Plan to hit the roads By NICOLE VALICEK
TRANSPORT is shaping to be a key priority for Victorian voters in the 2014 election after Labor released its new transport plan. Project 10,000, announced last week, is an alternative to the government’s $8 billion East West Link. Labor plans to sell the long-term lease on the Port of Melbourne to fund its $6 billion project to get rid of the most dangerous and congested level crossings. Hobsons Bay Mayor Sandra Wilson welcomed the new transport plan. “We welcome any commitment to improve transport across Hobsons Bay and will work with all levels of government to secure better public transport and improved road networks,” she said. Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said the project would support the state’s and economy’s growth. As part of Project 10,000, 50 level crossings would be removed with 40 locations already identified across the suburban rail network. This includes the level crossing on Ferguson St, Williamstown. “We think communities will be supportive of that because it’s the right thing to do,” Mr Andrews said. According to the plan, the removal of these crossing will reduce congestion for communities.

Bec plays to her own beat HOBSONS Bay’s Bec Matthews’s taiko drum plays a big part in her latest Circus Oz performance. In her latest show the percussionist performs on an aerial drum kit with an acrobat tumbling underneath her. Her first circus gig was with the Women’s Circus in 2005 and she has been with Circus Oz for four years. Bec is currently performing in Cranked Up which will be under the big top on Birrarung Marr until Sunday 14 July. 110160 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI
Shadow Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said over the past decade there have been almost 200 level crossings crashes, sadly this has resulted in many deaths. “Removing 50 level crossings will increase safety and improve travel time for motorists and allow more train services to run during peak times.” If elected, Labor pledges to create 10,000 construction jobs, build Melbourne Metro Rail into a worldclass public transport system, double the size of the City Loop, build five new train stations and build the West Gate Distributor to take 5000 trucks a day off the West Gate Bridge. “We think (the West Gate Distributor) is practical, common sense, real action,” Mr Andrews said. He said the new road and significant upgrades to roads in and around the port would be a toll road that will take at least 5000 trucks off the West Gate. “The West Gate is one of the worst congestion hot spots in our state, this is real and meaningful. “It will happen, it can be afforded, and it will be delivered and performing its function before the end of a first term of a future Labor Government.” Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the transport alternative would create many benefits for Melbourne and the• Cos inner ei West. Rock ‘n’ revival By NICOLE VALICEK DOOMSAYERS might be writing rock’s obituaries but musician Tim Henwood is welcoming its resurrection and letting people know it’s alive. The Spotswood local, who is best known for his contribution as a member of highly successful bands like Rogue Traders and the Androids, is back as part of a blues infused rock’n’roll band Palace of the King. The band, that includes Leigh Maden, Matthew Harrison, Andrew Gilpin, Anthony Troiano and Sean Johnston will play The Sound Bar in Hoppers Crossing on 29 November. Tim was approached by the
band at the end of 2012 after seeing him sing with former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick. The guys needed a singer but Tim had no intention of joining another band. He offered to help them find a frontman then he heard the instrumental versions of the songs that ended up on the first EP. “When I heard the tunes, I thought, ‘I’m not gonna help anyone else get this gig’.” The band is creating a buzz touring around Australia on the indie rock live scene. They have released two EPs in the past 12 months and will head to Europe in 2014.

AS WE come into the holiday period police in Hobsons Bay are warning residents to take care or risk their own safety and security. Hobsons Bay Acting Inspector Jenny Wilson said they have joined Victoria Police in implementing Operation Summer Stay Campaign, which will run until 6 January. The operation will use all available resources to focus on traffic policing, including enforcing traffic infringements, conducting random alcohol and drug testing. Insp Wilson said these measures will be enforced to ensure they are “doing everything in (their) power to reduce the road toll”. “Each Christmas we see horrific stories of people who have needlessly lost their lives on the road leading up to Christmas,” she said. “The Hobsons Bay policing community are focused on keeping our roads safe.” Insp Wilson said while people might be getting ready for a shopping spree over December, so do criminals. “Last year during December we saw an increase in both house burglaries and theft from motor car offences.” She said many of these thefts could be prevented if owners were forward thinking. “What you are leaving in your car, what can be seen through the windows (An Apple bag containing an iPhone), why not take items straight home.” She also suggested doing security checks on houses now and remember things like - are windows locked, are blinds drawn, do you have good locks and have you put wood along those sliding windows. Recently there have been light-fingered criminals stealing from cars while people are paying for petrol, always lock your car and take your purse and mobile phone with you. “When shopping at supermarkets, in shops and around shopping centres, be careful about putting your purse or handbag on the trolley or leaving it unattended.”

Hot cars are deadly THE number of children locked in cars has risen, according to Ambulance Victoria, and paramedics are warning parents that such a practice could prove deadly. Hobsons Bay had 17 calls for both adults and children being locked in cars between September last year and August 2013. State-wide, paramedics responded to more than 1100 cases of children locked in cars during this same period. That’s an increase of almost 200 on the previous year.
Children under 13 years comprised 87.4 per cent of incidents reported. Of that, 56.7 per cent were toddlers and 22.2 per cent were newborns. The highest proportion of incidents involving children occurred between 11am and 3pm, with 13 per cent between noon and 1pm. More than two thirds happened in a car park, beside a road or at a public place and a further 21 per cent happened at home. Ambulance Victoria said an average of five calls were made a day during summer to triple-zero. Group manager Brett Drum-
mond said leaving children in a car could prove deadly. “Tragically, there have been cases of children dying in hot cars in Victoria in recent years,” Mr Drummond said. “Babies and young children can’t regulate their body temperature like adults can, so being left in a hot car can quickly become life threatening.” He said it didn’t have to be a scorching hot day for the car to heat up quickly. Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that even on a 29-degree day the inside of a car can reach 44 de-
grees within 10 minutes and hit 60 degrees within 20 minutes. “This can be catastrophic, and unfortunately in the past, there have been cases of children dying in hot cars. Leaving them in the car even for a few minutes is not acceptable.” Mr Drummond said accidents where keys were locked in the car with a child were common, while other cases were deliberate acts. “Some people think they can just duck into the shop and leave their child, but there’s a risk they ill be delayed and it’s a risk that’s not worth taking,” he said.
Victim’s search for purpose By NICOLE VALICEK A TRUCK accident 17 years ago changed Belinda Hoy’s life forever but now the 25-year-old is ready to get back to life and back to work. Then Altona resident, then eight years old, was playing with friends on Wildflower Crescent, Hoppers Crossing in 1996 when she was involved in a truck accident. The accident left Belinda with a fractured skull, pelvis and serious internal injuries. She was in a coma for one month and spent many more months in hospital recovering. Belinda is now legally blind and has light perspective out of her right eye only, she has an acquired brain injury which impacts her movements, but she can walk and talk. Belinda can’t vacuum or mop but she does live independently, and she is looking for a volunteer job. Her father Jeff has put the call out to local businesses and companies that his daughter wants to work in a volunteer role in an understanding environment. “I’ve always said now her biggest disability is her capability in dealing with her disability,” Jeff said. “I don’t want her pigeonhole her with other people with special needs because
that prevents her from assimilating with mainstream people.” “People don’t know that she’s restricted and there are disabilities.” Belinda, who volunteers at St James Primary School for a few hours a week, said finding a volunteer job would change her life. “It would mean everything. It would give me a chance to want to get out of the house,” she said. “I don’t know how to put it into words, happy and excited to get out of bed and outside doing stuff.” Belinda said she would enjoy a role that involves packaging or in an office environment but can pick up most things with repetition. She tried to go back to mainstream school after her accident, but was excluded and started to suffer low self-esteem. She was then placed in a special disability school which she attended for six years. “I want to put her into some volunteer work where the employer and employees embrace her and know her history,” Jeff said. “She’s had the accident– we now have a different type of Belinda that’s survived, I’m just trying to get a little bit of heaven back for her, I’m sure there will be people out there who can help.”
AN unlicensed driver in an unregistered vehicle and without a fastened seat belt had an alcohol reading of .178 in Hobsons Bay last week. About 5.10pm on Saturday 16 November, a Hobsons Bay Highway Patrol member was in the Altona Meadows area in an unmarked police car. He observed the driver of a grey Ford driving slowly in Linden St, and upon closer inspection, he observed the driver not wearing her seatbelt. The driver of the vehicle was weaving on the road and at one stage clipped the curb. It was revealed that the vehicle was unregistered and that the 35-year-old female from Rowville was unlicensed. The driver underwent a preliminary breath test, which was positive. The female accompanied police to the Altona North police station and underwent a full breath test. The result of that breath test yielded a staggering .178. The driver told police she intended to drive on the freeway all the way back to Rowville.

Disaster plan in place By NICOLE VALICEK HOBSONS Bay City Council joined forces with Melton, Wyndham and Maribyrnong councils and Victoria Police to test preparedness and responses to emergencies. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the council participated in Operation Devine - a desktop mock emergency management scenario last Friday to test the region’s capability to deliver a co-ordinated response to an
emergency. “The latest exercise comes on the back of a successful practical exercise activation last month, where councils and emergency services worked together to provide relief to over 300 role-playing evacuated residents responding to a mock, fast moving grass fire,” Cr Wilson said. “Through practice it is hoped that if an incident did occur, we would be able to reduce the consequence, size and scope of any emergency.
Operation Devine is a great opportunity for us to evaluate our own Municipal Emergency Management Plan and recovery plans. The latest scenario relates to a simulated event based on a state-wide emergency impacting critical infrastructure resulting in a power disruption of up to 72 hours within Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham City Councils. More than 120 people participated in the exercise.

HOBSONS Bay Hotel will undergo significant changed before opening in June next year. The Hobsons Bay Hotel freehold was sold to the Made Establishment Group, headed by four directors including MasterChef judge George Calombaris and George Sykiotis. The hotel will include a Jimmy Grant’s souvlaki spot and public bar on the ground floor and a Hellenic Republic restaurant upstairs. Mitchell Humphreys and James Gregson of Fitzroys last week brokered the sale of the hotel, located at 28 Ferguson
St, Williamstown. “Upon inspection of the property the group visualised the pub’s potential for some of their key brands and confidently purchased the freehold,” Mr Humphreys said. As well as the iconic Greek tavern Hellenic Republic in East Brunswick and Jimmy Grants, described as “Melbourne’s best souvlaki bar”, the group operate the popular Gazi, The Press Club and PM24 restaurants in the CBD and Mama Baba in South Yarra. Listing agent Mr Gregson said the sale of the hotel to this calibre of owner operator fur-
ther highlights the desirability of Williamstown as a hospitality location. “This type of venue is going to benefit the surrounding shops, restaurants and local community,” he said. The corner site is approximately 300 square metres, on one of Williamstown’s “A Grade retail strips”. The two level building has a total area of approximately 500 square metres with a 10-metre frontage to Ferguson St and 31-metre frontage to James St. The first floor includes a balcony and has city and water views.

Still riding high By NICOLE VALICEK AN INNER suburban horse and pony club will celebrate its 50 anniversary this weekend. Williamstown Horse and Pony Club (WHPC) will mark the event this Sunday 1 December with a celebration and is inviting past and present members to attend. The club has come a long way since its inception in 1963 where it occupied a space behind the Newport Power Station and the horses and riders would leave covered in coal soot. WHPC President David Vinycomb said it’s a marvellous achievement for an inner subur-
ban club to reach the milestone birthday. “It’s partly because we do have local agistment to keep the horses in a paddock,” he said. Mr Vinycomb said the sporting club has 20 plus riders who are predominately female. The rooms are currently being refurbished and upgraded with help from council and will include the upgrade of its toilet and instruction room, he said. Mr Vinycomb said the club has a range of riders - from those that enjoy grooming and learning about horse care - to others who compete at state championship competitions. And while many other clubs
including in Footscray, Yarraville and Altona have closed down, Williamstown is still riding strong. “We’re not quite sure whether we’re the oldest club in Victoria but the Pony Club Association is quite prolific.” “For an inner suburban club to get to 50 is remarkable.” The youngest club member is six years old and the oldest 22 years, not including its life members. Past and present WHPC members and supporters are warmly invited to the WHPC Rally Ground at Quarry Reserve, Park Crescent Williamstown at noon on Sunday.
Arresting artwork impresses By NICOLE VALICEK BABY Guerrilla is an artist that likes to grab your attention and make you think and her latest piece does just that. The Footscray artist was commissioned by the Substation in Newport to create an artwork for the opening of the Big West Festival. “Hanging Around” by Baby Guerrilla is her latest large scale art work that sits on the north of The Substation. The artists said the work is designed to interact and complement the building’s natural structure in a surreal and unexpected way. “It’s supposed to be a whimsical piece and quite engaging,” she said. Hanging at four storeys high the meaning behind the piece is as Baby Guerrilla puts it like any art work; hard to summarise in a sentence, but it is designed to engage and enhance the environment. “It’s designed to appear as though its defying gravity. I try to create a sense of wonder and the sense that anything is possible in my work. “This is a message that can be carried though into any walk of life. I believe art and inspiration can have a ripple effect in our society to change it for the better.” Baby Guerrilla started her artistic life as an oil painter before moving into large scale public art commissions. The artist has created a number of large scale pieces, including one that was 16 metres horizontally in Maddern Square Footscray. She described the process of creating a large scale work of art such as this as a long process with the emotions of creating the piece likened to a roller coaster. “I’ve learnt a lot in this piece that’s going to really help me.” She said the Big West Festival was a good opportunity for the community to engage with art and for bringing artists and the public together.

Plea over callous theft By CASEY NEILL A CALLOUS theft has left a mother and her disabled daughter stranded. Carolyn Russell had convinced her sister Janine Russell, from Newport, to take a welldeserved break at a friend’s home on the night her van was stolen. Janine is the sole carer for daughter Sharamalee, 19, who has Angelman Syndrome, is wheelchair-bound and suffers from uncontrolled epilepsy. “She requires care 24-7,” Carolyn said. “My sister lives in a constant state of sleep deprivation with never a complaint on her own behalf.” On 5 November life got even more difficult for the family when thieves took her maroon 1985/86 Toyota Tarago with registration plates ZGI 519. Carolyn contacted Star in the hope someone might have seen the thieves or have information about the van’s whereabouts. “Losing your vehicle like this can be devastating at the best of times but my sister’s situation is even more dire,” she said. Janine’s only income is a carer’s pension so she’d been unable to pay for theft insurance and can’t afford a new vehicle. “The van she had was barely adequate as Janine had to physically lift Sharamalee from the wheelchair into the vehicle before dismantling the heavy chair and lifting it into the boot,” Carolyn said.
Janine Russell, right, with her daughter, Sharamalee. 110704 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI “But she made do as it gave them a little freedom. “The selfish action of these car thieves has effectively reduced the already-limited quality of life my sister and her family struggle to maintain.” Janine has a son Kaillen, 15, who attends secondary school, works part-time and participates in sport across Williamstown, Newport, Yarraville, Altona North, Altona Meadows and Laverton. “My sister has always tried to keep Kaillen’s life as ‘normal’ as other kids and not to limit his opportunities because of his sister’s disability,” Carolyn said.
“I have never heard him ever complain or wish his lifestyle different. “He always helps whenever he can as a young carer to love and support his sister. “For him to attend his activities he needs to be driven as public transport isn’t always available or reliable.” Janine is temporarily borrowing a car but urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. “I’m not expecting anything for free,” she said. “I just hope someone might have seen the car, or could offer me something I could afford.”

Centre leads new growth By NICOLE VALICEK A NEIGHBOURHOOD House in Spotswood has been upgraded to a ‘stateof-the-art’ training venue, showcasing sustainability and permaculture. Spotswood Community House on Melbourne Rd launched significant improvements and upgrades recently as part of a 12-month project. The project is a collaborative partnership with Williamstown Community and Education Centre (WCEC) and Spotswood Primary School. “The house is a little run down, and this project aims to reinvigorate the venue and stimulate community activity based on the three key principles of sustainability - environmental, social and economic”, centre manager Mark Brophy said. The community house was upgraded with raised garden beds, water tanks, shed and garden plots to highlight aspects of permaculture, water saving, recycling, landscaping and self-sustainability. The interior has also been refurbished. The design and development will take into consideration the needs of culturally diverse groups, those with a disability, elderly and will also be child-friendly. The project also aims to develop new learning opportunities and engage new centre users from the $87 million development underway across the road from the house where 900 new medium density apartments will be built. “By developing the house now, it will allow us to have the venue ready and programs up and running before increased demand occurs,” Mr Brophy said. “Along with the Farmers’ Market and community garden beds at Spotswood Primary School, this initiative has the potential to create a permaculture and sustainability precinct for the developing area.” “From direct funding to timber, skip bins, pavers, design expertise and ‘hands on’ assistance, the sponsors should all be proud that our community can work together on a unique initiative.”

F How would you rate your FB: ccooking skills? S SW: I’d never put my hand u up for MasterChef, but I can cook to impress if I have to. I generally follow recipes but end up varying them to taste or because I have different ingredients. I enjoy flicking through recipe books with nice foodie pictures looking for inspiration, but I can be a bit of a lazy cook, and if it looks like there’s more than 10 ingredients in a recipe, I’m about ready to turn the page. FB: What is your signature dish? SW: Risotto – I can always whip up a tasty one, but the family favourite is pumpkin and chicken with fresh coriander. My kids call it ‘orange risotto’ (because of the pumpkin). FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? SW: First course: Ricotta filled zucchini flowers in tempura batter – elegant, light and tasty (experienced this down at Josephs at Werribee Mansion). Main course: Lamb shank with creamy mashed potatoes, roasted eggplant and rocket
““Co sho oking is with uald be enliteke love. It all” – Hbandon, red into (Amer arriet Vaor not at nH ica colunmnewspapoerne nist) r

and pear salad with balsamic dressing (just a combination of favourites). Dessert: Sticky date pudding and ice cream or rhubarb crumble and custard (thought I might go for something chocolate until I really thought hard about it). And something to nibble with a night cap – dark chocolate coated candied orange peel (I make this myself and it is to die for). FB: What is your favourite food? SW: Too hard to narrow it down to one but if I have to …an Indian curry with eggplant in it. Do I really have to stop at one? A really, really fruity moist fruit cake. This is what I craved when I was pregnant! FB: What is your favourite drink? SW: Bourbon and coke or a good cup of tea (must have one as soon as I wake up - tea that is - it’s the best one of the day). FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? LM: Robert Murphy from the Western Bulldogs for his
football brain, his insights and his humour, evident in his weekly column in The Age. Shame I have to narrow it down to one Bulldog, but I don’t want all footy heads at the table. Phillip Adams - Late Night Live on Radio National. Best interviewer and conversationalist ever. Malala Yousafzai – the Pakistani school girl who was shot by the Taliban for standing up for girls’ education. J.K. Rowling – her life story and story telling ability are compelling. And she’s a bit
secretive so a lot to find out about her. And Elvis, because I’ve always been a fan, but I wouldn’t rely on him for the conversation. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? SW: Cultivate a worm farm (outside) for all your organic kitchen waste (I keep a mini bin on the bench that gets emptied into the worm farm every couple of days). Organic waste, food etc is about 40 percent of our garbage that goes to landfill. Turn it into good garden compost!
Onpot As you know, I’m a sucker for useful kitchen gadgets and the latest offering from Dreamfarm - the Onpot - would make a nifty little Christmas stocking filler as well. The Onpot is a pot lid holder that rests the lid on the edge of the pot, so the condensation (and food
splatter) drips straight back into the pot. Heat resistant, it’s designed to stay stuck to your lid, so it’s there whenever you need it. Priced at just under $12, the Onpot comes in a variety of bright neon colours. To order, visit www.dreamfarm.com.au

Got the movie munchies? A FRESH batch of thrilling, action-packed, romantic, funny and scary movies will soon hit the cinemas and there is something to suit everyone’s taste. For those hungry for a bit of action, checkout The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in cinemas now. The second movie in the Games trilogy starring Jennifer Lawrence and Australia’s favourite son Liam Hemsworth.
Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very
much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever. In cinemas: Now Thor: The Dark World is still performing strong at the box office and is the second installation of the popular Marvel series. The adventures of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Mighty
Avenger, continue as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos... but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that
even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. In cinemas: Now Screamers beware. Insidious: Chapter 2 is in cinemas now and promises to chill the audiences to the core. The famed horror team of
director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell reunite with the original cast of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey and Ty Simpkins in Insidious: Chapter 2, a terrifying sequel to the acclaimed horror film, which follows the haunted Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. In cinemas: Now

THERE is still an opportunity for home buyers looking to secure an exquisite piece of real estate in one of Caroline Springs’ newest estates, but lots are selling fast. Orbis Green is an exciting boutique estate and is developed by Lawport - the name behind Taylors Hill Estate. It is the closest new release to Caroline Springs, just a few minutes to Taylors Hill or Caroline Springs shopping precincts, Orbis Green is close to everything you need for the perfect family lifestyle. Marketing manager Tony De Pasquale says allotments are being snapped up easily. Orbis Green consists of 89 lots, divided into six stages. The fourth stage of development was sold out recently over just two weekends and stage five is on sale now with 50 per cent of lots already sold. Lots start from $200,000 for about 337 squares, to $255,000 for about 500 squares. The Orbis sculpture which marks the entrance to the estate was inspired by Spanish artist and sculptor Joan Miro. Orbis Green’s northern border will include a proposed new sports park, pavilion and tennis courts plus an adjoining new primary school. Everything you need is close by. The surrounding lakes create picturesque scenery for an afternoon stroll and access to shops, public amenities and freeways is a breeze. Visit the new land sales centre today and discover the art of living at Orbis Green at the corner of Taylors and Gourlay roads. The display is open seven days, 11am5pm. Sport Hawks pick lone Jet By ADEM SARICAOGLU EXCITING Western Jets utility James Sicily lived every young footballer’s dream last week. On Thursday AFL premier Hawthorn used its pick 56 to snare the 18-year-old former Keilor junior - who turned out to be the only Jet selected in this year’s national draft. “I’m pretty stoked and pretty excited to get stuck into it,” Sicily told Star the following day. “They’re the best team currently going around, so I’m looking forward to learning off the senior players and going from there.” Watching the draft from home, Sicily admits he became a touch nervy when Essendon, who along with Hawthorn contacted him earlier in the week, took extra time to make its selection at pick 55. Eventually the Bombers went with South Australian midfielder Orazio Fantasia, allowing the Hawks to swoop on Sicily with the next pick. “When it got into the 50s I was getting pretty nervous,” Sicily said. “I knew that with the last two picks, 55 and 56, that if I didn’t get picked by then I probably wasn’t going to get picked, because they were the two clubs I spoke to during the week.” Jets coach Torin Baker, who prior to the draft rated Sicily his side’s best chance of landing on an AFL list, was pleased to see the Vic
Metro representative get to Hawthorn. “I’m very excited for James,” Baker said. “The fact that he’s gone to a really good club like Hawthorn is fantastic for him and everyone at the Jets is really excited for him.” Used largely as a roaming utility for much of his top-age year, Sicily became regarded as one of the more versatile players going around in the TAC Cup this season. Sicily’s strong marking ability became a feature of his game throughout the year but it was his excellent result in the 20-metre sprint at the draft combine that really turned heads. While acknowledging a strong summer in the gym will be essential, Baker can see Sicily slotting into Hawthorn’s forward line before establishing himself as a midfielder later into his AFL career. “He’s obviously going to have to put on some size to get him in a position where they see fit,” Baker said. “I personally think he’ll be a forward at first that’ll probably play in the midfield later on as his body develops.” Meanwhile Jake Greiser and David Iaccarino, who were both overlooked on Thursday, will be hoping to join their Jets team-mate in the AFL ranks with this week’s rookie draft taking place on Wednesday.

Williamstown signs AFL’s Mangan ANOTHER week, another big name signing for the Williamstown Football Club. This time its former North Melbourne listed AFL player Brad Mangan who has committed to the Seagulls for the next two years. The 22-year-old is originally from Kyabram and played TAC Cup football with the Murray Bushrangers. After his junior football finished, Mangan joined Werribee in the VFL. At the Tigers he established himself as one of the best defenders in the VFL and his form was recognised when North Melbourne selected him with Pick 28 in the 2011 Rookie Draft. After being delisted at the end of the 2012 season, Mangan was recruited to West Adelaide where he was coached by Andy Collins.
Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon said the club was delighted to have Mangan on board for the next two years. “He’s a player who we’ve admired in the past and obviously Andy Collins has had a lot to do with in the last 12 months,” Dixon said. “Brad is probably remembered in VFL circles as a real shut down defender but over at West Adelaide this year he played a much different role. “Brad had an outstanding season this year which was recognised by his selection in the SANFL Team of the Year so it’s obviously an extremely exciting acquisition for us.” While playing at West Adelaide, Mangan finished equal fourth in the club’s best and fairest award and gained selection in the SANFL Team of the Year.

Pick of the Tigers By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE lived up to its reputation of giving mature age recruits a chance to reach the AFL system with Ben Brown the latest Tiger to make the jump. Brown was drafted by North Melbourne at pick 47 in the third round of selections. After being recruited to Werribee for the 2013 season, Brown proved a winner, playing in 18 matches for the Tigers as well as being named in the club’s best players on four occasions. His selection by the Kangaroos will mean the forward remains at Werribee when he isn’t playing for the senior side. He wasn’t the only Tiger to end up at the Kangaroos with Luke McDonald taken as a father/son selection at pick eight. After playing his TAC Cup football for the Oakleigh Chargers, McDonald left the juniors behind to start his senior career with Werribee. Werribee coach John Lamont said it was a great result for the club. “We were extremely confident Ben would get drafted,” he said. “I knew he was rated by North Melbourne recruiting staff, without a doubt. “Luke McDonald is obviously a little bit of a different one (being a father/son selection). “Jarred Moore and myself worked closely with him and once it all simplified and he was able to pretty much focus on his Werribee stuff he really came into his own. “He really blossomed in the last part of the season. Across the three finals, he was probably our best player. He did a great job.” The good news didn’t stop there for the Tigers with last year’s rookie selection Kyle Hartigan upgraded to the Crows’ senior list with pick 76. “It was great for Kyle Hartigan as well,” Lamont said. “Twelve months ago he got the rookie list spot with Adelaide and he was re-drafted ... and he will get a two-year deal now. “A lot of kids will give it a go but then come up with an excuse like, I’m not enjoying my footy or they go and play for money somewhere. Kyle really hung in there and kept at it and it was terrific to see.” For the players from Werribee who missed out on selection in the AFL national draft, they now turn their attention to the rookie draft, which will take place on Wednesday 27 November. The Tigers have a host of players knocking on the door of selection including Scott Sherlock, Jake Wilson, Darcy Fort and Scott Clouston.

Sport If my mail is correct, a former Priest Medallist might be making a comeback, but not with the club where he won his medal, which is strange for many reasons.

AFL draft moves things up a notch GREAT to see Werribee’s Ben Brown drafted by North Melbourne and Western Jet James Sicily get his chance at Hawthorn in last week’s AFL draft. Hopefully a few more names will be added Wednesday morning via the rookie draft. I WAS glad to get plenty of feedback from readers regarding my comments last week on money in local senior football. The vast majority are worried that it is killing the game, and turning players into mercenaries, who are playing for the dollars not the love of the game or the jumper. I have no problem with players being paid, but some of the figures being bandied about are ridiculous for suburban football and I fear they are not sustainable. I have also heard that payments are being made to under-18 players, that is just plain wrong and should be stamped out immediately. The problem is, it is a classic ‘he said she said’ and can never be proved.
THERE seems to be some mixed messages coming out about the Werribee Racing Club. The Werribee Racing Club is saying that the meeting on 15 December is definitely going ahead and that the meeting could have been held earlier this month but it was the right decision to postpone it. What? I also don’t understand why prize-money for the Cup has been increased. Why do you need to increase the prize-money now? Is this a way to placate owners and the jockeys with a dollar incentive? I also believe that the jockeys told officials that the track was not right several weeks ago. I won’t be surprised if the jockeys have a very big say in whether racing actually happens on 15 December. I WAS really happy to launch the new SEN Cricket show ‘Howzat’ last Saturday and have my old mate Billy Birmingham on as our first guest. The show airs every Saturday during summer from 11am till 1pm and features Rodney Hogg, Smokey Dawson and myself talking cricket for two hours. Tickets are still available to hear Hoggy this Wednesday night at the Werribee Sports Club for a special Ashes Dinner. Call Janelle on 9741 9862. BILLY Birmingham has a new best of CD on the market called “Willy Nilly” and it features some of the best moments of the 30 years of the 12th Man. I sent the very first 12th Man record to Richie Benaud to listen to, to give his thoughts for my 3XY radio show. Richie thought it was very funny and my friendship with Billy started then. I marvel at his talent both as a writer and impersonator. As he pointed out last Saturday everyone from kids to females to old blokes now think they can “Do a Richie”.

star By LIAM TWOMEY NOT many athletes have the ability to win three national titles in one day. But then again, not many have the exceptional talents of Celeste Mucci. After proving too quick to catch on the soccer field as a junior, Mucci joined the Altona Little Athletics Club before progressing to the Williamtown Athletics Club. It was there she teamed up with club coach David Jamieson and burning up the track became second nature. Competing at the National Championships in Perth earlier this year, Mucci received her schedule for the day, which included the finals for her hurdles, long jump and high jump events. While some would have been daunted by the hectic program, the Seaholme resident produced her best on the big stage. Mucci claimed gold in all three events. “That was probably the best experience for me so far,” she said. “That day I found out I had all those events and that they were all going to clash as well. “I won my long jump which
Celeste Mucci is this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. 110796 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of my events. I just kept going and it was such a good day,” Mucci said. “I didn’t have any family over in Perth so I was by myself with the team. I called my mum at the end of the day and she couldn’t believe it. She actually didn’t believe me at first.” Not done yet, the 14-yearold also joined her Victorian teammates in capturing gold in the 4x100 relay. In her final event of the program, the 100 metres, Mucci just missed a clean sweep and came second in the final. However, she did run a personal best. “I’ve always lost to that girl
by a fair bit but this time it was just by a little bit,” she said. “Hopefully in the next race I’ll be able to get her.” Winning is nothing new for Mucci who has made a habit of finishing first throughout her career. The Williamstown High School student claimed two firsts (hurdles and high jump) and two seconds (long jump and 100m) at the 2013 Victorian Junior Track and Field Championships. Across a number of events, there has also been gold at the State Multi Event, 2012 ADIDAS All Schools and Secondary School Victorian Sport Association and State Finals. Not surprisingly, Mucci is aiming for even greater success in the future. “I want to represent Australia at a World Junior Championships or at the Commonwealth Games and then maybe Olympics when I’m older.” For her outstanding sporting achievements Mucci has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Celeste will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in her future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.

’Tis the season for road safety THE Australian Road Safety Foundation is urging all drivers to travel safely and make this season’s road toll zero. Safety Foundation chairman Russell White said most traffic incidents are preventable and all drivers must take responsibility for the road toll. “As always, this Christmas and New Year holiday period we will see an increased police presence on the roads and more road safety messages in the me-
dia, as well initiatives such as Driver Reviver rest stops on our busiest roads. “These measures are significant because research shows that there is no major difference in the daily fatality rate between the Christmas and New Year holiday period and the remainder of the year. “It is important to consider how much worse the holiday fatality rate could be if these additional enforcement, road safety
and fatigue reduction measures were not in place,” said Mr Russell. Australian Road Safety Foundation’s tips for driving safely these holidays: Plan ahead and be flexible - Take a little time to make sure that you and your vehicle are safe before hitting the road. - Plan to avoid the worst peak traffic periods when many highways become congested.
- Allow plenty of time and make the journey part of the holiday. - Schedule regular rest stops. Be alert to changes - Check relevant state traffic and travel information websites or call the relevant number for real time updates about road changes, delays, closures and incidents. Drive to the conditions - This includes your vehicle
you’ll take breaks on your trip. Identify the safest routes - Some routes are safer than others. - You need to know that roadside hazards like trees, ditches, poles and narrow shoulders can increase risk. - Intersections can be dangerous and so can busy roads without a median barrier. Visit www.ntc.gov.au for more information and tips.
and load, the road, weather, traffic conditions, the speed limit and a safe speed may differ and if you are tired or on medication that affects your driving. Watch out for fatigue - Long trips are tiring and fatigue can be deadly behind the wheel. - Plan to get enough rest beforehand and during the trip so that you drive fresh. - Plan in advance where

Roadstar Carry on with a Caddy LIFE is always busy but with a Caddy it can be fun. With efficient engines, intelligent use of space, superb performance and brilliant handling, Caddy is a smart choice and genuinely enjoyable to drive. The Caddy range has been designed to match a busy urban lifestyle. It has to be easy to get around the city and easy to park, too. After-hours, there are kids to collect from band practice and sport en route, you’ll need to duck in to pick up a week’s worth of groceries that fit alongside the sports bags and guitar cases in the boot. The latest Caddy has a stylish face that matches the Volkswagen DNA thanks to sleek headlights and a redesigned bumper and grille, which are paired with an elegant bonnet and front guards. Overall, the Caddy range has a more refined, more sophisticated front end. But it’s not just a pretty face. Caddy sports instrumentation, audio/navigation system and a range of engine and transmission options that achieve impressive fuel consumption and environmental figures.
As expected, the build quality and attention to detail is typically Volkswagen. And when added to the impressive list of safety and security features in the Caddy, it’s a choice that makes tremendous sense. Safety features include driver and front passenger airbags with side head and thorax airbags for added protection. Caddy also features electronic stability programme and traction control system as standard, which will keep the driver safe when the road conditions aren’t. They’ll also benefit from antilock braking system, electronic brake assist and electronic brake distribution - absolute essentials for protecting life on the road. And, for added peace of mind, Caddy now comes with three year unlimited kilometre warranty and capped price servicing. Visit Werribee Volkswagen to test drive this vehicle at 8-12 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, on Monday to Saturday 8.30am6pm, Sundays 10am-5pm, or call 9974 5777 for more information.
The Volkswagen Caddy is the ultimate family vehicle.

YOU might know the Crafter as the biggest van in the Volkswagen commercial vehicle range and one of the largest and most versatile light commercial vehicles in Australia. But that’s just a small part of a bigger story. Crafter is also one of the most economical, powerful and reliable vans around, offering genuine versatility and functionality to Australian businesses everywhere. Engineered specifically for heavy-duty use, Crafter’s durable common rail TDI engines set the benchmark for output and fuel consumption.
The Crafter excels in two weight classes with the option of an increased GVM and the choice of two wheelbases as a delivery van or cab chassis plus a dual cab chassis variant. The story is equally compelling from the driver’s seat. Sure handling, clear instrumentation, intuitive ergonomics, clever technology, brilliant safety and smart provision of handy cabin space. Crafter knows how to make work easier, safer and more productive. That’s the word that immediately springs to mind when you open the doors of a Crafter van.
