Design has no boundaries MELBOURNE-BASED designer Adam Cornish is among a small handful of Australians to join the Alessi’s design encyclopaedia with the launch of his Trinity bowl for the Italian design company. Representing Australia on the international design landscape, Trinity was launched earlier this month in Alessi’s ‘Fall/Winter 2013 Collection’. Trinity has been a few years in the making: from the initial sketches and drawings on paper, through to renderings and various revised prototypes which underwent vigorous product testing and manufacturing. The final outcome is a beautifully constructed centrepiece that is inspired by the spiral structure of the Nautilus mollusk sea shell. “Every year, another chamber is added to the highly characteristic structure of the Nautilus shell, producing a beautiful, durable and lightweight spiral,” says Alessi founder and managing director Alberto Alessi. “The young Australian designer’s intent was to blend the beauty of a natural structure with modern manufacturing processes,” he says. “It has been my dream to

Australian product and design innovation are all a part of the mix and de-
sign is now global,” Adam says. “International distribution means designers don’t have to leave Australian shores to work for international companies.” Alongside his international launch with Alessi, Adam has recently launched his own Stoneware Lighting Range on home soil under his design studio Adam Cornish Design. Rose show in full bloom THE concept of a State Rose Garden arose when Victoria was declared The Garden State, in 1976. The unique design of the garden features a stylised five-petalled Tudor Rose, and beds of Hybrid Tea and Floribunda roses. The largest display area at the northern end of the site and pathways act as a rose ‘stem’, leading from the Tudor Rose petals, to a ‘leaf’ and a ‘rosebud’. The ‘leaf’, called the Federation Leaf, was planted to commemorate the Centenary of Federation in 2001. It contains beds of Australian roses bred over the period of Federation. The “rosebud” is planted with English Roses bred by David Austin. Awarded the International Garden of Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 2003, the Victoria State Rose Garden was the first rose garden outside of Europe to receive this Award and the only one (at that time) cared for entirely by volunteers. Vasili’s Gardening Vasili has over 20 years’ experience in the gardening industry. His passion started as a young boy helping his folks around the vegie patch every day after school. Not only did gardening the natural way become a part of his everyday lifestyle, eating healthy fresh produce was just as important too. Vasili’s simpler approach to a healthier lifestyle is being spread through the homes of many Australian families. Chooktopia Ella Boyen is an Al Gore-trained Climate Ambassador and animal lover. A self-described environmental realist, Ella has spent the last 15 years working and volunteering in the environmental field. She moonlights by night as a wildlife tour guide, and is the founder of “Chooktopia”.

Council ratings improve
FOOTSCRAY West Primary School put on an art show with a difference last week. Students across all year levels spent the year creating a range of art works, sculptures and props for the school’s biennial art extravaganza. This year, audience members were given a mission to find the secret friends that helped out famous artists Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Tom Roberts and Henri Rousseau on some of their most popular works. After being put in the shrinking chair, the audience walked into 3-D versions of each painting in a bid to piece the clues together. MARIBYRNONG residents are happier with their lot, according to Maribyrnong City Council’s most recent Annual Community Survey. The council received its highest ever community satisfaction rating in 2013, receiving a score of 6.83 out of 10 to be the highest rated council across the West. Residents were asked to rate 32 of the council’s services and facilities, with an average satisfaction rate of 7.16 out of 10, up from 7.12 the previous year. Residents said they were happiest with their weekly garbage collection, local library services, services for seniors and children and regular recycling. On the flip side, residents were less than impressed with the maintenance and cleaning of Footscray’s CBD, public toilets, parking enforcement and footpath and road maintenance and repairs. Respondents rated traffic management, safety and crime, car parking, lighting, and parks, gardens and open space as the top issues facing the council. Meanwhile, nearly a quarter
(24.3 per cent) of respondents correctly identified Catherine Cumming as the 2013 Mayor, up from 15.2 per cent in 2012 when John Cumming was Mayor. Newly-elected Mayor Grant Miles said the council had consistently improved in its Annual Community Surveys since CEO Vince Haining took the helm in 2010. Cr Miles said Mr Haining’s focus on customer service and addressing the asset maintenance backlog had made Maribyrnong a more streamlined, accessible council. “Generally, it’s very good news. All the pointers are up, and we have the best ratings out of the West of Melbourne,” Cr Miles said. “There has been a concerted effort to focus on community happiness. It’s important to know what the community are thinking, and this is the best way to find out. “We’ll learn from it - there’s always more work to be done.” The report was conducted by Metropolis Research and involved face-to-face interviews with 800 City of Maribyrnong residents. Information from the survey is then used to set a priority list for works in the annual council budget.

BANH Chung during the Lunar New Year is what pudding is to Christmas. The traditional Vietnamese cake is an important element in every family’s celebration of Tet, the Lunar New Year - and it is now also the essential ingredient of artist Chi Vu’s latest offering at the Footscray Community Arts Centre. The Banh Chung installation, which will run as part of the Big West Festival, features award-winning stage and screen actor Amanda Ma in a sculptural environment created by international visual artist Naomi Ota, with sound design by Bendigo-based Jacques Soddell. A small group of audience
members are invited into the space at 20-minute intervals to watch and smell the preparation of the Banh Chung cake, while also listening to a number of sound plays through head phones. “It started out as this straight theatre play ... but I thought there’s something about that that doesn’t match what we’re saying in the contents of the piece, which is about what it feels like to be living right here in Australia, but also feeling connected to the country you come from,” Ms Vu said. “It’s this sense of being both over here and over there.” Ironically, Ms Vu did not know how to make Banh Chung herself when she first started writing the piece.
“Not many people know how to make it anymore, most people just buy it. “I had to find a woman who used to run a restaurant and knew how to make it and track her down and I asked her to teach me and the visual artist Naomi, how to make it. “It’s this kind of knowledge that’s disappearing in some ways. The day before, you have to soak some of the ingredients, and then you have to put it together and it’s like doing origami. “It takes at least six hours to boil, so it’s this full-on arduous task that you would do as a family to hang out socially.” Banh Chung starts Thursday and will run until 25 November. The exhibition opens daily from 1pm to 8pm.

THE Maidstone Hall will be demolished and two tennis courts refurbished in a $630,000 revamp of the site. Maribyrnong City Council last week approved a draft plan to revive the Federation-era tennis pavilion and two tennis courts. A public park with seating, trees, shrubs and lawn areas is also on the cards. The site, which used to belong to the Brimbank City Council, houses a Meals on Wheels kitchen, child care centre and tennis courts. The yellow-brick Maidstone Hall has been largely disused since 1999 and the pavilion since 2007. The council will also demolish the existing community hall after a council report found it would cost more than $1 million to return it to its former glory. Mayor Grant Miles said the plan followed an extensive community consultation process. The consultation showed a range of community desires for the site, including creating a public park, retaining the tennis courts and pavilion and providing a building for use as community meeting space. “This site hasn’t been used since 2007 and we want to open it up to the community,” Cr Miles said. “The plan we are putting out for community feedback is to preserve a heritage building for community use and create a new public park in Maidstone. “This is a great opportunity to create some new open space for Maidstone.” Cr Miles said the redevelopment is expected to take about two years. The draft plan will be available on the council’s website from 27 November. The council will also host an information session on 2 December from 6pm to 8pm at the Johnson Reserve Pavilion.
A CONVICTED drug trafficker caught with nearly 200 grams of heroin has had his appeal quashed. Nhat Hoang has been ordered to see out his six-year prison sentence after the Supreme Court’s Court of Appeal denied his request for a more lenient punishment. On 21 May 2011, police came across Hoang doing something to the air filter of a car which was pulled over to the side of the road in Braybrook. On examination police found a parcel with 199 grams of heroin in rock form and $2475 in cash. According to court documents, Hoang readily admitted to acting as a drug courier to fund a life-long heroin addiction and pleaded guilty to trafficking a drug of dependence and dealing with property reasonably suspected of being the proceeds of crime. Hoang told police the street value of the heroin was around $20,000, but a police informant estimated the street value to be closer to $64,000 and $85,000. He was sentenced to six years’ jail, with a fixed non-parole period of four years. Earlier this year, Hoang launched an appeal after new evidence about the purity of the heroin came to light.

Festive spirit spawned By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE silly season is set to go off with a bang in the City of Maribyrnong. Maribyrnong City Council has unveiled its Christmas Festival program, which includes a range of free family events and new decorations displayed at key locations across the municipality. The program kicks off next week with mayor Grant Miles turning on the Town Hall Christmas tree lights
at a twilight event that also includes a craft market, children’s activities, carollers and refreshments. The municipality will be decorated with festive banners, a light and art installation in Footscray’s Nicholson Street Mall and festive decorations across all of council’s civic facilities. The festive season calendar also includes Twilight Movie Nights across parks and gardens in Maribyrnong, West Footscray, Maidstone
and Yarraville, roving carollers, community barbecues and a kids’ pool party at Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre. The jewel in the crown will be the New Year’s Eve party and fireworks display at Footscray Park. The family friendly event will feature stage acts, carnival games, food and fireworks at 9.30pm. All events are alcohol free, and dog owners are advised to leave their pooch at home.
Cr Miles said the Christmas Festival program was an extension of the council’s Festival City agenda. “The festive season is a time for us to celebrate with family, neighbours and friends, he said. “Council’s festive season program is all about bringing our community together and offering some fantastic free events for the whole family to enjoy. For all event details, visit www. festivalcity.com.au

Hair shaved for Typhoon Haiyan victims By CHARLENE MACAULAY IN TWO week’s time, Klyde Salcedo’s long locks will be shaved off in the name of charity. The 28-year-old will go completely bald on 30 November with the help of Footscray’s Blue Phoenix Hair Design, and aims to raise $5000 for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which has affected more than
9.5 million people in the Phillipines. She’s also hoping to rope in a couple of friends. “I thought about doing a Miley Cyrus cut, but it’s the whole deal, Ms Salcedo said. “I have long-ish hair, so it’s going to be weird to be bald - but it’s for a good cause. “The typhoon has affected about 9.5 million people, and I think it’s
risen. My family’s been fortunate enough that they haven’t been hit, because they live in the North, but the whole of the Philippines is affected regardless. The owner of Blue Phoenix Hair Design, Angeli Shaw, is also personally invested in the cause - she was holidaying in the Philippines when the typhoon hit and was lucky to catch a flight home.
In addition to the shave, Ms Salcedo plans to do mission work in the Philippines next year. “I’m also trying to get off the ground a not-for-profit organisation that actually focuses on rebuilding communities overseas. To donate, go to http://donate. worldvision.org/ or call World Vision on 1300 300 313 and use ID number 813333424 as a reference.
Get ready for the Spring Racing Carnival and the coming social season. Now is the time to have your anti-wrinkle injections. Westmed Cosmetic Medicine is offering anti-wrinkle injections at the 50% discount price of $11 per unit for the months of September, October and November.

THE Maribyrnong Truck Action Group blocked traffic along Somerville Rd last week to call for truck curfews during school crossing hours. Police barricaded Somerville Rd just before 8am last Tuesday between Williamstown Rd and Julian St in a half-hour peaceful protest in front of Kingsville Primary School. Maribyrnong City Council mayor Grant Miles, fellow councillor Michael Clarke and Greens MLC Colleen Hartland also joined the rally. Cr Miles said the State Government needed to act immediately to stop the growing number of trucks going through residential streets. “I don’t want my 10-year-old son to be run over by a truck,” he said. “It’s a recipe for disaster, 10-year-olds and Bdoubles do not mix.” MTAG president Samantha McArthur said around 3000 trucks a day use Somerville Rd as a rat run to the Port of Melbourne. Ms McArthur said three schools and a childcare centre were located along Somerville Rd, causing fear among parents that let their children walk to and from school. “Our children’s health and safety is at risk while VicRoads and Government are doing nothing about this problem,” Ms McArthur said. “It is fantastic to see the council really fighting for residents’ rights. “We should not have to worry that they might be bowled over by one of these massive trucks, and the trucks should be on Citylink. It’s a ridiculous situation. “We’ve got to say enough is enough - wake up (Premier) Dr Napthine, smell the diesel.” Primary school student Edith added: “There are too many big trucks on Somerville Rd and they make it very noisy and polluted.” Maribyrnong City Council has been pushing VicRoads to ban trucks from using Somerville Rd between 8am to 9.30am and 3pm to 4.30pm on school days since May.VicRoads has since agreed to investigate curfews during school crossing times, but action has yet to be taken.

Creative sewing BEING a working mum with two small kids has not stopped Jane Pipke from tapping into her creative side. If anything, her two young ones have inspired a whole new business. The Yarraville resident, who works in marketing, has also created an extensive range of children’s clothes and toys for her children’s brand Lil Pip. “I learned to sew when I was at school,” Ms Pipke said.
“But I didn’t really get back into sewing in this way until I had my daughter four years ago.” Her first product was the Bobook Owl - a flat fabric owl toy for babies, which she still creates in a variety of colours and fabrics. As Ms Pipke’s product range grew, she moved into children’s clothing and more toys. Her early lines were heavy on girly products, so Jane made a concerted effort to produce toy designs and clothes for baby boys, using her son as
inspiration and model. “Seven-year-old boys are quite discerning in the fashion sense, so my son has given me lots of feedback on the T-shirts I have created,” Ms Pipke said. And Ms Pipke said her day job meant she was never far away from her target market. “My desire to communicate doesn’t switch off when I leave work, I just shift focus to Lil Pip. “I love the sense of community created around social media - it provides
brands with instant engagement with their customers which was unheard of years ago.” Ms Pipke has also engaged with her local community as a stallholder and committee member for the Maribyrnong Makers Market. The Maribyrnong Makers Market will host a bumper pre-Christmas Market this Saturday from 9.30am to 3.30pm at two sites: Harris Reserve, and the corner of Gamon and Mackay streets.

By CHARLENE MACAULAY JUMPING around has never been more fun - or educational. Yarraville Special Development School students are the proud new owners of a custommade iJump trampoline that develops balance, confidence and core strength. The iJump trampoline was created by Year 10 students at Presentation College Windsor, who worked in collaboration with Victoria University as part of the Engineering Students at Work program. Students have attached a device to the trampoline that registers when children jump on it and rewards them with various sounds, words of encouragement, and music, all recorded by the children themselves. Using the iJump helps the Yarraville Special Development School students develop balance, confidence and core strength in the children, many of whom have intellectual and physical disabilities. VU’s School of Engineering lecturer John Chlond said the Presentation College students did a week of intensive engineering training and work experience while producing the working prototype of the iJump. Mr Chlond said the Engineering Students at Work partnership exposed high school students to the benefits of engineering, while helping children in the community. “The final handover of these projects to the Special Developmental schools is always an exciting and emotional experience; seeing young people helping other young people is

Melbourne and surrounding areas switch on 10 December 2013* The analog TV switch off is happening on 10 December 2013* – and there’s no turning back. After this date you won’t see anything if you’re not ready for digital-only TV.
What do I have to do? Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.
Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

Symbolic gifts to mark milestones THE tradition of giving specific anniversary gifts based on the number of years a couple has been married dates back to the Middle Ages. Opinions differ on how the custom came about. Some think it probably has underlying it a belief in the correspondence of certain luck-bringing substances with a distinct number of years while others say it marks a deepening of the couple’s
commitment, an accumulation of time irreplaceable. To help celebrate these occasions are special gifts, one assigned to each anniversary and each with its own material and symbolic value. Some of the gifts might seem a little strange at first, as it’s doubtful most men will shriek with delight should they receive a gift of lace or china. But despite a few head-
scratching selections, the list features a range of helpful, thoughtful and diverse gift ideas that can serve as a jumping-off point for shopping ventures. Regardless of whether you feel this gift list is dated and archaic or classic and hip, couples can enjoy learning how it came into favour in the first place. On making it 365 days as a newlywed couple, everyday life is hectic and it is more im-

portant than ever to “smell the roses” and appreciate the person who is travelling through life with you. You have a long road ahead of you and there will be ups and downs, but you can demonstrate your love each anniversary by giving a meaningful, traditional gift. The first traditional anniversary gift is paper and the modern gift is a clock. The 10th wedding anniversary nowadays calls for the most distinct gemstone yet, the diamond. The traditional gift is tin or aluminium. Traditionally, a china gift is given on the 20th anniversary with platinum being the modern twist for this occasion. The milestone that every married couple strives for is 50 years of marriage. We congratulate each and every couple that reaches this milestone. Gold is the precious metal associated with the 50th wedding anniversary. With 60 years of marriage behind you, there is very little that you have not seen. This is a great time to sit back and reflect on the time you have spent together, the accomplishments you have achieved and the happiness you have shared with others. Celebrate with diamonds to mark this beautiful milestone.

A weekly roast night including dessert is also offered at an affordable price for our residents. Enjoy some quiet time in the
library browsing through our wide selection of books, CDs and videos or search the Internet for that bargain on the free internet service available to residents in the library or print off that document with the printer provided. Your free personal trainer provided to the residents at our fully equipped gymnasium can organise a training schedule for
you if you wish. The residents enjoy many fun activities at Palm Lake Truganina also including table tennis, carpet bowls, bingo and bus trips in our resort bus organised by the social club and residents. Draft wildcard Cat to coach shorts
By ADEM SARICAOGLU
JAMES Sicily emerged as the Western Jets’ leading AFL draft candidate during the 2013 season. Across 16 games for the Jets in the TAC Cup this year, the 18-year-old Keilor product regularly featured among the standouts and managed to kick 26 goals, 11 of which came from a four-game burst through April and May. His form and promise was good enough to warrant selection for Vic Metro in the national championships, where Sicily averaged 14 disposals and seven marks. But it wasn’t Sicily’s ability to generate numbers that has led to his emergence as one of the real wildcards in this Thursday’s draft. Rather, it’s the wide variety of boxes he ticks both as an athlete and a natural footballing mind that has Jets coach Torin Baker confident Sicily will get to an AFL club this summer. “I think he’ll have a successful AFL career,” Baker said. “He can play a variety of roles at AFL level. “He’s kicked nearly 30 goals in the TAC Cup this year which shows he’s good around goal, so I think he’ll probably start as a forward and further into his career he’ll be able to play a midfield role.” It remains somewhat of a mystery just where Sicily is best suited on the field.
Most of those who should know best believe his strong overhead ability makes Sicily a formidable key forward option, while others are well aware of the value he brings into the midfield. Sicily himself isn’t entirely sure where he fits best, but he does have a preference. “With the Jets I was playing in a key forward role, which I’d never played previously,” Sicily said. “But I do see myself as a midfielder more than a forward.” Baker regards Sicily more as a highly versatile utility. “He’s a high forward that has the capabilities to really hurt you with his marking strength, but in saying that I really think one of his strengths is he’s just such a versatile player,” Baker said. “He can play on the wing, he showed he can play an inside role and I’ve got confidence that he could play as a half back flanker or something like that as well.” Not originally noted for his speed, Sicily surprised everyone at last month’s national draft combine with a 2.84-second 20-metre sprint - the fourth best overall. All that remains now is the nerve-racking reveal of whether an AFL club is willing to enlist his services for 2014 and beyond. “I’m quite excited at the moment but the nerves will definitely kick in come the day of the draft,” Sicily said. “I think I’ve done enough (to get drafted), but there’s still that element of doubt as well.”
Draft Watch James Sicily DOB: 06/01/1995 Junior club: Keilor d Position: Midfielder/Forward 2013 Average Disposals: 19.13 (16 games) Torin Baker says: “He’s a high forward that has the capabilities to really hurt you with his marking strength, but in saying that I really think that one of his strengths is he’s just such a versatile player.”

Jets fly alternate routes By ADEM SARICAOGLU
Johnny Rayner in action for the Western Jets back in 2009. 30808 Picture: SARAH MATRAY
WESTERN Jets region manager Shane Sexton has been pleased to see the increased progress of footballers seeking alternate pathways into the AFL in recent years. New Essendon recruit Johnny Rayner recently added his name to the growing list of former Western Jets who eventually found their way onto an AFL list despite being overlooked at the draft. In another promising sign, Brett Bewley, Jake McKenzie, Harley Walshe and Lachie Hickey, all Jets in 2013, have been snapped up by Williamstown in the VFL. But while Sexton acknowledges the recent influx of mature-aged recruits has made it harder for kids to enter the AFL system through the traditional draft pathway, he still believes the majority of new recruits will come out of the under-18 system. “I think clubs are still looking for guys that can play league footy,” Sexton said.
“Sure, the readymade players are going to be a bit more advanced than the 18-year-olds these days, but the bulk of the kids are still going to come out of under-age footy and particularly the TAC Cup.” Three Western Jets from the class of 2013 look to be in the running for a chance to land on an AFL list during this coming draft period, which begins with this Thursday’s national draft on the Gold Coast. Leading the Jets charge will be versatile utility James Sicily, who offers a strong mix of physical ability and footballing know-how on the park. “James is a very talented player, and very skilful,” Sexton said. “He’s got the capacity to do things out of the ordinary and does it regularly. “At different times during the year he proved he can go through the midfield, clearly he can go forward and be really dangerous, he’s exceptional overhead, he’s a good kick and he’s got a terrific capacity to read the game.”
The Jets’ only other Vic Metro representative in 2013, Jake Greiser, also has plenty to offer as an inside midfield option, according to Sexton. “He’s right up there and he’s really good with his hands, which made him quicker in that sense,” Sexton said. “His attitude and application to the task at hand is first rate, so he ticks a lot of boxes as well.” However, Williamstown product David Iaccarino looms as the great unknown of the Jets’ class of 2013. Iaccarino was clearly the Jets’ best player in 2013, but persistent shoulder problems meant he missed out on both Vic Metro selection and an invitation to October’s draft combines. “He’s very well known in draft circles,” Sexton insists. “Many of the recruiters that I’ve spoken to know what he can do and have witnessed it. “So I’d be hopeful for David that he finds his way to an AFL club as well.”
WERRIBEE has added former Geelong star Peter Riccardi to its coaching panel for next season. Riccardi played 288 games for the Cats in a long and distinguished career. After his playing days finished he turned to coaching in the Geelong Football League and led North Shore last season. The good news doesn’t stop there for Werribee. The club also welcomes dual North Ballarat VFL premiership player Jacob Spolding to the role of forward line coach while Keenan Reynolds will look after the back-line in 2014. In other coaching changes, Chris Gilham has moved into the role of opposition coach, Michael McMaster will be the senior match day runner. He will also assist in player development and former player Phil O’Keefe returns to the club as coach of the Development League team, taking over from Scott Korczynski. “We thank the outgoing coaches Scott K, Michael Pisani and Tim Ruffles (also a player), for their contribution to the club,” Werribee coach John Lamont said. “I am really pleased with the coaching group we have assembled, with our players being the obvious beneficiaries.” AFTER several race cancellations due to Melbourne’s wet spring weather, riders finally got to the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU/FCC Sports Criterium Track in Hoppers Crossing with four sensational races to enjoy. A-Grade’s windy race was dominated by a two-man breakaway from the start of the race, with Target Trek rider Dom Dudkiewicz taking off with French international rider Mathieu Delaroziere. The bunch was just unable to bring the pair back as they built up an insurmountable lead. Melton resident Dudkiewicz rode particularly well, considering the month of illness he has had. “This is my first crit since coming back from a bad dose of the flu,” he said. “This is the first time in weeks I’ve gone above 30km an hour. “I attacked from the start. Myself and the international rider (Delaroziere) broke away on the third lap and the two of us worked hard for the whole race,” Dudkiewicz said. “There was no real cat-and-mouse between us. On the last lap I got on the front and was first wheel around the last corner. I didn’t know if he could sprint and I kicked at the corner and realised I had it.” The bunch kick for third was taken out by returning rider Stuart Grimsey. Dudkiewicz is looking forward to a better run of luck coming into the summer action. “I want to start building up now and hit it hard for the Bay Crits and, if the form is good enough, the nationals,” he said. CAROLINE Springs is in a strong position to beat Williamstown Imperials in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A-Grade Matting competition this Saturday. After choosing to bat first on its home deck at Town Centre Oval, the home team got off to a good start with openers Darren Arandez (32) and Burhan Butt (14) providing 42 runs for the first drop. At number three Jack Taylor then came in to provide another 44, while Warwick Jaensch’s unbeaten 36 from number eight also proved handy for Caroline Springs, which has set the Imps 205 for victory this weekend. In other matches taking place in the division, Wyndham Vale needs another 90 runs for victory over Seabrook, while Melton South Primary School is in for a big day this Saturday, needing to chase down the WLSC Marshalls’ 9/251. At Blackwood Reserve, Point Cook is 1/23, chasing Melton Centrals’ 159.

Local clubs in spending spree THE Deer Park Football club has certainly not sat on its hands since winning the WRFL Division One Grand final in September. Last week another major recruiting coup with the signing of former Bulldogs defender Ryan Hargrave and ex-GWS and Carlton player Bret Thornton. This on top of signing dual Hawthorn premiership player Brent Guerra. Social media went nuts about local footy being ruined by the almighty dollar but while there is no salary cap, points or workable system to even the competition this is always going to happen. You can’t blame a club for attracting sponsorship dollars and then spending it on players. I have no problem with that, as long as the club remains committed to junior development as well, because that is the future of clubs and the game. I hope rival clubs don’t make the mistake of spending money that they don’t have in order to be competitive. Another former Bulldog and Port Melbourne premiership player Wayde Skipper has joined Hoppers Crossing. “Skip” is a great bloke and will be a great addition to the Warriors on and off the field.
Yarraville’s Elizabeth Round, Adam Vergis and Leon Whitfield are preparing to celebrate the Yarraville Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI Tennis Club’s 100th anniversary. 109631 eight-year-old,” Jones said. “I can show you the records that he and his father were members from 1986 to 1991. They used the courts as a training facility.” After a brilliant first 100 years, there are no plans to slow down at Yarraville with the club going from strength to strength. “Our facilities are in excellent condition and I think people appreciate that,” Jones said.
“Going back over the last 10 years, we converted two of our courts to hard courts and this included the installation of a water tank. All our courts are now floodlit as well. “There has been a substantial growth in the number of players in the past year,” he said. “That has given us a record level of membership. That is really going against the trend of tennis really. We
finished the year with 320 members plus another 30 players who are playing socially and are not required to be members.” The Yarraville Tennis Club will be celebrating its 100-year anniversary in the New Year. The club is seeking any photos or memorabilia from past players or members. Anyone who can help is encouraged to contact the club via email: Yarravilletc@iprimus.com.au

PLENTY of movement in local VFL footy as well with Werribee adding former Geelong star Peter Riccardi and dual North Ballarat premiership player Jacob Spolding to its coaching panel. Former player Phil O’Keeffe takes on the role of Development coach and Michael McMaster a 1993 premiership player is the senior runner. At Williamstown for 2007 Gerry Callahan Medallist Ben Davies is back from the bush and former Western Jet Sean Tighe is back from WA. The two teams will meet in a pre season game on Saturday 8 March at a venue to be announced. THIS Thursday night the AFL National Draft will determine the sporting and professional future of about 60 young men who will be brought into the AFL system. The problem is about 200 more will miss out on their dream and while many will get picked up in the rookie draft for many the dream is over. Imagine that? Hopefully the ones not drafted are not lost to the game and will continue to try to make it happen through VFL football. While professional sport appears to be a wonderful lifestyle, truth is it is a ruthless business these days. For every Brad Johnson, Rohan Smith and Doug Hawkins who play 300 games there are hundreds who never play one. THOSE players at McLean Reserve bottom oval last weekend playing for or against Spotswood Fourths were girt by Schibechis. Well known SEN broadcaster and the Voice of the “G” Tony Schibeci was joined by two of his sons, Daniel and Brayden in the whites for the Woodsmen. The boys made their contribution each taking two wickets but for Tony it was not a great day - he scored a duck. The game ended in a tie. The Ashes starting this week means cricket is back in a big way. DON’T forget the Ashes Dinner with Rodney Hogg on Wednesday 27 November at Werribee Sports Club. Book through Janelle on 9741 9862. IT IS celebration time at the Yarraville Tennis Club. But a loud cry of “c’mon” isn’t going to cut it for this amazing milestone. In the coming months, Yarraville will celebrate its 100th birthday. Committee member Ken Jones, who has been involved at the club since 1946, said it was a great feeling to arrive at the impressive landmark. “Over the years we have had a lot of very good club members and committee people that have enabled us to maintain our high standard,” he said. “Currently we have a very good coach (Adam Vergis). He is well respected by the youngsters and also the parents. He has been great for the club. “Because we maintain a high standard of facilities, I think the short to medium term is looking very good,” Jones said. “We will always continue to provide tennis for the community and we will welcome any new members.” Throughout its 100-year history, there has been plenty of exciting talent walk through the club’s gates but it is hard to go past Australian Davis Cup hero Mark Philippoussis as the standout. “The Scud” began his career at the club, playing as a junior before going on to make two grand slam singles finals. He also peaked with a world ranking of eight in 1999. “Mark started with us as an
