At ground zero By KRYSTEN MANUEL “THE smell of rotting bodies from being trapped under the concrete ... I saw the rescue teams and locals coming back and looking under the concrete, trying to figure out how they would get these bodies out,” local business owner Graeme Connelly said. “Just to see the devastation ... They’re living in the ruins. The locals that haven’t left are living under the boards. “When you leave you feel like you’re abandoning them.” In just four days in Tacloban, ground zero for Typhoon Haiyan, Mr Connelly and his friend, Sydney Pastor Richard Tng, distributed two truckloads of food, essentials and tools to 100 families, plus boxes upon boxes of medicine – around $30,000 worth of goods. And that’s just the beginning. “We’re wanting to raise about $100,000 in total,” Mr Connelly said. “It’s going into building materials, food and clothing directly to those who are in dire need that the big guys, the NGOs, won’t reach.” Plans for the whirlwind trip essentially began when news broke before the typhoon hit, and thanks to friendships spanning nearly 6000 kilometres, these plans were able to deliver direct assistance to hundreds of victims. Mr Connelly made contact with several friends over Facebook before the typhoon hit and after a gruelling week of no communication, a message was finally sent – ‘we’re alive!’ Soon, Mr Connelly was in contact with Ps Tng, who in turn had a contact in Dr Gloria Fabrigas in Tacloban and was able to provide a list of medicines needed. Fund-raisers in both Sydney

Survivors walking through the wreckage in Tacloban. and Wodonga got underway, medicine was arranged, lists of building materials were compiled and after several arguments with customs, medicine was delivered and used in clinics the following day. “We spent two days in Cebu shopping. We looked at supporting 100 families, so we bought 100 pairs of thongs, 100 pairs of ladies’ underwear, 100 pairs of shorts, a generator, a chainsaw, food.

“Two truckloads went down and when we got there we distributed food up to a small village that had been blown over. “The good thing was that what we got from the money raised went in on ground zero really quick. The NGOs are doing a great job, but there were some immediate needs and for us there was no red tape, nothing. “The large organisations come in and settle things down, they give the

immediate relief until they can see there’s a system in place with the locals where no-one’s dying and everyone’s getting a bit of food, they will then hop in the choppers and go to the next natural disaster. “And that’s where we come in. “It was really satisfying - we shot an arrow from Wodonga and it flew 4000 miles and hit a bullseye.” In the four days spent in Tacloban,

Mr Connelly heard heart-breaking stories of loss, witnessed families literally living in holes in the wreckage and smelt the foul stench of rotting bodies through the rubble. But what really affected him was the stories of survival and the phenomenal attitude of the people amid death and total devastation. Continued page 3

Regional promise REGIONAL Capitals Australia (RCA) met with Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss and assistant minister, Jamie Briggs last Thursday to discuss the future of Australia’s regional cities. “We are in Canberra today to brief our federal representatives on the importance of investing in the regions, and to gain a commitment that will see Australia’s regional cities as a key component of any new regional development policy, RCA Chair, Cr Mark Byatt said. “With almost 40 per cent of our nation’s population living in regional Australia, it’s imperative that our regional cities feature prominently on the national agenda. “Australia is a diverse nation of regions, all with natural urban centres or regional capitals. These capitals provide a point to access essential infrastructure, services, employment and education for local residents, as well as surrounding towns. “We have made it clear that creating vibrant regional cities requires not only an investment in infrastructure and services but an investment in thinking and planning – a strategic partnership with all levels of government to meet the challenges and opportunities of sustainable growth in Australia. There are many opportunities ahead for Australia’s regional cities, which alone contributed $210 billion to Australia’s economy in 2012. The population growth rate in regional cities is higher than the national average, and projections indicate this will continue over the next decade. If managed strategically, with the right level of thinking, planning and investment,

Front row, Gary Styles of Orange City Council, The Hon Warren Truss, Deputy Prime Minister, Cr Mark Byatt of City of Wodonga, Mr Barry Omundson of Mackay Regional Council, Ken Diehm of City of Greater Geraldton. Back row, Cr Ian Carpenter of City of Greater Geraldton, Cr Rod Kendall of Wagga Wagga City Council, Stephen Griffin of City of Greater Geelong, Cr Ian Abbott of City of Palmerston and Patience Harrington – City of Wodonga CEO. this growth will also provide the opportunity to ease the squeeze on congested metropolitan cities. “Australia’s population is growing rapidly, but not evenly across the country, Cr Byatt said. “RCA believes that with a fairer share of the nation’s resources and a more ambitious commitment to regional growth at all levels of leadership, regional cities can be part of greater growth opportunities.

“We have asked the Australian Government for a commitment to work with RCA to deliver better and stronger regional capitals for the future benefit of all Australians. “We appreciate the time of Minister Truss and Assistant Minister Briggs in meeting with us today, and look forward to developing an ongoing relationship with them to support and partner RCA in creating a stronger regional Australia.

Crime is way down By KRYSTEN MANUEL CRIME in the Albury electorate is dropping significantly according to new statistics from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research. The statistics show a noticeable downward trend in two years up to September 2013 in eight of the major crime categories and 16 of the 17 major offence categories are going down or remain stable. “The decreases in crime is great news for our community and highlights the hard work of our local police officers,” Member for Albury Greg Aplin said.

I am pleased to see such great results for our community… Greg Aplin

Some of the major crime categories that have shown an overall downward trend for the electorate include nondomestic assaults which are down 3.8 per cent, robbery without a weapon down 8 per cent, break and enter dwelling down 6.7 per cent, break and enter non-dwelling down 7.7 per cent, motor vehicle theft down 11.2 per cent, steal from motor vehicle down 3.9 per cent,

steal from person down 10.8 per cent and malicious damage to property down 6.4 per cent. In Albury itself, some particularly impressive downward trends have emerged. “These include break and enter dwelling down 16.4 percent (Albury LGA), motor vehicle theft is down 29.4 per cent

(Albury LGA) and malicious damage to property down 27.9 per cent (Greater Hume Shire LGA),” Mr Aplin said. “I am pleased to see such great results for our community. “These great results are through the hard work of the NSW Police Force backed by the NSW Government. “We have had a rise in one of the 17 categories – steal from retail store which is disappointing. “The NSW Government is committed to driving down crime and we’ll continue to work hard and resource police with what they need to crack down on criminal organisations.”

Typhoon ground zero From page 1 “The thing about the Filipinos is they’ll get in there and have a go. They’re smiling, saying ’thank God we have another chance.’ The chant over there is ’We’re survivors.’ “At one point this guy came up and asked if we had any food, and I said no. He said ’have you got a hammer?’ And we had already distributed it. I was broken, he just wanted food for his kids and a hammer to rebuild his house.” Before leaving, Mr Con-

nelly and Ps Tng met with the vice mayor of Tacloban to ask what their next step would be. Aside from helping those they already knew, the pair were told rebuilding would be the next port of call, but not before mistakes of the past were rectified. “The vice mayor is working out what areas need to be re-zoned so you can’t build,” Mr Connelly said. “What people have done in the past is built on crown land and squatted there, but it’s right on the beach. Most of the people that drowned

were in the areas they weren’t supposed to be.” Mr Connelly is planning to return to Tacloban in February with an even bigger, better plan than before, with more funds and more people to rebuild what the second-most powerful storm on human record took from the people of Tacloban on 8 November, 2013. To donate funds or join the team to rebuild in February, contact Connelly Construction Services on (02) 6024 5077, or Faith City Church on (02) 6056 1200.

Suspicious fire probed by police POLICE are appealing for public assistance following a suspicious fire in Lavington that destroyed a van and damaged a home. At about 5am on Sunday, police from Albury Local Area Command attended a house on Dick Road following reports of a car fire. Upon arrival the fire had been extinguished. At this stage it is believed unknown person/s set fire to a white van parked in the driveway, which spread to the house. Although the van was completely burnt out, there was only minimal damage to the house and the elderly couple inside the premises were not injured. A crime scene was established and examined by investigators. Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page – www1. police.nsw.gov.au/

Cathy’s not happy, Warren MEMBER for Indi Cathy McGowan has expressed her deep disappointment in the Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss’s decision not to honour round five of the Regional Development Australia Fund grants. On Monday, her first question during Question Time was to acting Prime Minister Warren Truss about his Stronger Regions Fund. The projects affected in Indi are the Wodonga downtown redevelopment, the Rutherglen main street and the upgrades to the Wangaratta Saleyards. “These projects are critical infrastructure that is essential for the advancement of rural communities, not only in Indi, but around Australia,” Ms McGowan said.

I know the communities affected will be very upset with the government’s decision to not honour the funding agreements… Cathy McGowan

“There’s been a huge amount of work from many people to get these projects up. “I know the communities affected will be very upset with the government’s decision to not honour the funding agreements.” Acknowledging the serious implications for the people of Indi, Ms McGowan asked when the people of Indi could expect details from the $200 million per year Stronger Regions Fund.

The question read as follows: “Minister, during the campaign you made an election commitment to replace the RDAF by spending $200m a year under the proposed National Stronger Regions Fund. “Minister, your recent announcement that you will not honour RDAF round five projects has serious implications for the people of Wodonga, Wangaratta, Rutherglen and in other beautiful places in regional Australia.

“Our communities urgently need funding. When can we expect details to be announced of the Stronger Regions Fund so that all rural communities can get to work and start planning their futures?” Over the past two months Ms McGowan has met with representatives from all the RDAF projects, and met with Mr Truss’s office to push for their funding. “I’d hope the Minister would

choose to support these projects on their merit, rather than the date they received funding,” she said. Ms McGowan pointed to the fact that although the projects were approved by the previous government, many of them had been in the pipeworks for a long time. “Proposals to redevelop Wodonga’s downtown have been in the works since 1975, and successive governments have failed to support this redevelopment,” she said. “Wodonga had finally organised sufficient investment from state, federal and local sources, as well as private investment. These are serious projects with big implications for our towns they should be above partisan politics.”

Cash for the future MORE than $2.7 million in Victorian Government grants have been allocated to Wodonga Council for its future plans. Wodonga Council Mayor Cr Rodney Wangman said it was an exciting time for the city as it signified the realisation of key projects. The Victorian Government has announced $2.1 million to help fund roadworks on Elgin, Hovell and South streets as part of the Mann’s Central retail development. Work is set to start on the $60 million development which will include a supermarket, discount department store, speciality retail and car parking. “This is the most significant retail development in the city’s history,” Cr Wangman said. “It will be the northern anchor of the city’s CBD and will create 395 jobs when it is completed in late 2015. “The council is working with the developers on this important development which we believe will lead to better out-

comes for city business activation, employment opportunity and investment confidence.” The Bonegilla Migrant Experience will receive $455,000 which will be used for a new visitor centre and enhanced landscaping. “It is expected there will be a steady increase in visitors once this project is completed which will result in a direct economic benefit to Wodonga and additional jobs as a result of this increased tourism activity,” Cr Wangman said. The Victorian Government is also providing $150,000 under the Putting Locals First fund for a growth strategy for the city. The growth strategy will ensure the council has sufficient physical, social and community infrastructure to meet existing and planned growth for the city, which is expected to reach a population of 50,000 by 2033. This funding will be complemented by a $30,000 grant for an economic development strategy.

With newly announced grants, Elgin Boulevard is just one of the key areas set to benefit.

Betty’s banks it HUME Bank announced its plans for financial support of Betty’s Place last week, a local refuge for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Each year Hume hosts a ladies’ luncheon to increase awareness and raise funds for a much-needed cause. In 2014, Hume will focus its efforts in raising awareness and funds for Betty’s Place. The luncheon will be the culmination of a variety of awareness and fund-raising efforts. “Hume staff have been donating clothes and much-need-

year. White ribbons were made available for staff and customers to purchase at Hume branches in support of this cause. Hume’s annual ladies’ luncheon provides the perfect platform to help raise the profile of social matters impacting the local region. The luncheon raised over $37,000 for the Fight Cancer Albury Wodonga Carer Accommodation Centre in 2012 and $14,000 for the Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group Inc in 2013. Hume will announce the details of the 2014 Hume Ladies Luncheon early in 2014.

Adroit’s Michael Salter presenting a cheque to Gerard Van Emmerik of Border Trust.

Adroit on the course LOCAL charities have welcomed donations of more than $10,500 from the Adroit Insurance inaugural charity golf day, surpassing all expectations. Both Border Trust and Youth Albury Wodonga were presented with cheques last Tuesday morning at La Maison. Adroit’s Michael Salter expressed his appreciation for the wonderful support the event received from both sponsors and participants. “While the two major holein-one prizes didn’t go off, there was no shortage of quality golf in the company of friends

and colleagues and we look forward to hosting the event again next year,” he said. “Events such as our golf day enable Adroit to involve our staff in supporting charities in the region we work in and to develop awareness of how relatively small contributions can make a big difference to those providing vital programs and services.” The funds raised are welcome donations for both organisations. Border Trust’s executive officer Glenys Atkins said the funds raised would assist them

in their mission to build a perpetual fund for the benefit of the region, now and in the future. “Our 2013 grant round is proof that our communities have needs that are not being met by other means and we need to keep building the awareness and promoting the benefits of local giving,” she said. “This contribution will make a big difference and we are pleased to have been able to share the reward with Youth Albury Wodonga.” The team from Specialty Press took out the honours on the day.

Don’t be dense, drench ‘DRENCH herd’ is on the list of things to do for farmers at this time of year, though DEPI District Veterinary Officer Dr Jeff Cave said it’s also a good time to take a step back and consider the facts. “Worm burdens will vary between different classes of livestock, so it’s worth establishing what really needs drenching,” he said. “This preparation may save you time and money and reduce drench resistance in your herd.” Worm testing by worm faecal egg counts (FEC) is the easiest way to monitor for the presence of worms and a requirement before treatment.

FEC is the process of determining the number of eggs in faeces and is a fast, effective and relatively inexpensive test and a useful diagnostic aid for all types of livestock. The test involves the collection of faeces either directly from the rectum of the animal or by mustering a number of animals into a clean corner of a paddock for about 10 minutes and then collecting fresh faecal samples from the ground. Different mobs may have different FECs, so it’s worth having a number of mobs tested. “This particularly applies to

your weaners and maiden animals, which have a naturally lower worm resistance and will probably need drenching where the rest of your herd may not,” Dr Cave said. “If and when you do drench, be sure to give the correct dose and use an effective drench.” FECs can also provide information of how effective treatment has been, therefore providing evidence about possible drench resistance. For further information contact your local veterinarian or DEPI Veterinary or Animal Health Officer, or in NSW your Livestock Health and Pest Authority.

Save time and money by heeding expert advice at drenching time.

Letters Ending harassment CONGRATULATIONS to Dr Peter Mourik and Lesley Jenkins for putting so precisely the opinions of so many Albury residents regarding the people who harass the women and their support people who enter the Englehardt Street Fertility Control Clinic. After having written, and read the many letters and complaints of those who have experienced the behaviour of the people who stand outside the clinic and who harass those who enter I have looked up the meaning of the word “fanatic”. The Macquarie Concise Dictionary says “1. a person who is extremely enthusiastic about or devoted to an activity, practice, etc. 2. a person with extreme and unreasoning enthusiasm or zeal, especially in religious matters”. The Australian Oxford dictionary describes “fanatic” as person obsessively devoted to a belief, activity, etc ... excessively enthusiastic”. In my opinion a person who is “obsessively devoted” definitely cannot have true compassion for any other living beings. Wendy Cole, Albury.

Whipping frenzy YOUR feature photograph of the winner of the Wodonga Gold Cup horse race on page 3 last Wednesday is a clear reminder of the bizarre anomaly that exists when it comes to beating animals. The whips are out and are being used with a vengeance on these horses. Why is it still deemed

okay to whip a horse (at the end of a gruelling run), causing pain and distress, when it is illegal to beat any other animal? The reality is that it is not okay to whip horses, any time or any place. It is cruel. And it is pointless as it has been proven to not make the horses run faster. Glenn Wilson, Tallangatta Valley.

DIY funding ON ATTENDING the TAFCO AGM last week in Myrtleford, I was surprised to hear our new Independent Member, Cathy McGowan, suggest to the gathering that communities of Indi should not rely on government funding, either now or into the future. Instead, communities should band together and ‘do it themselves’. I was left to wonder if the Independent Member, Ms McGowan, was aware of the impending decision by the Federal Government not to fund the round five grants which the Labor Party had proposed prior to the election? Were her comments then, regarding discussions she held with Mr Hunt, Minister for the Environment (actually a member of his staff), as much ‘pie in the sky’ as the comments she made at a Candidate Forum held in Wodonga prior to the election? Here she had boldly advised us that, should she win the election, Indi would be in safe hands and Prime Minister Abbott would be knocking on her door, rather than she knocking on his! How times seem to have changed! E. Enid Donadio, Freeburgh.

Eyes on honeyeaters BORDER residents are being asked to keep an eye out for one of our rarest birds as they disperse to take advantage of the seasonal bounty of flowering native trees and shrubs. “Volunteers have already made a huge difference in the ongoing work to save the threatened Regent Honeyeater (Anthochaera phrygia),” Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) senior biodiversity officer Glen Johnson said. Mr Johnson said seeing as International Volunteer Day 2013 was last week, it was important to acknowledge that volunteers had put in more than 4600 hours monitoring 37 captive-bred Regent Honeyeaters released in the Chiltern Mount Pilot National Park earlier this year. “Those birds are now on the move and likely to travel distances of more than 150 kilometres to feed on flowering gums including yellowbox and Blakely’s redgum that are currently in blossom right across the region,” he said. “Regents are even attracted to planted flowering natives such as bottlebrush and grevillea in roadsides and bush gardens. “The nomadic habits of this species as it follows nectar through South-east Australia makes them very difficult to monitor. Now we need people in North and central Victoria and Southern NSW, to check their local patch of flowering gums to see if one of these remarkable birds turns up.” Dean Ingwersen, BirdLife Australia’s National Regent Honeyeater Recovery Co-ordinator said the volunteer effort so far involved more 130 people contributing a combined total of 680 days monitoring and had generated over 4000 individual GPS records enabling researchers to map movements and chart survival. “Thanks to volunteers working with DEPI and BirdLife Australia staff we know that at the 15 week post release

stage nearly 80 per cent of the released captive-bred birds were still alive,” Mr Ingwersen said. “That’s an extraordinarily high survival rate for captive releases generally, and exceeds results achieved for past Regent Honeyeater releases in the same area. Importantly, five of the 2010 release birds were also recently recorded alive and well. “Volunteers can do their bit by reporting Regent Honeyeater sightings (and colours of leg bands seen) or by joining local groups such as Landcare and applying for grants to protect and restore habi-

tat under the Victorian Government’s Communities for Nature program.” This project has been co-funded by the DEPI Natural Resource Investment Program, DEPI Hume Region, BirdLife Australia, and Taronga Zoo and the Friends of Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park. The Regent Honeyeater is listed as ‘threatened’ under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act and is listed as critically endangered under the Commonwealth Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC).

BORDER residents have collectively raised $12,478 as part of this year’s McHappy Day to be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The funds will provide muchneeded support for RMHC to expand their programs and help seriously ill children and their families. In addition to raising funds, volunteers from the community played a big role on the day with fire brigades, police and local businesses giving up time to help collect donations or providing items to be raffled for fund-raising. A troop of celebrities and VIPs across the country were also out in force meeting and greeting customers on the day to raise funds at over 900 McDonald’s restaurants nationally. “I want to thank the AlburyWodonga community for all their efforts and for getting behind McHappy Day to help raise valuable funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities,” McDonald’s Albury licensee Maree Cables said. “The funds come just in time for the festive season and will allow us not only to continue offering our

Purchase any

current range of programs, but will also allow us to expand our programs and services.” In total Australians raised over $3 million this McHappy Day - this equates to funding over 23,000 tuition sessions through the Ronald McDonald Learning Program, which helps children recovering from serious illness catch up on missed schooling. To date, McHappy Day has raised over $23 million for RMHC. In order to meet the growing need from families, over the next few years, RMHC is aiming to build or extend five Ronald McDonald Houses, open eight more Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, as well as extend and develop other programs such as the Ronald McDonald Learning Program. RMHC programs and services help families right throughout the often long journey to recovery. This includes providing a ‘home away from home’ in a Ronald McDonald House for a night, or even a year, so that families can stay together in a friendly environment; through to providing school catch-up services through the learning program.

Festival of the dance AN EVENT described by participants as “the best ever in Wodonga” has wowed the crowds across the city. Everybody Dance Now was held on 30 November and 7 December and included a wide range of dances at a variety of venues across the city, with much of the activity focused on The Cube Wodonga. The dance styles included ballet, Irish, folk, belly and African. Wodonga Council marketing, tourism and cultural development manager Simone Hogg said large crowds attended both events. “We have received some fantastic feedback from both participants and those who attended who have described it as the best event they have attended in the city,” she said. “Dance has such as wide appeal to a vast range of people and I think this is why it was so enjoyed.”

฀ ฀ ฀ Tom Strachan’s limited edition works are sure to appeal to patrons of all ages.

Riot of pottery By KRYSTEN MANUEL ZANY zucchini vases, kooky clam bowls and teapots worthy of a Mad Hatter’s party cheerfully occupy every free space in local artist Tom Strachan’s studio. With bright colours and clever, delicate textures, each piece tells a story - with many finding their origin in the beauty of local flora. “I’ve been investigating working with parts of the local environment for a long time,” Strachan said. “One of my favourite pastimes is to go out to Mungabareena - the trees there are incredible. “I did some research on them and some of the older river redgums are 700 to 1,000 years old. When you look at them you think ‘wow, they’ve been through so many storms and summers and environmental change over time.’ You can see it, they have a presence about them. “A gum tree is a very ordinary but iconic Australian symbol. Part of the idea of using them is to show their extraordinary quality.” Strachan’s latest exhibition, opening this Friday, will feature several types of

ceramics, including 28 porcelain preserved local plant species. Derived from a workshop that visited Albury TAFE, Strachan has carefully chosen local flora, dipped it in a special paper fibre clay, fired the piece and set it in a deep shadow box for presentation and security. Driven by this same passion and eye for natural beauty, Strachan has also developed a range of ceramics using the technique of press moulding. “I came across this tree on Eastern Hill,” he said. “I saw the incredible textures in the bark and thought ‘this would be a good tree to press and make some vases and platters out of.’ I’ve been making some pressings from trees out at Mungabareena but this tree really interested me because it has quite a lot of variety in all the directions of the textures. “So I got my trailer and wheelbarrow and wheeled 30 kilos of clay up there and pressed the tree.” Teapots with a twist will also be on show, with their deliberately brilliant colours and fine, Japanese rice paper patterns. “It’s very functional, painted, decorated, highly colourful work,” Strachan said.

Box office

“I’ve been playing with the idea of the painted image and the printed image to make the surfaces a bit more optical. “Colour is a focus too because I like bright colours and complementary opposites. For example yellow and purple - they become brighter when you put them next to each other. The colours in their unfired state are a lot different to the finished product - they’re a lot more pastelly and not as bright.” With so much work and thought going into each item, it seems almost ironic that the process of firing can make or break a piece. But to Strachan, that’s also the unique beauty of his chosen practice. “You submit the work to the kiln and there will be firing faults,” he said. “There’s no guarantee everything is going to work. It can be a bad thing when you have a lot of faults and you’ve spent so much time on them, but it can be exciting to open up a kiln and see a new design or form and it’s maybe better than what you were hoping it would be.” Tom Strachan’s ceramic exhibition will be held at Creators Art Space, Lincoln Causeway Wodonga, with opening night on Friday 13 December, 6-9pm. The exhibition is also open Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 December from 10-4pm.

Young warrior is game if you are By KRYSTEN MANUEL MOVIE: Ender’s Game STARRING: Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley DIRECTOR: Gavin Hood DURATION: 114 minutes THANKS to a severe deficit in marketing and some shoddy previews, I was not prepared for this film to be as good as it was. Some 50 years ago, the world was attacked by a hostile alien army called the Formics. If not for the heroic actions of Mazer Rackham (Kingsley), all would have been lost.

In order to protect the world from an inevitable counter-attack, human children are groomed for battle - tested and monitored in a bid to find the next Mazer. One of these children is Ender (Butterfield) - a social outcast and seemingly weaker contender with brilliant leadership and strategic skills. Ender soon makes it up the ranks under the hopeful, watchful eye of Colonel Hyrum Graff (Ford), and is transported off Earth to the Battle School training station, then to Command School on a planet closer to the Formics’ home.

With training from Mazer Rackham himself, Ender is pushed to his absolute limit physically, mentally and emotionally before the final test. Battling with a constant tug of war between an unparalleled talent for battle and a desire for peace, Ender’s purpose is suddenly not so clear. An adaptation from the 1985 book by Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game has a very strong and engaging storyline with well-developed characters. Unfortunately, the film does leave some questions unanswered. For one, why child soldiers?

WELCOME to ‘Dhurany’ meaning news in Wiradjuri. Another year drawing to a close and it has been a year of positive outcomes. The National election was held with a strong focus on amending the constitution to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; there has been a commitment to around 50,000 new employment opportunities across Australia and in this region the roll out of both the State and Federal Close the Gap programs has seen not only an increase in Aboriginal people working to improve the health and wellbeing of the community, the programs are delivering much needed education and support to those most in need.

Healing through art BLUE HEALERS – Healing Through Art – is an adult Aboriginal women’s social inclusion and health group that has been running for over four years. It was initially established by a private donation and has over the years been supported by Anglicare, Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation, Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service and currently funded and auspiced by Hume Medicare Local. On Wednesday 20th November the group gathered at the Library Museum to unveil the beautiful quilt made with love and passion for the whole community to view.

Q: What does it mean for the Westside Community?

Lyn Bell L B Lyn Bell ll Ab Aboriginal i i lO Outreach Officer with Hume Medicare Local You know when I’m around when I say brightly “Good Morning” I’m best known for working within the Aboriginal community I barrack for no one…don’t like competitive sport I get frustrated when people are defined by skin colour My ideal holiday destination is tripping around Australia Someday I will find more time to read I often say, first think about what you are saying….. My ideal Sunday is going for a drive in the country I’m grateful for my family What do you love about your life? My grandkids What has been your biggest achievement? Obtaining a job in health due to studying hard What or who helped you to get to where you are today? Family and friends who support me.

Q: What is Westside Restorative Action Practice Team all about? A: The team is made of staff and volunteers joining with the community in hopefully resolving any issues that may occur without judgement that uses a Restorative No- Blame approach.

Q: What does it do? The No-Blame Conference / Circle brings issues out into the open in a safe, non-stigmatizing environment, where everyone has the opportunity to speak openly about what has been happening and the impact that harmful

It means an opportunity to be open and honest with each other, also an opportunity, in a confidential situation, where there is no blame and no shame that can lead to solving conflict, resolving harm and promoting community wellbeing.

Q: How did you get involved? An opportunity was available to participate in a Restorative Conferencing training course to learn how to solve conflict in a safe, positive and effective way.

Q: What do you do? The team meets weekly to look at ways of using Restorative Conferencing and Restorative Circles to promote a healthy community where someone or something has been harmed.

Q: How can it benefit me? We do this by using Restorative Conversations where we get everyone involved together to solve and resolve the harm done in a respectful manner to those that have been harmed and those that caused the harm.

Q: What have you achieved? The benefit is that harm can be resolved without further conflict and it builds respectful relationships, restores trust and promotes understanding throughout the community. As a team we have learnt to deal with conflict and harm in a better and more constructive way. Using Restorative Practices has had many positive outcomes and effects for the Westside Community over the last year. We as W.R.A.P.T, have awareness that using Restorative Practice is an ongoing journey and we all have a long term commitment to the journey in our community

LOCAL ARTISTS IN SYDNEY On Friday 15 November Murray Arts accompanied a group of local Albury-Wodonga Aboriginal Artists to the Black Arts Market in Sydney held on Saturday 16Sunday 17 November as part of ‘Corroboree Sydney’. Vivien Naimo, Murray Arts, and Sharon Edwards flew to Sydney with bulging bags for the stall. My bag, full of Artworks, weighed more than 16kg. Marlene Plunkett, Kelly Lock& Ellie Plunkett & Robert Murray, drove to Sydney in two cars and after negotiating Sydney traffic arrived late Friday to set up their stall. Held in one of the historic wool handling wharves, Pier 2/3 Walsh Bay became the Corroboree Club, market space and cinema with the huge space transformed into colourful stalls.

History of Fire, another perspective THE use of Fire by the traditional owners of this area was first recorded by early colonist south of Wodonga around the 1850’s. Around 1880 near Wahgunyah early settlers escaped the devastation of a massive wild fire thanks to the warnings and knowledge of local Aboriginal people who warned them and consequently ensured that their stock, possessions and families were saved. The north east of Victoria has suffered from a number of devastating wildfires in the past decade and it was as a result of these fires that the Kuku Thaypan people in Cape York sent a messenger to the Ngan Girra festival offering condolences. Local traditional Owners have since visited the Cape to learn about the use of fire and through this partnership the local landcare groups in the north east of Victoria are now looking at alternative methods to looking after land. Last week the Kiewa landcare group sponsored an Indigenous fire use forum at La Trobe University in Wodonga with guest speakers including Dr Beth Gott, ethno botanist, Peta Standley co generative

Sam Japarulla Wickman, Steven Pollock, Jo Bell Ash Edwards and Allan Murray researcher Kuku Thaypan Fire management research project and PhD candidate “The importance of campfires” Larry Towny from the Lachlan CMA (doing research on Traditional fire practice) to mention a few. There is a growing interest in the traditional use of fire to enhance rare and threaten vegetation, to reduce fuel loads and eliminate weed species.

Home interaction program for parents THE Albury Wodonga community has been successful in attracting HIPPY ( Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters) funding for 2014-2016. Over the last 12 months an active advisory group consisting of representation form Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health, Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation, Westside Commu-

nity Centre, Woomera Aboriginal Cooperation, Community Working party, Gateway community Health, Wodonga City Council and Greater Southern Area Health Service has worked towards securing this opportunity for the community. The advisory group will continue to meet to work through the role out of the HIPPY program

through the local area. During the month of December the HIPPY Australia Consultants will also host a commencement visit with the advisory committee in Albury Wodonga to further discuss details of the HIPPY program. Corroboree Flame WITH the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge looming large in the background, the opening smoking ceremony and lighting of the cauldron took place on Friday night. I felt privileged to be watching the Corroboree Flame come towards the wharf and the dancers waiting to rise up to accompany the flame towards the Corroboree Firelight. Archie Roach performed on the first evening and was joined by Jimmy Barnes for one song which was unexpected. Over two days, visitors poured into the venue for the unique experience of meeting the Artists and purchasing their works. Visitors spent hours touring the stalls before returning to purchase and many walked out with their ‘Corroboree’ bags. The variety of goods on the Murray Arts tables attracted both lookers & potential buyers. Several of Sharon’s woven necklaces are headed to Europe as Christmas gifts. The Black Arts Market was a great networking opportunity and the Plunkett family reconnected with others from the Boandik Nation, of which there are believed to only be 4 generations left. Marlene was close to tears on meeting the lovely ladies who dropped by for a chat. The weekend was a wonderful experience and as was suggested in the opening speeches ‘a long time coming’. We look forward to being invited back in 2014Vivian Naimo.

Black Border Performances

PREMIER performances by this fabulous group of Aboriginal actors thrilled the border on Thursday 28th and Saturday 30th November with a display of short pieces that were not only educational, informative but often hilarious. Keep an eye out for this group when future performances are advertised. A special acknowledgement is made to Bobby Whybrow AWAHS for his ongoing commitment and support to this group.

Happy Christmas and safe New Year From Hume Medicare Local

This program provides opportunity for Aboriginal women to develop supportive relationships while participating in art therapy and information workshops.

Best wishes one and all for a happy, healthy and safe Christmas and may all your dreams for the New Year come true. I would also like to thank all the supporters and friends of the Albury Wodonga Campus Indigenous Student Services for their assistance over 2013 and look forward to working with you again in 2014.

AWCNI run the groups weekly and there is a particular focus on engaging women who have experienced domestic and/or family violence. Cafe Amore Fine way to dine By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S no secret Riverdeck is arguably the most well positioned cafe in the region thanks to Noreuil Park’s towering shady trees and luscious green grass looking out to the mighty Murray. But that’s just the beginning of what Riverdeck has to offer this summer. Having just started twilight dinners, you can now enjoy amazing food, quality coffee and even a cheeky glass of wine as you watch the sun go down - the perfect end to the week. “We’ve just started doing dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and that’s something we’ll run through until around mid-March,” owner Alex Smit said. “Dinner will be more of a twilight thing, so you can come down here after work, have a drink, have a meal and enjoy the sunset in Noreuil Park. We don’t have much lighting so usually when the sun goes down that’s stumps for us. “For dinner we’re featuring an oven cooked whole baby trout with a cous cous stuffing, as well as an open-faced lamb back-strap burger.” But if you’re more inclined to take the family out to enjoy the warm swimming weather during the day, an impressive breakfast and lunch menu is also available. “For breakfast we have your tradi-

tional cooked eggs on toast, but we also do a lovely eggs benedict,” Mr Smit said. “We roast our own granola and make our own berry compote. We also make our own banana bread in-house and serve that with a maple syrup and cinnamon butter, which is quite yummy. “For lunch we offer fish and chips which is the perennial favourite. We make a chicken lentil burger, we’re going to start rotating some salads through the menu, and last year we made a great marinated lamb salad which we will probably see again at some stage. “We also offer soft serve ice cream - we put that in our milkshakes which makes them extra delicious - and we pride ourselves on our coffee. We have a great blend of coffee out of Melbourne - Italian dark roasted blend from MAP. It’s consistently good and we have several people here that are barista trained.” And if that’s not enough, Riverdeck also sends their famous ice-cream tricycle around the park, packed with delectable Norgen Vaaz ice-cream. All this plus everything Noreuil Park has to offer makes for a seamless day or evening out for anyone and everyone. “This is a phenomenal park, there’s not many places in Australia where you can see such a long stretch of river, let alone the Murray River,” Mr Smit said. “The other week, every morning I came in there was a platypus playing in

the water in front of us, it’s incredible. “I always say this but we do feel very privileged to be able to work here.” In just three short years, Riverdeck has positively boomed and rest assured, Mr Smit takes every opportunity he can to better and expand his locally loved business. “There are a lot of questions around the Riverdeck with regards to its lease and whether it’s going to get developed,” he said.

I always say this but we do feel very privileged to be able to work here… Alex Smit

“ At this stage the best I can say is that I’ve been in discussions with AlburyCity and we’re hoping to be able to make an announcement soon. We’ve had a couple of concepts drawn up that look great and could really develop the full potential of the site.” Riverdeck is open seven days a week - Monday through to Friday, 8am-4pm, and Saturday Sunday open from 7am. Dinners are served Thursday, Friday, Saturday Sunday from 5.30 until sundown, roughly 8.30pm (bookings essential). Riverdeck is located in Noreuil Park, call 02 6023 5980 for inquiries and bookings.

For the ultimate outdoor dining experience, you can’t look past Riverdeck at Noreuil Park.

Oasis of cool in the alps By KRYSTEN MANUEL WITH the typically scorching summer heat well on its way, who would want to be anywhere else but the region’s cool oasis - the Alpine Shire. Lucky for those who love good food, good people, a good drop and breathtaking scenery, the Dederang Hotel is smack bang in the centre of it all. “It’s what attracted us here in the first place, hotel owner, David McKnight said. “It’s on a very busy road, it’s half an hour to Albury Wodonga, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Bright, Mt Beauty and Yackandandah. It’s not far to go anywhere - even the snow isn’t far away! David has been at the helm of the hotel for over 24 years, and in that time has encouraged clever renovations including the beer garden, wood-fired pizza oven and three pristine self-contained cabins for those who just can’t get enough of the place. In the heart of the Kiewa Valley, the Dederang Hotel was erected in the early 1900s, but became a licensed hotel in 1935. ‘If only the walls could talk’ many stories over many beers have been told between the hotel’s historic walls, and nearly a century later, people still flock to Dederang for more of the same, attracting everyone from avid fisherman, to footy and netball clubs, artists, snow-seekers and of course patrons of the infamous Dederang Races. Upon entering the building, a familiar, friendly atmosphere draws U HH HU W % RUG V % %H KH W Q R

you in, the walls covered in historic memorabilia, trophies, photos and of course - the quintessential ‘pub wallpaper’ (old money). As you make your way outside with a perfectly poured, ice cold beer in hand (Star FM’s ‘best beer on the Border’ competition winners), you will find yourself in the most generously spaced undercover beer garden you’ve ever seen. With the rolling olive green mountains and bluebird skies in the background, you notice the distinct aroma of wood-fired pizza wafting under you eager nose. But, if you’re in the mood for something different, you can’t go past the pub’s menu - laden with all your favourites including steak, kievs, mixed grills and more, the locals say you just can’t go past the parmy. So now you’re full of delicious rustic county cuisine (and probably a few of those well-poured beers), you’re going to need somewhere to put head to pillow. Lucky for you, David has three brand-new cabins on offer. Each with two bedrooms, kitchen, balcony and polished floorboards, these little cabins could entice you to stay for more than one night! So don’t miss your chance to experience this perfectly located piece of history and Aussie culture. Although it’s on the way to many great things, those who have been there call it a destination. You can find the Dederang Hotel at 4326 Kiewa Valley Highway, Dederang, or call 6028 9325.

The Dederang Hotel - on the way to many beautiful destinations, but a fantastic destination in itself.

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

Versatile property shines By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S a rare gift to find a centrally located property with a double garage, single garage, triple carport and workshop. Perfect for those with caravans or boats, for families with extra cars and even those looking for space to start up a business from home, 291 Lawrence Street is full of possibilities. Situated across from the tennis courts and just minutes away from the city centre, this property offers two separate driveways - one double remote control lock-up garage and one gated triple carport. The entryway to the home is also gated for extra security and a security door is fitted to the front door. Once inside, guests are met with a tiled entry opening up to the formal lounge. This room enjoys an abundance of natural lighting with a ceiling that reaches two storeys high, accommodating the staircase to the upper level. The formal lounge also offers gas heating, with ducted cooling throughout the home and refrigerated cooling on the upper level. Through to the kitchen and the main feature here is a 900mm cooktop and dishwasher. This area is open plan and also looks out to the living room, which offers a gas imitation log fire and bar.

With two sliding doors leading to the outside entertainment area, it’s clear this home is made for those who appreciate a social lifestyle. The large entertainment area is completely undercover, with concrete floor and overhead ceiling fans. The bottom level of this home also features a laundry and separate toilet. Up the staircase will take you to a study/rumpus room overlooking the formal lounge. This room gives way to bedroom one, with its extra built-in storage and view of the tennis courts. Bedroom two is queen size and also offers a built-in robe, while the master bedroom is of the same size but also features a walk-in robe and spacious ensuite. The main bathroom is also located on this level, complete with separate shower and bath. Outside is an established but lowmaintenance garden, set in a large backyard which also houses a water tank. Unattached to the home itself is number 291’s best feature - the workshop. This area, while smaller, is also connected to the single lockup garage - the perfect place for an artist’s studio or tradie’s workshop - the space is only limited by your imagination! Don’t miss your chance to inspect this uniquely versatile property.

Albury Wodonga

Regional attraction

Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

townhouse prices are equally dramatic. The median price for a two-bedroom apartment was $415,000 in Geelong - more than double that of a two-bedroom townhouse in Traralgon, where the median was just $206,000. Research is essential for buyers whether it be investors looking for the highest rental yields or capital growth, downsizers wanting to free up home equity or those looking for a tree change who may be moving to areas where they’re not familiar with the market. Suburb by suburb information about median prices according to property type and number of bedrooms for the 12 months to September is now available free on the REIV website. Go to reiv.com.au/BedroomMedians Investors will be particularly interested to know that this also includes weekly median rents, gross rental yield and five-year annual capital growth. Simply click on a blue coloured area and all the information about it will appear.

FOR those buying a home in regional Victoria, the big attractions are often the lifestyle and affordability. However regional Victoria is a very diverse region with large price variations so house price data which merges all sales in regional Victoria is not always helpful. While median house prices are useful for analysing property market growth, a few particularly high sales in the larger towns can skew results for the entire region. So breaking down prices according to the town or suburb in regional Victoria can give buyers a more detailed and useful snapshot of what is happening. So, too, whether it was a house or unit and how many bedrooms it had. For example, while the median price for a three-bedroom house in Torquay was $585,000 in the year ending September 2013, in Bendigo it was $308,000 and in Colac it was just $200,000. The differences in apartments and

Rental rates buck trend WHILE the rentals vacancy rate was slightly higher in regional Victoria last month, the differences between towns are so marked that whether or not the data brings good news depends where you are. The overall regional rate was 2.9 per cent, up from 2.7 per cent in September. That bucked the trend - until September, it had fallen for four consecutive months from May’s high of 4.1 per cent. The vacancy rate was just 1.9 per cent in Bendigo and Loddon, where the New Bendigo Hospital is tipped to create an even greater squeeze, pushing up yields and rental returns. Median house rental prices in Bendigo were stable at $301 per week in October, the same as in September, al-

though that had been an increase on the August figure of $281. Wodonga , Shepparton and Goulburn and Ballarat and the Central Highlands also recorded low rental vacancy rates - 2.2 per cent in each centre was bad news for tenants, but good news for investors looking to buy to let. Ballarat’s median house rental prices rose $10 per week in October to $280. But in Warrnambool and the Western district the vacancy rate was 4.5 per cent, while it was 5.3 per cent in the Latrobe Valley and South and West Gippsland. Although still high, this was actually good news for investors because it is trending lower, from July’s high of 6.7 per cent. In Geelong and the Barwon region,

Drop off your screen door at Wunderbar for

October’s rental vacancy rate was 3.7 per cent, down from 4.9 per cent in September and well below the year’s high of 6.7 per cent recorded in May. The median house rent in Geelong was $338 in October, down $2 per week on September. Investors are increasingly active in the Melbourne housing market and the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics housing finance data showed a rise in the value of investment housing loans nationally- up by 5.2 per cent, seasonally adjusted, in September. Investors looking to buy in regional Victoria should carefully study their individual target markets as their yields, rental return and ease of finding tenants will vary greatly across the state.

Everyone’s a winner, baby By KRYSTEN MANUEL, Pictures: ADAM WILSON THIS Friday will see a winner emerge from an inter-club grudge match between East Albury Blue and East Albury Maroon under 12 cricket sides. In a unique game structure, the boys already played half the game last Friday, with scores sitting at 1/72 - Blue and 3/54 Maroon. “We have the edge on them at the moment but anything can happen,” East Albury Blue coach David Grant said. Grant said despite the promise of competition, the match was more about the development of skill and celebration of personal achievement. “We all train together and essentially we’re one team divided in two with 28 boys in total,” he said. “We don’t focus on the win, we really don’t take much notice of the score during a game. “The boys are competitive, they try really hard, but at the end of the day it’s about having fun and developing cricketing skills for later in their career.” Grant said both sides were primarily composed of beginners, with rapid improvements seen in a matter of just weeks. Several players in particular have demonstrated great improvement and talent. “For my group of boys, I’ve noticed some of the young fellas who really had no idea how to bat or bowl at the start - just three and a half games ago - have really improved,” he said. “Anthony Thomas really struggled to bat or bowl and he’s now at the stage where I’m retiring him after five or six overs to give the other boys ago, so he’s spending time out there and proving himself to have some versatility. I’m very happy with his progress. “And Mitchell Houlihan batted a full 10 overs out before I retired him for a spell. These two kids who were beginners have shown character and grit and determination up against some more talented boys. “Issack McGrath is one of the best wicket keepers I’ve seen for his age - there’s a talent there. “Will Elgin is a good all rounder - a really talented lad, and my boy Jayden Grant - his bowling and fielding are very good.” The game was structured to span over two days, one week apart and played in quarters. “One team bats for 20 overs and then they take to the field and the other team bats for 20 overs

Ben Jorgorson, Jamison Scott and Max Diffey.

Will Elgin scoring a 4. and that’s half a game,” Grant said. “It’s not like regular cricket where there would be a close of innings and then they have a second innings the next week, it’s only one innings and they play it in quarters. The total game length is 40 overs per team.” And it all wouldn’t be possible without the tireless work of John Milosta. “He is the prime mover for the junior section of the club, even though he looks after everybody,” Grant said. “He promotes the junior level, turns up to almost every game, he needs a pat on the back!” The second half of the East Albury Blue Vs Maroon match will pick up this Friday from 5pm at Alexandra Park.

Local Sport Albury is well in touch By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALBURY Touch competitors were in fine form last Tuesday evening at Jelbart Park. With summer competitions almost at a close for a six-week break, both junior (Under 7, 10 and 12 years) and adult mixed teams were making the most of round eight. Albury Touch administrator Kate Stevens said the sport was a great social opportunity, with volunteers always encouraged. “It’s more of a social sport,” she said. “We do take the scores of course but it’s not as results oriented as football, basketball, soccer and things like that.” For more information, visit www.alburytouch.com or call 0418 166 762. Wodonga, let the games begin IN JULY 2014, the City of Wodonga will play host to approximately 1800 university and TAFE students from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania as they take part in the University Games. This is the first time that Wodonga has played host to a University Games event, with the games set to descend on the city from Sunday 6 Thursday 10 July next year. Wodonga Mayor Rod Wangman said that the city and surrounding region was looking forward to hosting the Games. “This is a major coup for Wodonga and will bring significant economic benefits to our businesses, in-

cluding accommodation providers, food outlets, transport operators and many others,” Cr Wangman said. “We are thrilled to have secured the hosting rights for this event and believe it is testament to the quality of the sporting facilities here in Wodonga that an event of this size and scope will be held here in 2014.” The Games have proven to benefit the local economies of previous host cities through increased tourism dollars, in particular for accommodation providers, restaurants and cafes and local transport operators. Each year, the Southern University Games is held in a different regional centre in Victoria, recently

travelling to the likes of Ballarat, Traralgon, Geelong and Bendigo. Sports on offer are expected to include Australian Rules Football, basketball, cheer, cross country, football, futsal, golf - singles, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, squash, tenpin bowling, tennis - singles, touch football, ultimate and volleyball. The Southern Univesity Games will be run concurrently with the Northern University Games (Sunshine Coast, QLD) and the Eastern University Games (Newcastle, NSW). The three games are lead-in events to the Australian University Games, to be held in Sydney from 28 September to 3 October.
