Real estate range By XAVIER SMERDON THERE was a $1.05 million difference between the most expensive and cheapest homes sold in Wyndham this year, according to new figures. Statistics provided to Star by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) show that the most expensive house was sold in Hoppers Crossing and went for $1.175 million. The Leatherwood Drive property was sold by Barry Plant on 4 May this year after being on the market for five years and being handled by seven different agencies. An impressive structure, a description of the house said that it took three years to build, boasts crystal chandeliers and more than 700 downlights. There are seven king-sized bedrooms, a solid timber staircase, four bathrooms, five toilets and enough undercover parking spaces for 14 cars. Rick O’Halloran from Barry Plant Tarneit sold the house and told Star in a different suburb it would have fetched an even higher price tag. “A lot of people would say, ‘why would I wan’t to pay that much for a house in Hoppers Crossing’, but I just think, try and live in something

as palatial as this on the other side of town,” Mr O’Halloran said. “It would cost more than the selling price just to construct a house like this in some other suburbs.” Mr O’Halloran, who currently holds the record for the most expensive houses ever sold in Tarneit, Truganina and Hoppers Crossing, said the Leatherwood Drive house was bought by a man from Blackburn. “He said that he was never going to be able to buy something this big on his side of town, so he sold his house for $850,000 and it was 20 per cent of the size of this house,” he said. According to the REIV’s data, the current median price for a house in Hoppers Crossing is still only $285,000, making the Leatherwood Drive property’s sale price even more impressive. Only three other houses, all of them in Point Cook, broke the $1 million mark this year. By contrast the cheapest house in the municipality was sold in Bellfield Court in Wyndham Vale for just $121,000 on 2 February. The fire damaged house was followed closely by a house in Kookaburra Ave in Werribee which sold for $160,000 on 30 January. CEO of REIV, Enzo Raimondo, said house prices were likely to grow at a slower rate next year.

Who stole 2013? OK, who stole 2013? I know we say it every year but this year has flown and while there have been some big changes, not a lot has really changed. Our Federal representative has changed and as a result our profile as a city has diminished. That will happen when the Prime Minister is your local rep. By and large our political representatives have had little impact on our day to day lives, that is not a criticism, just a fact of life. Let’s be honest, we still have the same major beefs about life in the West. Traffic is still the number one gripe for me and it is getting worse. The inability to get across our city is a real problem, and then, when you try and commute to Melbourne, it goes from bad to worse. The real worry is that no one has a solution (me included). It is not that long ago that moving around different parts of Wyndham was easy, and I was the envy of my work colleagues because I could breeze in to the city in under 30 minutes, now I am lucky if I get out of Hoppers Crossing in that time.

I AM looking forward to Christmas with my family and I hope you and your loved ones have a memorable festive season.

Thief appeals jail term By ALESHA CAPONE A MAN who committed more than 50 crimes in locations including the West has appealed his jail sentence. The Supreme Court of Victoria Court of Appeal recently heard Bradley Berry was sentenced to more than four yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; imprisonment during May this year. He was given a non-parole period of two years and six months after committing 58 offences including theft, obtaining property by deception, attempted armed robbery, handling stolen goods and aggravated assault. The offenderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first charge in the

crime spree happened in June 2012 when Berry stole a womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purse while she was shopping in Hoppers Crossing. Berry went on to steal purses and handbags from people in Altona, Altona Meadows, Caroline Springs, Maribyrnong, Point Cook and Williamstown. Sometimes he was accompanied by a co-accused who would steal the bags while Berry distracted the victim. At one stage, the pair conducted transactions worth more than $3000 with stolen credit cards at Altona, Altona North, Braybrook, Hoppers Crossing, Sydenham, Taylors Lakes

and Werribee stores. Berry was finally captured when Westfield Plaza security staff from recognised him and the co-accused on 27 July last year. When the guards followed the duo outside, Berry produced a large hunting knife. Berry ran away towards a sedan driven by a 67-year-old woman and her 70-year-old husband. Berry opened the carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passenger side door and ordered the woman to drive, but the woman exited the vehicle and her husband pulled on the handbrake to stop the car. Berry jumped out and ran into

the front of another car being driven by a woman and made her stop the vehicle. She trapped Berryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arm in the carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s door frame before he escaped. Berry then attempted to gain entry to another vehicle driven by a grandmother, with her six-year oldgranddaughter and four-year-old grandson inside. Justice Paul Coghlan told the court this failed and police later arrested Berry, before taking him to the Geelong Police Station. Judge Coghlan and two other judges did not reduce Berryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original sentence.

Police eye break-ups By CHARLENE MACAULAY TAKE care when wrapping up your Christmas shopping - Victoria Police will be on the roads and watching. Victoria Police has rolled out Operation Break Up across the state, which is targeting the fatal five road user behaviours which are known causes of road trauma. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said the community could expect to see police at all major shopping hubs and anywhere else where there will be an influx of cars, pedestrians and cyclists. Mr Hill said police would be placing particular focus on driver distraction and seatbelts as we head into the festive season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Police will be in the CBD, on the roads around major shopping centres and patrolling the local shopping strips to make sure all road users do the right things in these areas,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know this time of the year can be really hectic and people have a lot of things on their minds. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a time where we have a lot of our most vulnerable road users, both young and old, on the roads. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That makes it even more important to ensure all drivers remain vigilant and take extra care. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you receive a ticket for using your mobile phone while you are driving, get booked for not wearing a seatbelt or youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re penalised for not crossing the roads correctly, I make no apologies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That ticket may just be the reminder or the intervention needed to prevent someone being seriously injured or killed in a collision.â&#x20AC;?

Ms De Castro is a member of the ensemble, joining famous Aussies Bert Newton, Rob Mills, Todd McKenney and Anthony Callea as they travel Australia singing and

dancing all the unforgettable songs from the hit movie. Having started to pursue her passion of dance at the mere age of four years old, Ms De Castro said being a part of the Grease spectacular had been a highlight for her. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grease is one of those movies Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always watched and always loved, so to be in the show is crazy,â&#x20AC;? Ms De Castro said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always aspired to do musical

theatre or be a professional dancer on stage,â&#x20AC;? she said. She started ballet lessons in Williamstown, before moving to Werribee and continued at a dance school there where she studied the major styles of dance. Ms De Castro made her musical theatre debut in 2012 as an original cast member of the Australian premier of TMLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Chitty Chitty Bang Bangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Multiple thefts POLICE are searching for a woman allegedly involved in multiple thefts from cars and credit card fraud last month. On 16 November the woman left a hotel on Point Cook Rd in Point Cook after 11pm and allegedly stole items from an unlocked car in the car park. Early on the 17 November the same woman, pictured right, allegedly stole a wallet from a car parked on Virgilia Drive in Hoppers Crossing and used a stolen credit card to buy items

from local businesses. Between 11pm on 17 November and 7.30am on 18 No-

vember the woman allegedly stole another purse from a car parked on Hogans Rd in Hoppers Crossing and used a credit card from the purse to make purchases at a Tarneit business. Police have released images of a woman whom they believe may be able to assist them in their enquiries. Care for your pets this Christmas By YASEMIN TALAT AS Christmas fast approaches and celebrations are underway for the festive season, pet owners are being reminded to take extra care of their furry friends. Point Cook Greencross Vet Dr Zoe Sullivan said the silly season could be hazardous to pets across Wyndham. She urged pet owners to take extra precautions to ensure their safety this festive season. “It’s a very exciting time of year, with a lot going on. It’s easy to get swept up in the festivities, but it’s important to be mindful of your pet’s safety,” Dr Sullivan said. Dr Sullivan’s tips include

looking after the nutrition and well-being of pets by feeding them well. “Don’t stuff your pet like a turkey,” Dr Sullivan said. “Avoid fatty foods (like) cooked poultry and ham bones, trimmed steaks and sausages, as (they) can contribute to tummy upsets, gastric obstructions and pancreatitis, a serious problem we see in pets over the festive season,” she said. Chocolate should also be completely avoided, Dr Sullivan said. “Theobromines in chocolate will cause seizures and heart failure,” Dr Sullivan said. “If any is eaten, get your

pet to your vet or emergency clinic where vomiting can be induced. The sooner the chocolate is vomited, the less toxin is absorbed, and the better the chances of survival.” And as the weather heats up Dr Sullivan recommended pets be kept out of the heat. “Avoid long walks during the hottest part of the day, this will help prevent heatstroke,” she said. Dr Sullivan said pets, like humans, could also suffer from sunburn and required sunblock. “Like humans, animals still get burnt through hair. White dogs and cats especially will require sunblock.”

From badminton to boxing By YASEMIN TALAT POINT COOK resident Jing Wu is one step closer to becoming an Olympic Athlete. The 20 year-old is one of 13 Victorians who have made the cut to attend the AIS Sports Draft camp in Canberra. She will be among 38 athletes from around Australia who have been given the opportunity to show if they have what it takes to be a future Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games gold medallist in either boxing or judo. Although admittedly shock-

ed at first, Jing said she was excited by the opportunity. “I thought it would be an interesting opportunity for me and I didn’t have anything to lose from having a go,” Jing said. Jing’s sport of choice is badminton and she has been playing since she was 11. She has taken the opportunity to be a part of the AIS sporttransfer program which will see her training in the medal-rich sport of boxing. This will be her first time ever doing boxing, or any form of contact sport.

“The application asked for athletes who were currently in a non-Olympic sport and who were interested in trying out another sport,” she said. “I’ve always been interested in boxing because my brother joined a boxing gym a few years ago and at home he would teach me a little bit.” “I don’t really know what it would be like but I’m hoping it will be something I’ll enjoy.” If successful during the five day testing at the camp, Jing will have the chance to receive 12 months of coaching to prepare her for boxing.

Puppy love for this calendar girl By YASEMIN TALAT IRAMOO Primary School’s favourite puppy is now a calendar girl. Seeing Eye Puppy Farrow will appear on the February opening of the PawPals Calender, a volunteer based organisation that are raising funds to support volunteer puppy carers. Farrow is in the care of Iramoo Primary School Principal Moira Findlay, and is a much loved member of the school community. The calendar is sold amongst puppy carers and their family and friends, and has been bought by many of the students. “The money that’s raised

from these calendars helps fund all the things to do with the puppy training days,” Ms Findlay said. “I’m very proud of Farrow and she’s grown so much since those calendar photos were taken, she’s quite a big pup now,” she said. “I don’t think there’s anything cuter than a Labrador puppy; the only thing that’s cuter is a Labrador puppy with a Seeing Eye Dog coat on,” Ms Findlay said. Farrow accompanies Ms Findlay to school each day and has been doing so since October 2013. Ms Findlay said the students and staff loved having Farrow

at school and even the extended Werribee community had a chance to meet the pup around town. “I think she is the best known pup in Werribee,” Ms Findlay said. She said when Farrow was being trained on the main street people would often stop to say hello. “Absolutely everywhere I go people ask questions and are very, very welcoming and it is absolutely raising people’s awareness about Seeing Eye Dogs,” Ms Findlay said. Anger over tax ruling By XAVIER SMERDON UP TO 950 Wyndham residents, most of them retirees on pensions, could be made to pay an extra $1200 a year just for living where they do. The Australian Taxation Office recently issued a draft decision on the GST paid by park owners who are managing properties where mobile homes are based. Member for Lalor, Joanne Ryan, urged the Abbott Government to overturn the ruling. “If the ruling goes ahead, park owners will be hit by having to pay double the GST on leased sites,” Ms

Ryan said. “I am concerned that not only would this mean higher costs for park owners, but that these costs will be passed on to residents.” “Mortgage stress and tenancy eviction are already massive issues in Wyndham. This is another housing pressure our community cannot afford.” Bob Purves, who is a permanent resident at Ison Village in Werribee, told Star most of his fellow lifestyle village residents would not be able to afford the extra tax. “(Most) of us here are pensioners, and some of us are on the breadline,” Mr Purves said.

“A lot of people here are on single pensions and this is something we never thought we’d have to pay. Think Ahead features world-class innovations from Melbourne, including the Cochlear implant and bionic eye prototype and the two-wheeled electric Holden EN-V, a concept car of the future that can drive its passengers safely to their destination. Robots are a special feature of the exhibition. On public display in Australia for the first time will be two Nao (pronounced “now”) robots - advanced humanoids that will walk, talk, remember faces, dance and play games with visitors, and the Da Vinci Surgical Robot that has been used in more than 200,000 surgeries. “This new experience is totally unique to Scienceworks. “We’ve integrated immersive multimedia technology with hands-on physical interactions, rare artefacts and the work of local innovators,” says senior curator Kate Phillips. “Think Ahead showcases timelines of development across key areas of 20th and 21st century innovations and asks the question: What’s next?” Combining 200 objects from Museum Victoria’s collection and more than 30 items from the wider science and technological community, Think Ahead is the first new permanent exhibition for Scienceworks in seven years. Songs of Christmas By YASEMIN TALAT STUDENTS from Manorvale Primary School are spreading Christmas joy through song this week when they perform for the community. The school’s choir group, which is made up of 41 students, will perform a mix of classic and much-loved Christmas songs at Werribee West Kindergarten, Tarneit West Village and Heathglen Retirement Village this week. With the support of their

teachers Mrs Robyn Hawking and Mr Glenn Hunter, they have been performing around Wyndham every Christmas for the last four years. “We do this every year in fourth term, the purpose is community links and spreading the Christmas spirit,” Mrs Hawking said. Mrs Hawking said many groups across Wyndham, especially several aged care facilities, enjoyed having the children perform for them. “At the aged care facilities

the children really understand the spirit of giving and everyone really loves them,” Mrs Hawking said. “The kinder children love it too, they dance along at the same time,” she said. “It’s such a wonderful community spirit.” Mrs Hawking said the choir’s visits were only made possible by the donation of a bus from WESTRANS and therefore the spirit of giving could be shared by all.

Merry source of season’s greetings has become somewhat less ubiquitous than it was in the 20th century. (However, the commercialisation of the actual holiday continues unabated.) The non-religious sometimes use the greeting as well, however in this case its meaning focuses more on the secular aspects of Christmas, rather than the Nativity of Jesus. Its meanings and variations include “merry Christmas”, the traditionally used by many nations, “merry Xmas”, usually used to avoid the length of “merry Christmas”, with the “X” (sometimes controversially) replacing Christ or even “Feliz Navidad”, which is the Spanish language equivalent of “happy Christmas”, but is frequently used in English context. As of 2005, this greeting still remains popular among countries

with large Christian populations, including Australia. “Merry,” derived from the Old English myrige, originally meant merely “pleasant” rather than joyous or jolly as in the phrase “merry month of May”. Though Christmas has been celebrated since the 4th century AD, the first known usage of any Christmastime greeting, “merry Christmas and a happy new year” thus incorporating two greetings was in an informal letter written by an English admiral in 1699. The same phrase appeared in the first Christmas card, produced in England in 1843. The then relatively new term “merry Christmas” figured prominently in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol in 1843.

PLAYING in Wednesday’s Australian Baseball League All Star Game is going to be that little bit more special for Darryl George. The young gun shortstop, currently plying his trade with both the Melbourne Aces and the Tampa Bay Rays in the US, is very much looking forward to representing Australia against the World All Stars. This year’s ABL showpiece will be taking place at the Aces’ Melbourne Ballpark in Altona, which for George, is right on his own doorstep. “I (grew up) in Hoppers Crossing, just around the corner,” George said. “I used to come down here and watch the old ABL back when that was on, so this is pretty much my backyard.” At 20 years of age, George still has the world at his feet. And considering his already impressive resume - donning the green and gold in the familiar surrounds of his home ballpark will be a massive honour for George. “To represent my country is something growing up as a kid I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m very grateful to be given that opportunity,” he said. “It’s just cool. It’s always an honour to be able to represent your country, especially in front of friends and family as well being so close to home. “So I’m looking forward to the opportunity and I’m sure it will be a fun night as well.” Since signing with the Rays in 2010, baseball has become a 24/7 gig for George. He was just a teenager when the Rays first snapped him up after representing Victoria as part of the Major League Baseball Academy program on the Gold Coast. Naturally, it took George a bit of time to adjust to his drastically new lifestyle, but he insists it does get easier with experience. “I think definitely in the first year the homesickness is huge,” George explained. “You’re 18-years-old, fresh out of high school

Sport Jacobs’ army ready By LIAM TWOMEY WESTERN Region Football League Division One coach of the year Brett Jacobs is ready to lead the competition into battle. Jacobs has been appointed head coach of the WRFL interleague side for next year’s clash against the Southern Football League. The match will be part of the first metropolitan interleague carnival since 1999 and Jacobs said he was looking forward to being involved in the concept. “I was involved (in representative football) at an under 18 level and played in a game and really liked it,” Jacobs said. “Some of the guys I played with in that side I am still mates with today. It is a really good concept in that regard. “Hopefully the players are keen to get involved. Certainly I think younger guys would be really keen. A few of the older guys who battle to get up week to week might be pushing it and give it a wide berth. If that is the case we certainly understand. “I would hope players were keen and clubs allow them to play and it is well supported.” The next step for Jacobs will be to finalise his support staff for the match which will be played at Visy Park on 29 March. Once that is complete he will look at forming the playing squad. “I would imagine we will be casting a wide net,” he said. “There are a lot of quality players going around and I think we will have a large group to start with and then make cuts each week until we finalise the squad.” Next year’s interleague carnival will see the top six metropolitan leagues square off in one huge day of football. All leagues have been ranked prior to the games with the SFL in sixth place and the WRFL in fifth. Other matches will include the fourth-placed Essendon District

it is in but I just think it will get bigger and bigger as each year goes past. “That is why we are really hoping the clubs support it and the players get behind the process and put their hands up to be involved.”

FOR Western Jets coach Torin Baker, 2013 was as much a learning year for himself as it was for the talented playing group he mentored. Baker took charge of the Jets after the 2012 season and went on to lead them to a finals berth in the TAC Cup this year. But the inherently different role TAC Cup coaches have compared to most of their contemporaries across other leagues provides for a unique set of challenges. For Baker and his coaching staff, the TAC Cup is as much a developmental competition for coaches as it is for players. “Certainly every year you coach you learn and you develop your views and your philosophies and it’s the same with the whole coaching staff,” Baker explained. “We’ve all had a reasonable level of coaching experience at a variety of different levels. “For all my assistant coaches it was their first year at TAC level, and they’ve all come from VFL backgrounds, so I think from that point of view it was certainly a learning year for most of the staff.” When dealing with a wealth of more than 50 budding AFL hopefuls in a 17-game season, navigating that balance of nurturing each individual while trying to play successful football can be more than a little tricky. “I think it’s a real balancing act,” Baker said. “What you really need to look at is what’s important for the individual, and there’s no doubt we don’t always play our best team or players in certain areas that can help the team. “We play them generally for what’s best for the individual, but then once we’ve decided on that we’ll certainly look to make sure that we’ve got a winning culture.” Like all TAC Cup clubs, success is measured both on the scoreboard and at draft time in November. But as shown by the Eastern Ranges in 2013, getting it right on the field has its advantages come November. For Baker, nurturing his players as natural competitors is important for both player and club. “We know that’s part of football,” he said. “We know if we’ve got a team that’s highly successful with results that it’s more likely going to lead to whether it’s a happy environment or more players get opportunities at further levels.”

Bees get busy on league By ADEM SARICAOGLU WERRIBEE City boss Nino Ragusa has welcomed Victoria’s National Premier League rollout with open arms. The Bees have been keener than most to be part of the new Football Federation Australia initiative that will replace the Victorian Premier League and State League structure in 2014. The club was one of the applicants of the original Football Federation Victoria model that faced stiff opposition from a large portion of the footballing community for much of the 2013 season. But now that the clubs and FFV have finally come together and agreed upon the implementation of the NPL for next year, Ragusa and his club can finally fulfil an end goal nearly three years in the making. “I’m relieved that now we have some clear direction going forward, and I think the club is relieved we can start planning,” Ragusa said. “Personally I think Victorian football needs a massive change at state level and Premier League level, and I think this NPL is a good thing going forward.” Since Ragusa took charge, Werribee City has been readying itself for the NPL.

being rolled out in Victoria from the composition of the squad, the way we’re trying to set up the club, our under-21s and our coaching staff right across the board. “We still have a long way to go but that was always the direction, and at the same time we still tried to push on the park to get promoted naturally just in case it didn’t go through.” Ragusa said club officials will meet next week in preparation for their new application.

The runs are coming easily too with Matt Dean scoring a century recently in the ones and in the lower grades Dillon Taylor, Jack Gage and UK import MG Brown getting to the magical three figures. Shaun Dean and Tim O’Brien recently played in the VSDCA rep side and while both made a valuable contribution with bat (Dean 35, O’Brien 42) they lost on the second last ball of the game. The last T20 game for the season is on this Tuesday (17 December) at Chirnside Park with a BBQ, so head down and see some of our local cricketing talent in action. I would love to hear from other cricket clubs with details of how you are going in 2014. I love the passion people have for their football clubs at all levels of the game from AFL to grassroots. Last week I hosted Inside the Kennel at the Bulldogs and President Peter Gordon spoke about the future of the club with genuine passion and commitment, but tempered with the knowledge and wisdom, that success comes from hard work and planning. Then I interviewed the three draftees to the club. Two eighteen year-olds and a 23 yearold. Matt Fuller, the 23 year-old, cannot get the smile off his face, and rightly so. He thought his AFL dream was gone, and while he was happy to play at SANFL level, he still had the desire to play at the top level. He, like the other two, is now living his dream and good luck to them all.
