She’s a life-saver

By DANIELLE GALVIN WHEN paramedics raced to Aura Vale Lake in Belgrave South earlier this year to treat a young man with a spinal injury, they found a selfless and “impressive” young girl. On Friday, nine-year-old Alayah Carthy accepted an Ambulance Victoria Community Hero Award.

Dignitaries including CEO Greg Sassella and Minister for Health David Davis knelt down to her level for the formal photo and it was clear in

that moment that the Ferntree Gully girl had shown incredible maturity well beyond her years when she cradled a family friend with a spinal injury after he injured himself doing a backflip and jumping into the lake.

It was in February that Alayah, her mother Brooke, and family friend Matt Christophers were enjoying a day out when the unthinkable happened. They watched in horror as Matt, who had been swinging from a rope swing when the branch broke, plunged head first

into shallow water.

Alayah sat in the freezing cold water for close to 40 minutes while two ambulance crews worked to save his life, stabilise him for transportation and minimise the damage to his spine.

Nominating paramedic Matthew Gray said he never heard Alayah complain during the traumatic ordeal. He said the neurosurgeon told him that the cold water, coupled with Alayah’s strength and persistence, meant that the swelling in his

brain was minimal.

Days later he was out of a coma, walking around in a neck brace and halo - thanking his lucky stars for Alayah and her mum’s quick-thinking. Mr Davis said he was astounded by the number of young people accepting awards and Mr Sassella summed it up on behalf of Ambulance Victoria.

“You are actually heroes - people in the audience today are alive because of your actions,” he said.

They need donations of non-perishable foods including long-life milk, tinned vegetables and fruit, pudding, coffee and tea, sugar, fruit cakes, juice, non-perishable cheese, biscuits both sweet and savoury, gravy mix, canned tuna and ham.

“Stuff like that we can never get enough of, but they are perfect foods to include in our Christmas hampers,” Ms Bevan said.

“And we’d love it if we could get a few lollies or chocolates too - it’s something different from the every day items we usually give out - something special for Christmas.”

This year 224 people have been invited to attend the Hills Christmas where the Christmas hampers will be handed out.

Those who attend will also have the opportunity to take one donated gift to give to a family member or loved one.

“We have our Giving Tree up at the Belgrave Library,” Ms Bevan said.

“The idea is that members of the community go to the tree and take a card, they buy a present and bring it back to the tree.

“They don’t need to wrap it.”

Giving Tree donations need to be returned by 6 December and food donations will be accepted up until Christmas.

DRERS is always looking for volunteers to help provide emergency assistance to their clients, and need volunteers to work in their Op Shop. For more information, call DRERS on 9754 7777.

THE TREES are up and Christmas carols are playing in most shops - it’s easy to get caught up in the holiday spirit, but spare a thought for those doing it tough.

Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) manager Tania Bevan and her team are bracing for their busiest time of the year.

Ms Bevan is already estimating that they will need to support more than 100 local families doing it rough in the lead up to Christmas and soon after.

“This really is our busiest time of year,” she said. “We are inundated with people before Christmas and in the lead up to school starting.

“These people are already struggling, but they have to spend a little extra over Christmas and that puts them over their limits.”

Ms Bevan said visiting family over the holidays was also another reason families were feeling the pinch.

“These people go up to Bendigo or Ballarat to be with their families and that trip in the end is what means they don’t have enough for groceries or school essentials,” she said.

“People who are already struggling to make ends meet really find this time of the year a struggle.”

This year, DRERS is again calling on donations for their Hills Christmas Project - and will put together more than 200 food hampers for struggling locals.

Hot-spot cameras help in fire search

By MELISSA MEEHAN FOURTEEN thermal imaging cameras that will help in critical search and rescue scenarios have been donated to local fire brigades.

The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group donated the cameras worth $60,000 at the Community Bank Fire Safety Expo over the weekend.

Chairman of the Group Peter Marke said the bank was particularly proud to sponsor the project as it was a great example of what Community Banks are about.

“The cameras will greatly assist our local volunteers with critical search and rescue in buildings and other tasks that significantly aid their operations,” Mr Marke said.

cer Rod Stebbing congratulated the bank on its initiative.

“Well done and thank you to all the community bank branches involved in this initiative,” Mr Stebbing said.

“I understand that Upwey, Belgrave, Cockatoo and Olinda branches are part of the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group and all the brigades in this catchment will be

receiving one of these very useful pieces of equipment.”

The new 24-hour manned station, built at 386 Belgrave-Gembrook Road near Emerald’s main shopping precinct received more than $6 million funding from the State Government in 2012.

At the time of the announcement, Peter Nodin, an Emerald resident and long-time campaigner for an increased local police presence, said the announcement was “massive news”.

“We’ve been fighting for 12 years for this,” he said, referring to a petition signed by more than 3100 locals for a new police station more than a decade ago.

POLICE are investigating two home invasions in Menzies Creek and Pakenham.

About 9.45am on 14 November, a 15-year-old victim was disturbed in a Dunbarton Drive, Pakenham, home by two men.

The men are believed to have entered the home through an unlocked door.

A 42-year-old Inverloch man and a 45-year-old man from Leongatha are assisting police with their inquiries.

In an unrelated incident, burglars ran from a Menzies Creek home last week after disturbing the home-owner.

About 7am on the same day, police believe two offenders entered the Aura Vale Road home through an unlocked door.

The house was ransacked and two laptops were stolen before the offenders disturbed the victim. The laptops were valued at $1500 and a Foxtel unit was also stolen.

Hub’s ‘urgent’ need

A GROUNDSWELL of support to save Olinda Pool is brewing.

Last week the Mail broke the news that Yarra Ranges Council had decided to close the pool permanently after irreparable cracks were found.

Pool crusader John Faull called on the community to get behind him to fight to keep the pool open, and they have in droves.

Mr Faull was part of the fundraising committee to get the pool built in the 1960s and he said it was an important part of the community that should not be lost.

The firefighter of more than 50 years said the pool was built with funds raised by the community for the community.

“I helped raise the money and it was for local families,” he said.

“They’ve tried to close it before, and we stopped it and I hope we can do it again.”

Others questioned why the community wasn’t consulted about the decision.

Yarra Ranges Council director of environment and engineering Mark Varmalis said the council had always recommended that Olinda Pool was closed once the Monbulk Aquatic Centre was redeveloped and opened.

He said a feasibility study for the future of the site will be undertaken once the Fire Commissioners Office completes its Fire Response Landscape Plan for the Dandenong Ranges.

Mooroolbark teen lost too young

By REBECCA BILLS SHE has been described as beautiful and bubbly - a life taken too soon.

Mooroolbark teen Tanika Pearce, 18, lost her life in a road crash last Friday.

The small blue car she was driving hit a tree on Monbulk-Silvan Road just before Hunter Road in Mount Evelyn at 1.03pm.

Emergency services crews were unable to revive her and police said she died at the scene.

Yarra Ranges councillor and paramedic Jason Callanan praised the efforts of

CFA members on the Mail’s Facebook page on Friday following the tragic crash.

“Tragic loss today, tried to assist but unfortunately her injuries were too severe,” he said.

The sentiments of many others were echoed in the words of Mail Facebook user Gary Taylor who sent his condolences and love to the family and friends of Tanika.

“I send my wishes to those who were there helping alongside me, we tried our best I am sorry we could do no more,” he said. “What a shame, so young.”

about getting her car,” she said.

“She was a typical 18-year-old, bubbly and beautiful. Such a sad, tragic thing to happen.”

She said Tanika attended Healesville Primary School and moved to Don Valley after Grade 6. It is understood she graduated from Lilydale Heights last year and worked at Planet Surf in Chirnside Park.

Just six minutes after the crash there was another just over a kilometre down the road which resulted in a man being air-lifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

FUNDING provided by the State Government to the Yarra Ranges Council to find a tenant for the empty Swinburne site has been suspended thanks to what Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe has described as a political power play.

Ms Fyffe said she had steam coming out of her ears when she heard that Eastern Metropolitan MP Shaun Leane had raised concerns about the recent grant given to the council - claiming a conflict of interest was present.

The funding was to be used to explore tertiary education options for the former Swinburne University site at Lilydale.

Due to his concerns, the Ombudsman’s office has suspended the funding agreement until the actual or perceived conflict of interest was addressed.

It is believed that Mr Leane raised a number of issues with the Ombudsman, the most serious being that the Yarra Ranges Council, the custodian of the funding, had a conflict of interest considering their interest to use the site for council offices rather than educational purposes.

The suspension of the funding leaves the contractor David Ensor without work on the project.

“What this means is that Shaun Leane has as a result of his purely political actions put a stop to the work that was being done by Barbara Van Ernst and the rest of the committee to achieve a positive outcome for the Lilydale Swinburne site,” Ms Fyffe said.

“There is no interest from a single provider to take over the site and provide further education and the committee were working with a group of partners to provide a viable range of courses for the residents of the Yarra Ranges.

“What this means is that this selfish, and purely political stunt has squashed any chance of the campus reopening next year.”

A HILLS community group says the need for a multi-services hub is “urgent” for residents in Gembrook, Cockatoo and Emerald.

Chair of the Eastern Ranges Project Group Russell Soderlund said it was often a difficult task for vulnerable people and elderly residents to get access to health and community care services in the northern parts of the shire.

Research recently undertaken by consultant Isabelle Woodin recommends that the hub be established at the site of the Emerald Hall.

Mr Soderlund said a good range of services were available but were under-utilised by people in the community.

“A community hub would create access for all members of the community regardless of their networks and skills, and importantly enable personal assistance,” he said.

“Many services can be accessed by the internet, but people often don’t know a service exists and many are not internet savvy.

“Others find navigating some sites daunting and confusing.

“It is also apparent many older people don’t have strong computer skills.”

Mr Soderlund said that the concept for the community services hub included assisted access where trained volunteers helped their peers to access the services they require.

Revealing tale

By JESSE GRAHAM THE launch of a new book at TarraWarra Museum of Art has added another facet to a large exhibition and tells a historical account of a pre-invasion Yarra Valley.

Around 70 people packed into the halls of TWMA on Sunday 17 November for the opening of Paradise Lost: On and Around the Great Moorool

by Mick Woiwod.

The book, which tells the story of the Yarra Valley through pre-invasion Wurundjeri eyes, was launched as part of the Future Memorials exhibition currently on display at the gallery.

Tom Nicholson, whose installation Towards a Monument to Batman’s Treaty 2008-2013 is currently part of the exhibi-

tion, gave a talk on the day.

Mr Woiwod then joined TWMA curator Anthony Fitzpatrick in conversation for the book launch.

Paradise Lost discusses the Great Moorool, which was a 20-kilometre long lake that lay five kilometres wide in the Upper Yarra floodplains long before European invasion.

Mr Woiwod said that, if the centuries-old lake had remained, Healesville, Yarra Glen, Lilydale and Woori Yallock would be situated on the lake’s shoreline.

He said the story, which is written from an Indigenous point-of-view, aligns with geologists’ views that there had formerly been a lake on the Upper Yarra floodplains.

The book launch and Mr Nicholson’s installation are all part of a large, joint-exhibition, which features works created by Jonathan Jones and Mr Nicholson in conjunction with Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Joy Wandin-Murphy.

The other part of the exhibition is a series of paintings, pictures and never-beforedisplayed works by renowned artist Russell Drysdale, called Russell Drysdale: Defining the Modern Australian Landscape.

The exhibitions finish on 9 February 2014.

Burden of proof has bite

By JESSE GRAHAM CONTROVERSIAL new laws for restricted dog breeds will be debated in Parliament this week and a local animal worker is concerned about the threat to owners.

An amendment to the Domestic Animals Bill will be decided on and voted for on Thursday in the Victorian Parliament, which could see the onus of proof shift from the council to dog owners.

Currently, a dog must be proved to be a restricted breed by council before further action can be taken.

Under the new laws, owners will have to have evidence on-hand to prove a suspected dog is not a restricted breed, rather than the council establishing proof.

The passage concerning the onus of proof, which is on page 26 of the 38page amendment, reads: “If a declaration is made... to the effect that a dog is a restricted breed dog, then ... it is presumed, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, that the dog is a restricted breed dog.”

The amendment has the condition

that an authorised officer has completed a training course that would give them the ability to make such declarations.

Animal Aid spokesperson Debra Boland said that the change to the onus of proof would make it hard for owners of similar-looking dogs to prove their animals were not a restricted breed, such as a pitbull terrier.

She said this was hard for people who may have rescued abandoned dogs or received dogs from other people and don’t have breeding documentation.

“If it looks like a duck and quacks

like a duck, we have to call it a duck,” she said.

“You can have an educated guess, but that’s all it is at the end of the day.”

Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe welcomed the amendment and said that the new laws will help to protect vulnerable members of the community from dog attacks.

However, Ms Boland expressed concern at the breed-specific legislation and said that, although laws to protect the community were important, other countries passing similar legislation

resulted in no reduction in dog attacks.

“Even if we killed all the pitbulls tomorrow, I’d be very surprised if it had any impact on the amount of bite incidents,” she said.

The amendment comes from the coronial recommendations, following the death of four-year-old Ayen Chol, who was mauled by a dog.

There are a number of other changes within the bill amendment, such as the ability for people caught breeding restricted dogs to be jailed for six months.

Heat warning for car kids

By REBECCA BILLS OVER the past year 1100 children have been locked in cars throughout Victoria - an increase of almost 200 on the previous year.

Of the 1100 incidents over the last 12 months, six were reported in Ferntree Gully, five in Lilydale and one in both Ferny Creek and Tecoma.

The expected coming hot summer has prompted a warning from paramedics.

Ambulance Victoria group manager Brett Drummond warned that leaving children in a car could prove deadly with cases of children dying in hot cars in recent years.

“Babies and young children can’t regulate their body temperature like adults

can, so being left in a hot car can quickly become life threatening,” he said.

Mr Drummond said it does not have to be a hot day for the car to quickly heat up.

“Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that even on a 29-degree day the inside of a car can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and 60 degrees within 20 minutes,” he said.

“Leaving them in the car is just not acceptable.”

A report released by Ambulance Victoria said most incidents were reported between November 2012 and March 2013 - the hottest months of the year.

From the months of December 2012 and March 2013 an average of five calls were made to triple zero a day reporting someone

locked in a car.

The figures revealed that 46 per cent of calls involving children under the age of 13 occurred between 11am and 3pm with more than two thirds of incidents taking place in a car park, public road or public place.

A further 21 per cent of instances occurred at home.

Incidents in which keys were locked in the car with the child were also common and Mr Drummond said parents need to be aware of the possibility.

“About 21 per cent of cases occurred outside a house,” he said.

“We urge parents to be mindful and keep the keys in their hand while they are getting children and shopping in and out of the car.”

Pool too cool I LIVE a few kilometres from the Olinda pool.

We love the Olinda pool but I know that it is not used as often as it could be simply because the water is so cold.

People would be able to use it much more if this situation could be altered either by (solar) heating or by a concertinatype ribbed cover which could be easily opened and closed as dictated by the weather.

Monbulk aquatic centre does NOT offer open air swimming, not even open air paddling for kids.

Pool outrage I HAVE lived in the Dandenong Ranges for approximately 43 years and when my five kids were growing up I used to take them to the pool regularly on hot days.

We all enjoyed having a pool to go to where we could cool down - unlike Monbulk pool which is heated.

I couldn’t believe it when I was told last summer that the Olinda pool is now closed on Total Fire Ban Days because of OHS. As John Faull states, these are the main days when families want access to their local pool to get relief from the heat.

What has happened to common sense today? How about reducing and clearing the overgrown vegetation around the pool and bringing it back to a state of repair? No need to spend millions on it like was spent on the Monbulk Pool. Just restore it to its former condition.

The proposed new regional soccer complex near Monbulk which is going to cost millions of dollars doesn’t seem to be a problem - so how about sparing just a portion of ratepayers’ money so that we can cool off again - and leave it open on hot days. Then people will be able to visit it again. Watch the numbers go up then. Of course nobody has been going there - it is closed on days when people want to use it.

Good on you, John Faull. I agree. It is a disgrace and I am sure you will have lots of support from this community to save the Olinda pool.

Vision of the park THANKYOU Jesse Graham for the article about the proposed National Park in the forest of the Toolangi area (19 November, National Park push strengthening in Toolangi) and to the Mail for inviting comment.

I think the proposal is quite visionary and I do hope we will see the National Park come into being.

Tourism is without doubt the primary employer in the Healesville region.

Tourism brings outside dollars into our economy and helps sustain our way of life.

We live in a time of uncertainty as the effects of our changing climate are becoming increasingly apparent.

We know about the challenge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but many people don’t know that the mature forest stores huge amounts of carbon that are released when these trees are harvested. Our mountain ash forests are the most carbon dense forests in the world.

We can make a significant contribution to reducing our carbon emissions simply by leaving these forests standing.

There are other environmental advantages too.

Mature forests allow much more of the rain that falls on them to run off.

Young forests are much more thirsty.

Protecting our mature forests is of great importance to our water catchments. Another fact that is sometimes overlooked is that mature forests are more fire resistant and burn less actively than younger re-growth areas that grow after an area has been logged or as trees grow back after fires.

When areas are logged and reseeded there is loss of natural diversity that is important in providing the necessary habitat for our wildlife and is so much part of the beauty of the forest.

I hope our community will strongly support the National Park proposal.

Don’t fool with pool I HAVE just found out on Facebook that the Olinda Pool is closing! Why are the residents and ratepayers not being informed about this? We pay a fortune in rates to Yarra Ranges and all we get is a garbage collection and an un-maintained, unmade road, now you want to take away the pool!

Obviously as residents we don’t have a voice and I am furious about this.

At what stage were we going to be notified?

That won’t help THE YRC’s contractors are now removing the dangerous concrete corners around the street trees in Monbulk’s main street after six months of complaints by townspeople.

This is a half-baked response that will do nothing to improve Monbulk’s economic future and bigger car parking spaces that were there previously.

Sniper fire ALAN Coutinho-Hogan, (A C-H) as I expected, has taken me to task over my recent criticism of his writing style in which I drew a comparison of his letter writing abilities as being akin to ’taking a knife to a gunfight’.

I was wrong in saying that and apologise.

But I have to set a couple of things straight, as Alan C-H is more than a little loose with the facts and even looser with his inferences.

He uses specious argument, emotive language, unsubstantiated inferences, improper imputations and downright incorrect facts, which might indeed be taken as intentional falsehoods by some, in rebutting me.

In a moment of what appears to be madness he invites me to respond, and I use his own words, “you and your Greens mates can pull that little speech apart”.

It would be churlish of me not to accept such an invitation, even as incorrect as is the relationship statement contained therein.

He indicates I am a Green. This was a source of much hilarity in my household where my comments about the Greens are generally unprintable.

In the gentlest terms I can possibly muster with a straight face, the Greens is an organisation full of worthy statements, high ideals, a now charisma-less bunch of politicians and absolutely no political acumen and is on its way to the dustbin of history to join the Democrats and DLP (sorry, Sam).

“I am not a politician” states A C-H. Well sorry mate, but if you enter a political contest of any sort you are definitely a small-p politician.

A C-H also says “I was the one who ran wholly as an individual against the might of two political parties and came pretty close to beating the political monster I was opposing.” Really, it does not look like that to me.

He ran against one other candidate, an acknowledged Green, so where are the ‘two political parties’. He lost with about 41 per cent of votes to 59 per cent. Which means that for every two votes A C-H got, his opponent, Samantha Dunn got three.

That is not ‘close’, in political terms that is an absolute whitewash.

I’m also unhappy about the imputation that I had political and financial support from outside.

Not so, in fact I absolutely detest party politics in council matters and have little regard for professional politicians who use local government as a planned stepping stone to state or federal seats.

Sorry A C-H, Your imputation is also wrong, I too was completely independent and self-funded.

So back to the apology about A C-H taking a knife to a gunfight. I was wrong.

It is more like he is taking a bent peashooter to an artillery battle.

But wouldn’t it be dull if the five grumblers, A C-H, Jack Russell, Bruce Johnson, John Christie and I stopped sniping at each other and the shire in these pages.

Keep clear of burn up

That’s the word from Monbulk fire brigade Captain Simon Schroder in the lead up to the fire season.

He said Monbulk firefighters had already been called out twice this month to burn-offs that had got out of control.

“We really appreciate you cleaning up your yard, after all, one likely fire source in the coming season is ember attack from fires elsewhere and if your yard is clear of flammable litter, it lessens your risk,” Capt Schroder said.

“But if you are cleaning up leaf litter by burning, please make sure you do it away from the base of all trees.

“If the flames get into the bark and race up the tree, it is a triple zero call to put it out once it gets above the reach of your garden hose.”

He said despite both the Yarra Ranges Council and CFA making it clear that residents should not burn near trees, it was still happening.

“The big problem with burning trees is that they throw ‘fire starters’ over a large area,” he said.

“We have had two call-outs recently for exactly that cause.

“A couple of clean-up fires ran

up tree trunks and needed our attendance.”

Capt Schroder said that residents needed to remember that being able to burn for fire reduction purposes was a privilege and needed to be treated as such.

“Burning to clear our bigger domestic yards is best done with a series of small, no more than a cubic metre, clean-up fires,” he said, “These should be lit in turn, not all at once and well away from standing trees.

“But have the hose at hand, and wet down nearby trunks before you start.

“If the tree should catch, and the fire gets beyond your hose’s reach, do not delay, get us out to help.

“If you wait too long, the fire may climb to be above the easy reach of our bigger hoses and pumps, so act quickly.

Monbulk residents needing fire prevention advice before the fire season can contact the Monbulk fire brigade.

The brigade has two very experienced and specifically trained firefighters who can visit homes and give advice about making the house more fire resistant, thus keeping you safe.

Hoffy appeals to ‘spread the love’

By MELISSA MEEHAN FOR three years Julie Hoffman has raised money for Heartkids through her Burpees Challenge.

This year, she’s aiming for bigger and better - and hoping to help more people along the way. “The last three years have been to raise money for Heartkids in honour of my niece Stacey,� Ms Hoffman said. “During those three years I have received so many requests for help from families that don’t fall under an ‘umbrella’ as such... families with kids that need a new wheelchair, have brain tumours,

leukaemia, families that lose all their possessions in house fires, there are way too many to list.�

So Hoffy, as she is affectionately known by many in the community, has decided that from 2014 Hoffy’s Burpee Challenge will be called Hoffy’s Community Burpee Challenge. “It means we’ll be able to help as many people in our community as we can,� she said. “Obviously Heartkids will always hold a very special place in my heart and I will always do what I can to help them. I just feel that it’s time to spread the love a little and help families that don’t get

any help from other avenues.�

She said that this year’s Burpee Challenge, aside from raising $80,000 for Heartkids, Hoffy and her team are also sending a family with four small children to Queensland. “Their youngest son Rhylan is the most amazing little boy with the most incredible fighting spirit,� she said. “He has an 11-year-old sister that lives in Queensland and after spending time with the family we could see how important it was for them to get together and for Rhylan to have a much-wanted cuddle from his big sister.�

things like that for people gives her an amazing feeling. “None of us ever know what is around the corner and I hope that if ever someone I care for and love is in need of some help, that someone will be there like we hope to be there for others,� she said. “We will obviously have guidelines that have to be met and limits on how much we can do dependant on what money we raise but every little bit is fantastic. “Our first fund-raiser is almost booked - our second Rainbow Fun Run at Cardinia Reservoir is looking like being on 2 March and if it’s anything like this year it will be a huge success.�

Signs stand-off sorted – a win for The Patch

By MELISSA MEEHAN RESIDENTS of The Patch have had a win, after the Yarra Ranges Council overturned their decision to put up No Stopping signs outside their properties.

Last week Marlene and Ross Byrne contacted the Mail concerned about the council’s plan to install No Stopping signs along the Kallista-Emerald Road from The Patch Primary School to The Patch Road.

“We’ve lived here for 42 years and there is literally no place for our visitors to park if these signs are allowed to go up,� Ms Byrne said. “We understand that it is becoming an issue of safety at school times, because the kids walk along the footpath, but we don’t believe it should be 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year.�

They said that the school was built as a small school for a small community, but over time the school had become more popular

and students were coming from as far as Emerald and Monbulk. “We have nothing against the school, but we feel as though the council is trying a band-aid approach to the traffic problems,� Mr Byrne said. “We were here long before the school, and we don’t think we should be affected like this.�

Yarra Ranges Council Director Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said the No Stopping signs were proposed to advise

drivers not to park on the footpath something that the road rules stipulate is not allowed. “The No Stopping signs were being proposed as another way of advising drivers not to park on the footpath,� Mr Varmalis said. “However, due to a number of residents’ concerns that the signs would also restrict parking on the road for visitors to their properties, council has decided not to go ahead with these signs,� he said.

Special focus on science

By REBECCA BILLS TWO local primary schools in the hills will benefit from a successful investment to increase student participation and engagement in maths and science.

Tecoma and Gembrook Primary School will be welcoming two new science specialists in 2014 under an expansion of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Primary Maths and Science Specialists initiative.

Tecoma Primary School principal Rohan Thompson said the Victorian Government made the announcement in early September of additional funding in the state’s budget to train 100 new maths and science specialists to teach in primary schools across the state.

“Tecoma Primary School was one of the schools selected to lift the focus of science across the wider network of state schools,” he said.

“Following an expression of interest within the school, Tecoma Primary School’s Science

Specialists for 2014 and 2015 are Trevor Wilson and Sally Connell.

“Both Trevor and Sally display a passion for this subject matter and a keen interest in developing the science capabilities of the students.”

Mr Thompson said that in the coming months the school will transform one of its rooms into a science room where new and resourcing equipment will give students a launching pad into science.

Minister for Education Martin Dixon said the $24.3 million Primary School Maths and Science Specialists initiative is designed to improve the standard of maths and science education in schools.

“This government considers the strengthening of maths and science education in schools as critically important to enhancing Victoria’s economy through innovation in science and technology, research and development, and in other areas like health, agriculture, commerce and trade.

“It is vital for students to be engaged in maths and science

in primary school, setting the groundwork for future study in secondary school and beyond.”

Gembrook MP Brad Battin said the Primary Maths and Science Specialists initiative is one of a number of targeted programs to support maths and science education, including the development of six specialist science and maths centres across Victoria.

“I look forward to these specialists making a difference in the education of primary school students in Tecoma and Gembrook.”

Minister Responsible for the Teaching Profession Peter Hall said the program has already demonstrated positive outcomes for students and teachers.

“Schools participating in the first round noted improved teacher capacity, confidence and knowledge in teaching maths and science and increased student engagement and achievement,” he said.

Mr Thompson said this was a very exciting initiative and is confident that it will have a significant impact at the school.

Colour art tells Aboriginal story

By REBECCA BILLS MOUNT Evelyn students have paid respects to the owners of the land with indigenous artwork symbolising water, air, fire and earth.

The Mount Evelyn Christian School students, who have strong ties with the Yuendumu community in the Northern Territory, created artworks representing the symbols which also represent the school’s tribal sports teams.

Middle School art teacher Olivia Dyer said the tribes are Wirri (blue) representing water, Warlpa (white) representing air, Warlu (gold) representing fire and Walya (red) representing earth.

Ms Dyer said about 25 students from across the school worked on their tribe’s panel over a day.

“The panels were prepared and a background colour applied a few weeks before our painting day,” she said.

“The students came in one day at the

beginning of term three and we completed all four panels in the one day.”

As part of the curriculum at MECS, indigenous studies is introduced in the Senior Primary School and continued throughout each year level.

Year 10 students at the school study the native Yuendumu language of Walpiri to help further understand the Aboriginal culture, allowing an in-depth investigation into the indigenous way of life.

Magic moments of creation

By REBECCA BILLS HER work is described as delightfully bold, bright and bizarre.

The flamboyant 92-year-old artist Isabel Foster has devoted a huge part of her lifetime to creating work that possesses devotion to thread, colour and the use of ‘reverse garbage’.

Growing up between two world wars, Mrs Foster was raised in a time where thrift and re-using materials was what had to be done with most home furnishings handmade.

Mrs Foster said her upbringing planted seeds of resilience and independence in her creativity and that this exhibition covers a lifetime of her own work.

The exhibition will feature pieces that span the entirety of Mrs Foster’s career including oddballs, coloured armchairs and crocheted tendrils of copper wire.

“I use all fibres - I never know what will come from a warp and because I love my materials, I let them loose in my hands and they take over,” Mrs Foster said.

“I know something exciting will happen - there is a magic moment to be waited for when the work is complete.

“Beyond this, no more need be said.”

Over the years, Mrs Foster has been heavily involved in many guilds, textile

This exhibition is one that shares her knowledge and flair in the industry.

Launching on 14 December, Isabel Foster’s Retrospect: The Challenge of

Colour will run until 16 March at the Burrinja Gallery.

The gallery is located at the corner of Glenfern Road and Matson Drive, Upwey.

Wet and wonderful day raises $18,000

By REBECCA BILLS THE staff and students at Emerald Primary School did not let mother nature rain on their parade.

Earlier this month, the school hosted its annual school fair attracting a crowd of about 2000 people raising one of the biggest totals ever for the annual fundraiser despite the rain taking precedence.

Emerald Primary School Fund-raiser Committee co-ordinator Mandy Seeger said after expenses nearly $18,000 was raised which will go directly back into the school.

“As well as to minimise our curriculum charges and provide improvements to school facilities, the planned target for this year’s proceeds is the refurbishment of our Parent Centre allowing for more cooking classes and the development of our vegetable gardens,” she said.

“After a very wet start everyone’s spirits remained high and a fantastic day was had by all, despite getting a little wet.”

The school hosted rides and show bags for local children as well as a variety of market stalls and school run stalls such as a live auction stall, plant stall and white elephant stall.

Mrs Seeger said the live auction was the highlight of the event with more than 70 items on auction ranging from dinner vouchers, to toys and football memorabilia.

She said every auction winner was thrilled with their bargains.

“The best part was that all auction items were donated so it provided a huge chunk of our profit for the day,” she said.

Mrs Seeger thanked the families and businesses who donated items for the auction as well as the people who donated their time to help in preparation, manning of stalls and all the other jobs that go with running a fair.

“With so many things to think about and organise in the lead up to the fair, the process was made all the more easier with the help of a great group of dedicated and enthusiastic parents that made up our fair committee.”

Secret party with a twist THE secret party is over and all has been revealed.

Signs up around town raised the eyebrows of a number of residents of a secret dance party to be held in the Yarra Valley.

The police were also perplexed by the signs and social media promoted party - but it all went off without a hitch.

Yarra Valley’s first ever Secret Dance Party was held at the Twisted Vine in Mount Evelyn.

Almost 150 party goers attended the dance party and both police and organisers reported no trouble.

Thunder heralds toy run fun

By JESSE GRAHAM MOTORCYCLISTS are being asked to sign up to a good cause and take their toys on the road next weekend for children in need.

The Father Bob Toy Run will be coming to Healesville on Sunday 8 December from 9am and is expected to bring more than 200 motorcyclists to the town for the event.

Motorcycle and scooter riders will be amassing at All Moto Café in Healesville at 9am to depart at 9.30am, riding into the city bearing toys, blankets and tinned food for the Father Bob Foundation.

It is estimated that about 5000 riders will be taking part in the Toy Run across the state, which is organised by the Independent Riders’ Group.

Yarra Ranges motorcyclist and member of the Independent Riders’ Group Heather Ellis said the toy run is about having a fun day on the road and providing a happier Christmas for families.

“All the donations go to the Father Bob Foundation, which looks after members of the community who are living in poverty and homeless people,” Ms Ellis said.

Ms Ellis encouraged any motorcycle rid-

ers in the area to come along on the day and to bring what they could to donate.

She said that the Toy Run had been held since 1978, though numbers had declined in recent years, and she was hoping for hundreds of riders from the Yarra Ranges to take part.

There are no fees or registration required to take part in the toy run - only donations for the foundation.

Safety will be a key feature of the day and Ms Ellis said that the event doubles as an opportunity to promote motorcyclist safety and safe attitudes for car drivers.

“The Toy Run is a fun day for all the family, and it’s also a good time at the beginning of summer to promote motorcycle safety to riders and raise awareness amongst drivers to watch out for motorcyclists,” she said.

Ms Ellis asked that anyone considering toy donations should also try to cater for older children, who will also benefit from the Toy Run. Donations for the Toy Run can be dropped off at All Moto Café in Healesville until Saturday 7 December.

MONBULK’S streets were abuzz last year as the town hosted its Merry Monbulk Late Night Shopping event, and this year it’s expected to be bigger and better.

Merry Monbulk will be held on Friday 29 November from 5pm to 9pm and gives residents the chance to shop locally without having to head off the mountain.

Monbulk Business Network president John Coleman said the late night shopping event was a way to give an economic boost to businesses in town.

“It was great fun and there was an atmosphere of carnival in town,” he said.

Club bent on success

By REBECCA BILLS IT IS a unique mix of football and netball that makes the Upwey Tecoma Football and Netball Club (UTFNC) different from the rest.

The club is affiliated with the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League and last year it won the A Grade and B Grade Netball Reserve Grade Premierships.

Hoping to do the same this season, A Grade netball player Natalie Montanari said the team hopes to have the same results this season.

“It was a really great team effort last year, we worked really hard throughout the year only losing one game the entire year,” she said.

“We had a new coach Christine Robinson with nine dedi-

cated girls to make up our team.

“I hope we can have the same results this season.

“We are a committed bunch but you can only try your hardest.”

Netball co-ordinator Val O’Meara said netball is a sport where players learn to co-operate as a team and not play as an individual.

“Having played and been a part of netball for 66 years, I know the sport is very important to both the male and female players,” she said.

“The friendships that are developed through the team sport as well as general fitness and wellbeing is great.”

Ms O’Meara said as a grandmother at the club, having the two sports together in the one place is great because she can see both her granddaughters

and grandsons playing sports together.

“I’ve coached netball at other clubs where you just play your game and leave,” she said.

“This is different because all the teams are really friendly and club orientated.”

Upwey Tecoma Football and Netball Club currently run a young development group where young buddying players and umpires are trained to go further in their careers.

“This is where our future players are born,” Ms O’Meara said.

The Upwey Tecoma Football and Netball Club are currently looking to increase numbers in their netball teams.

Riders take the jump for annual challenge NEW riders got a taste of competition life earlier this month when the Macclesfield Pony Club held its Annual Challenge for members.

All riders were challenged in the four events of dressage, showing, handy-mount and show jumping.

Many new members took part in their first ever competition with enthusiasm and con-

fidence with commendable results.

The event is designed to expose riders new to the pony club on how a competition runs and to promote confidence in horsemanship.

The four sections winners were Sierra Dempster riding Tom, Chelsea Vanderaa riding Chantell, Annabel Weiner riding Jaffa and Sam Jeffree riding Ollie.

Macclesfield Pony Club currently has membership vacancies.

The club is equipped with two large sand arenas, hick-stead and cross country courses, a jumps training lane, show jump equipment and a newly renovated club house.

Stark pace takes its toll SHEER pace has always been the showpiece of cricket.

The excitement fans get from a Dennis Lillee, Malcolm Marshall or Brett Lee thundering in throwing down brutal rockets.

This weekend, the speedsters in the Yarra Valley took full toll on their unsuspecting victims.

At Coldstream, Matthew Stark cut a swathe through the Mount Evelyn batting line-up to lead the Crocs to a thriller victory.

With Mount Evelyn sitting on 1/33 chasing 122 for victory, most pundits had the Rovers well in front of this contest. Stark with the support of Jarrod Bayliss (2/28), made early inroads into the visitors batting before rearguard action from Luke Jones (34) and Bruce Smith put the Rovers back in the contest at tea sitting on 5/81.

This was short lived, as an excellently executed spell from Stark after tea saw the woodwork rattled.

The visitors’ tail was unable to counter Stark’s pace and accuracy as he recorded remarkable figures of 7/37 to roll Mount Evelyn for 101.

Coldstream now sit clearly on top of the ladder and have an intriguing battle against second-placed Healesville ahead.

Mount Evelyn now needs to regroup, as they have not won since Round Two and host a much-improved Hoddles Creek side.

Seville will be pleased with their all-round effort against Yarra Junction, as the reigning premiers found some

much-needed form.

The Blues were defending a sizeable 235 and left it to fast bowlers Matt Hadlum and Ishara Amarasinghe to break the Eagles in their chase.

Yarra Junction made a reasonable start against the formidable attack, and the weather, to reach 2/30 with Dan Lever (27) leading the charge.

The Eagles just could not deal with the heat coming from Hadlum (4/12) as his blistering speed, and the guile of Amarasinghe (3/37), rendered the Eagles toothless as they dismissed the visitors for 109 to cap off an impressive victory.

Seville now has the chance to turn up the heat on the top four as they travel to Woori Yallock, while Yarra Junction need to turn up the heat on Warburton-Millgrove or they will find themselves drifting from the leaders of the competition.

Unfortunately, weather intervened in the remaining contests which were poised for interesting conclusions.

Healesville remain in second place on the ladder, but will be rueing a missed opportunity to gain ground on Coldstream.

Chasing Warburton-Millgrove’s 179, the Bloods looked well set to chase down the total.

Geoff Stock (26 not out) and John Heywood (19 not out) are forming a formidable opening partnership, and once again had Healesville well out of the blocks at 0/51 when the weight of rain became too much.

Undefeated since Round One, the

Bloods will see next week’s clash with Coldstream as a perfect opportunity to lay claims to being the competition’s best team.

Top netball skills on display at spring comp

By KATH GANNAWAY THE Lilydale and Yarra Valley Netball Association’s Spring Competition continued on Saturday with hundreds of netballers coming straight off a very com-

petitive winter season.

The round saw some excellent netball skills across the 28 sections from juniors through to the open section.

Teams represented in the competition, which

runs 28 sections from juniors through to open at the Mooroolbark netball complex, include Yarra Valley clubs Mount Evelyn, Lilydale, Coldstream and Worawa Aboriginal College.

Knights succumb at Nissankaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands FORMER Sri Lankan fast bowler Prabath Nissanka had the world at his feet.

That was until he took five wickets in a Test match innings against the West Indies 10 years ago only to have his international career tragically cut short by a knee injury on the eve of the 2004 World Cup in South Africa.

After four test matches and 23 one day internationals, Nissanka who clocked at 145 kilometres per hour, had collected the prize wickets of Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Chris Gayle, just to name a few.

When injury struck, he became the Sri Lanka Under 19 bowling coach before progressing to the national team as an assistant.

Now aged 33, he imparts his

knowledge at Pickett Reserve the home of the Ferntree Gully Footballers Cricket Club and he was back on the scorebook again, claiming 5/52 against Knoxfield at the weekend.

The Knights batting first compiled 187 on a slow dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s play and depending on conditions next week it could challenge the Footballers.

Current skipper and reigning Feaver Medal winner Nick Bogar accredited Nissanka for his individual success last season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prabath is just a fantastic coach and he helped me a great dealâ&#x20AC;? he said.

Upwey Tecoma recorded 174 at the Wally Tew Oval against Ferntree Gully on the back of Dain Howeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 77 and had the hosts 3/37 at stumps.

Peter Mannaert and Mohammed Farrukh bowled well for the Gully taking three wickets apiece.

Once again the result could hinge on next weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s conditions.

Eildon Park did not hold on to their catches early after having Johnson Park on the ropes at 2/9 before former Hawthorn Monash team mates Ben Stallworthy (57) and Andrew Devenish (52) added a century for the third wicket.

Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brother, Steve also chipped in with 58 to bolster the total to a match winning 7/260 after 80 overs. Left arm medium fast bowler Nathan Caton-Robertson continues to impress with 4/39 for the panthers.

Due to inclement weather there was no play between Belgrave and Upper Gully at Belgrave and Monbulk at home to Knox Gardens.

Subsequently these matches will be one day games next week to complete the round.

By DENNIS FULLER WITH the promise of the big wet on Saturday at Emerald Golf Club, some brave, ready waterproofed golfers sloshed up for a round of stableford.

The big wet did as promised and dumped seven millimetres of rain on the course during the morning.

Not to be deterred at all was young Broc Reynolds (18) who smashed the entire field to come in with an amazing 43 stableford points to win overall and in B Grade.

That old stager Ken Hill (15) stood tall among the A Graders to play to his handicap to card 36 points.

The rest were bedraggled, saturated and unrequited.

John Fisher was nearest the pin on the fourth, Reynolds the seventh, Hill the thirteenth, Mark Starick the twelfth and David Mackey slipped the monetary notes into his wallet on the pro pin 18th.

Daphne Mackey in the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s competition had a narrow win over Constance Whitlock.

On Wednesday for the Old and Fractured Golf (OFG) using OFG handicaps Brian McCoy (31) gave the rest a real flogging as he wandered in casually with 43 points.

Mike Litchfield (11) came in next with 41 and Bobby Kennedy (20) scored a creditable 40.

Many people arrived at the golf course on Sunday to enjoy the fun, family day, organised by captain Andrew Cutting.

The rain stayed away, mostly, and fun golf was played and many took the moment to get some sage advice from teaching pro Bob Spencer.

There were a few new players who discovered and rediscovered a love of golf.

LAST Saturday was the perfect wet stormy day to show off the new all-round weather athletics track at Morrisons Reserve, Mount Evelyn.

The latest round of Yarra Ranges Athletics Little Athletics was a modified program to allow for the stormy conditions. Even though high jump and hurdle events were cancelled all other events went ahead with many athletes still recording personal bests. Track events provided the closest competition especially the Under 10 boys 800-metre with a tough race won by Patrick Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Leary ahead of Camden Hewitson.

The Under 9 boys 100 metres was also a close race with Bailey Griffiths just sneaking in ahead of Ashley Creighton and Zac Clarke. Georgia Laven represented Victoria at the Australia Primary School Track and Field Championships in Brisbane.

Georgia finished sixth in the Under 11 girls 800-metre final in one minute and 27.97 seconds.

There is no club athletics next weekend - instead the attention is focused on the Eastern Region Relay Championships on Sunday at Morrison Reserve. With 40 teams entered, the Yarra Ranges is hopeful of many medals, qualifiers for State relays and lots of smiles.
