Little birdie tells GC all about Alex HIGHTON’S Alex Hecker is more than just a pretty face. The Miss Universe Australia state finalist and Spring Racing Carnival ambassador, pictured, is also smart, preparing to begin a masters in cultural heritage at Deakin University next year. Alex tells the summer edition of Geelong Coast magazine (GC) she plans to eventually shun the catwalk for a career in archaeology or museums. “I’m really fascinated in Aboriginal and Australian history in general but the Westernisation of cultures around the world also fascinates me,” she says. City Hall pulls out of lobby By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S council has split with Committee for Geelong, finally ending a meddling and fractious relationship, according to former mayor Barbara Abley. Council decided this week to allow its membership of the committee to lapse, citing the committee’s new corporate structure as a public company. City Hall was a foundation member of the lobby group in 2001 at an annual cost of around $20,000. The membership lapsed on 14 November. The financial membership was a long-running contentious issue, with a number of councillors opposed to paying the annual fee. Ms Abley as a councillor unsuccessfully raised several notices of motion seeking immediate termination of the membership on grounds the committee interfered in council processes. In September last year, during her final term on council, she asked City Hall to seek urgent legal advice on alleged misuse of a committee database in the mayoral election and urged the council to resign immediately. Ms Abley this week still “firmly believed” spending ratepayers’ money on membership of an organisation that lobbied council over developments and investments linked to other committee members created a “real conflict of interest”. “In my view, and in the view of

members of our wider community, the line was often crossed by this organisation, using its power and influence to actively involve itself in council matters, conflicting with its stated brief,” she said. “The committee made a conscious decision to involve itself in the politics of local elections by publicly backing certain candidates. “Over the years, the committee has publicly used its power to often and unfairly denigrate council and City of Greater Geelong when it suited its own purposes.” The committee’s new structure proposes a local government member category available to City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast and Golden Plains shires and Borough of Queenscliffe at a cost of $12,100. The committee announced a new chairperson the morning after council formally wound up its membership on Tuesday night, with lawyer Dan Simmonds replacing accountant Michael Betts. Committee executive officer Rebecca Casson said the organisation respected the City’s decision. She said the committee developed a “robust model of advocacy” and had a “strong record of working collaboratively” with the City. Ms Casson said the Committee was not defined by one single member and would continue to have “direct engagement” on key issues with the City.

Tom Hornsey, playing for Memphis Tigers, and Cameron Johnson, with Ohio State Buckeyes, have delighted their American coaches with their kicking proficiency. The former St Joseph’s Football Club players have enjoyed meteoritic rises in American college football ranks, with both on track to make the professional national league. Hornsey made the top three of a prestigious Ray Guy award, given to the best college punter in America. Johnson was a semi-finalist. Punters are used defensively to kick the football deep into the opponent’s territory to improve field position.

He’ll be scouted, there will be trials and an invitation to the NFL combine where they undergo testing. “It all ends at the NFL draft to see if he is chosen by one of the 32 professional teams.” St Joseph’s club secretary Brett Bentley said Johnson had been a rookie-listed player with Melbourne. “It’s good for these young guys – even if they don’t quite make it in the AFL there are other pathways to professional careers,” Mr Bentley said.
“The club is rapt for them and hopefully they can make a career out of it, they’re both good athletes.” Hornsey told US media he was honoured to be in the top three for the Ray Guy award. “I suppose it is a good reward for the hard work I have put in but also for the people that have made this happen - all of my coaches and my coaches back in Australia,” he said. Hornsey has been Memphis’s punter since his freshman season in 2010. His 43.1-yard career punting average ranks eighth among top division punters. Johnson’s coach, the widely respected Urban Myer, described the young punter as a “valuable weapon”, lauding his knack to put back-spin on the ball using his Australian Rules football skills.

Jail for bashing patron TWO former employees of a central Geelong nighclub have received suspended jail sentences for affray and recklessly causing serious injury following a group attack on a patron in May. Magistrate Ron Saines convicted Andrew Cafarella, 21, of Kilgour St, Geelong, and Dane Wise-Graham, 23, of Jabiru Cls, Ocean Grove, fined them $2000 each and handed them one-month sentences, wholly suspended for 18 months. Leading Senior Constable Scott Bell told the court Rumours Nightclub manager Mark Currie, regular patron Sean McInness and doorman Thomas
Coates were also involved in the violent James St incident. The victim was “dragged to the ground where he was pushed, punched, elbowed and kneed several times to the head and body while he tried to cover up”, Sen Const Bell told the court. He said the incident followed the victim aggressively taunting people inside the nightclub after his eviction for fighting with McInness. “The crowd controller, Mr WiseGraham, came down the stairs at a fast rate, pushed Currie aside and jumped over the entry barrier then threw a punch at the victim, forcing him backwards onto the road. The victim retali-
ated before Currie and Coates joined in the assault upon the victim. “The victim was knocked to the ground and kicked several times by Coates and Wise-Graham.” Sen Const Bell said Cafarella, the club’s RSA officer, joined in the group attack soon after, punching the victim several times to his upper body while he was held up against a car. “He was then taken to a shop where he was pushed up against the glass and left there.” Snr Const Bell said the victim required emergency treatment at Geelong Hospital for a broken wrist, a sore neck, cuts, grazes and bruising to
the head, body, arms and legs. Defence lawyer Shane Balkin told the court Wise-Graham became involved after hearing the victim threatening others’ families, grabbing hold of him and receiving a punch before throwing one. “The victim was almost his own worst enemy on this night - he was involved in two separate incidences.” Cafarella told police he was “just helping friends making sure nobody got injured”. “This is often a very difficult working environment and they’ve pleaded guilty to reacting in an inappropriate and excessive manner,” Mr Balkin said.

AN $11 million rescue package will keep Jetstar at Avalon Airport until April 2015, Premier Denis Napthine has announced. State Government will cover half the cost and airport owner Linfox and Jetstar will contribute the rest after the budget airline revealed financial losses were threatening its Avalon operations.
Driver sentenced A CORIO man was “lucky” to have avoided killing someone when he drove “erratically” on the Midland Hwy, according to a Geelong magistrate. Magistrate Ron Saines gave Michael Sheen, 30, of Hopkins St, a six-month suspended sentence for weaving between traffic in a “manner dangerous”, prompting numerous 000 calls.
Parking trial CENTRAL Geelong parking will be free on Saturdays and one-hour limits will extend to two hours under a three-month trial to revitalise central Geelong, Mayor Darryn Lyons has announced. He said the trial, from January to the end of March, would also include a five-minute extension of a “grace period” on expired tickets.
By NOEL MURPHY SURF Coast Shire hopes its marginal state electorate will secure a thirdtime-lucky win on Spring Creek from the Coalition Government. Council voted 4-3 this week against developing the green space, rejecting an independent panel’s report on a contentious C66 planning scheme amendment. The vote restated council’s desire to set Torquay’s settlement boundary at Duffields Rd, preventing residential development of Spring Creek Valley. The proposed C66 amendment will go to Planning Minister Matthew Guy for his final say. Mayor Rose Hodge said she hoped he listend to council. “This is the third time the council has voted in the majority. This is about democracy, about the community, which has spoken.” The Government and Mr Guy also needed to acknowledge their thin grasp on power and Torquay’s marginal electorate, Cr Hodge said. “He’s got to be brave in his decision-making and accept what the council and the community wants. We’ve got all the requirements for growth towards the north of Torquay.” A 120-strong gallery welcomed council’s vote with applause. Dissenting councillor Rod Nockles was disappointed at the “a wrong call” but said he respected the right of council and the minister to make their decisions.

Victim trapped RESCUERS had to use “jaws of life” equipment to free a car accident victim at Belmont, according to an SES spokesperson. The spokesperson said the rescue took about 30 minutes at the corner of Mt Pleasant Rd and Francis St on Saturday.

Gallery crashes library, heritage centre By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG Gallery is gate-crashing its way into the city’s new $45 million library and heritage dome. Before building starts on the controversial Johnstone Park dome, a “temporary solution” to the art gallery’s space problems has been brokered with City Hall to partition 220 square metres for artworks. Council arts and culture portfolio holder Michelle Heagney said the gal-
lery’s size left it “severely limited” in the exhibitions it could host. The “shared exhibition space” would revert back to the library “in future years”, Cr Heagney said. Director Geoffrey Edwards said the gallery next needed a business case for further development options to display more of its permanent collection and enhance its public programs. Cr Heagney pointed to a 2010 report that broached the idea of expand-
ing into the new library or building another gallery elsewhere. “We have also identified another option of expanding into a new wing that could be constructed on the plaza next to City Hall.” In the meantime, the gallery is staging an exhibition of ceramic artist Stephen Bowers’ work, Beyond Bravura - JamFactory Icon 2013, blending art historical references with Australiana motifs and icons from popular culture.

Review could open Leopold to bay but ‘waste time’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A PLANNING review could give Leopold public access to Corio Bay. But Leopold Tourism and Leisure Park proponent Denis More said council’s decision to review the town’s structure plan would only waste more time on opening up the suburb to the bay. Mr More has battled City Hall for almost a decade to have his land north of Portarlington Rd included in structure plan. The long-running saga began when he built a harbour without a permit and was forced to fill in much of the site.
Council earlier this year asked for a report on possible land uses for the area other than urban development, including access to Corio Bay. A report to council this week said a “more comprehensive review” was needed to “properly address the issue”. City Hall received 481 submissions on the land-use review, the report said. New rural zones provided “some flexibility” on land uses, the report noted. Leopold’s strong growth supported a “large-scale review” of the area north of Portarlington Rd, the report said. Mr More has promoted his proposed tourism
facility as including foreshore parks, barbecue facilities, an inland harbour, walking and cycling paths, camping and caravan services, boating facilities and waterfront holiday accommodation. But he had “genuine concerns” the new review could “set us back four or five years”. “It appears to be another structure plan in the making and that takes time. It hasn’t been allocated funding and there’s no timeframe indicated. “It may well be do-nothing option. We spent 18 months on the last report and this doesn’t advance things. “I might be wrong – I hope I’m wrong.”

Survey reveals ‘unusual’ holiday vacancy rate on coast

FEW accommodation centres are booked out on the Bellarine or Surf Coast two weeks from the start of the peak summer season, according to an Independent survey. Online agencies such as wotif.com and lastminute.com have hundreds of units, hotel rooms, cottages and other venues available from Portarlington, Queenscliff and Barwon Heads to Tor-
quay, Lorne and Apollo Bay. Rooms for two adults and two children are freely available at no less than 30 sites, from modest apartments to top-line hotels and resorts. Torquay venues such as Beachfront Resort Torquay, Golf Retreats Torquay, OnShore Torquay, Whitewater Apartments and Coast Retreats Victoria have vacancies listed all through January. Peppers, Torquay Holiday Park, Tropicana and Bells Estate Great Ocean Road Cot-
tages have vacancies from the first week of January onward. Lorne has numerous vacancies throughout the second half of January at venues including the Cumberland, Lornebeach Apartments, Mantra, Anchorage, Grand Pacific, Comfort Inn, Great Ocean Road Cottages and Lorne Cottages. Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove have vacancies right through December and January at Barwon Heads Resort at 13th Beach. Seahaven Village, Riverside

Geelong Bellarine Tourism boss Roger Grant said the trend was a concern but reflected shorter breaks rather than lengthy holidays taken by increasingly digital-savvy visitors who kept a close eye on the weather. “We’ve seen more and more in the
last couple years very late, last-minute bookings,” he said. “It’s has a lot to do with the fact people are taking short breaks of two or three days rather than traditional three or fourweek holidays. That’s the grim reality of what we’re facing in this digital world ... that’s the state of play.” Local industry figures said the downturn in bookings in the region was “unusual” and “lousy weather” was contributing to the lack of visitors.

WHILE three of Geelong’s defence force sons are home safe and sound from Afghanistan, another local family will face an empty place at the Christmas lunch table this year. Geelong digger Kieren Dawson will spend Christmas on deployment at Al Minhad Air Base, in the United Arab Emirates, where his skills as a diesel mechanic are in demand. Corporal Dawson admitted he was bracing for Christmas away from Bendigo-based wife Rebecca and parents Paul and Lyn at Grovedale. Cpl Dawson said he knew he was doing an important job for the Australian military in support of the mission in Afghanistan. “My job involves repairing all manner of road transport vehicles and trailers. I also conduct regular servicing and manage maintenance workshops providing training for younger trade personnel.” The 26-year-old is on his second deployment with the Australian military to the Middle East. In 2010 he was in Tarin Kot, in Afghanistan, helping restore regional stability. “It’s been a real privilege for me to witness the positive changes regarding our contribution in Afghanistan, especially the development of the Afghan National Security Forces. “The Australian Defence Force has made a large contribution to Afghanistan and I could see that from the moment I stepped foot on the ground for my second trip, three years after my first,” he said. Mrs Dawson said this Christmas would be the first apart for the couple. “It goes with the territory. We’ve already missed birthdays and important dates, so you kind of get used to it. “But you still worry.”

GEELONG’S council is likely to include funding for a feasibility study into a convention centre at Limeburner’s Point in City Hall’s next budget, according to Cr Bruce Harwood. Cr Harwood, this week reelected as deputy mayor, said Limeburner’s was still the designed site. Former mayor Keith Fagg halted the project because he wanted to revisit other potential sites, particularly Deakin University’s waterfront campus car park. “We’re pushing hard with the steering committee to put some

Brewery cheers for what ales city A BEER-led recovery could help bolster Geelong’s economy amid the gloom of business closures and threats elsewhere. International brewer Lion launched its $60 million Little Creatures brewery at South Geelong this week, planning to churn out 1.25 million cartons of beer in its first year. The brewer will make its boutique Little Creatures and White Rabbit ales at the heritage site, which will become its new Australian east coast base.
Lions expects the brewery to create up to 100 jobs. V/Line charges $27K too much By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN HUNDREDS of Geelong rail commuters are out of pocket an average $17.45 each after V/Line overcharged on date-to-date tickets, according to the Public Transport Ombudsman. Ombudsman Janine Young said the overcharging was part of a “major systemic issue” in which V/Line overcharged ticket purchases between 2004 and 2011. V/Line overcharged when an announced fare increase was included pro-rata in date-to-date tickets purchased before the rise took effect, she said. But commuters would stay out of pocket unless they had evidence of ticket purchases, Ms Young said. It was one of 241 V/Line cases referred to the Ombudsman, up from 159 last year, a 52 per cent increase. The ombudsman launched an eight-month investigation following a single complaint of overcharging. Ms Young said V/Line identified that 1551 tickets were affected, with a total overcharge value of $27,092.

“Consumers are forewarned of fare increase amounts and dates with an announcement by the Minister for Public Transport and the Government Gazette. Consumers may then save money by purchasing a periodical ticket at the current price for the period after the fare increase takes effect.” However, Ms Young said V/ Line loaded the new fare into its ticketing system so the increase would be charged from the effective date regardless of the date of purchase. Date-to-date tickets offered unlimited travel between two designated locations such as Geelong to Melbourne from 10 to 52 weeks. “We considered that the current fare should have been applied to the entire ticket and not just the period prior to the date of the fare increases coming into effect,” Ms Young said. “In our opinion, the fare calculation resulted in consumers being overcharged.” Ms Young said V/Line claimed it was unable to reimburse affected travellers because consumer
details were not recorded when tickets were sold. She said V/Line estimated the cost of identifying, contacting and refunding all impacted consumers would be $75,000. Ms Young said V/Line donated the overcharged amount to Travellers Aid. V/Line also undertook to reimburse affected consumers where proof of purchase was provided, she said. Public Transport Users Association Geelong branch convener Paul Westcott said V/Line should make it as easy as possible for affected passengers to claim reimbursement. “I hope it’s not going to be a bureaucratic nightmare for people to claim their due. A bank statement should be sufficient proof of purchase.” Mr Westcott said V/Line’s failure to alert its customers to the issue was “not good enough”. “It’s hard to believe they couldn’t have done something to try and alert people,” he said. “I hope the same thing’s not happening with myki.”

Christmas in Geelng Geelong has been transformed into a festive wonderland thanks to this year’s creative collection of Christmas decorations This year, primary school students from all over Greater Geelong have been working hard to create one of our major Christmas decorations in Central Geelong. The students took time during their final school term to hand decorate 28 Christmas trees, to form a spectacular forest of Christmas cheer. Each tree is 2.4 metres tall, and features individual designs from each local school. Come down and see the Christmas forest in Lt Malop Street Central. Other Christmas decorations brightening up the city include giant stars at the Carousel, plus stickers and banners on footpaths and facilities all around Central Geelong. Christmas yarn bombing have also appeared along Malop Street!

Lyons on steep learning curve By NOEL MURPHY HIS FEET have hardly touched the ground since being propelled into Geelong’s mayoral office but Darryn Lyons is doing little to ease the pace. The first few weeks on the job for Geelong’s new mohawk mayor have included spruiking the city, hosing spot fires and elevating Geelong’s profile with widespread TV, radio, newspaper and online coverage of his election. He was in Canberra the day of Clive Palmer’s maiden speech and as the Abbott Government grappled to redress the Gonksi funding issue to meet figures including the Prime Minister and opposition leader Bill Shorten. Soon after returning home he confronted Jetstar’s bombshell that it could exit Avalon. In between he has had meetings with premiers, MPs, City Hall department heads, lobbyists and councillors. “Within a week of getting into office I’d had meetings with the prime minister and leader of the opposition,” Cr Lyons told the Independent. “What was achieved in that first week was quite extraordinary but we have to keep that momentum of change going through the place. “There are changes to be made, I’m not going to make any bones about that but we have some extremely talented officers and staff. “I had a meeting and asked

Now that’s not reactive, that’s proactive. “There’s a mislaid perception that a lot of people are walking around here doing nothing.” But Cr Lyons was concerned Geelong was unrepresented to higher tiers of government with a single voice and that multiple approaches confused and confounded council’s prospects. Canberra wanted to speak with one person who was across everything Geelong and it should be the mayor, he said.
“There’s been a lot of people running about with their own agendas and no cohesion. We need people to look at Geelong as a major investment for the future. “It’s vital we advertise with the brand that’s just walked in but I don’t want to run business, I want to facilitate business to run.” Cr Lyons’ inner sanctum at City Hall overlooks Johnstone Park, perhaps a ready simile for the change he hopes to effect. The park was once a swamp and dumping ground for animal carcasses - today it’s a sparkling advertisement for Geelong.

Country club’s making music THE LOVE of a bit of twang accompanied by some slide guitar has made an enormous contribution to the Geelong community. While some with differing musical tastes might dispute the value of some good old downhome country music, its hard to argue with close to $300,000. That’s the amount the monthly Tombstone Country Music event has raised over the past 14 years for charities around the region and the state. “Not bad for a small monthly show,” grinned organiser Murray Walker, with typical rural understatement. “It’s not high profile but the word gets around and all the country music lovers know about it - we have our regulars.” Every fourth Sunday of the month the cars roll up to Murray’s place in Shaws Rd, Teesdale, where his dedicated band of volunteers swings into action, directing car parks, selling tickets and ushering to seats. Graeme Lear is what Murray calls a “foundation artist” at Tombstone Country, having played countless gigs at the event. But he couldn’t get it done without his “chief organiser”, Jessie - she doesn’t organise the event, she just organises Murray.

Tombstone Country has a couple of long-time business supporters, enabling the show to raise all those funds. The Big Shed furniture store donates the first prize for a raffle run each month, while a meat tray from Bannockburn’s Supreme Meats helps raise more dollars. Murray puts on a sausage sizzle around lunchtime and the live music kicks off at 2pm, followed by an afternoon of country fun for just a $5 admittance donation. And the people at Geelong Dialysis Unit, Linton Fire Brigade, Rotary Club Bannockburn, Geelong Coast Guard, Geelong Veterans Welfare Centre, Variety Club, Red Cross Geelong and Leukaemia Foundation Geelong are all so glad Murray is still happy to make the effort.
The event was born in 1999 after a pub gig that Murray and Graeme played and where they became a little “peeved” at the bar closing early. “So we thought we’d start our own country music gig instead,” chuckled Murray. “It started as just a private thing. We invited about 50 people but it went public pretty quickly and now we regularly get 200 out here.” Murray’s love of country music is behind it all, demonstrated by his own CD of songs. Murray greets everyone at Tombstone Country each month with his rendition of Welcome to my World - coincidentally the title of his album. Each month has a feature artist, which has included international acts that dropped in while on tour. And why the rather dark name Tombstone Country? Murray said the Teesdale cemetery across the road left him no choice. Beach toilet terror By NOEL MURPHY A MAN who menaced joggers and children after emerging from a toilet at Eastern Beach might have been off his medication, according to witnesses. East Geelong’s Paul Monk said the man was abusive and physically and verbally threatening. He was concerned the man had been loitering inside the Eastern Beach toilets while children were on school holidays. “I was jogging with my brother and his wife and their five-year-old on a bike and three-year-old in a pram when he came out of the toilets at us, swearing and talking
about ‘mind rape’ and strange stuff,” Mr Monk told the Independent. “He started walking behind us while we were jogging but after about 100 metres he was talking louder and louder. Then he charged at us. “My brother and I told him to stop because we had kids and he was scaring them. He said something about his childhood being ‘f ... .d up’. We said, ‘Mate you’re scaring the kids, we’re going for a run, leave it’, and we kept running up to the Eastern Beach car park. “He kept talking and walking behind us. When we stopped again he had a black bag and was reaching into it.
“I was thinking I hope there’s not something in there. We told him we were ringing the cops and he got very angry.” Mr Monk described the man as 182cm tall with dark hair and wearing a dark blue jumper and jeans. He said the man appeared to have been “off his meds” or “perhaps just out of jail”. “My real worry was he was coming out of the toilet, how long had he been hanging about in there.” Police attended the scene but were unable to find any sign of the offender. They asked anyone with information to phone Geelong Police on 5225 3100.

A NEW book documents Geelong residents of all ages playing up. Geelong based charity Bluebird Foundation commissioned Playing Up to explore human development through games and play. Geelong residents aged 10 to 94 years contributed stories and illustrations for the book as part of Bluebird’s program of fostering community arts. The picture storybook aims to inspire children “to look beyond the screen” for “the fun in simple things”. Bluebird’s Bron Lawson said Geelong Botanic Gardens would host a Playing Up launch this Sunday. “We are excited to share this unique little book and it seems that the Geelong community are just as keen to get their hands on it,” Ms Lawson said. Individual donors and Geelong council’s community arts grants program funded the book. Letters Above their stations WHILE public sector head office relocations such as TAC, NDIS and possibly WorkCover offer a degree of economic stimulus (Independent, 6 December), some local employment opportunities and no doubt cobble votes, investment in rail infrastructure demands serious incremental government monies. Window dressing has its parameters. Both the Napthine Government and Daniel Andrews-led ALP with, their combined support for the East-West Tunnel public transport contradiction, port asset sell-offs et cetera, need to be held to account locally rather than remaining Melbourne-centric in the lead up to the November 14 poll. Irrespective of his second-tier governance ambitions, well done to Cr Andy Richards for his timely expose of what has been, despite commuter growth, inadequate railway station infrastructure, which doesn’t factor in future residential growth at Armstrong Creek, Lara, North Geelong, Batesford and Bannockburn. Car parking, as noted by Cr Richards, is grossly inadequate across the board. Geelong and South Geelong stations are all but lost causes. Lara, given pending residential development, requires significant parking upgrades and North Geelong, given its siting and land availability, has the capacity to become a key rail commuter hub. Geelong ideal host for G20 meetings OVER the last few months Committee for Geelong (CfG) has been working with City of Greater Geelong on a proposal to host an international Group of 20 (G20) meeting in Geelong next year. This proposal was still firmly on the agenda when the CfG and the City made their joint annual visit to Canberra last week. Our visit was very timely because Australia took over as G20’s host country on 1 December. Some argue this is the biggest thing Australia has ever done internationally. G20 manages the international economy and takes action to ensure its ongoing viability. Many arrangements have

Who owns that now? Any compensation was gobbled up by smart bandits. What has our Federal Government done? It has tried to establish a prison camp for asylum seekers on Nauru and done nothing else. Nauru has plenty of sea but large pirate ships of other nations have been allowed to plunder it any way they can. No industry has emerged on Nauru, like boatbuilding. Little soil is left but nothing has been done to improve fertility, although seaweed must be available. Food must be imported. Claims don’t ‘ad’ up HEALTH Minister David Davis is lucky he is not in retailing or his newspaper advertisement last week trumpeting a 12 per cent pay rise over three years to paramedics could have seen him charged with deceptive conduct. Paramedics have not had a pay rise since August 2011. The offer runs until November 2017, so it is in fact 12 per cent over five years. Equally important is what he did not write: the 10 weeks annual leave Mr Davis referred to includes all public holidays, which paramedics are not allowed to take as single days, and time in lieu for overtime for staff on a permanent 40-hour week. Mr Davis did not tell Victorians that the fourdays-on/four-days-off work roster comprises two 10-hour days followed by two 14-hour nights. It is at least a 48-hour week. Nor was there mention that paramedics usually worked several hours beyond their allocated shifts. Mr Davis’ advertisement was silent on the push for volunteers to replace trained paramedics in country areas and for paramedics to face forced relocation anywhere in the state. Further, his plan would reorganise shift penalties and slash tens of thousands of dollars from members’ superannuation accounts over their careers. Ol’ boys to rock at RSL By MICHELLE HERBISON GEELONG RSL will host a “rollicking night of rock and roll and controlled mayhem” with stage stars Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde next week. Holden told the Independent he and Wilde would celebrate early ’60s rock and roll favourites including the hit songs of Ol’ 55, Skyhooks and Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons at the RSL on 21 December. “All that’s wrapped around a very hugely entertaining stage age where Wilbur and I bring all the things we’ve learned over our 35 years of experience in live music, television and theatre. We tell a lot of stories - and some of the stories are true!” Holden teased. Geelong’s own Skyhooks drummer, Freddie Strauks, and The Vibrants guitarist Mick Hamilton would join the duo on stage, adding to the cavalcade of classic Aussie rock, Holden said. “There’s a lot of audience involvement and interaction - we’re a great choice for a Christmas break-up. It’s sort of like a private party with me and Wilbur.” Holden said he and Wilde were still tolerating each other’s company after having worked together since 1975 when they both joined NSW-based rockand-roller band Ol’ 55. Both had worked in various corners of show-business but always loved returning to the stage, with Holden citing fronting Ol’ 55 as “his favourite thing to do”. “We love to hear the applause of an audience. It’s really visceral and immediate.” Reflecting on his own career, Holden said he “never really had a plan” but always made the most of available opportunities. “I’ve been involved in rock and roll, TV presenting and acting in TV, theatre and film. I’ve found over the years that working in each of these different media helped me work in the others.”

Zeptepi airing at coastal gigs By MICHELLE HERBISON LIVING in Australia for nearly 13 years seemed enough time to permit Zeptepi front-man Phil Read to start telling this country’s stories in song. The English singer-songwriter-guitarist told the Independent the band’s latest album, Coming Up For Air, was its eighth but “probably its first” to explore Australian stories. “My family came from the southwest of England, so those were the stories that were already in me but I’m now branching out and discovering other stories,” Read explained. His inspirations for Zeptepi’s folk-post-punk-rock songs often came from old books of folk tales he discovered, with updated lyrics to the band’s own melodies. “That’s at its heart what folk music’s all about - taking the traditional and making it contemporary to bring to a new audience.” Read said Zeptepi had undergone various transformations with more than 10 different members since he first advertised for bandmates in 2004. The current five-piece lineup brought a range of influences including jazz, reggae and celtic folk, Dean said with a bemused laugh.
GOTTA ZEP: Zeptepi plays three dates around Torquay beginning this Sunday. “It does work but I don’t know how. With the arrangements, generally I’m bringing in the songs and everyone brings their own stuff to it.” Alongside Dean, Zeptepi now comprises Paul Angas on drums, Patrick Lyons on bass and Geelong region locals Carlos Thornley on electric banjo and Claire Johnstone on fiddle and vocals. “Funnily enough, Claire is the first person who’s been in the band who’s actually come from the same musical place as me,” Dean mused. When Thornley introduced Read to Johnstone less than a year ago, she told him her favourite song was The Waterboys’ Fisher-
man’s Blues - to which he instantly responded: “Alright, you’re in.” Dean, Thornley and Johnstone recently toured the UK, playing festivals and pubs as an acoustic trio - a “low-key” event to “dip a toe in the water” that exceeded all expectations, he said. The trio discovered music permeated European culture almost as much as AFL did in Victoria. “You really pick up on the passion and enthusiasm people have for it,” Read recalled. Zeptepi will play Torquay’s Cowrie Market at 1pm Sunday, Bellarine’s Harvester Moon on 4 January and Torquay’s Nightjar Markets on 30 January.

MUSICIAN Tim Henwood’s indifference to joining young band Palace of the King quickly vanished when The Superjesus guitarist heard their music for the first time. Henwood had declined a request to become the band’s singer, instead suggesting he help them find someone. “Then they sent me the music and I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m not going to let anyone else be the singer in this band’,” he laughed. HENWOOD said he was now loving the raw energy of touring hard with Palace of the King, having played more than 100 shows around the country this year and releasing two EPs. The younger members of the six-piece blues-rock band were excited about music in a way Henwood was rediscovering after
years in the business, with acts to his name including The Androids, Rogue Traders and Chocolate Starfish. The Airey’s Inlet-based Henwood said Palace of the King’s other members had all met through playing in various rock and roll and blues bands around Melbourne. “It’s funny how rock music’s become this alternative underground thing that’s not mainstream anymore but that’s the way it is,” he mused. “You don’t have radio really playing rock music anymore, so it’s just like the ’70s all over again - you just have to go out and do lots of gigs.” Henwood will perform with both Palace of the King and Chocolate Starfish at Motor City Music Festival in March. Sad circumstances led to him joining Chocolate Starfish fol-
lowing the death of guitarist and founding member Zoran Romic last year. “It’s kind of a tribute to him that the band are out there playing his songs,” Henwood said. The high-energy, stadiumrock band had reformed after about a decade break when cancer struck Romic and he asked Henwood to step in. “They have such great, kickass hard rock riffs with this crazy singer (Adam Thompson) singing hilarious songs and jumping around the stage,” Henwood explained. “I just try to play it like he played it on the records.” Motor City Music Festival will “rock Geetroit” at Geelong Showgrounds over three days in March, offering something for everyone with both over-age and family-friendly events.

FRESH: French flair combines excellent dynamics to make Renault’s latest Clio standout.
FRESH from its victory as ‘best light car’ in the annual Australia’s Best Car Awards for 2013, Renault’s new Clio continues the advance of the French company’s rebirth downunder. The Renault Clio is now in its fourth generation and is offered in three specification levels in Australia; Clio Authentique, Expression and Dynamique. The Authentique starts at $16,790, the Dynamique tops out the range at a still reasonable $23,290. Styled by Laurens van den Acker new Clio doesn’t follow the current mainstream shape that’s become somewhat passé thanks to its adoption by too many marques. Rather, Clio has a slim grille that expands in its centre section
A clever feature is a new design of speakers in the front doors, called Bass Reflex technology, that give far better low-end notes than you would expect from their diminutive dimensions. Two turbocharged petrol engines are offered, one a threecylinder 900cc unit producing up to 66 kilowatts of power and 135 Nm of torque. The other is a four-cylinder that’s virtually the three-cylinder with an extra pot attached to give it a capacity of 1.2 litres. Its peak outputs are 88 kW and 190 Nm. The three-cylinder engine comes only with a five-speed manual gearbox, the four-cylinder has a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual. It comes as no surprise that the little Renault Clio has supple suspension that provides good comfort and nimble handling.

The main event took place in Times Square New York, with TV and social media audiences worldwide viewing the event. Invited guests in Sydney joined live audiences in Los Angeles, Detroit, Barcelona and Shanghai, with a strong display of historical Mustangs taking centre stage in Sydney. Ford Australia hosted Mustang owners from clubs around the country who enjoyed the theatre of the occasion with Top Gear Australia presenter Shane Jacobson compering the big event. Unmistakably a Ford Mustang, but with strong lines that show the Ford’s latest design theme, particularly in the area of the ‘Aston’ radiator grille, this all-new model is particularly important to Ford Australia. Ford’s Mustang is like Jeep Wrangler, Porsche 911, even Fiat 500 and VW Beetle in that enthusiasts won’t let the designers interfere too much with the original shape - and we like that attitude.
With local manufacture about to end it’s vital that the local branch of the Ford Motor Company promotes itself as a car importer. Mustang will most certainly give the company a positive push. Exact details of the new Mustang as it will be seen in Australia are yet to be provided, but we are told its price will begin at a remarkably low sub$50,000. Two engines will come here, the traditional 5.0-litre V8 in uprated form with 420 horsepower (about 313 kW) and an ultra modern EcoBoost 2.3-litre turbocharged four producing 300 horsepower (227 kW). It’s good to see the new Mustang will be sold with a manual gearbox, though to be honest the optional automatic transmission is likely to be the biggest seller. Both transmissions have six forward ratios. Naturally, drive is to the rear wheels. Though Ford Australia airfreighted a convertible to Sydney for the official launch it will also be sold here as a hardtop coupe.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE Geelong region could have three bids for a National Premier League (NPL) soccer licence after a legal challenge to the process was settled. North Geelong Warriors was part of a group of 65 Victorian clubs that issued the challenge against Football Federation Victoria’s plans to introduce the new licences. The federation abandoned the proposed semi-professional league two weeks ago but the national body intervened to negotiate a settlement. Two other Geelong groups had
indicated an interest in applying for a NPL licence - Geelong Galaxy and Surf Coast Soccer Club. Both previously lodged bids for the licence under the old criteria but the settlement includes a change in the application process. North Geelong president Ivan Beak said the club was interested in looking at the new provisions. “It’s a new system and we’re still learning about it. We’re awaiting more information on the application process. “Nothing’s set in concrete at this
stage. We’ve had a chat about it at board level but we have to address it in more detail and look at getting members involved as to what they think.” Geelong Galaxy committee member and chair of Football Federation Geelong, Jack Karpinski, said the consortium was still considering its position. “They’ve only just sent out the changes, so we don’t have a position at this point until we get more information out of FFV.” Surf Coast Soccer Club’s spokesman Joe Taylor said the club would
resubmit its application. “Our understanding is that FFA was keen that the national league did happen and came in and forced an agreement with FFV. It does mean another application process but it appears the criteria have been simplified a bit. “All the major premier league clubs are back in and there’s a new deadline for applications, so that may mean a slight delay to the start of the season. “But it will be good for the region and good for the sport and we still think we have a really good chance.”
Fishing hard work but worthwhile amid variability On the

Variable conditions forced anglers to work hard for fish over the past week. Many anglers spent the first full weekend of the cod season at Lake Mulwala and on the Edwards River. Both locations produced reasonable numbers of cod and yellowbelly. Stan Hicks caught five cod at Mulwala on local shrimp. Only two of his fish were of size but the biggest was a beauty of 89cm. Renowned travelling outfit Bendigo Legion Angling Club visited the Edwards River where James Harvey landed the best fish, a 77cm specimen also taken on shrimp. Closer to home, Lismore’s Lake Tooliorook again produced trout over 2kg on bait and lure. Mudeye was the hot bait and Daiwa Double Clutch proved their worth again. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree produced trout late in the evenings on mudeye-pattern flies. During the day the fly to use is a small brown or pheasant tail nymph. Bait anglers need only mudeyes suspended around 1m under a bubble float. Recent rain should leave the Barwon River high and discoloured to well after Christmas but the redfin should really fire up as the water clears. Surf anglers hit the rock platforms between Lorne and Apollo Bay in perfect conditions last weekend. Bait anglers struggled but lure-casters had plenty of fun on the salmon. Most of the fish were generally between 600g and 900g but were at least in big numbers. Black Rock produced snapper and

Squid, flathead and garfish dominated but a number of gummy sharks were also taken, along with a couple of big tailor. Glenn Sharp cast soft plastics from the shore between St Leonards and Edwards Point for a catch of five flathead to 65cm. Whiting captures continued to improve, with many anglers catching bag limits last weekend and others who struggled a little still being rewarded with exceptional quality fish. Some of the best bags were taken after dark in Lonsdale Bight on fresh squid. Snapper were caught on bait and lure from Point Lillias to Point Wilson. After dark was best, especially with fresh pilchards. Shaun Jennings trolled last Sat-
urday when he soon had a strike on his Rapala Taildancer, boating a 3kg snapper. Over the next two hours he caught another three fish of a similar size. Grant Peterson tried spinning at North Shore rocks where he caught any number of small pike on soft plastics. The bigger fish turned up just on dark, with Grant landing three around 1m. Queenscliff’s cut remained consistent for trevally. Bait worked okay but anglers using soft plastics had the best results, especially when fishing turtleback worms, curl-tail grubs and Swing Impact Grubs an hour either side of high or low tide. Gummy shark captures continued to improve, with many of the best reports coming from off St Leonards after dark. Cured eel has been a top bait
but fresh squid has also been effective. Land-based anglers seeking gummies should try Collendina Beach after dark. The high tides are best, while light onshore southerly winds also seem to improve the results. This weekend’s high tides should be ideal for chasing snapper either on soft plastics or by trolling. Try fishing the outer-harbour between Bird Rock and the quarries. Plenty of freshwater options are available but Lake Wendouree will probably be the best bet. Use mudeye if fishing bait, while lure and fly will work well late in the afternoon and into the evenings. Cats form threat to place in eight GEELONG Cricket Club went down to Prahran then Essendon in a disastrous Twenty20 double header at Warrnambool last Saturday. The Cats batsman failed to get the job done in both games. Set just 117 for victory against Prahran after Jake Reed (4/15) starred with the ball, Geelong was all-out for just 83. Geelong batted first against Essendon, making a bright start thanks to Khalid Sawas (42) and Hayden Butterworth (27). But they soaked up a lot of balls and the middleorder was unable to capitalise, with the Cats reaching a small total of 115. In reply, Essendon lost regular wickets but kept the scoreboard ticking over to record a three-wicket win. Tomorrow Geelong takes on Footscray Edgewater and Melbourne at the Albert Ground. The Cats must bounce back to keep their spot in the top eight intact. In Geelong Cricket Association, Lara brought Murgheboluc back down to earth with a thud in a crucial division one match. The Frogs had been in good form but Lara dismissed them for just 95, with only Michael Grozdanovski (30) and Susipsara Dehigaspitiya (22) showing resistance. Danny Hughes (4/40) and Brenden Miller (4/18) were the pick of the Cats’ bowlers. In reply, Andy Hughes (50 not-out) and Chris Bambury (40 not-out) ensured Lara gained firstinnings points. With the possibility of outright points, Lara will go for the kill tomorrow. Bell Post Hill looks to have the upper-hand in division two against Newcomb & District. Winning the toss and batting first, the Panthers started well as Tim Sells (20) and Keagan Barker (36) put on 58 for the first wicket. Ryan Mills (60) held the middle order together but at 6/128 before Ben Muir (27) and Anthony Foord (17) pushed the score to 215. For the Dinos, Clinton Ford (5/42) toiled for 24 overs, while speedster Richard Stanyon snared (2/59). Newcomb & District has it all to play for this weekend but will be hard-pressed to chase down 215. In division three, Lethbridge won the toss and asked Little River to bat first in a game of vast importance to the finals hopes of both sides. When Paul Stewart (six wickets) reduced the Redbacks to 3/27, their decision to bowl seemed sound. But from there it was all Little River, with Wade Archer (71) and Mitchell Gavin (70) combining for a 137-run stand. Michael Ebborn (25) kept the momentum going for his side to finish on 8/245. Lethbridge is unlikely to chase down that many runs, which might cause some reflection on the decision to bowl first.
