Saving Joshua

By MELISSA MEEHAN HE’S only six years old, but he has a massive fight on his hands.

And Joshua Schwarz’s parents say they will stop at nothing to fight the “naughty little bug” in his head.

Just meeting him, you wouldn’t guess that he has been given only months to live.

Joshua is fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer, coupled with a rare genetic disorder, making it almost impossible for doctors to treat him.

He was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in March, but two weeks ago his parents received the news no parent should hear.

“When he was first diagnosed in March, we thought it was a low-grade tumour that was treatable with radiation or chemotherapy,” mum Penne said.

“But after a biopsy two weeks ago, we were called in and told it was an anaplastic astrocytoma grade three (AA3), which is an aggressive, fastmoving form of brain cancer.”

After further tests, Penne and her husband Wolfgang, were told that Joshua also suffered from a rare genetic gene MSH6, which meant chemotherapy and radiation were not an option.

“The MSH6 stops cells from regenerating, which means the usual forms of treatment won’t work for Joshy - it would just cause more damage,” Penne said.

“And where the tumour sits, they can’t get to it - it’s in the area where language, understanding and movement are affected.

“So doctors won’t do it because there is a high risk of stroke, an inability to communicate, paralysis - it could basically turn him into a vegetative state.”

Faced with so many road-

blocks, Penne, Wolfgang and their daughter Jade hit the books, reading everything they could about AA3 and MSH6, in an effort to save Joshua.

“Because of his age it is hard to treat him,” Wolfgang said.

“But we’ve been in contact with hospitals in Germany and the United States.

“There are different things being done to treat cancer in Europe and the US - like stem cells, gene therapy and immunotherapy.”

The family plans to take Josh to Germany in an attempt to save him, or at the very least extend his life.

But they need the support of others to raise money for the trip and pay for his treatment.

Penne said the family had already witnessed so many acts of kindness from those in the community.

“His kinder has been amazing,” she said.

“And so many other people want to support us in our journey.

“Two weeks ago we had never heard of this type of cancer or the genetic disorder and with so much sadness, we’ve really seen the good in people.”

A fund-raiser will be held this Thursday 19 December at Sooki Lounge in Belgrave, where local bands will perform in exchange for a donation.

Friends have also organised a fund-raising day at the Upwey Anglican Church on Saturday 18 January from 12 noon to 4pm.

Auctions, raffles, kid stall activities, jumping castles and face painting will all be there on the day to celebrate Joshua’s life.

He’s only six years old, but he has a massive fight on his hands. Joshua’s parents say they will stop at nothing to fight his illness.

Kids in the kitchen

Principal of Silvan Primary School, Leigh Johnson said the standard of food was simply incredible.

“There were many different dishes such as a pumpkin risotto, a rustic vegie patty and crepes but the attention to detail was just amazing,” Mr Johnson said.

The Patch School won the Green Schools Sweet Award, Emerald Primary won the Green Schools Savoury Award and Silvan Primary won the Most Inspirational Dish Award.

LOCAL primary schools recently battled it out at the Green Schools Forum Kitchen Garden Cook Off. A field of 45 students from The Patch School, Emerald Primary School and Silvan Primary School came together to test their skills on 4 December.

The students were given a challenge to create a dish, but two ingredients had to be grown from the school and be served in front of two judges.

The students were congratulated for their efforts with a number of awards from judges Organic Empire, Angela and Australian Organic Schools, Jane Burns.

“Our judges were just great. They really inspired our students to create green food and the kids loved it,” Mr Johnson said.

“It’s been a real privilege to host this event and we hope for many more to come in the near future.”

Park upgrade takes shape STAGE TWO of the redevelopment of Melba Park is set to begin to make the park more usable for families.

Yarra Ranges councillor Terry Avery said the project would build on work already completed and provide a variety of recreation spaces in the park for the community to enjoy. “The project has been designed to improve sight lines and public safety,” he said.

“When the project is complete in the middle of next year we will have a vastly improved park for a wide variety of residents to enjoy.”

A master plan was developed in 2009 with stage one works completed earlier in the year which included the completion of a new playground, the sealing of the car park in Market Street and intalling a new barbecue.

Stage two of the plan will concentrate on the North West corner near Chapel Street and the Olinda Creek. Works will include turning the disused lake into submerged wetland to improve stormwater run-off into the Olinda Creek.

A new drink fountain will also be installed and contractors brought in to remove trees and dismantle earth mounds.

Nature-based play opportunities will be created with upgrades to pathways, new garden beds and trees.

Pool fight is on

Spokesperson for the committee fighting to save the Olinda Pool, John Faull makes no apologies for pushing council to keep the pool open. The council announced last month they would permanently close down the pool due to irreparable cracks. They also cited poor visitations to the pool.

He met with Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister last week to discuss the importance of the pool to the com-

munity. “I think it was a very positive meeting,” Mr Faull said. “But she has her hands tied by policies and other rules.”

He said the council had agreed to get an engineer’s report on the viability of repairing the pool and keeping it open.

“For us, it’s quite disappointing that after more than a month, the council still hasn’t got a quote for the repair works,” he said. “It took us a day.”

Mr Faull said a quote he organised to fix the pool came in quite reasonable.

“Obviously that would only be part of the cost, but it’s not astronomical,” he said.

While he feels the council has little or no intention of reopening the pool, Mr Faull and the community have rallied, saying they will not back down in their fight to save it.

“We’ll meet with the committee again next week and make plans to become more vocal and ask more questions,” he said. “We’re not going anywhere.”

Briefly Cellars theft OLINDA police are calling on witnesses to a break-in at a local liquor store.

Sergeant Paul Phillips said police believed that someone had jemmied the door open before stealing the till drawer and an unknown amount of cash from the Olinda Cellars.

“We have witnesses saying they saw two men hanging around the back of the building that night,” he said.

Driver fined

A CROYDON man has been caught driving while disqualified for a fifth time.

Senior Constable Aiden Williams said the 26-year-old was caught driving along Poyner Avenue in Lilydale on Wednesday.

The car the man was driving was impounded for 30 days and he was fined $813. It is believed the car was not his.

The man is expected to face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court in January.

Home invasion POLICE are calling on witnesses to a home invasion in Chirnside Park.

Police said four people were asleep in their Edward Road home on Wednesday 11 December when they were woken around 1am by a man who punched and kicked them demanding money.

IT WAS supposed to lift the main street of Monbulk, but the works brought more controversy than celebration.

For months, a vocal minority has complained about the new tree and parking bays outside shops in the town.

Some said the smaller car parks were causing accidents, others said the sharper kerbs were wreaking havoc on their tyres.

In an attempt to fix the problems, the Yarra Ranges Shire has made some minor changes to the concrete corners of the tree bays in response to community feedback.

Director Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said despite community support for the streetworks, some issues raised by some residents had been addressed.

“Overall, streetscape works in Monbulk have transformed the township and the majority of feedback we have received from both traders and the community has been extremely positive,” he said.

“It’s a great improvement on what it was before.”

Edge works aim to ease tree bays

BELGRAVE resident Sue Dilley went through many twists and turns to get her reward - but it was all worth it in the end.

Ms Dilley was awarded a cash prize after plaiting the longest ivy plait as part of the Yarra Ranges council’s weed blitz month.

As part of its efforts to free the Dandenong Ranges from the grip of environmental weeds, the council held a month of weed awareness activities including an ivy plait competition.

Individuals, community groups and schools took part in making longest ivy plait to “Save our Species” and “Tie up Ivy in the Dandenongs”.

Solar Citizens is already working hard to protect the rights of solar owners.

One recent example was when I and 21 other solar citizens spent a day at Parliament House in Canberra meeting

with Federal politicians.

We gave each member we met statistics on the number of solar houses in their electorate, the dollars those constituents had saved on their power bills, how many solar jobs have been created nationwide and how their electorate ranked out of Australia’s 150 electorates.

The statistics for all electorates are available on the Solar Citizens website.

An important topic in every meeting was a recent recommendation by the Australian Energy Market Commission that consideration be given to increasing fees on solar claiming that solar is being subsidized.

This isn’t the case and any serious investigation of the facts will show that.

Nonetheless, misleading information is being spread about solar and renewable energy by vested interests.

Trapped in the middle

By MELISSA MEEHAN IT was supposed to be the place where they built their dream home.

But this Cockatoo family have been told no planning permit will ever be issued for the block they purchased in 2008 thanks to the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO).

David Gowland said his land in Seaview Road is practically worthless.

“We bought the block back in September 2008 and started clearing the land straight away,” Mr Gowland said.

“But then Black Saturday happened in the February, we submitted our plans in March and were told to redesign the house so that we could get a permit.

“We did that, it was our dream house.”

But their plans were struck a blow when the CFA opposed the application for a permit.

“So now we have a half acre block that is worthless and two mortgages,” he said.

“And we can’t do anything about it - we can’t build on the block, and we don’t want to sell the problem to someone else.”

Mr Gowland said he and his family were confused as to why the permit was denied, considering

there are a number of other houses on the street.

“I guess our block is at the top of the hill, but this BMO means we’re stuck with a property that we can’t use,” he said.

“When it first all happened we stamped our feet about it, but no one seemed to listen, but more and more people are coming out about it now.

“And we’re going through the same thing - we just want a result.”

Mr Gowland, who is a resident of the Cardinia Shire, said he was glad to see Yarra Ranges councillors stand up for landowners going through the same thing as him.

“Like so many others, we bought the land with the intention to build our dream home,” he said.

“There has to be a better way why are we able to buy this land, and what help is available for those of us who bought the properties before Black Saturday, the Government should buy our properties back.”

A State Government spokesperson said the planning overlay didn’t stop anyone from being able to purchase land.

“In fact, they provide for clarity in how land can be developed,” she said.

“The Bushfire Management Overlay supports development that

responds to the surrounding areas and recognises that an area is prone to bushfire attack.”

The spokeperson said that the Bushfire Buy-back Scheme was only available to landowners whose properties were destroyed in the Black Saturday bushfires, and that the scheme is not related to the Bushfire Management Overlay.

Cardinia Shire General Manager Planning and Development Phil Walton said that the BMO didn’t stop the building of a house on the property and that in most applications a permit was granted.

“In a limited number of cases, the bushfire risk cannot be appropriately mitigated, and a permit application is refused,” Mr Walton said.

“Council supports the Bushfire Management Overlay that was introduced in response to the Black Saturday Royal Commission findings which sought to give priority to the protection of life,” he said, “Council is working with the CFA to investigate the option of refining the operation of the Bushfire Management Overlay as has occurred in the Mornington Peninsula Shire and supports a review of the overlay, acknowledging that any changes need to recognise the priority objective of the protection of life.”

SELBY Primary School and Selby Pre-School have collaborated allowing preschool children the opportunity to get a taste of what primary school life is all about.

Selby Primary School Principal Justin Butler said the school has partnered with the pre-school for the past year.

“Because we are a really small community a lot of kids in the kinder have siblings in the school and the administration for parent volunteers was very onerous and we had the office staff already at the school,” he said.

“A lot of the kinder students come along into this school setting anyway and this partnership allows for a lot stronger transition for them.”

Mr Butler said the preschool continues to operate in much the same manner as it has in the past, however, the link with the primary school allows for added opportunities in terms of use of facilities and resources.

“Every second week we have kids come up and read books in the library, use the kitchen class room and they meet with some of our Grade 5 students in a kind of buddy program,” he said.

Mr Butler said both the younger children in the kindergarten and the older children in the school love the interaction together.

Down to the wire

I REFER to A. Dobie’s letter (Get Rid Of It, Opinion 10 December).

I respect her opinion in relation to the art installation/Christmas tree on the Monbulk roundabout however I ask her and others to try and respect other people’s opinions, as in those of us who appreciated it and saw it for what it was intended to be.

I come from Ireland which is a Catholic country and I can assure her that there are many religious people who would not be insulted by it.

Throughout the world there are many variations of Christmas trees erected each year using local materials that relate to the region.

I have seen trees made out of old bicycles, old cars, old wine barrels, in some nurses stations in hospitals I have seen trees made out of latex gloves.

In Monbulk, which is the Flower Capital, the wire used in the tree was discarded wire mesh used to support the flowers as they grow.

Thank you to the literally thousands of people who showed their support for the project and for the artwork, which has got people talking about Monbulk and brought much needed visitors and customers to the town.

I invite A. Dobie and others who have shown a genuine passion for Monbulk in their condemnation of the tree to consider putting their names forward to volunteer their time to do something positive in an active way for the town.

MADCOW (Monbulk and District Community Opportunities Workgroup) is seeking new members to help in the many proposed projects on behalf of residents and business in Monbulk and surrounding districts.

I agree, GRIM is a good acronym Great Recycling Ingeniously Made John Coleman, President Monbulk Business Network, Committee member MADCOW.

MR COLEMAN’S lack of understanding of local laws and public safety beggars belief when he pulled this publicity stunt in getting others to erect the wire Christmas tree by local artist Joost Bakker.

What was he thinking? - I won’t answer that!

He should have contacted the local police and councillor, VicRoads and the shire’s engineering department.

If someone was injured in a car accident he would have been in a lot of trouble.

There is a suitable tree that has been lopped in St Georges Church yard that was far more suitable and the wire tree could have remained there until Christmas.

A lot of people put a lot of effort into erecting the tree and then been forced to pull it down again well before 25 December.

Not a smart move.

Tree change WHAT a blast of publicity for Monbulk there was last Friday 6 Decmeber.

Whether you liked or loathed the tree it certainly got people both local and national talking about Monbulk.

Personally I did not like it but at my age I do not like a lot of modern art, however I do not approve of the rant and rage that was expressed against the artist and those who organised the installation.

Indeed from what I read it seems that the vast majority of the bemoaners were not from Monbulk.

Most of the people I spoke to in Monbulk did like it and even though they did not know that it was made from farm flower wire they thought it was interesting.

And yes there were some that did not like it at all however they did not rant against the organizers or artist.

I would like to thank the artist and

the business network for having done something for Monbulk that cost ratepayers nothing.

Their generousity and voluntary work was appreciated my many of us locals who having lived a long time in this town have too often heard complainers and letter writers find fault with things yet we never hear them put their hand up to offer their time or services to do anything.

Class action ANOTHER school year has come to an end for secondary school students in the outer east however this year will be different; this year our kids will have no local alternative for higher education available to them.

Of the six Melbourne metropolitan regions, ours is the only one not to have its own higher education facility.

This makes our kids more disadvantaged on this issue than kids living in the western and northern suburbs.

Our kids are the only ones who have no choice but to travel long distances or live away from home to undertake tertiary study.

I wonder how many local kids this year were forced to say ‘I can’t do it’ and opt not to go on to further study.

Before the university at Lilydale was opened the outer east had the lowest participation rate of 17 to 24 year olds in higher education of any of the six Melbourne metropolitan regions.

Young people in the city’s inner eastern suburbs were more than twice as likely to finish school and go to university than our kids.

This is our reality again.

Called to account IN response to the letter about council bashing, it is simplistic to think that councillors only have to make decisions as they relate to the budget and tease up a consensus here and there.

Holding councillors accountable for the decisions they make is neither silly nor council bashing.

When councils make commitments in writing to protect things and then do the opposite, they can expect to reap the whirlwind from their constituents.

When they bury the truth and manipulate the people to achieve their agenda, that is deceitful, breaches the Local Government Act and deserves strong public scrutiny and objection.

It’s not silly. It’s called democracy.

It’s not just a pool THANK you, Simon Drysdale (Pool Draws Generations, Mail, 3 December), for your wider view of how Olinda Swimming Pool has continued to be enjoyed.

To borrow one of your phrases, “Olinda Swimming Pool isn’t just about the water”, though that is the core and beneficial element, it’s about how the 1962 fires terrorised and devastated Dandenongs communities and what the community, council (Lilydale) and the State Government did about averting another such local disaster.

Under the leadership of the Dandenong Ranges Fire Prevention Committee, plans were made, negotiations were begun, community funds were raised and goals were achieved.

Within two years of the fires, Olinda Swimming Pool had been built as a water storage for CFA use - and the delighted use of the young and not so young.

Since December 1964, the pool’s existence continues to be significant and relevant to more than the immediate community.

And who knows if we are really done with the ‘why’ the pool was built?

Thanks for the phrase Simon, because ‘it isn’t just about the water’ but much more as well.

Drivers still on edge... of ravine

By REBECCA BILLS CONCERNED residents are worried that temporary pothole patching is not enough to keep Monbulk Road users safe.

Although the section of Monbulk Road from the roundabout in Belgrave to Wedgewood Avenue has been undergoing repair works, the stretch from Wedgewood Avenue to the Kallista roundabout still has locals concerned.

Local Monbulk residents Michelle and Brendan Creham, who frequently use the road, met with the Mail and said the problem with Monbulk Road has been going on for years and they are worried someone could lose their life due to state of the road.

“To avoid a pot hole you can either

go over the side of the road and risk going into the ravine or onto oncoming traffic,” Mrs Creham said.

“People have already lost their lives going into the ravine off the road - we would hate to see that happen again.”

Mrs Creham said the road gets patched spasmodically but she feels patching is not the answer as she finds it only takes a few days before the road starts to deteriorate again.

“The section along here (from Wedgewood Avenue to the Kallista roundabout) was breaking down within a week of it being re-surfaced a few years ago,” she said.

“Our main concern is that people are trying to avoid them and there is nowhere to go.”

VicRoads Regional Director Adam

Maguire said VicRoads staff regularly monitored the road network to ensure routine maintenance is carried out where required.

“The section of Monbulk Road between Wedgewood Avenue and the roundabout in Kallista has been scoped for major patching works and a bid has been submitted for the 201415 funding program,” he said.

“Until then, our maintenance crews are keeping the road safe with regular maintenance including pothole patching and “Rough Surface” signs are in place to alert road users to drive to conditions.

“VicRoads is committed to providing safe conditions and encourages all road users to report any incidents or road hazards by calling 13 11 70.”

Commuters urged to add voices

By REBECCA BILLS “NOW IS the time to speak up,” said Yarra Ranges Councillor and Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC) chairperson Samantha Dunn.

As the State Election draws closer, commuter lobbying is ramping up for better outcomes for priority funding to upgrade public transport across the Hills. Cr Dunn said the funding allocated to public transport projects in the next State Budget will be a true indicator of the State Government’s commitment to the area.

She said there was a backlog of public transport projects across the eastern region identified through studies,

plans and audits conducted over decades.

“The million residents of the eastern suburbs can’t wait until 2028 for the generational improvements needed,” she said.

“The current debate about road versus rail ignores the real need of commuters and businesses alike - we need better transport infrastructure, not choices between modes.”

Cr Dunn said residents in the Hills have had enough of public transport plans and studies that do not produce results, due to them not gaining funds or being pushed too far into the future.

“Funding needs to be provided to ensure that there are

enough buses to meet demand and that travel times are improved to make it a viable option to car travel,” she said.

“Melbourne’s bus services have been the subject of numerous review and recommendations, including the Metropolitan Bus Service Review, completed in 2010.

“Unfortunately, less than 10 per cent of the recommendations from that review have been funded and realised.”

Cr Dunn said commuters can share their views and hopes for the coming State Budget via the ETC’s Commuters Count Facebook page or the hash tag #commuterscount on Twitter.

By REBECCA BILLS MATTHEW Fagan is bringing the festive cheer to Burrinja this Christmas in a special Guitar and Ukulele Spectacular with special guest JAKK. Featuring songs from the ’60s and ’70s, Led Zepplin, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Beatles, Neil Young and more this is Mr Fagan and JAKK’s debut duo performance together.

“This is a bit different to my usual shows with JAKK as a special guest - I usually perform as a solo act,” Mr Fagan said.

Known for his virtuosity and versatility on the guitar, Mr Fagan always surprises audience with his original arrangements and modern interpretation of a repertoire that spans many era’s and cultures.

“I will be going back to my classical Spanish guitar to play some beautiful old English carols in the show,” Mr Fagan said.

“Instrumentally, it really brings out the beauty of the music and on the 10-string, it creates magic.”

“Throughout the show I use four instruments and it really is a journey of guitars from around the world.”

Mr Fagan will impress you

with his spin on genres that travels across Spanish classical to Celtic, Flamenco, Latin American and other world music.

“In my show, I do a special thing called guitar challenge where I ask for songs requested from the audience and I make it into a medley,” Mr Fagan said. “I want them to feel they are a part of the show as it’s not a sit back and listen concert.”

Mr Fagan has previously toured with an impressive lineup of international acts including Natalie Cole, Billy Connolly, Shirley Bassey and Michael Crawford.

“The 52 nights touring with Billy Connolly was the most valuable experience on how to be an entertainer,” he said.

“He gave me one of his banjos as a present at the end of the tour to say thank-you and now in my concerts I like to talk about stories like that experience.”

Matthew Fagan’s Pre-Christmas Guitar and Ukulele Spectacular with guest JAKK is on 20 December at Burrinja Café, 351 Glenford Road, Upwey at 6.30pm.

A CHANCE to transport back in time to the heyday of silent movies accompanied by jazz band The Sound of Silent is being brought to Belgrave.

The Cameo Theatre will be hosting the group in their outdoor cinema as they accompany the 1928 silent comedy Steamboat Bill Jnr starring icon Buster Keaton.

The Sounds of Silent is a five-piece ensemble featuring some of Melbourne’s most versatile and accomplished musicians who recreate the silent movie experience from the ’20s and ’30s with fun, improvised performances.

The group is dedicated to helping audiences rediscover the great movies of the time by recreating the cinema experience of days gone by.

Musical director of The Sounds of Silent Martin Zakharov said Buster Keaton is one of the great figures of film history.

“It’s amazing to see how enjoyable his work is nearly a century later,” he said.

“We aim to give the audience a sense of the atmosphere that was experienced in the ’20s as the new technology of cinema swept the world.

“We feature many well-known pieces from that era as well as drawing on more recent compositions - the music is performed with a line-up and style typical of that period.”

“When that scene changes, so do we,” he said.

“I think the live music does add a dif-

ferent character to the experience.

“It’s been fascinating to discover what a different experience it becomes to watch silent movies in a ‘live’ atmosphere.”

The performance at the Cameo Outdoor Cinema will be completely acoustic using the original instruments that would have been used in the 1920s and ’30s.

“Back then, silent movies weren’t actually silent, as cinema audiences were always able to enjoy live music that enriched their viewing of each movie,” Mr Zakharov said.

“Steamboat Bill Jnr is a classic of cinema history, and definitely enjoyable for all age groups.

“Keaton is one of the great writers and performers of the twentieth century, and a comedy spectacular like this isn’t quickly forgotten.”

The Sounds of Silent are taking Buster Keaton and their show to the “Taste of Tasmania” festival in January but hope to be back at the Cameo for another show soon.

The screening of the 1928 Steamboat Bill Jnr with live jazz from The Sounds of Silent is at the Cameo Outdoor Theatre, 1628 Burwood Highway, Belgrave, on Friday 20 December at 8.30pm.

Costa’s visit a big hit

By JODIE SYMONDS ABC’S Gardening Australia host recently made a flowery visit to see his beloved fans in Mount Evelyn.

The disability workers’ program at Garden Lovers Yarra View Nursery brought Costa Georgiadis to meet the people who idolise him.

The nursery program enables 80 volunteer workers with disabilities to gain hands-on experience in the gardening industry. They all got the chance to meet their gardening guru. And Costa couldn’t help himself as he started helping to weed the garden as soon as he arrived at Yarra View Nursery.

“For me, it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to understand a community and the work that they do for disabled

workers,” he said. “They’re doing the work and have been working extremely hard to work up those skills required to be in the workforce, which is just great.”

Yarra View Nursery manager Bernie Sullivan said seeing the enjoyment on his staff’s faces when the saw Costa was priceless.

“It’s really about the workers to have someone of that calibre in the same industry, doing the same work that they’re doing,” Mr Sullivan said.

“But look at them, look how happy they are to meet him; they’re absolutely jumping out of their skins.

“We have Costa’s DVDs and they’ve been used for educational purposes to teach about landscaping practices

PETER and Marylin Siegman’s Christmas obsession has taken hold once again.

The Emerald retirees have added even more to their already astonishing Christmas lights display and all they want is for other local residents to share in the joy they have for the festive season.

Peter, now in his 70s, estimates that he has put in “at least 60 hours” of work into building and setting up the display in his Ulmer Road front yard.

But he has been constantly battling the elements - particularly the rain. He aimed to have the lights switched on for the start of December fell a few days behind schedule.

“You have to be careful of the rain - to make sure you get the controllers off the ground so the water can’t get in,” Peter said.

“It’s the biggest issue we’ve faced.”

But the display is back bigger than ever.

The Siegmans aren’t asking for much - just for people to stop by and have a look, and maybe be inspired to create their own lights displays next year.

This Ulmer Road Christmas Lights display truly has to be seen to be believed.

Peter has added a few more spectacular features for his 2013 display - one of Santa falling down the chimney, some mind-blowing stars, and a six-metre long waterfall display.

Peter has entered the modern, technological age with his lights too - gradually replacing the bulbs with brighter, more energy efficient LED lights which now make up 70 per cent of the dis-

play. Peter and Marylin don’t know how many lights they have in their display, exactly, but the figure would well and truly be in the thousands... too many to count.

Peter and Marylin’s Christmas lights are on display each night from now until the New Year.

Soccer ace plays a world game IF ALL goes according to plan for Gembrook teenager Ryan Scott, this will be his last season behind the stumps as a wicket-keeper.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not that he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t love cricket far from it, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been playing ever since he was nine years old - but heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hoping he may have one or two slightly more pressing soccer commitments on his calendar in 2014.

Ryan, now 17, played a key role in the Emerald Cricket Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s District division WGCA premiership in season 2012-13.

But, just as the side made the step up into the Premier tier, he took a step back - realising this may be his last chance to play alongside big brother Geordie, Gembrookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s B Grade skipper.

While the move might have seemed like a head-scratcher to some at the time, this time next year cricket could well be the furthest thing from Ryanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mind as his focus looks set to be taken up keeping gloves of a different kind.

At the moment, though, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a hypothetical situation. His immediate focus is on two separate soccer tours of England and Wales - coming home in between to celebrate his 18th birthday with family and friends.

Geordie also has the world game pumping through his veins having played in recent seasons for Monbulk

and Mornington - where Ryan followed.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a trend that started some 13 years ago - when Ryan got into soccer after watching Geordie play.

As the younger brother, Ryan would always have to keep goal in the family backyard. Seniority ruled.

Maybe thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why Ryan loved playing in the midfield so much as he progressed through the ranks - from Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, back to Melbourne to play with Berwick City, and then to Monbulk and Mornington.

But about two-and-a-half years ago - well after his cricket wicket-keeping career started - a light bulb went off. As someone who wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly blessed with blistering speed, maybe he should make more use of that exceptional hand-eye co-ordination.

He is currently in England on the first of his two tours - this one for the West Ham International Academy.

As part of the touring party, he is playing and training against Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham, Coventry, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bolton Wanderers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We get training from their coaches and play against their academy sides their youth teams,â&#x20AC;? Ryan told the Mail at the Gembrook Cricket Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rooms shortly before embarking on the first of his whirlwind trips.

If that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough to make his

head spin - he is also in the stands taking in some blockbuster clashes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see Liverpool versus West Ham at Anfield, Manchester United and Chelsea - both in the Champions League, and Tottenham in the Europa League,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The only match-up the mad Newcastle United fan isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t thrilled about is West Hamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clash with Newcastleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bitter enemy, Sunderland.

While he will return to Australia briefly to celebrate his step into adulthood, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be back in England as goalkeeper for the Australian under-19 schoolboys side before he barely has time to blink. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I turn 18 the day after I get back the first time, go to Sydney on 6 January for a two-day training camp and then head back over there,â&#x20AC;? Ryan said, still in a state of amazement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We go to England, then Wales to play the Cardiff and Swansea youth sides. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also play Sheffield United, the Welsh schoolboys, British schoolboys and the British College schoolboys.â&#x20AC;?

All of it is invaluable exposure to a youngster desperate to prove his worth on the big stage.

But he knows the importance of keeping a level head. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great privilege to be going over there,â&#x20AC;? he said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;(And) Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to die wondering. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I pull on the Australian shirt it will be a pretty special moment thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when I think it will all sink in.â&#x20AC;?

Ryan attends the Ringwood-based Sports Education and Development Australia (SEDA) school - part of Melbourne Victoryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Talented Player Program (TPP).

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s there he is taught by one of his biggest influences in football so far Billy Natsioulas.

If it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for him, and Melbourne Knights goalkeeper of the century Peter Blasby - Scottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coach at State League 2 side Mornington - the Gembrook youngster doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not 100 per cent sure on where Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m playing yet next year but, obviously, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be happy to stay at Mornington if the senior spot is there,â&#x20AC;? Ryan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just want to play senior football and, hopefully, have a good year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I need to put my head down and not get a big head or anything - I just need to work hard. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit different being a goalkeeper, too - sometimes you might only get one chance to impact a game. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve just got to be on your toes and ready to go.â&#x20AC;?

By REBECCA BILLS ONE hundred and fifty years of cricket in the Yarra Ranges is on display showcasing the life of the sport in the hills.

The Yarra Ranges Museum is hosting 150 Not Out: 150 years of the Lilydale Cricket Club to celebrate players, presidents, the club and the teams that have opposed them and been a part of the local game over the years.

The exhibition also offers a rare opportunity to see the Melba Cup in the flesh.

The cup was donated to Lilydale District Cricket Association in 1924 by Dame Nellie Melba which was then awarded to Seville Cricket Club in 1932 after the club won it five times.

Councillor Terry Avery said the exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to see original trophies, uniforms, medals, im-

ages and personal stories from past and present players. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sport has been such an important part of our local history,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over the years cricket has brought our community together and continues to do so today.â&#x20AC;?

In 1863, the first game of cricket was played in Lilydale with teams visiting the club from the inner suburbs of Melbourne.

Some of the first more local opponents were Yarra Flats (Yarra Glen), Wandin Yallock and Coranderrk, a team representing the Aboriginal Reserve near Healesville.
