Real estate peak A DOUBLE-storey home in Maribyrnong’s Edgewater Estate achieved the highest property price across the City of Maribyrnong for 2013.

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom property along Cumberland Drive commanded a selling price of $2.15 million in April.

The unique riverside residence, which boasted 180 degree views, was one of 28 houses and two units in the municipality that went under the hammer or was sold privately for more than a million dollars this year.

In Yarraville, 13 homes and one unit topped the $1 million dollar mark, including a property along Pentland Parade that sold for $1.6 million last month.

Other top sales include $1.4 million for Kirk House in Footscray; $1.35 million for a double-fronted Victorian property in Hotham St, Seddon; and $1.05 million for an Edwardian home sitting on a 850-square metre block in Carmichael St, West Footscray.

On the flip side, a Footscray address along Chatham St was the biggest bargain of the year, selling for $154,387 back in May. Figures from the Real Estate In-

stitute of Victoria (REIV) reveal 48 per cent of homes that went on the market across the municipality in 2013 were sold under the hammer.

Enzo Raimondo from the REIV predicts that the property market will see more moderate price growth over 2014.

“November broke the record for the highest number of auctions transacted in a single month with over 4600 auctions in Victoria - surpassing the previous record of 4455 auctions in May 2010,” Mr Raimondo said.

“The REIV estimates total sales in Victoria to be between 100,000 and 110,000 which means that it could be the highest since the 118,300 sales recorded in 2010.

“Most of this growth occurred in the second half of the year and reflects the very strong market in the past few months.

“However with signs of declining clearance rates, price growth is likely to be more moderate next year and potentially slowing around mid-2014.

“The outlook for 2014 remains positive with price and sales growth expected to continue although at a more moderate pace than what we have seen in the past few months.”

By CHARLENE MACAULAY A FORMER Maribyrnong City Council Mayor is challenging incumbent MP Marsha Thomson for the seat of Footscray.

Labor Party member Sel Sanli has confirmed that he has put his hand up for preselection for the seat of Footscray, which has been a safe Labor seat since 1927.

Under party rules, preselection of candidates is determined by a 50-50 split between the vote of local branch members and Labor’s 100-member public office selection committee.

A decision on who will be endorsed for the seat of Footscray is expected to be made by tomorrow.

Mr Sanli was first elected to the council in the 2007 Stony Creek by-election, and he was voted in as mayor in 2010 before unsuccessfully running for a third term in 2012’s council elections.

In May 2009, he was accused of contravening the Electoral Act by providing former Brimbank councillor Ken Capar with Victorian and Commonwealth electoral roll lists.

A Victorian Electoral Commission report later that year ruled against prosecution because of a lack of evidence.

Mr Sanli was also forced to resign his day job as the Labor Party’s IT data manager after the State Government passed the Conflicting Duties bill, which banned councillors from holding jobs as electorate

Banbury is simply best

The father of two said if he was endorsed and elected, he would advocate on the Napthine Government’s TAFE cuts and address transport and health issues in the area.

“After serious consideration and discussion with locals I want to take the opportunity to be the local, vocal, enthusiastic and passionate representative for our community,” Mr Sanli said.

“With my experience in delivering outcomes such as Braybrook sports court, Braybrook Learning Hub, local jobs such as Masters, Super A-Mart

and Bunnings, I believe I am well aware of our community’s needs.”

Meanwhile, Ms Thomson, who has held the seat of Footscray in 2006, is keen to secure another term.

“It’s a democratic party, and we’ll just go through the process,” Ms Thomson told Star.

“I am very keen to do another term. I have unfinished business that I want to see through, and there’s some important projects in Footscray that are important to the people in Footscray, and I want to see them through.

“I want to be part of a Labor team that I think can win in 2014.”

FOOTSCRAY’S Banbury Village is onto a winner.

The former Olympic Tyre Factory site on Barkly Street has taken out the award for best Medium Density Development at the 2013 Victorian Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Awards for Excellence. Banbury Village also received a Commendation for Urban Renewal.

Started in 2009, the $200 million Banbury Village project is currently two-thirds complete and includes a mix of houses, townhouses and apartments, the most expensive of which was sold in 2009 for $804,500.

The development pays homage to the site’s history and Sir Frank Beaurepaire with the use of old manufacturing equipment as installation pieces and the restoration of many iconic elements from the original factory site such as the facades of the heritage buildings.

There is also a Heritage Trail that winds throughout the estate.

Safe on the station Police eyes on break-ups

WHETHER you’re coming home from a long day at work or heading out for a night on the town, Protective Services Officer (PSO) Rachel McCartney is there to help.

The 28-year-old is one of 551 PSOs deployed to 81 train stations across Melbourne’s metropolitan network to make commuting at night that bit safer.

Ms McCartney guards the Yarraville and Newport stations with fellow PSOs between 6pm and the last train.

She is equipped with the same weapons as police and has the authority to shoot as a last resort.

In cases where an offender needs to be arrested, they are placed in a holding cell until police officers can collect them.

Ms McCartney was working as a resolutions manager for Myki and was a well-seasoned commuter when she signed up for the role.

She embarked on the mandatory three months training at the Police Academy in Glen Waverley early last year, where she was briefed on law units, defensive tactics, communication and underwent scenariobased training.

Ms McCartney then completed a few months’ work at city train stations under the guidance of a mentor before being deployed to Yarraville and Newport.

“It’s a challenging role there’s a danger involved, particularly where drugs and alcohol are concerned.

“We have to think on our feet, and possibly use force if it comes down to it, but the first thing is to deal with it with those communication skills.

“It’s proven to be highly rewarding – engaging with members of the public, from all walks of life, and helping to make it free of crime and safe for people to travel.

“I’m always assured by commuters that they now feel safe and we have this constant flow of people that we assist and advise. It always feels like it’s really important for us to be there.”

PSOs are stationed at Footscray, Yarraville, West Footscray and Tottenham train stations.

“That ticket may just be the reminder or the intervention needed to prevent someone being seriously injured or killed in a collision.

“I urge all road users to turn off the distractions and switch on when you are out on the roads.”

Operation Break Up, which will run until 23 December, is the second operation of the Summer Stay road enforcement campaign.

The piano girls

By CHARLENE MACAULAY FOR a piano with a difference, look no further than Footscray’s Gilmore Girls College.

A small group of Year 9 students have spent the past three weeks decorating a piano with a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party theme as part of an international movement called Play Me, I’m Yours.

Play Me, I’m Yours is an

installation artwork by British artist Luke Jerram that places pianos in public places - including parks and cultural centres, outside galleries and markets, on bridges and at train stations for the public to play and enjoy.

All of the pianos are decorated by artists and the local community.

To date, more than 1000 acoustic pianos have been in-

stalled in 38 cities around the world bearing the simple instruction Play Me, I’m Yours.

Art teacher Leslie said Gilmore Girls College was approached by the Arts Centre Melbourne project team to take part.

The piano will be featured on the streets of Melbourne between 10 and 27 January for all to play and enjoy.

By CHARLENE MACAULAY A WEST Footscray man is using a humble pencil sharpener to raise money for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Paul Beattie hopes to swap up enough items to donate at least $5000 to Oxfam, who are running the relief effort.

He was inspired by Canadian Kyle MacDonald’s One Red Paperclip campaign, which saw Mr MacDonald start with a paperclip and continually swap up until he ended up with a house.

“I saw a paperclip at home, and that reminded me of it - but it was an old, bent-up paperclip, so I thought I’d start with a pencil sharpener,” Mr Beattie said.

“It’s gained a bit of momentum.”

The pencil sharpener has been traded for a teddy bear, then a bottle of wine, a vintage dress, an IKEA bookshelf, a hamper, a fridge, an esky that doubles as a bench, and a custom made dining table valued at $2700.

“Hopefully we’ll try to get at least one more item to add to the value a little bit more, then auction it off.”

Mr Beattie started off the swap up on the Inner West Buy, Swap and Sell Facebook page just over a month ago and is thrilled with the response so far.

He has since moved the swap-up to its own website.

YARRAVILLE Gardens will once again be filled with Christmas spirit for the 20th annual Carols in the Gardens later this month.

This year’s free event will be hosted by much-loved Australian stage, television and film actor, Kevin Harrington, and will be a funfilled evening for young and old.

The evening will begin with the traditional community hour featuring performances from a number of local guest artists before the main performance, which includes a mass choir, the Footscray-Yarraville City Band, the Hyde Street Youth Band

and Western Brass, Kelly Williams, Adrian McEniery, Peter Tregear and internationally acclaimed local soprano, Margaret Haggart.

Santa will make a special appearance during the evening, which will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display from 10pm.

By CHARLENE MACAULAY LIKE most children growing up in quiet rural settings, Erica Keen had limited entertainment options.

Luckily, her eastern Tasmanian hamlet encouraged her to get creative - and as an adult, that crafty streak continued.

“I had lots of ideas of things that I wanted to make. I’m someone who has a lot of patience, so I can do a lot of repetitive tasks quite happily and could see myself running a little business from home,” Ms Keen said.

Today, Ms Keen juggles full-time motherhood with her online business Been and Done, which sells a range of homewares made from pre-loved materials such as discarded coffee bags and vintage fabrics.

She sources her materials from a range of outlets, including East African wax prints straight from Africa, coffee sacks from coffee roasters around Melbourne, op shopping and hand-me-downs from friends and family.

“Been and Done was the perfect expression of my creative energy,” Ms Keen said.

“I think about the hands that these resources have passed through - coffee sacks which have travelled the world, handstitched vintage pieces of embroidery, souvenir tea-towels purchased on holidays all over Australia.

“I value having the ability to create products from incredible resources which might otherwise be discarded or unloved.”

Ms Keen also shows off her wares at local markets, and will be exhibiting at this week’s Maribyrnong Makers Twilight Market.

“The first time I visited the Maribyrnong Makers Market I just knew I wanted to be part of it.

“It is such a fabulous showcase of the diversity of handmade items available, and the incredible skills of the designermakers.

“I believe in thinking global and acting local, and the Maribyrnong Makers Market is in my neighbourhood.”

Hyde and Bunbury streets, Footscray 13 December 2013 – 19 January 2014 To enable work for the Regional Rail Link project, the intersection of Hyde and Bunbury streets will be closed from 13 December 2013 to 19 January 2014.

This closure is required to install large steel structures for the new ramps into Footscray railway station from Hyde Street.

Local access to private property on Hyde and Bunbury streets will be maintained, however there will be changes to some on-street car parking. The Hyde Street service lane will become two-way with entry and exit from the Napier Street end.

Pedestrian access will be maintained. The Footscray railway station car park on Hyde Street will remain open.

During the closure, planned and unplanned Metro bus replacement services will temporarily operate from Cowper Street, between Talbot and Wingfield streets, as shown on the map opposite.

After Christmas, major construction works will take place on the Regional Rail Link project to improve our rail network and keep Victoria moving.

Traffic changes - Nicholson Street and Irving Street, Footscray 1 – 5 January 2014 To enable work for the Regional Rail Link project, there will be changes to traffic on Nicholson Street and Irving Street, Footscray.

Irving Street will be reduced to one lane between Albert Street and Trugo Lane from midnight Wednesday 1 January 2014 until 6am Sunday 5 January 2014. Two way traffic will be maintained however delays are expected.

Nicholson Street will be closed between Mechanics Way and Buckley Street from midnight Wednesday 1 January 2014 until 6am Friday 3 January 2014. On street parking will be closed however pedestrian access to local businesses will be maintained.

We suggest parking in the Albert Street car park.

The exhibition includes the opportunity for visitors to: - Redesign their bodies using cybernetics; - Design their own 3D future city with vertical gardens and flying car factories; - Step inside an immersive space craft experience; - Influence others’ emotions through creating different soundscapes.

Think Ahead features world-class innovations from Melbourne, including the Cochlear implant and bionic eye prototype and the two-wheeled electric Holden EN-V, a concept car of the future that can drive its passengers safely to their destination.

Robots are a special feature of the exhibition.

On public display in Australia for the first time will be two Nao (pronounced “now”) robots - advanced humanoids that will walk, talk, remember faces, dance and play games with visitors, and the Da Vinci Surgical Robot that has been used in more than 200,000 surgeries.

“This new experience is totally unique to Scienceworks.

“We’ve integrated immersive multimedia technology with hands-on physical interactions, rare artefacts and the work of local innovators,” says senior curator Kate Phillips.

“Think Ahead showcases timelines of development across key areas of 20th and 21st century innovations and asks the question: What’s next?”

Combining 200 objects from Museum Victoria’s collection and more than 30 items from the wider science and technological community, Think Ahead is the first new permanent exhibition for Scienceworks in seven years.

Merry source of season’s greetings HOLIDAY greetings are a selection of greetings that are often spoken with good intentions to strangers, family, friends, or other people during the months of December and January at Christmas and on New Year’s Day. Some greetings are more prevalent than others, depending on the cultural and religious status of any given area.

Controversy has aroused regarding the phrase “happy holidays” as an alleged attempt to diminish Christmas.

The phrase is often proffered when it is known that the receiver is a Christian or celebrates Christmas.

In the beginning of the 21st century, as Christians in increasingly multi-cultural societies continue becoming more sensitive to and respectful of non-Christians and non-Christian faiths, the phrase

has become somewhat less ubiquitous than it was in the 20th century. (However, the commercialisation of the actual holiday continues unabated.)

The non-religious sometimes use the greeting as well, however in this case its meaning focuses more on the secular aspects of Christmas, rather than the Nativity of Jesus.

Its meanings and variations include “merry Christmas”, the traditionally used by many nations, “merry Xmas”, usually used to avoid the length of “merry Christmas”, with the “X” (sometimes controversially) replacing Christ or even “Feliz Navidad”, which is the Spanish language equivalent of “happy Christmas”, but is frequently used in English context.

“Merry,” derived from the Old English myrige, originally meant merely “pleasant” rather than joyous or jolly as in the phrase “merry month of May”.

Though Christmas has been celebrated since the 4th century AD, the first known usage of any Christmastime greeting, “merry Christmas and a happy new year” thus incorporating two greetings was in an informal letter written by an English admiral in 1699.

The same phrase appeared in the first Christmas card, produced in England in 1843.

The then relatively new term “merry Christmas” figured prominently in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol in 1843.

Sport Squad choices find the best fit

By LIAM TWOMEY THE best junior cricketers in the westerns suburbs have been selected for next year’s Victorian State Championships.

Held in January, the Championships will see the Western Spirit under-14, 16 and 18 teams go head to head with other regions throughout the state.

Western Spirit under-14 assistant coach and selector George Shaw was rapt with the depth of talent in the region.

“We want to make certain that the sides that we have picked are heavily in the mix to make finals,” Shaw said.

“We have certainly gone along those lines to ensure we have picked healthy squads and I can honestly say, in each squad we really could have easily picked up to 20 or 25 boys.

“It was very difficult to get it down to the last 13. It was really just about a balance in some sides and some lads are very unlucky to miss out.”

The Western Spirit program has also been given a boost this season through a greater link with Premier Cricket Club Footscray Edgewater and the Bulldogs Cricket Academy.

Footscray players including Michael Kelly, Lucas Dredge and Michael Hill are all coaching sides, ensuring the West’s rising stars get a firsthand look at what it takes to make it at Premier Cricket level.

Shaw said it was great to have the support of the Bulldogs.

“It is outstanding,” he said.

“What Footscray has done is they have put a fair bit of money into this program and the Bulldogs Academy.

“They have thrown a lot of resources into the coaching and on top of that, they have really made sure the club is in a healthy position to coach all the kids in our own backyard.

“They are being well viewed and well looked after.

From our point of view it is a really good opportunity for the western region to make sure the kids are well coached and well looked after.”

League’s new president

By LIAM TWOMEY BRUCE Mildenhall is the new president of the Western Region Football League.

Mildenhall replaces the departing Bill Baarini, who officially stepped down from the position at the league’s annual general meeting earlier this month.

Having already been a member of the WRFL board, Mildenhall takes over the top job with a wealth of community experience behind him.

He was Footscray’s State MP for 14 years and also held the role of parliamentary secretary for former Premier Steve Bracks.

Prior to that, he was a Footscray City Councillor between 1982 and 1991.

“Community football is fantastic,” Mildenhall said.

“You can play in your local neighbourhood and enjoy the support of your local schools and council and people like that.

“It is an exciting time for the league. We have done some hard work around getting our basic structures right the last few years.

“We think we are well-placed to really build on that and grow the league in particular in those growth areas in the next couple of years.”

Joining Mildenhall on the 2014 board will be vice-president Barry Lovell, treasurer Dominic Drenen and committee members Ross Williamson, Gina Smith and Terry McGarity.

Outgoing president Baarini, who Mildenhall credited with doing a fantastic job, will also stay on as a committee member.

“I’d like to pay tribute to Bill Baarini for his leadership over the past four years,” Mildenhall said.

“He came in at a time when things were a bit unsettled and thankfully we have still got him on the board. The strength of his leadership and his ability to get on with people has brought all the football community together. It is a job well done for Bill.”

Despite being the off-season, Mildenhall is already planning to ensure the WRFL remains one of metropolitan football’s premier leagues.

“We have recently done another strategy plan for the next three years,” he said.

“One of our challenges is that the number of people playing football in the West per head of the population is pretty low compared to other regions.

“We want to get as many kids as possible, boys and girls, playing football.

“We have built the basics up. We have a lot of Aus-Kick programs happening. It is also about working with the clubs to create programs to help players transition from AusKick into the under nines and so on.”

Jacobs’ army ready

By LIAM TWOMEY WESTERN Region Football League division one coach of the year Brett Jacobs is ready to lead the competition into battle.

Jacobs has been appointed head coach of the WRFL interleague side for next year’s clash against the Southern Football League.

The match will be part of the first metropolitan interleague carnival since 1999 and Jacobs said he was looking forward to being involved in the concept.

“I was involved (in representative football) at an under 18 level and played in a game and really liked it,” Jacobs said.

“Some of the guys I played with

in that side I am still mates with today. It is a really good concept in that regard.

“Hopefully the players are keen to get involved. Certainly I think younger guys would be really keen.

A few of the older guys who battle to get up week to week might be pushing it and give it a wide berth.

If that is the case we certainly understand.

“I would hope players were keen and clubs allow them to play and it is well supported.”

The next step for Jacobs will be to finalise his support staff for the match which will be played at Visy Park on 29 March.

Once that is complete he will

look at forming the playing squad.

“I would imagine we will be casting a wide net,” he said.

“There are a lot of quality players going around and I think we will have a large group to start with and then make cuts each week until we finalise the squad.”

Next year’s interleague carnival will see the top six metropolitan leagues square off in one huge day of football.

All leagues have been ranked prior to the games with the SFL in sixth place and the WRFL in fifth.

Other matches will include the fourth-placed Essendon District Football League taking on the thirdplaced Northern Football League,

while the battle for the prestigious number one spot will be contested between the Victorian Amateur Football Association and the Eastern Football League.

“The way the format is set up, within two years you could be playing off for the number one ranking,” Jacobs said.

“It is very similar to the Country Championships and that is certainly really exciting. This is the first year it is in but I just think it will get bigger and bigger as each year goes past. That is why we are really hoping the clubs support it and the players get behind the process and put their hands up to be involved.”

Many challenges as Jets learn to fly

By ADEM SARICAOGLU FOR Western Jets coach Torin Baker, 2013 was as much a learning year for himself as it was for the talented playing group he mentored.

Baker took charge of the Jets after the 2012 season and went on to lead them to a finals berth in the TAC Cup this year.

But the inherently different role TAC Cup coaches have compared to most of their contemporaries across other leagues provides for a unique set of challenges.

For Baker and his coaching staff, the TAC Cup is as much a developmental competition for coaches as it is for players.

“Certainly every year you

coach you learn and you develop your views and your philosophies and it’s the same with the whole coaching staff,” Baker explained.

“We’ve all had a reasonable level of coaching experience at a variety of different levels.

“For all my assistant coaches it was their first year at TAC level, and they’ve all come from VFL backgrounds, so I think from that point of view it was certainly a learning year for most of the staff.”

When dealing with a wealth of more than 50 budding AFL hopefuls in a 17-game season, navigating that balance of nurturing each individual while trying to play successful football

can be more than a little tricky.

“I think it’s a real balancing act,” Baker said.

“What you really need to look at is what’s important for the individual, and there’s no doubt we don’t always play our best team or players in certain areas that can help the team.

“We play them generally for what’s best for the individual, but then once we’ve decided on that we’ll certainly look to make sure that we’ve got a winning culture.”

With year two as the Jets’ head honcho now looming after a solid 2013, Baker is now looking forward to what his promising new crop of top-agers can deliver next year.

I love the passion people have for their football clubs at all levels of the game from AFL to grassroots. Last week I hosted Inside the Kennel at the Bulldogs and President Peter Gordon spoke about the future of the club with genuine passion and commitment, but tempered with the knowledge and wisdom, that success comes from hard work and planning. Then I interviewed the three draftees to the club. Two eighteen year-olds and a 23 year-old. Matt Fuller, the 23 year-old, cannot get the smile off his face, and rightly so. He thought his AFL dream was gone, and while he was happy to play at SANFL level, he still had the desire to play at the top level. He, like the other two, is now living his dream and good luck to them all.

PASSION can also become poison when people become blinded by it. That is when the other p word - paranoia, sets in. I have been taken to task in recent times by a few clubs over my comments both in this column and on SEN. That is fine, I welcome feedback both for and against. I do not profess to have all the answers to the problems of the world, but I am entitled to have an opinion, and if you do not agree with me, that is fine too. It is an opinion, not a fact. I don’t get personal and I don‘t expect it from others. Feel free to challenge my opinions by all means, I welcome that.
