Party’s over for drivers sor, Senior Sergeant Fiona Waters said the campaign was a reminder that the roads are not the place to party and will work in support of police operations cracking down on drug and alcoholaffected drivers this Christmas. “The campaign will focus on alcohol screening and increased enforcement pertaining to distraction offences.” These include the use of mobile phones, distraction by passengers or entertainment systems, GPS or social media devices.
“Irresponsible road users won’t be tolerated. “If you drink or take drugs and drive, if you speed, drive unlicensed or an unregistered car the party’s over.” Hobsons Bay police Inspector Richard Paterson said officers are actively targeting these offences. “Recent collisions in Hobsons Bay have been attributed to these factors and I’ll be using our police resources to make our roads safer for all users,” Insp Paterson said.
“I want people to enjoy the festive season, but to do so in a safe environment.” TAC CEO Janet Dore said December was traditionally one of the deadliest months on the state’s roads, making the campaign a timely reminder to be safe. “Two hundred and ten people have died already this year and thousands more have been injured. “We want to see Victorians keep safe on the roads for the rest of 2013,” Ms Dore said.

THE party is over for drivers who do the wrong thing on the roads over the holiday season. Police in Hobsons Bay along with the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) have joined a state-wide initiative to crackdown on risky driving as the community counts down to the festive season. The launch of The Party’s Over campaign coincides with last week’s release of the TAC’s latest fatality and
serious injury data showing year-onyear trends. According to the data there have been three fatalities in the municipality in 2013 compared to one last year. There were 11 claims involving acute hospitalisation over 14 days during 12 months to April 2013 compared to 10 in 2012. PHILIPPINES born Sabina Riego is proud of her heritage so when disaster struck in her birthplace she jumped into action. The 42-year-old Altona Meadows resident was devastated by the news about Typhoon Haiyan and was keen to take the opportunity to be part of the organising committee for the charity event Entertainment Extravaganza. The typhoon ripped through the south-east Asian nation’s central islands.
Ms Riego did not embrace her culture until seven years ago after her father needed help when he established the Melbourne Integrated Sport Club. But it was her first trip back to the Philippines six years ago that she understood the old adage of Australia being “the lucky country”. “That’s when it hit me how poor they really are.” Ms Riego, who was born in the Philippines, was not directly affected by the disaster but said it was a natural instinct to want to help and an example set by
her parents. “It’s a very Filipino trait. We are very loving, very generous people even if we have nothing on the table we’ll still invite you over for dinner and serve you something.” She said her parent’s home was always open to strangers and housed many people who arrived in Australia from the Philippines for a better life and trying to get on their feet. “It’s just what we do, we band together to help out our people.”

THE Regional Rail Link (RRL) project will be going full steam ahead over the summer holidays to take advantage of lower commuter numbers. The $4.8 billion project will reach a major milestone on 22 December with the opening of two new platforms at Southern Cross station and the project’s first section of dedicated V/Line tracks, which means trains on the Geelong line will have a clear run to Southern Cross and won’t have to wait behind metropolitan trains. Following this, a construction blitz from 28 December to 19 January will see the next stages of the project begin to take shape, including: The revamping of Footscray and Sunshine train stations, including new platforms on the Irving St side of Footscray train station; The removal of the Anderson Rd level crossing; and The demolition of the old Nicholson St bridge and the installation of the new bridge. “With Regional Rail Link on budget and ahead of schedule, passengers are going to progressively start seeing benefits well before the project’s completion,” Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said. “Over late December and early January, public transport patronage reduces by up to a half, and doesn’t return to normal levels until the end of February. “Completing works over this quieter period will help to minimise the effect on rail passengers while making significant progress in a short time.” A combination of shuttle train services and replacement buses will operate along the Sunbury line while the works are carried out. Metro will also run an amended timetable across most metropolitan lines from 22 December to 26 January to accommodate the construction works. The RRL will create capacity for an extra 23 suburban and 10 regional services during each morning and evening at peak times, allowing an extra 54,000 passenger trips each day. No snap decisions By NICOLE VALICEK PEOPLE in Hobsons Bay are being asked to think before they jump or dive from piers and jetties this summer with the risk of life-changing consequences. Nazim Erdem was 20-years-old when he dived off an Elwood pier into shallow water in an effort to impress some nearby girls. The dive resulted in a permanent spinal cord injury and left Nazim a quadriplegic for life. “It was just a bit of fun with my mates but it’s changed my life forever. You’re aware that there are risks in life
but I never thought jumping off a pier would result in an injury like this,� Nazim said. After he jumped off the pier and hit the bottom, he realised that he could not move his whole body which meant he could not resurface. Luckily he had been taught to hold his breath under water for up to three minutes. “My mates thought I was mucking around so I was under water for nearly two and a half minutes before they realised something was wrong.� Prior to his accident Nazim played Australian Rules Football and was an amateur boxer.
Following his accident, Nazim took up wheelchair rugby and competed successfully as a member of the Australian team including winning a gold medal at the 2012 London Paralympics. Each year there are 350-400 new cases of spinal cord injuries reported and nine per cent of these are caused by water-related accidents. Males aged 15-35 years are at the highest risk of acquiring a spinal cord injury, yet the most common causes of these - water/diving related activities and road accidents - are preventable. Parks Victoria in conjunction with

Celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss By NICOLE VALICEK A COUPLE who met by chance at a hamburger shop will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this week. The Bedellas, of Brooklyn, will celebrate six decades of marriage on Thursday. Donald and Lorraine were married at St Andrews Church in Footscray on 12 December, 1953. The family will toast their diamond anniversary at a special function organised by their four daughters Donna, Linda, Vicki and Julie. The Bedellas met at a local hamburger hang out in Footscray. Donald, who rode a motorbike, was there with his mates and Lorraine was waiting at a nearby tram stop with her sister after tennis. “It started by talking to the motorbike boys on the way home,� she said. The couple, who moved to Brooklyn in 1954, said they have enjoyed their life and cherish their four children and eight grandchildren. Lorraine thinks back and laughs at times during their courtship when they would attend local dances together. “He went with me to the dance one night I told him to sit at the other end of the wall or no one will dance with me so he went home.� The pair has had many adventures including one memorable motorbike ride along the Great Ocean Rd. “In those days girls rode on the back of motorbikes, we went down on the Great Ocean Rd on a new motorbike and we went over the edge,� Donald said. “Luckily it was a gradual decline, we didn’t go straight down. They pulled the bike back up with other bikes and we rode back home.� When asked to share the secret to six decades of marriage the couple agreed they did not know the recipe, but that they did everything together. “I really don’t know,� Lorraine said. “He’s got patience, I haven’t,� she added. The couple are well known in the community especially for Lorraine’s work with the Lorraine Bedella Seniors Centre in Altona North, after whom it was renamed in 2004.
Tender for loving care By NICOLE VALICEK COMMUNITY managed and not-for-profit childcare providers will be invited to express interest in the management of two long day care centres in the municipality. Altona North Children’s Centre and Altona Meadows Children’s Centre could be under new management following a decision by Hobsons Bay City Council last week. Hobsons Bay Mayor Sandra Wilson said the new management arrangements for the centres would see quality childcare continue at the locations and still maintain the number of long day care places. “By introducing new providers, quality of care can be delivered to the same number of children at a lower cost to the council, freeing up funds in the budget for other services and projects,� she said. The two centres are currently run by the council. “We know how important quality childcare is to families in Hobsons Bay. “The council is committed to supporting quality early years service in Hobsons Bay.� The council will continue to house its 20 kindergarten and early year’s programs owned and maintained buildings. “We have also made a significant investment in the development of the new Newport Gardens Early Years Centre, opening in January,� councillor Wilson said. The changes to the management of the centres are due to be made in 2015.

Centre of community THE construction of the Newport Gardens Early Years Centre is now complete. Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Sandra Wilson, handed the keys to the Newport Gardens Early Years Centre to service provider Early Childhood Management Services recently.
The $5.4 million Newport Gardens Early Years Centre will provide long day care, kindergarten, maternal and child health services, Yooralla’s Early Intervention Service, Hobsons Bay Toy Library and playgroups. Community rooms will also be available for hire.
Furniture will now be installed ahead of the centre opening in January 2014. A special Capturing the History Project wall mural, featuring memories and photographs from past and present students of the Hobsons Bay Kindergarten will also be installed at the centre.
New Oz home for Sunny By NICOLE VALICEK ALTONA resident Joanna Sherwell saved the life of her Thailand born dog Sunny and now she is fighting to bring him home. The self-confessed animal lover recently launched a fundraising campaign to bring him back to Australia. After a year of depression and grief over the loss of her two dogs and a close friend, Joanna was offered a live-in role as the Elephant Nature Park dogs manager in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The park houses 380 rescued dogs on the property and in June Joanna was asked to manage its rescue dog program. The animal conservationist is ready to come home and continue her work in animal conservation and youth development but “fell in love” with Sunny and is determined to bring him home. “There has only been one known successful dog adoption from Thailand to Australia due to the costs and level of quarantine required. “My adoption of Sunny will be the second,” she said. Sunny was a stray dog who wandered into the elephant park. He was de-sexed and vaccinated and let free to either stay at the park or wander out of the gate. “I fell in love with Sunny I realised I had found my dog, that to leave him behind and return to Australia myself would break my heart and his as well.” Joanna has contributed all of her savings and has taken out a loan to help get her four legged companion home to Australia with her. Her online fund-raising project Pozible has raised $3200 but Joanna and Sunny need more to make the adoption a reality.

Respect and thanks By NICOLE VALICEK THE hard work of volunteers in the community was praised last week during a day held to celebrate them. Hobsons Bay City Council said thanks to the wonderful contribution of all volunteers on International Volunteer Day held last Thursday. Hobsons Bay City Mayor Sandra Wilson said that recognition of the importance of volunteering would be a focus of her mayoral program. “The time volunteers put in is truly remarkable and they deserve the council’s utmost respect and thanks,” Cr Wilson said. “It is hard to imagine what
our community would be like without the hard work and dedication of so many selfless individuals and groups.” There are between 700 and 800 local community organisations in the municipality with the majority being run by dedicated teams of volunteers. She said volunteers are involved in a wide variety of activities in the community including sports, health, education, community services, environmental projects and many more. “Volunteers also directly support the council in delivering meals on wheels, providing visitor information services, planting trees and providing
transport and support for frail and elderly residents.” She said many residents also serve as volunteer committee members with organisations providing services from facilities like kindergartens and early learning centres, community centres, senior citizens centres and sporting clubs. Cr Wilson said volunteering is a great way to get involved in the community, make new friends or learn new skills. “We can all recognise the efforts of volunteers in our community. “Saying a simple ‘thank you’ to someone who volunteers can show that their work is appreciated.”

A LOCAL fundraising event has raised $7000 for women with breast or gynaecological cancer. Western Suburbs women were invited to attend a Girls’ Night In event held at Pia Fonsboel’s Danish furniture warehouse in Williamstown, Retropia, with local Sophie Murphy recently. More than 500 people attended the event along with 25 stall holders selling things like jewellery, plants, scarves, handbags, children’s clothes and crafts. Ms Fonsboel said the night was an overwhelming success. “The outpouring of time, energy, donations and attendance was tremendous.”

PET shelters receive the highest number of unidentified animals during the summer’s months leaving large numbers of owners uncontactable and dogs and cats displaced from homes. Altona resident and veterinarian Caroline Butler from The Lost Dogs’ Home said this December all pet owners are encouraged to get on top of their pet’s identification. Ms Butler said each year, thousands of lost animals are brought to shelters across Australia without identification, or carrying identification with outdated contact details. “Dogs are more prone to es-
caping as summer storms and fireworks - especially backyard fireworks - send many dogs scampering for the streets in a panic. “It’s also cat breeding season, a time when we are always inundated with cats - many unidentified and in need of a home.” She said this makes it difficult and sometimes impossible for shelter staff to contact their owners and for owners to find their pets. “I see the result of inadequately identified animals every day.” “(It) is stressful and heartbreaking for everyone concerned - for the owners, animals and our shelter staff.”
She said a large percentage of dogs arriving at the shelter are now micro chipped, but pet owners not maintaining current details on identification is a problem. “Pet owners need to ask themselves whether their pet is identified with a chip or collar ID tag and if so, are the contact details up-to-date.” “By doing this, pet owners are helping prevent the heartache of a lost pet.” Visit ChipChecker stations on Saturday 15 December at Cyril Curtain Reserve, Williamstown, from 9am to 11am and Apex Park, Altona, from 1pm to 3pm.

Ms Fonsboel said cancer had been a marking event for the family, and there was a serious reason to raise funds for the Cancer Council and to raise awareness of women’s cancers. Two years ago Ms Fonsboel’s mother Karin Falkenberg, who attended the night was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. “This is something that is very close to our hearts at Retropia and is why the night was done with such passion, love and enthusiasm.” Ms Fonsboel said most of the women who attended knew someone battling breast cancer, supporting family who have been through and are now breast cancer survivors, but also awareness to all the women to have regular check-ups.” “The more money and awareness that is raised through events like this one held at Retropia will ultimately save lives and that is so important.”

BUILDERS SET TO WELCOME PERMIT CUTS

BUILDERS’ headaches could be relieved under new building standards announced last week. Builders will no longer need to apply for planning permits to build lower height boundary walls on new homes, thanks to a new Victorian Coalition Government initiative. The move aims to cut some of the red tape to save builders and families time and money, boost house affordability and create reforms that align regulatory standards with today’s building practises. Minister for Planning Matthew Guy announced in a statement that under the new reformed building standards, boundary walls of new homes or extensions will have further setbacks and greater heights allowed without the need for a permit. “The Coalition Government continues to redefine planning and building controls for Victoria by delivering common sense reforms that drive better outcomes. “These reforms will save time and money for builders, councils and Victorian families as they build their new homes,” Mr Guy said. Mr Guy said the new rules will be included into Victoria Planning Provisions and align the law with current building practices while cutting back unnecessary red tape. “This is about bringing our planning processes in line with modern building practices and expectations among home buyers saving everyone time and money,” Mr Guy said. The average height of a boundary wall allowed without a planning permit will be increased from 3.0 to 3.2 metres under the reform.
The maximum height of boundary walls is unchanged at 3.6 metres. Neighbours will be notified of any application to exceed boundary wall average or maximum heights, as per existing requirements.
The increase to boundary wall setbacks will allow for adequate fascia and guttering, and the boundary wall height change will enable builders to use ‘waffle pods’ for laying a concrete slab on the
ground promoting efficiency and reducing waste, meet homeowner desires for higher 2.7 metre ceilings rather than 2.4 metres, and allow the construction of garages under the same roof line as the house.

In recent years, Narre Warren has experienced strong population growth across all markets and Oaktree Rise has been well received, with a waiting list for future releases.

Fifty Albert is a mixed-use development comprising 282 residential apartments, which range in size from 50.5sqm to 164.5sqm. This includes 84 one-bedroom apartments, 190 two-bedroom apartments and eight three-bedroom apartments - with two of the latter being double-storey.

Throughout the construction of the apartments, developers gave huge consideration to the value of views from the towers. The layout and form strongly
engage views such as Harbour Park, Edgewater Lake and Jack’s Wood. It is conveniently located only a short walk to many Maribyrnong amenities. The site enjoys excellent pedestrian and cycling accessibility, with easy access between ’the apartments’ and key points of interest along Edgewater Boulevard. Following an eight-year break, Mirvac re-entered Melbourne’s apartment market with a bang when it developed Yarra Point apartments. The towers are now home to almost

A 59-UNIT apartment and townhouse project at 205 Gipps Street Abbotsford that blends social and private housing has been hailed a resounding success by tenants and owners. Using a co-operative housing model, not-for-profit developer Common Equity Housing Limited invests profits from the sale of the project’s 34 private apartments to ensure its 25 social housing apartments are affordable to low-income tenants. The result is five storeys of high-quality apartments in three neighbouring buildings - the penthouse storeys tastefully set back behind a reinforced heritage facade of the former boot factory/warehouse. Deciduous trees in the complex’s landscaped internal courtyard shade the

apartments in summer and allow more natural light in winter. At least half of the social housing dwellings are made available to people on the public housing waiting list. Six disability apartments were bought by the Transport Accident Commission and Summer Foundation. ISLINGTON SILOS BLUE EARTH GROUP BANBURY VILLAGE CEDAR WOODS PROPERTIES LTD ISLINGTON Silos, a residential conversion of the former James Hood Malthouse and associated silos, in Collingwood’s iconic Islington Street has won the Urban Renewal award for 2013. The complex is protected by a Heritage Overlay in the Yarra Planning Scheme, and the statement of significance for the buildings attributes their historical value to their function and age, rather than aesthetic or architectural value. The Silos offer 21 three-bedroom apartments over 11 storeys. At ground level is a gymnasium and an apartment with a large terrace. Each of the 10 levels above provides two apartments separated by the central lift core.
Two impressive glass penthouses are perched at the ‘crown’ of the silos, creating the illusion of floating forms. The soft curves of the building feature large glass walls, capturing stunning views and lending an ethereal juxtaposition. The spacious floor plans allow for generous airflow and an enviable 360 degrees vantage, ensuring apartments are filled with constant stream of natural light. Although not within an activity centre this site is very close to significant concentrations of commercial, recreation and entertainment facilities along Victoria Parade, Hoddle Street, Brunswick Street and other strip centres. It is also very convenient to a variety of transport routes, schools and community facilities.
DEVELOPER Cedar Woods had a responsibility to ensure the values and features of one of the western suburb’s best urban renewal sites were integrated into the final design and benefited the local community. Banbury Village, Footscray, integrates seamlessly with the surrounding area, while also delivering a variety of housing to meet market expectations. To achieve this, Cedar Woods had to deal with, and manage a host of issues including: a harsh interface on three sides; the condition of the heritage buildings and the extent of the hazardous materials to be dealt with; and a range of
buyer profiles and the specific needs of an eclectic community. The feedback Cedar Woods has had from its customers has been overwhelmingly positive, leading to many referral and repeat sales. The developer believes this is of enormous benefit in the long-run with referral sales, positive local council and government relationships, a high level of staff satisfaction through taking pride in their work and – of course – an enhanced corporate reputation. DANDENONG LOGIS ECOINDUSTRIAL BUSINESS PARK PLACES VICTORIA AND MELBOURNE WATER DANDENONG LOGIS has transformed a contaminated, disused site into an environmental showpiece. The 154-hectare industrial business park has received this year’s Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Environmental Excellence award. The Dandenong Treatment Plant in Dandenong South closed in 1996, leaving behind highlycontaminated soil. In November 2005, the State Government announced a $150 million, fouryear land reclamation project to transform the 180 hectares into a bustling commercial and residential hub. The first land at LOGIS South, to the south of Greens Road, was released in 2009 and
LOGIS North land, between Dandenong Bypass and Greens Road, was first released in 2011. There’s a regional wetland for stormwater treatment, rainwater tanks, native plants and mature trees to promote birdlife and wildlife access to Dandenong Creek, Class A recycled water to every lot, solar hot water and natural ventilation, and mulch made from recycled shipping pallets. There are more than 20 hectares of open space for recreation and LOGIS is the first industrial development in Victoria to introduce T5 energy efficient street lighting. Posts feature twin lamps that activate when the roads are busy and reduce to one active lamp when road usage decreases.
AN EXCELLENT model for future mixed-use development, the concepts used in this particular site have not been seen in the Awards for Excellence submissions before. The emerging trend of apartments above the retail environment has been done well with a clear delineation between residential and retail. Circulation and access have been well handled

Great cake A picture of the most glorious looking cake caught my eye in That’s Life magazine the other day and, on reading the recipe, I couldn’t believe how simple it was to make. So I whipped one up while staying at my mum’s place and it was so moist and crumbly and divine, we couldn’t stop eating it. It’s a great standby for afternoon tea when friends pop by in the lead up to Christmas, or serve it warm on Christmas Day with caramel sauce and a scoop of ice cream, as a delicious (but less time consuming) twist on the traditional plum pudding. It’s suitable to freeze, and as it’s an oil-based cake, there’s no mucking around with electric beaters or creaming butter and sugar.

EASY APPLE CAKE 2 cups plain flour 2 teaspoons each baking powder and ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon bicarb 1 cup raw caster sugar (I used regular white caster sugar) 400g can slice apple pie fruit 2 eggs ¾ cup rice bran oil (I used canola oil) 1/3 cup each sultanas and chopped pecans (these are optional) Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius (160 degrees fan forced). Line a 22 cm round cake pan with baking paper. Sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon and bicarb into a bowl. Add sugar, apples, eggs and oil. Stir mixture until well combined. Fold through sultanas and pecans. Spoon mixture into pan. Bake for one hour and ten minutes or until cooked when tested with a skewer. Cool in pan for ten minutes before turning onto a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar, or serve warm with caramel sauce and ice cream. CARAMEL SAUCE: Place one cup each thickened cream and brown sugar and 60g butter into a saucepan. Stir over medium heat until butter has melted. Cook a further four to five minutes or until thickened slightly. This is the last Food Byte column for the year. TAYLORS Hill boxing sensation Jake Ellis has never had to work as hard as he has been over the past six weeks. Ellis has been keeping himself busy in preparation for ‘Once Upon a Time in Sunshine II’ - an event he’s not only organising as promoter, but also fighting in himself. Six days a week Ellis will get some training done in the morning before suiting up to run some errands for the promotion. After a long day of gym visits, poster runs, paying bills and ticket drop offs, Ellis then puts his gloves back on once more and resumes preparations for his third professional bout. “It’s just hard in the sense that if I was to promote, that’s all I’d do and if I was to only fight on the night then that’s all I’d do, and obviously I have my school and all that which is another added pressure,” Ellis explained. “But when you’re doing both it’s very hard. “You’re pretty much, from nine to five, dressed in nice attire going around doing promoting errands, and then once five o’clock hits you have to glove up and become a boxer. “It is very mentally draining and stressful, especially thinking that I’m trying to prepare for a fight when all this other stuff is coming through. But I’m sure it’ll all pay off.” So far undefeated in the ring, Ellis has developed a keen ambition to master the promoting game as well. Ellis’s previous event, his first ‘Once Upon a Time in Sunshine’ promotion, drew nearly 500 people back in August. While that night proved a raging success, Ellis hopes this time around it will be even bigger. “I was shy by about 30 or 40 people from the joint being full,” he said. “I pulled about 500 people, so there was a lot of real positive feedback from everyone. “It was by far my best promotion I’ve ever done, and that’s why I’ve actually felt confident enough to both promote and fight on the same night.”

Crusaders dominate grid By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Western Crusaders Gridiron Club has never quite had a day like it. Last weekend the Footscray-based club provided for a clean sweep of Vic Bowl titles - claiming both the Junior and Women’s Vic Bowl championships in dominant fashion. “It was a massive day for the club,” Crusaders president Scott Hayden said. “To win two grand finals in one day - it was an amazing day for the club, and both teams did their club proud.” First up the Western Foxes women’s team, coached by Hayden, cruised to a comfortable 32-8 win over the Northern Lady Raiders.
Then later in the day in front of a very healthy and vocal crowd at Croydon’s Ranger Field, the Crusaders’ junior team completed the club double with a comprehensive 38-0 shutout of the Monash Warriors. “The juniors have been dominant all year,” Hayden said. “They had one blip on their radar when they dropped their last game of the season. “But then they rebounded strongly in the semi-final and won 60-0 and then came back in the grand final and just killed it.” In one day of football the club almost doubled its trophy count - adding to the Crusaders’ three senior men’s titles. Hayden told Star these latest triumphs provided for one of
the most significant days in the club’s history. “It’s right up there,” he said. “When you talk the biggest days for the club, you’re talking like 1999, when we won our first senior men’s grand final, 2000 when we went back-toback and then in 2007 where we went undefeated. “But this day is right up there with those three, I reckon.” The Crusaders’ senior men’s team finished fifth earlier in the year with a 7-5 record under coach Kriss Guidotti, and will be looking to improve on that record when the 2014 season kicks off next year. Pre-season training will commence in late January at the club’s Henry Turner Reserve base.

star By LIAM TWOMEY SPORTING fans around the world are starting to catch on to the talents of Western Suburbs’ local Dante Exum. The Seabrook resident and Keilor Basketball Association junior is touted as a top five draft pick if he decides to nominate for next year’s NBA draft. If not, he will have a host of college recruiters desperate to secure his services. However, Exum’s astonishing exploits on the court are coming as no surprise to members of the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club.
The 18-year-old is one of hundreds of young athletes from the Western Suburbs who have been nominated for the club’s prestigious Don Deeble Rising Star Award which is sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals while at the award’s grand final, the overall winner is given $5000. On top of that, two runners-up also receive $2500. Sixteen athletes were nominated from June 2012 to November 2013 and are all in contention for the upcoming grand final which will be held in January. Sunshine Western Region Sports Club vice-president Barry Watson is rapt with the standard of nominees the award attracts. “We all are thrilled that he (Exum) is continuing to climb the ladder in basketball,” Watson said. “What an extraordinary effort if
he gets into the top five draft picks. Cecil (Dante’s father) and the family will be so thrilled.” Exum isn’t the only former Don Deeble Rising Star Award winner to be turning heads around the world. Point Cook’s Rachel Jarry secured a WNBA Title with the Minnesota Lynx this year while Werribee’s Jess Cameron is one of Australia’s leading female cricketers. “Rachel and Jess have been outstanding and have great careers ahead,” Watson said. “We all hope and wish them well. The Western Suburbs are producing some outstanding talent and with programs like what’s happening at Maribyrnong (College), let’s hope we keep seeing these youngsters with these talents continue to come through.” Watson also highlighted the amazing contribution of Yarraville Club Cricket Club in providing sponsorship for the award.

The Bush Bash sees teams travel to a country location throughout the state and play in two Twenty20 fixtures on the day. Footscray’s first match came against Essendon in Port Fairy with the Bulldogs being sent in to bat by the Bombers and it didn’t take the batsmen long to find their feet at the crease. Despite the early loss of Dylan Kight, the combination of Dean Russ (21), Travis Dean (32) and Michael Hill (33) helped lift the score to 8/124 after 20 overs. In reply, Brent McMinn almost dragged his side to victory with a powerful 37 from 26 balls. The knock included three fours and two sixes. However, McMinn couldn’t get enough help from his fellow batsmen and the Footscray bowlers took charge with Essendon finishing at 7/116. There wasn’t much time to celebrate the win, with the Bulldogs’ next clash starting almost immediately against Prahran. WILLIAMSTOWN pulled off another recruiting strike last week as it continues to build an imposing list for the 2014 VFL season. The Seagulls secured the signature of Kane Lambert from the Northern Blues. Lambert is as one of the biggest off-season signings in the VFL with the star midfielder crossing over after winning the Fothergill-Round Medal as the most promising young talent in the VFL. He was widely tipped to be drafted in either last month’s national or rookie drafts but was overlooked. As well as claiming the Fothergill-Round Medal, Lambert was selected in the Victorian State Team, made the VFL Team of the Year, came fourth in the Liston Trophy and took out the Northern Blues bestand-fairest award. Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon was delighted to have secured Lambert’s signature. “He’s a quality character and a quality player,” Dixon said. “We were as surprised as anyone when he wasn’t picked up by an AFL club. League goes national THE long and bitter National Premier League saga that has plagued Victorian football has finally been resolved, with Football Federation Australia confirming it will go ahead next season. The FFA stepped in to resolve the long-running dispute between Football Federation Victoria and a group of co-signatory clubs - confirming on Friday the go-ahead for the NPL nearly four weeks after clubs were told to prepare for the Victorian rollout at a meeting in mid-November. The agreement has also put an end to Supreme Court proceedings between the FFV and the co-signatory clubs. “The NPL is an integral part of our national elite player pathway and a hugely important reform of the semi-professional tier of Australian football,” FFA CEO David Gallop said in Friday’s statement. “FFV and its clubs have worked through many issues and agreed on an NPL model that’s now a benchmark nationally in many areas.”
South Melbourne’s Nick Galatas welcomed the news on behalf of the clubs. “The clubs have always wanted Victoria to be part of the NPL in 2014 and now we’ll apply for licences, work as quickly as we can to meet the criteria and get on with implementation,” Galatas said. “The clubs are looking forward to being part of the NPL which promises to deliver outcomes that are in the best interests of football in Victoria.” Established clubs who snubbed the original FFV model for the NPL, including Melbourne Knights, Green Gully and Altona Magic, can now re-apply for the new league. Under the newly-revised model, the implementation of a potential two-division structure will depend on the number of successful applicants. As proposed by the clubs at the November meeting, allocation of the successful applicants will be subject to their placing at the end of the 2013 Victorian Premier League and State League competitions.

For the love of the game IS loyalty dying at local football level? I ask this because of a few events I have heard about in recent weeks. One involves a playing group getting the coach the sack because they did not like his style. Another involves a player who agreed to play for one club, who got him employment, then reneged when offered more money by a rival club. I believe he kept the job. Player power to this degree is not healthy for the game, when they can dictate terms, walk out on contracts and control the big picture at a club, it is akin to the lunatics running the asylum. Clubs that allow this to happen are going to pay the price in the future. However, NPL clubs will be subject to promotion and relegation within a two-tier structure - if implemented.
Other NPL requirements include the appointment of a technical director for each club and the implementation of seven under-age teams from under-12s through to under20s. By 2015, all NPL clubs must also field an under-17s boy’s team.

Nippers wade in AS THE 2013/14 season kicks off, the Western Suburbs’ two life-saving clubs, Altona and Williamstown, will be joining forces for the first inter-club Nippers competition. THE Bulldogs made the news last week after making a few changes to the structure of its cheer squad. While I understand the emotive reaction from the long-standing members of the cheer squad the club has every right to take control of how the cheer squad is run. The cheer squad belongs to the club not any individuals. Gary, Lorraine and David have done a great job over a long period of time but it is not their cheer squad. They have not been sacked from the club. I no longer host the president’s lunch nor the best-and-fairest, which I did for over a decade. Look at the history of current president of the club Peter Gordon, he is a great example of putting his love for the club above anything else. It might be a cliche, but the club is bigger than any individual. I HAVE to say I was surprised to hear Ryan Griffen named as Bulldogs captain last week. I did a function with him on Monday night and he gave no indication what was about to be announced the next day. ‘Griffo’ is an interesting choice because to be honest, I don’t see him as a natural leader, but obviously Brendan McCartney sees something else. There is no doubt he leads by example on the field as he is one of the elite players of the game. In retrospect I didn’t think Matty Boyd was a natural leader either and I was wrong there, hope I am again. One thing Ryan does have is a very balanced outlook on life and a realistic view where football sits in the order of importance. He loves nothing more than getting away from the city and going fishing. GREAT to see two terrific football people appointed to representative coaching roles last week. Former Bulldogs champion Brian Royal will coach the AFL Vic Metro team to play the Peter Knights-coached Vic Country next year. The Metro side will be chosen after the Vic Metro league play off at Visy Park on 29 March. The WRFL team in that series will be coached by Brett Jacobs from the Sunshine Kangaroos who was named WRFL Coach of the Year. Brian and Brett are perfect choices for what they bring in football knowledge and the way they go about imparting that knowledge. THE Rotary Club of Altona City has their 12th annual golf day coming up on Friday 28 February, at Kooringal Golf Club. The day is very popular so it is advisable to get in early if you want to play or sponsor the day which raises funds for Very Special Kids and other Rotary projects.
