Albury Wodonga’s largest circulating newspaper

Indi goes to Canberra The Cathy McGowan juggernaut rolled into the nation’s capital yesterday to hear the Member for Indi’s maiden speech in the House of Representatives. The 200-strong orange army was in a festive spirit as it celebrated the historic day. FOR DETAILS TURN TO PAGES 4 AND 5

Unsaintly groove By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A POPULAR Albury night club has been named as one of the “most violent venues” in New South Wales according to the State Government. Groove Saint, on Dean Street, was ranked as one of the 21 worst venues in the state for an excessive number of violent incidents, according to information compiled by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOSCAR) and released by Minister for Hospitality George Souris last week. There were 12 violent incidents recorded at Groove Saint for the 2012/13 financial year, with the venue now classified as a ‘Level 2’ premises for which specific restrictions will now apply. As of 8 December, Groove Saint must comply with special conditions which include ceasing alcohol service 30 minutes before closing time, no glass or breakable containers after midnight and alcohol time-outs or the provision of free water and food for 10 minutes every hour after midnight. Groove Saint, new to the violent venues list, will also be required to keep a detailed incident register. Albury Police Chief Inspector Kim Sorensen said while the statistics left nothing to interpretation, they didn’t necessarily mean crime at Groove Saint, and in Albury, had reached a dire level. “I wouldn’t want people thinking

Groove Saint was ranked as one of the most violent venues in New South Wales by the State Government. we have a hub of criminality here,” he said. “They just had a few more incidents than last year.” Insp Sorensen supported the restrictions to be introduced at Groove Saint this month and said similar conditions had been used at bars in Newcastle to great effect. “I’ve come from Newcastle which is notorious for its night life violence and these types of restrictions have been successful up there, such as prohibiting glass,” he said. Mr Souris said the NSW Government will be seeking legislative amendments to the Liquor Act to allow for special powers to impose conditions earlier in the evening if a

venue is considered high-risk before midnight. “Currently, a number of the scheme’s conditions only apply after midnight but this amendment would aim to ensure that venues, including country venues that have earlier closing times, can still be effectively targeted with conditions if violent incidents and high risk trading periods are occurring earlier,” he said. Ivy, in the Sydney CBD, was ranked as the most violent premises in the state and classified as a Level 1 venue, with 26 incidents reported for the year. Albury Wodonga News Weekly contacted management at Groove Saint but they declined to comment.

The punters Newitt AMONG a sea of smiling faces at Sunday’s Wodonga Gold Cup, champion jockey Craig Newitt sported the widest grin. Under blue skies, Newitt blew his rivals away with victory in the main race, three other wins and another three placings. It was a masterclass from the Group One winning hoop, who missed the start on Stratigraphy before giving the Mick Price-trained fiveyear-old a perfect run in the cup. More on pages 2-3.

WITH an impressive line-up of both entrants and judges, Wodonga Gold Cup Fashions on The Field has been applauded as a roaring success. “It’s definitely improved each year, the crowds have been getting better and better and the quality of the entrants is getting much better,” Wodonga Gold Cup fashion advisor Sarah Crothers said. “One of our judges, Sophie Van Den Akker, mentioned the outfits are up there with the quality of entrants at Flemington, which is really good to see.” Organisers described Ms Van Den Akker’s contribution as a judge as a ‘massive score’ to boost popularity for the day. “She’s one of Australia’s leading models and she’s very busy - she basically spends six to eight months of her life overseas so it was great to be able to get her here,” Ms Crothers said. “She’s stunning and lots of people were getting autographs and taking photos with her. It helped to attract a different type of crowd.” Other judges included Edwin Jupp, the male ambassador for Country Racing, and fashion styler and blogger Candice Lee who styled Ms Van Den Akker in an impressive black cut-out dress and fascinator for the day. Lady of The Day was by far the most hotly contended category and went to Ally Ellis who co-ordinated a large purple fascinator with a garden print A-line dress. “The Lady of The Day was really impressive,” Ms Crothers said. “There were about three heats in the end, so about 30 girls, and they had to do a couple of final heats because the judges couldn’t decide who to choose.” The Millinery Award went to local milliner Peta Schieffer for her delicate canary-yellow, floral fascinator. The Marquee Award was handed to Susan Delcour for her bold retro printed dress and tan accessories. Finally, Gentleman of the Day was awarded to one of the more stand-out contestants, Dan Sawyer. “At first, the male side of the competition was a little bit lagging, the guys tend to be a bit more shy about getting up until they see the prizes,” Ms Crothers said. “We had about two on stage and when we spoke about some of the prizes we had about 10 on stage in 30 seconds. “The Gentleman of The Day had some very colourful pants by a brand called Loudmouth. “He was very entertaining, I think his character helped get him over the line.” Wodonga Race Club were able to raise over $10,000 in prizes thanks to the local business community. “It was really pleasing to have all our local sponsors involved,” Ms Crothers said. “We’re exorbitantly grateful for all the input they had and I think they’re all on board to try and make it a bigger event for next year.”

Stratigraphy picks his way to the front in the Wodonga Cup.

Picture: SARAH MEREDITH

Stratigraphy’s strategy By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT WAS a race of strategy for Wodonga Gold Cup winning jockey Craig Newitt, after the slow start he described as ‘a blessing in disguise.’ On board the Mick Price-trained Stratigraphy, Newitt missed the start and found himself at the back of the 14-horse pack. In a show of true finesse, Newitt manoeuvred Stratigraphy through the pack to defeat Grand Sai Wan by 3/4 of a length and take home gold in the $80,000 Wodonga Gold Cup.

“It was a great ride,” Racing Wodonga general manager Tom O’Connor said. “Newitt’s group one experience showed out in a few races - he rode four winners, so it was fantastic to have him on course. He certainly added to the meet and showed his brilliance on the horse.” This was the first Wodonga Cup win for Caufield trainer Mick Price, with the stable represented by Wangaratta trainer John Ledger. Sunday’s victory was also a highlight for Stratigraphy’s 24-start career, taking home his biggest pay-packet yet of

$48,000, taking his total winnings to almost $200,000. The weather made for a fantastic summer meeting which organisers suspect may have drawn larger crowds than last year. “It was a great day - fantastic weather,” Mr O’Connor said. “We had plenty of entertainment and activities on course which the Albury Wodonga public got involved in. “We’re still working through figures, but I’d say it would be on par with last year, maybe even slightly up on 2012.”

INDI Liberals have picked themselves up off the mat and are already preparing for round two with Independent Cathy McGowan. The Liberals have opened an office in Wangaratta in a bid to win back the federal seat from Ms McGowan, who defeated Sophie Mirabella in a knife-edge election earlier this year. The shock result not only saw the Liberals lose one of their most senior parliamentarians, but also one of their heartland seats that could be crucial in future close elections. Liberal Party state director Damien Mantach said the region was crucial to the Liberal Party. “It is appropriate for us to have an office in Indi so that members of the community can connect with us locally,” he said. “The general public will be able to access information about Abbott Government policies, contribute ideas and link up across the electorate.” Karen Rourke has been appointed as “field officer” for the Ovens Street office.

McGowan the By DANNY BUTTLER IN A celebration the like of which has never before been seen in Parliament House, Cathy McGowan and her supporters changed the colour of politics in the nation’s capital. Arriving en masse for the Indi Independent’s maiden speech to the House of Representatives on Monday, the orange clad supporters made enough noise to have security guards preparing for an angry protest. But the mood was festive not fiery, as the 200-strong McGowan army gathered to hear her first address to the

House. In a comprehensive address, Ms McGowan said she would; “share a story - about myself, about my electorate of Indi, the power of community to reinvent itself, and I will tell you about Voice for Indi, the rural community movement that brought me to this place.” With two of the three public galleries filled with friends, family and supporters, it was one of the best received addresses to the Parliament in some time. Ms McGowan said her first duty to the people of Indi was to find out what they wanted her to do for them.

“I will listen: I will listen to the older people who have lost touch with their grandchildren, the teenagers who suffer with mental health issues (and their families), the people who know what it is like to feel hardship, adversity and yet get on top of it.” She ended her speech quoting from Margaret Mead, another woman who sought to bring change to the world around her. “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Cathy McGowan shares a special moment with supporters.111521_01

WHILE Christmas is known as the time to be kinder to our fellow man, spare a thought for the planet. Over the festive season, we eat, drink, party and buy more than any other time of the year, but it’s also when we’re toughest on the environment due to the extra waste we generate and the extra resources we consume. Australian households throw out about A$5.2 billion of food every year, enough to fill more than 450,000 garbage trucks, yet last year we still spent about $913 million on extra food at Christmas. In Albury, the top three items people look to recycle over Christmas include furniture, batteries and whitegoods. And the level of emissions generated by household food waste in landfill is similar to the total emissions involved in the manufacture and supply of iron and steel in Australia. In recent years we’ve also been spending up to $500 on presents, many of which are unwanted. Planet Ark is asking everyone to undertake some simple actions to reduce their impact on the environment and their pockets over the festive season. Planet Ark’s The 12 DOs of Christmas awareness campaign includes tips for reducing food waste and excess packaging, buying green gifts, and recycling items like wrapping paper, foil, cartons, drink containers, plastic and cards as well as electronics and batteries. “A few basic actions can make a big difference to your environmental impact and your budget over Christmas,” Planet Ark spokesperson Rebecca Gilling said.

Spare a thought for the environment this festive season. “Planning meals ahead of time is one of the easiest ways to prevent food wastage. Buying presents in plenty of time also avoids those last-minute panic buys that never get used by the recipient.” Taking someone shopping for their present, giving experiences, gift vouchers or donations are great ways of reducing the likelihood of a present sitting in a cupboard unused. Electronic waste is also a big theme at Christmas as people receive new electronic items and toys as gifts, which are also often battery-heavy. Last year it was electronics vendors such as JB Hi-Fi, Apple, Dick Smith and Harvey Norman that dominated Christmas sales, a trend that looks set to continue. A survey from MobileMuster showed that nearly half of all Australians were planning to buy a new mobile over Christmas and the summer sales. Electronics, mobile phones

and batteries all have recycling options available through national manufacturer and retailer schemes. Contamination of recycling bins at the work Christmas party and at home is another environmental impact easily avoidable through clear signage for guests, and learning what is acceptable in your kerbside recycling bin. The 12 DOs of Christmas action sheet provides helpful ideas for addressing these and other wasteful practices. It can be found on RecyclingNear You.com.au, a comprehensive household recycling directory that lists recycling options for all sorts of items, by council area. Visit Planet Ark’s RecyclingNearYou.com.au website and hotline (1300 733 712) to find out more. Find local recycling options at http://recyclingnearyou.com. au/council/AlburyNSW

Heather Watts, left, and Kay Pollard will be holding a garage sale this month to help raise awareness in Wodonga of ovarian cancer.

Caring for a cause By LACHLAN MOORHEAD ONE group in Wodonga has already made a world of difference to the community in a very short space of time. In just a year and half, Heather Watts and the other members of the Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group have already raised more than $55,000 for ovarian cancer research. Half of this will be donated to research into an early detection test while the other half will go into a trust for the new Albury Cancer Centre. And with the group set to hold an impressive garage sale

this month, the fund-raising won’t be slowing down. “One of our members has a big garden and has potted over 400 plants and we thought this would be a great setting for a garage sale, Heather said. “We’ll be selling all types of items, including as new handbags and jewellery, and we hope to get as many people there as we can. Heather is encouraging people to donate as many items as they can to the garage sale, including bags, wallets, jewellery and hats. The Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group began in July

last year to promote awareness to local women of the symptoms of this “silent killer. Every 10 hours an Australian woman dies from this disease and every day three women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. For Wodonga residents who would like get more information on ovarian cancer or wish to donate to the garage sale, contact Heather Watts on 0401 008 310, or donated goods can be left at the Wodonga Plant Farm. The garage sale will be held from 8am on Saturday 7 December, 50-52 Stanley Street, Wodonga (Melbourne end). All welcome.

Next top models By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE dreams of two local girls have come true after winning a nation-wide modelling competition with Costume Glitz. With the shoot fast approaching in January, the two best friends are holding a sausage sizzle and craft sale at the Springdale Heights IGA this Saturday to raise funds for the trip. “I’m very excited,” 10-year-old HollyRose Boyer said. “I’ve been friends with Lexi for about two years and when I found out she was coming I went crazy! The next time I saw her I gave her a hug and didn’t let go for ages.” Alexandra Michael,13, met Holly-Rose through local dancing competitions. “It’s like a big sister - little sister relationship because Holly is 10 and Lexi is 13,” Alexandra’s mother Michelle Michael said. “Holly doesn’t have a big sister and Lexi doesn’t have a little sister, and they just click.” Of the 320 applicants from across Australia, only 16 winners were chosen, with 10 from the same dance school. Both girls have been dancing since they were just two years old and regularly compete in eisteddfods. Holly-Rose has recently decided to expand her talents by hiring an agent. “She recently got an agent and is trying to get into acting and commercial modelling,” Holly-Rose’s mother Toni Boyer said. “She wanted to enter the competition because it’s on the Gold Coast and she just loves their costumes. Costume Glitz costumes are just absolutely beautiful.” Alexandra saw the competition on Facebook. Both girls are expecting the photo shoots to be a little more laborious than those for regular clothing. “We’re not just modelling clothes, we’re modelling costumes, which is really cool that’s what I want to do,” Holly-Rose said. “They want me to do dancing poses so I’ve been practicing a lot to get the poses right and learn how to stand still while they’re talking. “I don’t want to wait, I want to go now!” The fund-raiser will be held at Springdale Heights IGA on Saturday 7 December from 11am - 2.30pm.

Alexandra Michael and Holly-Rose Boyer are hoping for some generous public support this Saturday at their fund-raiser.

IT’S NO surprise that Christmas and New Year are bad for your health - after all, most of us indulge in too much ‘holiday’ food and drink and slacken off our usual exercise routine. As well, for many women and their families, Christmas can seem like a blur of rushing around, over-commitments and financial strain. Jean Hailes for Women’s Health reminds us all to take a deep breath as we rush headlong towards the end of the year. For some people festivals such as Christmas can also serve to remind them how alone they are. According to Jane Fisher, the Jean Hailes professor of women’s health, it’s OK to take a moment to remember someone

or to just sit quietly and reflect and think about them. “If you have friends or family struggling with feelings of sadness at this time of year, let them know that you are thinking of them,” she said. Jean Hailes GP Dr Vivienne Whitechurch adds that you don’t have to please everyone by catching up before Christmas. “Plan to meet in January when things are quieter and you feel more relaxed,” she said. And endocrinologist Jean Hailes encourages everyone to use the warmer weather to ‘get moving’. “Take your family (and dog) for a brisk nightly walk to see the beautiful Christmas lights adorning the houses in your

neighbourhood,” she said. “It’s a magical time to share with your family, whether you celebrate Christmas or not, and you’re getting fit at the same time.” With a little planning ahead, you can enjoy the holiday season and keep focus on what is most important to you at this time of year. Here are Jean Hailes’ top tips to get you through to the end of the year: Pick and choose what social events you go to - you don’t need to catch up with everyone before Christmas. At your work social function bring a plate of colourful, yet easy to make food - you may be surprised how many people appreciate your effort.

Letters WORDS of wisdom should come from religious ministers - after all, they are the ones “he” chose to inspire people to keep the Laws of God. And, as long as I can write, I will continue to stand up against abortion - after all, what voice does the child in the womb have? Pro-Life and Right to Life and other people do care about the unborn baby in the womb, the most helpless human being on this Earth. The conception of a baby is a gift from God, and we should never give a gift back. Doreen Spalding, Albury.

He’s confused DENISE Cameron appears to be confused again (News Weekly, letters, 20 November) when she argues that abortion is not a religious issue. If she went to the clinic and saw people reading from bibles, praying on a rosary, handing out pamphlets on “how to pray the rosary”, two Catholic priests and billboards of the virgin Mary and “pray to end abortion”, what are we expected to believe? The “witnesses” (who were termed “counsellors” before it was pointed out that they have no

qualifications other than their religious beliefs) have boasted about a “turnaround” due to their “genuineness” when in the past this claim was blatantly untrue. The Lavington Women’s Life Centre, which she promoted, is paid for by the Catholic Church; they have no medical or recognised psychology trained staff, but do have “volunteers,” biased towards their religious beliefs. This community has tolerated this minority group of religious extremists too long and opposes the protesters’ right to harass, intimidate and bully every woman who enters the clinic. The Albury City Council should act to allow free access for any woman who attends the clinic without harassment, intimidation or invasion of the woman’s privacy. Not all of them intend to have a lawful termination. Assoc Prof Pieter Mourik AM, Baranduda.

Harassment AS A resident of the property immediately adjoining the medical clinic in Englehardt Street, I have witnessed countless distressing instances of the intimidation and harassment of people seeking access to medical services. I have watched people, having rebuffed advances, still being pursued by those wishing to

deny them privacy with their pamphlets and posters, and by their very presence. It would be foolish if our society was to ignore, in the light of current governmental enquiries into rape and abuse, the emotional abuse inflicted on these young people. We profess concern for cyber-bullying, bullying in schools and the workplace, but are apparently helpless to protect these people. Others have reported to me that they resented being prayed for. Others have objected to being filmed and I also object to my movements being tracked, filmed and filed. In a secular society the right to freedom of religion must surely be balanced by the right to freedom from religion. Up to seven hours of continuous prayer can take place immediately in front of my premises. I have asked the so-called demonstrators to move but have been informed that the police told them to stand in front of my house. The police confirmed this. If the police have the power to tell them where to stand why can’t they create a buffer zone where clients could park cars and walk to the clinic without fear? I would like my objections noted on behalf of the women entitled to medical privacy, their families and friends, the surrounding businesses and their clients, my neighbours who have all publicly expressed their concern.

For myself, an individual without influence or power, I would appreciate assistance in ensuring my right to enjoy my home without interference and intimidation and in ensuring the rights of others to be free from bullies. Lesley Jenkins, Albury.

Call for witnesses I AM asking for any witnesses on Monday 16 June, 2013 between 4.30pm and 4.40pm travelling on the Hume Freeway heading towards Albury near the advisory board who saw a white ute (older model, Hilux type) with a silver tray, with a yellow NSW number plate. They were parked on the shoulder of the road and suddenly pulled in front of cars that were doing 110 km/h. A car put on their brakes but couldn’t stop in time and had to go on the shoulder of the road to avoid hitting them because there were other cars on the overtaking lane and had nowhere to go. The stupidity of this driver put everyone in a very dangerous situation. Who ever saw this near-fatal crash, come forward and speak to the police. Jed Zamber, Albury.

CDCHD. Each of these has the same activity and financial reporting requirements, audit requirements and subsidy claim process.” Other suggestions from ACSA to the National Commission of Audit include simplifying the Aged Care Allocation Round (ACAR) process, the establishment of a “key personnel” licence that allows police and finance checks to be transportable and avoiding the introduction of future red tape by scrutinising all new reforms and legislation against a “red tape filter”. “With fewer people paying

taxes in the future and an everexpanding older demographic, it is imperative that there be no reduction in any budgetary programs in the aged care sector,” Professor Kelly said. “To provide vital aged care services now and into the future we need a community debate to determine how we best fund and meet the needs of those who require aged care services and their families in a sustainable manner for the sector and the government.” Aged and Community Services Australia is a representative body for mission-based aged care providers.

The Riverwood Retirement Village is a fantastic lifestyle choice for residents.

AGED and Community Services Australia (ACSA) has implored the government not to cut aged care funding and has proposed areas where savings could be made through red tape reduction. ACSA chief executive, Adjunct Professor John Kelly AM, has outlined 14 options to reduce the amount of red tape in aged care administration. “None of these measures on their own or the 14 in total will affect the quality of care being provided to vulnerable older Australians,” Professor Kelly said. “Recent financial analysis, prepared for the Aged Care Financing Authority (ACFA) by KPMG, reports that only 70 per cent of providers were making a surplus in 2011-’12 and of particular concern to ACSA are the small stand-alone services and those in regional, rural and remote areas. “The red tape burden on providers is immense with a significant number having multiple contracts or agreements with the Department of Social Services (formerly with the Department of Health and Ageing). ACSA has recommended a consolidation of package care agreements to prevent cases such as the provider with 19 CACP agreements, eight EACH, six EACH D, four CDCH and four

Aged care growth industry Of those employed in nursing and midwifery, more than 238,000 were registered nurses (including midwives) and about 52,000 were enrolled nurses. Of all employed clinical nurses and midwives, almost two-thirds worked in hospitals. Almost twice as many registered nurses worked in the public sector compared to the private sector, and nurses working in the public sec-

tor worked more hours on average than those in the private sector. Nursing and midwifery continue to be femaledominated professions, with women making up almost 90 per cent of employed nurses and midwives last year. “The proportion of older nurses and midwives has increased, with those aged 50 years and older increasing from 35 per cent to 39 per cent over the 2008-2012 period, Dr Webster said.

THE clinical area of nursing and midwifery with reportedly the largest number of workers is aged care (41,300), which includes work in both residential aged care facilities and hospitals. The revelation came following a report last week by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) which shows numbers of nurses and midwives are rising in Australia ahead of population growth. The report, Nursing and Midwifery Workforce 2012, shows there were about 334,000 nurses and midwives registered in Australia in 2012, or 6.8 per cent more than the 313,000 registered in 2008. “The number of nurses and midwives actually employed in nursing and midwifery also rose, from about 270,000 to about 290,000, or by 7.5 per cent over the same period, Dr Adrian Webster AIHW spokesperson said. Despite the relatively large increase in numbers, the supply of nurses and midwives rose by 0.5 per cent between 2008 and 2012- from 1118 to 1124 full-time equivalent nurses and midwives per 100,000 people. The supply of nurses and midwives per 100,000 people varies between urban and more remote areas. However, unlike many health professions, the variation is relatively small and the supply is greatest in remote areas rather than in more urban areas, the report said. In major cities there are 1134 full time equivalent nurses and midwives per 100,000 people, while in remote areas this rate is 1303 per 100,000 people.

Foot & Leg Facts with Dr Marni Gray, Sports Podiatrist

Keep an eye on your feet SUMMER means warm weather, holidays and increased outdoor activities, which also means more time on your feet. Often this can be barefoot or in thongs and slip-on shoes. This can take a toll on your feet and legs. So what can you do to look after your feet and legs this summer? Below are some simple tips: 1. Vary your footwear Thongs, slip-ons and high heels can have an adverse affect on your feet and legs if worn too much, so wear properly fitted, supportive shoes with lower heels and decent cushioning whenever possible. Sandals (with little or no heel) are often a good option as the straps hold the shoe to your feet so your toes don’t have to do all the work. 2. Avoid too much barefoot activity Going barefoot outside is not a bad thing but it does significantly increase the risk of foot injury. Stepping on foreign objects or hot surfaces, like concrete and sand, can be damaging and painful. Being barefoot in public locations, like swimming pools and showers, can lead to infections. So keep bare feet to when you’re at home, on safe surfaces or relaxing. 3. Always wear appropriate

exercise shoes Even when it’s hot, you still need to exercise in appropriate shoes. Many people take long walks in summer, but doing this barefoot, or in thongs or slip-ons can be very stressful to your feet and legs, with muscles having to do a lot of extra work to accommodate inappropriate footwear. 4. Use a 30+ SPF sunscreen all over your feet Feet can be very susceptible to sunburn, both on top and underneath. It’s important to get any skin lesions checked, as melanoma can still occur on the soles of the feet. 5. Always get foot and leg pain checked

Sore feet can be a symptom of more serious underlying issues and back, hip, knee and ankle pain can all result from bad foot posture. Prevention is better than cure, so don’t wait to get any persisting niggles checked. The good news is, using the latest medical research and treatments, an experienced sports podiatrist can assist most foot and leg pain quickly and effectively, including issues that have been diagnosed as untreatable or require surgery or medication as the only option. Culcairn - The place to be CULCAIRN with its shady treelined streets and historical buildings and homes, sits along the growth pathway between Albury and Wagga Wagga. Just a 20 minute drive from Albury, this pretty and old style New South Wales country town is emerging as a growth center for business and a blossoming residential community. There are plenty of places to visit or take in local produce and craft, a picnic by the river, or cycle along the bike track which loops around the town, Culcairn makes a perfect weekend destination. With a variety of retail shops, parks and historical markers outlining the exploits of bushranger, Dan “Mad Dog Morgan, whom created havoc at Round Hill Station, just west of Culcairn in 1864 and resulting in the death of station overseer John McLean. The marker still stands near the roadside and makes for very interesting reading on the road to Holbrook just minutes from Culcairn’s town centre.

Oasis of the Riverina CULCAIRN is often referred to as the ‘Oasis of the Riverinaâ€? and is a bustling agricultural centre enhanced by many ďƒžne heritage buildings such as the Culcairn Hotel, built in 1891 and

the memorial Hall, Court House and Railway Station. While these are great points of interest for visitors, locals are able to enjoy excellent facilities especially in sporting and recreation

pursuits. Locals enjoy excellent football, tennis, cricket and netball facilities, a public swimming pool, golf course, lawn bowls and more. Licensed clubs and picturesque parks and gardens complement the excellent rural lifestyle opportunities available in Culcairn.

to a third cheaper than in larger towns. With the Freeway now open, the drive is a pleasant one offering time to unwind, something the city doesn’t afford.

Last year’s Wodonga Carols were a great success, and the same is expected for this coming Christmas season.

Choir backs carols IT’S THAT time of year again and the Wodonga Carols by Candlelight is set to bring the town to life. This year’s carols, to be held on Saturday 15 December at Willow Park in Pearce Street, will provide the community with a great opportunity to catch up with everyone and celebrate the festive season. There will be 23 singers performing on the night, rotating through 25 different carols and supported by an 80-voice choir, made up from Sing Australia and local primary schools. In addition, 12 performers will be leading Carols at

Wodonga for the very first time. The 35-piece Wodonga Brass band will also be there in force to lead the guests in a rousing night of revelry and carols. With plenty of space, Willow Park is perfect for a picnic and a night of singing. Pre-carols entertainment will be on offer from local performer PJ and the Wodonga Primary School Choir, providing light entertainment while people relax and get comfortable for the night ahead, with the carols commencing at 7.30pm. The program will be hosted by San-

OPENS THIS FRIDAY DEC 6, AT MYER CENTREPOINT!

Aaron Pedersen stars in Mystery Road.

Hot outback on a slow burn By JASON BECK Mystery Road (M) STARRING: Aaron Pedersen, Jack Thompson, Hugo Weaving IF YOU like long, slow-burning movies about Indigenous issues, then settle in for this one. Aboriginal all-star Aaron Pedersen takes the lead, as a detective returning to his outback home town to investigate the murder of a young Aboriginal girl. Set in “outback anywhere” it seems

odd to describe a film that mostly takes place in hard, flat sunlight as a film noir, but that’s what it is. Director Ivan Sen has beautifully shot the outback in a way that conveys its sense of timelessness - the same sense of timelessness you’ll feel during this long, long film. Sen works hard at conveying the flat, clipped, dry speech of Australian men. The film’s eventual climax is a genre-busting shootout which com-

bines both long and short-range combat, over several minutes, with no-one hitting anything particularly much. It’s an interesting take on the gunfight. It’s a lyrical film which takes you somewhere else - you’ll just wish it was a little shorter, and you got to that other place a little more rapidly. Still, in the wasteland of Australian films, it’s probably the best outing since the terrifying Snowtown.

WITH GEOFF HABERECHT OF TRU HIFI

Quality tops price THIS year was considered the return to quality audio and visual products for the home entertainment market. For the past decade it has been more about price than value but most of the products that received the highest accolades delivered this year more than most customers expected. Here are some examples: 4K televisions have an improved resolution which provides a stunning image. Before you buy this item, check out how they perform on standard television images. With 80-inch screens becoming more affordable than ever, most would have thought that it was the end for projectors. With sub-$1000 widescreen HD projectors and now a sub-$1500 3D widescreen projector with an 100-inch screen, it is time to re-look at this category. The very top of the projector line-up has seen price movements that are unprecedented. Budget home theatre receivers have suffered at the hands of sound bars, with $500 sound bars providing a relief for television sound. A number of models above $500 have certainly made many people re-think the sound option for their televisions. With wireless subwoofers and a large reduction in cables, it is worth checking sound bars out before buying a budget theatre pack. The high-end AV receiver is changing, experiencing a number of changes from the leading brands to make this category more music-friendly. Most of the big names have recently

changed the models to include better quality amplification with better power supplies. This makes high-end audio and theatre a possibility from the same receiver. Streaming features, internet radio, true dual zones including video and app operations are now all becoming commonplace. To meet the new demand for highquality audio, the speaker market took a turn to become ultra-competitive. 2012 saw the start of very high-end speakers becoming more affordable. While only a couple of key brands broke ranks last year, the floodgates opened in 2013. With careful selection, many high-end speakers can be

half the price compared to two years ago. 2014 will consolidate the 2013 breakout year, which saw customers returning to mainstream audio markets. The benefit today is many prices reflect price parity with US currency. But this will change next year as the lower Australian dollar may erode some of the affordable gains we saw this year. Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

Howlong eye-opener CURRENT-day Howlong is an eye-opener for many people - a village transformed into a thriving town, with so much to offer either young families, retirees or even investors. On the banks of the Murray River, about 25 minutes from both Wodonga and Albury, this town offers wide streets with ample car parking, unlike some of the newer developments in larger towns. The commercial centre is also strong with a supermarket, newsagency, bakery, two hotels, financial institutions and cafes. Our feature home, on the market for $219,000, is located a couple of blocks from Lowe Reserve which includes a swimming pool and is home

3

1

to many sports including tennis, football, cricket, netball and a BMX course. Built roughly 14 years ago under the guidance of the selfbuild scheme, the home comes with built-in robes, a lounge with a natural gas wall furnace, an electric oven with a gas cooktop and double sink bathroom and laundry. Ducted cooling is included in all main rooms inside the house, which also boasts a magnificent covered and paved outdoor area suitable for yearround living. Carpets, light fittings and window furnishings all come as part of the package which means the buyer can move in immediately and start living.

The home is surrounded by high fences on three sides, has a single carport garden shed and a cubby for the children to play in. Built on a large 1006 square metre block, the house can be extended to add further living or bedroom accommodation. Another way of ‘value adding’ to the home would be to subdivide, allowing another dwelling on the property subject to council approval. Buses will take children to secondary schools in Albury as well as a public bus service for people wanting to have a day out shopping or attending appointments. Whichever way you look at it, the buyer’s a winner.

Homes selling faster in regional Victoria

Enzo Raimondo

AS BUYERS take advantage of the few weeks left before the Christmas slowdown in the property market, the number of days homes were on the market by private sale in regional Victoria fell to its lowest level in almost two years in October. Selling times fell in both Melbourne and regional areas, with the average number of days on the market in the regions falling from 113 to 92. Although these figures are not seasonally adjusted and the average number of days on market generally falls in October, this is also due to the strong market at a time of easily available finance with low interest rates. With so much publicity about the number of auctions scheduled at this time of year and the “super Saturday” auction days taking place in Melbourne, it is easy to forget that most house sales in Victoria are private sales. This is particularly so in regional areas. While auction clearance

CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

rates enable measurement of the auction market’s performance, days on the market - that is, the length of time it takes the property to sell - enable measurement of the performance of private sales. Generally, a shorter time on the market reflects a stronger market. The October result of 92 days was the lowest since 88 days in November 2011 and the first time since June 2012, when the figure was 98 days, that it had fallen below 100. The number of days a property is on the market is linked to the negotiation process - the sooner the buyer and seller can agree on a price, the quicker the sale. The real estate agent’s role is to facilitate this, but when buyers are negotiating they should remember that the agent is legally obliged to act in the best interests of the seller they represent, not the buyer. Buyers who feel they need someone to represent them can use the services of a buyer’s agent.

Home for Christmas THE NSW Government should give first home buyers a Christmas present in the form of the reintroduction of incentives for existing properties, according to the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales. REINSW President Christian Payne said now was the time for the NSW Government to act, as rising prices and increased turnover have combined to send stamp duty revenues through the roof and shoot the budget into surplus. “The State Government should be ensuring that those looking to purchase their first property are being given the support they need,” Mr Payne said. “We are approaching a very significant time where families come together to celebrate. It’s also a time

of evaluation where life decisions and major changes can be made. “Our fear is many will visit friends and family interstate over the festive season and reconsider their future in NSW due to their inability to purchase property. “The NSW Government must act now, before Christmas, to reintroduce incentives for first home buyers. If they do not act quickly enough we will lose our best young people to other states. “The return to surplus announced by the NSW Government at the beginning of November means that the funding, which was largely provided by the property market in the first place, is available to be distributed to first home buyers,” Mr Payne said.

Keys to safe driving drink driving is a factor in approximately one in every five fatal crashes. Of the people who are killed, 88 per cent are men and 75 per cent are under the age of 40. Alcohol affects your driving skills, moods and behaviour. Once it’s been consumed the effects cannot be reversed. The only thing that will sober you up is time. Many people are also unaware that you don’t have to be drunk to be affected by alcohol. You may feel normal but no one drives as well after drinking alcohol. Another obvious but imperative tip is if you have children in the car, ensure they are in the appropriate child restraint - same goes with pets. Before you head off on a drive it is also a good idea to check out what is happening on the roads you plan to travel on. The RTA website provides live traffic reports which are up-dated regularly from the RTA’s Traffic Management Centre (TMC), as does VicRoads. Finally, with so many people on the road, tensions are high. But with the added stress, it is more important than ever to stay calm, even if another driver is being discourteous. Stay relaxed and try not to let other people’s driving skills (or lack there of) or decisions worry you. If another driver makes a mistake don’t get angry, just concentrate on your own driving skills, behaviour and safety. Similarly, if another driver is courteous towards you, then acknowledge the good deed with a wave.

Follow some simple tips and stay safe on the roads this holiday season. 1096637-HM42-13

EVERYONE knows with the excitement and rush of the holidays comes an increased risk on the roads, but who actually takes the time to modify their behaviour as a motorist? To ensure you and your loved ones make it to your Christmas destinations safe and sound, here are a few tips to take on board this festive season. Firstly, prepare your car - have it serviced and check that you’re prepared for emergencies with a blanket, torch and first aid kit. If you’re towing a trailer or caravan, inspect tyre condition and inflation - including spares, that the towbar and towing equipment is secure, all electrical connections are secure and lights work correctly, trailer brakes work correctly and rear view mirrors are adjusted correctly. Secondly, prepare yourself - be rested before a long drive, plan the trip so you share the driving and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue. When setting off on a long trip, don’t leave too early in the morning because your body clock believes you should still be asleep. Have a 15-minute rest every two hours. On a long trip, utilise Driver Reviver stops which provide a cup of tea or coffee. Also, be aware of the signs of driver fatigue, which include yawning, sweaty hands, tired eyes, poor concentration, restlessness, drowsiness, boredom, slow reactions and over-steering. The next tip is an obvious one, though people die every festive season from not recognising it - don’t drink and drive! If you plan to have a drink- plan not to drive. In NSW

Local Sport Up in Flames By KRYSTEN MANUEL, PHOTOS: ADAM WILSON THE Lauren Jackson Sports Centre played host to a firey game on Saturday, with the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames defeating the Tradies Canberra Capitals 8168. Credit goes to Sydney Uni’s Alicia Poto who was the game’s top scorer with 19 points, including four three-pointers. Lauren King was Sydney Uni’s secondleading scorer with 17 and Katie-Rae Ebzery followed suit with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. For the Caps, Natalie Hurst was the top scorer with 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Flames coach Karen Dalton said she was impressed with the combined effort from each member of the team, particularly seeing as all 10 players were on court. “They all played well, I was really happy with everyone’s contribution, she said. “I think Alicia Poto did a great defensive job on Nat Hurst and Jess Bibby, and Katie-Rae (Ebzery) and Lauren King had a good game. “I was really happy with the whole team and the roles they played when they came on the floor. Dalton said a quick start for the

Casey Samuels makes a desperate grab as the Caps’ Abbey Bishop descends on the ball. Flames was a key factor in determining the rest of the game. “We got off to a good start - our first half set up the win, she said. “The third quarter we struggled a little bit, but we followed the game plan to the letter, our defence from start to finish was pretty good - we had a couple of lapses. “Our defence is generating our offence at the moment. The Capitals have next week off be-

fore heading to Townsville and Logan, time Dalton said will be dedicated to refining their defence. “We’ve won four in a row, she said. “We have no problems scoring; it’s our ability to defend and rebound that’s been an issue in the losses we’ve had previous to that. Sydney Uni Flames 81 (Poto 19, King 17, Ebzery 13) Canberra Capitals 68 (Hurst 15, Bibby 13, Bunton 12)

By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S been an impressive year for 10-year-old Campbell Chesser of the Border’s Team Velocity. Having started the year with a gold in the Victorian Track and Field Championships, Campbell has made his mark at the 2013 All Schools National Championships in Brisbane on the weekend of 23 November. Campbell took out a silver in the 200m with a time of 27.25, silver in the 4 x 100m relay and gold in the 8 x 100m relay (girls and boys combined). When it came to the 100m, Campbell missed out on a medal by a millisecond, with a time of 13.36 seconds. “It was a very close 100m, he said. “I wasn’t disappointed at all, I was proud of what I’d done in the 200m the day before. Campbell also took home three gold medals in Shepparton last weekend at the Little Athletics Regional Relays in the categories of 4 x 100m, 4 x 200m and medley. “I’ll keep training with Ken (Little) next year, Campbell said. “And I’d like to thank Ken - he’s very supportive, he always rings before and after my races.
