Child care fight AN ANGRY group of residents flooded the council chambers last week wielding protest signs with a strong message for the council about its decision to outsource its two early learning centres. Hobsons Bay City Council made a decision to contract out the management of the Altona Meadows and Altona North early learning centres for 170 children. The decision to outsource was made in-camera, or behind closed doors. Before the council meeting last Tuesday, concerned parents met with Australia Services Union (ASU) organisers, before making their way to the council chambers. Cr Luba Grigorovitch moved an urgent motion to defer the outsourcing pending “proper and thorough community consultation”. She went on to say that given most childcare workers were women, a wage cut would be “a slap in the face for 52 per cent of the population”. The motion was met with loud applause from the gallery.

Councillors Colleen Gates and Peter Hemphill voted with Mayor Sandra Wilson to continue plans to contract out the centres. Cr Paul Morgan abstained from voting and Angela Altair had left earlier due to family commitments. The council cited increasing costs and the Early Learning Framework and National Competition policy as the reason for the outsourcing. “In keeping with our responsibility as officers and council to deliver value for money and consideration of good utilisation of ratepayer money, the decision was taken,” Director Community Services Peter Hunt said. Concerned parent Michael Holtz, whose family has used the Altona North centre for the past eight years, was disappointed with the lack of community consultation. “I am disappointed with Hobsons Bay Council’s refusal to engage the community and staff in consultation as required by their own policies.” Mr Holtz said he was concerned that the high level of care wouldn’t be sustained due to the outsourcing and the potential loss of long-term staff.

$1 million clean-up

Pet care for the season

By NICOLE VALICEK

By NICOLE VALICEK DOG and cat owners are being urged to be careful with numerous emergencies, from snakebites to bait poisoning recorded at Lort Smith Animal Hospital over the last few weeks. Head Veterinarian, Inpatients Dr Andrew Kapsis said Melbourne’s chaotic weather over the last few weeks had led to a run of “seasonal” pet emergencies. “The very hot weather seems to have stimulated a lot of snake activity,” he said. “The Lort has had 10 snakebite cases in the last two weeks, and other clinics are reporting a similar influx.” He said cats had been more commonly the victims of snakebites than dogs this season, but vets are warning people to be alert when walking their dogs. Atlona resident Caitlin Flett almost lost her cat Donavan to a snake bite recently after he disappeared for a day and returned weak and injured. “I immediately thought he might have been poisoned and took him to the animal hospital.” Donavan was bitten by a snake and given double antivenom. He started recovering overnight, but sadly many animals

We thought he was going to die.” Dr Kapsis said people could reduce the chance of their pet suffering from being bitten by: Tidying up the backyard and reducing the number of places where snakes may hide, such as in long grass or underneath metal and timber scraps, Controlling vermin such as rats or mice that may attract

snakes, and dogs on leads during · Keeping walks, particularly near long grass or bushland or creeks. He said it was also important for owners to be careful using snail bait poison. “Make sure pets can’t get at the snail bait at all and don’t be fooled into thinking that covering up a pile of pellets will be enough to deter a curious dog,” he said.

HOBSONS Bay City Council will spend $1 million to clean up Jack Madigan Reserve. The reserve, on the corner of Challis and Mason streets, Newport was fenced off eight years ago due to land subsidence and contamination. The council has awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of the Jack Madigan Reserve to Entracon Civil Pty Ltd. The site will be rehabilitated with respect to health and environmental risks to ensure it can be used for public recreation. Landscaping works will follow the completion of the site’s rehabilitation. Transition Hobsons Bay and the local Newport community have fought to remove the contaminants from the reserve and for the land to be reinstated for recreational use since earlier this year. Cr Peter Hemphill said it had been an ongoing project that required a lot of “investigative work” with the co-operation of the Environmental Protection Authority. “This is really the start of a lengthy clean-up process,” he said. Cr Peter Morgan said the problem had “plagued” the council and Williamstown community for the past 30 years. “It’s good to see we’re finally getting around to solving this problem and fixing it up and returning it to community use.” The Jack Madigan Reserve was used for oil storage by the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. It was then used as a tip for Hobsons Bay’s solid waste and later converted to a reserve named after a Hobsons Bay Councillor. The council conducted “rigorous” soil tests at the reserve since 2005 which showed the presence of contaminated material at the site, including asbestos and small quantities of gas. Large holes of up to five metres were also detected around the perimeter of the original underground fuel tanks. The investigations conducted by independent environmental auditors and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) were complete in April 2013. The audit found the site does not pose a health risk to the community in its current state as the gas release is minimal, the asbestos has been cleaned and the contaminated soil capped.

HOBSONS Bay City Council will advise the Minister for Environment and Primary Industry of the findings from a trial of the rotating screen trommel for separating sand from seaweed. The trial was conducted in May 2011 and found that the trommel could remove approximately 30 per cent of sand from seaweed in order to provide a more marketable product for recycling. As a shaker plate can remove up to 90 per cent of sand, the seaweed recycling factory in Williamstown, run by Organic Technology Commercialisation, will install a shaker plate and use the trommel as a complimentary strategy.

Station parking trial By NICOLE VALICEK ANOTHER 40-plus car parks will be added to Laverton Station during a trial to reduce its long-running commuter parking woes. Last week the council decided to trial a resident parking permit zone with a capacity for approximately 45 car spaces at Laverton Station. The parking will be located on the railway side of Railway Avenue, Laverton from east of the railway pedestrian overpass. The trial is a response to resident concerns regarding an increase in commuter parking. A two-hour parking limit cur-

rently exists, with a resident parking permit exception on the south side of Railway Avenue. Many commuters travel to Laverton to catch their train because it is in Zone 1, while nearby Aircraft station is in Zone 2. Commuters report that the station’s 1000 car park capacity fills up by 7.30am, forcing them to park up to 1.5 kilometres away, often illegally or unsafely. Cr Colleen Gates said since its construction Laverton station car parking had posed a challenge for commuters and residents living around the station.

“That is an inadvertent cry for help to the State Government. In the meantime we’re hoping to provide some relief for our own residents who have been dealing with this problem for three years now. “It is a trial - we will be looking for constructive feedback from commuters on how it will impact their travel and hope we can work with other departments. As part of the trial the council will erect bollards for 75 metres on the south side of Maher Rd west of Bladin St to stop cars from parking on the adjoining railway reserve. The council will also ask the Department of Education and Early

Childhood Development to secure the access gate at the former Laverton Primary School site to manage emerging safety issues. According to reports, commuters have taken over the school grounds and are causing road and pedestrian hazards. “There’s been significant discussion with local police and the council around safety associated with parking in the area, Cr Gates said. Cr Luba Grigorovitch predicts that the new spaces will be filled “instantaneously and that more space swill be made available in the future.

Volunteers set the mark By NICOLE VALICEK TWO Williamstown volunteers have set a new milestone, with each giving 12,500 hours of their time to Scienceworks over two decades. Tom Brereton, 72, and Vic Wilks, 78, set the new milestone at Museum Victoria through their extraordinary contribution over the past 21 years, surpassing all previous records on file. But while they are grateful for the recognition, they insist they do not volunteer for adulation. “From day one it’s been about making a difference in the community, Vic said. “That’s what it’s about for all volunteers. It’s an opportunity to give something back. “There’s always something of interested going on and it’s a good group of people to work with. Volunteering gives Tom, who uses a wheelchair, the opportunity to retain an active lifestyle. “It means you don’t wake in the morning and say what am I going to do today. Tom said he also wanted to set an example for other young paraplegics. “Unconsciously I’m showing our visitors I’m sitting down in wheel chair and still active and involved with the public. “That’s important for the younger generation of wheelchair people who feel they can’t get involved. Vic can usually be found in Sportsworks, while Tom enjoys taking groups on tours through the pumping station or collection store. They both volunteer two days a week, and their other duties include hosting school groups and assisting with sleepovers. Tom and Vic were both presented with engraved gold watches as recognition for their voluntary commitment, the hours of which amount to seven years of full-time work.

Dog off-leash area for trial HOBSONS Bay City Council has agreed to trial an off-leash dog walking area in Brooklyn. The off-leash dog walking area will be established at the Lynch Rd Reserve for a trial period of six months. That means dogs will have the freedom of running without constraint, allowing them to play, sniff, chase, roll and romp to their heart’s content. According to the council the trial should be implemented before Christmas, with temporary signage installed on-site. Cr Tony Briffa endorsed the trial. “I am, as a dog owner, concerned about offleash areas and the risks to dogs but it’s important that we do have off-leash areas and I’m very pleased that we’re doing this as a trial, he said. There are currently more than 15 dog off-leash areas in the municipality, including a popular one at Altona Beach - between Romawi and Mount Streets. Cr Colleen Gates said the dog off-leash areas across the municipality were very popular among dog owners. “I will be looking forward to seeing this trial and potential installation of a permanent dog offleash area, she said. “(This) means dog owners in that part of the municipality will not have to put their dogs in cars and drive them down to the beach just to give them an extended run. A further report will be presented to the council next year before a decision is made whether the site is secured as a permanent off-leash area. The assessment will depend largely on community feedback.

Going for gold By NICOLE VALICEK TWO Altona Meadows students have been awarded the prestigious Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Courtney Fox and Elizabeth McNair were among 99 young Victorians who were presented with the award at Government House last Wednesday. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is one of the world’s leading achievement awards for young people. It has three levels of achievement - gold, silver and bronze - with gold being the hardest to attain. Gold Awardees undertake more than 10,000 hours in activities they

themselves choose in five different areas: physical recreation, skill, service, adventurous journey and a residential project. Both Courtney and Elizabeth tackled the Gillespie Pass hike in New Zealand as part of their award challenge. “We were the first all-girls group to get over the pass from our school. It’s a massive feeling of accomplishment and I know I can do anything in the world, if I work hard enough,” Courtney said. Elizabeth said that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award provided the opportunity to learn essential life skills.

As part of her service she worked with special needs children. “This award has shown me what I want to do in the future,” she said. “I encourage everyone to do it ... you learn a lot about yourself.” Courtney said the award allowed her to get more involved in her community and her ability to commit to a task. “It shows we had a three-year commitment - a lot of people dropped out I still kept going on to the gold.” Both girls agree finishing the award gave them a great sense of achievement.

Cops blitz By CHARLENE MACAULAY TAKE care when wrapping up your Christmas shopping - Victoria Police will be on the roads and watching. Victoria Police has rolled out Operation Break Up across the state, which is targeting the fatal five road user behaviours which are known causes of road trauma. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said the community could expect to see police at all major shopping hubs and anywhere else where there will be an influx of cars, pedestrians and cyclists. Asst Comm Hill said police would be placing particular

focus on driver distraction and seatbelts as we head into the festive season. “Police will be in the CBD, on the roads around major shopping centres and patrolling the local shopping strips to make sure all road users do the right things in these areas,” he said. “We know this time of the year can be really hectic and people have a lot of things on their minds. “But it’s also a time where we have a lot of our most vulnerable road users, both young and old, on the roads. “That makes it even more important to ensure all drivers remain vigilant and take extra care.

“If you receive a ticket for using your mobile phone while you are driving, get booked for not wearing a seatbelt or you’re penalised for not crossing the roads correctly, I make no apologies. “That ticket may just be the reminder or the intervention needed to prevent someone being seriously injured or killed in a collision. “I urge all road users to turn off the distractions and switch on when you are out on the roads.” Operation Break Up, which will run until 23 December, is the second operation of the Summer Stay road enforcement campaign.

Williamstown Yoga and Meditation Principal Fiona Hyde celebrated the facility’s 20th Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI birthday. 111942

She’s a veteran of the mat By NICOLE VALICEK THE OLDEST yoga school in the Western Suburbs has provided a place for young and old to learn and meditate for the last two decades. Williamstown Yoga and Meditation celebrates its 20th birthday this year. Principal of the centre Fiona Hyde said the centre was so successful because it did not exclude anybody. “No-one is discriminated against, no-one is turned away - from babies to 80-year-old people, we’re open to whole community,” she said. Ms Hyde has taught at the

centre for the past 17 years learning from her first teacher and former partner Susanne Calman who started the centre in 1993. And Susanne learnt from her mother and Williamstown resident Bette Calman, who holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest yoga teacher in the world. Ms Hyde said the centre was a place people could escape the hustle and get in touch with themselves. “We are so overstimulated in the West from mobile phones, computers, people are so exhausted when they come to yoga it’s time to stop and be

still, sit with themselves, get to know themselves.” Another arm of the centre is its therapeutic yoga which works with people with cancer, mental health, anxiety and depression. “We’re trying to teach an authentic yoga which works on all levels including physical, mental, and emotional.” She says yoga is not just something that is done on a mat but can become a way of life. “A lot of yoga is about body beautiful. All of our teachers were all really interested in mental health and emotional health, not just physical health.”

Did it Hue’s way By NICOLE VALICEK BAYSIDE College Student Hue Man Dang couldn’t wait two years to experience university life, so she took it in her own hands to make it happen. The Year 10 student was among 1800 successful recipients of the Kwong Lee Young Scholar’s Program. The University of Melbourne program recognises high achieving Year 10 Victoria students and is designed to give them a taste of university life while still at school. The 16-year-old humanitarian, history and science buff wants to study bio medicine

at the university and saw the scholarship as a pathway to her dream. “I’m not the type of person that waits for opportunities - I go and find them myself,” she said. In 2014 and 2015 Hue Man will participate in a tailored program of events and activities which will support and enhance her studies. She will have access to the university library tailored Year 12 VCE subject lectures and use of a dedicated portal on the University of Melbourne website. Hue Man said she was overjoyed to be selected.

“I’m most looking forward to everything. I’m just excited about everything.” “My school was supportive and my teachers pushed me to that limit which has helped me get the award as well.” Bayside College Community and International Program Co-ordinator Tracy James said the school was proud of Hue Man and Tim Lilley who was also a recipient of the scholarship. “I am sure Hue will not only greatly benefit from the scholarship but will also make a very positive addition to Melbourne University now and in the future.”

YOUNG adventurers will have an opportunity to learn about the marine environment as part of Parks Victoria’s Junior Ranger program this summer. The Junior Ranger program is aimed at school aged children six to 12 who enjoy getting outdoors to explore nature and animals. Kids can enjoy a number of activities at Jawbone Marine Sanctuary in Williamstown on 7 and 8 January, all of which are designed to introduce young adventurers to the marine environment. Some of these activities include Rockpool Ramble - a hands-on exploration of rock pools led by rangers; Bush Detective- children become wildlife detectives using their senses to search for and identify clues left by animals and Ponding

- where children learn about water health and conservation. There are self-guided and rangerled activities. Junior Ranger Program Co-ordinator Elle Wolfhagen said junior rangers would be entertained and inspired by a program that celebrated play in the great outdoors. “Kids who take part in the Junior Ranger program have fun while learning about the importance of preserving parks for the future, and what they can do to help,” she said. Kids must be accompanied by an adult and those taking part are reminded to bring sun protection and sturdy footwear on the day. Werribee Park will also host Junior Ranger activities from 11 January. God is back By NICOLE VALICEK WILLIAMSTOWN Church of Christ has joined thousands of churches across the world in a movement to take back the true meaning of Christmas. Church Minister Megan Jung said The Advent Conspiracy movement asked people to think about the true meaning of Christmas. “December usually is a time of people rushing around, commercialism and consumerism that sometimes takes away from what the season is really about,” she said. Mrs Jung said during the weeks leading up to Christmas people were encouraged

to spend less and instead redirect their money to helping the needy and spend more time with loved ones. “There’s a sense among our church this is necessary, it’s so easy to get so caught up that you miss the point of Christmas which is something felt both by the church and the community at large. “There is a lot of God to be found in Christmas and what it really means, wouldn’t it be great if we could focus on that and come back to that.” Mrs Jung said they were encouraging people to think about the money spent during Christmas and its true value, includ-

ix35

ing giving and family. Three weeks ago it was predicted Australians would spend 30 billion on Christmas this year. “We’re not saying giving and gift giving is wrong, but maybe giving one less gift and putting that money to overseas aid.” She said the movement also encouraged people to slow down during the hectic shop ’til you drop and take time to spend with loved ones. “Wouldn’t it be great to reclaim Christmas in a way that is joy-filled and a delight and fun and something we look forward to rather than wish it was over.”

Season’s Greetings

Merry source of season’s greetings HOLIDAY greetings are a selection of greetings that are often spoken with good intentions to strangers, family, friends, or other people during the months of December and January at Christmas and on New Year’s Day. Some greetings are more prevalent than others, depending on the cultural and religious status of any given area. Controversy has aroused regarding the phrase “happy holidays” as an alleged attempt to diminish Christmas. The phrase is often proffered when it is known that the receiver is a Christian or celebrates Christmas. In the beginning of the 21st century, as Christians in increasingly multi-cultural societies continue becoming more sensitive to and respectful of non-Christians and non-Christian faiths, the phrase

has become somewhat less ubiquitous than it was in the 20th century. (However, the commercialisation of the actual holiday continues unabated.) The non-religious sometimes use the greeting as well, however in this case its meaning focuses more on the secular aspects of Christmas, rather than the Nativity of Jesus. Its meanings and variations include “merry Christmas”, the traditionally used by many nations, “merry Xmas”, usually used to avoid the length of “merry Christmas”, with the “X” (sometimes controversially) replacing Christ or even “Feliz Navidad”, which is the Spanish language equivalent of “happy Christmas”, but is frequently used in English context. As of 2005, this greeting still remains popular among countries

Season's Greetings

with large Christian populations, including Australia. “Merry,” derived from the Old English myrige, originally meant merely “pleasant” rather than joyous or jolly as in the phrase “merry month of May”. Though Christmas has been celebrated since the 4th century AD, the first known usage of any Christmastime greeting, “merry Christmas and a happy new year” thus incorporating two greetings was in an informal letter written by an English admiral in 1699. The same phrase appeared in the first Christmas card, produced in England in 1843. The then relatively new term “merry Christmas” figured prominently in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol in 1843.

Merry Christmas is used as a greeting in the holiday season, but how did it come about?

Science takes a look ahead THINK Ahead, a major new long-term exhibition looks at the possibilities for life in the future through innovations in science, technology, engineering and design. “Think Ahead will completely change the way people experience Scienceworks,” said Scienceworks manager Dr Nurin Veis. “Targeted at eight to 12-year-olds, it’s technologically advanced and thought-provoking.” Developed by Museum Victoria, Think Ahead encourages visitors to think about the future and their involvement in it through topics including medicine and health, cities, the environment, space, music and communication. The exhibition includes the opportunity for visitors to: - Redesign their bodies using cybernetics; - Design their own 3D future city with vertical gardens and flying car factories; - Step inside an immersive space craft experience; - Influence others’ emotions through creating different soundscapes. Think Ahead features world-class innovations from Melbourne, including the Cochlear implant and bionic eye prototype and the two-wheeled electric Holden EN-V, a concept car of the future that can drive its passengers safely to their destination. Robots are a special feature of the exhibition. On public display in Australia for the first time will be two Nao (pronounced “now”) robots - advanced humanoids that will walk, talk, remember faces, dance and play games with visitors, and the Da Vinci Surgical Robot that has been used in more than 200,000 surgeries. “This new experience is totally unique to Scienceworks. “We’ve integrated immersive multimedia technology with hands-on physical interactions, rare artefacts and the work of local innovators,” says senior curator Kate Phillips. “Think Ahead showcases timelines of development across key areas of 20th and 21st century innovations and asks the question: What’s next?” Combining 200 objects from Museum Victoria’s collection and more than 30 items from the wider science and technological community, Think Ahead is the first new permanent exhibition for Scienceworks in seven years. Scienceworks is open daily at 2 Booker St, Spotswood. Pre-purchasing tickets is highly recommended. Call 131102 or visit www.museumvictoria.com.au for more information.

THERE is a certain magic about the old steam locomotives that stirs the imagination of people of all ages and from all walks of life and is a great idea for a school holiday activity. The evocative sounds of the engine chugging, huffing and puffing as it hauls its load across the countryside, and the unmistakable sound of its whistle - are indeed unique. Sport Lions remain out of form By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Lions of Melton have not quite been their usual selves in sub-district cricket so far this summer. The reigning VSDCA South-West premier and perennial contender has not tasted victory since its very first outing of the season - a 10-run one-day win over Yarraville. Four losses have followed since that opening round triumph back in October, but middle order batsman Jeremy Liddy insists team morale is still good at MacPherson Park. “That’s been really disappointing but we can’t change the past,” Liddy said. “We’ve just got to keep fighting and hopefully things will go our way after Christmas or in the next round (away to Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows), because we don’t think we’re too far away.” Melton’s most recent loss to Altona was its third one-wicket defeat in as many games. Though poor luck and the void left behind by injured star batsman Mick Allen may well be contributing factors in that streak, Liddy believes the Lions’ batting line-up needs to match the efforts of their bowling attack so far this season. “I think 200 was a reasonable score last weekend against Altona but they obviously out-batted us and got across the line,” Liddy said. “So I think the bowling unit’s probably been out-performing the batters at this stage. “But John Varchione stepped up against Altona with 94, so we’ll be looking for more of that from our top four for the rest of the season.” Despite Melton’s current standing of 11th on the East-West table, Liddy is confident his Lions

Melton’s batting needs to improve if the Lions hope to play in the finals later this summer. 107216 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI can claw their way back into the top six come finals time. Liddy also backed Melton captain-coach Nathan Geisler - who replaced on-field coach Duncan Harrison after the 2012-’13 summer - to lead the Lions back into finals contention in the second half of the season. “Nathan Geisler’s doing really well,” Liddy said. “He knows all the guys and we’re training just as hard as we did in previous years, so it’s just on the track. “Off the field everything’s going well, it’s just on the track we can’t get across the line or get that 10th wicket.

Jacob’s ready to roll By LIAM TWOMEY WESTERN Region Football League division one coach of the year Brett Jacobs is ready to lead the competition into battle. Jacobs has been appointed head coach of the WRFL interleague side for next year’s clash against the Southern Football League. The match will be part of the first metropolitan interleague carnival since 1999 and Jacobs said he was looking forward to being involved in the concept. “I was involved (in representative football) at an under 18 level and played in a game and really liked it,” Jacobs said. “Some of the guys I played with in that side I am still mates with today. It is a really good concept in that regard. “Hopefully the players are keen to get involved. Certainly I think younger guys would be really keen. A few of the older guys who battle to get up week to week might be pushing it and give it a wide berth. If that is the case we certainly understand. “I would hope players were keen and clubs allow them to play and it is well supported.” The next step for Jacobs will be to finalise his support staff for the match which will be played at Visy Park on 29 March. Once that is complete he will look at forming the playing squad. “I would imagine we will be casting a wide net,” he said. “There are a lot of quality players going around and I think we will have a large group to start with and then make cuts each week until we finalise the squad.” Next year’s interleague carnival will see the top six metropolitan leagues square off in one huge day of football. All leagues have been ranked prior to the

Other matches will include the fourth-placed Essendon District Football League taking on the third-placed Northern Football League, while the battle for the prestigious number one spot will be contested between the Victorian Amateur Football Association and the Eastern Football League. “The way the format is set up, within two years you could be playing off for the number one ranking,” Jacobs said. “It is very similar to the Country Championships and that is certainly really exciting. This is the first year it is in but I just think it will get bigger and bigger as each year goes past. That is why we are really hoping the clubs support it and the players get behind the process and put their hands up to be involved.”

Best picks By LIAM TWOMEY

VELOSTER 7 in stock all must clear

THE best junior cricketers in the Westerns Suburbs have been selected for next year’s Victorian State Championships. Held in January, the Championships will see the Western Spirit under-14, 16 and 18 teams go head to head with other regions throughout the state. Western Spirit under-14 assistant coach and selector George Shaw was rapt with the depth of talent in the region. “We want to make certain that the sides that we have picked are heavily in the mix to make finals,” Shaw said. “We have certainly gone along those lines to ensure we have picked healthy squads and I can honestly say, in each squad we really could have easily picked up to 20 or 25 boys. “It was very difficult to get it down to the last 13. It was really just about a balance in some sides and some lads are very unlucky to miss out.” The Western Spirit program has also been given a boost this season through a greater link with Premier Cricket Club Footscray Edgewater and the Bulldogs Cricket Academy. Footscray players including Michael Kelly, Lucas Dredge and Michael Hill are all coaching sides, ensuring the West’s rising stars get a firsthand look at what it takes to make it at Premier Cricket level. Shaw said it was great to have the support of the Bulldogs.

Michael Kelly is coaching the Western Spirit under-18 side for the upcoming State Championships. 110197 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI “It is outstanding,” he said. “What Footscray has done is they have put a fair bit of money into this program and the Bulldogs Academy. “They have thrown a lot of resources into the coaching and on top of that, they have really made sure the club is in a

healthy position to coach all the kids in our own backyard. “They are being well viewed and well looked after. From our point of view it is a really good opportunity for the western region to make sure the kids are well coached and well looked after.”

PLAYING in Wednesday’s Australian Baseball League All Star Game is going to be that little bit more special for Darryl George. The young gun shortstop, currently plying his trade with both the Melbourne Aces and the Tampa Bay Rays in the US, is very much looking forward to representing Australia against the World All Stars. This year’s ABL showpiece will be taking place at the Aces’ Melbourne Ballpark in Altona, which for George, is right on his own doorstep. “I (grew up) in Hoppers Crossing, just around the corner,” George said. “I used to come down here and watch the old ABL back when that was on, so this is pretty much my backyard.” At 20 years of age, George still has the world at his feet. And considering his already impressive resume - donning the green and gold in the familiar surrounds of his home ballpark will be a massive honour for George. “To represent my country is something growing up as a kid I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m very grateful to be given that opportunity,” he said. “It’s just cool. It’s always an honour to be able to represent your country, especially in front of friends and family as well being so close to home. “So I’m looking forward to the opportunity and I’m sure it will be a fun night as well.” Since signing with the Rays in 2010, baseball has become a 24/7 gig for George. He was just a teenager when the Rays first snapped him up after representing Victoria as part of the Major League Baseball Academy program on the Gold Coast. Naturally, it took George a bit of time to adjust to his drastically new lifestyle, but he insists it does get easier with experience. “I think definitely in the first year the home-

Darryl George will take part in Wednesday’s ABL All Star Game at Altona’s Melbourne Picture: SMP Images Ballpark. 112094 sickness is huge,” George explained. “You’re 18-years-old, fresh out of high school and you’re so used to being with mum and dad and then you go away and it’s a dog-eat-dog kind of world. “It’s a very competitive place and I think it just means you have to grow up a lot quicker.” Though George may now be well on his way to the big time, he hasn’t forgotten his humble beginnings as a Werribee Giant. “I’m definitely looking forward to going down there and helping them out a bit more.”

Newport set up By ADEM SARICAOGLU NEWPORT has set itself up nicely for the final two-thirds of the Division One Summer League baseball season. The Rams scored their third win on the trot last Tuesday night at Melbourne Ballpark with a tough 7-5 triumph over Upwey. Just two days earlier Newport thrashed the same opposition 21-5, but coach Grant Weir insisted Tuesday’s two-run win was just as impressive. “It sounds strange but we really had to fight (on Tuesday), whereas Sunday came pretty easily,” Weir said. “But we knew playing them again was going to be tough, and it was. “They took a 4-0 lead at the

top of the first inning and that could’ve just kicked us - but we scored three in the bottom of the first and then our pitchers settled right down and kept them to one run for the rest of the game.” The result took the Rams to a solid 6-5 record for the season, prompting Weir to praise his side’s form to this point in the summer. “We’ve won our last three and had a couple of washouts in those games as well which we would’ve been hopeful of getting a result with,” Weir said. “To be 6-5 with the two washouts as we are, I think that’s probably about par for where we thought we might be. “We’ve had five losses and I don’t like having one loss - but

Werribee Hyundai

the six wins have been good. “Our defence and pitching has been pretty good all year and we’re just starting to hit our straps as a hitting team now, too.” Currently well-placed in Conference Two of the division, the newly-promoted Rams have firmly put themselves into finals calculations. However Weir knows better than to get too caught up on his side’s current success, acknowledging there’s still a long summer of baseball ahead. “I’m not too worried about finals at this point,” he said. “It’s a long season and it’s the original ‘each game as it comes’ approach because the finals are too far away to start thinking about.”

Tigers off to flying start

I LOVE the passion people have for their football clubs at all levels of the game from AFL to grassroots. Last week I hosted Inside the Kennel at the Bulldogs and president Peter Gordon spoke about the future of the club with genuine passion and commitment, but tempered with the knowledge and wisdom, that success comes from hard work and planning. Then I interviewed the three draftees to the club. Two eighteen year-olds and a 23 year-old. Matt Fuller, the 23 year-old, cannot get the smile off his face, and rightly so. He thought his AFL dream was gone, and while he was happy to play at SANFL level, he still had the desire to play at the top level. He, like the other two, is now living his dream and good luck to them all. PASSION can also become poison when people become blinded by it. That is when the other p word - paranoia, sets in. I have been taken to task in recent times by a few clubs over my comments both in this column and on SEN. That is fine, I welcome feedback both for and against. I do not profess to have all the answers to the problems of the world, but I am entitled to have an opinion, and if you do not agree with me, that is fine too. It is an opinion, not a fact. I don’t get personal and I don‘t expect it from others. Feel free to challenge my opinions by all means, I welcome that. I HAVE started my summer stint on SEN and you will be hearing a lot of me in the coming

In the

Doghouse KEVIN HILLIER weeks on various timeslots during the day. This is the quietest time of year for football news as all clubs, at all levels are holidaying, and all leagues are closed down as well, but it does give the chance for some lesser profile sports to get some exposure. I really enjoy being on air over the summer - it does have its challenges but it is good fun. I want to thank all those readers who have sent emails with events and news during the year. I do appreciate your contribution to this column and hope it continues in the future. CHRIS Byrne and the team at Westpoint Ford have been my sponsor since day one and I value their support and commitment. I am looking forward to being with my family over Christmas. I would like to wish all readers a safe, happy and fun Christmas and look forward to be back in 2014. WERRIBEE Cricket Club has had a flying start to the 2013-14 season. Their firsts are undefeated and appear firm favourites for the flag. The runs are coming easily too with Matt Dean scoring a century recently in the ones and in the lower grades Dillon Taylor, Jack Gage and UK import MG Brown getting to the magical three figures. Shaun Dean and Tim O’Brien recently played in the VSDCA rep side and while both made a valuable contribution with bat (Dean 35, O’Brien 42) they lost on the second last ball of the game. The last T20 game for the season is on this Tuesday (17 December) at Chirnside Park with a barbecue, so head down and see some of our local cricketing talent in action. I would love to hear from other cricket clubs with details of how you are going in 2014.
