Our tough issue By KRYSTEN MANUEL ANYONE who has read NewsWeekly since the Letters section started in August knows just how hotly contested the issue of the Englehardt Street pro-life protesters is. Leading the way in what he believes is a fair compromise is retired local obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Pieter Mourik. In a bid to remove the protesters from the front of the clinic to the other side of the road, Dr Mourik has met with both Albury police and Albury Council in the past three weeks. “On Tuesday (last week), Dr Rebecca McGowan and I had a formal meeting with Superintendent Beth Stirton and three other senior policemen,” he said. “We were advised to go there by the mayor and Mr Michael Keys because they said it’s a legal matter, the police have to be involved. “It’s funny, because the police said it’s a council matter because they own the nature strip. I feel like I’m being ping-ponged from one to the other!” During the meeting with Albury
police, Dr Mourik asked that the clinic have a copy of the conditions which must be met by the protesters when applying for a permit to protest each week. “A year ago, Superintendent Stirton insisted only two people were allowed outside the clinic, they weren’t allowed to occupy the footpath and they weren’t allowed to obstruct access to the clinic,” Dr Mourik said. “The ones on the side with the clinic do not obey that condition. They stand on the footpath and they obstruct people going in and going out. “From the clinic’s point of view, they need to know what conditions are applied because they’re there every day, they see everything that happens. “She (Supt Stirton) said they had to get legal advice before they gave us a letter which included the conditions of supplying the permit.” During the meeting with council, Dr Mourik asked that by-laws be reviewed to include an Area of Exclusion for all businesses in Albury, reiterating his request in a letter. Angels give the sacks
Editorial
By KRYSTEN MANUEL ABOUT 200 local youth in foster care or living in youth refuges will receive a ‘Santa sack’ this year, thanks to Angels For The Forgotten (AFTF). Having only started their Albury branch in August, this will be the first Christmas appeal for the organisation and has proved to be a success. “We’ve been pretty successful, AFTF team leader for Albury Wodonga region, Jade Tauber said. “This year we had to do up about 200 Santa sacks and we will meet that target this week. Ms Tauber said the toy drive ran in a similar way to other Christmas appeals - with lots of hard work and many generous individuals and businesses. “Deliveries all come to us
Generosity of spirit shines for season THIS edition of NewsWeekly has particularly demonstrated the generous festive spirit of the Border. With Wodonga Carols By Candlelight donating over $5,000 to Albury Wodonga Health, the upcoming Myrtleford Golden Spurs Rodeo donating to the local Lions Club, volunteers from UnitingCare offering up a meal and friendly conversation to the lonely on Christmas, Angels For the Forgotten donating 200 Santa sacks to foster children and the Track Cycling Carnival donating to the Flutterby Foundation and Carevan, it’s great to see local charities putting money back into local people. It’s these people, issues and events that NewsWeekly is built on, aiming to relay stories of achievement, pride, contention and loss back to locals in a bid to both celebrate and better the community. NewsWeekly would like to thank the Albury Wodonga region for their support in 2013 and wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
and we put together Santa sacks for each child, she said. “We have different age ranges that we put different presents into and they all get put into a hand-made Santa sack with three presents. “We then deliver them to the agency the child is involved with, then they distribute them to the children. Specialty Press has been an active participant this year by donating on behalf of their clients. “Part of Specialty Press’s end of year Christmas arrangement for any of their customers, instead of purchasing gifts, is to give their clients a card to say they would donate to AFTF on their behalf, Ms Tauber said. “Then Speciality Press went out and bought presents on behalf of all their clients and cus-
tomers. “We’ve had Wodonga TAFE and kids on campus do that as well and we’re hoping to get more businesses involved in the future. AFTF is dedicated to giving dignity, hope and joy to the community’s most vulnerable children, youth and families who are homeless, entering foster care or living in crisis. The crisis care package is the core service at present, with packages given to children who have been removed from their home and are placed into outof-home care. The AFTF Christmas Appeal is an extension of this core idea. For further information, visit www.angelsfortheforgotten.org or email at wodonga@angelsfortheforgotten.org

Police out in force By KRYSTEN MANUEL THIS holiday season the police are out in full force, paying particular attention to those drink/drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, speeding and driving while fatigued. Four operations comprise the Victorian Police Summer Stay road enforcement campaign, with two of the four already launched. Operation RAID targets drink and drug driving and is aimed at removing all impaired drivers from the roads, running from 15 November to 8 December. Operation Break-up focuses on distraction and seatbelt offences pre-Christmas and runs from 9 to 23 December. Operation Crossroads will be launched on 23 December and runs through to 3 January, focusing on high-risk factors associated with holiday driving during the Christmas/New Year week, particularly speeding drivers. This operation will mark the official holiday road toll period. Operation Fresh Start will focus on fatigue with the return of the industrial sector from the holiday break, running from 4-5 January. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill launched Operation Break Up most recently and said Christmas was a time where many of the most vulnerable road users were on the roads, heightening the risk and calling for an end to all distractions. “That makes it even more important to ensure all drivers remain vigilant and take extra care,” he said. “If you receive a ticket for using your mobile phone while you are
Police have all drivers covered this holiday season. driving, get booked for not wearing a seatbelt or you’re penalised for not crossing the roads correctly, I make no apologies. “That ticket may just be the reminder or the intervention needed to prevent someone being seriously injured or killed in a collision.” Across the Border, Minister for Roads Duncan Gay launched a new road safety campaign Don’t Trust Your Tired Self last Friday. “Many drivers aren’t aware how being tired can affect their driving,” Minister Gay said. “You might be a good driver, but your tired self isn’t. Do not trust them behind the wheel.” Minister Gay said last year 62 people died and 1,959 people were injured on our roads in fatigue related crashes.
General Manager of Transport for NSW’s Centre for Road Safety Marg Prendergast said research also showed tiredness was not only an issue for people taking long journeys or driving at night. “Crashes related to tiredness are more likely at night when your body is used to being asleep, but many also occur at other times of the day including early morning and during the afternoon,” she said. “Being awake for around 17 hours has a similar effect on your driving ability as having a blood alcohol content of 0.05 – so it’s just like being over the limit.” Planning ahead is the best way to deal with tiredness. Transport for NSW has developed a new website to help people assess how tired they

might be and learn how to avoid driving tired. Visit testyourtiredself.com.au for a fun and simple test based on a series of questions, memory challenges and reaction responses to see how tired you might be before driving. NSW Police traffic and highway patrol operations commander, Superintendent Stuart Smith said police would be getting behind the campaign in a number of ways, including branding a number of police vehicles with Don’t Trust Your Tired Self messages. “Unfortunately tiredness is not something police can detect like alcohol. This is why this education campaign is so important to us,” Supt Smith said. “Police see the tragic aftermath of what happens due to these crashes.”
Our tough issue From page 1 AlburyCity director for planning and development Michael Keys sent a reply which includes the following: “AlburyCity supports the rights of all community members to access premises without interference … the AlburyCity Street and Outdoor Activities Policy was reviewed in 2013, this included calling for public submissions, at that time the issue of “exclusion zones” was not raised or considered. This local policy is not proposed to be reviewed again until 2018. An earlier review and specific consideration of an exclusion zone would only commence where there is evidence of a significant level of community interest.” Since NewsWeekly began the Letters section in August 2013, 42 letters to the editor have been received, of which 27 were related to the issue –10 in support of the protesters, 17 against. One such letter has brought the effect on road users to the discussion and includes the following: “I have seen two very close calls of women running out into the street to get away from them (protesters) … The one which I was the driver happened when a young lady was walking away from the clinic and was ‘set upon’ by the protesters. This made the young lady cover her ears … with papers she was carrying then ran across the road to get away from them. She ran right in front of my car and I had to brake hard to avoid hitting her … the only reason I was able to stop was because I was deliberately going slowly past as I had previously seen them cause another women to run out in front of a car.” Another group speaking out are residents and businesses surrounding the clinic. Ms Lesley Jenkins spoke to NewsWeekly last week, saying she feels helpless in the situation. “I feel intimidated by witnessing instances of intimidation and not being able to do anything,” she said. NewsWeekly approached the protesters present at the clinic last Thursday and were asked to contact a spokesman for Helpers For God’s Precious Infants, though no comment was received.

Spirit of Christmas By KRYSTEN MANUEL ON 25 December, while you’re unwrapping your gifts, tucking into a delicious Christmas meal and surrounded by your chosen family, many people will be alone for various reasons. This is the sad reality of Christmas. Luckily, there is a minority of people who selflessly give up their time to put a hot meal in the bellies of the hungry and offer friendly conversation to the lonely. One such group is UnitingCare Wodonga and St Stephen’s Uniting Church, who provide a free Christmas dinner for around 200 people who would normally go without. In its 11th year, the service is a credit to all involved - businesses who have donated money, drivers who pick up the guests, organisers and decorators, right through to the cooks in the kitchen. Bernard Smith has been lending a hand for the past four years and has still managed to make the day a family affair. “My wife answered an ad about four years ago,” he said. “I’d never done this sort of thing before and because I’d been driving taxis in Albury for a number of years I was given the job to pick the people up. “My youngest daughter was given the job to pick people up in Wodonga. My wife enjoys it, she goes with my daughter to help pick up people - they have a great time. “But this year my daughter’s picking up people and I’m doing the organising of runs for people because I’m not allowed
Ian Bedford, Renate Salzke and Bernard Smith will all be lending a hand at the UnitingCare Christmas Dinner. to drive any more, and my grandkids are coming the night before to help set up.” Mr Smith said he truly enjoyed the day - from meeting new people to the satisfaction of giving back. “I enjoy it, that’s the beauty of it, and the reason is I’m giving back,” he said. “I see people I saw during the year when I was driving cabs, I actually had one of my neighbours I’d never met come here a couple of years ago. “It brings a lot of people together and that’s the beauty of it. Some of the people who come to the dinner, it’s the only time they meet other people throughout the year. And you listen to some of their stories they’re unreal.” Renate Salzke has been attending the dinner as a guest for
around five years, but now assists where she can. “If it wasn’t for these people, after I got disabled, I don’t think I’d be here today,” she said. “They just picked me up and were so wonderful. That’s why I do what I can. Anyone wishing to attend needs to register with the UnitingCare Office by visiting St Stephen’s Uniting Church - Cnr Beechworth Rd and Nilmar Ave between 9.30am and 12.30pm weekdays or calling 6024 2108 between 9am and 5pm. Anyone considering volunteering who might otherwise be alone on Christmas Day should register, though may not be accommodated as volunteers. The Christmas dinner will be held on Christmas Day at 11.30 am at St. Stephen’s Uniting Church Wodonga.

THE Myrtleford Golden Spurs Rodeo (MGSR) is celebrating its 60th anniversary, having run consecutively since 1953. The event now attracts 3,500 people and competitors from far and wide to the humble alpine township, but this year spectators will be treated to a little something extra. “Being our 60th Golden Spurs Rodeo we will run the big screen again and have some historical footage from the ’50s and ’60s rodeos filmed by local photographer Tiff Rayners,” MGSR secretary Darren Murphy said. “He got a camera when he was a kid and continued using it right through his life, so he’s captured all the historical moments in history and events in Myrtleford.” Mr Murphy said the locals were particularly looking forward to the historical footage as the MGSR was a widely respected event. “We’re looking forward to our historical view of rodeos,” Mr Murphy said. “Myrtleford has its place in the history of rodeo in Australia. The Women’s Rodeo Association was formed in Myrtleford back in the ’60s and at the Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach there’s acknowledgement to Myrtleford and photographs on display. “It’s also a fairly significant rodeo in the circuit. Beechworth will follow up on January 4, then Yarrawonga and Tumbarumba. This is why we get cowboys from the North coming down - because they can compete in four rodeos in a week or two and it all goes to towards the national finals held on the Gold Coast each year.” This year will welcome back Happy Gill and his stable of infamous stock. Among them will be a new bull called War Chief - Australia’s best bucking bull who remains unridden to this day. This year will also feature the first ladies’ saddle bronc ride for the Myrtl-

He rode in the finals here in the ’60s and has ridden in the Philippines with Happy Gill, so we have him as an official guest who will present the Golden Spurs at the end of the evening.” The community is expecting the jampacked event to draw the crowds - as it has every year, with all proceeds going back into the community. “It’s run by volunteers, it’s a family friendly day and all the proceeds go back into the community in many different ways - it’s a win, win, win,” Mr Murphy said.

THE 38th Annual Wodonga Carols By Candlelight has been hailed a ‘huge success’ by co-ordinator Lindsay Hanchett. “It was excellent,” he said. “We had a lot of help from the council and volunteer groups which made it run very smoothly and the performers did more than we could have asked of them. “This is the first year we’ve offered both battery operated and wax candles. They were the same price and people still preferred the wax candle.” It is estimated over 8000 families and friends attended the event, not to mention the worldwide audience listening over the radio and internet. The generosity of performers, organisers, behind-the-scenes workers and attendees resulted in over $5000 being raised for Albury Wodonga Regional Health towards equipment for the rehabilitation unit - a lasting legacy from the event.

Joining marathon effort A TEAM from Beechworth is set to compete in one of the world’s longest canoe races up the Murray River this Boxing Day. Having competed for the first time last year, several new faces from both Albury and Beechworth have now been inspired to rotate through the canoe as they complete in various 18-25km intervals. The race covers an amazing 404km over five days, beginning in Yarrawonga, finishing in Swan Hill and passing through Tocumwal, Picnic Point, Echuca, Torrumbarry, Cohuna and Murrabit. “This year our entry includes several first-time paddlers in addition to those of us that competed
last year,” Beechworth team organiser Darren Mcdonald said. “We expect this year’s event will attract up to 750 paddlers and 2,500 support crew who will be assisting along the way and at the campsites each night.” Michael O’Callaghan who is participating in the event for the second year said he was looking forward to challenging some of the professional and semi-professional Melbourne teams that have extensive financial backing and support. “For us it is about completing, not competing,” he said. “At night, when we set to our campsite we sit back and talk over the day, cook our own meal, patch
up new blisters and prepare for the next day. Some of the Melbourne teams come fully equipped with their professional masseuses, coaches and cooks. “Our entry is on a budget and while we are definitely here to complete the event it would be nice to get ahead of some of the bigger teams with far bigger budgets.” Michael, Darren and their team have been actively fund-raising to collect the expected $5,000 that it will cost them and their support crew to enter the event. This past weekend they held a fund-raising sausage sizzle paid for by the Beechworth and District Community Bank.

The aim was to raise at least $500 from the day which would add to the $800 sponsorship contribution the bank has already made. “This is a great event and the monies raised go to a good cause,” Beechworth and District Community Bank manager Gareth Kay said. “We are all about supporting our community by donating our profits back into positive local outcomes.” The YMCA re-invests all funds raised from the event back into the Murray River region to help maintain social, environmental and economic sustainability. just to amuse ourselves. Rodeos are on their way out. Why does the A.T. ban them and so many other countries around the world if they aren’t forms of animal abuse and mistreatment? I’m sorry to carry on for so long but I love animals and I deplore their mistreatment. Like I must have said before we are just animals ourselves who have a slight edge over our nearest ancestor in the ability to think and reason. We are dealing with child abuse, domestic violence, bullying and other forms of violence within our own society. Why do we have to extend our activities into the lives of other species? Sumner Berg, Beechworth.
Open your hearts THERE is a rodeo coming to Beechworth to raise funds for our sporting clubs, which I am totally against. But first I would like to applaud Glen Wilson from Tallangatta Valley who submitted a letter (NewsWeekly 11 December) regarding the abuse of racehorses by using a whip. He should have mentioned the 18,000 horses which are ‘put down’ every year in the horse racing industry. But my beef is rodeos. I just feel that we as civilised animals should not be able to take an animal somewhere that it would not choose to go to do something that it would not choose to do. A horse is a herd animal and I’m sure would not enjoy being around a noisy atmosphere and led into a shute narrow enough to prevent it from turning around. Then a flank strap is placed on the horse. The flank is one of the most sensitive parts of a horse. Then a big lumphead gets onto the horse and the horse immediately wants to be rid of him and tries to buck but is confined. Just before the shute is opened a ‘cowboy’ yanks up on the flank strap to tighten it which according to the RPRA Beechworth Rodeo secretary, Maree Anstee, makes the horse alter its “bucking style”. Also so the horse doesn’t attempt to go out the way it was brought in, which I would certainly want to do, an electric prod is used to “guide” the horse towards the opening of the shute. Spurs are rounded and have to spin but are used to help the rider with his/her ‘timing.’ I believe they are also directed at the horses or bulls’ flanks. And now the horse has some “fun” trying to be rid of the cowboy on its back. Anything can happen from here on! I had a long talk to Maree Anstee and she told me that they train the horses to buck and I ask just how that was done? I didn’t get an adequate answer. All one has to do is have the guts to hop on a given horse to see how much it bucks. If it bucks a lot it would be good for the rodeo. All one would have to do then is breed two good buckers and get some little buckers. I’m glad I’ve got spellcheck! The point is bucker or not it’s like I stated just plain wrong for us to use animals in such ways

Get connected IT IS so great to have a paper like NewsWeekly connecting people and communities. We are seeing many challenges put out to us in our community. I think that our future will involve more community involvement and support to deal with these challenges. Strong community is going to be the big part of tackling our future path, not the Federal Government as we would all like to hope. I think as Christmas approaches if we could all remember our “older community”, the ones you don’t see. We have a rapidly ageing population, but remember those that are already in existence too. They are not invisible, they are isolated. They may not be in the “system” as we call it, receiving services or support.

Letters munity network to tackle our future, and a good one. Maria Berry, Huon.
They called the police and while the police were distracted, she leapt from the window and over three fences for her baby’s life. Dr Mourik seems to think there is something wrong that those witnessing in Englehardt Street are “religious” and that the Catholic Church funds the Women’s Life Centre. Surely there would be something wrong if they weren’t putting their convictions and money where their mouths are? Narrowing opposition to abortion down to “only the religious” is an old tactic of abortion advocates. Lawrence Lader, co- founder of the American abortion movement, developed this strategy. His co-founder, the late Dr Bernard Nathanson, revealed this in Aborting America. “Historically, every revolution has to have a villain. It’s easier for the people we want to persuade to perceive it this way ... it’s got to be the Catholic hierarchy,” Lader stated. Denise M. Cameron, President Pro Life Victoria (Inc), North Fitzroy.
Baby love DR PIETER Mourick (NewsWeekly, 4 December) is upset about “the one that got away”, the baby who escaped abortion at the Englehardt Street Clinic. It’s Christmas and he sounds like Scrooge! This is the time of the year we rejoice about another baby “who got away”. From Herod. In England, another baby has gotten away. The baby’s mother jumped out of an abortion clinic window. On arriving at the abortion facility, she told those witnessing she was being forced to abort by the people accompanying her. She managed to leave the clinic but these people threatened the witnessing counsellor, insisting she must abort. She returned to the clinic and frantically called the pregnancy support service.

This could be choice, not having the access to technology or the technical skills. Or it may just be lack of trust. Take the time to notice your elderly neighbour, and would it hurt when you are “overloaded” with too much Christmas food, to take a plate over? Not only is it a meal, it is social contact. It is a start! We have so many fantastic groups and organisations in our community. One featured recently was Travellers Aid. Robyn Dean and her team of volunteers need your support. This is one service at risk of going if not used and supported. In an ideal world it would be great to think we had all our services organisations, volunteers, community groups etc all linked in together . The one stop shop of information. One website here locally that Travellers Aid has registered on is called Oldies.But.Goodies.com.au Don’t let the name fool you, it’s for any age, it’s free, and it is about connecting our community. LEAVE AND LIVE. Holidays on fire HOLIDAY time is approaching and it’s important to be fire-ready before you head off on a holiday. Before leaving, check the Fire Danger Ratings for the areas you’re travelling through and your destination. The ratings predict how bad a fire would be if one started. The easiest way to check your rating is to visit cfa.vic.gov.au or download the FireReady smartphone app. While you’re away, check the ratings every day. On days of severe or extreme fire danger, it’s better to be in safer places like cities and towns. Code Red signals the worst possible conditions for a grass or bushfire. Never travel near bush or grass when a Code Red day has been forecast. Don’t rely on the map on your mobile phone during extreme conditions – you might lose reception or power. It’s always best to keep hard copies of maps whenever you can. If a fire has started in your area, keep up to date with alerts and warnings by tuning into the local radio station, going to cfa.vic.gov.au, or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
Parks recruits are hot, hot, hot FORTY new Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) firefighting recruits were put through their paces last week at a training camp near Myrtleford. During the week-long camp the project firefighters covered topics including fire suppression, fire behaviour, map reading, fireground communications and safety. “The annual training camps provide firefighters with a good mix of classroom and field-based learning,” DEPI Hume Fire Training and Capability Manager, Lisa North said. “It’s all about learning the theory and practical skills, then testing everything in the field. “They get to meet and work alongside experienced firefighters and gain an understanding of what it’s like on the fire-line.”
“This is the third training camp which has been held in the Hume Region during the past month to ensure our new firefighters are ready for the summer fire season.” “At the completion of the camps, the project firefighters return to their work centres to undertake additional training and accreditation, including four-wheel driving and dangerous trees. “The project firefighters will then assist DEPI’s permanent crews to undertake priority works including fire suppression, planned burning, track clearing and slashing.” Each year, DEPI recruits seasonal project firefighters to assist with bushfire suppression and prevention during the warmer months of the year. New powers tackle hazards THE NSW Government is introducing laws that will streamline hazard reduction processes, strengthen offences and protect emergency service workers, according to minister for police and emergency services Michael Gallacher. “The NSW Government wants to ensure our emergency services workers can do what they need to do to protect lives and property and will continue to remove any barriers that hinder or delay their responses,” he said. “The NSW Government will also remove obstacles for home owners to encourage them to responsibly manage fire risks on their properties. “Under other changes to be introduced to Parliament today the Rural Fire Service will have the power to direct a Bush Fire Management Committee to amend its Bush Fire Risk Management Plan, if it’s considered to be inadequate.” He said the changes also give the RFS Commissioner the power to carry out hazard reduction on land without the consent of the owner, after reasonable attempts to contact the landowner have failed. “The NSW Government will boost penalties for anyone caught impersonating an emergency service worker, including where they seek to exercise a power of emergency personnel or intend to commit a criminal offence,” Mr Gallacher said. “New laws will include two new offences for littering involving cigarettes and matches. An aggravated offence with a higher penalty will apply when littering occurs on days where a total fire ban is in place. “The Bill also makes provisions to ensure police and

enforcement officers can issue penalty notices for these offences which carry fines of $330 and $660 for the aggravated offence. “This year’s bushfires have caused damage on a huge scale, particularly in the Blue Mountains where more than 200 homes were destroyed and another 120 damaged,” he said. “We are also developing new rules which when commenced will allow home-owners in designated bushfire prone areas to clear trees near their homes to protect their property from bushfires, in an environmentally responsible way, without the requirement of an assessment or approval.” Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Brad Hazzard said the proposed new rules would come into force once the amendments were passed by the Parliament. It would mean residents in designated bushfire prone areas will not need to seek permission to sensibly clear vegetation that is posing a fire risk from around their property. When the new rules are implemented, home owners adjacent to and those in close proximity to bushland will not need to get permission to clear trees within 10 metres of their
homes, on their own land. Mr Hazzard said they will be able to clear undergrowth and shrubs within 50 metres of their homes, on their own land. “This will need to be done in an environmentally responsible manner but our changes will ensure the rules regarding hazard reduction are based on protecting lives and property – people before trees is the priority,” he said. “We need to ensure the community is as prepared as it possibly can be for future bushfires and that authorities have the powers they need to conduct this essential work.” “The NSW Government was doing its bit to reduce bushfire risks and we are on track to achieve our goal of increasing hazard reduction across NSW by 45 per cent by 2016,” Mr Hazzard said. Last financial year hazard reduction burns occurred on about 280,000 hectares of land more than two-and-a-half times the amount carried out two years ago. Government agencies are now working to put in place the relevant procedures and guidelines to implement legislative and policy changes.

LEAVE AND LIVE. Be clear on what to do THIS summer, it’s up to each individual to understand their own fire risk and plan ahead. The fire risk depends on where people live or travel, the weather conditions and how prepared they are. If you live or travel near areas that are heavily forested, have thick bush or long, dry grass, or coastal areas with lots of scrub, you’re at risk. Drying grass after a wet winter has increased the risk of grass and scrub fires this summer and weather conditions will have a significant effect on how severe a fire is and how quickly it spreads. The combination of dry conditions with hot, windy days means bushfires can quickly become uncontrollable. Many people get caught out by fire during or after a wind change. It only takes a change in wind direction to turn a small fire into a dangerous, fast moving fire front. Knowing where to go, when and how you’ll get there on a bad day is an important part of your planning this summer. If a fire threatens, a drive that would normally take five
minutes could take hours, or be inaccessible. Fires can be confusing, disorienting, physically and psychologically stressful and exhausting. Making decisions in these circumstances is difficult and may cost lives. Now is the time to make plans, not when there is fire in your area. Decide in advance when you’ll leave, where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, and where you’ll shelter if you get caught out and cannot leave your property or your area. Ensure everyone you live with knows these plans so everyone is clear about what to do on a high fire risk day. Check on friends nearby to see if they have a fire plan in place. Prepare a relocation kit containing important documents and essentials like mobile phones, radios, medications, clothes and water, and pack the kit in advance, so there’s no delay in an emergency. Talking to CFA is the best way to understand your fire risk and plan ahead. For further information, go to cfa. vic.gov.au.

Know your fire risk, make plans now and organise your relocation kit.
Prepare pet preserving plan WHEN constructing a fire plan, don’t forget about your animals - the last thing a family needs is to lose a beloved pet because they couldn’t be found in the chaos of a fire situation. Recently retired local veterinarian Arthur Frauenfelder offers some simple advice for those formulating a plan. “The absolute priority is for everybody to have a fire plan,” he suggests. “Number one priority is people come first - that must be stressed. Secondly, it’s very simple to sit down and in half an hour design an animal plan. “Firstly you need to keep cats and dogs in the house so they’re totally accessible and you’re not chasing them around the back yard,” he said. “Have carry-cages for the smaller animals, including smaller dogs. The
cages must be somewhere accessible so when you’re about to leave you can grab them easily.” Dr Frauendfelder also suggests pets have collars with contact details and are micro-chipped in the event they go missing. For larger farm animals it can be more difficult, but again, following some simple instructions can save the animals where possible or practical. “Horses can be put in a large paddock with very little fuel,” he said. “When the fire comes through they will be forced to one end of the paddock and will jump the fire. “With cattle and sheep, if you can’t move them all early you have to make a decision about which ones you want to keep.
“Cattle and sheep will stand in a corner, the fire will go through them, and they’re lost - but it’s very important not to let them out of the yard or they can stray onto the road and be hit by cars.” Dr Frauenfelder said there was no need to panic with pets in the car once on the move. He said they could survive as normal while travelling, and all that’s required is to have enough emergency food and water supplies until it’s safe to return home. “You don’t have to stop after half an hour to water the animals,” he said. “You just keep going and get out, and go to where you’ve planned. “It all sounds very basic but if you have a plan in place it can save your animals.”
When organising your fire plan, don’t forget to include pets and livestock.
FIRE Danger Ratings tell you how a fire would behave and how hard it would be to put out if one started. They are your trigger to take action. The ratings are based on weather conditions and other factors, such as the volume of dry vegetation in an area. They are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data up to four days in advance. The ratings are declared by fire weather district, so it’s important to understand which district you’re in. The three most important ratings to look out for are Severe, Extreme and Code Red. Code Red signals the worst conditions for a grass or bushfire and means that if a fire was to start, it would be uncontrollable. No house can withstand a fire in Code Red conditions, so defending your home is impossible. A rating of Extreme or Severe signals high fire risk conditions. If a fire starts and takes hold, it will be unpredictable and fast moving. If you live in a high-risk area, your house is not prepared, or you are not able to defend it, leaving early in the day is your safest option. Total Fire Bans tell you what you can and cannot do to avoid a fire starting. They are legal restrictions which, if broken, can be penalised with large fines and imprisonment. Check your rating every day over summer at cfa.vic.gov.au or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
IN AN EMERGENCY, YOUR MOBILE PHONE MAY BE SENT A WARNING BASED ON YOUR LOCATION. If you are travelling, staying or living within an area affected by an emergency, your mobile phone may be sent an emergency warning message. This enhanced Emergency Alert service is available across all phone networks, in addition to the existing service which sends warnings to landlines and mobile phones based on your telephone’s service address. Do not rely on receiving a warning message on your phone. You still need to prepare for an emergency and you shouldn’t wait to receive a warning before you act. For details visit www.emergencyalert.gov.au

Set in the late ’70s and early ’80s, American Hustle tells the story of Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Adams) – a clever couple who made their living on a talent to con. But it seems their glory days are over when a particularly erratic FBI agent – Richie DiMaso (Cooper) catches them in the act and forces the pair to start working undercover for him. Between Irving’s raw talent and Richie’s hungry eyes for career fame, Irving and Sydney are pushed deeper and deeper into a dangerous world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia. With stakes so high they dictate millions of dollars and everyone’s lives, the reluctant Irving
is surrounded by the impending threat of failure. Will it be his feisty wife Rosalyn (Lawrence), or will it be his own guilt at using a new-found friend that unravels the whole thing? For me, the best part of this film was the acting – superb performances from all and all playing very different roles than ever before. Christian Bale was clearly the stand-out – playing an unattractive but brilliant man with all the finely-tuned nuances of his understated character, followed closely by Jennifer Lawrence and her self-indulged, larger-than-life personality. Another strong point to American Hustle was the humour. The tug of war between the intelligent, calm players and the flighty, infuriating ones was always going to be a recipe for comedy. Despite the various twists and turns of the film – not to mention the last big twist, I actually became quite bored during this film – happily distracted by the glitz and glamour on show.
A Playboy Magazine in braille is one of the many fascinating works at the Albury LibraryMuseum’s latest exhibition.
Eye-opening exhibition A BRAILLE Playboy magazine, a talking ski bumbag and the ball bowled in the first match of blind cricket played in Melbourne nearly 100 years ago. These are just some of the items and innovations on show at Albury LibraryMuseum in its latest exhibition Living in a Sensory World: Stories From People With Blindness and Low Vision, which opens tomorrow. The exhibition looks at how Australians with eye conditions learn, work, play sport, create art and carry out everyday tasks. Through objects, interactive displays and multimedia, the exhibition explores a world that relies on sound, touch and smell to navigate through the environment. “The significant challenges faced by
people who are blind or have low vision have inspired a history of incredible innovation that has changed the lives of those affected,” Vision Australia, Albury team manager Kerry Strauch said. “Living in a Sensory World highlights these innovations - from the invention of braille through to the current development of the bionic eye.” The exhibition features 100 objects, including items from Vision Australia’s heritage collection and Museum Victoria’s Royal Institute for the Blind collection. Some of the items on show are examples of braille and large print labeling, including a look at the history of Frenchman Louis Braille, who invented the tactile reading and writing format now used worldwide. Also on display are sonicguide glass-
es from the 1960s that used sounds to identify objects, a Taylor slate from the early 20th century that assisted people who were blind to learn maths, the cricket ball made of woven cane with bottle tops inside, which was used in the first blind cricket match played in Melbourne in 1922 and a simulation of the vision that might be possible with the bionic eye. The exhibition was developed by Vision Australia in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum. It is supported by Visions of Australia – an Australian Government program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of cultural material across Australia. The exhibition will be officially launched at 11am on Thursday 19 December at the Albury LibraryMuseum.

“THE smell of rotting bodies from being trapped under the concrete ... I saw the rescue teams and locals coming back and looking under the concrete, trying to figure out how they would get these bodies out,” local business owner Graeme Connelly said. “Just to see the devastation ... They’re living in the ruins. The locals that haven’t left are living under the boards. “When you leave you feel like you’re abandoning them.” In just four days in Tacloban, ground zero for Typhoon Haiyan, Mr Connelly and his friend, Sydney Pastor Richard Tng, distributed two truckloads of food, essentials and tools to 100 families, plus boxes upon boxes of medicine – around $30,000 worth of goods. And that’s just the beginning. “We’re wanting to raise about $100,000 in total,” Mr Connelly said. “It’s going into building materials, food and clothing directly to those who are in dire need that the big guys, the NGOs, won’t reach.” Plans for the whirlwind trip essentially began when news broke before the typhoon hit, and thanks to friendships spanning nearly 6000 kilometres, these plans were able to deliver direct assistance to hundreds of victims. Mr Connelly made contact with several friends over Facebook before the typhoon hit and after a gruelling week of no communication, a message was finally sent – ‘we’re alive!’ Soon, Mr Connelly was in contact with Ps Tng, who in turn had a contact in Dr Gloria Fabrigas in Tacloban and was able to provide a list of medicines needed. Fund-raisers in both Sydney

We looked at supporting 100 families, so we bought 100 pairs of thongs, 100 pairs of ladies’ underwear, 100 pairs of shorts, a generator, a chainsaw, food.
“Two truckloads went down and when we got there we distributed food up to a small village that had been blown over. “The good thing was that what we got from the money raised went in on ground zero really quick. The NGOs are doing a great job, but there were some immediate needs and for us there was no red tape, nothing. “The large organisations come in and settle things down, they give the
immediate relief until they can see there’s a system in place with the locals where no-one’s dying and everyone’s getting a bit of food, they will then hop in the choppers and go to the next natural disaster. “And that’s where we come in. “It was really satisfying - we shot an arrow from Wodonga and it flew 4000 miles and hit a bullseye.” In the four days spent in Tacloban,
A POPULAR Albury night club has been named as one of the “most violent venues” in New South Wales according to the State Government. Groove Saint, on Dean Street, was ranked as one of the 21 worst venues in the state for an excessive number of violent incidents, according to information compiled by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOSCAR) and released by Minister for Hospitality George Souris last week. There were 12 violent incidents recorded at Groove Saint for the 2012/13 financial year, with the venue now classified as a ‘Level 2’ premises for which specific restrictions will now apply. we have a hub of criminality here,” he said. “They just had a few more incidents than last year.” Insp Sorensen supported the restrictions to be introduced at Groove Saint this month and said similar conditions had been used at bars in Newcastle to great effect. “I’ve come from Newcastle which is notorious for its night life violence and these types of restrictions have been successful up there, such as prohibiting glass,” he said. Mr Souris said the NSW Government will be seeking legislative amendments to the Liquor Act to allow for special powers to impose conditions earlier in the evening if a
venue is considered high-risk before midnight. “Currently, a number of the scheme’s conditions only apply after midnight but this amendment would aim to ensure that venues, including country venues that have earlier closing times, can still be effectively targeted with conditions if violent incidents and high risk trading periods are occurring earlier,” he said. Ivy, in the Sydney CBD, was ranked as the most violent premises in the state and classified as a Level 1 venue, with 26 incidents reported for the year. Albury Wodonga News Weekly contacted management at Groove Saint but they declined to comment.

home entertainment WITH GEOFF HABERECHT OF TRU HIFI
Hi-fi’s true blue move TRU HI-FI has moved to its new location, showcasing some of the best audio brands available in the world today. We can present a wide array of audio styles and standards that has left the music lover with an abundance of choice. Through this column I will introduce some different styles that are available to the music lover. Many who have downsized in size have discovered that the enthusiasm toward music downsized with it. We saw in the ’80s and ’90s the US company Bose lead the way with small size sound systems with sound that defied belief. Since those days numerous companies have looked to improve and develop a custom to the décor style outcome. The notable UK Company Cambridge Audio did something that was refreshing and that was to engage with the customer via their website, instead of running off to India to have the customer frustrated with their problems so they can simply go away with a minor cost to the company. Cambridge Audio engaged with the end user and it was not uncommon for the head designer to respond to the blog. The consistent number of years they have done this made for a product more in line with what the client was looking for rather than the engineer or company accountant. Over the past few years other leading companies have responded to the partner factor when a new home was
built and the old large speaker boxes looked fit for the workshop. We have seen a large number of satellite speaker packages give a good account of themselves, however for the customer that enjoys the full sound and still plays music from quality sources the larger enclosures are still the best. Over the past few years ultra high end, European speaker companies have partnered with some of the very notable Chinese speaker companies to provide aesthetically pleasing European designs, without the loss of performance and better on the wallet. The appearance in today’s modern designs quite often gets the thumbs up from the partner. Music streaming is the buzzword at the moment, it is possible to stream from any smart phone or computer set up to the internet almost at any price. An issue we are discovering is all the products are being bundled, as a single genre we have extreme levels of performance. It is important to match the appropriate streaming device to the correct product. The common result if it is not matched correctly that it will be just another electrical box in the corner once the technology buzz subsides. Musical streaming can provide fantastic audio reality with some products exceeding the performance of vinyl records. Music systems do not have to be complicated - a recent experience from a client was their 30-year-old

Property crystal ball RURAL property investors will now be able to accurately assess the productive potential of a property before they buy it, following the release of a new online tool, PropertyWise. PropertyWise was developed by GrainGrowers’ Information Services team to help potential customers assess the risk before investing in rural land, said GrainGrowers’ General Manager of Products and Services, Alicia Garden. “We noticed property values weren’t estimated on how much of a certain commodity a farm could produce or the condition the land was in, despite the fact that investors
buy farms to make money,” Ms Garden said. “So we set out to provide accurate data that would allow prices to be set according to the productive potential of the land.” PropertyWise uses 60 years of climatic data and 20 years of satellite imagery to build up a picture of the way a parcel of land has been used in the past and predict seasonal conditions into the future. It can tell how the land was managed, how well crops performed, when frost events occurred, when rain fell and how intense it was. “One thing our development team has noticed while
Enzo Raimondo
building this tool is that while the number of rainfall days across Australia is decreasing, the intensity of rain that does fall is increasing,” Ms Garden said. PropertyWise allows us to gather and interpret this information accurately right down to farm level, which will give potential buyers a more accurate picture of the way the weather will impact on their ability to use the land.” PropertyWise offers a range of comprehensive reports into any property in Australia, available online within 24 hours. You can find out more at www.propertywise.net.au

Vacancy rate drops WITH finance remaining more available and investors increasingly active in the Australian property market, they will welcome news that regional Victoria’s rental vacancy rate has fallen significantly in 2013. Last month the rate fell to 2.4 per cent, down from 2.9 per cent in October and a marked improvement on the four per cent rate at the beginning of the year. While this means it’s harder for renters to find a property, with fewer vacant properties to choose from; for those looking to rent out an investment property, signing up tenants to holiday homes over the summer or even letting out their own home, it is good news. However, that is the state-wide picture. It varies considerably between major centres with local factors such as the availability of good properties and the availability of work affecting the rental market. While the vacancy rate was just 1.7 per cent in Albury-Wodonga
and 1.9 per cent in Ballarat and the Central Highlands, both down on the previous month, it was a different story in Geelong and the Barwon region. There, the November rate was up slightly to 3.8 per cent and in Warrnambool and the Western district it was 3.9 per cent, although that was a fall from 4.5 per cent in October. Median house rentals in regional Victoria have been stable all year $300 for the past three months, the same as for the first three months of the year. After falling to $295 they picked up again by September. For apartment rents too there has been little variation. The November median of $250 was the same as in January, though down $5 on the October median. There has been some variation during the year with a low of $228 in June. Geelong, with a house rental median of $330 and an apartment rental median of $290 led the regional centres followed by Bendigo and Ballarat.

These warm, rustic bricks are celebrated into the adjoining dining area, which in turn flows conveniently into a gallery style kitchen - complete with Meile dishwasher and walk in pantry. This home offers ducted heating and cooling throughout, plus a split-system and two solar panels. The entry level also contains a wellpositioned study - away from the living areas, laundry with yard access and concealed storage along the hallway. Up the stairs will take you to the second living area. Light-filled, spacious and tiled, this room lends itself to a multitude of capacities, though its best
feature is by far the undercover balcony, with clear views across Cambourne Park and Wodonga’s infamous rolling hills. The very bottom level of the home holds the third living area - perfect for a man cave. Though with side access to the outdoor entertaining area, one might also like to fit a convenient bar to the room. This level also has two queen-size bedrooms with built-in robes, separate toilet and classy main bathroom. Finished with neutral tones and sharp lines, the bathroom offers a spa bath, plus shower with detachable head and inset shelving. The yard is an entertainer’s delight, with mature, shady palm trees, landscaped grounds and decked entertainment area. Parking-wise, owners enjoy a double lock-up remote garage, plus side access for a trailer. A must-see.

Solid effort r e p u S mer m u S ale S By KRYSTEN MANUEL
THE deciding half of the East Albury under 12 Maroon and Blue sides was played on Friday, with Blue emerging victorious. Having kept the lead from last week’s game, the final score sat at 119 to 93, though Maroon coach Cameron Diffey said his boys put up a solid fight in the face of several missing players. “The boys did well, he said. “There were a few unavailable with holidays and things so we were a bit short, but they battled it out well. “They got the runs in the third last over so it was fairly close to the end. “But they had a lot of fun it was high excitement with the two teams playing each other. East Albury Blue coach David Grant said despite the promise of competition, the match was more about the development of skill and celebration of personal achievement. “We all train together and essentially we’re one team divided in two with 28 boys in total, he said. “We don’t focus on the win, we really don’t take much notice of the score during a game. “The boys are competitive, they try really hard, but at the end of the day it’s about having fun and developing cricketing

skills for later in their career. Both sides are primarily composed of beginners, with rapid improvements seen in a matter of just weeks. On the Maroon side several boys have been pointed out as having improved significantly. “Bailey Clemson made 15 not out - he’s improved a lot, Diffey said. “Will Pargeter played pretty well. He made 11 not out on Friday night. “Myles Henman-Petersen, Sam Brown and my young fella
Max Diffey are only nine but they go pretty well for nineyear-olds. “And Praveen Patu wasn’t there on Friday but he’s done very well. “The team we have is a little bit younger than the other team, so we have a lot of nine and 10-year-olds. They all have talent but it’s under 12s so it’s a step up for them. The East Albury under 12 cricket team will be back on the pitch on 24 January after the holidays.

Local Sport Wheels of victory By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALBURY WODONGA’s fourth annual Track Cycling Carnival at the Lavington Velodrome was another success. The carnival was developed as a fundraiser event for both the Flutterby Foundation and Carevan Albury Wodonga by local man Brendan Washington. Both junior and senior cyclists from Wagga Wagga, Wangaratta, Shepparton, Bendigo and Melbourne entered, with over 60 riders participating. Riders of the calibre of former Olympian Steven Fairless from Shepparton as well as Peter Treloar from Wagga Wagga and Alan Bolton from Melbourne headlined the senior field and drew a healthy crowd of all ages, with Fairless taking out the 2000m Flutterby Foundation Senior Wheelrace. “One of the stand-out performances of the night was Riley Cork from Wangaratta
who ran the Peter Benton Memorial Juvenile Handicap which is for under 13 riders,” Washington said. “That race is supported by the Lavington Lions Club and was first run in the ’70s.” Washington also had a win himself, taking out the Bill Washington Memorial Senior Scratch Race Event in honour of his late father. Other entertainment included a celebrity race event with Albury Mayor Kevin Mack and councillors David Thurley and Darryl Betteridge. “It was nice and warm, the atmosphere was good, we had a lot of spectators and lots of kids,” Washington said. “And we also had a couple of volunteer events which was a lot of fun.” Washington predicts funds raised will be in excess of $1,000 to be split between the two charities.

Climb to the top THIS month The Domestique Seven Peaks Series comes to the Alpine region to take on four of the state’s most challenging climbs. Over a three-day period, riders will take on the climbs to Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo and Dinner Plain. Kicking off on 28 December, the four rides form part of the Domestique Seven Peaks Series – a collection of free recreational bike rides organised to get riders of all abilities to experience the great climbs in the Victorian Alps. The series is a collaboration between The Climbing Cyclist – a site all about the joy of cycling uphill, and Hells 500 – a group of Melbourne-based cyclists who love the challenge of cycling in the hills. “Riders of all abilities are welcome to join the rides and registration is free,” Climbing Cyclist maintains. “We’ll let you know what to expect, offer you climbingrelated advice, encourage you to continue when you’re suffering and, ultimately, help you get through the climbs in one piece.” The rides are as follows: Saturday 28 December: Mt Beauty to Falls Creek, return (start 2pm) Sunday 29 December: Harrietville to Mt. Hotham, return (8am) Sunday 29 December: Mt Buffalo tollbooth to Mt Buffalo Dingo Dell, return (4pm) Monday 30 December: Omeo to Dinner Plain, return (10am) For more information visit theclimbingcyclist.com/domestique founder Matt de Neef said. “If you’re committed to completing the climbs, we’re committed to helping you. We’ll be like a personal tour guide, coach and motivational speaker, all in one. “We’ve ridden all the climbs and we’ve got plenty of experience when it comes to long rides.”
