CRIME in Hobsons Bay has declined, with the latest statistics revealing an improvement in a number of key areas. Victoria Police crime statistic for the September quarter released last week show a slight 1.8 per cent decrease in offences across the municipality since the same time last year. Overall crime dropped from 7621.2 offences in the September 2012 quarter to 7480.5 this year. The statistics reveal significant reductions in key areas including robbery which experienced a 30.7 per cent
drop, property damage saw an 8.3 per cent decrease, theft from motor vehicle was down 14 per cent and theft of motor vehicle 31.3 per cent. Areas that did not experience a decrease include assault excluding family violence, which rose by 19.6 per cent, assault increased by 16.9 as did burglary (residential) by 8.3 per cent. Meanwhile there has been a 2.7 per cent jump in offences recorded across Victoria. Hobsons Bay Police Inspector Richard Paterson said the significant reductions in crime had been achieved

TRANSITION Hobsons Bay is ready for strawberry season with the public invited to pick the berry best at a certified organic strawberry farm. The community organisation is holding its third annual strawberry run at Ladybird Organics, Melbourne’s only certified organic strawberry farm located in Keilor. Member Kate Leslie said the group will wait for a run of sunny days and then carpool to
the family owned and run farm to pick and enjoy the delicious seasonal fruit. “We’re sourcing organic strawberries locally and are able to feast on what is super seasonal,” she said. “It’s nice to have (an event) that is weather dependent, it puts you in touch with the season and weather.” Kate said they were expecting a strong crowd of strawberry pickers, with three carloads of eager pickers involved last year.
TWENTY vehicles were damaged in malicious acts across the municipality last financial year, new RACV figures show. RACV Insurance claims data reveals that 123 vehicles were damaged across the Western Suburbs between 1 July, 2012 and 30 June, 2013. Hobsons Bay was the municipality with the third most malicious damage in the west, with 20 incidents costing more than $75,000. Brimbank was most affected by malicious damage in the west with 37 incidents costing almost $100,000, this was followed by Wyndham with 35 incidents costing nearly $95,000. RACV General Manager Insurance Paul Northey said malicious damage to vehicles caused significant inconvenience to motorists and cost millions to repair. “Last year, RACV Insurance paid out more than $3.44 million to members whose vehicles had suffered malicious damage,” Mr Northey said. Mr Northey reminded RACV members and the public that taking a few simple steps to protect their vehicle could save them time and money. “With the average malicious damage claim costing $2,894, motorists should ensure they have adequate insurance cover to avoid a hefty vehicle repair bill.” “Of course, prevention is better than cure. One of the best preventative steps motorists can take to protect their vehicle is to park it off the street and where possible, in a secure garage. “If you must park on the street, try and park in a well-lit location with people frequently passing by, as this can act as a deterrent to opportunistic thieves and vandals.”
Local input for Melbourne plan By NICOLE VALICEK HOBSONS Bay City Council will make its voice heard in a discussion on the State Government’s long-term planning vision for Melbourne. The council has made a submission to the State Government’s draft Metropolitan Planning Strategy, known as Plan Melbourne. The plan will provide the strategic impetus for future planning decisions concerning housing, employment, infrastructure and the environment in Melbourne. The council’s submission includes the provision of affordable housing, the need to protect industrial areas from inappropriate encroachment and the need to further protect the urban growth boundary. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the council welcomed the strategy, but wanted to see a number of concerns specific to the municipality addressed. She said council was concerned over the plan entailing any cost shifting that would place further stress on the council resources and revenue streams. Drug-driving higher AN INCREASING number of Hobsons Bay drivers have been caught drug-driving in the municipality over the last 12 months. Statistics released by Victoria Police last week revealed 16 drivers in Hobsons Bay were caught with illicit drugs in their system across the 2012-’13 financial year. The largest number of offenders (six) caught for drug driving were aged between 30 to 34 and three were caught in each of the 18-24 and 35-39 age group. One to two drug driving penalty notices were issues for all other age
groups including those between 2529, 40-44 and 55-59. Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Robert Hill said drug driving was increasing across Victoria and police needed to intervene now. “Our goal is to influence and change the culture of road users to create a safer road system for all Victorians,� he said. One in 11 drivers caught as part of an Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) blitz in November had drugs in their system, which is nearly double the yearly average of detections.
“Victoria Police conduct around 3.5 to 4 million alcohol screening tests a year and 42,000 roadside drug tests,� Asst Comm Hill said. In Victoria in 2012 one in 20 drivers were confirmed to have one or more of the illicit drugs present while driving and one in 238 drivers were found driving with a BAC in excess of the prescribed amount. “In 2005 drugs of all types were present in almost 40 per cent of drivers killed on Victorian roads, with illicit drugs present in 24.4 per cent of drivers.� “Disturbingly, the presence of drugs of all types in Victorian
drivers killed in 2010 and 2011 increased dramatically, returning to the levels seen in 2005.� He said the lessons learned in implementing a successful alcohol impaired driving program are now being applied to combat the drug impaired driving issue. But Operation RAID results show there is still more work to be done in this area. “While drink driving remains one of the biggest threats on our roads, we recognise drug driving is a significant issue and needs to be a major focus for Victoria Police and our road safety partners.�

Couple takes on mission to help orphans By NICOLE VALICEK WHEN Alex and Wil volunteered at an orphanage in Peru last year they had no idea the impact it would have on their lives. Newport man Wil Jamieson, 20 and partner Alex Teeuwsen, 21 from Altona North ventured to South America last year and decided to do some volunteer work while there. After doing some research the pair decided to spend a week in Cusco, Peru volunteering at an orphanage through company Maximo Nivel. The two spent a week volunteer-
ing at The Hogar Maria Salome Serro Boys Orphanage. Alex, who is an advocate for social justice and volunteering, said while over there they discovered funding for the orphanage was sadly lacking and provided mainly from the volunteer visits. On their return Alex and Wil wanted to make a difference and raise money to send to the orphanage for the kids to go to school. “At the moment the principal of the orphanage was asking for funding to spend the kids to school,� Alex said.
“The principal is very humble and has never asked the volunteer company for anything, that’s where the idea came from.� Last week Alex and Wil organised a fund-raiser in the hope of raising more than $7000 for the orphanage. “For three months of hard work to change these kids’ life, you can’t put a price on that in time and effort,� Alex said. “100 per cent of the money raised is going to the cause we’re going to make sure of that even if we have to hold onto money for a year so we can go back over there.�
Wil said he was inspired to help after he saw the happiness of the children despite their situation. “We wanted to help them as much as we could after seeing they were so happy in life,� he said. “We want to help them as much as we can to send them to school and help them get a job.� Alex said she wanted other young people to know that you could help if you put your mind to it. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve seen it or not, you know what’s going on overseas and you can do something to help.�

Reserve under council wings By NICOLE VALICEK HOBSONS Bay City Council has adopted the Fearon Reserve master plan which will guide its development over the next decade. The master plan was adopted during last week’s ordinary meeting following a public exhibition period where 10 submissions were received. The master plan will guide the development of the Williamstown reserve over the next 10 years. Works identified include improving the condition of the turf surfaces throughout the reserve to address poor quality playing fields and the open
space areas; upgrading drainage; infilling of specific low lying areas to improve the quality; and ensuring the continued multi-use of the areas within the reserve. Six submissions supported the draft master plan, two did not and the remaining two did not indicate support either way. As a result of the submissions, the master plan was amended for consistency in parking in Osborne St. Many of the specific items raised within submissions will be further considered through design development phases. The timing and priority of
future works relating to this master plan is subject to an overview of the long-term capital works program priorities. During the meeting, Cr Hemphill moved a motion to consider an installation of a footpath from Osborne St along the Westside of the football oval to the football pavilions. He also added that planning specifically includes drainage to that area to make it safer. “There is a problem with the foot traffic in that area designated as a run and here’s an ideal opportunity to fix the problem.”

THE Substation’s newest exhibition explores what can be discovered when a group of artists uncover the topic of “Modern Ruin”. “Modern Ruin” brings together 10 artists who explore through their practices decay and detritus, form and disintegration and historic failures within the context of the modern ruin. The group exhibition, curated by Michael Brennan and Aaron Martin, uses all of The Substation’s exhibition spaces and includes a billboard
exhibition outside the venue. “It brings together a diverse group of artists all interested in the idea of what happens to objects and spaces when their useful life has come to the end and the stories that are revealed through that process,” curator Michael said. “(It explores the) romantic notion of ruined castles, when you see old buildings and poses questions like why is that more interesting than a warehouse smashed up 20 years ago by Bobcats as opposed to something degraded.”

He said the exhibition was looking at the value people put on things and how value changed when use-by dates expired. The exhibition is a feature of the Big West Festival. In his installation artist, Marcello Guardigli documents an abandoned warehouse turned skate park that was smashed by a Bobcat and left in rubble, using black and white photographs. A NEW event will encourage artists to utilise the natural environment in Hobsons Bay as inspiration to create their work. “Draw and Explore - Pathways into Nature” will be held on Sunday 15 December at the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary in Williamstown. Local artists Chris Rockley and Nancy Land will lead participants in a day of observation and drawing from afar and up close. The event is an initiative of One Million Steps and Transition Hobsons Bay. Transition Hobsons Bay initiating group member John Lawrence said the event would hopefully be the birth of a larger environmental art program.
“The aim of the program is to build a greater awareness of the local environments and how we should value and protect them,” He said this would be achieved “by using the arts as a way of exploring a particular local natural site to gauge that understanding by getting people to look more carefully, to think more deeply, to understand the local environment and what a treasure it is.” Mr Lawrence said the first event is open to anyone and everyone, regardless of artistic ability. “It’s a great opportunity for local people from the Hobsons Bay area to learn more about their local natural environment, to enjoy an arts activity with

Shed has broad appeal By NICOLE VALICEK THE IMPORTANT role that the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed plays in the community has been recognised by a prestigious and well-deserved award. The Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed was presented with an Australia wide award for “Outstanding Contribution to the Community”. Hobson’s Bay Men’s Shed secretary Laraine Hill said the members are very proud to have received the recognition for the part they play in their local community. “The Shed provides not just a social aspect to the members
but also the facilities to achieve personal goals,” she said. And word is catching on. The shed was established five years ago with 30 members and today they have more than 200. Men’s Shed president Colin Dyall said the committee and the members will “value this award”. The Shed is open Monday to Friday for a wide range of interested groups including woodwork, metalwork, technology, cycling, aged care/disabled, photography, plastic model, musical instrument making and a motoring enthusiast group. “We welcome all interested

persons (including women) in our community to pay us a visit and see for themselves what we can offer and how they can also give a little back by way of assisting with some of our groups,” Mrs Hill said. She said looking to the future the shed will only go “onwards and upwards”. The award was presented at the Australian Men’s Shed Association dinner held in Ballarat in late October. The official unveiling of the award will take place this Friday 6 December with local dignitaries in attendance.

Sharing real life lessons By NICOLE VALICEK MELISSA Haber from Altona Meadows learned the valuable life lesson recently that ‘if you listen you might be surprised’. The 21-year-old Swinburne University student recently participated in a three-month internship program called Celebrate Living History. The focus of the internship, created by Frankston resident Bev Wilkinson in March this year, is to bridge the gap between young and old with students connecting with a senior to learn about and document their life story. “It all started as one idea arising from interviewing seniors within the area of Frankston for an exhibition
showcasing stories of local seniors,” Ms Wilkinson said. “I realised if I wasn’t there to document these stories, one day they would be lost forever.” “This activity is an opportunity for generations who ordinarily would not socialise with each other to connect, share skills and most of all have a good yarn.” Melissa chose to write a story about her grandmother Judy Roulston that was published on the project website. “My grandma had very interesting things to say about World War II, how she moved to Australia,” she said. “The way she met her husband I thought was really sweet.”
“I thought it was great getting senior citizens to talk about things they otherwise keep to themselves is such a good idea.” “There so many stories hidden behind them it’s a good opportunity for younger people to talk to older people. It’s good all-around really.” Melissa said the experience made her think about senior citizens in a new light and to remember that “you don’t know until you ask”. Ms Wilkinson wants to establish an annual publication showcasing the wonderful stories that the students have captured. CELEBRATIONS on the victory by parishioners to save St Stephen’s Church at Williamstown North were short-lived with the group preparing for another battle. The Uniting Church Synod reversed its decision to sell the church, adjacent hall and two tennis courts at 179 Melbourne Rd two weeks ago. The decision came following a public meeting held by the Williamstown North parish on 11 November in which a resolution to “wholeheartedly support” Supreme Court action against 20 members of the synod, who were trying to sell the church and adjacent hall. The church was to be sold to help repay a $56 million debt incurred by last year’s collapse of Acacia College at Mernda North. The congregation and community fought back and won but are now reading themselves to prevent the sale of the historic manse, located at 177 Melbourne Rd. The manse was not exempt from sale. St Stephen’s Manse was designed by John M Anderson and constructed in 1890. The Gothic Revival villa was noted in the Hobsons Bay Heritage Study 2006. Save St Stephen’s convenor and elder Iris Whitehurst said the local congregation faced an uphill battle to stop the sale following a recent conversation with the UCA General Secretary, but would not stop fighting. “I’m not really confident that the property won’t go for sale, that is still a possibility but we’re still going to try every avenue which were doing to stop the sale,” she said. The manse has already been listed by agents for sale by auction on Tuesday 10 December at 6pm. Mrs Whitehurst said local parishioners were disappointed that the Synod did not contact them about the sale in writing, instead they found out about it through the tenant. She said the manse was redeveloped in 1995 to the Synod specifications for the purpose of housing a minister. “For 130 years it has been the church house for a minister that’s why the house is there,” she said. She said no minister lived there at present, the land at the back of the house was used for recreation purposes and is currently being let, with the income used to maintain the property and hall. “It subsidises the people and community groups who get the hall for free,” she said. “It would be hard for us to maintain the hall and the church as well as we are doing now (without the manse).” A spokesperson from the Uniting Church said the Synod resolved that the St Stephen;s manse remained suitable for divestment but that the church, hall, storage shed and tennis courts were not. They said the divestment property choices have been made and the Synod would not change its position.

Charity under hammer By NICOLE VALICEK WITH the help of almost 2100 vehicles donations from across Australia since 2007, the Kids Under Cover Donate Your Car Program has raised $1 million. The money raised will go toward the charity’s work of preventing youth homelessness. A celebration was held at Manheim in Altona recently, to mark the occasion. The local car auctions are the Platinum Partner of the Donate Your Car program which ensures 100 per cent of the sale proceeds go directly towards the prevention of youth homelessness. CEO OF Kids Under Cover Jo Swift said vehicle donors can be assured that their unwanted vehicle will be put to very good use.
“The Donate Your Car program has been very successful for Kids Under Cover - almost doubling the number of car donations every year,” Ms Swift said. She said since 1989, Kids Under Cover has been able to support more than 2800 young people who were at risk of becoming homeless. “We are obviously thrilled with the success of the program over its seven years and how many young people we have been able to help with the money raised,” Mrs Swift said. “However, there is still a long way to go to eradicate youth homelessness in this country and so we urge any individuals and companies to please continue to donate to the cause.”

Feet fit for summer SUMMER means warm weather, holidays and increased outdoor activities, which also means more time on your feet, often barefoot or in thongs or slip-on shoes. This can take a toll on your feet and legs. So what can you do to look after your feet and legs this summer? Bare feet in public locations, like swimming pools and showers, can lead to infections. So keep bare feet to when you’re at home, on safe surfaces or relaxing. Always wear appropriate exercise shoes Even when it’s hot, you still need to exercise in appropriate shoes. Many people take long walks in summer, but doing this barefoot, or in thongs or slip-ons can be very stressful to your feet and legs, with muscles having to do a lot of extra work to accommodate inappropriate footwear. Fighting cats are not fun home SUMMER time means it is cat breeding season yet again. This means litters of abandoned kittens and stray cats as well as a rise in neighbourhood cats fighting. Cat bite abscesses will require a visit to the vet for a course of antibiotics and pain relief or possibly even surgical drainage. Unfortunately, the viral diseases associated with fighting may be with your cat for life, particularly Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV affects the immune system causing fever, weight loss, oral disease and chronic infections in years to come. Cat owners should discuss with their vet the best ways to protect their cat from fighting, with
an indoor lifestyle being the best recommendation. Now is also the time to ensure both male and female cats have been desexed. Female cats can get pregnant from as young as four or five months of age, so should not be allowed outside until after their desexing operation. Desexing male cats will help prevent fighting as well as reduce spraying of urine around the house. There are a huge number of kittens and cats in our area not being responsibly owned and to address this problem the Wyndham Council is promoting desexing, microchipping and registration at a reduced fee via our clinic. Roos gain edge over Bulldogs By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater’s impressive run of form has hit a snag with the Bulldogs going down to the Greenvale Kangaroos by 20 runs in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. Played over Saturday and Sunday, the contest looked like a missmatch on paper with Footscray occupying top spot on the ladder while Greenvale had struggled in the first half of the season. But all that was forgotten when the Kangaroos won the toss and elected to bat. The Greenvale opening pair of Eric Ghasperidis and Jake Martin handled the inform Jake Haberfield well on their way to a 56-run stand for the first wicket. Finally, it was first change bowler Lucas Dredge who made the breakthrough for Footscray. Dredge re-
moved Martin and added a second victim in quick succession to keep the contest on an even keel. Both sides fought hard for the remainder of the afternoon as the Greenvale total continued to rise. Despite being 9/221, the Kangaroos managed to claw their way to 280 to claim day-one honours. In reply, the Footscray innings was littered with contributors however, no individual batsman was able to make a big score. Dean Russ, Anthony Barton, Travis Dean, Dylan Kight, Shanuka Dissanayaka and Michael Hill all made between 21 and 44. Despite the tail wagging through Haberfield and Hamish Winter-Irving, the total proved too great and Footscray was all out for 260 in the 82nd over. The result sees the Bulldogs slip to a 6-2 win/loss record for the season.

Sides short on big hitters STRONG batting wasn’t really the order of the day at Ray Davies Oval in the VTCA North Division on Saturday. It was there where Laverton stumbled to 178 against Keilor Park in 66 overs. Brent Sheean and Matthew O’Brien both led the way for the visitors throughout the day, scoring 51 and 49 respectively. But other than those contributions Laverton struggled, with every other hitter failing to reach anything higher than 20. Dilshan Udage Kankanamage was the main enforcer for Keilor Park, claiming three Laverton wickets for the innings. Keilor Park was then given 14 overs to bat through at the end of the day’s play and managed to get 14 runs on the board. However the home team will resume its pursuit of 179 with only nine wickets in hand this weekend, after James Baker scored a breakthrough late on Saturday to finish with figures of 1/5 and three maidens from seven overs.

Cricket club honouring a local legend By LIAM TWOMEY THERE is no other way to describe it, Morris McDonald was a legend of the Altona North Cricket Club. After joining the club in 1947, McDonald remained at Altona North as a player and then an official for the next 63 years. He played a staggering 277 games, was a member of two premiership winning teams and started the club’s first junior and ladies sides. At the age of 91, McDonald recently passed away. To ensure he always remains a part of Altona North, the club renamed its ground the Morris G. McDonald Oval. Club president Greg Frydas said McDonald was a hero of the club. “Our number one oval has been renamed the Morris G. McDonald Oval,” he said. “We had a naming ceremony and his ashes got scattered on the ground on that same morning. “Morris was actually handed the keys when Crofts Reserve was established and was involved in the club for well over 50 years. “He is an icon of the club, having spent 25 years as president and he really put his heart and soul into it. “It is great for the ground to be named after him.” Coming off a grand final in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s North Division last season,

a one club player but circumstances didn’t work out that way,” Frydas said. “To come back and to be still able to play 200 games at the club I grew up at and the club I played my juniors at is a great feeling. “It is a great honour to play 200 games for this club.”
A COMBINED 14 wickets were claimed for just 122 runs between Sunshine United and Newport-Digman in the VTCA West B1 competition on Saturday. Sunshine United was sent in to bat first on its home deck at Selwyn Park, which after 57.3 overs looked to be a very wise decision by Newport-Digman captain Matthew Shiell. The Sunshine United top order capitulated to lose three wickets for just 10 runs before they were able to steady the ship, albeit temporarily. Newport-Digman’s Matthew Mason sent shutters through the Sunshine United order on his way to a very tidy 5/17 and five maidens from 14 and a half overs, helping to restrict the host to an all-out 80 halfway through the 58th over. Despite their established advantage with the ball, NewportDigman crumbled even harder than Sunshine United did with the bat earlier in the day, succumbing to a measly total of 4/22. Another 59 runs are required for victory this weekend. THE eyes of the Western Suburbs were locked on TAC Cup side the Western Jets and VFL sides Werribee and Williamstown ahead of last month’s National and Rookie AFL drafts. While the three sides combined to promote four players into the game’s elite competition, it was another Western Suburbs product that snuck under the radar. Hoppers Crossing’s Michael Luxford was also drafted by Geelong as a Category B rookie. Luxford has been well known in the West as one of the hottest young basketball talents in Australia. After making his first Victorian basketball team at age 11, the teenager has been a regular fixture in all state representative sides since. In 2012 he was also selected in Australia’s under-17 team which competed in the FIBA under-17 World Championship. With the help of Luxford, the team went on to claim a silver medal. After a successful 2013 which saw him named the Most Valuable Player in the under-23 Big V League while playing for Werribee, Luxford has elected to try his chances at AFL rather than pursue a career on the court. “It was an enormous decision for Michael and his family to go down a different path and choose footy,” Cats recruiting manager Stephen Wells said. “Michael is a very talented sportsman, a high achiever in basketball and school and after plenty of trials with him we can see genuine potential.” Luxford will fulfil his prior basketball commitments which include representing his secondary school, Caulfield Grammar, at next week’s national schools basketball competition and representing Victoria in the under-20 team next February at the National State Championship in Perth. “The club has been very lenient and fantastic in allowing me to go back and fulfil my prior basketball commitments, I’m very grateful,” Luxford said.

In form and in demand By LIAM TWOMEY AFTER just one season at Williamstown, Cameron Wood is back in the AFL system following his selection by Carlton in last week’s rookie draft. Wood will be reunited with former coach Michael Malthouse at the Blues. In his first stint at the AFL, the 204cm Wood was drafted by the Brisbane Lions with the 18th pick in the 2004 national draft. After 16 games with the Lions, he was traded to Collingwood where he stayed on the Magpies’ list for five seasons and played in 48 games. “It is starting to sink in now that I am here,” Wood said at his first official press conference as a Blue. “My head has been going a million miles an hour for the last 24 hours. I’ve been getting messages and calls from probably everyone I’ve ever met. Everyone is pretty excited. My mum, she has texted me about 45 times. I’m still in shock. “I spoke to Shane Rogers on Friday night. He just rang me, it was a random number (and I) didn’t answer it, but got the voicemail. I listened to it and thought it was a prank. I Googled Shane Rogers to make sure he was the recruiting manager at Carlton.” Wood played in 20 matches for the Seagulls in the 2013 season and was one of the standout ruckmen in the VFL competition. He kicked 11 goals and was named in the Williamstown’s best players on 10 occasions including two of the club’s three finals. Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon said the club was delighted to see Wood picked up. “It’s great reward for him and recognition of his form throughout the year. In his own words Cam had his most consistent (season) to date and established himself as one of the best VFL-listed ruckmen in the competition.” “Cam was extremely popular with his team-mates and will be sorely missed, but we’re very excited to have another player taken after our success last year in the rookie draft. It reflects well on our club and our environment having been able to give our players opportunities at the next level.” Wood joins a growing list of players drafted into the AFL system from the Seagulls in recent years. The 2012 rookie draft saw Brett Goodes and Jack Frost end up on AFL lists while former Williamstown player Dane Rampe was also selected.

By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE continued its golden draft run after Ben Ross was picked up by Hawthorn last week. Ross was selected at pick number 57 in Wednesday’s rookie draft. “We are absolutely thrilled for Ben,” Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch said. “He has stuck at it and worked incredibly hard at VFL level. He won the Liston Trophy last year. There wasn’t an opportunity forthcoming then and again, credit to him he could have walked away but he wants to play footy at the highest level he possibly can. “He stuck at it and the opportunity came his way.” Ross played in 21 matches for the Tigers in 2013 and was named in the club’s best players on eight occasions. Speaking about his club’s rookie draft selections, Hawthorn recruiting manager Graham Wright said on the Hawks’ website, they had their eye on Ross for some time after two impressive seasons in the VFL. “He played more half back and wing and we really liked the way he developed there as well and we know he can play a number of roles,” Wright said. “He can play wing, half forward and on ball but we know he can go to half back as well. He’s a good user of the ball, has good endurance, good speed so he brings a lot to the table, it’s just a matter of where the coaches want to slot him in.”

ST ALBANS will host Deer Park in the traditional opening to the 2013 Western Region Football League season. The pair, which both qualified for finals this year, will play a standalone Friday night fixture on 4 April. That won’t be the only marquee game of round one with Werribee Districts playing its first match in the WRFL under lights against Hoppers Crossing on the Saturday night. Another highlight on the fixture, which was released last week, included two Division One Anzac Day games involving Sunshine squaring off against Werribee Districts and Albion meeting Deer Park. “We put out the opportunity for clubs to submit requests and both Sunshine and Albion in collaboration with Werribee Districts and Deer Park were keen to play in those games,” WRFL football operations manager David Newton said. “We thought there would be a greater likelihood of Anzac Day games this year given it falling on a Friday and it doesn’t affect a short turnaround or a long turnaround like a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Those clubs have taken the opportunity of playing the game the day before which is good.”

In Division Two, the season will open with Wyndhamvale and Sanctuary Lakes playing on a Friday night. With the Division Two season set to go 13 rounds before the league breaks into a three-tier set-up, Newton said the reaction from clubs had been great. “There was some consideration initially whether we would do the split now and have Division Two and Division Three and start as separate competitions next year,” Newton said. “This way it gives every club their opportunity to have their shot at Division Two. If they are serious
about it they have got 13 rounds to do so. “We haven’t actually had any clubs come back to us and say they are not happy with the move. I think all clubs have identified there were serious concerns about the level of competition last year and that has been happening for some time. It can only be a really good move for the league.” Also in Division Two, Tarneit will play North Sunshine in its first match in the club’s history while Braybrook and Albanvale will square off in an Anzac Day clash. The Division Two grand final will be played on either the sixth or seventh of September with the Division One grand final the following week.

Club backs youth By ADEM SARICAOGLU ALTONA will not have a senior women’s team in Big V basketball in 2014. In 2013 the Gators’ Division One women finished last on the table and could only muster two wins in 18 games. Altona director of coaching Randy Shanklin, who led the team this season, admitted a lack of numbers was a factor in the decision to send the team back to the Youth League. However, Shanklin made it clear that wasn’t the be all and end all. “Numbers does have something to do with it but it’s more about the experience,” Shanklin said. “We tried to do our best with what we had last season, but the girls are 21-years-old going up against girls 28 or 29. “The experience difference was just way too much and
especially coming from Youth League, even though we did well to get to the grand final the year before, it’s just like jumping up two different leagues. “So it was just more based on that than anything and our depth in numbers is in our youth girls, so we decided to go that way.” The 2013 season also marked the first time in six years neither of Altona’s men or women got to the finals. For Shanklin, it was important to re-instil a winning culture back to the club after its disappointing 2013 campaign. “It’s just something we had to do,” Shanklin said. “It was a change for one season of a culture that we weren’t used to. “We weren’t used to losing, we weren’t used to getting pounded by 30 or 40 points in games and really not being rel-
evant in the league, except for those couple of times that we did compete against the top teams. “So it really depends on how competitive we are. We would’ve stayed in Division One this year if we’d been more competitive.” Shanklin said he has floated the idea fielding a women’s team in Division Two. However it seems more likely the Gators will not have senior women for at least the next 12 months. “That’s (Division Two) always still an option and it’s something we may still consider,” Shanklin said. “But regardless, we’re only going to have one team. “If there’s a possibility to change we might take a look at it and go to Division Two, but the Youth League is more likely at the moment.”
Up to the challenge By LIAM TWOMEY WESTERN Athletics has enjoyed another successful hit out against some of the best runners in the state. The club took to the Lakeside Athletics Track in Albert Park late last month for the State Relay Championships. With 21 teams competing, there was no shortage of outstanding results with six podium finishes for the club. Taking out gold were the women’s 50-plus 4x100m and women’s 40-plus 4x400m. Coming in second were the men’s 40-plus 4x400, men’s under-18 4x800m and women’s 40plus 4x1500 metre. The women’s open medley came in third. Western Athletics committee member Phil Dunstone said it was a great day for the club. “We are a very strong distance running club and we are starting to build our sprinters more this year,” he said. “We compete weekly at regional level but this brings the whole state together. “This gives kids that experience of running against the best athletes in their age group in the state. I guess it is there to give us an idea of where our athletes are and where we maybe need to improve.” The good news didn’t stop there for Western Athletics with the club’s open women’s 4x400m team qualifying for the special Zatopek event in December.

Welcoming a second chance GREAT to see Ben Ross (Werribee) and Cam Wood (Williamstown) given a second chance at an AFL career with the rookie draft last week. Cam spent one year in the VFL and made quite an impact with the Seagulls in his 20 games. Ben was delisted at the end of the 2011 season by North Melbourne. In fact, the week he was told he was out of a job, he continued to play for Werribee and kicked five goals just days after his sacking. His 2012 season produced a Liston Trophy and a top three finish in the Werribee best and fairest. He was overlooked by all AFL clubs and again produced a great season for Werribee finishing in the top three again. The move by Hawthorn came as a great but pleasant surprise to everyone at Avalon Airport Oval. By his own admission, he was immature when he was first drafted but he is more than ready this time around. I can tell you though, no one is looking forward to seeing him in Box Hill colours.

SAD to hear of the passing of Paul Hollingsworth last week. Paul has been fighting cancer for a number of months and was a well-known local businessman and member of the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club where he was a former committee man. His dedication to the golf club, the football club, the fishing club and the sports club in general made him a very popular person around Hogans Rd. Paul was a genuine, friendly and intelligent man who will be sadly missed. My condolences to Viv, Stuart, Adam, Cameron and his many friends. It will not be the same not seeing him at games next football season. Paul outfitted my house with security doors a few years back and was exceptional in looking after me. RIP Paul unfortunately we won’t get to have that beer at Christmas, but we will all raise a glass in your honour. Cheers. IF anyone ever tells you that watching golf on television is not exciting, play them the final few holes of the Australian Open from last weekend with Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy. That was a finish for the ages. I don’t think I have ever willed a putt not to drop, but I so wanted Adam Scott to win. He didn’t and that is why sport is great viewing, because you never know what is going to happen. Adam Scott is the best thing to happen to Australian Golf since Greg Norman and the entire country has embraced him, which is why I was hoping Rory’s putt did not go in last Sunday. Fortunately, Adam already has a green jacket in his wardrobe, something the great White Shark could not do. FORMER Werribee captain Robbie Castello, who will play with Maribyrnong Park next year, will have his hands full off the park with the news that he and his wife Laura are expecting a baby next year. The Castello clan is already huge, but another one will be more than welcome. On a sad note, the passing of Elaine Schultz will touch the hearts of the many red, white and blue fans who have followed John Schultz. You could not meet a nicer man than John, and as you would expect his wife Elaine was exactly the same. I will miss her presence at Bulldogs functions like the East West Young Guns Dinner. A great lady, RIP ElaineCondolences to John and his family.

BASEBALL fans were treated to a highly entertaining Australian Baseball League shootout at Altona’s Melbourne Ballpark on Sunday. However the majority of the crowd went home disappointed with the final score, which read 18-13 in favour of the Canberra Cavalry over the Melbourne Aces by game’s end. The result ultimately tied the four-game series between the two which began with a 4-3 Melbourne win on Friday night. In the first of two games on Saturday, the Aces again managed to scrape home 2-0, before dropping the following fixture 5-1 to a very clean Cavalry outfit. But, for the neutral fan at least, the best was saved for last. Both the Aces and Cavalry made a mockery of the opposition pitching to combine for a whopping 42 hits, resulting in a 31-run thriller that almost came down to the wire on Sunday. The visitors didn’t take long to set the tone for the day, scoring four runs in the opening inning before RBIs from Jared Schlehuber and Josh Davies made it 4-2 at the top of the second. After two, the Aces held a 5-4 lead courtesy of another big Schlehuber play - a three-run homer with two out. Canberra then managed to level the score 8-8 after the third inning and snatch the lead back with another run at the top of the fourth, before holding onto its slender buffer through the next two innings.
