Kitted up for challenge Climbing the Eureka Tower in a fireman’s ‘full kit’ is no small feat, but Chiltern Fire Brigade lieutenant Shannon Beacom is having a crack at the Eureka Climb this weekend. FULL STORY PAGE 2
Babies loved By KRYSTEN MANUEL AFTER the uproar that came with news of the Mercy Health Service Parent and Baby Unit closure, the opening of the Parents and Babies Service House at Wodonga Hospital has been welcomed with open arms. And thanks to a generous group of local Dulux Accredited Painters, the house has just received a new lick of paint. The team of local Dulux Accredited Painters donated two days worth of manpower to refresh the facility, with paint and accessories donated by the Inspirations Paint store in Albury. “There’s always lots of good causes out there, but everyone can associate and recognise the role that services like the parents and babies unit provide to the community,” Dulux Accredited Program national account manager Craig Blinco said. “It’s nice to give something back and so many organisations have quite a lot of support going around, but this is something that doesn’t have that large-scale support so it’s nice to actually choose one of the little guys.” Participating over the last two days were Brushworks Painting, B&A Eales Painting and Decorating, Chris Seymour Painting, War-Dee’s Painting; John Stokes Painting Contractor Pty Ltd, and Farben Painting and Decorating. Third-time mum Brooke Beggs could be an upcoming guest at the new facility, and has gratefully utilised the Mercy Parent and Baby Unit with her first two children. Ms Beggs arrived with her first daughter “frazzled and in need of help,” with daughter Darcy suffering from feeding and attachment issues. “It was definitely nice to go over and have a rest as well as meet a few of the other mums that I still know to this day. “It was a very quiet environment.
They put Darcy and (four years later) Albie into their own rooms and gave me a rest in another room. We watched the clock to help them self settle on intervals. “They taught me how to wrap them properly and self-settle which has actually helped a lot with this one, it’s all coming back to me.” Ms Beggs gave birth to her third child, Lotti, on Monday. The next couple of months will determine if Ms Beggs will utilise the new facility with Lotti. Wodonga Hospital deputy director of nursing and maternity services Julie Wright said the new facility was now more of a one-stop-shop thanks to its relocation. “The Mercy Health Service Parent and Baby Unit ran for 30 years and as The Mercy’s core business was centred around palliative and aged care, they felt it was better to align the parents and baby service with Albury Wodonga Health, which runs all the other maternity services,” she said. “It’s hugely important to the community and I think that became more evident when there was some concern that the Parents and Baby Unit at The Mercy would close. That was never going to be the issue but I think there was genuine concern that came about because the community were a bit unsure of what might happen.” The current facility offers help for a myriad of problems and is organised by midwide and lactation consultant Ros Taig and maternal and child health nurse Carla McDonald. “The learning curve of a new mother is huge,” Ms Taig said. “I think it’s probably one of the biggest adjustments you have to make in your life and you don’t actually realise that until you’re there. Sometimes it doesn’t all come together smoothly and that’s where we can help.”
Brooke Beggs and her newborn daughter Lotti. Inset: Brian Eales, John Stokes, John Ward, Brad Emblin, Paul Hossack, Louis Cecile, Craig Blinco and Chris Seymour have generously donated their time and efforts to this worthy project.

Racing to the top
“
THE race to the top of Melbourne’s tallest building is on again, with participants from all over Australia including 23-year-old Chiltern Fire Brigade lieutenant Shannon Beacom. This is the first time Mr Beacom has attempted the Eureka Climb and he has entered in the emergency full kit category, gaining some stair training by climbing up and down logs at his landlord’s property. Mr Beacom has raised $565 so far and is keen to earn the ultimate view from the top of the Eureka Tower this Sunday. “I am really looking forward to the day and expect it not to be anything like I have been trying to prepare myself for, he said. “It is all about setting myself a new challenge, to finish the race and raise as much money as possable in the process. One of the highest vertical races in the world, the annual Eureka Climb, presented by OsteoEze, challenges participants with 88 levels and 300m of vertical elevation and is part of the global World Cup tower running series of races. The Eureka Climb will involve participants walking, running or

Needle therapy for ladies By KRYSTEN MANUEL THESE days, when we’re strung out, stressed out and ‘just over it,’ culture encourages us to reach out for a Xanax or some kind of chemical answer. But the older generation had their own ‘chill pill.’ For 93-year-old Holly Costin and many of her peers, knitting dolls and golliwogs was the answer. “My husband and I used to buy old houses and do them up, I love decorating and filling them with beautiful things,” she said. “We wanted to put an extra room on this house and the council started pulling things down and it was such a mess – and I cannot stand a mess! So I
started to knit big dolls for the church. I think it kept my sanity.” But the real test of Holly’s sanity came when the tornado in March this year tore through Mulwala. With her house in Rutherglen, the last part of the tornado clipped the side of Holly’s house, causing substantial damage and the mother of all messes. With her nerves going into overdrive, Holly whipped out the knitting needles and knitted her way back to sanity – making 40 golliwogs in the process. “When I came here I’d never heard of knitted golliwogs, but I was asked to make one and actually sold 40 of them,” she said. Holly now lives in Borella House
with several other talented ladies, including 88-year-old Evelyn Grigsby, whose knitting sets a high bar in competition and is constantly admired by her peers. “She’s a very clever lady,” Evelyn’s daughter in law, Margaret Grigsby said. “She had eight children and they all had their dolls dressed and everything. But now she can’t do it, that’s what frustrates her – with her eyes she just can’t see.” Sadly, with macular degeneration taking its toll, Evelyn has had to give up the passion she began at just five years old, though her previous work will still be shown at the 26th annual Doll, Bear and Hobby Show this month.
The Doll, Bear and Hobby Show is an event started by Margaret that attracts entries from far and wide, and all not for profit, going straight back into the community. “I started it 26 years ago with a group of ladies in the Quota Club,” she said. “I did it with them for 17 years, then we decided it had run its race so a doll teacher from Wodonga, Denise Hayman took it on with Cooinda and they’ve done it for the handicap services since. Last year Aspire took over and this year I was contacted by one of the teddy bear makers to take it back up. “This year it’s a group of eight ladies plus volunteers. We had to get
insurance as well, so it’s been quite a battle. “We just want to have a nice show and put the money back into the community.” Margaret said when she started the show in 1987, doll making was the second-biggest hobby in the world next to stamp collecting. The Doll, Bear and Hobby Show will be held on 30 November and 1 December at the Mirambeena Community Centre from 10am-4pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children and free for children under three. For more information, call Margaret on 0402 097 565, Chris on 0428 545 329 or Sue on 02 6021 4203.
Evelyn Grigsby, Margaret Grigsby, Joy Fellows and Holly Costin will be entering in the many categories of the Doll, Bear and Hobby Show this year.

Logical dollars By KRYSTEN MANUEL WITH the Logic Foodshare Family Open Day looming, organisers are still looking for more entries in what is rumoured to be one of the biggest fund-raising events of the year. “The fun run support has been excellent so far but we would love to see some more activity with the bike ride,” Logic Foodshare Family Open Day co-ordinator Geoff Haberecht said. “We’re hoping to attract at least 5000 people to the overall event, but we could attract up to 10,000.” Mr Haberecht says the day will primarily benefit Foodshare, but the bike ride is an initiative of Legacy. “It’s all about Foodshare and Legacy have come in with their annual bike ride,” he said. “Foodshare is sponsored through Wodonga TAFE who are the operators of the Deca Training Centre. When we sat down 12 months ago we looked at a fund-raising aspect for the Rotary Club and it was suggested we put at least half the funds towards Foodshare. “It was something very high on our agenda in the first place because of the growing need for
Foodshare in this region. It has become quite an enormous organisation. “It’s become very obvious over the last few years that people within the district need more and more help. What we’re seeing is a growing need, not just in the bottom of the market, but it’s affecting middle income groups as well - it’s a bigger proportion than it ever has been. “Legacy is an institution that has been around for a long time. They’re always in need of funds and their work goes pretty well unheralded. Our Rotary Club has partnered with Legacy to assist with the profile of their bike ride.” The Rotary Club of Albury North (RCAN) in conjunction with Wodonga TAFE and the Driver Education Centre have set the Family Open Day date for November 17. The day includes any and every type of demonstration, showing and activity available. RCAN is assembling a full day of activities to suit all age groups, commencing with a 10km fun run including a lap of the race track and the annual Legacy Bike Ride with 18km and 60km bike rides leaving the logic centre in the morning and returning in time for the festivities.

The program includes contributions from the Albury and District Car Club, Sports Car Club, go-kart demonstrations, Panthers Junior Cycling Club, Albury Wodonga Model Aero Club, trucks, forklift demonstrations, learner driving education demonstrations, with displays from Albury Wodonga Health Services and high end hi-fi audio demonstrations. A full program of music and entertainment is planned to suit all ages, with entertainment commencing at 11am. A forklift competition will also go ahead, though more entries are needed. “It’s designed as a family event to be a feel-good day,” Mr Harberecht said. “On top of a large number of traders, we also have quite a variation of food stalls.” The Logic Foodshare Family Open Day is on November 17 from 10am-4pm at the Wodonga TAFE Logic Campus. Adult $10, under 18s $5, family capped at $20. For more information, visit www.rotaryalburynorth.org.au, or call Geoff Haberecht on 0401 181 854, or Katie Shalevski on 02 6055 6991.

The long climb out By KRYSTEN MANUEL WODONGA’S Huon Hill is playing host to the very first Freedom Climb event in Australia. Freedom Climb is a project of Operation Mobilisation (OM), which has been in action for 55 years, currently working in 118 countries. “The concept of freedom climb is a symbolic gesture that many people in the world can’t climb out of their situations –poverty or enslavement and so on,” Freedom Climb director Kate Rodwell said. “So we use it as a symbol to raise funds, awareness and advocacy for these people so their lives can be changed.” The climb will be at Huon Hill on 16 November with events from 1-5pm. “Huon Hill itself is a really easy climb,” Ms Rodwell said. “There are a few people who can’t do the climb so they’re involved with manning the registration tables and helping out as marshals and so on. Even if you can’t climb you’re very welcome to come, help out and learn more about the issues.” At the top of the climb people will be welcomed, with information on Freedom Climb’s cause as well as authentic products made by people all over the world. “A lot of people don’t realise there’s actually approximately 27 million people enslaved around the world at the moment,” Ms Rodwell said. “The idea is that it’s not only awareness but also sending money back so we can see them growing in their sustainability

Michelle, Lauren and Mark Enright are looking forward to making Freedom Climb a family affair. and their ability to rise above poverty and slavery. “Our projects have three different focuses. Our first focus is rescue and rehabilitation, often this includes advocacy, safe houses, trauma counselling and play therapy. “One of my friends from Cambodia was sold for US$50 – her mother thought she was putting her in services but it was actually a brothel. She’s one of our team leaders in Cambodia now. “Secondly, many people we rescue don’t have any other skills so we have development projects as well. Often that involves teaching them English, computer training, hairdressing, jewellery making, micro enterprise programs, motormechanics.
“The third focus is prevention, so we will often go to communities at risk and focus on building health into the community, but it usually begins with educating the kids. If they have a good education and a belief in themselves and their own ability they’re less likely to be trafficked. “We also have HIV and AIDS projects that work alongside that.” In time, Ms Rodwell hopes to see Freedom Climb events across the country, but for now, people are being urged to be a part of the inaugural Huon Hill Freedom Climb Event. “I met some lovely people in the group and this is my first foray into art,” she said. “I would like to learn more about the mixing of colours. Painting is just a lovely thing to do.” The lessons were adapted for vision impaired students to learn the shape of objects by placing a piece of paper over them and tracing their outlines. “I didn’t even notice there was a plate under the fruit until the end and the background was supposed to be a window with curtains but I couldn’t see that, so it’s just plain blue,” she said. “I worked on it for four weeks trying to fix up the fine details.” Rowena has received a lot of services from Vision Australia, including participating in the Local Client Support Group and assistance with accessing computers.
ROWENA Ginns is a retired kindergarten teacher from Glenroy whose painting has been selected to be a part of the Vision Australia 2014 calendar which showcases artists who are blind or have low vision. Rowena has macular degeneration; the most common cause of vision loss in older Australians. One in seven people over 50 are affected and the incidence increases with age. The condition results in the loss of central vision while peripheral vision remains relatively unaffected, so Rowena can still find her way around familiar areas but she is no longer able to drive and has difficulty reading. Rowena has always enjoyed music and sewing but she has only recently become interested in painting though classes run with the support of Albury City Council.
Local artist Rowena Ginns’ work will feature in the 2014 Vision Australia calendar. “I get a lot out of the Local Client Groups and the other people there are great,” she said. “I have a magnifier on the computer but it’s a bit hard and I don’t want to fiddle around with it too much because my husband uses the computer a lot more than I do. Recently some friends invited me to join LinkedIn
so I’m going to start working on it.” This unique calendar is on sale through Vision Australia by calling 1300 847 466, visiting www.visionaustralia. org/shop or at Vision Australia centres around Australia. All proceeds go towards supporting thousands of children and adults who are blind or have low vision.

Gates heads new goat lobby NEW South Wales goat producer Rick Gates has been elected president of the Goat Industry Council of Australia for the next 12 months. He was elected to the position at the council’s annual general meeting this week in Wodonga and takes over from
Glen Telford the council’s president for the past three years. David Kimmorley from Queensland was elected vice president and Peter Lauterbach from South Australia was re-elected treasurer.
Mr Gates runs Burndoo Station, which incorporates a rangeland goat depot 70km south east of Wilcannia, NSW. He is a long standing NSW Farmers Goat Committee member and previous chair and his enthusiasm for the industry is unrelenting.

As a result of the success of the Boobs, Bikes and Bubbles package organisers were thrilled to donate $1,500 to the McGrath Foundation to fund Breast Care nurses in the region. After lunch, guests are invited to relax and enjoy complimentary tastings at the cellar door before making their own way back to the Victoria Hotel for a pick-me-up coffee. LOVERS of food, wine, cycling and shopping are invited to join Rutherglen’s inaugural Pink Pedal Party, a special one-day event hosted by Rutherglen’s Boobs, Bikes and Bubbles team this Friday. The party celebrates over 300 participants on the Boobs, Bikes and Bubbles package. It recognises the considerable funds that have already been collected through this package and donated to the McGrath Foundation, while raising additional funds for this charity. “Our Pink Pedal Party will provide an opportunity to celebrate two years of great success with our cycling package for women – Boobs, Bikes and Bubbles,” organiser Sarah Pilgrim said. “This long lunch gives local girls the opportunity to experience the benefits of this great girls’ getaway package, as well as a chance for those who have enjoyed the package to come back for more. “Profits raised from this Pink Pedal Party will also be donated to the McGrath Foundation, to continue our commitment to this valuable service.” The party invites ladies to dress in their best pink cycling outfit and spend a day sampling the best parts of the Boobs, Bikes and Bubbles package. The day starts at 10.30am at Passion Flora Gifts and Homewares with a glass or two of Cofield Wines sparkling wine, pink-themed canapés and the opportunity for a little retail therapy.

Funding revival A COMMUNITY group that provides a well-being service is among the recipients of Wodonga Council’s latest round of Financial Assistance for Community Groups grants. The grants were presented at the council chambers last Wednesday by Wodonga Mayor Cr Mark Byatt. This year, nine applications were supported by the assessment panel with the total funding amount reaching $10,971. Among those to receive a financial shot in the arm is Revive, a new not-for-profit community outreach well-being service from St John’s Anglican Church Wodonga, for all in need in our community. Revive provides health and well-
being services and is entirely coordinated and staffed by volunteers and qualified professionals with a passion to generously contribute their time for those in need in the community. It will use the money to purchase a phone to send reminders about appointments, as well as trolleys to assist in the delivery of its service. Among those to receive grants this year are Border District Show Jumping Club, Albury-Wodonga Yacht Club, Rotary Club of West Wodonga, Albury-Wodonga Turner Syndrome Support Group, Wodonga Toy Library and St John Wodonga division, Wodonga Tennis Centre Croquet and Baranduda Scouts.

Too fat, and too much smoking NEW statistics out today on smoking and obesity rates show some worrying trends for people in the Hume Medicare Local (HML) area and highlight the need for further research. The National Health Performance Authority (NHPA) publications reveal both overweight and obesity rates, and tobacco smoking rates for each Medicare Local area in Australia by using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Australian Health Survey. To compare the Medicare Locals more fairly, each Medicare Local area is placed in a group based on remoteness and socio-economic status. Hume Medicare Local CEO David Dart says the data reveals that the estimated smoking rate in the HML area is 22 per cent, placing it three per cent above the average of its group.
New statistics have revealed dangerous figures for smoking and obesity in the Hume region. “The rates in the Hume area are just six per cent below the highest rates recorded in the country - this shows the message still isn’t getting through to many local people,” he said. The data also shows that the
obesity rate in the HML area is 30 per cent, which is slightly below the average of its group but still a major concern. “While the statistics show the obesity rate for the general HML population is 30 per cent, there are groups of people where this proportion is much larger,” Mr Dart said. “The results demonstrate the importance of a locally tailored approach to preventative health and primary health care, however there are some gaps in the data with no rate of overweight people available for the HML area.” The missing statistic is one of a number that will be filled through the development of the HML comprehensive needs analysis, which aims to identify service gaps in the region through extensive local research and data collation.

Wodonga’s new spa & salon DO you have an extra special event coming up? Are you a bridesmaid trying to organise the perfect hens day? A doting best friend organising a birthday surprise? Or perhaps you just want to get a group together for an afternoon of luxury and indulgence! Well look no further – Beaute Spa & Salon is now taking bookings for it’s grand opening next Tuesday, and booking now will get you 20 per cent off any and every treatment! Situated in central Wodonga, Beaute Spa & Salon welcomes you to an elegant but cosy atmosphere taking the very best of vintage French style and specialising in group and couple bookings, as well as customised face and body treatments to suit your unique needs. “I saw a niche in the Wodonga market for more of the spa treatments so that’s why I thought ‘instead of going all the way to Beechworth or over to Albury, why not have it here’?” Beaute Spa & Salon owner and operator Tace Morris said.
“My vision is to really focus on the spa treatments – the body wraps, the massages, facials, as well as catering to spa parties, bridal parties, double treatments and things like that.” Imagine spending a few hours with the girls in a stunning environment, receiving superb treatments, relaxing with a glass of bubbly and catching up on all the goss – how divine! Tace has been studying beauty therapy since high school and spent a great deal of time preparing the business to give it the best start possible. Having nally found the perfect venue, thoroughly researched make-up and skin products, as well as completed her certicate four in business management, Tace believes she has found the perfect recipe to give the people of Albury Wodonga what they need. “At Beaute Spa & Salon, the whole theme is vintage French,” she said. “I thought it would give it a really nice feel instead of walking into a salon that’s bright white and modern, I wanted it
to feel like home. It’s a comfortable environment, very warm but still very classy. “I’m using Skincare ASAP which is a beautiful range. I wanted to go for products that actually worked where you can see results. “For make-up I’m using Inika which is 100 per cent organic, vegan tested and Australian, and that’s what everyone is looking for these days – mineral make-up that won’t damage your skin. “I’ve also planned to have specials every three months.” Laser hair removal is also on offer and performed by Kerry Khann from Karmicvibe, while microdermabrasion and skin peels by Tace also feature on Beaute Spa & Salon’s extensive spa menu. “Microdermabrasion and skin peels are the two things I’m most passionate about because they give the best results, especially for people with problem skin,” she said. “Microdermabrasion is basically an extreme exfoliation. It’s done using a machine with a hand-held piece that moves over your skin and removes all
the dead skin off your face. “Usually when I do it on someone for the rst time I do it on one side of their face to begin with so they can actually see and feel the immediate difference. After three days they’ll be saying ‘my skin feels amazing!’ “The skin peels give excep-
tional results as well. They’re great for people with acne problems, congestion, pigmentation, wrinkles, everything really.” Beaute Spa & Salon will open on Tuesday 19 November at 47 Stanley Street, Wodonga. Make your booking now by calling 02 6056 6676.

The Millinery Award went to Bec Duryea with her pink and white headpiece made by Albury milliner Morell Cannon. On the track, race one was taken out by Atlanta Rock, race two by Cresta Condor. ROADSHOW
Lost art of Tommy McRae AN EXHIBITION of sketches from the ’lost’ book of artworks by indigenous artist Tommy McRae will be featuring in Wahgunyah as part of the town’s Heritage Weekend this week. Tommy McRae spent much of his adult life in Wahgunyah. It was there, in the early 1880s, that the Wahgunyah telegraph master Roderick Kilborn assisted Tommy to develop his talent through providing him pen, ink and paper. Tommy McRae was commissioned in the 1880s to create a sketchbook of artworks, The Lucas Sketchbook, which has recently been found in an English attic among items from a deceased estate. The sketchbook was recently acquired by the National Library of Australia. Art historian Hilary Jankelson will be a guest speaker for the weekend, discussing the drawings and telling the story of the sketchbook and its journey to Australia. The sketches will be a highlight of Wahgunyah’s Heritage Weekend on 16 and 17 November. The new Wahgunyah riverside walking trail, the Tommy McRae Track, will be officially opened over the weekend. There will also be a host of other activities paying tribute to Tommy McRae, including

Duck Inn to this one By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S the excited chatter of smitten guests that has people making tracks through the stunning Victorian High Country‌ The historic and iconic Blue Duck Inn Hotel is not the sort of place you just happen to ‘come by’. Situated at the confluence of three great trout rivers – the Cobungra, Bundarra and Mitta Mitta, its location, Anglers Rest, is a dead give-away to the peace and serenity you can expect from this enchanting little pub. Word of not only the amazing location, but high quality, home-made food and charming cabins has travelled the world, attracting families, honeymooners, motorcycle enthusiasts, bush walkers, white water rafters, horse riders, bird watchers, fisherman and cyclists alike. “It’s a very unique environment – we don’t have mains power, we don’t have mobile phone reception, running as we did 100 years ago on a generator,â€? owner, Lana Antony said. “We still run the hotel as it was run 100 years ago.â€? The original 1900 building was a slab construction cut

from local timber, which operated as a butcher’s shop offering fresh meat to miners. Billy O’Connell, a successful miner, bought the building and obtained a hotel licence in 1912, but ended up nailing a panning dish to the front of the hotel and wrote with irony, ‘Blue Duck.’ (If a gold lease produces no gold, it’s known as a blue duck.) In the early ’20s, Billy O’Connell transported two houses from Omeo – room by room – through the bush on horse drays. One is the main building of the Blue Duck, the other was used as a residence on the cabin site. Lana Antony and Michael Mullis bought the Blue Duck in 2008 and fell in love with its to-die-for location and amazing history, much of which is displayed in the building today. “The building has weathered three fires and about four floods, Lana said.
“The first buildings brought out here are still exactly the same buildings. They’ve been joined together now and a bar has been built, but we’ve followed along the lines of keeping it looking original and not making too many changes. In keeping with the theme, the Blue Duck a la carte menu is composed of locally sourced ingredients and food made on site, with the 400-gram prime scotch fillet the main attraction – perfect to follow with crusty garlic bread and home-made bread and butter pudding. Finally, when you come for a meal and can’t tear yourself away from the place, pull up for a night or three in one of the six two-bedroom cabins. All beautifully appointed, it’s your choice as to whether you’re after rustic, raw timber or something with a more modern feel. Visit The Blue Duck Inn, Omeo Highway, Anglers Rest, 03 5159 7220.
This exceptional corner of the world offers a fantastic location, first class food and good old high country hospitality.

Splash into summer
Get your pools in LOCAL Government Minister Don Page today reminded pool owners to register their backyard swimming pools by Tuesday 19 November, or risk a fine. Mr Page said all backyard pools and spas in New South Wales were now required to be registered on the NSW Swimming Pool Register. “The pool safety message is getting through to households, which is vitally important as we enter the swimming season,’’ Mr Page said. “The NSW Swimming Pool Register can be accessed through the website www.swimmingpoolregister. nsw.gov.au and the registration process is quick and free. “If pool owners prefer,
council can help with the registration process for a fee of up to $10. “To register your pool, people need to enter their address, the size of their property, the type of pool they own – such as an inground or spa pool – whether any work has been done to pool barriers, and how old the pool is. “It is important to remember that the register does not close on 19 November - you can still register your pool at any time and newly-built pools can still be registered after the deadline passes.’’ “Failing to have your pool registered can attract a fine – so I would urge everyone to become familiar with the new requirements. “With the weather warming up, please take this op-
portunity to make it safe in time for the swimming season. “The register also includes useful information to allow people to assess their own pool barriers, but this self-assessment isn’t required to finish the registration process. “So do your part to keep kids safe – register your pool, check your barriers and make sure it’s safe.’’ Anyone with difficulties should contact their local council for assistance, phone the swimming pools hotline at 1300 922310 for technical assistance, or email pools@dlg.nsw.gov.au The deadline to register has been extended – to midnight Tuesday 19 November. After that you risk a fine if you have not registered your pool.

A SUMMER of fun awaits the community at the Wodonga Aquatic Venue and Exercise Space (WAVES) with the heated outdoor pools open for the season. WAVES invites the community to come down and cool off at the pool seven days a week, while enjoying a family-friendly atmosphere. WAVES, located at 8 Mactier Avenue will also offer aquatic programs and outdoor activities throughout summer and is home to local sporting associations the Wodonga Swim Club and Wodonga Water Polo
Club who are recruiting for new members. Centre director, Graham Watson, said there would be a range of programs to get kids active in a safe and supervised setting. “The splash pad proved extremely popular for young families and we will look to add activities for older children including the popular pool inflatable throughout the season, he said. “We believe it’s important to provide health and wellness programs to the community. The YMCA and the Wodonga
City Council are focused on providing opportunities for residents to improve their physical and mental health through recreational programs and services. “Over the past few weeks there have been some great improvements with additional permanent shade installed and an additional barbecue to finalise over the coming days. Memberships are available. For more information contact WAVES on (02) 6056 2066 and check opening times at wodonga.ymca.org.au

Vital vitamin D SUNSMART, Osteoporosis Australia and Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria are joining together to raise awareness around the importance of vitamin D for healthy bones and in the prevention of osteoporosis. “Vitamin D is crucial for bone and muscle development and in the prevention of osteoporosis, yet the Victorian Health Monitor Report revealed that over 50 per cent of Victorians are low in vitamin D during winter,” SunSmart manager Jen Makin said. “Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is two and a half times higher in winter (53 per cent) as compared to summer (20 per cent), highlighting the impact of seasonal variability in ultraviolet (UV) radiation on vitamin D levels. “Victorians need to start paying attention to their sun exposure and getting the balance right.” Research last winter showed the majority of Victorians (61 per cent) surveyed hadn’t exposed their arms or legs to the sun that month. “This is worrying as we know that our bodies only store enough vitamin D to last between 30 to 60 days and we also know that over one third of Victorians (37 per cent) don’t realise that they are in danger of not getting enough vitamin D if they regularly cover up their skin with clothing. “It’s important that Victorians with fair to olive skin get approximately two to three hours of mild sun exposure to the face, hands and arms (or equivalent area of skin) spread over the week. That’s about 20 minutes a day. “Sun protection is not required unless near highly reflective surfaces such as snow, outdoors for extended periods or the UV index reaches three and above.” Professor Peter Ebeling, medical director of Osteoporosis Australia and head of endocrinology, University of Melbourne at Western Hospital said that Australians from population groups at risk of low vitamin D, including people with naturally very dark skin and those with little or no
By KRYSTEN MANUEL ONE of the greatest luxuries many Australians enjoy is a refreshing dip in the pool on a hot summer’s day. But with the price of electricity, pool owners are forced to think twice about their energy usage. “A lot of people think ‘the electricity is too much, I just won’t run it for as long,’ but then the pool starts going green and they need to buy products,” Poolside Wodonga manager Kazja Lappin said. Luckily, there is an answer - the Astral Viron P320. “They run at a lot lower revolutions per minute (RPM) than what your standard pumps will,” Ms Lappin said. “Most pumps are around one horsepower, these are slightly less, but because they’re running at a much lower RPM they use a lot less electricity. You may need to run it for a little longer each day, but it will still turn your water over regularly. “They’re a three-speed pump, where most pumps are single-speed. Ninety per cent of the time it will run on a low speed, but when you’re using your automatic cleaner and vacuuming, you would need to bump it up to high.” Ms Lappin said pool owners who purchased an Astral Viron P320 would make their money back on electricity savings within two summers, and with Poolside’s discount from $1495 to $1195, pool owners would be able to enjoy their pools without spending a fortune. “Most people would find their pump currently costs them around $0.36 an hour to run,” Ms Lappin said. “These new pumps will cost around $0.06 an hour to run. “On the Astral website there’s a great conversion tool and using the details off your

Saddle up for a thigh-slappin’ hootenanny at the Kinross this weekend with The Pigs.
Family of pigs By KRYSTEN MANUEL THEY’RE the most energetic, enjoyable family band around and they’re back in Albury to wreak havoc at the Kinross no, not the Von Trapp Family Singers, it’s The Pigs! Amid their The Collossal Hangover tour, front man T-Bone Pig took some time out of the pen for a casual but very entertaining conversation with NewsWeekly about family feuds, the art of mockery and their journey thus far. KM: So you’ve just returned from Europe, how was that experience? TP: We developed a bit of a following over in Europe which is a bit crazy but a lot of fun. This was our second trip and we just played at a few gigs and festivals around Germany. KM: And there were a few blues with the brothers I hear? TP: It’s great that we can sit in separate seats on the plane. Touring is like a holiday but not. We’re forced together all the time and it can be a challenge, but luckily there’s beer. What we can do is drink a lot of fantastic German beer, eat some German sausage and you just get over it. KM: The Pigs have been around for a fair while now - I remember seeing you play at a punch party at my university and thinking ’those guys are going places!’
TP: That was a crazy party! KM: And then you were on Australia’s Got Talent... TP: Yes, we’re not good looking enough for X Factor! But we gained a lot more fans in Australia because of that. KM: The Pigs have been around for a number of years now, do you feel like you’re on track for your vision for the band? TP: Well the band started as a silly idea and we just drank beer and had no expectations. Gradually more people started coming to the gigs and it developed from there. We’ve recorded three albums now which we’re very proud of and we’re starting to make inroads overseas. It is growing but hard to know what we intended in the first place because we didn’t intend much! We just wanted to have fun and we still are. KM: It certainly looks like it from the energy you have on stage. Is that just how you guys have fun? TP: Yes definitely, that and an incredible vitamin and fitness regime. During the week it’s heads down bums up in the fitness department. I have my own personal trainer. It’s like Rocky for pigs. You can tell when you look at us as well, we’re quite cut. KM: So how did you develop your current style?
Box office
TP: We love bluegrass, pop and rock, and we like to mix them together. We have a lot of original material as well. We love the bad behaviour of hillbilly styling so we try to put all of that into music, and often when we hear a song on the radio that could be helped with a bit of banjo we do it. KM: Looking at some of the covers like Single Ladies and Gold Digger, it’s obviously a bit of tongue in cheek as well? TP: Of course. We actually wrote Single Ladies. The message is all the same, that you’ve only got yourself to blame if you don’t do something about an opportunity, that’s the message Beyonce fed and it’s a similar message from us. KM: When you perform that song do you do the dance too? TP: Um... Our drummer cousin Sheamus often does some of the dance, he just can’t help himself. KM: Are you looking forward to coming back to the Kinross? TP: We love the Kinross! It’s fantastic, it’s one of those classic Australian iconic venues. It’s big, it’s open and holds a lot of party people. The Pigs will be at The Kinross Woolshed, Friday 15 November from 9pm. Inquiries: 02 6043 1155

BOUTIQUE - HANDMADE - UNIQUE
A tough tale with a hard edge By KRYSTEN MANUEL MOVIE: The Counsellor DURATION: 111 minutes Starring: Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, , Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz and Dean Norris DIRECTOR: Ridley Scott THIS one is not for the faint of heart. With several heads lopped off in colourful fashions and a somewhat disturbing scene involving Cameron Diaz suctioned to a windscreen – yes it’s what you’re thinking – at least The Counsellor could never be accused
of being boring. It tells the story of a rich, successful lawyer known only as Counsellor (Fassbender) with everything he could want at his fingertips, but of course everything is not enough. The Counsellor’s one time deal involving the Mexican drug cartel goes very wrong and immediately sends him and everyone around him spinning towards a violent and inevitable end. At the cold realisation of what he’s done, the Counsellor sets out to protect the only thing he truly loves, his fiancee Laura (Cruz).
Propped up by an all star cast, each character is specifically designed with their own individual agendas and weaknesses that seem to protrude more-so than those in other films. Counsellor the naive, Laura - the oblivious, Malkina (Diaz) - the cruel but clever, Reiner (Bardem) - the blind and Westray (Pitt) - the all too confident. Throwing them all into a pot and mixing makes for a savage world dealing only in absolutes and resulting in only one winner.

Tips on bidding Before the auction commences, be sure to position yourself where you can see the auctioneer and where they can see and hear you. Make your bids clear by announcing them and raising your hand. During the auction, the auctioneer should announce if the property is “on the market” if the owner’s reserve price has been reached. If the reserve price isn’t reached, the property will be passed in to the highest bidder, or on a vendor bid. If it is passed in, the owner must first negotiate with the highest bidder for the purchase of the property. So if the auctioneer announces that the property is going to be passed in, it is a good strategy at this point to make sure you are the highest bidder to secure this
AUCTION season is in full swing this year with a record number of auctions held last weekend. The REIV offers a few tips for potential buyers on how to bid at auction. Before you attend the auction, ensure that you have a plan including knowing when you intend to commence bidding and at what price point you should stop. On the day of the auction ensure you arrive early and make a final inspection of the property. You can check the contract of sale, vendor’s statement, and auction rules which should all be on display for at least 30 minutes before the auction commences. If you have any questions about the auction rules, ask the agent in attendance.
option to negotiate with the owner. Once the property’s passed in, it is too late. The auctioneer can’t re-open the auction to accommodate a late bid and override this option that someone else has secured ahead of you. While the owner needs to negotiate with the highest bidder, if you are not prepared to meet the owner’s asking price, the owner may end negotiations with you immediately and start negotiating with another interested party. If you are not confident about bidding at auction you should consider using an REIV buyer’s agent, who can be engaged to assist with all aspects of the process, including the bidding. To find out more, visit www.reiv.com.au
Comparison with Valuer-General
VILLAGE LIFE WODONGA
The REIV adopted a seasonally adjusted median price to account for changes that occur periodically within the year. In general, median house prices increase in the December quarters and decrease in the March quarters. This is because there are more sales and more auctions during the December quarter. Conversely, by the March quarter, there are fewer sales and auctions. Prices of homes sold at auction are around 50 per cent higher than others. This is because many auctions are held in the inner city, so house prices are more likely to increase in quarters where there are more auction sales. While the REIV has adopted the seasonally adjusted median price, the original and trend series are also available on our website at www. reiv.com.au
THERE are many different calculations of the median price available to the public. While having more information can be helpful, it can also be confusing. The Valuer-General has released the March quarter 2013 median prices. These showed a 5.4 per cent decrease in Melbourne’s median house price. And yet the REIV recorded a 3.1 per cent increase. So why is there a difference? The answer lies in the methodology. The Valuer-General publishes the raw (original) median price, while the REIV publishes a seasonally adjusted median price. Both are valid calculations and show a different aspect of the market. Other data providers like the Australian Bureau of Statistics provide original, seasonally adjusted, and trend series of their data.

Sea-less sailing By KRYSTEN MANUEL, CONTRARY to popular belief, you don’t need to live by the sea to learn to sail. “We actually have a club here we have Lake Hume which is five times the size of Sydney Harbour but there’s so many people that don’t even realise we have a club, Albury Wodonga Yacht Club (AWYC) rear commodore Leanne Thomson said. “Our club won Victorian Discover Sailing Centre of The Year last year. We actually beat a lot of the bay clubs across Victoria and competed against the likes of Sandringham Yacht Club which is a multi-million dollar facility. “Sailing has something for everyone. So depending on your size, age and ability there’s a type of sailing for you. Last weekend’s AWYC Open Day saw the AWYC welcome people of all ages and abilities to view
club facilities, learn about what sailing is and what being a member means. “The people that came out for the day had the opportunity to come out for a short sail on either our tackers boats - our kids learn to sail program for 7-12 years - or a dinghy which we use for our youth and adult learn to sail programs, Ms Thompson said. “We also had catamarans and also the larger trailable boats, so there was something for everyone to try. Ms Thompson said organisers were pleased with the turnout, with over 100 people visiting the club and more than 75 people registering for a sail. “Starting with our learn to sail program you can progress through to club racing, from club racing through to state, national and even international events, so if you fancy yourself as a future Olympian, this
ALBURY triathlete Jesse Featonby made the most of perfect racing conditions to easily win Sunday’s mini triathlon at Allans Flat. Though just shy of a new course record, Jesse finished the 250 metre swim, 13km bike ride and 3km run in a blistering time of 33 minutes, 45 seconds. Featonby’s closest rival was Michael Hosking who finished in an impressive time of 36.31 in his first ever club triathlon. Hosking was runner-up to Jesse in this year’s Nail Can Hill run and is the current Albury-Wodonga Cycling Club A-Grade champion. Featonby is enjoying one of his best years in triathlon and will race in Melbourne in a fortnight before taking a short break. He says his focus now is on Commonwealth Games selection and the ITU World Cup which begins in Mooloolaba in March 2014. Harry Weatherall finished in third place and was also the first male junior, while fellow junior Kirsty Deacon was the first female home in a time of 39.25. Heidi Pool finished in second place, followed by Sarah Kilner. A total of 60 competitors took part in the event, the first for the Albury Wodonga Triathlon season. The next event is in a fortnight and also includes a women’s only mini triathlon.
Ruby Bonnor and Olivia Richardson. is the place to start! Ms Thompson said. Learn to sail classes start at Lake Hume this weekend, with positions still available.
