Aid for hearing WHEN Louise and Jeremy Rogerson first saw their newborn son’s tiny ear just moments after he was born, they were immediately concerned. The Hillside couple already had one child and knew there was something wrong with little Xander. An audiologist made the immediate diagnosis of Microtia and Atresia affecting his left ear, meaning there is no ear canal or ear drum and Xander suffers from severe hearing loss. They were told that the abnormality occurred during Louise’s pregnancy and only affects one in 6000 to 12,000 people. “We had no idea what is was ... we were pretty worried and didn’t know what it would mean for the rest of his body,” Louise told Star. To make life even harder for the three-year-old, he was recently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder that, compounded with his hearing loss and speech difficulties, often leaves him frustrated and angry. “It’s hard to see it as a parent ... he’s about six months behind where he should be. “His baby sister speaks better than he does.” Despite all of this, the family continues to try to make life as normal as possible for the pre-schooler with a “quirky” personality, including stints at day care and swimming lessons. But they realise life will become more challenging when he attends kindergarten and school. “In a classroom situation or somewhere noisy like a shopping centre, he can’t hear anything. He wears

a hearing aid and that has made a huge difference ... but it’s still hard. “We constantly have doctor appointments ... the main goal is for him to hear before school.” And that might happen after the family met with doctors from the United States who are able to create a complete new ear, ear canal and ear drum, so he will have not only an ear visually, but hearing on the left side as well. The operation can be completed in the one day, but can only be performed in the US and will require a four to six-week recovery process, leaving the family faced with a $100,000 medical bill. But there’s nothing they would not do for their precious child. “I love that little ear, I will miss it, but I want to prevent any bullying, in this day and age it shouldn’t happen, but realistically it will. “We need to know we’ve given him the best chance in life. There’s no length we wouldn’t go to for him. “He will be a totally different person ... he will thrive.” The working parents also have a long list of doctors and specialist appointments they attend with Xander each month which also puts a financial strain on them. A trivia night on Saturday 30 November at the Altona Hockey Club has been organised to help raise funds for the operation. Anyone interested in learning more about Xander’s plight or to make a donation visit www.pandasear. org.au or www.facebook. com.au/pandasear.

A TAYLORS Lakes mother-of-four has been trying to get her autistic son placed on a school bus for the past 10 months. Amanda Waite’s 10-year-old son Alick-Henry, who attends the Jackson School in St Albans, also has epilepsy. A bus service, which used to collect him from a corner near home, has swapped pick-up locations and become too far away to walk to. Ms Waite said Alick-Henry, who cannot wait to go to the toilet, also often used to wet his pants on the 70-minute bus trip home from school.

In addition, Ms Waite said the morning bus service was timed when Alick-Henry needed to take his medication, but she was told the on-board carer could not administer the dose. Ms Waite said because of these reasons, the Jackson School vice-principal has advised her to place Alick-Henry on another bus service, with shorter travel times. However, Ms Waite said the bus company has refused to collect Alick-Henry on the grounds she lives outside its official collection zone and a roundabout near her street is unsafe. But Ms Waite said the bus already collects two children from outside its defined zone and taking a few minutes to go a different way would avoid the roundabout in question. Ms Waite said since the start of the year, she has been in contact with both the bus company and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) trying to resolve the matter. “It’s really upsetting, angry and frustrating,” Ms Waite said. Staff from the office of Bernie Finn, a Western Suburbs MP, have also been trying to help her with the situation for months. “All she wants is for her son to be treated as an equal which in his case appears not to be happening.” Mr Finn’s spokesperson said. But a DEECD spokesperson said the department worked with schools and parents to balance the transport needs of thousands of specialist school students. “Due to the growth in enrolment numbers and other factors, bus services for students attending Jackson School are likely to change,” the spokesperson said. “Decisions on the majority of bus services for the following year are communicated to families in Term 4. “Due to the impact on families’ life and work arrangements, it is difficult to amend services during the year.”

Hospital health hits the headlines By ALESHA CAPONE PUBLIC hospitals in Sunshine and Footscray are failing performance targets and faring poorly under the State Government, according to a Western Suburbs politican. However, the State Government has dismissed Altona MP Jill Hennessy’s claims as “plain wrong. Last week, Ms Hennessy said the State Government had “lost control of the health system. “The state’s health system is struggling to cope and is starved of resources due to $826 million in Napthine Government cuts, Ms Hennessy said. She said an annual report tabled

in parliament showed Western Health, which includes Sunshine Hospital and the Western Hospital in Footscray, has failed key elective surgery indicators. Ms Hennessy said the Western Health report revealed more than 4890 patients remained on its elective surgery waiting list at 30 June last year, higher than the state-wide target. The report also said 68 per cent of emergency patients at Sunshine Hospital were seen within clinically recommended times, below the Victorian target of 80 per cent. In response to the criticism, a spokesman for Health Minister David Davis said Ms Hennessy was “just plain wrong with her

claims about cuts. “The Coalition Government has increased funding to Western Health by 17 per cent, or $72 million more a year in 2013-14 compared to when Labor was in office, he said. “Hypocritically, Jill Hennessy was silent while her Labor mates in Canberra slashed funding to Western Health by more than $28 million over four years. “Western Health, in its own annual report, has attributed its elective surgery challenges to the former Federal Labor Government’s cuts. Western Health CEO, Associate Professor Alex Cockram, said the June 2013 quarter performance report showed improvements in

emergency care access. “The proportion of patients waiting less than four hours in our emergency departments has improved over the past 12 months, with Sunshine Hospital’s performance measure now eight per cent ahead and Western Hospital’s figure seven per cent ahead of the June 2012 figures, she said. “The number of patients on the Western Health elective surgery waiting list has increased due to several factors, including the growth within the catchment area and an increase in the number of Category One patients who require surgery within 30 days and the complex surgical procedures they require.

Great inferno escape By ALESHA CAPONE A MAN has been charged with attempted murder after a pregnant woman and her two young daughters almost died in a suspicious Kings Park house fire last Tuesday. The Kings Park male, 42, has faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of conduct endangering life. Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) officers arrived at Caxton Court to discover the pregnant mother and two girls trapped inside their burning home behind barred windows. The woman’s 16-year-old son was using rocks to try and break the window in an effort to free his mother and sisters. Nearby resident, John North, saw the fire and grabbed a pickaxe in an attempt to remove the window’s bars. MFB Commander Philip Klein said the woman’s son and Mr North also passed wet towels to the trapped trio. Fire trucks from St Albans and Deer Park attended the inferno, alongside 18 firefighters. “What I was confronted with was a mum, an adult woman, laid out in front of the house getting oxygen treatment, and two young children, and an ambulance was also there, Mr Klein said. “It was a very, very emotional scene. Mr Klein said MFB officers decided to enter the house, breaking through a backdoor and heading down a hallway to rescue the mother and the two girls, aged around three and four. “What they were confronted with was a mother and two children behind a barred window and screaming for oxygen, he said. “Was it death they were facing? I’d say so, or even the likelihood of worse injuries because it was a matter of minutes. So they were very fortunate. The girls’ two brothers including the 16-yearold boy were treated for minor burns and their mother was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for observation. After the fire, police removed around 40 cannabis plants from the property. Mr Klein said while many people installed security measures at their homes, residents also needed to plan their escape from emergency situations.

Drugs heist in St Albans A HOUSE full of mature cannabis plants was discovered by police in St Albans on Thursday 7 November. Officers from stations in Keilor Downs and Sunshine spent Friday removing the plants and dismantling the hydroponic set-up at the Yarmouth Ave premises. Police attended the address around 10.45pm on another matter. However, after announcing their arrival, three men ran outside and were arrested in the street. Police located four rooms of mature cannabis plants being grown hydroponically. A 50-year-old St Albans man, a 37-year-old Sunshine North man and a Footscray man, 27, were arrested and taken to the Sunshine police station. The men have all been charged with possessing, cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis. They were released on bail to attend the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court at a later date. Earlier in the week, police arrested and charged a man with trafficking and possessing a drug of dependence and firearm offences, at a Sunshine North house on Wednesday 6 November. Police were called to the Warwick Rd house after receiving a call stating an assault was taking place. At the address, police arrested a 37-yearold man in the front garden. While searching the man, officers allegedly found a .22 calibre pen pistol, small quantities of heroin and amphetamines and two mobile phones. The man was taken to the Keilor Downs police station where he was interviewed. The man later took police back the home, where another search allegedly uncovered two long arm firearms, ammunition and drugs.

Laws halted By ALESHA CAPONE

MPs from the West, who opposed a parliamentary Bill described as a ‘savage attack’ on the rights of road trauma victims, have helped stop the proposed new laws. Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins said the State Government’s proposed changes to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) scheme would have denied compensation to families who have lost loved ones in traffic accidents. Ms Hutchins said the Bill

would have meant a victim’s relative could only claim to have suffered after the accident, if they proved they were unable to work for three years afterwards. Ms Hutchins said this would have instantly prevented children, retirees, stay-at-home parents and people with a disability, which prevented them from working, from receiving assistance. The Ambulance Employees Australia, the United Firefighters Union and Police Association also opposed the TAC

changes, which would have prevented these workers from claiming compensation for mental injuries developed by attending accidents. The Assistant Treasurer, Gordon Rich-Phillips, said the Opposition was putting the interests of plaintiff lawyers ahead of injured Victorians, as the changes would have also capped fees paid to these lawyers under the TAC scheme. “The TAC should not be a cash cow for plaintiff lawyers,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

ST GEORGE Preca Primary School in Caroline Springs is teeming with musical talent and dancers. Earlier this year, the school took part in the song-writing section of the Wakakirri festival. The annual contest searches for the best stories created by Australian primary and secondary schools. St George Preca Primary School entered a song called ‘Earth To Us’ in the competition. Written and performed by a group of Grade 5 and 6 students and their teachers, their tune placed second in the national festival. Wakakirri also includes a dance category, which 120 St George Preca pupils from Grades 3 to 6 participated in. The school told the story of well-known Aussie comedian Anh Do, ‘The Happiest Refugee’ for its showcase, and performed in the Wakakirri State Finals at Hamer Hall. Performing arts teacher, Colleen Azzopardi, said pupils also recently took part in the Count Us In event which is staged in schools across the country, as part of the Music Council of Australia’s national campaign to involve more citizens in music. Youngsters across Australia all sang a song at the same time during the project. “At our school, we value music education because it helps us work, relax and play,” Ms Azzopardi said.

A VICTORIA University researcher is playing a role in efforts to keep an iconic Australian animal from extinction. Doctor Patrick Guay works across the university’s Footscray, St Albans and Werribee campuses. He has embarked on a longterm project with partners Zoos Victoria, the Zoo and Aquarium Association and Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The study will help verify whether the brains of Tasmanian devils get smaller, if they are bred in captivity across generations. Recently Tasmanian devils have been battling the deadly Devil Facial Tumour Disease which has devastated their population. Efforts to repopulate the species have concentrated on breed-

ing the animals in captivity. This is where Dr Guay’s research comes in - because if the brains of animals shrink while they are in captivity, this can diminish their natural survival instincts upon being released back into the wild. “For me it is a way to make a difference for the conservation of Australian animals,” Dr Guay said. “The big problem with captive breeding is that it is often thought of as the initial step of domestication which is known to cause irreversible brain size decrease.” As part of his research, Dr Guay has studied the skulls of Tasmanian devils at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston. Dr Guay said his previous studies into ducks, swans and geese has shown their brain size can shrink by around 11 per

cent while in captivity. However, so far his work with marsupials has revealed their brains will not shrink if they are kept in an ‘enriched’ captive environment. “What this suggests is that if the animal is provided with an enriched environment similar to their natural environment where they have to find their own food - this decreases the chances of having their brains shrink,” Dr Guay said. He said most scientists conducting research want to obtain significant results so they could publish their work. “But in this particular case, getting no particular difference with wild and domesticated animals is what we are hoping for - although I am not trying to pre-empt the results at all,” Dr Guay said. “If there is no change, in this case that is a good news story.”

My great Greek doco success

RRL deal opposed

By ALESHA CAPONE

By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK residents living near the Regional Rail Link have continued their campaign to have a bigger say in the project’s construction. Sunshine North resident John Kodric has sent letters to the Regional Rail Link Authority (RRLA) and Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder. “To get to the point, we do not want a noise barrier wall directly in front of our homes now or ever,” his letters said. Mr Kodric said the wall, proposed by the RRLA, would become a “graffiti ridden eyesore” and provide hiding spots for criminal activity.

The elderly resident also said he and other residents were concerned the proposed wall would not properly mitigate noise levels once freight trains began travelling along the line, to the future $1.5 million Truganina Western Interstate Freight Terminal. “We cannot even sleep properly because of the existing noise levels, and this is only the beginning,” he said. Mr Kodric also said the RRLA “has not been careful in its removal of vegetation in our area and has to date not carefully replanted vegetation like they have in other areas”. However, a RRLA spokes-

person said there had been “no significant vegetation removal as a result of the project, although some removal was necessary to make way for construction”. “With extra trains, there will be an increase in rail noise for some residents already living next to the rail line,” she said. The spokesperson said the RRL project had taken action to offset this, by providing “scientifically-tested noise barriers which will help to block the main source of rail noise”. She said the proposed noise walls would be made with material shaped to discourage graffiti and easily cleaned with highpressure water.

A GREEK-speaking greatgrandmother is enjoying her new-found fame after starring in a documentary. Natalie Cunningham has made a short film about her beloved grandmother Giannoula, who emigrated from Greece to Australia during 1955. The movie, titled ‘You know what? I love you’, was shot in Sunshine and has screened at festivals across the country. “She really loves it and is really enjoying it,” Natalie said of her grandmother’s reaction to the film’s success. Giannoula, who was born in 1918, was delighted to let her 27-year-old granddaughter spend hours interviewing her for the documentary. Natalie said Giannoula was under strict instructions to look at the camera during filming and focus on the lens - but her grandmother’s generous personality dictated otherwise. “We would be halfway through a story and she would turn to the cameraman and say, ‘Do you want a cup of coffee?’” Natalie said. “She was more concerned about us and our comfort and whether we’d eaten that day. “The thing I enjoyed most was the chance to sit down with her and hear her tell stories and know we were filming and would have a record of it, also for the family. “She had endless stories about life in the village, what she was like as a little girl, her mum who passed away when she was in her late teens and how her mother made her dress-

Amiir plays the part By ALESHA CAPONE DERRIMUT teenager Amiir Kiir knows she will need drive and dedication during her career as an actress. The 17-year-old is due to appear on both the big and small screen during 2014, after filming small roles in a film and a television series this year. Amiir said she was thrilled to spend a day filming an airport scene in the Now Add Honey movie, starring Portia de Rossi. Amiir will also appear as a student in The Lost Boys television show. Amiir said she has loved acting, singing and dancing since she was young. This year, she completed Year 12 at Lakeview Senior College in Caroline Springs, where she participated in an ensemble piece and performed a monologue from Romeo and Juliet for assessment. The talented youngster has also performed with Western Edge Youth Arts in Footscray, trained at Playback West and the Tanya Powell Model Agency and sung with a hip-hip choir. Amiir said the biggest challenge of being an actress was competition from her peers. “I can make the time and put in effort, but there is probably someone else out there going for the same role who has put in 10 times more time and effort than me,” she said. “You have to be completely into it 110 per cent and willing to put in all that effort.” But Amiir said she enjoyed stepping into the shoes of dif-

Amiir, who has been signed by agencies the Real People and Showcase Management,

said other young people could become performers if they truly loved the craft. “I think everybody can do it if they are willing to work hard,” she said. “If you’re willing to put in the time, you will progress.”

The analog TV switch off is happening on 10 December 2013* – and there’s no turning back. After this date you won’t see anything if you’re not ready for digital-only TV.

What do I have to do? Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

Grants given to 70 groups

Explosives reports By ALESHA CAPONE CAIRNLEA landowners could soon be informed whether their property has been affected by contamination from the former Albion Explosives Factory. In 2012, the EPA said testing, due to be completed this year, would reveal how far contamination detected in Cairnlea’s groundwater had spread, since the explosives factory closed in 1986. Last week, Star asked the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and Department of Defence (DoD) about the audit. A spokeswoman for the EPA said the defence department “will be contacting people in mid-November

if their properties are affected”. “The audit of the land in Cairnlea is still being finalised, and EPA is still in the process of reviewing the information relating to the clean-up of groundwater,” she said. Star was unable to find out how many properties, if any, were affected by the contamination - and the level and type of pollution in the groundwater. Last year, correspondence between the Victorian Ombudsman George Brouwer and the EPA revealed monitoring had found elevated levels of 2.6 dinitrotoluene - which is used to manufacture TNT - and mononitrotoluene in groundwater in Cairnlea.

Some levels, located south of the Kororoit Creek, exceeded the recommended level humans should come into contact with. Cairnlea residents such as Graeme Blore have raised concerns about a residential and industrial development which Places Victoria has proposed for their suburb, including a park which is “sited on the toxic landfill hillocks abutting the Western Ring Rd”. Western Suburbs MP Khalil Eideh said in Parliament Places Victoria had failed to tell residents “the proposed redevelopment was to be constructed on contaminated land”. “One of the major parks indicated in the plans is located in one of the key areas where heavy con-

tamination was identified by the Environment Protection Authority,” he said. However, a Places Victoria spokesperson said remediation at the proposed park site would be required to undergo “final approval by an independent auditor to meet Environment Protection Authority Victoria standards prior to any development occurring”. The independent audit is presently being conducted, leaving the park’s future in doubt until its completion. A defence spokesperson said soil contamination on the former Albion Explosives Factory site has been remediated.

BRIMBANK City Council has given community grants totalling more than $329,000 to 70 organisations within the area. Chair of the Brimbank administrators John Watson praised all the groups that applied for the grants. “The intentions and objectives of the groups seeking funding illustrates community pride is thriving in Brimbank,” he said. “There are so many organisations working toward betterment for their communities, so narrowing down the list of successful applicants is always a challenging process.” “All 140 submissions met the guidelines for making a community grants application which is a fantastic result for the success of the process and goes to show that there is a good understanding among community groups and members who have applied. “The 70 organisations that have received funding are preparing projects as diverse as health for babies, arts and theatre, gardens, obesity and diabetes, cooking, sports, fiestas and driving tuition for migrants and many others, but the one common thread is community inclusion and wellbeing.”

Overwhelmed or rapt over wrapping? YOU either love or loathe Christmas gift wrapping. Whether it is the actual task, or the sheer scope of the task ahead particularly if you have a large family or many people to buy for, it can be a dreaded task by some. Others revel in the creativity of the task, or the festive spirit of giving, and its meaning. If wrapping gifts and tying real bows intimidates you, there

are many YouTube videos and tutorials you could search for to get a lesson in gift wrapping and bow tying. Even if it doesn’t intimidate you, you may get some great ideas from watching them. Here are some tips for gift wrapping this Christmas. A cheap yet effective wrapping idea is the baker’s twine and newspaper look. It is both vintage and mod-

ern, plus you will feel good about recycling, plus save on money. Try stamped brown paper packages tied with simple ribbon, very classy and effective. Also cheap. Use festive fabric scraps with a nice texture to wrap gifts or tie bows. You might like to use hot or strong glue to fix smaller pieces down. Think tubes for wrapping cookies to give to family and

friends. You could use clear cellophane or thick material around a plastic or paper cylinder so the cookies can be seen through. To jazz up some plain co-

loured wrapping paper, try adding some natural pine cones and greenery embellishments to the ribbon or around the bow. If all else fails, many retailers, including online stores, are

offering free gift wrapping, or you can get your gifts wrapped in the shopping centre for a gold coin donation. At least they will be well presented!

Christmas Party amongst the vines

ONE of the most important festive decisions families make is choosing what sort of Christmas tree to have. While plastic trees are trouble-free, reliable options, with many variations in quality and price these days, many prefer the look, feel and smell of a real tree. The choosing of the ‘perfect’ tree is an exciting event which could become a family tradition, for children and adults alike. Most will head down to their local Christmas tree farm within the first weekend of December, or the week before 1 December. Driving to the farm is an exciting time, play some carols in the car to get everyone in the mood. Once the trees are spotted

from the road, wind down the windows and take in a deep breath of that beautiful scent. Everyone can get involved in walking around the farm and choosing the best possible tree for your home. Just ensure you have worked out the height of your ceiling at home, taking into consideration the size of your star or angel on top, and the stand for the tree. Don’t forget once it is home to keep the cut base in a bucket, and top up the water as often as necessary. There are also many benefits from choosing an artificial tree. The convenience of having an artificial tree from year to year is very comforting. Unlike a real tree, there is no hassle bolting the trunk to the base or hassling with sticky

pine needles and constant use of the vacuum cleaner. Your artificial tree also does not require any watering or special care and maintenance. It is also much easier to decorate an artificial Christmas tree than a real one. Instead of spending your money on a real tree from year to year, buying an artificial tree is an investment that will last for years. With an artificial Christmas tree, you don’t have to worry about allergies that are so prevalent today. There are plenty of green trees to choose from, with varying quality ranging from the shiny plastic look to the reallook branches that have different shades of green to mimic a live tree.

Kev’s Greatest Gadget Just as we have the dazzling displays of Kit Kats, Flakes and Freddo Frogs to tempt us at the supermarket checkout, I always find it hard to resist the itty bitty little gadgets you find on display next to the cash register at most homewares stores. You know the ones I mean – teeny little silver turkey thermometers, micro-sized cheese graters … fridge magnets shaped like chickens with built-in tape measures.

garlic,” she replied, plucking one out of the display and holding it up for inspection. “See? You put your garlic cloves inside, and then give it a roll.” To demonstrate, she then rolled the squishy little yellow cone under her palm on the counter. Personally, I thought the whole idea was a load of codswallop, but Kevin was already sold. Seconds later, so was the yellow garlic cone (I thought the hot pink one looked nicer.)

Well, the other week Kevin and I stumbled on a beauty. At least, Kevin did. We’d just popped into the Chef’s Hat in South Melbourne to buy some new frypans when Kevin suddenly became mesmerized by some colourful little silicone cones on display at the checkout. “What do these do?” he asked the lady behind the counter. “They peel

Anyway, the following week Kevin got his first opportunity to put his new gadget to use. Every Monday night at our house, we have Kev’s Cook Up, featuring his famous ‘Monday Mushies’ – three different types of mushrooms sautéed in lashings of garlic and wine. Kevin took three unpeeled garlic cloves, sliced off the woody ends, and eagerly stuffed them into his cone. Then he rolled it on the bench, tipped out the cloves … and voila! They were all perfectly peeled. He did three more … and three more perfectly peeled cloves came out. He was beside himself with excitement and very quick to say to me “I told you so.”

I must say I was fascinated when a workmate (and fellow foodie) told me about the pizza base he’d recently made, requiring just two ingredients – yoghurt and flour! Great if you don’t want to muck around with yeast, or don’t have the time or patience to wait for dough to prove. This recipe from KidSpot Kitchen will make one pizza: In a bowl, combine one cup of self raising flour with one cup of Greek or natural yoghurt and bring together to form a ball. Turn out onto a floured board, then knead and roll. Knead for five to eight minutes, before rolling out. Good thing I had my iPhone handy, because I have photographic evidence. See for yourself. The silicone garlic cone really is a winner!

Keilor Hotel’s beautiful function areas can cater for any event large or small.

Steeped in history THE rich history of the hotel is just one of the things that makes Keilor Hotel so special. Keilor Hotel, owned by Ray Dodd since 1974, is the oldest hotel owned by one family in Australia, and can cater for large scale weddings/ functions or small intimate degustation dinners. Its reputable food and service puts it above the rest with stunning functions areas, manicured gardens and is sure to make your Christmas functions a spectacular event. Award winning executive chef Peter Galt has spent the last year listening to what the customers want and their expectations. After careful planning and execution, he has developed an a la carte menu that combines classic pub fare with dishes which highlight the best of local and seasonal produce

with daring flavour and texture. It is this modern take on food which will enhance diners’ experience and leave them wanting more. When planning your next function, consider the marquee area at Keilor Hotel which has the capacity to seat 240 people and with separate entry and surrounding gardens. The Vinery offers French provincial style settings with open roof, a separate bar and toilets with a cocktail capacity for 120 or 60 seated. For a special night of fine dining, there is the Grange Cellar serving a degustation menu in the original 160-year-old cellar. The hotel also has a gaming room and a Thirsty Camel bottle shop with a large selection of wines and spirits.

The Keilor Hotel offers traditional pub fare with a modern gastronomic flair that allows customers to taste innovative techniques and produce in award welcoming environment. The hotel now has the largest wood fire pizza oven in Melbourne situated in the Vinery. Under the 200-year-old gums, it is a great area to enjoy a pizza and a glass of wine or a cold beer and relax on a Sunday afternoon while listening to great music. Later this month will see the addition of the Sunday session. Keilor Hotel is located at 670 Older Calder Highway, Keilor, and is open seven days a week. Call 9334 0400 for information on the diverse range of packages to suit all your needs and to make bookings. Visit www. keilorhotel.com.au for details.

Keilor still winless By ADEM SARICAOGLU KEILOR remains winless and second-last in the Senior Division of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association after suffering a heavy first innings loss to South Caulfield on Saturday. The Blues had been put on the back foot seven days earlier after being handed the ball, conceding a whopping 408 runs to the home team, which declared its innings after 73 overs just four wickets down. Keilor came into the second day’s play at 0/19 in its pursuit of 409, but could only last through to the 59th over before losing all its wickets for just 212. Having claimed first innings points by 196 runs, South Caulfield then had a second dig in the middle, and in 18 overs reached 3/123 by the time stumps were called. This weekend Keilor will host Old Mentonians at Robert Bruce Reserve in Albion. Meanwhile it was a much more fruitful weekend for Keilor Park in the VTCA North Division. The Devils had not yet tasted victory going into their round three away clash against the Doutta Stars and would have been desperate to finally get a win coming into the second day’s play on Saturday, needing to defend their all-out 206 from seven days earlier. The Stars had made 0/5 in two overs late on day one but resumed their chase in shaky fashion on Saturday, losing both their openers for a combined 11 runs. However the Stars’ middle order rallied to get the host back into the game, which in the end came down to the wire. Tail-enders Mark Rossitto and Luke Clowes needed just eight runs for victory but ultimately fell seven runs short courtesy of Keilor Park skipper Jamie Manning, who bowled Clowes to ensure his side’s first win of the summer. Manning claimed two wickets for the day but it was Dilshan Udage Kankanamage who had the last laugh, leading Keilor Park’s bowling attack with three crucial wickets through the Doutta Stars’ middle order. This weekend Keilor Park will host West Coburg in another two-day game at Ray Davies Reserve.

A BRILLIANT bowling performance from Jake Haberfield lifted Footscray Edgewater to a nail-biting 14 run win against Prahran on Saturday. After setting the True Blues 309 for victory on day one, Footscray found itself on the back foot as Prahran recovered from an early stumble. From 1/0, the batting side moved along to 1/102 as Adam Bull and Steve De Bolfo combined for the triple digit partnership. The re-introduction of Haberfield into the attack brought about the demise of the latter, as De Bolfo was bowled for 32 and Jack Taylor soon followed for a duck. Bull remained at the crease despite the double strike and combined with James Miller for a 135-run partnership. Seemingly cruising at 4/241, the Footscray bowlers hit back.

Sports

shorts United they stand GRAND United was the only Williamstown and District Cricket Association A Turf home team to score a win in round five of the competition on Saturday. United’s bowling attack proved to be far too good for Melton Centrals in their one-day clash at Parsons Reserve, successfully defending its 9/156. Luke Fox was the star claiming five wickets as Centrals capitulated to be bowled out for just 51 after 22 overs. In other one-day results on Saturday, Bellbridge was victorious over West Newport after reaching its target of 172 with two overs to spare and one wicket in hand. Scott Walker top-scored with 47. Meanwhile the Williamstown Colts were too good for Williamstown Congs, getting to their target of 127 in the 34th over. Gellibrand was also able to snare victory on the road, defeating Melton South Primary School by exactly 100 runs on Saturday. KEALBA Green Gully had a good weekend in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association’s Luscombe Shield, scoring back-to-back wins in two one-day games against the Clarkefield Brumbies and Gladstone Park respectively. Opener Andrew Lambropoulos was the star on both days in what proved to be two relatively easy wins for the Cougars. On Saturday Lambropoulos was unbeaten on 64, while on Sunday against Gladstone Park he got to 67 before getting stumped. However those two results were not good enough to clinch top spot, which is still occupied by an undefeated Pascoe Vale Central team that looks to be the Cougar’s main threat in their pursuit of a three-peat later this summer. Meanwhile Sydenham Hillside remains fifth on the Luscombe Shield table after going down to Pascoe Vale Central on Sunday. Having had Saturday off, the Storm couldn’t defend its 8/176 on Sunday, but did push the Luscombe Shield’s frontrunner all the way. Pascoe Vale Central reached 6/180 with just four balls to spare with skipper Cameron Hare not out on 96.

Haberfield again secured backto-back wickets and this time he was joined by Travis Dean who also made a double strike. Dean removed Bull for 163 and True Blues captain Sam Coates for 11 to leave the chase in tatters. The remaining wickets also fell in quick succession as Footscray ended the Prahran innings at 294 in the 89th over. Haberfield finished the match with the dominant figures of 7/82 from 27 overs. Since joining Footscray in the off-season, the opening bowler has taken 19 wickets, the most of any Premier Cricket bowler. He was well supported by Dean, who finished with figures of 2/23 while Hamish Winter-Irving took one wicket. The result sees Footscray move into outright second place on the Premier Cricket ladder with a 5-1 win/loss record for the season.

Jake Haberfield continued his outstanding season for Footscray, taking seven wickets against Prahran. 107204 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI The Bulldogs are just three points behind top of the table Carlton. When round seven of the season

continues this weekend, Footscray will take on 15th placed Frankston in a two-day fixture.

WILLIAMSTOWN has signed former Collingwood rookie listed player Ben Richmond for the 2014 season. Richmond was on the Magpies’ list for a year and played in 16 VFL games for the club. His rise to the ranks of the AFL took a different path to many of his team-mates with Richmond an elite basketball player through his junior sporting career. While training at the Australian Institute of Sport he was offered a contract by Collingwood and decided to turn his hand to AFL. Richmond started off playing forward for the Magpies before moving down back in the second half of the season. Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon said his club saw Richmond as an exciting development prospect. “We received strong endorsements about Ben from a few people at Collingwood and were really impressed when we sat down with him by his attitude and desire to improve,” Dixon said. “He got a taste of AFL last year and it’s great he wants to continue down the football path. He performed some really good defensive jobs last year in the second half of the year and actually played one of his better games against us in Round 16. We see him as a player who is going to keep developing and will hopefully get another chance in the AFL system in future years.” Richmond’s signing adds to Williamstown’s developing key position players with David Fahey and Sean Tighe having already been added, along with Sam Critchley, Simon Deery and Ben Casley all re-committing for season 2014.

No NPL next year By ADEM SARICAOGLU FOOTBALL Federation Victoria has officially confirmed the Victorian model of the National Premier League will not be introduced for the 2014 season. The FFV made the announcement via a media release late last week. It means the Victorian Premier League will continue in its normal format next year. “It is with great regret and disappointment that the FFV board announces that the National Premier Leagues (NPL) will not be introduced in 2014,” the release said. The FFV had planned in September to announce the successful applicants that would take part in the new league. However, the Magistrates Court restrained the governing body from making an announcement and referred the matter to the Supreme Court. The action was brought on by a group of ‘co-signatory’ clubs who strongly opposed the FFV’s model for the NPL, citing numerous issues that included restrictions on junior participation, registration costs, facility requirements and their strong dissatisfaction with the FFV’s consultation process. Both parties recently attended mediation sessions in an attempt to resolve the matter, but an agreement could not be reached. Local VPL giants Melbourne Knights and Green Gully, along with most VPL clubs, have publicly stated their opposition to the FFV model. State League One outfits Werribee City and Sunshine George Cross

One-run heartache By ADEM SARICAOGLU

Werribee City and Sunshine George Cross were both in the running to join the now postponed National Premier League in 2014. 106166 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT were the only established clubs from Melbourne’s West to confirm their interests in joining the NPL. However it now seems likely Werribee City, who won promotion after finishing second in SL1 this season, will take part in the VPL alongside the Knights and Cavaliers next season. Despite the setback, the FFV is still keen to implement the NPL initiative into the Victorian footballing landscape over coming years. FFV president Nick Monteleone

said the idea behind the NPL was to “increase the quality of youth development practices, develop better coaches, require clubs to explain their fee structure and ensure that fees are reasonable and not excessive”. Monteleone also said it was to “regulate the role of player agents and private academies, improve club governance and financial reporting, correct unsustainable player payments in State League competitions and promote local youth development within the club team structure”.

SUNSHINE Eagles coach Earl Byrne does not believe his side has forgotten how to win a game of baseball just yet. That’s despite the fact Sunshine remains the only team in Division One baseball yet to win a single game this season. The luckless Eagles remain 0-6 after falling narrowly short of victory on the road against Blackburn 7-6 on Sunday. Despite watching his side’s losing streak stretch to six, Byrne remained very upbeat after the game. “We were pretty stiff,” Byrne said.“We made a couple of little blunders at critical times that cost us late in the game but overall I was reasonably happy with the boys. They kept at it all game for the whole nine innings, so that was pretty good.” Byrne remains adamant his troops are still confident their first win is just around the corner. But the coach does admit his side has to remain wary about becoming too despondent about its horrid start to the summer.“We need to be careful of our mindset in games because we could end up forgetting how to win,” Byrne said. “I don’t think we’re in that mindset just yet but we do have to watch it. “We have a bunch of guys that keep trying week in week out and they do believe we’re not far off winning some games, so as long as we’ve still got that belief, I think we can still win.” The Eagles will get their chance at revenge this Wednesday evening at Altona’s Melbourne Ballpark, where they’ll again face Blackburn. Adam Irons, who was Sunshine’s best

Sunshine lost by a single run against Blackburn on Sunday. 92655 Picture: MATHEW LYNN hitter on Sunday, will most likely be the Eagles’ starting pitcher for that game. “I think we match up against Blackburn pretty well,” Byrne said. “We’ll probably have Adam Irons, who’s a quality pitcher for us, so I think we’ll be in pretty good stead on Wednesday night to win our first game.” Sunshine’s battle with Blackburn will be followed by a game between Upwey and Essendon on Wednesday evening, while Newport will face Sandringham in the second game to be played at the Melbourne Ballpark tonight (Tuesday).

Greiser’s eye on draft By ADEM SARICAOGLU JAKE Greiser admits he was pretty chuffed after learning he led the TAC Cup in contested possession and clearances this season. The 18-year-old Keilor junior was a standout through 17 games for the Western Jets in 2013, establishing himself as one of the TAC Cup’s leading inside midfielders with an ability to win his fair share of the pill. “Obviously I didn’t come into the season hoping to win those stats, but I was pretty stoked with that result,” a sheepish Greiser told Star. “Most weeks I got pretty high numbers in contested ball and clearances, so having found out I did win that was pretty good to hear.” At 88kg, Greiser was already a ready-made and natural footballer in the trenches coming into his final year of under-18 footy. However, in the hope of hearing his name called by an AFL club come

year’s end, Greiser sat down with Jets coach Torin Baker and decided to put an emphasis on improving his outside game. “We spoke about what I needed to do this year for the team and for myself, and I guess that contested side of my game was already my strength,” Greiser said. “So it was the uncontested stuff with the uncontested marks, handball receives and spread from contests that was a focus each week. “Last year I wasn’t getting much uncontested ball - and this year I definitely did have good numbers in contested possessions but in uncontested possession, I guess I improved in most weeks.” That steady rate of improvement led to Greiser having his most consistent year to date, for which he was rewarded mid-season by gaining selection for Vic Metro in the national under-18 championships. “This year I thought was a really consistent year for myself,” Greiser said. “Having to play in the midfield each week at the Jets you have to play well - and overall I had a couple of good games. “I was pretty stoked to play Metro but having that hamstring injury, I couldn’t play that last game against Vic Country, so that was a bit disappointing. “But against South Australia I played pretty well with the contested ball and clearances and I did my job, so overall I’m pretty happy with the season.”

Jake Greiser kicks clear against Dandenong earlier this year. 97935 Greiser recovered from that hamstring and returned to the Jets, leading them to the finals before gaining an invitation to the state draft combine in early October, where he ran a personal

best eight seconds flat in the agility test. Now all that remains for Greiser is the dreaded waiting game that is the AFL draft period. “It’s definitely a nerve-racking time

because it’s pretty much out of my control what’s going to happen,” Greiser said. “So fingers crossed something happens.”

West anger at racing move THIS week everyone in the West should have been heading to the Werribee Racing Club for the running of the premier racing event the Werribee Cup, but last Wednesday it was moved to Ballarat because the track is not fit for racing. Why were punters and members kept in the dark and only given seven-days notice of the change. You can read my thoughts on this on my website - howdypartnersmedia. com.au - I am sick to death of the shabby way sport in the West is treated. There is no doubt we have no clout because of the politics of the area and I don’t see that changing for a long time. I don’t know about you but I am sick of being treated like the poor cousin. GOOD to see Ian Denny has not been lost to local footy and has landed the job as senior coach of the Point Cook Football Club who play in the VAFA competition. Daniel Fraser was the club’s inaugural coach and from what I saw, did a great job creating a club that has a good set of values to take it into the future. Ian is a very good coach and the last few years he has done an excellent job with the St Albans Football Club. Coaching at local level has become far more demanding time-wise, and while the rewards have increased I still think there is an element of giving back to the game that far outweighs most pay cheques, and hopefully that will always be the way it is. A well known football figure said to me recently there are two types of people involved in football those that are overpaid and those that are underpaid. He is so correct. WERRIBEE Masters Football Club is looking for players for the 2014 season when it will field three teams - over-35s, over-40s and blokes who should know better or as they are better known over-47s. Training starts on 14 November, from 6.15pm at Wyndhamvale Reserve in Honour Avenue, and continues every Thursday night till a pre-Christmas barbecue. The club has a website www.werribeemasters. com.au and if you want more information contact the senior coaches Brett Cook 0424 984 013 or ‘J.R.’ John Ratcliffe on 0402 446 903, or for any other information contact president Jason Bezzina on 0488 456 756. The club has been going since 1983 and has had the likes of Tony Pastore, Mark Brunato and Nigel Kellett represent the club. THIS Sunday, Vinnie Turcinovich - a well-known sports identity - will be competing in his 15th half-marathon in Shepparton. Vinnie is a member of the Western Suburbs Triathlon Club and is very well known in footy circles having been a player for the Bulldogs under-19s , Werribee and Williamstown and most recently for his junior coaching at Altona Vikings where he was nominated for the ACFA Award. He will be cheered on by his wife Jenny and their three children - Matthew, Ebony and Darcy. Good on you Vinnie and all the best in your role with Avondale Heights in the EDFL next year as reserves coach. GREEN Gully Tennis Club will host two special guests this week. As part of its involvement in the Australian Open Blitz, the club will welcome the men’s and women’s Australian Open trophies. The event will take place on Thursday from 6pm at the club. Green Gully committee member Chris Saliba said it is going to be a big thrill to have the trophies on site. “It is great. It has already created a lot of excitement among the juniors and we have seen a lot of them register for the Australian Open Blitz,” he said. “It ... really shows the community the size of events we can cater for and the facilities we have got. Hopefully that will lead to more people signing up and playing competition, having memberships and taking up coaching.” The Australian Open Blitz is a national competition, run by Tennis Australia, that allows both new and experienced players the chance to win major prizes. There is also the chance to have a

The arrival of the Australian Open trophies continues what has been an exciting time for Green Gully with the club hitting winners both on and off the court. “It (our membership) is definitely going upwards which is good,” Saliba said. “We have about 150 odd mem-

bers at the moment and we are hoping to get over 200. Over the past 12 months the committee has been doing a lot of improvements to the club. “We are about to put in a pergola and an electric barbecue just to help with the whole social side of tennis as well and we are also about to resurface four of our courts. “Hopefully that means we will see a spike in memberships and people

Preve offers value, sculpted styling By EWAN KENNEDY

Proton Preve is now in Australia and the Malaysian car maker has high hopes for its renewed attack on our market.

A red illuminated instrument panel, soft-touch dash panel and all the gadget controls gives Preve its technical edge.

A COMPACT family sedan from Malaysian manufacturer Proton, the Preve, comes Down Under in two variants. The Preve GX five-speed manual and Preve GX six-speed continuously variable automatic. Incidentally, Proton would like us to pronounce Preve to rhyme with cafe so as to give the new car a European flavour. Proton Preve offers excellent value for money as it has a drive-away price of $15,990 for the five-speed manual transmission and $17,990 for the six-speed continuously variable transmission. These prices are $3000 under the launch prices announced earlier this year. Proton tells us the prices will remain until the end of 2013. Until then you can get a Proton Preve for price of a Toyota Yaris or Mazda2, whereas it’s pretty much line ball with the larger Corolla or Mazda3. A sharply sculpted body with a wide stance and 10-spoke 16inch alloy wheels looks good, though it doesn’t really stand out from the madding crowd in this extremely competitive market segment in Australia. Upmarket features in his low-cost car include LED projector headlights and daytime running lights. This is a good-sized car and Preve has generous leg, head and shoulder room for four adult occupants. It can carry up

to five if those in the rear aren’t over wide. Mum, dad and three pre-teens fit easily. Seats are covered in plush cloth and all have height adjustable headrests, with active headrests in front for added safety. The boot is already a good size and the rear seat has a 6040 split folding function to take longer items. Hooks are positioned throughout the Preve and are ideal for clothing, bags and packages. The top of the dash panel is made of a soft touch non-reflective material. The tilt adjustable, multi-function steering wheel carries controls for the audio and Bluetooth systems as well as mobile phone. The comprehensive instrument panel has both analogue and digital instrumentation. The onboard computer indicates distance travelled between two points for up to three trips and journey time. There’s information on approximate distance to empty, instantaneous fuel consumption, total fuel used and distance travelled since the last reset. In keeping with its sporty aspirations for the new car the Preve instrument panel is illuminated in red. The audio system, with AM/FM radio, CD/ MP3 player, USB and auxiliary ports, is located in the centre panel, which at its base includes the iPOD and Bluetooth ports, and a 12-volt socket hidden un-

der a sliding cover. Proton’s own design Campro engine is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre until, producing 80 kW at 5750 rpm and 150 Nm at 4000 rpm. Two new transmissions: a five-speed manual or CVT automatic with six driverselectable ratios, put power to ground through the Preve’s front wheels. A comprehensive safety package includes six airbags including full-length curtain units. Crash prevention features include Electronic Stability control, Traction control, ABS brakes, active front head rests, reversing sensors and speedsensitive, door locking and unlocking. Proton Preve has achieved a five-star rating in crash testing. The ride and handling of the Preve are what you would expect from a vehicle with some Lotus input - better than average for its class. (Proton once owned the British racing car maker.) But the Preve leans in the direction of safety and comfort and is far from being a sporting model. The engine has a modest maximum output of 80 kilowatts, and has to be kept on song by good use of the transmission to get reasonable performance. You get a lot of car for a very modest price from Proton’s Preve as it competes with cars the next size up.
