Drug drive capital MELTON had the highest number of drug driving penalties issued in the West, new Victoria Police statistics have revealed. A total of 57 drug driving penalty notices were issued to drivers caught driving under the influence of drugs over the 2012/2013 financial year. Males were the main culprits and were responsible for 46 of the 57 penalty notices issued. Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said drug driving was a major issue on Victorian roads. “Drug driving is a significant issue which appears to be increasing across Victoria and we need to intervene now,” Asst Comm Hill said. “We know impaired drivers are a major contributor to road trauma and have been engaged in a battle to remove them from our roads since motor vehicles first became an integral part of society.” Victoria Police conduct around 3.5-4 million alcohol screening tests and 42,000 roadside drug tests a year in an attempt to combat the issue. In November the state-wide operation, known as Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) resulted in one in 11 motorists test
positive to driving with illicit drugs in their system. Asst Comm Hill said police were astounded with the high number of motorists driving under the influence, despite warnings of the operation. “That figure is nearly double the yearly average of detections,” Asst Comm Hill said. “We need to change the culture where drivers believe it is okay to drive with any form of impairment,” he said. Asst Comm Hill said police were listening to the community and working with road safety partners to introduce new legislation targeting impaired drivers. “Whilst drink driving remains one of the biggest threats on our roads, we recognise drug driving is a significant issue and needs to be a major focus for Victoria Police and our road safety partners,” he said. “That is why Victoria Police has made a commitment to expanding our drug testing capabilities and strengthening our drink driving enforcement capabilities.” Asst Comm Hill said police were committed to their vision of zero deaths and injuries on our roads.

HUNDREDS of motorcycle riders will descend upon Melton and Werribee for a good cause this weekend as part of the annual Melbourne Toyrun. Evan Cassidy from the Salvation Army, the organisation that will benefit from the day, said the event had a proud 34 year history, and had helped many children receive Christmas presents. All of the toys, food and gift cards that are donated by the riders will be collected by the Salvation Army and distributed to other charities to benefit under-privileged children who would otherwise miss out on receiving a gift from Santa. Riders will depart from Melton, Werribee, Cranbourne, Eltham, Epping, Ferntree Gully and Lilydale and the Yarra Valley. Pictured is Kerry Walton dressed up Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI as Santa. Gift giving at Christmas MELTON residents are being encouraged to enjoy the gift of giving this Christmas by donating much needed items to local disadvantaged families. The Melton Visitor Information Centre will be collecting non-perishable food items and toys in the lead up to Christmas which will be distributed by the Combined Churches Foodbanks and council’s Family Services unit. Mayor of the City of Melton, Bob Turner, said the appeal would help give families in need a brighter Christmas. “Christmas is more than just a season, it’s about family,” Cr Turner said. “It’s about giving. It’s about the generosity of the spirit that speaks to people across cultures.” “There are many people in our community who are doing it tough, and this appeal is helping locals when they need it most.” For more information, contact the Visitor Information Centre on 9747 7300.

MELTON Secondary College students are standing together to send a message of positivity and resilience while supporting each other against bullying. This Friday the students will celebrate multiculturalism and embrace differences at the school’s second Let’s Stand Together Day. Assistant School Principal Jenny Buckle said the event was important in increasing resilience in the school community. “It’s a day to promote resilience and for all students to be involved within the community and to support each other,” Ms Buckle said.
“It’s extremely important to show that we actually support each other,” she said. “And if we all support each other and we are all positive then that helps all our learning outcomes in our school.” “It promotes a positive, caring environment where students can get along,” Ms Buckle said. A full day of activities has been organised for students, including workshops for students from Year 7-9 delivered by Project Rockit, an anti-bullying and youth leadership project that offers strategies, stories and programs created for young people. Students will also hear from guest speakers from different
CONSTRUCTION of a new sealed car park located at the corner of Caroline Springs Blvd and Federation Way in Caroline Springs has been completed. The existing gravel car park has been sealed and upgraded to include new asphalt to accommodate 43 car parks, drainage improvements, and improvements to public lighting and footpaths. Mayor of the City of Melton Cr Bob Turner said the works greatly improved the amenity and usability of the area. “The area was previously unsealed and could get quite muddy in wet weather,” Cr Turner said. “This new car park will improve access for residents who use the nearby shops, school and children’s centre.” Melton Council is also completing landscaping works in the area as part of the project. The works include a Tuscan Pathway made up of crushed rock, which was used to create a link between the new car park and the existing sealed car park. Drought tolerant plants will also be added.
PET owners have been advised to get on top of their pet’s identification during December as part of National Pet ID Month. Owners are being urged to ensure their cats and dogs are carrying identification and that their contact details are up to date. The Lost Dogs’ Home operations manager Jodie Addamo said summer was when the shelters had the highest intake of lost pets. Ms Addamo said a high percentage of cats and dogs were unable to be reunited with their owners due to not being identified or carrying out-dated identification. Robbery, assault on the rise By YASEMIN TALAT MELTON has experienced an explosion in robberies and assaults over the last 12 months, according to new statistics. Robbery was up 37.5 per cent during the period 1 October 2012 - 30 September 2013, compared to the previous 12 months. Assault offences were also up 15.5 per cent and assault excluding family violence was up 17.4 per cent. On the flip side property damage, burglary (residential), theft from motor vehicle and theft of motor vehicle categories had all decreased. Acting Inspector Tim O’Connor said Melton Police had implemented
many important initiatives to combat crime and would continue to evaluate and improve on these initiatives. “We have seen significant decreases in areas including residential burglary, theft of motor car, theft from motor car and property damage,” Insp O’Connor said. “This is the result of strengthening our Crime Investigation Unit with specialised Burglary and Vehicle Crime Task Forces. “We are continually striving to achieve reductions in both crime categories.” Insp O’Connor said The Melton Family Violence Unit was working hard to support local families and
ensure appropriate referrals and assistance was in place to help decrease family violence crimes. “We are looking to increase our response in this area which should see significant outcomes and a reduction in this type of offending into the future,” he said. There was also a 32 per cent increase in the “Other” crime category which Insp O’Connor said was not necessarily a bad thing. “We have also seen an increase in our other crime category, which is pleasing in one way because it means we are being proactive with community assistance to identify and charge persons for these offences, including
public order and anti-social behaviour,” Insp O’Connor said. Community safety continues to be a top priority for Melton Police, who are part of safety committee’s set up at identified high risk community locations, including Woodgrove Shopping Centre and Melton Railway Station. “These committee’s consist of police, council and other identified partners who meet monthly to assist in creating a safe environment for our community,” Insp O’Connor said. Insp O’Connor said Protective Service Officers at Melton Railway Station were also a great benefit to the community. “Protective Service Officers are
well and truly entrenched in our community and provide a visible and proactive presence in the afternoon and early evenings at the Melton Railway Station,” Insp O’Connor said. “The benefit of these members is hard to measure but the positive reaction and feedback is pleasing,” he said. “These important initiatives continue to be evaluated and improved on with the aim of improving the public perception of safety and satisfaction with our policing service,” Insp O’Connor said. Anyone with information relating to any crime is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Richard sure knows his numbers BROOKSIDE College pupil Richard Le is proving he knows his numbers. Richard was one of several hundred thousand students from across 40 countries to enter a major global mathematics competition. The Australian Mathematics Competition included 70,000 entries from 600 schools across Victoria, including 117 students from Brookside College. Richard was the only student from his school to be recognised
with an award for his high achievements. He was ranked in the top 25 in Victoria for his age category and was presented with a prize certificate. He was also one in 66 students to win a Prudence Award for the highest number of consecutive correct responses in his school. But it was more fun than anything else for the Year 7 student, whose favourite subjects are Maths and English. “It was fun to solve the ques-
tions,” Richard said. “I chose to enter because I like maths and I’m pretty good at maths,” he said. “I like that you have to do problem solving and it uses logic and you have to think about the problems and solve them.” This is the third year Richard has entered the competition, and each year he gets even better results. Brookside College numeracy events and promotions co-ordinator Rebecca Jameson said Richard’s results were fantastic.
n the g i s e D t Perfeacs Gift m Chrisatt someone for thspecial.
“We were so proud and just over the moon at his achievements,” Mrs Jameson said. “Richard last year received a high distinction, he improved upon his last year’s result and received a prize level this year.” Richard hopes to enter the competition again and achieve a medal which is higher than the prize certificate. The objective of the AMC is to make maths exciting and inspiring for all students from Year 3 to 12, no matter what their maths ability.

VEHICLES damaged in malicious acts across the Melton Shire incurred almost $80,000 in damage bills, new RACV data shows. The latest RACV Insurance claims data revealed that 123 vehicles were damaged between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2013, across the Western Suburbs. Melton Shire had 16 malicious damage claims costing $76,412 and was ranked fourth out of the six western municipalities for number of incidents. RACV general manager Insurance Paul Northey said malicious damage to vehicles caused significant inconvenience to motorists and cost millions to repair. “Last year, RACV Insurance paid out more than $3.44 million to members whose vehicles had suffered malicious damage,” Mr Northey said. Brimbank was the local municipality most affected by malicious damage claims in the West with 37 incidents costing almost $100,000. Mr Northey said the stats were a good reminder to motorists to take simple steps in protecting their vehicle. “With the average malicious damage claim costing $2894, motorists should ensure they have adequate insurance cover to avoid a hefty vehicle repair bill,” Mr Northey said. “Of course, prevention is better than cure. One of the best preventative steps motorists can take to protect their vehicle is to park it off the street and where possible, in a secure garage,” he said. “If you must park on the street, try and park in a well-lit location with people frequently passing by, as this can act as a deterrent to opportunistic thieves and vandals.” Mr Northey said although the tips seemed straightforward, the simplest steps would help protect vehicles. RACV Insurance’s other top tips to protect your car included: lock your garage after parking your car, do not leave valuable items in plain sight and no not leave your car unattended on the street or in a public car park for long lengths of time.

STUDENTS from St Dominic’s Primary School will have many reasons to celebrate this Christmas. The students will have their artwork displayed at the Melton Visitor Information Centre as part of the centre’s annual Christmas display. This year’s Christmas theme at the centre is based around the stained glass windows of St Dominic’s Church. As part of the theme, the students from St Dominic’s have been busy creating imagery that celebrated the history of the church and their school. Art teacher Mrs Lisa Schubert said the students were excited to have their works displayed at the exhibition. “They are really pleased and enthused to know that their work is going on display in a public forum,” Mrs Schubert said. The students have put together a range of works for the exhibition including hanging stained window replicas they created. Mrs Schubert said the students enjoyed taking part in community activities. “As a school, we are always enthusiastic about engaging with the community in a whole variety of ways,” Mrs Schubert said. “We want our children to realise that what they do can be valued and that they can be valuable within the community.” In previous years, students have decorated windows in the community for Christmas.

Swim school goes the extra mile PAUL Sadler Swimland is about to embark on some of the most significant changes to the operation since its inception over 40 years ago. Commencing 20 January next year, the swim school will open for one week longer during each term, a total of 45 weeks throughout the year which will improve swimmers progression through the program.
Customers will receive some great additional services, including the ability to make up every lesson that is missed. There will also be a direct debit payment option, so they can better manage payments throughout the year, BPay payments using a credit card will also be available and staff aim to improve communication, using SMS and email.
These changes aim to provide many benefits to everyone involved by offering greater opportunities for lessons and greater service flexibility throughout the year. Special events on the horizon include Christmas Theme Week which will run from 16 to 21 December. This is where fun Christmas themed aquatic activities will be incorporated
into the lessons. Open Water Swim happens on 8 and 15 December at Brighton Middle Peer. This is a free event and once swimmers complete this swim, it will open the door to a variety of other aquatic options, including triathlons, lifesaving and surfing. Great Australia Day Swim is on at Brighton Middle Peer on 26 January. Paul Sadler has been a swimming teacher since the 1970s. His methods of teaching were producing great results, so
he started a private swim school in Brighton, one of the first at the time in Australia. In 1996 Paul Sadler Swimland took off in Glen Waverley at an already well-respected learn-to-swim institution in Melbourne. As the reputation of the program grew, so did the opportunities with 13 sites opened across Australia and more than 500 staff teaching more than 27,000 children weekly. “We do not take lightly that so many Australians entrust us
with the great responsibility to teach their children to swim. “We continue to ensure we remain world leaders in aquatic education, providing a fun and encouraging environment that continues to produce world class results,” Paul says. Paul Sadler Swimland is at 67 Darnley St, Braybrook, and opens weekdays 9am-6.30pm and Saturday 8.30am-noon. Call 9311 7459 for more information about any upcoming events or lessons.

INVESTORS CAPITALISE ON TIGHTER RENTAL MARKET ESTHER LAUAKI
By ESTHER LAUAKI IT’S good news for investors with latest figures showing a tighter rental market which is driving a rise in the value of investment properties. The statistics may not be so good for renters however as it becomes even tougher to find a rental property. New REIV data shows that Melbourne’s rental market tightened in October particularly in the city’s outer suburbs. The inner city is the easiest place

to find a rental property, but even there the vacancy rate was just 2.9 per cent in October, down from 3.1 per cent in September. This was the second consecutive month the rate had fallen - in August it was 4.7 per cent. Melbourne’s outer suburbs’ rental market tightened the most. Its vacancy rate was just 1.8 per cent, down from 2.5 per cent in September. Suburbs more than 20 km from the CBD the vacancy rate is 1.2 per cent, its lowest since August.
REIV chief executive Enzo Raimondo said that while that was not good news for renters, it was encouraging for investors buying property to let. “Investors are increasingly active in the Melbourne housing market and the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics housing finance data showed a rise in the value of investment housing loans - up by 5.2 per cent, seasonally adjusted, in September,” he said. More good news for investors is that October’s rental market update
shows house rents on the rise in inner, middle and outer Melbourne. The biggest increase in inner Melbourne, up from a median house rent of $510 a week in September to $521 a week in October. In the middle suburbs the median rose $9 to $379, while in the outer suburbs it was up $5 to $350 a week. Apartment rents were more stable, with only the inner suburbs recording an increase compared with September and that was just $2 a week.

HOMES SELLING FASTER IN REGIONAL VICTORIA As buyers take advantage of the few weeks left before the Christmas slowdown in the property market, the number of days homes were on the market by private sale in regional Victoria fell to its lowest level in almost two years in October. Selling times fell in both Melbourne and regional areas, with the average number of days on the market in the regions falling from 113 to 92. Although these figures are not seasonally adjusted and the average number of days on market generally falls in October, this is also due to the strong market at a time of easily available finance with low interest rates. With so much publicity about the number of auctions scheduled at this time of year and the “super Saturday” auction days taking place in Melbourne, it is easy to forget that most house sales in Victoria are private sales. This is particularly so in regional areas. While auction clearance rates enable measurement of the

auction market’s performance, days on the market - that is, the length of time it takes the property to sell enable measurement of the performance of private sales. Generally, a shorter time on the market reflects a stronger market. The October result of 92 days was the lowest since 88 days in November 2011 and the first time since June 2012, when the figure was 98 days, that it had fallen below 100. The number of days a property is on market is linked to the negotiation process the sooner the buyer and seller can agree on a price, the quicker the sale. The real estate agent’s role is to facilitate this, but when buyers are negotiating they should remember that the agent is legally obliged to act in the best interests of the seller they represent, not the buyer. Buyers who feel they need someone to represent them can use the services of a buyer’s agent.
CARE FOR CARLISLE CUSTOMERS HARD work and dedication to delivering the best customer service is what sets Carlisle Homes apart from the rest. Carlisle Homes has been awarded the 2013 Customer Service Award at the HIA-CSR Victorian Home and Kitchen and Bathroom Awards held on Friday 8 November at the Crown Palladium. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) Awards night is a prestigious annual event which recognises excellence in the construction, design, innovation and technology of residential housing in Victoria. Executive director for HIA Victoria Gil King recognised the winners saying “the HIA awards are held in the highest regard within the residential building community and have grown to become the state’s most distinguished housing

awards program”. With a judging panel of 37 independent individuals who have a range of experience and expertise within the Victorian residential construction industry, the HIA Victorian judging panel operates independently from the HIA and its committees, further validating the award’s fairness and attention to detail. The HIA Customer Service Award recognises excellence in customer service for builders or suppliers to the building industry including manufacturers, suppliers, government departments and professional service members. The judging criteria of the HIA Customer Service Award included a review of areas such as customer service policy, communication, research and development, customer service levels and customer satisfaction.
Carlisle’s executive director John Doulgeridis recognised the achievement as a culmination of hard work from the entire company. “We see this as a great opportunity to clearly distinguish ourselves as being the best in customer service. “This award could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of our staff. “Carlisle Homes are excited to be recognised as an industry leader in customer service and have vowed to continue to look for innovative ways to further fulfil their customers’ needs, whilst striving to provide customers with a memorable building experience.” Contact Carlisle Homes on 8561 4744 or visit www. carlislehomes.com.au for more information.

Portable barbecues to suit your dwelling CHANGE is inevitable. Australians’ lifestyles are changing, their homes are changing, vehicles and even the great national tradition of the Aussie barbecue has been transformed. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2011, only 1.6 houses were being built for every apartment compared to one apartment for every three
houses in the 90s. As result of the increase in city dwellers, down-sizers and baby boomers, many are opting for an apartment lifestyle over a house. Quite simply, the great Aussie backyard does not exist for many Australians and with more Aussies than ever hitting the road this summer, the great
Its all about the compact, portable barbecue this summer.
Aussie barbecue is changing as a result. One thing most Aussies will remember to pack when they hit the road this summer, is their much-loved barbecue. A new wave of compact and portable barbecues has come in response to these Australian lifestyle shifts. Australian culture is chang-
ing, but one thing remains the same - enjoying great tasting barbecue food with family and friends. You don’t need to sacrifice great tasting barbecue food just because you live in an apartment or a rental unit or you’re on the road. By investing in a good quality compact gas barbecue, you can still enjoy the beauty of cooking outdoors, plus you have the flexibility to take it
with you when out and about or when you move home. There is a wide range of compact burners on the market which includes the two most popular Weber Grill and Gasmate Adventurer BBQ. Weber has redesigned their entry level gas grills, the Spirit Line. These are two and threeburner gas grills range. The spirit grills are the smallest of Weber’s gas grills, so they might just be perfect for the
person looking for a small grill for a small space. Weber Spirit gas grills are made by Weber in China. The Gasmate is compact portable barbecue with generous 460mm x 240mm non-stick cooking surface, is quick and easy set-up and folds down to a compact size - 440mm x 590mm for easy transport and storage. It only weighs 7.5kgs which means it can go where you do.

Festive jazz up for home HOUSEHOLD items or trinkets that mean something to your family could make for some spectacular Christmas decorations this season. Getting into the festive spirit need not be very expensive or labour intensive with a few ideas to help you create your own decorations to wow your guests. Give your guests a dramatic
welcome: A pair of inexpensive plastic urns from the garden centre instantly dress up a front doorway. Place a tall foam cone in each urn, anchor it with sand, then use florist sticks and wire to attach greenery and Christmas balls. Make an easy table topper centrepiece by buying a garland of greenery available at garden centres to run down the length
of your table. Send your kids out to collect pinecones, and use them as rustic toppers. You can also buy pinecones at garden or craft stores. Another festive idea could be to load a simple glass jar or bowl with multiples of the same fruit, nut, or monochromatic ornament. Trifle bowls filled with red apples and green
baby artichokes-- the colours of Christmas -- and walnuts look especially festive. Or you could try bowls of lemons and limes as an alternative. For a subtle outdoor decoration, gather pinecones of various sizes and arrange them in a window box or in pots on your porch, sprinkling the tiniest ones on top. The weatherproof display should last until next season.
Instead of the traditional evergreen, try a homemade wreath of citrus fruits. Start with a circular piece of florist’s foam, then use wooden florist’s picks to secure large items, such as oranges, first. Continue with smaller fruit?persimmons, clementines, limes. Tie with a thick velvet ribbon. Personalised place setting adds a very nice touch to Christmas lunch. Serve holiday dinner
buffet style and wrap each dish in a sheet of parchment paper and tie with a length of ribbon before stacking it. Guests will be rewarded with a pretty presentation not to mention a little gift-opening practice. Get creative this Christmas and make the most of the material around you to make your house sparkle for the festive season.
Spruce up your home the festive season.

Workmates ease pinch of hunger PUTTING in place a Workplace Giving Program in support of Foodbank, is an easy and rewarding way to support the elimination of hunger in Australia. A Workplace Giving Program is one of the simplest and most efficient ways of initiating a Corporate Social Responsibility program within your business. It shows you are committed to working in partnership with the broader community, in particular the causes your employees care about - something which is of increasing importance to all your stakeholders. The administration can be undertaken as part of normal payroll procedures. Modern payroll systems are able to accommodate payroll giving, there are no tax forms to com-
plete and the records required are straight forward. A Workplace Giving Program provides an easy way for you to make a regular commitment to a cause you care about. It allows you to make smaller donations spread over the year, rather than a larger one-off donation. Donations are taken care of by the company eliminating the need to arrange cash or cheques or set up direct debits. The method is cost-effective, so it costs less to give more. The donations are made from pre-tax salary which means you receive the tax benefit immediately and there is no need to request receipts or substantiate the donations for tax purposes later. The system is easy to opt in and out of, giving you full con-
trol over their giving. Donations via a Workplace Giving Program provide a regular and reliable income to Foodbank ensuring our vital services and programs can continue and allowing us to budget and plan ahead. While Foodbank receives funds from the government and the corporate sector, donations from the public are critical to enabling us to provide our vital service. Workplace Giving funds are not used for administration - every dollar is utilised to generate additional food through our collaborative supply program. Workplace Giving is living proof that small change can make a big difference. Visit foodbank.org.au to find out more about the scheme.

Pace LEN BAKER
Clear win to Mister Elwood MELTON trainer Sue Hunter combined with Gavin Lang to land the Kilmore H.R.C. Trotters Mobile for T2 and T3 class over 2180 metres at Kilmore on Tuesday with smart pacing bred sixyear-old Elsu/Amanda Woodward gelding Mister Elwood. Having his first outing since May, Mister Elwood - starting inside the second line - was soon travelling just of the speed in the running line, with Conchs Critter leading from the pole. His task was made a lot easier as two of the main fancies Chevals Racer (gate two) and Star Style (gate five) galloped away. Sent forward three wide gradually in the final circuit, Mister Elwood raced clear over the concluding stages to defeat the honest mare Sultry Lady which moved to face the open at the bell from three back of the markers after an unsuccessful bid for the front running from gate four, with Tawonga South third off a three-wide trail last lap from last on the back of the winner. The mile rate 2-02.4. COIMADAI trainer Adam Kelly snared the Michael Jackson Tribute Friday 6 December three-year-old pace over 1710 metres at Bray Raceway Ballarat on Friday with Kiwi-bred Art Major/Badlands Legend filly My Bella Starr - in a race that was certainly no thriller. Driven by Gavin Lang, My Bella Starr raced very greenly out of gate five as the start was effected, resulting in her being left in the open outside the well supported Tallulah Bay. With Gavin putting the foot to the floor in the last lap, My Bella Starr crossed to lead prior to the home turn, before coasting to the wire 7.6 metres in advance of Tullulah Bay and Fast Rockin Paige (one/one home turn) in a mile rate of 1-59.1. MEETINGS for the week: Wednesday - Bendigo, Thursday - Geelong/Nyah at Swan Hill, Friday - Wedderburn at Melton, Saturday - Cranbourne (Cup), Sunday - Wangaratta at Shepparton, Monday - Charlton, Tuesday - Ararat. HORSES to follow: Luv Tha Aces Lombo (claimer), The Bohemian, Ruato Bay, Windy Big, Mightbeme, Brother Of Sonoko, Big Zee, Man Of The World, Dont Wanadie, Miss Dilly, Saab Magic.

Rams on the way to wins By ADEM SARICAOGLU YEAR one of the Leigh Sporle era at Rockbank was promising, but the coach is hoping year two will be even bigger. The Rams recovered from a rough start in the Riddell District Football League this year to finish with six wins. While those six wins were only good enough for a 10thplace finish, Sporle looks back on his first year in charge of the Rams as a positive one. “It was definitely good to get the six wins, I think,” Sporle said. “Considering we started so slowly losing the first six games, to get the six wins and miss out on the finals by not a great deal was pretty pleasing. “Obviously making the finals would’ve been ideal but at the end of the day I think we had a pretty good year considering.” Numbers at pre-season training are so far looking positive down at Ian Cowie Reserve but Sporle is keen to inject a bit more experience into the side during the summer. “I think we’ve got a pretty good and even mix across the field, we probably just need to be a bit more consistent,” Sporle said. “There weren’t many occasions where we got convincingly beaten for four quarters - it might’ve been a quarter where we lapsed in concentration and might’ve lost. “To change that culture it really is just about that belief and if we can bring some players in, it’ll really bolster that and add to the list that we already have.” Sporle is keen to make a run
Jake Armistead was one of Rockbank’s better players Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT during the 2013 season. 97096 for the finals series in 2014, but he also hopes to simply put Rockbank back on the map for the first time in more than a decade. “I think we’ll surprise a few sides and I said that this year, just from being around the club in the early stages of the start of the year,” Sporle said. “We’ve got a good list, we just need a bit more support. Three or four more players and I think we’ll be right up there.” The Rams will also be looking forward to two marquee home fixtures next year, including an Anzac Day clash with
Sunbury and the annual NAIDOC game against Lancefield in round 13. Sporle hopes a bit of big game experience will come in handy if Rockbank can score a finals berth. “That’s really exciting for the club,” he said. “If we, and hopefully we will, play finals, it’ll be a good experience for the boys because they get some boutique games during the year so that by the time finals come, they’ll have had two years of playing in those types of games.”
Early losses put heat on Lions By ADEM SARICAOGLU MELTON was restricted to an even 200 runs by Altona in Sub-District Cricket on Saturday. The Lions were sent in to bat by their western rival at MacPherson Park but were able to make the most of it, reaching three figures on the scoreboard for the loss of only two wickets. An 87-run third wicket stand between opener John Varchione and Anthony Gale helped steady the ship after Michael Alexander and Stuart Wilson were both sent packing cheaply for three and four respectively. However once Gale was dismissed for 51, Melton’s flow of runs was well-stemmed by the visitor. Captain-coach Nathan Geisler could only contribute 14 before Altona star Aaron Maynard had him bowled, while soon after Jeremy Liddy became the second of Shane Jones’s three victims for the day. Jones then went on to remove Varchione, leaving Nathan Allen (21 not out) and Chris Hope (nine not out) in the middle to scrounge for the remaining 19 runs of the day. Liddy told Star his side was “reasonably happy” to end up with 200 runs for the day, before praising Varchione’s impressive 94-run dig. “At the start of the day we would’ve taken it,” Liddy said. “I suppose in the position we were in, it would’ve been nice to get 20 or 30 more runs off the last 12 to 15 overs. “But John Varchione’s (innings) is exactly what we’ve been wanting from the top five, which is someone to bat through the innings. “He did it really well and set us up for the total we got.” Liddy is confident Melton’s attack will be able to get the job done this Saturday. However the Lions will have to go into the second day without key opener James Wheelahan, who recently fractured his finger in a Twenty20 fixture. “I reckon we’ll have all bases covered,” Liddy said of the Melton attack. “I think the bowlers have been doing better than the batsmen this year, so hopefully that can continue next week.”
