Kitted up for challenge Climbing the Eureka Tower in a fireman’s ‘full kit’ is no small feat, but Chiltern Fire Brigade lieutenant Shannon Beacom is having a crack at the Eureka Climb this weekend. FULL STORY PAGE 2
Babies loved By KRYSTEN MANUEL AFTER the uproar that came with news of the Mercy Health Service Parent and Baby Unit closure, the opening of the Parents and Babies Service House at Wodonga Hospital has been welcomed with open arms. And thanks to a generous group of local Dulux Accredited Painters, the house has just received a new lick of paint. The team of local Dulux Accredited Painters donated two days worth of manpower to refresh the facility, with paint and accessories donated by the Inspirations Paint store in Albury. “There’s always lots of good causes out there, but everyone can associate and recognise the role that services like the parents and babies unit provide to the community,” Dulux Accredited Program national account manager Craig Blinco said. “It’s nice to give something back and so many organisations have quite a lot of support going around, but this is something that doesn’t have that large-scale support so it’s nice to actually choose one of the little guys.” Participating over the last two days were Brushworks Painting, B&A Eales Painting and Decorating, Chris Seymour Painting, War-Dee’s Painting; John Stokes Painting Contractor Pty Ltd, and Farben Painting and Decorating. Third-time mum Brooke Beggs could be an upcoming guest at the new facility, and has gratefully utilised the Mercy Parent and Baby Unit with her first two children. Ms Beggs arrived with her first daughter “frazzled and in need of help,” with daughter Darcy suffering from feeding and attachment issues. “It was definitely nice to go over and have a rest as well as meet a few of the other mums that I still know to this day. “It was a very quiet environment.
They put Darcy and (four years later) Albie into their own rooms and gave me a rest in another room. We watched the clock to help them self settle on intervals. “They taught me how to wrap them properly and self-settle which has actually helped a lot with this one, it’s all coming back to me.” Ms Beggs gave birth to her third child, Lotti, on Monday. The next couple of months will determine if Ms Beggs will utilise the new facility with Lotti. Wodonga Hospital deputy director of nursing and maternity services Julie Wright said the new facility was now more of a one-stop-shop thanks to its relocation. “The Mercy Health Service Parent and Baby Unit ran for 30 years and as The Mercy’s core business was centred around palliative and aged care, they felt it was better to align the parents and baby service with Albury Wodonga Health, which runs all the other maternity services,” she said. “It’s hugely important to the community and I think that became more evident when there was some concern that the Parents and Baby Unit at The Mercy would close. That was never going to be the issue but I think there was genuine concern that came about because the community were a bit unsure of what might happen.” The current facility offers help for a myriad of problems and is organised by midwide and lactation consultant Ros Taig and maternal and child health nurse Carla McDonald. “The learning curve of a new mother is huge,” Ms Taig said. “I think it’s probably one of the biggest adjustments you have to make in your life and you don’t actually realise that until you’re there. Sometimes it doesn’t all come together smoothly and that’s where we can help.”
