Cr Sandra Wilson was elected mayor for the next 12 months at a special council meeting last Friday 8 November with Cr Colleen Gates elected as deputy major. She also thanked her husband and her family for their ongoing support. A COLLECTION of superb pieces from talented students at Bayside P-12 College was on display during the school’s annual Arts Technology Exhibition. The exhibition, held at the school recently, showcased the work of students from all three campuses, spanning from Prep to Year 12. The exhibition incorporated all artistic mediums including photography, media, visual communication, sculpture, art, textile, wood, food and information technology with performances by the music and drama students on the night. Campus principal, Milan Matejin said the exhibition was an opportunity to display the talents of all the students at the school. “(The exhibition was a) showcase for student talent and hard work across all mediums of the arts, displaying the progression made from our junior grades through to the professional work produced by our Year 12 students.” Artworks displayed on billboards in Newport to promote the night and the invitations were the design of Year 12 student Joshua Legaspi. Community and International Program co-ordinator Tracy James said Joshua was a great example of the school’s talent. “Joshua’s art work is a wonderful example of the level of talent displayed by our students. WILLIAMSTOWN residents are a charitable bunch, ranking among the 20 most generous postcodes in Victoria. Williamstown was ranked among the 20 most generous postcodes, in terms of giving as a percentage (0.18) of income, according to the NAB Charitable Giving Index released last. The index showed donations to charity increased by 2.5 per cent in the past 12 months, and are up by more than 11 per cent since December 2010. In Victoria, people in Williamstown made the list with people in Brunswick East the most generous, donating the biggest proportion of their annual income to charity. In terms of the highest amount donated in Victoria, those in Brighton gave the most. NAB chief economist, Alan Oster, said that charitable giving in Australia had experienced an upturn in growth over past two months (to August), reversing the previous downward trend. This has occurred despite signs of a slowing domestic economy, softening labour market and heightened consumer anxiety over the cost of living. “Australians are increasingly generous - and although donors from higher income postcodes tend to donate the most in dollar terms, they do not necessarily donate the most relative to their incomes,” Mr Oster said. Older donors, aged 65 plus, have the highest average annual donations for all charities, donated more frequently across most categories and supported more charities. “Compared to older Australians, those aged 15-24 exhibited big fluctuations in the rate of giving across most charity sub-sectors, reflecting uncertainty in unemployment for the cohort.”

LAST week, Star reported there will be no inquiry into the development around major hazard facilities after it was knocked back in State Parliament. State Planning Minister Matthew Guy said this week in 2010 the Government endorsed the work of the Major Hazard Advisory Committee. Mr Guy said the committee introduced detailed planning and development requirements including threshold distances in the Victoria Planning Provisions (VPP’s). The VPP is a comprehensive set of standard planning provisions and provided a standard format for all Victorian planning schemes “The government has also recently completed its review of the industrial zones to ensure appropriate standards are adhered to,” Mr Guy said. The inquiry wanted to examine the appropriateness of approving new residential developments within close proximity to major hazard facilities. Hobsons Bay is home to eight of the state’s 45 major hazard facilities which are all in close proximity to residential areas. Hobsons Bay City Council strongly supported the inquiry and asked for an urgent risk assessment. The motion was defeated 20 votes to 18.

Cup meet moves on By XAVIER SMERDON WERRIBEE Racing Club’s flagship event has been postponed as Racing Victoria announced that the track would not be ready to host the Werribee Cup on Wednesday 13 November. The meeting will instead be transferred to Ballarat to give more time for a new multi-million dollar renovation of the inside section of the track to consolidate. As a result, the TAB Werribee Cup, which was scheduled to be run next Wednesday, will now be conducted at Werribee on Sunday, 15 December 2013. The 2000-metre Benchmark 78 race that was to have been run as the Cup on Wednesday will retain its $80,000 stake, but will carry a different name for the new Ballarat meeting. The remainder of the race program remains unchanged.
The inside seven metres of the Werribee track underwent a major renovation following the abandonment of the club’s meeting on 17 July 2013. It has remained out of commission during the Spring Racing Carnival so that it could best consolidate for Werribee’s busy summer racing period. RV’s Chief Executive, Bernard Saundry, said the decision to reschedule the Cup, made in consultation with the Victorian Jockeys Association (VJA), had been made to allow the renovated section of track further time to consolidate. “It is important for the industry and the local community that racing return to Werribee with the track in peak condition and we are not satisfied that it would be at its optimum for next Wednesday’s meeting, Saundry said. “The inside seven metres, which has under-
gone a major renovation since July, has made pleasing progress over the past fortnight with the warmer weather, but it has not quite consolidated to the standard we would like to commence racing on it next Wednesday. “We are taking a conservative approach and allowing the inside of the track further time to consolidate and remain confident that it will be of the required standard for racing when the rescheduled Werribee Cup is set to run on Sunday, 15 December. The WRC will be contacting people with bookings for next Wednesday in person and working to accommodate alternate arrangements for the 15 December meeting. Nominations for Wednesday’s transferred Ballarat meeting have been extended to 10am tomorrow, with acceptances to be taken at 9am on Monday, 11 November.

Bonni’s not a flight risk any more FROM the moment cockatiels Bonni and Clyde met they were inseparable. That’s why owner Sandi Maryanne Kozole refused to give up when Bonni flew away from her hand after she was spooked by her father’s Electus parrot. The former resident moved to Queensland 10 years ago and was visiting her sick mother in Altona Meadows when the unthinkable happened. Ms Kozole hand-reared the cock-
atiels from six weeks old and has had them for the past eight years. “I wasn’t going to stop until I found her, she said. “I can’t imagine them (Bonni and Clyde) not being together. Bonni flew away six days after Ms Kozole arrived in Melbourne on August 22, and thanks to her perseverance and the assist of the community she was reclaimed last week. “I still don’t believe myself that I got her back. The bird was missing for nine weeks and four days with her owner
spending every day pursuing her rescue efforts. From the day Bonni flew off until the day she was found, Ms Konzole was out every day dropping letters and delivering them to 2500 homes around Altona. “I think I’ve walked from here to Queensland three times over how much I’ve done, she said. Bonni was found exhausted in the garden of a a Williamstown resident last week and was taken to the vet. The bird was kept with a carer before another woman saw a vet
advertisement online and matched it with a missing poster at the local skate park. The reunion was emotional to say the least. “These two guys are my family. It’s just us three. They’re my babies, Ms Konzole said. She said had received 175 calls from people who had spotted her and was overwhelmed by the response from the public. Bonni is on her way to a full recovery after her adventure and now happily back with Clyde.

Driving demand By NICOLE VALICEK DEMAND for retirement property in Hobsons Bay is set to increase, according to The Village Williamstown general manager Peter Mills. Research released by Macquarie last week revealed that Australia’s baby boomers comprise 25 per cent of Australia’s population. According to the research they hold 56 per cent of the country’s assets and 59 per cent of the population’s net worth. Meanwhile Williamstown has a higher number of baby boomers (16.2 per cent) than the average for Victoria (15.6
per cent) and Australia (15.9 per cent). According to Mr Mills, who has worked in the retirement living sector for more than 20 years, the new generation of baby boomers want to live a different retired life to their parents. “There have been numerous changes in the years that I’ve been involved in the industry, one of the most common things is younger retirees looking for this type of accommodation,” he said. He said demands for independence, health and wellbeing and security is driving the
growth for property in the retirement village sector. “They like to be able to have the time to travel and do things they like to do without the burden of looking after a big house and big garden,” he said. “They want to still have the facilities to enjoy a home life and have the freedom to leave their property anytime, knowing its secure.” Mr Mills said there were only two retirement villages in Hobsons Bay and as the need increases there will be a problem with supply and demand.

ALTONA North’s very own ‘child of rock and roll’ Bobby Bright has jumped back into the limelight with his first recording in more than 30 years. The ’60s Aussie rock icon newly released EP titled Child of Rock and Roll will be launched on Thursday 14 November at The St Kilda MeMo Theatre in Ackland St. Bobby Bright will perform all the songs featured on the new EP live and will be joined on stage by the entire band that played on the recording. The night will also include a special guest performance by Colleen Hewitt.
“Songwriting has always been second nature to me, so to get the chance to record some new originals with guys of this calibre was fantastic,” Bobby said. Bobby said the EP is in a way a fascinating five-song chronicle of his life since the heady days of Bobbie and Laurie and the Go Show. “It was nice to be in there working on my own stuff and it was very nice to have the time to work on it until we were really finished,” he said. The duo was among the first wave of the Australian pop era between 1964 and 1967 and regularly had hit singles in the charts.
Bobby, who has not done a lot of solo recording, said he is thrilled to be back doing what he loves. “I’ve always been singing, I’ve always been writing songs just not so much in the big scenario, so to speak,” he said. “As soon as you hit the stage you go this is what I’m meant to do.” As for the EP he said there was one critic in particular he wanted to impress. “If my grandson likes it I’ll be happy, that’s the bottom line, starting from there anything’s good.” The Child of Rock and Roll EP is available on CD through www.bobbybright.com.au.

Kevin and Margaret Davies will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday. Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI 108922
In the right frame By NICOLE VALICEK KEVIN and Margaret Davies may say they have led a simple life but reaching their diamond wedding anniversary is anything but ordinary. This Thursday 14 November the couple will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary at a surprise function the family has cooked up. The pair swept each other off their feet as ballroom dancing partners after meeting at a Dance School in Melbourne. They married two years later at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newport. “We grew on each other I think,” Kevin said.
Margaret, who worked as a dressmaker for a city firm and still enjoys sewing bits and pieces for her family, said perseverance was a key to the success of their marriage. “We seem to get on okay, had our moments of course. We just worked out okay.” “We’ve just been lucky I suppose and a lot of hard work,” she added. Kevin, who worked as a rigger at A.C.I Glassworks in Spotswood, suggests a core ingredient to the recipe of a successful marriage is to stop, think and talk things out. “We never did anything without discussing it between
ourselves first,” he said. “We’re complete opposites, I think that works out pretty well.” The couple have four children, 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. “Having a big family, we are always busy and we love it,” Margaret said. The pair said they still enjoy spending time together and with their family, who are all very close. “We don’t owe anybody anything, except love to each other,” Kevin said. “We depend on each other more now that we’re older,” Margaret added.

Foreshore activities push HOBSONS Bay City Council is inviting commercial operators to apply for a permit to conduct recreation activities on Council-managed foreshore land, including beaches, foreshore reserves and parks. The council recently adopted its Commercial Recreation Activity on Foreshore Land Policy and is implementing a trial over the 2013-2014 summer season. The policy covers commercial recreation activity including, but not limited to, wind sports, paddle sports, active recreation (scuba diving/snorkeling, beach volleyball, beach soccer) and commercial fitness training along the Altona and Williamstown foreshores. It aims to offer and encour-
age the community to participate in a range of physical activities, as well as establish a consistent management approach to the evaluation and approval of commercial recreation activities conducted on the foreshore. The expressions of interest period is now open for the 2013-2014 summer season. Applications close on Friday, 15 November. A shortlist of selected operators will then be invited to apply for a permit. A commercial recreation activity may only be conducted on foreshore land (including beaches) if a permit or licence is issued for a specific period. Fees will apply for conducting commercial recreation activity in accordance with the
council’s fee schedule, as adopted and amended annually. All permits will expire on 31 March 2014. The council will seek feedback from the community, businesses and commercial recreation operators over the 201314 summer season to help shape the final policy. Commercial recreation operators will be invited to provide input into the review of the process and operations of the interim policy to inform future policy implementation. The expression of interest form is available at www. hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au or at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre. For more information, please call the council’s recreation department on 9932 1000.

Con Chirtomatsidis from Spotswood was surprised to discover the large 46cm broad bean Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT in his garden. 109220
Con’s magic bean By NICOLE VALICEK A GREEN-fingered gardener has grown a larger-than-life broad bean that even he was impressed to discover. The broad bean grown by Spotswood man Con Chirtomatsidis, expanded to a whooping 46cm and is still growing. Con said the care given to the vegetable by himself and his wife is responsible for the rapid growth. He obviously knows what he’s doing in the garden and follows a simple process to ensure
the best vegetables. “I fertilise watering very often and then dig around so there are no weeds and then the results come,” he said ‘If you look after the soil, keep it moisturised and fertilised it comes out really well.” It’s not the first time Con has grown an impressive vegetable, four years ago he grew a 72cmlong zucchini and his chillis have reached two metres. Con said he started his garden is Spotswood 10 years ago so his family would have nutritious home grown vegetables
FROM
and fruit. Since then, it has become a much-loved hobby that distracts him from arthritis in his hands and knees. “It doesn’t worry me when I garden I forget everything.” “I love it. I can’t do without gardening. It’s a passion.” He said he looks forward to early December when he will plant nectarines, oranges, grapes and lemons. But it’s yet to be determined if they will reach massive proportions.

TWO HUNDRED years of bridal wear fashion will be revisted when Williamstown plays host to a historic wedding gown exhibition. The exhibition, staged at the Williamstown Town Hall, is part of Frock Up Melbourne, Melbourne’s original vintage fashion event. Organiser Fiona Baverstock said the exhibition will be enough to tickle the taste buds of every prospective bride in Melbourne. Ten years ago stately home Castle Howard decided to divest itself of its world famous costume collection and two grand sales were held at Sotheby’s in London. Almost the entire historic wedding gown collection was purchased by Seams Old of Victoria and brought to Australia and will form the core of the exhibition. The exhibition will also feature an important selection of historic Australian wedding gowns, which tell the stories of home-grown brides from 1870s Queensland through to 1949 Manly. Add to that a wedding gown worn by a Miss Emma Cato in London in 1810, the sad tale of a Scottish bride who never wore her gown, the stylish custommade trousseau of Miss Ida Ittner, the bride with the lucky pocket, and even a 1930s mother-of-the-bride frock. “They can take inspiration from the exhibition, then browse the racks around the vintage fair for a stunning vintage wedding dress,” Ms Baverstock said “Whether you’re planning

Osteopaths, from left, Tim Ischia, Saul Smith and Cliff Butler are participating in Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI Movember. 109200
There’s mo-time like now By NICOLE VALICEK A TRADEMARK moustache on a man’s face can grab your attention. This month Chris Butler wants to grow a ‘mo’ that not only stands out but advocates on behalf of men’s health. The Movember Challenge, which encourages men across the country to grow a moustache for the month of November, aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues, as well much-needed funds towards research into illnesses such as testicular and prostate cancer. Chris, an osteopath who runs the local Williamstown Osteopathy and Pilates, decided to let
his upper lip grow last year following his grandfather’s death from prostate cancer. Chris said the campaign resonates with him and is a great way to bring men’s health issues to the forefront, while raising money for a great cause. “We see a lot of undiagnosed mental issues with men. Blokes don’t tend to talk about depression or feelings we come across a fair bit of that during day-today practice,” he said. Chris said men growing a mo brought much needed awareness to men’s health by promoting conversations wherever they go. “The moustache is a bit of an ice-breaker, a clear remind-
er and bit of solidarity among men,” he said. “You can’t hide from having a moustache, it’s something light-hearted and comical and I think men can get into.” Chris said all five of the osteopaths at the clinic are getting behin d the largest men’s health movement in the world as well as a number of local businesses. “It’s a light-hearted way for men to get together and discuss issues in an open forum.” Chris said for every patient the team treats they will donate $1 to the campaign. Kev’s Greatest Gadget Just as we have the dazzling displays of Kit Kats, Flakes and Freddo Frogs to tempt us at the supermarket checkout, I always find it hard to resist the itty bitty little gadgets you find on display next to the cash register at most homewares stores. You know the ones I mean – teeny little silver turkey thermometers, micro-sized cheese graters … fridge magnets shaped like chickens with built-in tape measures.
garlic,” she replied, plucking one out of the display and holding it up for inspection. “See? You put your garlic cloves inside, and then give it a roll.” To demonstrate, she then rolled the squishy little yellow cone under her palm on the counter. Personally, I thought the whole idea was a load of codswallop, but Kevin was already sold. Seconds later, so was the yellow garlic cone (I thought the hot pink one looked nicer.)
Well, the other week Kevin and I stumbled on a beauty. At least, Kevin did. We’d just popped into the Chef’s Hat in South Melbourne to buy some new frypans when Kevin suddenly became mesmerized by some colourful little silicone cones on display at the checkout. “What do these do?” he asked the lady behind the counter. “They peel
Anyway, the following week Kevin got his first opportunity to put his new gadget to use. Every Monday night at our house, we have Kev’s Cook Up, featuring his famous ‘Monday Mushies’ – three different types of mushrooms sautéed in lashings of garlic and wine. Kevin took three unpeeled garlic cloves, sliced off the woody ends, and eagerly stuffed them into his cone. Then he rolled it on the bench, tipped out the cloves … and voila! They were all perfectly peeled. He did three more … and three more perfectly peeled cloves came out. He was beside himself with excitement and very quick to say to me “I told you so.”
I must say I was fascinated when a workmate (and fellow foodie) told me about the pizza base he’d recently made, requiring just two ingredients – yoghurt and flour! Great if you don’t want to muck around with yeast, or don’t have the time or patience to wait for dough to prove. This recipe from KidSpot Kitchen will make one pizza: In a bowl, combine one cup of self raising flour with one cup of Greek or natural yoghurt and bring together to form a ball. Turn out onto a floured board, then knead and roll. Knead for five to eight minutes, before rolling out. Sport Aces high for opener By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Melbourne Aces will be pretty keen to bounce back in strong fashion during their Australian Baseball League home opener against Adelaide this weekend. The Altona-based Aces have started the new season 1-3 after a tough opening road series against the reigning champion Canberra Cavalry. However Aces manager Phil Dale believes his side remained “solid” against one of the ABL’s better teams. “Canberra is a very good team because they’ve got a lot of imports from the US and more than any other team,” Dale explained. “We had three very close games that could’ve gone either way, but unfortunately we only picked up one of them. “But as far as our club goes we performed well with a much different lineup than we had last year, so I’m looking for good things as the season goes along.” The Aces will play their first home game of the season at Altona’s Melbourne Ballpark this Friday night against the Bite before hosting two more games on Saturday and Sunday.
Dale told Star he’ll be looking for an improved effort from his relief pitchers this time around after they struggled to close games out against Canberra. “We’re going to go hard at it and it’s our first home series,” Dale said. “So we want to start off strong at home and make up for the first series on the road.” With US imports Justin Trapp, Jared Schlehuber, Ryan Casteel and Tyler Massey all on board alongside homegrown stars Brad Harmon, Justin Huber and Josh Davies, Dale is confident he has enough weapons at his disposal to get his Aces back into the playoffs later this summer. “We’ve got a lot more offence throughout one through nine, so we’re very good there,” Dale explained. “We’ve also got a lot of pitching, so it’s just a matter of staying healthy and if we do, I’m very confident with the look of our line-up. “Obviously you’ll want to win as many games as you can and hopefully that’ll land us in the playoffs, which is our goal, and I think on paper we’re definitely up there with the best teams in the league.”

Haberfield has a field day and an edge By LIAM TWOMEY A BRILLIANT bowling performance from Jake Haberfield lifted Footscray Edgewater to a nail-biting 14-run win against Prahran on Saturday. After setting the True Blues 309 for victory on day one, Footscray found itself on the back foot as Prahran recovered from an early stumble. From 1/0, the batting side moved along to 1/102 as Adam Bull and Steve De Bolfo combined for the triple digit partnership. The re-introduction of Haberfield into the attack brought about the demise of the latter, as De Bolfo was bowled for 32 and Jack Taylor soon followed for a duck. Bull remained at the crease despite the double strike and combined with James Miller for a 135-run partnership. Seemingly cruising at 4/241, the Footscray bowlers hit back. Haberfield again secured back-to-back wickets and this time he was joined by Travis Dean who also made a double strike. Dean removed Bull for 163 and True Blues captain Sam Coates for 11 to leave the chase in tatters. The remaining wickets also fell in quick succession as Footscray ended the Prahran innings at 294 in the 89th over. Haberfield finished the match with the dominant figures of 7/82 from 27 overs. Since joining Footscray in the off-season, the opening bowler has taken 19 wickets, the most of any Premier Cricket bowler. He was well supported by Dean, who finished with figures of 2/23 while Hamish Winter-Irving took one wicket. The result sees Footscray move into outright second place on the Premier Cricket ladder with a 5-1 win/loss record for the season. The Bulldogs are just three points behind top of the table Carlton. When round seven of the season continues this weekend, Footscray will take on 15th placed Frankston in a two-day fixture.

HOPPERS Crossing failed to give much of a yelp in its ultimately doomed pursuit of Yarraville Club’s 6/383 in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior Division on Saturday. Starting their chase from scratch on Saturday at Yarraville Club’s Walker Oval, the Cats’ already formidable task was rendered almost impossible after two early wickets fell before they could even hit double digits in the runs column. Emmett Bronca removed Chris Henry for a duck and Sanka Abeyruwan for two before claiming Michael Tubb (14) to leave Hoppers Crossing stranded at 3/31. The visitors’ plight was made even more arduous when skipper Darrel Brown (15) became Bronca’s fourth victim a short time later. When Matthew Murphy joined the party in removing Cameron Nicol for eight and William Gardiner for three, the game looked to be over. A strong middle order resistence led by Asif Jan (56) and Luke Goegan (46) added some respect to the Cats’ chase, but it wasn’t nearly enough in the end as Hoppers Crossing was bowled out for 181 in the 70th over. GRAND United was the only Williamstown and District Cricket Association A Turf home team to score a win in round five of the competition on Saturday. United’s bowling attack proved to be far too good for Melton Centrals in their one-day clash at Parsons Reserve, successfully defending its 9/156. Luke Fox was the star claiming five wickets as Centrals capitulated to be bowled out for just 51 after 22 overs. In other one-day results on Saturday, Bellbridge was victorious over West Newport after reaching its target of 172 with two overs to spare and one wicket in hand. Scott Walker top-scored with 47. Meanwhile the Williamstown Colts were too good for Williamstown Congs, getting to their target of 127 in the 34th over. Gellibrand was also able to snare victory on the road, defeating Melton South Primary School by exactly 100 runs on Saturday. WILLIAMSTOWN has signed former Collingwood rookie listed player Ben Richmond for the 2014 season. Richmond was on the Magpies’ list for a year and played in 16 VFL games for the club. His rise to the ranks of the AFL took a different path to many of his teammates with Richmond an elite basketball player through his junior sporting career. While training at the Australian Institute of Sport he was offered a contract by Collingwood and decided to turn his hand to AFL. Richmond started off playing forward for the Magpies before moving down back in the second half of the season. Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon said his club saw Richmond as an exciting development prospect. “We received strong endorsements about Ben from a few people at Collingwood and were really impressed when we sat down with him by his attitude and desire to improve,” Dixon said. “He got a taste of AFL last year and it’s great he wants to continue down the football path. He performed some really good defensive jobs last year in the second half of the year and actually played one of his better games against us in Round 16. We see him as a player who is going to keep developing and will hopefully get another chance in the AFL system in future years.” Richmond’s signing adds to Williamstown’s developing key position players with David Fahey and Sean Tighe having already been added, along with Sam Critchley, Simon Deery and Ben Casley all re-committing for season 2014.

Greiser’s eye on draft By ADEM SARICAOGLU JAKE Greiser admits he was pretty chuffed after learning he led the TAC Cup in contested possession and clearances this season. The 18-year-old Keilor junior was a standout through 17 games for the Western Jets in 2013, establishing himself as one of the TAC Cup’s leading inside midfielders with an ability to win his fair share of the pill. “Obviously I didn’t come into the season hoping to win those stats, but I was pretty stoked with that result,” a sheepish Greiser told Star. “Most weeks I got pretty high numbers in contested ball and clearances, so having found out I did win that was pretty good to hear.” At 88kg, Greiser was already a ready-made and natural footballer in the trenches coming into his final year of under-18 footy. However, in the hope of hearing his name called by an AFL club come

year’s end, Greiser sat down with Jets coach Torin Baker and decided to put an emphasis on improving his outside game. “We spoke about what I needed to do this year for the team and for myself, and I guess that contested side of my game was already my strength,” Greiser said. “So it was the uncontested stuff with the uncontested marks, handball receives and spread from contests that was a focus each week. “Last year I wasn’t getting much uncontested ball - and this year I definitely did have good numbers in contested possessions but in uncontested possession, I guess I improved in most weeks.” That steady rate of improvement led to Greiser having his most consistent year to date, for which he was rewarded mid-season by gaining selection for Vic Metro in the national under-18 championships. “This year I thought was a really consistent year for myself,” Greiser said. “Having to play in the midfield each week at the Jets you have to play well - and overall I had a couple of good games. “I was pretty stoked to play Metro but having that hamstring injury, I couldn’t play that last game against Vic Country, so that was a bit disappointing. “But against South Australia I played pretty well with the contested ball and clearances and I did my job, so overall I’m pretty happy with the season.”
Jake Greiser kicks clear against Dandenong earlier this year. 97935 Greiser recovered from that hamstring and returned to the Jets, leading them to the finals before gaining an invitation to the state draft combine in early October, where he ran a personal
best eight seconds flat in the agility test. Now all that remains for Greiser is the dreaded waiting game that is the AFL draft period. “It’s definitely a nerve-racking time

By LIAM TWOMEY ALTONA has appointed Gary Turner and Josh Russo as co-coaches for the 2014 Western Region Football League season. Turner joins the Vikings from WRFL Division Two club Caroline Springs, where he held the top job for three years. He will team with Russo who was Altona’s captain in 2013. Altona football director Aaron Freeland was rapt to announce the appointment last Sunday. “Gary has coached for about 20-odd years through under18s, reserves and senior grade footy,” Freeland said. “He has been involved in premierships with Parkside and most recently he was the senior coach at Caroline Springs. He oversaw their first three years as a footy club and to take on that sort of role shows courage and commitment to building something from the ground up. “We have a lot of respect for him and he is obviously really keen to mentor Josh as a future coach.” The pair replaces Anthony Eames who stepped down from the top job at the end of the season. After winning the 2012 Division One premiership, the Vikings’ 2013 campaign came to a close in the semi-finals against Sunshine. Freeland said Russo’s knowledge of the playing group

Altona will begin its preseason training on Wednesday 20 November. “Josh will certainly help with that transition,” Freeland said. “He has the full respect of the playing group being our captain. I think it will help Gary out with what he wants to bring to the table. Josh knows what works and what doesn’t work in our game plan. He and Gary can work out strategies together and focus on certain areas

which will be great.” With the senior coach now in place, Freeland said he would be meeting and signing up the current playing list, before looking to recruit any external players. “My focus is signing up all the player contracts at the moment,” he said. “I’ve meet with half the list so far and I will finish the other half this week. At this stage about 95 per cent of everyone I have spoken to has signed, which is great.”
THIS Sunday, Vinnie Turcinovich - a wellknown sports identity - will be competing in his 15th half-marathon in Shepparton. Vinnie is a member of the Western Suburbs Triathlon Club and is very well known in footy circles having been a player for the Bulldogs under19s , Werribee and Williamstown and most recently for his junior coaching at Altona Vikings where he was nominated for the ACFA Award. He will be cheered on by his wife Jenny and their three children - Matthew, Ebony and Darcy. Good on you Vinnie and all the best in your role with Avondale Heights in the EDFL next year as reserves coach.
GOOD to see Ian Denny has not been lost to local footy and has landed the job as senior coach of the Point Cook Football Club who play in the VAFA competition. Daniel Fraser was the club’s inaugural coach and from what I saw, did a great job creating a club that has a good set of values to take it into the future. Ian is a very good coach and the last few years he has done an excellent job with the St Albans Football Club. Coaching at local level has become far more demanding time-wise, and while the rewards have increased I still think there is an element of giving back to the game that far outweighs most pay cheques, and hopefully that will always be the way it is. A well known football figure said to me recently there are two types of people involved in football those that are overpaid and those that are underpaid. He is so correct.

THIS week everyone in the West should have been heading to the Werribee Racing Club for the running of the premier racing event the Werribee Cup, but last Wednesday it was moved to Ballarat because the track is not fit for racing. Why were punters and members kept in the dark and only given seven-days notice of the change. You can read my thoughts on this on my website - howdypartnersmedia.com.au - I am sick to death of the shabby way sport in the West is treated. There is no doubt we have no clout because of the politics of the area and I don’t see that changing for a long time. I don’t know about you but I am sick of being treated like the poor cousin.

Festive spirit of bank comes alive LAVERTON Altona Meadows Community Bank Branch is set to once again sponsor the Laverton Festival, to be held on Sunday 24 November at the Aviation Road shopping precinct. The Community Bank branch is this year sponsoring children’s activities, including face painting, plaster painting, sand art and a visit by Piggy. Community Bank chairman, Henry Da Silva said the festival was an important event on the community calendar. “The Laverton Festival is a great chance for people in our community to come together and enjoy a free family event,’’ Mr Da Silva said. “We want to sponsor this event as a way of saying thank you to the community for its support of our locally-owned and operated branch. “Since opening our doors in 2000, our customers have helped us to return more than $2.7 million to support important community groups and projects, a truly fantastic achievement.” Community Bank branches are also operated at Altona and Point Cook, with the community company supporting a number of local initiatives, including the Laverton Youth Foundation. Laverton Altona Meadows Community Bank Branch manager Ashley Coles said the branch had contributed more than $150,000 to the establishment of the foundation, which supports leadership development, community projects
The Barking Dogs will be at the Laverton Festival. and programs for local young people. “The Youth Foundation is an inspiring program that aims to develop the leadership skills of young people aged 12 to 25 to generate positive social change and be active citizens in our local community,’’ Mr Coles said. “Our aim is to help create a vibrant
community, generate support for community business and foster strong and long lasting partnerships, all of which help to grow our own business and promote a highly effective local economy. “Just by choosing to bank locally, you are helping to support your local community and invest in its future growth.”

Cruzin’ into festival with knights of chrome VINTAGE Cars are Cruzin into Laverton Festival this year. Cruzin Knights was founded back in 2000 with a group of mates sharing the same interest, cars. After 10 years of talking about putting a club together, in early 2011 the group decided that it was time. Many meetings and discussions took place about what they would like if they started a car club. The one thing the group all agreed on was that it had to be a family orientated car club. In January 2012, the friends held their first club meeting as a car club. From 11 founders at this first meeting, Cruzin Knights had over 50 people show up to sign up 10 months. Today, the group has many more members to add to their club. The club’s latest show generated in excess of $31,000, that is to be donated in full to the Cancer Council. Members would like to say a very special thank you for those members who assisted throughout the day. Cruzin Knights will be present at the Laverton Festival this year with a display of cars. For more information, visit www.cruzinknightscc.com or via Facebook.
Cruzin Knights will show off their classic cars at the Laverton Festival.

The company is focused on providing high-quality service and customer satisfaction in all areas of African dance, drumming and other cultural activities. The variety of entertainment on offer includes African dance and drumming workshops for kids and adults. The dance troop specialises in performances at schools, festivals, weddings, kindergartens, fetes, concerts, birthday parties and school holiday programs. The philosophy behind African Star is to teach people of all ages about African culture and traditions.
Everybody has a star inside of them and when the team at African Star perform they draw out the light and allow viewers to shine it at any event, creating a memorable experience for everyone. Among the most talented in the industry is group founder Shabba Eshun. Shabba is a professional dancer from Ghana. His styles include traditional, contemporary, Comedy, Acrobatic, RnB and hip hop. He was a member of Asanti Dance Theatre in Ghana West Africa for five years. He was also an instructor to students touring Ghana from the Deakin University Global Experi-
ence program and the Australian group ‘Wild-Moves’. Shabba has taught workshops to a variety of people from different cultures, backgrounds, age groups and disabilities. Through African Footprint International, Shabba had the opportunity to learn sign language, which enabled him to teach and perform with hearing-impaired students. In 2010, he launched his very own company African Star Dance and Drumming where he continues performing and teaching dance. African Star Dance faciliates workshops to school children and community groups around Victoria.
In 2009, the Australian Government presented Shabba with a 5 Star Community Coach Award for his extensive work in after-school care programs. African Star Dance conducts community workshops in Footscray, Frankston, Geelong and Werribee. His performances include Suzuki Night markets, Sydney Road Festival, Darebin Music Feast, Woodford Folk Festival, Rainbow Serpent, Viva Festival and Moomba. Shabba’s future plans are to further his international career throughout Australia and all over the world.
