Rich in history and diversity IT’S been wonderful to celebrate the 150th anniversary of local government in Keilor with the community this year. The 150th anniversary was not just about celebrating local government, it was about celebrating the community’s journey, a journey rich in history and diversity. Council, in conjunction with the Keilor 150 working committee, worked closely with the community to deliver a year-long program of events in order to engage and inspire pride amongst residents and the wider Brimbank community. Over 19,000 residents and visitors to Brimbank attended a Keilor 150 activity or event in 2013. On attending a number of the events throughout the year, I was pleased to see the community out and about enjoying the events, and experiencing all that Keilor has to offer. I extend my thanks to the Keilor 150 working committee for their time and dedication in making the event program a resounding success. I look forward to seeing the community at the Keilor 150 finale event - Carols at the Castle; it is guaranteed to be a beautiful evening of music and song, one that will surely be enjoyed by all who attend. John Watson Chair of Administrators, Brimbank City Council
Keilor celebrates its rich history.
Settlement in the city KEILOR’S history spans over 40,000 years, and starts with the original inhabitants of the land, the native Wurundjeri people. The Kurung-Jang-Balluk and Marin-Balluk clans have inhabited the district throughout this time, making it one of the oldest inhabited sites in Australia. First settled in the 1830s by pastoralists James Watson and Alexander Hunter, the district was mainly used for farming and grazing. The township of Keilor was es-

tablished in the 1840s, in which time William Taylor took up residence and constructed Overnewton Castle, which continues to be a key historical site today. The district grew substantially during the 1850s gold rush as a stopover point for travel to the goldfields, with a range of businesses taking up shop in the town. Keilor was also well known for its agricultural contribution to Melbourne and its market gardens throughout this period.
Significant development occurred during the post-war years, with rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s. The district has evolved to become an area of mixed use, with significant residential areas, industrial sites and pockets of semi-rural living, yet still today retains the welcoming village with many reminders of its rich past. The year 2013 is an important year for Keilor and the City of Brimbank because it marks the 150 years
of local government in Keilor. From the establishment of the Keilor District Road Board in 1863, Keilor became a shire in 1871, and was then declared a city in 1961. In 1994, the City of Keilor was dissolved during the amalgamations of local councils by the State Government. The greater part of the former City of Keilor merged with the City of Sunshine to form the new Brimbank City Council.

Sing out for the carols castle THIS year is a significant year for the Brimbank municipality, marking the 150th anniversary of local government in Keilor. It’s been a time for the whole community to come together to celebrate and reflect upon Keilor’s community journey. In the lead up to the 150th anniversary, Brimbank City Council sought expressions of interest from the community to shape Keilor 150 and raise awareness about Keilor’s proud and rich history. Following facilitated community forums, a core community working group was established to create a program which reflected Keilor’s community journey, linking the past and present, and looking towards the future. The council worked closely with community representatives throughout the year to deliver a yearlong calendar of community events. Through the variety of events and activities, Keilor 150 provided a wonderful opportunity to get involved in community events and learn about some of the people, places and organisations who, over the past 150 years, have shaped Keilor into what it is today - a great place to live, work and play. The final Keilor 150 event is Carols at the Castle on Friday 20 December. Everyone is welcome to join this community event and come together to close a fantastic and memorable Keilor 150 year.

Igloo learning
MORE than 960 milk cartons have been used to build a rather unique igloo at a Sunshine North school. Teachers at the Sunshine Christian School have engaged students in the igloo’s construction process to teach them about mathematics, literacy and art. Grade 5 and 6 teacher Michelle Clarke said 963 milk cartons contributed by five cafes, 1.5kg of hot glue sticks and a set of fairy lights were used to build the igloo, which took four weeks to build. Pupils Julia-Ana, Glory and Nikki were among those to check out the finished product. 110639 Picture: SUPPLIED
Crossing plan hailed By ALESHA CAPONE A STATE Opposition plan to remove a pair of dangerous level crossings in St Albans has been praised by the Brimbank community. Last week, the Labor Party launched a proposal to upgrade 50 hazardous level crossings across Victoria between 2014 and 2022 - including the notorious intersection at Main Rd East and West - if they are elected next year. It is understood the project will be an underpass costing an estimated $175 million.
The Furlong Rd crossing has also been earmarked for elimination. Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews told Star that Labor would create a body called Infrastructure Victoria to determine in what order the level crossings would be upgraded. “Some of these, particularly in the West, have been the subject of really tragic incidents, and we will waste no time in allocating the money and removing these level crossings,” he said. St Albans Traders Association president Sebastian Agri-
cola said he felt “very pleased” after the Opposition released their plans. “It is consistent with Labor’s position prior to the last election when they had allocated funding and policy to remove the Main Rd crossing,” he said. “We’re just sick of it. It’s a massive inconvenience and that’s a disincentive to use it. “It’s also a killer crossing, because a lot of people have died there.” Dianne Dejanovic, whose son Christian was killed at the Main Rd crossing last year, said
she placed flowers at the site every week. “I’m really pleased Labor’s come up with this plan and I would be interested to see what transport experts have to say,” she said. Ms Dejanovic said St Albans MP Marlene Kairouz and others in the community have been campaigning to get the Main Rd crossing fixed “for a long time”. Earlier this year, the State Government announced $52 million for pre-construction works and removal of seven Victorian level crossings, in-
cluding the Main Rd one. The Labor transport plan has also proposed building a tolled West Gate Distributor from the West Gate Freeway to the Port of Melbourne to take 5000 trucks off the West Gate Bridge each day. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said in addition to removing trucks from the inner Western Suburb’s roads, this would benefit the Brimbank area. “I’m keenly aware this will make it easier for people to travel between Footscray and Sunshine,” she said.

IT MAY be a long way to the top of the music industry but the Fallen Angels boys are determined to get there. The rock band consists of vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter Aaron James, David Fornaro on guitar and backing vocals, Adam Weimer on bass guitar and drummer Chris Coote. The band members hail from Kings Park, Keilor and Craigieburn. They will play in the Melbourne finals of the world’s largest music contest dedicated to unsigned bands, Emergenza, at the Hi Fi Bar on 8 December.
If the Fallen Angels win the this round they will head to Sydney and compete for a chance to play in Germany in front of 30,000 people. Mr James said he and the other band members enjoyed “the energy and musicianship” which came from performing together. In addition to the Emergenza comp, the band are presently writing and starting pre-production on their debut album. Mr James said the Fallen Angels members were delighted to make the Melbourne finals of Emergenza “Was a great feeling, all our hard work is paying off, we are ready to for gold,” he said.

PARAMEDICS have been called to more than 50 emergencies involving locked vehicles in Brimbank and surrounding suburbs. Data released last week by Ambulance Victoria showed paramedics in the area were called to 53 cases involving people and children trapped inside locked cars between September 2012 and August this year. Nine of the incidents occurred in Caroline Springs, seven in Taylors Lakes, six in St Albans and five in Deer Park. Sunshine and Keilor East logged four cases each, with Hillside and Keilor Downs recording three. Albion, Brooklyn, Sunshine West, Albanvale, Burnside, Cairnlea, Derrimut, Keilor, Sydenham, Taylors Hill, Tullamarine each had two or less locked-car emergencies. The figures were released by Ambulance Victoria to highlight the fact officers were called to cases of children locked in cars at an average of five times per day last summer. More than three-quarters of these incidents involved children aged below four years old. Ambulance Victoria group manager Brett Drummond said as the warmer weather approached Melbourne again this year, drivers needed to be aware that leaving youngsters in a car could be dangerous. “Tragically there have been cases of children dying in hot cars in Victoria in recent years,” Mr Drummond said. “Leaving them in the car even for a few minutes is not acceptable. “Babies and young children can’t regulate their body temperature like adults can, so being left in a hot car can quickly become life threatening. “It doesn’t have to be a scorching hot day for the car to quickly heat up.” Mr Drummond said tests have found a 29-degree day, the inside of a car can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes.

Crossing concerns By ALESHA CAPONE THOUSANDS of people worried about safety and congestion have called for the Melton Highway level crossing near Watergardens Train Station to be upgraded. Dorian Papadopoulos started the Facebook group titled ’Melton Highway NEEDS an Underpass/ Overpass’ on 30 October and the page has since gathered almost 2500 supporters. Mr Papadopoulos said as a frequent user of the Melton Highway, he allows for 20-30 minute-plus delays to get to Watergardens or onto the Calder Freeway, even though he
lives five minutes away. “Since the Sydenham metro line has been extended to Sunbury, it’s become a disastrous and dangerous crossing, with many drivers becoming impatient and illegally running the red lights at the crossing,” he said. “I don’t want us to become the next Main Rd on St Albans, where their local community has been fighting for an underpass at that level crossing for over 30 years.” Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins has launched a petition calling on the State Government to fix the highway crossing. Ms Hutchins said the heavy traf-
fic was also dangerous for students at two secondary schools near the crossing, as they sometimes illegally crossed the rails while the boomgates lowered. “I am concerned about that issue and would hate to see a tragedy occur,” Ms Hutchins said. She has encouraged residents to sign the petition to help get the Melton Highway crossing included in the Opposition’s plan to upgrade 50 of the state’s worst level crossings, if they are elected next year. Labor has selected 40 crossings for the list and will decide the remaining 10 after community feedback.
The RACV’s roads and traffic manager, Dave Jones, said the 2012 ‘Red Spot’ survey highlighted the Melton Highway crossing as a site residents are concerned about. “The Melton Highway was the number one location in Taylors Lakes for congestion,” Mr Jones said. A spokesperson for the Minister for Public Transport and Roads, Terry Mulder, said the former Labor Government “had 11 years to do something about the Melton Highway level crossing, but didn’t”. “The Labor Opposition’s transport plan also ignores the Melton Highway level crossing,” the spokesperson said.
Fight over industry bid By ALESHA CAPONE A COMMUNITY meeting will be held for Cairnlea residents to express concerns about a proposed residential and industrial development in the suburb. The meeting on Monday 2 December will be attended by MP Khalil Eideh, who has spoken out about aspects of the planned development in parliament. Places Victoria wants to redevelop land bordered by Cairnlea Drive and Ballarat Rd with 146 townhouses, 50 apartments, 80 commercial sites and an industrial area. Residents have banded together and formed a group, No Industrial Zone for Cairnlea, to fight the proposal. Among their concerns are a proposal to locate a park near the industrial estate on potentially contaminated land, the loss of 300 mature sugar gum trees and having a “concrete jungle of warehouses” built along Cairnlea Drive. The community meeting will be on 2 December 6.30pm at the Cairnlea Soccer Club, Kevin Flint Memorial Reserve, corner of Furlong Rd and Cairnlea Drive (enter from Furlong Rd).
Violence in the spotlight DEMANDS for family violence services are growing in the West as police refer a record number of victims for help. Women’s Health West (WHW) offers a family violence outreach service across Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay and Wyndham. CEO of the not-for-profit group, Dr Robyn Gregory, said during 2012-2013 police referred 4025 family violence cases to WHW - an increase of 35 per cent on the previous 12 months. For help, call Women’s Health West on 9689 9588 during business hours, after hours on 9373 0123 or the Women’s Domestic Violence Crisis Services of Victoria on 1800 015 188.

By ALESHA CAPONE THE birth of a baby elephant inspired a nine-year-old Keilor pupil to create an award-winning artwork. Grade 3 student Isabelle entered her green papier-mache elephant named Marley into a recent art show at St Augustine’s Primary School. Out of more than 100 entries, Isabelle won the school’s overall art prize. Isabelle said she was inspired to make her artwork in honour the
young elephant Mali, who was born at Melbourne Zoo in 2010. A judge who visited St Augustine’s to pick the winner of the artistic competition described Isabelle’s sculpture as “eye-catching, detailed unique” and “one of a kind”. “I thought I wasn’t creative, but when I won I thought I was creative,” Isabelle said. After she placed first in the contest, Isabelle received a prize pack
including 60 pencils and other artistic materials. “I felt surprised because my friends came running up to me and then started to say I’d won,” she said. “My favourite subject is art because I get to do creative things.” Classes at St Augustine’s also created individual entries for the art show like a candy buffet, a tsunami wave and a beach scene - which Isabelle’s brother Noah helped to make. “I thought it was amazing because
everyone had different ideas,” Isabelle said. She said the hardest part of making her elephant came before she applied the papier-mache layer. “It would probably have been making the body because I had to scrunch the paper up, make it right and put sticky-tape on it to hold it together,” she said. Isabelle said she hoped to become a graphic designer or an artist in the future.

Open for business By ALESHA CAPONE
Sunshine resident Margaret Canuti pictured on the Fraser St land on 17 November. 110637 Picture: CONTRIBUTED
A FORUM encouraging some of Melbourne’s most prolific commercial developers to invest in Sunshine’s CBD was held at the Eureka Tower in Southbank on Friday. KPMG partner Bernard Salt, a trend forecaster for business and government, was the event’s keynote speaker. Mr Salt said people looking for somewhere “to park their money” should consider Sunshine’s town centre between 2015 and 2025. “I think Toorak will be
Toorak for another 50 years but Sunshine is changing – and it’s business acumen to know how it’s changing,” Mr Salt said. He said in the coming decade, there would be growth in demand for services for the five to 15-year-old age group in Brimbank, in addition to residents classed as singles, couples or downsizing. He advised the session’s attendees it would be their role “to find a product and sell to the aspirational market” in Brimbank. Mr Salt said the traditional
character of Brimbank was moving away from its working class origins and the “goat’s cheese curtain” – or “latte line” – was extending in the West from Footscray, Yarraville and Williamstown. “That’s my point, I actually see the goat’s cheese curtain shifting West to Sunshine along the railway line,” he said. Chair of the Brimbank City Council administrators, Jon Watson, said the council has been rezoning land and streamlining planning approval processes to make investment in Sunshine easier.
By ALESHA CAPONE THE grass on a piece of Sunshine land was waist-high on Monday, but the plot thickened when the vegetation was cleared away on Tuesday. Last week, resident Beverley Aird contacted Star because she was worried about the length of grass and weeds growing at 113 Fraser St in Sunshine. Ms Aird said the patch of land was owned by Melbourne Water but usually voluntarily maintained by nearby residents, who won a fight to stop development occurring on the land in July last year. “Since then, we, the neighbours have continued maintaining the land, not Melbourne Water, until our ride-on mower
was out of action for a couple of months,” Ms Aird said. “At this time Melbourne Water were notified that they would have to do the next mow while we waited for our mower to be fixed. “We have hand-mowed an area directly behind our fences to keep down the risk of snakes and fire hazard while we still wait for Melbourne Water to come and clear.” Ms Aird said she and surrounding neighbours have spent the past three months calling Melbourne Water about clearing the land - to no avail. However, after Star contacted Melbourne Water last week, Ms Aird reported someone had turned up to mow the site.
“Sent to the media Monday, cleared Tuesday afternoon,” she said. Melbourne Water’s maintenance co-ordinator David Leggo said the Fraser St land was mowed four times a year to follow high-growth periods, however warm weather and rain has recently “significantly accelerated growth”. “Unfortunately, the scheduled October grass cutting was initially missed, however it was completed as soon as we were alerted to the situation,” he said. “We will be mowing this area again in December. “We encourage anyone with questions about our mowing program to contact us directly on 131 722.”
Books a focus STUDENTS at the Jackson School in St Albans performed in a concert on Thursday and celebrated a Books-in-Homes program on Friday last week. Pupil Bridget, pictured, won the principal’s prize for portraiture and also played an elf in the school concert. On Friday author Neridah McMullin presented books to the students, discussed her book Kick It To Me and led a story-writing session. The special school has about 260 students from five to 18 years old. 110429 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

The trip will cost $3450 including return flights. Two training rides have been set up and anyone interested can take part on 8 December or 19 January, 9am - midday. Brian Mannix ... still Absolutely Fantastic From the indulgent 1980’s with his Band the Uncanny Xmen, right through to those memorable performances on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ our local rocker is still involved in high energy entertaining. More recently Brian has combined with other “legends” from the 1980’s. Of course who can forget Scott Carne from Kids in the Kitchen and Dale Ryder from Boom Crash Opera, just to mention a few members of the line up. The Absolutely 80’s Band is performing their fantastic Christmas Show and Dinner with all their and other greatest hits from the 80’s, at the Taylors Lakes Hotel on Friday 13th December. If you have not seen this band yet then you are missing out on a great high energy Show, so call the Taylors Lakes Hotel on 9217 9500 and secure your Booking. A great night for your end of year work party or family and friends get together before Christmas. Not to be missed.

A MARRIED couple have organised a Thailand cycling trip to raise funds for patient care and research across Western Health’s hospitals in Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown. Dr Andrew Jeffreys is the Clinical Services Director of peri-operative and critical care services at Western Health. His wife of 26 years, Dr Fiona Henderson, is based at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus as a lecturer and coordinator of academic support and development. The pair has encouraged people to sign up for the Western Health and Victoria University Thailand Challenge 2014, a nine day cycling trip from Bangkok along the coastline. Dr Henderson said the idea came about after she and her husband took part in a similar fund-raising event

Ebonnie’s eyes for beauty By ALESHA CAPONE EBONNIE Lord has photographed some of Keilor’s most iconic sites to help celebrate the area’s 150th anniversary of local government this year. Ms Lord has captured images of St Augustine’s Catholic Church, Brimbank Park, Keilor Cemetery, the suburb’s library and Old Shire Hall, which are on display at the Keilor municipal offices. Her photos have also been featured in a concert at Overnewton College, ‘Vivaldi’s Four Seasons of Keilor’, showing on a big screen as an orchestra played. “Because they were playing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the brief was to get photos which were happy and
sunny,” Ms Lord said. Ms Lord said she wanted to include St Augustine’s in the photographic series, because her parents married at the church in 1984. “Photographing this village and surrounds was a sentimental experience for me especially coming face-to-face with the St Augustine’s church for the first time,” she said. “For 28 years we had unwittingly by-passed this treasure on the freeway below, meaning to visit it. “It was eerily beautiful when I finally met its pretty bluestone exterior, I had heard so much about.” Ms Lord is a very busy woman - she is a photographer, reporter at a Ballan newspaper and a Brimbank City Coun-
cil communications officer. She has just started her own business Ebonnie Louise Photography and shot her first wedding two weeks ago. “I have really always loved taking photos,” Ms Lord said. “I really started at the South Gippsland Sentinel Times as a reporter, when they gave me a Canon camera and said, ‘Go and take a picture’ and sent me off without any training or anything like that. “I just find photos are really central to my stories. I really loved taking photos and I always download my pictures before writing my stories. “I think I’m much more of a visual person - images say so much which you can’t with words.”

A FINE idea has been launched at Brimbank libraries in the lead-up to Christmas. All Brimbank libraries will be holding an amnesty on library fines for overdue items from 25 November until 8 December. The libraries will also provide members with an opportunity to donate non-perishable food in exchange for clearing any other overdue fines from their library cards. Overdue items returned in good condition through the library chutes or the self-return stations will automatically have fines cleared. Food collected will be sent on to Uniting Care Lentara, which will redistribute the food to needy Brimbank families. The Food for Library Fines program will allow two donated food items to cover $10 or less in owed fines, four donated food items for $11 to $20 in fines and eight donated food items will cover $31 or more in fines. Last year, Brimbank City Council’s libraries collected more than 2750 items of food during the program, when over 1000 library items were returned.

WHILE the rentals vacancy rate was slightly higher in regional Victoria last month, the differences between towns are so marked that whether or not the data brings good news depends where you are. The overall regional rate was 2.9 per cent, up from 2.7 per cent in September. That bucked the trend which, until September, had fallen for four consecutive months from May’s high of 4.1 per cent. The vacancy rate was just 1.9 per cent in Bendigo and Loddon, where the new Bendigo hospital is tipped to create an even greater squeeze, pushing up yields and rental returns. Median house rental prices in Bendigo were stable at $301 per week in October, the same as in September, although that had been an increase on the August figure of $281. Wodonga, Shepparton and Goulburn and Ballarat and the Central Highlands also recorded low rental vacancy rates - 2.2 per cent in each centre was bad news for renters, but good news for investors looking to buy to let. Ballarat’s median house
rental prices rose $10 per week in October to $280. But in Warrnambool and the Western District the rate was 4.5 per cent while it was 5.3 per cent in the Latrobe Valley and south and west Gippsland. Although still high, this was actually good news for investors because it is trending lower, from July’s high of 6.7 per cent. In Geelong and the Barwon region October’s rental vacancy rate was 3.7 per cent, down from 4.9 per cent in September and well below the year’s high of 6.7 per cent recorded in May. The median house rent in Geelong was $338 in October, down $2 per week on September. Investors are increasingly active in the Melbourne housing market and the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics housing finance data showed a rise in the value of investment housing loans nationally- up by 5.2 per cent, seasonally adjusted, in September. Investors looking to buy in regional Victoria should carefully study their individual target markets as their yields, rental return and ease of finding tenants will vary greatly across the state.

GO WITH THE GREEN
ORBIS GREEN
FROM PAGE 1.
THERE is still an opportunity for home buyers looking to secure an exquisite piece of real estate in one of Caroline Springs’ newest estates, but lots are selling fast. Orbis Green is an exciting boutique estate and is developed by Lawport - the name behind Taylors Hill Estate. It is the closest new release to Caroline Springs, just a few minutes to Taylors Hill or Caroline Springs shopping precincts, Orbis Green is close to everything you need for the perfect family lifestyle. Marketing manager Tony De Pasquale says allotments are being snapped up easily. Orbis Green consists of 89 lots, divided into six stages. The fourth stage of development was sold out recently over just two weekends and stage five is on sale now with 50 per cent of lots already sold. Lots start from $200,000 for about 337 squares, to $255,000 for about 500 squares. The Orbis sculpture which marks the entrance to the estate was inspired by Spanish artist and sculptor Joan Miro. Orbis Green’s northern border will include a proposed new sports park, pavilion and tennis courts plus an adjoining new primary school. Everything you need is close by. The surrounding lakes create picturesque scenery for an afternoon stroll and access to shops, public amenities and freeways is a breeze. Visit the new land sales centre today and discover the art of living at Orbis Green at the corner of Taylors and Gourlay roads. The display is open seven days, 11am5pm. Call 9390 5099 or visit www.orbisgreen. com.au for more information.

F How would you rate your FB: ccooking skills? S SW: I’d never put my hand u up for MasterChef, but I can cook to impress if I have to. I generally follow recipes but end up varying them to taste or because I have different ingredients. I enjoy flicking through recipe books with nice foodie pictures looking for inspiration, but I can be a bit of a lazy cook, and if it looks like there’s more than 10 ingredients in a recipe, I’m about ready to turn the page. FB: What is your signature dish? SW: Risotto – I can always whip up a tasty one, but the family favourite is pumpkin and chicken with fresh coriander. My kids call it ‘orange risotto’ (because of the pumpkin). FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? SW: First course: Ricotta filled zucchini flowers in tempura batter – elegant, light and tasty (experienced this down at Josephs at Werribee Mansion). Main course: Lamb shank with creamy mashed potatoes, roasted eggplant and rocket
““Co sho oking is with uald be enliteke love. It all” – Hbandon, red into (Amer arriet Vaor not at nH ica colunmnewspapoerne nist) r
Food Bytes proudly sponsored by Westpoint Ford
and pear salad with balsamic dressing (just a combination of favourites). Dessert: Sticky date pudding and ice cream or rhubarb crumble and custard (thought I might go for something chocolate until I really thought hard about it). And something to nibble with a night cap – dark chocolate coated candied orange peel (I make this myself and it is to die for). FB: What is your favourite food? SW: Too hard to narrow it down to one but if I have to …an Indian curry with eggplant in it. Do I really have to stop at one? A really, really fruity moist fruit cake. This is what I craved when I was pregnant! FB: What is your favourite drink? SW: Bourbon and coke or a good cup of tea (must have one as soon as I wake up - tea that is - it’s the best one of the day). FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? LM: Robert Murphy from the Western Bulldogs for his
football brain, his insights and his humour, evident in his weekly column in The Age. Shame I have to narrow it down to one Bulldog, but I don’t want all footy heads at the table. Phillip Adams - Late Night Live on Radio National. Best interviewer and conversationalist ever. Malala Yousafzai – the Pakistani school girl who was shot by the Taliban for standing up for girls’ education. J.K. Rowling – her life story and story telling ability are compelling. And she’s a bit
secretive so a lot to find out about her. And Elvis, because I’ve always been a fan, but I wouldn’t rely on him for the conversation. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? SW: Cultivate a worm farm (outside) for all your organic kitchen waste (I keep a mini bin on the bench that gets emptied into the worm farm every couple of days). Organic waste, food etc is about 40 percent of our garbage that goes to landfill. Turn it into good garden compost!
Onpot As you know, I’m a sucker for useful kitchen gadgets and the latest offering from Dreamfarm - the Onpot - would make a nifty little Christmas stocking filler as well. The Onpot is a pot lid holder that rests the lid on the edge of the pot, so the condensation (and food
splatter) drips straight back into the pot. Heat resistant, it’s designed to stay stuck to your lid, so it’s there whenever you need it. Priced at just under $12, the Onpot comes in a variety of bright neon colours. To order, visit www.dreamfarm.com.au

Hawks pick lone Jet By ADEM SARICAOGLU EXCITING Western Jets utility James Sicily lived every young footballer’s dream last week. On Thursday AFL premier Hawthorn used its pick 56 to snare the 18-year-old former Keilor junior - who turned out to be the only Jet selected in this year’s national draft. “I’m pretty stoked and pretty excited to get stuck into it,” Sicily told Star the following day. “They’re the best team currently going around, so I’m looking forward to learning off the senior players and going from there.” Watching the draft from home, Sicily admits he became a touch nervy when Essendon, who along with Hawthorn contacted him earlier in the week, took extra time to make its selection at pick 55. Eventually the Bombers went with South Australian midfielder Orazio Fantasia, allowing the Hawks to swoop on Sicily with the next pick. “When it got into the 50s I was getting pretty nervous,” Sicily said. “I knew that with the last two picks, 55 and 56, that if I didn’t get picked by then I probably wasn’t going to get picked, because they were the two clubs I spoke to during the week.” Jets coach Torin Baker, who prior to the draft rated Sicily his side’s best chance of landing on an AFL list,
was pleased to see the Vic Metro representative get to Hawthorn. “I’m very excited for James,” Baker said. “The fact that he’s gone to a really good club like Hawthorn is fantastic for him and everyone at the Jets is really excited for him.” Used largely as a roaming utility for much of his top-age year, Sicily became regarded as one of the more versatile players going around in the TAC Cup this season. Sicily’s strong marking ability became a feature of his game throughout the year but it was his excellent result in the 20-metre sprint at the draft combine that really turned heads. While acknowledging a strong summer in the gym will be essential, Baker can see Sicily slotting into Hawthorn’s forward line before establishing himself as a midfielder later into his AFL career. “He’s obviously going to have to put on some size to get him in a position where they see fit,” Baker said. “I personally think he’ll be a forward at first that’ll probably play in the midfield later on as his body develops.” Meanwhile Jake Greiser and David Iaccarino, who were both overlooked on Thursday, will be hoping to join their Jets team-mate in the AFL ranks with this week’s rookie draft taking place on Wednesday.

Free footy key to kids’ fitness By LIAM TWOMEY SUNSHINE Heights wants to see as many kids as possible playing football. After not having a junior branch of the club three years ago, the Dragons have enjoyed remarkable success with their, “Free footy’s for kids, footy is fun for everyone,” program. The initiative gives juniors throughout the community, who may not be able to afford to play Aussie Rules, the chance to take part in the game. Sunshine Heights vice president Michael Nicolaides explained the importance behind junior sport and participation. “What we want to do is provide free football for juniors,” he said. “It provides active participation in the local community and it keeps them fit. A lot of these kids often don’t have opportunities to be involved in community sport. “At the moment the program we have got is, if you live in the local community and you have a health care card, then football is free for

Ren Olivieri and Michael Nicolaides are kicking goals through the Sunshine Heights Football Club’s junior program. 110626 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI your child,” Nicolaides said. “If you live in the local community without a health care card, the costs are cut by 75 per cent. “Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for fees you are paying around $25.”
The program has already enjoyed outstanding success with Sunshine Heights fielding junior teams in the under-9s and under-11s this past season. The latter even went on to make the grand final.
As well as assisting with the financial element of junior sport, Sunshine Heights also helps juniors with transport to and from training and games. In order to continue this support in the future, the club is looking for any potential sponsorship for the 2014 season. “The program was all driven by Michael Grima. I can’t speak highly enough of what he has done for the football club. It has just been tremendous,” Nicolaides said. “Unfortunately, the money does go dry when you’re paying for 40 or 50 students to play football. “What we are asking is that any potential sponsors who can help us, not just financially but whether it is a donation or something we can raffle off, that would be greatly appreciated.” Any local businesses in the community that can provide assistance are encouraged to contact Michael Nicolaides via email, nicolaides. michael.m@edumail.vic.gov.au or phone 0412 536 962.
RISING soccer star Georgia Evgeniadis admits to being nervous about playing for her country - but it’s not Australia. The 16-year-old from St Albans is now standing by for her call-up to the Greek under-17 national team after she caught the eye of coach Vangelis Koutsakis. “I’m just really nervous about versing the other teams, like Germany and all those kinds of teams,” Evgeniadis said. “I’m really not sure how they play because it’s different to the way we play here in Australia. “It’s new to me and I think I just want to get the first game over with so I can just get into it and let my nerves die down a bit and see what it’s like.” As part of Cairnlea’s Women’s Premier League team, Evgeniadis is no stranger to a high standard of soccer. Cairnlea coach Jamie Monteith has seen firsthand just how valuable Evgeniadis can be on the pitch, labelling her one of his side’s “unsung heroes” during the 2013 WPL season. “Throughout the season Georgia was a rock and one of the unsung heroes because we had quite a few nasty injuries and we’ve had to put her in centre back and right back,” Monteith said. “So she hasn’t really had that clear run in her preferred position, which is left back, but I personally feel that’s why she’s been called up to the national team.” Monteith believes it’s her selflessness and leadership qualities that will take Evgeniadis a long way in the future. “The reason why she will be successful is because she is a massive team player,” he said. “She understands that sometimes things are going to get asked of you that maybe you don’t want to do or you don’t agree with, but you have to do it for the better of the team, and she’s definitely got that. “I can see Georgia in the years to come - whatever team she finds herself at and as she gets that experience - definitely being a leader and being a captain because she’s very vocal in a positive way. “But she also conducts herself in a very positive way, too.”

Mucci leaps for triple joy Sunshine & Western Region Sports Club Inc.
Don Deeble
Rising
star By LIAM TWOMEY NOT many athletes have the ability to win three national titles in one day. But then again, not many have the exceptional talents of Celeste Mucci. After proving too quick to catch on the soccer field as a junior, Mucci joined the Altona Little Athletics Club before progressing to the Williamtown Athletics Club. It was there she teamed up with club coach David Jamieson and burning up the track became second nature. Competing at the National Championships in Perth earlier this year, Mucci received her schedule for the day, which included the finals for her hurdles, long jump and high jump events. While some would have been daunted by the hectic program, the Seaholme resident produced her best on the big stage. Mucci claimed gold in all three events.
“That was probably the best experience for me so far,” she said. “That day I found out I had all those events and that they were all going to clash as well. “I won my long jump which gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of my events. I just kept going and it was such a good day,” Mucci said. “I didn’t have any family over in Perth so I was by myself with the team. I called my mum at the end of the day and she couldn’t believe it. She actually didn’t believe me at first.” Not done yet, the 14-year-old also joined her Victorian teammates in capturing gold in the 4x100 relay. In her final event of the program, the 100 metres, Mucci just missed a clean sweep and came second in the final. However, she did run a personal best. “I’ve always lost to that girl by a fair bit but this time it was just by a little bit,” she said. “Hopefully in the next race I’ll be able to get her.” Winning is nothing new for Mucci who has made a habit of finishing first throughout her career. The Williamstown High School student claimed two firsts (hurdles and high jump) and two seconds (long jump and 100m) at the 2013
Victorian Junior Track and Field Championships. Across a number of events, there has also been gold at the State Multi Event, 2012 ADIDAS All Schools and Secondary School Victorian Sport Association and State Finals. Not surprisingly, Mucci is aiming for even greater success in the future. “I’m happy doing as many events as possible at the moment,” she said. “I might focus on the heptathlon, which is seven events. If not, I’ll just probably go down to the one or two. “I want to represent Australia at a World Junior Championships or at the Commonwealth Games and then maybe Olympics when I’m older.” For her outstanding sporting achievements Mucci has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Celeste will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in her future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.

Georgies play youth card, with big plans for club JAMIE Chetcuti and the new Sunshine George Cross committee have some big plans for their club. Chetcuti has replaced Darren Farrugia as Georgies president and will lead a new committee of eight into what he hopes will be a very exciting future after what turned out to be an eventful 2013 season. The Georgies are looking to expand and improve on their junior program for 2014 and will also be looking to re-invigorate their men’s senior team, which will again be taking part in State League One next year under Tony Ciantar. “We’ve always climbed the ladder from his first year and second year, so hopefully Tony’s third year
is just as good,” Chetcuti said. However the priority, according to Chetcuti, will be ensuring the club’s youth plays the game in the right manner, regardless of what the scoreboard reads. “The kids are going to be developed the way they should be, applying the FFV criteria and the curriculum,” Chetcuti said. “We’re all going to follow the curriculum from under-age right through to our under-18s, 21s and seniors. “So we’re going to tip it upside down and just try to get as professional as we can and we’re going to try to use a lot of youth in our senior team stepping forward.” The Georgies have also retained the services of former A-League
player Vaughan Coveny, who will lead the junior side of the club once more in 2014. “Vaughan Coveny’s at the top now,” Chetcuti explained. “He’s with the (Melbourne) Victory youth and he knows the process of what it takes and how to coach kids and how to develop kids. “If our coaches just step back and listen to him and take his advice - he’ll be there for them, and everyone’s going to benefit from that.” In another boost for the club, the Georgies will field a senior women’s team next season and will also have six junior girl’s teams. Trials for boys and girls of all ages start this Wednesday at the club’s junior base in Caroline Springs.

AFL draft moves things up a notch GREAT to see Werribee’s Ben Brown drafted by North Melbourne and Western Jet James Sicily get his chance at Hawthorn in last week’s AFL draft. Hopefully a few more names will be added Wednesday morning via the rookie draft. I WAS glad to get plenty of feedback from readers regarding my comments last week on money in local senior football. The vast majority are worried that it is killing the game, and turning players into mercenaries, who are playing for the dollars not the love of the game or the jumper. I have no problem with players being paid, but some of the figures being bandied about are ridiculous for suburban football and I fear they are not sustainable. I have also heard that payments are being made to under-18 players, that is just plain wrong and should be stamped out immediately. The problem is, it is a classic ‘he said she said’ and can never be proved. If my mail is correct, a former Priest Medallist might be making a comeback, but not with the club where he won his medal, which is strange for many reasons. THERE seems to be some mixed messages coming out about the Werribee Racing Club. The Werribee Racing Club is saying that the meeting on 15 December is definitely going ahead and that the meeting could have been held earlier this month but it was the right decision to postpone it. What? I also don’t understand why prize-money for the Cup has been increased. Why do you need to increase the prize-money now? Is this a way to placate
I WAS really happy to launch the new SEN Cricket show ‘Howzat’ last Saturday and have my old mate Billy Birmingham on as our first guest. The show airs every Saturday during summer from 11am till 1pm and features Rodney Hogg, Smokey Dawson and myself talking cricket for two hours. Tickets are still available to hear Hoggy this Wednesday night at the Werribee Sports Club for a special Ashes Dinner. Call Janelle on 9741 9862. BILLY Birmingham has a new best of CD on the market called “Willy Nilly” and it features some of the best moments of the 30 years of the 12th Man. I sent the very first 12th Man record to Richie Benaud to listen to, to give his thoughts for my 3XY radio show. Richie thought it was very funny and my friendship with Billy started then. I marvel at his talent both as a writer and impersonator. As he pointed out last Saturday everyone from kids to females to old blokes now think they can “Do a Richie”. Season for road safety THE Australian Road Safety Foundation is urging all drivers to travel safely and make this season’s road toll zero. Safety Foundation chairman Russell White said most traffic incidents are preventable and all drivers must take responsibility for the road toll. “As always, this Christmas and New Year holiday period we will see an increased police presence on the roads and more road safety messages in the me-
dia, as well initiatives such as Driver Reviver rest stops on our busiest roads. “These measures are significant because research shows that there is no major difference in the daily fatality rate between the Christmas and New Year holiday period and the remainder of the year. “It is important to consider how much worse the holiday fatality rate could be if these additional enforcement, road safety
and fatigue reduction measures were not in place,” said Mr Russell. Australian Road Safety Foundation’s tips for driving safely these holidays: Plan ahead and be flexible - Take a little time to make sure that you and your vehicle are safe before hitting the road. - Plan to avoid the worst peak traffic periods when many highways become congested.
- Allow plenty of time and make the journey part of the holiday. - Schedule regular rest stops. Be alert to changes - Check relevant state traffic and travel information websites or call the relevant number for real time updates about road changes, delays, closures and incidents. Drive to the conditions - This includes your vehicle
you’ll take breaks on your trip. Identify the safest routes - Some routes are safer than others. - You need to know that roadside hazards like trees, ditches, poles and narrow shoulders can increase risk. - Intersections can be dangerous and so can busy roads without a median barrier. Visit www.ntc.gov.au for more information and tips.
and load, the road, weather, traffic conditions, the speed limit and a safe speed may differ and if you are tired or on medication that affects your driving. Watch out for fatigue - Long trips are tiring and fatigue can be deadly behind the wheel. - Plan to get enough rest beforehand and during the trip so that you drive fresh. - Plan in advance where

Roadstar Carry on with a Caddy LIFE is always busy but with a Caddy it can be fun. With efficient engines, intelligent use of space, superb performance and brilliant handling, Caddy is a smart choice and genuinely enjoyable to drive. The Caddy range has been designed to match a busy urban lifestyle. It has to be easy to get around the city and easy to park, too. After-hours, there are kids to collect from band practice and sport en route, you’ll need to duck in to pick up a week’s worth of groceries that fit alongside the sports bags and guitar cases in the boot. The latest Caddy has a stylish face that matches the Volkswagen DNA thanks to sleek headlights and a redesigned bumper and grille, which are paired with an elegant bonnet and front guards. Overall, the Caddy range has a more refined, more sophisticated front end. But it’s not just a pretty face. Caddy sports instrumentation, audio/navigation system and a range of engine and transmission options that achieve impressive fuel consumption and environmental figures.
As expected, the build quality and attention to detail is typically Volkswagen. And when added to the impressive list of safety and security features in the Caddy, it’s a choice that makes tremendous sense. Safety features include driver and front passenger airbags with side head and thorax airbags for added protection. Caddy also features electronic stability programme and traction control system as standard, which will keep the driver safe when the road conditions aren’t. They’ll also benefit from antilock braking system, electronic brake assist and electronic brake distribution - absolute essentials for protecting life on the road. And, for added peace of mind, Caddy now comes with three year unlimited kilometre warranty and capped price servicing. Visit Werribee Volkswagen to test drive this vehicle at 8-12 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, on Monday to Saturday 8.30am6pm, Sundays 10am-5pm, or call 9974 5777 for more information.
The Volkswagen Caddy is the ultimate family vehicle.
