â– Opponents say Asian gateway is too Chinese...
Take it away A FINAL design for a long-awaited Springvale Asian Gateway has failed to defuse a community group’s criticism that it was “too Chinese in style. Last week Greater Dandenong Council acting chief executive Jody Bosman unveiled the design, which features three traditional Chinese characters and ‘Springvale’ written in English on the top panel. The estimated $600,000 Asian gateway will have a cross-beam, featuring ‘Welcome’ in four languages, with accompanying symbols, representing Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Australia.
It is unchanged from the design revealed by the Journal in August and criticised by South East Melbourne Vietnamese Associations Council for being “too Chinese. Mr Bosman last week said the council received tenders up until two weeks ago and was expecting the winning tenderer to be decided this month. He said the design could yet receive some “fine-tuning. In recent months, the council has met several times with Vietnamese and Cambodian groups as well as the project’s proponent Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA) to resolve the row.
The council presented several compromise options including the removal of Chinese characters from the gateway’s top panel. That option was endorsed by SEMVAC but opposed by SABA. Meanwhile SEMVAC rejected a proposal adding couplets of Chinese poetry to the gateway’s columns. The warring parties were last week surprised that the council had already put the project to tender. SABA spokesman Stan Chang said it had left it to the council to sort out the “politics embroiled around the design. He held out a hope that the gateway
would be built in time for Lunar New Year celebrations, which fall on Australia Day. SABA had committed $200,000 to the project. It rejected an overture from SEMVAC to “shoulder half of the $200,000 in return for an equal say in the design. “We’re not going to fight against something that doesn’t even make sense, Mr Chang said. SEMVAC spokesman Trung Doan said the mainly Chinese design didn’t reflect the suburb’s demographics: about 4000 residents speak Vietnamese at home, about 1000 speak Chinese. Of the 44 shops near the proposed

gateway, 16 were Vietnamese businesses and 15 Chinese, he said. “There’s no reason the Chinese should demand this design for an ‘Asian’ gateway. The state Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship has committed $175,000 to the project. A council spokeswoman said the council hadn’t yet decided on its funding commitment. Mr Chang said the gateway would become a landmark and a tourist attraction. “We would like it to give some impetus to further development in Springvale.

Lights of learning TWO Greater Dandenong schools are punching well above their weight - and are now teaching others around the country and the world. Dandenong North and Silverton primary schools were last week named among eight from across Australia in the Social Ventures Australia (SVA) Bright Spots Schools Connection. These Powerhouse Schools have risen above the “disadvantaged” label on their communities. They’ll receive financial, mentoring and networking support to build on their strengths, and help SVA create a plan to turn around struggling schools. SVA Bright Spots Schools Connection director Sue Cridge said the schools knew how to excite their students about learning. “These schools have something to teach all of us - we can all learn from them so that success in these ’bright spots’ can spread to become a bright system,” she said. Dandenong North principal Kevin McKay said the school’s inclusion justified its efforts. “You don’t get those results without a fantastic staff,” he said. “It’s great for them to see people outside of the school are recognising what they’re doing.” He said the key to the success was “hardly a revelation”. “We actually teach,” he said. Mr McKay said years ago teaching became geared toward kids learning for themselves. “It might be all right in affluent suburbs where the kids have lots of great experiences at home,” he said. “It doesn’t work for people who start school with no English language to begin with. It doesn’t work for people who’ve had disrupted learning or no learning at all.” He said teachers worked with students until they understood a concept, and the school used the additional funding it received for its “disadvantaged” location to employ extra staff. “That helps us to reduce the sizes
of our groups and get to the point of need more quickly,” he said. Mr McKay said it was all about giving kids from war-torn countries a better life. Silverton principal Tony Bryant said Microsoft picked the Noble Park North school among the 12 best in the world in 2009. “That was based around innovation, used of technology, performance, engagement,” he said. “We’ve mentored other schools around the world and we’re now a ‘world tour school’. “Thousands of visitors come to Silverton every year to see what we’re doing and try to replicate us.” Students have access to a TV studio, radio station, a laptop each and a planetarium and there’s a focus on team work through open, flexible working spaces. “We’ve got a fantastic school community that’s embraced what we’re doing,” he said. “We don’t want our kids to be disadvantaged for the rest of their lives. “We give them every opportunity to succeed.”

Man assaults boy in street AN 11-year-old has broken his arm while trying to escape from a man who grabbed him in Noble Park. Police said the boy was playing on his skateboard near Noble and Allan streets about 6.30pm on Tuesday 26 October when a man approached him and asked for money.

The boy said he didn’t have any and tried to ride away on his skateboard, but the man grabbed his arm. The victim suffered a fracture to his arm as a result. The suspect fled and was last seen running south down Alfred Street. He’s described as about 20 years old, tall and thin with
dark skin and short, black curly hair. He was wearing an old light black leather jacket and blue denim jeans with one knee torn, and was carrying a small bottle believed to be alcohol. An ambulance took the boy to hospital and he was discharged the following day.

Nativity scene set for season THE story of the birth of Christ has been told beautifully each year for the past decade at St Elizabeth’s Parish church in Dandenong North by a most impressive nativity display. Wilson Fernandez is the creative force behind the magnificent nativity. Wilson starts planning his creation six months before Christmas spending some 250 hours perfecting the scene, utilising 61 handcrafted models and 236 figurines. “The project commences at least six months in advance when I mind map what is to be created each year and I work towards logistics and project planning aspects,” said Wilson, who works as a quality assurance specialist with an engineering firm. His estimate of materials used
MY VOICE A MOMENT WITH
MARG STORK include 480 kilograms of sand, one square metre of natural rocks and stones, litres of environmentally friendly paint, 10 kilograms of exterior building materials, polystyrene sheets of varying sizes, two kilograms of screws, a 3.5 metres by 5.5 metre screen, and all forms of packaging materials. The scene displays a regular village life with villagers, traders, travellers, farmers and animals. The scenes are changed each week to reflect the Christmas story.
In week one, Wilson introduces the entry of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. Wilson Fernandez is of Indian origin and grew up in a small town on the south west coastal region south of Goa. He created his first nativity crib at the age of 14. To mark the 10th annivesary of the St Elizabeth nativity, the Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart celebrated a vigil mass at the church on Saturday night before blessing the nativity scene. The nativity is open for viewing until 12 January from 9am until 5pm. This is my last column for 2013. Have a Merry Christmas and I’ll be back with more Moments with Marg next year.

LOOKING BACK 100 YEARS AGO 16 December 1913 Sex and Salary Reprinted in the Journal from the BostonGlobe THERE are reported to be 185 male school teachers in the public schools of Boston and 1,342 females. The average salary of the men per month is $246.06 and the average salary for women per month is $70.69. To what extent the larger salary is a pure bonus to the male sex is an interesting question. Doubtless the fact that many of the higher salaried posts are held by men accounts for more or less of disparity, but it by no means accounts for all. So far as a man receives higher remuneration than a woman can secure for the same labor this excess is a

The move will allow calls from Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Berwick and Narre Warren to be answered faster and allow the Dandenong branch to concentrate on its immediate area. Both services will answer only emergency and urgent calls such as road accidents and other medical emergency with non-essential

With the support of her ALP colleagues, the 28-year-old Paperbark Ward councillor defeated Yvonne Herring 7-4 in a vote last Monday night. Cr Yesil was born in Australia to Turkish parents before the family returned to their home country. She is a union representative with the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, but her mayoralty will take a full-time focus. She planned to pay “special attention” to the revitalisation of Noble Park and advocate for improved public transport in Keysborough.

Plaza crime clean-up By CASEY NEILL POLICE are helping Dandenong Plaza traders, security staff and cleaners to cut crime. The shopping centre hosted a forum with guests from the Victoria Police Academy on 11 December. Sergeant Duncan Bartley said about 25 people attended the forum. “They had a spike in issues back in August with assaults so there’s been some ongoing dialogue with us and centre management,” he said. Following police advice, the centre implemented a youth guard and has since recorded a drop in incidents. “In November they had no assaults at all,” Sgt Bartley said. The youth guard speaks with
young people gathering at the plaza and listens to their issues. “He’s getting that information, what they want, what the issues are,” Sgt Bartley said. “He’s feeding that back through security and to us. “The kids are becoming more respectful of what their roles and responsibilities are.” The fluorescent vest-clad guard also moves on trouble makers. On 26 November police held another forum with centre security and cleaners. “They’ve never been incorporated into that before,” Sgt Bartley said. “They’ve got something to offer, if there is an incident. If they can intervene, take notes, report what’s happening.”
Sgt Bartley said the more intelligence witnesses could provide, the more scope police have to act and the better they could target resources. Regular forums are on the cards. “The probable next one is going to be on the mentally unwell, and how security and retailers can deal with that,” he said. “Low-level stuff should be dealt with internally. When there is a need for the police, we can respond knowing that they’ve done everything they can in the first instance.” Sgt Bartley said the police academy’s OPTIC program, which puts officers in training into shopping centres, would return to the plaza in the coming months.

Safety campaign puts jail sentence on hold
Reserving Shop until judgement the bell rings
By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS
A MAN ordered by a court to develop a road-safety campaign after nearly killing himself and four passengers in a drink-driving crash in Narre Warren South has been praised by his judge for doing a “pretty good job”. Cadmiel ‘Tibby’ Duscas of Noble Park had been challenged in October by Dandenong Magistrate Greg Connellan - in lieu of a lengthy jail term - to use social media and visit schools to spread a road safety message to young people. Duscas said that before reporting to Mr Connellan last Monday he had been worried that he had not done enough. “The fact I could get locked up lingers at the back of my mind,” Duscas told the Journal. “I’ll just keep going with it.” There were further nervous moments when Duscas missed a 10.40am callover in the court due to being bailed up by a TV crew outside. Mr Connellan noted Duscas had since appeared on a TV current affairs program, had featured in “quite constructive” reports in the Journal and set up a road-safety Facebook page Our Second Chance - Almost Fatality to Reality. Duscas is also planning to visit schools next year with some of the Facebook page’s 800 followers, including former road victims and people who “served time” for injuring or killing people on the road. He said he wanted his school visits to have a point of difference. He told the court he would raise funds for activities,

such as $500 vision goggles that could replicate impairment caused by a 0.10 blood-alcohol reading. “We don’t want to just go in and preach,” Duscas told the Journal. “We want to make it fun.” One of the potential campaign ‘recruits’ was an off-duty paramedic who revived Duscas at the crash at Pound Road early on 20 May 2012. A Casey Highway Patrol officer who attended the crash was also willing to join the education tour. “On the night, the crash looked so bad, he said to other police officers ‘be ready for five fatalities’,” Duscas told the Journal. Many of the campaign’s growing list of contacts, including his former school Noble Park Secondary College, were enlisted after reading the Journal’s reports. “It sounds like you’re doing
a pretty good job,” Mr Connellan said. “I’ve started,” Duscas replied. “The ball’s rolling.” In October, Mr Connellan had banned Duscas from driving for four years and deferred further sentencing. This includes a possible jail term of more than 10 years - for driving under the influence and negligently causing serious injury to his four passengers. Mr Connellan further deferred part of Duscas’s sentence in April, pending more information on Duscas’s school visits and Facebook campaign. “I sense by this stage Mr Duscas will have been doing something worthwhile,” he said. Duscas’s lawyer Michael Kuzilny said outside the court that Mr Connellan took a “holistic approach”. “Rather than just being punished, the young offender is giving back to the community,” he said.
No holds barred in legal stoush VU HO, the Springvale unemployed mechanic who is fighting to keep his pet sheep at home, has vowed to keep battling despite his case being closed by the High Court. On Friday, the court dismissed Mr Ho’s special leave application, which requested the highest court in the land to hear his case against Greater Dandenong Council. “Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose,” Mr Ho said when told the news. A defiant Mr Ho told the
Journal he would embark on a fresh legal challenge should the council try to forcibly evict his 16-year-old sheep Baa. “If they do try to remove her by force, they have to give me warning and then I will challenge them in court. “I will fight to the end. This is not the end.” Mr Ho claims the council corrected a flaw in its local laws in 2011 that had categorised sheep with cats and dogs. The basis for his new challenge would be that the correc-
tion could not apply retrospectively to Baa’s case. Mr Vo said he may declare bankruptcy, given he cannot afford to pay an estimated $200,000 legal bill for his failed Supreme Court challenge and subsequent appeal. In each of those hearings, the council was awarded legal costs against Mr Ho. Mr Ho said Baa was doing well after having an infected ear recently amputated. “She’s recovered and very healthy now.”

Connecting people and communities
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR No offence I FIND it somewhat strange that a recurring debate seems to happen each Christmas. There are some in the community who don’t like Christmas decorations, nativity scenes, and Christmas carols. They say it offends them. They are not Christians, and they don’t want to endure such things. Sometimes we are led to believe that people of other faiths are offended by our Christmas celebrations and traditions. I want to disagree with that last statement. What I have found over the years is that people of other faiths are not offended or concerned if we celebrate Christmas. The overwhelming majority of people who live here and who practice religions other than Christianity are quite happy for our culture to celebrate its traditional way. The people who tend to get upset, are more often some (not all) white Aussies with no religion, or who are a particular kind of atheist. (Not all atheists). Indeed, some angry non-religious folk, actually use people of other faiths to cloak their own hostility to religious traditions and celebrations. “Don’t you realise that a nativity scene offends Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and others!”

Forward looking AS A former resident of some 40 plus years in Springvale, I welcome the final elimination of the Springvale Road level crossing, which is long, long overdue. I remember back in the ’60s when Springvale Road was only a single road of two lanes through the shopping centre, times have changed. Why, oh why, though, isn’t the third railway track being built into this new underground station complex? We already have the third track from Springvale Road west up past Westall Station, where it was allowed for, and it just seems obvious to me that it should be built in as all the level crossings are gradually replaced. The third railway track between Caulfield and Dandenong will give all commuters a quicker option to get to and from their homes and places of employment, etc. We should always look forward! Not so. No Muslim, Jew, Buddhist or Hindu that I have met, have ever complained about nativity scenes. (I will allow for the possibility that there could be some – a tiny minority of extreme fundamentalists of any faith who say “I am right and everyone else is wrong!” and “only my religion should be allowed!”) As someone involved in multifaith and interfaith networks for the last seven years, all I have found is gracious people from all religions who are just happy to be living in a wonderful country that allows them the freedom to practise their own religion and to celebrate their own special events. They gratefully accept that gift, and they equally offer it to all others around them. They know, that if you begin restricting it for one, you end up restricting it for all. Let’s be careful about ridiculing the customs and traditions of celebrations like Christmas. Whether you are religious or not. We should be keen to demonstrate tolerance and respect for those who are not the same as ourselves. And let’s not blame “people of other faiths” getting offended. It is usually not them who are offended. It is usually a small sub-group of the nonreligious who want society to be just like them.

Out of the firing line Stray balls regularly clear a sixmetre-high perimeter fence intended to protect houses built 50 metres away from the synthetic pitch. Les and Suzi Harris, whose yard and roof have been in the firing-line since the 1970s, were hopeful the move would finally give them peace. “This news is a great Christmas present,” a relieved Ms Harris said. “At least now the council is doing something.” Since the ban last March, the couple had still collected eight balls that landed in their yard; a cricket ball landing metres from Mr Harris as he gardened.
By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS SENIOR cricket is set to return to Lois Twohig Reserve’s lower oval next season after Greater Dandenong council allocated $245,000 to move the oval’s pitch further from neighbouring houses. It is also considering a taller perimeter fence, at an estimated cost of $140,000, as a further defence for long-suffering neighbours. North Dandenong Cricket Club seniors had been banned from playing on the pitch this season after complaints by neighbours about their roofs and backyards being peppered by cricket balls.
He attributes seven of the astray balls to regular and illegal social cricket matches, and one to a junior club fixture. “As long as you hear a whack off the bat, you have to have a look about in case one lands near you.” Mr Harris said the expensive solution was as a result of a “planning failure” which allowed a cricket pitch and homes to be built so close. The couple had been long frustrated that the council had failed to act after in 2000 he produced 70 balls that landed in his yard. Dandenong Cricket Club committee member Colin Riddiford said the move was timely given the se-

nior cricket ban was threatening the club’s viability. He said the club had lost a team of players because it had been forced to move cricket from its home base to Lyndale Secondary College. “It’s effecting the club’s financially something shocking. We made a $5000 loss this season.” Some councillors quibbled with the cost of works and using an openspace reserve fund collected from developers’ contributions. The works include shifting the concrete-base pitch eight metres east, extending the oval’s eastern boundary and removing a disused road on the eastern side.

ST Mary’s Dandenong Conference of St Vincent de Paul volunteers are giving Santa a helping hand to ensure that underpriviledged children throughout the region have a present to open on Christmas morning. Twenty volunteers have been busy collecting toys, which will be distributed in the lead up to Christmas. Conference president Veronica Gislingham said toys for children 10 years and over were in particular demand. “The recent toy drive will make many relieved parents happy that their children will indeed have a great Christmas thanks to the kind donations,” Ms Gislingham said. “Christmas is a time for families to come and share a meal together and for the children to play. “Thanks to the toy drive, families have that little extra hand up to have this.” Volunteers also collect toys at surrounding parishes including St Gerard’s North Dandenong, Holy Family Doveton, St Joseph’s Springvale, St Anthony’s Noble Park, St Peter’s, Clayton, St Andrew’s Clayton South, St Paul the Apostle Endeavour Hills and St John Viannys.

Web nets Holden
Car petrol attack
A FEVERISH social media campaign has helped recover a distinctive customised Holden that was stolen from a central Dandenong car park. Owner Brett Baynham of Cranbourne North said the 1961 EK Holden was spotted in Windsor on Thursday, two days after vanishing from the Thomas Street multi-deck. A man recognised the vehicle from an Instragram post, one of many placed on social media by Mr Baynham’s extensive network of car enthusiast friends after the car’s theft. The post was linked to a Facebook page that had received 154,000 views, Mr Baynham said. “It got to the stage, probably, that the car got too hot to handle.” The beloved sedan with a “candy apple red” roof was a one-of-a-kind. It had been found with different number plates and covered with a sheet in a Windsor car park. By that evening, the car
AN ARSONIST poured petrol over a car parked in a Noble Park driveway and set it alight. About 12.15am on 7 December a passer-by saw the blaze on Latimer Street and called triple zero. The CFA attended, extinguished the fire and found a petrol can behind the burnt-out Honda sedan. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.
Driver left walking
The custom 1961 EK Holden stolen from Dandenong on Tuesday. was put on a trailer and secured in Mr Baynham’s garage. “It’s been thrashed around a bit. There’s a bit of a scratch, some tools missing but nothing that can’t be fixed or replaced.” Mr Baynham said a lot of car enthusiasts knew of the car, which has featured in many car shows since he bought it 12 years ago. Many of them have
spread word and pictures of the car on Twitter and Facebook since its theft. Celebrities and media have re-tweeted the messages, sparking tip-off sightings as far away as Canberra on Wednesday night. However many of the sightings are conflicting, perhaps confusing a “sort of similar” vehicle that Mr Baynham knows of in Victoria. He had spent $4500
customising his beloved machine. The car had been driven to work and parked in the same spot in Dandenong for the past seven years. But now the vehicle will be taken out for rare outings only. Ironically, Mr Baynham noticed security cameras were being installed in the Thomas Street car park on Friday - three days after the theft.
A DANDENONG driver will be without their car for 30 days after driving at 128km/h on Cheltenham Road. Police saw the car speeding through the Dandenong South 60km/h zone about 6pm on Tuesday 10 December. Officers intercepted the car, spoke to the 36-year-old driver and impounded the car for 30 days.
Car stolen from family at knifepoint TWO teens stole a car from a family of five at knifepoint in Dandenong earlier this month. A Dandenong man, 34, parked in Herbert Street about 4.30pm on 5 December. As he and his wife were taking their three children
out of the Holden Commodore station wagon, a boy approached them from behind, produced a knife and demanded the car’s keys. The armed thief got into the driver’s seat while a girl got into the passenger seat, and started reversing the vehicle as the victim was still
removing a child from a car seat. He performed a U-turn and turned right into James Street. Detectives from robbery taskforce Embona are investigating. They recovered the vehicle and have charged a Dandenong girl, 15, with armed

robbery. They interviewed and released a boy, 17, also from Dandenong, pending further inquiries. Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.
POLICE on the beat are wearing a new hue. Greater Dandenong officers put on the new dark blue Victoria Police uniform last week. Superintendent Derek Lamb said the look was more professional and modern.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… DANDENONG Market’s Christmas decorations aren’t just festive they’re sustainable. The walls and stalls are decorated with resources from the market, and the market’s been taking part in recycling and energy and water conservation programs this year. THE dedicated staff and volunteers at Dandenong food charity Avocare are relying on “reindeer power” after their refrigerated van was involved in an accident last week. The 22-year-old van had been collecting food around the city for the past seven years. Last financial year Avocare distributed more than 771,000 kilograms of food, or about 19,730 meals each week, and it will provide lunch for 120 people at Cornerstone on Christmas Day. Anyone who can help with a new van is asked to email Trish Keilty at trish@jobsforce.com.au. DANDENONG’S George Andrews Reserve has been short-listed as a potential training camp for Australia’s biggest ever football tournament, the 2015 Asian Cup. The Greater Dandenong Council facility is among 27 venues in every state and territory vying to host one of Asia’s top 16 teams as they acclimatise and train in Australia. Participating teams will receive a brochure highlighting the venues for teams to consider as part of their preparations.
CHRISTMAS decorations can never be too Christmassy for some. A Journal reader said he wouldn’t be happy until there were banners reading “Jesus is the reason for the season”. City of Greater Dandenong announced it would replace ‘Seasons Greetings’ with ’Merry Christmas’ on its festive paraphernalia next year, following criticism of its efforts this year. A COUNCILLOR’S tea break put a Greater Dandenong council meeting into mild disarray last Monday. With four councillors already absent at the time, Cr Peter Brown left the chamber for a cuppa. Soon after, the meeting’s public question time was called to an abrupt halt because of the lack of a quorum. After five minutes of discontent rumbling from the public gallery, Cr Brown reappeared with a warm brew in hand, seemingly nonplussed by the commotion. THE Springvale council chambers’ final ever meeting was a bit of a snooze fest - for one member of the gallery, at least. They had to be stirred awake at the two-hour mark last Monday, despite the occasion. Past councillors from the former cities of Springvale and Dandenong flocked to a dinner ahead of the momentous meeting, with the council to move to its new digs in Dandenong early next year.

Shirley Boden, 82, has been with the club since it started 33 years ago. “I joined the very first night that it was being formed and I’ve been going ever since,” she said. “I’m the only one in the garden club that has been there all that time. “I’ve done just about everything there - I’ve been the secretary, the treasurer, the president ... “Now I’m on the trading desk. People bring in plants, we sell them on the trading table. They get 80 per cent of what we charge, and the club gets 20 per cent.” The club had a surprise for her at its Christmas lunch on 7 December - a Gold John Pascoe Fawkner Medal for distinguished service to horticulture. The Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria president and secretary were on-hand at Sandown Park Hotel to make the presentation. “It was a huge surprise,” Ms Boden said. “I never expected anything like that. “You do these things not for what you’re going to get back, but because you enjoy it. “I just felt I was just doing what everybody does in these clubs. “I didn’t know what to say. I just stood there like a fool.” Ms Boden has always been interested in gardening. “I did a course in landscaping and gardening before I joined the garden club,” she said. And her sons and daughter have followed her passion, gaining qualifications in landscaping and horticulture. “It’s such a relaxing thing, gardening,” she said.

Shirley Boden has always loved gardening. 112031 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “If you’ve got any problems it takes your mind off them.” Ms Boden moved to a more manageable home in Mornington about 18 months ago to be closer to her son, after 55 years in Springvale. “I must admit I feel very comfortable when I go back to Springvale,” she said. And she regularly makes the journey to her former home.

“I drive up on garden club night, which is the third Wednesday in the month,” she said. She helps to set up for the events, which feature speakers from nurseries and other experts. The club also holds regular bus trips, and welcomes new members. Call secretary Cheryl Johnson on 9551 3197 for more information.

The City of Greater Dandenong’s Economic Development Unit ran the contest across the municipality over the past month.

Festival is set to show way DANDENONG Market will host the area’s first Children’s Sustainability Festival next March. The Greater Dandenong event is touted as a fun day where the community and council staff will embrace and celebrate environmental sustainability together. It’s designed to build on existing council activities and programs to improve community understanding of environmental sustainability, and show them what they can do to reduce their environmental footprint. On Sunday 30 March there’ll be fun activities, displays, demonstrations and programs engaging, entertaining, educating, plus experts and roving performers. Councillor Matthew Kirwan pushed for the event and said it was exciting to see it come to fruition. “It’s a family event for residents who want to reduce their impact on the environment and reduce their energy bills to learn how to do it not by having to go to an inner city event but having an opportunity in their own backyard,” he said.

Drunk arsonists POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a deliberately-lit grass fire in Keysborough. A cyclist was riding east on the bicycle path on the north side of the Dandenong Bypass, about 300 metres east of Perry Road, about 10.20am on 7 December.
He told police he saw smoke in the distance and two men “staggering” east along the path - both described as Caucasian, aged in their twenties and apparently intoxicated, one with a thin build and the other a large build.
The witness then came across a small scrub fire and called Triple-zero. Police and CFA crews attended and extinguished the blaze, restricting its size to about one square metre. Greater Dandenong CIU Acting Detective Sergeant
Luke Kirton said the incident was an important reminder for people to vigilant during summer and immediately report fires. He urged anyone with information on this blaze to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A family festival at the market.

Students are polished performers DANDENONG High School students polished up their employment skills recently. Year 10s, spread across five one-day workshops at the Comfort Inn in Dandenong, learnt about issues relating to the world of
work through the Beacon Foundation’s Polish program. Representatives from the not-for-profit provided information about work ethic, deportment, grooming, employers’ expecta-
tions, interviews, manners and etiquette. The students also took part in a sit-down lunch with people from local businesses, to test out their new communication and dining skills and make
valuable contacts. They walked away with better communication skills, increased confidence and self-respect and a better understanding of employers’ expectations.
THE Christmas Farmers’ Market will again feature a family festival at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. The whole family can enjoy the wonderful park surroundings as the venue prepares for and celebrates the festive season. The Rotary Club of Berwick and Father Christmas will welcome parents and their children to the twilight market. Organisers say they want to reward their customers who have made the market a greater success this year. Customers will enjoy two gifts - the outstanding quality of farmers’ products and a range of treats for their children. The children’s activities will include face painting, a jumping castle, playground fun, bubble generators, lollies, balloons and other goodies. Customers can enjoy a coffee or brunch while the youngsters safely burn energy in the jumping castle. There are more than 50 stallholders who will offer fresh farm products. The vegetable selection ranges across the alphabet - from asparagus and beans, through to zucchini. There will be delicious seasonal fruits - from apples and cherries to raspberries and strawberries. Rotary Club of Berwick Farmers Twilight Market is at The Old Cheese Factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick, on Monday 23 December from 4pm to 8pm. Parking is free. Inquiries to Joe Collins at jco33418@bigpond.net.au.
This offer is not to be missed and will end 5pm December 31 2013.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Holden impact minimal By CASEY NEILL HOLDEN’S impeding closure is a terrible decision for Australia, but the impact on Greater Dandenong will be minimal. This was the word from South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden last week, following the announcement from General Motors (GM) that it would discontinue Holden vehicle and engine manufacturing in Australia by the end of 2017. “The impact on us in the south-east is relatively low compared with other areas,” Mr Boden said. “We’ve been moving companies to
move away from it. A lot of them already have.” He said many automotive industryreliant manufacturers in Greater Dandenong had made moves away from the sector following Ford’s announcement in May that it would stop manufacturing in Australia from 2016. “Certainly we’ve been giving them the message ‘you have to add to the capabilities in your marketplace’,” he said. Mr Boden said some had 20 to 25 per cent of their business tied up in automotive manufacturing, but had three years to adapt. “No one was going to trust that the
industry would be safe after the Ford announcement, plus changes in government,” he said. “For our region, the message is not doom and gloom. “It’s a blow for Australia, but much more it’s a blow for our technology capabilities going forward.” In May, Mr Boden said Ford’s closure could actually provide growth opportunities for manufacturers in the south-east. Ford said the closures would leave 1200 people without jobs, and Mr Boden said SEMMA members could work with Ford to take on some of the skilled employees.
“They train their people well. They’ve got good quality skills,” he said. “We’ve got members who are growing.” But he said reasons for the automotive closures needed to be addressed. “Trade agreements that we have need to be look at and reassessed,” he said. “Inherent barriers in our ability to export to Thailand, Japan... there needs to be a review of how balanced those agreements are. “It’s our natural market in terms of distance.” GM chairman and CEO Dan Aker-
Brokers to make work link DANDENONG is now home to a pilot program to help disadvantaged people gain and keep employment. South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich said the two-year Work and Learning Broker initiative would investigate and develop strategies to link disadvantaged people - in particular, public housing tenants - to local education, training and employment. “Unemployment has a significant impact on a person’s economic wellbeing, now and into the future,” she said.
“It also affects their social participation, often depriving them of a sense of belonging to the wider community.” Housing Minister Wendy Lovell said the rate of unemployment for people living in social housing was about three times greater than people in the private market. “That’s why we are targeting this area in partnership with Mission Australia,” Ms Lovell said. “Work and Learning brokers will support 50 people into jobs in Dandenong by working in-
tensively with local people and employers.” Ms Lovell said job support services often ceased once a client had been placed in a job, but the Work and Learning brokers would offer post-employment support to help people retain employment. “They bridge the gaps between education, training and employment and continue to work with their client to tackle any issues that may arise,” she said.
son said the decision to end manufacturing in Australia reflected the perfect storm of negative influences the country’s automotive industry faced. “Including the sustained strength of the Australian dollar, high cost of production, small domestic market and arguably the most competitive and fragmented auto market in the world,” he said. “As a result of the company’s actions, approximately 2900 positions will be impacted over the next four years.” A national sales company, a national parts distribution centre and a global design studio will remain in Australian post-2017.

Collection for heartfelt cause A SPRINGVALE worker has spearheaded a Christmas collection for a cause that is close to her heart. Windermere ambassador and former Richmond footballer Matthew Richardson was on hand to collect gifts from Harvey Norman Springvale last week for Windermere’s Merry Mission appeal. Store employee Rhiannon grew up with domestic violence. She and her family turned to Windermere many years ago,
on the brink of homelessness. Rhiannon became a young mum, but with support has turned her life around. “I know what it’s like to go without and I promised myself that my children wouldn’t, no kids should,” she said. So she turned to boss Darren Harrison. “Thousands of people struggle at Christmas time. Sometimes it’s the people you least expect,” he said. Within 48 hours Rhiannon
was inundated with gifts from colleagues, suppliers and stores within the Springvale Homemaker Centre. Merry Mission will help ease the stress for many local families and children by providing a quality Christmas gift for each Windermere child client and food and personal care hampers for family clients. Call Windermere on 9705 3200 or email info@windermere.org.au for more information about the Merry Mission appeal.

Rangers extinguish big Flames By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG got the job done for one of their favourites on Saturday - overcoming a resilient Sydney Uni Flames to smash out a 100-85 win. Making sure the lasting memories would be positive for Jenna O’Hea in her milestone 200th WNBL match, the Rangers had to fight back from deficit to snuff out the Flames. Lighting it up for the ABC cameras, Dandenong and Sydney Uni were hitting everything en route to one of the higher aggregate scores for a match this season. Foul trouble and suspect refereeing plagued both teams and left Alice Kunek, Kayla Pedersen and O’Hea circling foul-outs. This left Leilani Mitchell to steal the show as she racked up 27 points, nine assists, three steals and four rebounds in her best game for the franchise.
Mitchell to Pedersen continued to be an effective strategy in the post for Dandenong - with Mitchell targeting the Rangers’ centre for a number of assists to set up bucket after bucket. Dragging the Rangers back into the match, Mitchell’s third-quarter was sensational - hitting her shots, drawing fouls and causing a number of steals. The Flames stayed in the fight with the long range game as Alicia Poto (17 points) drilled fivethree pointers including three in a hot-streak in the third term. The Rangers managed to jump Sydney in the final term to build up a solid lead and take a comfortable 15-point win in the end. Dropping shots as she’s done all season, O’Hea (18 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists) pulled up just short of a well-deserved triple-double while Pedersen (19 points, 9 rebounds) and Kunek (17

Dandenong’s Aimie Clydesdale fights for the ball against Sydney Uni’s Alicia Poto. 112299 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS points, 6 rebounds) tip-toed around foul trouble to post some impressive numbers. Dandenong’s defensive pressure in the second half better resembled a side with championship ambitions - with Natalie Novosel (11 points, 4 steals, 3 assists, 6 rebounds) featuring heavily in the defensive pressure. Rangers coach Mark Wright said while the score was up for the Flames he was happy with the defensive efforts of his charges. It’s no good looking up at the score after the game and seeing 85 for the opposition scoreline, but it’s nice looking to the other side and seeing 100,” Wright said. “I’ve always said we play an exciting brand of basketball that the crowd and our fans enjoy and it becomes a shootout but we were playing ‘D’ and we did hold them to 39 per cent, so defensively we did ok.”
Promising numbers for the Rangers including a 9-2 advantage in steals and a 25-16 assist count and Wright believed the positives defensively set up Dandenong’s best results offensively. “Sometimes you have to take some chances defensively to create opportunities for yourself and I though they shot it well,” Wright said. “I thought Poto shot it beautifully and you take a chance when you play a zone about who is going to hit shots and who is not. “I think in the end we got our personnel right - who we closed out hard on and who we stayed short on and I think we got that right towards the end.” The win gives Dandenong a 10-3 season to secure second place heading into a top-of-theladder showdown with Bendigo on Friday night away to finish the 2013 half of the season.
Young player get together

So... a freestyler Players from the Young Cricketers and Villanova College squared off on Friday at Coomoora Reserve. 112307 Picture: SUPPLIED THE Young Cricketer’s Development Program played host to a visiting school cricket team from Villanova College, Queensland on Friday. The Young Cricketers team was comprised of a squad of 15 boys from various DDCA clubs from which the DDCA Under-16’s Jim Beitzel squad will be selected, while the visiting Queensland team hailed from Villanova College - currently in Melbourne to compete in the Oblate Cricket Carnival held at Mazenod College. The DDCA boys opted to bat first at Coomoora, reaching a score of 5/120 in their allotted 40 overs, with Z. Sheik
top-scoring with 22 for the home side. In reply, the visiting Queenslanders reached the target score in relative ease, registering a score of 167 for five with B. Hopan top-scoring with 45. For the home team, their best bowler was T. Pandithrathne who claimed commendable figures of two for three, whilst for the visitors it was D. Valetic leading the way with three for 26. The game was organised by the Young Cricketers team of Peter Mathison, Vernon Tissera and Johann Jayasinha in conjunction with Vilanova coach Craig Stariha. Adrian Jones, the
South Eastern Regional Manager and St Kilda coach was also in attendance. The Young Cricketers will head over to Malaysia this April for the fourth occasion to defend their Twenty20 title. The tour will take place during the April school holidays. The Young Cricketers are also looking to take their first ever Boy’s and Girl’s Under-23s tour to Sri Lanka and Malaysia during the July 2014 holidays. Anyone interested in either tour, should get in contact with either Peter Mathison on 0437 981 782 or Vernon Tissera on 0403 298 626.
AS far as Tommy So knows, he’s the only freestyle footballer in Greater Dandenong. The Keysborough ‘juggler’ has trod a lonely path, teaching himself freestyle football’s sit-downs, air, ground and upper-body moves from YouTube videos as a teenager. “Personally as a child, my parents couldn’t afford for me to play soccer with a club. I just played socially with my friends at school.” Now 20, Mr So is among the sport’s top echelon in Oceania, reaching the semi’s in a recent championship. His speciality is lying prone and juggling a football with the soles of his feet. Working as a network relations manager with Oceania Freestyle
Football Federation, he’s hoping to bring the niche sport into schools. “The kids love the sport when they see it. It’s a steep learning curve - you get the basics and then it’s pretty easy from there to pick up the tricks.” Sport can also be the carrier of social change. Mr So has learnt from experience how prohibitively expensive organised sport can be. His ultimate ambition is to help disadvantaged students pursue their sporting dreams along with developing back-up skills outside of sport such as public speaking. “My message for others is if you choose to follow your dreams, you have to have a back-up if it fails.” In other words, you’ve got to be good at keeping the ball in the air.

A Clay-ton revives North Dandy
Clayton McCartney and Dean Gunawardana both smashed centuries for North Dandenong on a horror day in the field for Narre Warren. 112306 Pictures: JARROD POTTER
By JARROD POTTER IT WAS double the delight for North Dandenong on Saturday, with Dean Gunawardana and Clayton McCartney rescuing the innings to post a pair of centuries.
NORTH DANDENONG v NARRE WARREN From bad to beautiful, the revival of North Dandenong’s (292) innings was spearheaded by twin centuries from the middle order against Narre Warren. Norths’ old batting woes had surfaced with the top order completely crumbling against Kaushalya Weerarante (4/90) and Pramod Liyanagamage (3/81). From 4/27 to 5/66, it was panic stations as Gunawardana and McCartney were brought together. Earning his first Turf 1 call up for the season, McCartney made it count, buckling down with Gunawardana to see off the Magpies and counterattack in style. The Gunawardana/McCartney partnership reaped 154 runs - the new sixth-wicket top partnership for Turf 1 this season. Narre Warren was slipping by then, pushing everyone to the rope and allowing the easy singles as Gunawardana raised his bat, soon to be followed by McCartney for a half-century of his own. Gunawardana fell soon after, leaving McCartney and the tail to see what they could achieve with 11 overs and free reign to hit.
Walking off as a centurion, North Dandenong’s Clayton McCartney celebrated a gutsy 102 not out. 112306 Jurgen Andersen (28) was first up - belting one of the bigger sixes hit at Lois Twohig Reserve striking from the clubhouse end and smashing it into the trees on the hill at the primary school end. Andersen and McCartney accrued a rapid-fire 64 as McCartney drew in on a century of his own. McCartney went for it with boundaries - smashing 12 fours and two sixes - most of which came after his 50 as the former TAC Cup footballer made his talents known in his other sport of passion. A few hairy moments and a couple of thick edges played in McCartney’s favour as he scurried through for his maiden DDCA Turf 1 century. It leaves Narre Warren with a ton of work to do on Saturday - chasing 293 for first innings points.
the job done against Hallam Kalora Park, with Antonio Greenidge (62), Dan Haasbroek (28) and Suren Ekanayake (43) doing the heavy lifting. It started poorly for the Ridges as Paul Rudd (1) and Jayson Hobbs (1) came and went without much resistance, leaving the job to Greenidge and company. The final efforts came from the tail as Richard Hope (26no) and Wes Nicholas (15no) added a bit more to the final chase.
MORDIALLOC v SPRINGVALE SOUTH
Dale Tormey’s smashing start to life in Turf 1 continued with a blistering 109 for Lyndale (7/276) against Parkfield. Tormey has 260 runs and 13 wickets before the summer break and will be a name to put up for Wookey Medal consideration. With Rory Ingram (52), Ciaron Connolly (31) and Tharanga Lakshita (47) in tow, Tormey was able to demoralise Parkfield with his second century of the season. Steve Spoljaric (2/37) was economical from his 18 overs while Samiddha Gallage (2/106) had to toil for his pair.
The difference between the Mordialloc (124) commoners and the King, Nathan King (6/36) was startling as the spearhead ran through the Bloodhounds’ batting order. Yoshan Kumara (3/46) opened strongly, claiming Tim Richardson (0) for a quacker before also chipping in to snare Chathura Athukorala (10) later in the innings. The King emerged from there to continue a redhot finish to the first-half of the season. King removed the big two - Stuart Squires (37) and Leon Kennedy (20) to leave Mordialloc on the ropes before a late order run-through left the home-side defending a scant amount. In reply Steve Masterson (19) was the best of the Bloods as Aaron Morrison and Dylan Quirk fell to Athukorala (2/30).

the board against Heinz Southern Districts (1/10), but the Kangaroos will rue its wasted opportunities. Starts were not cashed in as Jason Bacic (38), Lance Baptist (10), Paul Hill (13) and Rob Johnston (16) failed to carry on for a big score. Joel Robertson (33no) held together the attack at the death as Michael Davies (4/30) and Matt Cox (3/39) were the main wicket-takers for the Cobras. Coomoora got one back before stumps with Oliver Ashford (1/4) snaring the top order scalp of Keith Perumal (3).
BERWICK v DANDENONG WEST Walid Ghauri (70) finished his batting year in style as Dandenong West (213) set a task for Berwick and its star-recruit Thilan Samaraweera to chase. Ghauri weathered the initial storm as Turf 1 debutant Alexander Cross (1/26) rattled Justin Stanton from the crease with his second ball of the day. Ghauri and Matt Fielding (42) added an 84-run partnership before Ghauri fell to Nirmal Wickramaratne (2/43). Gehan Perera (28) was the other Bull to impress with the bat as Ryan Crawford (3/30) and Jarrod Goodes (2/46) helped run through the lower order. Samaraweera (1/5) claimed his first wicket as he dismissed Perera with the help of Goodes in the slips. Tanner Stanton (18no) and Andrew Taylor (9no) batted out to stumps, leaving Berwick with 186 runs to attain.

By JARROD POTTER THE Lions’ roared to a VWCA Twenty20 win at home on Saturday via the dab hands of Sarah Elliott and Kelly Applebee. In their clash with Essendon Maribyrnong Park (EMP), Dandenong didn’t get off to the strongest start - with Erica Kershaw (4) chopping on at 1/18. It brought together captain Applebee and Elliott, leaving the
Victorian representative pair to go about business as usual. Going at run-a-ball throughout the middle overs, the pair rotated the strike and soaked up the environment - playing out of their crease, flaying cuts and pulls square of the wicket. The most audacious shot belonged to Elliott - hitting a rampshot to register the 50-run partnership between the top order Lions. Elliott would fall chasing last-
ditch runs - attempting an overly ambitious second single to get herself run out on 46. Applebee (40no) and Laura Croft (8) would knocked the final runs in the ledger and set a challenging 3/106 to chase. EMP’s chase got off to a bad start as run-outs and poor decision making had the innings at a stand-still. Stabilising the innings was Emily McIntyre (44) - bludgeoning the innings of the day as she flayed five
boundaries around Greaves Reserve. Eventually some nimble work from Chelsea Moscript would have McIntyre run-out, leaving too much for the tail to achieve as EMP finished 7/91 from its 20 overs. Julie Hunter (1/7), Alana King (1/10) and Moscript (1/17) were the best of the bowlers. In the Lions seconds, Twenty20, Dandenong could only muster 4/71 before EMP chased it down with four balls to spare.
MOUNT Waverley was on the ropes, but Noble Park couldn’t inflict the deciding blow early - letting the visitors’ tail wag to reach 154. Rizan Mawzoon (6/45) was bowling grenades - his first-up spell was unplayable by the Mount Waverley top-order as Andrew Verstoep (9), Alex Deuchar (1), Chanaka Sampath (6) and Dhugal Bedingfield (3) fell to the seamer’s wrath. The home side was soon 5/76 as Marasinghe Perera (2/35) got invited to the wicket-taking party, leaving a large hole for the home team to escape. The must-get man was Myles Harry (63no), showing the backbone the rest of the top order could not muster to protect his wicket and help push the tail along. Harry received his best help from number nine Adam Ternes (26) and the pair roused a 42-run partnership to bring the total towards a defendable one, and far away from ridicule. Not content with a small bag, Mawzoon returned to reap more carnage - finding Ternes edging at 8/147 before Mevan Fernando (1/8) claimed the next wicket on the cheap. The final curtain call belonged to Mawzoon as he claimed the last wicket in an impressive six-wicket haul - his fifth five-orbetter wicket innings this season. Cashing in on the hard yards of Mawzoon, the Noble Park openers put most of the deficit away with Dean Edmunds (28), Ben Edmunds (36no) and Perera (14no) knocking off half the required runs. The match resumes on Saturday at Mt Waverley Reserve.

Panthers taste Bloods By JARROD POTTER
It’s all Good Dees for Britton By Michael Floyd JEFF Britton claimed the training honours in Thursday evenings Macro Meats Laurels heats, landing a winning treble and qualifying five-runners for this Thursday night’s semi-finals. Midnight Scandal, Cosmic Wise and Watta Good Dee each claimed the $6260 first prize for winning their respective heats, and will be joined by kennelmates Wise Peejay and Mepunga Tiara in the next round. “It was a good night, it’s nice to have a bit of luck,” said a modest Britton. The fastest of Britton’s winners was Whatta Good Dee, leading all of the way to win in 29.58 seconds. It was just the second win in Whatta Good Dee’s last 10 starts and her first in four attempts at Sandown Park. “She wasn’t starting very well so we tried a few different things. She was switched on tonight and got away well and she’s much better out in front. “It was also the first time I’ve handled her myself so maybe that was it!” Of the three heat winners, Britton was most confident in Cosmic Wise before the meeting. “I really like her but she needs to draw an inside box. I was reluc-
tant to tip her because I thought she’d be much shorter especially after she was tipped in most of the form guides.” Cosmic Wise paid $4.30 for her 2.75 length win in 29.60, while Midnight Scandal took out the night’s opening heat in 30.11. Joining Britton’s quintet in the semi-finals will be TAB Melbourne Cup runner-up Dyna Beth after leading all of the way to win her heat by six lengths in 29.55 seconds. The 10th win of Dyna Beth’s career taking her prize money beyond $150,000 - a remarkable figure for a greyhound that only turned two in October. Punters had to wait until the last heat of the night before the Tam’s Wish recorded the fastest heat win, running 29.49 on the way to a 3.5 length win for Mick Chilcott. Other winners included Steel Show (29.62) for Malcolm Hirtzel, and Liara Allen (29.52) for Steven Collins. The Macro Meats Laurels is Victoria’s richest race for agerestricted females with many contenders going onto success both on the track and in the breeding barn. Four semi-finals will be run Thursday night with the winner and each runner-up progressing to the $72,500 Group 2 final to be run on Boxing Day.

SOUTH East showdown belonged to Dandenong in a nail-biter against Casey-South Melbourne at Princes Park. Dandenong won the toss and went to work with the bat as Andrew Gale (31no) and Brett Forsyth (19no) had the prime vantage point to see Tom Donnell destroy the Bloods. Donnell brutalised anything that came near his bat - with the Dandenong opener pillaging 111 not out from only 77 balls. His smack fest included 11 boundaries and six sixes to leave Casey-South Melbourne scratching their heads about how to defeat him. Donnell and Gale posted 90 for the first wicket before the Yorkshire captain was dismissed by Nathan Frietag (1/34). Forsyth jumped into position and made his time at the crease count - hitting a run-a-ball 19 with a boundary and a six. Dandenong flew to 1/169 from its 20 overs, leaving Casey -South Melbourne a tough chase. Donnell (1/7) snared the early wicket of Shane Maggs (5) to cap off his day, before the rest of the bowlers. Current Tasmanian/Melbourne Stars allrounder Clive Rose returning to the club for the match, and the Bloods got off to a mediocre start as Maggs, Daniel Watson (9) and Lachie Sperling (1) fell quickly. Rose and captain Jolyon Leaver (61) steadied the chase before Nathan Lambden (2/24) snared Rose via a catch from Tom Donnell. Chris Hall (41no) was next up for Casey and the Hall/Leaver partnership accrued a quickfire 77-run partnership. The dangerous Leaver fell to James Nanopoulos (1/23), leaving Hall to bat out the innings while the rest of the order fell around him. In the Twenty20 earlier on Saturday, Dandenong was rightly smashed by Carlton. The Panthers finished 8/101 from its 20 overs with Mick Sweeney (21no) the best of a lacklustre batting card. Carlton chased the runs with ease - finishing the innings 3/102 with six overs remaining.
