n Dad says son ‘never met a stranger, only new friends’...
Friend’s farewell By JESSE GRAHAM HE WAS described by many as an inspirational and kind-hearted young man. Last week, almost 1000 friends and family gathered at Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn to farewell 17-yearold Josh Matthews who died of a suspected asthma attack on 27 November.
People packed into the auditorium of the church, filling the main room and three overflow rooms, as many speakers took to the stage to share their memories of the teenager. Known to his family and friends as ‘Turbo’, Josh was well-known to many through being co-captain at Lilydale Heights Secondary College and a member of Coldstream Football Club.
A group of five friends spoke briefly on their experiences with Josh, though they all found a common thread when speaking of his compassion and care for anything with a heartbeat. “He was always first to help and the last to leave,” said one friend. “Through the darkest days of my life, Josh was always here for me,” said another.
His father, Roger Matthews, summed up the sentiments and adoration of so many when he said that Josh was a person that he could say “I am better for having met that person”. “He cared genuinely. He never met a stranger, only new friends.” An outpouring of grief flowed from the local community since Josh’s death, with 6183 people liking a Face-
book page in his memory and hundreds of family and friends gathering at Lillydale Lake shortly after his death for a balloon release. Rohan Dredge ran the service at Discovery Church and read out sentiments from those who could not attend, or could not speak on the day. Coldstream Football Club hosted a wake after the funeral had finished.
Work safety firefighters lobby MP MORE than 150 Country Fire Authority (CFA) members and associates gathered last Saturday to make a stand to get presumptive cancer legislation passed in the Victorian Parliament. The 27 crews from around the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges met at 9pm in front of Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe’s office to inform her of the current legislation that does not protect CFA members from cancer contracted on the job. Lilydale CFA captain Warren Davis said currently firefighters are more prone to certain types of cancer but because cancers can take years to show up it is almost impossible to prove they are work-related. “Our aim is for some presumptive legislation to be moved in Parliament for all fire volunteers and career staff to be protected,” he said. “We have had a very good discussion with Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe who has given us a few good leads which we are going to follow up. “I’m very overwhelmed by the amount of support we have received and what we are hoping is that the rest of the volunteers around Victoria stand up and do the same.” For the full story, see page 7.

Briefly Scissor threat POLICE are investigating after two youths produced a pair of scissors at a Lilydale bottle shop after being asked for identification while buying alcohol. Detective Senior Sergeant Allan Price said two youths, believed to be underage, were looking at alcohol when they were asked for age identification. They rudely told the shop assistant where to go and continued looking at the alcohol. The young males then grabbed two bottles, and were asked for ID again before producing a pair of scissors and leaving the shop and driving off in a Nissan Pulsar car. Sen Sgt Price said the car is believed to be stolen. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lilydale CIU on 9739 2300.
Pulsars targetted POLICE are warning Nissan Pulsar owners to make sure their cars are locked after a spate raids on the vehicles. Leading Senior Constable Linda Hancock said police believed that thieves were targeting 1998 and 1999 models. On the Eyewatch Yarra Ranges Facebook page, Ldg Sen Const Hancock said those who police believe are responsible have been charged and released on bail with curfew conditions, but were still offending. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

the Country Women’s Association could have a meeting place. Ms Vaytauer said the community bank understands that clubs like the RSL have to raise their own funds and bank members enjoy being able to support them when they can. “The RSL are very good supporters of us and that’s how we work,” she said. “It’s got to be a two-way street so the more support we get as a community bank from the local community, the more we can actually put into the community through grants and sponsorship.” Talks are already in place for getting the new air-conditioning unit installed as soon as possible.

By REBECCA BILLS A MOUNT EVELYN kitchen fire could have been prevented with a fire blanket and extinguisher according to Mount Evelyn CFA Captain Jim Armstrong. Leaving extensive damage to the kitchen flue and roof space of the house, the Mount Evelyn Country Fire Authority (CFA) were called to the fire last month after cooking was left on the stove unattended. Mr Armstrong said stove fires are one of the most regular jobs they get called out too and they are generally the result of cooking that has been left unattended. “Like in the case of the Mount Evelyn incident, people walk out of the kitchen and
“Also really start thinking about what your fire plan is and to make the decision on whether you will stay and defend your home in the case of a fire or leave. “What people really need to have in place if they are going to leave is a trigger point of something that indicates to the whole family it’s time to go.” Mr Armstrong also said that residents should all download the free Fire Ready application onto their smartphones that will alert them if there is a fire in the area. The Mount Evelyn Fire Ready Victoria Meeting will be held on 16 December at 6.30pm on the Corner of Joy and Aqueduct Avenue, Mount Evelyn. All residents are invited to join.
A WOULD-BE robber is licking his wounds after a blood trail led police to his door. The man, a 43-year-old from Mooroolbark, has been charged by police after he robbed a man at gun point at a Montrose petrol station. Detective Senior Sergeant Allan Price from Lilydale CIU said the man held the gun, an imitation pistol, to another man using the ATM in the store and demanded money. “He took the man’s wallet,” Sen Sgt Price said. “But he wasn’t expecting the attendant to come out of the back of the shop with an iron bar.” The victim was unharmed, but the would-be thief received severe lacerations to his head and severe swelling to his arm. The injured man then fled the petrol station, located on Mt Dandenong Road. “Police were able to view CCTV footage from the shop and were able to identify the suspect, who was known to police,” he said. “We were then able to visit the man at his home and found him in a pretty bad way.”

Prevention key to fires forget they have put something on when it catches on fire,” he said. “It is really important that people always keep an eye on their cooking and in an instance where something does happen, they have a working smoke alarm, fire blanket and fire extinguisher on hand. “It is damage that is just so easily preventable.” Mr Armstrong also said that with summer here, the CFA will be holding a Fire Ready Community Meeting in Mount Evelyn to help residents prepare for the summer. “In short we urge all residents to start doing a clean-up around their property and to keep their grass and hedges as short as possible,” he said.

MOUNT Evelyn RSL has been granted $3300 by the Mount Evelyn Community Bank for a new air-conditioning unit. Last Thursday Mount Evelyn Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank manager Leanna Vaytauer handed over the cheque to Mount Evelyn RSL president Rodger Boness and said the bank’s point of difference is that its profit goes back into the community. Mr Boness said the air-conditioning unit will be well received by hall users, especially the elderly, who have been looking at alternative meeting spaces because of how hot the space gets. “Now that it’s summer, the
sun sets in the west and beats down on the far wall of the hall,” he said. “A lot of people that use our hall are senior members and it’s very, very appropriate and very fitting for the Bendigo Community Bank to be involved in ensuring their comfort while in the use of this community asset. “The Mount Evelyn community relies on all of our community groups, and in this town, all of those groups work together as one.” Mr Boness said the Mount Evelyn RSL Hall was built from money that Doctor Bill Hardy and his wife Gwen donated so the RSL and other community groups such as the Mount Evelyn Senior Citizens Club and

MORE stolen laptops have been found by police investigating a number of school thefts in Yarra Ranges, Whitehorse, Maroondah and Knox areas. Detective Senior Sergeant Allan Price said that police charged five people last week, who were released on bail with curfew conditions. He said police did a check on one of the Mooroolbark men charged last week and found he wasn’t home and there were six stolen laptops on the floor. “Police were able to seize them and later arrested the man,” he said. “Two of the computers were identified as being stolen from a school in Rimple near Shepparton.”

Friends all said goodbye By JESSE GRAHAM HE WAS described by many as an inspirational and kindhearted young man. Last week, almost 1000 friends and family gathered at Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn to farewell 17-year-old Josh Matthews who died of a suspected asthma attack on 27 November. “He was always first to

His father, Roger Matthews, summed up the sentiments and adoration of so many when he said that Josh was a person that he could say “I am better for having met that person”. “He cared genuinely. He never met a stranger, only new friends.” An outpouring of grief flowed from the local community since Josh’s death, with 6183 people liking a Facebook page in his memory and hundreds of family and friends gathering at Lillydale Lake shortly after his death for a balloon release. Delay for legal centre By JESSE GRAHAM
Family and friends farewelled Josh ‘Turbo’ Matthews last week at a funeral service in Mount Evelyn.
A DELAY has meant that the opening of a new Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) for Healesville and its surrounds will not take place until early next year. It was reported in The Mail on 24 September that the new ECLC was to open out of Healesville’s Community Link Offices around November, being fully up-and-running by January. However, ECLC CEO Michael Smith said there had been a delay in appointing a co-ordinator for the centre, and the centre would now be set to open in middle to late January. The centre, once opened, will focus on homelessness, tenancy issues and family violence, with lawyers and trained staff able to offer free advice to residents on an appointment basis. Mr Smith said a co-ordinator had now been appointed and new lawyers taken on board for the opening of the new centre and that the lease for the offices was signed. Currently, the closest ECLC centre for those living in the Yarra Ranges is in Boronia, though the not-forprofit group has run outreach services in Healesville, Yarra Glen, Lilydale and Yarra Junction for five years. For more information, visit www.eclc.org.au.
Town drives future forward the need for economic regeneration and development in Coldstream. Executive manager for policy and Chief Economist for the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry Steven Wojtkiw will speak at the coming meeting. Mr Wojtkiw will speak on the challenges of local economic development before a questions-and-answers session on his talk. Other items on the agenda include a discussion on the outcomes on the two previous community meetings and a slideshow of great community projects. Mr Riseley said in a onepage summary of the Cinema
Night recently held in Coldstream that there was frustration at poor bus services and a lack of facilities and services for families and young people. He said positive change suggested by the communities could include the development of playgrounds, a skate park and community events, along with an improvement to public transport. Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister will attend the meeting and all are welcome to attend. For more information, call Chris Riseley on 9294 6123, email c.riseley@yarraranges. vic.gov.au or visit www.yarrarangesviews.com.au/coldstreams-future.

Don’t leave library on the shelf
Unsung heroes
LAST week, there was a get-together of residents who value our library. To protect our threatened library, these people distributed and collected petitions, gave hours to a petition table and made a deputation to the mayor. Delighted that the voice of the people was listened to, we would like to convey our sincere thanks to the 770 signatories of the petition who assisted in securing council’s assurance that the proposed relocation of the Yarra Junction Library, from its purpose built building, is no longer an option being considered. The overwhelming response from the public in just two weeks has prompted the formation of a Friends of the Yarra Junction Library through which the community can continue to support our library. Perhaps you are willing to share your skills and interests with others, make suggestions of activities you would like to see at the library assist with catering for tours? There are endless ways you can support the library. Everyone is welcome, so contact us. Rosemary Crowley, Yarra Junction.
Lions Christmas pride YOUR articles heralding the forthcoming Christmas Carols at the Sanctuary give little credit to the contribution made by the Healesville Lions Club that effectively makes this occasion possible. Your article headed Carols on Call in the Christmas supplement (2 December) made no mention of this, while the more in depth article on the following pages merely states (after lauding the sanctuary) that the event is organised by the Lions. This particular event would not be the success that it will be without the substantial monetary contribution made by the Lions to underwrite it. While they certainly don’t look for accolades, it would seem appropriate that on occasions such as this a little more attention could be given them in publicly acknowledging their fantastic contribution and support to our community. Trevor Williams, Don Valley.
I READ Margaret Pattle’s letter praising the paramedics who serve our area (Impressed by Paramedics, Mail, 3 December) and hope life is treating her better now. We often forget to thank those who help us when we are in such stressful situations. Her succinct statement: “I felt I had two sons looking after me” moved me to tears. In my opinon, the paramedics, both men and women, are our unsung heroes. Barbara Brady, Badger Creek.
Sad day on the green ON Saturday 7 December my daughter and good friend (who is also a new mum) were having a get-together in their home town at Rochford. They had been looking forward to attending a Day on the Green for some weeks. Settling into a space with prepared picnic baskets, rug and extra warm clothes they were enjoying a great night. A birthday present was also given to my daughter. Having briefly left their spot at one stage, upon returning, they found everything had been stolen except their rug. Two woven African baskets, two gifts from the concert organisers, clothes and the birthday gift were now gone. It is so sad to think that someone has come out to a concert and been dishonest enough to steal these two young women’s belongings, what a low act. The people responsible could make amends by returning the stolen goods, anonymously, to Rochford. Faye Snell-Clements, Chum Creek.
Correction THE Mail would like to clarify an error in our front page story of Upper Yarra Mail this week. The second sentence should read: “A submission from Warburton police to Yarra Ranges Council has now led to a FOI request from opposition group SayNoNarcanon.” The error was made by our editorial team at head office, not the reporter Kath Gannaway. We apologise for any issues caused by this error.

Phillip Sampson and mum Emma with Rotarians Gary Davies and Graeme Chester sharing Picture: KATH GANNAWAY a Magic Moment at Healesville Sanctuary. 111772
Phillip encounters fair-dinkum Aussie By KATH GANNAWAY THERE was time for a little pre-operation magic for Vanuatu teenager Phillip Sampson, thanks to Healesville Sanctuary and Rotary. Phillip, in Australia for an operation to repair a fracture to the top of his femur under the ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) program, visited the Sanctuary on Sunday, 1 December, where he and his mother Emma met a kangaroo for the first time as part of a Sanctuary ‘Magic Moment’ experience.
While Phillip, 16, speaks limited English, there were lots of smiles which said very clearly it was a bit magical to be patting and feeding a real, live kangaroo. The Yarra Valley experience included a visit to Healesville Greyhounds and the Chocolaterie at Yarra Glen. Phillip is one of more than 400 children from more than 20 developing countries that have benefited from the program. ROMAC has been in operation for more than 25 years with Rotarians such as Graeme Chester from Healesville and
Gary Davies from Dingley Village volunteering their time and expertise to run the Rotary program that encompasses all the Rotary districts across Australia and New Zealand. The program is supported by many eminent Australian and New Zealand surgeons who generously donate their time free for the treatment of the patients. Phillip had his operation at Epworth Hospital on Tuesday, 3 December and Mr Davies said he was recovering well and would stay on in Australia for Christmas.

Firey meeting By REBECCA BILLS THE office of local MP Christine Fyffe was surrounded by local firefighters and their families joining forces to advocate greater rights. The 27 crews from around the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges gathered last Saturday showing their support for firefighters cancer legislation which makes it easier for career and volunteer firefighters to get workers’ compensation if they suffer cancer from the job. Representative of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Peter Beaton said all major parties in the Australian Parliament supported this kind of legislation for federally employed firefighters two years ago. “The Tasmanian and South Australian Parliaments have passed legislation and since then the Western Australian Parliament has introduced legislation for career firefighters with a Bill to cover volunteers due early in 2014,” he said. “The firefighters cancer law is presumptive legislation - if you have a certain number of years’ service as a firefighter and it’s one of the 12 typical firefighter cancers, the law would presume it to be work-related so you can concentrate on treatment and recovery instead of a possible court case. “They (firefighters) are not asking for anything extra, just the removal of an unfair barrier to accessing the compensation to which they are already entitled.” Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe
The CFA volunteers listen to the State Members. 111817 Picture: GREG CARRICK said she was pleased to meet with the firefighters from across the hills on Saturday. “The firefighters who participated in the family rally on Saturday were very professional and cordial, and their representatives clearly articulated their concerns,” she said. “As the member for Evelyn, I will be advocating on behalf of our CFA members to the relevant ministers and to parliament. “We are fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers protecting us from bushfires and other disasters.” Lilydale CFA captain Warren Davis said there were 60,000 volunteers within the CFA across the country and if every one of those voted they could bring down a government.
“This is a very important issue and we need to get the message out,” he said. “We have had a very good discussion with Member for Evelyn Christine Fyffe who has given us a few good leads which we are going to follow up. “Obviously there was no result on the day, but Christine Fyffe now knows why we are pushing for this and at the end of the day it is for our families’ benefit that this is passed.” Captain Davis said they were now planning to meet with other government representatives in the new year to continue their fight for the legislation to be passed. He also said that during the gathering on Saturday morning no fire station in the area was left unattended, with vehicles in every area manned and ready for any firefighting activity.

Public art cops VicRoads’ ire By REBECCA BILLS “WATCH this roundabout,” said Monbulk Business Network President John Coleman after the Monbulk Christmas Tree was ordered to be taken down. The four-metre high controversial Christmas tree on Main Road/Jordan Road roundabout was constructed by local artist Joost Bakker. It was taken down on Friday night after orders from VicRoads deemed the site ’unsafe’. VicRoads regional director Adam Maguire said the sculpture was installed without the consent of VicRoads or the council and needed to be removed for safety reasons. “It was blocking sight lines for motorists using the intersection,” he said. “In addition, there were unintended consequences of people crossing the road to get close to the sculpture, putting themselves at risk of being involved in an accident. “VicRoads contacted the local trader responsible and explained the safety issues and the need for the sculpture to be removed urgently.” Monbulk Business Network stated in a comment on their Facebook Page that VicRoads gave the group an ultimatum to have the tree down and paperwork submitted by 5pm or they would take it down and charge the group. “I got the paperwork in record time and Joost who is a very much sought after man made the time to remove the tree,” the spokesperson said. “I accept that VicRoads were acting correctly according to criteria.” Mr Coleman said the situation was embarrassing because the group never expected the Christmas tree to gain as much attention as it did but worked closely with VicRoads to resolve the situation. “We never expected the coverage to get outside of Monbulk in reality,” he said. “In my personal opinion it has put Monbulk on the map and hopefully in a good way. “Anything we do in the future we will make sure is done officially.” Mr Coleman said he apologises to VicRoads and the council for the unintended inconvenience caused.
Monbulk Business Network President John Coleman with artist Joost Bakker in front of the tree before it was removed. 111740 Picture: MELISSA MEEHAN Mr Bakker said he was upset that the tree was pulled down, however understood that it needed to be done. “Every time I have done something, it’s been controversial - there are always people who don’t like my work and others that love the work.” The Christmas tree attracted more than 8000 views on Facebook in the first few days of being erected and has been a constant talking point for locals - gaining national media coverage over the weekend. “I find the whole idea of Christmas in Australia a bit strange anyway,” he said. “The fact that we have fake snow covered Christmas trees is all a bit odd so I’ve always played around artistically with Christmas and used the shape of the Christmas tree in different ways. “I genuinely love my work so I don’t really worry too much about how other people feel.”

Crime novelist finds her thrilling destiny By JODIE SYMONDS
Silvan Primary School student Rowan. 111753
Apples for kids By JODIE SYMONDS SILVAN students are learning in leaps and bounds with the introduction of new iPads in the classroom. Silvan Primary School acting principal Leigh Johnson said the technology had already made a huge improvement in the students’ grades. The school received the Apple iPads two weeks ago after students completed an online survey about new technology they would like at the school. Most subjects for grades three to six will use the iPads, but a major focus will be the computer based subjects. “The iPads have assisted the students in such a short
period. Their literary skills and communication have all improved,” Mr Johnson said. “This will really add to the quality of learning that is happening right across the school,” teacher Corinne said. “This will mean that we can do research at our table,” student Rowan said. “They have already been taking photos of the school and making movies on iMovie to represent Silvan Primary then we showcase them in the newsletter,” Mr Johnson said. Silvan Primary School implemented eSmart to assist their students to learn about cyber safety. The primary school has a green-amber-red approach to cyber safety using the iPads
to assist the students be aware of what is and isn’t acceptable online. “We also teach them about keeping personal information confidential online, and being wary of what they post online because it does stay around forever,” Mr Johnson said. The students all have the opportunity to create their own Wiki Page where they can work share ideas, photos and videos with each other. Parents and staff have been supportive of the iPad as the school hopes to receive more iPads in the future. LOCAL crime writer Sandi Wallace’s dream of becoming an author has become thrillingly true. The Mount Dandenong writer’s novel was recognised at the prestigious Scarlet Stiletto Awards for women in late November. The Scarlet Stiletto Awards competition allows Australian female crime writers to enter short stories and win awards for their work. Among 2500 entrants with competing short stories, Ms Wallace won the Best Investigative Prize out of 18 writers in her category. More than a month after awards night, Ms Wallace was approached by publishing company Clan Destine Press wanting to publish her novel. “I had been working on my novel for about five years because I really needed to work out my writing style,” she said. Ms Wallace said she found her passion for crime writing as a six-year-old and had always wanted to become an author. She entered numerous short story competitions and continued to write about crime, inspired by television and books she had read as a child. “I always had an interest in crime. I started writing when I was a teenager then I just knew I wanted to publish a book,” she said. Ms Wallace had previously submitted her novel before the Scarlet Stiletto Awards night but didn’t have any luck. She said a publishing company was very interested in the concept of her novel but said she needed to work on her writing. “It was so exciting when
Novel publishing contract winner Sandi Wallace. 111755 publisher Lindy Cameron and Clan Destine said ‘I want your book’,” she said. “I really wanted to embrace Australian writing - not to be ashamed of it.” “This experience allowed me to learn my own style of writing and be able to share the experience. “I’m from Mount Dandenong so I’m really drawn to country Victoria with wider readership,” she said. Her novel is based in Daylesford but has aspects which were influenced by her own life in the ranges. Ms Wallace said the characters in her novel were derived by various traits and personalities of people she knows and
reveals a darker side of police procedural in country Victoria. “The main characters are all very different. Georgie Harvey is a writer from Richmond who is going through personal angst,” she said. “Then there’s Susan who is a retired farmer who is still grieving over her husband who was murdered. “They all experience different things, some are scared of change but would like to do something different and we then read what occurs.” Ms Wallace is currently writing her third book that she said will feature as part of a series, with the first instalment to be released early next year.

Taxpayers warned of scam By JODIE SYMONDS THE taxman is warning of a phone scam being played on Yarra Valley residents. The alert has been issued after a Woori Yallock resident was repeatedly called by scammers asking for money last Wednesday. “The scammer wanted me to send $200 dollars to receive over $7000
dollars I was apparently undercharged during tax time,” the anonymous victim said. “I then received calls every 15 to 20 minutes and I repeatedly told the man to stop calling. “The man became angry so I hung up the phone and called the ATO straight away.” she said. The Australian Tax Office says it has received a spike in complaints
about email and phone call scams since 31 October. “Since June, reports from the public of phishing scams have quadrupled to 15,441 compared with just 3586 during the same period last year,” the ATO website said. Tax Commissioner Chris Jordan advises people to be vigilant of scammers attempting to mimic the ATO because their sites can look identical to the
ATO’s website. “Scammers are also becoming more sophisticated in the way they trick taxpayers into handing over their personal details,” Mr Jordan said. Mr Jordan said if locals receive phone calls from people claiming to be from the ATO they should hang up the phone and report it immediately. The Woori Yallock resident encourages locals to take care because it can
be easy to become trapped in a scam. Anyone who thinks they have been conned in a tax related scam should contact their financial institution immediately and report the incident to the Australian Taxation Office. For more information on how to identify a scam, or to report a scam contact police or call the Australian Taxation Office on 1800 060 062.
Deadline passes for sculpture house By KATH GANNAWAY THE future of Warburton’s iconic sculpture house is in limbo as the deadline for engineering and building reports called for by Yarra Ranges Council passes. Owner Bob Prudhoe was issued with a demolition order on a section of the building in Highfield Road, Warburton, in September, along with a notice to remove works that encroach on part of council land. Yarra Ranges Council Planning Department granted Mr Prudhoe an extension of time to 28 November to provide the names of a building surveyor and engineer who would be “conducting the inspection and assessment of your art structures” and advise of how long they would need to finish their assessments and reports. He confirmed to the Mail last week that he had been able to meet the deadline and was still looking for an engineer and building surveyor who would take on the job on a pro-bono basis. Behind the scenes, community members are working to help Mr Prudhoe, a pensioner, who by his own admission is struggling to address the immediate orders on the house, and to plan for the future maintenance of the buildings that are increasingly being recognised as a unique tourist drawcard.
Keith Simons, a local businessman and friend, said while there had been a number of possibilities discussed, and some positive things happening, more time was needed. “This is a complex complex and time-consuming problem that had evolved over many years, with the knowledge of Yarra Ranges Council staff and councillors, and something that can’t be fixed in a matter of weeks, or even months,” he said. One of the positive things Mr Simons alluded to was the possibility that the buildings could be listed as a significant example of outsider art with the Self Taught and Outsider Art Research Collection at Sydney University College of the Arts. Dr Chris James, a former resident of Warburton who writing a book on outsider art, has submitted the building for consideration saying it is an important example of outsider art and possibly the only such outsider structure in Australia. “It’s not just about the art, it’s about what it gives rise to,” Dr James said. “It helps understand society in general and how people become outsiders. “ Dr James said there were examples of outsider art in other parts of the world where it does not conform with the expected and accepted norms putting it at
odds with rules and regulations laid down by authorities such as municipal councils. Mr Prudhoe faces the possibility of prosecution and fines of more than $60,000 for failing to comply with the building order and the council has reiterated that while it is happy to work with him to get the necessary permits, the structures on council land will need to be removed for public safety. The council’s planning director Andrew Paxton said last week that compliance issues would be dealth with as part of the compliance process which he said was structured in the interest of safety for anyone using the buildings. “Council has met with the group who are supporting Mr Prudhoe and is happy to work with them where possible,” he said. “However, this needs to be done in a timely manner, once again in the interest of public safety.” Mr Prudhoe said he was under enormous stress and his primary focus was getting his property cleaned up for the bushfire season. “I really do need more time, particularly now that it’s close to Christmas and with everyone knocking off work and going on holidays,” he said. He said he was encouraged by the Sydney University pos-

Moving Healesville Victoria is growing fast. That’s why the Victorian Government is improving
HOW MOVING VICTORIA WILL HELP YOU
public transport and roads to build a better transport network for all Victorians. Here’s what it means for Healesville and nearby areas.
NEW TRAINS, NEW CARRIAGES. EAST WEST LINK MAKES IT EASIER TO GET TO AND AROUND MELBOURNE’S CBD. LOCAL ROADS MADE SAFER.
There’s good news with new X’Trapolis trains, new carriages, and upgraded signalling and safety works on all train lines to make rail travel more eficient and reliable for everybody. The Ringwood train line, for example, now enjoys services every ten minutes on weekends between 10am and 7pm, a boon for leisure travellers and shoppers. As part of the Safer Roads Infrastructure Project the Belgrave-Hallam Road at Narre Warren North has seen street lighting improvements, the installation of raised relective pavement markers, guide posts, lexible bollards, and tactile centrelines, and minor kerb works completed. Similarly more than $500,000 has been invested in intersection and run off improvements for the Whittlesea to Yea Road, at Break O’Day and Flowerdale. And for people travelling to and from the region, the new East West Link will be built underneath Alexandra Parade, Melbourne Cemetery and Royal Park: it’s the “missing connection” between two vital freeways, and will make it much easier to get to and around Melbourne. It will also make the transport of agricultural and manufacturing freight from one part of the State to another, and going to or from the Docks, more eficient. A safe and co-ordinated system that combines and connects our roads, railways, and trams, and which takes care of cyclists and pedestrians too, is essential for our growing state. Hundreds of transport projects are underway and more planned for the future; creating jobs to continue Victoria’s strong economic growth. Offering all mainstream movies, art-house, kids’ flicks and other special events, Croydon Cinemas will be welcoming back movie luncheons in February every Wednesday morning at 10.30am - excluding school holidays. Director George Aleksiunas has more than 35 years of experience in the industry mainly in Hoyts, Village, Greater Union and Reading Cinemas. With Melbourne’s best cinema prices and all movies in state-of-theart digital sight and sound technology, movie goers will not be disappointed. In June 2013 the upgrades took place with various other renovations including a re-vamp of the ticket box and candy bar to include a small liquor bar. Mr Aleksiunas said visitors can also enjoy a local or imported beer, great Australian wines, champagne and ciders with a delicious cheese and biscuit box that is available to patrons at an affordable price. While seats are unreserved, visitors may purchase tickets online via the website at www.croydoncinemas.com.au and collect them at a priority on-line collection point at the cinema.
Don’t forget to pick up a gold pass at the Croydon Cinemas - it makes a great Christmas present. 111726

A regional partnership with the TAC and the Victorian Government.
Dangerous habits raise regional risk
Healesville Police officers ran a Random Breath Test (RBT) site last week. 111824
Picture: JESSE GRAHAM
Break-ups in sights By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE Police are increasing their efforts to catch dangerous drivers as the festive season draws closer, running Random Breath Tests (RBTs) and operations to help reduce road trauma. Police officers hit the streets on Thursday 5 December to set up a breath-testing site on the Maroondah Highway, intercepting drivers coming into town from Coldstream.
Over the course of the afternoon, more than 300 drivers were tested, and no drivers were found to have been over their legal blood alcohol content levels. However, Sergeant Stewart Thomson said that officers issued 10 offences for speeding, unregistered cars, unlicensed and suspended drivers. He said that police will be running more operations and working longer hours as Christmas draws closer, doing everything possible
to catch drivers who flaunt the road rules. “With the festive season approaching, we’re asking people to be aware of alcohol and the effects of alcohol,” Sgt Thomson said. “If you drink, don’t drive - police will be on the road, at different locations and at different hours. Just get a lift or use public transport.” The RBT sites and additional operations are part of Victoria Police’s state-wide Summer Stay road enforcement campaign, which aims
to prevent road trauma and remove dangerous drivers from the road. Operation Remove All Impaired Drivers (RAID) took place from 15 November until 8 December, targeting drivers who drink excessive alcohol or use drugs. Operation Break Up will have police focusing on seatbelt offences and distractions, such as mobile phone use and will run until 23 December. www.police.vic.gov.au
RISKY driver behaviour has been put under the microscope by the TAC, in efforts to address driver awareness and the consequences of bad driving habits. The Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) released research on 6 December, after examining the behaviours and attitudes of 92 country drivers with poor driving histories. Repeat speeders, drink drivers and those receiving licence suspension or disqualification were all put under the microscope by the TAC, with focus groups talking about dangerous behaviour. The results showed that, following focus group sessions, the rate of participants regularly breaking the law while driving had decreased. Men in the group who stated they had driven while over the legal alcohol limit in the last six months had dropped from 67 per cent to 61 per cent between the two sessions, while women’s rates dropped from 33 per cent to 19 per cent. TAC CEO Janet Dore said the focus on regional drivers was important, because vehicle drivers are three times more likely to be killed and 40 per cent more likely to receive serious injuries on regional roads than in Melbourne. Ms Dore said that, in regional areas, drivers often think they can get away with taking risks due to less traffic or a belief that police won’t be present. The TAC research showed some of the reasoning for drivers breaking the law. For drink driving, one of the most common answers was “I’m a good driver and in control, despite alcohol consumption”. Whereas those not wearing seatbelts commonly said they were “not in the habit” of wearing them, or that they were uncomfortable. Ms Dore urged drivers to be careful on the roads, to ensure they did not drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol or to speed. “Regardless of whether people think they are in control, they can’t overcome the physics,” she said. “The faster you drive, the less time you have to perceive hazards and the more likely you are to be seriously injured or killed in the event of a collision. The road toll, as of Monday 9 December, stands at 218, down from 262 at the same time last year. For more information, visit www.tac.vic. gov.au.
If you drink or take drugs then drive, if you speed, if you drive unlicensed or an unregistered car, the party’s over.

Mount Evelyn will be keen to continue its winning ways and entrench itself in the top four in a tough clash against Healesville while Hoddles Creek faces the monumental task of travelling to Seville which has found some wind in its sails. Seville dismantled Woori Yallock on the road to itself into the top four and putting the wind up the rest of the competition. After compiling a steady 206 last week, Seville’s big guns came out to play to destroy the hapless Tigers. Ishara Amarasinghe (5/29) and Matt Tilney (3/16) haven’t had the devastating impact on the competition they had in recent seasons, but they announced their intentions in emphatic terms dismissing the home side for 86. AFTER an intense battle between bat and ball on week one of action in D.J. Strachan Shield, in week two most games finished with brilliant bowling. There was a close game at Yarra Junction as the home side was defending 183 against WarburtonMillgrove. The Burras were on the slow Yarra Junction Reserve but unconverted starts from Adam Humphrey (45), Brett Winzer (23), and Ivan Andreuza (21) meant the visitors were dismissed 15 runs short of the target on 168. Coldstream recruit Daniel Sharp (4/31) and spinner Dan Lever (4/37) were the chief destroyers for the Eagles in an important win for their season. The win now puts Yarra Junction within reach of the top four and a win against a wobbling Coldstream would do their chances no harm. Warburton-Millgrove has now slipped from the top four and faces a crucial clash against Woori Yallock to keep it within arm’s reach. The battle for top spot became a fizzer as Healesville proclaimed itself as the front runner leading into the Christmas break with a comprehensive victory against Coldstream. Chasing a gettable 186, the Crocs looked well set in great batting conditions as Danny Adams (28) lead from the front to see the visitors at 1/50 and in control of the contest. The wheels fell off the Crocs’ wagon in a big way as Irish allrounder Brian Scanlon (4/7) and the consistent Dylan Moore (3/2) again proved to be valuable contributors to this Bloods line-up as they ripped through the Crocs. Chance Burridge also proved his wicket taking ability with three wickets of his own to leave the Crocs destroyed for a paltry 72. With their third batting collapse in as many games, the Crocs have some concerns leading into Christmas although they will be confident of overcoming Yarra Junction and keeping their season on track. Healesville has another intriguing battle ahead, this time against Mount Evelyn with which they are evenly matched. Mount Evelyn needed to record a win after many fruitless weeks and they did just that against a hapless Hoddles Creek. Defending 271, the Rovers had no problems disposing of the Wombats with only the consistent Warwick Weir (37) at the top of the order, the hard working Nick

HYUNDAI i30 station wagon is a practical big brother to the i30 five-door hatchback that has already scored plenty of points in the sales race since it was launched early in 2013. Though it’s South Korean, Hyundai calls this i30 variant a ‘Tourer’ rather than a station wagon to give it a European flavour. This vehicle was designed in Germany and is very much aimed at that huge economic area in its chassis dynamics and overall performance. The front of the new Hyundai Tourer wagon has what its designers call Fluidic Sculpture. Potential buyers agree and say the modern lines really stand out from the crowd in what is generally a conservative market segment. Hyundai i30 Tourer is sold in two trim levels - Active and Elite. Ours was an Elite and we found it pleasing to drive and ride in. This really is a practical load carrier that offers excellent value for money, with a recom-

mended price list beginning at $22,990. Unlike the now superseded Hyundai i30 station wagon which had a longer wheelbase than the hatchback variant, the new i30 Tourer shares the hatch’s 2650mm wheelbase. While that’s a long wheelbase for this class, though the wagon isn’t as voluminous it might otherwise have been. However interior and luggage space are still pretty good and potential buyers we spoke to agreed it would usually meet all their needs. That’s because the body of all-new i30 Tourer is 185 mm longer overall than the hatch. It has 528 litres of stowage capacity with rear seats up, a significant increase of 150 litres over the hatch. This volume rises to an im-

Standard across all models are Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and ABS with EBD and Brake Assist. As will all Hyundai models sold downunder in recent years, the i30 Tourer has suspension tuned to Australian driving conditions and drivers’ desires. It’s slightly on the firm side compared with what we would have expected in the South Korean original, but follows the Australian (and European) handling and dynamic trends. We like it, but perhaps try it for yourself if your preference puts comfort over handling ideally over the sort of roads you will be using on a regular basis. If you can live without the image of a European car and the macho looks of an SUV, then you will get a lot of vehicle for a very modest price in the all-new Hyundai i30 Tourer wagon.
