THE Southern Downs and Tenterfield have been left stranded as the National Broadband Network is forced to reconsider the service’s rollout. According to the NBN’s own maps, the City of Warwick is an island surrounded by broadband-capable services. Meanwhile the release of any plans for NBN installation in Stanthorpe or Tenterfield is on hold until at least 2 December, when the company will announce the results of a review of the NBN. The incoming Abbott government has told NBN Co to complete a 60-day strategic review of the rollout.
The NBN has been able to complete the installation of two operating facilities in and around Warwick which cover close to 600 premises, one facility in Sladevale and one in Rosenthal Heights. These are wireless systems. The city area of Warwick was due to get a faster optic fibre link to the NBN but this installation will now have to wait upon the government’s Interim Statement of Expectations which instructed the NBN to review and audit the rollout. Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has promised to deliver the NBN “sooner, more affordably for consumers and at less cost to taxpayers”. Continued on page 2 IT’S ALL ABOUT SAVING WATER

Region a black hole in NBN zone From page 1 Labor says this means a less capable system using old copper connections to people’s homes, which compares unfavourably with their planned fibre to the home broadband network. Federal MP Bruce Scott said Labor had overcommitted the NBN. “We’re committed that by 2016 all Australians would have access to 25 megabits per second download at the universal price, whether you live in Brisbane or Warwick or Winton,” Mr Scott said. The Government will shift its NBN building program to the areas of least services, benefitting rural consumers. Mr Scott said many Australians were
switching to wireless communications through phones and tablets and didn’t desire Labor’s fibre to the home model. “People are voting with their feet by opting for more wireless connectivity as their preferred option,” he said. “We’re seeing the migration away from fixed line connectivity to mobility.” A statement from NBN Co to the Southern Free Times said “after we have the outcome of the strategic review we will be able to come back to you with more information” on the rollouts for the rest of Southern Downs and Tenterfield. “In line with the Government’s interim statement of expectations, issued to the company on 24 September 2013, NBN Co is currently undertaking a
strategic review of the rollout of its network,” the statement said. “The review will determine how best to provide access to very fast broadband to all Australians as soon, cost-effectively and affordably as possible. “NBN Co’s maps will be updated when further areas enter the building stage and the shape of the rollout becomes clearer following the completion of the strategic review. “While the review is underway, construction of the network is business as usual.” A spokesman said the review could open up new and different technologies for delivering fast broadband.

Diners come to the rescue THERE are no winners from domestic violence, but there is increased awareness. Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Peter Blundell’s CEO Challenge dinner on Saturday night at the Warwick RSL was attended by about 80 people and contributed to his bid to raise awareness and funds for victims of domestic violence. Cr Blundell said the CEO Challenge was a nation-wide campaign that asks CEOs and community leaders to take action to help prevent domestic violence in families and communities. “In this campaign CEOs, senior business leaders and prominent community leaders compete against each other over a six-month period, from June to November,” Cr Blundell said. They promote awareness of domestic violence and its impact on workplaces and the community, and while doing so raise funds to support local services for women who need housing or other assistance, he said. Cr Blundell said the dinner was a great success and everyone enjoyed entertainer Eric Summons who kept the laughter flowing. “I am pleased that so many local businesses have supported my campaign by donating raffle prizes,” he said. “We had some wonderful accommodation prizes, wine and other giveaways and there were many people at the dinner who came away with a

smile and prize in hand,” Cr Blundell said. He emphasised there was a serious part of the night as all who attended knew that the intent of the CEO Challenge is to raise awareness about domestic violence. “The CEO of the CEO Challenge Wendy Reid spoke about her work and thanked the Southern Downs community for supporting this important initiative,” he said. “Wendy is very involved with workplaces throughout Queensland and provides a comprehensive training program for businesses so that employers can provide support to employees who are dealing with domestic violence in their lives. “The funds raised from my campaign will go to local support services for families experiencing domestic violence and this is very important to everyone who has been a part of my CEO Challenge,” he said. Cr Blundell and members of his CEO Challenge working party will attend the CEO Challenge judging evening on 22 November in Brisbane. There are nine other challenge contenders from around Queensland. “I’m looking forward to the judging night but really in the end I’m pleased to have raised a lot of awareness about domestic violence and given a profile to a subject that doesn’t receive much attention,” he said.

In brief Stormy impact A MINI-TORNADO spun off a violent storm over Stanthorpe on Monday, taking a motel roof with it. According to SES Local Controller Max Hunter, some of the roofing iron was found 500 metres away. He said SES volunteers were only called out to deal with structural damage to the High Street Motor Inn, but damage to the nearby golf course and showgrounds was later found. “The roof on the horse stables and also the wine pavilion had a bit of damage,” he said.
There are plans to turn the largely idle railway site into a cultural precinct. 110068
Scott deputy again
A station for culture? By STEVE GRAY IT’S a huge, neglected, empty space, a vacuum in the middle of Warwick. But plans are afoot which could see the old railway precinct turned into a cultural and visitor hub for the city. Members of the Warwick and District Chamber of Commerce inspected the 1.2 hectare site and reinvigorated a dusty plan which would see the historic railway station become home to an art gallery, visitor centre and cultural or entertainment precinct. President of the chamber, David Littleproud, said a sub-committee has been studying the potential of the Queensland Railway land. The energetic Southern Downs Steam Railway occupies a corner of the site, but much of the rest is idle, especially the huge and historic goods shed. Queensland Rail offshoot Aurizon operates a
trucking depot from the old Goods Shed of sandstone, hardwood and steel. “We’ve been looking at possible ways to bring in new business opportunities,” Mr Littleproud said. “Obviously it’s an under-utilised resource that could be used in a number of different facets to encourage visitors to the Southern Downs.” Mr Littleproud said the plan is only aspirational and conceptual at the moment. “We have to put it in perspective of cost and what it will cost to the community, because it’s something the community will have to pay for,” he said. Mr Littleproud said the art gallery and tourist information centre, a museum and cultural precinct could be housed there if there is sufficient community support. “As a community we’ve probably underplayed its value. That’s why we need to have a conversation in the community about how we could utilise
it better,” Mr Littleproud said. “It’s definitely a great historical asset to the city.” “We’ve also got remember it’s also the site of a major historical event in terms of the formation of the federal police,” Mr Littleproud said. In 1917 Prime Minister Billy Hughes had an egg thrown at him on the platform during a bitter debate over conscription known as “The Warwick Incident”. A local police officer declined to apprehend the offender and Hughes returned to Canberra where The Commonwealth of Australia Police Force was initially formed of “plain clothed” police officers on 7 December, 1917. It was a precursor to the Federal Capital Territory Police Force formed in 1927 to police the Australian Capital Territory, A.C.T. Police in 1958, Commonwealth Police Force in 1975 and eventually the Australian Federal Police formed in October, 1979 after the Sydney Hilton bombing.
FEDERAL LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott was re-elected deputy speaker in the House of Representatives as parliament resumed on Tuesday. In his first public comments Mr Scott called for more respect in the House. “A new page has been turned in this 44th Parliament and it is in our hands to ensure that we are respectful to each other because that is what Australian public demand,” he said. Mr Scott was first elected as deputy speaker last October during the hung parliament. Mr Scott won the post by 91 to 56 votes.

FROM ticketing to shovelling coal, from maintenance to train driving, Southern Downs Steam Railway keeps puffing along, thanks to its allvolunteer crew. They’re qualified, they’re dedicated and they love what they do. Their first passenger service ran to Clifton in 2009 and the C17 locomotive now hauls vintage carriages from its home base in Warwick south to Stanthorpe and Wallangarra, north to Hendon, Clifton and Toowoomba and west to Inglewood, Goondiwindi and Toobeah. Gary Summerville was a carpenter joiner by trade, became a manual arts teacher and now hobby farms. “I find the old girl very interesting to work with,” he said as he did maintenance on the C17. “I’m more mechanical in my old age and I spent enough of my time working with wood.” David McInnes had a varied working life,
from retail to farming to food processing. Like some other volunteers he has graduated from model trains to the C17 and other big boys toys. “I’ve had an interest in model trains since I was a nipper,” he said. He had a technical school education which is proving useful for maintenance on the refurbished locomotive and rolling stock. Ed Diery taught science at Warwick State High School before retirement. He was roped in to the steam railway by a former railway fitter six years ago. “He knew I was interested in trains and needed to be got off the streets,” Ed joked. They all do it for nothing but the joy of steam and the camaraderie to be found down near the Warwick railway station. Southern Downs Steam Railway volunteers’ continual goal will be to provide the region with a regular tourist railway.

Cut costs Honouring their service to save By STEVE GRAY TENTERFIELD’S need for more money could be met by cutting costs, not just raising rates, an opponent of council’s plan to seek a Special Rates Variation says. Landowner Richard Holland said the council has stated it needs to raise $9.1 million over the next decade through its application to the NSW government for the Special Rates Variation. The same amount could be saved by a 16 per cent reduction in council’s staff costs, Mr Holland said. “Consider that in the most recent financial year the council spent $5.8 million on staff salaries and benefits, he said. “Over 10 years this would be roughly $58 million spent on staff salaries and benefits. This $9.1 million is just 15.7 per cent of the $58 million projected wages bill. “Easy math, he said. Mr Holland said the cost-savings equated to the council shedding 15 full-time equivalent jobs from its 95
staff, thereby making the same revenue as the Special Rates Variation over 10 years. “Alternatively everyone in council could take a 16 per cent pay-cut - and, given the state of the economy wherein many private people have taken larger pay-cuts than this recently. “It seems only fair that bureaucrats should be subject to the same haircut, he said. Mr Holland said the council has attempted to push a pay-cut on councillors but refused to push one on the main expense of council - the council staff themselves. He said he was a landowner and ratepayer in Tenterfield Shire but receives no services and he will be be expected to pay almost twice what he pays the council if the rates variation is granted. Council staff on Monday night completed a series of community meetings throughout the Tenterfield Shire, attempting to justify the need for the variation to general rates. If granted, rates in the shire will grow by over 80 per cent in the following decade.
THE 2013 Armistice Day commemorated the end to two wars, the so-called Great War of 1914-18 and the Korean War which raged up and down the Korean Peninsula between 1950 and 1953. Ray “Curley Parker served in Korea and said he believes he is the only veteran of the fighting living in Warwick. The armistice bringing an unsettled peace was signed 60 years ago. Mr Parker proudly displayed a medal and sash presented by the president of South Korea to all who served in the war. The Warwick cenotaph commemorates two men who did not come home listed as Newman T.C. and Siebenhausen N.A. Southern Downs mayor Peter Blundell wore the tricolour sash given to him by the mayor of the French town of Pozieres. He said the French still commemorated the contribution Australian diggers made during World War I.

Rangers: The beginning By STEVE GRAY FOLLOWING our series of stories on the Cunningham Rangers, an original member has come forward to tell how the famed group began. Now 93 years old, Belle Frizzell has fond memories of the Cunningham Rangers. Belle is the daughter of the Rangers’ founder and boss, David Hutton. “In 1938 Ned Portley went on a trip to America and observed a troop of horses conducting intricate manoeuvres and as a result he brought back the idea to Australia,” Mrs Frizzell writes. “On his return he talked to David Hutton of Cunningham and said that this would be a good project for David. “He also brought 12 coloured sombreros back to Australia and also the plan how the horses conducted the dance.
Spano’s Proudly Australian Owned
“These ideas and hats were then used by David Hutton in the first performance of the Cunningham Rangers. We had had coloured shirt made by McWhirters in Brisbane, as no dress manufacturer was available locally,” she said. “Once we had all the plan in place we then practised the dance on the verandah at David Hutton’s property Bellgarth - without horses. “David then chose six boys and six girls for the team. Those members rode up to 20 miles to attend training sessions to train the horses and their riders. “Our uniforms were very colourful wearing coloured hats, white jodhpurs, red white and blue waistcoats made out of show ribbons.” Mrs Frizzell said the Rangers first performance was at the Warwick Rodeo in 1939.

“The group was very well received and requests for our performances were coming from many places as word was passed around,” she said. “Over the following years many members of the group changed, however the format and the performance did not. “Although the group started in Warwick we travelled far and wide to perform for many show societies, some of the places we performed were as far north as Cairns and as far south as Maitland NSW,” Mrs Frizzell said.

TENTERFIELD Shire Council is keeping the dream alive, despite a knockback from its northern neighbour. Mayor Peter Petty and fellow Ward A councillor Gary Verri want to link Bald Rock and Girraween national parks by road. The two parks on opposite sides of the state border are linked by mountain bike trails. However the pair have a steep hill to climb. The road proposal has already been knocked back at a State Government level and the Southern Downs Regional Council quickly dismissed the idea at its September meeting. The Queensland councillors are concerned the plan could divert urgently-needed funds from the Mt Lindesay Highway.

Blokes score FOLLOWING a successful Mental Health Month Program, Tenterfield Community Hub will put the focus on Indigenous Men’s Health in Movember. Pitching in with Tablelands Mental Health to support Aboriginal Men, the Hub will have “gift packs” available for indigenous blokes visiting the community Hub at 204 Rouse Street, Tenterfield this month. Co-ordinator Gail Galloway believes it is a better way to spread the men’s health message than growing a moustache. Instead some Aboriginal artists have agreed to lend a hand to raise the profile of the issue by adding some chalk art for the footpath outside the shop.
By STEVE GRAY THANK heavens for Skype. Warwick SES volunteer Roslyn Newley was to be recognised as Regional Member of the Year, but it had to be kept secret from her until SES Week. Her husband, SES Local Controller John Newley, kept silent even though he knew the honour was coming. So, in blissful ignorance, Roslyn secretly booked them a holiday, meaning both were absent when the award was due to be handed over by SES Area Director Michelle McNiece. Fortunately Skype came to the rescue and Roslyn’s colleagues were able to congratulate her, albeit in cyberspace. In recognising her 20 years of dedicated service Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Jack Dempsey said in a statement she was the “backbone of the Warwick SES Unit”. “The Warwick SES is a strong, energetic and cooperative group that enjoys activations and task force deployments, and without Roslyn this level of service to the community would not be possible,” he said. Roslyn is now eligible to be named SES volunteer of the year for Queensland when it is announced this weekend. Members of the Warwick, Stanthorpe and Wallangarra SES units were presented with service medals at the ceremony.
Festive links A FUND-RAISING Pirate Party will be held at Tenterfield Pool on 22 November. The venture will raise funds for Tenterfield’s Wintersong Carnival in June 2014. Tenterfield Shire Council also recently approved the Flood Piano Project which has been on the drawing board since 2012 as an exempt development for the creek land cycleway. This project has been instrumental in forging an ongoing sculpture walk program for the area. With a newly formed public arts committee in place, other community art initiatives are now being encouraged for the shire.

Early blues for merger Members of Granite Belt Wine and Tourism have threatened to go it alone if the Southern Downs Regional Council proceeds with plans announced last week to combine the tourism promotions under one banner by July next year. Granite Belt Wine and Tourism president Bill James said the original plan, in which he participated, recommended an overarching committee for 12 months to see what it was like, to investigate ways the local organisations could work together. He said the two areas were very different when it came to tourism. “The Granite Belt Wine Country brand is very important to the Granite Belt,” Mr James said.
By STEVE GRAY THIS has the makings of an unhappy marriage. Plans to merge tourism promotions on the Granite Belt with those for Warwick and district have not gone over well. There is perception that the two districts do different things, although each does them well. Whereas Warwick tourism depends on a few big events a year, the Granite Belt has become a destination for those seeking wine, cooler weather and National Parks. It’s this events tourism versus destination tourism that is at the heart of the current dispute.
“The reaction we’ve had from members down here is one of ’what are they doing to us?’. Well, we’re not sure yet.” Mr James said before amalgamation there was nothing that pulled the two regions together or they did together. “They were just two separate organisations at that stage,” Mr James said. There was more need for information about the plan, he said. “I’m not saying that us getting together is not going to work.” “The thing that concerns us is there’s no detail given to us in this at all as to how it’s to work.”
Mayor Peter Blundell said the single board will be transitional, but could have real benefits. “Under a more co-ordinated structure there will be greater opportunities to benefit from programs and support available from the state and Commonwealth governments. Also it will be better for the stakeholders that really matter most - our customers; our visitors, who we believe are keen to visit the region in ever increasing numbers,” he said. Mr James criticised the announcement of the new union. He said the first he knew of council’s decision was a call from the media. That’s no way to start a marriage.
Rock works to reduce slips FLOOD repairs are about to start on the Cunningham Highway near the top of Cunningham’s Gap. The Department of Transport and Main Roads said loose materials need to be removed from the embankment surface in the vicinity of Gap Creek Bridge to prevent further slips. The repairs are due to extreme wet weather in January. Traffic will be reduced to one lane each way during the work. The overtaking lane will be closed to all vehicle traffic. Motorists can expect delays with reduced speed limits and reduced lane widths, while short, periodic full closures may be required to safely remove large rocks or debris from the embankment. The work on Monday to Friday from 6am to 6pm, is expected to start Monday 18 November and be completed early in 2014.

THEY give new meaning to “house proud”. The senior citizens at Regency Park retirement village have created their own immaculate gardens and they’ll be open to the public this weekend, 16 and 17 November. There are 10 themed gardens, all accessible by wheelchair, including Outback, Japanese, Chinese, English, Willow Pattern and even a Munchkin garden. Many are adorned with sandstone sculptures carved onsite by resident Ray Tindall. But that’s not the end of it. Individual residences take responsibility for their own spaces, and the result is a whole community creating beautifully neat but varied garden beds. Three of the resident gardeners have won the Warwick Horticultural Society Spring Garden Competition three years running and Regency

IT HAS been formally announced that the controversial referendum to change the Australian Constitution has not survived the new Government. So councils will remain councils without all the trappings accorded politicians! However, I was startled to read elsewhere that $3.5 million spent on advertising and marketing for the change will cost taxpayers heaps. It was also news to this ratepayer that councils had added a levy to rates to raise a war chest to pay for their campaign to pass the referendum. Was the Southern Downs Regional Council one of those? On 7 August this writer noted that $71.39 had been added to the cost of rates paid in 2012, so was this addition a levy, or for the service delivery by council I had not noticed? With the new government having no plans to put the issue back on the agenda, councils will be refunding in full any levy they added to the 2013 rates forthwith. This is the honourable way, councillors is it not? Melba Morris Allora
RE: E. Johns (Free Times 7 November). Part of the comment by E. Johns is somewhat obvious. Children brought up by parents with religious beliefs are influenced by them. The same thing happens to children whose parents are atheists. So what! There is nothing new under the sun with this comment. However the comment referencing the translation work of the King James Bible is incorrect. E. Johns states that “King James (for personal reasons) had the Bible rewritten in his own version. The King James translators not only believed in, but also respected the divine inspiration of the Old and New Testament texts. In 1611 these were based on the most authoritative texts available at the time. The Old Testament translation was based on the Masoretic texts which had been faithfully hand written, letter by letter from the sixth century on. These themselves were based on earlier traditions of scrupulous scribes. The King James New Testament was based on the English translation work of William Tyndale (1525) which itself was based on the ‘Textus Receptus’ which was the earliest printed version based on the earlier work called the ‘Byzantine Text’, which from the end of the Seventh Century was the most widely circulated and accepted New Testament text. Casino threat THE PLAN to grant three new casino licences in Queensland to bring the number to seven may turn the state into a cesspool of high roller crime and corruption. It is likely that millions of dollars of dirty crime and tax avoided money is laundered or lost in casinos. Premier Newman assures us that extra government revenue is not a reason for granting the extra licences. Did he say it with a wink and a nudge? Without extra revenue, from somewhere; how will the massive state debt be repaid or even reduced? The answer lies in a state bank with power to create credit (money) just like the banks do, plus interest. Then we would not need tax money from gambling dens for the rich. Because our politicians do not have the courage to defy the United Nations and the BIG world banks; pigs will fly before we see a State People’s Bank. Jay Nauss Glen Aplin

Lacking dignity
THE former speaker of the House of Representatives Anna Burke, Labor, Victoria who replaced Peter Slipper Liberal, Queensland, has not given the position of speaker or the Australian Parliament dignity in the most recent months of sitting. (I had written to her a number of times with positive suggestions). I cannot admit to enjoying her screeching and bawling out of members who disobey standing orders, as if the Victorian member was a cheer squad leader of the Collingwood football team. Her latest foray was to speak to an assembled group of newly elected members of the Parliament who sat in stony silence reminding me of a group of nervous freshers at a college being addressed with the wry
comments of a leader of the students’ union or the SRC. There has been no dignity in the performance of Speaker Burke who for the sake of some ludicrous use of gender neutral language had been dubbed by her fellow Labor members in the Parliament as not the former ‘Madam Speaker’ but truncated to simply ‘Speaker’. The title used to address her by Labor members I suspect may have been at her own request. Her issues as a feminist have been obvious by raising the issues about the number of female appointees to the front benches, particularly the ministry of the government. Warren James Tweed Heads

TEMP Solutions is a new Warwick-based business started by Nicole Kane. It aims to fill any short-term staffing shortages, so operators can get on with running their business. There’s those times when an employee gets sick, staff training courses coincide with leave or there’s that extra big account and some additional help is needed for a couple of days. Don’t forget holidays are fast approaching! Nicole explains how her business Temp Solutions began ... “A few years ago I was working in a business with 15 staff and I was the only admin employee,” she said. “On one hand this was great; I knew the office inside out. On the other hand, having a day off for any reason created issues. “I could never have a Thursday off as that’s when pays were done. I always had to be there for the start and end of month for the accounts, and there were many other variables. “So this got me thinking that there must be many other businesses in the same position with their very capable admin employee, but no cover for them when they were away. “I aim to fill that gap. Short term great staff, last minute or pre-booked; we try to be as flexible as we can be.” With eight staff ready to go at a moment’s notice, and one permanently based in Stanthorpe, the team at Temp Solutions offers flexibility and experience. Visit Temp Solution’s new website www.warwicktempsolutions.com.au or call Nicole on 0427 026 820 to see how they can help.

WHEN holidays come around it’s good to think about the safety of you and your family. So to ensure you get to your destinations safely here are a few tips: Prepare your car – have it serviced and check that you’re prepared for emergencies with a blanket, torch and first aid kit. Prepare yourself – be rested before a long drive, plan the trip so you share the driving and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue. If you plan to have a drink – plan not to drive. If you have children in the car ensure they are in the appropriate child restraint. If you’re travelling with pets make sure they are restrained – for everybody’s safety. Tow check when towing a trailer or caravan. Brush up on good driving techniques.

Driver fatigue: When setting off on a long trip don’t leave too early in the morning because your body clock believes you should still be asleep. Have a 15-minute rest every two hours. On a long trip, especially in holiday season, there are Driver Reviver stops which provide a cup of tea or coffee, so make sure you take advantage of them. Tow check: If towing a trailer or caravan inspect: Tyre condition and tyre inflation – including spare. Towbar and towing equipment is secure. All electrical connections are secure and lights work correctly. Trailer brakes work correctly. Rear view mirrors are adjusted correctly. Safe driving: Maintain a safe distance between your car and the car in front
· · · · ·
It’s a good idea to always keep a minimum three seconds gap between you and the car in front. When it’s raining and/or foggy double the distance to six seconds no matter what speed you’re doing. Smooth driving: Don’t rush into things. Plan ahead when driving. Make early decisions on braking and accelerating. Change gears and brake smoothly to avoid skidding. This will provide a smoother drive for yourself and your passengers while also providing less wear and tear on the vehicle and helping you save on fuel costs. Keep left: When driving on a dual lane road always keep to the left lane. Use the right hand lane for overtaking; turning right or when roadworks are being carried out and there is no other choice. Indicate early Always indicate when changing lanes, 30 metres wherever practical, to advise other motorists of what you are doing.

Check your rig before taking off. 109938 Slow down early ALWAYS slow down coming to an intersection especially if you are towing a van. Your braking distance will be greater than when you’re not towing, so make sure you allow for this. You must stop on a stop sign/line. Driving at night Driving at night requires more skill and concentration than at daytime due to your restricted vision. Oncoming headlights can obscure your
vision and pedestrians can be near impossible to see. Leave a bigger gap between you and the car in front to allow for your reduced vision and reaction time. Road rage Stay relaxed and try not to let other people’s driving skills or decisions worry you. If another driver makes a mistake don’t get angry just concentrate on your own driving skills, behavior and safety.

Chevy has mulch to like won against 20 other entrants with 184 likes on Facebook. Cathy Ryan thanked Fitzroy Motors for the use of parts for the display. Parts from a 1936 Chevrolet were initially used, then replaced with parts from a 1938 Chevrolet when the first vehicle had to be returned for restoration. Inspiration for the winning display came from something that Cathy remem-

WARWICK Art Gallery is very proud to be exhibiting a collection of paintings by Philip Skinner during November and December. Philip Skinner was born in Winchester, England in 1926. His parents encouraged him very early in his life to write, to paint, and to compose music. Philip went to the Central School of Art in London and this was followed by further study at the Courtauld Institute. It was the family business that eventually brought Philip to Western Australia where the sparse vegetation and hot red earth blistering under the bright, hard light of searing skies inspired the artist within. Although Philip divided his time between Australia, England, and the United States, Australia remained his spiritual home. He eventually became a resident of Toowoomba, a city he loves and in which he has lived for many years. Philip Skinner has exhibited widely in Australia, England, Europe, and the United States and his work is held in both private and public collections in these countries. The exhibition titled Shifting Realities, has been curated by well respected Toowoomba arts educator and writer Sandy Pottinger.

VALLEY VIEWS, PEACEFUL LIFESTYLE A PROPERTY of this nature and size rarely becomes available in the Upper Swanfels Valley area, all the features of the valley apart from the magnificent views and serenity of the area are only part of the appeal. This property would be suitable for agisting cattle or horses as there is ample water from a creek, bore and high rainfall to fill any water tanks and along with a 10-acre irrigation licence to grow any feed or crops. This three bedroom home has a large sleep out, bathroom plus an extra shower to help avoid trudging dirt through the home. It also has a large lounge, kitchen-dining room and good sized bedrooms. A separate old cottage would suit a student or artist. If renovated, this would be an asset for a large family or artist or farm-stay accommodation. The property also has nine solid stables, hay shed, along with chemical, saddle and three-bay open machinery sheds. The property is 107 acres consisting of approximately 70 acres of cultivation, 30 acres light timber country, along with acerage on the creek frontage which would be ideal for growing vegetables or lucerne for animals or sale. The property is currently divided into six paddocks and a laneway. All this commercial value along with the peace, quite and magic valley and mountain views.

Give this triage team a try 24 Hours In Emergency SBS One, Wednesdays, 8.30pm
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14
STEP inside one of Britain’s busiest emergency departments ... and into one of the best medical documentaries on mainstream television. 24 Hours In Emergency is one of the finest British shows and one of the most dramafilled, exciting docos.
It follows the stories of those unfortunate enough to land themselves in some hot water, one way or another. Like the tagline for the show, we are all one step, slip-up or unlucky break away from an emergency situation. Week to week, there are patients who have been hit by cars cycling to work, children burnt dancing near fireplaces and ba-
bies turning blue, fighting for life. There is nothing more powerful than watching some of the best ED doctors, nurses and staff working to save the life of someone’s wife, brother, baby girl or best friend. It’s also fascinating when they follow up with those who have survived and their families, for an insight into how they are faring a few months on from their accident.
24 Hours in Emergency is like watching the best soap opera - there’s humour (mainly from the drunken antics of some of those who end up in the ED) as well as plenty of tears, prayers and happy endings. It’s the sort of show that flies under the radar but it’s so addictive. There’s nothing like it. - Danielle Galvin

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Mercury has just entered Scorpio. Scorpio is all about finding the magic that comes through totality. The moment is here for a major creative act. Each creation involves a simultaneous destruction of all that is uncreative. You are brewing change. Soon you will be in full fruit. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) As the Scorpio Sun brings in a deep existential shift, so you become a very philosophical crab. Certain changes can only be managed by having a wide enough overview, to be able to embrace difficulty into the grand scheme of things. Sit in your arm chair and have a good ponder. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) Though the spotlight is shining on you, you don’t feel empowered. You aren’t at all an imposter. You deserve your position. It’s just that the Scorpio Sun is unnerving you in much the same way that a scorpion can unnerve a lion. Face your feelings. Be the courage that you symbolise. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) Mars is mostly setting up harmonious and powerful outcomes. Though, he is opposing Chiron, the wounded healer. This implies that it would be best to know that your journey isn’t just a pragmatic one; it’s a journey of healing, wholeness and rehabilitation too. Know your cure. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) After a quiet patch, it is time to slowly open at least one eye, to the possibilities of interaction. You are nearly done with whatever needed to happen in seclusion. Have a look around for the interesting and appropriate people required to fuel your next adventure. But don’t rush.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Having spent time getting those roots down deep, the moment is coming for you to poke your head above the ground and be seen. Though your time on centre stage isn’t quite here, it’s getting close. It would be best to get prepared. Warm your engine. Be steady in aim and intent. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) Venus is moving close to Pluto. She’s not quite there but she’s getting near. Venus is of course love. Pluto, in essence, is the garbage disposal unit in the sky. His job is to turn leaves orange and ready them to fall. As Venus meets Pluto, love goes through a seasonal cleanout. Trust it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) The whole huge issue of home, is at the forefront of your thoughts and feelings. Are you so full of ideals that nothing that is offered to you satisfies your expectations? At some point, life will ask you to choose between ideals and reality. Either choice is perfect, if embraced totally. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) Mars in Virgo is leaning on you. Putting it bluntly, he is saying – get on with it. The siren lure of the Pisces ocean, can easily lead to being becalmed. Float around in circles no more. Put what you know is real into practise. Shift the most important things to the top of your laundry list.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) Those old patterns that have served you well but that are now anachronisms, are sticking out with such obviousness that they are on the verge of parody. This is a time of regeneration. This means that that which no longer serves you, needs to turn to dust. Consider working in a new way.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Mercury has entered. He/she, is both the trickster and the guide. You are in for an interesting time figuring out which is which. You’re charged up and on a mission. The success of this mission depends on being able to discern wisdom from the rampant excesses of your own mind.

Triumph and tragedy YOUR VERY OWN OLYMPIC MEDAL
The
EVER fancied an Olympic track and field gold medal but not quite up to the standard? If you have a lazy $1 millon-plus you could be in the running to pick up one of the four Olympic gold medals won by track and field great Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Games. According to the Laguna Niguel-based auction house, the medal to be sold is unidentifiable to a specific event. Owens gave the medal to his friend, the dancer and movie star Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, as a thank you for helping Owens find work in entertainment after he returned from Berlin. The medal is being sold by the estate of Robinson’s late widow, Elaine Plaines-Robinson and it has been confirmed the medal is the original; the whereabouts of the other three is unknown.

BACK on dry land ... the only thing injured - my wallet, which certainly took a hit at Flemington. The Cup meeting once again provided all the theatre and spectacle you would expect. Less than a week after the event racing fans were reminded of the fragility of jockeys and the ever-present danger they face as news filtered through of a tragic fall at the Sunshine Coast last Saturday. The fall cost the life of experienced jockey Desiree Gill. Not for her the glamour of Flemington. She was one of the thousands of jockeys who ride each week and who never reach those lofty heights. This was an experienced horsewoman who had 30 years of experience under her saddle. A mentor to junior apprentices, male and female, this mother of two immersed herself in many facets of racing along with her husband Barry, a well-known trainer. We tend to forget that each and every time a rider is legged up on a mount - no matter where or when - it is an extremely dangerous occupation, something as punters we should all keep in mind when we are less than happy after losing our dollars. Fortunately, tragedy like this doesn’t visit racing often - but when it does it cuts deeply into the racing fraternity. - Casey
Debutant at 31 THERE were no real surprises when the Australian cricket side for the first Ashes test at the Gabba next week was announced on Tuesday. George Bailey who had probably given up all hope of a baggy green will become the oldest test debutant since the turbulent days of World Series Cricket when he takes his place down the order against the old enemy. Jeff Moss was also 31 when he made his debut in the final test of the 1978-79 series against Pakistan in Perth. Bailey has been rewarded for his stellar limited overs form over the past 18 months. He has
SOUTHS DOMINATE
Can George Bailey make a successful transition from the one-day arena to test ace? Selectors certainly think so. scored 1539 runs at an average of 54.96, with two centuries and 11 half-centuries. Only India’s Virat Kohli, with 1578 at 60.69, exceeds that tally and he has played an additional match. Another likely to be under intense scrutiny is David Warner, who we all know can be very, very good or very, very bad (off and on the field). Beefy Botham has thrown cold water on the Aussies’ chances, declaring them unable to take 20 wickets in a game and unlikely to win a match. While that might be a tad confrontational there is an element of truth. There is no doubt that our bowling attack has had issues. The selectors have recalled paceman Mitchell Johnson who has had mixed results at the Gabba. The quick seems to have found more consistency since returning from a lengthy lay-off due to a serious toe injury. Selectors are looking for Johnson to complement established seamers Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle. The 12 man squad is: Michael Clarke (c), Brad Haddin (vc), George Bailey, James Faulkner, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, David Warner, Shane Watson.
SILLY BILLY BILLY Slater’s squeaky clean image looked in danger of taking a blow (no pun intended) after reports the star fullback had been involved in an incident at an Irish nightclub after the Kangaroos’ big win over Ireland. With Slater cleared of any wrong doing, deemed to have retaliated in self defence after he was king hit, there are still some who are intent on making a mountain out of the incident. Shock horror that the Aussie team should be out together have a few drinks celebrating a sensational win over Ireland, having been given a free night by their minders. The incident has overshadowed the great football the Australians have produced throughout the early round of the World Cup. They are in sensational touch and looked to be building momentum and their combinations are looking sharper (Billy’s right certainly is effective). The win over Ireland means the Kangaroos remain undefeated after their three pool games and they now take on the United States next Saturday in Wrexham in Wales. The toughest task for the Aussie contingent at the moment is deciding which is the best 17 to put on the paddock?
SOUTHS continue to cut a swathe through the Stanthorpe Cricket Competition. On Saturday they proved far too strong for Wanderers who were without the services of their star youngster Hayden Lanza and Jamie Carnell. Without two of their most prolific run scorers Wanderers struggled despite a gutsy knock of 31 from their captain Tim Harslett. Trent Rogers (17) was the only other batsman to give the bowling attack any resistance. Five of the South bowlers took wickets in what was a tidy innings from the men with the ball. South’s cruised past the required score of 139 with 18 overs to spare for the loss of only three wickets. Ex-Coasters players Danny Folkers (50) and Tim Featherstone (33) teamed up for their first partnership in over four years. The old firm were soon in the groove and scored the bulk of the runs for Souths. The inclusion of Featherstone who has not played cricket for several season will further strengthen the Souths’ line-up.
LEFTY STARS IN RUMBLE RISING star Josh Hynes was the star of the Red Rooster Rumble last week. The lefty took out the prize with a magnificent score of 30 points. Alf Matthews returned 27 points - normally good enough to win, but that wasn’t the case. Judy Lester took out the other minor placing with 27 points on a countback. In the run downs: Don Warrener and Brian Sullivan (24), Mick Banks (23), Bob Lester and Daryl Collins both with 22. Pins went to Ian Wallace on the fifth and Mick Banks on the ninth. There were no takers for the 7th. Plenty of interest to see how last week’s winner goes after his handicap takes a hit. With the Warwick Invitation on this week there will be no Red Rooster Rumble.

Desiree Gill had recently won the Gympie Cup and kicked home four winners on Melbourne Cup Day in Bundaberg.

In second spot was Adrian Murphy who after a great round finished with 39 points. In the ball run down it was Luke Munro, Bob Lester and Peter Millard 39, Brett Donovan and Nathan Jones 38 and Herb Ware 37. The pins went to Don Warrener 5th, James Buchner 7th and John Wright on the 9th. Other pin results were not available at the time of publication. A reminder that the Warwick Invitational, a two-ball ambrose is on Friday. There will be great food, plenty of cold beverages and the occasional touch of golf. If you are interested in entering, places are still available and you should call the pro shop.

Local Sport BEWARE CHARLIE CARP
LIGHTS BALL ACTION THE new lights shone bright and there was plenty of action as the first round of the new Twenty20 competition between the four Warwick and Stanthorpe cricket teams got underway at the C.F. White last Friday night. In the opening game of the series, which culminates on 13 December with a final between the top teams, Stanthorpe team Valleys - which sits at the bottom of the ladder - took on Warwick and District premiers Wheatvale. If the visitors expected an easy evening they were in for a shock. Curtis Allen (41) and Alistair Middleton (28) where the backbone of the Valley’s innings. Mr Reliable, Wheatvale’s captain Chris Cantrell was the pick of the bowlers returning with figures of 3/10. Valley’s set the visitors a target of 137. In reply Grail Cantrell (34) and Collins (30) both batted well. Valley’s bowlers Damian Anderson and Alistair Middleton each picked up two wickets. The difference however was the outstanding fielding display by Valleys who restricted the Wheatvale to a total of 115 giving Valley a first up win and bragging rights over the Warwick premiers.
CONSISTENCY WINS OUT IT WAS another big day of golf at the Wallangarra Golf Course last Saturday, on the back of the Wallangarra Open the previous week. On Saturday, the Bob Ditton Memorial trophy was decided. A large field turned out for the annual golf day. Kevin Miller proved a model of consistency in his round and finished with a fine score of 45 points. Miller also grabbed the approach shot. Not far afield in second spot was Gary Sutcliffe with 42, Alan Pearce 41 and Tony Murphy 39. As a consolation Murphy picked up the birdies nest. NTPs went to Alan 3/15 and the 9th. Brendan McMillan 11th. Approach went to Kevin Miller and the birdies nest went to Tony. A reminder to all that this Saturday’s game is a 4BBB and Sunday the Wallangarra Fishing Club host a two-person ambrose.
Rochelle and Jodi Bynon at the firing lines as range officers and timekeepers.
WELCOME RAIN ON THE RANGE WELCOME overnight showers in the Inglewood area put a smile on plenty of faces and it also meant the Wild West town at the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range was not quite as dusty. Those cowboys and cowgirls were able to keep their boots a little clean. It was a busy day with two events held in the morning: a single action and muzzle loading. Single action events are a combination of sixshooter guns, lever action rifle and double barrel hammer guns. All competitors are timed and lose points for missing a target. Ten shots are fired from single action revolvers (where the hammer must be cocked for each shot) at metal targets often in a complicated sequence. That is followed by the lever action rifle fired at 10 targets and finally the double barrel shotgun is blasted at two drop down plates. Some outstanding scores under 50 seconds were achieved. The range was ablaze with flashes from the muzzles of six-shooters, rifles and guns as the 10 competitors got into the thick of the action. Winner was Jodi Bynon ahead of runner-up Rochelle Bynon leaving Tom Donald the crumbs in third spot. Richard Burbidge was successful in the 50-metre benchrest muzzle loading event finishing ahead of Graham Morgan. Following the lunch break the benchrest area was well attended as members and visitors alike zeroed their rifles in. A reminder that the Inglewood club’s annual Christmas Junior Comp will be held on Sunday December 15. Everyone is welcome and a barbecue will be provided. The junior vent is a triathlon with pistol, rifle and clay events. This Sunday there is something for everyone. For the rifle enthusiast, benchrest with rimfire is planned for the morning and centre fire after lunch. For the pistol packers there will be practice in the morning and 25m or 50m competition after lunch. A monthly meeting is scheduled during the lunch break.
REALITY CHECK AFTER a spectacular win on Friday night in their Twenty20 game, Valleys came crashing back to
Benchrest shooting with all benches filled.
earth Saturday as the side backed up in a fixture match against RSL. It was a harsh reality check for Valleys who unfortunately were without the services of eight of their regular line-up and they were forced to take the field with only 10 players. It was always going to be a tough ask against some quality opposition. RSL captain Todd Brady set the benchmark for his team when he elected to bat first. Brady notched up an unbeaten 106 which included 12 fours. Brady received solid support from Jason Lawer (27), Will Dowie (28), Ross Lupton (37) and Duane Lihou (39) as RSL amassed a big total of 285 against the under-strength Valleys line-up. The Valleys players had their work cut out all innings as the RSL batsmen were able to find plenty of holes in the field. Josh Anderson, who despite bowling well all innings finished wicketless. His brother Damian picked up two wickets. RSL set Valleys a massive run chase and with so many of their regular players missing the task was impossible. In a disappointing innings they were bowled out cheaply for a meagre 92 runs. Only Curtis Allen showed any resistance. Allen was the only Valley’s batsman to reach double figures. He top scored with 22. The RSL bowlers could sniff a big win and were not to be denied Will Dowie, Daniel Anderson 3/13, Anthony Di Bella took three wickets apiece as RSL cruised to victory.
competition to be played under lights. Organisers are planning to hold the junior competition in conjunction with the senior night games - with softball being played from the afternoon through into the evening. Plans are already afoot for another visit from Softball Queensland development officers. The development officers will visit some of the local schools early in the first term of 2014 in a bid to encourage greater participation in softball. The Granite Belt Softball Association is holding their AGM on Tuesday 19 November at 7pm at Sullivan Oval at which time a new executive will be elected. Current president Karen Britton said that it is important that potential players and supporters of the game get along to the AGM. This is the most important meeting of the year, the president said. We are calling for nominations for the positions of president, secretary, treasurer and two committee members for the executive. “We want to see softball thrive and grow in the district. “It was once a popular sport played by lot of locals and the Granite Belt was renowned for producing talented softball players.” If you are keen to become involved and need more information Karen Britton can be contacted on 0418 746 523.
PAR ENOUGH FOR REEVES
ZAMPROGNO, 1,2,3
A SMALL but competitive field of 11 golfers took out cards for the midweek stroke competition in Stanthorpe last week. David Reeves finished with a par round to take out the event. Reeves could easily have finished at least three shots better had the golfing gods been on the side of his putter.Bob Watts was runner up with nett 70. Watts and Reeves shared putting honours with 25 putts each. Watts also held the approach shot on the 17th. Greg Yap kept the hot players at bay to clean up the 12th. Pin shot as Bob also won the approach on the 17th.
THERE was a buzz on the greens at the Summit Bowls Club last weekend as three generations of the Zamprogno family were represented. Russell ‘Gladiator’ Young and E. ‘Zel’ Zamprogno (21) were too strong for P. ’The Whittler’ Davis and Ray ‘Hitman’ Spiller (19). A. ‘Dynamo’ Zamprogno, P. ‘Easy’ Zamprogno and A. ‘Luthor’ Mattiazzi (34) dominated in their game against the team of M. ‘Bronco’ Huckins, J. ‘Boss’ Harslett, J. ‘V8’ Zamprogno and K. ‘Deadeye’ Mungall (12).This Sunday there is action again for cash - another trophy day with prize-money on offer. Be sure to get your name in early. A reminder to all member that club dues are now payable and the AGM is set down for this evening (Thursday, November 14) at 7pm. All members are expected to attend and all positions are open for nomination.
BIGGER AND BETTER IN 2014 SOFTBALL made a successful return to the Granite Belt last summer with a junior competition and plans are afoot to make the coming season bigger and better. The club is looking to build on the momentum of last season and develop an adult softball
Fun day funds firies’ effort A BUSLOAD of players from Kyogle joined locals for the 15th Annual Woodenbong Rural Fire Brigade Fun Day and three-person Ambrose held at the Woodenbong and District Golf Club. Thirty players from Kyogle ensured a great field of 84 players hit off. The winners, on a countback, with a 24 Nett were Trevor Petty, Ian Reid and Zac Reid. The close runners up were Ross Allwood, Odette Allwood and Reegan Allwood. A huge crowd came to join in the festivities of the fun day.
The barbecue lunch proved very popular, as did the raffles thanks to a bountiful selection of prizes provided by generous donations from local business houses and businesses located in Kyogle and Killarney. “The contribution from local and non-local businesses, many of them struggling, to our annual fund-raiser is outstanding,” Woodenbong Fire Brigade captain Greg Gulliver said. “It goes to show that the community really does appreciate the effort which the RFS members put in.” The Melbourne Cup Cal-
cutta showcased Paul McKey’s wit and also his skill as an auctioneer, and resulted in some hotly contested bids. Patrons were also treated to a phantom race call of the Melbourne Cup presented by well known Sky Racing identity Anthony Collins. His call was well received, however, ‘his’ winner missed out by about a length in the real Cup race. Future funds will be used to better equip local firefighters with equipment which is not usually available through the NSW Rural Fire Service. – Joyce Marsh

CHARLIE Carp should be trembling with trepidation as Anglers prepare to take up the challenge in Sunday’s family carp competition. For those anglers who take up the environmental challenge this Sunday it is, lines in at 8am with the competition running until noon. There will be presentation of prizes in Queen’s Park at the close of the event. The Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group and the Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association are once again organising the annual event. All anglers young and old must register for the competition which is free to enter to be eligible to hook one of the many prizes on offer. There will be two registration points - the first near Tiddalick and the other behind the skateboarding area. The competition will take place along the reach of the Condamine River from Scots Weir through the Queen’s Park reach. Plenty of area for anglers and I suspect plenty of carp. The angler who lands the heaviest carp will win the major prize - a $100 gift voucher courtesy of Warwick Outdoor and Sports. Plenty of time to organise your gear and grab a good supply of your favoured carp bait arrange your own snacks and drinks and organise a family outing as you out Charlie Carp.
