Merry Christmas ■ Nowhere to hide as council zeroes in on dumpers
Anti-dumping By NICOLE WILLIAMS CARDINIA Shire Council has vowed to crack down on illegal dumping after a court battle over an incident in May. A 24-year-old Pakenham woman appeared in court on 5 December to face charges of illegal dumping and was fined $1000 and ordered to pay council’s legal costs. In May this year, the Pakenham Gazette published photographs of two people caught dumping a trailer-load of household rubbish on private property in McGregor Rd in Pakenham South. Following their publication, one of the offenders came forward to accept responsibility and identify the other culprit.
Stills of footage captured on 30 March this year show a male and a female dumping rubbish at a property in Pakenham.
One of the offenders came forward to accept responsibility and identify the other culprit.
Council’s Prosecutions Officer Owen Hardidge told the court the offender was apologetic, had fully co-operated with council and had also offered to reimburse council for the cost of the clean-up. Magistrate Gerard Bryant labelled rubbish dumping a ‘selfish act’, and said he hoped the penalty imposed would send a clear message to the community that illegal dumping was not acceptable. Mr Hardidge said Cardinia Shire was taking a hard stance on illegal dumping. “It is a frustratingly common occurrence, and council will continue to track down perpetrators of this anti-social crime,” he said. “We encourage residents to share information they may have on unlawful rubbish dumping. “It is a practice that shows a great lack of consideration for others, and it won’t be tolerated in our shire.” A resident of the property on McGregor Road where the rubbish was dumped on 30 March contacted council to report the dumping. The resident, who did not want to be named, said rubbish had been dumped on his property for about 10 years. Stills of footage captured on 30 March this year show a male and a female dumping packaging materials, including boxes and foam, at the front of the resident’s property. Residents with information about illegal dumping are asked to contact council’s customer service team on 1300 787 624 or mail@cardinia.vic. gov.au, or submit a form via Council’s website www.cardinia.vic.gov. au

CARDINIA U3A co-ordinators say their members are never too old to learn and they hope the community’s senior citizens will be able to continue to do so. For 15 years, Cardinia U3A (University of the Third Age) has operated in Pakenham to give the Cardinia Shire’s senior citizens the opportunity at further education. Classes include art, computer sessions, music classes and discussions groups such as mythology and philosophy. Cheryl Neilson has been volunteering with the group for the past 12 years, and recently took on the role as president. Ms Neilson said the groups are open to any mature aged adults and welcomes any volunteers with a special talent to take classes. “It doesn’t have to be elderly people, it can be anyone over
about the age of 30,” she said. Ms Neilson said the group would love to see more tutors and volunteers to secure a safe future for the group. “We want to maintain a sustainable organisation and viable business,” she said. The group currently has about 200 members and low membership fees mean the opportunity is available for all. Ms Neilson said organisers receive great feedback from the community about the classes, with many learning new skills they had never come across before. “It’s never too late to learn,” the president said. Local identity Ron Topp was the past president of the group, and Ms Neilson said the hard work put in by the outgoing president was hugely appreciated by all. “That’s part of what we are
all about, making sure that everyone knows they are valued,” she said “It’s all about a welcoming atmosphere.” With about 20 volunteers at the centre, there is plenty of room for more and Ms Neilson said the committee welcomes any new ideas for classes. “Each person brings their own area of expertise to the centre,” she said. “We are welcome to any new ideas if a volunteer wanted to run a new class.” Ms Neilson said the facilities are also available for hire and the low-cost fees and variety of classes mean everyone is able to get involved. “Classes are available for all capabilities and experiences, including, beginners, intermediate and advanced,” she said.

Helper app a real find a result of their emergency, making it difficult for Triple-zero operators to get the information they need to dispatch emergency services. “The location of a caller is the first most important piece of information the Triplezero operator needs. “This app has the potential to gather that information quickly and accurately.” Victoria police do not yet provide this service but a project is underway to investigate the best way to connect Victorians to police for non-emergency matters. The new VicEmergency website was also launched this week along with the new Fire Ready App. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said the website will allow Victorians to access vital emergency information from one website. “Victorians will no longer have to visit different websites to access important emergency information, now there is one source of information and advice to help people prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies,” he said.

PAKENHAM police are encouraging residents in rural areas to download the new Triple-zero app for mobile phones. The State Government welcomed the launch of the new app that will help people calling Triple-zero to identify their exact location. Senior Sergeant Trevor Vondrasek said the app was a great idea, particularly for those in the rural, country areas in Cardinia Shire whose location might be hard to track. He said it would be useful for residents in places such as Labertouche and into the hills. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said the Emergency+ app was a federal initiative that connects users to Triple-zero and uses smartphone GPS technology to give the user their exact location. “People calling Triple-zero may be in unfamiliar surroundings with only limited understanding of their location details,” he said. “They can also be under great stress as

City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett and councillors Wayne Smith, Susan Serey and Rosalie Crestani with winners of the Fresh Words Young Writers Competition.
CASEY’S young wordsmiths were recognised last month for their creativity and flair in the Fresh Words Young Writers Competition. The winners of the sixth annual competition, held by the council, were presented at an awards dinner on Thursday 21 November. There were seven winners and 12 finalists announced out of the record number of 129 entries. Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett presented the finalists and winners with their awards at the dinner. “Words can shape and influence our world and in the hands of skilled and talented writers, can inspire people in their millions and leave lasting impressions on all those touched by them,” he said. “Tonight, I’m reminded again of just how impressive
and talented the young people in the City of Casey are. “I would like to congratulate all of tonight’s participants for their skill and enthusiasm.” Guest speaker at the awards was Lili Wilkinson, author of young adult fiction including Scatterheart, Angel Fish and A Pocketful of Eyes. Ms Wilkinson encouraged the emerging writers to work hard, take every opportunity to develop their skills and shared her own journey about becoming a published author. The competition was open to young people in years seven to 12, in the categories of creative writing, poetry and lyrics and English as a second language. Entries were judged by a number of criteria, including the expression of ideas, the accurate use of spelling and grammar, vocabulary and originality.

MAUDIE Shackleford used to write on anything she could get her hands on. As a teenager growing up in Zambia, South Africa, the established author used to write stories on brown wrapping paper because her family couldn’t afford anything else. Having just released her sixth novel, her first in English, at bookstores in Narre Warren and Berwick this year, the Emerald resident has come a long way from those days of scrawling on discarded paper. “I was always writing, I started writing when I was 12-years-old,” Maudie said. “When I was 12 I had nothing to write on so I’d go to shops and ask for wrapping paper to use. We weren’t well off and couldn’t afford anything else.” Maudie’s new book, An Upside-Down Tale, is for young adults and combines the lives of a child from the Australian outback and a child from a shantytown, close to Johannesburg. In this way Maudie has used her new novel to explore her South African heritage while keeping loyal to Australia, where she has lived for the last 40 years. “I spent my teenage years in Zambia but it was politically very unstable. We moved to Canada for four years, first in the Rockies, North of Vancouver and then to East Canada,” Maudie said. “Then I moved to Australia with my husband and two sons.” Maudie wrote her first novel in Afrikaans when she was a 19-year-old growing up in South Africa. Always keen to explore her life’s memories through her writing, Maudie has used An Upside-Down Tale to address another of her passions - wildlife. “I started an animal shelter in Emerald in 1983 where I looked after hurt animals that came out of Beaconsfield,” Maudie said. Returning to her love of animals, Maudie’s latest book includes a third character, a giant duck from Outer Mongolia, which leads the others

Once in South Africa the characters find themselves in an impoverished south-west township which Maudie notes is very much like the towns that the late Nelson Mandela gave so much of his time in order to help. “All the characters combine. They meet up and their adventures take them from Australia to South Africa and back to Australia,” she said.
“My book is very topical in that it involves a township from outside Johannesburg and it investigates what happens to the kids who live in townships like this.” An Upside-Down Tale is now available at Dymocks at Fountain Gate in Narre Warren and Collins Bookstore in Berwick, and can also be ordered through the publisher’s website www. sbpra.com/MaudieShackleford

THERE is a spirit called alcohol Which comes in various guises; Beer, champagne, wine and cider, Regarded all as prizes. It’s good for cleaning and preserving And killing pestiferous bugs, But when humans imbibe it, as they do, Weird behaviour ensues - they’re thugs! It attacks the brain and other tissues It dumbs and numbs good manners It causes accidents and deaths And it’s advertised with banners. Of all modern drugs it is the worst, It has infiltrated all classes! O Lord, when will its bubble burst? When will humans clean their glasses? It blinds the mind, it addles the brain, It causes violent thirst; Why don’t they pour it down the drain? By the Devil it is cursed! The Bible and science judge it alike; Wine is a mocker, strong drink rages; New wine’s OK, in the cluster The Bible’s proclaimed that for ages. Why can’t they see it? Why don’t they flee it? Why don’t they care? Why so unfair To themselves and to others who share This planet? Why’s the word “No” very rare? Alcohol ruins the reason. No time is always the season To sip and to drink and to make the breath stink At least I can say, “It’s not pleasin’!” Jocelyn Grant, Hallam.

I AM a Muslim woman. I have lived in the Western world (Canada, USA and Australia) for over 25 years now. Every year, I look forward to the festive ambience and the beautiful decorations that are linked with the Christmas season. Even though my family does not observe Christmas as a religious tradition, we do enjoy the Christmas spirit, which means kindness, generosity, being with family and loved ones and spreading goodness all around you. The Christmas spirit hence translates into values which are recognised and upheld universally by people of all cultures, traditions and faiths. As a person of my own faith, I would have no qualms in saying that I would never be offended by Christmas festivities, whether that means decorations being put up all around town, or displays of Nativity, or related activities, just as I would never be offended by celebrations of any other religious or cultural festival that in spirit spreads goodness, kindness and evokes a deep sense of happiness. Merry Christmas to all residents of Casey, Melbourne, Australia and the world. Naureen Choudhry, Narre Warren.

Honour brings tears of relief Jake Ward CRANBOURNE’S pounded the pavement for 110 kilometres last week to raise money, increase awareness and honour those lost to cancer. Mr Ward, 28, spent almost 19 hours on Saturday 7 December running around the City of Casey and Frankston to raise as much money as he could for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). And that he did - managing to generate just over $8000 in donations which will go towards finding a cure for the disease that has taken the lives of those close to him. Mr Ward set off at 5am last Saturday to start his 110km journey, a distance he chose as it was more than an ultra-marathon of 100km. He left from his Cranbourne home, ran around Casey, made his way to Lysterfield Park then back to Cranbourne, then headed to Frankston Pier and ran along the beach before returning home. Mr Ward decided to do the fundraiser for a number of reasons, including the fact so many people were affected by the disease. “I’ve had a cousin who past away from breast cancer years ago, he said. “I’ve also had family and friends affected by this horrible disease. Mr Ward said his family does a fundraiser each year, along with his football club, so he decided he would do one by myself and set himself a
huge challenge. He said the run was both physically and emotionally demanding, but the great community support he received kept him going. “The run, physically, was challenging as my feet and ankles were in so much pain towards the end, he said. “Emotionally I was in a great state until I finished, then I cried, but never once thought about giving up. “The whole run was a highlight - being on Triple M, Nova and SEN was good, having laughs with friends and family along the way, police driving past for a chat and strangers tooting their horn and, of course, finishing. Mr Ward said he had a target to raise $5000, so he was overwhelmed to blow that out of the water and received so much support throughout the run. “I received help all the way, he said. “Friends and family saw me start at 5am and my cousin Paul Eaton drove the whole way. Then friends and family ran with me almost the whole way and they also met me at certain points to cheer me on. “I just wanted to thank all the kind people that gave up their time, donated their money and supported me along the way. “I feel like the luckiest man in the world with the support I received, I felt like a celebrity.

THE Rotary Club of Cranbourne has swung into action to lend a helping hand to make life a lot easier for a local family. The club held its annual charity golf day last month at Ranfurlie Golf Course and managed to raise $10,000 with 90 participants. Last week the proceeds of that day were donated to the Patella family from Narre Warren South to help purchase a wheelchair modified car to safely and easily transport their son Damien around. Damien, 6, has severe global brain damage, epilepsy, microcephaly, and hypotonic cerebral palsy and is unable to crawl, walk, talk or feed himself. His mother Wendy said he now weighs about 26 kilograms, so it was becoming a lot harder for her to transport Damien around. “Damien is growing quickly and I now struggle to lift Damien out of his wheelchair and into the booster seat in the car,” she said. “Currently I keep bumping one or both of our heads on the door frame and have injured both my shoulders and sprained my ribs lifting him.” Ms Patella said she needs to raise $70,000 to purchase a suitable car, like a Kia Carnival, and then have it modified to cater for a wheelchair. The government provides $10,000 towards the modification, which costs a total of $34,000. Ms Patella said the donation from the Rotary Club had doubled her fundraising efforts so far.
The proceeds of the Rotary Club of Cranbourne’s annual charity golf went to Wendy Patella, to help her purchase a wheelchair modified car so she can transport her son Damien around. “It reminds us all that there are some very good people in our community, willing to lend a hand,” she said. “When I accepted the cheque in person I thanked Cranbourne Rotary for their time, consideration, understanding and generosity toward my family and I. “I didn’t expect that a 15 minute presentation about us to the Cranbourne Rotary members would have resulted in such an amazing donation.”
Ms Patella is now seeking support in any way possible from the rest of the community. “Next year I will be approaching local businesses for donations and I hope to sell six advertising positions on the doors of the new vehicle for $3500 to $5000,” she said. People can also make a www.GoFundMe.com/DamiensHelpingHands or search ‘Damien’s Helping Hands’ to follow his journey on Facebook.

Seniors partying in style By LACHLAN MOORHEAD NARRE Warren Senior Citizens Club members celebrated Christmas in style last week when they held their holiday break-up party on Wednesday. The all-day celebrations were held at their club and consisted of several events throughout the morning and afternoon including a concert, a Christmas lunch catered by Southern Star Caterers and a carols performance. Narre Warren Senior Citizens president Bernadette Gonsalvez said the Christmas celebrations were nothing short of “grand”. “Members walked in to find the hall decorated beautifully with tinsel and streamers, balloons and fairy lights sheathed in tulle,” she said. “The tables were set with lace cloths, serviettes folded in red and green tapers and Christmas songs playing through their sound system. “Members were also treated to a variety concert put on by the Tuesday morning Sing-a-long Group, then the raffle of 12 Christmas hampers was drawn, followed by a lunch with a choice of meats, a variety of salads and yummy desserts,” she said. Following the Christmas feast and spinning wheel prize draw, Ms Gonsalvez thanked members for their faithful attendance and support throughout the year and looked forward to seeing them again in 2014. When the party finished, members were heard commenting on the success of the day, with one 23-year member remarking that it was the best Christmas break-up party that the Narre Warren seniors had ever had.

Appeal makes the connection Hampers THE launch of Connections UnitingCare’s Christmas Food and Gift Appeal will provide an extra helping hand for those in need in Cardinia Shire. Eastern Victoria Region MP Edward O’Donohue helped the organisation launch its annual appeal in Pakenham on Friday. Last year the annual Christmas appeal supplied more than 6000 gifts and 600 hampers to families in need during the festive season and this year organisers are hoping to provide even more for the community. Donating the first gifts under the tree at the office in Pakenham, Mr O’Donohue said community organisations such as Connections were particularly important at this time of year for people who are struggling. “Pakenham and the surrounding corridor is experiencing significant growth which is placing pressure on a range of service providers, including those for people who are in vulnerable and in challenging situations,” he said. “It is wonderful that Connections can offer this extra assistance at a time of year when everyone, particularly children, deserve to have a smile on their face. “I urge anyone in the local community who is able to spare an extra gift or some tins of food to donate it to this wonderful appeal.”
Connections’ manager of community relations Matt Clear said the beauty of the appeal was that the food and presents go back to people in the community who need it most while community relations officer Kirrilee Torney said the presents and hampers would be delivered in the lead up to Christmas Day. “The community has been really generous,” Ms Torney said. CEO Angela Forbes said the appeal delivers important Christmas items directly to those who are most in need with case workers, sometimes hand-inhand with their clients, selecting items that have been generously donated by members of the community to give to their family members on Christmas Day. “We are asking our local community to help us again this year so that we can spread the Christmas cheer to as many individuals and families as we can,” she said. “We are in desperate need of nonperishable food items and gifts for newborns and teenagers.” Donations can be dropped off at the Connections Pakenham Office at 42a Main Street or at any Connections offices located across south-east Melbourne. For more information about the work of Connections or for office listings, visit connections.org.au.
of hope AS PAKENHAM residents prepare for Christmas, good-hearted volunteers have donated their time to help others do the same. Volunteers have been preparing the ’hampers’ for distribution for the 4Cs (Cardinia Combined Churches Caring). Food and toys are distributed to those in need around the shire in time for Christmas and this year, so many goods were needed that the distribution centre moved to Pakenham Racecourse. To cope with demand, 4Cs will not be packaging hampers this year, but will distribute the goods as needed per family or individual. The goods will be collected from the racecourse later this week.

SNEAKING your pets a slice of Christmas turkey or a piece of chocolate this year won’t go down well with Pakenham vet Dr Nick Emerton. Dr Emerton from Greencross Vets in Pakenahm said it was important that four-legged friends were looked after this festive season. “Chocolate seems to be in abundance during Christmas time, however it’s important to keep these out of reach of our pets, he said. “Theobromines in chocolate will cause seizures and heart failure. “If any is eaten, get your pet to you regular vet (or emergency clinic) where vomiting can be induced. “ Dr Emerton said Christmas tree pine needles, power leads and decorations are very tempting for some pets to chew and can lead to serious problems. “This is the time of year that our pets are very intrigued by the big tree sitting in the corner of the lounge with lots of shiny, hanging toys on it that they assume is especially for them, he said. “If you have a large dog or a tree-climbing cat, use a strong cord or rope to secure the top of the tree to a wall to ensure it won’t fall on a curious pet.

A CLUSTER of local kindergartens is giving back this Christmas. Kinders Together has been supporting two very important charities that touch the lives of children within the community and across the globe. A small Christmas gift for staff has been purchased from Oxfam along with a twin doll for each centre. The twin dolls are hand made by mothers with disabled children through the Batsiranai craft project in Harare, Zimbabwe, in Africa. For every doll that Kinders Together has purchased, a twin doll will be given to a disadvantaged child whose family has been affected by HIV/AIDS in some way. Staff are also encouraging the dolls to be incorporated into each centre’s program. Closer to home, Kinders To-

CRANBOURNE SOUTH
FROM PAGE 1. UPON entry to this secluded Cranbourne South property, one thing is immediately clear privacy is key. The spectacular main residence is set well back on the 10-acre block, with a meandering bitumen driveway showcasing the majesty of the property. First the wide open expanses of its spacious grass fields, then its ornamental lake, gazebo and giant iconic palm tree - the property is showcased bit by bit, unveiling one piece of majesty at a time before visitors even step foot inside the main house, dating back to the 1870s. But upon entry, its sheer beauty is instantly breath-taking. Originally constructed in approximately 1870 on the Mornington Peninsula, the main house’s high ceilings come to the fore in the primary hallway. The attention to detail is just part of what sets the house apart from any other. The 14-foot ceilings highlight the sheer size of the stunning chandeliers - with a ceiling rose detail. A Baltic pine polished floor gives an early indication as to just how stunning a wood finish throughout a home can be. The weatherboard homestead has been extensively renovated, using only the very best materials - in keeping with the property’s Victorian appeal. All the home’s feature rooms contain magnificent marble fireplaces, and even the guest bedrooms are more spacious than most main bedrooms. The entrance from the main passage into the grand lounge/formal dining is just that - grand. It gives an ideal impression as to just how meticulously thought-out the homestead is.
Giant bay windows look out through a deep verandah and on to the rolling green fields at the front of the property. The main residence includes three bedrooms, a huge study, grand formal lounge/dining, family room and informal dining room. All told, there are five marble and cast iron fireplaces. A separate, private hallway leading off the main bedroom leads into a walk-in robe, toilet and bathroom with traditional tiling. Brilliant leadlight sash windows look out from the fully tiled master bathroom onto the fountain that takes pride of place in the expansive backyard. The main bedroom, itself, has a door that opens out onto the verandah overlooking the garden. Both bathrooms feature stylish, yet highly practical wooden dressers and in every room in the homestead there is an abundance of storage space - none of which intrudes on the overall feel or ambience of each room. The property features garden views from virtually every vantage point - there’s even a view from the study overlooking the fountain. The spacious open plan kitchen/ dining is a stunning combination of marble

bench tops and rosewood timber. The star attraction is a striking fireplace featuring a wall of hand-made bricks. Nothing has been spared when it comes to attention to detail, with an imported gas stove. The dishwasher door is even in the rosewood finish, sitting underneath a stand-alone centre island with ceramic wash-basin. The kitchen leads into a sunroom with bi-fold doors, which open into a covered entertainment area with a spa. A covered walkway leads from the main house to the annexe, a separate very large formal room - any man’s dream with a full size snooker-table. Over the snooker table is an unusual built-in lighting cabinet, which houses an overhead projector - perfect for your Saturday afternoon sport. To finish off there is also a professionally built wet bar. This stunning room has bi-fold doors that also open into the covered entertainment area. The house just flows from one jawdropping room to the next. A triple car garage; wine cellar; and additional bedroom complete with bathroom and toilet adjoin the annexe. To the rear of the main house is a floodlit tennis court, spectacular pool and separate
two-bedroom, two-bathroom self-contained cottage. More of a second home, it’s also wonderfully spacious - with a verandah overlooking the back garden. A five car garage or workshop accessed by a second entrance to the rear of the property with a heavy-duty concrete floor and ample lighting, is perfectly suited for boys and their toys. With play equipment for the little ones, and a second laundry or storage space away from the house, this property simply has everything for everyone.

In honour of harmony CRANBOURNE’S Sulochana Naidu and Lyndhurst Secondary College have one thing in common - they are both working to improve cultural harmony in the Casey community. This month, they were recognised for doing just that when they were presented with an honour at the 2013 Multicultural Awards for Excellence. Ms Naidu was given an award for meritorious service to the community and Lyndhurst Secondary College received an education award for its Multipride program. Ms Naidu migrated to Australia from Fiji in 1988. She got involved in community work in 2001 when she was invited to take up an executive position in the Gippsland Indian Association, where she has taken many roles in the past 10 years.
She is now the vice president of the Triveni Society of Victoria in Casey. Over the years, Ms Naidu has organised many events and activities to help different cultures assimilate into the community including family, community and spiritual camps, sporting events, picnics, religious festivals, harmony days in schools and fundraising activities. Ms Naidu said a major problem she experienced when she moved to Australia was culture shock and through her work she aims to help others through that. “Many go through this shock and need strong support in order to integrate with the local culture,” she said. “Our culture provided a refuge for many who experienced identity crisis, lacked self-confidence, were victims of domestic violence and would have been lost into the world of drugs and alcoholism.
Medically Speaking
“Hence my efforts to keep our traditions and culture alive provided a strong base to support those who were feeling lost in their new homeland. “Further, I’ve used my culture as a stimulant to participate in other cultures and take advantage of the opportunities the country offered.” Ms Naidu said she aimed to create harmony and understanding between the diverse cultures in Casey. “The world is a global village,” she said. “However, due to the misunderstandings and wrong myths about different cultures and faiths, peace and harmony is disturbed. “Active involvement and understanding of other cultures removes any ill feelings and wrong ideas we have about other cultures.” Ms Naidu said she was thrilled to receive the award and it was an incentive to continue with her passion for
promoting harmony in the multicultural community of Victoria. Lyndhurst Secondary College was recognised at the awards for its Multipride program, which it introduced when it had a significant increase in students from migrant and refugee backgrounds from about 2008. The school began experiencing racially motivated incidences and took swift action. A working group of staff and students was formed, including those who were involved in the incidents, who met on a weekly basis. The group has since run lunchtime activities, participated in leadership programs, developed partnerships with the council and multicultural organisations and speaks at assemblies. The school has experienced a change in school behaviour and has now started promoting the Multipride model to other schools.

Twilight Christmas THE Christmas Farmers’ Market will again feature a family festival at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. The whole family can enjoy the wonderful park surroundings as the venue prepares for and celebrates the festive season. The Rotary Club of Berwick and Father Christmas will welcome parents and their children to the twilight market. Organisers say they want to reward their customers who have made the market a greater success this year. Customers will enjoy two gifts - the outstanding quality of farmers’ products and a range of treats for their children. The children’s activities will include face painting, a jumping castle, play-
ground fun, bubble generators, lollies, balloons and other goodies. Customers can enjoy a coffee or brunch while the youngsters safely burn energy in the jumping castle. The farmers are in a festive mood. There are more than 50 stallholders who will offer fresh farm products. The vegetable selection ranges across the alphabet - from asparagus and beans, through to zucchini. There will be delicious seasonal fruits - from apples and cherries to raspberries and strawberries. The wide range of high quality meats include many cuts of beef, lamb and pork and there will be hams and sausages of many spicy types. Shoppers can add free range eggs and
a selection of fish. Plus there is a huge range of biscuits, breads, cakes, cheeses, chutneys and jams, garlic, olives and oils, pastas, herbs and spices, teas, wines and beers. Many products will be grift wrapped and this may give customers the answer for a different gift. They are encouraged to enjoy the Christmas present and have fun with their children. Rotary Club of Berwick Farmers Twilight Market is at The Old Cheese Factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick, on Monday 23 December from 4pm to 8pm. Parking is free. Inquiries to Joe Collins at jco33418@ bigpond.net.au.

DESPITE the cacophony of screaming girls at Westfield Fountain Gate last week, it was still easy enough to hear the soulful tones of Victoria’s home-grown pop star Taylor Henderson. The X-Factor runner-up stopped by the shopping centre on Thursday afternoon to perform three acoustic songs for a crowd of adoring fans outside Switch Restaurant before sticking around to have a chat with fans and sign their memorabilia. Since X-Factor finished this year, Taylor has signed with Sony Music Australia and watched as his single Borrow My Heart debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart. The single was also certified Platinum after it sold 70,000 copies since its November release. Taylor was a finalist on Australia’s Got Talent in 2010 before making waves on X-Factor this year.

PJs and onesies on show THERE was no mad rush for children getting ready for kindergarten when Rangebank Preschool held its pyjama day last month. Director Barbara Ryan said both children and staff enjoyed the event on Wednesday 27 November, where they came to preschool in the pyjamas and onesies and shared breakfast together. “All enjoyed the special treat and comparing their PJ’s with their peers,” she said. News photographer STEWART CHAMBERS was there to catch all the action.

Giveability Day a big hit By LACHLAN MOORHEAD WESTFIELD Fountain Gate was a sea of yellow earlier this month as volunteers from the shopping centre and Yooralla celebrated Giveability Day. Giveability Day is celebrated in July and December by Westfield Shopping Centres nationwide, with Fountain Gate raising money for their specific partner Yooralla Children’s Services. Throughout the day 55,030 people attended and got involved with the face painting, stilt walking, balloon modelling, sausage sizzle and the champagne bar. The petting zoo was a definite hit, while many Christmas shoppers also donated gifts to Yooralla, which were wrapped by volunteers on the day. Helping out at Westfield Fountain Gate on Giveability Day, Saturday 7 December were 15 volunteers, including five from Yooralla and the rest from the shopping centre’s management team. Fox FM broadcasted live from the centre during the events and 50 people won Village Gold Class tickers throughout the day.

Like night and day PAKENHAM and Merinda Park are set to face off in a Premier grade day-night blockbuster at Toomuc Reserve early in the new year. The clash, scheduled for 11 January, will see Jess Mathers and Jarrod Armitage do battle with the likes of Chris Smith and Russ Lehman and serve as a preview for a potential finals encounter later in the season. The game will be played at Toomuc Reserve’s main ground and start at 3pm. The first innings will be completed by 5.30 with the second starting half an hour later and finishing under
lights between 8.30 and 9pm. White balls will be used and both the Lions and Cobras will have the option to wear coloured pants and shirts. The boundary will be roped in with the size between 65 and 70 metres. Merinda Park also has the opportunity to train under the Toomuc Reserve lights on 7 January from 7.30pm. The Cracker Jackson pavilion will be open for use on the day of the game, with fans able to watch the game from the balcony with a few refreshments. A beer booth will be open downstairs as well.

NEWLY-CROWNED Victorian Saloon Car champion Travis Lindorff is one of a rare breed of sportsmen who has experienced the satisfaction of performing perfectly under pressure. It happened to the 40-year-old from Kooweerup in his most recent outing when he piloted his Casey Accident Repairs VT Commodore - number 51 - to victory in the seventh and final round of the Championship Class series at Sandown. The final round of the series comprised of three races, Lindorff winning the first, running second in race two before producing the drive of his life to win the final race of the season. “Given the importance of the weekend that’s definitely the most satisfying win I’ve ever had.” Lindorff, who runs Casey Accident Repairs from his factory in Pakenham said. “The weekend went perfectly, winning race one, after putting the car on pole, gave me a real good buffer in the championship going into race two. Running second in that race basically wrapped up the title but the last race really topped off the weekend. It was a hard-fought race and I had a good driver (Gavin Ross) right on my tail the whole way. After the race he said I didn’t make a mistake and drove the perfect race... that’s a satisfying thing to hear from one of your peers.” Lindorff began his love for the sport in go-karts, roughly 20-years-ago, before progressing to racing a HQ Holden. He stayed in that class of racing for six years, then had eight-years-off before buying his current car from a neighbour, stripped it back to a bare shell before having it ready for racing within 18 months. “It’s a very controlled class and you can only do basic things to the car,” he said. “We all have the same brake and sus-
Travis Lindorff with his state champion trophy. 112321 Picture: CONTRIBUTED pension package, wheels, tyres, computer (ECU) and the camshaft is also controlled. You can’t go out and spend millions of dollars to dominate so it comes down to drivability and set up. The front cars are so close, the top six can sometimes be within three-tenths of a second so it comes down to smartness and experience.”
The six cylinder VT Commodores and AU Falcons may lack the power of their V8 counterparts but the rivalry between Ford and Holden remains as strong as ever. Lindorff, who has Holden blood running through his veins, hopes this year’s win will lead to a full season in the national series next year.

Warrior on point By RUSSELL BENNETT AT THE time Jay Ferriere joined the Pakenham Warriors Big V basketball side in 2012, he was the biggest signing in team history. Then 28, the Narre Warren local had spent four years leading the NCAA Division 3 side Manhattanville College after previous stints at Ringwood and Sherbrooke in Big V competition. Coach Ryan Rogers couldn’t contain his excitement at luring the point guard to Pakenham. “He’ll have a major impact,” he said. “When I was involved in championship level he was just an 18 or 19-year-old kid but even at that stage at Ringwood he was on the horizon of good things.” As per usual, Rogers’ basketball instincts were bang on the money. Despite persistent hamstring trouble, Ferriere averaged 10.2 points, six rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game over 13 contests. He took out the Golden Hands award at the Big V awards gala as the player with the best assists and steals to turnover ratio, and was also nominated for Defensive Player of the Year. Still, last season was one of frustration for the super-talented guard. “I’ve spent a lot of the off-season so far just trying to get healthy, which has been fun,” he said sarcastically. “Luck will have to play its part (next season) but I’ve spent a lot of the off-season strengthening my core and hips, trying to get rid of all those nagging injuries as well.” Now about to turn 30, Ferriere has his sights set on leading the Warriors to Division 2 glory. It’s a shared goal among the playing group and no-one is backing away from it. “I want to focus on being more assertive,” he said of his main individual goal. “There were times last year when, as Ryan has said, I was willing to just divert to other guys and let them play it out. “It’ll be more about leadership this season though. “After college I had done the leadership thing and I think I was just burnt out and over that kind of role. “Toppy (James Topp) is a great leader - he takes control of a team almost better than anyone

Jay Ferriere is set to play a defining role in the Pakenham Warriors’ 2014 Big V basketball season. Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT I’ve ever seen - but this year I’ll try and step up and act 30.” Ferriere says his hamstring is now “completely fine” after a season in which his physiotherapists were unable to get on top of the injury. “They kind of mismanaged it,” he said. “After three or four weeks they thought it was good to go but as soon as I came back it just went again and that caused another week or two out. “But it’s great now though - it’s always great after a month or two off.” It’s now all about the positives on the verge of the new season - and the Warriors have plenty of them on their side. “Guys like Jim (Viray) and James - Stowy’s brother - are real workhorses and as a guard that’s what you want because you know they’re going to get the rebounds and you don’t need to worry about crashing the boards so much - meaning you can leak out and it gives you a lot more room to play freely,” Ferriere said. “Last year we really struggled in the height department and Jeff Reid and I were relied on to go in and crash and that really kills any fast-break opportunities you might have. But this ... this will be a good year. “Ryan always recruits good guys - there are never any ego problems. It’s always just going to be about basketball IQ stuff that we’re trying to sort out and that comes as you play together.” And as for the inevitable question - yes. He is looking forward to the potential of linking up with boom recruit Chris Jones for a few jaw-dropping alley-oops. It’s just not as easy as it looks. “People always think that if you have a guard who can pass and a guy who can jump it should be pretty easy,” Ferriere laughed. “But it’s about being on the same page and even just having plays where it’s set up so that there’s help coming. You don’t want to put him in the position where someone is going to take out his legs!” Keep an eye on the Gazette in the new year for more on the Warriors’ stacked 2014 playing roster.
Finger win nail-biter By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION WHEN young Pakenham finger spinner Jesse Hayhow trapped Demons keeper Stephen Johnson leg-before late on Saturday afternoon, the Lions’ celebrations showed just what the nail-biting win over their local rivals meant. A wave of emotion washed over the ground at Toomuc Reserve as players came from far and wide to revel in what they surely knew was a potentially season-defining result against the powerhouse Kooweerup side. It was obvious how much the win meant to both the playing group and onlookers alike. But it was a result that seemed a mile away at tea, with Kooweerup - chasing 252 for victory - seemingly sitting pretty just one wicket down. Demons stalwarts Chris O’Hara (42) and Michael Giles (92) combined for a 122-run opening stand. But with the skipper’s wicket at 2/160, the Demons fell to 5/172 - showing just how much they missed the injured Shane Dole. Then, as they have all season to date, the young Lions kept their composure and finished the job - despite a pair of lower-order contributions from Johnson (10) and Premier debutant Cody Miller (12), who had played five games in the under-15s so far this season. The Demons were dismissed for 244 - just eight agonising runs shy of victory. It was a result that must surely have left the side’s leadership group wondering just what might’ve been. But for Pakenham, the win would have given the side yet another confidence boost and further belief that they could give this Premier season a real shake. Russ Lehman was nothing short of outstanding once again for the Lions, backing up his 5/44 in Round 6 against Merinda Park with a brilliant 6/85 from 31 overs on Saturday. Hayhow (3/74 from 24 overs) was also superb, claiming three of the other four wickets to fall. The Demons can’t afford to dwell on the result, and will get their chance for revenge straight away thanks to the reverse fixture as they host the Lions in a one-dayer this Saturday at Kooweerup Recreation Reserve. CARDINIA v UPPER BEACONSFIELD A young Upper Beaconsfield side was always going to be up against it after Cardinia’s imposing batting firepower was on full display on the first day’s play of their clash at E Gunton Oval. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Bulls posted the second-highest total scored so far in this Premier season 314. Alex (96) and John Nooy (56) put on a 129-run opening wicket partnership, while Si-
Big Russ Lehman was on fire with an even bigger sixwicket haul against the Demons. 112211 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS mon Parrott (88) came within just 12 of a quick-fire century. The Maroons, meanwhile, were led by the tireless efforts of seamer Kyle Gibbs who finished with 3/103 from an impressive 37 overs. Will Haines was the side’s leading wicket-taker with 4/57 from his 12 overs. But the visitors’ reply started disastrously on Saturday, losing three quick wickets for just 11 runs. Openers Matt Hutson (8) and Luke Willis (0) each fell, caught behind off Lucas Plozza - Hutson to Parrott at slip, and Willis to wicket-keeper Luke Turner. And the side just couldn’t recover, despite the efforts of skipper John Simpson (39) and Premier debutant Lachlan Harrison (trapped in front by Parrott for 74). Gibbs capped off a fine individual game, finishing unbeaten on 24. While battling some inconsistent form with the willow so far this season, Neil Barfuss’s all-around ability shone on Saturday - leading the Bulls attack with 3/41 from his 17 overs. Engine boost for Falcon By ALISTAIR KENNEDY UNTIL recently the idea of Australia’s iconic Ford Falcon being powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine would have been seen as sales suicide akin to the decision of Holden to build a compact Commodore back in the late 1970s, a decision that gave Ford market leadership for the next decade. With just three years left before the Falcon disappears from our roads the turbo engine is far less of a gamble than it otherwise would have been. The new EcoBoost engines are being added progressively across the Ford range and its exposure in the Falcon is likely to flow through to improved sales in other vehicles, including the recently unveiled Mustang. The Ford Falcon EcoBoost comes in three variants. The entry level XT sells for $37,235; mid-specced G6 at $40,835; and G6E at $46,735. Interestingly these prices are identical to those of the equivalent six-cylinder models which probably accounts for the slow sales of the EcoBoost to date. EcoBoost engines are smaller and lighter than conventional
petrol engines, with the combination of common-rail direct fuel injection, variable valve timing to reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. At the same time they deliver power and torque outputs around the same levels as larger, naturally-aspirated engines. The 2.0-litre Falcon engine generates maximum power of 179 kW at 5500 rpm and a substantial 353 Nm from as low as 2000 rpm. Compare these numbers to the 195 kW and 391 Nm of the Falcon 4.0-litre six and any doubts about performance should be allayed. Fuel consumption in the EcoBoost G6E that we drove is listed at 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/ highway cycle compared to the 9.9 L/100 km of the six and CO2 at 201 grams per kilometre against 235 g/km. All EcoBoost Falcons come with six-speed ZF automatic transmission, the manual option in the 4.0-litre XT not being offered. The big Aussie sixes are often used for towing so be aware that the capacity of the EcoBoost models is just 1600 kg,
Model range XT EcoBoost 2.0-litre turbopetrol four-door sedan: $37,235 (automatic); G6 EcoBoost 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-door sedan: $40,835 (automatic); G6E EcoBoost 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-door sedan: $46,735 (automatic).
well down on the 2300 kg with the 4.0-litre engine. The interior of the Falcon is spacious enough for five passengers although with my 1.8-metre height and declining suppleness I found it almost impossible to get into the driver’s seat, at its lowest setting, with-
out brushing my head against the top of the door opening and then scraping my leg against the bottom of the steering wheel, at its highest setting. Just another reason why SUV sales are booming. On the road the lower weight of the EcoBoost Falcon shows
up in noticeably lighter steering and more nimble handling. The steering feels more direct with plenty of feedback. Ride and handling are what we have come to expect from a car that’s made in Australia for local conditions. At idle the EcoBoost Falcon
sounds much like the 4.0-litre six. Under hard acceleration both sound much the same inside the cabin. Acceleration when overtaking is as good as a six, with negligible turbo lag. The cabin is quieter thanks to an acoustic windscreen, inner and outer dashboard insulation, an under-bonnet sound absorber, improved engine and transmission mounts and insulated transmission tunnel. Over the past two months we’ve done extended tests on both Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon and come away with the feeling that buyers may have over-reacted in their swing away from large cars. Cars like the Ford Falcon are just right for Australian conditions, particularly in country driving. Add the environmental benefits of the EcoBoost model and you’ve got a real car for the future. Inquire about the Ford range at David Nutter Ford, 749 Princes Highway, Berwick, phone 8768 2222, or Freeway Ford, 200 High Street, Cranbourne, phone 5991 2300.
This offer is not to be missed and will end 5pm December 31 2013.
Only vehicles purchased between the 14th and 31st December can receive this offer.
