Loney: I’ll vote ‘Liberal’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LABOR stalwart Peter Loney says he will break a lifetime practice to cast his first vote for a Liberal – mayoral candidate Darryn Lyons. Mr Loney, formerly a Labor MP in the seats of Geelong North and its Lara replacement for 14 years until 2006, said other leading candidates carried too much “baggage”. He said certain figures were “going out of their way to attack (Mr Lyons’) credentials in an unfair way”.

behind those comments.” Mr Loney said he wanted to back a fresh, forward-looking candidate. “Geelong has to stop looking back and start looking forward. Darryn is a candidate that can actually move Geelong forward. “He declared his party involvement upfront and says what he wants to do rather than make

ridiculous motherhood statements. “He’s not acting as the front for a cabal with its own agenda. “We have to get a person to lead the council and the community without having to seek the advice or view of non-elected groups, committees and individuals before doing anything. “They’re backing Ken Jarvis who was a total disaster as mayor,

with failures in governance and financial management, according to an auditor general report. “Geelong cannot afford a rerun of Ken Jarvis as mayor.” Mr Jarvis said he was the victim of a “negative campaign run by someone in Geelong” who was using untruths and “innuendo”. “I did not stand because Frank Costa or any other person

asked me to stand,” he said. “I am not a member of the Liberal Party, I am running my own campaign, I am paying for all my campaign expenses out of my own pocket and have received no financial aid from anyone else. “I am not being run by anyone – big end of town, Liberal party or anyone else. If elected I will be beholden to no one and will be acting solely in the interests of the Geelong region.” Full story page 3

A BOOK with celebrity contributors has won a Ceres teenager a national award for “change-making”. The organisers of the Foundation for Young Australians Unleashed Awards said Mariah Kennedy, 17, won the Bright Spark category during a presentation at Sydney Opera House. The awards recognised teenagers “shaping positive change in innovative ways”, the organisers said. Mariah’s book included contributors such as authors Jackie French and Andy Griffiths and cartoonist Michael Leunig. She donated author royalties from Reaching Out: Messages of Hope to aid body UNICEF Australia. “I truly believe that my generation has the power to create movement, a unification of the global community that can end poverty,” Mariah said. The awards organisers said Mariah had raised almost $20,000 for various causes since attending a peace conference in Japan as an 11-year-old.

A SHORTAGE of private rental properties in Geelong for low-income earners has raised “an absolute red flag”, according to a peak human services organisation. Victorian Council of Social Service chief Emma King said the shortage of cheap accommodation was making more people homeless. The Independent reported two weeks ago that home repossessions were up 50 per cent in Geelong’s northern suburbs despite historically low interest rates. Ms King said increased mortgage stress exacerbated the risk of homelessness in the region. “One service provider, the

Salvos in Geelong, has seen 1200 people across the south west with over 900 turn-aways,” she said. “Currently they know of 27 women and 56 children homeless in the Geelong region. “Services are saying it’s increasingly common to hear stories of people sleeping on floors, living in tents in back yards, in caravans and sleeping in cars.” Ms King said Geelong’s problem was different to metropolitan areas where tenants faced higher rates of evictions. “Low-income tenants can’t even find the accommodation in Geelong or have to go further out to find low-cost rentals. “This critical (shortage) ... is

getting worse and pushing more people into housing stress and at risk of homelessness. “This has been exacerbated since the start of the year due to changes to the Single Parent Payment, which saw large numbers of single parents pushed onto the much-lower Newstart Allowance. This is a growing problem for young people, single mothers and unemployed people.” Ms King said rising unemployment and businesses scaling back or closing in Geelong worsened the problem. She said the region’s demographics were working against an increase in affordable rental housing.

Mr Fagg wrote in a letter to the editor of the Independent that Mr Jarvis was the “best-credentialed” to fill the vacancy. Mr Fagg wanted a mayor with a “genuine heart for the people of our community”.

GEELONG’S Trades Hall and acting mayor Bruce Harwood have lashed out at State Government over the timing of a new probe into council ward funding. A report announcing the investigation was widely publicised the day mayoral election kits arrived in Geelong letterboxes. The report included a focus on Trades Hall-backed candidate John Mitchell’s ward spending during his two terms on council. “It’s clearly deliberate,” Trades Hall secretary Tim Gooden told the Independent. “They want to get their man, Ken Jarvis, up at all costs.” Cr Harwood said a Government statement on the inquiry was available to media outlets before City Hall. He strongly rejected any suggestion of wrongdoing at council. “We’re happy for the report and for a review to be done. We are absolutely confident there have been no breaches of the Local Government Act.” Mr Gooden accused the the Government of a specific campaign to gain control of City Hall through the directly elected mayoral process. “There’s a whole agenda behind all this to get as many positions of power as they can,” he said. “When you read all the stuff about ward allocations, I haven’t seen anyone say anything about breaching company laws or banking laws. If there was a problem wouldn’t you give it to police?” The Independent received a media release headlined ‘Report reveals ‘risky’ councillor ward funds’ from Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell’s office on the afternoon of 7 November. The release was dated 6 November. Premier Denis Napthine’s spokesman, Mark Lee, said the Local Government Inspectorate was “entirely independent” of the Government. The Government’s lawyers would be interested in any imputation about the timing of the report’s release, he said. Mr Jarvis said he had “absolutely no personal contact with the premier or any State Government minister since well before this campaign started”. Mr Jarvis said he was not a member of the Liberal party and was not encouraged to stand by the Premier or any Liberal minister.

Barwon Water ‘fracking’ fears By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BARWON Water has revealed concerns about fracking potentially contaminating water supplies. Barwon Water managing director Joe Adamski said the organisation supported the Victorian Government’s moratorium on coal seam gas mining. “Barwon Water would object to any proposal deemed detrimental to the region’s water resources,� Mr Adamski said.

Barwon Water’s environmental consultative committee has alerted the authority’s board to concerns on future mining in the region, according to Geelong Environment Council’s Joan Lindros. Ms Lindros said the committee, witch includes an environment council representative, requested that Barwon Water “build a detailed understanding of potential hazards and impact (that) may arise and potential interactions with water resources�.

The committee urged Barwon Water and other agencies to “form a pro-active position on specific mining and exploration within our water supply regions�, she said. The Independent revealed in June that Lakes Oil had conducted geological and geophysical studies in its permit area, PEP 163, stretching from Geelong to Anglesea. Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber released a 2005 environ-

mental assessment report for a Lakes Oil drill site on Willowite Rd, Paraparap, obtained under Freedom of Information laws. The assessment showed the site was 200m from a drainage line connected to Thompson Creek’s catchment. “A natural drainage line exists south of the drill site about 200m from the lease pad that is hydraulically connected to the downstream Merrigig River,� the report said.

The report identified potential water contamination due to leaks from the well or cross-contamination of aquifers. Lakes Oil Chairman Rob Annells said the Greens campaign against his company was “dishonest�. “All creeks are under native title and we excise all creeks from any permit area – we don’t go near creeks,� Mr Annells said. “All the necessary precautions are there, the authorities police it

and monitor it and the penalties are strong.� Mr Annells said Lakes Oil had no intention of fracking in the region. “It’s too hard, there’s nothing there,� he said. “We don’t hold that permit in high esteem – I’d be surprised if we still hold it.� Mr Annells said Lakes Oil intended to go ahead with drilling at its other Otway basin site near Port Campbell.

A RELATIVELY unknown group will quietly reach a 45-year milestone next month but the members of Geelong Deaf Social Group would like more people to hear all about its achievement. Secretary Valmai Claxton said three female friends formed the group as Geelong Deaf Auxiliary in 1968 only to find their meetings attracted more deaf men than women. “So they changed their name to Geelong Deaf Social Group and it proved popular among the deaf because they could go out during the day,� Ms Claxton said. “The deaf can come along and immerse themselves in deaf culture and language – AUSLAN. Hearing people are welcome to attend and learn to sign, too. “Our members meet to share their lives with one another; for some this is the only opportunity they have to be with other deaf people.� The group’s 45th anniversary celebration will feature a blue and white theme.

CHRISTIAN College is holding tight with controversial plans for a school in Torquay’s Spring Creek despite an independent panel suggesting it could proceed immediately under existing rural zonings. School chief Daryl Riddle said the panel’s report was “a positive step for the school�. “We purchased the property for the purpose of a school. That’s been in limbo for some years but, looking at the panel report, there’s a lot you can read into it. “It’s very positive and hopefully next year we can put some more meat of the bones. At this stage we’re still looking at how the school would look, what the process would be, how we’d approach the council. “The plans have not been completely formalised yet. We’re happy to take it into the new year. “We’re not rushing ahead to get anything by the end of this year, there’s still a lot of work to be done from our end.�

The panel suggestion was part of its report on council’s proposed C66 planning scheme amendment to guide Torquay’s growth. The panel recommended allowing development in the Spring Creek area for one kilometre west of Duffield’s Rd despite widespread public opposition. Councillors will consider the report before voting on a C66 recommendation to Planning Minister Matthew Guy, who must approve the amendment. Surf Coast councillors and officers suggested the panel recommendations could be more favourable to Christian College than the rural zones introduced by the Coalition Government, which allow some limited development of farmland. “It would be logical for them to wait, see people’s attitudes and make decisions accordingly,� an officer said. Mayor Rose Hodge was uncertain about when council would consider the panel report. “But it might be the December meeting,� she said.

POWERCOR is denying local home-owners solar power because of unrealistic limits and inadequate infrastructure, according to an installation operator. City to Surf Solar director Christian Pritchett said the paralysis was afflicting all outlying areas of Geelong and significant parts of the urban area. “Many of our clients who have waited until now to install solar power are finding they’re out of luck,” he said. “Powercor are just trying to protect its assets but instead of nursing the old infrastructure it would be nice if there was more vision from the authorities to

CORIO’S Michael Nunn has gone from zero to hero – from homeless to national employment award winner. The 21-year-old who used to sleep on a mattress behind his local Hungry Jack’s has been named Achiever of the Year at a National Employment Awards for Excellence. Michael officially left school at the age of nine years but had scant education beforehand. A troubled family life led to him joining a travelling carnival at 13, when he discovered drugs. His sole parent moved interstate when he was 16, leaving him nowhere to live. Occasionally couch surfing, Michael resorted to sleeping on an old mattress behind the Hungry Jack’s. His dependence on drugs was cemented, leading to crime and jail. But with the support of Geelong’s Matchworks, he completed a Certificate II in Transport and Logistics, finding work with Cotton On Group. National Employment Services Association chief Sally Sinclair this week credited Nunn’s “incredible courage and determination” to overcome disadvantage.

BUSINESSES have approached Geelong Football Club about advertising on Simonds Stadium’s new light towers, Cats chief Brian Cook has told the Independent. A planning panel will in February consider City Hall’s plan to allow advertising on the towers, which has the club’s backing. Mr Cook said potential advertisers had approached the Cats but all possibilities remained on hold for the time being. “We’ve had a couple people who want to talk about it but there’s not a lot we can do until we get the legislation through. “It may be that they only approve advertising to a certain height, there’s the whole visual intrusion thing and the government’s own bylaws – they’ve got to work through all of that.”

The football club is keen to offset electricity costs for the lights with advertising revenue. The lights are tipped to turn an extra $49 million for the regional economy over the next decade. The four 73-metre towers, installed at a cost of $10 million, have enabled night AFL games at Simonds and open the potential for other major events at the 35,000-capacity ground. A City Hall report on its bid to change planning laws to accommodate advertising on the towers concedes it could impact on the “natural and built environment of Kardinia Park”. “So it would be important that the light tower signage complements the role of Simonds Stadium, the aesthetic of the light towers and does not detract from the quality of the urban environment of Geelong,” the report stated.

VEHICLE ACCESS DURING THE ROAD CLOSURE PERIOD The major intersections within Central Geelong will be managed by Police or a traffic controller; motorists will be permitted to proceed across the course, when safe to do so. Whilst the road closures are in place, it is recommended motorists enter and leave the City via Yarra Street and Myers Street, only. Minor delays are expected. Motorists are asked to be patient and proceed with caution. Businesses requiring deliveries are encouraged to reschedule these around the road closure period. Emergency access will be maintained at all times. EASTERN PARK AND LIMEBURNERS BOAT RAMP ACCESS Access to Eastern Park is available at all times via the Geelong - Portarlington Road, Holt Road, Adams Court and Limeburners Road. Entry to the Limeburners Boat Ramp is available via Limeburners Road and the Geelong - Portarlington Highway only.

REPORTS of big cats in the Otways could possibly be linked to black Asian leopards brought to Australia in the 19th Century, researchers say. John Turner and Simon Townsend, whose Big Cats Victoria website has drawn hundreds of reported sightings across Australia, told the Independent melanistic Asian leopards imported from Malaya by acclimatisation societies in the 1800s could still be stalking the region. Their big-cat claims follow recent reports of Tasmanian tigers along the Surf Coast from Apollo Bay to Freshwater Creek. “We think the leopoards were brought out, but can’t verify, by the Acclimatisation Society but certainly private agents from Asia brought out animals,” Mr Turner said. “There were a lot of private imports by old British boys for sport and also to keep the kangaroo population in control a bit. “Asian leopards are not as aggressive as Indian and African leopards. They’re intelligent, very people-savvy but not people-aggressive. “People say they’ve seen them crossing roads where water or rain has gathered on the side, also at roadkill.” Mr Townsend, who co-authored 2012 book Snarls in the Tea-Tree, said investigators only became aware the last few years of the Asian leopard answer to the ongoing big-cat mystery.

An Ocean Grove couple claimed they saw a large animal with a hyena gait, wolfish head and strange colouring on Anglesea Road close to Blackgate Road last month. Melbourne woman Amanda Ketteridge has since reported a similar animal near Anglesea. A Mount Moriac couple has reported strange sheep killings, telling big-cat hunter Michael Moss they saw a panther twice, three and five years ago, in the district. Freshwater Creek farmer Harry Cook has also reported a Tasmanian tiger several times, including in the last month.

Renos ripping apart heritage By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S housing heritage is under pressure as owners renovate period homes. City Hall heritage advisor David Rowe said safeguarding the region’s architectural tradition has become a balancing act as architects, planners and builders negotiate heritage overlays and home-owner demands. Dr Rowe said an increasingly common practice of preserving just a two-room street frontage in large housing revamps was “the absolute limit and not what we’re trying to achieve”. “It’s tricky – sometimes people don’t want to keep anything,”

he told the Independent. “I don’t support facadism and even with some commercial buildings we try to retain some of the roof building as a threedimensional entity. “With the heritage overlay, I look at about 400 applications a year – it’s pretty full-on.” Mr Rowe said heritage features helped significantly boost property values despite pressure to overcome restricitons on renovations. “The heritage overlay that’s gone in there was promoted by the public. One-thousand properties are affected by overlays and only a handful pushed against it, which suggests the public wants

certainty and the higher return.” Dr Rowe said a building code without heritage coverage and planning laws allowing owners to leave properties unmaintained were hampering protection of historic homes. “No internal controls to 99 per cent of houses and the issue is retain as much outside fabric as you can – windows, weatherboards and obviously you need to replace walls, you can’t expect people to live with drafts,” he said. “You can’t have internal controls, most have been altered before anyway, but in most cases where heritage exists intact people bought the house because of that.”

THE Liberal Federal Government could deliver a Labor promise of funding to develop a tourism industry for Fort Queenscliff, according to MP Sarah Henderson. The Member for Corangamite said she had “made representations� about the funding to Trade

and Investment Minister Andrew Robb. The previous government had promised $60,550 to develop a tourism plan for the fort but the money fell through when Labor lost the election. The plan would be in response to the military’s

declining presence at the fort, with a recent reduction of 160full time personnel leaving the facility with 60 staff. “With clever planning, Fort Queenscliff has the potential to be a real tourism icon,� Ms Henderson said.

NEW telephone and internet connections in older Geelong suburbs have come to a standstill because of asbestos-lined telecommunications pits. Cabling contractor Matt Symes said the ban on asbestos work had been in place for several months. “It’s stopped me finishing a few jobs around the place because there’s still a lot of asbestos around, especially in the older areas,” he said. “Sometimes we can work around it by putting in a temporary plastic pit nearby but it’s

more time-consuming to do that. “I think Telstra is pushing hard to get it going again but often there’s no way around it and we just have to wait.” The Independent reported in July that a “significant number” of asbestos-lined telecommunications pits would affect the rollout of Geelong’s connection to the National Broadband Network (NBN) . Telstra Geelong area general manager Duane Dalton said the company apologised for the delay. “We’ve worked closely with our contractors to ensure they’re

meeting all of our requirements before returning to work, including confirmation of a Class B asbestos removal licence and up-todate training. “Our revision of procedures has led to a requirement for licensing of any staff or contractors who may work with asbestos containing material. “While this review has slowed down our work flow, we’re now getting many contractors licensed and assessed, so they’re returning to work progressively. “As a result we’re now starting to catch up on our outstanding tasks.”

Cash for climate A $150,000 grant will help Geelong and the Surf Coast prepare for heatwaves in a “changing climate”, according to MP Andrew Katos. The state Liberal Member for Corangamite said the money would fund council Heatwaves and Social Vulnerability projects “to help communities get on the front foot” with adaptation plans. LAURIE Cocking says it with a smile but also with a little bit of seriousness. “We grow legal plants hydroponically”. The president of Geelong Hydroponic Gardening admits he is often asked about the connection to those other plants often grown the same way under banks of lights in secret locations. Hydroponics is about the easiest form of gardening around, chuckles Laurie. “There’s no soil, no digging, fertilising, bending or weeding and you can often get better quality produce and yield,” Laurie explains. “And you can grow almost anything - tomatoes, silver beet, parsley, chillies, cabbages, caulies, Brussels sprouts, fruit and even a variety of flowers. “About the only thing you can’t grow hydroponically are mushrooms.” Laurie should know - he’s been involved in hydroponics for more than 38 years, so he’s saved quite a bit on his fruit and vegie shopping. Local hydroponics enthusiasts had to be members of the Melbourne club until they decided to go it alone about a decade ago. Like its produce, the Geelong group is thriving and has even become home to a South Australian hydroponic group.

get simply growing in soil. “Even people who don’t grow hydroponically admit the flavour is far superior. “Hydroponics has been around since 400BC and it’s the way of the future to overcome the scarcity of land. THE people of greater Geelong are thinking deeply before voting in the mayoral election. There has been interest in my level of support for various candidates, many of whom I know and respect. In my view, the key attributes our new mayor needs include effective leadership skills, senior-level organisational experience, a comprehensive understanding of governance, personal integrity and sound values. The mayor needs to be a considered, strategic thinker with the capacity to effectively speak for and credibly represent greater Geelong with government and other key stakeholders. The mayor needs to have a genuine heart for the people of our community This is an all-embracing leadership position to which the mayor must totally devote their intellect, time and energy. It’s much more than a full-time role. I will vote for Ken Jarvis, who I consider the best-credentialed to fulfil this role. I encourage people to think carefully about their preferences, not to necessarily follow the nominated preference order but simply rank the candidates in order of the best capacity to lead council and represent our community. In the end, the collective wisdom of greater Geelong will speak. Whoever is elected will need the community’s support and I am personally prepared to assist our new mayor as they move into their role. It remains my strong belief that State Government must bring forward its review of the legislative model for Geelong’s mayor, deputy mayor and council. Council in clear so far LOCAL Government Minister Jeanette Powell has indicated, following a report and recommendations by the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate’s review of councillor discretionary funds, that the review included an assessment of City of Greater Geelong’s $7.2 million Community Priority Projects scheme. It should be noted that no breaches of the Local Government Act at the City of Greater Geelong have been identified at this stage. All ratepayers should be made aware of council procedures and expenditures. Properly documented delegations and procedural transparency must be established and adhered to at all times. This is most obviously relevant where councillors have in the past had the discretionary capacity to allocate large financial amounts within their own wards. Super troupers need home THE good news is that in Torquay we have a secret; a rare delight we enjoy at least three times a year. Torquay Theatre Troupe continually comes up with high standard productions and performances. On Saturday night I witnessed its latest production, The Foreigner, and was, as usual, amazed at the group’s depth of talent. It was a real triumph for both the players and the audience. The bad news came next day when I observed all the shining lights of the previous evening brought back to Earth by having to embark on the physical drudgery of moving a vast amount of props and material from the show out of their temporary theatre into storage in any number of sheds or containers. This was not right. This marvellous group needs a permanent home. That it continues to produce such fine shows in temporary accommodation speaks wonders for members’ courage. Chooks created I NOTICED that Tim Saclier (Independent, 8 November) appears to have something against Christian websites. Well, I am about to disappoint him again. I believe that the biblical account of creation stands up against his Theory of Evolution. After all, it gives an eyewitness account of Jesus creating everything in perfect working order. I have DVDs that I am willing to share with Mr Saclier and anybody who is interested. They include Professor Walter Veith, a one-time university lecturer on evolution turned Christian, Dr Carl Baugh, of Glen Rose, Texas, a one-time evolutionist, and doctors Robert and David Gentry. However, these might be too technical for Mr Saclier. I also have books by Jonathan Gray that I cannot give Mr Saclier but he can find Mr Gray’s website easily. I also suggest a website on the Inspiration of the scriptures, by Ivan Panin. Mr Saclier would be surprised at the complexity. I invite Mr Saclier to phone me so we can exchange information. Incidentally, Charles Darwin was not the originator of his theory. He was preceded by his father and grandfather, who in turn got it from someone else.

Logic up in smoke LAST week the burning season for the Otways commenced at Anglesea and if weather permits there will be a whole lot more. The increased amount of burning of our native forest has come from a recommendation by the Royal Commission into the 2009 Black Saturday fires. Since then studies have shown that increased burning in our wet and damp forests does not save houses and people from the type of devastating bushfires that claimed so many lives and properties in 2009. Immediate clearing around houses does. It is nonsense that because Aborigines used to burn it’s okay for us to set alight large areas of forest using helicopters and incendiaries to create manmade bushfires in the hope we prevent a climate-induced one. Lynch, Psychos star at festival By MICHELLE HERBISON LOCAL surf legend Wayne Lynch will help kick off the inaugural Lorne Film festival this weekend discussing a new documentary about his life and career. Unchartered Waters, directed by Craig Griffin, traces Lynch’s life and career including his upbringing at Lorne and spiritual surfing journey. The film explores Lynch’s experiences as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War as well as his spiritual connection to surfing that often conflicted with both the subculture and general society. Lorne Film Festival will feature 11 Australian films alongside a string of international gems, with screenings, workshops and celebrations all weekend celebrating and nurturing film culture in the region. Aussie pub-rock royalty Cosmic Psychos will answer audience questions following the screening of Matt Weston documentary, Cosmic Psychos - Blokes You Can Trust. Filmmaking education organisation Open Channel will present a framed industry forum coinciding with the screening of family friendly comedy, Reverse Runner, produced by Colac filmmakers Lachlan Ryan and Jarrod Theodore. The film premiered at Geelong’s Village Cinemas in February after becoming Colac cinema’s “third most successful film of all time”. The movie follows the quirky

story of “slightly backwards” Kid Campbell who is a bit of an outcast until he discovers the sport of reverse running at the “Alternate Athletics”. The Lorne festival will feature nearly 30 films, both new and classic, exploring a range of genres and topics. Four venues will host the event; Lorne Theatre, Cumberland Resort and Mantra, all on Mountjoy Pde, as well as a Saturday night outdoor screening at QDOS Arts’ sculpture garden, Allenvale Rd. Lorne Film’s ambition is to lead, nurture and recognise excellence in filmmaking for those at the early stages of their careers and to celebrate film and filmmakers through their stories. The Lorne Film festival program and ticket bookings are available at lornefilm.com.au. Opening night tickets cost $60 or $50 for concession card holders and include the Unchartered Waters screening, entry into Lorne Film’s VIP opening night party, a celebration at the Mantra Convention Centre including a light banquet and drinks. MODESTY prevailed when Barry Gibb impersonator Damian Wynne met his Bee Gees idol last year at the unveiling of a tribute statue at Redcliffe, Queensland. “I didn’t want to push myself onto him too much and say, ‘Hey, I’m you’,” Wynne recalled. Gibb gave him a phone number and requested an invitation next time the Ultimate Bee Gees performed in America. But Wynne said the band’s next chance to visit the locale of the last remaining Bee Gee would be a few years off since the group’s schedule was already booked through next year. Wynee said the popular tribute show, also featuring Robert Days as Maurice Gibb and Karl Lenz as Robin Gibb, was enjoying great success with sold-out shows across the country and touring around the globe. Growing up listening to the Bee Gees’ music then taking singing lessons from John Farnham’s teacher, Jack White, helped Wynne “fall into the Barry thing” about five years ago, he said. “I really loved the music of the Bee Gees and once I started singing it I just couldn’t stop. With the right tuition and grounding, the falsetto was something I developed over a period of time.” Wynne said Staying Alive was undeniably his favourite track, filling the dance-floor every time. “We’ve had women jumping on tables and throwing undies at us. The big thing the Bee Gees had was everybody could relate to the music and

Zombies in city cheese ZOMBIE horror will meld with cheesy variety in a new Geelong stage show. GSODA Junior Players has announced its production of Showstopper will feature “frightfully frothy hosts” Steve Grisley and Scary Anne Skinnerly guiding audiences through a Creature-Monster-Zombie ComedyHorror Variety Hour. The show combines “comedy, superb vocals and infectious dancing to be performed by Geelong’s top young musical theatre talent”, the troupe said. The show, conceived and directed by Jules Hart, puts a horror twist on the cheesy variety show genre. Hart said Showstopper’s eclectic collection of music including Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, The B52s’ Planet Claire and Roy Orbison’s Crying. “See a chorus line of skeleton dream girls perform Dusty Springfield’s Spooky, a pack of werewolves perform Werewolves of London and be amazed as the dancers appear to float through the air to Queen’s Invisible Man,” Hart said.

“It’s based on the 1960s variety shows with Carol Burnett and Mickey Rooney, which combined music with hilarious skits and cheesy comedy. “We showcase the best of the kids’ talent and mash it up with the variety show format with lots of fun and frivolity. “It’s just frothy, scary fun for the whole family.” The Creature-Monster-Zombie Comedy-Horror Variety Hour is Showstopper’s second act, following on from the 1920s’ musical caper Charleston in act one. Directed by Sadat Jon Hussain, Charleston follows the adventures of 17-year-old flapper Polly Pepper whose inheritance of a famous diamond necklace leads to her getting mixed up with bootleggers, con artists and showgirls. The show will feature a cast of more than 60 performers aged 11 to 17. Geelong Performing Arts Centre hosts Showstopper at 7.30pm this Friday and at 2pm and 7.30pm Saturday.

Hotel guests and walk-in diners can feast on the restaurant’s international menu. Zenith’s chef uses a variety of local produce as he showcases the region’s quality products to tourists. General manager Phil O’Brien says a 300-gram “High Country” pork cutlet is just one of the venue’s succulent signature dishes and a diner favourite. “It’s a cut of pork exclusively available to Accor hotels,” he explains. “The herd is raised on a diet of high-quality Australian grain that’s locally grown.” The pork is served with hassle-back potatoes, steamed vegetables and a choice of sauces including red wine jus, creamy mushroom, trio of peppercorn or horseradish and chive butter. Zenith’s chef advises that the dish is best served medium. The mains menu also offers vegetarian, gluten-free and healthy-choice options, while chefs will cater to any other dietary requirements of guests. Golden Plate winners praised GEELONG’S Golden Plate Awards has celebrated its 10th anniversary year with a packed dinner to celebrate the region’s top culinary achievers. Judges awarded Geelong venue The French Corner Cafe the title of Regional Victoria’s Best Cafe. “Something has happened in Pakington Street – and it’s all good,” judges said of The French Corner. “This little slice of Paris is punching well above its weight and offering outstanding food cooked in a classic French style but treated with a contemporary, global twist. The result – French/Australian cafe food that could pass as the stuff you’d expect to find in a fine dining restaurant – only here you’ll pay a fraction of the price.” Queenscliff’s Vue Grand won the overall Golden Plate award. Judging panel president Rita Erlich said Vue Grant “would have to be one of the most impressive restaurants in regional Victoria”. “The food was outstanding, the service exceptional, and the wine list a clever showcase of quality wines.” The Judges praised the field of finalists as “outstanding”. “Some remarkable new venues are setting up shop in this neck of the woods and these venues are leading the way in hospitality in the region”. Newtown’s Winter’s Café won the coveted People’s Choice award, sponsored by the Independent. The Independent’s managing editor, Tony Galpin, said the People’s Choice category attracted 9000 reviews of Golden Plate entrants. “That’s an amazing result. The Independent is thrilled to be able to include its readers in the Golden Plate Awards.” Awards project manager Pam Jewson said the awards had come along way over the past 10 years. “We have our great judging team and fantastic sponsors to thank for that.”

NISSAN Maxima is the largest car sold in Australia by the Japanese giant. For some reason it’s frequently overlooked by those shopping in the family car scene. Maxima is about the same size as the Toyota Aurion and so isn’t a lot smaller than Commodore and Falcon. It’s well worth including on your short list. The Maxima can carry four adults and a child with ease. Five adults will fit if they don’t mind doing some squeezing up, but that applies to all cars of this size. Though it’s not quite as good on really rough corrugations as cars that are specifically built for Australian roads, it copes reasonably well with Aussie dirt roads. Ride on smooth surfaces is quiet and comfortable. Handling is softer and less responsive than that of the local sixes, but the Nissan is safe and predictable and will suit all but sports sedan enthusiasts. Nissan couldn’t seem to make up its corporate mind on how the Maxima should look; it was somewhat unusual in the pre1995 models but then went mainstream for a few years. Maxima from late 2003 then went the radical route in its shape, something that increased buyer awareness and certainly helped sales. But the 2009 model went back onto the conservative track, though it is still a handsome machine and suits many shopping in this usually conservative class. Maximas prior to the 2003 model, use a 3.0-litre V6 engine. From the 1995 model, a twin-cam 3.0 was installed. It has plenty of

The twin-cam engine is also noticeably smoother and quieter than the old singlecam one. The 2003 Maxima received an excellent 3.5-litre V6 and it’s better still. In 2009, Nissan Australia made an interesting move in introducing of a small 2.5-litre V6 as an option to the 3.5-litre unit. The smaller engine has more performance than you might expect, but traditionally buyers of sixcylinder family cars in Australia want plenty of grunt and the 2.5 may disappoint those people. Nissan Maxima is unusual in having a manual transmission option in a market that’s normally auto-only. However, the manual was only offered during 1995 and 1996 and only in the lower-cost model. This five-speed unit is not common and could be difficult to resell. Then again, if you are doing a lot of country driving where

few gear changes are required, a manual will save on fuel. The good home mechanic can do some of their own maintenance and minor repair work on older models, later ones are pretty complex in places. Underbonnet access is good but make sure you have a workshop manual before diving in too deep. The Australian Nissan dealer network is long established and works well with outlets in virtually every area, even those deep in the outback. The latter may not always keep spare parts on hand for the Maxima so you may face a wait if unlucky enough to have problems in the bush. Insurance charges, though usually higher than for Aussie family sixes, aren’t excessive. There can be a bigger than average range of premium charges so it’s smart to take time to shop around. Always have a professional do a final inspection as these are relatively complex cars and it’s easy to miss some items.

By EWAN KENNEDY A COMPACT family sedan from Malaysian manufacturer Proton, the Preve, comes downunder in two variants. The Preve GX five-speed manual and Preve GX six-speed continuously variable automatic. Incidentally, Proton would like us to pronounce Preve to rhyme with cafe so as to give the new car a European flavour. Proton Preve offers excellent value for money as it has a drive-away price of $15,990 for the five-speed manual transmission and $17,990 for the sixspeed continuously variable transmission. These prices are $3000 under the launch prices announced earlier this year. Proton tells us the prices will remain until the end of 2013. Until then you can get a Proton Preve for price of a Toyota Yaris or Mazda2, whereas it’s pretty much line ball with the larger Corolla or Mazda3. A sharply sculpted body with a wide stance and 10-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels looks good, though it doesn’t really stand out from the madding crowd in this extremely competitive market segment in Australia. Upmarket features in his low-cost car include LED projector headlights and daytime running lights. This is a good sized car and Preve has generous leg, head and shoulder room for four adult occupants. It can carry up to five if those in the rear aren’t over wide. Mum, dad and three pre-teens fit easily. Seats are covered in plush cloth and all have height adjustable headrests, with active headrests in front for added safety. The boot is already a good size and the rear seat has a 60-40 split folding function to take longer items. Hooks are positioned throughout the Preve and are ideal for clothing, bags and packages. The top of the dash panel is made of a soft touch non-reflective material. The tilt adjustable, multi-function steering wheel carries controls for the audio and Bluetooth systems as well as mobile phone. The comprehensive instrument panel has both analogue and digital instrumentation. The onboard computer indicates distance travelled between two points for up to three trips and journey time. There’s information on approximate distance to empty, instantaneous fuel consumption, total fuel used and distance travelled since the last reset. In keeping with its sporty aspirations for the new car the Preve instrument panel is illuminated in red. The audio system, with AM/FM radio, CD/MP3 player, USB and auxiliary ports, is located in the centre panel, which at its base includes the iPOD and Bluetooth ports, and a 12-volt socket hidden under a sliding cover. RED LIGHT: Preve’s instrument panel offers the driver a sporty vibe. gine is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre until, producing 80 kW at 5750 rpm and 150 Nm at 4000 rpm. Two new transmissions – a fivespeed manual or CVT automatic with six driver-selectable ratios – put power to ground through the Preve’s front wheels. A comprehensive safety package includes six airbags including fulllength curtain units. Crash prevention features include electronic stability control, traction control, ABS brakes, active front head rests, reversing sensors and speedsensitive, door locking and unlocking. Proton Preve has achieved a fivestar rating in crash testing. The ride and handling of the Preve are what you would expect from a vehicle with some Lotus input – better than average for its class. But the Preve leans in the direction of safety and comfort and is far from being a sporting model. The engine is on the dead side, which hardly comes as a surprise for its modest maximum output of 80 kilowatts, and has to be kept on song by good use of the transmission to get reasonable performance. Sparse cabin insulation lets in a harsh engine note, a necessary evil with high revving required to get the best out of an engine that doesn’t have a lot of power. The gearshift is on the rubbery side – but when it is allowed to shift at its preferred pace it isn’t too bad. The manual version we tested for the full week had petrol consumption that sat around five to seven litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway and in easy country driving. That consumption rose to nine to 11 litres in town due to the fact that the engine was working hard. You get a lot of car for a very modest price from Proton’s Preve as it competes with cars the next size up, including heavyweights like Toyota Corolla and Mazda3. It doesn’t have the style, engine performance or handling dynamics of these cars - but keep that ultra-low price in mind. Also keep in mind that the bargain price only applies till the end of 2013. IndySport Cats’ bowlers lining up Tigers GEELONG Cricket Club enjoyed a dominant victory over Fitzroy Doncaster last Saturday, with the conditions certainly working in the Cats’ favour. On an apparently bowler-friendly wicket, the Cats chose not to bat on last Saturday, instead declaring their innings closed on 7/291. That decision paid immediate dividends when Jake Reed and Marc Carson both took an early wicket each reduce the hosts to 2/8 From there it was a procession as regular wickets fell. After just 44 overs Geelong had dismissed its hosts for a measly total of 101. Carson ended up with the pick of the bowling figures, taking 4/17, although Luke Muller was nipping at his heals on 4/19.

This weekend the seventh-placed Cats welcome ninth-placed Richmond in an important game for both sides to be played over the next two Saturdays. In Geelong Cricket Association, the crucial encounter between Geelong West and Geelong City appears to be slightly favouring West after a tight first day’s play last Saturday. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Sharks would have hoped for a bright

start but the loss of gun bat Richard Oliver for just eight soon made a meal of those plans. Adam Pitts (46) showed his class as he resurrected the innings but he found little help from his middle order, City at one stage slipping to 8/125. Mark Worthington, batting at number eight, dug in and made an invaluable 36 not out but the side was dismissed in the 81st over for just 175. For Geelong West, Josh Vrboski was superb, sending down 23.2 overs for the magnificent return of 6/29. The Rams look well-placed to claim their second win of the season, the only thing perhaps standing in their way is a flurry of early wickets to Kent Agg or Adam Marsland.

Newcomb & District batted first in its division two match of the round against Thomson but failed to make the most of a decent start to be dismissed for 149 off just 54 overs. Anthony Quarrell (50) continued his good form and made a tidy half century but he had no support. Brett Anderton was the pick of the Tigers’ bowlers, claiming 5/49, while Jayden Hicks took 3/30. The Dinos had 26 overs to bowl to get themselves back in the contest and it appeared they had done just that when they reduced Thomson to 3/37, thanks mainly to some accurate bowling by Shaun Davie who took 2/16. But the Tigers steadied to finish the day’s play on 3/61, Hicks again standing up finishing on 24 not-out.

Newcomb & District’s only hope tomorrow will be early wickets to Davie or paceman Richard Stanyon. In division three, Little River achieved the rare feat of winning outright on the first day over North Shore. It was Redbacks’ skipper Nathan Kenyon who was the star of the day, claiming 5/9 in the first innings and 4/12 in the second as the Seagulls were dismissed for just 55 and 38 respectively. Patience and planning pay off for weathered anglers ‘I can improve’, UNFAVOURABLE weather forced anglers to rely on persistence and forethought over the past week. Salmon were taken inside Lorne’s Louttit Bay from the rocks on the high tides. Garry Wellington spun up over 20 last weekend, most just over 1kg. Guy Stevens also used lure at the same location to catch a dozen quality salmon in around two hours. Black Rock fished well for snapper when the weather settled. Quality salmon were caught in the Barwon River estuary. Noel Jeffries landed fish over 1kg on soft plastics just near the Ozone Jetty but lost many others due to his light tackle. Patrick Lee fished the entrance to Swan Bay with a liberal berley trail to boat a variety of species including garfish, flathead, salmon and whiting. Snapper captures were generally down but some big fish were still taken at Wilson Spit, off the quarries and close in at Bird Rock. Dean Sterling fished Stingaree Bay’ spoil grounds on Saturday night for a catch of three snapper over 5kg, which he returned. Ben McLean and Mick Moore managed a pair of magnificent fish from off the quarries. Ben said that, as usual, he landed the largest of the two. Peter Green spun the Geelong waterfront between Cunningham Pier and Royal Geelong Yacht Club where he caught plenty of pike to 1m on small metal laser lures. Peter said the action was busiest close to dark. Pike were also available from the rocks at North Shore, with Grant Strom landing two or three during most sessions when using small metal lures. Danny Spikers fished the Erskine River at Lorne, eventually catching a pair of bream weighing 1.2kg each. Mario Baron targeted eel, landing a dozen to 2kg from the Barwon River below Breakwater with worms for bait. West Barwon Reservoir’s main rock wall produced trout of more than 2kg on deep-diving bibbed lures. Trout of almost 2kg were taken from Moorabool Reservoir, with fly anglers doing well on small brown nymphs. Stuart McKenzie braved the elements at Lismore’s Lake Tooliorook where he caught and lost one fish in three hours of trolling. Then he anchored close to the weed beds to fish with mudeyes for a catch of three fish to 3.2kg. Stingaree Bay’s spoil grounds or close to the channel at Alcoa should be productive for snapper early this weekend, while freshwater enthusiasts should try Lakes Wendouree or Tooliorook with mudeyes or shallowrunning bibbed lures such as Laydown and Cranka minnows. VETERAN AFL recruit James Podsiadly insists he can improve at Adelaide rather than just fill in for injured forward Taylor Walker. The AFL says the former Geelong forward made his way to West Lakes last month after booting 169 goals for the Cats from 83 games, including the 2011 premiership. With an exact date for Walker’s return from a knee reconstruction unknown and other tall option Josh Jenkins still recovering from ankle surgery, Podsiadly’s presence will be crucial to the Crows’ forward line for the early stages of the 2014 season. “Whatever I’ve done over the last couple of years at Geelong, I want to be a better player at Adelaide,” Podsiadly told AFL.com.au “I’ve got to go against the trend. I know physically and mentally I’m right but just learning the game is where I think I can improve and take my game forward. “I don’t know what a 32-year-old footballer is supposed to feel like, but from what I’ve been told I don’t feel like that. “I’m not here to fill spots or fill numbers, I’m hopefully here to make an impact.” Podsiadly said he was in good physical shape after the training session on Monday morning with Adelaide’s young players. Coach Brenton Sanderson has previously said he expected the key forward’s workload to be reduced from 2013, after he played 23 games for the Cats this season. Sanderson predicted Podsiadly could expect to notch up 20 to 25 games during his two-year deal. But Podsiadly said he was capable of and was preparing himself to play every game next year. “The club could have a whole heap of injuries and if you’re not prepared to play 25 games after a pre-season you’re almost letting the team down.”
