Santa of smiles By NARELLE COULTER “HENRY couldn’t care less about having a photo with Santa, but I do,” smiled Janine Irwin as she watched her autistic son pose for photographs with Sensitive Santa at Dandenong Plaza. The Irwins are among the more than 18 families of autistic children who have enjoyed the simple Christmas ritual of a photo with Santa thanks to Dandenong Plaza’s Sensitive Santa initiative. Taking the energetic 11-year-old to a shopping centre full of people, noise and bright lights to meet Santa would normally be impossible for Janine and Henry’s father, Warren. “It is seven or eight years since Henry last saw Santa. It is normally just too scary. The lines are too long and we just can’t queue up,” said Janine. “But this is a comforting way to go about it,” added Warren. Sensitive Santa was the brainchild of Highpoint general manager Scott Crellin. “As a parent of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, I know how hard it is to create moments like this. By providing a calm environment, time for kids to adjust to their surrounds and build a level of trust, we hope to give participating families the opportunity to take home a beautiful photo with Santa. A memory and experience they may never have thought possible.” Sensitive Santa and other Santa set staff underwent special training. Photography sessions were organised before the centre opened to avoid unnecessary hustle and bustle. Prior to each 20-minute appointment, parents were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their family so that Santa and his helpers were fully briefed on each child - including triggers, interests and, importantly, what’s on their Christmas wish list. “There are an enormous number of children out there with difficulties like Henry’s,” Warren said. “This is definitely a step forward. It’s a great intitiave.”

More secret probing? By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong councillor Maria Sampey claims the council has launched a second “secret probe into her matters, soon after she took stress leave over an earlier confidential investigation. Cr Sampey has been off on leave since lodging a WorkCover claim against the council in November, accusing them of causing her mental distress and depression. She says soon after, chief executive John Bennie - currently on leave - launched a confidential internal investigation into her claims.
“It’s just another type of secret investigation,â€? she said. Cr Sampey said she was interviewed for 90 minutes by a council officer over “whether I was stressed out or notâ€?. She claimed the officer concluded there wasn’t any evidence the council caused Cr Sampey’s stress but showed little interest in the councillor’s documented evidence such as internal emails. “She did a bodgy investigation‌ it was a pre-determined outcome. “Apparently that’s what the council does to look after their staff‌ it’s all rubbish.â€? “I won’t be making any comment
over questions on this matter, acting chief executive Jody Bosman said. His response was the same when asked if the council’s investigation was a normal course-of-action or whether the probe had ended. Cr Sampey said she hoped WorkCover would investigate the conduct of Mr Bennie and recent mayor Angela Long over a “private and confidential probe they launched into her and Cr Peter Brown in May. Crs Brown and Sampey were accused of causing council staff to feel hurt and distressed while pushing for the repair of a botched foot-
path in Noble Park. The two accused councillors, adamant they had done no wrong, have fought for the public release of the investigation report. They have access only to a version of the report edited by M+K Lawyers. The council has persistently declined to comment on the matter or the cost of the probe. It does not intend to release the report for public scrutiny. “What upsets me is they send out letters that are marked strictly private and confidential, Cr Sampey said. “What have they got to hide?

Pair rescue woman from car attacker TWO good Samaritans pulled a man from a car during an alleged assault in Dandenong on Friday. A woman had just parked her car in David Street, opposite Dandenong Hospital, about noon on 13 December when a Doveton man, 36, approached. Police say he assaulted her and appeared to be trying to get into her black Volvo wagon. They want to speak with the men who pulled the attacker from the vehicle and held him, with help from hospital security, until police arrived and arrested him. He’s now receiving hospital treatment. Witnesses are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

More police hit the roads for the season By CASEY NEILL POLICE will spend an extra 120 hours on Greater Dandenong roads this festive season. Operation Invincible kicked off last weekend and is aimed at catching drink drivers. Targeted TAC funding will cover extra shifts to put more officers and patrol cars on the roads during hightrauma times. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol’s Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts
said his crew stopped 1063 motorists for preliminary breath tests over the weekend, most near hotels. “Five drivers were found to be over the legal limit, with the highest reading 0.117, he said. “The party’s over for these five drivers. “A variety of other offences were detected including four drivers without a valid licence. Operation Invincible will run throughout the Christmas period
Sharons
and into the New Year. “We’ll be covering more time periods than we would have otherwise been able to do, Sen Sgt Roberts said. And it’s not only drink-drivers on their radar. “It’s a warning to consider everybody else on the road rather than thinking about your own needs, like answering phones, running red lights, speeding... “ he said. “We will be enforcing all speed
offences, not just those that people would consider overly excessive. “We know for a fact that they contribute to trauma. And Sen Sgt Roberts said the efforts to combat trauma wouldn’t end with this operation. “Touch wood, we’ve had a pretty good year up until now, he said. “We hope that continues into the New Year. “We’ll continue to throw everything we’ve got at these issues.

THIS is the final edition of the Dandenong Journal for 2013. It has been an historic year for the 148-year-old paper, with the Journal returning to family ownership when it was purchased by Star News Group in the middle of 2013. In September the Journal reverted to its traditional tabloid size with a special issue marking the paper and Greater Dandenong’s ongoing revitalisation. The changes have been warmly welcomed by readers and advertisers. Thank you to all those who have contributed to the Journal throughout 2013 whether it has been via a letter to the editor, our Facebook site or a news tip. Your views, suggestions and comments are appreciated. The first Journal for 2014 will be published on Monday 13 January. Have a merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. - Narelle Coulter, editor

THEY’RE certainly not a bad group of ‘old bastards’. In fact, the self-titled International Order of Old Bastards (IOOB) are something closer to saviours this Christmas. Last week, the Melbournebased charity delivered a truckload of new toys as well as $1500 of food vouchers to Dandenong Benevolent Society - which has been swamped by families in need of Christmas cheer. IOOB member Ian Arrell, a former Dandenong CIB detective, said the order was giving away $20,000 of Christmas food vouchers to several charities in Melbourne, including the benevolent society and Dandenong Community Advisory Bureau. The charity raises money from about 200 luncheons involving 300 members from all walks of life. This year, it had given away $40,000 to help out families by individual request - in tough circumstances to buy necessities such as a wheelchair or a calculator. Benevolent society co-ordinator Margaret Ladner said the IOOB “saves my life every year. “They bring in so much stuff and it means we can help so many people. “If anyone comes in and they say they don’t have a toy for their child for Christmas, we help them.

He names Dolce and Gabbana, Balmain and Christian Louboutin among his favourites. “Dolce and Gabbana’s pieces are very sexy but they make it look so classy at the same time,” he said. “Balmain’s couture work is perfect, it’s the best I’ve ever seen.” And Christian Louboutin makes his favourite shoes. “He’s who I want to work with,” he said.

A DANDENONG North fashion student’s collection earned some valuable fans last week. Harry Katakouzinos, 21, received the Best Runway Collection award at Kangan Institute’s fashion show In Bloom at Federation Square. Myer women’s fashion general manager Nicole Naccarella and Sass and Bide for Myer managing director Megan Foster judged Harry’s collection Faceted the best based on design, construction and styling. Harry debuted Faceted at this year’s Melbourne Spring Fashion Week ‘MSFW: Emerg-
ing’ in August, alongside six other Kangan Advanced Diploma of Fashion and Design students. His inspiration was “faceted ... like the inside of a crystal” so his pieces featured hand-embroidery and sharp angles. Sass and Bide’s edgy and quirky feel also influenced Harry’s creations, which he said could move from casual to formal and vice versa. He’d put more than a year’s work into the four-outfit collection. “Even if just one random person wants me to make something for them I’ll be happy

THIEVES stole a wheelchair and football memorabilia from a disabled Dandenong man’s home last month. Police believe the thieves smashed a lounge room window to enter the Langhorne Street house between Wednes-
day 6 November and Monday 11 November. The victim, 45, was in Epworth hospital completing rehabilitation. They searched through each room and left with a red wheel chair, a North Melbourne
framed jumper, World War I medals and a Panasonic television. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are investigating and urged any witnesses to come forward. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The word is getting out By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS A VICTORIA Legal Aid program has found many women from new and emerging communities were victims of family violence but not ready to end their unsafe relationships. Settled and Safe, a 12-month program which has run since March, has tried to familiarise new arrivals with intervention orders and what constitutes family violence. A forum of project participants last Monday raised a number of barriers stopping victims from getting help. It was said many newly-arrived women would be stigmatised if they divorced. There was also reported reluctance to
break-up a family unit, which had already suffered the loss of family members due to homeland conflicts or misadventures during boat journeys to Australia. Some were also fearful about their children being removed by child-protection services. However there were reports that word was getting out. The forum was told of a group of Iranian-Australian men who want to campaign against family violence, and a ‘Flying the Flag’ campaign for respectful relationships in Springvale and Noble Park. Community groups at the forum were urged to at least refer victims to Victoria Legal Aid.
“It’s worthwhile to get some support and legal advice,” VLA family violence program manager Leanne Sinclair told the forum. “Going to a lawyer doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to court. We can give that woman options on what she can do and put her in connection with other services.” VLA managing lawyer Elissa Scott said many people arrived from countries whose laws and systems about family relationships were “very different”. “Through the project we’ve reached into a wide range of marginalised communities that have a real thirst for learning about the law.
“Many have very few links in the broader community and do not know how to get help to keep safe from family violence. “We trained settlement workers who work with these communities but who sometimes don’t know how to talk about family law and family violence problems.” During the project, VLA teamed up with groups such as Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition, African Communities Foundation Australia, Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau and Southern Migrant Resource Centre. The program has received funding up until February.

clients’ resilience. “Just starting life in a country without the language is a first act of courage.”
Council calls for more police in schools agreed to write to police chief commissioner Ken Lay, Police Minister Kim Wells and local MPs to reinstate the program axed in 2005.

THE air-conditioner was meant to be installed before Svetla Nikolova’s 60th birthday. She and her retired husband had been saving for months to replace their ageing home-cooling system. Then out of the blue on 6 October a tradesman arrived at her door saying he noticed her air-conditioning unit looked rundown. In several more visits, he produced a photocopy of a replacement at a “very cheap” $2300. “It’s cheaper putting it in now than in the summer,” he said. He required $1700 cash up-front. Ms Nikolova stumped up the cash the next day on 15 October the tradie provided her a receipt, name and phone number. He’d promised to install the air-conditioner in early November. There’s been no sign of him or the cooling system since. “I rang him to say what happened… he’d say it’s raining… he’d come in a couple of days… he’s very busy,” Ms Nikolova said. Unbeknown to her, the tradie had already been prosecuted by Consumer Affairs Victoria for dishonest trading leading to fines and jail time. A spokesman said the agency can prosecute a trader when “the volume of complaints suggest systemic issues”. To report a scam go to consumer.vic.gov.au or call 1300 558 181.

GREATER Dandenong Council is lobbying for the return of the Police in Schools Involvement Program. On 9 December, the council
find a job on the back of a 10-week English language course. These people know real challenges, real difficulties yet front up every day. “They have a smile on their face and knuckle down and try to make the world a better place,” Mr Ackerly said. “If they can maintain that in the face of this, then we have no excuse”. ASRC chief executive Kon Karapanagiotidis said it was possibly the worst of times for asylum seekers in the past 30 years. Still he is inspired by asylum seekers for their resilience, entrepreneurship and willingness to “risk everything” to save themselves and their families. “They are the true heroes of the ASRC and the community.” He said. Many were settling in Dandenong - a “home of hope”, thriving with multiculturalism and community spirit. “That’s the story we never get told. “We get told our way of life is being threatened... whose way of life? The 47 per cent born overseas? “Our way of life is this diversity in our community. “Our multiculturalism is what makes us the most liveable country in the world.” - Cameron Lucadou-Wells

Ali, a volunteer at ASRC in Dandenong, says he helps “lost” asylum seekers find their way. 112147
Many people at ASRC speak highly of Ali, an ever-smiling translator-IT whizadministrator who is ever-ready to help from the front-of-house. He speaks Hazaragi, Urdu, Farsi and Persian, a handy skill for helping clients fill in their forms and settle into the centre. Ali is a trained computer programmer hoping to find paid work. He can well relate to asylum seekers’ desperate plight. “A lot of people come here and look lost. They don’t have the language. I can predict their problems, what they’re going through. “If I can help them a little bit, that’s good.” At the opening, Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti said the ASRC was targeting two major hindrances for asylum seekers finding work - limited English language skills and a lack of access to employment services. This targeted job-seeking help was a first for the region’s asylum seekers. So far, three clients on the program have found work. Mr Ackerly finds inspiration from asylum seekers as “the people who lead me”. “They are the people who go out to

VOLUNTEERS are regarded as the lifeblood for “turning disadvantage into advantage” at the Asylum Seeker’s Resource Centre. The centre had grown out of “talk in a pub”, and is supported by an annual $3.6 million of philanthropy without a scrap of federal funding. It officially opened its Dandenong office on Human Rights Day last Tuesday, three months after opening the office’s doors. In that time, it has provided 181 new arrivals with job-training services and English language classes. The office runs on the good-will of a battalion of 28 volunteers - described by ASRC empowerment director Gavin Ackerly as “the coalface of the community”. “Without them the world would be a darker place,” Mr Ackerly said. One of the volunteers Suralini works as an employment adviser, helping up to five asylum seekers to get “job ready”. She trained as a commercial lawyer but wanted to do “something more in line with my values”. “I believe asylum seekers have the right to asylum. I want to be involved in the solution.” She speaks highly of her

YEAR 5 and 6 students at Mt Hira College have been learning about the history of Keysborough with the help of someone who has six generations of the Keys family in her blood. President of the Dandenong and District Historical Society Christine Keys recently spent time with the students speaking about her passion for local history. Christine was the ideal person to share her own perspective on the development of Keysborough. When George Keys arrived from Ireland in the early 1800s with his five sons and their families, he was a
new arrival with a mission. He settled near the Carrum swamp with the plan to develop a supportive community of neighbours and Keysborough was the result. From what began as a farming and market gardening community, with close links to Dandenong, Keysborough has continued to combine its green wedge quality with it continued growth of housing and industrial estates, balanced by its extensive recreational areas. The Mt Hira students discovered they had several things in common with the old George Keys. Most of their parents are also new arrivals who have

chosen Australia as their home and regard Keysborough as their community. Mt Hira College in Perry Road grew from the vision of the Turkish community. It shares a site with the Turkish Community Mosque in Greens Road, near EastLink and like Keysborough itself, the school is growing fast. As Grade 5/6 teachers Katie Silva and I were impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the students. I met Christine at the Dandenong and District Historical Society, where she volunteers each week. The society has continued to provide a dedicated
service to the wider community as a vibrant resource to catalogue and protect our past and link this to the values we bring to future planning. In response to a question from the students, Christine said she was proud to be a sixth generation descendant of a new arrival who chose this area to make a new home. She left the school more than ever convinced that we all have so much of value in our past and the lessons from our decendants often have keys to the values we hand on through our children. The children at Mt Hira have certainly learnt another good lesson.
NOBLE Park Secondary College is celebrating its 2013 dux, Allison Nguyen. She achieved an ATAR score of 92.8, with classmate Stephanie Yung not far behind on 91.8. The year’s Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) results were released on Monday, and Ms Dyson said the school’s overall average ATAR score had improved. “I’m always proud of the kids,” principal Pam Dyson said. “We’re a very multicultural school with 51 different nationalities.” Among other Greater Dandenong VCE success stories this year was Dandenong High School student Mukhtar Nazari, 17. He arrived in Australia aboard a boat as an unaccompanied minor in 2011, unable to speak English. His highest subject score was for English 41.88 out of 50 - and his ATAR score was 86.1. “I only spent about seven years at school,” he said. “I found it hard living without my family but I was determined to work hard to fill the gaps in my education and reach my goals.” Mukhtar now has his sights set on joining the Air Force.

Wulff resigns By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS FORMER Greater Dandenong chief executive Carl Wulff has resigned from his position on a Queensland city council during an investigation into alleged official misconduct. Mr Wulff resigned as Ipswich City Council’s chief executive on 13 December after the state’s Crime and Misconduct Commission took over the investigation. Mayor Paul Pisasale said Mr Wulff had resigned by “mutual agreement” after new information arose about “certain private transactions” undertaken by the council’s former chief executive. “In the course of monitoring this investigation, and due to a
development in the investigation, the CMC determined that it was appropriate to take over the investigation,” a spokeswoman for the CMC said. “In all matters it is important to note that everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence and all allegations should be treated as unsubstantiated until a final outcome is reached.” Mr Wulff had acrimoniously left Greater Dandenong Council in 2008 to accept the Ipswich post. On announcing his departure, Mr Wulff publicly criticised Greater Dandenong’s “part-time” councillors who at the time wanted to retain offices in Springvale and Dandenong and rejected outsourcing
council services to a private company. “They are asked to make very significant decisions but they are only doing a part-time job,” Mr Wulff reportedly told the Dandenong Star at the time. “At least at Ipswich (where councillors are full-time) I can work with councillors on complex issues where I have access to them all day every day to get them understanding the concepts and issues.” Days later, he was effectively sacked by councillors with a day’s notice. “The present CEO gave notice to resign two years into a five-year contract and said he didn’t have confidence in this council,” then mayor Peter Brown said.

Casting Christmas goodwill WORKERS at Nissan’s metalcasting plant in Dandenong South have sacrificed their Christmas bonus hampers, instead pooling the funds for the Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal. Nearly 180 staff requested their employer to donate the $6800 hamper bonus to the appeal. The company chipped in $3200 to make a total donation of $10,000 to help assist in the ongoing restoration efforts in the Philippines since October. Specialist Red Cross aid workers are helping to provide health, shelter, food, water and sanitation. Nissan Australia chief executive Peter Jones said the workers believed their contribu-

Dose of reality plea By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS ALLEGED data-fudging at Dandenong Hospital’s emergency department is hiding short-staffing and a lack of beds, says the Victorian Emergency Physician Association. According to the Herald Sun, 60 emergency doctors and nurses from the hospital signed a document claiming figures were being fabricated to make it appear untreated patients were being discharged or admitted within four hours. In response to the document, Monash Health and the Department of Health jointly launched an independent audit by Ernst and Young into emergency patient records at the hospital.
VEPA vice-president George Douros said members had been concerned “for some time” about the combined impact of four-hour rule federal bonus money and “severe” health budget cuts. Under this rule, the state’s hospitals must discharge or admit 90 per cent of emergency patients within four hours to receive a bonus $12 million. “Hospitals must not repeat the mistakes of the failed British four-hour rule, they must not game the numbers at the patient’s expense. “It doesn’t surprise me that data is being falsified. It’s no surprise that cash-strapped hospitals want that (bonus) money.
“When $615 million has been cut from state hospitals’ budgets, you can expect this sort of behaviour to occur.” He said emergency staff numbers had been cut by 25 per cent and cheaper trainee staff were replacing bettertrained staff in Victorian hospitals to cope with the budget cuts. “If data manipulation is occurring, it hides the problem that patients are there too long. “It also leads to confused information if the patient is shown on the computer to be in the wards but they are actually still in the emergency department. “Confusion can arise for example,
over who’s giving out the medication and has it already been given out.” Dr Douros said doctors and nurses who spoke up should not be punished for raising their concerns. Monash Health emergency medicine director George Braitberg said the allegations were taken “extremely seriously”. “Monash Health strongly believes in the transparent and accurate recording of information, and vigorously investigates any claim to the contrary. “We appreciate the concerns raised by our staff and take this matter very seriously and we will continue to support our staff whilst investigating the allegations raised.”
Club hopes to hold annual charity event ROTARY Club of Dandenong South East has raised more than $3000 for brain cancer research to honour a former member. The club held the first John Feldman Golf Classic on 6 December at Cranbourne Golf Course, named for their peer who died from a brain tumour several years ago. The $3200 raised will go to the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation. Almost 40 players battled it out in a tribute to the former Doveton lawyer, with win-
ner Paul Grove accepting the trophy from widow, Lee Feldman. Adam Feldman spoke to the participants about his father’s love of golf and his involvement with the competition’s organiser, the Rotary Club of Dandenong South East. Club president and local real estate agent Peter Curtis said he hoped to see this become an annual event and thanked major sponsor John Sculac from Dandy Truck Sales and Yugo Driving Rotary Club of Dandenong South East’s Con Meehan, John Feldman’s widow Lee Feldman and event sponsor John Sculac. Indecent attack witness sought A MAN grabbed and indecently assaulted a teenage girl in Keysborough earlier this month. Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) are appealing for witnesses to the incident on Hosken Street about 8.35am on Friday 6 December. Detectives said the man approached the 17-year-old student and tried to strike up a conversation. She refused to engage with the man but he grabbed her, dragged her from the roadway and indecently assaulted her. She broke free after the driver of a passing vehicle yelled out and disturbed the attacker, who was last seen running down Sharon Street. Police are urging the driver of this vehicle, believed to be a whitecoloured four-wheel drive, to come forward. The attacker is described as Caucasian in appearance, fat, aged about 30 to 40, balding and about 170 to 175 centimetres tall.
This offer is not to be missed and will end 5pm December 31 2013.
Only vehicles purchased between the 14th and 31st December can receive this offer.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST Winning eco-friendly industrial park DANDENONG LOGIS has transformed a contaminated, disused site into an environmental showpiece. The 154-hectare industrial business park has received this year’s Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Environmental Excellence award. The Dandenong Treatment Plant in Dandenong South closed in 1996, leaving behind highly-contaminated soil. In November 2005, the State Government announced a $150 mil-
lion, four-year land reclamation project to transform the 180 hectares into a bustling commercial and residential hub. The first land at LOGIS South, to the south of Greens Road, was released in 2009 and LOGIS North land, between Dandenong Bypass and Greens Road, was first released in 2011. There’s a regional wetland for stormwater treatment, rainwater tanks, native plants and mature trees to promote birdlife and wildlife access to Dande-
nong Creek, Class A recycled water to every lot, solar hot water and natural ventilation, and mulch made from recycled shipping pallets. There are more than 20 hectares of open space for recreation and LOGIS is the first industrial development in Victoria to introduce T5 energy efficient street lighting. Posts feature twin lamps that activate when the roads are busy and reduce to one active lamp when road usage decreases.

Bunnings ready to run V8 SUPERCAR champion Garth Tander joined the Bunnings Springvale team to officially open the new warehouse last weekend. The $41 million store replaces the existing Sandown warehouse and employs more than 160 people.
Centre manager Lauren Ridgeway said team members were looking forward to lending a helping hand in the community - including through regular sausage sizzles - and would provide free DIY workshops every weekend. “Bunnings is always look-
ing for opportunities to contribute to local causes and we look forward to providing assistance to more Springvale community groups in the future, she said. The store is on the corner of Dandenong and Centre roads, 849 Princes Highway, Springvale.

DANDENONG’S Laurel Lodge is becoming a sought-after location for film makers searching for a period setting. Earlier this year the historic homestead’s kitchen was used during filming of the ABC series, The Doctor Blake Mysteries. Now Laurel Lodge stars in a short film by Victorian College of the Arts film and television students. Memento Mori is a drama set in the 1870s and follows a maid who becomes enraptured by a brilliant photographer who makes his living photographing the dead. Much of the film was shot in the Laurel Lodge drawing room. The film crew wallpapered the room and brought in furniture and props to recreate the home of a wealthy family. Other artists wanting to use the historic building will have to wait until August 2015 because Laurel Lodge has been closed to the public for extensive restoration work. The hunt is on for tradespeople with appropriate heritage building skills to bring the grand old home back to its former glory. A DRIVER was ecstatic after beating a speeding fine this month on the back of a 40-year clean record - but the Dandenong magistrate wasn’t so cheery.
“Am I entitled to shake your hand?” he asked the presiding magistrate, who flatly rejected the offer. DANDENONG Market’s sustainable Christmas decorations have been welcomed as innovative and festive - but there’s no pleasing everyone. The Journal has received a few calls labelling the wooden trees and stars made from packing crates as “shocking”. “There’s no atmosphere. You wouldn’t know it was Christmas. Even Santa looked miserable,” one woman said. ABOUT 800 people attended Wallara’s annual concert at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University on Sunday 1 December - up from 220 people at the debut event three-years-ago. The Dandenong-based service helps adults with disabilities to live life to the full. Wallara’s new Sing and Sign Choir hit all the right notes with the audience - even those who couldn’t hear a word. It performed Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World in full voice and Auslan, the national sign language.

A DANDENONG student was presented with an award by the Governor of Victoria for a golden effort last week. Nossal High School student Dinesh Arulprakasam, 17, received the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award from Governor of Victoria Alex Chernov at Government House on Wednesday 11 December. The awards are the world’s leading achievement award for young people. Gold awardees are required to spend more than 10,000 hours in activities they have chosen themselves in the areas of physical recreation, skill, service, adventurous journey and a residential project. Dinesh said achieving the award taught him many great skills. “By completing my Duke of Ed Award, I have developed communicative skills, selfendurance and tolerance which will help me accomplish great things in life,” he said. One of the major activities he was involved in was volunteering his time in 2012 to help out at a primary school in Ecuador. Dinesh was one of 15 students who participated in the expedition which took 20 months of careful planning and preparation. “This process involved a lot of fund-raising, training in outdoor living as well as researching and planning our own itinerary for the full four week expedition,” he said. “Our project was helping out a local primary school called

Year of police progress THREE months into the role of Commander across Victoria’s Southern Metro Region and heading into the festive season, I thought it timely to reflect on the year that was 2013. Police across the region have achieved some great results this year. We’ve been recognised as best practice policing for the Police and Youth Leaders Engagement Team (PYLET) program operating out of Dandenong Police Station and have successfully rolled out a number of intervention services in partnership with local health providers and Medicare Local for those suffering from mental health issues - the Mental Health Integration and Co-ordination Unit (MHICU) operating across Port Phillip and Police, Ambulance and Clinical Emergency Response (PACER) in Narre Warren. One of the highlights for me since arriving in the region is witnessing the significant collaboration and commitment of government departments, agencies and partners joining together to deliver a safer community. Department of Human Services, Child Protection, Department of Justice, Corrections Victoria, the courts, Medicare Local, Local Government, schools, other emergency services and a myriad of community groups, just to name a few. Earlier in the year we faced some challenges in relation to anti-social behaviour on our streets and property damage, including graffiti. As such,

our members hit the streets as part of Safe South East, focusing on identified crime ‘hot spots’, namely our entertainment and shopping precincts and foreshore areas. As part of Safe South East, we also introduced Tactical Anti Crime Teams (TACT) across Greater Dandenong, Cardinia and Casey which have to date resulted in a significant reduction in our property crime through identifying drivers of this type of crime and working with local communities. On the road policing front, 2013’s been bittersweet. While the number of fatalities in the Southern Metro Region is quite a bit down on last year, at the time of writing this 29 people have been killed on local roads this year. That’s 29 people too many. Twenty-nine people who won’t be celebrating Christmas with family and friends. Twenty-nine people who won’t be bringing in the New Year. We’re working hard to get drug and alcohol impaired drivers off our roads, but there is still a
long way to go. We plead time and time again if you’re going to drink or take drugs, just don’t drive. Don’t get behind the wheel and don’t end up a statistic. For some people, the message still isn’t getting through. We’ve recently raised the issue of home security, or lack of, over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Our data shows the number of reported residential burglaries across the state was greater in January this year than in any other month. I don’t want residents living within Melbourne’s south-east to fall victim to this opportunist crime this holiday period. I don’t know if you’ve ever had the experience of being burgled, but I can tell you, those who have find it very traumatic - just knowing that a stranger has been through your belongings and been in your home. Don’t be a victim. Do something about it. Take steps to protect yourself. There are a number of handy fact sheets available at www.police.vic. gov.au One thing that continues to frustrate me is the number of people who leave small electronic items such as personal music devices and cameras as well as money just sitting in the centre console or on the seat of the car. Theft from motor vehicles is so easy to prevent, yet more than 10,500 reports were recorded by local police during the 2012-’13 financial year. Just don’t leave valuables in the car. If you can’t avoid it, at least
hide them in the glovebox or in the boot. Looking forward to the New Year, the region is excited to be hosting a number of festivals over the summer period around the bay, including the iconic St Kilda Festival, Australia Day celebrations, Midsumma Pride March in St Kilda, the Grand Prix at Albert Park and New Year’s Eve on the Peninsula. A lot of police planning goes into making these events a success - both from a safety point of view and the enjoyment of patrons. It’s the same message across the board. Enjoy yourself, but don’t push the boundaries with alcohol. I can reassure the Southern Metro community, and indeed across the state, that all available police are working on New Year’s Eve (including me) to do all we can to make the night safe and enjoyable. Local police will also be working closely with business owners across the Southern Metro Region into the New Year, developing strategies to reduce theft from shops. These thefts have a huge financial impact on our hard-working business owners, and it’s up to us as a community to do something about it. Some tried and tested options include installing CCTV and the employment of loss prevention officers. Finally, I wish each and every one of you a safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I look forward to continuing our efforts in 2014 - by working together we can make Melbourne’s south-east safer.
Mature artists By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS AGED-CARE residents in Doveton have moulded a series of ceramic works for their first group art exhibition. Under the sure tutelage of professional artist Olga Maxwell, the Chestnut Gardens residents have pottered with clay on a monthly basis. This month, they publicly displayed their colourful works.
Chestnut Gardens staff member Ashwin Lennox said the classes had been therapeutic as well as producing handy everyday items like jewellery bowls. “The residents enjoy making different shapes by hand. They apply the paint colours as they come to mind. “It took a little time to get everyone going but once they were it was a blast and everyone got involved.”

Time well spent has its reward By CASEY NEILL NOBLE Park Secondary College student Kayla Rizzo was shocked to receive a Noble Park Rotary award. The 16-year-old took home an Arthur Williams Junior Citizenship Award and a gold watch last month, for academic achievement and extra-curricular activities. The Rotarian who the award is named after championed and encouraged the efforts of youths within the community. “I was really surprised, because it’s one of the biggest awards I’ve ever received,” Kayla said.
“I didn’t really expect to receive an award. I thought everybody would be doing the same.” The Year 10 student said she’d received a number of academic awards, was involved with the school’s representative council and a drama group and was a school vice-captain. She has her sights set on a teaching career, specialising in English and Japanese. “I like helping my friends and students in general,” she said. “When they need help they come to me and I help them. “I just do it naturally by instinct.”

Cougars poised to pounce KEYSBOROUGH Cougars women’s basketball team is well into their first preseason in preparation for their inaugural season in the Big V competition. Players from different basketball backgrounds - Victorian Youth Championship, SEABL development and Big V - will feature in the team that will debut in next season’s Big V Division 2 Women’s competition. Coach Mark Hewish said the signs were good so far for the team, competing well on Wednesday nights playing in the Melbourne Metropolitan Basketball League (MMBL) against higher ranked opposition.”We’ve been playing MMBL on Wednesday nights and they’ve been doing really well against championship teams,” Hewish said. “Ringwood beat us by 15 and they came second last year in championship and we played Werribee last week, which finished first last year before being beaten by Casey in the finals, and we should’ve beaten them. “I think we’re 6-2, so we put them in that league so we can show that we can play in that league and show what we’re doing and we’ve had the whole team rotating through there.” Hewish wants to finish up the squad for
the upcoming season as early as possible and is looking for a balance between experience and youth for the inaugural season. “We’ve picked those eight last week and putting two more in next week and hopefully have our core group, except for maybe one spot before Christmas,” Hewish said. “That’s what we’re trying to get - a bit of a mix, just to have that poise and stuff that we need and take control of our youngsters. “If it all fits together we think we have a fair chance of getting in the top four.” Spots are still available in the squad if anyone is interested in fitting into the Keysborough culture - with a heavy emphasis on helping the next generation and creating community as well as playing hoops every week in Big V. “If they’ve got something to offer and they’re looking for a game, come on down and give us a bit of a look,” Hewish said. “One of the things I would say is it’s not about walking in and walking out - we want them to fit in as we’re a small niche family club and we want them helping out developing our kids as well as playing.” For more information about Keysborough’s Big V women’s team, contact coach Mark Hewish on mlhehwish@bigpond.com

ONE of the rising stars of Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club made her presence felt at the VicSpirit Under-18 Championships. Sophie Molineux, 15, from Bairnsdale, was one of the prime performers for the Gippsland Pride as she smashed 225 runs at an average of 75 and picked up eight wickets at 3.88 plus a hat trick. “Not really - I had no idea what to expect,” Molineux said. “I was pretty shocked, it was a really good week for the girls - it was good having a bit of contribution as always. “You always want to do
well and the girls got along and played as a team and it was a really good week.” Converted temporarily to a left-arm orthodox spinner, as opposed to her regular pacebowling on account of a back stress fracture, Molineux was thrilled to take a hat-trick, but thought the third wicket was not particularly there. “It was a bit lucky - but you’d take it,” she said. “Midway through the innings -they were four or five down come on to bowl and the first was a catch to short cover, next two were LBW and bowled.
“The last one was an LBW but I thought it was going down leg. “I can’t really remember it’s a bit of a blur.” Playing her part at Dandenong in the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association (VWCA) in a couple of first XI matches so far, Molineux has enjoyed her time at the club and especially playing alongside Australian representatives like Julie Hunter and Sarah Elliott. Molineux now plays in the VicSpirit Championships grand final, with her Gippsland Pride team taking on the Western Waves on Sunday 23 February.
