Design has no boundaries MELBOURNE-BASED designer Adam Cornish is among a small handful of Australians to join the Alessi’s design encyclopaedia with the launch of his Trinity bowl for the Italian design company. Representing Australia on the international design landscape, Trinity was launched earlier this month in Alessi’s ‘Fall/Winter 2013 Collection’. Trinity has been a few years in the making: from the initial sketches and drawings on paper, through to renderings and various revised prototypes which underwent vigorous product testing and manufacturing. The final outcome is a beautifully constructed centrepiece that is inspired by the spiral structure of the Nautilus mollusk sea shell. “Every year, another chamber is added to the highly characteristic structure of the Nautilus shell, producing a beautiful, durable and lightweight spiral,” says Alessi founder and managing director Alberto Alessi. “The young Australian designer’s intent was to blend the beauty of a natural structure with modern manufacturing processes,” he says. “It has been my dream to

Australian product and design innovation are all a part of the mix and de-
sign is now global,” Adam says. “International distribution means designers don’t have to leave Australian shores to work for international companies.” Alongside his international launch with Alessi, Adam has recently launched his own Stoneware Lighting Range on home soil under his design studio Adam Cornish Design. Sea of roses drowns garden SET among 5000 roses in bloom, the first annual State Rose and Garden Show will provide a fabulous day out for gardening enthusiasts and those who simply enjoy a day out in the park. The Victoria State Rose Garden at Werribee Park will come alive on Sunday 1 December 2013 with an array of stallholders, exhibitors and demonstrations on offer - all within the grounds of Victoria’s most spectacular floral display. Rose show in full bloom THE concept of a State Rose Garden arose when Victoria was declared The Garden State, in 1976. The unique design of the garden features a stylised five-petalled Tudor Rose, and beds of Hybrid Tea and Floribunda roses. The largest display area at the northern end of the site and pathways act as a rose ‘stem’, leading from the Tudor Rose petals, to a ‘leaf’ and a ‘rosebud’. The ‘leaf’, called the Federation Leaf, was planted to commemorate the Centenary of Federation in 2001. It contains beds of Australian roses bred over the period of Federation. The “rosebud” is planted with English Roses bred by David Austin. Awarded the International Garden of Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 2003, the Victoria State Rose Garden was the first rose garden outside of Europe to receive this Award and the only one (at that time) cared for entirely by volunteers. Vasili’s Gardening Vasili has over 20 years’ experience in the gardening industry. His passion started as a young boy helping his folks around the vegie patch every day after school. Not only did gardening the natural way become a part of his everyday lifestyle, eating healthy fresh produce was just as important too. Vasili’s simpler approach to a healthier lifestyle is being spread through the homes of many Australian families. Chooktopia Ella Boyen is an Al Gore-trained Climate Ambassador and animal lover. A self-described environmental realist, Ella has spent the last 15 years working and volunteering in the environmental field. She moonlights by night as a wildlife tour guide, and is the founder of “Chooktopia”.

With a combined 70 years’ kitchen experience and knowledge, the management and team know what works to make the kitchen process easy. The Kitchen Shack based showroom has already proven

Our supermum “Mum kept signing herself out of hospital or running away from the hospital and hitch-hiking home,” she said. Joyce remembers getting a call from one of the children and leaving the hospital with both legs in a cast and stopping traffic to get home to check on their welfare. “I nominated Mum because she’s done so much for us and suffered such a lot, but she still has a very good sense of humour and we’ve all grown up well,” Pauline said. “Our life would have been so totally different without Mum. We would have been spilt up and fostered out.” Mrs Evans raised her children without government assistance, finding a

job at a local café, where she worked with both legs still in plaster. “My brother use to come with his bike, she’d sit on the bars and get pushed home,” Pauline said. Pauline said it was “a huge struggle but she still managed to smile and give us a happy childhood.” Joyce said she was humbled for the nomination but insists she just did her best as a mother. “I don’t think I’m that wonderful but I did the best I could.” “The children were marvellous.” This Laverton supermum is also a supernan with 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren with another baby on the way.

AS A MUM Joyce Evans was faced with tragic circumstances but stopped at nothing to provide for her family and keep them together. The 86-year-old was nominated by daughter Pauline Rimmer as a contender for the Protect-A-Bed’s national search for Australia’s Own Supermum, and with good reason. The Laverton local known in the community as ‘Rockie’, immigrated to Australia from England with four children on 29 April 1959. Her husband Rowland had arrived a year earlier with one child. Exactly one year to the day in 1960, they decided to celebrate their anniver-
sary to Australia with a night out. The couple was returning home along Epsom Rd, Flemington when a truck hit their car - leaving them pinned inside. Tragically, Rowland was killed and Joyce suffered severe injuries including a fractured skull and jaw and broken legs. Sadly, she was also now a young widow with five children under 12 years - Chris, Norman, Colin, Patricia and Pauline. Youngest daughter Pauline said that following the accident authorities would visit the house with intentions to take them away and place them in state care.

PARISHIONERS are rejoicing following the news St Stephens Church in Williamstown North will not be sold after a reversed decision made by the synod last week. The 130-year-old property was one of 56 church properties to be sold to help repay a $56 million debt incurred by last year’s collapse of Acacia College at Mernda North. The decision came following a public meeting held by the parish last Monday night in which a resolution to “wholeheartedly support” Supreme Court action against 20 members of the Uniting Church synod, who were trying to sell the church and adjacent hall. Church elder and Save St Stephens convener Iris Whitehurst said the synod standing committee had decided that St Stephens could retain most of the property, including two tennis courts, with the exception of the manse at 177 Melbourne Rd. Ms Whitehurst said 23 different community groups used the hall and they were readying themselves for battle to defend the sale of the property. “Community members couldn’t believe on Monday night we were saying save St Stephens and Tuesday morning it was done,” she said. “The first week they told us it was so sad it was as if someone had died, now you can see some smiling faces.” “Everyone was so excited people were jumping for joy.” General Secretary of the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania Reverend Mark Lawrence said the Project Control Group had consulted eight different congregations in Melbourne and Geelong over the last two weeks. He said aside from St Stephens “there were no other changes to the Synod’s divestment list”. Member for Williamstown Wade Noonan who attended the meeting on Monday night, said St Stephens was an important community asset. “It’s not often that David defends Goliath in a battle, but this is one of them.” “It is a major victory for both the St Stephens congregation and community who have very quickly mobilised to send a very clear message to the church that this needs to be saved for the community’s continued use.”
HOBSONS Bay will celebrate International Day of People with Disability with a day of fun and entertainment for everyone. The free event is on Saturday, 30 November from 10am to 1pm at the Wiliamstown Library in Ferguson St in partnership with UCAN Café. Chair of the Disability Advisory Committee Councillor Tony Briffa said the event is a wonderful celebration. “With approximately 20 per cent of local residents affected by a disability, it’s important the council works to help raise awareness, break down barriers, provide opportunities, and ensure people with a disability have their human rights respected,” Cr Briffa said.

Ramping hours double NEW figures show ambulance transfer times at Western Hospital have more than doubled in the past three years. According to the new figures obtained under Freedom of Information laws, the average monthly hours of ambulance ramping at Western Hospital in 2009/10 was 307 and in 2012/13 the hours rose to 636, an increase of 329 hours. Western Health’s executive director of operations, Russell Harrison, said ramping was an issue that Western Health was working to ad-
dress and the new task force report was also looking to address. According to the report, hospitals will take responsibility for emergency patients as soon as ambulances arrive. “Western Health is always committed to managing patients arriving by ambulance as quickly as possible. This is difficult given the increasing numbers of presentations to our emergency departments, Mr Harrison said. He said Western Health was working to increase the space available for emergency department pa-
tients and were considering several options. Labor’s Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Wade Noonan, said the figures proved that “ramping at hospitals has never been as bad as it is now. “Longer ramping times at hospitals means patients are waiting longer to get into hospital and there are fewer ambulances available to respond to life-threatening emergencies - this places lives at risk, Mr Noonan said. “It’s impossible to run an efficient ambulance service if they’re
constantly being misused as pop-up emergency departments for gridlocked hospitals. “We need our ambulances available to attend emergencies, not sitting in queues created by a lack of hospital beds. Mr Noonan slammed the new task force report which would allow ambulances to “dump and run patients. “Without the additional promised beds and staff, this dump-andrun policy will simply deepen the pressure on our failing health system.

NINE-YEAR-OLD Courtney Reid is a rising star on ice, and when she puts on her skates it’s clear to see why. The Williamstown resident recently competed and placed first in the 2013 Victorian Skate Figure Skating Championships. Courtney started skating at the Medibank Icehouse three years ago along with her two brothers who all enjoy activities on the ice. Mum Pam, who enjoyed ice skating as a girl, said for someone with a petite frame she picked it up much quicker than most people her size. “Everyone took notice of her because she was so tiny. She liked that attention, Pam said. Courtney progressed through the Icehouse’s skate school program before moving to rising stars and synchronised skating. She has attended the Lifestyle for Kids dance school in Williamstown North since the age of four, and started competing on the ice two years ago. “You really see now when she competes she has a very pretty way of holding her hands and body and that’s come through dance. Courtney competed in her first competition in September 2011 and placed first in her division. She competes in both the artistic and technical programs and is part of a synchronised skating team of 12. “She really, really loves it, you see her face change when she’s skating, Pam said. “She feels because she can do it so well it gives her self-confidence. I can’t see her giving it up. Courtney said she enjoys being with her friends and hopes to make the nationals over the next two years. A career highlight included a 10-minute pre-show performance in a group of 20 as part of Disney on Ice, which she auditioned for in July. “It was really fun and exciting, Courtney said.

Green use ideas flow By NICOLE VALICEK THE COMMUNITY is being asked to help decide on the future use of the disused Williamstown ladies’ bowling green at Dennis Reserve. Additional tennis courts, a community garden with a meeting space, a dedicated propagation site and informal parkland have been put forward as suggestions for the site. But, Hobsons Bay City Council wants the community to contribute any other ideas for the reserve. Since the Williamstown Ladies Bowls Club amalgamated with the men’s club last year, the future use of the reserve has been debated among a range of community groups. The council has already received several submissions on how the land could be reused. The Williamstown Central Tennis Club wants an additional two courts and the use of the pavilion as an additional club room. Meanwhile, the Williamstown Garden Club is proposing the establishment of a community garden, including the use of the pavilion as a meeting space. Also thrown into the mix, The Friends of Williamstown Botanic Gardens are proposing a dedicated propagation space. The council also received a petition with 187 signatories proposing the restoration to informal parkland for passive use. “These have all been great suggestions, and we are open to others so have your say now and help us determine how this site can be used for the greatest benefit of our community,” Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said. Speaking to Star in August, Williamstown Gardening Club secretary Helen Olsen said they had been pushing for a community garden on the site for two years. “We would prefer a community garden, realistically I don’t know whether council is willing,” she said. “If we can’t have a community garden, open space would be good.” The consultation period will be open for six weeks, closing on Friday 20 December 2013.

Science of perfection through mystic’s eyes By NICOLE VALICEK A FILM by a Williamstown music teacher and research scholar that documents a previously secret spiritual belief system will be premiered to the world. Christopher Basile’s film ’A Meeting with Maharsi Pamungkas’ will have its world premiere at an Asia-Pacific film festival at the University of Melbourne this month. Dr Basile went to Java, Indo-
nesia, with anthropologist Prof Thomas Reuter to capture the insights and wisdom of an intriguing mystic, who for the first time reveals the core teachings of an ancient belief system known as Ilmu Kasampurnan, which translates as The Science of Perfection. “It is very exciting, on the same day Maharsi Pamungkas allowed me to film him, he provided copies of his personal illustrated journals dating back to 1940.”
The journals have been translated and are featured in the film. Dr Basile said that while he could not confirm or deny the efficacy of this system of meditation he was happy to have been present to capture it with his camera as a filmmaker and researcher. “I hope people appreciate the fact that this film presents a rare opportunity to get an intimate and personal view of a side of life in
Indonesia, our nearest neighbour to Australia, which is rarely seen on film.” His film is among more than 30 to be shown during the Aperture Asia-Pacific International Ethnographic Documentary Film Festival at The University of Melbourne 21-23 November. In Williamstown, Chicago-born Dr Basile is best known as a teacher of guitar, bass and ukulele at The Williamstown Guitar School.

PETITIONERS have won a battle to improve the safety of a playground with the erection of a new fence. During its ordinary meeting last week, Hobsons Bay City Council allocated $95,000 in the 2013-14 capital works program to install a fence around G Den Dulk Reserve, Altona. The council received a petition with 63 signatories requesting a fence be installed to improve the safety of the playground users. The petition asked the council to improve the safety on the corner of Somers Parade, Seagull Ave and Blyth St by providing a fence to prevent children from running onto oncoming traffic. “This playground is surrounded by roads on three sides, and is located in the middle of a busy bus terminal, shopping strip and kindergarten, thus raising the risk of children running onto oncoming traffic,” the petition said. According to the council report, the installation of a reserve perimeter fence has been identified as a “priority”.

Scott Meager looks forward to a great turn out at the Williamstown Heritage Beer and Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI Cider Festival this Saturday. 109906
Taste of heritage brews By NICOLE VALICEK THERE won’t be a dry mouth in sight this weekend when the Williamstown Heritage Beer and Cider festival comes to town. The inaugural festival was born from an idea to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Steam Packet Hotel in Cole St. “The idea came from the pub turning 150 years old this year,” festival director Scott Meager said. “Also, on January 7, the liquor licence turns 175. I thought we should have an event to celebrate both.” The festival will take place just a short walk from the pub
on 23 November, featuring a mixture of brewers stalls, live entertainment and a handful of cider and wine stalls. An exclusive festival brew created in collaboration with Two Birds Brewing and festival director Scott Meager will be showcased at the festival. Mr Meager said the idea for the Pale Ale recently named The Forager of Williamstown came after he discovered Williamstown use to have its own breweries in the 1800s. He wanted to create a beer in the style of one from the 1800s that represented Williamstown and highlighted the heritage. The Forager of Williamstown Pale Ale will be on tap
for a month. There will also be 80 different beer varieties to try on the day including seasonal batched one off brew. “It is certainly an exciting time for the festival as the main reason it was founded now becomes what we hope to be a fantastic and easy drinking beer,” Mr Meager said. In total, there will be 23 different beer, cider and wine makers with more than 70 products up for tasting at the festival. The event is the first of its kind in the Western Suburbs and is planned to become an annual event. The festival is an 18 years plus event. Tickets can be purchased at http://willybeerfest. com.au.

Boost for 100 projects By NICOLE VALICEK MORE than 100 projects across the municipality have been allocated a share of $180,000 as part of Hobsons Bay City Council’s 2014 Community grants program. A total of 103 projects will share the grant money provided by the council to community groups and organisations each year. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the program highlighted the council’s commitment to building a “skilled, connected, inclusive and resilient community”. Projects funded include
those that were well connected to the local community and would also support the key priorities of the council’s Community Health and Wellbeing Plan 2013-2017. “The 2014 projects are very diverse, from supporting community gardens, celebrating national days and helping kindergarten projects, to activities for seniors.” Cr Wilson said. “This year’s program includes a contribution of $20,000 from Toyota’s corporate citizenship program and this support is a reflection of its role as a valued corporate citizen.” Several projects focus on
priority areas in Laverton, Altona Meadows and Altona North and address projects for homeless young people and strengthening volunteerism in Hobsons Bay. “Supporting and encouraging volunteerism is important to me and I am delighted that the Community Grants Program gives the council the opportunity to support and reward our volunteers.” The council held a Community Grants Program event to celebrate the achievements of the 2013 funded projects and congratulate the 2014 grant recipients last Saturday.

Rib-tickling farce on stage By NICOLE VALICEK WILLIAMSTOWN Little Theatre (WLT) is proud to present its latest stage production, a hilarious, fast-paced farce matched with a stellar cast that’s sure to make it a hit. WLT latest theatrical production of Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum, is now playing. The production was revived in Australia last year by the AussieTheatre staging a season at Her Majesty’s Theatre and headlined by Australia icon Geoffrey Rush. “We can’t promise you Geoffrey Rush but we can promise you a fun-filled show
packed with laughter and surprise,” WLT director Barbara Hughes said. Pseudolus, a slave, wants just one thing: to be free. And when his young master, Hero, falls in love with the virgin Philia, Pseudolus sees a way to achieve his ambition. “What follows is a bawdy, madcap, musical romp through ancient Rome, complete with citizens and centurions, courtesans and eunuchs, cunning disguises, mistaken identities and pitiful puns.” WLT welcomes back Andrew Wild in the lead role of ‘Pseudolus’. Andrew has appeared in the WLT musicals Something’s Afoot, I Love You,
You’re Perfect, Now Change and Lucky Stiff. ‘Hysterium’ will be played by Michael Bingham who some might remember as The Twins in The Venetian Twins and from I Love You, You’re Perfect and Now Change. Other cast members include well-known Melbourne based musical performer Bob Harsley as Senex. “Hold on to your togas-it’s going to be a wild chariot ride with lots of familiar faces and some delightful new ones.” A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum season will run until 30 November at WLT 2-4 Albert St, Williamstown. The final countdown to digital-only TV has begun!
Melbourne and surrounding areas switch on 10 December 2013* The analog TV switch off is happening on 10 December 2013* – and there’s no turning back. After this date you won’t see anything if you’re not ready for digital-only TV.
What do I have to do? Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.
Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

WESTERN Suburbs drivers are taking a risk every time they get behind the wheel as they are exposed to roads that have become dangerous and fallen into disrepair, according to local politicians. Shadow Minister for Roads, Luke Donnellan joined Western MPs Natalie Hutchins and Cesar Melhem to launch the www.FixOurRoads.com. au website. Mr Donnellan said Labor launched the website because new analysis of VicRoads documents shows the Napthine Government was short-changing families and businesses across Melbourne’s West on road infrastructure. Mr Donnellan said the VicRoads Metropolitan North West Region had capital funding dropped by $48 million or 58.6 per cent. Capital funding for the North West Region was $81.9 million in 2011-12 and in 2012-13 dropped to $33 million. “Documents obtained from VicRoads under FOI reveal that funding for roads projects across Melbourne’s West has been cut dramatically,” Mr Donnellan said. Ms Hutchins, Member for Keilor said local residents were losing out with 450 staff cut from VicRoads, causing long delays for much needed projects in the area, such as the Melton Highway rail crossing in Sydenham. “We are seeing no action on major arterials, intersections and rail crossings that need safety upgrades,” Ms Hutchins said. Ms Hutchins said the Melton Highway boom gates were down for 52 minutes every two hours during peak times, delaying journeys by 20 minutes, with heavy traffic increasing risks for local children. Mr Melhem said he was concerned by the lack of movement on road upgrades in Melbourne’s West, including another grade separation at Main Road in St Albans. “A single grade separation costs upwards of $150 million but the Napthine Government has only provided $52.3 million to be stretched across nine projects,” Mr Melham said. “The fact is, this money does nothing to remove the Main Road rail crossing.” Liberal politician and Member for the Western Metropolitan Region, Andrew Elsbury, said any neglect of the West’s roads was inherited from the previous Labor government. “Claims by the Labor opposition about roads funding is close to laughable,” Mr Elsbury said. “Under Labor, even with the former roads minister Tim Pallas as a member of the area, the western suburbs did not get our fair share of funding.” “By comparison the Coalition in the 2013/14 budget has committed an extra $170 million in road maintenance funding. We have committed to projects like the Sneyeds Road overpass, and other associated works to the tune of $72 million. “Further safety upgrades have been undertaken on Derrimut/Hopkins and the Melton Hwy,” Mr Elsbury said. “Meanwhile notorious intersections like that at K Rd and Duncan’s Rd in Werribee, Forsyth Rd and Old Geelong Rd in Hoppers Crossing and Sunshine Ave and Odessa Ave in Keilor Downs, will receive upgrades and traffic signalisation where it is needed.”

The market was created by mums and sisters-in-law Bianca Patsalis and Stacey Patsalis who wanted to create a space that their children could have a fun time while they nab a bargain. “As mums ourselves, our boys could think of nothing worse than getting dragged along to a weekend market,” Bianca said. “They are always asking us where the “fun stuff” is. And
WITH AUTO
that was the birth of Melbourne Cheeky Monkey Market in 2013.” “Melbourne Cheeky Monkey Market has a strong focus on fun; we aim to be the market that the kids nag you about taking them to not dragging you out of.” Bianca said an exciting feature of the Christmas market would be live reindeer and Santa sleigh photo opportunities. “Everyone that enters the market on the day goes into draw to win a family holiday,” she added. Adult entry is $3 and kids are free.

Cafe offers fresh hope By NICOLE VALICEK
Erika Gofton and Celeste Chandker will challenge fellow artists in The Drawing Theatre. 109747 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT
Challenge drawing skills By NICOLE VALICEK ARTISTS are invited to attend a five-day intensive workshop that will challenge them to experience drawing like never before. The Art Room presents The Drawing Theatre - a challenging and stimulating drawing intensive taught by five wellrespected contemporary artists over five consecutive days at The Substation in Newport. The Art Room is an art class and workshop space located at the Cotton Mills, Footscray and run by Yarraville artist and Drawing Theatre creator Erika Gofton. Ms Gofton attended a residency in
New York at the start of the year where she undertook a 10-day drawing marathon at the New York Studio School. She researched how this was run with the intention of holding a similar workshop for local artists. “It is an opportunity for artists and art students to step into the unknown, to try new approaches and to take a risk in their practice,” she said. She said it is not a ‘learn to draw’ class as such and therefore it is expected that participants will have a level confidence in their own practice. “It’s an opportunity to re-engage with not just drawing, more than anything to be challenged.” The intensive workshop will consider
the relationship between drawing and performance both as observer and participant. Ms Gofton said each teacher/artist will design their own program in response to this brief, creating a very unique and engaging drawing experience every day, which will be influenced by their approach to their own work. “It is not about coming away with a perfect finished drawing to hang on the wall but a new set of experiences and processes to inform their own work in the future,” she said. The event will be held at The Substation from 9-13 December. Spaces are still available. For more information visit http://www.the-art-room.com.au.
A SOCIAL enterprise that is proactively changing the story of disability and employment in the community opened the doors to its newest venture last Friday. UCAN Café Williamstown officially opened its doors at a launch last Friday, with ongoing support from celebrity chef Adrian Richardson. Adrian has signed on as mentor to the UCAN Café team and will lead the new UCAN Ambassador Program designed to support and grow the individual talents of team members. UCAN Café provides employment opportunities to young people with disabilities. The first UCAN Café opened at Altona North in August 2011 and created 3000 hours of employment for Hobsons Bay most vulnerable residents in just three months. Sales and marketing manager Tom Bevan said in a short time the success of the UCAN Café has seen it expand across two cafes and a catering business. Mr Bevan said more than 20 staff, who are paid award wages, work across the business - with all profits going back to the project. “One in five people in Australia have a disability,” he said. “There are so many people willing to work and for us to be able to open a café and another catering site it’s great to be able to create those opportunities.” He said UCAN Café has created more than 20,000 hours of employment since it started. “All together we want to double the hours we’ve already created,” Mr Bevan said. “The one thing that is going to

make it work is community engagement and community getting behind what we’re doing.” Aaron Mattiske started working at the café two years ago and will be a team member at the new Williamstown site. The 25-year-old, who has autism, said working at the café has given him a new direction in life. “I like going to work every day,” he said. “The customers are really nice and I like the café itself - making all the food and coffees and meeting new people.” The new UCAN Cafe Williamstown is located at the Williamstown Library, 104 Ferguson St.

Symbolic gifts to mark milestones THE tradition of giving specific anniversary gifts based on the number of years a couple has been married dates back to the Middle Ages. Opinions differ on how the custom came about. Some think it probably has underlying it a belief in the correspondence of certain luck-bringing substances with a distinct number of years while others say it marks a deepening of the couple’s
commitment, an accumulation of time irreplaceable. To help celebrate these occasions are special gifts, one assigned to each anniversary and each with its own material and symbolic value. Some of the gifts might seem a little strange at first, as it’s doubtful most men will shriek with delight should they receive a gift of lace or china. But despite a few head-
scratching selections, the list features a range of helpful, thoughtful and diverse gift ideas that can serve as a jumping-off point for shopping ventures. Regardless of whether you feel this gift list is dated and archaic or classic and hip, couples can enjoy learning how it came into favour in the first place. On making it 365 days as a newlywed couple, everyday life is hectic and it is more im-

portant than ever to “smell the roses” and appreciate the person who is travelling through life with you. You have a long road ahead of you and there will be ups and downs, but you can demonstrate your love each anniversary by giving a meaningful, traditional gift. The first traditional anniversary gift is paper and the modern gift is a clock. The 10th wedding anniversary nowadays calls for the most distinct gemstone yet, the diamond. The traditional gift is tin or aluminium. Traditionally, a china gift is given on the 20th anniversary with platinum being the modern twist for this occasion. The milestone that every married couple strives for is 50 years of marriage. We congratulate each and every couple that reaches this milestone. Gold is the precious metal associated with the 50th wedding anniversary. With 60 years of marriage behind you, there is very little that you have not seen. This is a great time to sit back and reflect on the time you have spent together, the accomplishments you have achieved and the happiness you have shared with others. Celebrate with diamonds to mark this beautiful milestone.

Draft wildcard Cat to coach shorts
By ADEM SARICAOGLU
JAMES Sicily emerged as the Western Jets’ leading AFL draft candidate during the 2013 season. Across 16 games for the Jets in the TAC Cup this year, the 18-year-old Keilor product regularly featured among the standouts and managed to kick 26 goals, 11 of which came from a four-game burst through April and May. His form and promise was good enough to warrant selection for Vic Metro in the national championships, where Sicily averaged 14 disposals and seven marks. But it wasn’t Sicily’s ability to generate numbers that has led to his emergence as one of the real wildcards in this Thursday’s draft. Rather, it’s the wide variety of boxes he ticks both as an athlete and a natural footballing mind that has Jets coach Torin Baker confident Sicily will get to an AFL club this summer. “I think he’ll have a successful AFL career,” Baker said. “He can play a variety of roles at AFL level. “He’s kicked nearly 30 goals in the TAC Cup this year which shows he’s good around goal, so I think he’ll probably start as a forward and further into his career he’ll be able to play a midfield role.” It remains somewhat of a mystery just where Sicily is best suited on the field.
Most of those who should know best believe his strong overhead ability makes Sicily a formidable key forward option, while others are well aware of the value he brings into the midfield. Sicily himself isn’t entirely sure where he fits best, but he does have a preference. “With the Jets I was playing in a key forward role, which I’d never played previously,” Sicily said. “But I do see myself as a midfielder more than a forward.” Baker regards Sicily more as a highly versatile utility. “He’s a high forward that has the capabilities to really hurt you with his marking strength, but in saying that I really think one of his strengths is he’s just such a versatile player,” Baker said. “He can play on the wing, he showed he can play an inside role and I’ve got confidence that he could play as a half back flanker or something like that as well.” Not originally noted for his speed, Sicily surprised everyone at last month’s national draft combine with a 2.84-second 20-metre sprint - the fourth best overall. All that remains now is the nerve-racking reveal of whether an AFL club is willing to enlist his services for 2014 and beyond. “I’m quite excited at the moment but the nerves will definitely kick in come the day of the draft,” Sicily said. “I think I’ve done enough (to get drafted), but there’s still that element of doubt as well.”
Draft Watch James Sicily DOB: 06/01/1995 Junior club: Keilor d Position: Midfielder/Forward 2013 Average Disposals: 19.13 (16 games) Torin Baker says: “He’s a high forward that has the capabilities to really hurt you with his marking strength, but in saying that I really think that one of his strengths is he’s just such a versatile player.”

Jets fly alternate routes By ADEM SARICAOGLU

WESTERN Jets region manager Shane Sexton has been pleased to see the increased progress of footballers seeking alternate pathways into the AFL in recent years. New Essendon recruit Johnny Rayner recently added his name to the growing list of former Western Jets who eventually found their way onto an AFL list despite being overlooked at the draft. In another promising sign, Brett Bewley, Jake McKenzie, Harley Walshe and Lachie Hickey, all Jets in 2013, have been snapped up by Williamstown in the VFL. But while Sexton acknowledges the recent influx of mature-aged recruits has made it harder for kids to enter the AFL system through the traditional draft pathway, he still believes the majority of new recruits will come out of the under-18 system. “I think clubs are still looking for guys that can play league footy,” Sexton said.
“Sure, the readymade players are going to be a bit more advanced than the 18-year-olds these days, but the bulk of the kids are still going to come out of under-age footy and particularly the TAC Cup.” Three Western Jets from the class of 2013 look to be in the running for a chance to land on an AFL list during this coming draft period, which begins with this Thursday’s national draft on the Gold Coast. Leading the Jets charge will be versatile utility James Sicily, who offers a strong mix of physical ability and footballing know-how on the park. “James is a very talented player, and very skilful,” Sexton said. “He’s got the capacity to do things out of the ordinary and does it regularly. “At different times during the year he proved he can go through the midfield, clearly he can go forward and be really dangerous, he’s exceptional overhead, he’s a good kick and he’s got a terrific capacity to read the game.”
The Jets’ only other Vic Metro representative in 2013, Jake Greiser, also has plenty to offer as an inside midfield option, according to Sexton. “He’s right up there and he’s really good with his hands, which made him quicker in that sense,” Sexton said. “His attitude and application to the task at hand is first rate, so he ticks a lot of boxes as well.” However, Williamstown product David Iaccarino looms as the great unknown of the Jets’ class of 2013. Iaccarino was clearly the Jets’ best player in 2013, but persistent shoulder problems meant he missed out on both Vic Metro selection and an invitation to October’s draft combines. “He’s very well known in draft circles,” Sexton insists. “Many of the recruiters that I’ve spoken to know what he can do and have witnessed it. “So I’d be hopeful for David that he finds his way to an AFL club as well.”
WERRIBEE has added former Geelong star Peter Riccardi to its coaching panel for next season. Riccardi played 288 games for the Cats in a long and distinguished career. After his playing days finished he turned to coaching in the Geelong Football League and led North Shore last season. The good news doesn’t stop there for Werribee. The club also welcomes dual North Ballarat VFL premiership player Jacob Spolding to the role of forward line coach while Keenan Reynolds will look after the back-line in 2014. In other coaching changes, Chris Gilham has moved into the role of opposition coach, Michael McMaster will be the senior match day runner. He will also assist in player development and former player Phil O’Keefe returns to the club as coach of the Development League team, taking over from Scott Korczynski. “We thank the outgoing coaches Scott K, Michael Pisani and Tim Ruffles (also a player), for their contribution to the club,” Werribee coach John Lamont said. “I am really pleased with the coaching group we have assembled, with our players being the obvious beneficiaries.” AFTER several race cancellations due to Melbourne’s wet spring weather, riders finally got to the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU/FCC Sports Criterium Track in Hoppers Crossing with four sensational races to enjoy. A-Grade’s windy race was dominated by a two-man breakaway from the start of the race, with Target Trek rider Dom Dudkiewicz taking off with French international rider Mathieu Delaroziere. The bunch was just unable to bring the pair back as they built up an insurmountable lead. Melton resident Dudkiewicz rode particularly well, considering the month of illness he has had. “This is my first crit since coming back from a bad dose of the flu,” he said. “This is the first time in weeks I’ve gone above 30km an hour. “I attacked from the start. Myself and the international rider (Delaroziere) broke away on the third lap and the two of us worked hard for the whole race,” Dudkiewicz said. “There was no real cat-and-mouse between us. On the last lap I got on the front and was first wheel around the last corner. I didn’t know if he could sprint and I kicked at the corner and realised I had it.” The bunch kick for third was taken out by returning rider Stuart Grimsey. Dudkiewicz is looking forward to a better run of luck coming into the summer action. “I want to start building up now and hit it hard for the Bay Crits and, if the form is good enough, the nationals,” he said. CAROLINE Springs is in a strong position to beat Williamstown Imperials in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A-Grade Matting competition this Saturday. After choosing to bat first on its home deck at Town Centre Oval, the home team got off to a good start with openers Darren Arandez (32) and Burhan Butt (14) providing 42 runs for the first drop. At number three Jack Taylor then came in to provide another 44, while Warwick Jaensch’s unbeaten 36 from number eight also proved handy for Caroline Springs, which has set the Imps 205 for victory this weekend. In other matches taking place in the division, Wyndham Vale needs another 90 runs for victory over Seabrook, while Melton South Primary School is in for a big day this Saturday, needing to chase down the WLSC Marshalls’ 9/251. At Blackwood Reserve, Point Cook is 1/23, chasing Melton Centrals’ 159.

Local clubs in spending spree THE Deer Park Football club has certainly not sat on its hands since winning the WRFL Division One Grand final in September. Last week another major recruiting coup with the signing of former Bulldogs defender Ryan Hargrave and ex-GWS and Carlton player Bret Thornton. This on top of signing dual Hawthorn premiership player Brent Guerra. Social media went nuts about local footy being ruined by the almighty dollar but while there is no salary cap, points or workable system to even the competition this is always going to happen. You can’t blame a club for attracting sponsorship dollars and then spending it on players. I have no problem with that, as long as the club remains committed to junior development as well, because that is the future of clubs and the game. I hope rival clubs don’t make the mistake of spending money that they don’t have in order to be competitive. Another former Bulldog and Port Melbourne premiership player Wayde Skipper has joined Hoppers Crossing. “Skip” is a great bloke and will be a great addition to the Warriors on and off the field. Sunshine George Cross and Werribee City were both offered a chance to join the co-signatory group’s proposed NPL model last week. 106166 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT
Wait on NPL rollout THE immediate future of Victorian soccer remains in limbo after clubs were told to prepare for the imminent rollout of the National Premier League last week. Just days after Football Federation Victoria announced its plans for the Victorian rollout of the NPL had been put on ice, the co-signatory clubs convened a meeting in Coburg on Tuesday. South Melbourne director and co-signatory spearhead Tom Kalas addressed the gathering of more than 40 clubs. He told them Football Federation Australia has given its blessing for the group to proceed
with the implementation of its own NPL model. Under the newly-proposed model, all current Victorian Premier League and State League One clubs would qualify for the new two-tier NPL, provided they meet the required coaching and administrative standards. While nothing has since been announced or confirmed, Kalas told Star on Sunday he expects a resolution to come through sometime this week. “I’m confident there will be an NPL next year,” Kalas said. “We want to know what’s going to happen sometime soon and obviously before Christmas, so we can
get organised and cued up for next year. “We’ve asked the FFA to work as quickly as possible because it’ll make it easier to get organised.” Kalas also revealed at the meeting both Sunshine George Cross and Werribee City had been invited to join the co-signatory group. Failure to do so would mean each club’s place in the NPL would be offered elsewhere - a position reiterated by Kalas on Sunday. The two SL1 clubs were given until Sunday evening to make their intentions clear. But Werribee City president Sam Panebianco told Star he will only deal with the FFV or FFA on
the matter, and not the co-signatory clubs. “We’ll just wait until the official news comes out from the FFV and FFA on what direction they’re going,” Panebianco said. “They’re the people that drive and are in charge of soccer in Victoria and Australia. “If we get notification from the FFV or FFA then we’ll go to the next step, but only once we get actual notification from one of them.” New Sunshine George Cross president Jamie Chetcuti chose not to comment on his club’s position, but it is understood the club’s board was due to meet on Sunday.
THOSE players at McLean Reserve bottom oval last weekend playing for or against Spotswood Fourths were girt by Schibecis. Well known SEN broadcaster and the Voice of the “G” Tony Schibeci was joined by two of his sons, Daniel and Brayden in the whites for the Woodsmen. The boys made their contribution each taking two wickets but for Tony it was not a great day - he scored a duck. The game ended in a tie. The Ashes starting this week means cricket is back in a big way.
Top guns join Gulls WILLIAMSTOWN has continued its brilliant off-season recruiting run with the club adding another two guns last week. First cab off the rank was West Adelaide captain Ryan Ferguson who will be a playing assistant coach. Ferguson follows senior coach Andy Collins in returning to Melbourne from West Adelaide. Collins was delighted to have secured the defender’s signature. “Ryan is not blessed with huge muscles or blistering pace but I have coached Ryan for the last six years and it is easy to say that he is the best player I have been involved with,” Collins said. “Ryan has great aerial courage, he understands the game and the angles that are critical to being a great key defender.” Ferguson will be joined at the Seagulls by Williamstown local Ben Davies. The 27-year-old returns to Wil-
liamstown after playing in the strong Ovens and Murray Football League for the last two seasons with the Wodonga Raiders and the Wangaratta Magpies. Davies also played his underage football with the Williamstown Juniors before graduating to the Western Jets and an AFL career with Collingwood and North Melbourne. Williamstown CEO Brendan Curry was rapt to have Davies back at the Seagulls. “We are thrilled to have Ben back playing with our club. Ben is in the prime of his career and brings extra experience and leadership to our playing group. Ben will provide us extra run, carry and leg speed and his ball winning ability has always been held in high regard. Davies said that he was delighted to return to Williamstown. “It was a no-brainer for me. With the club going standalone I’m really excited to be back involved playing
THIS Thursday night the AFL National Draft will determine the sporting and professional future of about 60 young men who will be brought into the AFL system. The problem is about 200 more will miss out on their dream and while many will get picked up in the rookie draft for many the dream is over. Imagine that? Hopefully the ones not drafted are not lost to the game and will continue to try to make it happen through VFL football. While professional sport appears to be a wonderful lifestyle, truth is it is a ruthless business these days. For every Brad Johnson, Rohan Smith and Doug Hawkins who play 300 games there are hundreds who never play one.

PLENTY of movement in local VFL footy as well with Werribee adding former Geelong star Peter Riccardi and dual North Ballarat premiership player Jacob Spolding to its coaching panel. Former player Phil O’Keeffe takes on the role of Development coach and Michael McMaster a 1993 premiership player is the senior runner. At Williamstown for 2007 Gerry Callahan Medallist Ben Davies is back from the bush and former Western Jet Sean Tighe is back from WA. The two teams will meet in a pre season game on Saturday 8 March at a venue to be announced.

Hussey fires on the track HE MAY be young, but Matthew Hussey is on his way to the top. And he is running as fast as he can to get there. After tearing up the track for the last few years, Hussey, 12, recently added another impressive milestone to his resume. While competing at the Victorian Primary School Track
and Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium, Hussey completed a hat-trick of gold medals in the 1500 metre event. He also crossed the line first in 2011 and 2012. However, what makes his performance truly outstanding is that over the same three- year period, Hussey also won the Victoria
Primary School Cross Country Championships three times. There appears to be no slowing down for the rising star who is aiming for even bigger things in 2014. Hussey has his eyes on success at state and national level competing for the Altona Little Athletics Centre and Western Athletics.
