BRIMBANK City Council’s administrators have passed a special rates scheme to help promote the St Albans town centre after receiving 126 submissions on the proposal. Earlier this year, the council received a request from the St Albans Business Group Association to introduce the scheme to help with marketing the area. Last week the council’s three administrators voted to adopt the St Albans Town Centre Area Marketing and Business Development Scheme. During a community consultation period, the council received 10 submissions supporting the scheme and 115 objections against it. It has been estimated the plan will raise more than $112,000 during its first year. The special rates will be based on the capital improved value of each property multiplied by 0.00060, combined with minimum of $100 charge, increasing two per cent annually across five years. Some of the objectors to the scheme have said more parking would be needed in the St Albans town centre before the scheme was introduced. Some business owners said they

would like to see all day spaces, parking zones with longer time limits and more employee parking. “There is no point in attracting more people to St Albans as there is not even enough parking for local resident(s),” one submission said. However St Albans Business Group president Sebastian Agricola said the association was “very happy” the council passed their proposal. “Assuming it goes through without any issue we will ramp it up next year and improve conditions for traders in St Albans by bringing more people into the area,” he said. “It’s to help promote the interests of the business in the area and generate more business in the area.” Mr Agricola said this would be done through a variety of ways including special events, like the annual Lunar Festival. Mr Agricola said the St Albans shopping strip had traditionally found it difficult to compete against nearby bigger complexes, and the special rates scheme would assist with the situation. The council has commenced a project to examine the development of parking at council land in Collins St.

By ALESHA CAPONE RESIDENTS living next to the Regional Rail Link construction have measured noise coming from the site at higher than the recommended sound levels. The Fix the Links group has been advocating for the Regional Rail Link Authority to locate the train line within a cutting along its Deer Park section. Members of the group have said they believe noise walls, which the RRLA have proposed building between Sunshine and Deer Park,

will not work. Sunshine North resident and the Fix the Links member, John Kodric, said residents had measured the sound level of bells at a crossing on both its Ridgeway Parade and Forrest St sides. He said the bells at the crossing, located 22 metres away from houses, reached 76 decibels (dB). Mr Kodric said residents had also measured a goods train at over 105dB at 40 metres away from homes. The RRLA said its noise walls

had been designed to keep the sound threshold at an average of 65dB(A) between 6am and 10pm, 60dB(A) at night and a maximum of 85dB(A) at all times for adjoining residents. ‘dB(A)’ stands for the relative loudness of sounds in air as perceived by the human ear. According to a Brimbank City Council report released last week, these limits have been defined in the RRLA Passenger Rail Infrastructure Noise Policy. “RRLA has informed council the corten material proposed for the

noise walls exceeds a density of 16 kilograms per square, which it advises is the density required to attenuate noise,” the Brimbank report said. An RRL spokesperson said the scientifically-tested noise barriers would help to block the main source of rail noise. “The planned noise barriers have been designed by award-winning architects, following consultation with local councils and the community and the review of community feedback,” the spokesperson said.

IT IS now officially time to be turned on in Sunshine and Albion, after Telstra announced 4G coverage for the area. The telco last week released a list of 200 suburbs and towns which would be included in 4G LTE mobile coverage by the end of 2013. A statement from Telstra said typical download speeds of between two to 50 megabits per second would apply for movies and music but actual customer speeds in Brimbank would still vary, depending on distance from the base station and each user’s device. The Telstra Countrywide area general manager for Melbourne’s CBD and North West, Robert Franze, said the new 4G coverage would support both residents and businesses in Sunshine and Albion.

Police eye break-ups By CHARLENE MACAULAY TAKE care when wrapping up your Christmas shopping – Victoria Police will be on the roads and watching. Victoria Police has rolled out Operation Break Up across the state, which is targeting the fatal five road user behaviours which are known causes of road trauma. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said the community could expect to see

police at all major shopping hubs and anywhere else where there will be an influx of cars, pedestrians and cyclists. Asst Comm Hill said police would be placing particular focus on driver distraction and seatbelts as we head into the festive season. “Police will be in the CBD, on the roads around major shopping centres and patrolling the local shopping strips to make sure all road users do the right things in these areas,” he said.

“We know this time of the year can be really hectic and people have a lot of things on their minds. “But it’s also a time where we have a lot of our most vulnerable road users, both young and old, on the roads. “That makes it even more important to ensure all drivers remain vigilant and take extra care. “If you receive a ticket for using your mobile phone while you are driving, get booked for not wearing a seatbelt or you’re penalised for not

crossing the roads correctly, I make no apologies. “That ticket may just be the reminder or the intervention needed to prevent someone being seriously injured or killed in a collision. “I urge all road users to turn off the distractions and switch on when you are out on the roads.” Operation Break Up, which will run until 23 December, is the second operation of the Summer Stay road enforcement campaign.

Sunshine resident Ayuen Autiak, left, has won two categories at the Victorian African Community Awards. Her community work has included organising a fashion show in which her Melton friend Abuk Ajeng, right, modelled a traditional outfit. 111842 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

Ayuen, the quiet achiever recognised By ALESHA CAPONE A QUIET achiever from Sunshine has been recognised at the Victorian African Community Awards 2013. Ayuen Autiak received two awards at the VACA ceremony in Richmond. Ms Autiak was presented with the Quiet Achiever award and the VACA prize for Best Project. She was nominated for the category after organising a South Sudanese fashion show attended by more than 500 people in Sunshine last month.

Ms Autiak said the cultural attire featured in the fashion show was traditionally worn to special events like weddings and parties. The winning outfit at the parade was designed by Sunshine tailor Bori Akechak and modelled by Melton resident Abuk Ajeng. Ms Ajeng said her husband Autiak and children Awet, 13, and Adut, 11, were proud of her achievement. Ms Ajeng said she would like to model for another fashion show in the future. “It’s not hard work, it was fun

because everyone liked it,” she said. Ms Autiak said she was already planning another, bigger fashion show for next year. She said her children Adhel and Adut Aleu have been “very supportive” of the fashion show. “It was very nice that night because everybody’s happy,” Ms Autiak said. She attended the VACA presentation with Monica Majak and Mama Marina who helped her organise the fashion show. Ms Autiak said she felt excited to

receive the two awards at the VACA show, which included a special tribute to Nelson Mandela. “I was very happy, it was wonderful,” she said. “It was the first time for me to hold awards in my life. “It was a blessing to hold them, when there was a celebration of the life of Nelson Mandela, who was the father of Africa.” Ms Autiak also thanked Adieng Manut and Tong Gob who acted as MCs at the fashion show and Gai Deng Niel for organising the pair to do the job.

Thief appeals jail term By ALESHA CAPONE A MAN who committed more than 50 crimes in locations including the West has appealed his jail sentence. The Supreme Court of Victoria Court of Appeal recently heard Bradley Berry was sentenced to more than four years’ imprisonment during May this year. He was given a non-parole period of two years and six months after committing 58 offences including theft, obtaining property by deception, attempted armed robbery, handling stolen goods and aggravated assault. The offender’s first charge in the crime spree happened in June 2012 when Berry stole a woman’s purse while she was shopping in Hoppers Crossing. Berry went on to steal purses and handbags from people in Altona, Altona Meadows, Caroline Springs, Maribyrnong, Point Cook and Williamstown. Sometimes he was accompanied by a co-accused who would steal the bags while Berry distracted the victim. At one stage, the pair conducted transactions worth more than $3000 with stolen credit cards at Altona, Altona North, Braybrook, Hoppers Crossing, Sydenham, Taylors Lakes and Werribee stores. Berry was finally captured when Westfield Plaza security staff from recognised him and the co-accused on 27 July last year. When the guards followed the duo outside, Berry produced a large hunting knife. Berry ran away towards a sedan driven by a 67-year-old woman and her 70-year-old husband. Berry opened the car’s passenger side door and ordered the woman to drive, but the woman exited the vehicle and her husband pulled on the handbrake to stop the car. Berry jumped out and ran into the front of another car being driven by a woman and made her stop the vehicle. She trapped Berry’s arm in the car’s door frame before he escaped. Berry then attempted to gain entry to another vehicle driven by a grandmother, with her sixyear old-granddaughter and four-year-old grandson inside. Justice Paul Coghlan told the court this failed and police later arrested Berry, before taking him to the Geelong Police Station. Judge Coghlan and two other judges did not reduce Berry’s original sentence.

Learning for life A STRATEGY designed to help improve education access and outcomes in Brimbank will be released for public consultation. Last week Brimbank City Council’s administrators endorsed the draft Community Learning Strategy 2014-’17 for public exhibition. The draft document will be open for residents to submit their views in written submissions across six weeks. The council and its partners commenced implementing the previous learning strategy in 2010 to support learning across every resident’s lifetime.

Cop’s case for safe High-tech borrowing driving Christmas POLICE have urged Brimbank and Melton residents to stay safe as the Christmas season gets underway. The area’s crime prevention officer, Leading Senior Constable Matt Mudie, has appealed for motorists to stay safe on the roads. “For many readers and their families this time of the year will also mean a much-deserved holiday from work and/or school commitments,” he said. “If you are planning on driving anywhere over this holiday period, please ensure you take care and

consider all road users. “Prior to leaving home, consider planning your trip that will give you adequate breaks and allow time for unexpected delays. “Our state’s current road toll is at an all-time low and it is the responsibility of the whole community for it to remain this way. “Speed and driver distraction still remains as one of the leading contributors to serious injury and death on our roads, so please adhere to the speed limit and remember that the key factor to driving these holidays

is to arrive safely at our destination.” Leading Sen Const Mudie said people attending parties and work break-ups should also plan on taking public transport or appoint a designated driver if they would be celebrating with alcohol. Police have also urged residents to keep home security in mind because Christmas presents could potentially pose are an attractive target for burglars. Acting Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer has said residential burglaries traditionally increase during

the Christmas and New Year holiday period. “Intelligence tells us that while a lot of people take holidays and are enjoying the festive season, it seems some might drop their guard on home security,” he said. “If you do see someone hanging around residential areas and acting suspiciously, it’s important that you contact police immediately.” To report suspicious behaviour please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Puppy love a festive priority

Urban gurus at guerrilla park

By ALESHA CAPONE TO HELP all creatures great and small have the pawfect - or purrfect Christmas requires some compassion and common sense from their human counterparts. St Albans resident Liliana Iuri, who founded the Pet Neighbourhood Watch Action Group, said the number of unwanted pets dumped in Brimbank and Melton after the festive season had become an annual tragedy. Ms Iuri said across the past five years, she had noticed the number of dumped and stray animals increasing in the West. “According to RSPCA information, there is an increase in unwanted animals at this time of year,” she said. She has encouraged anyone thinking of buying a dog, cat, rabbit or bird for Christmas to put plenty of thought into the decision. “I would actually advocate not to purchase a pet, but probably go to the animal welfare agencies and adopt a pet,” Ms Iuri said. “Visit, buy the food and gear your lifestyle towards the welfare of the animal. I think people should do it very gradually. “Having a pet in the home takes an enormous time commitment, emotional commitment and can restrict your freedom in situations such as when going on holiday - you need to consider the animal’s needs.” Ms Iuri has also encouraged pet owners to ensure their animals are microchipped, desexed and kept within an enclosed yard or indoors.

THREE new online products will bring Brimbank resident’s favourite books and magazines into the new age. Brimbank library members can now access popular magazines and e-books on their internet and internet-enabled devices including PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads, Androids, Kindle Fires and Blackberry Playbooks. The programs - Overdrive, Borrow Box and Zinio - allow library members to read or download a range of titles in libraries or their homes. Overdrive contains of e-books and e-audiobooks, including bestsellers, new releases and educational e-books. Borrow Box has more than 2000 e-book and eaudiobook titles with fiction and non-fiction titles for adults and children by Australian and international authors. Zinio is a digital magazine provider. First-time users need to register and are then free to browse magazine titles to download. These products are available at no charge through the Brimbank library website www.brimbanklibraries.vic.gov.au, but library membership is required to access Overdrive, Borrow Box and Zinio.

WHAT do you think of Sunshine’s main street? This is the question Brimbank City Council will be asking residents later this week. The council is setting up a ‘surprise park’ along Hampshire Rd as part of the street market on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 December. Residents will be asked their opinion of the council’s draft Hampshire Rd Master Plan - and also offered a coffee as they chat to ‘urban designer gurus’ about the proposal. There will be key illustrative concept designs for residents to comment on at the park. The draft plan can also be viewed at www. brimbank.vic.gov.au if you cannot make it to the pop-up park event.

St Albans resident Ruth Gatt with her cat Oscar, who was adopted from the Lost Dog’s Home in North Melbourne. 111851 She said unusual breeds or cute creatures could be stolen - or simply taken in by strangers - if permitted to roam at large. “I would actually say no to letting them go in the street or run free,” Ms Iuri said.

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) has also advised Victorians to be careful about the kind of food they dish up to pets during Christmas. Dr David Neck from the AVA said foods which could be dangerous, or

even toxic, to dogs and cats included chocolate, nutmeg, avocados, onion, garlic, turkey skin, pork crackling, sausages, fatty meats, grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, dairy products, raw eggs, mushrooms, raw fish, citrus fruit, green potatoes and large quantities of tomatoes or salt.

A NEW enclosed shooting range at the Melton Pistol Club was opened last week by mayor Bob Turner. Melton City Council delivered the project to reduce noise issues and to improve safety in the area. Cr Turner said the council was proud to support a wide range of recreational activities within the City of Melton. “Council is committed to providing high quality infrastructure for our community,” he said. “The construction of the enclosed shooting range is a significant upgrade to the facility and is the first of its kind in Australia.” The Melton Pistol Club has been operating for 35 years and provides recreation and social opportunities for residents as well as training and development for Victoria Police and staff from nearby remand centres.

Charity from the heart By ALESHA CAPONE A CAIRNLEA mother has raised more than $10,000 for the Cancer Council after hosting a Girls’ Night In. Janev Aziz said she was overwhelmed at the support she received for the Ja’Min Girls’ Night In, which raised funds for the Cancer Council’s I Love Pink campaign. “We raised $10,030 at the end and we were very pleased with that and it was such a team effort,” Ms Aziz said. “It really was a team effort, not just one person.” The Cairnlea Soccer Club

provided the venue for the event free of charge. In addition, many people volunteered to help out with the night, cook or donate items to be auctioned or raffled. These included a one night stay at The Langham, Ms Aziz’s friend who donated a four-hour boat trip for six people, Guess bags and a Williamstown optometrist who donated a pair of designer sunglasses. Ms Aziz’s daughter acted as the auctioneer at the Girls’ Night In and also helped to organise the event. The enterprising pair have already started planning anoth-

er fund-raising event - or two for next year. This time around they want to split the funds raised between breast cancer research and a prostate cancer charity. “We’re hoping to raise $10,000 again,” Ms Aziz said. “We just think men’s health is very important too. “I’m really passionate about it. “I think it’s really good if you can give something back to the community. “I say I’ve got a busy life but, if you put your mindset to something, you can do it.”

There will be some delays but the works will help create a modern, safe and connected transport network.

Fully Licensed & B.Y.O (Wine Only) Keilor teenager Erandi Banneyake has a hit song in Sri Lanka with her release ‘Moving On Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Up’. 111840

Songstress wows Sri Lanka By ALESHA CAPONE KEILOR teenager Erandi Banneyake has struck a chord in Sri Lanka where her new song is zooming up the radio charts. The 14-year-old’s third single ‘Moving On Up’ has made it into the countdown of the YesFM Home Grown Top 15 in Sri Lanka. The song premiered on the station last month and Erandi was interviewed on air for its debut. “I guess you could say it’s an inspiring song because it’s about independence and growing up. It has a very catchy tune and is also a very happy song,” Erandi said.

Last Thursday, she was again interviewed by another Sri Lankan radio station, RedFM, during its breakfast show. ‘Moving On Up’ features a guest appearance from one of Sri Lankan’s top rappers, Krishan Maheson, who heard the song being produced at his company and volunteered his services for the track. Erandi’s proud father Mangala described his daughter as “very humble” about her singing success. “It’s so fun. I really enjoy it, I just love singing,” Erandi said. “It’s a hobby and I can’t imagine life without singing. “I just like singing all different types of genres. I really love

pop and younger music, but I really love singing everything.” She has been studying at the Vocal Art Studios in Tullamarine for the past few years. Erandi’s singing career first took off in Sri Lanka when she was just 10, when her debut single was played on the country’s radio stations. Erandi, who will be going into Year 10 next year, said balancing her academic studies and singing could sometimes be a challenge. “It’s pretty hard but I find a way to manage it,” she said. “On the nights I don’t have homework I can practice my singing.”

Twentyman’s call on ice age WESTERN Suburbs youth worker Les Twentyman has addressed a Victorian parliamentary committee about the impact methamphetamines are having on the community. Mr Twentyman said the State Government needed to take urgent action to combat the rising use of methamphetamines to help “hidden victims of the epidemic” including children subjected to violence, medical workers, crime victims and addicts who cannot access services. “The enormity of the problem should not be underestimated and while I am pleased to see the government looking into the issue through this committee it is important for all

in Spring Street to understand that we cannot wait to act,” Mr Twentyman said. “I have been contacted by so many communities looking for help and support to tackle this problem and we need to see government resourcing in areas such as rehabilitation to help kids get off the drug, and to see an increase in the funding of youth workers in schools working to keep kids away from the drug in the first place.” Earlier this year Mr Twentyman told Star ice use had become especially rampant in Footscray, Sunshine, Braybrook, Werribee and St Albans.

Heat on arsonists By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO WITH the onset of summer Melton City Council is encouraging residents to report any suspicious behaviour in a bid to detect and catch would-be arsonists. The council and Victoria Police are working together as part of the Victoria Police - Bushfire Arson Prevention Campaign 2013-’14. Operation Firesetter which forms part of the campaign is a major priority for police but the council is also calling on residents to do their part. The community is being asked to report any suspicious behaviour to police by calling triple zero immediately. They should also gather as much information as possible including location, the type of suspicious be-

haviour, vehicle description, registration number and a suspicious person’s physical appearance. A confidential call can be made to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 if they suspect someone of bushfire arson. Victoria Police statistics reveal there were 3091 offences of arson recorded in the 2011-’12 financial year throughout Victoria, with 114 recorded in the Melton Police Service Area. During the 2010-’11 financial year, there were 2899 recorded offences of arson in the state, with 95 recorded in Melton PSA. The maximum penalty for arson causing death in Victoria is 25 years’ imprisonment, while the maximum penalty for intentionally or recklessly causing a bushfire is 15 years’ imprisonment.

Sunshine students star in spooky show PUPILS from a Sunshine North school put on a spooky show featuring some creative costumes at their end-of-year concert last Wednesday. Albion North Primary School (ANPS) students took part in a ‘Spooky Day’ where they dressed up, played instruments and sang to celebrate the music program

they have studied across the past 12 months. Throughout the year the pupils have been studying the art form of African drumming and last week they showed off their talents for the concert’s audience. Youngsters from ANPS also baked and decorated cupcakes to sell at the school performance with all pro-

ceeds going towards the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. It has been a busy year for the school which was also visited by the national Opposition leader last month. Maribyrnong MP and Labor Party leader Bill Shorten staged a live press conference at the school and answered

pupil’s questions about life in Canberra. In addition, the school’s Grade Prep, 1 and 2 classes have been busy planting in the school vegetable garden. Employees from Bunnings in Sunshine visited the ANPS schoolyard and supplied the plants and equipment for the garden.

After Christmas, major construction works will take place on the Regional Rail Link project to improve our rail network and keep Victoria moving. There will be changes to the way you travel during this time. Rail line closures 28 Dec 2013 – 19 Jan 2014

Other changes to public transport will also take place at this time. Please plan ahead and allow extra travel time for your trip. Targeted by thieves Teen’s wish for a smile A PLUMPTON housing estate was the target of thieves earlier this month. The offenders stole a toilet and fittings at a home under construction in Aspire Estate on 4 December and were disturbed shortly afterwards during an unsuccessful attempt to enter a nearby home which was also under construction. On 7 and 8 December a burglary occurred at the recycling facility in Ferris Rd, Melton. Police have described the incident as a professional burglary as the offenders arrived with tools which enabled them to break into locked cabinets and drawers. They spent considerable time on the premises

and stole cash. Meanwhile, on Saturday 7 December, offenders forced open the front door of the Coles Store on Gourlay Road, Caroline Springs, and gained access to the locked cigarette cabinet. All of the items had been removed from the cabinet by staff members but the thieves managed to steal a number of mobile phones. Between 7.30am and 7pm on 9 December offenders broke into a property on Peter Pan Cres, Kurunjang. Jewellery and gaming consoles were stolen. Neighbours saw a small black hatchback vehicle at the premises during the afternoon. Police would like to hear from anyone who has information in

relation to that vehicle or the burglary. And between 11am Saturday, 7 December and 1.30pm Sunday, 8 December offenders entered the rear yard of a residence in Strutt Place, Caroline Springs. They stole a trailer containing a jet ski which they pushed out onto the road and then towed away. Police said the jet ski was a Sea Doo brand, custom painted with a bright red front, white hull and a black and red seat. The trailer is made from galvanised iron, has a jerry can holder and rope winch. Any person with information about this incident or items should contact Melton CIU on 9747 7999.

KON, Anastasia and Hugo were delighted to read a new sustainability guide produced by the Phoenix St Children’s Centre in Sunshine North, which was officially launched last month. Developed with a grant from Brimbank City Council, ‘Save Money, Save the Planet’ will be available throughout the municipality. The guide will also be translated into Vietnamese. The centre’s director Narrelle said it was important to teach children about sustainability, so they could grow up and help save the planet as future generations were born. She said everyone at the centre was delighted with the guide. “We absolutely love it. It’s worked out very well. It’s been a lot of hard work and we are very proud of it,” Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI Narrelle said. 108457

By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A CAROLINE Springs teenager’s smile will be a little brighter this Christmas after she received some much-deserved pampering in the lead-up to the festive season. Callee Petropoulos, 19, and her adoring mother Debbie were recently treated to an indulgent makeover fit for a princess at Wieselmann of Toorak thanks to Make-A-Wish Australia. Callee suffers from aicardi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that is believed to only affect girls and is characterised by the partial or complete absence of a key structure in the brain, called the corpus callosum, the presence of retinal abnormalities, and seizures. Her parents Debbie and Jim received the devastating news when she was only one after she was admitted into hospital with what they thought was the flu. Debbie told Star a doctor saw little Callee sitting up in her cot and immediately realised something was wrong. “We just thought Callee was developing slowly,” she said. “A doctor was walking past and took one look at her and saw a turn in her eye... she had an MRI and we got the devastating news that she was missing the part of her brain that divides the left and right side.” The couple were told their daughter would never walk or talk and would probably only live to the age of 13. Nineteen years on and the Petropoulos family has enjoyed a loving a fulfilling life with Callee and her two older brothers.

Hair stylist Dee Parker-Attwood with Callee and Debbie Petropoulos. Picture: SUPPLIED The teenager surprised everyone when she began walking at four and communicates through her iPad. She attends yearly specialist doctor appointments and takes medications. Last year Callee enjoyed one of her finest moments when she graduated from special school and she now attends an adult day centre where she undertakes literacy and numeracy programs and art courses. “Callee is a very happy girl, a very cheeky girl. She is just happy all the time.” However this year the closeknit family once again received shattering news when Jim was

Science takes a look ahead THINK Ahead, a major new long-term exhibition looks at the possibilities for life in the future through innovations in science, technology, engineering and design. “Think Ahead will completely change the way people experience Scienceworks,” said Scienceworks manager Dr Nurin Veis. “Targeted at eight to 12-year-olds, it’s technologically advanced and thought-provoking.” Developed by Museum Victoria, Think Ahead encourages visitors to think about the future and their involvement in it through topics including medicine and health, cities, the environment, space, music and communication. The exhibition includes the opportunity for visitors to: - Redesign their bodies using cybernetics; - Design their own 3D future city with vertical gardens and flying car factories; - Step inside an immersive space craft experience; - Influence others’ emotions through creating different soundscapes. Think Ahead features world-class innovations from Melbourne, including the Cochlear implant and bionic eye prototype and the two-wheeled electric Holden EN-V, a concept car of the future that can drive its passengers safely to their destination. Robots are a special feature of the exhibition. On public display in Australia for the first time will be two Nao (pronounced “now”) robots - advanced humanoids that will walk, talk, remember faces, dance and play games with visitors, and the Da Vinci Surgical Robot that has been used in more than 200,000 surgeries. “This new experience is totally unique to Scienceworks. “We’ve integrated immersive multimedia technology with hands-on physical interactions, rare artefacts and the work of local innovators,” says senior curator Kate Phillips. “Think Ahead showcases timelines of development across key areas of 20th and 21st century innovations and asks the question: What’s next?” Combining 200 objects from Museum Victoria’s collection and more than 30 items from the wider science and technological community, Think Ahead is the first new permanent exhibition for Scienceworks in seven years. Scienceworks is open daily at 2 Booker St, Spotswood. Pre-purchasing tickets is highly recommended. Call 131102 or visit www.museumvictoria.com.au for more information.

shopping trips, a social game of pool or snooker in The Charlton Room, crafts in the craft room and in particular sharing a few laughs and competition on our new nine hole mini golf.” They both plan on watching a movie with the family when they come to visit and are looking forward to a casual game of chess on the large outdoor chessboard. Diane laughs and says “there are so many things that I could talk about at the resort, we just love it here. “I have already asked others to join us in our

warm and friendly village and we have been made to feel most welcoming. “I would recommend it to everybody and believe that once they come here they won’t want to look anywhere else.” For more information on any of the homes and designs call the Sales Office now on 1800 686 096 to make a time to tour the beautiful resort and display homes with one of the friendly sales staff. The homes are open seven days a week and is located at 7 Taronga Road, Truganina. Visit www.palmlakeresort.com.au.

Sport Jacobs’ army ready By LIAM TWOMEY WESTERN Region Football League division one coach of the year Brett Jacobs is ready to lead the competition into battle. Jacobs has been appointed head coach of the WRFL interleague side for next year’s clash against the Southern Football League. The match will be part of the first metropolitan interleague carnival since 1999 and Jacobs said he was looking forward to being involved in the concept. “I was involved (in representative football) at an under 18 level and played in a game and really liked it,” Jacobs said. “Some of the guys I played with in that side I am still mates with today. It is a really good concept in that regard. “Hopefully the players are keen to get involved. Certainly I think younger guys would be really keen. A few of the older guys who battle to get up week to week might be pushing it and give it a wide berth. If that is the case we certainly understand. “I would hope players were keen and clubs allow them to play and it is well supported.” The next step for Jacobs will be to finalise his support staff for the match which will be played at Visy Park on 29 March. Once that is complete he will look at forming the playing squad. “I would imagine we will be casting a wide net,” he said. “There are a lot of quality players going around and I think we will have a large group to start with and then make cuts each week until we finalise the squad.” Next year’s interleague carnival will see the top six metropolitan leagues square off in one huge day of football. All leagues have been ranked prior to the games with the SFL in sixth place and the WRFL in fifth. Other matches will include the fourth-placed Essendon District Football League taking on the thirdplaced Northern Football League, while the battle for the prestigious number one spot will be contested

Sunshine coach Brett Jacobs will lead the WRFL interleague side. 103727 between the Victorian Amateur Football Association and the Eastern Football League. “The way the format is set up, within two years you could be play-

ing off for the number one ranking,” Jacobs said. “It is very similar to the Country Championships and that is certainly really exciting. This is the first year

it is in but I just think it will get bigger and bigger as each year goes past. That is why we are really hoping the clubs support it and the players get behind the process and put their hands up to be involved.”

BRUCE Mildenhall is the new president of the Western Region Football League. Mildenhall replaces the departing Bill Baarini, who officially stepped down from the position at the league’s annual general meeting earlier this month. Having already been a member of the WRFL board, Mildenhall takes over the top job with a wealth of community experience behind him. He was Footscray’s state MP for 14 years and also held the role of parliamentary secretary for former Premier Steve Bracks. Prior to that, he was a Footscray City Councillor between 1982 and 1991. “Community football is fantastic,” Mildenhall said. “You can play in your local neighbourhood and enjoy the support of your local schools and council and people like that. “It is an exciting time for the league. We have done some hard work around getting our basic structures right the last few years. “We think we are well-placed to really build on that and grow the league in particular in those growth areas in the next couple of years.” Joining Mildenhall on the 2014 board will be vice-president Barry Lovell, treasurer Dominic Drenen and committee members Ross Williamson, Gina Smith and Terry McGarity. Outgoing president Baarini, who Mildenhall credited with doing a fantastic job, will also stay on as a committee member. “I’d like to pay tribute to Bill Baarini for his leadership over the past four years,” Mildenhall said. “He came in at a time when things were a bit unsettled and thankfully we have still got him on the board. The strength of his leadership and his ability to get on with people has brought all the football community together. It is a job well done for Bill.” Despite being the off-season, Mildenhall is already planning to ensure the WRFL remains one of metropolitan football’s premier leagues. “We have recently done another strategy plan for the next three years,” he said. “One of our challenges is that the number of people playing football in the West per head of the population is pretty low compared to other regions. “We want to get as many kids as possible, boys and girls, playing football. “We have built the basics up. We have a lot of Aus-Kick programs happening. It is also about working with the clubs to create programs to help players transition from Aus-Kick into the under nines and so on.”

Many challenges as Jets learn to fly By ADEM SARICAOGLU FOR Western Jets coach Torin Baker, 2013 was as much a learning year for himself as it was for the talented playing group he mentored. Baker took charge of the Jets after the 2012 season and went on to lead them to a finals berth in the TAC Cup this year. But the inherently different role TAC Cup coaches have compared to most of their contemporaries across other leagues provides for a unique set of challenges. For Baker and his coaching staff, the TAC Cup is as much a developmental competition for coaches as it is for players.

“Certainly every year you coach you learn and you develop your views and your philosophies and it’s the same with the whole coaching staff,” Baker explained. “We’ve all had a reasonable level of coaching experience at a variety of different levels. “For all my assistant coaches it was their first year at TAC level, and they’ve all come from VFL backgrounds, so I think from that point of view it was certainly a learning year for most of the staff.” When dealing with a wealth of more than 50 budding AFL hopefuls in a 17-game season, navigating that balance of nurturing each individual while trying to play success-

ful football can be more than a little tricky. “I think it’s a real balancing act,” Baker said. “What you really need to look at is what’s important for the individual, and there’s no doubt we don’t always play our best team or players in certain areas that can help the team. “We play them generally for what’s best for the individual, but then once we’ve decided on that we’ll certainly look to make sure that we’ve got a winning culture.” With year two as the Jets’ head honcho now looming after a solid 2013, Baker is Torin Baker is looking forward to his second year as now looking forward to what his promising coach of the Western Jets in 2014. 97935 new crop of top-agers can deliver next year. Tigers off to flying start WERRIBEE Cricket Club has had a flying start to the 2013-14 season. Their firsts are undefeated and appear firm favourites for the flag. The runs are coming easily too with Matt Dean scoring a century recently in the ones and in the lower grades Dillon Taylor, Jack Gage and UK import MG Brown getting to the magical three figures. Shaun Dean and Tim O’Brien recently played in the VSDCA rep side and while both made a valuable contribution with bat (Dean 35, O’Brien 42) they lost on the second last ball of the game. The last T20 game for the season is on this Tuesday (17 December) at Chirnside Park with a barbecue, so head down and see some of our local cricketing talent in action. I would love to hear from other cricket clubs with details of how you are going in 2014.

Hillside into EDFL attack

“It was a great tournament, I was really happy.” Lanciano will now turn his attention to the Open Men’s Class which

he will compete in next year. Following on from his recent triumph, he is already targeting the Australian Open Men’s Title. 1109988-PB49-13

SUMMER 7 DAY MEMBERSHIP

By ADEM SARICAOGLU HILLSIDE will renew hostilities with arch-rival Taylors Lakes with a home Good Friday game in round three of next year’s Essendon District Football League season. The newly-promoted Sharks are now back in the EDFL’s Division One competition - which in 2014 will feature nine clubs taking part in an 18-round, 16-game schedule with two byes. League general manager Marc Turri said he hoped to see a big crowd at Hillside Reserve for the mid-April local derby. “Both teams were keen to be involved in a feature game,” Turri said. “Given we already had Glenroy and Westmeadows locked into the Anzac Day fixture (in round four), we thought we’d try to run with a Hillside and Taylors Lakes game early in the season on Good Friday.” The Division One stoush will go up against the now traditional Premier Division Good Friday clash between Keilor and Strathmore, which in 2013 drew a bumper crowd at the Mores’ Lebanon Reserve. Next year will be Keilor’s turn to host, but with its Keilor Recreation Reserve base currently undergoing redevelopment, the venue has not yet been confirmed. “Kealba is an option and we’ll also look at other venues (including Keilor Park) - but at this stage indications are that Keilor will be available,” Turri said. Other fixture highlights include a home Anzac Day game for Keilor Park against Coburg Districts in Division Two, while league newcomer Burnside Heights will commence its foray into senior footy at home to East Sunbury. Division Two favourites East Keilor and Moonee Valley will also go head to head in round one. Round one for all three divisions begins on 5 April.

I LOVE the passion people have for their football clubs at all levels of the game from AFL to grassroots. Last week I hosted Inside the Kennel at the Bulldogs and president Peter Gordon spoke about the future of the club with genuine passion and commitment, but tempered with the knowledge and wisdom, that success comes from hard work and planning. Then I interviewed the three draftees to the club. Two eighteen year-olds and a 23 year-old. Matt Fuller, the 23 year-old, cannot get the smile off his face, and rightly so. He thought his AFL dream was gone, and while he was happy to play at SANFL level, he still had the desire to play at the top level. He, like the other two, is now living his dream and good luck to them all. PASSION can also become poison when people become blinded by it. That is when the other p word - paranoia, sets in. I have been taken to task in recent times by a few clubs over my comments both in this column and on SEN. That is fine, I welcome feedback both for and against. I do not profess to have all the answers to the problems of the world, but I am entitled to have an opinion, and if you do not agree with me, that is fine too. It is an opinion, not a fact. I don’t get personal and I don‘t expect it from others. Feel free to challenge my opinions by all means, I welcome that. I HAVE started my summer stint on SEN and you will be hearing a lot of me in the coming weeks on various timeslots during the day. This is the quietest time of year for football news as all clubs, at all levels are holidaying, and all leagues are closed down as well, but it does give the chance for some lesser profile sports to get some exposure. I really enjoy being on air over the summer - it does have its challenges but it is good fun. I want to thank all those readers who have sent emails with events and news during the year. I do appreciate your contribution to this column and hope it continues in the future. CHRIS Byrne and the team at Westpoint Ford have been my sponsor since day one and I value their support and commitment. I am looking forward to being with my family over Christmas. I would like to wish all readers a safe, happy and fun Christmas and look forward to be back in 2014. IF you have any news or events please let me know on email kevin@howdypartnersmedia. com.au and you can follow me on Twitter @ KevinHillier and check out the website howdypartnersmedia.com.au

THERE is no weight too heavy for Karl Lanciano. The Taylors Lakes resident has established himself as a rising star of the Australian power lifting scene. Originally from a bodybuilding and kickboxing background, Lanciano crossed over to the sport with immediate results. “I was always told that I was very strong and I should try a power lifting competition,” he said. “I went to one of the local IBF power lifting competitions and ended up winning my division and the overall men’s event. “From there I competed in the Australian Titles and I was in the under 74kg division class. I ended up placing second in that division.” Based on his outstanding results, Lanciano recently competed at the Oceanic Commonwealth Power Lifting Titles. The championships took place in Auckland, New Zealand and Lanciano represented Australia in the Under 66kg Junior Men’s Division. The 23-year-old was aiming for gold going in to the tournament but he achieved even better than that, breaking a world record. “My first attempt was 225kg and I got that up really easy,” Lanciano said. “I thought that for my second attempt I would just go for the 240kg (world record mark).
