Our new mayor By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S BUSINESS as usual according to Wodonga’s new mayor, councillor Rodney Wangman. On Monday evening, Cr Wangman defeated outgoing mayor Mark Byatt with four votes to three. Cr Wangman was nominated by Cr Mike Fraser, and his nomination seconded by Cr Anna Speedie. “Last night Cr Fraser made particular mention of both the strengths of Mark and myself – we are different people,” Cr Wangman said. “I’ve respectfully acknowledged that Mark has been a mayor for five years and served this community extremely well. He gave up a lot of his time and I know what that’s like, having been there before. Family, friends, have to give way to the greater good of the community. “He won’t be lost. Just because he’s not mayor, his experience, his network, his history on many of the projects, small and large, will be a contribution at our table.” City of Wodonga CEO Patience Harrington said she was looking forward to the strong leadership Cr Wangman offered. “It will be a great privilege to work with Councillor Wangman as mayor,” she said. “I enjoy very strong and very clear leadership from my council.” Despite the change in leadership, Cr Wangman said he would be following plans already set, including the development of the CBD, supporting employment at Logic Centre and working towards the recreation plan for Baranduda Fields. “There won’t be any changes all of a sudden because I’m mayor, in fact it will be business as usual,” he said. “Council will continue to work as a collective group on these strategies and

City of Wodonga CEO Patience Harrington welcomes Wodonga’s new mayor – Cr Rodney Wangman. the hopes and aspirations we have going forward. The immediate things that are still front and centre for us are the redevelopment of the CBD - and that’s hopefully attached with the Manns redevelopment, in addition to that there’s the Elgin Boulevard construction and that will be occurring in the near future, Havelock Street is well underway. “On top of that we will continue to support the employment incubator at Logic which we see as a very key part of the infrastructure of Wodonga.

“Last night council announced the release of the second stage report of Baranduda Fields which is a largescale, 100-hectare site and looks 2030 years in advance. That in unison with the recreation plan that comes out in early 2014 will be the bedrock of where we go in terms of sport and recreation in this city well into the future.” While some concerns surround the development of Baranduda Fields, specifically the future of clubs like the Wodonga Bulldogs, Cr Wangman said

people needed to recognise the fastgrowing needs of Wodonga. “We will invite the local clubs to be part of the journey,” he said. “Some will seek to want to move there, some will be created as a consequence of Baranduda as it already exists and others will naturally have concerns about where the money gets spread across Wodonga. “Wodonga is growing rapidly and it does already need more sport and more recreational facilities.”

Cr Wangman also took the opportunity to ‘put to bed’ rumours that he and Cr Byatt had made a deal to put Cr Wangman at the helm. “There were two nominations and an election of a mayor last night so for those who might suggest it was a deal and everything, I think that’s just put to bed,” he said. “There was no deal – I said it at the time, Cr Byatt said it at the time, it was self-evident last night.”

Feeling blue on diabetes THE Wodonga Water Tower and the QEII Square in Albury were lit blue last Thursday evening to mark World Diabetes Day and raise awareness regarding diabetes in the local community. The local seat of Farrer has an estimated rate of diabetes of 7.20 per cent, which affects approximately 6735 people. World Diabetes Day, November 14, was an opportunity for all locals to stop sitting, stand up and take a step forward to better their health, with the aim of preventing the onset of Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease - type two diabetes. Across the globe, there are approximately 366 million people with diabetes, of which 3.61 million are Australians. This chronic disease is seen as one of the world’s most serious health concerns, which is why World Diabetes Day has been officially recognised by the United Nations. Nicola Stokes, CEO of Australian Diabetes Council, highlights the significance of World Diabetes Day in educating the community about

the simple and effective measures that can be undertaken to curb the global diabetes epidemic. “Taking time to invest in a more active lifestyle helps all Australians; not only those at risk of diabetes, but for those who are trying to avoid the onset of the disease,” Ms Stokes said. “Our sedentary lifestyles are impacting severely on the standard of health, yet we continue passively sitting. The good news is even little steps can have big benefits. It’s time for Australians to snap out of our busy yet sedentary lives and take a step for diabetes “With one person diagnosed every five minutes, each Australian has a responsibility to take control and look after their health, in order to establish healthy and balanced lifestyle behaviours which will help reduce rates of type two diabetes among younger generations.” People who are concerned about diabetes or who would like further information about Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease can visit www.australiandiabetescouncil.com or call 1300 342 238 to speak with an expert.

Planning for growth with grant WODONGA Council has welcomed a $250,000 Victorian Government grant for a structure plan for the Leneva growth area. Wodonga Mayor Mark Byatt said the funding was a show of faith in the Wodonga area. “We predict that this growth area will house more than 50,000 people by 2033,” he said. “The funding will allow our council to plan a community which is environmentally sustainable and which provides an integrated and communitybased approach to its residents. “This is a unique opportunity for our council and this grant is a strong show of support from the Victorian Government in our city and its growth opportunities.” Cr Byatt said the council believed the growth area would be further enhanced by the Baran-

Spot the colony of fruit bats in the Albury Botanic Gardens.

Going batty A COLONY of about 200 greyheaded flying foxes or fruit bats has taken up residence in the Albury Botanic Gardens. Albury City Director Community and Recreation, James Jenkins says while it’s not uncommon for bats to nest in the gardens, it’s the first time a population of this size has moved in. He says it’s possible the bats are just roosting in the gardens until they find another food source. “We’ve put in place a number of measures to ensure that the bats are not causing disruption to normal gardens activities or upcoming events, including

roping off the area where the bats are roosting and installing signage warning of their presence,” Mr Jenkins said. “We are liaising with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage about options to manage the colony, but at this stage the bats could remain in the gardens for some time. We believe many of the females have pups, therefore they cannot be moved until the pups have separated from their mothers and learnt to fly. “While we are concerned about the impact a population of this size will have on trees within the gardens as the bats

break off branches and twigs when they move around, we’ll be taking measures to ensure that the health of the trees and the amenity of the gardens, one of Albury’s most popular venues, is not compromised by their presence.” Mr Jenkins said visitors to the gardens need to be aware of the bats, and avoid coming into contact with them. The risk to public safety is minimal as the bats are rarely on the ground. If visitors are bitten or scratched it is recommended that they seek medical advice.

The Victorian Government has given $250,000 towards a structure plan for the Leneva growth area. duda Fields sporting precinct, a 100ha council-owned area which is being planned to support the city’s future sporting needs. “Leneva-Baranduda growth area will provide an enviable lifestyle choice and further enhance what Wodonga offers as

a city,” he said. “As a council, we will continue looking for strong business and economic development opportunities to support our residential growth as Wodonga continues to position itself as a leading regional Victorian city.”

AFTER 1642 agonising steps in full firefighter kit and breathing apparatus, Chiltern firefighter Shannon Beacom had learnt what it meant to truly ‘hit the wall.’ “I’d heard the term ‘when you hit the wall,’ but I’d never experienced it before because I don’t do many races, but I hit it well and truly,” he said. “On the 71st floor my body just couldn’t take any more, I had to stop. I stood there for a bit just trying to sip water slowly and catch my breath. “One of the ladies ended up coming up, asked if I was all right and said ‘we can get someone to come up if you want and we’ll take you down in the elevator.’ I said ‘no, I’m going to finish!’ So I caught my breath and kept going until I got to the top of Eureka Tower.” Two months of training and fund-raising had finally come to a head for Shannon when he competed in the Eureka Climb on Sunday. Having exceeded his goal of raising $1000, he even managed to recruit a last minute contender. “I raised over $1200 and

I’m still waiting on a couple of pledges to come in,” Shannon said. “Daniel Richardson came in at the last minute and ended up raising over $600 which was great considering he only had a week.” Daniel took off in the 9am wave representing the Chiltern Junior Fire Brigaide/ Chiltern Movember Mo Ride. “He’s only 15 years old and he completed the race in 15.35 minutes, the winner completed it in 7.36 minutes,” Shannon said. “For a 15-year-old who isn’t a professional athlete and competed with people who do these events across the world, he’s done very well.” The pair travelled to Melbourne on Friday, stopping at service stations to rattle their tins and scrape together some last-minute funds. “People were very generous, and a big thanks to the owners of the service stations who didn’t mind us approaching their customers,” Shannon said. Shannon’s climb began at 10.45am, finishing with a time of 34.07 minutes. “It was a very good experi-

ence actually - the different heat, the motion in your legs, the weight on your back, my whole body ended up feeling different exhaustion points,” he said. “Full credit to the Eureka Climb organisers and the staff, they did an amazing job, they really looked after us when we got to the finish line. They treat you for everything from exhaustion to heat stress.” And having received a mountain of support, Shannon and Daniel will attempt the climb again in 2014. “Daniel and I have both said we’ll do it again next year and we’ve even managed to rope in some of our friends who came down to support us,” Shannon said. “We had great community support - they really got behind Daniel and I. We weren’t able to walk down the street without someone wishing us good luck. “Next year I want to challenge myself and try to beat 30 minutes. “Even though it was very gruelling, it was so fun. When you reach the finish line strangers you’ve never met were giving you hugs and handshakes, it’s something different.”

Albury mayor Kevin Mack and Albury youth mayor Nathan Mackay are working towards viable solutions for the issues of Albury youth. Picture: ADAM WILSON

Listen to the kids “They know what’s going on in the community, they know what the committee needs to thrive, they know how to enable the committee to be part of that social structure that we need to enact as a council. “I’ve given them an undertaking this morning that if they come to us with viable solutions and alternatives, we’ll listen to them because our job is to listen to them and they are part of the community. “They’re addressing issues in relation to the Retro Youth Cafe, bullying, violence and certainly accommodating entertainment in their life. “I think there’s a real trend where they believe there isn’t enough for them to do and I think that’s really one of the solutions they’re trying to come to - what can we do as a council to provide them with the necessary entertainment to survive them.

“THEY are the now, they’re not the future ... they’re the energy and the focus we need to listen to and encourage,” said Albury City mayor Kevin Mack. Last week saw the coming together of over 100 of Albury’s youngest and brightest minds for the city’s biggest brainstorm to address key issues affecting young people. Albury City’s Youth Forum at the Entertainment Centre covered growing awareness of local services, entertainment options, future planning for youth services, bullying, mental health services, drugs and alcohol. Cr Mack said the forum was about turning the ideas and dreams of local young people into reality. “It’s really important for us to listen to our young people and certainly enact viable alternatives,” he said.

“As a council our role will be as advocates and partners with other community groups to bring their dreams to fruition.” Over 100 young people from Years 7-12 attended the event, representing six local schools. Albury Youth Mayor Nathan Mackay said the Youth Forum was the perfect opportunity for youth to voice their concerns and issues. “It’s fantastic to see so many kids from so many different schools turn up today,” he said. “The young people come together to combat issues, there’s kids from all different schools and it makes strategies easier to implement. “Everything that’s heard here today we will eventually implement with the next youth council – projects, strategies, advice to schools, programs and strategies to help improve these issues, in particular bullying, drugs and alcohol.”

Our online daters A SURVEY of Wodonga’s average online daters has revealed those on the market are likely to be teachers, nurses or retired, and nearly half have been married before. The eHarmony survey was completed Australia-wide and showed Wodonga’s daters are more-or-less representative of all Australian daters. The study found the average Australian online dater was in their earlyto-mid thirties and likely working in an environment which hindered the development of meaningful romantic relationships. eHarmony studied its member base and discovered the average female was 34 and a half years old, 165cm tall and, more likely than not a teacher, nurse or retail worker. A typical male searching for love online is closer to 32, 179cm tall and also most likely to be a teacher. “A considerable amount of our social interactions take place via the internet, so it makes sense that Australians now recognise the convenience and potential of online dating,” eHarmony spokesperson Sarah Mason said. “You’re no longer limited by your everyday interactions and social circles to find someone who you are truly compatible with.” Australia’s eastern seaboard is where online dating flourishes, with 31 per cent of members in NSW, 25 per cent in Victoria and 22 per cent in Queensland. eHarmony registered more men than women between the age of 18-34, however from 35 years on, the balance tips toward females. The most populated age bracket for both sexes was 24-35. “This age bracket is a peak social period in our lives,” Ms Mason said. “However, it seems that bars and nightclubs aren’t cutting it when it comes to finding a meaningful relation-

Who’s out there? A snapshot of Wodonga’s online daters. ship, which is also typically a priority for a lot of people in this age bracket.” “Plenty of research exists showing that many people meet their partner at work. However, a large number work in an environment which is not conducive to developing meaningful romantic relationships. “Others may be too time-poor, or just shrink at the thought of making small talk in a noisy bar after a long day at work. We have enough pressure during the day and don’t want to create more in our own time.” More than half of online daters have never been married, leading to the suggestion that while happy to date through traditional means, when it comes to finding someone they’re truly compatible with, many Australians turn to the internet.

“Completing a profile forces you to take a look at yourself and then decide what’s important to you in a long-term partner,” Ms Mason said. “It’s not something many of us honestly think about until it’s in front of us. Questions about how you resolve conflict are just as important as your personal interests when it comes to matching people on their compatibility. “It’s an unfortunate fact of modern life that many marriages end in divorce, which is reflected in our user base as one in five register as divorced. There’s a better chance for many of these people second time around via online dating, as many will be matched in ways they previously hadn’t.” Since 2007 eHarmony has been responsible for approximately 11,000 - or one in every 50 - Australian marriages.

Check your barbies, mate BORDER residents and community groups are being encouraged to check their gas and electrical barbecues and to be pro-active when it comes to maintenance in preparation for a hot summer. “Over the coming weeks in the lead-up to Christmas, many people across the region will be hosting their Christmas party barbecues with friends and colleagues,” Member for Albury Greg Aplin said. “If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to check that your barbecue is ready for the summer season. “Gas connections should be regularly checked for leaks using soapy water. Also regularly check hoses and fittings for damage or wear and replace these parts when needed. “Gas bottles must always be transported securely in the upright position in a cool space that is well ventilated - they must never be left in a closed vehicle. “Avoid using electric barbecues in the rain, near water or too close to pools and do not use barbecues with charcoal briquettes or other fuel products, including gas, inside confined spaces. “All gas appliances including barbecues and portable camping equipment must be certified to be legally sold in New South Wales. All electric barbecues must be approved and marked. “Owners of gas barbecues and portable appliances, including small cookers and camping lanterns, should check to make sure they are in good order and have the relevant approval marks before connecting to gas. “Always check for leaks before lighting, and when lit, be aware of

Conduct any checks in a clear, safe location. “Make barbecue gas and electrical safety a priority this summer.” You can find more information about gas and electrical product safety and check examples of gas and electrical approval marks on the Fair Trading website at www. fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or call133 220.

Kedar’s taste for life By KRYSTEN MANUEL LIFE hasn’t always been as straightforward as it is now for Kedar Sapkota. Waking up, kissing his wife and little girl goodbye and driving to work in his brand-new restaurant is a dream come true after living in a Nepali refugee camp for 18 years. But Mr Sapkota sees it as a chance to provide inspiration and support to the community he quickly grew to love. Localism is a passion for Mr Sapkota. Having grown up in a family of farmers having completed several degrees and qualifications in environmental science, he knows first-hand just how important buying local is. “Meat and vegetable products are all bought local to support the local farmers and growers,” he said. “Albury Wodonga is our home now, it’s beautiful living here, and the local community, I have no words to describe how supportive they are. We have a very good community here and they’ve helped me walk forward hand in hand to build this up as a common garden for everyone.” Mr Sapkota’s story began in 1992 at just 10 years old when he left Bhutan with his mother, father and three brothers due to political unrest. “We flew to the eastern part of Nepal and lived there for 18 years in a refugee camp,” he said. “It was a very difficult life and there’s still up to 45,000 people living in the camp. “Sometimes you didn’t know if you were going to wake up in the morning.” Mr Sapkota arrived in Australia in 2008, got a job with Mars Petcare and furthered his studies in environmental science thanks to a fascination with Australia’s weather. “When I arrived here, it was so hot,

it was during Black Saturday, it was terrible weather,” he said. “I had an interest to study the environment and how to manage it - my education from school level to Year 10 I finished inside the camp and and from Year 11 through a Bachelor of Science I did in India.” But it wasn’t smooth sailing just because he’s made it to Australia. “When I arrived here we were the first group from Bhutan in Albury Wodonga,” he said. “I had two little bags with me but I lost one with my change of clothes, I had nothing - no money, no luggage. “I lived in a one-bedroom unit for 18 months and I worked at the Mars Petcare Centre in Wodonga. I was doing a diploma, I had no car and no licence. I used my push-bike to get to Mars. They called me sometimes at 11pm and I had to pick up my pushbike and go, it was very hard. “My wife came here in 2011 and we got married. Whatever I saved I spent on that and the restaurant. “Wherever I’d go, to restaurants and things, I didn’t get any taste of what I like. Normally our food is fresh. “I planned to open the restaurant and on 1 November I was able to. My wife and me, she’s from Nepal, so this is called the Bhutanese, Nepali, Himalayan Restaurant. “The first reason I’m doing this is to give a taste to the people in Albury Wodonga, the second is for employment. Many people have problems getting employed. This is a good example for them - that if we work hard, we can do something in this new country. If we have skills and a hard-working ethic, definitely we can do something.” Mr Sapkota said his food is not only tasty but the Himalayan spices used also act as natural medicines.

Kedar Sapkota and his family are giving the Border a taste they’ve never experienced. “Our food is not too spicy, not too hot, it’s mild,” he said. “The spices support our digestive systems, purify blood, maintain glucose levels. We have an open kitchen so people can see how we prepare. We cook fresh and sell fresh, this has been

a practice passed down from generation to generation. “People who have had it say they like the food, they like the flavour and they like the taste.” Bhutanese, Nepali, Himalayan Restaurant and Cafe is located at 1094

Mate Street, North Albury. It is open Monday to Saturday, 8am-2pm, 6pm-10pm and on Sunday 3pm-8pm. Takeaway available and bookings essential. Call 02 6040 8488.

Suicide support online FOLLOWING the suicide prevention forums held in Albury and around the state last year, people will now be given practical support to guide conversations around suicide with the launch of a suite of new online resources by the NSW Government. Member for Albury, Greg Aplin said the new resources, Conversations Matter, were the first of their kind in the world and would support people wanting to talk about suicide and in doing so start to break down the barriers that prevented people from reaching out to one another. “Every year more than 2100 Australians die by suicide,” Mr Aplin said. “This is a national problem that is greater than it should be because all too often we are afraid to speak about it. “It has never been more important for people to reach out to one another

and start having a conversation about suicide. “Through Conversations Matter, individuals, schools, workplaces and community groups in the electorate will have access to information that will allow them to have safe and effective conversations about suicide. “Suicide prevention is everybody’s business and it is up to all of us to help reduce the stigma that surrounds suicide by talking about it and increasing awareness to better ensure that people at risk of suicide - as well as their families, friends and carers - are connected

with the treatment and support they need. “By visiting the Conversations Matter website, people can access a range of resources that will guide conversations to ensure people are supported to have safe conversations about suicide.” The resources will assist communities and professionals when: They want to know how to talk about suicide more generally; They are worried about someone and want to know what to say; and There has been a death and they want to know how best to handle individual

and community level conversations. Minister for Mental Health Kevin Humphries said the evidence-based resource had been developed by the NSW Mental Health Commission and the Hunter Institute of Mental Health with input from over 130 stakeholders and followed the series of suicide prevention forums held by the NSW Government last year. “Upon coming into government the NSW Liberals and Nationals held suicide prevention forums in communities across the state to give people the opportunity to help shape the govern-

ment’s response to suicide prevention,” Mr Humphries said. “What people told us was that they wanted to reach out and help those at risk of suicide, but didn’t know where to start or who to turn to. “We have listened and through Conversations Matter have given people the information they need to help support those at risk around them.” The Conversations Matter resource is complemented by the recently launched Communities Matter, which is a toolkit for community-driven suicide prevention that gives community leaders and local residents the ability to develop evidence-based suicide prevention strategies that meet their local needs. Belvoir’s special celebration THE past and the future will be celebrated together at Wodonga’s Belvoir Special School this month. As the school looks forward to moving into a new purpose-built facility next year, it will celebrate its 30th anniversary on November 23. An open day at the school’s present Bowman Court location will look at how it has grown since being established as a day training facility at the Murray Valley Centre in Wodonga. The school moved to Bowman Court in 1983 and was opened by the former member for Benambra and Shadow Health Minister Lou Lieberman. Mr Lieberman later became the Federal Member for Indi. Catering for students with disabilities, the school has become an integral part of the education system of the North East and southern New South Wales. From just a handful of students in 1973 it has now grown to now cater for 150 students with a full and part-time staff of 70. Staff include health professionals, teachers, teacher-aides and administration staff, with a budget of $4.5 million. Students range in age from five to 18 years. Principal Mr Jamie Gay said the school took students from Albury and Wodonga plus centres as far away as Rutherglen, Chiltern, Beechworth, Mt Beauty, Corryong and Jindera. Mr Gay said the 30-year reunion was aimed at attracting former students, their families and staff to visit the Bowman Court site before it was consigned to history by the pending move to the new Gayview Drive school. As part of the celebrations there will be an open day at the school from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 23 November where student art and other works will

Visitors will be able to tour the present site and also take bus tours to the new school site. That evening a cocktail party will

be held at Gypsy Gardens Receptions in Wodonga. Among the students who will be involved in the 30-year celebrations are the 2013 school captains Ethan Piddington and Paige McDonald.

But they will not be part of the new school, which is planned to open in the middle of next year, as they finish their secondary education at the end of this year. Both are planning to attend TAFE in 2014.

“There is no other job where you would expect to be on call 24/7 without a break. Also, these conditions have many faces, so we all need to know what they can look like. “Regularly check-in on new parents and contact PANDA or beyondblue if new mums or dads are showing signs of anxiety or depression. Postnatal depression is not a women’s issue, it affects both parents, children and whole families and without treatment it can change their lives forever. Early intervention and the right support leads to a faster recovery.” beyondblue ambassador and media personality Em Rusciano experienced postnatal depression after the birth of her second child when, rather than the elation she felt after her first pregnancy, she had trouble bonding with her baby. “This was made worse by the insomnia I was experiencing, and I felt like I was in a fog and couldn’t be the mother I wanted to be,” she said. “I was consumed by guilt because I thought I was a bad mum. But I was too scared to get help because I thought people would think I was a terrible person. “I finally went to a doctor who immediately diagnosed me with postnatal depression, which was a huge relief and the start of the road to recovery. That road has been tough and there have been ups and downs. But you just have to keep trying because feeling better is worth the effort.” PANDA ambassador and blogger Kylie Brown, who is married to Brisbane Lions footballer Jonathan Brown, said her experience had taught her these conditions are nothing to be ashamed of. THE Post and Antenatal Natal Depression Association (PANDA) and beyondblue are urging new parents to speak up during Postnatal Depression Awareness Week this week (17-23 November 2013). With up to one in 10 Australian women experiencing depression during pregnancy, around one in seven in the year following birth, and even more experiencing anxiety, these conditions affect tens of thousands of expectant and new mothers each year. Many new and expectant fathers also experience these conditions. To coincide with the week, beyondblue has launched its new Just Speak Up website at www.justspeakup.com.au People can share their story or read the experience of others who have experienced what they are going through. The site can help them realise they are not alone and can recover. beyondblue CEO Kate Carnell AO said help was easily accessible for women who may be struggling with depression and with the pressures of adapting to parenthood. Information is also available for the recovery of dads. Taking the first steps to get better is often the hardest part. “That is why, if you think that you or someone you care about might be struggling with depression or anxiety during or after pregnancy, you should visit the website,” she said. “But I would also urge all new parents to visit it and learn about the signs and symptoms of these conditions so that they can recognise them. The site is full of easy-to-access information and advice to guide people through what can be a terribly stressful and confusing time. “Feeling anxious or depressed during or after pregnancy is not a usual part of having a baby but, by visiting this site, people can find out how to start getting better.” PANDA CEO Belinda Horton said it was vital that new parents still made time for things they enjoyed outside family life. “Taking time away from the baby as an individual and with your partner is an important way to look after your mental health,” she said.

Letters “GOD’S law” and the oversupply of law enforcers. In times of difficulty, certainties, (including biblical ones) can be comforting. There can difficulty with “black and white” interpretations, divorced from the particular circumstances from which they come and from the communities in which they may be later applied. Applied in this way the Bible acts not as an anchor but a weight that drags an argument well below the surface of commonsense, humanity and compassion . In the abortion debate (where there are probably no absolute answers anyway) there are armies of self-appointed storm troopers eager to declare God’s judgement and administer heaped tablespoons of retribution. They claim to be “doing God’s work” but seem rather to be “after His job”. Please for God’s sake, (and the sake of some very vulnerable people with their own complicated realities) give us all a break and stop using the Bible as a weapon against people who are already down and claiming that the boots you are kicking them with actually belong to a God of love. Archdeacon Peter Macleod-Miller, St Matthew’s Anglican Church Albury.

Love a duck JUST letting the public know there is a family of ducks who love crossing the road on David Street near the netball courts around 7am onwards. I have to slow down to avoid them. I don’t want them to get killed. The council should put a sign up to warn drivers. Mavis Smunjiena, Albury.

Land of nod I WATCHED with interest the first sitting day of the 44th Australian Federal Parliament last week. The changes to standing orders enabled the Greens and Independents to hold their first joint media conference. I watched this with interest as one after the other spoke on the changes, while Ms McGowan

Free exchange YOUR newspaper has been very fair and generous in publishing an exchange of letters on the issue of abortion. Given several of the letters have concerned the ongoing pro-life witness outside the Englehardt abortion clinic, it is worth reporting, in the language of “witnessers” the world over, a recent “turnaround” at that clinic. Instead of being aborted, a baby’s life was saved. A couple, reluctant to abort their child but convinced there was no other alternative, encountered those witnessing. Warmed by their genuineness, they turned away from the abortion clinic. They went instead to the Women’s Life Centre in Lavington where a range of options and practical support was immediately put in motion. The alternative for that baby, had those witnessing that day not been there, doesn’t bear contemplation. All social engineering is preceded by verbal engineering. E Mourik’s letter Respect the Rules (23/10) is an example of this. By describing prolife activists as “religious demonstrators” the writer would have the readers believe abortion is a religious issue, when it is a human rights issue. The founder of the American abortion movement, abortionist Dr Bernard Nathanson, himself responsible for 60,000 abortions, was an atheist when he stopped doing abortions. The advent of the ultrasound forced him to recognise the humanity of the unborn child. He only became “religious” when faced with the enormity of his actions. Denise M. Cameron, President, Pro life Victoria (Inc), Albury.

Border dispute I HAVE been reading with interest the correspondence concerning the antics of the anti-abortionist/pro-life activists. It seems very clear to me. These ‘concerned citizens’ are trying to impose their attitudes, values and choices on others by domination through the use of force, threat, coercion, intimidation or aggression. Even though they have been requested to stop this behaviour, it is repeated and habitual. Isn’t this called BULLYING? Victoria’s anti-bullying legislation, known as Brodie’s Law, commenced in June 2011 and made serious bullying a crime punishable by up to 10 years in jail. Also in Victoria is the Abortion Law Reform Act, which was passed in 2008 and allows abortion for any reason up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. Perhaps we need to move the clinic in Englehardt Street across the river? Julie King, Lavington.

THIS festive season, DoSomething! are again helping Australians to save money by reducing food waste. Each year 450,000 garbage trucks worth of food is wasted in Australia. That’s eight billion tonnes of edible household food. On December 26, DoSomething! is rolling out National Leftovers Day. The day encourages Aussies to use up all their Christmas leftovers and make the most of food all year round. Organised by advocacy group DoSomething! as part of their FoodWisecampaign, National Leftovers Day helps Australians to save money and help the environment. Leftovers currently account for 27 per cent of food that’s wasted in Australian households each year. Fresh food such as vegetables and fruit account for 33 per cent of wasted food. Over the Christmas period, some of Australia’s favourite celebrity chefs will be sharing their favourite leftovers recipes on DoSomething’s FoodWise website. Australians will be able to plan their Christmas meals using DoSomething’s unique online meal planning facility. Users get to select recipes that use up existing food already in their fridge, freezer or pantry. It’s a great tool for saving money over the Christmas period. DoSomething’s national food waste statistics were audited and confirmed byABC Fact Check in October 2013. For details on household food waste, check out DoSomething’s food waste infographic at: http://foodwise.com.au/foodwaste/food-waste-fast-facts/

Get ready for the season FOR a number of Australians, November marks the unwelcome start of the storm and fire season. From storms and fires to cyclones and floods, Australia is prone to some of the world’s most extreme weather conditions. The intensity of storm and fire season began earlier than usual this year, with the east coast of Australia already experiencing unexpectedly high temperatures, early bushfires and gathering storm cells. The simple act of preparing your property and having an emergency kit ready could make a life-changing difference this storm and fire season. The following Home Emergency Kit Checklist will help you be prepared, especially when the power goes out. A torch; A portable radio; A range of batteries - AAA, AA, 9V, C and D; First aid kit; Sterilised wipes to clean cuts; All important documents, including birth certificates, passports and licences, are in a safe carry case; A list of emergency contact numbers;

NOVEMBER 17-24, 2013

Heed fire warnings WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: LAST year, Victoria experienced more than 4400 bush and grassfires. Fire warnings are issued when a fire has started and residents need to stay informed and take action. There are three different levels of warnings – Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency Warning. Warnings aren’t necessarily issued in any order – fires can start and spread so fast the first warning issued could be an Emergency Warning. It’s everyone’s responsibility to understand the different types of warnings and how to access them. Residents should never wait to receive an official warning before leaving. Bushfires can

start, spread and become uncontrollable quickly – threatening homes and lives within minutes. There are different situations when people might need to monitor and check for fire warnings and updates: On a hot, dry, windy day when fires can start suddenly at any time. During summer, check regularly for updates. On a fire risk day when you’ve left early or are preparing to do so ensure the route planned is safe and stay up to date about fires in the area so you know when it’s safe to return. If people can see or smell smoke in the air, find out what’s going on. Check for signs of fire in your area. Always be aware of conditions around

¡ ¡ ¡ ¡

you such as smoke, flames, embers and noise. Look and listen for information for surrounding towns if your suburb or town may not be mentioned, and stay in touch with family, friends and neighbours for extra sources of information. Always use more than one source for fire warnings: Go to cfa.vic.gov.au; Download the FireReady smartphone app; Check CFA’s social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter; Listen to local radio; Ring the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡

Plan, prepare, check again YOU’VE cleared the gutters, cut back the grass and tackled the undergrowth – but that might not mean that you are fully prepared for fire this summer. CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said research showed Victorians were great at carrying out the easy to do preparation tasks in the lead-up to the fire season. “But it’s actions like talking to your CFA brigade about the risk where you live and making a decision with your family about when you’ll leave and where you’ll go that could save your life, he said. Fire risk varies from city fringe areas next to grassland to rural areas close to grass or bushland. For information on the risk in your area and tips on leaving early, you can talk to your local CFA brigade or visit cfa.vic.gov.au. Fire planning and preparation should include a conversation with your house-

hold at the start of summer about when you will leave before a fire and where you will go. You also need to decide where you will shelter if you get caught out and cannot leave your property or area. “Make sure everyone you live with knows these plans, so you’re all clear about what you’ll do on a fire risk day, Mr Ferguson said. “You should also pack an emergency kit at the start of summer so you’re ready to go any time. “This should include important paperwork and essentials like mobile phones, medications, change of clothes and water. If your kit is already packed, it’s easier to grab it and go. “Finally, remember to talk to friends, family and neighbours who may need help leaving early before a fire, he said. “The responsibility for surviving the fire season is shared between emergency services and the community – we

allshare the responsibility for our community’s safety, he said. Plan and prepare for fire this summer: Do you understand the fire risk where you live? Talk to your local CFA brigade and find out your level of risk, or visit cfa.vic.gov.au Talk to your household about what you’re going to do on a fire risk day, where you’ll go and when you’ll leave. Pack an emergency kit so you’re ready to go. For more information on what to include, go to cfa.vic.gov.au. Download the FireReady smartphone app. Plan ahead so you don’t have to make decisions at the last minute. For more information on planning and preparation this summer, go to cfa. vic.gov.au or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

Use ratings to judge risk FIRE Danger Ratings are one of the best ways to understand the daily fire risk so you know how to respond to protect yourself and your family. Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley said Fire Danger Ratings tell you how bad a fire would be if one started. “As the ratings increase, so does your risk of fire, he said, “This summer, you could be at risk of uncontrollable fires on Severe, Extreme and Code Red days. Talk to your household about where you’ll go on these days and when you’ll leave. Fire Danger Ratings are based on the weather conditions and other factors, such as how much dry vegetation there is. Hot, dry, windy days are the worst weather conditions for fire. Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data up to four days in advance, and are declared by fire weather district.

The three most important ratings to look out for are Severe, Extreme and Code Red. Code Red signals the worst conditions for a grass or bushfire and means that if a fire was to start, it would be uncontrollable. Most houses are not designed or constructed to withstand Code Red conditions. Leaving high-risk areas the night before a Code Red day or early in the day is the safest option. A rating of Severe or Extreme fire danger signals that if a fire starts and takes hold, it will be unpredictable and fast moving. If you live in a high-risk area, and your house is not prepared and you are not able to defend it, leaving early in the day is your safest option. Check Fire Danger Ratings at cfa.vic.gov.au, by downloading the FireReady smartphone app or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

Lend a helping hand DOES someone you know need help leaving early from a bushfire area? Fires can start and spread quickly wherever there is grass, scrub or bush – including on the edge of cities and towns. For anyone living in a high-risk bushfire or grassfire area, the safest option is to leave early on fire risk days. For those who are frail, have a physical disability, or have trouble thinking clearly or acting quickly in stressful situations, it is even more important to leave early on Severe, Extreme and Code Red days. Leaving home on fire risk days requires careful planning and commitment and takes time.

This fire season, think about any family members, friends or neighbours in your local community who might require your help to plan for and leave early on fire risk days. They will need longer to get organised, and might need practical assistance with transport to leave early. They might need help planning what to do with their pets, what to take with them (such as medications) and where to go that is comfortable and safe – using reliable transport. To help with planning, download a free copy of the Red Cross Bushfires – preparing to leave early plan from www.cfa.vic.gov.au/redcrossplan or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

Four acts in one By KRYSTEN MANUEL WATCHING a woman fold herself into a small fish-tank is always worth a look, but if that’s not your cup of tea never fear there’s something for everyone in The Great Gondos Variety Show. “The Great Gondos was initially my partner and myself,” performer Daniel Oldaker said. “We’ve been working together for many years but we decided to work with some friends of ours and make it a variety show. It’s a combination of many skits and bits we’ve been performing around the world for the last 18 years.” The Great Gondos skilfully fuse physical comedy and new circus to create highly accessible performances appealing to audiences of all ages. Featuring Oldaker, Rani Huszar, Leighton Stevens and Eloise Green, this team of sideshow/ circus performers will amuse, delude, shock, impress and entertain audiences of all ages. “It’s a combination of four various acts that have been touring the world rolled into one show,” Oldaker said. “It has a bit of something for kids, adults and older people. Burlesque beauty back in town By KRYSTEN MANUEL FROM Catholic schoolgirl to burlesque sensation, The Strawberry Siren described as ‘the Tarantino version of burlesque ... sexy and dangerous’ is on her way back to the Border. Having grown up in Wodonga and as a former student of St Augustine’s and Wodonga High, Strawberry has fond memories of her time before the bigsmoke. “I loved it – I grew up in the Flying Fruit Fly Circus so that definitely made for an interesting and exciting childhood,” she said. Having taken out the title of Miss Burlesque Australia 2013, Strawberry is spreading her delicate wings and moving to the UK after her recent triumphant world tour which saw her perform at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the New Orleans, Kansas City, Vancouver, London and Stockholm Burlesque Festivals - but not before gracing the Albury Entertainment Centre. The Strawberry Siren has been dazzling burlesque audiences for the past six years, having performed since the tender age of 11 when she landed a place in the world renowned Flying Fruit Fly Circus – a background which has led to her becoming a force to be reckoned with on the burlesque scene. “I love the creativity involved, the artistic licence to do whatever you want, really. There’s no rules about what you can and can’t do. It’s a fun way to express yourself,” she said. “Burlesque is still a performance art so I’ve been able to take my years of performance training from the circus to enhance my burlesque. Burlesque and circus are all part of the cabaret world, they all fit within the same family, but there’s definitely more sexuality involved. Performing in the circus is about showing your skills and performing in burlesque is about showing your sexuality. “I’m able to throw in a few circus skills here and there and spice things up with a random cartwheel and bits and pieces of acrobatics. I still do aerial acts as well.” Strawberry will be joined on tour by fellow national burlesque title holders -

Bad Grandpa runs gamut of emotions By KRYSTEN MANUEL Movie: Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa Starring: Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll Director: Jeff Termaine

Duration: 92 minutes I BREATHE a sigh of a relief and my eyes brim with emotion. Finally, amid the sea of impotent, pathetic humour desperately clawing at audiences this year, there is a comedy that evokes thigh-slapping, face-cramping, seatwetting laughter. Bravo Johnny Knoxville – what a visionary! The wife of Irving Zisman, 86, has just passed away, and he couldn’t be happier.

Finally, Irving is free to get amongst the ladies. But after a funeral that had its guests looking like a row of laughing clown sideshow games, Irving is left with an unlikely companion, eightyear-old Billy. In a quick pit-stop on her way to jail, Billy’s mother dumps him with his grandfather. This turn of events is less than ideal, and so Irving embarks on a cross country trip to palm Billy off to his deadbeat father. Along the way, Irving teaches Billy about the true essence of life – drinking, strippers, sex, stealing, vandalism and projectile diarrhoea. Going into this film, it’s important to know that almost all the people featuring in it are not aware of what they’re part of. They were painstak-

ingly gathered and put into seemingly harmless situations, only to find themselves at the extreme end of shocked, angry, sad, offended and even guilty. You will laugh with tears rolling down your cheeks, your jaw will drop on many occasions, but most surprisingly you may even shed a tear in one of the more earnest moments – yes, there are some. Among the farts, the swearing, the fights and the downright child abuse, the relationship between Irving and Billy could well be the most heartwarming and touching this year’s cinemas have seen. For someone who does not like children, I left thinking ‘I’ll have that one though!’

Quality streaming is available and shortly it will have affordable products capable of streaming vinyl-type performances. The concern is that streaming will be commodity categorised with economy brands and economy made

TRU Hifi is almost ready for its move, with new-look showrooms to demonstrate some of the best equipment available. Its model is different to a typical home entertainment electrical store model in that we had to encourage the regional markets to travel to Albury rather than take the punt online. Tru Hifi has 80 per cent of its clients travel from outside Albury to audition fine audio and visual equipment. The bulk of external clients have come from those unable to source the higher level of products from their home town. Tru Hifi has around 140 brands available across all the premium product cat-

From the street, this property is modern and very neat, with no expense spared in the landscaping department. Parking is not a problem with a cleverly positioned area for extra

The main bathroom features a gorgeous, deep bath and separate toilet for that added convenience. Every door in the house is fitted with security doors, including the laundry door. Straight across from the kitchen is the outdoor entertainment area. Completely undercover, with ceiling fans and even shade cloths for the hotter

The heart of the house is open plan between the kitchen, lounge and dining areas. Following the same modern finishes, the kitchen is generously proportioned, with extra large walk-in pantry, ample storage space, dishwasher and gas cooking. Ducted heating and cooling flows through the home. A theatre room hidden at the back of the house is a real gem. Large enough to accommodate a sizable pyjama party, this room is also not completely detached from the rest of the living area, but private enough to get the most out

guests and large, remote control double garage. The garage is accessible from inside the home, but also provides a second roller door for rear entry. Through the front door a wide entryway welcomes guests, with the sunny formal lounge room to the right. The master bedroom is queen-size, with two vertical feature windows, generous walk-in robe and ensuite with the works - there’s even a his-and-hers vanity area, and all in modern, classy neutral tones.

The pergola wraps almost totally around the house, leading to the beautifully landscaped yard - and number 31’s second gem. It’s a separate Ranbuild built, powered workshop with roller-door which presents a myriad of possibilities for the tradesman, handyman, business owner or even the hobbyist. Don’t lose hope in housing market FOR those dreaming of owning their first home, it has been a nerve-wracking week. For some, new Australian Bureau of Statistics figures may suggest that dream may be out of reach. They showed the proportion of first home buyers in the housing market at its lowest level since those records began 22 years ago. But while there are housing affordability concerns, first home buyers need not abandon hope. Interest rates are at a record low, with the Reserve Bank cash rate at just 2.5 per cent. So this is an excellent time to obtain cheap finance and start repaying your mortgage with lower repayments.

Despite the publicity about first-time buyers, there are still affordable properties out there - if you know where to look. The key is research. Decide on your preferred suburbs and research prices for the kind of home you hope to buy. Find them on the Internet, attend the auctions and see what they sell for. Get to know the local agents and talk about what you can afford and what is available. Also, median prices are available free at reiv.com.au/Property-Research/ Median-Prices. If your preferred area is beyond your

reach, don’t despair. Consider your options: can family members help you raise a larger deposit? Can tighter budgeting mean you can afford to pay a little more? How about considering property on the border of your preferred area, but cheaper. For example, a three bedroom house in Lara has a median price of $305,000 while in neighbouring Corio it is $221,000. And hold onto your dream - don’t be deterred by the publicity. After all, there are still suburbs cheaper than during boom times and many banks are willing to lend a higher proportion of purchase price.

How to bid at auction AUCTION season is in full swing this year with a record number of auctions held in the first weekend of November. The REIV offers a few tips for potential buyers on how to bid at auction. Before you attend the auction, ensure that you have a plan including knowing when you intend to commence bidding and at what price point you should stop. On the day of the auction ensure you arrive early and make a final inspection of the property. You can check the contract of sale, vendor’s statement, and auction rules which should all be on display for at least 30 minutes before the auction commences. If you have any questions about the auction rules, ask the agent in attendance. Before the auction commences, be

sure to position yourself where you can see the auctioneer and where they can see and hear you. Make your bids clear by announcing them and raising your hand. During the auction, the auctioneer should announce if the property is “on the market if the owner’s reserve price has been reached. If the reserve price isn’t reached, the property will be passed in to the highest bidder, or on a vendor bid. If it is passed in, the owner must first negotiate with the highest bidder for the purchase of the property. So if the auctioneer announces that the property is going to be passed in, it is a good strategy at this point to make sure you are the highest bidder to secure this option to

negotiate with the owner. Once the property’s passed in, it is too late. The auctioneer can’t re-open the auction to accommodate a late bid and override this option that someone else has secured ahead of you. While the owner needs to negotiate with the highest bidder, if you are not prepared to meet the owner’s asking price, the owner may end negotiations with you immediately and start negotiating with another interested party. If you are not confident about bidding at auction you should consider using an REIV buyer’s agent, who can be engaged to assist with all aspects of the process, including the bidding. Looking for a new family pet or best friend to love? Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue is here to help, with a variety of puppies and dogs waiting to be re-homed with a loving new owner. Most dogs are unclaimed from the Albury Pound or are surrendered by members of the public. Each dog has passed a temperament test before being placed into foster care. The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $340 plus $40 for council registration if adopted in NSW. The fee includes a veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, C5 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. For cats and kittens the fee is $200 which includes veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, F4 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue endeavours to carefully match dogs with their new owners to ensure dogs are placed in the best environment for their future wellbeing.

Small wheels keep on turnin’ By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Albury Wodonga Mountain Bike Club hosted a Kids Mountain Bike Participation Day last weekend, attracting over 40 potential new members for 2014. “It’s something for them to do - a sport that we all enjoy, so we introduced them to mountain biking,” organiser Marcus Richardson said. “I counted over 40 kids. We started four years go and had 15 at the first event - we’ve grown a lot. “The kids events are standalone events on a Sunday morning. There’s races members can attend, trail maintenance days, if adults want to be involved in the committee that’s available too, and there’s a social event at the end of the year with annual prizes.” Mr Richardson said mountain biking was available to children of any fitness and skill level. “Most kids have a bike anyway,” he said.

“We’re not promoting first, second, third, it’s about getting out there and having a go. “It’s exercises, its outdoors, it’s in the bush, they get to mingle with other kids, parents get to mingle with other parents. “There’s three grades, C is for beginners, B for intermediate and A for better riders. They’re different lengths to cater for the kids’ energy levels.” The Albury Wodonga Mountain Bike Club will close over Christmas but re-open for 2014 on 16 February, with subsidised membership for $15. “Everyone who attends gets an encouragment award, so next year that will be Monumental Ice Cream and Bakers Delight to each kid so they can go and get something after the event,” Mr Richardson said. Local Sport Hoops at midnight By KRYSTEN MANUEL ORGANISERS of Albury’s Midnight Basketball are looking for volunteers. “We have team managers, team manager helpers, catering, and the Rotary groups take it in turns to score,” Carevan’s Jodie Tiernan said. “You can significantly see the difference in these kids’ lives. We care and we’re showing them there’s something else out there. It’s a safe environment for them to come along to and just be kids.” Midnight Basketball was founded in America and designed to help youths who had become disengaged from the community get off the street and into a safe environment. Before they can play, participants must attend a workshop on life skills and building confidence. “They started it in Redfern, it took off really well and now it’s all around Australia,” Ms Tiernan said. “It started in Albury four years ago. Albury Hume Rotary Group’s Rod Bramich is our chairman and all the other local Rotary Groups got Midnight Basketball started with an alliance with the PCYC. “They ran a term of it, Carevan

came along on the last night, did a barbecue and got to know how it ran. “Because Carevan goes to Westside Community Centre on a Wednesday night, we’d built up a good relationship with these kids so they asked me if I would like to get Carevan involved. “We want to help as many people as we can and work together so we came on board and I’ve managed the tournament for three years. “It’s going really well now and we’ve gone from strength to strength because we have a lot of volunteers who want to help out. “We run it in term two and term four for eight weeks. So the kids are getting a Friday night every eight weeks in a row - they come, they get bussed in and bussed home. They start at 7pm and are home at midnight - hence the term Midnight Basketball.” Many of the youths come from disadvantaged and troubled homes, but Ms Tiernan said the volunteers and herself take it all in their stride, striving to make as much of a positive impact on the youths as possible. “None of us ever judge because you don’t know what goes on in

people’s lives and I think it’s a really nice thing to watch these kids mature over the last four years. “It makes you feel like you really are making a difference.” Each week Midnight Basketball plays host to anywhere between 40

Women only give it a tri By KRYSTEN MANUEL IN THE name of charity, the Albury Wodonga Triathlon Club (AWTC) will hold their fifth ‘women’s only’ mini-tri on Sunday 24 November at Allans Flat. Founding member of AWTC Nadia Mellor said the race was all about encouraging women to get out and about and become more familiar with the sport. “I’m a councillor in practice and every day I’m telling people to come exercise,” she said. “It’s more of a participation event than a race. This is a way of getting them out, getting them exercising and geting the stress out of their body. “We encourage all ages and abilities to come along and have a go. You don’t need a fancy bike, just one that is in good working order, a

helmet and a pair of runners.” “If the swim is a concern, the club will have members available to swim the 300 metres and we’re also encouraging women to form a team and just complete one leg each,” Ms Mellor said the event had been growing annually. Starting at around 30 people in the first year, the 2012 event welcomed around 100 entrants. Each year proceeds are donated to a women’s charity, including Bravehearts, the senior girls at Belvoir Special School, the special-ed girls at Tallangatta Secondary College and last year, the McGrath Foundation breast care nurses. “Last year we were able to give $1000, so hopefully this year we’ll be able to give at least that much to the Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group,” Ms Mellor said. The event will follow the regu-
