Labor road plan By NATALIE GALLENTI THE State Opposition has vowed to transform public transport, remove some of the worst traffic bottlenecks and boost economic growth across Victoria in its latest transport plan unveiled last week. Project 10,000 is the Labor Party’s alternative to the $8 billion East West tunnel and promises to: Remove 50 of the most congested and dangerous level crossings, including Furlong Rd and Main Rd in St Albans, Relieve pressure on the Werribee, Sunbury and Williamstown lines, And, deliver 10,000 new construction jobs. Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said his party’s transport policy focused on the issues of safety, congestion and improving public transport. “We know that congestion is a significant issue - we know as our state grows, as our economy grows, we need to do more and more to get people to where they need to be,” Mr Andrews told Star. He said removing the 50 worst level crossings was a priority particularly in Melbourne’s West. “Safety is going to be our number one priority. Some of these (level crossings), particularly in the West, have been the subject of really

tragic incidents and we will waste no time in allocating the money and removing these level crossings. “I can put this right and will with the support of voters across the West and Victoria.” Melton MP Don Nardella said Project 10,000 is about providing funding in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. Mr Nardella said with the strong growth occurring across the City of Melton, traffic issues needed to be taken seriously and solved immediately. Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins was on the sub-committee of Shadow Ministers that supported Mr Andrews with the policy development and said the package would deliver real outcomes for residents in the Western Suburbs. “This transport investment plan will deliver over 10,000 new jobs, there are many construction workers and tradespeople in the West that will benefit from the employment opportunities that this plan will deliver,” Ms Hutchins said. Koroit MP Marlene Kairouz said the policy offered voters a very clear choice when they go to vote at the 2014 State election in just over 12 months. “Over the past decade there have been almost 200 level crossings crashes, sadly this has resulted in many deaths, including a number in our community,” Ms Kairouz said.

POLICE are seeking information in relation to a violent armed robbery and a milk bar in Melton West earlier this month. The incident occurred at about 8.30pm on Sunday 10 November when four males wearing masks entered the store and assaulted the lone staff member and held him to the ground. A considerable amount of cash, cigarettes, mobile phones and a computer were stolen. Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks said the victim was traumatised by the incident. Meanwhile, a Taylors Hill woman was terrorised in her Loddon St home this month. On 11 November the victim awoke to find a man in her bedroom. The woman screamed and other occupants came to her assistance as the offender ran from the house. The only description the victim can give is that the offender is a tall male. Catholic Regional College was the target of thieves over the Melbourne Cup weekend. The school was broken into on three separate occasions. On at least one occasion two males on push bikes were involved. Music and computer equipment were stolen. A Display Home in Bulmans Rd, Melton West was broken into between Wednesday, 6 November and Saturday, 9 November. It was the second burglary at this house in recent times. On this occasion ornaments and picture frames were stolen.

COBURN Ward councillor Sophie Ramsey has told Star she was honoured to recently receive an award after completing a dozen years in local government. Cr Ramsey, who received the award from the Municipal Association of Victoria for completing 10 years of service on Melton City Council, said she takes great pride in representing the community and believes her years of experience has given her a strong voice within the rapidly-growing community. “I love representing the community ... to be there for a number of years has given me a good understanding of what the community wants,” Cr Ramsey said. “The community is very good at keeping you grounded ... they tell you when they’re not happy... but they tell you when they’re happy. “With years of experience, you are still continually learning, but you know how to represent the community better. Every day brings a new challenge but it is an exciting one. “We can’t make everyone happy, but we try to give people respect ... and a voice.” She said ultimately it is the community that has kept her in the job for over a decade and it has been a “pleasure” representing and being involved in the many facets of the City of Melton.

Deadly hot cars
Robbery probe: cops make appeal

POLICE are once again calling for public assistance in relation to an armed robbery that occurred early in 2012. Last week, police made a public appeal for witnesses who may have information on the incident that took place at a licensed venue on Reserve Rd in Melton on 2 January 2012. It is alleged two masked men armed with sawn-off rifles approached two female staff and a male security guard in the venue’s car park after they had closed the business about 1.20am. The men forced the women into nearby bushes before one of the men went looking for the security guard. The man then confronted the security guard who resisted and a struggle ensued. Both men fell to the ground and the security guard managed to pull off the man’s balaclava. The second man came to the aid of his partner and the security guard was overpowered and ordered to join the other staff at gunpoint. One of the female staff members was then forced to re-enter the business and remove a large quantity of cash from the safe. The men threatened the staff with retribution if they co-operated with police before leaving them bound and gagged. Police have released images of the man, whose balaclava came off during the robbery. He is described as Caucasian in appearance, about 183cm tall, in his early twenties, with short blonde hair and clean shaven. WITH the warmer weather approaching, paramedics are warning parents of the dangers of leaving their children locked in cars. Statistics released by Ambulance Victoria last week revealed there were an alarming 17 callouts to paramedics reporting that someone was locked in a car in Melton last summer. The staggering figure has left
paramedics and police shaking their heads. Ambulance Victoria group manager Brett Drummond said leaving children in a car could prove deadly. “Tragically, there have been cases of children dying in hot cars in Victoria in recent years,” Mr Drummond said. “Babies and young children can’t regulate their body temperature like adults can, so being left in a hot car can quickly become life-threatening.
Mr Drummond said despite public perception it didn’t have to be a scorching hot day for the car to quickly heat up. “Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that even on a 29-degree day, the inside of a car can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and hit 60 degrees within 20 minutes. “This can be catastrophic and unfortunately in the past there have been cases of children dying in hot cars. for a few minutes is not acceptable.” The data also revealed there were four callouts in Melton West, three in Hillside and nine in Caroline Springs. In Melbourne’s West, Hoppers Crossing had the highest number of callouts with 24. Ambulance Victoria qualified the data by stating that not all incidents involved children, with adults accounting for a small amount of reports.
Jack’s a leader with persistence A BURNSIDE teenager is ready to tackle the big wide world after participating in the Whitten Project. Jack Bartkowicz, 15, recently graduated from the program, hosted by the Western Bulldogs and supported by Melton City Council, which offers youngsters the chance to engage with Australian sporting role models and with an AFL club. A keen cricketer and footballer Jack jumped at the opportunity to expand on his leadership skills. “I’ve met Tutty (Jason Tutt), Dale Morris, Brendan McCartney, Jason McCartney, and they’ve really touched base and shown me that persistence in being a leader is a really good thing,” Jack said. “Jason McCartney came in and talked about how the Bali Bombings affected his life, and persistence really got him back where he was, playing footy again - that really changed my perspective on life as well.” The Brookside College school captain said he now lived by the motto “persistence is the key to life”. “You have to keep trying to learn - not only that, you have to keep trying to be able to succeed.” And the motivated youngster is already practising what he preaches after organising an after-school football clinic at his school with resounding success. “A few kids there who had never played footy were learning how to play, which was really excellent to see”. Jack said he hoped to study sports science when he completes VCE.

Fire action call AS part of Fire Action Week, Melton City Council is encouraging residents to prepare for the upcoming 2013/2014 fire season. Crossing call gains strength By ALESHA CAPONE THOUSANDS of people worried about safety and congestion have called for the Melton Highway level crossing near Watergardens Train Station to be upgraded. Dorian Papadopoulos started the Facebook group titled ’Melton Highway NEEDS an Underpass/ Overpass’ on 30 October and the page has since gathered almost 2500 supporters. Mr Papadopoulos said as a frequent user of the Melton Highway, he allows for 20-30 minute-plus delays to get to Watergardens or onto the Calder Freeway, even though he lives five minutes away. “Since the Sydenham metro line has been extended to Sunbury, it’s become a disastrous and dangerous crossing, with many drivers becoming impatient and illegally running the red lights at the crossing,” he said. “I don’t want us to become the next Main Rd on St Albans, where their local community has been fighting for an underpass at that level crossing for over 30 years.” Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins has launched a petition calling on the State Government to fix the highway crossing. Ms Hutchins said the heavy traf-
fic was also dangerous for students at two secondary schools near the crossing, as they sometimes illegally crossed the rails while the boomgates lowered. “I am concerned about that issue and would hate to see a tragedy occur,” Ms Hutchins said. She has encouraged residents to sign the petition to help get the Melton Highway crossing included in the Opposition’s plan to upgrade 50 of the state’s worst level crossings, if they are elected next year. Labor has selected 40 crossings for the list and will decide the remaining 10 after community feedback. The RACV’s roads and traffic manager, Dave Jones, said the 2012 ‘Red Spot’ survey highlighted the Melton Highway crossing as a site residents are concerned about. “The Melton Highway was the number one location in Taylors Lakes for congestion,” Mr Jones said. A spokesperson for the Minister for Public Transport and Roads, Terry Mulder, said the former Labor Government “had 11 years to do something about the Melton Highway level crossing, but didn’t”. “The Labor Opposition’s transport plan also ignores the Melton Highway level crossing,” the spokesperson said.

The Exercise Metabolism unit is currently recruiting participants for two clinical trials. The first one involves a one-day health check at VU’s St Albans campus. The three-hour health check includes a genetic test that looks at an obesity risk gene known as FTO, an oral glucose tolerance test, a body composition assessment and blood pressure and nutritional
body composition and appetite regulating hormones. VU is seeking 84 women between 20 and 50 years who are overweight based on their Body Mass Index. “Ultimately, both projects will examine means of reducing mortality associated with an overweight and obese population, and the goal is to inevitably help reduce the social health and economic burden that these conditions have on society,” second year doctorate student Jessica Danaher said. Hawks pick lone Jet By ADEM SARICAOGLU EXCITING Western Jets utility James Sicily lived every young footballer’s dream last week. On Thursday AFL premier Hawthorn used its pick 56 to snare the 18-year-old former Keilor junior - who turned out to be the only Jet selected in this year’s national draft. “I’m pretty stoked and pretty excited to get stuck into it,” Sicily told Star the following day. “They’re the best team currently going around, so I’m looking forward to learning off the senior players and going from there.” Watching the draft from home, Sicily admits he became a touch nervy when Essendon, who along with Hawthorn contacted him earlier in the week, took extra time to make its selection at pick 55. Eventually the Bombers went with South Australian midfielder Orazio Fantasia, allowing the Hawks to swoop on Sicily with the next pick. “When it got into the 50s I was getting pretty nervous,” Sicily said. “I knew that with the last two picks, 55 and 56, that if I didn’t get picked by then I probably wasn’t going to get picked, because they were the two clubs I spoke to during the week.”
Jets coach Torin Baker, who prior to the draft rated Sicily his side’s best chance of landing on an AFL list, was pleased to see the Vic Metro representative get to Hawthorn. “I’m very excited for James,” Baker said. “The fact that he’s gone to a really good club like Hawthorn is fantastic for him and everyone at the Jets is really excited for him.” Used largely as a roaming utility for much of his top-age year, Sicily became regarded as one of the more versatile players going around in the TAC Cup this season. Sicily’s strong marking ability became a feature of his game throughout the year but it was his excellent result in the 20-metre sprint at the draft combine that really turned heads. While acknowledging a strong summer in the gym will be essential, Baker can see Sicily slotting into Hawthorn’s forward line before establishing himself as a midfielder later into his AFL career. “He’s obviously going to have to put on some size to get him in a position where they see fit,” Baker said. “I personally think he’ll be a forward at first that’ll probably play in the midfield later on as his body develops.” Meanwhile Jake Greiser and David Iaccarino, who were both overlooked on Thursday, will be hoping to join their Jets team-mate in the AFL ranks with this week’s rookie draft taking place on Wednesday.
Dominic dominates IN ONLY his seventh season of racing, 30-yearold Melton resident Dominic Dudkiewicz has taken out the Footscray Cycling Club’s 2013 Road Aggregate after contesting 23 gruelling road races in and around Melbourne’s West. Having won the 2013 Criterium Aggregate earlier in the year, Dudkiewicz is the club’s most complete rider, topping both disciplines, a fact he attributes to his competitive nature. “I’m naturally a very competitive person so the competitive aspect of cycling is definitely a big part of the appeal and is certainly what gets me up on a cold, dark winter morning to train,” he said. “It’s a great feeling when the training pays off in the form of a race win.”
