IT’S already that time of the year - wow how time flies! And what better place to be to celebrate Christmas cheer than in the Yarra Valley? Catching up with friends, going out with colleagues and bringing the whole family together can be tough gigs over Christmas. Luckily the Yarra Valley is stuffed full of choice when it comes to the quality of food and the type of venues available for the silly season’s celebrations. From catching up for a Christmas breakfast, brunching at a bakehouse and winding down at a winery, there’s plenty to see and do rather than having cheap and nasty finger foods in a dark, crowded room. Big events such as Christmas work parties often involve an events co-ordinator who will sit down and look at the number of people, appropriate venues, and what can be done within a set budget. Many of the valley’s larger wineries can cater for big parties, as well as sporting clubs and community halls. Smaller groups can take advantage of the nice weather and reserve outdoor tables or even picnic in some of the family friendly parks and playgrounds, while letting children run free. Getting closer to the Christmas season often means meals can vary slightly with a choice of the restaurant’s usual quality menu or special Christmas feasts - set menus, buffets and even a selection of holiday puddings and pies. For a picnic, head down to one of the valley’s markets to pick up some fresh local produce and take it along with a

Whatever Christmas get-together is being organised, a nice setting and good food can make that special day relaxing and enjoyable. But Christmas isn’t only about partying, what about all the bits and pieces needed for the special celebration.

We’re proudly local and believe in shopping local - for everything Christmas related whether it’s Christmas hams, locally made cheeses or stocking fillers - the Yarra Valley is the place to be. Merry Christmas from everyone at the Mail.

Time to join postal run to Santa’s workshop

1110198-PB49-13

AS THE countdown to Christmas draws near, children across the hills are putting pen to paper to write their wish-list letters to Santa Claus. Receiving more than 150,000 letters to Santa last year, which all received personal replies, the Australia Post is gearing up for another big year. Australia Post’s executive general manager retail services, Christine Corbett, said like previous years, Australia Post

oolangi avern

is expecting a huge number of letters to be sent to Santa in the lead-up to Christmas. “Nothing compares to the excitement of a child when they receive a reply from Santa and we love being a part of that connection,” she said. “Christmas is our busiest time and Australia Post is committed to ensuring that all letters and deliveries make it to their destination.” All wish-lists should be sent

to Santa, North Pole, 9999. Ms Corbett said Santa and his helpers are already getting very busy. “So the sooner you send your letter ahead of Christmas, the sooner Santa can respond,” she said. For some letter-writing tips, Christmas education resources, activities and interactive games, visits the Australia Post’s Santa Mail website at www.auspost. com.au/education/santamail.

Big night for festivities By JESSE GRAHAM THE streets of Healesville are set to be filled with Christmas festivities as the annual Community Christmas Festival comes around again. The main street area from Green Street to Church Street will be closed off for the festival, which will run from 4-7pm on Friday 20 December. A huge range of activities will be available for children at the event, with facepainting, pony rides, clowns, balloonists, a jumping castle and even a visit from the man himself - Santa Claus. To add to the festive atmosphere and to cater for last-minute shoppers, a number of traders in Healesville’s main shopping strip will be opening their doors later for the festival’s visitors. Last year’s event drew a large number of community members to the festival, with the main street packed until the festival wound up. Healesville Chamber of Commerce member and organiser of the Christmas festival Lisa Hennessy said that this year’s festival has been six months in the making. “It’s a really important event,” she said. Healesville Chamber of Commerce president Graham Taylor said the event will be a great time for kids who would have finished up their school year and would be eagerly anticipating Christmas. “It’s all about family entertainment, the community coming together and just celebrating the joy of Christmas,” he said. “There will be an afternoon of events leading into a great night of last-minute shopping. “The event has grown so much over the years and is now a significant part of our

Sanctuary of songs to sound By JESSE GRAHAM THE songs of Christmas will be sung among the leafy confines of Healesville Sanctuary in a Carols by Candlelight event this year, with hundreds expected to attend. Last year’s carols event drew 1125 people to the Healesville Sanctuary, packing the venue to near capacity, and this year’s event will be the second

time the venue has hosted the event. This year’s event will be held from 6pm-10pm on Saturday 14 December and is organised by the Healesville Lions Club. Healesville Lions Club president Paul Walker said the event is great for the community. “It’s one of those great family nights that allow a lot of the commu-

nity to come together,” he said. The carols event will have free family and children’s activities, including a jumping castle, clown show, facepainting and even visits from furry or feathered friends from the sanctuary. Santa Claus will be making an appearance at the event and a combined community choir will be singing classic Christmas songs from around 8pm for visitors to enjoy.

Healesville Sanctuary director Glen Holland said the event is a way for the sanctuary to thank the Healesville community for its support over the year. “We attracted a great crowd last year and hope to grow on that this year,” he said. “We’re adding some unique animal experiences to the mix this year and we really hope our neighbours will join us

to celebrate the festive season.” Candles and glow-sticks will be on sale for visitors to use during the event and CFA members will be assisting with lighting and bringing Santa in to the event. In the event of extreme weather or heavy rain, the Carols by Candlelight event will be cancelled. Entry to the Carols by Candlelight is free.

Santa’s sack is full again A SPECIAL guest returning to visit the public in the lead-up to Christmas after almost five years is just one example of how Marysville is embracing the festive spirit. Santa Claus himself has returned to the area for a chat and a photo opportunity for the first time since the Black Saturday bushfires, paying visit to Maryton Park Bed and Breakfast each Saturday. Santa and his helpers will be available at the venue for photographs on Saturday 7 and 14 December from 2-4pm for a chat with children about his upcoming Christmas shift and even has some time for a happy snap. Co-owner of Maryton Park Penni Thompson said that there hadn’t been an opportunity for a photo with Santa since before the bushfires. “I thought it would be a great idea to have Santa here for the children again,” she said. “It’s fantastic and the kids love it. I think it’s important to bring the magic to the children.”

For those after a community event in the lead up to the big day, the Anglican Parish of Marysville and Buxton will be hosting a carols service on Sunday 15 December from 7pm-9pm. The Alexandra Brass Band will be coming to perform on the night and preschool children from the area will perform a nativity play and children’s carols. Val Cockerell from the Anglican parish said there will also be a treasure hunt for children on the night. She said the carols event is an opportunity for community members to gather and embrace the festive spirit. “It’s a good opportunity to get a lot of people together to sign a few Christmas hymns and remind them that Christmas is really not just about presents,” Ms Cockerell said. Visiting Santa at Maryton Park costs $15 per child. For more information, call 5963 3242 or visit 36 Maryton Lane, Marysville. For more information on the carols event, call Val Cockerell on 5963 4592.

Home away from home for gifts that delight By KATH GANNAWAY JUST like Santa’s little elves, many of the Warburton Valley’s most talented and creative artisans have been beavering away in their workshops in anticipation of Warburton Homemade’s Christmas Night Market. More than 300 people turned out for the inaugural market last year and it is expected to be just as popular this year. Warburton Homemade is a treasure trove of unique hand-crafted items from toys and jewellery to clothing, books by local authors and illustrators, cards, home decor... and much, much more. The emphasis is on quality and design. The range is an eclectic reflection of the talents of the community and a great place to buy gifts that support the ‘shop local’ edict and return 100 per cent of the profit to the maker. The Christmas Night Market, from 6pm to 8.30pm on Friday 6 December, is an extra special night to meet the local artists and makers of Warburton Handmade in the shop, gallery and at the outdoor market and find the special things that aren’t available in the big chain stores down the line. There will be a door prize, community garden raffle draw and delicious local produce to sample. So, instead of the mad Christmas rush, set aside some time on Friday night to enjoy the Warburton vibe while ticking off the Christmas gift list this year. And, if you can’t make it to the market, Warburton Handmade is open every day.

Carnival brings it all together AMONG a huge line-up of local talent, organisers of the 2013 Warby Xmas Carnival have managed to attract a big-name international headliner for the event. Father Christmas (AKA Santa) (not to be confused with Santha who is also on the bill) will be centre stage at the Water Wheel at 6pm as part of the four-hour community carnival on Friday 20 December. Presented by the Warburton and Yarra Junction Community Bank Branches and Warburton Valley CEDA, the carnival aims to bring the whole community together to sing, dance, share a meal and do some late night shopping at Warburton’s eclectic mix of shops and businesses. The carnival starts at 5pm with Shaka Baka getting the music going and Kofi drumming at 5.30pm. Father Christmas will arrive about 6pm and there are sure to be some very happy faces when the Christmas raffle is drawn at 6.30pm. Join Santha’s Big Sing at 7pm and then sit back and be inspired by the amazing talent of the Warburton Valley’s young performers in the Young Talent Show. Along with the live music there will be face painting and a jumping castle for the kids, a barbecue and other community fun activities.

Lights in focus By REBECCA BILLS FOR 24 years Steven and Karen Cornish’s house in Vista Drive, Chirnside Park, has been a focal point for Christmas light onlookers. Mr Cornish said the couple start putting the lights and decorations up before the Melbourne Cup weekend because it usually takes them four or five weeks to put it all together. “We have a few things that other people don’t have like a spinning Christmas tree, a snowman and a ferris wheel that we have made alongside a train on the front veranda,” he said. “Every year it’s a bit different with new features in the ferris wheel and different colours. “You buy various things and you modify them to make them suit.” Mrs Cornish said her electrician

husband loves putting the lights up and uses it as an end of the year outlet. “He loves doing it and it brings a lot of enjoyment to kids and adults who come and look,” she said. “We have thousands of people drive past here and the CFA guys bring Santa every Friday and Saturday night. “We collect donation for the CFA so it goes to a good cause.” Mr Cornish said the lights would be on display until late December. Other great local spots to visit for great Christmas lights are Lakeview Drive in Lilydale and Tombolo Court in Mooroolbark. Visitors are also reminded not to forget to wave to Mr and Mrs Clause as they drive up Hereford Road in Mount Evelyn.

Crowd ready for carols of Christmas By JESSE GRAHAM

Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce’s Bill Verhagen and Alex Lagerwey, along with Heartland Church Pastor Mike Baimbridge are all excited for the upcoming carols Picture: DONNA OATES in Yarra Glen. 111302

HUNDREDS of Yarra Glen community members are expected to flock to McKenzie Reserve next weekend for the town’s annual Christmas carols. The carols event, which will kick off at 6pm in the park next to Bell Street, will feature a number of performers taking on the classic songs of Christmas. A band from Ringwood’s Empower Church will be making its third appearance at the annual event, which is being organised by Heartland Church pastor Mike Baimbridge and Jenny Bourke. Mr Baimbridge said he’s hoping that residents and members of the community will come down to the reserve for the carols, which has seen between 700 and 800 people in attendance each year. “It’s just a fantastic opportunity

to come together as a community and to share Christmas celebrations together,” he said. The event, which is organised with Chaplaincy Australia, will see a number of local performers take the stage on the night, including the Yarra Glen Primary School Choir, Yarra Glen residents Connie Anderson and Robyn Wilson, among many others. He said that the carols’ location in McKenzie Reserve offers a natural amphitheatre and an atmosphere that helps to improve the carols as a whole. Mr Baimbridge said that he first became involved with the Yarra Glen carols by playing drums in one of the live bands and that he’s been on the organising committee since about 2006. Yarra Ranges Council’s Youth Services team will also be coming down to the carols and providing

inflatables, games and slushie machines for visitors and children to enjoy on the evening. A sausage sizzle will be held at the event, before the carols get fully up-and-running at 7.30pm. Mr Baimbridge said the evening will wind up about 9.30pm. He said that the carols have seen a dramatic increase in interest from the community over recent years, which he hopes will continue with the 2013 event. “The awareness and the acceptance of the carols have been tremendous,” Mr Baimbridge said. The Yarra Glen Carols will be held in McKenzie Reserve on Bell Street, Yarra Glen, from 6pm until 9.30pm on Sunday 15 December. The event will be called off if heavy rainfall persists on the day. For more information, contact Mike Baimbridge on 0408 143 969.

Striking a chord with Warburton Carols By Candlelight, from left, organising team members Brian Halit, Jim van Zanten, Andy Bennett, Jenny van Zanten, Julie Bell, Jeff Gill and Mick McIvor. 111310 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY

MICK McIvor says “we didn’t set out to make a big event”. But, really, there’s no need to apologise! With between 3500 and 4000 people attending last year, Warburton Carols by Candlelight is the biggest, free entertainment event in the Yarra Valley - and one of the most anticipated. “We just set out to do carols and do it well,” said musician Mick who is creative director for the event which is hosted by River Valley Church and Warburton Advancement League and brings together communities all along the Warburton Highway. The event this year is on Saturday 21 December. Pre-carol activities including a visit by Santa, start at 7pm with the carols program including local musicians and singers and guest acts from at home, and “abroad”, starting at 8.15pm. The line-up for this year is, as Mick says, “a doozie”. The April Maze, having just arrived back in Australia after a very

successful northern hemisphere tour, will be on stage, along with The Burney Girls - Paige and Lucy who hail from Millgrove, and others. There will be lots of opportunities to sing along, and dance too, with the guest acts doing their thing then leading into a carol. Take along a picnic dinner, or take the night off and enjoy an a la carte meal from one of the food stalls. Be prepared - no matter what the day-time temperature - it can get chilly by the river in Warburton. River Valley Church pastor Andy Bennett said the event was not only well supported by the local communities who come together to celebrate Christmas, but by groups such as the Yarra Junction Opportunity Shop, POWA Productions and CBM Australia, who sponsor the event, with local businesses who have traditionally made significant contributions also. Sweet taste of pudding success THERE’S nothing quite like unwrapping a traditional, cloth boiled Christmas pudding - but how to do it? Seville Community House has dedicated Sunday 8 December to Christmas cooking and will give visitors the opportunity to spend four hours learning the secrets of success to making this delicious, authentic pudding from an experienced cook. And visitors get to take their pudding home - yum! While the pudding cooks, the trainees get to mix up a batch of gingerbread and some mince tarts to nibble on while sharing a chatty, fun afternoon with friends... and perhaps make some new friends! The pudding is enough for 10 to 12 people and there is also a gluten free version available. The session includes all the ingredients so it’s great value at $65 for the session.

Another little bit of Christmas cheer the community house is offering is a Soy Candle and Glycerine Soap Making workshop on Saturday 7 December. Learn how to make hand-crafted gifts for family and friends that are natural and naturally beautiful. Why not do the workshop with a friend, daughter, sister, or your mum. It could even be an early Christmas gift that will create memories as well as some very special gifts. To find out more, or to book a place, phone the Seville Community House on 5964 3987 or email to sevcomh@bigpond.net.au. client vulnerability and the role and responsibilities of night security. Sgt Wilkinson told the Mail on Monday that he had submitted the reports in response to a request by the council to identify some public concerns. “It’s not my capacity to make comment in respect of whether it (Narconon) should or shouldn’t be relocated. “I have raised some areas for discussion that could be of concern in respect to public safety,” he said. “I remain impartial on this matter, and take the view it’s for the governing bodies to make an assessment in respect of the application.” Narconon spokesperson Dr Nerida James said her organisation would be happy to speak with Sgt Wilkinson to discuss safety and security measures that it has taken and to get his input and resolve any questions to his satisfaction. “In a very recent phone conversation the sergeant said he was unaware that we had hired a professional security team, employed seven days a week,” she said. She said she did not think it was appropriate to comment any further until they had met with Sgt Wilkinson. “We are doing everything possible in this regard,” she said. Mr Jackson said his group was also frustrated that they had not heard as of Monday afternoon as to whether the matter would go to council on 10 December. “This recommendation is coming at the earliest one week and one day beforehand,” he said which could affect people’s ability to respond effectively.

POLICE have raised concerns over student management and behaviour at the Narconon facility in East Warburton. Their concerns have come to light after a Freedom of Information request from opposition group SayNoNarconon that revealed a submission from Warburton police to Yarra Ranges Council. In a second submission to the council’s planning department regarding the controversial proposal to move Narconon drug rehabilitation facility from East Warburton to Warburton township, the officer in charge at Warburton police station, Sergeant Tom Wilkinson, commented on information prepared by town planners Millar Merrigan which he said was helpful in providing an overview but raised some concerns. “I was concerned that some material regarding student management and behaviour was not consistent with information held within my professional capacity,” Sgt Wilkinson wrote in the submission dated 4 November. He continued that while he was subject to privacy rules, information could be sought by anyone through a formal FOI request to Victoria Police. SayNoNarconon members say they believe the information Sgt Wilkinson alluded to should be available to the public. Spokesperson Paul Jackson called on the council to make an FOI application, which the council has declined to do.

“I think that with a matter as important as this the council should be seeking every avenue of information to ensure that they are making informed decisions,” he said. “We are disappointed that they appear to not want to do that.” Yarra Ranges Director of Planning, Building and Health Andrew Paxton however had advised the Mail that the planning process does not allow the council to pursue information through an FOI application, but said residents are entitled to submit their own if they wish. “Any issues highlighted by objectors that have not been addressed properly by the applicant will be addressed through the decision making process,” he said. Mr Jackson confirmed that SayNoNarconon had made an application but said it could be 45 days before they have the information they are seeking and as of Monday afternoon had no information as to whether the matter would go before the council meeting of 10 December. In his initial report, dated 29 August, Sgt Wilkinson said the increase in clients from 30 to 80 presented a number of new challenges and concerns with respect to client management and potential risks to the community, which he said were not discussed in the application and were needed for an assessment. He said areas that needed further discussion included client freedom within the facility, behavioural issues, new risks associated with the venue type, location and client security management,

but added that flyers, including political advertising, was among the material found. She said at this point police were not investigating the matter in terms of identity theft. The incident however echoes another mail delivery incident in October last year when bundles of Yarra Ranges Council election mail, again addressed to Launching Place residents, were found discarded in a rubbish bin in Gruyere. An Australia Post spokesperson has told the Mail they have investigated any possible link and can confirm that the incidents are completely unrelated.

A SUB-CONTRACTOR working for an Australia Post authorised contractor has been charged with theft after police found more than 1000 items of undelivered mail in his possession. The letters, addressed to Launching Place residents, contained cheques, VicRoads registration documents, invitations, gift cards, bank statements and other items. Leading Senior Constable Georgie Cooper from Lilydale Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) said police, acting on information from the public, obtained a search warrant which led to the arrest. THE death of Coldstream teenager Josh Matthews has devastated family and friends across Yarra Ranges. The 17-year-old, described as genuine and inspirational beyond his years, died of a suspected asthma attack on Wednesday morning. He was at Phillip Island with a number of friends when he died. Heartfelt and heart-breaking messages of grief, paying tribute to a talented and loved young man, and offering condolences to those close to him, flooded Facebook tribute pages reflecting his character and the impact he had made as a person who never took life for granted. Known to family and friends as ‘Turbo’, Josh was a co-school captain at Lilydale Heights Secondary College where he completed his VCE this year, and a member of Coldstream Football Club. His father Roger said he received the shocking news early on Wednesday morning and is devastated. The family were among hundreds of family and friends who gathered at Lillydale Lake on Thursday to pay tribute and release balloons in his memory. President of Coldstream Football Club Paul Harper described Josh as a natural leader who was a hard worker and dedicated to the club. “He was just genuine, he said. “My nine-year-old son just adored him ... everyone did. Mr Harper said when the club was going through rough times recently Josh was the first one to put his hand up and was inspirational not only to

the other players, but to everyone at the club as they looked at rebuilding. “With Turbo, it was just ‘I can’t wait to get started’; he had a great capacity enjoying being part of something, and that was infectious, he said. Lilydale Heights Secondary College principal Greg Hancock said Josh had led the college with real distinction. He was a champion of the student voice and had led the school and his house in swimming and athletics. “I lost count of the number of medals I have presented to him, Mr Hancock said. He said Josh had a great personality, was a happy teenager who was focused on being healthy, behaving responsibly and was a great role model. “Because he touched every year level in his leaderships through the SRC and as school captain, putting our breakfast club in place, for example, he touched the lives of so many. It’s a great sadness for every student, teacher and staff member, he said. Roger Matthews said while he and his wife Emily were proud of all Josh’s accomplishments, it was who he was as a person that made them really proud. He said Josh said that he took on board the lessons he learned and grew, adapted and matured. “Through the process of Josh being Josh, those achievements came, he said. A funeral service will be held for Josh on Wednesday, 4 December at 10.30am, at Discovery Church, 89 Monbulk Road, Mount Evelyn.

NEXT year will mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of World War I. We will be commemorating this significant event in our Nation’s history with many special activities to highlight the meaning, effect and relevance of this conflict for Australia and Australians - past and present. In addition to national activities, our Federal Government is encouraging local communities to organise commemorative events with a local focus to highlight the involvement, service and sacrifice of our first Anzacs. The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program will provide funding of up to $125,000 to each federal electorate to assist local communities with appropriate projects and

events to mark this important historical milestone. Projects that may be eligible for funding under this program include: public commemorative events, including the commemoration of important military anniversaries, enlistments and other World War I events that have had a significant local impact; new World War I memorials or honour boards; the restoration of existing World War I memorials or honour boards; the preservation, interpretation and display of World War I memorabilia and artefacts; and appropriate school projects such as research and preparation of material and documentaries examining the social and other commu-

nity impacts of World War I. To help assess project proposals for the electorate of Casey, I’ve enlisted the support of some outstanding local residents to form an Anzac Centenary Local Grants committee that broadly reflects and represents our local community. Chaired by Monbulk Primary School Principal Ray Yates, members of the committee include Brigadier (retired) Michael Phelps AM, Graham Warren, Anthony McAleer, Margi Sank, Bob Gannaway, Sue Thompson, Chris Thomas, and John Shackleton. The youngest member, Blake Hadlow, is a 21-year-old Mount Evelyn resident who has a strong interest in Australian military history. The committee has invited applications from eligible local groups

and associations such as ex-service and community groups, schools and other educational institutions, museums and cultural institutions, local government and non-for-profit organisations. The grants are not available to individual applicants. The Anzac Centenary Local Grants program provides an excellent opportunity for residents of the Outer East and Yarra Valley to recognise and show their gratitude for the courage, sacrifice and commitment of our local soldiers, sailors and airmen, and also those who “kept the home fires burning. Several project proposals have already been received. Grant applications will remain open until 30 May 2014, however, eligible and interested groups are encouraged to lodge their applications as soon as possible. An application form is available on my website – www.tonysmithmp.com. Completed applications should be forwarded to my office at PO Box 40, Chirnside Park, Vic., 3116.

Museum plan gets nod By JESSE GRAHAM

By JESSE GRAHAM ANTI-LOGGING nannas have walked free from court without a conviction, following a hearing last week at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court. Three members of the Knitting Nannas of Toolangi (KNOT) fronted the court on Thursday 28 November to answer trespass charges against them from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI). The charges relate to an incident on 19 September 2012, where eight members of the group entered a logging coupe to protest and stopped forestry workers for around two hours. Magistrate Peter Stewart Dunn ruled that the members of the group could have their charges withdrawn under a diversion program. Each member of the group would have to pay a landcare group $50 to fulfil the terms of the diversion program and no charges would be put on any of their criminal records. The diversion was agreed to by both KNOT members and DEPI. Magistrate Dunn said that it was a privilege for the members to be put on the diversion program, but said the right of protest was important. He paraphrased the Edmund Burke quote that said “all that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing” to emphasise his point, but said laws were there for a reason. “It’s the individual’s right to protest, but there are appropriate ways of doing things,” he said. The magistrate dismissed an application from DEPI for the KNOT members to pay for the costs of serving summons, which could have been delivered by mail rather than in person. A representative for KNOT said they were pleased with the result of the hearing and the terms of the diversion. “We have not been found guilty and there is no offence listed,” they said. “Long live Toolangi forests!” The other five members of the group are set for a separate hearing on 12 December.

YARRA Junction’s Upper Yarra Museum has been put on the path for redevelopment, after council endorsed a master plan for the site’s future. The Yarra Junction Community and Cultural Precinct Master Plan was endorsed unanimously by the Yarra Ranges Council at its 26 November meeting. The master plan was developed in partnership with the Upper Yarra Valley Historical Society (UYVHS) and Hansen Partnership and explores improvements to the site around the historical museum and the Yarra Centre. Public consultation around the master plan was held, with over 50 responses overall to the plan - council reported that the feedback was positive and indicated strong support for the development. The plan proposes and prioritises developments to the site and its links with the town and the Rail Trail over the coming years. Some of the proposals in the plan include the restoration and reinstatement of buildings on the site, which include the Goods Shed and the Porters Cottage; upgrades to the area for children’s play, events and museum displays; introduction of a café and gathering space in the museum precinct and working with the museum to reduce the size of the displayed collection by rotating pieces on display. UYVHS president Tom O’Meara spoke in support of the plan at the council meeting, and said it would help to make the Upper Yarra area’s history more accessible for all ages. “It will help us to increase our profile and the development of the precinct as a community hub,” he said. O’Shannassy Ward Councillor Jim Child said the development of the Upper Yarra Museum site in recent years had been amazing and that the master plan would only help that development. “It’s a wonderful document that will take us into the future with this site,” he said. “It complements the Rail Trail, which is one of the best assets we’ve got, and to have it complemented with this master plan and with this site, the only way we can go is forward.” To view the full master plan, visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

CHAOS erupted in the Victorian Parliament last week, as the push for Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe to become Speaker flared up before being dismissed for the year. On Tuesday 26 November, members in the Lower House shouted over the top of each other during question time as part of a Labor push to challenge the position of current Speaker, Ken Smith. Monbulk MP James Merlino said the majority of Parliament, including Frankston MP Geoff Shaw, does not support the current Speaker and that Labor would support Ms Fyffe to ascend from her position as Deputy Speaker. “The Opposition has made it clear that we would support, in his place, the election of the Deputy Speaker as the Speaker of this parliament,” Mr Merlino said. However, the push to change Speakers was quashed for the year after Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allen and Mr Merlino, both Labor MPs, were suspended from Parliament for the next six sittings. As a result, the members will not be able to take part in Parliamentary votes until February, with Liberal Party commanding an absolute majority in the Lower House. A representative for Ms Fyffe said that, even if Mr Smith was challenged as the Speaker, Ms Fyffe would not be guaranteed to replace him and that the matter would go to a vote. The representative said that,

Never a good time IN RESPONSE to Marie Campitelli (All In The Timing, Mail Opinion 26 November). Unfortunately there has never been a good time to talk about Child Safety at St Brigids. I started in this arena not because of my son’s abuse and not because of my vision impairment, but because the hierarchy of the church saw fit to load St Brigids Healesville up with a second abusive priest with a penchant for little boys. I have tried to dialogue with all levels of the church from parish priest to office of the Holy See only to be ignored. We tried to get a parish meeting together but were told if we wanted to hold it on church property we were not to talk about anything in the past and we could have a healing mass. Things have changed, now I see children on public transport singing songs about deviant priests. With a state inquiry and a Royal Commission, children are exposed to the truth of it all on the headlines of papers every day and a good thing I think. Like Marie I was a bit horrified at the timing of the articles (Mail, 19 November) but maybe it was meant to be if it helps promote child safety that’s great; if it promotes discussion in families even better. Ian Lawther, Healesville.

Join petition AS a member of the committee headed by emeritus professor Barbara Van Ernst that was advising David Ensor (about Swinburne’s Lilydale campus) I can attest to the fact that the Yarra Ranges Council was very careful to allow the research to find alternative providers to proceed openly. Despite the potential for a conflict of interest, the council applied no pressure at all on this work. The council has played an important role in the fight to save the site and was instrumental in setting up the Yarra Valley Educational Precinct Committee to lobby for ongoing educational provision on the site. If the site is to be used for education again the land has to be acquired from Swinburne. Either the government of the day has to ac-

quire it using consolidated revenue or funds have to be obtained from elsewhere. Alternative providers must be prepared to step in soon. It is unlikely that there will be any students on the site in 2014 and unless action is taken soon, there will be none in 2015 either. It is time to act. Readers are urged to sign the on-line petition set up by the Yarra Valley Educational Precinct Committee. Please join this campaign: http:// chn.ge/1cIHW1H. Bernard Dobson, Convenor, Yarra Valley Educational Precinct Committee, Healesville.

Impressed by paramedics PEOPLE talk about the ambulance service - here is my experience with paramedics, in particular a man named Shane and his partner. Shane had attended to my husband Les about seven times in the last five years. They were always here in minutes. Their kindness was exceptional, particularly when Les died at home. I felt like I had two sons looking after me. This, I will never forget. Margaret Pattie, Healesville.

Thanks and congratulations ON BEHALF of Cancer Council Victoria, I congratulate and thank those who helped make the Yarra Ranges Relay for Life a successful event. In November, more than 600 local residents came together to participate in the overnight relay-style event celebrating cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost and encouraging the community to fight back against cancer. Relay for Life is a global event strongly embraced by communities all over Victoria. The event challenges teams to take turns to keep a baton moving all night in a relay-style walk or run. I am constantly inspired by Relay for Life participants and volunteers, and their dedication to the cause. Although the statistics are confronting - one in two people will be diagnosed by age 85, there is reason to celebrate. Over the past two decades the survival rates

for many common cancers has increased by more than 30 per cent. This is largely thanks to research and prevention measures funded by Victorians through programs such as Relay for Life. This year, Yarra Ranges participants are expecting to raise $80,000 which will support Cancer Council Victoria’s research and prevention programs, as well as support services for local residents specifically, the Cancer Council Helpline. Yarra Ranges residents can call the helpline on 13 11 20 and discuss cancer-related questions with a registered cancer nurse. Finally, I would like to personally thank each of the volunteer committee members, led by chairmanager Prue Northey, for volunteering their time and energy to ensure the event’s success. We would not be able to make such great inroads without the dedication, commitment and support of our donors and volunteers. Todd Harper, Chief Executive Officer, Cancer Council Victoria.

Road repair rage IT’S really good to see how the Yarra Ranges Council can work so well with VicRoads regarding road repairs at Coldstream (Council Settles Asphalt, 19 November). It’s a shame the same thing doesn’t happen on the north east side of the Yarra River. We have been waiting over two years for Ryans Road, Healesville, to be fixed up properly. They did a very temporary repair when the Victorian Bike Ride came through Healesville a few months back and that lasted all of two weeks and is now breaking up in many parts. Do we we have to live on the other side of the Yarra River to receive the same treatment? John Rosser, Healesville.

Pain is evident IT has been my privilege to be a member of the Yarra Glen and Healesville Catholic Church in recent years. There is no doubt that terrible damage has been wrought upon this community and in particular some who have suffered greatly. This pain is evident and cannot, and has not,

been silenced. Yes “policies” and regulations have been put in place to keep our children safe, but we are still profoundly wounded. It is hard to say this publicly but we are deeply sorry, hurt and also angry. With the passage of time, however, comes the hope that flows from our love of the head of the Christian Church, Jesus Christ. We pray that our hope and faith grow and with that an outpouring of love and compassion. Elissa Roper, Yarra Glen.

Parishioner says sorry IT IS tragic that in our local parish evil monsters, dressed as priests, abused children, robbing them of their innocence and changing their lives forever. All under a blanket of secrecy. I was there when voices were raised to seek justice for abused children and watched as Pam (Krstic), ‘Lisa’ and Ian (Lawther) protested, wrote submissions, visited victims, tirelessly giving of themselves. I knew of the closed doors and contempt from those who wanted only “cover up and secrecy”. I witnessed the cost to their health. I felt their heartbreak and pain. I want to say “sorry” to all those abused and to Pam, ‘Lisa’ and Ian - I did not speak out more when I should have. And, thank you, all, such heroic people. PS: The State Government inquiry and release of its findings in Betrayal of Trust is validation of what took place in our parish and of the need for change. (It happened Australia-wide, and indeed world-wide). Archbishop Hart in responding to the inquiry findings has acknowledged both the need of change and a desire of healing for those abused and their families. We at a local parish level can begin this journey towards reconciliation and healing by creating a safe and welcoming place - to listen to each others’ voices and to dialogue, and together with Pam, ‘Lisa’ and Ian, should they want, provide ongoing education and awareness-raising to ensure future safety and protection of all children. That, indeed, is hope for the future. Marie Jeffcott, Healesville.

Plan ‘oversights’ slammed By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges Council has put its voice in on the future of the region and slammed “gross oversights” in its submission to the Plan Melbourne strategy. The submission to the strategy, which guides the development of Melbourne and its surrounds for the coming 40 years, emphasises a need for a response to housing, employment transport and the environment. The council approved a draft sub-

mission to the strategy in its 26 November meeting, which addresses oversights and potential problems for the Yarra Ranges area in the plan. One of the major concerns illustrated by the council in its submission is that the Cave Hill development in Lilydale, which is set to deliver more than 4000 homes, was not mentioned. “It is surprising that one of the largest rail-based urban renewal projects to be developed in Melbourne is not even mentioned,” the draft reads. “Given that the redevelopment of

this major redevelopment site ‘ticks all the boxes’ in terms of delivering Plan Melbourne, omission of the Cave Hill project is considered to be a gross oversight.” The submission to Plan Melbourne also addresses a lack of clear direction on the future of “peri-urban” areas, which are the non-urban areas surrounding Melbourne that have green wedge land. The current approach to the peri-urban areas was described by the council as being “potentially confusing” and

generating contradictory messages for townships with green wedge and urban growth boundary areas. “Council seeks further clarity on how the Metropolitan Planning Authority in consultation with council will determine a permanent urban boundary around metropolitan Merlbourne that also includes the various green wedge townships.” Another important issue addressed was transport for employment, with council submitting that increased connectivity to areas such as Monash

should be encouraged. Lyster Ward councillor Samantha Dunn added to the draft at the council meeting, suggesting a SmartBus route to help connect Yarra Ranges residents to employment areas. The SmartBus suggestion, which could be investigated for its feasibility accompanies the suggestion for a light rail route from Nunawading’s upgraded station. For the full draft submission, visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

Child car lock cases increase By REBECCA BILLS and JESSE GRAHAM OVER the past year 1100 children have been locked in cars throughout Victoria - an increase of almost 200 on the previous year. Of those, five were reported in Lilydale, with one each in Yarra Junction, Healesville, Badger Creek, Yarra Glen and Hoddles Creek. The expected coming hot summer has prompted a warning from paramedics and police. Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Chris Hickey said that there are many calls to triple zero for children or animals locked in cars, which results in ambulance, police and CFA members being called out. “A child locked in a car is a highpriority job and it can tighten resources,” he said. “It is extremely dangerous and foolish to leave any living thing in a car, even for two minutes.

1098663-KC49-13

“Apart from the excessive heat, cars can and do catch fire and get stolen.” Ambulance Victoria group manager Brett Drummond warned that leaving children in a car could prove deadly with cases of children dying in hot cars in recent years. “Babies and young children can’t regulate their body temperature like adults can, so being left in a hot car can quickly become life threatening,” he said. Mr Drummond said it does not have to be a hot day for the car to quickly heat up. “Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that even on a 29-degree day the inside of a car can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and 60 degrees within 20 minutes,” he said.“Leaving them in the car is just not acceptable.” A report released by Ambulance Victoria said most incidents were reported between November 2012 and

March 2013 - the hottest months of the year. From the months of December 2012 and March 2013 an average of five calls were made to triple zero a day reporting someone locked in a car. The figures revealed that 46 per cent of calls involving children under the age of 13 occurred between 11am and 3pm with more than two thirds of incidents taking place in a car park, public road or public place. A further 21 per cent of instances occurred at home. Incidents in which keys were locked in the car with the child were also common and Mr Drummond said parents need to be aware of the possibility. “About 21 per cent of cases occurred outside a house,” he said. “We urge parents to be mindful and keep the keys in their hand while they are getting children and shopping in and out of the car.”

Light on Jewish holiday By KATH GANNAWAY AS THE only Jewish preschooler in the Upper Yarra, Zoe Moria has something special to share with her playmates at the UYCH Children’s Centre kindergarten. Zoe’s mum, Shlomit, is working with the staff and children as they learn about and celebrate Hanukkah. The Jewish holiday is observed for eight days and nights, commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the lights following the Jewish victory over oppressors in 165 BC. UYCH kinder assistant Jade

She introduced Hannakah to the centre when her son Dean attended and says Zoe is enjoying the same positive experience. “It makes Zoe feel so proud. “She knows it (Christmas) is something we don’t really do, but with this she feels special, and not left out,” she said. “We are happy to celebrate the Christian holidays and people are happy to celebrate Hannakah with us as well,” she said. Last year the children helped friends decorate their Christmas tree. “I am happy for them to experience all that’s out there for them,” she said.

Muratore said the children have learnt a lot from activities with Shlomit and from other resources such as the Sesame Street programs dedicated to Hannakah with stories and songs. Sentimental Bloke still going strong By KATH GANNAWAY A TOOLANGI tongue-twister and a poem that brought the Songs of a Sentimental Bloke in to the politically correct language of the modern day were among poems received from around Australia for the 2013 C J Dennis Poetry Competition. The competition winners were announced as part of the Toolangi Poetry Festival held at Arden - The Singing Gardens of C J Dennis in Toolangi on 26 and 27 October. C J Dennis Society patron, legendary Northern Territory story-teller and singer Ted Egan was a special guest at the presentation, reading some of the winning poems. Paying tribute to the society organisers he said they were doing a great service in keeping the poetry of Dennis alive. “He is one of few Australian poets who can put the adjective ‘unique’ in front of his name,” he said. Students squeeze in challenge YELLINGBO student Morgan Bazzocco and friend Brooke Smith from Silvan aren’t afraid of a bit of hard work to fulfil their goal of visiting Vietnam and Cambodia next year as part of World Challenge. The girls, 15, and students at Lilydale High School, have been doing the rounds of the hectic schedule of festivals around the Yarra Valley to raise the more than $6000 they will need to take part in what they see as the adventure of a lifetime. The girl squeezed what must have seemed like a lifetime of lemons for their lemonade stall at the recent Yellingbo Festival at Camelot

Castle, and were also at the Lilydale Show. “We both want to experience other cultures and see the how other people live, as well as wanting to do something to help in those countries,” Morgan said. Forty young people from years 9 and 10 at Lilydale High will be taking part in the trip which includes working at one of the local schools. Morgan said they will be continuing their fund-raising for another year with the trip planned for November 2014. “I’m very excited about going and we’re both really looking forward to getting over there and helping out,” she said.

The judges told Leonardo that his poem was of a very high quality and would certainly have been in the very top, but was, sadly, the only entry in the Poems by Students in Secondary School. Festival organiser Jan Williams said there were 126 poems entered this year. “I am filled with awe and gratitude that so many fantastic poems arrive on my desk,” she said.

Crime trends mixed tale By JESSE GRAHAM CRIME rates for domestic violence have risen in the Yarra Ranges according to the latest statistics from Victoria Police, though total crime numbers continue to drop. The latest statistics were released on Wednesday 27 November and compare crime rates in the 12 months leading up to 30 September 2013 with the

12 months leading to 30 September 2012. In the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area (PSA), family violence rates rose from 313 offences to 370 offences between the two periods, with general assault rates rising by 18 per cent. Robbery rates fell by 38.6 per cent, with 27 offences compared to 44 reported incidents in the year prior.

However, Yarra Ranges Inspector Paul Rosenblum said a number of school burglaries have been concerning. “Police are currently working with the Education Department and other stakeholders to combat this spike,” he said. Insp Rosenblum said that Yarra Ranges Police Officers would continue to make headway on reducing fam-

ily violence and attributed the rise in numbers of offences to increased confidence for victims to come forward. “A divisional family violence unit has been implemented and is currently operating across the PSA,” he said. “This unit will be a great asset providing expertise, guidance and confidence in targeting this issue. “Improved confidence is already

apparent through the increased reporting of incidents of family violence and increased referral of people in need to support agencies.” Overall, total crime across the Yarra Ranges dropped by 1.8 per cent, while crime across Victoria rose by 4.3 per cent. It’s time to graze By JESSE GRAHAM

AN ICONIC community event with years of history will be returning in February, with grapes being grazed and the wines and produce of the Yarra Valley stepping into the spotlight. The Grape Grazing Festival will return to the valley for the first time since 2008, in a refreshed, reinvigorated and refurbished state. Over 50 events will be held as part of the festival, which saw over 20,000 visitors to the Yarra Valley over its running in 2008. Kicking off on Valentine’s Day and finishing on Sunday 16 February, there will be a number of signature events as part of the Grape Grazing Festival. On Saturday 15 November, a Big Breakfast will be held in Healesville, where part of the main street will be closed and visitors will be able to be seated at a table on the road and enjoy local produce. Big and small wine producers, restaurants, breweries and food producers will get a slice of the limelight, with cider and beer bars

set up in various venues. The event, which began in 1988, was put on semi-retirement following the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. Alex White, who was part of the original steering committee for the festival, said there was excitement among the wine community for the festival’s return. Grape Grazing committee member Richard Howden agreed with Mr White and said the reinvigorated format of the festival would appeal to all age groups. “There is a real sense of excitement in the region,” he said. The Yarra Valley currently hosts 146 wineries and 180 wine brands, with over 3000 hectares of the valley used for vineyards. There will be a number of specially-ticketed events as part of the festival, and 30 events that can be accessed by purchasing a Grape Grazing Weekend Pass for $25. For more information on the festival, visit www.grapegrazing. com.au

Revved up motorcyclists protest against government’s bikie laws FRUSTRATED motorcycle riders took to the roads on Sunday to protest against the idea of Victoria following in Queensland’s footsteps with anti-bikie laws and the stigma attached to their lifestyle. But Seymour MP Cindy McLeish said that recreational riders would not be in the crosshairs of any bikie laws. About a dozen motorcyclists departed from Healesville as part of a 1000-strong riding group that converged on Parliament House in Melbourne. The Freedom Ride was

held to protest the proposal for Victoria to introduce antibikie legislation similar to Queensland’s, which Healesville motorcyclist Heather Ellis said would add further stigma to riders. “I have ridden motorcycles for over 40 years, but increasingly, I’ve witnessed a growing lack of respect from car drivers who either fail to look for me or treat me like a queue jumper as I filter through traffic,” she said. “I ask the Victorian Government to please stop the criminals, whether they ride motorcycles or not - but use existing police powers.

Ms Ellis is also a member of the Victorian Government’s Motorcycle Advisory Group and the Independent Riders’ Group. The Queensland laws remove the onus from police to prove an outlaw motorcycle gang is a criminal organisation to the courts - a system which Victoria still has. Ms Ellis said that similar laws were ready to be tabled in the Victorian Parliament. Ms McLeish said she had not seen the legislation Ms Ellis mentioned, but that any laws would be targeted only at outlaw motorcycle gangs. “The level of crime these

outlaw groups have become involved with is escalating rapidly and needs to be tackled,” she said. “But they’re not targeted at a person who goes out on a weekend for a joy-ride on their bike, whether it’s a triumph or a Harley, to enjoy themselves. “Laws encourage all riders to ride safely and enjoy their ride, but in the knowledge that the law is definitely not targeting them.” Ms McLeish said she would be happy to listen to any community members’ concerned about motorcycle laws.

Richard Howden, Behn Payten and Leanne DeBortoli are excited about the Grape Grazing Festival’s return. 111349 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM

Numbers tell depressing tale OPINION

By ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER ROBERT HILL

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill. The lessons learned in implementing a successful alcohol impaired driving program are now being applied to combat the drug impaired driving issue, however Operation RAID results show there is still more work to be done in this area. And it needs to start now. We need to change the culture where drivers believe it is okay to drive with any form of impairment. Whilst drink driving remains one of the biggest threats on our roads, we recognise drug driving is a significant issue and needs to be a major focus for Victoria Police and our road safety partners. That is why Victoria Police has made a commitment to expanding our drug testing capabilities and strengthening our drink driving en-

forcement capabilities. We have improved our intelligence processes to ensure we will have police focused on the right areas at the right times to remove those drivers who create the biggest risk on Victorian roads. We are listening to the community and working with our road safety partners to introduce new legislation targeting impaired drivers. Our goal is to influence and change the culture of road users to create a safer road system for all Victorians. We know we are heading in the right direction; the current road toll is testament to that. However we are determined not to become complacent and are committed to our vision of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

1108227-KC49-13

ONE in 11! What does that figure mean to you? To police working Operation RAID earlier this month it was a figure that astounded them. We told drivers we would be out there conducting drug and alcohol testing across the state. It was on the news, it was in the papers! But we still managed to detect one in 11 motorists who tested positive to driving with illicit drugs in their system. That figure is nearly double the yearly average of detections! Drug driving is a significant issue which appears to be increasing across Victoria and we need to intervene now. We know impaired drivers are a major contributor to road trauma and have been engaged in a battle to remove them from our roads since motor vehicles first became an integral part of society. In 1909 we saw the first legislation enacted relating to alcohol impaired driving, with drug driving being addressed with legislation in 1949. In 1970, deaths on Victorian roads peaked at 1061. This resulted in a number of legislative changes which contributed to the steady decline in road deaths over the following years. These included the introduction of seat belts laws, a maximum highway speed limit of 100 km/h and the introduction of compulsory blood sample analysis for persons injured in collisions. But the introduction of random screening of drivers for alcohol in 1976 was a milestone in terms of impaired driving enforcement and the reduction of alcohol involvement in road trauma. In the 1970s road deaths in Victoria involving drivers with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of higher then 0.05 per cent accounted for 49 per cent of all road deaths. As a consequence of these findings random breath testing (RBT) legislation was introduced with the objective of identifying, prosecuting and removing as many alcohol affected drivers from the roads as possible. From 1976 to 1982, tens of thousands of drivers were screened for alcohol, resulting in the percentage of drivers and riders killed with a BAC of higher then 0.05 per cent falling to 37 per cent. In 1983 the process was enhanced by the use of electronic screening technology and the introduction of booze buses. Alcohol screening increased dramatically and by 1984 the percentage of drivers and riders killed with a BAC over 0.05 per cent had decreased to 33 per cent. In 1990 high volume, highly visible driver alcohol screening using large purpose built vehicles

commenced. This was accompanied by an intense public advertising campaign using television, radio, print media and static bill boards. The results of the new enforcement campaign were dramatic with the percentage of drivers and riders killed with a BAC in excess of 0.05 per cent reduced to 30 per cent in 1990, falling to a low of 21 per cent in 1992. After the success of the alcohol impaired driver enforcement program, Victoria Police looked at other causes of driver impairment which represented a risk to road safety. Victoria Police recognised that driver impairment could result from a number of factors, including alcohol consumption, drug ingestion, injury, infirmity, fatigue, age or a combination of these and as a result legislation was introduced in December 2000 addressing impaired driving generally. The legislation provides for identification of impaired drivers so that appropriate action can be taken. If the cause of impairment is the recreational misuse of drugs, a driver is prosecuted for driving while impaired by a drug. If the impairment relates to other factors, the driver is dealt with by a driver licence suitability program. In either case the driver is removed from the road until the reason for their impairment is addressed. December 2004 saw the introduction of legislation prohibiting the driving of motor vehicles with any level of the illicit drugs speed and cannabis present. September 2006 saw the inclusion of ecstasy in the list of prohibited drugs. Police were also given the authority to conduct roadside drug tests by saliva sample screening. Victoria Police conduct around 3.5 to 4 million alcohol screening tests a year and 42,000 roadside drug tests. In Victoria in 2012 one in 20 drivers were confirmed to have one or more of the illicit drugs present whilst driving and one in 238 drivers were found to driving with a BAC in excess of the prescribed amount. In 2005 drugs of all types were present in almost 40 per cent of drivers killed on Victorian roads, with illicit drugs present in 24.4 per cent of drivers. By 2009 the presence of all drugs had decreased to almost 32 per cent and the presence of illicit drugs had dropped to 15 per cent. Disturbingly, the presence of drugs of all types in Victorian drivers killed in 2010 and 2011 increased dramatically, returning to the levels seen in 2005.

If you speed, if you drink or take drugs then drive, if you drive unlicensed or an unregistered car, the party’s over.

Weekend for decade of art A WEEKEND of events will be held this week to celebrate a decade of art in the community and the latest works at Healesville’s TarraWarra Museum of Art (TWMA). The TWMA Open Weekend will be held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December, celebrating the gallery’s 10th year of running. As part of the open weekend, entry to the museum will be free to the public and a number of events will be held both in and out of the gallery. From 11am-5pm each day, visitors can walk upon a specially-laid trail that discusses the indigenous and European history of the area on the way up to the gallery.

Pop-up Art Talks will be held from noon to 4pm on selected works by renowned artist Russell Drysdale, which currently adorn the walls of the gallery. Jess the Wedge-tailed Eagle will be visiting the gallery between noon and 12.30pm on both days, weather permitting, for a special show. Jess’s appearance is inspired by the indigenous-themed Future Memorials exhibition, which focus on Coranderrk, indigenous heritage and William Barak and features materials from the area. Cricket clinics, inspired by Drysdale’s famous work The Cricketers, will be held from 11am to 1pm all weekend on

the green hills around the gallery, with coaches from the Healesville Cricket Club giving pointers to players. Sausage sizzles will be manned by members of the Yarra Glen and District Men’s Shed, raising money for the group, while food and wine will be available from the gallery. On Sunday 8 December, a children’s workshop will be held on making sculptures, led by artist Sarah Mezner. The cost of the sculpture workshop is $20 per child, or $18 for members. All the events, with the exception of the sculpture workshop, are free. To book for the workshop, or for more information, visit www.twma.com.au.

Graze the headline acts up close AUSSIE rock will be at centre stage early next year, with an allstar line-up visiting Healesville for a night of good music, good times and ... grapes. Jimmy Barnes will headline a special A Day on the Green concert at Healesville’s Rochford Winery on Saturday 15 February as part of the Yarra Valley Grape Grazing Festival. Accompanying him to the stage will be the Baby Animals, Daryl Braithwaite and John Stevens and the Dead Daisies. Barnes is no stranger to the sight of Healesville’s vineyards, performing at A Day on the

Green both with Cold Chisel and as a solo performer. He said that he’s always had an “absolute blast” performing as part of the winery tours in the past. “It’s a fantastic way to enjoy music - sitting back with your friends in a great location,” he said. “There’s always a good feeling across the whole day, which makes it a pleasure to play.” The performance will be one of the most notable events as part of the Grape Grazing Festival, which will run from 14-16 February 2014.

Tickets to the Jimmy Barnes A Day on the Green concert are on sale now and range from $89.90 plus booking fee for general admission, up to $149 plus booking fee for platinum packages. Visitors to A Day on the Green concerts are asked to bring a chair or picnic rug and are able to bring picnic supplies, though the event strictly does not allow outside alcohol. For more information, visit www.adayonthegreen.com.au, www.rochfordwines.com.au, or call 5962 2119.

Cuba calling for new year AN EXOTIC start to the new year filled with Cuban jazz is on the cards for those attending Club Cuba New Year’s Eve Festival among Rochford Winery’s vineyards later this month. The Club Cuba event will be held at the Healesville venue from 6pm on 31 December through to 1am on 1 January, with a range of performers keeping crowds entertained and helping to ring in the new year. The Robbie Williams Show will headline the festival and will be followed by Louie and the Party Boys, who will help to finish the evening on the main stage. A house remix tent will feature percussion, bongos, sax and singers alongside DJs who will play throughout the event, providing a unique experience to finish off the year.

There will be three stages in total at the Club Cuba event, with vineyard floor shows, samasita dancers, dance lessons and commercial house music to accompany the Cuban and Latin sounds filling the night air. A laser show will be held as 2013 draws to a close and the new year begins. Entrance to the Club Cuba New Year’s Eve Festival costs $65, or $135 for the Club Cuba

Spit Pig Ticket, which includes a two-course meal and a glass of sparkling wine in the restaurant. Visitors are allowed to bring their own picnic, though there is strictly no BYO to the event. For more information, or to book tickets to the New Year’s Eve event, call 5962 2119 or visit www.rochfordwines.com. au. WARBURTON musician Santha Press wants people from all around the Yarra Ranges to make 2014 the year would-be singers come out of the shower. As co-ordinator for the VoiceMob Project, Ms Press says the project that will ultimately bring together hundreds of people to sing in performances across Yarra Ranges Shire, is for everyone who ever wanted to sing out loud. For those ‘shower’ vocalists, VoiceMob will be a chance to shine. Before all that happens, however, Ms Press is gathering a core team to work with project director Nick Pappas and a deaf performing artist to shape the performance. “There is a strong emphasis on access and inclusion and in this first stage we are looking for singing leaders and signing leaders; so people with an interest in music and people who have ability to sign with Auslan (the sign language of the Australian deaf community),” Ms Press said. Anyone who would like to be part of the leadership team should contact Ms Press immediately because there are just a couple of places left, and the team will be put together very soon. Everyone else should keep an eye out for information about the 34 February workshops that will be held across the shire in all sorts of venues from community houses and libraries to schools. The workshops will give people the opportunity to learn

Bowlers are on the ball TRADITIONAL two day cricket returned to the Yarra Valley in Round Seven action in DJ Strachan Shield. The battle of discipline and patience were on show in all four games as the teams threatened to break their games open in ideal batting conditions. However the perseverance of the bowlers ensured the scores were kept in check. There will be quite a few batsmen around the valley having nightmares this week thinking about their missed opportunities to score big. The game of the round was at Healesville, where the second placed Bloods hosted Coldstream. Healesville won the toss and elected to bat and captain Geoff Stock lead from the front against the inform Crocs opening bowlers Mathew Stark and Jarrod Bayliss. Coldstream made early inroads, but Stock held firm continuing his great form scoring 43. His wicket left the door ajar for the Crocs, but a solid 35 from all-rounder Brian Scanlon through the middle order and a hard hitting 37 not out from Ash Hamer ensured the scoreboard continued to tick over. Eventually the visitors wore the Bloods down and they dismissed the home side for 186. The pace trio of Matt Jonson (3/24), Stark (3/41) and Bayliss (2/39) would be well pleased with their day’s effort. The game sits well in the balance. The Coldstream bats have the talent but need to improve dramatically on the previous performances while Healesville has a rounded attack that will challenge the batsmen. Woori Yallock hosted Seville in a key clash for these sides and its ambitions to be inside the top four at the Christmas break. Seville opened up the batting and the experienced Andy Kay provided the backbone to the innings. But he was disappointed in not taking advantage of the start losing his wicket on 50. Adam Burns ensured the Blues’ score continued to tick over with his second decent score in as many games as he too posted a half century. Again, he was unable to capitalise on his start and missed an opportunity to really turn the screws on the home side. Tiger’s captain Daniel Mock put his keys in the bowl as he is proving to be an expert swinger. Mock has taken wickets in every game this season as his swinging medium pacers are proving difficult for the batsman to handle. His figures of 4/53 kept things in check for the home side and with the assistance of Simon Young’s 2/28 they bowled the Blues out for 206. With batsmen of the quality of Mock, Young and Ryan Smith, the Tigers are well in the hunt, but they will need to do it against the competition’s best attack. Mount Evelyn, at home to Hoddles Creek, needed to atone for its collapse against Coldstream and captain Kane Jones gave them the perfect opportunity by winning the toss and electing to bat. The Rovers’ top order came to play and kept the score ticking while facing some consistent bowling. The big issue for the home side was none of the batsman were able to capitalise on their starts. Brad Jones (48), Gareth Fraser (55), Kane Jones (40) and Troy Hancock (48)

all looked at decent scores but got out when in a position to punish the Wombats. Eventually the home side circumbed to the patience of the visitors to be all out for 271 with 15 overs in the bank. Workhorse Nick Bark was well rewarded for his tireless spell capturing 6/83 in the face of some brutal batting. He was well supported by David Chesney (2/42) who chimed in with two crucial wickets. The score looks like a monumental chase for Hoddles Creek but on the lightning quick and small Mount Evelyn Reserve, if its batsmen can get in they have a chance of giving it a shake. In the final game of the round, Warburton-Millgrove travelled to Yarra Junction in a bid to keep itself at arms distance inside the top four. Yarra Junction batted first and showed true grit against a consistent Burras attack. Yarra Junction has been known to fold under continual pressure but this was not to be as the experienced Paul Osbourne (44), Daniel Lever (41) and Dan Robertson (35) ensured the Eagles were up for the fight. Unfortunately with neither of these bats going on to post big scores the home team could not quite put the visitors away with a commanding total finishing on 6/183. Old timer Adam Humphrey relished his return to the top grade leading the young Burras attack taking 3/46. With the Yarra Junction oval being lush a total of 183 could prove tough to chase for the visitors however with many talented batsmen the chase could go down to the wire with plenty at stake for the winners. Spur for future bowling By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE Bowling Club’s Corporate Bowls Challenge looks like becoming a regular part of the town’s business and sporting calendar after a second successful series. The Black Spur Café team was awarded the perpetual trophy as winners of the Spring competition which saw 22 local businesses taking to the greens for six weeks each Wednesday evening. Team captain Cindy Bell said she and her team-mates Ben O’Meara and Kathy Maddigan were thrilled to win. “We’ve had so much fun, we’ll definitely be doing it again,” she said. Competition organiser Charles Hort said the series had been a win/win bringing local business people together and good for the club with the com-

munity involvement playing a role in securing $100,000 State Government and Yarra Ranges Council funding for new synthetic greens. “The participation of so many local people, and local businesses, was a significant contributor when they asked us ‘what are you doing for your local community?’ as part of the application,” he said. Mr Hort said there were a number of ways people could enjoy bowling, and being part of the Healesville club, without becoming involved at competition level. The club will run another corporate bowls competition from 5 February to 12 March 2014 with a number of teams already signed up. Any businesses or organisations that would like to take part can phone the club on 5962 4984.

THE sun made an appearance following weeks of inclement weather to showcase the new track and field venue in the Yarra Valley for athletics. The Yarra Ranges team of volunteers were up at the crack of dawn on Sunday to ensure all final preparations were attended to for a successful EMR Region Relay Championships held at the Morrison Reserve venue. It did not take long for all Eastern Region Centres to have their gazebos set up and for the first race to take place. Yarra Ranges Under 11 4x200 metre mixed team got the show moving sensationally with a gold performance in the first race of the day. The under 15/16 mixed team finished the day winning gold making it three from three events, the 4x200 metre, medley and 4x100 metre. Their effort and determination was something for the younger athletes to aspire to. There were a number of other outstanding performances with medals to the Under 9 Girls, Under Nine Mixed, Under 12 Girls, Under 12 Boys, Under 9 to 11 Girls, Under 12 to 13 Girls, Under 14 to 16 Girls, Under 14 to 16 Boys, Under 15 to 16 Mixed. All the young athletes put in a fantastic effort after several months of training to run as fast as possible and for smooth baton changes. Special mention to young Jayden Clarke who donned the spikes three times to cover for missing or late athletes only to miss out on a run. Full results and state qualifiers will be available at yarrarangesathletics.org.au. A small team of athletes competed at Round Four of the AV Shield held at Lakeside Stadium last Saturday afternoon.
