Fixing road woes By CHARLENE MACAULAY

THE State Opposition has kicked off its 2014 election campaign by unveiling a transport plan that includes a truck bypass from the West Gate Freeway to the Port of Melbourne. Project 10,000 is the Labor Party’s alternative to the East West Link and promises to: - Build a tolled West Gate Distributor from the West Gate Freeway to the Port of Melbourne that will take 5000 trucks a day off the West Gate Bridge; - Increase capacity on the West Gate Freeway by adding an extra lane in each direction between the Western Ring and Williamstown roads, using overhead lane management technology currently in use on the M1; - Remove the state’s 50 worst level crossings; - Allocate $300 million in their first budget for the Melbourne Metro Rail project, which will double the size of the City Loop and include five new train stations at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain. The West Gate Distributor will consist of three main components:

West Gate Freeway on and off ramps and an elevated road along Hyde St; upgrade and duplication of Whitehall St between Francis St and Somerville Rd; and the strengthening of Shepherd Bridge and upgrade into Footscray Rd. “We think (the West Gate Distributor) is practical, common sense, real action,” Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews told Star. “The West Gate is one of the worst congestion hot spots in our state. “It will happen, it can be afforded, and it will be delivered and performing its function before the end of a first term of a future Labor Government. It will be open before the end of 2018. “It’s what the West of Melbourne needs. It’s been criticised by the Premier, who mustn’t get out to the West very much, because this just makes sense, and we’re going to get out and do it.” The Opposition said it would build the first phase of the EastWest Link, between CityLink and the Eastern Freeway, if contracts were signed before the next election - but it would scrap the rest of the $8 billion project. Kardashian mania as Khloe hits town KARDASHIAN mania hit Highpoint Shopping Centre last week when Khloe came to town. Thousands of screaming fans flocked to Highpoint Shopping Centre to catch a glimpse of the reality TV star, who was in Australia on a whirlwind tour to celebrate the recent launch of the new ready-to-wear Kardashian Kollection. Fans started lining up from 5am on Tuesday to make sure they would get the full Kardashian experience on Wednesday afternoon, and Khloe didn’t disappoint, spending two hours signing autographs. “This is my very first time in Melbourne, I’m so excited. Thank you so much for having me here,” Khloe said. Young fan Claudia started waiting for Khloe from 2pm on Tuesday with friends Deanna, Lexie and Isabella and said it Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI was worth the wait. “It was the best moment of my life,” Claudia said. 110089

MARIBYRNONG councillor Catherine Cumming has been reimbursed nearly $17,000 in childcare expenses she incurred while she was mayor. The councillor’s quarterly expenses, which were tabled a last week’s council meeting, revealed that then-Mayor Catherine Cumming claimed $16,720 alone in back payments for full time childcare for two of her five children between November 2012 and June 2013. The council only paid Cr Cumming out in the first quarter of the 2013-14 financial year after confirming that she was entitled to full-time childcare as a mayor. “They wanted to check with the Local Government Act that I was actually entitled, because nobody’s ever before requested full-time childcare,” Cr Cumming said. “I’m a 40-year-old woman with five children, five dependents. I’m single and when I was afforded the opportunity to become mayor, I had to put my small children into full time childcare so I could actually carry out my duties fully. “It’s a very difficult situation to have small children at your feet when you’re trying to give a speech, it’s not easy to have small children bouncing on your knee when you’re in a meeting. “I would have loved my children to come around with me to every community event and every minister’s meeting that I ever attended, but that’s just not what you do. “It’s a very unusual situation to have a woman who has dependants be the mayor. Under section 74A and 74B of the Local Government Act, councillors are paid an annual allowance of $22,405 each year and can also claim on any money spent while undertaking their duties as councillors. The mayor’s annual allowance is $69,325.

From Page 1 Mr Andrews confirmed the Labor Party would sell the Port of Melbourne to fund the Project 10,000 initiatives. “It’s no good if we keep getting voted the world’s most liveable city, but we don’t have a world-class public transport system - that doesn’t make sense,” he said. “I want people to have a choice between what I’m about and the performance of Denis Napthine and the Liberals. I think what I’ve announced guarantees there’s going to be a real choice for voters to make.” Footscray MP Marsha Thomson added: “Our Truck Action Plan was curtailed with the election that we lost in 2010, and we are committed to ensuring that trucks that have not originated or destined from the local area aren’t coming through the local streets. “We think that the West has been really looked after in this policy.” And it seems the public agree. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group president Samantha McArthur said the West Gate Distributor was exciting news for the West. “Suddenly, we have a fairly short-term answer to the problem that’s been growing steadily worse over the last couple of decades,” she said.

Pop-up sent on its way By CHARLENE MACAULAY YARRAVILLE’S pop-up park will not return over the summer. Maribyrnong City Council shot down a motion at last week’s council meeting to reinstate the pop-up park this year, with councillors Michael Clarke and Martin Zakharov the only ones to vote for its return. “The move to reinstate the popup park for the end of this coming year and the beginning of 2014 is all about a response to the community’s wants and expectations,” Cr Clarke said. “I’ve no doubt there are some detractors, I’ve seen them, I acknowledge them, however the vast majority of the community want this.” Cr Zakharov added: “It is one

of the most popular things this city has done in the last few years, and one of the most successful on many levels.” But fellow councillor Sarah Carter, who voted against the popup park returning to Yarraville this year, said it was important to encourage people to enjoy other parts of the municipality. “This council made a strategic decision six months ago that we were going to move this around, so all I’m hearing is a dummy spit about Yarraville when we were looking at equity,” Cr Carter said. “We’re simply moving it to a different suburb. We’re not abandoning the pop-up park, we’re sharing it.” The council has committed to a

roving pop-up park program over the next few years, with parklets in Barkly Village earmarked for this summer. The decision comes after months of debate over the future of Yarraville’s pop-up park. It was first installed two years ago and in 2012 won the Mainstreet Innovation Award, but this year two separate petitions with a combined 163 signatures opposed the pop-up park returning this year. The petitions cited loss of business for those not located directly adjacent to the Ballarat St installation and reduced car parking opportunities. In retaliation, yet another petition - this one bearing 1562 signa-

tures - called on the council to make the pop-up park a permanent fixture along Ballarat St. Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith, who circulated the petition, said traders would continue to push for the pop-up park to become permanent in Yarraville. Mr Smith organised a call to arms on Friday evening, where traders and residents did a flash mob rendition of “All I Want for Christmas is a Pop-up Park”. “We are literally in shock,” he said. “The majority are in favour of it, the majority of residents are in favour of it, if the council’s role is to make the environment we live in a better place, what are they doing?”

Free screening saves lives: MP FOOTSCRAY MP Marsha Thomson has called on women to get regular mammograms. Ms Thomson said 51 per cent of women in the Footscray electorate were having regular mammograms every two years, but more needed to take advantage of the free BreastScreen Victoria service. “Women need to continue their commitment to screening every two years because finding cancer early saves lives,” she said. “The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is being a woman over 50 years of age. “With one in nine Victorian women diagnosed with the disease, the free mammogram screening program is the best way of finding cancer early before any symptoms are noticed and when treatment is likely to be most successful.” Women can attend any screening clinic that is convenient. Bookings are required so call 13 20 50 or go online to breastscreen.org.au to make an appointment today.

MEET the future of science. Year nine students Cecilia Rafanan and Marie Bomban, from Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, made their mark at the recent Victoria Science Talent Search. Each won a $40 minor bursary after creating posters for the intermediate posters/scientific wall chart

category. Marie, who aspires to be a chemical scientist one day, said her poster was based on the discovery of influenza. “It was a great opportunity to express my talents through science and explore more topics,” she said. Cecilia created a poster about Dr Fiona Woods, who invented sprayon skin for burn victims. She hopes

to one day be a psychologist. “I chose to do mine on a female, since there aren’t many women in the science industry,” Cecilia said. The science talent search is an annual event sponsored by Science Victoria that is open to all primary and secondary students across the state. The theme for this year’s com-

petition was A Century of Australian Science, allowing students to choose a creative writing piece or create a poster/scientific wall chart. Six other students from Caroline Chisholm - Shayla Gill, Steven Chau, Roxanne Moussallem, Nielany Decallar, Danny Tran and Matthew Laureano - were awarded merit certificates.

Avoid car tragedies AMBULANCE Victoria is warning parents not to leave children in cars as the warmer weather approaches. Paramedics were called out to cases of children being locked in cars around five times a day last summer - with 38 cases across the City of Maribyrnong. Footscray recorded the highest number of cases in the municipality, with 14 calls made to triple zero in the 12-month period.

Meanwhile, seven calls outs were made in Maribyrnong, five in Maidstone, four in Yarraville, three each in Seddon and West Footscray, and one in Kingsville and Braybrook. Ambulance Victoria paramedics were called to more than 1100 cases state-wide last year, with more than 78 per cent of call out for children aged under four years. It’s estimated another 140 call outs were made for adults that were accidentally locked in cars. With summer on the hori-

zon, Ambulance Victoria Group Manager Brett Drummond said leaving children in a car could prove deadly. Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that even on a 29-degree day the inside of a car can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and hit 60 degrees within 20 minutes. “Babies and young children can’t regulate their body temperature like adults can, so being left in a hot car can quickly become life-threatening,” Mr Drummond said.

VICTORIA University is conducting two clinical trials relating to obesity and weight loss - and it needs your help. The Exercise Metabolism unit is currently recruiting participants for two clinical trials. The first one involves a oneday health check at VU’s St Albans campus. The three-hour health check includes a genetic test that looks at an obesity risk gene known as FTO, an oral glucose tolerance test, a body composition assessment and blood pressure and nutritional assessment.

VU is seeking 200 participants aged between 20 and 50 who are considered to be healthy and are not on any medication that influences metabolism. The other clinical trial is a longer-term weight loss supplement program that runs at the Western Centre of Health Research and Education at Sunshine Hospital over 12 weeks. In this trial, participants are used to measure the effectiveness of a novel extract of saffron stigma, Satiereal, on food cravings and preferences. Researchers will also have a

look at body composition and appetite regulating hormones. VU is seeking 84 women between 20 and 50 who are overweight based on their Body Mass Index. “Ultimately, both projects will examine means of reducing mortality associated with an overweight and obese population, and the goal is to inevitably help reduce the social health and economic burden that these conditions have on society,” second year doctorate student Jessica Danaher said. Face the challenge By CHARLENE MACAULAY THESE kids have put a whole new meaning to walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. Students from Footscray City Secondary College and the Yarraville Special Developmental School came together last week for a day of activities as part of a school project to help raise disability awareness among local secondary school students. The day, which was organised by Footscray City College students as part of their Community Learning Project, saw a group of year nine students participate in a range of activities - such as arts and crafts and sports - with students from the Yarraville Special Developmental School.

Footscray City College year nine student Nadire Thomas Capar said the day gave students a better understanding of the challenges people with disabilities face. “The two schools have worked together on Community Action Projects in the past and this day will further strengthen the link between the two school communities,” Ms Thomas Capar said. The Community Learning Project is the final part of a nine-week residential leadership program that Footscray City College students participated in last term at The Snowy River Campus of the Alpine School in Marlo.

By CHARLENE MACAULAY IF THERE was ever the perfect place to hone story writing, Footscray’s 100 Story Building is it. From the trap door leading down to the mysterious 99 floors below, to the never ending story stretched out on one table for young writers to add to, to the bookcase that doubles as a hidden door, the 100 Story Building is all about getting the creative juices flowing for young writers. Five years ago primary school teacher Lachlann Carter joined forces with Jenna Williams and Jessica Tran, who were both in publishing, to offer in-school workshops that allow kids from all backgrounds to develop a love of reading and writing. The first program, Pigeon Letters, saw upper-primary students join forces with wellknown and award-winning Australian children’s book authors, with the resulting works published in Pigeon Letters: Stories in the Post. A sequel has since been published. In September, the trio took the plunge and opened up its own location at Nicolson St Mall. The social enterprise offers school workshops, creative writing excursions, publishing programs and after-school activities for young people in the West. “I saw a lot of challenges for the teachers, particularly because of the diversity of the

opening up the writing process - demystifying the writing process, so that children we work with understand the nuts and bolts of grammar and writing. “This Saturday, 100 Story Building will celebrate the launch of the Early Harvest literary journal, which has had input from 13 students across Dinjerra Primary, Footscray Primary, Footscray City Primary, Footscray West Primary and St John’s Primary.

Foodie culture by river wins out THE silly season is just around the corner and Footscray traders are gearing up for a bumper holiday period. This week we ask Your Footscray ambassadors Matt, Melanie and their dog Jack for their advice on the best things to do in Footscray over summer. Imagine you are hosting a family’s excursion to Footscray, where would you take them? Matt: Footscray Park, along the river, is pretty amazing - and the Arts precinct. Mel: I’d start by walking along the river and stopping at the Happy River cafe at the Footscray Arts Centre for

some breakfast with a coffee, then I’d walk down the river to the park. It’s pre-Christmas and I’m coming to Footscray to shop. Where should I go to buy a unique gift? Mel: The Market seems to have everything. I buy specialty vegan stuff at Vincent’s vegetarian. How do you sell Footscray to your friends and family? Matt: I sell Footscray on its closeness to city and the ease of getting

here. If you’re looking for a quick get out of the city for a bite to eat or casual drink, you can jump on the train and it’s only one stop from North Melbourne so it’s really not that far. Mel: What’s charming about Footscray is that it’s Melbourne’s best kept secret and people are saying, “Look what I’ve found”. Melburnians love finding things - whether it be cafes in alleyways or hidden bars in unfamiliar places. Aside from running your business and looking after the new addition to your family, what do you like to do in your spare time in Footscray? Matt: Discovering the many differ-

ent restaurants and cuisines available. Mel: I love Savers. I’m an op shop junky. I also like Milking Station and Happy River. Jack the dog: His favourite thing about Footscray is the river. The Star News Group is the official media partner of the Your Footscray campaign and will be bringing you exclusive stories straight from the ambassadors’ mouths every fortnight until December. Join the conversation at twitter. com/yourfootscray and #yourfootscray, and facebook.com/yourfootscray.

BRAYBROOK’S new community garden is set to bloom thanks to a donation of recycled organic compost. The Back to Earth Initiative is a green waste recycling initiative between the State Government, the Metropolitan Waste Management Group and the 11 councils across Melbourne’s West and North. The program is promoting the benefits of residents correctly using their green waste bins to ensure it can be recycled back into valuable compost, mulches and soil products. Maribyrnong Mayor Grant Miles said research showed that many people have no idea what happens to their green waste once it leaves the kerbside and why it’s important to only put correct material in the bin. Local resident and Braybrook community gardener Carol said: “This is just fantastic. Compost brings gardens to life.” Residents visiting the website backtoearth.vic. gov.au before 5pm Friday 29 November can go into the draw to win a $5000 garden makeover by answering a few simple questions about green waste bins.

Got the movie munchies? A FRESH batch of thrilling, action-packed, romantic, funny and scary movies will soon hit the cinemas and there is something to suit everyone’s taste. For those hungry for a bit of action, checkout The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in cinemas now. The second movie in the Games trilogy starring Jennifer Lawrence and Australia’s favourite son Liam Hemsworth.

Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very

much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever. In cinemas: Now Thor: The Dark World is still performing strong at the box office and is the second installation of the popular Marvel series. The adventures of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Mighty

Avenger, continue as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos... but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that

even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. In cinemas: Now Screamers beware. Insidious: Chapter 2 is in cinemas now and promises to chill the audiences to the core. The famed horror team of

director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell reunite with the original cast of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey and Ty Simpkins in Insidious: Chapter 2, a terrifying sequel to the acclaimed horror film, which follows the haunted Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. In cinemas: Now

F How would you rate your FB: ccooking skills? S SW: I’d never put my hand u up for MasterChef, but I can cook to impress if I have to. I generally follow recipes but end up varying them to taste or because I have different ingredients. I enjoy flicking through recipe books with nice foodie pictures looking for inspiration, but I can be a bit of a lazy cook, and if it looks like there’s more than 10 ingredients in a recipe, I’m about ready to turn the page. FB: What is your signature dish? SW: Risotto – I can always whip up a tasty one, but the family favourite is pumpkin and chicken with fresh coriander. My kids call it ‘orange risotto’ (because of the pumpkin). FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? SW: First course: Ricotta filled zucchini flowers in tempura batter – elegant, light and tasty (experienced this down at Josephs at Werribee Mansion). Main course: Lamb shank with creamy mashed potatoes, roasted eggplant and rocket

““Co sho oking is with uald be enliteke love. It all” – Hbandon, red into (Amer arriet Vaor not at nH ica colunmnewspapoerne nist) r

and pear salad with balsamic dressing (just a combination of favourites). Dessert: Sticky date pudding and ice cream or rhubarb crumble and custard (thought I might go for something chocolate until I really thought hard about it). And something to nibble with a night cap – dark chocolate coated candied orange peel (I make this myself and it is to die for). FB: What is your favourite food? SW: Too hard to narrow it down to one but if I have to …an Indian curry with eggplant in it. Do I really have to stop at one? A really, really fruity moist fruit cake. This is what I craved when I was pregnant! FB: What is your favourite drink? SW: Bourbon and coke or a good cup of tea (must have one as soon as I wake up - tea that is - it’s the best one of the day). FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? LM: Robert Murphy from the Western Bulldogs for his

football brain, his insights and his humour, evident in his weekly column in The Age. Shame I have to narrow it down to one Bulldog, but I don’t want all footy heads at the table. Phillip Adams - Late Night Live on Radio National. Best interviewer and conversationalist ever. Malala Yousafzai – the Pakistani school girl who was shot by the Taliban for standing up for girls’ education. J.K. Rowling – her life story and story telling ability are compelling. And she’s a bit

secretive so a lot to find out about her. And Elvis, because I’ve always been a fan, but I wouldn’t rely on him for the conversation. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? SW: Cultivate a worm farm (outside) for all your organic kitchen waste (I keep a mini bin on the bench that gets emptied into the worm farm every couple of days). Organic waste, food etc is about 40 percent of our garbage that goes to landfill. Turn it into good garden compost!

Onpot As you know, I’m a sucker for useful kitchen gadgets and the latest offering from Dreamfarm - the Onpot - would make a nifty little Christmas stocking filler as well. The Onpot is a pot lid holder that rests the lid on the edge of the pot, so the condensation (and food

splatter) drips straight back into the pot. Heat resistant, it’s designed to stay stuck to your lid, so it’s there whenever you need it. Priced at just under $12, the Onpot comes in a variety of bright neon colours. To order, visit www.dreamfarm.com.au

THERE is still an opportunity for home buyers looking to secure an exquisite piece of real estate in one of Caroline Springs’ newest estates, but lots are selling fast. Orbis Green is an exciting boutique estate and is developed by Lawport - the name behind Taylors Hill Estate. It is the closest new release to Caroline Springs, just a few minutes to Taylors Hill or Caroline Springs shopping precincts, Orbis Green is close to everything you need for the perfect family lifestyle. Marketing manager Tony De Pasquale says allotments are being snapped up easily. Orbis Green consists of 89 lots, divided into six stages. The fourth stage of development was sold out recently over just two weekends and stage five is on sale now with 50 per cent of lots already sold. Lots start from $200,000 for about 337 squares, to $255,000 for about 500 squares. The Orbis sculpture which marks the entrance to the estate was inspired by Spanish artist and sculptor Joan Miro. Orbis Green’s northern border will include a proposed new sports park, pavilion and tennis courts plus an adjoining new primary school. Everything you need is close by. The surrounding lakes create picturesque scenery for an afternoon stroll and access to shops, public amenities and freeways is a breeze. Visit the new land sales centre today and discover the art of living at Orbis Green at the corner of Taylors and Gourlay roads. The display is open seven days, 11am5pm. Sport Hawks pick lone Jet By ADEM SARICAOGLU EXCITING Western Jets utility James Sicily lived every young footballer’s dream last week. On Thursday AFL premier Hawthorn used its pick 56 to snare the 18-year-old former Keilor junior - who turned out to be the only Jet selected in this year’s national draft. “I’m pretty stoked and pretty excited to get stuck into it,” Sicily told Star the following day. “They’re the best team currently going around, so I’m looking forward to learning off the senior players and going from there.” Watching the draft from home, Sicily admits he became a touch nervy when Essendon, who along with Hawthorn contacted him earlier in the week, took extra time to make its selection at pick 55. Eventually the Bombers went with South Australian midfielder Orazio Fantasia, allowing the Hawks to swoop on Sicily with the next pick. “When it got into the 50s I was getting pretty nervous,” Sicily said. “I knew that with the last two picks, 55 and 56, that if I didn’t get picked by then I probably wasn’t going to get picked, because they were the two clubs I spoke to during the week.” Jets coach Torin Baker, who prior to the draft rated Sicily his side’s best chance of landing on an AFL list, was pleased to see the Vic

Metro representative get to Hawthorn. “I’m very excited for James,” Baker said. “The fact that he’s gone to a really good club like Hawthorn is fantastic for him and everyone at the Jets is really excited for him.” Used largely as a roaming utility for much of his top-age year, Sicily became regarded as one of the more versatile players going around in the TAC Cup this season. Sicily’s strong marking ability became a feature of his game throughout the year but it was his excellent result in the 20-metre sprint at the draft combine that really turned heads. While acknowledging a strong summer in the gym will be essential, Baker can see Sicily slotting into Hawthorn’s forward line before establishing himself as a midfielder later into his AFL career. “He’s obviously going to have to put on some size to get him in a position where they see fit,” Baker said. “I personally think he’ll be a forward at first that’ll probably play in the midfield later on as his body develops.” Meanwhile Jake Greiser and David Iaccarino, who were both overlooked on Thursday, will be hoping to join their Jets team-mate in the AFL ranks with this week’s rookie draft taking place on Wednesday.

Williamstown signs AFL’s Mangan ANOTHER week, another big name signing for the Williamstown Football Club. This time its former North Melbourne listed AFL player Brad Mangan who has committed to the Seagulls for the next two years. The 22-year-old is originally from Kyabram and played TAC Cup football with the Murray Bushrangers. After his junior football finished, Mangan joined Werribee in the VFL. At the Tigers he established himself as one of the best defenders in the VFL and his form was recognised when North Melbourne selected him with Pick 28 in the 2011 Rookie Draft. After being delisted at the end of the 2012 season, Mangan was recruited to West Adelaide where he was coached by Andy Collins.

Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon said the club was delighted to have Mangan on board for the next two years. “He’s a player who we’ve admired in the past and obviously Andy Collins has had a lot to do with in the last 12 months,” Dixon said. “Brad is probably remembered in VFL circles as a real shut down defender but over at West Adelaide this year he played a much different role. “Brad had an outstanding season this year which was recognised by his selection in the SANFL Team of the Year so it’s obviously an extremely exciting acquisition for us.” While playing at West Adelaide, Mangan finished equal fourth in the club’s best and fairest award and gained selection in the SANFL Team of the Year.

Pick of the Tigers By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE lived up to its reputation of giving mature age recruits a chance to reach the AFL system with Ben Brown the latest Tiger to make the jump. Brown was drafted by North Melbourne at pick 47 in the third round of selections. After being recruited to Werribee for the 2013 season, Brown proved a winner, playing in 18 matches for the Tigers as well as being named in the club’s best players on four occasions. His selection by the Kangaroos will mean the forward remains at Werribee when he isn’t playing for the senior side. He wasn’t the only Tiger to end up at the Kangaroos with Luke McDonald taken as a father/son selection at pick eight. After playing his TAC Cup football for the Oakleigh Chargers, McDonald left the juniors behind to start his senior career with Werribee. Werribee coach John Lamont said it was a great result for the club. “We were extremely confident Ben would get drafted,” he said. “I knew he was rated by North Melbourne recruiting staff, without a doubt. “Luke McDonald is obviously a little bit of a different one (being a father/son selection). “Jarred Moore and myself worked closely with him and once it all simplified and he was able to pretty much focus on his Werribee stuff he really came into his own. “He really blossomed in the last part of the season. Across the three finals, he was probably our best player. He did a great job.” The good news didn’t stop there for the Tigers with last year’s rookie selection Kyle Hartigan upgraded to the Crows’ senior list with pick 76. “It was great for Kyle Hartigan as well,” Lamont said. “Twelve months ago he got the rookie list spot with Adelaide and he was re-drafted ... and he will get a two-year deal now. “A lot of kids will give it a go but then come up with an excuse like, I’m not enjoying my footy or they go and play for money somewhere. Kyle really hung in there and kept at it and it was terrific to see.” For the players from Werribee who missed out on selection in the AFL national draft, they now turn their attention to the rookie draft, which will take place on Wednesday 27 November. The Tigers have a host of players knocking on the door of selection including Scott Sherlock, Jake Wilson, Darcy Fort and Scott Clouston.

Mucci leaps for triple joy Sunshine & Western Region Sports Club Inc.

Don Deeble

Rising

star By LIAM TWOMEY NOT many athletes have the ability to win three national titles in one day. But then again, not many have the exceptional talents of Celeste Mucci. After proving too quick to catch on the soccer field as a junior, Mucci joined the Altona Little Athletics Club before progressing to the Williamtown Athletics Club. It was there she teamed up with club coach David Jamieson and burning up the track became second nature. Competing at the National Championships in Perth earlier this year, Mucci received her schedule for the day, which included the finals for her hurdles, long jump and high jump events. While some would have been daunted by the hectic program, the Seaholme resident produced her best on the big stage. Mucci claimed gold in all three events. “That was probably the best ex-

perience for me so far,” she said. “That day I found out I had all those events and that they were all going to clash as well. “I won my long jump which gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of my events. I just kept going and it was such a good day,” Mucci said. “I didn’t have any family over in Perth so I was by myself with the team. I called my mum at the end of the day and she couldn’t believe it. She actually didn’t believe me at first.” Not done yet, the 14-year-old also joined her Victorian teammates in capturing gold in the 4x100 relay. In her final event of the program, the 100 metres, Mucci just missed a clean sweep and came second in the final. However, she did run a personal best. “I’ve always lost to that girl by a fair bit but this time it was just by a little bit,” she said. “Hopefully in the next race I’ll be able to get her.” Winning is nothing new for Mucci who has made a habit of finishing first throughout her career. The Williamstown High School student claimed two firsts (hurdles and high jump) and two seconds (long jump and 100m) at the 2013 Victorian Junior Track and Field

Championships. Across a number of events, there has also been gold at the State Multi Event, 2012 ADIDAS All Schools and Secondary School Victorian Sport Association and State Finals. Not surprisingly, Mucci is aiming for even greater success in the future. “I’m happy doing as many events as possible at the moment,” she said. “I might focus on the heptathlon, which is seven events. If not, I’ll just probably go down to the one or two. “I want to represent Australia at a World Junior Championships or at the Commonwealth Games and then maybe Olympics when I’m older.” For her outstanding sporting achievements Mucci has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Celeste will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in her future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the Western Suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.

AFL draft moves things up a notch GREAT to see Werribee’s Ben Brown drafted by North Melbourne and Western Jet James Sicily get his chance at Hawthorn in last week’s AFL draft. Hopefully a few more names will be added Wednesday morning via the rookie draft.

I WAS glad to get plenty of feedback from readers regarding my comments last week on money in local senior football. The vast majority are worried that it is killing the game, and turning players into mercenaries, who are playing for the dollars not the love of the game or the jumper. I have no problem with players being paid, but some of the figures being bandied about are ridiculous for suburban football and I fear they are not sustainable. I have also heard that payments are being made to under-18 players, that is just plain wrong and should be stamped out immediately. The problem is, it is a classic ‘he said she said’ and can never be proved. If my mail is correct, a former Priest Medallist might be making a comeback, but not with the club where he won his medal, which is strange for many reasons. THERE seems to be some mixed messages coming out about the Werribee Racing Club. The Werribee Racing Club is saying that the meeting on 15 December is definitely going ahead and that the meeting could have been held earlier this month but it was the right decision to postpone it. What? I also don’t understand why prize-money for the Cup has been increased. Why do you need to increase the prize-money now? Is this a way to placate owners and the jockeys with a dollar incentive? I also believe that the jockeys told officials that the track was not right several weeks ago. I won’t be surprised if the jockeys have a very big say in whether racing actually happens on 15 December. I WAS really happy to launch the new SEN Cricket show ‘Howzat’ last Saturday and have my old mate Billy Birmingham on as our first guest. The show airs every Saturday during summer from 11am till 1pm and features Rodney Hogg, Smokey Dawson and myself talking cricket for two hours. Tickets are still available to hear Hoggy this Wednesday night at the Werribee Sports Club for a special Ashes Dinner. Call Janelle on 9741 9862. BILLY Birmingham has a new best of CD on the market called “Willy Nilly” featuring some of the best moments of the 30 years of the 12th Man. I sent the very first 12th Man record to Richie Benaud to listen to, to give his thoughts for my 3XY radio show. Richie thought it was very funny and my friendship with Billy started then. I marvel at his talent both as a writer and impersonator. As he pointed out on Saturday everyone from kids to females to old blokes now think they can “Do a Richie”. THE Altona Bowls Club held a Sports Night last Saturday and it was a great night. The panel included Cam Mooney, Jason Love, Tony Vasil and Lazar Vidovic. What happens in the room stays in the room, but I can say the insights into the football and racing world were enlightening and entertaining. Jason is back in local footy as the new coach of the Port Melbourne Football Club and I think he will be great for the club. They need a new direction and new faces to get them back to the powerhouse they have been.

FOOTSCRAY Edgewater has rocketed to the top of the Premier Cricket ladder following a hard-fought win against Frankston Peninsula on Saturday. The Bulldogs resumed their innings at 2/56 in reply to Frankston’s total of 166 on day one. After the loss of two wickets last week, captain Dean Russ (47 not out) was joined at the crease by Dylan Kight and the pair looked to increase the advantage. The day didn’t start as planned, though, with Russ dismissed by Scott Boland after adding just one run to his score. That left Footscray at 3/64, still 103 runs away from victory. Boland continued to tie up one end and together with opening bowler Jayde Herrick, Frankston built the pressure. However Footscray’s middle order wasn’t going away. Although the contributions of Sunam Gautam (11), Michael Hill (10) and Lucas Dredge (10) didn’t look massive on the scorecard, the trio provided excellent support to Kight. The Bulldogs’ wicketkeeper was the rock of the innings on his way to 60 before he was eventually dismissed with the score at 7/151. With only 16 runs needed for

’Tis the season for road safety THE Australian Road Safety Foundation is urging all drivers to travel safely and make this season’s road toll zero. Safety Foundation chairman Russell White said most traffic incidents are preventable and all drivers must take responsibility for the road toll. “As always, this Christmas and New Year holiday period we will see an increased police presence on the roads and more road safety messages in the me-

dia, as well initiatives such as Driver Reviver rest stops on our busiest roads. “These measures are significant because research shows that there is no major difference in the daily fatality rate between the Christmas and New Year holiday period and the remainder of the year. “It is important to consider how much worse the holiday fatality rate could be if these additional enforcement, road safety

and fatigue reduction measures were not in place,” said Mr Russell. Australian Road Safety Foundation’s tips for driving safely these holidays: Plan ahead and be flexible - Take a little time to make sure that you and your vehicle are safe before hitting the road. - Plan to avoid the worst peak traffic periods when many highways become congested.

- Allow plenty of time and make the journey part of the holiday. - Schedule regular rest stops. Be alert to changes - Check relevant state traffic and travel information websites or call the relevant number for real time updates about road changes, delays, closures and incidents. Drive to the conditions - This includes your vehicle

and load, the road, weather, traffic conditions, the speed limit and a safe speed may differ and if you are tired or on medication that affects your driving. Watch out for fatigue - Long trips are tiring and fatigue can be deadly behind the wheel. - Plan to get enough rest beforehand and during the trip so that you drive fresh. - Plan in advance where

you’ll take breaks on your trip. Identify the safest routes - Some routes are safer than others. - You need to know that roadside hazards like trees, ditches, poles and narrow shoulders can increase risk. - Intersections can be dangerous and so can busy roads without a median barrier. Roadstar Carry on with a Caddy LIFE is always busy but with a Caddy it can be fun. With efficient engines, intelligent use of space, superb performance and brilliant handling, Caddy is a smart choice and genuinely enjoyable to drive. The Caddy range has been designed to match a busy urban lifestyle. It has to be easy to get around the city and easy to park, too. After-hours, there are kids to collect from band practice and sport en route, you’ll need to duck in to pick up a week’s worth of groceries that fit alongside the sports bags and guitar cases in the boot. The latest Caddy has a stylish face that matches the Volkswagen DNA thanks to sleek headlights and a redesigned bumper and grille, which are paired with an elegant bonnet and front guards. Overall, the Caddy range has a more refined, more sophisticated front end. But it’s not just a pretty face. Caddy sports instrumentation, audio/navigation system and a range of engine and transmission options that achieve impressive fuel consumption and environmental figures. As expected, the build quality

and attention to detail is typically Volkswagen. And when added to the impressive list of safety and security features in the Caddy, it’s a choice that makes tremendous sense. Safety features include driver and front passenger airbags with side head and thorax airbags for added protection. Caddy also features electronic stability programme and traction control system as standard, which will keep the driver safe when the road conditions aren’t. They’ll also benefit from antilock braking system, electronic brake assist and electronic brake distribution - absolute essentials for protecting life on the road. And, for added peace of mind, Caddy now comes with three year unlimited kilometre warranty and capped price servicing. Visit Werribee Volkswagen to test drive this vehicle at 8-12 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, on Monday to Saturday 8.30am6pm, Sundays 10am-5pm, or call 9974 5777 for more information.

The Volkswagen Caddy is the ultimate family vehicle.
