BASED at the historic RAAF Williams Point Cook Airfield, Vintage Tiger Moth Joyflights specialise in scenic and aerobatic flights around Melbourne in our fleet of Tiger Moths and our Yak 52 Russian military aircraft. Take a step back in time as you climb aboard one of its award winning 1940s WWII Tiger Moths. You will look the part wearing their leather flying helmet, goggles, gloves and flying jacket as you feel the wind in your face and experience the freedom of open cockpit flying. If you dare, try some WWII style aerial dog fighting and, for thrill seekers, take a ride in the awesome Yak 52. Chief pilot and director, Garry Herne, is a highly experienced International Airline Captain flying the A330 and all flights are conducted with the highest degree of professional-
ism and safety. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority issued Garry with ‘Testing Officer Approval’ for low level aerobatic endorsements and he regularly gives aerobatic flying displays in the Tiger Moth at major airshows and for the RAAF Museum. Vintage Tiger Moth Joyflights has been operating since 1998 and has completed over 8000 flights safely. Book yourself a flight or buy a friend one by purchasing a Gift Voucher for Christmas. A flight in a Tiger Moth or Yak 52 makes an ideal gift for someone who has everything, an aviation enthusiast, a thrill seeker or anyone who wants to try something different. Gift vouchers can be purchased via mail order or picked up from the Point Cook Flying Club. The crew can organise flights over the central business
district, around the beaches of Port Phillip Bay or anywhere in between. There is a range of standard scenic routes to suit everybody’s taste and budget. For those who want more action, experience what it would have been like to dog fight like the Red Baron in WWI and take the aerobatic option. From the front seat of the Tiger Moth, you can experience the same sensations and excitement as a WWI pilot experienced in his open cockpit bi-plane fighter more than 90 years ago. Werribee Park Shuttle provides shuttle bus service from the city to Point Cook for $25 return. Check the website for departure times leaving from the Melbourne Arts Centre Call 1300 138 207 during business hours or email bookings@tigermothjoyflights.com for more information.

Crime rate drops By CHARLENE MACAULAY
It’s Christmas time again
IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Trees are going up and wreaths are being hung as families across the West deck the halls with decorations and finalise their Christmas presents. Six-year-old Alexandra Savona is keen to make the nice list this year as she eagerly awaits the arrival of Santa Claus.

THE City of Maribyrnong has received an early Christmas present - crime is on the decline. Victoria Police released the crime statistics for the September 2013 quarter last week, revealing a 9.2 per cent decrease in offences across the municipality since the same time last year. Overall crime dropped from 8736 offences in the September 2012 quarter to 7933 this year, with a 38.9 per cent drop in drug offences, a 35.6 per cent dip in car thefts, a 25.4 per cent decrease in thefts from motor vehicles, and a 10.1 per cent drop in robberies. The municipality has bucked a state-wide increase in crime, with a 2.7 per cent jump in offences recorded across Victoria. Footscray Police Inspector Tony Long is calling on residents to watch the speed limit and keep their homes and properties safe as the silly season approaches. Five people have been killed on the municipality’s roads this year, while a further 240 have been injured in car accidents. “This quarter, the crime statis-
tics are a little bit like a Christmas stocking - some impressive bits and pieces, but some other things you really didn’t want,” Insp Long said. “Reducing road trauma continues to be a priority for us and we will be participating in all the major road safety operations across the festive season. “While we are achieving a reasonable result with our injury collisions, we need to do more,” he said. “Be warned - we will be enforcing speed limits (no more ‘just a little bit over’) and we will also be concentrating on distraction offences such as using a mobile phone,” Insp Long said. “Let’s make this festive season a fatality free one in Maribyrnong.” Insp Long said family violence was continuing to drive up crimes against the person, with a 15.5 per cent spike in assaults over the last quarter. “Our non-family violence assaults are also rising, however they constitute a very difficult area for us because on many occasions the victim and offender are known to each other and the incidents are occurring in homes and at parties and the like.”

Whitten Oval was officially rechristened Victoria University Whitten Oval last Friday to highlight the ever-growing partnership between VU and the Western Bulldogs. Besides the name change, the Bulldogs will field a team in the VFL in 2014 named the Footscray Bulldogs, and VU is the major partner with first naming rights of Whitten Oval.
Meanwhile, VU will enter into a substantially enhanced sport science research and knowledge exchange program with the Western Bulldogs. The program will build upon the existing level of sport science engagement and will develop new knowledge to inform coaching programs and improve the on-field football performance of both the Western Bulldogs’ AFL and VFL teams. VU undergraduate and postgraduate research students and staff, jointly appointed by the Western Bulldogs and VU, will
work together on a daily basis to improve sport science knowledge and research. Bulldogs president Peter Gordon and VU Vice Chancellor Peter Dawkins officially unveiled the Victoria University Whitten Oval signage and Footscray Bulldogs playing jumper last week. Prof Dawkins said the partnership would ensure that VU continued to be at the forefront of sport science research and knowledge exchange.

THE number 13 is thought to be unlucky for some, and that certainly proved true for 13 City of Maribyrnong motorists last financial year. RACV Insurance claims data reveals that 13 cars in the City of Maribyrnong were damaged in malicious acts between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2013, costing a total $56,106 in repairs. A further 110 vehicles were damaged across the West over the same period, leaving a $402,575 repair bill. Brimbank was the worst hit, with 37 incidents costing almost $100,000. This was followed by Wyndham with 35 incidents costing nearly $95,000 and Hobsons Bay with 20 incidents costing $75,000. RACV general manager Insurance Paul Northey said malicious damage to vehicles caused significant inconvenience to motorists and cost millions to repair. “Last year, RACV Insurance paid out more than $3.44 million to members whose vehicles had suffered malicious damage,” Mr Northey said. “With the average malicious damage claim costing $2894, motorists should ensure they have adequate insurance cover to avoid a hefty vehicle repair bill. “Of course, prevention is better than cure. One of the best preventative steps motorists can take to protect their vehicle is to park it off the street and where possible, in a secure garage. “If you must park on the street, try and park in a well-lit location with people frequently passing by, as this can act as a deterrent to opportunistic thieves and vandals.” Mr Northey said people who parked their car in a garage should make sure they locked their garage door.
THE sod has been turned on the Braybrook Community Hub, which will deliver Braybrook’s first public library. Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell joined Sports Minister Hugh Delahunty and Maribyrnong City Council representatives in Braybrook last Monday to officially launch the project with a ceremonial turn of the first sod. The $12.5 million overhaul will see the Braybrook Community Centre rechristened the Braybrook Community Hub, which will bring Braybrook its first library and an integrated early years centre. The hub will also include more community meeting spaces, while the site’s adjoining sporting ground, Skinner Reserve, will receive a facelift. The Skinner Reserve pavilion will be redeveloped and will include an extension of the community centre, player and umpires’ change rooms, accessible toilets, and a new multipurpose social space for up to 150 people, featuring a kitchen, and kiosk facilities. 1110327-LB49-13

Dope driving hits high By CHARLENE MACAULAY NEARLY 30 City of Maribyrnong drivers were caught out with illicit drugs in their system in the past 12 months. Statistics released by Victoria Police reveal 27 drivers across the municipality were caught out for driving under the influence of drugs across the 2012-13 financial year. From that, 21 of the offenders were men and six were women, with the bulk of offenders (10) aged between 30 to 34. Road Policing Command Assis-
tant Commissioner Robert Hill said one in 11 motorists tested positive to driving with illicit drugs in their system during Operation RAID, a drug and alcohol operation run across the state during November. Asst Comm Hill said it was important to change the culture among drivers who believe it was OK to drive with any form of impairment. “Whilst drink driving remains one of the biggest threats on our roads, we recognise drug driving is a significant issue and needs to be a major focus for Victoria Police and
our road safety partners,” he said. “Victoria Police conducts around 3.5 to 4 million alcohol screening tests a year and 42,000 roadside drug tests. “In Victoria in 2012, one in 20 drivers were confirmed to have one or more of the illicit drugs present whilst driving and one in 238 drivers were found to driving with a BAC in excess of the prescribed amount. “The lessons learned in implementing a successful alcohol impaired driving program are now being applied to combat the drug
impaired driving issue, however Operation RAID results show there is still more work to be done in this area. “That is why Victoria Police has made a commitment to expanding our drug testing capabilities and strengthening our drink driving enforcement capabilities. “We have improved our intelligence processes to ensure we will have police focused on the right areas at the right times to remove those drivers who create the biggest risk on Victorian roads.”
Cool room gets hot A COOL room at the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable and Flower market was extensively damaged following a fire last week. Around 50 MFB fire-fighters arrived at the two-storey market building on Wednesday night to find large smoke plumes issuing from the complex. Fire-fighters located the fire in a large cool room on the ground floor and were able to confine the structural fire damage to the immediate area, ensuring the remainder of the cool rooms continued to function which protected the large quantities of stock contained within them. The fire took 50 minutes to bring under control and crews remained on scene throughout the night to continue to extinguish and ventilate the premises. 1110481-HM49-13

Toast to the Oracle as art meets science By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE humble piece of toast has been given a make-over at Victoria University’s Big West offering. In Oracle, a room plastered with 3500 pieces of toast sings, while another room has a pit that produces bubbles up to three metres in length before they explode into flames. Oracle is an interactive art installation created by engineers and scientists at Victoria University,
featuring intricately designed largescale kinetic art installations, each designed to interact with the audience in unique ways. Inspired by the oracles of ancient myths and legends, each installation makes use of robotics and scientific principle to respond to physical presence or oral commands to engage the participant. The installations are designed to engage audiences of all ages.
“It’s a fusion between science engineering and art,” Victoria University project leader Nick Athanasiou said. “It’s basically designed to showcase the fact that art and science can actually co-exist quite comfortably the two overlap each other. “There are three metre tall bubble sculptures that erupt into flames, stretches of forests that decay and are reborn before your very eyes,
and a very large wall consisting of three-and-a-half thousand pieces of toast that sing.” Mr Athanasiou is a member of Skunk Control, a group of engineers and scientists from the College of Engineering and Science at Victoria University who created Oracle. The group collective run diverse community outreach programs and general science units and are part of the team that run the University’s Foundation Studies program.

YARRAVILLE West Primary School students have scored the Screen It trifecta, taking out the Primary Animation category for the third year running. Grade 5 and 6 students in the school’s claymation program spent more than six months fine tuning the script, making the models and film sets, filming and editing a short film Max’s Farm, which was written by Grade 6 student Max Baltas. The two-minute film centred around a greedy farmer Max who wanted to be the top farmer in the Farmers’ Weekly newspaper. After eliminating cicadas, birds, lizards and other animals and insects, Max realises he actually needs them to make his farm a success. Yarraville West Primary School also took out top honours in 2011 and 2012. “They were very excited, and Max was just beside himself to think his story won,” teacher Heather Britton said. “They’re thrilled and looking forward to the presentation ceremony.” The Screen It Awards is Australia’s largest competition for school-aged film makers, animators and game makers. This year, the competition received 373 entries created by 1489 students nationwide across three categories: animated film, live action film and video games. All movies were made around this year’s theme, Connect, intended as a trigger for students and teachers to investigate topical issues while learning film-making techniques along the way. The students will receive their award this Friday at a special screening held at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

Bridge ends road trouble By CHARLENE MACAULAY
Future leaders deserve awards By CHARLENE MACAULAY MEET two of Braybrook College’s brightest leaders. Year 10 student Judy Truong and Year 12 student Nhi Tran were among 805 Victorian students to receive the Long Tan Leadership Award. The awards began in 2006 and seek to encourage leadership and teamwork among school-aged students to enhance their personal development and their contribution towards the community. Students in years 10 and 12 were recognised with awards of $250 and $550 respectively, along with a certificate of merit designed to highlight the achievements of these young leaders.
The pair are both part of the school’s leadership team to help out year seven students and other year levels. Both girls also helped to organise this year’s Year 12 graduation ceremony, where Nhi was asked to do the graduation speech. “Both girls were selected based on what they’ve done in the past that indicates that they have leadership potential, and both girls are SRC representatives, both girls have been involved in sport, they’ve done a lot of co-curricular stuff that has lifted their profile, and as a result of that, when they got to Year 10 they were selected for this group,” Braybrook College teacher Petti Hadzisavas said. “They’re also both in the
advanced class, they’re quite academic, but they’ve also balanced their life out with co-curricular, which is quite unusual.” Judy, who competed in the state table tennis championships last week, is also vice captain of the red house. Nhi made it to district finals in badminton this year, plays table tennis, is a debator, and won the Deer Park Lions public speaking award this year. Both girls hope to study Biomedicine at Melbourne University. “It can be really hard (to juggle it all) sometimes ... but I think that it’s worth it, and I need a healthy balance in my life. If it’s just education, school would be kind of boring,” Judy said.
Once complete, the State Government will start planning stages three and four of the Federation Trail, including a link from Fogarty Ave to Williamstown Rd and then from Williamstown Rd to Hyde St. The works will turn the Federation Trail into a 24-kilometre shared cycling and walking path between the Maltby Bypass in Werribee and Hyde St in Yarraville. State Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the bridge option was chosen as the best and safest solution for both cyclists and pedestrians. “This is an important stage of the project that will ensure all users of the path, including
cyclists, can cross the freight rail line safely and continue on their journey,” he said. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said the bridge would cater for the growing number of cyclists across the West. “This is a really exciting project and one that I’m sure cyclists in the west of Melbourne will be delighted to see underway.” The State Government is investing more than $30 million in 2013-14 into a range of cycling projects including improved cycling paths, new trails, bike cages and hoops as well as education and awareness campaigns to support cycling.

A $5.3 MILLION contract will help bridge the gap for cyclists and walkers along the Federation Trail. The State Government has awarded North-Vic Construction the contract to build the Federation Trail bridge across the Newport-Albion freight line. The bridge and additional works will connect the end of the current trail at Millers Rd through to Fogarty Ave in Yarraville. Construction is tipped to start early next year, and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014.

By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE South end of Nicholson St will be a hive of action this month with a special pop-up market. The Nicholson South PopUp Market will see the street closed off to traffic from Buckley St and will include stalls featuring Melbourne-made jewellery, home wares, clothes, cards and gifts and a mouthwatering array of food from around the world. Meanwhile, the Big West Festival is curating entertainment for the event, including theatre ensemble Born in a Taxi, William Lee, the Thomcords and band of brothers Robbie Bundle and the Adopted Souls. The twilight event aims to support the businesses currently affected by the Nicholson St closure due to Regional Rail Link works. Addis Café owner Mel Dominique and his wife Berhane will be taking part in the event, offering coffee roasting demonstrations and samplings of their famous food and coffee. The pair have been Nicholson St traders for the past 10 years, starting out selling imported Ethiopian spices, then branching out into coffee to become Addis Café. Addis Café also roasts its own coffee and creates different blends. Mr Dominique said the partial closure of Nicholson St made it a bit harder for customers to get to the South end of Nicholson St, but would be worth it in the end. “The project has already started and whether you like it

King of the kidney By CHARLENE MACAULAY IF YOU’VE got kidney troubles, Shlomo Cohney is your man. Dr Cohney is an internationally acclaimed nephrologist, and works across Western Health’s hospitals to treat various kidney diseases and oversee transplants. Nephrology is a branch of medical science that deals with the study of normal kidney function, kidney problems, the treatment of kidney problems and renal replacement therapy. “I’m interested in all aspects of medicine and didn’t really want to focus exclusively on one area, and in kidney disease there’s a lot of different condi-
tions that result in kidney failures,” Dr Cohney said. “Once patients have kidney failure, they develop a lot of complications, so you tend to be managing all these different things and you have an ongoing relationship with the patient and their families.” Dr Cohney most recently went to Thailand and Bangkok as an ambassador for the International Society of Nephrology to discuss some of his groundbreaking work in kidney transplants. “They wanted me to teach on various aspects of kidney transplantation, a particular area was overcoming any incompatibilities that prevent living donors donating a kidney to
a particular person,” he said. “The easiest example is in the case of blood groups - in blood transfusions, you can’t give blood to someone who’s a different blood group generally, and it’s the same with transplantation, or it has been. “It’s an area that’s been overcome to a certain extent with kidney transplantation, particularly in the last decade, and I was pivotal in developing that in Australia.” Dr Cohney has also been actively involved in paired kidney donation, where a kidney donor who is incompatible with their chosen recipient can exchange kidneys with another pair in the same situation.
Dr Shlomo Cohney recently chaired a conference in Thailand. 109048 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

Dogs in the red THE Western Bulldogs have announced an operating loss of $143,090 for the year ending 31 October 2013. Bulldogs chief executive Simon Garlick said that the club had worked hard in 2013 to minimise the financial impact of two challenging years onfield while continuing to increase investment in the core business of football. “The entire club has balanced the need to manage expenditure while continuing to invest in our football department in what is clearly recognised as an unequal environment,” Mr Garlick said. “Although the result falls short of break-even for the club - the operating loss represents less than one half of one per cent of total revenue for the year. “While the club is reporting a small operating loss, it is encouraging that our EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) for the 2013 year was $1.881 million and that we have increased revenue by $1.3 million in 2013, enabling us to invest an extra $1.18 million into football. “The club expects to invest up to a further $1.5 million in football next year - looking to have the capacity to pay the full salary cap, if strategically required.” Mr Garlick said that it was important to note that the club had prioritised increasing spending in football to ensure on-field competitiveness.

BMD Constructions has been awarded the contract for the Webb Dock Project. Premier Denis Napthine and Minister for Ports David Hodgett announced the successful contractor last week, which will see BMD Constructions deliver important roads and services infrastructure that will enable the fast tracking of additional container and automotive capacity for Victoria. The works are part of the $1.6 billion Port Capacity Project. “BMD Constructions will build new roads that directly connect the new terminals to Melbourne’s M1 Freeway,” Dr Napthine said. “By closing the port’s existing entrance and creating direct connections to the M1, port traffic is directed away from local residential streets.” Mr Hodgett said that the construction works would also include substantial upgrades to the existing roundabouts on Todd Rd and the development of high quality buffers around Webb Dock to protect residential areas from noise and enhance visual amenity. BMD Constructions is expected to complete the necessary pre-start approval process during the next two months for work to commence early in the New Year.

What do I have to do? Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.
Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

IT’S time to get snap happy. Footscray’s Colour Box Studio is running the Disposable Camera Project for a second time this year after the success and loads of fun during the first edition. The project involves the public picking up a disposable camera from Colour Box Studio or the Flinders St station steps, snapping away for 24 hours and then dropping their cameras back the next day. Colour Box Studio then takes care of the developing,
processing, and installation of the photos on their studio walls. They will be on display to the public during the Nicholson Street South Pop Up Market on 12 December. Colour Box volunteer events co-ordinator Kristina Arnott said participants could take photos of whatever they liked, with previous participants choosing to document their day, or sticking to a theme. Ms Arnott said it didn’t matter if you were a professional or student photographer, were only familiar with iPhone cameras or had never pressed a shutter re-
lease button in your life. “We want to get as many people involved as possible to get people to find space for creativity in their everyday lives,” Ms Arnott said. “It was great to see what inspired people, or what they had seen throughout their day (during the first Disposable Camera Project).” To take part, register at http://colourboxstudio.com/ disposable-camera-project/ and then pick up your camera on 7 December and shoot to your heart’s content.

Fighting cats are not fun home SUMMER time means it is cat breeding season yet again. This means litters of abandoned kittens and stray cats as well as a rise in neighbourhood cats fighting. Cat bite abscesses will require a visit to the vet for a course of antibiotics and pain relief or possibly even surgical drainage. Unfortunately, the viral diseases associated with fighting may be with your cat for life, particularly Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV affects the immune system causing fever, weight loss, oral disease and chronic infections in years to come. Cat owners should discuss with their vet the best ways to protect their cat from fighting, with
an indoor lifestyle being the best recommendation. Now is also the time to ensure both male and female cats have been desexed. Female cats can get pregnant from as young as four or five months of age, so should not be allowed outside until after their desexing operation. Desexing male cats will help prevent fighting as well as reduce spraying of urine around the house. There are a huge number of kittens and cats in our area not being responsibly owned and to address this problem the Wyndham Council is promoting desexing, microchipping and registration at a reduced fee via our clinic. Wyndham cat owners can contact us on 9748 6644 for more information on this fantastic initiative.

for the register that your pet is listed with. If you do not have success finding your pet’s record using petaddress.com.au, you have two options: a. Contact each register individually with your pet’s microchip number to see if they have your record b. Take your pet to a vet with a microchip scanner and have the microchip scanned for the number and register. Remember, when updating your pet’s microchip details, you should also ensure that your council has the most current contact information for your pet’s registration. If you are interested in finding out more about microchipping your cat, dog or horse, visit www. rspcavic.org or contact your local RSPCA for more information. 1058240-KC2-13
IT is extremely important for you to keep your pet’s microchip details up to date as it is the best way to ensure you and your best friend can be reunited. Every year RSPCA Victoria admits thousands of animals without micro-chips, or with microchips that are out of date, making it very hard for us to return lost pets to their owners. When updating your details it is best for you to list your mobile number as your primary contact just in case you are separated in an emergency when landline phone numbers may not be working, or you are on holiday. There are many microchip registries, so to check which registry your pet is listed with, use the following steps: Visit www.petaddress.com.au and enter your pet’s microchip number. This site hosts a search engine to search multiple registers at once. If you get a result, it will give you the contact details

Feet fit for summer SUMMER means warm weather, holidays and increased outdoor activities, which also means more time on your feet, often barefoot or in thongs or slip-on shoes. This can take a toll on your feet and legs. So what can you do to look after your feet and legs this summer? Leading sports podiatrist and founder of Foot & Leg Pain Clinics, Dr Paul Dowie, has some simple tips: Vary your footwear Thongs, slip-ons and high heels can have an adverse affect on your feet and legs if worn too much, so wear properly fitted, supportive shoes with lower heels and decent cushioning, whenever possible. Sandals (with little or no heel) are often a good option, the straps hold the shoe to your feet so your feet and toes don’t have to do all the work. Avoid too much barefoot activity Going barefoot outside is not a
bad thing, but it does significantly increase the risk of foot injury. Stepping on foreign objects or hot surfaces, like concrete and sand, can be damaging and painful. Bare feet in public locations, like swimming pools and showers, can lead to infections. So keep bare feet to when you’re at home, on safe surfaces or relaxing. Always wear appropriate exercise shoes Even when it’s hot, you still need to exercise in appropriate shoes. Many people take long walks in summer, but doing this barefoot, or in thongs or slip-ons can be very stressful to your feet and legs, with muscles having to do a lot of extra work to accommodate inappropriate footwear. Use a 30+ SPF sunscreen all over your feet Feet can be very susceptible to sunburn, both on top and underneath. It’s important to get any skin

Always get foot and leg pain checked Sore feet can be a symptom of more serious underlying issues and back, hip, knee and ankle pain can all result from bad foot posture. Prevention is better than cure, so don’t wait to get any persisting niggles checked. The good news is, using the latest medical research and treatments, an experienced sports podiatrist can assist most foot and leg pain quickly and effectively, including issues that have been diagnosed as untreatable or require surgery or medication as the only option. Sport Roos gain edge over Bulldogs By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater’s impressive run of form has hit a snag with the Bulldogs going down to the Greenvale Kangaroos by 20 runs in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. Played over Saturday and Sunday, the contest looked like a missmatch on paper with Footscray occupying top spot on the ladder while Greenvale had struggled in the first half of the season. But all that was forgotten when the Kangaroos won the toss and elected to bat. The Greenvale opening pair of Eric Ghasperidis and Jake Martin handled the inform Jake Haberfield well on their way to a 56-run stand for the first wicket. Finally, it was first change bowler Lucas Dredge who made the breakthrough for Footscray. Dredge re-
moved Martin and added a second victim in quick succession to keep the contest on an even keel. Both sides fought hard for the remainder of the afternoon as the Greenvale total continued to rise. Despite being 9/221, the Kangaroos managed to claw their way to 280 to claim day-one honours. In reply, the Footscray innings was littered with contributors however, no individual batsman was able to make a big score. Dean Russ, Anthony Barton, Travis Dean, Dylan Kight, Shanuka Dissanayaka and Michael Hill all made between 21 and 44. Despite the tail wagging through Haberfield and Hamish Winter-Irving, the total proved too great and Footscray was all out for 260 in the 82nd over. The result sees the Bulldogs slip to a 6-2 win/loss record for the season.
YARRAVILLE Club will be hoping it can play its own wicket better than Beaumaris did in Senior Division Turf Cricket on Saturday. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first on the Clubbers’ home deck at Walker Oval, Beaumaris managed to come up with a very formidable 6/377 from its 80 overs in the middle. Justin Baker, who recently stepped down as Yarraville Club captain-coach, told Star afterward the Clubbers’ bowling attack was solid throughout the day, but couldn’t hold a rampant Beaumaris once the wicket flattened out after tea. “Our bowlers didn’t really do a lot wrong,” Baker said. “They bowled four or five really good balls an over and then maybe one bad ball, which sort of let them off the hook again. “We held all our catches, we didn’t miss any run outs and we capitalised on every opportunity that presented itself. But they just batted well to the conditions.” Despite now facing the seemingly monumental task
of chasing down 378, Baker remains confident his boys can get the job done provided they are afforded similar conditions this weekend. For Baker, it will be a matter of emulating, then improving on Beaumaris’ ability to score the majority of the runs after the tea break. “The way they batted is a prime example of how to do it and it’s been our motto at our ground that you want to have wickets in hand at tea time,” Baker explained. “It doesn’t even matter if you’re on 80 or 100. They were only on about 120 at tea and they’ve put on 250 afterwards, and that’s only four an over after tea. “So if we can have wickets in hand at tea time, preferably two down, maybe even less, then I’m sure they’ll have no problems chasing down those runs.” Meanwhile in the VTCA North Division, Footscray United could only muster an all-out 83 in 63.2 overs against West Coburg on Saturday. West Coburg will resume at 0/3 this weekend at United’s Scovell Reserve.

Sides short on big hitters STRONG batting wasn’t really the order of the day at Ray Davies Oval in the VTCA North Division on Saturday. It was there where Laverton stumbled to 178 against Keilor Park in 66 overs. Brent Sheean and Matthew O’Brien both led the way for the visitors throughout the day, scoring 51 and 49 respectively. But other than those contributions Laverton struggled, with every other hitter failing to reach anything higher than 20. Dilshan Udage Kankanamage was the main enforcer for Keilor Park, claiming three Laverton wickets for the innings. Keilor Park was then given 14 overs to bat through at the end of the day’s play and managed to get 14 runs on the board. However the home team will resume its pursuit of 179 with only nine wickets in hand this weekend, after James Baker scored a breakthrough late on Saturday to finish with figures of 1/5 and three maidens from seven overs.

A COMBINED 14 wickets were claimed for just 122 runs between Sunshine United and Newport-Digman in the VTCA West B1 competition on Saturday. Sunshine United was sent in to bat first on its home deck at Selwyn Park, which after 57.3 overs looked to be a very wise decision by Newport-Digman captain Matthew Shiell. The Sunshine United top order capitulated to lose three wickets for just 10 runs before they were able to steady the ship, albeit temporarily. Newport-Digman’s Matthew Mason sent shutters through the Sunshine United order on his way to a very tidy 5/17 and five maidens from 14 and a half overs, helping to restrict the host to an all-out 80 halfway through the 58th over. Despite their established advantage with the ball, NewportDigman crumbled even harder than Sunshine United did with the bat earlier in the day, succumbing to a measly total of 4/22. Another 59 runs are required for victory this weekend. THE eyes of the Western Suburbs were locked on TAC Cup side the Western Jets and VFL sides Werribee and Williamstown ahead of last month’s National and Rookie AFL drafts. While the three sides combined to promote four players into the game’s elite competition, it was another Western Suburbs product that snuck under the radar. Hoppers Crossing’s Michael Luxford was also drafted by Geelong as a Category B rookie. Luxford has been well known in the West as one of the hottest young basketball talents in Australia. After making his first Victorian basketball team at age 11, the teenager has been a regular fixture in all state representative sides since. In 2012 he was also selected in Australia’s under-17 team which competed in the FIBA under-17 World Championship. With the help of Luxford, the team went on to claim a silver medal. After a successful 2013 which saw him named the Most Valuable Player in the under-23 Big V League while playing for Werribee, Luxford has elected to try his chances at AFL rather than pursue a career on the court. “It was an enormous decision for Michael and his family to go down a different path and choose footy,” Cats recruiting manager Stephen Wells said. “Michael is a very talented sportsman, a high achiever in basketball and school and after plenty of trials with him we can see genuine potential.” Luxford will fulfil his prior basketball commitments which include representing his secondary school, Caulfield Grammar, at next week’s national schools basketball competition and representing Victoria in the under-20 team next February at the National State Championship in Perth. “The club has been very lenient and fantastic in allowing me to go back and fulfil my prior basketball commitments, I’m very grateful,” Luxford said.

In form and in demand By LIAM TWOMEY AFTER just one season at Williamstown, Cameron Wood is back in the AFL system following his selection by Carlton in last week’s rookie draft. Wood will be reunited with former coach Michael Malthouse at the Blues. In his first stint at the AFL, the 204cm Wood was drafted by the Brisbane Lions with the 18th pick in the 2004 national draft. After 16 games with the Lions, he was traded to Collingwood where he stayed on the Magpies’ list for five seasons and played in 48 games. “It is starting to sink in now that I am here,” Wood said at his first official press conference as a Blue. “My head has been going a million miles an hour for the last 24 hours. I’ve been getting messages and calls from probably everyone I’ve ever met. Everyone is pretty excited. My mum, she has texted me about 45 times. I’m still in shock. “I spoke to Shane Rogers on Friday night. He just rang me, it was a random number (and I) didn’t answer it, but got the voicemail. I listened to it and thought it was a prank. I Googled Shane Rogers to make sure he was the recruiting manager at Carlton.” Wood played in 20 matches for the Seagulls in the 2013 season and was one of the standout ruckmen in the VFL competition. He kicked 11 goals and was named in the Williamstown’s best players on 10 occasions including two of the club’s three finals. Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon said the club was delighted to see Wood picked up. “It’s great reward for him and recognition of his form throughout the year. In his own words Cam had his most consistent (season) to date and established himself as one of the best VFL-listed ruckmen in the competition.” “Cam was extremely popular with his team-mates and will be sorely missed, but we’re very excited to have another player taken after our success last year in the rookie draft. It reflects well on our club and our environment having been able to give our players opportunities at the next level.” Wood joins a growing list of players drafted into the AFL system from the Seagulls in recent years. The 2012 rookie draft saw Brett Goodes and Jack Frost end up on AFL lists while former Williamstown player Dane Rampe was also selected.

Tigers’ Ross now a Hawk Rivalry
tested
By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE continued its golden draft run after Ben Ross was picked up by Hawthorn last week. Ross was selected at pick number 57 in Wednesday’s rookie draft. “We are absolutely thrilled for Ben,” Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch said. “He has stuck at it and worked incredibly hard at VFL level. He won the Liston Trophy last year. There wasn’t an opportunity forthcoming then and again, credit to him he could have walked away but he wants to play footy at the highest level he possibly can. “He stuck at it and the opportunity came his way.” Ross played in 21 matches for the Tigers in 2013 and was named in the club’s best players on eight occasions. Speaking about his club’s rookie draft selections, Hawthorn recruiting manager Graham Wright said on the Hawks’ website, they had their eye on Ross for some time after two impressive seasons in the VFL. “He played more half back and wing and we really liked the way he developed there as well and we know he can play a number of roles,” Wright said. “He can play wing, half forward and on ball but we know he can go to half back as well. He’s a good user of the ball, has good endurance, good speed so he brings a lot to the table, it’s just a matter of where the coaches want to slot him in.”

Ben Ross was drafted by Hawthorn last week. 104137 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI Ross joins 2013 Werribee teammates Ben Brown and Luke McDonald in the game’s elite after they were both taken in the national draft. “That is what we are about, giving guys an opportunity at the highest level we possibly can,” Balloch said. “As a club we will put the structure in place to help them achieve that but they also need to be self-driven young men. Hats off to them and from the club’s point of view we are thrilled to have an influence on those draftees.”
ST ALBANS will host Deer Park in the traditional opening to the 2013 Western Region Football League season. The pair, which both qualified for finals this year, will play a standalone Friday night fixture on 4 April. That won’t be the only marquee game of round one with Werribee Districts playing its first match in the WRFL under lights against Hoppers Crossing on the Saturday night. Another highlight on the fixture, which was released last week, included two Division One Anzac Day games involving Sunshine squaring off against Werribee Districts and Albion meeting Deer Park. “We put out the opportunity for clubs to submit requests and both Sunshine and Albion in collaboration with Werribee Districts and Deer Park were keen to play in those games,” WRFL football operations manager David Newton said. “We thought there would be a greater likelihood of Anzac Day games this year given it falling on a Friday and it doesn’t affect a short turnaround or a long turnaround like a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Those clubs have taken the opportunity of playing the game the day before which is good.”
Deer Park will open the WRFL season next year. 105750 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI St Albans and Hoppers Crossing will also square off in a game on Good Friday. In Division Two, the season will open with Wyndhamvale and Sanctuary Lakes playing on a Friday night. With the Division Two season set to go 13 rounds before the league breaks into a three-tier set-up, Newton said the reaction from clubs had been great. “There was some consideration initially whether we would do the split now and have Division Two and Division Three and start as separate competitions next year,” Newton said. “This way it gives every club their opportunity to have their shot at Division Two. If they are serious
about it they have got 13 rounds to do so. “We haven’t actually had any clubs come back to us and say they are not happy with the move. I think all clubs have identified there were serious concerns about the level of competition last year and that has been happening for some time. It can only be a really good move for the league.” Also in Division Two, Tarneit will play North Sunshine in its first match in the club’s history while Braybrook and Albanvale will square off in an Anzac Day clash. The Division Two grand final will be played on either the sixth or seventh of September with the Division One grand final the following week.

Up to the challenge WESTERN Athletics has enjoyed another successful hit out against some of the best runners in the state. The club took to the Lakeside Athletics Track in Albert Park late last month for the State Relay Championships. With 21 teams competing, there was no shortage of outstanding results with six podium finishes for the club. Taking out gold were the women’s 50-plus 4x100m and women’s 40-plus 4x400m. Coming in second were the men’s 40-plus 4x400, men’s under-18 4x800m and women’s 40-plus 4x1500
metre. The women’s open medley came in third. Western Athletics committee member Phil Dunstone said it was a great day for the club. “We are a very strong distance running club and we are starting to build our sprinters more this year,” he said. “We compete weekly at regional level but this brings the whole state together. “This gives kids that experience of running against the best athletes in their age group in the state. I guess it is there to give us an idea of where our athletes are and where we maybe need to improve.” The good news didn’t
stop there for Western Athletics with the club’s open women’s 4x400m team qualifying for the special Zatopek event in December. Until then, athletes will continue to compete in the Athletics Victoria Shield in which the club is hoping to qualify as many teams as possible for the competition’s finals. “It has been a pretty good start to the AV Shield season,” Dunstone said. “Our junior teams are doing really well. “We will be focusing on week in week out competition and trying to get our teams in that first or second position on the ladder.”

GREAT to see Ben Ross (Werribee) and Cam Wood (Williamstown) given a second chance at an AFL career with the rookie draft last week. Cam spent one year in the VFL and made quite an impact with the Seagulls in his 20 games. Ben was delisted at the end of the 2011 season by North Melbourne. In fact, the week he was told he was out of a job, he continued to play for Werribee and kicked five goals just days after his sacking. His 2012 season produced a Liston Trophy and a top three finish in the Werribee best and fairest. He was overlooked by all AFL clubs and again produced a great season for Werribee finishing in the top three again. The move by Hawthorn came as a great but pleasant surprise to everyone at Avalon Airport Oval. By his own admission, he was immature when he was first drafted but he is more than ready this time around. I can tell you though, no one is looking forward to seeing him in Box Hill colours. SAD to hear of the passing of Paul Hollingsworth last week. Paul has been fighting cancer for a number of months and was a well-known local businessman and member of the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club where he was a former committee man. His dedication to the golf club, the football club, the fishing club and the sports club in general made him a very popular person around Hogans Rd. Paul was a genuine, friendly and intelligent man who will be sadly missed. My condolences to Viv, Stuart, Adam, Cameron and his many friends. It will not be the same not seeing him at games next football season. Paul outfitted my house with security doors a few years back and was exceptional in looking after me. RIP Paul unfortunately we won’t get to have that beer at Christmas, but we will all raise a glass in your honour. Cheers. IF anyone ever tells you that watching golf on television is not exciting, play them the final few holes of the Australian Open from last weekend with Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy. That was a finish for the ages. I don’t think I have ever willed a putt not to drop, but I so wanted Adam Scott to win. He didn’t and that is why sport is great viewing, because you never know what is going to happen. Adam Scott is the best thing to happen to Australian Golf since Greg Norman and the entire country has embraced him, which is why I was hoping Rory’s putt did not go in last Sunday. Fortunately, Adam already has a green jacket in his wardrobe, something the great White Shark could not do. FORMER Werribee captain Robbie Castello, who will play with Maribyrnong Park next year, will have his hands full off the park with the news that he and his wife Laura are expecting a baby next year. The Castello clan is already huge, but another one will be more than welcome. On a sad note, the passing of Elaine Schultz will touch the hearts of the many red, white and blue fans who have followed John Schultz. You could not meet a nicer man than John, and as you would expect his wife Elaine was exactly the same. I will miss her presence at Bulldogs functions like the East West Young Guns Dinner. A great lady, RIP ElaineCondolences to John and his family.
