A blue Christmas By REBECCA BILLS THE Christmas holiday season it is not always a happy time for all. And Tecoma Uniting Church is hosting a time of reflection and music to acknowledge any sadness or concern during the Christmas period for locals in an event called Blue Christmas. Hosting Blue Christmas gatherings since the beginning of her ministry in 1996, Reverend Di Esdensen has held the service locally for the last five years. Recently returned to the church after her own recovery from breast cancer, Rev Esdensen said Blue Christmas is about giving people some space in what is often a busy and demanding time. “It is for those who have experience some form of loss during the year or in the past,” she said. “It could be the loss of a job,

loss of a relationship, loss of health - anything that separates them from the hope that Christmas generates for most. “It is an opportunity especially for those who struggle with the expectations that we all need to be happy and connected with family and friends at Christmas,” Rev Esdensen said. “This is a place that will offer quiet, music, invitation for reflection and just a space to be. “People attend these gatherings because somewhere inside they are hurting.” Another Christmas initiative the church holds is a time to celebrate the festive season with children in an afternoon of stories, games, nativity photos and craft activities. Stories like ‘Granny goes to Bethlehem’ by Kathy Westone and ‘E-mail: Jesus@Bethlehem’ by Hilary Robinson are some of the more humorous stories that are set to be read
to explore the Christmas story. Rev Esdensen said the importance of the event is to share the meaning of Christmas in a noncommercial sense. “This is our way to share with children the story that has given rise to the holiday and celebration that we have,” she said. “It is a story we value and want to share freely with the children of our neighbourhood and their families.” ‘Celebrate Christmas with Children’ is on Wednesday 11 December from 3.45pm and 5.30pm at the church. Blue Christmas gatherings will be held on Sunday 8 December and Friday 13 December at 7pm at Tecoma Uniting Church, located at 1566 Burwood Highway, Tecoma. Wire bundles of Christmas fun MONBULK has joined in the season’s merriness by adorning the streets in Christmas cheer with an extra unique decoration. A giant Christmas tree of wire bundles has been built in the Monbulk roundabout by disciplinecrossing creative and visionary Joost Bakker. President of the Monbulk Business Network John Coleman said Mr Bakker was asked to do the project by the association and he agreed and carried out the work free of charge. “He and his assistant worked late into the night last Thursday through the continuous rain in order to have it completed in time for the Merry Monbulk Christmas Late Night Shopping event,” Mr Coleman said. Mr Bakker is a fifth-generation tulip farmer and has created installations that fuse nature with raw, industrial sensibility that in the process encourage discussion about sustainable design practices. Mr Coleman said the tree has attracted a great deal of interest on social media. “In just two days the Monbulk Business Network Facebook page had over 2500 views and this is still growing,” he said. “The majority of people love it with a few who do not and some who cannot make up their mind. “They see it as the modern artwork that it is. “One saw it as hair curlers an-
other as pasta pieces and one saw it as hard rubbish collection.” Mr Coleman said no matter what the viewpoint, the fact that people are talking about it means that they are talking about Monbulk. To celebrate the Christmas season in Monbulk the annual Merry Monbulk Christmas event took place last Friday and attracted hundreds of people to the town with schools singing carols and a team from the Monbulk Aquatic Centre performing yoga and Zumba demonstrations. Mr Coleman said the event was a huge success with the children in particular loving the animal nursery, face painting and stilt walker that were there. “It was a great night and the shops had great success which is what it is all about.”

HUSBAND and wife duo Phil and Fiona Spencer are opening their home for the third annual Miniature Village and Christmas Display. The display will help raise much-needed funds for the Macclesfield CFA brigade where Phil serves as Second Lieutenant. Fiona said this year’s display was sure to impress visitors. “We started planning and preparing for this year’s display just three days after last year’s display closed,” she said. “We make most of the displays ourselves so that is why it is such a long process. “This year we also have a shop area selling some wonderful gift ideas.” The couple’s Christmas display commenced in 2011 from their personal collection of decorations and has grown into an attraction to help raise money towards buying a new community-owned tanker for the station. Phil said Macclesfield was a small community with a limited number of people living there making it difficult to keep fundraising. “We go out in strike teams and help out other stations so we too need good equipment,” he said. “We are working towards replacing the community owned
tanker which requires $330,000. “The display is just one way to bring people into the area and donate towards us reaching our goal.” Last year just under 1000 people come through to visit Macclesfield and tour the display. Phil said the Macclesfield CFA was around a third of the way to their target amount for the new tanker. “It is still going to take a few years for us to get there but we are committed to a few more displays yet,” he said. “This is one of the few fundraisers that we hold at our house to raise money for the Macclesfield Volunteer Fire Brigade.” According to Fiona, there is something for everyone at the display with Santa’s workshop, a nativity scene and Santa’s mail box and a new HO train layout to name a few. “The detail in these displays is something you have to see to believe,” she said. “Adults love the details and kids love the magic of it all. Entry is $5 with children aged under seven years just a gold coin donation. The Miniature Village and Christmas Display is located at 515 Macclesfield Road, Macclesfield. Lights in focus By REBECCA BILLS FOR 24 years Steven and Karen Cornish’s house in Vista Drive, Chirnside Park, has been a focal point for Christmas light onlookers. Mr Cornish said the couple start putting the lights and decorations up before the Melbourne Cup weekend because it usually takes them four or five weeks to put it all together. “We have a few things that other people don’t have like a spinning Christmas tree, a snowman and a ferris wheel that we have made alongside a train
on the front veranda,” he said. “Every year it’s a bit different with new features in the ferris wheel and different colours. “You buy various things and you modify them to make them suit.” Mrs Cornish said her electrician husband loves putting the lights up and uses it as an end of the year outlet. “He loves doing it and it brings a lot of enjoyment to kids and adults who come and look,” she said. “We have thousands of people drive past here and the CFA
guys bring Santa every Friday and Saturday night. “We collect donation for the CFA so it goes to a good cause.” Mr Cornish said the lights will be on display until late December. Other great local spots to visit for great Christmas lights are Lakeview Drive in Lilydale and Tombolo Court in Mooroolbark. Visitors are also reminded not to forget to wave to Mr and Mrs Clause as they drive up Hereford Road in Mount Evelyn.

CAROLS on the Mountain is returning for its eighth year of Christmas entertainment at the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve. First staged in 2005, the popular event is crossing its fingers and toes that bad weather stays away so the event does not have to be cancelled like last year. Sassafras-Ferny Creek Fire Brigade Captain John Schauble said the event celebrates Christmas and community in the hills. “It’s a great opportunity to come together and reflect on the year past and the new one to come,” he said. “It’s also a chance for us to thank the community for their support over the year.” Performers at the event will include Tecoma Sing Australia, Southern Voices, Richard Wilson, choirs from the Sassafras and Ferny Creek Primary Schools and the Upwey High School Concert Band. Being so close to Christmas, Santa is scheduled to make an appearance too. Hosted at the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve on Saturday 14 December, entry is a gold coin donation with parking available in the nearby Ferny Creek Horticultural Society. The event is strictly alcohol free with a sausage sizzle, soft drinks, glow sticks and carol booklets available for purchase on the night as well as a range of activities for both children and adults.

Hosting headline act Michael Paynter to lead the Christmas cheer at the free event Creative Pastor at Discovery Church Greg Attwells said this is the first Discovery carols that he will be overseeing. Push for pool By MELISSA MEEHAN A PUBLIC meeting to save the Olinda Pool will be held this Thursday. Organiser John Faull said he had received a lot of support from residents and visitors to save the pool after the Mail broke the story on 19 November. Yarra Ranges Council confirmed its plans to close the pool permanently citing irreparable cracks in the pool, as well as a low attendance rate. But Mr Faull said that he had received lots of support from the community to want to fight and challenge the council’s decision with common sense. “The whole plan to shut it down is just ludicrous,” he said. “Why close something the community wants?” He said that the people of Olinda felt as though they were being ignored by those in the council offices at Lilydale. “We get nothing for our rates,” he said. “The majority of our roads are dirt roads that get graded once in a while. “Why shouldn’t the people of this area be allowed to keep their pool?” Mr Faull also asked why, if the pool wasn’t that important to the town, that the council and CFA were looking for another static water base in case of a bushfire. “This pool was built with the community and fire fighting in mind,” he said. “We are going to fight it and save the pool.” The public meeting will be held on Thursday at the Olinda CFA station from 7pm onwards. Council cross over fake graves By MELISSA MEEHAN AS THE sun rose over Emerald on Monday morning, crosses marked the would-be gravesites of the removed trees at Worrell Reserve. Mystery surrounds where the crosses came from or who put them there, but those in town had no problem understanding their purpose. One community member noted that she believed that the
crosses may have been a memorial to the death of free speech and accountability, others said it could have been a memorial to the removed trees. Cardinia Shire Council’s general manager of Corporate Services Derek Madden said a number of gum trees were planted without council authorisation at Emerald’s Worrell Reserve on Sunday. “These trees were planted in the area from which Monterey
cypress trees were recently removed, in order to prepare the site to become a Neighbourhood Safer Place-Place of Last Resport (NSP-PLR),” Mr Madden said. “Timber structures resembling Christian crosses were also placed next to the gum trees.” The council swiftly removed the gum trees and timber crosses on Monday morning. “Gum trees are not a suitable
species for a potential NSP-PLR. “Also, as council has widely communicated previously, the ground in the area needs to rejuvenate until autumn next year, when trees from a more fire-resistant species will be planted there,” he said. The CFA will soon undertake a radiant heat assessment of the potential NSP-PLR’s at Cockatoo Sports Complex and Worrell Recreation Reserve.

Burglar y ring bust By MELISSA MEEHAN FIVE people have been charged over the burglary of iPads and other computers at more than 60 schools in the Yarra Ranges, Knox, Maroondah, and Whitehorse areas. Lilydale CIU Detective Senior Constable Rod Newberry said police had been investigating the theft of over 270 iPads and computers since July. He said that a 30-year-old man
from Rowville was picked up by uniform police at a school in Croydon and interviewed before police issued five warrants in Rowville, Mooroolbark, Lilydale and Vermont. Det Sen Const Newberry said once the man from Rowville was interviewed by police they were able to check his phone records and associates which led police to a storage facility where police were able to recover 53 stolen computers.
“We picked him up and were able to get a little bit of information from him,” Det Sen Const Newberry said. “But after that, we were able to go through his phone records, and most of his calls were to the other four that we charged. “But that’s not all, investigations are ongoing.” The 30-year-old Rowville man was charged with possession of stolen goods and other drug offences.
Briefly Car search finds break-in tools
Three men from Mooroolbark including a 26-year-old, 27-year-old and 29-year-old, were charged with burglary. A 21-year-old man was charged with burglary and handling stolen goods. A 27-year-old female from Rowville is still assisting police with their inquiries. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
MONBULK police are celebrating after catching two would-be crooks in the act. Sergeant Mark Knight said two of his officers noticed a parked car in Olinda Creek Road not long before 8pm on Tuesday 26 November. Sgt Knight said that tools to break into a house including a machete, knife, and a hockey stick, torches, balaclavas, gloves and headlamps were found. Two men in their 40s from Emerald and Avonsleigh were charged with a number of offences including equipped to steal, threats to kill, possessing a prohibited weapon and non-related offences. They will appear at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a layer date.

BELGRAVE firefighters have a brand spanking new tanker with all the latest technology - just in time for the fire season. Captain Phil Keep said the tanker is the newest one in the Ranges Group and can carry up to 25,050 litres of water. “It replaced our 18-year-old tanker which was a bloody good truck,” Mr Keep said. “It fought fires back to 1997.” The new truck has a front hose and two pumps that allow for high pressure hoses and the normal firefighting hoses. “You don’t get one of these too often,” he said. “We’ve trained up the whole team on how to use it, and it’s great.”
POLICE are investigating the circumstances of a fatal crash that claimed the life of a Ferntree Gully motorcyclist at Eildon on Friday. Emergency services were called to EildonJamieson Road where it is believed the rider lost control of his bike on a left-hand bend around 1.30pm. The 2009 Suzuki then left the road and travelled down an embankment near the EildonWarburton Road intersection. The man, aged in his 40s, died at the scene.

We will be commemorating this significant event in our Nation’s history with many special activities to highlight the meaning, effect and relevance of this conflict for Australia and Australians - past and present. In addition to national activities, our Federal Government is encouraging local communities to organise commemorative events with a local focus to highlight the involvement, service and sacrifice of our first Anzacs. The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program will provide funding of up to $125,000 to each federal electorate to assist local communities with appropriate projects and
events to mark this important historical milestone. Projects that may be eligible for funding under this program include: public commemorative events, including the commemoration of important military anniversaries, enlistments and other World War I events that have had a significant local impact; new World War I memorials or honour boards; the restoration of existing World War I memorials or honour boards; the preservation, interpretation and display of World War I memorabilia and artefacts; and appropriate school projects such as research and preparation of material and documentaries examining the social and other commu-

To help assess project proposals for the electorate of Casey, I’ve enlisted the support of some outstanding local residents to form an Anzac Centenary Local Grants committee that broadly reflects and represents our local community. Chaired by Monbulk Primary School Principal Ray Yates, members of the committee include Brigadier (retired) Michael Phelps AM, Graham Warren, Anthony McAleer, Margi Sank, Bob Gannaway, Sue Thompson, Chris Thomas, and John Shackleton. The youngest member, Blake Hadlow, is a 21-year-old Mount Evelyn resident who has a strong interest in Australian military history. The committee has invited applications from eligible local groups

and associations such as ex-service and community groups, schools and other educational institutions, museums and cultural institutions, local government and non-for-profit organisations. The grants are not available to individual applicants. The Anzac Centenary Local Grants program provides an excellent opportunity for residents of the Outer East and Yarra Valley to recognise and show their gratitude for the courage, sacrifice and commitment of our local soldiers, sailors and airmen, and also those who “kept the home fires burning”. Several project proposals have already been received. New fire refuge goes on show FERNY CREEK’S fire refuge was officially opened last weekend at the local primary school. Attended by many in the community as well as local fire brigade members, the community had been waiting for the opening. Sassafras Ferny Creek Fire Brigade Captain John Schauble was on hand to explain how the refuge was run and to answer any questions residents had.
Community fire refuges can provide shelter as a last resort for people whose other plans have failed and are located so they are not exposed to high temperatures and are ember proof. Organisers say that a community fire refuge, like a Neighbourhood Safer Place, is a place of last resort and is not a substitute for having a well thought out and practiced personal survival plan.

Ghost restaurant moves By JESSE GRAHAM AN AMENDMENT to the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme has been adopted for a restaurant in Ferny Creek, following more than 15 years of back-andforth negotiations through the council. The Yarra Ranges Council adopted the site-specific amendment in its 26 November meeting and will submit the amendment to Planning Minister Matthew Guy for approval. The amendment for the restaurant
at 261 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Ferny Creek, was discussed for almost an hour at the meeting After intense discussion about how to minimise sound from the restaurant, which is surrounded by residential properties, the council came to a unanimous decision. The motion that passed for the restaurant featured conditions such a banning of external sound amplification equipment, including speakers and alarms; the installation of a 1.8
metre glass or Perspex screen for the terraced area to reduce sound travelling; a restriction on liquor sales to only the interior of the restaurant and the terraced area and for drainage to be addressed to reduce amenity impact on neighbours. Neighbour to the development, Margaret Jane, spoke on behalf of the objectors to the restaurant going ahead and spoke of concerns regarding lighting and sound from the restaurant. She said there had been a David
and Goliath battle over the restaurant since 1996, after the present owner purchased the property, then Arnold’s Restaurant, and applied to build a new restaurant. However a representative for the applicant said that work would be done to address all of the residents’ concerns about the restaurant, including landscaping to reduce visual impact and traffic management. “This has been a matter going on for some time,” said the representative.
“If there are any on-going misgivings about the restaurant, we would like the opportunity to understand what those issues are and to respond to you.” The restaurant, should the amendment be approved by the Planning Minister, will have a patron limit of 100. Councillor Noel Cliff said the issue of the restaurant was important for the Ferny Creek community members and that he hopes the conditions will help to put the saga to rest.
Women’s defence gets an Edge and takes a stand By REBECCA BILLS EDGE Martial Arts is taking a stand to combat violence against women. Head instructor of Edge Martial Arts in Mount Evelyn Kyoshi Andrew Roberts has joined Mount Evelyn Reformed Church Minister and committee member for the Family Violence Education Network Richard Schoenmaker in the battle to tackle the major issue. Both are supporters of White Ribbon Day, which was held early last week, and Mr Schoenmaker said the number one issue in this area is family violence. “If we didn’t have violence in this area there wouldn’t be much else wrong,” he said. “I’ve been working with White Ribbon for a number of years now and it’s been a tough one. “Violence against women is a major problem but people really

find this topic hard to talk about.” Mr Schoenmaker said the Family Violence Education Network is currently doing many things in local schools to try to tackle the issue and said having Mr Roberts come on board with his martial arts school to support White Ribbon is great. Mr Roberts said white ribbon holds a heavy meaning in martial arts in the sense of making sure people don’t abuse some of their skills. “It’s a really important organisation to get behind,” Mr Roberts said. “I have four children and they are all girls and I would hate for anything like that to happen in their families. “We have over 540 students here and if we can make all those students as well as their families aware we are reaching about 1500 people, it might even be more.”
Mr Roberts said supporting White Ribbon is not just about making men aware that violence against women is unacceptable but it is to make the whole community aware. White Ribbon is the world’s largest male-led movement to end men’s violence against women. The not-for-profit organisation uses primary prevention initiative and an annual campaign to seek to change the attitudes against women by engaging boys and men to lead social change. White Ribbon Day, which was held on 25 November, was the start of 16 Days of Activism to Stop Violence against Women which ends on Human Rights Day on 10 December. Arrest over 2011 murder POLICE have arrested and charged a man with a murder relating to the discovery of a body in Olinda in 2011. Homicide Squad detectives charged a 36-year-old man with one count of murder. A walker discovered the body covered with branches on Olinda Creek Road around 7.30pm on 19 March 2011. It is believed the body of Kyal Scanlon, 28, of Kilsyth, had been there for weeks and was deliberately covered with vegetation. Mr Scanlon, a father of five, was last seen alive at the Mooroolbark Shopping Centre on March 7. The accused will appear via video link at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 5 December.

EVERY year the Monbulk Christian Fellowship organises a children’s-family Christmas party held in the Main Shopping Centre of Monbulk. I personally have no connection with the fellowship, but must commend these people for the wonderful couple of hours of family time one can enjoy there. The event is mostly at no cost to families attending, including a visit by Santa in the Monbulk CFA truck. So much time and effort must go into this party in terms of organisational efforts. It’s lovely to see local residents, enjoying the day, chatting with other parents and neighbours and children. It forges an excellent community spirit of sharing and caring. So congratulations to the the fellowship. I must also add, our Monbulk Main Road is looking fabulous with all the flower beds in full bloom and the trees growing well, people enjoying the new seating, eating lunch or just soaking up the sun. HAVING read the CFA’s 18 June 2013 report to Cardinia Council re assessment of Worrell Reserve as a Neighbourhood Safer Place (NSP) I, too, share Mr Hellriegel’s (What’s Next for NSP?, Mail, 19 November) doubts about achievement of a NSP designation. CFA criteria states that a separation distance of at least 310 metres should exist between the boundary of a NSP set in open spaces and the fire threat. This is clearly not achievable at Worrell Reserve. In that case a fire radiant heat rating of 2 kw/ m² must be achieved. While I accept that removal of the Monterey cypress trees is likely to have significantly reduced the radiant heat factor on the northern boundary of Worrell Reserve, I doubt that it has reduced it enough. As Mr Hellriegel points out, the CFA’s rating of the eastern and southern aspects where there were no Cypress trees, are currently five and three times above the necessary rating. To date I have not witnessed any significant removal of trees or vegetation on any of the three aspects on the scale I would expect was required to attain the 2 kw/m² rating. One of the problems that I imagine confronting council is that there are many private properties close to Worrell Reserve with significant trees and vegetation that would fuel any approaching fire. As I understand it the radiant heat factor is not based on any single line of trees catching fire but on the estimated intensity of a fire front as it approaches the NSP. That, of course, would be significant with or without the Monterey cypress trees. Having removed the Monterey cypress trees to reduce the radiant heat, council has also said it will replace those trees. I would have thought those new trees, irrespective of their fire retardant qualities, would only compromise the NSP rating when they reach maturity. What then? Cut them down? I would certainly welcome some public explanation from Cardinia Council and the CFA as to exactly what further vegetation removal is required to achieve the NSP designation which the community was told would be in place for the upcoming fire season. Tree surrounds stink THERE is a somewhat persistent bad smell about the recent works which reshaped the tree surrounds in Monbulk’s Main Street. The word on the street is that the new smaller, rounder surrounds are now as originally proposed and drawn. Which implies that some considerable amount of ratepayer money was expended uselessly in building and then removing the large rectangular, ’car-catcher’ surrounds that first appeared some months ago. To take it a step further, if indeed originally the wrong build was made from the correct plans and then ’signed off’ by a council employee, this is a significant error of professionalism and judgement by people we pay. In the scale of the shire’s massive construction budget this may be a small thing but it does question process and performance. On the matter of the tree surrounds, an official response, couched in plain English rather that obfuscating engineeringese and delivered hand-on-heart, should be forthcoming in these pages. Along the lines of “yes we got it wrong and fixed it at the ratepayers’ expense, sorry” or “no, your information is wrong, the surrounds were built originally exactly as was planned and we correctly responded to something that didn’t work in practice”. This reply would be best delivered by the local councillor or the somewhat grandiosely titled Director of Environment and Engineering, either of whom is where the buck ultimately stops. Pool draws generations IT WAS with sadness that I was reading in your paper (19 November) an article regarding the imminent closure of the Olinda pool and I would like to mention that it is not just local residents that have enjoyed this facility. My family and I live in inner suburban Melbourne and the Olinda pool has become part of our summer ritual when we visit my mother who lives locally. While access to a static water source during the fire season makes sense there is another dimension to the issue surrounding this pending closure. In short, the Olinda pool offers a tranquil analogue experience in contrast to the array of digital distractions that we now embrace as characteristic of “modern” life. This pool isn’t just about water, it is about time outdoors, an icy pole from a shop that isn’t a franchise, a homemade sandwich under the shade of mature growth, clean air and in my experience a place where three generations can gather and make memories with a spectacular backdrop. I sincerely hope that John Faull finds success and the voice of ‘yes’ is louder than a economic rationalist ‘no’. Simon Drysdale, Melbourne.

Future off the rails? ALL HILLS and Yarra Valley railway commuters will be aware that currently two level crossings on the busy Box Hill-Ringwood rail corridor at Mitcham are undergoing grade separations. Some years ago the Middleborough Road level crossing at Laburnum on this corridor was eliminated when that location was grade separated. Of note, at this location sufficient provision was made for the eventual insertion of a third track. More recently, the Springvale Road level crossing at Nunawading was eliminated with a grade separation. Unfortunately, no provision was made for eventual insertion of a third track at this location. Currently the Rooks Road and Mitcham Road level crossings both at Mitcham are in the process of being eliminated with new grade separations. My recent visit to Mitcham Station revealed that again no spatial provision is being made for the insertion of a third track. Currently the Victorian State Government is spending hundreds of millions eliminating some level crossings but, is doing so focused only on the convenience of road users. Surging patronage of rail transport on the Ringwood-Box Hill corridor is such that peakhour trains ex-Belgrave are crowded to standing room only by Boronia. Belgrave trains ex Melbourne are equally crowded during the evening peak. In all probability Lilydale line trains also are crowded. So called “limited express” trains on the Lilydale and Belgrave lines (with the exception of Laburnum) stop at all stations in the 9.3km between Box Hill and Ringwood. Thus there are constricted available train pathways and unnecessary increased travel duration times. Extending triplication between Box Hill and Ringwood over these 9.3kms with a third bi- directional track would provide many more train pathways, provide reduced “limited express” transit times and would benefit all rail users. However, a full Box Hill-Ringwood triplication project, although currently needed, may well be considered a long term project. Meanwhile, the construction of road overbridges at Springvale Road, Rooks Road and Mitcham Road by providing for only two rail tracks will add significantly to the eventual cost of this triplication and thus doubtless delay further this essential track project. Future disruption to road traffic made necessary by the eventual widening of these bridges
at these three locations is assured! If the current Mitcham Road Grade Separation Project had incorporated provision for three platforms or even only three tracks, it would have made possible “limited express” trains passing “all stations” trains at Mitcham until the full triplication of the 9.3kms was provided in the future. The additional provision of facing points between the city-bound track and the centre platform at Blackburn (between Blackburn Road and the Blackburn Station) would provide an additional passing place for city-bound “limited express” trains to pass “all stations” trains at Blackburn. I have written to the project manager for the Mitcham Road Level Crossing Project expressing these concerns. To date I have yet to receive a response. Roger Willsher, The Patch.
Pool support I AM writing in support of the recent Mail cover story Back to Battle - Campaigner Returns to Save Olinda Pool (19 November). As an Olinda resident, I couldn’t agree more with this story and the points it covered in relation to our community pool. My only disappointment about the article is that it has taken a former Olinda pool campaigner to speak up and save this pool. There are so many of us here in the local community who feel the exact same frustration about our pool and its journey into a forgotten place. While I am grateful this story has been covered again, it is sad that only one voice (taken out of the woodwork) has made this article. Most residents share the same point of view about our local pool. For a facility with so much potential, it beggars belief that our local outdoor pool is closed on every single hot day in the hills - the most important days when we all want and need to use this handy facility. When my family and I first moved to Olinda, a little over a year ago, we couldn’t wait to use the Olinda pool that summer. Like most families who live in the hills, forget installing a pool in our scrubby, stone riddled, steep backyard. So, the very first chance we had, we packed our towels and a picnic, braced the heat and walked to the pool - expecting it to be literally swimming with locals who were also looking for fast and cost friendly relief from the heat. To our surprise, not to mention disappointment, when we got there the pool was closed. Assuring ourselves there had been a mistake, perhaps someone was running late to open the pool, we looked up the trading hours while we waited. To our complete astonishment, we learned that the Olinda outdoor pool is closed on total fire ban days. In other words, closed for summer. Since that day, we have not gone back. What is the point of going to an outdoor pool on a 23-degree day? Even on a sunny 28-degree day, the pool hasn’t had enough time to warm up for a dip. I imagine most people who are aware of this facility have contemplated this and stay away for the exact same reasons. These unreasonable conditions and restrictions placed on the pool make absolutely no sense to anyone at all. While every other business in the hills opens on total fire ban days, the Olinda outdoor pool remains closed. Again, it just doesn’t make sense. While Melissa Meehan (Mail editor) mentioned in her article that the Director of Environment and Engineering for the Yarra Ranges Council Mark Varmalis recommended the Olinda pool would continue to be used by the CFA for fire fighting, I just don’t see why we can’t we have it both ways? No person (local or otherwise) would ever oppose the use of the Olinda pool as a vital water source if (again, in the unlikely event) a fire broke out in the hills. Just open the damn pool. Like every other business in the hills, opening this facility on total fire ban days poses no risk to human safety. There’s more risk in driving in the heat through the bush to Monbulk on a total fire ban day to use the new indoor Aquatic Centre. Again, allow us the chance to use our outdoor community pool on days we need it most and we’ll use it. Be certain of that. Jessica Luly, Olinda.
TAFE heat IN RESPONSE to our local member’s anger at Shaun Leane MP raising the shoddy handling of the TAFE issue. I wonder if steam was coming out of her ears in the caucus when the decision was made to drastically slash TAFE funding.
Let’s not forget that this was the reason Swinburne gave for exiting the Lilydale site in the first place. Was steam coming out of her ears when the Government funded report from Box Hill TAFE was refused to be released to the community or the YVEP. The process was flawed and that is the reason this work has been halted. After the first community forum held by the YVEP the Government solution was to give Box Hill money to do a study on the educational needs of the outer east. This was never released publicly. Then on the eve of the next public forum this Government announces that they will give Yarra Ranges Council money to find the best use of this site. Interestingly enough the council had already published in their Shirewide that they thought the best use was for some TAFE courses in part of the facility some community use and for their offices to be moved to the university side of the site. This plan was overwhelmingly rejected at the last community forum. Maybe the steam coming out of Christine Fyffe’s ears should be saved for her colleagues who have gutted TAFE and bungled this process from start to finish. Peter Harris, Chirnside Park.
Call for action THE Yarra Valley Educational Precinct Committee (YVEPC) has called for politicians to take immediate action to restore funding to the Outer East Tertiary Education Strategy/Lilydale Campus Advisory Committee. This is to enable it to complete its final report on the alternative provision and future use of the Swinburne Lilydale site. The funding and research to identify alternative providers on the site has stopped while the Ombudsman investigates a potential conflict of interest. The YVEPC is of the view that the Minister of Higher Education and Skills and his Department should take responsibly directly to allow the research to continue and to allow the committee to produce its report. The work of this committee has been most worthwhile. The YVEPC is critical of politicians who continue to place party politics above the needs of the community and condemns politicians who fail to give the priority to the issue of ongoing provision of higher, vocational and community education at the Swinburne Lilydale site. A petition is being placed on Change.org to express concern on the lack of action by our politicians. The YVEPC is also looking at ways to attract some financial support for its activities. When will the penny drop MONBULK’S Christian Fellowship annual children’s festival was on Saturday 23 November, a very important town event. It was in the car park beside the police station and along the footpath on the south side of the main street. With the loss of 50 car parking spaces the street was exceptional busy with parents, grand parents kids, music, pony rides etc. Cars had to park at the Hub and the old preschool. Now, who from the council decided to pull this publicity stunt on this weekend and completely ignored the safety issues. What would have happened if a child was injured because of all the confusion. More importantly, the local shop keepers feel they are being excluded and council staff are keeping secrets. On Thursday business had a very poor day due to major dislocation of traffic and the street being full of contractors, their equipment, street blockages and reduction in car parking spaces etc. Friday was not much better and Saturday was hopeless, with concrete trucks in the street. Why was it not left to after Christmas as advertised, normally a quite period. These stuff-ups will continue, if locals are not informed. Finally, why did council staff miss the main concerns of the shopkeepers, being that the car spaces are too tight and they are losing customers. Surely the penny must of dropped with someone in council when removing two thirds of the kerb, they should have done the job properly and started again as discussed by locals. As I have said previously, the smart thing to do was to reduce the length of tree areas from 3 to 1.5 metres. Bruce Johnson, Silvan.

Crime trends mixed tale By JESSE GRAHAM CRIME rates for domestic violence have risen in the Yarra Ranges according to the latest statistics from Victoria Police, though total crime numbers continue to drop. The latest statistics were released on Wednesday 27 November and compare crime rates in the 12 months leading up to 30 September 2013 with the
12 months leading to 30 September 2012. In the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area (PSA), family violence rates rose from 313 offences to 370 offences between the two periods, with general assault rates rising by 18 per cent. Robbery rates fell by 38.6 per cent, with 27 offences compared to 44 reported incidents in the year prior.
Speaker bid on hold for Fyf fe By JESSE GRAHAM CHAOS erupted in the Victorian Parliament last week, as the push for Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe to become Speaker flared up before being dismissed for the year. On Tuesday 26 November, members in the Lower House shouted over the top of each other during question time as part of a Labor push to challenge the position of current Speaker, Ken Smith. Monbulk MP James Merlino said the majority of Parliament, including Frankston MP Geoff Shaw, does not support the current Speaker and that Labor would support Ms Fyffe to ascend from her position as deputy speaker. “The opposition has made it clear that we would support, in his place, the election of the Deputy Speaker as the Speaker of this parliament,” Mr Merlino said.
However, the push to change speakers was quashed for the year after Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan and Mr Merlino, both Labor MPs, were suspended from Parliament for the next six sittings. As a result, the members will not be able to take part in Parliamentary votes until February, with Liberal Party commanding an absolute majority in the Lower House. A representative for Ms Fyffe said that, even if Mr Smith was challenged as the Speaker, Ms Fyffe would not be guaranteed to replace him and that the matter would go to a vote. The representative said that, as a result of the efforts to challenge the Speaker, around 15 bills had been backlogged and MPs would be working to get them discussed and voted on as quickly as possible.

However, Yarra Ranges Inspector Paul Rosenblum said a number of school burglaries have been concerning. “Police are currently working with the Education Department and other stakeholders to combat this spike,” he said. Insp Rosenblum said that Yarra Ranges Police Officers would continue to make headway on reducing fam-
ily violence and attributed the rise in numbers of offences to increased confidence for victims to come forward. “A divisional family violence unit has been implemented and is currently operating across the PSA,” he said. “This unit will be a great asset providing expertise, guidance and confidence in targeting this issue. “Improved confidence is already
apparent through the increased reporting of incidents of family violence and increased referral of people in need to support agencies.” Overall, total crime across the Yarra Ranges dropped by 1.8 per cent, while crime across Victoria rose by 4.3 per cent. Time to graze By JESSE GRAHAM AN ICONIC community event with years of history will be returning in February, with grapes being grazed and the wines and produce of the Yarra Valley stepping into the spotlight. The Grape Grazing Festival will return to the valley for the first time since 2008, in a refreshed, reinvigorated and refurbished state. Over 50 events will be held as part of the festival, which saw over 20,000 visitors to the Yarra Valley over its running in 2008. Kicking off on Valentine’s Day and finishing on Sunday 16 February, there will be a number of signature events as part of the Grape Grazing Festival. On Saturday 15 November, a Big Breakfast will be held in Healesville, where part of the main street will be closed and visitors will be able to be seated at a table on the road and enjoy local produce. HUNDREDS of youngsters descended on Gembrook town centre recently for the latest instalment of one of the hills’ biggest rivalries - the kids versus Thomas the Tank Engine. A morning of grudge races pitted the iconic steam train against some of its biggest fans in a test of pure speed as the event shared the Puffing Billy station with the local Sunday market. And, as per usual, the kids came out on top. But it wasn’t those running who proved the biggest winners on the day. More than $37,000 was raised for the Paediatric Ward at Upper Ferntree Gully’s Angliss Hospital, with about 600 runners raising more than $10,000 through Everyday Hero fund-raising. Jayden Regan raised a whopping $1000 while Nicholas Cowdery raised $720. It really was all about kids running for the kids. The event, hosted by Emerald and District Rotary Club and an army of tireless volunteers is the only one of its kind in the world. It features six races for kids aged from just three right up to 12.

Treasure trove with train setting shines By REBECCA BILLS TRASH2TREASURE market is the newest local market in a unique setting at the Lilydale train station. Event organiser Natalie DeMarco said the idea behind having the market at the Lilydale station was to enable people to leave their cars at home and just jump on a train. “It’s good for the environment and we are supporting Save the Children Australia which is also really great,” she said. “We have a variety of stalls from new to second hand, and we just ask for a gold coin donation when visitors enter.
“There are also pony rides, face painters and loads of entertainment for kids.” Mother of one, Ms DeMarco said she was very conscious of making a market that was family friendly and not boring for children. “I’ve taken my daughter to many markets before and after an hour or so, they just get so bored,” she said. “My aim is also to get a bouncy castle when we expand to make it a fun experience for everyone.” Ms DeMarco said her father back in England used to run car boot sales and that she had been selling bric-a-brac
since she was a seven-yearold. She said in the future she was looking at setting up more markets at train stations along the Lilydale line to create a real market day feel along the train tracks. “At the moment, it’s just about getting the word out that we are running every single Sunday at the Lilydale train station car park,” Ms DeMarco said. AN EXOTIC start to the new year filled with Cuban jazz is on the cards for those attending Club Cuba New Year’s Eve Festival among Rochford Winery’s vineyards later this month. The Club Cuba event will be held at the Healesville venue from 6pm on 31 December through to 1am on 1 January, with a range of performers keeping crowds entertained and helping to ring in the new year. Bowlers are on the ball TRADITIONAL two day cricket returned to the Yarra Valley in Round Seven action in DJ Strachan Shield. The battle of discipline and patience were on show in all four games as the teams threatened to break their games open in ideal batting conditions. However the perseverance of the bowlers ensured the scores were kept in check. There will be quite a few batsmen around the valley having nightmares this week thinking about their missed opportunities to score big. The game of the round was at Healesville, where the second placed Bloods hosted Coldstream. Healesville won the toss and elected to bat and captain Geoff Stock lead from the front against the inform Crocs opening bowlers Mathew Stark and Jarrod Bayliss. Coldstream made early inroads, but Stock held firm continuing his great form scoring 43. The pace trio of Matt Jonson (3/24), Stark (3/41) and Bayliss (2/39) would be well pleased with their day’s effort. The game sits well in the balance. The Coldstream bats have the talent but need to improve dramatically on the previous performances while Healesville has a rounded attack that will challenge the batsmen. Woori Yallock hosted Seville in a key clash for these sides and its ambitions to be inside the top four at the Christmas break. Seville opened up the batting and the experienced Andy Kay provided the backbone to the innings. But he was disappointed in not taking advantage of the start losing his wicket on 50. Tiger’s captain Daniel Mock put his keys in the bowl as he is proving to be an expert swinger. Mock has taken wickets in every game this season as his swinging medium pacers are proving difficult for the batsman to handle. His figures of 4/53 kept things in check for the home side and with the assistance of Simon
Young’s 2/28 they bowled the Blues out for 206. With batsmen of the quality of Mock, Young and Ryan Smith, the Tigers are well in the hunt, but they will need to do it against the competition’s best attack. In the final game of the round, Warburton-Millgrove travelled to Yarra Junction in a bid to keep itself at arms distance inside the top four. Yarra Junction batted first and showed true grit against a consistent Burras attack. Yarra Junction has been known to fold under continual pressure but this was not to be as the experienced Paul Osbourne (44), Daniel Lever (41) and Dan Robertson (35) ensured the Eagles were up for the fight. Unfortunately with neither of these bats going on to post big scores the home team could not quite put the visitors away with a commanding total finishing on 6/183. Old timer Adam Humphrey relished his return to the top grade leading the young Burras attack taking 3/46. With the Yarra Junction oval being lush a total of 183 could prove tough to chase for the visitors however with many talented batsmen the chase could go down to the wire with plenty at stake for the winners. Many try but few succeed By DENNIS FULLER WITH the weather Gods smiling upon Emerald Golf Course last Saturday, members crowded the car park looking for a partner for the two man ambrose. In the end, only two were successful in their quests. Captain Andrew Cutting and young tyro Broc Reynolds rode their seven handicap home for a net score of 59 to don the winners’ chartreuse coats. Their eagle on the par five, third hole set them up for a winning score with each contributing at least one shot. It was Cutting’s brilliant shot from 60 meters that rounded off the eagle. Whenever there is an ambrose event the pairing of Mike
Litchfield and Ken Sumsion usually push to the top. They steered their 10 handicap home for a net 63 to come in second. In third place was the pairing of Ban Balfour and Dennis Fuller whose 7.25 handicap was good enough to score 63.75. Down the line were Peter Stevens and Dave Jennings (7.25) on 64.75 and Ross Martin and Peter Jones (7) finished with 65. Broc Reynolds was nearest the pin on the fourth, Mark Starick the seventh, Ben Balfour the 12th, Peter Stevens the 13th and Dave Jennings rocked up to the 18th tee and played a shot that eclipsed all others to pocket the pro pin cash. The ladies competition saw
run-away winners in that all conquering pairing of Irene Scott and Brianna McCoy who left the rest of the field seriously in their wake. Wednesday’s Ordinarily Flavoured Golf (OFG) using the erratic OFG handicapping system saw Mick Petrie (36) hand out the shellacking to the field when he rolled in with 46 stableford points to win well. The unlucky Graeme Fergus (24), who put in a pearler of a round for 44 points, still fell into second place. In third was Sepp Krummenacher (29), another unlucky player whose 42 points also fell short of the top gong. Next Saturday the December VGL Monthly Medal is up for grabs.

Sensational show on track THE sun made an appearance following weeks of inclement weather to showcase the new track and field venue in the Yarra Valley for athletics. The Yarra Ranges team of volunteers were up at the crack of dawn on Sunday to ensure all final preparations were attended to for a successful EMR Region Relay Championships held at the Morrison Reserve venue. It did not take long for all Eastern Region Centres to have their gazebos set up and for the first race to take place. Yarra Ranges Under 11 4x200 metre mixed team got the show moving sensationally with a gold performance in the first race of the day. The under 15/16 mixed team finished the day winning gold making it three from three events, the 4x200 metre, medley and 4x100 metre. Their effort and determination was something for the younger athletes to aspire to. There were a number of other outstanding performances with medals to
the Under 9 Girls, Under 9 Mixed, Under 12 Girls, Under 12 Boys, Under Nine to 11 Girls, Under 12 to 13 Girls, Under 14 to 16 Girls, Under 14 to 16 Boys, Under 15 to 16 Mixed. All the young athletes put in a fantastic effort after several months of training to run as fast as possible and for smooth baton changes. Special mention to young Jayden Clarke who donned the spikes three times to cover for missing or late athletes only to miss out on a run. Full results and state qualifiers will be available at yarrarangesathletics.org. au. A small team of athletes competed at Round Four of the AV Shield held at Lakeside Stadium last Saturday afternoon. Even though the numbers were down in many events the performances were still of the highest quality. Reeves Shield thrillers LOCAL cricket supporters were treated to some tight finishes to complete round six of the Reeves Shield at the weekend. Ferntree Gully paid dearly for losing three late wickets before stumps last week, falling seven runs short to Upwey Tecoma, who rebounded from their poor loss in the previous round to Johnson Park. Dain Howeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 77 proved to be the difference between the two sides, setting the Blues 175 to win and then brilliantly supported by reliable seamer Leigh Bianchi with 5/61 to grasp six valuable points. Top side Eildon Park tasted their first defeat of the season at the hands of Johnson Park by six runs. Chasing an improbable 260, the Panthers put up a terrific chase to be dismissed in the last over of the game for 255 thanks to a superb 89 from 21-year-old former Mulgrave junior Lee Waldron. For the Sharks, Ben Stallworthy collected 4/50 to go with his half-century last week. Monbulk hosted Knox Gardens in a one day game with the visitors successful by 29 runs courtesy of Shannon Small (44) and Jarrod Butcher (42) arguably the best in-form opening combination in the competition. Blake Walter performed well for Monbulk, with 30 and 3/16 but it was the wise old Travis â&#x20AC;&#x153;Agentâ&#x20AC;? Mulder with 3/22 from his eight overs who stole the show. Knoxfield are playing with confidence and defended 187 against Footballers, who were restricted to 168 as Scott McKenzie took 4/53 elevating the Knights to their fourth win. In the final game, Upper Gully Kings were too powerful with a dominant victory over bottom side Belgrave. Daniel Beyer top scored for the Kings as Belgraveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Luke Manion took four of the eight wickets to fall in a game the Magpies should quickly put behind them. Highlights from Decoite Shield included a century to Manning from St Johns Tecoma who fell agonisingly short of an outright win over Knox City. Saints bowler Kyle Grenda too nine wickets in the match. South Belgrave just got home against the Lysterfield Beavers by 14 runs.
Auravale upset Rowville in the second last over of the day as 50-year-old Kevin McDonald took 4/31 in a return to the flannels.
