AT 98 years of age, Mount Evelyn Returned Services League (RSL) member Ralph Groube Proctor sadly passed away last week. The well-known community figure, born on 20 February, 1915, passed away peacefully in Lilydale on Sunday 8 December. A keen member of the Mount Evelyn community, Mr Proctor built a life for his beloved wife Helen and their children in the town. Mr Proctor was on the Mount Evelyn Primary School Committee, planting many of the trees surrounding the school oval. He was also an active member of the Silvan Fruit Growers’ Association and the first man to serve on the Birmingham Road Kindergarten Committee. Mr Proctor also served on the Mount Evelyn Scout Committee, was a longtime member of the Mount Evelyn Progress Association and a lieutenant in the local Red Cross door knock appeal. In Mr Proctor’s autobiography, “Aim High - Proc’s Journey, he said that when the war broke out in Europe in 1939, he joined the Royal Australian Air Force and participated in World War II. “I watched a lot of my mates lose their lives, he said. “I was one of the fortunate ones to have survived. Mr Proctor relived his humble beginnings in Hay, New South Wales and moving to Monbulk in his teens to a live on a farming block with his family. “The last 90 years have not all been easy - there has been great joy and sorrow, he said. “I have always aimed high at everything I undertook - to do the best I could under each circumstance. “It is now up to each and every one of my children, all of whom I am extremely proud, to carry on the tradition of aiming high in their journeys through life. Mr Proctor was a 295 Squadron RAAF Veteran of D-Day and Arnhem Member of the Mount Evelyn RSL. President Roger Boness described

OLINDA police are calling on witnesses to a break-in at a local liquor store. Sergeant Paul Phillips said police believed that someone had jimmied the door open before stealing the til draw and an unknown amount of cash from the Olinda Cellars. “We have witnesses saying they saw two men hanging around the back of the building that night,” he said. If anyone else saw the pair, or has any information they are asked to call Olinda Police on 9751 1241.

Driver fined A CROYDON man has been caught driving while disqualified for a staggering fifth time. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Senior Constable Aiden Williams said the 26-year-old was caught driving along Poyner Avenue in Lilydale on Wednesday. The car the man was driving was impounded for 30 days and he was fined $813. It is believed the car was not his. The man is expected to face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court in January for four previous offences.

Drivers charged POLICE charged seven drink drivers and two drug drivers after a booze bus blitz on Friday night. The operation targeting drink and drug drivers, saturated the Yarra Ranges. It included two booze buses set up in Swansea Road, Mount Evelyn and satellite cars in surrounding areas like Healesville and Yarra Junction. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Senior Constable Aiden Williams said tests at the booze buses revealed two drug drivers, three drink drivers and one suspended driver. Satellite police cars conducted 830 Random Breath Tests (RBT) and 80 drug tests and found four drink drivers and 32 other offences, he said. “It’s always disappointing to see the message still isn’t getting through to some people,” Sen Cons Williams said. “People are still miscalculating how many drinks they can have before they drive. “But if you think you’re over the limit, you probably are.”

Home invasion POLICE are calling on witnesses to a home invasion in Chirnside Park. Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said four people were asleep in their Edward Road home on Thursday 11 December when they were woken around 1am by a man who punched and kicked them demanding money. It is believed three unknown offenders entered the home with one threatening the residents with a meat cleaver. All men wore black balaclavas covering their faces and left with only one mobile telephone. “One victim was taken to Maroondah Hospital with chest pain and some minor abrasions and soreness,” he said. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Detective Senior Constable Lisa Mitchell at the Lilydale Police Station on 9739 2300.

Suspected arson POLICE are investigating a suspicious fire that has left the Mooroolbark Junior Soccer Club without clubrooms. Detective Senior Constable Matt Gill said police believed that someone had broken into the clubrooms not long before 1am on Thursday 5 December before starting a fire. “The fire has taken hold and gotten into the roof,” Det Sen Cons Gill said. “It’s wrecked the clubrooms and left the junior club without clubrooms.” A club spokesman said the damage was believed to exceed $100,000. “At this point we’ve lost more than 150 balls, the uniforms, the goals and most of our sales merchandise all from smoke damage,” he said. “The kids are just shocked.” He said while it was disappointing, the fire wouldn’t stop the club starting back when the season resumes in March. “The only saving grace is that it’s happened in the off-season,” he said. Det Sen Con Gill said anyone witnessing suspicious activity near the clubrooms is urged to contact police on 9739 2300.

Saving Joshua By MELISSA MEEHAN HE’S only six years old, but he has a massive fight on his hands. And Joshua Schwarz’s parents say they will stop at nothing to fight the “naughty little bug” in his head. Just meeting him, you wouldn’t guess that he has been given only months to live. Joshua is fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer, coupled with a rare genetic disorder, making it almost impossible for doctors to treat him. He was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in March, but two weeks ago his parents received the news no parent should hear. “When he was first diagnosed in March, we thought it was a low-grade tumour that was treatable with radiation or chemotherapy,” mum Penne said. “But after a biopsy two weeks ago, we were called in and told it was an anaplastic astrocytoma grade three (AA3), which is an aggressive, fastmoving form of brain cancer.” After further tests, Penne and her husband Wolfgang, were told that Joshua also suffered from a rare genetic gene MSH6, which meant chemotherapy and radiation were not an option. “The MSH6 stops cells from regenerating, which means the usual forms of treatment won’t work for Joshy - it would just cause more damage,” Penne said. “And where the tumour sits, they can’t get to it - it’s in the area where language, understanding and movement are affected.

“So doctors won’t do it because there is a high risk of stroke, an inability to communicate, paralysis - it could basically turn him into a vegetative state.” Faced with so many roadblocks, Penne, Wolfgang and their daughter Jade hit the books, reading everything they could about AA3 and MSH6, in an effort to save Joshua. “Because of his age it is hard to treat him,” Wolfgang said. “But we’ve been in contact with hospitals in Germany and the United States. “There are different things being done to treat cancer in Europe and the US - like stem cells, gene therapy and immunotherapy.” The family plans to take Josh to Germany in an attempt to save him, or at the very least extend his life. But they need the support of others to raise money for the trip and pay for his treatment. The have set up a fundraising site <http://www.gofundme.

Penne said the family had already witnessed so many acts of kindness from those in the community. “His kinder has been amazing,” she said. “And so many other people want to support us in our journey. “Two weeks ago we had never heard of this type of cancer or the genetic disorder and with so much sadness, we’ve really seen the good in people.” A fund-raiser will be held this Thursday 19 December at Sooki Lounge in Belgrave, where local bands will perform in exchange for a donation. Friends have also organised a fund-raising day at the Upwey Anglican Church on Saturday 18 January from 12 noon to 4pm. Auctions, raffles, kid stall activities, jumping castles and face painting will all be there on the day to celebrate Joshua’s life.

Lining up for class By REBECCA BILLS NERVOUS 2014 Prep and Year 7 students gathered for their first day of orientation at Mount Evelyn Christian School last Tuesday. The nerves were quickly alleviated when the new students settled into their new school setting. Community relations officer Amanda Steele said it was a day designed to help students know what to expect a normal school day to be like in the New Year. As the new preps drew wonderful pictures, the new Year 7s were given the task to match the Middle School teachers to their baby photos. “They get to meet their teachers, meet the other students and find out which class they will be in next year,” Ms Steele said. “Orientation day also really helps the parents. “We run a coffee morning so parents can gather as well - some are sad their babies are starting school and others are excited.” Ms Steele said the school wanted orientation day to be a positive experience for both the student and the parents and for them to know they are in a safe environment. Review call on overlay risk homes By JESSE GRAHAM CHANGES to a controversial property law in the new year could see community concerns addressed and a common-sense approach taken with residential bushfire risk. Planning Minister Matthew Guy, in a letter to Seymour MP Cindy McLeish, said that change to the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) could be coming in 2014. In the letter, which was received on 10 December, Mr Guy stated that he recognised the BMO is “complex and needs to be simplified”, though a focus on community safety must be upheld. “The Bushfire Management Overlay should support community resilience to bushfire while being fair on landowners,” he wrote. “While maintaining a focus on community safety, I have

instructed the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure to prepare advice for my consideration which provides more flexibility for landowners, councils and government agencies.” Mr Guy said he expects to receive advice on the matter by the end of the year, with necessary changes to be made to the Victoria Planning Provisions as a result. The letter was written in response to a statement in Parliament by Ms McLeish on Tuesday 29 October, where Ms McLeish addressed the stress and complexity of dealing with the BMO and asked Mr Guy to visit the Yarra Ranges and Murrindindi Shires to assess the BMO’s results. The Mail has received a number of reports since the BMO’s induction in November 2011 from landowners unable to build on their properties due

to the overlay, effectively rendering the land worthless. Ms McLeish said that Deputy Speaker, Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe and Benalla MP Bill Sykes have also campaigned for change to the BMO. Ms McLeish told the Mail last week that the BMO, which comes from the recommendations of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, aims at making the community safe. “But there has to be flexibility and common sense,” she said. “You need a balance between community resilience and community protection.” She said that Mr Guy has met with a number of constituents on the matter of the BMO and that all the members involved would work towards a “common-sense” approach to bushfire risk.

Bushfire retreats listed By KATH GANNAWAY FOUR new Neighbourhood Safer Places (NSPs) have been designated by Yarra Ranges Council. Healesville RACV Club, Millgrove Recreation Reserve, Woori Yallock Reserve and Burrinja Gallery in Upwey were added to the shire’s current 11 NSPs at Yarra Ranges Council’s December 10 meeting; but not without discussion about whether they should be more correctly called Places of Last Resort. Cr Samantha Dunn said calling the designated buildings or areas Neighbourhood Safer Places sent the wrong message to the community. She welcomed Mayor Fiona McAllister’s move to have the matter, originally listed as a confidential item, discussed openly before the gallery. “I will not be happy until these are called ’Places of Last Resort’ - to call them Neighbourhood Safer Places is completely flawed,” Cr Dunn said. “They are not safe, and this gives a completely wrong message.” Cr Dunn said council should continue to push for the more accurate description, but said it was good to see another four places had been assessed as appropriate for designation. “I think residents will be pleased to see more across the shire, but there is no guarantee of survival,” she said.

Four Neighbourhood Safer Places have been named. “We do need to emphasise there are no guarantees.” Cr McAllister said the designation of NSPs was a critical issue for the Yarra Ranges communities and that there had been an incredible amount of work involved in getting to 15 places. The recommendation which was passed unanimously noted that the 11 current NSPs had passed the annual audit and so would remain designated for the coming fire danger period. The council is also required to provide signage and ensure the sites are maintained over the fire danger period. The report is to be made available to the public, minus any confidential information.

Grand shame

Inevitable invasion

I have recently had a very enjoyable week in Healesville and the Yarra Valley. It is over 30 years since I have visited your part of the world and I had fogotten how beautiful it is. Healesville is such a pretty town and I enjoyed re-exploring it very much. However I was horrified to see how neglected the Grand Hotel is looking. I remember it as one of the jewels of Healesviile. All the other historic hotels in the area look wonderful. I cannot understand how the Grand has not had the same care and maintenance. It really is very sad. I am sure most visitors to your town feel the same and no doubt the locals too. I hope next time I come to Healesville I will see a very diffferent Grand. Coming from Tasmania where we really appreciate our historic buildings I find it very hard to understand. Marlene Luthi, Kingston, Tasmania.

I comment on your article 26 November concerning the launching of a book called Paradise Lost, written by Mick Woiwood. I regret that on two occasions in the article the words “pre-invasion” were used. I think that most national-thinking people would judge the landing of Captain Cook on Australian shores could hardly be called an invasion in the real sense of the meaning of the word “invasion”. I only ask one question, accepting the inevitable, that some foreign country was going to lay claim to Australia, what country would journalist Jesse Graham, or anyone else who cares to reply, have chosen over England? I look forward to their replies. Ray Donkin, Healesville.

Sculptured standards I read with dismay the article Deadline Passes

For Sculpture House (Mail, 10 December). Bob Prudhoe’s iconic sculpture house is under threat from Yarra Ranges Council bullies. I have visited the sculpture house many times and like many others marvel at the unique creativity. By comparison I know of people in Healesville who have been living in an old quarry in makeshift buildings for 16 years during which time they have littered their bushland property with derelict cars and other rubbish, putting all their neighbours at risk. Why doesn’t the Yarra Ranges Council do something useful and clean up this property? As these people have been living in the old quarry for 16 years, Mr Prudhoe has plenty of time as the precedent has been set, one rule for everyone. Mr Prudhoe’s house should be heritage listed and the Yarra Ranges Council should stop bullying him. Peter Broman, Healesville.

quences of these wanton acts for the township of Warburton could run into lost tens of millions of dollars going into the future in lost wages and trade. If the people responsible for this act of vandalism are reading this I would ask them to think twice before they do it again because the jobs that might be lost in the future could be theirs, their friends’ or their families’. If anyone knows who has done this, I and many in the local community would ask that they tell the local police so the persons responsible can be held to account. Mr Crockett and the Edgewater Spa Development need to be supported and encouraged for the good of everyone in Warburton and these acts of vandalism cannot be allowed to be repeated or go un-checked or un-punished. Warburton simply has too much to lose as a community. Chris Thomas, Warburton.

Sanitarium graffiti makes me sick

Safe celebrations

IT IS devastating to read about and see the graffiti attack that has just taken place on the former Sanitarium Health Food factory and future Edgewater Spa development at Warburton (Mail, 10 December). This is an attack not only on the building itself but a direct attack on the future economic viability of the whole Warburton township and all of the people living here. With these constant attacks on this premises by vandals one could understand if the owner, Mr Gary Crockett, simply tossed his hands in the air and said: “This is just too hard, I give up, I will take my money somewhere else.” What happens then? Warburton needs this Edgewater Spa development to provide many badly needed employment opportunities for locals servicing both the future guests and the facility itself. The local business community badly needs this development to happen to help keep their businesses viable and also provide work for locals, maybe even some of these graffiti “artists”. This is not ‘street art’, it is wilful and malicious vandalism of another person’s property, as plain and simple as that and the conse-

AS Christmas approaches, it is important that we as a community ensure it is a time of celebration not devastation by driving responsibly on our roads. We know that alcohol will be a factor in many people’s festivities, just as we know that a quarter of all road fatalities involve drivers or riders who are above the legal alcohol limit. I urge you all to consider this fact before getting behind the wheel, or leave the driving to a designated driver if you know your night will involve alcohol. The TAC has developed Designated Driver Vouchers to help people make the right decision. If you want to help a loved one get home safely from their work break-up or Christmas barbecue or New Year’s celebration, gift them a voucher and pledge your services as a designated driver. It could be the best Christmas present you’ll ever give them. You can download the vouchers at www.tac. vic.gov.au or share them with friends from the TAC’s Facebook page. I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas let’s all drive safely into 2014. Janet Dore, Chief Executive Officer, Transport Accident Commission.

YARRA Ranges Council is a stand out state leader when it comes to emergency management, according to a top State Emergency Service (SES) risk auditor. Councillors last week endorsed updates to the Yarra Ranges Municipal Emergency Management Plan which was audited by VicSES in September. The council heard that the MEMP achieved a best-practice result, along with a perfect score when measured against the audit criteria.

The MEMP was developed in consultation with representatives of the Yarra Ranges MEMPC, council staff and the community with a working group involving SES, CFA, DHS, VicPolice and the council meeting regularly in preparation for the audit. SES Regional Emergency Management manager, John Chaplan, and regional officer Diana Ferguson reported on the audit and congratulated the council and members of the MEMP team. “I have done many audits and I have not seen anything of the calibre of this council repli-

Knot nannas’ charges undone

Fox control – Lake Eildon National Park, Big River State forest, Rubicon State forest, Cathedral Range State Park, Marysville State forest, Yarra Ranges National Park and Toolangi State forest

By JESSE GRAHAM

The Department of Environment and Primary Industries and Parks Victoria are committed to protecting and enhancing the natural values of parks, reserves and state forests across the state. Examples of this conservation management are the control of introduced plant and animal species which can impact on these values. As part of an ongoing strategy, the Department of Environment and Primary Industries will be laying buried baits containing sodium luroacetate (1080 poison) on public land for the control of foxes. Baiting will commence Monday 13th January 2014 and will continue until Friday 19th December 2014. Baits will be laid at strategic sites and other known areas of fox habitat within the above mentioned forests and parks, and within the vicinity of townships Eildon, Rubicon, Taggerty, Buxton, Marysville, Narbethong, Healesville, Warburton and Toolangi. 1080 poison signs will be posted throughout the baited areas and members of the public who are living, visiting or working in the above named areas are advised to take particular care not to disturb or interfere with bait stations. Domestic dogs and cats are particularly susceptible to 1080 poison and should be under efective control, muzzled or kept away from the poisoned areas. A COURT-date last week saw the final group of Knitting Nannas (and grandpas) walk free from court, with trespass charges set to be dropped. Five members of the Knitting Nannas of Toolangi (KNOT) appeared at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 12 December to hear the result of trespass charges against them, laid by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI). The session follows a hearing at the same court on Thursday 28 November, with three other members of the group over the same charges. The group of five at last week’s meet-

ing were met with the same results as the other group members and will have their charges withdrawn under a diversion program. As part of the diversion, each member of KNOT that appeared in court will have to pay a Landcare group $50, after which all charges would be dropped. The diversion was agreed to by both KNOT members and DEPI, and no charges will be listed on any members permanent records. The trespass charges initially relate to an incident on 19 September 2012 in which eight members of KNOT entered a logging coupe to protest against logging. The members stopped forestry work-

ers for about two hours and were told by police to leave immediately to avoid charges being laid - the members said they complied with the order. However, they still received a summons in September this year to front the court for trespass charges relating to the incident. A representative for KNOT said the group was relieved with the result of the hearing and said that the matter going before court had been a waste of taxpayer’s money. The representative said the hearings had brought a heavy emotional and financial cost against the group members and reiterated that KNOT were pleased the matter was resolved.

Skills share takes a break STUDENTS from Upper Yarra schools downed tools for a typical Ben’s Shed morning tea to mark the end of another successful hands-on woodworking program. Over the year students from Launching Place, Gladysdale, Wesburn and the Millwarra campuses at Millgrove and East Warburton have worked with Ben’s Shed volunteer teacher Albert Kleverkamp on projects including possum boxes, stools and ‘shoetakerofferers’. Wesburn principal Anne Stenhouse said the program was about developing relationships with the Ben’s Shed men and engaging with the community. She said the schools recognised what a major commitment it was for the

The Ben’s Shed graduation was especially fun for Wesburn student Jordyn, left who won the door prize – a new bike. Rain makes a patchy return NOVEMBER rainfall was again patchy across the Yarra Valley with Keith Thomas in Warburton recording a slightly better than average 129mm compared to 117mm last November. The year to date figures were 1112mm, compared to 1232mm, still 120mm short of the overall average. In Healesville, however, it was down with Alma Mitchell recording 71.2mm over 15 days compared with 52.0mm over 11 days last year. Hoddles Creek had the same number of wet days, but double the tally with Doug Armstrong recording 118mm compared with 64mm in November 2012 against an average November rainfall of 107mm. The year to date comparison is down overall with 1138mm compared to last year’s 1235mm.

Seasons Greetings May Christmas and 2014 bring joy, health, and prosperity to all. I urge you to look out for others and to take care on the roads this festive season.

Tasty drawcards By JESSE GRAHAM A PASSION for good food has helped to kick off a series of fine dining evenings, nestled just off Main Street, Healesville. Green Street Food is a pop-up restaurant created by Healesville residents Tim Campbell and Erik Koel that runs out of Mocha and Lime at 11 Green Street. The ephemeral restaurant has had three sittings since beginning in October, each filling to capacity with eager foodies keen to try the duo’s creations. Mr Campbell said that part of Green Street Food’s success could be its role as an event in the town, rather than a constant restaurant to visit. “It’s not something you can go to every night of the week or on a whim - it’s something people look forward to for a month,” he said. He said that both he and

Mr Koel are relatively new to the town and that he was overwhelmed with the Healesville community response to the pop-up restaurant idea. “People have been incredibly accommodating - we’ve received nothing but support,” he said. Mr Campbell said the menu features foods built from the ground up, taking on Mr Koel’s experience working at a Chef’s Hat-awarded restaurant in Melbourne. The menu features an entrée-andmain combination for $40, with the possibility of adding dessert for another $10. The next Green Street Food event is expected to be sometime in late January, but interested patrons are urged to follow the Facebook page at www. facebook.com/greenstreetfood. Places are limited to 40 people, with outside seating dependent on weather.

Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley with Seymour MP Cindy McLeish and Minister for Emergency Services Kim Wells at the fire refuge that is in a class of its own.

Place of last resort By KATH GANNAWAY THE fire refuge at Millwarra Primary School will provide a last resort option should fire threaten East Warburton. Residents had an opportunity to tour the refuge, set to be officially opened on Saturday 14 December, at an open day in November. The open day was part of a community education process by CFA, SES, Victoria Police and Yarra Ranges Council prior to the official opening. Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley and Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells were at the refuge

and said it was important that the community understood how it would operate, and when it should be used in bushfire survival planning. He reiterated the key message for residents living in bushfire areas, that a community fire refuge is a last resort that would only be opened when a fire is threatening. “Community fire refuges are being built to be operated by the community because there is no guarantee that the emergency services will be there,” he said. Mr Wells said leaving early on high fire danger days was always the safest option, with the refuge to be used by people in

the community who could not otherwise escape a fire. “They are a last resort bushfire survival option,” he said. The refuge includes heat shields, a standby power generator, fire protection systems and also a remote opening system. It has direct contact with the State Control Centre in Melbourne. Local residents who took advantage of the open day were also able to get advice on bushfire survival planning from CFA members. Community members are urged to make themselves familiar with location of the refuge and how it will operate.

Jazz twist to movies By REBECCA BILLS

Matthew Fagan will be bringing some Christmas cheer to Burrinja. 112163

String spectacular By REBECCA BILLS MATTHEW Fagan is bringing the festive cheer to Burrinja this Christmas in a special Guitar and Ukulele Spectacular with special guest JAKK. Featuring songs from the ’60s and ’70s, Led Zepplin, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Beatles, Neil Young and more this is Mr Fagan and JAKK’s debut duo performance together. “This is a bit different to my usual shows with JAKK as a special guest - I usually perform as a solo act,” Mr Fagan said. Known for his virtuosity and versatility on the guitar, Mr Fagan always surprises audience with his original arrangements and modern interpretation of a repertoire that spans many era’s and cultures. “I will be going back to my classical Spanish guitar to play some beautiful old English carols in the show,” Mr Fagan said. “Instrumentally, it really brings out the beauty of the music and on the 10-string, it creates magic.” “Throughout the show I use four instruments and it really is a journey of guitars from around the world.” Mr Fagan will impress you

with his spin on genres that travels across Spanish classical to Celtic, Flamenco, Latin American and other world music. “In my show, I do a special thing called guitar challenge where I ask for songs requested from the audience and I make it into a medley,” Mr Fagan said. “I want them to feel they are a part of the show as it’s not a sit back and listen concert.” Mr Fagan has previously toured with an impressive lineup of international acts including Natalie Cole, Billy Connolly, Shirley Bassey and Michael Crawford. “The 52 nights touring with Billy Connolly was the most valuable experience on how to be an entertainer,” he said. “He gave me one of his banjos as a present at the end of the tour to say thank-you and now in my concerts I like to talk about stories like that experience.” Matthew Fagan’s Pre-Christmas Guitar and Ukulele Spectacular with guest JAKK is on 20 December at Burrinja Café, 351 Glenford Road, Upwey at 6.30pm. Tickets are $20 and $15 for concession at the door. For more information, call 9754 5707.

A CHANCE to transport back in time to the heyday of silent movies accompanied by jazz band The Sound of Silent is being brought to Belgrave. The Cameo Theatre will be hosting the group in their outdoor cinema as they accompany the 1928 silent comedy Steamboat Bill Jnr starring icon Buster Keaton. The Sounds of Silent is a five-piece ensemble featuring some of Melbourne’s most versatile and accomplished musicians who recreate the silent movie experience from the ’20s and ’30s with fun, improvised performances. The group is dedicated to helping audiences rediscover the great movies of the time by recreating the cinema experience of days gone by. Musical director of The Sounds of Silent Martin Zakharov said Buster Keaton is one of the great figures of film history. “It’s amazing to see how enjoyable his work is nearly a century later,” he said. “We aim to give the audience a sense of the atmosphere that was experienced in the ’20s as the new technology of cinema swept the world. “We feature many well-known pieces from that era as well as drawing on more recent compositions - the music is performed with a line-up and style typical of that period.”

Members of The Sounds of Silent ensemble Roby Corelli, Martin Zakharov and Rod Wilson excited to play at the Cameo. 112161 Picture: REBECCA BILLS Mr Zakharov said the group has been performing in this capacity for nearly three years and said the challenge for them as performers was that they are not just playing a song, they are playing the song to fit to a particular scene. “When that scene changes, so do we,” he said. “I think the live music does add a dif-

Costa’s visit a big hit By JODIE SYMONDS ABC’S Gardening Australia host recently made a flowery visit to see his beloved fans in Mount Evelyn. The disability workers’ program at Garden Lovers Yarra View Nursery brought Costa Georgiadis to meet the people who idolise him. The nursery program enables 80 volunteer workers with disabilities to gain hands-on experience in the gardening industry. They all got the chance to meet their gardening guru. And Costa couldn’t help himself as he started helping to weed the garden as soon as he arrived at Yarra View Nursery. “For me, it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to understand a community and the work that they do for disabled

workers,” he said. “They’re doing the work and have been working extremely hard to work up those skills required to be in the workforce, which is just great.” Yarra View Nursery manager Bernie Sullivan said seeing the enjoyment on his staff’s faces when the saw Costa was priceless. “It’s really about the workers to have someone of that calibre in the same industry, doing the same work that they’re doing,” Mr Sullivan said. “But look at them, look how happy they are to meet him; they’re absolutely jumping out of their skins. “We have Costa’s DVDs and they’ve been used for educational purposes to teach about landscaping practices

ferent character to the experience. “It’s been fascinating to discover what a different experience it becomes to watch silent movies in a ‘live’ atmosphere.” The performance at the Cameo Outdoor Cinema will be completely acoustic using the original instruments that would have been used in the 1920s and ’30s. “Back then, silent movies weren’t actually silent, as cinema audiences were always able to enjoy live music that enriched their viewing of each movie,” Mr Zakharov said. “Steamboat Bill Jnr is a classic of cinema history, and definitely enjoyable for all age groups. “Keaton is one of the great writers and performers of the twentieth century, and a comedy spectacular like this isn’t quickly forgotten.” The Sounds of Silent are taking Buster Keaton and their show to the “Taste of Tasmania” festival in January but hope to be back at the Cameo for another show soon. The screening of the 1928 Steamboat Bill Jnr with live jazz from The Sounds of Silent is at the Cameo Outdoor Theatre, 1628 Burwood Highway, Belgrave, on Friday 20 December at 8.30pm. THE GIFT OF MOVIES

PETER and Marylin Siegman’s Christmas obsession has taken hold once again. The Emerald retirees have added even more to their already astonishing Christmas lights display and all they want is for other local residents to share in the joy they have for the festive season. Peter, now in his 70s, estimates that he has put in “at least 60 hours” of work into building and setting up the display in his Ulmer Road front yard. But he has been constantly battling the elements - particularly the rain. He aimed to have the lights switched on for the start of December fell a few days behind schedule. “You have to be careful of the rain - to make sure you get the controllers off the ground so the water can’t get in,” Peter said. “It’s the biggest issue we’ve faced.” But the display is back bigger than ever. The Siegmans aren’t asking for much - just for people to stop by and have a look, and maybe be inspired to create their own lights displays next year.

I began using LJ Hooker to manage my investment property in Healesville this year. A friend of mine who is a long-term renter and has had many previous agents referred them to me - she has been very happy in a house managed by them, so that’s why I got in touch. I had meeting with Dianne before signing up and she explained the processes very clearly. From my perspective it has gone very smoothly. Payment is prompt, the fees very reasonable, there is flexibility in the maintenance services you can use and correspondence is always timely and clear. There is also generosity in their transactions. Small acts like attaching stamps to envelopes to return items do not go unnoticed. Another plus is that LJ Hooker advises me of what I need to do and when to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible for any tenants. A regional partnership with the TAC and the Victorian Government.

Police dial up mobile crusade DANGEROUS drivers will remain in the crosshairs in the lead-up to the festive season, with distractions and seatbelt offences targeted in a new operation. Operation Break Up began on Monday 9 December, running until 23 December, and police officers have warned drivers to switch off and stay alert. Mobile phone use while driving, an offence that had its penalties recently raised to four demerit points and a $433 fine, will be one of the main dangerous driver behaviours targeted. Drivers not wearing seatbelts will also be punished, as Victoria Police continues its Summer Stay Road Enforcement Campaign to keep the road toll down. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said that members of the community can expect to see police at major shopping hubs and anywhere with a convergence of cars, pedestrians and cyclists. “We know this time of the year

can be really hectic and people have a lot of things on their minds,” he said. “But it’s also a time where we have a lot of our most valuable road users, both young and old, on the roads. “This makes it even more important to ensure all drivers remain vigilant and take extra care.” Assistant Commissioner Hill said that he made no apologies for tickets issued to drivers using their phones while driving or not wearing a seatbelt, or for pedestrians booked for not crossing roads properly. “That ticket may just be the reminder of the intervention needed to prevent someone being seriously injured or killed in a collision,” he said. TAC CEO Janet Dore said that drivers were three times more likely to be killed and 40 per cent more likely to receive serious injuries on regional roads than in Melbourne. As of Thursday 12 December, the Road Toll stands at 218, down from 268 at the same time last year.

Drivers are being urged to switch off their phones while driving as part of a Victoria Police operation targeting distractions.

Speed, booze, raise trauma stakes POLICE have been left disappointed after a state-wide operation saw numerous drivers taking risks and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol over the last month. Operation Remove All Impaired Drivers (RAID) was run from 15 November to 8 December, with an aim of targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Over the 24-day period, police state-wide recorded 1274 alcohol offences and 328 drug offences, with around 53 offences for alcohol and 13 offences for drugs issued each day, on average. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said he was

disappointed to see motorists displaying little regard for their safety and the safety of others on the road. “These drivers have no respect for other road users and should not be on the roads,” he said. “We know that impaired driving is a significant contributor to road trauma and we are continually pushing this message. “Yet we still have some drivers who are willing to put their lives and the lives of others at risk - it is just not good enough.” In the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area (PSA), 26 drink-driving offences were recorded, along with 482 speeding offences and 104 unregistered

vehicles detected, though no drug-affected drivers were recorded over the period. Healesville Police Sergeant Stewart Thomson said that local police would be working longer hours and running more operations, including Random Breath Test (RBT) sites, in order to catch drivers doing the wrong thing. Sgt Thomson urged all drivers to be aware of the effects of alcohol on concentration and to seek alternate means of transport if they plan on driving. Other offences recorded over the Operation RAID period were 2609 mobile phone related offences, 1719 unlicensed drivers caught and 11,732 speeding offences, among others.

1108236-KC51-13

If you drink or take drugs then drive, if you speed, if you drive unlicensed or an unregistered car, the party’s over.

Fox control – Lake Eildon National Park, Big River State forest, Rubicon State forest, Cathedral Range State Park, Marysville State forest, Yarra Ranges National Park and Toolangi State forest The Department of Environment and Primary Industries and Parks Victoria are committed to protecting and enhancing the natural values of parks, reserves and state forests across the state. Further details may be obtained by contacting Emily Borton at the Department of Environment and Primary Industries at Alexandra on (03) 5772 0200. www.depi.vic.gov.au Customer Service Centre 136 186 C1104857-JL51-13

New champs check in Flag win HEALESVILLE Tuesday Night Tennis winter/spring grand final resulted in Healesville Blue defeat Healesville Black. Ross Honeycombe, Jennie Quittner, Irene Leonard and Alan Honeycombe, above, pulled off a convincing win, 4 sets (28 games) to 2 sets (25 games) to claim the flag. The next night season with Healesville Tennis Club starts on the first Tuesday in February. Contact Janet Flamsteed on 5962 5331 for details.

TWO Hoddles Creek Primary School girls have become state champions after taking part in an orienteering event in Healesville. Monique, Alyssa, Billie and Hannah were among 12 students from Hoddles Creek Primary School who took part in the Orienteering Victoria State Championships on Friday 15 November. Hoddles Creek’s Monique and Alyssa won the Grade Six Pairs section, taking home the championship for their group.

Alyssa said that she and Monique worked well as a team and took 34 minutes and 14 seconds to find all of the checkpoints in the challenge. Billie and Hannah were runners-up in their sections in the championship event. Hoddles Creek Primary School principal John McKelvie said that the win was a great effort for the small Yarra Valley school. For more information on orienteering events, visit www. vicorienteering.asn.au.
