on 15th placed Frankston in a two-day fixture.

FOOTBALL Federation Victoria has officially confirmed the Victorian model of the National Premier League will not be introduced for the 2014 season.

The FFV made the announcement via a media release late last week.

It means the Victorian Premier League will continue in its normal format next year.

“It is with great regret and disappointment that the FFV board announces that the National Premier Leagues (NPL) will not be introduced in 2014,” the release said.

The FFV had planned in September to announce the successful applicants that would take part in the new league.

However, the Magistrates Court restrained the governing body from making an announcement and referred the matter to the Supreme Court.

The action was brought on by a group of ‘co-signatory’ clubs who strongly opposed the FFV’s model

Cats couldn’t claw it back HOPPERS Crossing failed to give much of a yelp in its ultimately doomed pursuit of Yarraville Club’s 6/383 in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior Division on Saturday. Starting their chase from scratch on Saturday at Yarraville Club’s Walker Oval, the Cats’ already formidable task was rendered almost impossible after two early wickets fell before they could even hit double digits in the runs column. Emmett Bronca removed Chris Henry for a duck and Sanka Abeyruwan for two before claiming Michael Tubb (14) to leave Hoppers Crossing stranded at 3/31. The visitors’ plight was made even more arduous when skipper Darrel Brown (15) became Bronca’s fourth victim a short time later. When Matthew Murphy joined the party in removing Cameron Nicol for eight and William Gardiner for three, the game looked to be over. A strong middle order resistence led by Asif Jan (56) and Luke Goegan (46) added some respect to the Cats’ chase, but it wasn’t nearly enough in the end as Hoppers Crossing was bowled out for 181 in the 70th over.

No NPL next year

Both parties recently attended mediation sessions in an attempt to resolve the matter, but an agreement could not be reached.

Local VPL giants Melbourne Knights and Green Gully, along with most VPL clubs, have publicly stated their opposition to the FFV model.

State League One outfits Werribee City and Sunshine George Cross were the only established clubs from Melbourne’s West to confirm their interests in joining the NPL. However it now seems likely Werribee City, who won promotion after finishing second in SL1 this season, will take part in the VPL alongside the Knights and Cavaliers next season.

FFV president Nick Monteleone said the idea behind the NPL was to “increase the quality of youth development practices, develop better coaches, require clubs to explain their fee structure and ensure that fees are reasonable and not excessive”.

Monteleone also said it was to “regulate the role of player agents and private academies, improve club governance and financial reporting, correct unsustainable player payments in State League competitions and promote local youth development within the club team structure”.

WILLIAMSTOWN has signed former Collingwood rookie listed player Ben Richmond for the 2014 season. Richmond was on the Magpies’ list for a year and played in 16 VFL games for the club. His rise to the ranks of the AFL took a different path to many of his teammates with Richmond an elite basketball player through his junior sporting career. While training at the Australian Institute of Sport he was offered a contract by Collingwood and decided to turn his hand to AFL. Richmond started off playing forward for the Magpies before moving down back in the second half of the season. Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon said his club saw Richmond as an exciting development prospect. “We received strong endorsements about Ben from a few people at Collingwood and were really impressed when we sat down with him by his attitude and desire to improve,” Dixon said. “He got a taste of AFL last year and it’s great he wants to continue down the football path. He performed some really good defensive jobs last year in the second half of the year and actually played one of his better games against us in Round 16. We see him as a player who is going to keep developing and will hopefully get another chance in the AFL system in future years.” Richmond’s signing adds to Williamstown’s developing key position players with David Fahey and Sean Tighe having already been added, along with Sam Critchley, Simon Deery and Ben Casley all re-committing for season 2014.

Greiser’s eye on draft

By ADEM SARICAOGLU JAKE Greiser admits he was pretty chuffed after learning he led the TAC Cup in contested possession and clearances this season.

The 18-year-old Keilor junior was a standout through 17 games for the Western Jets in 2013, establishing himself as one of the TAC Cup’s leading inside midfielders with an ability to win his fair share of the pill.

“Obviously I didn’t come into the season hoping to win those stats, but I was pretty stoked with that result,” a sheepish Greiser told Star.

“Most weeks I got pretty high numbers in contested ball and clearances, so having found out I did win that was pretty good to hear.”

At 88kg, Greiser was already a ready-made and natural footballer in the trenches coming into his final year of under-18 footy.

year’s end, Greiser sat down with Jets coach Torin Baker and decided to put an emphasis on improving his outside game.

“We spoke about what I needed to do this year for the team and for myself, and I guess that contested side of my game was already my strength,” Greiser said.

“So it was the uncontested stuff with the uncontested marks, handball receives and spread from contests that was a focus each week.

“Last year I wasn’t getting much uncontested ball - and this year I definitely did have good numbers in contested possessions but in uncontested possession, I guess I improved in most weeks.”

That steady rate of improvement led to Greiser having his most consistent year to date, for which he was rewarded mid-season by gaining selection for Vic Metro in the national under-18 championships.

“This year I thought was a really consistent year for myself,” Greiser said.

“Having to play in the midfield each week at the Jets you have to play well - and overall I had a couple of good games.

“I was pretty stoked to play Metro but having that hamstring injury, I couldn’t play that last game against Vic Country, so that was a bit disappointing.

“But against South Australia I played pretty well with the contested ball and clearances and I did my job, so overall I’m pretty happy with the season.”

best eight seconds flat in the agility test. Now all that remains for Greiser is the dreaded waiting game that is the AFL draft period.

THIS week everyone in the West should have been heading to the Werribee Racing Club for the running of the premier racing event the Werribee Cup, but last Wednesday it was moved to Ballarat because the track is not fit for racing. Why were punters and members kept in the dark and only given seven-days notice of the change. You can read my thoughts on this on my website - howdypartnersmedia. com.au - I am sick to death of the shabby way sport in the West is treated. There is no doubt we have no clout because of the politics of the area and I don’t see that changing for a long time. I don’t know about you but I am sick of being treated like the poor cousin.

GOOD to see Ian Denny has not been lost to local footy and has landed the job as senior coach of the Point Cook Football Club who play in the VAFA competition. Daniel Fraser was the club’s inaugural coach and from what I saw, did a great job creating a club that has a good set of values to take it into the future. Ian is a very good coach and the last few years he has done an excellent job with the St Albans Football Club. Coaching at local level has become far more demanding time-wise, and while the rewards have increased I still think there is an element of giving back to the game that far outweighs most pay cheques, and hopefully that will always be the way it is. A well known football figure said to me recently there are two types of people involved in football those that are overpaid and those that are underpaid. He is so correct.

WERRIBEE Masters Football Club is looking for players for the 2014 season when it will field three teams - over-35s, over-40s and blokes who should know better or as they are better known over-47s. Training starts on 14 November, from 6.15pm at Wyndhamvale Reserve in Honour Avenue, and continues every Thursday night till a pre-Christmas barbecue.

THIS Sunday, Vinnie Turcinovich - a well-known sports identity - will be competing in his 15th half-marathon in Shepparton. Vinnie is a member of the Western Suburbs Triathlon Club and is very well known in footy circles having been a player for the Bulldogs under-19s , Werribee and Williamstown and most recently for his junior coaching at Altona Vikings where he was nominated for the ACFA Award. He will be cheered on by his wife Jenny and their three children - Matthew, Ebony and Darcy. Good on you Vinnie and all the best in your role with Avondale Heights in the EDFL next year as reserves coach.

THE Footscray and Hawthorn Hockey Clubs have successfully raised more than $3500 to support breast cancer research.

The money raised will be split between the Jane McGrath Foundation and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Footscray’s Matt Whitbread and Hawthorn’s Jonathan Stebbings joined forces to come up with a ‘Pink Day’ initiative for both of the clubs’ Premier League meetings during the 2013 season.

The events, held in round three at Footscray’s McIvor Reserve and round 15 in Hawthorn, were designed to not only increase breast cancer awareness but also honour and support those affected by the disease from both clubs.

On each occasion the home team wore pink socks, which were sold as part of the fundraising effort. Each club also put on a barbecue and spectators were encouraged to wear pink for the occasion. Just Hockey sponsored the ball boys and girls, who also wore pink polo shirts and caps in each of the games.

Footscray secretary Nicole Virtuoso, who was part of the organising committee, said she was thrilled her club and its members could support such a worthy cause. Both clubs now hope the twice-yearly events become an annual tradition, and plan to hold the events again in rounds eight and 19 of the 2014 Premier League season.

Bands aplenty for festive fun THERE will be family fun for all and plenty of opportunities to bust a groove at the annual Laverton Festival.

This year’s Laverton Festival will feature a children’s activity centre with free face painting, sand art, and plaster painting.

Santa will make a visit and hand out show bags to the children.

There will be free jumping castles, rides and entertainment.

Laverton Festival will host The Police Pipe Band, Hobsons Bay City Band, Laverton Choir plus some amazing local talent!

Children will be entertained by Bop Till U Drop.

It is a free event with free rides, entertainment and show bags up for grabs and there will be market stalls, special visit from Santa, large display of custom cars and great entertainment!

Still Rockin’ is a ’50s to ’70s

rock and roll cover band who will perform at the event. The band has been going for 10 years, playing in numerous occasions such as dinner dances, weddings, birthday parties, RSLs and small local gigs.

Still Rockin’ mainly consists of three members, vocalist Mario Debono, Harmony-Jane Debono on bass guitar and Mark Gassick on lead guitar.

They are a fun family orientated band with a range of old cover music and updated originals from Harmony-Jane who is only 15 years old.

Universal School of Music (USM) is a unique and contemporary music school that offers a wide variety of music programs for all ages and levels. The group will also be headlining the event.

USM provides individual and group tuition in music for guitar,

piano, keyboard, singing, bass, violin, drums, DJ, music theory classes, recording, song writing, performance opportunities, workshops, master classes, scholarships and more.

The Laverton Community Choir is made up of ordinary people, who are committed to reaching out to the community embracing all people, no matter what age, culture or ability, who just love to sing.

Its performers hope that through singing they can promote physical health and the choir performs unaccompanied and accompanied and has a wideranging repertoire of music.

Cruzin’ into festival with knights of chrome VINTAGE Cars are Cruzin into Laverton Festival this year.

Cruzin Knights was founded back in 2000 with a group of mates sharing the same interest, cars.

After 10 years of talking about putting a club together, in early 2011 the group decided that it was time.

Many meetings and discussions took place about what they would like if they started a car club. The one thing the group all agreed on was that it had to be a family orientated car club.

In January 2012, the friends held their first club meeting as a car club.

From 11 founders at this first meeting, Cruzin Knights had over 50 people show up to sign up 10 months. Today, the group has many more members to add to their club.

The club’s latest show generated in excess of $31,000, that is to be donated in full to the Cancer Council. Members would like to say a very special thank you for those members who assisted throughout the day.

AFRICAN Star Dance & Drumming has been entertaining Australians since 2007. The company is focused on providing high-quality service and customer satisfaction in all areas of African dance, drumming and other cultural activities.

The variety of entertainment on offer includes African dance and drumming workshops for kids and adults.

The dance troop specialises in performances at schools, festivals, weddings, kindergartens, fetes, concerts, birthday parties and school holiday programs.

The philosophy behind African Star is to teach people of all ages about African culture and traditions.

Everybody has a star inside of them and when the team at African Star perform they draw out the light and allow viewers to shine it at any event, creating a memorable experience for everyone.

Among the most talented in the industry is group founder Shabba Eshun.

Shabba is a professional dancer from Ghana.

His styles include traditional, contemporary, Comedy, Acrobatic, RnB and hip hop.

He was a member of Asanti Dance Theatre in Ghana West Africa for five years.

He was also an instructor to students touring Ghana from the Deakin University Global Experi-

ence program and the Australian group ‘Wild-Moves’.

Shabba has taught workshops to a variety of people from different cultures, backgrounds, age groups and disabilities.

Through African Footprint International, Shabba had the opportunity to learn sign language, which enabled him to teach and perform with hearing-impaired students.

In 2010, he launched his very own company African Star Dance and Drumming where he continues performing and teaching dance. African Star Dance faciliates workshops to school children and community groups around Victoria.

In 2009, the Australian Government presented Shabba with a 5 Star Community Coach Award for his extensive work in after-school care programs.

African Star Dance conducts community workshops in Footscray, Frankston, Geelong and Werribee.

His performances include Suzuki Night markets, Sydney Road Festival, Darebin Music Feast, Woodford Folk Festival, Rainbow Serpent, Viva Festival and Moomba.

Shabba’s future plans are to further his international career throughout Australia and all over the world.
