Doctors at the hospital’s Anaesthetic Department have bought more than 40 gifts totalling $1000 for children, which they donated to MacKillop Family Services last week. Footscray MP calls for return of planning controls ...
By CHARLENE MACAULAY FOOTSCRAY MP Marsha Thomson has called on State Planning Minister Matthew Guy to relinquish his planning authority over Footscray’s CBD. Ms Thomson publicly called on Mr Guy to return planning powers to Maribyrnong City Council in Parliament recently, saying the minister was simply rubber stamping every major development without considering the amenity of the area. “Since the minister has held this position, there has been a total disconnect between him and the community over a lot of planning work done in relation to the way in which Footscray is developed,” she said.
“No actual planning is taking place in Footscray - the minister just says ’yes’ to every major development. “Two 31-storey developments are being built right on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, despite the minister himself having said that the Maribyrnong and Yarra rivers should be protected from these developments. “I urge him to give this power back to the council, which will take into account the needs of the community.” But Mr Guy said he was simply continuing on in a role created by the Labor Government when they were in power. “Marsha Thompson is a complete hypocrite given that in 2007 she said that the then Planning Minister’s involvement in Footscray was a ‘commit-
ment to rejuvenation’ of Footscray,” Mr Guy said. “The Labor Government made themselves the responsible authority for Footscray, not myself and the Coalition Government. “I am the planning authority for this area as the previous government determined that the State was best placed to manage change in an activities area like Footscray. “In 2007 the council and local MP Marsha Thomson all welcomed this decision. The only thing that has changed since then is the State Government. “Calls for the reinstatement of the council as the responsible authority are clearly just a political dispute and not one based on real community desire.”
Meanwhile, Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the council preferred if the Inner Melbourne Action Plan Implementation Committee, which the council recently joined, would take over planning authority. IMAP also includes the Cities of Melbourne, Yarra, Stonnington and Port Phillip. “We don’t get consulted enough, the way the system works right now,” Cr Miles said. “Maribyrnong City Council would like to be involved at an earlier stage, to a much greater degree, in planning in central Footscray, particularly Josephs Rd.”

AS A qualified dietician, Renee Del Grosso knows how important it is for people to adopt a healthy diet. The 23-year-old Keilor Downs resident is so keen to get that message across that she volunteers weekly at Footscray’s Western Hospital with the Volunteer Meals Assistance Program. Program volunteers offer one-on-one lunch-time support, seven days a week to patients specifically identified as having difficulty feeding themselves. Volunteer assistance ranges
from helping patients set-up, open containers, and providing verbal prompts, to feeding patients who require full assistance to eat and drink. “Throughout my course I learnt that it’s one thing to make sure that patients have nutritionally adequate meals that meet their specific dietary requirements, but it doesn’t really serve its purpose unless the patients actually eat the food,” Ms Del Grosso said. “Sometimes that can be a real challenge for hospital patients, particularly the elderly. “I identified this program as really important, because you
get to help patients achieve their recovery goals in a comfortable, stress-free environment,” she said. “It also provides them with some social stimulation and some encouragement at meal times, and that can help to improve their appetite.” Ms Del Grosso has been volunteering for the past two years, and encourages others to take the plunge. YARRAVILLE’S pop-up park will return just in time for Christmas after traders agreed to foot the bill for this year’s installation. A committee of Yarraville businesses, led by Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith, will resurrect the pop-up park and also deliver a Summer Sun Days program that is expected to include live music, book readings, yoga and other family friendly activities. The news comes two weeks after Maribyrnong City Council shot down a motion to reinstate the pop-up park this year. The council has committed to a roving pop-up park program over the next few years, with parklets in Barkly Village earmarked for this summer. Mr Smith told Star the council agreed to support traders re-open the pop-up park if they took over the operating costs and running of the installation. Mr Smith said the traders would use some of the existing pieces of furniture and pots from the previous pop-up parks, and would foot the bill for the rest. “The council’s really come on board and reached out to help make it happen and the fact that the community will be there doing their part means this really is a win-win,” he said. Mayor Grant Miles added: “I think it’s great. “A couple of things that we asked of the traders in Yarraville is that they make it a little bit shorter to give the West Footscray pop-up park a chance to succeed. “The other thing is that it will be alcohol free. “The traders that have been unhappy with it in the past have said that residents can go to a bottle shop, buy a six pack of beer, go and sit in the park and don’t frequent any of the bars. “We’re getting rid of that problem.” The Yarraville pop-up park is expected to return before Christmas and will run until the end of February - and a permanent installation could also be on the horizon. Cr Miles said he fully supported that section of Ballarat St being blocked permanently to traffic for a permanent pop-up park to be in place.

Death toll drops By XAVIER SMERDON THE number of people being killed on Brimbank’s roads has fallen by almost half, indicating that they are the safest they have been in several years. The latest TAC road safety statistics were released last week showing that all but one suburb in the West had seen a drop in road-related fatalities. Brimbank had a drop of 44 per cent when compared to last year and now has a five-year average of seven deaths on the municipality’s roads. Wyndham had the biggest decrease after two horror years where nine people were killed consecutively in 2011 and 2012, to see a de-
crease of 56 per cent. The figures, which compare the 12 months to October this year, also indicated that Melton had seen a reduction in fatalities of 50 per cent from 2012 to 2013. When comparing this year to 2011 the drop is even more dramatic at 63 per cent. Maribyrnong also had a drop of 25 per cent. The only suburb where the number of road deaths increased was Hobsons Bay, which went from just one in 2011 to three this year. Chairman of RoadSafe Westgate, which advocates for safer roads and driver education in the West, Jim Giddings, told Star a higher police
presence was behind the shift. “Two things have contributed to this reduction and they are a greater community awareness of issues like speeding and hooning, and a greater presence from the police,” Mr Giddings said. “There is no doubt that when we have a more visible police presence that people do slow down.” Mr Giddings said that the message of road safety was slowly sinking in to young drivers. “Slowly but surely we are seeing results, but it’s a lot of hard work,” he said. “We need to continually work at it to bring the wider community on board and to maintain their interest.”
Mr Giddings said the West had a long way to go before it would be able to shake its image as a hoon and dangerous driving hotspot. “I don’t want to paint a bleak picture of the West, but when you look at the impoundment figures, a higher proportion of those are in the Western Suburbs, and particularly Melton,” he said. “They are not going down, but what that tells us is that we have more police on our roads and they are catching more dangerous drivers. “Hoon activity is continuing and we need to be more than vigilant.” Hoon drivers can be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Pledge on schools By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE SKY High Working Group has welcomed a commitment from the State Opposition to investigate the need for a new school in the Seddon, Kingsville and Yarraville area. The Opposition has pledged to work with local schools and parents to improve education facilities and options for high school schools across the SKY region, after Shadow Minister for Education James Merlino, Footscray MP Marsha Thomson and Williamstown MP Wade Noonan attended SKY High’s 10-year anniversary rally. “Ignoring a problem won’t make it go away, that’s why an incoming Labor Government will properly plan for the expected growth in population across the region,” Ms Thomson said. “Labor will approach this task in a responsible way to ensure that other secondary schools in the region are part of a collaborative solution to improve educational outcomes for all local students.” SKY High president Melissa Horne called on all political parties to deliver more public high school options for local families as part of their 2014 election platform. “More than 200 parents and kids joined our march showing the need for a new high school option is as strong as ever,” Ms Horne said. “The Opposition’s announcement is a welcome first step and shows that some politicians are prepared to listen carefully to our case. “Next year is an election year and we need every local family to think about doing their bit to help deliver a new high school for the area.” The SKY area used to be served by the Footscray Yarraville High School and a Catholic High School until the early 1990s, when they were shut down by the Kennett Government.
Rail link on track THE Regional Rail Link (RRL) project will be going full steam ahead over the summer holidays to take advantage of lower commuter numbers. The $4.8 billion project will reach a major milestone on 22 December with the opening of two new platforms at Southern Cross station and the project’s first section of dedicated V/Line tracks. This means trains on the Geelong line will have a clear run to Southern Cross and won’t have to wait behind metropolitan trains. Following this, a construction blitz from 28 December to 19 January will help the next stages of the project begin to take shape, including: The revamping of Footscray and Sunshine train stations, including new platforms on the Irving St side of Footscray train station; The removal of the Anderson Rd level crossing; and The demolition of the old Nicholson Street bridge and the installation of the new bridge. “With Regional Rail Link on budget and ahead of schedule, passengers are going to progressively start seeing benefits well before the project’s completion,” Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said. “Over late December and early January, public transport patronage reduces by up to a half, and doesn’t return to normal levels until the end of February. A combination of shuttle train services and replacement buses will operate along the Sunbury line while the works are carried out. Science students create big bang By CHARLENE MACAULAY THIS December, Victoria University is serving up science with a bang. The 2013 VU Science spectacular family night will showcase the Professor Science Troupe who will perform explosions and fire tricks along with other science demonstrations. The free show this Thursday will
run for 70 minutes and will be followed by hands-on science activities for parents and children. VU Lecturer in Foundation Studies Nick Athanasiou said the showcase was designed specifically to inspire students and generate a love of science. “It’s great for many families because often this is their first experience with science,” he said.
“Their usual reaction after the first experiment is amazing. We work with the audience to give them a hands-on experience, which is much more appealing than traditional high-brow science events.” The troupe is made up of VU students studying for a degree in science and education and the show provides them with teaching and presentation experience which is in-
valuable to their education. The troupe has been travelling to schools around Victoria and interstate for the past five years, promoting science through a range of amazing demonstrations. The VU Science Spectacular will run this Thursday from 6pm at the Footscray Park campus, building L, level 1, room 14.

Hammer sends Santa shows his sensitive side raider running By CHARLENE MACAULAY
A SERVICE station attendant scared a gunman away during an attempted armed robbery in Braybrook when he pulled out a hammer. Police are appealing for witnesses following the attempted armed robbery at a service station in Braybrook on 2 November around 10.30pm. The man, believed to be in his 40s, walked into the service station with a firearm and made demands for cash when another staff member produced a hammer. The offender fled the scene empty handed and was last seen running along Ballarat Road towards Sunshine. The police described the man as Caucasian in appearance, 40 to 45-years-old and 178cm tall with a medium build.
He was wearing a black peaked cap with a red ACDC logo, a grey chequered hooded jacket, green Tshirt, blue jeans and white runners at the time. Detective Constable Cara Brockwell said the incident appeared to be a single occurrence. “This seems to be a single attack or incident there hasn’t been any other ones in that vicinity or that appear to have the same offender,” she said. “We’re hopeful that someone will be able to come forth and identify him to help with our inquires.” Investigators have released an image of a man that may assist with their inquiries. A DIFFERENT kind of Santa Claus is coming to town. Highpoint Shopping Centre is offering kids with autism the chance to meet Santa in a calm and controlled environment. Under the Sensitive Santa program, Santa and his helpers are up bright and early each morning before the centre opens to the public to give 20-minute special visits to kids with autism. Prior to each appointment, parents fill out a questionnaire about their family so that Santa and his helpers are fully briefed on each child - including triggers, interests and what’s on their Christmas wish list. The program, which was piloted last year, was driven by Highpoint general manager Scott Crellin, who himself has a child with autism. Sensitive Santa is run in consultation with Victoria’s peak body for autism, AMAZE. Mr Crellin said many kids with autism were especially sensitive to loud noises, music, crowds and unpredictable situations, meaning they usually can’t wait patiently in a long line to see Santa. “I know how hard it is to create moments like this,” he said. “I am incredibly proud that our centre has pioneered the Sensitive Santa program in Australia and that we are continuing to build on its success in 2013.” This year, Highpoint will host 45 Sensitive Santa sessions until 21 December. Caroline Springs mother Jodie Reeves was thrilled to get a picture perfect moment of her sons Oliver and Charlie when the family went to see Sensitive Santa recently. Five-year-old Oliver was diagnosed with high-functioning autism in May. “This is actually the first time we got to see Santa, because he’s always been intimidated and a bit scared by him,” Mrs Reeves said.

WHEN Pierre Vairo was a child, Footscray was his own little CBD - the place where he took his piano and swimming lessons, and where his parents bought food from the Footscray Market. So when he was old enough to leave the Kensington home he was brought up in, Mr Vairo didn’t have to think twice: he moved to Footscray. Today, Mr Vairo is celebrating after being chosen as the third photographer for Maribyrnong City Council’s F5: Footscray in Transition project. The project aims to creatively capture the evolving physical and cultural changes within
Footscray over a five-year period. “It’s quite humbling,” Mr Vairo said. “(Footscray is) not pretentious in any way, shape or form. “You can walk down the street and no-one’s going to look at you or judge you - I don’t feel a pressure to conform to anything in Footscray. “It’s so diverse in culture and social-economic background and I really like that. It’s a pocket of Melbourne close to the city and there’s always something interesting going on. “I started photographing it myself when I saw that the Regional Rail Link was coming through and a lot of things were getting knocked down ...
so when the F5 thing came up, I thought, I’ve kind of already been doing that. “It’s great to do it in a formal setting and know that my photos are going to be preserved by the council and people will be looking back at them.” F5: Footscray in Transition focuses on 10 sites within the city, including Irving St, McNabb Ave, Binks Ford, Hopkins St, Footscray Station, Nicholson St Bridge, Olympic Donut Van, Little Saigon, Nicholson St Mall, Footscray Hotel and a skyline of Mr Vairo’s choosing. Mr Vairo’s images will be projected onto the eastern face of the Footscray Town Hall from dusk until midnight every night until 25 December.

By CHARLENE MACAULAY WHEN Suzanne Gaskell first retired, she set about finding a hobby. She tried out painting and jewellery making with little success, then she put pen to paper - and the rest, as they say, is history. “I had all this artistic need, but no talent (in other creative tasks),” Ms Gaskell said. “When I started writing, I thought, this is something I could do. Once I started, I couldn’t stop.” Two years later, and Ms Gaskell has won the short story under 3000 words category at the Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Award for her piece A Break in Trust. Ms Gaskell, who has previously been shortlisted for the Stiletto Award, was thrilled to take out the title. “I have sworn I will never write again when I’ve had a work not been recognised in any way,” she said. “It tears you down ... but when you are recognised, it’s like winning $50 million - it’s better than that. (Writing is) this dreadful up, down, up down. “Writing is very subjective and my writing isn’t for everybody,” she said. “I’m a bit of an odd writer. I write in quite short sentences, and I like things that are differ-

Great cake A picture of the most glorious looking cake caught my eye in That’s Life magazine the other day and, on reading the recipe, I couldn’t believe how simple it was to make. So I whipped one up while staying at my mum’s place and it was so moist and crumbly and divine, we couldn’t stop eating it. It’s a great standby for afternoon tea when friends pop by in the lead up to Christmas, or serve it warm on Christmas Day with caramel sauce and a scoop of ice cream, as a delicious (but less time consuming) twist on the traditional plum pudding. It’s suitable to freeze, and as it’s an oil-based cake, there’s no mucking around with electric beaters or creaming butter and sugar.

EASY APPLE CAKE 2 cups plain flour 2 teaspoons each baking powder and ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon bicarb 1 cup raw caster sugar (I used regular white caster sugar) 400g can slice apple pie fruit 2 eggs ¾ cup rice bran oil (I used canola oil) 1/3 cup each sultanas and chopped pecans (these are optional) Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius (160 degrees fan forced). Line a 22 cm round cake pan with baking paper. Sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon and bicarb into a bowl. Add sugar, apples, eggs and oil. Stir mixture until well combined. Fold through sultanas and pecans. Spoon mixture into pan. Bake for one hour and ten minutes or until cooked when tested with a skewer. Cool in pan for ten minutes before turning onto a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar, or serve warm with caramel sauce and ice cream. CARAMEL SAUCE: Place one cup each thickened cream and brown sugar and 60g butter into a saucepan. Stir over medium heat until butter has melted. Cook a further four to five minutes or until thickened slightly. This is the last Food Byte column for the year. BUILDERS’ headaches could be relieved under new building standards announced last week. Builders will no longer need to apply for planning permits to build lower height boundary walls on new homes, thanks to a new Victorian Coalition Government initiative. The move aims to cut some of the red tape to save builders and families time and money, boost house affordability and create reforms that align regulatory standards with today’s building practises. Minister for Planning Matthew Guy announced in a statement that under the new reformed building standards, boundary walls of new homes or extensions will have further setbacks and greater heights allowed without the need for a permit. “The Coalition Government continues to redefine planning and building controls for Victoria by delivering common sense reforms that drive better outcomes. “These reforms will save time and money for builders, councils and Victorian families as they build their new homes,” Mr Guy said. Mr Guy said the new rules will be included into Victoria Planning Provisions and align the law with current building practices while cutting back unnecessary red tape. “This is about bringing our planning processes in line with modern building practices and expectations among home buyers saving everyone time and money,” Mr Guy said. The average height of a boundary wall allowed without a planning permit will be increased from 3.0 to 3.2 metres under the reform.
The maximum height of boundary walls is unchanged at 3.6 metres. Neighbours will be notified of any application to exceed boundary wall average or maximum heights, as per existing requirements.
The increase to boundary wall setbacks will allow for adequate fascia and guttering, and the boundary wall height change will enable builders to use ‘waffle pods’ for laying a concrete slab on the
ground promoting efficiency and reducing waste, meet homeowner desires for higher 2.7 metre ceilings rather than 2.4 metres, and allow the construction of garages under the same roof line as the house.

MARRIOTT WATERS VILLAWOOD PROPERTIES AND MARRIOTT FAMILY CREATING a genuine sense of community and place is the idea behind the Marriott Waters development in Lyndhurst. The joint venture between the Marriott Family and Villawood Properties is the winner in the UDIA Masterplanned Development category. The partnership has taken what was a flood prone problem site and a run of the mill development plan and transformed it into an innovative masterplanned design with interconnecting wetlands. Marriott Waters is now a highly
sought-after community, with many different housing choices for residents. The sustainable development includes 27 hectares of wetlands and parklands, recycled water as well as access to transport, education, fibre optic network, sporting facilities, retail outlets and a residents’ club. The site is located in a regional ‘low spot’ with a significant external catchment from the north, east and south. MITCHELL’S RUN DACLAND PTY LTD MITCHELL’S Run is a development which successfully integrates with the natural landscape surrounding it. The site in Doreen is the worthy winner of the Residential Development- more than 250 lots category. The motto of ‘A Real Sense of Place’ perfectly describes the new community, which is characterised by picturesque views and informal parkland. From the entrance to the development, among parkland and river red gums, it is clear the focus of Mitchell’s Run is to establish an informal residential development with a focus on nature. The feedback from the consultation process helped inform the overall design of the subdivision, gained community buy-in to the layout of Central Park and shaped the successful relocation of the heritage oak trees, from which the site gets its name, along the Avenue of Honour. In recent years, Narre Warren has experienced strong population growth across all markets and Oaktree Rise has been well received, with a waiting list for future releases.

FIFTY ALBERT HAMTON FIFTY Albert’s unique design echoes the eclectic nature of the South Melbourne skyline. The High Density Development category joint winner is a 30-storey, mixed-use development which offers its residents a luxurious lifestyle in one of Melbourne’s most prestigious South Melbourne locations. Fifty Albert is a mixed-use development comprising 282 residential apartments, which range in size from 50.5sqm to 164.5sqm. This includes 84 one-bedroom apartments, 190 two-bedroom apartments and eight three-bedroom apartments - with two of the latter being double-storey.
VIEW APARTMENTS PTY LTD Fifty Albert’s apartments all feature luxury fittings including stainless steel appliances and designer European appliances in the bathrooms. Throughout the construction of the apartments, developers gave huge consideration to the value of views from the towers. The layout and form strongly
engage views such as Harbour Park, Edgewater Lake and Jack’s Wood. It is conveniently located only a short walk to many Maribyrnong amenities. The site enjoys excellent pedestrian and cycling accessibility, with easy access between ’the apartments’ and key points of interest along Edgewater Boulevard. Located on a 5200 square metre site, Yarra Point houses a diverse mix of bedroom dwellings and has sealed its place as one of Melbourne’s most elite waterfront communities. Following an eight-year break, Mirvac re-entered Melbourne’s apartment market with a bang when it developed Yarra Point apartments. The towers are now home to almost

AVENUE Projects has touted 38 Camberwell Road as its benchmark marketing tool since its completion in May 2013, and not without reason. The building debuted on the market in 2011 and was sold to a mix of owner-occupiers and investors, with over 70 per cent of the apartments sold prior to construction in early 2012. The Hawthorn East development is situated on a prominent corner between Camberwell Junction and the vibrant shopping centres of Glenferrie and Auburn Road and offers 53 apartments over five levels. Each apartment enjoys high quality finishes, expansive indoor and outdoor living spaces
and an envied location. The design also includes basement car parking for all units to minimise the impact of parking on the site plan, with access via Auburn Grove rather than the busy Camberwell Road thoroughfare. Avenue Projects has also integrated disabled access into the building’s design while also using architectural variation to break down the length of the building in both streetscapes. In addition, the development has enhanced the public realm through maintaining the alignment of the Auburn Grove footpath and retaining the existing trees adjacent to the site.

A 59-UNIT apartment and townhouse project at 205 Gipps Street Abbotsford that blends social and private housing has been hailed a resounding success by tenants and owners. Using a co-operative housing model, not-for-profit developer Common Equity Housing Limited invests profits from the sale of the project’s 34 private apartments to ensure its 25 social housing apartments are affordable to low-income tenants. The result is five storeys of high-quality apartments in three neighbouring buildings - the penthouse storeys tastefully set back behind a reinforced heritage facade of the former boot factory/warehouse. Deciduous trees in the complex’s landscaped internal courtyard shade the

apartments in summer and allow more natural light in winter. At least half of the social housing dwellings are made available to people on the public housing waiting list. Six disability apartments were bought by the Transport Accident Commission and Summer Foundation. The rent is linked to income; residents pays no more than 25 per cent of their pension/ income on rent, or more than 75 per cent of the market rate for one and two bedroom apartments in the area. The private apartments were sold despite a saturated market of more than 1,500 available apartments in Abbotsford and resistance from buyers investing in a social housing setting.

ISLINGTON SILOS BLUE EARTH GROUP BANBURY VILLAGE CEDAR WOODS PROPERTIES LTD ISLINGTON Silos, a residential conversion of the former James Hood Malthouse and associated silos, in Collingwood’s iconic Islington Street has won the Urban Renewal award for 2013. The complex is protected by a Heritage Overlay in the Yarra Planning Scheme, and the statement of significance for the buildings attributes their historical value to their function and age, rather than aesthetic or architectural value. The Silos offer 21 three-bedroom apartments over 11 storeys. At ground level is a gymnasium and an apartment with a large terrace. Each of the 10 levels above provides two apartments separated by the central lift core.
Two impressive glass penthouses are perched at the ‘crown’ of the silos, creating the illusion of floating forms. The soft curves of the building feature large glass walls, capturing stunning views and lending an ethereal juxtaposition. The spacious floor plans allow for generous airflow and an enviable 360 degrees vantage, ensuring apartments are filled with constant stream of natural light. Although not within an activity centre this site is very close to significant concentrations of commercial, recreation and entertainment facilities along Victoria Parade, Hoddle Street, Brunswick Street and other strip centres. It is also very convenient to a variety of transport routes, schools and community facilities.
DEVELOPER Cedar Woods had a responsibility to ensure the values and features of one of the western suburb’s best urban renewal sites were integrated into the final design and benefited the local community. Banbury Village, Footscray, integrates seamlessly with the surrounding area, while also delivering a variety of housing to meet market expectations. To achieve this, Cedar Woods had to deal with, and manage a host of issues including: a harsh interface on three sides; the condition of the heritage buildings and the extent of the hazardous materials to be dealt with; and a range of
buyer profiles and the specific needs of an eclectic community. The feedback Cedar Woods has had from its customers has been overwhelmingly positive, leading to many referral and repeat sales. The developer believes this is of enormous benefit in the long-run with referral sales, positive local council and government relationships, a high level of staff satisfaction through taking pride in their work and – of course – an enhanced corporate reputation. All of this has helped establish Banbury Village as the premier residential address in Melbourne’s innerwest.

DANDENONG LOGIS ECOINDUSTRIAL BUSINESS PARK PLACES VICTORIA AND MELBOURNE WATER DANDENONG LOGIS has transformed a contaminated, disused site into an environmental showpiece. The 154-hectare industrial business park has received this year’s Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Environmental Excellence award. The Dandenong Treatment Plant in Dandenong South closed in 1996, leaving behind highlycontaminated soil. In November 2005, the State Government announced a $150 million, fouryear land reclamation project to transform the 180 hectares into a bustling commercial and residential hub. The first land at LOGIS South, to the south of Greens Road, was released in 2009 and
LOGIS North land, between Dandenong Bypass and Greens Road, was first released in 2011. There’s a regional wetland for stormwater treatment, rainwater tanks, native plants and mature trees to promote birdlife and wildlife access to Dandenong Creek, Class A recycled water to every lot, solar hot water and natural ventilation, and mulch made from recycled shipping pallets. There are more than 20 hectares of open space for recreation and LOGIS is the first industrial development in Victoria to introduce T5 energy efficient street lighting. Posts feature twin lamps that activate when the roads are busy and reduce to one active lamp when road usage decreases.
AN EXCELLENT model for future mixed-use development, the concepts used in this particular site have not been seen in the Awards for Excellence submissions before. The emerging trend of apartments above the retail environment has been done well with a clear delineation between residential and retail. Circulation and access have been well handled

with the apartments having separate entry foyers and the loading facilities are entirely within the ground level built form. Rubbish zones were relocated to a concealed section and creating a landscape buffer to adjoining residences. Of particular note were the storage cages which, unusually, were located on the same floor as the apartments, with obvious benefits for residents.

MARRIOTT WATERS VILLAWOOD PROPERTIES VILLAWOOD has worked hard to redesign a very basic stormwater system with a ‘bottom of the drain’ retarding basin, into a well integrated wetland and floodway system. They have taken drainage from two catchments beyond the site and created a major feature of the estate which now forms part of a larger walking path system. Delivery of Class A recycled water was brought forward

through the developer’s negotiations with the local water authority. A temporary above ground tank was installed as a holding tank for residents during peak times until the supply of recycled water became a permanent facility. Over 20% of the site has been devoted to the waterways and parks, the wetlands significantly reducing the risk of flooding in the low-lying area.
NAPOLI Park is not only beautiful; it is a multifunctional space of 1.8 hectares which has been provided early in the development of the Providence Estate. It is infused with many contemporary Australian elements. It is broken up into active and passive areas with a mix of walking paths through gardens, seating, protected spaces and opportunities for community and

While containing all the appearances of a rich, exotic and layered environment, Napoli Park is actually designed to minimise maintenance, for example galvanised steel roofing treated in ‘Liquid Rust’ paint creates a themed effect while being a simple installation. It features art by mosaic artist Davia McMillan, which sit comfortably in the environment.

Party time for the office OFFICE Christmas parties can be awkward and boring when everyone gravitates toward the people they already know. However, the festive function is an opportunity for management to create unity among colleagues and ultimately improving interoffice relations. Playing games at the office Christmas party may seem cheesy and juvenile but it helps co-workers become more comfortable with one another and creates a fun atmosphere. Grab a handful of sticky notes and scribble down a famous celebrity or well-known character onto each one. Everyone gets a note stuck onto their back, and they must ask their colleagues questions about who their person is. A few days before the party, send a memo to the office workers attending the party asking them to email a few bits of trivia about themselves. Trivia should relate to Christmas in this case. Create a sheet whereby workmates need to match trivia to the name of their colleagues.

TAYLORS Hill boxing sensation Jake Ellis has never had to work as hard as he has been over the past six weeks. Ellis has been keeping himself busy in preparation for ‘Once Upon a Time in Sunshine II’ - an event he’s not only organising as promoter, but also fighting in himself. Six days a week Ellis will get some training done in the morning before suiting up to run some errands for the promotion. After a long day of gym visits, poster runs, paying bills and ticket drop offs, Ellis then puts his gloves back on once more and resumes preparations for his third professional bout. “It’s just hard in the sense that if I was to promote, that’s all I’d do and if I was to only fight on the night then that’s all I’d do, and obviously I have my school and all that which is another added pressure,” Ellis explained. “But when you’re doing both it’s very hard. “You’re pretty much, from nine to five, dressed in nice attire going around doing promoting errands, and then once five o’clock hits you have to glove up and become a boxer. “It is very mentally draining and stressful, especially thinking that I’m trying to prepare for a fight when all this other stuff is coming through. But I’m sure it’ll all pay off.” So far undefeated in the ring, Ellis has developed a keen ambition to master the promoting game as well. Ellis’ previous event, his first ‘Once Upon a Time in Sunshine’ promotion, drew nearly 500 people back in August. While that night proved a raging success, Ellis hopes this time around it will be even bigger. “I was shy by about 30 or 40 people from the joint being full,” he said. “I pulled about 500 people, so there was a lot of real positive feedback from everyone. “It was by far my best promotion I’ve ever done, and that’s why I’ve actually felt confident enough to both promote and fight on the same night.”

Crusaders dominate grid By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Western Crusaders Gridiron Club has never quite had a day like it. Last weekend the Footscray-based club provided for a clean sweep of Vic Bowl titles - claiming both the Junior and Women’s Vic Bowl championships in dominant fashion. “It was a massive day for the club,” Crusaders president Scott Hayden said. “To win two grand finals in one day - it was an amazing day for the club, and both teams did their club proud.” First up the Western Foxes women’s team, coached by Hayden, cruised to a comfortable 32-8 win over the Northern Lady Raiders.
Then later in the day in front of a very healthy and vocal crowd at Croydon’s Ranger Field, the Crusaders’ junior team completed the club double with a comprehensive 38-0 shutout of the Monash Warriors. “The juniors have been dominant all year,” Hayden said. “They had one blip on their radar when they dropped their last game of the season. “But then they rebounded strongly in the semi-final and won 60-0 and then came back in the grand final and just killed it.” In one day of football the club almost doubled its trophy count - adding to the Crusaders’ three senior men’s titles. Hayden told Star these latest triumphs provided for one of
the most significant days in the club’s history. “It’s right up there,” he said. “When you talk the biggest days for the club, you’re talking like 1999, when we won our first senior men’s grand final, 2000 when we went back-toback and then in 2007 where we went undefeated. “But this day is right up there with those three, I reckon.” The Crusaders’ senior men’s team finished fifth earlier in the year with a 7-5 record under coach Kriss Guidotti, and will be looking to improve on that record when the 2014 season kicks off next year. Pre-season training will commence in late January at the club’s Henry Turner Reserve base.

SUNSHINE head coach Brett Jacobs has been appointed coach of the WRFL’s senior representative squad for the 2014 Victoria Metro Championships. Named as the 2013 WRFL Division One Team of the Year coach earlier this season, Jacobs will lead the WRFL in the first metropolitan senior interleague carnival since 1999. Ranked fifth in Melbourne’s six senior metropolitan leagues by AFL Victoria, the WRFL will take on the sixth seeded Southern Football League (SFL) in the carnival’s main event on Saturday 29 March at Visy Park. Jacobs is confident the league is well placed to move up the scales in years to come. “There’s not really a lot separating the top from the bottom, so I’m comfortable with us sitting in fifth place as it’s a great spring board for us to show the other league’s what we have to offer and hopefully we can move up the rankings in the next few years,” he said. The Bush Bash sees teams travel to a country location throughout the state and play in two Twenty20 fixtures on the day. Despite currently sitting 10th on the table and just two spots from the bottom, Bronca remains hopeful his side will be able to turn the tide in the second half of the season, beginning with this weekend’s two-day away clash against Brighton District. “We aren’t used to being that far down the ladder at this stage of the year but look, we have not really done much wrong in regards to why we are in that position,” he said. “But we’ll come out and hopefully have a good win against Brighton District and that’ll put us right back in the pack again to then pounce after Christmas.”

POINT Cook’s 135 was not good enough to get past the Williams Landing Marshalls in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Grade Matting competition on Saturday. The Marshalls chose to send Point Cook in to bat - which in 50.4 overs was bowled out for that 135-run first innings total. In a close affair Williams Landing bravely chased down the runs, getting to 9/146 by the end of the 60th over. The Marshalls remain third on the table while Point Cook sits in sixth position. In other A Grade Matting results over the weekend, Caroline Springs got the better of Seabrook at Comben Reserve, completing an outright win by restricting Seabrook to 90 in the second innings. In 14 overs Caroline Springs got the job done, reaching 3/68 to claim the points. Other winners on the weekend included Williamstown Imperials and Melton Centrals, which beat Melton South Primary School and Wyndham Vale respectively. star By LIAM TWOMEY SPORTING fans around the world are starting to catch on to the talents of Western Suburbs’ local Dante Exum. The Seabrook resident and Keilor Basketball Association junior is touted as a top five draft pick if he decides to nominate for next year’s NBA draft. If not, he will have a host of college recruiters desperate to secure his services. However, Exum’s astonishing exploits on the court are coming as no surprise to members of the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club. The 18-year-old is one of hundreds of young athletes from the Western Suburbs who have been nominated for the club’s prestigious Don Deeble Rising Star Award which is sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives
$1000 towards achieving their sporting goals while at the award’s grand final, the overall winner is given $5000. On top of that, two runners-up also receive $2500. Sixteen athletes were nominated from June 2012 to November 2013 and are all in contention for the upcoming grand final which will be held in January. Sunshine Western Region Sports Club vice-president Barry Watson is rapt with the standard of nominees the award attracts. “We all are thrilled that he (Exum) is continuing to climb the ladder in basketball,” Watson said. “What an extraordinary effort if he gets into the top five draft picks. Cecil (Dante’s father) and the family will be so thrilled.” Exum isn’t the only former Don Deeble Rising Star Award winner to be turning heads around the world. Point Cook’s Rachel Jarry secured a WNBA Title with the Minnesota Lynx this year while Werribee’s Jess Cameron is one of Australia’s leading female cricketers. “Rachel and Jess have been outstanding and have great careers ahead,” Watson said. “We all hope and wish them well. The Western Suburbs are producing

For the love of the game IS loyalty dying at local football level? I ask this because of a few events I have heard about in recent weeks. One involves a playing group getting the coach the sack because they did not like his style. Another involves a player who agreed to play for one club, who got him employment, then reneged when offered more money by a rival club. I believe he kept the job. Player power to this degree is not healthy for the game, when they can dictate terms, walk out on contracts and control the big picture at a club, it is akin to the lunatics running the asylum. Clubs that allow this to happen are going to pay the price in the future. Under the newly-revised model, the implementation of a potential
two-division structure will depend on the number of successful applicants. As proposed by the clubs at the November meeting, allocation of the successful applicants will be subject to their placing at the end of the 2013 Victorian Premier League and State League competitions. There will also be no promotion or relegation between the NPL and State League clubs for three sea-
sons. However, NPL clubs will be subject to promotion and relegation within a two-tier structure - if implemented. Other NPL requirements include the appointment of a technical director for each club and the implementation of seven under-age teams from under-12s through to under20s. By 2015, all NPL clubs must also field an under-17s boy’s team.

THE Bulldogs made the news last week after making a few changes to the structure of its cheer squad. While I understand the emotive reaction from the long-standing members of the cheer squad the club has every right to take control of how the cheer squad is run. The cheer squad belongs to the club not any individuals. Gary, Lorraine and David have done a great job over a long period of time but it is not their cheer squad. They have not been sacked from the club. I no longer host the president’s lunch nor the best-and-fairest, which I did for over a decade. Look at the history of current president of the club Peter Gordon, he is a great example of putting his love for the club above anything else. It might be a cliche, but the club is bigger than any individual. I HAVE to say I was surprised to hear Ryan Griffen named as Bulldogs captain last week. I did a function with him on Monday night and he gave no indication what was about to be announced the next day. ‘Griffo’ is an interesting choice because to be honest, I don’t see him as a natural leader, but obviously Brendan McCartney sees something else. There is no doubt he leads by example on the field as he is one of the elite players of the game. In retrospect I didn’t think Matty Boyd was a natural leader either and I was wrong there, hope I am again. One thing Ryan does have is a very balanced outlook on life and a realistic view where football sits in the order of importance. He loves nothing more than getting away from the city and going fishing. GREAT to see two terrific football people appointed to representative coaching roles last week. Former Bulldogs champion Brian Royal will coach the AFL Vic Metro team to play the Peter Knights-coached Vic Country next year. The Metro side will be chosen after the Vic Metro league play off at Visy Park on 29 March. The WRFL team in that series will be coached by Brett Jacobs from the Sunshine Kangaroos who was named WRFL Coach of the Year. THE long and bitter National Premier League saga that has plagued Victorian football has finally been resolved, with Football Federation Australia confirming it will go ahead next season. The FFA stepped in to resolve the long-running dispute between Football Federation Victoria and a group of co-signatory clubs - confirming on Friday the go-ahead for the NPL nearly four weeks after clubs were told to prepare for the Victorian rollout at a meeting in mid-November. The agreement has also put an end to Supreme Court proceedings between the FFV and the co-signatory clubs. “The NPL is an integral part of our national elite player pathway and a hugely important reform of the semi-professional tier of Australian football,” FFA CEO David Gallop said in Friday’s statement. “FFV and its clubs have worked through many issues and agreed on an NPL model that’s now a benchmark nationally in many areas.” South Melbourne’s Nick Galatas welcomed the news on behalf of the clubs. “The clubs have always wanted Victoria to be part of the NPL in 2014 and now we’ll apply for licences, work as quickly as we can to meet the criteria and get on with implementation,” Galatas said.
