Lynn Glover director of the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority that registers accreditation education providers, said neither Narconon, nor the Association for Better Living and Education, under which name the planning application had been lodged, were registered by the VRQA. “Organisations may operate as education facilities and provide nonaccredited training,” she said. “I have reviewed the Narconon website and they do not purport to offer accredited training.” Ms Fox however said that concerns raised about Narconon facilities in other parts of the world should sound alarm bells about the lack of regulation and accountability. “In other countries, there are numerous examples of a monitoring body having a direct impact on the drug and rehabilitation services provided by Narconon,” she said. “Who is going to hold them accountable here?” Paul Jackson, spokesperson for SayNoToNarcononinWarburton group said the group had been advised it was unlikely that the matter would go before Yarra Ranges Council this year. The Mail did not receive a response from Narconon regarding concerns about accountability and their status as an ‘education facility’.

WARBURTON residents opposed to the relocation of a drug rehabilitation in the township say despite reassurances, there is no accountability for the safe running of the facility. Narconon is proposing to move their isolated East Warburton drug rehabilitation centre into Warburton township, close to homes and the local primary school. The planning application before Yarra Ranges Council seeks approval to run the centre at the Green Gables Conference Centre as an ‘education facility’ providing residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation. In a letter to the Mail, resident Nicole Fox called on Yarra Ranges’ town planners to reject the planning application, saying it is not accredited and not accountable as it does not receive government funding for its programs. “It is not subject to the regulations imposed by the Victorian Department of Health on similar hospital-based rehabilitation facilities. There is no accreditation process. There is no regulatory body that maintains a standard of practice,” Ms Fox wrote. Her claims have been verified by the State Government’s Health and Education departments that say Narconon doesn’t come under their watch. Health Department spokesman Graham Walker said drug services that received government funding were on service agreements, but that Narconon didn’t fit that model. “The advice we have is that this program is based on education and counselling and there is nothing that prevents people calling themselves educators or counsellors - they are not

DIXONS Creek Primary School is literally building a school library from scratch. With the mobile library service no longer available, and the nearest public library in Lilydale, school principal Sharon Walker said the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 87 children and their families were missing out on the opportunity to borrow and read the books they love. Adopting a DIY approach, the school now has a dedicated library room filled with shelves just waiting to be filled. Healesvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bendigo Community Bank Branch manager Wilma Gibson was given a very enthusiastic â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good morning Ms Gibsonâ&#x20AC;? when she delivered seven brand new books to the school as a donation following a request from the school. While boxes of second-hand books have been donated, Ms Walker said getting the right books to cater for the interests and ages of the children meant books also needed to be bought brand new.

Couple grow old together By REBECCA BILLS IT IS a love that was made to last a life time. Lilydale couple Elaine and Mac McCarthy have defied all modern day marriage odds and celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss last Thursday. Mrs McCarthy, originally from Woori Yallock, and Mr McCarthy from Silvan said they came together at a dance held in Seville and could not take their eyes of each other. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was a bit of a sort,â&#x20AC;? Mrs McCarthy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was just 18 months later that we were married.â&#x20AC;? Wed in a little church in Woori Yallock, which has since been destroyed, the couple said it was a hot and muggy November day with the bride and the bridesmaids attired in dresses Mrs McCarthyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother hand made. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my family at that particular state my grandmother died six weeks before we were married and my sister had a baby a fortnight later,â&#x20AC;? Mrs McCarthy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So we had a birth, a death and a marriage in six weeks.â&#x20AC;? Five children and 10 grandchildren later, Mr and Mrs McCarthy said they could not be more proud of the family they have created. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had five children under the age of seven and Mac never changed a nappy,â&#x20AC;? Mrs McCarthy said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After we had the twins we worked out what was causing it.â&#x20AC;? Mr McCarthy jokingly said when they come two at a time you think you better give it away. When asked how to make a marriage last, Mr McCarthy said couples have to be well-trained

Mrs McCarthy said that when people fall in love the rose coloured glasses fall off after a few years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The whole thing is you become really good friends and we have become that,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mac says he is Prince Philip walking behind the Queen but really we just support each other.â&#x20AC;?

Banking on a change By KATH GANNAWAY THE BANKS of the Yarra in Warburton proved a fitting backdrop to a rally to encourage action on climate change on Sunday, 17 November. The rally, part of an Australia-wide day of action, drew round 50 people, a mix of locals and visitors. Organised through Get Up! and centred around raising awareness of the importance of climate change the rally was facilitated in Warburton by resident Nancy Seeger. Dressed in bright reds, pinks and oranges as ‘heatwave’ colours Ms Seeger said the Get Up, and the rally, was about giving people a voice where there is no voice. She said there while there were no grand speeches, the atmosphere prompted some

SHE has been described as beautiful and bubbly - a life taken too soon. 18-year-old Tanika Pearce spent her early years growing up in Healesville and tragically lost her life in a road crash on Friday 22 November. The small blue car she was driving hit a tree on MonbulkSilvan Road just before Hunter Road in Mount Evelyn. The crash happened at 1.03pm with police, ambulance and CFA members at the scene unable to revive her. Belgrave Police Sergeant Craig West confirmed that Tanika died at the scene. Bron Sands from Healesville worked with Tanika at The International at Lilydale just this year and said she was a week away from celebrating her 19th birthday. “She was saving up to get a car - she was so excited about getting her car,” she said. “She was a typical 18-yearold, bubbly and beautiful. “Such a sad, tragic thing to happen.” She said Tanika attended

Healesville Primary School and moved to Don Valley after Grade 6. Yarra Ranges Councillor and paramedic Jason Callanan praised the efforts of local CFA members on the Mail’s Facebook page on Friday following the tragic crash. “Tragic loss today, tried to assist but unfortunately her injuries were too severe,” he said. Friends and family flocked to Tanika’s personal Facebook page to leave moving tributes. Her boyfriend Michael D’angelo left a touching post on the teen’s Facebook wall talking of their daily morning routine together. “When I left for work on Friday I never expected I’d be doing this for the last time, but my last memory of you was exactly that - you, sleeping peacefully, smiling and knowing you were loved,” he said. “I will always remember that.” The road toll, as of Monday 25 November, stands at 210 down from 252 at the same time last year.

Scouts salute new home By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE First Scouts Group has celebrated a new lease on life for its community hall, which officially wrapped up a $50,000 refurbishment last week. The hall has undergone renovations to its storage facilities, Venturer’s Den and toilets over the last 15 months as part of a grant to improve the amenities for Scouts and community members. The upgrade also included a new

unisex shower for the hall, as well as a restructure of drainage and landscaping around the Scout group’s fire circle. Around 60 people attended the hall on Sunday 17 November for formal opening ceremony with Seymour MP Cindy McLeish, representing Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith. Scout Leader Helen Quinn said the day, which included a public tour of the newly furbished facilities,

was a success and that the upgrades improved the atmosphere of the hall. “I think the Scouts are really enjoying having the upgraded bathrooms, and when it comes to packing for camp, it’s a lot easier now we’ve got a big roller door,” Ms Quinn said. “We’re very pleased - the facilities have been upgraded and are going to be a lot more modern and pleasant for hall users to enjoy.” The refurbishment of the hall cost

A total of $5245 has been raised by local residents through Yarra Glen IGA’s Community Benefits program and donated straight to the fire brigade, which has used the funds for equipment over the years. Captain Wayne Morrow visited the supermarket on Wednesday 20 November to present manager Mark Mussared with a certificate, acknowledging the funds raised since the store opened in 2009. Capt Morrow said the funds have meant that the brigade has been able to purchase equipment more easily and that programs such as the Community Benefits program are essential. “It helps us to purchase items that the CFA doesn’t provide - to us, that’s very important,” Capt Morrow said. “In today’s world, where

CONTROVERSIAL new laws for restricted dog breeds will be debated in Parliament this week and a local animal worker is concerned about the threat to owners. An amendment to the Domestic Animals Bill will be decided on and voted for on Thursday in the Victorian Parliament, which could see the onus of proof shift from the council to dog owners. Currently, a dog must be proved to be a restricted breed by council before further action can be taken. Under the new laws, owners will have to have evidence on-hand to prove a suspected dog is not a restricted breed, rather than the council establishing proof. The passage concerning the onus of proof, which is on page 26 of the 38-page amendment, reads: “If a declaration is made ... to the effect that a dog is a restricted breed dog, then ... it is presumed, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, that the dog is a restricted breed dog.” The amendment has the condition that an authorised officer has completed a training course that would give them the ability to make such declarations. Animal Aid spokesperson Debra Boland said that the change to the onus of proof would make it hard for owners of similar-looking dogs to prove their animals were not a restricted breed, such as a pitbull terrier. She said this was hard for people who may have rescued abandoned dogs or received dogs from other people and don’t have breeding documentation. “If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, we have to call it a duck,” she said. “You can have an educated guess, but that’s all it is at the end of the day.” Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe welcomed the amendment and said that the new laws will help to protect vulnerable members of the community from dog attacks. However, Ms Boland expressed concern at the breed-specific legislation and said that, although laws to protect the community were important,

The amendment comes from the coronial recommendations, following the death of four-yearold Ayen Chol, who was mauled by a dog. There are a number of other changes within the bill amendment, such as the ability for people caught breeding restricted dogs to be jailed for six months.

But a recent significant donation by Wandin’s Golden Opportunity Shops to Yellingbo CFA is an exception. Shirley Holland, volunteer co-ordinator for the shop run by St Paul’s Anglican Church in Seville, and Yellingbo CFA captain Paul Spinks each say they hope the defibrillator funded by the shop is never called on. Tree dweller I AM inspired to see that Hannah Patchett, a 20-year-old has chosen to spend the next few months living in a little red tree house, 25 metres up in a contentious area of Leadbeater’s Possum habitat in protest at the clearfell logging which is driving the possum to extinction. This courageous young woman is sacrificing her time and safety to highlight this issue. The proposed “Great Forest National Park”, is the Leadbeater’s Possum’s only chance of long-term survival, as habitat loss caused by logging is the primary cause of the Leadbeater’s decline. Hannah is a shining example to all, and to those who criticise the youth of today as being shallow, lazy and indolent, I say look at Hannah. Stewart Kerr, Healesville.

Park life I SAY yes to a National Park. It would bring great benefits to the surrounding communities - many more tourists would come to the area to see our “gentle giants”, our amazing Mountain Ash forests. We have the potential to rival the Californian Redwoods as a global attraction, yet at the moment our trees are sadly undervalued. Who outside Australia knows that Mountain Ash Trees exist? That they are the tallest flowering trees? That they live for over 400 years? What a great addition to the area to be able to say we are a wine region and have a National Park just over an hour from a major capital city. Last but not least, how good would it feel to know that we would be doing something positive towards slowing climate change? Mountain Ash trees are among the best carbon sinks in the world and as such are of great value to us all when left to reach their full maturity. What are we waiting for? Action, not words I WAS privileged to be in Parliament Wednesday last week to witness the tabling of the report into child abuse, titled ‘Betrayal of Trust’. This report of the inquiry into the handling of child abuse by religious and other non-government organisations undertaken by the Fam-

ily and Community Development Committee is significant and historic. The courage shown, and contribution made, by people determined to speak out, some on behalf of those who could not, made it possible for the inquiry to review all the evidence on which they based their final conclusions. Their stories are harrowing. The former Premier of Victoria, Ted Baillieu, was a driving force behind this inquiry which addressed an issue largely ignored previously. His initiative put the issue of systemic child abuse on the national agenda and l am confident it led to the Commonwealth Government establishing a Royal Commission and to the Special Commission of Inquiry. The recommendations of the committee are intended to provide protection from the crime of child abuse that people in positions of authority have facilitated either through their actions or their inaction. I commend the Premier for moving swiftly on the report recommendations. The Coalition will immediately commence drafting legislation to implement a number of the report’s recommendations, including creating a new grooming offence, creating a new child endangerment offence, making it clear that it is a crime to conceal criminal child abuse and removing any inappropriate time limitations with respect to access to justice. The government is committed to making changes to protect our young. It is important that organisations also take a good look at their own operations and make similar changes. In setting up this inquiry, the government sought to make long-standing reform. What we have heard is distressing and we will act to protect our children, and we will act as quickly as possible. Accreditation concern IN RESPONSE to Isabelle Anderson’s and Ruby King’s opinions re Narconon (Mail, 19 November). 1. The drug and alcohol treatment facility that was near the old Warburton Hospital was an accredited service, meaning it had to answer to the Health Department and it was affordable to all walks of life. Narconon do NOT have to answer to anyone as it’s a private facility and it charges $25,000 to $30,000 per client, per stay. 2. Having looked into the drug and alcohol rehab facility “Windana” that Ruby referred to in comparison to Narconon, Windana is an accredited facility, which means they have standards they have to meet and are answerable to the Dept of Health. Windana is a member of The Australian National Council on Drugs, Australian Drug Foundation, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and many other accredited bodies within Australia. Windana charge $5 per day for the actual residential drug withdrawal phase and 78 per cent of one’s pension or benefit for the therapeutic phase. Windara require a medical report including a liver function test, a complete current psychiatric report and a complete police criminal history and all current legal paperwork. Narconon on the other hand are again NOT an accredited facility, therefore they are not answerable to anyone and they are not members of any Australian bodies related to drug and alcohol matters. They only require a medical report. The costs to partake in Narconon are astronomical in comparison to Windara. 3. As far as Narconon helping those local residents who may already be affect because “drug and alcohol use may already be taking its toll in Warburton”, is such a joke in the sense that most local residents could not afford the $25,000 to attend Narconon. In a meeting with the local primary school, Nerida James admitted that in the 12 years Narconon has been in East Warburton only one of their residents has been from Warburton. At the public meeting held in August this year Nerida James sold Narconon as a facility for the corporate sector. 4. If Narconon has nothing to hide and we as a community have nothing to fear then why don’t they become accredited? Why don’t they show all their costs and staff qualifications on their website? Just like Windara do. Why don’t they show the number of local community members they have helped on their website? The total

lack of transparency from Nerida and Narconon is an insult to the community of Warburton. Anita Juffermans, Warburton.

All in the timing AFTER last week’s Mail’s lovely article on St Brigid’s school children and knowing how hard the children worked to get sponsors, I was disappointed to see the very next page headline the abuse in the Catholic church. (Not against the article itself, just the timing.) Couldn’t the kids have their moment? I was even more disappointed with Kath’s scathing opinion on page 9. I respect the right of Kath to have an opinion but question if it is the right of a journalist to voice such a biaised opinion of the St Brigid’s parish community. Plans to offer tertiary education at Swinburne’s former site are on hold.

Conf l ict claims By MELISSA MEEHAN FUNDING provided by the State Government to the Yarra Ranges Council to find a tenant for the empty Swinburne site has been suspended thanks to what Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe has described as a political power play. Ms Fyffe said she had steam coming out of her ears when she heard that Eastern Metropolitan MP Shaun Leane had raised concerns about the recent grant given to the council - claiming a conflict of interest was present. The funding was to be used to explore tertiary education options for the former Swinburne University site at Lilydale. Due to his concerns, the Ombudsman’s

office has suspended the funding agreement until the actual or perceived conflict of interest was addressed. It is believed that Mr Leane raised a number of issues with the Ombudsman, the most serious being that the Yarra Ranges Council, the custodian of the funding, had a conflict of interest considering their interest to use the site for council offices rather than educational purposes. The suspension of the funding leaves the contractor David Ensor without work on the project. “What this means is that Shaun Leane has as a result of his purely political actions put a stop to the work that was being done by Barbara Van Ernst and the rest of the committee to achieve a positive out-

come for the Lilydale Swinburne site,” Ms Fyffe said. “There is no interest from a single provider to take over the site and provide further education and the committee were working with a group of partners to provide a viable range of courses for the residents of the Yarra Ranges. “What this means is that this selfish, and purely political stunt has squashed any chance of the campus reopening next year.” Do you think the council has a conflict of interest? LAST week marked the end of an era for 54 students who wound up their studies at Healesville High School with a graduation dinner. The event, which was held at the RACV Country Club on Thursday 21 November, saw VCE and VCAL students finish their school year officially with drinks, dinner and presentations from staff members. The Graduation Dinner is the penultimate time the students will be gathered together as one, ahead of the school’s Presentation Night on 17 December. Healesville High School principal George Perini said the school had elected to hold the dinner after exams to add an extra element of celebration. “We chose to let them get through and concentrate on their exams - when it’s all over, we can celebrate,” he said. About 200 people attended the dinner at which every Year 12 student received a photograph of their first and last school photograph and a glass marked with their year and all the Year 12 students’ names. Students were also given subject awards, which were decided by teachers assessing the children’s performance, rather than the official results which will be released next month. Mr Perini said he was proud of this year’s group of school-leavers. “We think that this group have been leaders - they have been a cohesive, co-operative, intelligent, creative group of students,” he said. He added that the class of 2013

Picture: ELIZABETH MILES was particularly notable for him because they started at the school the same year that he took up the mantle of principal. “I have absolutely linked my time with that group of Year 7s,” Mr Perini said. “It’s wonderful to see them grown up from the little kids we saw in 2008 - to see them as young, mature adults coming out of 2013.” The group of students will reconvene on Tuesday 17 December for the Healesville High School Presentation Night where students will be awarded based on their end-of-year results and ATAR scores. Small school digs deep By KATH GANNAWAY GRUYERE Primary School has done it again. The school has won the regional award in the Victorian Schools Garden Awards. VSGA judges visited the school, arriving by helicopter, on 22 October for an extensive tour of the gardens. Sustainability co-ordinator Karen Johnston said the school had won at regional level a number of times and were hoping that 2013 would see them come home from the State presentations in December with the top prize. Ms Johnston said while the school was small with just 28 students, parents, teachers and community had done a lot of work with the students. Together they had improved the gardens which include a butterfly garden, Japanese garden, orchard and vegetable gardens. Garden artworks created by the students using recycled bottle tops added another dimension. School representatives will go to the Royal Botanic Gardens in December for the announcement of the winning gardens. By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges residents and community members stopped to reflect on the ferocity of the Black Saturday bushfires, almost five years past, at the opening of a new memorial. Yarra Glen’s new bushfire memorial was constructed by local artist Ernst Fries as a space of reflection, thought and remembrance for those lost and the communities that have since rebuilt. More than 110 people at-

tended the official opening on Monday 25 November, where a number of community members spoke about the impact on the Yarra Ranges that can still be felt four years on. A sheltered screen, made from faceted, coloured glass is the centrepiece of the memorial, which stands in McKenzie Reserve and is surrounded by up-lights honouring individuals lost in the area and a plaque telling a brief story of the tragedy that unfolded on 7 February, 2009.

A common theme among the speakers on the day, which included deputy mayor Maria McCarthy, Wurundjeri Elder Joy Wandin-Murphy, resident Dale Ahern and Heartland Church pastor Mike Baimbridge, was the idea of community resilience in the aftermath of the disaster. Cave Hill plans are open for comment By MELISSA MEEHAN A DRAFT master plan for the Cave Hill development in Lilydale has been released and members of the public can have their say until 6 December. The Cave Hill site, currently known as the Lilydale Quarry, will shut down in coming years and Sibelco Australia is working with Places Victoria, Yarra Ranges

Firefighters earn ‘life’ medals By KATH GANNAWAY THE contribution of long-serving members of Yellingbo Rural Fire Brigade was celebrated in October with seven members receiving CFA Life Membership Medals. Between them Neville Sargeant, Bruce Logan, George Vassilopoulos, Gary Nixon, Paul Tripovich, Sue Williams and John Christie have given 266 years of service to their own community and to others. Brigade secretary Jeremy Hardy said the brigade was proud to see so many of their members receive recognition for their long-standing commitment to volunteering with the CFA and to serving their community. Former captain Bruce Logan is longest-serving CFA volunteer with 52 years accumulated serving as Captain and Lieutenant with Yellingbo brigade, and with Macclesfield as Lieutenant. Current treasurer Neville Sargeant has been with the brigade for 44 years - holding office in that time as Captain, Lieutenant and secretary.

including 1983 Ash Wednesday, 1985 Bright Forest Fire, 1991 Mt Little Joe, 1997 Dandenong Ranges and 2009 Black Saturday to name a few,” Mr Hardy said. The awards were presented at the brigade’s annual dinner and presentation night at Two Brooks Bar in Seville in October.

Plans for Crown land change By KATH GANNAWAY A NUMBER of Crown land, council-owned land and private land sites in Yarra Junction and Warburton are included in a proposal to fix anomalies in the Yarra Ranges Council Planning Scheme. Among them are the former Yarra Junction and current Warburton police station sites, land on which the Warburton Waterwheel complex and the former CFA fire station are included, and the Warburton Caravan Park. Yarra Ranges Council at its 12 November meeting voted to seek approval from the Minister for Planning to prepare a planning scheme amendment to correct a wide range of anomalies. The Department of Treasury had requested the former Yarra Junction police station site be rezoned to maximise its sale value. Under the proposal that site and an adjoining privately-owned block would be rezoned Mixed Use. Most of the land on the south side of the Warburton Highway between Station Street and Brett Road in Warburton is Crown land and includes the Waterwheel complex, shops and the old fire station, along with council-owned land and private land. The Planning Department report noted current zonings limited use of the land and made it difficult for the council to find commercial tenants for some of the buildings it manages. Various zones are proposed including Commercial 1 for established commercial buildings to Public Park and Recreation Zone for the community garden site, and Public Use for the police station site. There is also provision for new Design and Development Overlays. The proposal also calls for realignment of zone boundaries affecting the Warburton Caravan Park to take into account the DEPI requirements for management of the river bank and to facilitate making it a single parcel of land that could be sold to a commercial caravan park operator. Land occupied by commercial buildings between 3459 and 3463 Warburton Highway, Warburton, would be extended to bring all the land within Commercial 1 Zone. If authorised by the minister, the planning scheme amendment would be exhibited for submissions for at least one month. Good rap for timber industry icon A HEALESVILLE community icon has been recognised for his work with the timber industry, which he said helps the community and often gets a bad rap. Chamber of Commerce president Graham Taylor was awarded for his community support by the Victorian Association of Forest Industries (VAFI) on Friday 15 November. VAFI CEO Lisa Marty said that Mr Taylor’s award came from his ongoing contribution to the industry, to business and tourism, with an emphasis on the forestry work donated to the Yarra Valley Railway earlier this year. Ms Marty said that Mr Taylor had organised the work, which totalled more than $500,000 in donated labour and machinery used by Friends of For-

estry (FoF) to remove a number of pine trees along the railway’s path. “It’s really important - the industry is part of the fabric of the local community and the work that Graham has done shows that contribution is valued,” she said. “It’s also important to recognise that Graham is a pillar of the local community and has done a lot of work to support community events, charity and local business commerce generally.” Mr Taylor said he was embarrassed but appreciated the award, which he believes is symbolic for anyone who has “gone in to bat” for the timber industry. “The timber industry is the backbone of this area and one of the first ones to get in and help,” he said.

“It annoys the life out of me that hardworking old families in this area get treated like lepers.” He said that the industry often works with the community to minimise any harm, giving the example of the Leadbeater’s Possum Advisory Group (LPAG), which is currently chaired by VicForests and Zoos Victoria. “VicForests is so stringent and aware of the situation, and I believe the panel will take the best logical approach to make the situation for the Leadbeater’s possum better,” Mr Taylor said. The advisory group is set to hand its recommendations to the Victorian Government in the near future, with $1 million allocated to implement the group’s recommendation.

Community in full bloom By KATH GANNAWAY STEELS Creek’s Annual Flower Show has blossomed into a whole of community event with something for all ages and interests. The Steels Creek Community Centre was buzzing on Saturday 9 November during the 9th Annual Flower Show combined with the inaugural Steels Creek Fete. The traditional drawcard of hundreds of plants grown by local garden club members was as strong as ever, along with the rose display, crafts by the Steels Creek Stitchers and artwork by local school students, and then there was the fete. Market stalls and children’s activities including face-painting, felting and pony rides added to the fun. Steels Creek Community Centre vice president and fete organiser Vicki Stewart said the fete not only helped raise funds for the centre, but aimed to broaden the appeal to include new families who had moved into community.

Paradise Lost launched By JESSE GRAHAM THE launch of a new book at TarraWarra Museum of Art has added another facet to a large exhibition and tells a historical account of a pre-invasion Yarra Valley. Around 70 people packed into the halls of TWMA on Sunday 17 November for the opening of Paradise Lost: On and Around the Great Moorool by Mick Woiwod. The book, which tells the story of the Yarra Valley through pre-invasion Wurundjeri eyes, was launched as part of the Future Memorials exhibition currently on display at the gallery. Tom Nicholson, whose installation Towards a Monument to Batman’s Treaty 2008-2013

is currently part of the exhibition, gave a talk on the day. Mr Woiwod then joined TWMA curator Anthony Fitzpatrick in conversation for the book launch. Paradise Lost discusses the Great Moorool, which was a 20-kilometre long lake that lay five kilometres wide in the Upper Yarra floodplains long before European invasion. Mr Woiwod said that, if the centuries-old lake had remained, Healesville, Yarra Glen, Lilydale and Woori Yallock would be situated on the lake’s shoreline. Santa slays the bush IT’S time to make a December date with Carol - carols! The tradition of community carols in the Yarra Valley is a strong one and with events throughout the valley, there’s always the option of being a ‘visitor’ if there’s a date clash. – Healesville Lions Club and Healesville Sanctuary have teamed up again for the 2013 Carols on Saturday 14 December. The carols have a distinctly Aussie feel to them in the bushland setting. The gates open at 5.30pm with free entry for the local community. There will be food available, or take along a picnic basket, and Santa has Healesville Sanctuary locked into his GPS as one of his first visits to the area. The event, on Saturday 21 December, is run by River Valley Church and Warburton Advancement League with people attending from all along the Warburton Highway and surrounding townships. Pre-carol activities, including a visit by Santa, start at 7pm with carols starting at 8.15pm. Take along a picnic dinner or take the night off and take advantage of the food stalls. The wet-weather alternative venue is Millwarra Community Centre. No lights on dancing By JESSE GRAHAM DANCING with a difference is available in Healesville every Thursday night, with a unique style that is suited to all ages, genders and walks of life. The No Lights No Lycra sessions began in Melbourne in 2009 and recently opened in Healesville, with dance sessions offering a night of movement for residents. There is, however, a distinct twist to these evenings - there’s no lights, no lycra, no instructors and no technique needed. Healesville resident Marimba Wilkie has been running the No Lights No Lyrca evenings in Healesville since 14 November and said the attendance has been heartening. She said that 17 people attended the first evening, which was held at St Brigid’s Parish Hall and that the event has since generated strong word-of-mouth interest. “Everybody left sweaty and smiling,” Ms Wilkie said. “I’m still buzzing - everyone is. It was an awesome first night.” Ms Wilkie said the theme of No Lights No Lycra allows for all of the visitors to move however they want in a positive environment, without fear of judgement. “You’re in your own space, no-one is focusing

Little Yarra Steiner School is paying homage to the band with the LYSS Pink Floyd Musical Tribute at The Memo in Healesville on Sunday 1 December. The English rock band’s eighth studio album was its most commercially successful with an estimated 50 million copies sold. Dark Side of the Moon also rates among the most popular with fans, and has been ranked among the greatest albums of all time. Featuring students, teachers and friends the performance will showcase Little Yarra’s rich musical tapestry. The album which features songs and in-

strumentals including Speak to Me, Time, Us and Them, On the Run, Eclipse and Any Colour You Like, will be performed in its entirety, with unique and creative interpretations. Bring good cheer BY JESSE GRAHAM AND KATH GANNAWAY CHRISTMAS doesn’t just have to be a time for gifts, tinsel and cheesy movies - it can be an occasion to lend a hand to those in need. As the festive season draws closer, community welfare groups are opening their doors and asking for residents to donate what they can as part of their Christmas appeals. HICCI (Healesville Interchurch Community Care Inc) and LinC (Love In the Name of Christ) based at Yarra Junction, will be running their Christmas hamper appeals until 23 December, aiming to offer food and Christmas treats to residents around the area. As part of the hamper appeals, HICCI and LinC are hoping to receive donations of fruit juice, soft drink, canned vegetables, fruit or custard, Christmas puddings, cakes or mince pies, snacks such

as pretzels, chips or lollies, shortbread, biscuits, spreads, sauces and Christmas crackers or bonbons to make hampers. HICCI member Cheree Laumen and LinC’s Julie Szabo said the hamper appeals assist families, single people and seniors in the area who may not be as well off over the festive season. “People’s struggles are highlighted at Christmas time,” Ms Laumen said. “This brings a bit of cheer to people’s lives when they’re down and out or having a struggle.” Ms Laumen said it would also be greatly appreciated if residents donated new toys for children’s gifts. LinC also has a Toy Shop at Christmas which is funded through donations from local church and other agencies. “We’d love it if people slipped some little luxury items in to our hamper bin to add something spe-

cial to the hampers,” Ms Szabo said. She said LinC was also seeking extra volunteers to help pack hampers and for the Toy Shop. Residents can drop off items for the HICCI Christmas Hamper Appeal at Healesville Coles, Healesville IGA, the Healesville Community Link building or at the HICCI office at 231 Maroondah Highway, Healesville, between 9am-3.30pm Monday to Friday. LinC has a hamper bin outside Safeway in Yarra Junction and goods can be dropped off at the LinC office at Yarra Ranges Council Community Link in Yarra Junction. Thunder heralds toy run MOTORCYCLISTS are being asked to sign up to a good cause and take their toys on the road next weekend for children in need. The Father Bob Toy Run will be coming to Healesville on Sunday 8 December from 9am and is expected to bring more than 200 motorcyclists to the town for the event. Motorcycle and scooter riders will be amassing at All Moto Café in Healesville at 9am to depart at 9.30am, riding into the city bearing toys, blankets and tinned food for the Father Bob Foundation. It is estimated that about 5000 riders will be taking part in the Toy Run across the state, which is organised by the Independent Riders’ Group.

Yarra Ranges motorcyclist and member of the Independent Riders’ Group Heather Ellis said the toy run is about having a fun day on the road and providing a happier Christmas for families. “All the donations go to the Father Bob Foundation, which looks after members of the community who are living in poverty and homeless people,” Ms Ellis said. Ms Ellis encouraged any motorcycle riders in the area to come along on the day and to bring what they could to donate. She said that the Toy Run had been held since 1978, though numbers had declined in recent years, and she was hoping for hundreds of riders from the Yarra Ranges to take part. There are no fees or registration required to take part in the

toy run - only donations for the foundation. Safety will be a key feature of the day and Ms Ellis said that the event doubles as an opportunity to promote motorcyclist safety and safe attitudes for car drivers. “The Toy Run is a fun day for all the family, and it’s also a good time at the beginning of summer to promote motorcycle safety to riders and raise awareness amongst drivers to watch out for motorcyclists,” she said. Ms Ellis asked that anyone considering toy donations should also try to cater for older children, who will also benefit from the Toy Run. Donations for the Toy Run can be dropped off at All Moto Café in Healesville until Saturday 7 December.

SHEER pace has always been the showpiece of cricket. The excitement fans get from a Dennis Lillee, Malcolm Marshall or Brett Lee thundering in throwing down brutal rockets. This weekend, the speedsters in the Yarra Valley took full toll on their unsuspecting victims. At Coldstream, Matthew Stark cut a swathe through the Mount Evelyn batting line-up to lead the Crocs to a thriller victory. With Mount Evelyn sitting on 1/33 chasing 122 for victory, most pundits had the Rovers well in front of this contest. Stark with the support of Jarrod Bayliss (2/28), made early inroads into the visitors batting before rearguard action from Luke Jones (34) and Bruce Smith put the Rovers back in the contest at tea sitting on 5/81. This was short lived, as an excellently executed spell from Stark after tea saw the woodwork rattled. The visitors’ tail was unable to counter Stark’s pace and accuracy as he recorded remarkable figures of 7/37 to roll Mount Evelyn for 101. Coldstream now sit clearly on top of the ladder and have an intriguing battle against second-placed Healesville ahead. Mount Evelyn now needs to regroup, as they have not won since Round Two and host a much-improved Hoddles Creek side. Seville will be pleased with their all-round effort against Yarra Junction, as the reigning premiers found some much-needed form. The Blues were defending a sizeable 235 and left it to fast bowlers Matt Hadlum and Ishara Amarasinghe to break the Eagles in their chase. Yarra Junction made a reasonable start against the formidable attack, and the weather, to reach 2/30 with Dan Lever (27) leading the charge. The Eagles just could not deal with the heat coming from Hadlum (4/12) as his blistering speed, and the guile of Amarasinghe (3/37), rendered the Eagles toothless as they dismissed the visitors for 109 to cap off an impressive victory. Seville now has the chance to turn up the heat on the top four as they travel to Woori Yallock, while Yarra Junction need to turn up the heat on Warburton-Millgrove or they will find themselves drifting from the leaders of the competition. Unfortunately, weather intervened in the remaining contests which were poised for interesting conclusions. Healesville remain in second place on the

ladder, but will be rueing a missed opportunity to gain ground on Coldstream. Chasing Warburton-Millgrove’s 179, the Bloods looked well set to chase down the total. Geoff Stock (26 not out) and John Heywood (19 not out) are forming a formidable opening partnership, and once again had Healesville well out of the blocks at 0/51 when the weight of rain became too much. Undefeated since Round One, the Bloods will see next week’s clash with Coldstream as a perfect opportunity to lay claims to being the competition’s best team. All while the consistent Burras need to account for Yarra Junction to consolidate their position in the top four.
