Giving is a great gift GENEROSITY seems to be one of the best gifts that can be given this Christmas. And the team at Wesley Mission Victoria Food for Families Appeal have been overwhelmed by the generosity of locals. Co-ordinator of the appeal Lisa Young said she has been organising the volunteers and overseeing the administration of the appeal which collects donations of non-perishable food, toiletries and cash donations for struggling families. “I really enjoy seeing the generosity of the community and the impact that the donations make on disadvantaged individuals and families,” she said. “What’s most inspiring to me is the strength and resilience of the people we support who are facing extreme challenges such as homelessness. “To be able to support people in crisis is
incredibly rewarding.” Running from November to December each year, the appeal collects donations at Wesley’s two crisis centres, with one located in Ringwood. Ms Young said last year 48 tonnes of food and toiletries were donated. “Once donations start coming in for Food for Families, it’s overwhelming,” she said. “Our staff and volunteers are so busy that it is all hands on deck.” Despite the pace of the job, Ms Young said seeing the positive impact of the donation on client’s lives makes it all worthwhile. To support Food for Families, donations of nonperishable food and toiletries can be made at participating Woolworths and IGA stores across Melbourne, or visit www.foodforfamilies.com.au.

Lights on Christmas display By REBECCA BILLS HEARING the stories of thankful locals motivates Upper Ferntree Gully residents Glenn and Jacinta Pettiford to adorn their house in Christmas lights each year. For more than 12 years the couple has covered their house, located at Ferndale Road, Upper Ferntree Gully, in sparkly lights that are visible from Burwood Highway - making the house a focal point of the town over Christmas. Mr Pettiford said the simple joy the lights bring to residents, especially children, is what makes all the effort worthwhile. “We have had a couple of nice letters from people saying that they have been going through a hard time and it’s made their year,” he said. Mr Pettiford said the house looks so good and is such a focal point because of its position on the hill and their ability to get all the different
heights of lights on their house due to the property’s location. Mrs Pettiford said the motivation for starting the lights was from Glenn’s mother who gave them some money one Christmas. “We started it 12 years ago when Glenn’s mum was still alive and we had been over at Narre Warren to look at lights over there and when we left she gave us $50 and said to go buy something nice,” she said “So we stopped down at the reserve in Ferntree Gully to see the fireworks that were on that night and we were in the Safeway car park and thought let’s go buy a couple of sets of Christmas lights. “And that was the start of it - it’s just grown from there.” The couple said they will have their lights on until Christmas night with lights on until about 10.30pm during the week and a little bit later over weekends.
Time to join the letter club AS THE countdown to Christmas draws near, children across the hills are putting pen to paper to write their wish-list letters to Santa Claus. Receiving more than 150,000 letters to Santa last year, which all received personal replies, the Australia Post is gearing up for another big year. Australia Post’s executive general manager retail services, Christine Corbett, said like previous years, Australia Post is expecting a huge number of letters to be sent to Santa in the lead up to Christmas. All wish-lists should be sent to Santa, North Pole, 9999. For some letter-writing tips, Christmas education resources, activities and interactive games, visits the Australia Post’s Santa Mail website at www.auspost.com.au/education/santamail.

“WATCH this roundabout, said Monbulk Business Network President John Coleman after the Monbulk Christmas Tree was ordered to be taken down. The four-metre high controversial Christmas tree on Main Road/Jordan Road roundabout was constructed by local artist Joost Bakker. It was taken down on Friday night after orders from VicRoads deemed the site ‘unsafe’. VicRoads regional director Adam Maguire said the sculpture was installed without the consent of VicRoads or the council and needed to be removed for safety reasons. “It was blocking sight lines for motorists using the intersection, he said. “In addition, there were unintended consequences of people crossing the road to get close to the sculpture, putting themselves at risk of being involved in an accident. “VicRoads contacted the local trader responsible and explained the safety issues and the need for the sculpture to be removed urgently. Monbulk Business Network stated in a comment on their Facebook page that VicRoads gave the group an ultimatum to have the tree down and paperwork submitted by 5pm or they would take it down and charge the group. “I got the paperwork in record time and Joost who is a very much sought after man made the time to remove the tree, the spokesperson said. “I accept that VicRoads were acting correctly according to criteria. Mr Coleman said the situation was embarrassing because the group never expected the Christmas tree to gain as much attention as it did but worked closely with VicRoads to resolve the situation. “We never expected the coverage to get outside of Monbulk in reality, he said. “In my personal opinion it has
put Monbulk on the map and hopefully in a good way. “Anything we do in the future we will make sure is done officially. Mr Coleman said he apologises to VicRoads and the council for the unintended inconvenience caused. Mr Bakker said he was upset that the tree was pulled down, however understood that it needed to be done. “I didn’t want anyone to get in trouble, he said. “This is the first time I have done anything locally. “Every time I have done something, it’s been controversial - there are always people who don’t like my work and others that love the work. The Christmas tree attracted more than 8000 views on Facebook in the first few days of being erected and has been a constant talking point for locals - gaining national media coverage over the weekend. Mr Bakker said the tree was a piece inspired by local growers and made from recycled chicken wire because it was a bi-product of the growers’ work. “I find the whole idea of Christmas in Australia a bit strange anyway, he said. “The fact that we have fake snow covered Christmas trees is all a bit odd so I’ve always played around artistically with Christmas and used the shape of the Christmas tree in different ways. “I genuinely love my work so I don’t really worry too much about how other people feel. Monbulk Business Network Facebook user Sue Clisby thanked Mr Coleman and Mr Bakker for their boldness in the project on the Facebook page. “One day Monbulk may have some public art that is approved by VicRoads and Yarra Ranges Council, she said.

HOW MOVING VICTORIA WILL HELP YOU
public transport and roads to build a better transport network for all Victorians. Here’s what it means for Healesville and nearby areas.
NEW TRAINS, NEW CARRIAGES. EAST WEST LINK MAKES IT EASIER TO GET TO AND AROUND MELBOURNE’S CBD. LOCAL ROADS MADE SAFER.
There’s good news with new X’Trapolis trains, new carriages, and upgraded signalling and safety works on all train lines to make rail travel more eficient and reliable for everybody. The Ringwood train line, for example, now enjoys services every ten minutes on weekends between 10am and 7pm, a boon for leisure travellers and shoppers. As part of the Safer Roads Infrastructure Project the Belgrave-Hallam Road at Narre Warren North has seen street lighting improvements, the installation of raised relective pavement markers, guide posts, lexible bollards, and tactile centrelines, and minor kerb works completed. Similarly more than $500,000 has been invested in intersection and run off improvements for the Whittlesea to Yea Road, at Break O’Day and Flowerdale. And for people travelling to and from the region, the new East West Link will be built underneath Alexandra Parade, Melbourne Cemetery and Royal Park: it’s the “missing connection” between two vital freeways, and will make it much easier to get to and around Melbourne. It will also make the transport of agricultural and manufacturing freight from one part of the State to another, and going to or from the Docks, more eficient. A safe and co-ordinated system that combines and connects our roads, railways, and trams, and which takes care of cyclists and pedestrians too, is essential for our growing state. Hundreds of transport projects are underway and more planned for the future; creating jobs to continue Victoria’s strong economic growth. Ready for pool fight By MELISSA MEEHAN
Convenor John Faull gives a rundown on the current Olinda Pool situation. Pictures: GREG CARRICK done for this year, I’m fairly confident that we’ll be able to get some funding next time - all the council has to do is keep it open.” Mr Wood said that it would be disappointing if the Olinda Pool was closed permanently considering it was one of the few outdoor pools left in La Trobe.
Scissors threat POLICE are investigating after two youths produced a pair of scissors at a Lilydale bottle shop after being asked for identification while buying alcohol. Detective Senior Sergeant Allan Price said two youths, believed to be underage, were looking at alcohol when they were asked for age identification. They rudely told the shop assistant where to go and continued looking at the alcohol. The young males then grabbed two bottles, and were asked for ID again before producing a pair of scissors and leaving the shop and driving off in a Nissan Pulsar car. Sen Sgt Price said the car is believed to be stolen. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lilydale CIU on 9739 2300.
Pulsars targeted POLICE are warning Nissan Pulsar owners to make sure their cars are locked after a spate raids on the vehicles. Leading Senior Constable Linda Hancock said police believed that thieves were targeting 1998 and 1999 models. On the Eyewatch Yarra Ranges Facebook page, Ldg Sen Const Hancock said those who police believe are responsible have been charged and released on bail with curfew conditions, but were still offending. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

EMERALD police are investigating two thefts over the weekend. In the first a number of petrol power tools were stolen from a garage in Evans Road, Cockatoo including a chainsaw, brushcutter, blowers and some car ramps. The stolen items are believed to be worth more than $6000. Police are also investigating $5000 worth of damage to a newly built house in Chandler Road, Emerald, over the weekend. Leading Senior Constable Frank Bailey said that the house was at lockup stage and had no furniture. “Someone jimmied all the doors and windows causing a fair amount of damage,” Ldg Sen Const Bailey said. “If you are to stop rate increases new infrastructure would be reduced and there would be consequences and (Cr Ross) needs to appreciate that.” Cr Owen said he encouraged discussion around the budget and rates issues. “I appreciate where his stance is but it is a complex issue and for a growing municipality it’s a balance of providing appropriate infrastructure for the community and rural community and balancing the rate increase,” he said. A Facebook page will be launched in the coming weeks where residents can discuss the campaign called Rates Revolt Cardinia Shire.
A MAN has lost his licence for 12 months after slamming into a retaining wall in Tecoma over the weekend. The 20-year-old lost control of his car and slammed into the wall. Belgrave police attended and the man returned a positive preliminary breath test before being taken back to the station where he blew 0.158. His licence was suspended on the spot for 12 months and he will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

“You do it when you can afford it - whether it’s in stages or in a couple of years,” he said. Deputy mayor Brett Owen told the Mail it was the first time he had heard about the campaign. He said the council was pro-actively reducing in percentage increase in the forecast budget. “As a councillor I support the current budget because I am seeing much-needed infrastructure which is required for the local community and that is at a cost,” Cr Owen said. “An important point to make is that you’re either cutting rates and no new infrastructure is a consequence of that.

By DANIELLE GALVIN A RATES revolt campaign has started in the Cardinia Shire - led by one outspoken Central Ward councillor. Cr Collin Ross will lobby his fellow councillors in the lead-up to the budget next year to lower rates. He will be visiting Emerald, Cockatoo and Gembrook in a bid to get 15,000 signatures and show his colleagues what he says residents want. “Residents have appealed to me in despair at the excessive rate increases,” he said. “Because I was elected to be residents’ strong voice on this issue, I will start a campaign and a petition to take it to council on behalf of residents to demand council lower rates. “As I promised when I was elected, my goal is to see rate increases capped at the CPI plus one per cent extra as recommended by the Ratepayers Victoria. “This would make rate increases more predictable and affordable.” As cost of living pressures rise, Cr Ross said rates were one of the few things councillors could control and he was elected on the platform of lowering rates. He rejected claims that rates capped at the CPI would mean kindergartens would have to be closed and important facilities wouldn’t be able to be built.
leased on bail with curfew conditions. He said police did a check on one of the Mooroolbark men charged last week and found he wasn’t home and there were six stolen laptops on the floor. “Police were able to seize them and later arrested the man,” he said. “Two of the computers were identified as being stolen from a school in Rimple near Shepparton.”

A NEWLY-formed committee will fight tooth and nail to save the Olinda Pool. Last month, the Yarra Ranges Council announced that they would close the pool permanently following irreparable cracks and low attendance rates. On Thursday night, members of the community came together to discuss the next plan of attack to save the pool, and a committee was formed. Chairman of the group, John Faull said the meeting was a positive one. “We just want to keep it open,” he said. “We will fight tooth and nail to get the pool fixed.” Mr Faull said the group discussed many things, and even included current councillor Noel Cliff. “Noel seemed pretty passionate about it, and really listened to what we had to say.” He said the group had decided they would do their best to meet with councillors and hopefully change the decision. “We’re meeting with the mayor today (Tuesday),” he said. “So hopefully we’ll be able to make some gains there.” He said the group would fight the closure because it was the community’s right to have a pool. “Why close something that the community wants?” he said. “This is not just about swimming, but firefighting too.” Mr Faull’s fight to save the pool has involved much community outcry and the issue has received a lot of attention on social media. His efforts have also been bolstered by La Trobe MP Jason Wood, who said if the pool was able to stay open, he would do his best to ensure Federal Government funding to help the council maintain it. “I’ve already spoken to Greg Hunt about it,” he said. “And while the budget is already

Safety in store RETAILERS are being urged by WorkSafe to spend time on safety over Christmas. WorkSafe regional director Melinda Collinson is encouraging retailers to take care to prevent customers and staff from injury. WorkSafe visits will focus on housekeeping practices, ladder safety, storage and stock management processes, as well as safety training for young and new workers. “Many businesses put on Christmas casuals for the summer months, so it’s important that young or new employees receive appropriate training and supervision.” Ms Collinson said. “One of the easiest ways to prevent slips, trips and falls is to make sure in-store and back-of-store areas are free from clutter and excess stock,” she said. Ms Collinson urged retailers to have a proactive approach to the safety of staff and customers as hazards are often preventable. For more information on retail safety, go to worksafe.vic.gov.au/retail.

Walk to safety after smash By REBECCA BILLS TWO young men were lucky to walk away with their lives after the driver lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree in Olinda. The P-plate driver was travelling Olinda-Monbulk Road, near Hackets Road earlier this month when it is believed he sped around a corner and lost control of the vehicle. Senior Constable Melinda BaileyTaylor from Belgrave police said both
the driver and the passenger received minor injuries and were lucky to walk away from the crash. “They were lucky the tree they hit had a lot of shrubbery which padded the hit a bit,” she said. “The driver has been summoned to court in relation to a number of traffic matters after admissions to careless driving, speeding and failing to have Pplates.” “One local resident told us they could hear the car coming from the Monbulk
direction before the crash.” Sen Const Bailey-Taylor said the driver was from the western suburbs and did not know the streets in this area well. “Coming into Christmas I ask everyone to slow down, take care and enjoy the Christmas season,” she said. “We don’t want to go to these collisions and families don’t want us there on their doorstep with heart-breaking news. “Stick to the speed limits and be here for Christmas.”

New meaning - with and without By JODIE SYMONDS A LOCAL author is bringing new meaning with her new children’s book. The educational story written and illustrated by Kayleen West is her second book published in 2013. Without Me, is a children’s picture book that depicts a runaway child, who wants to leave home but worries about those he will leave behind. “We’ve all thought of running from difficult situations,” Ms West said. “Without Me was created for our kids, who live in today’s face-paced, internet world.
“I suggest teachers and councillors use Without Me in conjunction with Edward de Bono’s ‘Six Thinking Hats’ to build effective evaluation skills,” she said. Ms West writes and illustrates her children’s books to encourage and equip children to navigate their relationships, emotions and reasoning. Without Me is aimed at children between the ages of five to nine and highlights a sense of belonging and safety with a comical plot. “I created a fun, unassuming story that journeys a child through their inner dialogue, emphasising healthy reflection with a message of value in
reciprocal relationships.” she said. Ms West’s initial childhood dream was to become a writer and illustrator of children’s books however she was encouraged to venture to graphic design. Since 2009, Ms West returned to her dream and became an established author, Without Me being the fourth edition to her repertoire. “It seems I have not outgrown the passion for picture books. I love reading them myself, often having a good giggle in the process,” Ms West said. Ms West is working on three more titles for release in 2014.
MONBULK College students Sam Dekkers and John Rodell are two of 3506 students across Australia to receive Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork awards. Sam (Year 12) and John (Year 10) said they were very honoured to receive the award and were not expecting it. Sam said he had always held leadership positions with the school as Sports Captain in both Year 11 and Year 12 and was also Vice-Captain of the school this year. “I talked at assemblies and had to be a good role model at the school,” he said. “Winning this award was pretty exciting and is a great honour.” The ADF Long Tan Award began in 2006 to encourage leadership and teamwork among school-aged students as an integral part of their personal development and contributions towards enhancing community spirit within the school and broader community. Students in years 10 and 12 were recognised with awards of $250 and $550 respectively, along with a certificate of merit. Assistant principal Eric Markham said the award was a
terrific recognition for what the students have given to the school over the years. “Both have been exemplarily in their behaviour and always willing to help so it is good that they have got some recognition in regards to that,” he said. “They are always looking at doing positive things for the school and for the students - it’s great to have that kind of student in the school setting.” John said winning the award was such a surprise and the money he won will go towards his debutante ball next year. Head of Cadet, Reserve and Employer Support Division Major-General Paul Brereton congratulated the students from around Australia who have been awarded the notable award. “To have so many young Australians recognised by their schools for contributing to their local community and demonstrating leadership qualities is outstanding,” Major-General Brereton said. “To be able to commend the efforts of exceptional young Australians through this award is fantastic. “This year, as with previous years, we have seen an enthusiastic response from secondary colleges across the country.”

Get rid of it
Quit council-bashing
THANKS to the Mail for telling us the name of the person responsible for the hideous pile of rubbish on the Monbulk roundabout which we will have to call “GRIM” - Grotesque Rusted Iron Monstrosity. And he did it for free! This would have to be a huge insult to those religious people who regard this time of year as a serious part of their calendar. Get rid of it pronto. A. Dobie, Monbulk.
HAVING been a regular reader of the local newspaper for a number of years it never ceases to amaze me how narrow-sighted people can become. I can’t help but comment on all the council bashing that takes place, and while I was quite vocal about the rates costs last year, I do actually sympathise with council about the task they have, whatever they do, cannot ever be right in everybody’s eyes. You can only satisfy some of the people some of the time, is very true! My view of things is a little different, having worked in private industry for 45 years I understand that the council needs to be run as a business, which means sticking to its budget and working out its priorities for spending. The councillors’ job (as I see it) is to ensure that the council is held to account for its spending and help sway the spending in what they believe is in the best interests of the community – but not in an adhoc way. It needs to be controlled with due regard to the budget. The rates are a great example here. The councillors, I believe, are fully responsible for the rate rises, not the council. That’s because the council (as a business) prepares its budget and submits it to the councillors for approval, the councillors then have the right of veto. If they choose to accept the spending as submitted, they then by default accept the costs (rate rises) as an outcome. The biggest issue I see though (in common with governments) is that the elected councillors do not understand the decision-making process. Consensus decision-making (the ideal process which involves everybody’s opinion being considered) means you can live with the decision, not necessarily that you agree wholeheartedly with it. But having understood all the issues, while it may not be to your personal liking, you agree to move forward because it’s the right thing to do at that point in time. It’s a difficult and time consuming process, but this should be how all councillor decisions are made - majority rule creates conflict and infighting and no “ownership/solidarity” of decisions. With this background then surely ratepayers must respect decisions made by council as “the best option for the budget forecast”. We can’t all have our own pet projects carried through exactly as we would like to see them, compromise is a way of life, unless you want to see outra-
Poor show on pines WOW! Two councils, two ridiculous decisions! Firstly, I grew up in Ferny Creek/Olinda, had many happy, safe, summers at Olinda pool, and will certainly back John Faull all the way. Secondly, I have lived in Emerald for more than 20 years, and spent much time as a footy mum at Worrell reserve, enjoying the shade and wind break provided by the pines, and, just simply, their majestic presence. Neither Yarra Ranges nor Cardinia councils have engaged proper community consultation, and I do not believe for one minute that either community will be safer for these decisions only poorer for them. Liz Arnold, Emerald.
Too many trees THE main problem with Monbulk street parking between the Police Station and the ANZ bank is there are far too many trees in the road pavement where cars normally park. The ratio is 2.75 trees per car parking space - normally it is one tree per 8-10 car which is the ratio up near the Friend of the Hill where there is fully mounted kerb that should have been used in the new construction and not wasting $20,000-$25,000 fixing up mistakes of just six months ago. The shopkeepers and townspeople were conned by the council design staff and that’s why 16 people objected to their hopeless design and shopkeepers are still losing money. Bruce Johnson, Silvan.
geous rate increases year to year. In summary then, can we stop council bashing a bit by encouraging our councillors to be more public in their activities at council via positive reporting in the local newspaper about events considered at council meetings, not publicity photoshoots about their personal endeavours. Hopefully, this would quell some of the silly and ongoing criticisms we continue to read about week by week like the Monbulk refurbishment/Maccas/Olinda pool/Worrell reserve trees etc etc. Because all councillors would be singing off the same hymn sheet and voicing the same opinion. Alan Jennings, Mount Dandenong.
Debate trade deal I HAVE recently learned about the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP), a so called Free Trade Agreement (FTA) currently being negotiated by the Federal Government. If signed, it would allow the government to be sued by corporations in an overseas tribunal, known as an Investor Sate Dispute Settlement (ISDS) for making decisions that ’harm’ their ’expected profits’, even if the move is in the public interest. Phillip Morris Tobacco company is currently suing Australia after losing their case in the High Court, using an existing agreement with Hong Kong that contains ISDS provisions. The vast majority of the TPP is not about trade at all. It would extend patents on pharmaceutical drugs meaning less access to cheap generic medicines. It would allow for things such as plants, animals, biological processes and surgical procedures to be patented. It would not allow the labelling of critical health information such as genetically modified foods. It gives incentive to off-shore Australian jobs, and would not allow the government to give preference to Australian companies over foreign companies, or guarantee a certain percentage of domestic content, goods or services, ie. in the media, agriculture or car industries, etc. It would also extent copyright laws and could force internet service providers to police copyright rules by reporting breaches, removing online content and even denying access to internet users. All of this would be enforceable by law, but
it fails to include such integral points such as labour rights. It would not only be devastating to Australia but other TPP signatory countries around the Pacific Rim, benefitting largely transnational corporations based in the US. It may have the support of a handful of Australian companies, but it would come at the expense of our wallets, our health, and our ability to democratically govern. The Government wants to rush this agreement through as soon as possible without public debate, and the details are secret, what we know so far is from leaks. Look up Australian Fair Trade and Investment Network (AFTINET) and TPP Australia online for more information. Our MP Jason Wood needs to hear what you think about this agreement so that he can act on our behalf. This is an issue that demands attention and discussion by the public. Jayne Alexander, Selby.
Deals on wheels THE automotive industry has been at the heart of Victoria’s manufacturing for decades supporting more than 30,000 local jobs. The industry is of critical importance to the Victorian economy as it drives jobs, investment, technology transfer, innovation and skills. Approximately four jobs are created in Victoria for every person directly employed by GM Holden, Ford and Toyota. Only 13 countries world-wide have the capacity to undertake the entire process of motor vehicle manufacturing from concept, design through to sales on the showroom floor, Australia is one of them. As a result, our skills in design and engineering are world-class. Premier Denis Napthine and Minister for Manufacturing David Hodgett need to make a stand and fight the Abbott Government who want to abandon Victoria’s 30,000 workers employed in the industry. Tony Abbott is intent on destroying Australia’s automotive industry by cutting $500 million from the Automotive Transformation Scheme. Denis Napthine needs to make a stand against the Abbott Government and support Victoria’s 30,000 workers employed within the car manufacturing industry and demand that Mr Abbott supports our industry. Adem Somyurek, Shadow Minister for Manufacturing.

Firey meeting By REBECCA BILLS THE office of local MP Christine Fyffe was surrounded by local firefighters and their families joining forces to advocate greater rights. The 27 crews from around the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges gathered last Saturday showing their support for firefighters cancer legislation which makes it easier for career and volunteer firefighters to get workers’ compensation if they suffer cancer from the job. Representative of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Peter Beaton said all major parties in the Australian Parliament supported this kind of legislation for federally employed firefighters two years ago. “The Tasmanian and South Australian Parliaments have passed legislation and since then the Western Australian Parliament has introduced legislation for career firefighters with a Bill to cover volunteers due early in 2014,” he said. “The firefighters cancer law is presumptive legislation - if you have a certain number of years’ service as a firefighter and it’s one of the 12 typical firefighter cancers, the law would presume it to be work-related so you can concentrate on treatment and recovery instead of a possible court case. “They (firefighters) are not asking for anything extra, just the removal of an unfair barrier to accessing the compensation to which they are already entitled.” Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe
The CFA volunteers listen to the State Members. 111817 Picture: GREG CARRICK said she was pleased to meet with the firefighters from across the Hills on Saturday. “The firefighters who participated in the family rally on Saturday were very professional and cordial, and their representatives clearly articulated their concerns,” she said. “As the member for Evelyn, I will be advocating on behalf of our CFA members to the relevant ministers and to parliament. “We are fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers protecting us from bushfires and other disasters.” Lilydale CFA captain Warren Davis said there were 60,000 volunteers within the CFA across the country and if every one of those voted they could bring down a government.
“This is a very important issue and we need to get the message out,” he said. “We have had a very good discussion with Member for Evelyn Christine Fyffe who has given us a few good leads which we are going to follow up. “Obviously there was no result on the day, but Christine Fyffe now knows why we are pushing for this and at the end of the day it is for our families’ benefit that this is passed.” Captain Davis said they were now planning to meet with other government representatives in the new year to continue their fight for the legislation to be passed. He also said that during the gathering on Saturday morning no fire station in the area was left unattended, with vehicles in every area manned and ready for any firefighting activity.

Bank warms to RSL By REBECCA BILLS MOUNT Evelyn RSL has been granted $3300 by the Mount Evelyn Community Bank for a new air-conditioning unit. Last Thursday Mount Evelyn Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank manager Leanna Vaytauer handed over the cheque to Mount Evelyn RSL president Rodger Boness and said the bank’s point of difference is that its profit goes back into the community. Mr Boness said the airconditioning unit will be well received by hall users, especially the elderly, who have been looking at alternative meeting spaces because of how hot the space gets. “Now that it’s summer, the sun sets in the west and beats down on the far wall of the hall,” he said. “A lot of people that use our hall are senior members and it’s very, very appropriate and very fitting for the Bendigo Community Bank to be involved in ensuring their comfort while in the use of this community asset. “The Mount Evelyn community relies on all of our community groups, and in this town, all of those groups work together as one.” Mr Boness said the Mount Evelyn RSL Hall was built from money that Doctor Bill Hardy and his wife Gwen donated so the RSL and other community groups such as the Mount Evelyn Senior Cit-

Ms Vaytauer said the community bank understands that clubs like the RSL have to raise their own funds and bank members enjoy being able to support them when they can. “The RSL are very good supporters of us and that’s
how we work,” she said. “It’s got to be a two-way street so the more support we get as a community bank from the local community, the more we can actually put into the community through grants and sponsorship.” Talks are already in place for getting the new air-conditioning unit installed as soon as possible.

Friends all said goodbye By JESSE GRAHAM HE WAS described by many as an inspirational and kind-hearted young man. Last week, almost 1000 friends and family gathered at Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn to farewell 17-year-old Josh Matthews who died of a suspected asthma attack on 27 November. People packed into the auditorium of the church, filling the main room and three overflow rooms, as many speakers took to the stage to share their memories of the teenager. Known to his family and friends as ‘Turbo’, Josh was well-known to many through being co-captain at Lilydale Heights Secondary College and a member of Coldstream Football Club. A group of five friends spoke briefly on their experiences with Josh, though they all found a common thread when speaking of his compassion and care for anything with a heartbeat.
“He was always first to help and the last to leave,” said one friend. “Through the darkest days of my life, Josh was always here for me,” said another. His father, Roger Matthews, summed up the sentiments and adoration of so many when he said that Josh was a person that he could say “I am better for having met that person”. “He cared genuinely. He never met a stranger, only new friends.” An outpouring of grief flowed from the local community since Josh’s death, with 6183 people liking a Facebook page in his memory and hundreds of family and friends gathering at Lillydale Lake shortly after his death for a balloon release. Rohan Dredge ran the service at Discovery Church and read out sentiments from those who could not attend, or could not speak on the day. Coldstream Football Club hosted a wake after the funeral had finished.

Hi-tech leap in class By JODIE SYMONDS SILVAN students are learning in leaps and bounds with the introduction of new iPads in the classroom. Silvan Primary School acting principal Leigh Johnson said the technology had already made a huge improvement in the students’ grades. The school received the Apple iPads two weeks ago after students completed an online survey about new technology they would like at the school. Most subjects for grades three to six will use the iPads, but a major focus will be the computer based subjects. “The iPads have assisted the students in such a short period. Their literary skills and communication have all improved,” Mr Johnson said. “This will really add to the quality of learning that is happening right across the school,” teacher Corinne said. “This will mean that we can do research at our table,” student Rowan said. “They have already been tak-
ing photos of the school and making movies on iMovie to represent Silvan Primary then we showcase them in the newsletter,” Mr Johnson said. Silvan Primary School implemented eSmart to assist their students to learn about cyber safety. The primary school has a green-amber-red approach to cyber safety using the iPads to assist the students be aware of what is and isn’t acceptable online. “We also teach them about keeping personal information confidential online, and being wary of what they post online because it does stay around forever,” Mr Johnson said. The students all have the opportunity to create their own Wiki Page where they can work share ideas, photos and videos with each other. Parents and staff have been supportive of the iPad as the school hopes to receive more iPads in the future. For more information about eSmart program please visit https://www.esmartschools.org.au/cyber_risks/Pages/default.aspx

Crime novelist finds her destiny By JODIE SYMONDS
Novel publishing contract winner Sandi Wallace. 111755
LOCAL crime writer Sandi Wallace’s dream of becoming an author has become thrillingly true. The Mount Dandenong writer’s novel was recognised at the prestigious Scarlet Stiletto Awards for women in late November. The Scarlet Stiletto Awards competition allows Australian female crime writers to enter short stories and win awards for their work. Among 2500 entrants with competing short stories, Ms Wallace won the Best Investigative Prize out of 18 writers in her category. More than a month after awards night, Ms Wallace was approached by publishing company Clan Destine Press wanting to publish her novel. “I had been working on my novel for about five years because I really needed to work out my writing style,” she said. Ms Wallace said she found her passion for crime writing as a sixyear-old and had always wanted to become an author. She entered numerous short story competitions and continued to write about crime, inspired by television and books she had read as a child. “I always had an interest in crime. I started writing when I was a teenager then I just knew I wanted to publish a book,” she said. Ms Wallace had previously submitted her novel before the Scarlet Stiletto Awards night but didn’t have any luck. She said a publishing company
was very interested in the concept of her novel but said she needed to work on her writing. “It was so exciting when publisher Lindy Cameron and Clan Destine said ‘I want your book’,” she said. “I really wanted to embrace Australian writing - not to be ashamed of it.” “This experience allowed me to learn my own style of writing and be able to share the experience. “I’m from Mount Dandenong so I’m really drawn to country Victoria with wider readership,” she said. Her novel is based in Daylesford but has aspects which were influenced by her own life in the ranges. Ms Wallace said the characters in her novel were derived by various traits and personalities of people she knows and reveals a darker side of police procedural in country Victoria. “The main characters are all very different. Georgie Harvey is a writer from Richmond who is going through personal angst,” she said. “Then there’s Susan who is a retired farmer who is still grieving over her husband who was murdered. “They all experience different things, some are scared of change but would like to do something different and we then read what occurs.” Ms Wallace is currently writing her third book that she said will feature as part of a series, with the first instalment to be released early next year.

Birthday boy tease By REBECCA BILLS
Kristof Kaczmarek and Ben Nicholas will be facing off as Timothy Timmonyy and Simon Matthews in Down an Alley Filled With Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Cats. 111822
Alley act for comedy cats By JESSE GRAHAM A TWO-act comedy thriller will be taking the stage at Healesville’s Memo Hall over the coming week, with two characters matching wits in search of treasure. Down an Alley Filled With Cats, a play created by Warwick Moss, will be performed by Exit Theatre Incorporated with a preview on Thursday, before the big opening night on Friday 13 December. The play takes place in an old, cluttered bookstore, owned by Timothy Timmony (played by Kristof Kaczmarek), an elderly, wellcultured Polish immigrant. Simon Matthews (played by Ben Nicholas), a young and un-cultured adventurer in search of fortune, enters and confronts Timothy about a book he’s searching for. The plot begins to take shape when Timothy lies and says he has sold the book and the two end up locked in the store overnight to match wits. Mr Kaczmarek, who also directs the play, said that his character, Timothy, plays games as part of his life philosophy and that the play is ultimately centred on greed and what it means. Down an Alley Filled With Cats has been described as a mental maze, where one riddle leads to another and unexpected endings lie in wait as the characters struggle through their constant game. The play will be performed from 7.30pm on Thursday 12, Friday 13, Saturday 14, Thursday 19, Friday 20 and Saturday 21 December and from 2pm on Sunday 15 and 22 December. Tickets are $25 full price or $22 for concession holders, with $10 tickets to the preview evening. For more information, visit www.yarraranges. vic.gov.au, call 1300 368 333 or visit the Memo Hall at 235 Maroondah Highway, Healesville.

ANTHONY Callea is spending his birthday at Westfield Knox this Friday after releasing his first Christmas album, This is Christmas. Scheduled to perform on Channel Nine’s The Today Show in the morning, Mr Callea will fly straight to Melbourne for his Westfield Knox performance. “It’s really a bit of a tease only coming home for one night but I’ll be back a week later for a decent stay,” he said. “I’m actually really excited about spending my birthday at Knox when my record company asked me the date I would like to do it I thought it would be really nice if I could spend my birthday at home. “I haven’t been home for so long and I am so looking forward to it.” Mr Callea said that for a singer, one of the most exciting times is when they get to the point of releasing a Christmas album. “If it was up to me, I would have Christmas six months of the year and this is a really exciting Christmas not just because of my album, but it is my 10th consecutive year at Carols by Candlelight,” he said. “In this album I really wanted to
the recreate my performances from the Carols so I brought in the 55 piece orchestra and even my partner Tim (Campbell) who performed Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas with me. “You do get Goosebumps when you record an album like this, it’s the best way to do it - especially being able to do alongside my longtime friend John Foreman.” This is Christmas is a follow up to Mr Callea’s first album with ABC music, Thirsty, which was released in April this year. Mr Callea said it has been a very busy year for him with releasing his two albums and touring with Grease - The Musical and he said he was looking forward to 2014. “I started the year opening for Mariah Carey and it’s been pretty much non-stop ever since,” he said. “I’m looking forward to, once Grease has finished next year, concentrating on my live work and will get back in the studio when I am ready.” Anthony Callea is performing live at Westfield Knox on Friday 13 December at 4pm outside the front of The Coffee Club. Westfield Knox is at 425 Burwood Highway, Wantirna South.

WANDIN Yallock Primary School’s grade five and six students get an A-plus for event management after organising a market that raised $226.45 for the school’s sponsored child. The group’s logistic skills were tested when their outdoor market was driven indoors by a torrential downpour. But they came through brilliantly, setting up the various stalls and entertainment in the stadium and maintained the atmosphere of a vibrant market place. The money raised will assist Nhlalwenhle who lives in Africa and is sponsored through World Vision.
Art museum open for celebrations HUNDREDS of visitors flocked to TarraWarra Museum of Art (TWMA) last weekend for celebrations and activities to cap off a decade in the community. TWMA’s Free Public Open Weekend was held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December to celebrate the museum’s 10th anniversary of opening. The museum opened its doors for the first time on 3 December 2003 and the open weekend featured a number of activities for visitors to revel in. Kids big and small lined up to take part in a cricket clinic, run by Healesville Cricket Club, while others sat enthralled as Jason Bell from Healesville Sanctuary visited with wedgetailed eagle, Jess. Pop-up art talks were held in the museum, telling the stories of selected works by landscape artist Russell Drysdale whose works currently adorn the walls of TWMA. There was a deeper connection behind some of the events, with the cricket clinic celebrating Drysdale’s famous work The Cricketers, and the wedgetailed eagle visit marking new collaboration between TWMA and the Healesville Sanctuary. The museum’s current exhibition, Future Memorials, acknowledges the area’s local
Indigenous heritage with the Coranderrk Aboriginal Station, where Healesville Sanctuary currently sits. TWMA director Victoria Lynn said that about 600 people had attended on the Saturday and that a new documentary about TWMA will be launched in the near future. PIPPIN
Breed: DLH Sex: Male Age: 4 Years 6 Months Colour: Ginger
Name: Pippin Breed: Terrier x Sex: Female Age: 5 Years Colour: Black & White
A little about me: Like his brother Jerry, Tom is also an easy going fella, he absolutely loves kids and is always up for playtime. He really likes his food, so you will need to keep an eye on my weight. A home with his brother would be ideal.

EVERLY BROTHERS
Brief History: Jerry, together with his brother Tom, has been at Animal Aid for some time now and really need to find a home. An easy going guy, he gets along very well with children and is pretty fond of his feline friends, so a pretty cool cat really.
Name: Jazzy Breed: Maltese X Sex: Female Age: 5 Years Colour: Black & White
A little about me:
A little about me:
Pippin is exceptionally cute but she is also a little shy. Along with her friend Jazz, Pippin was surrendered, so ideally we would love for Pippin and her friend to be adopted together.
This little girl is as smart as she is cute. She came in with her friend Pippin and would love to go to a forever home together. Jazzy is a softie and her big, brown, pleading eyes will make you go weak at the knees.

Brilliance of their bowling AFTER an intense battle between bat and ball on week one of action in D.J. Strachan Shield, in week two most games finished with brilliant bowling. There was a close game at Yarra Junction as the home side was defending 183 against Warburton-Millgrove. The Burras were on the slow Yarra Junction Reserve but unconverted starts from Adam Humphrey (45), Brett Winzer (23), and Ivan Andreuza (21) meant the visitors were dismissed 15 runs short of the target on 168. Coldstream recruit Daniel Sharp (4/31) and spinner Dan Lever (4/37) were the chief destroyers for the Eagles in an important win for their season. The win now puts Yarra Junction within reach of the top four and a win against a wobbling Coldstream would do their chances no harm. Warburton-Millgrove has now slipped from the top four and faces a crucial clash against Woori Yallock to keep it within arm’s reach. The battle for top spot became a fizzer as Healesville proclaimed itself as the front runner leading into the Christmas break with a comprehensive victory against Coldstream. Chasing a gettable 186, the Crocs looked well set in great batting conditions as Danny Adams (28) lead from the front to see the visitors at 1/50 and in control of the contest. The wheels fell off the Crocs’ wagon in a big way as Irish all-rounder Brian Scanlon (4/7) and the consistent Dylan Moore (3/2) again proved to be valuable contributors to this Bloods line-up as they ripped through the Crocs. Chance Burridge also proved his wicket taking ability with three wickets of his own to leave the Crocs destroyed for a paltry 72. With their third batting collapse in as many games, the Crocs have some concerns leading into Christmas although they will be confident of overcoming Yarra Junction and keeping their season on track. Healesville has another intriguing battle ahead, this time against Mount Evelyn with which they are evenly matched. Mount Evelyn needed to record a win after many fruitless weeks and they did just that against a hapless Hoddles Creek. Defending 271, the Rovers had no problems disposing of the Wombats with only the consistent Warwick Weir (37) at the top of the order, the hard working Nick Bark (24) at the end, offering any resistance against the well rounded Rover attack. Experienced pair Chris Anderson (3/16) and Kane Jones (3/43) were the chief destroyers in an even bowling performance to have the Wombats bowled out well short of the target on 131. Mount Evelyn will be keen to continue its winning ways and entrench itself in the top four in a tough clash against Healesville while Hoddles Creek faces the monumental task of travelling to Seville which has found some wind in its sails. Seville dismantled Woori Yallock on the road to itself into the top four and putting the wind up the rest of the competition. After compiling a steady 206 last week, Seville’s big guns came out to play to destroy the hapless Tigers.
Ishara Amarasinghe (5/29) and Matt Tilney (3/16) haven’t had the devastating impact on the competition they had in recent seasons, but they announced their intentions in emphatic terms dismissing the home side for 86. Seville will look for a quick kill against Hoddles Creek to have the rest of the competition on notice, Woori Yallock will face Warburton-Millgrove in a clash for the finals. D.J. Strachan Shield Healesville 186 (Stock 43, Hamer 37, Scanlon 35, Jonson 3/24, M Stark 3/41, Bayliss 3/39) d Coldstream 72 (Adams 28, Scanlon 4/7, Moore 3/2, Burridge 3/16) and 2/47 (Fritsch 13, S Phillips 10, B Chandler 2/9). Fair ytale bid at title By REBECCA BILLS DREAMGIRLS cheerleaders from Ferntree Gully have won a bid to perform at the 2014 World Championships at the Disney World, Florida. The Ferntree Gully All-Girl Level Six cheerleading squad from DreamTyme Stars Cheer and Dance competed at the Australian All Star National Cheerleading Championships in Melbourne late last month. The club entered 17 routines in their first ever National Championships winning the bid to travel to the world championships in late April. Coach Natalie Commons said she was “exceptionally proudâ€? of the young athlete’s achievements and cannot wait to take them to Florida. “The girls are beyond happy, they are so excited - we cannot wipe the smiles off their faces,â€? she said. “The girls are now going gung-ho
at training and we can’t get them out of the gym. “I think we will do really well in Florida, we have a very strong team who are dedicated and committed. Throughout 2013 Ms Commons was also the assistant coach of the Team Australia All-Girl Level Five cheerleading team that took home a silver medal when competing against the world’s best at the ICU World Championships. Ms Commons said there is a lot of hard work ahead for the team but also exciting times. “This is such a great opportunity and something I feel very privileged and lucky to be a part, especially with these young ladies that have so much talent, ability and potential, she said. “These young athletes are a really inspiring group of girls and are great role models for the younger girls who are interested in getting into the sport and getting active.

Athlete Jess Binion who will be travelling to the United States with the team said she cannot wait to represent
DreamTyme at the event. “I was so excited when the world’s bids were announced and we found out that we won, she said. DreamGirls Co-Captain Briegh Nish said it was thrilling to start the preparation for the trip.
“DreamTyme is not just a club, it is another family, she said. The girls will travel to the US in April and spend a week training in Orlando before moving into their accommodation at Disney World, ready to compete for the world title.
Dashing captain Dev’s 111 leads Shark attack ASSOCIATION Country Week captain and leader of the Johnson Park Sharks, Andrew Devenish scored his first ton of the season in Reeves Shield in the local derby against arch rivals Knoxfield. Playing for the annual Paffett Shield named in honour of the late Mark Paffett, the Sharks boasted an impressive 9/302 at stumps on day one with Devenish mastering 111. Support also came from Nottinghamshire all-rounder Martin Weightman with 66 while Knights’ bowlers Mitch Burley and Jayden Scanlan toiled hard for four wickets apiece. At Kings Park, home side Upper Gully struggled against Ferntree Gully and were bowled out for 157 in the 72nd over. Gully Blues paceman and third gamer Patrick Turner snared 3/15 and offspinner Mohammed Farrukh claimed 3/53 as the Kings were best served by Jay Colee with 63 and Marcus McDonald (40). Ferntree Gully was required to face five overs before stumps and were 1/18 at the close of play but on the way to a win. Monbulk travelled to Eildon Park but could only register 126 against the Panthers. The match brought together opposing captains and brothers, Cameron and Shane Cosstick, for the first time since Shane was recruited from Eildon Park to Monbulk two seasons ago. Eildon Park part-time bowler Ben Morris was delighted to add Cosstick’s prize wicket to his list of victims as he took 3/14. Medium pacer Kyle Snyman also collected identical figures and in reply, the hosts were 2/80 and well in control as keeper-batsman Nathan Hicks (43 not out) will be heading for a century next week. Belgrave’s poor batting form continued against Upwey Tecoma as Jake Evans and Lee
Bianchi knocked the Magpies over for 132. Dinusha Fernando was the only batsman to get a start with 39. In Decoite Shield, Mountain Gate’s Dwayne Bowden fell in love with the Narre Warren East Oval scoring 106 from a total of 206 against Auravale. Bowden then bagged 4/17 as he left the Lakers floundering at 6/41 at stumps. South Belgrave had St Johns Tecoma in hot water early at 4/30 before the innings was rescued by veterans Adam Lovell and Dean Palandri who brought up his century in the last over of the day. The Saints reached 8/228 in what should be a tight game. Knox City has set Lysterfield 186 with Singh falling two short of three figures and Tim Chivers in top form with four wickets. In the final match, The Basin’s 238 looks too many runs for bottom side Rowville. Danny Rundle and Jayden Turcinovic scored half centuries for the Bears.
