guishing. The area’s north-east industrial precinct was expected to generate 8000 jobs, while its western counterpart was meant to generate work for 7350. Armstrong Creek’s Keystone Business Park, in the north-east precinct, has been delayed indefinitely as it struggles to attract businesses. The estate’s high-profile sponsorship arrangement with Geelong Football Club collapsed last month, with the Cats writing off a proposed $2 million training facility at Keystone as part of the deal. Construction was expected to begin in June 2012 and finish in early 2013. A Carter Group industrial estate earmarked for the western precinct has yet to proceed. Former Geelong mayor Ken Jarvis criticised the GRREP during November’s mayoral election campaign, saying it had cost $10 million to establish but council’s attempt to sell its land had been “largely unsuccessful”. The Independent reported in August 2012 last year that City Hall had sold one lot in the estate. Council expected the 500-hectare estate to create 10,000 direct jobs. A spokesman told the Independent at the time that the market for industrial land was “very slow at the moment Australia-wide”.

Chip in for McKellar Centre, golfers urged GOLFERS will tee off for the region’s peak rehabilitation and aged care facility at Barwon Heads in March. Organisers said 13th Beach would host the 19th annual McKellar Centre Charity Golf Day on Friday 21 March. The event has raised hundreds of thou-
sands of dollars over the years, helping the centre, part of Barwon Health, pay for vital equipment and facilities. Teams of two or four players will contest the ambrose competition, with entries $155 a head. Play concludes with lunch and fundraising activities in the 13th Beach club-
house. On-course catering is also included. The organisers said entries were available by phoning Barwon Health Foundation on 4215 8906 or emailing nikki.lenaghan@barwonhealth.cog.au. The Independent is a sponsor of the McKellar Centre Charity Golf Day.
GEELONG council hopes to ramp up activity in its northern industrial estate following a “land revaluation”, according to deputy mayor Bruce Harwood. Cr Harwood confirmed a Queensland-based chemical company had bought a second lot in the development, called Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct (GRREP). The food industry company, which manufactures horticultural and agricultural chemicals, has bought an 11,000-square-metre lot to establish a purpose-built plant. City Hall expects the plant to employ 50 staff and indirectly create a further 70 jobs. Cr Harwood said City Hall had agreed to terms with the company but details of the sale were still confidential. “We want to get activity out there. We’ve had the land revalued and as a council we have come to an agreement. “We have a market valuation and a land valuation and there had been a gap. We’ve managed to close the gap and come to an agreed value.” The sale is the estate’s second since opening over three years ago. Two other industrial estates in the Armstrong Creek growth area lan-

Latest plan ‘gathering dust’ in City Hall
In brief
Osborne Park ‘Artz’ bid
Payed back
By NOEL MURPHY
OSBORNE Park, left in limbo for two decades, would become a major arts and cultural centre under latest plans gathering dust at City Hall. Earmarked for sale in a report commissioned by former mayor Keith Fagg that controversially painted City Hall’s finances red, the historic North Geelong 1858 mansion and surrounds could host a facility similar to Melbourne’s Abbotsford Convent. Artists in residence, exhibitions, events, markets, arts bodies, cafes and more could all be incorporated under the proposal, dubbed Os Artz. But for the past year the proposal
has gone nowhwere due to red tape, like other plans for the historic site. These include use as a pastoralist homestead, naval academy and submarine base, an army base, State premier’s residence and guest house. Osborne Park Association’s Cheryl Scott said City Hall had failed to capitalise on the site’s potential. The association lodged the Os Artz proposal over a year ago, she said. “It’s not meant to be a neighbourhood house but more an artisans’ workspace with the ability to showcase and exhibit not only their creative pursuits but also specific exhibitions depicting the history and heritage of Geelong.
“We’re not seeking to create a museum. “The proposal has done the rounds of various council departments and the CEO and is considered, apparently, not likely to receive a favourable response if presented to the full council. “More options are being considered and it may yet again go out for expressions of interest. “If our proposal was supported by council, however, we could apply for government, arts and heritage grants – which we cannot do currently,” she said. Ms Scott said council had to “think bigger” about Osborne Park but
stressed it must remain a community asset. The property hosts a range of activities under the association’s auspices, including markets, exhibitions, events and meetings. The site also hosts groups such as Geelong Historical Society, servicemen associations, model and engineering bodies. Ms Scott said the main buildings had minimal maintenance over the past 20 years, with the interior exactly as it was when the former Shire of Corio vacated after council amalgamation in the 1990s. Previous plans have included an extensive maritime historic village with links to Geelong’s waterfront.
Highton poet’s fertile ground for big literary awards By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN HIGHTON poet and teacher Brendan Ryan knows he will never escape his Panmure dairy farming upbringing. So the wordsmith uses his formative experiences to craft what reviewers have called “a clear-eyed and provocative vision” of the land and its farmers. Mr Ryan’s fourth book of poetry, Traveling Through the Family, has been listed for the $25,000 Premier’s Literary Awards. The book is also in contention for the main $100,000 award, Australia’s richest single literary prize. And Geelong residents are being encouraged to vote for his work in the people’s choice award. “You never know with these things. It’s great when it happens, but there’s some stiff opposition,” Mr Ryan said. “You don’t write to get awards but there are so many books published these days and it’s nice to get some attention, make people aware of it and it promotes poetry as well. “Books of poetry can be pretty invisible in bookshops these days, so anything promoting reading, study or literary appreciation is good.” Mr Ryan said poetry was an underappreciated art form, despite being one of the oldest forms of writing.

AN investigation has led to $33,500 in back-pay for two Geelong workers, the Fair Work Ombudsman has revealed. The ombudsman said one of the workers, who was employed but never registered as an apprentice, received $19,700 for 12 months’ work, while the other would receive $13,800 for various entitlements unpaid after his termination from a health industry job in September.
Glass art DRYSDALE’S fourth annual Festival of Glass will add a short films and a series of workshops with artists to its 2014 bill when it relocates to Christian College from the Potato Shed, according to organisers. They said the festival’s main exhibition event on 16 February would feature about 50 stalls, glassworking demonstrations and prizes.
Swim champs BARWON South West Swimming Association will host 2015’s country long-course championships at Kardinia Aquatic Centre from 24 to 26, Geelong’s council has announced. Major events portfolio holder Ron Nelson said he looked forward to hosting more than 600 athletes and their families in the city.
Trees backed AN overwhelming majority of Borough of Queenscliffe residents have voted to retain the town’s Avenue of Honour, prompting a council plan for restoration. The borough said 64 per cent of respondents to a survey on the future of the pines also suggested retaining Monterey cypress as the replanted species.
Lyons’ den GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons has unveiled an ICT and sports innovation business program for Geelong similar to a reality television in which he starred, Dragon’s Den. Steampacket Accelerator Geelong would support entrepreneurialism and innovation by providing access to mentors and networks for start-ups in the growing information and communications technology industry, he said.
See you in 2014 “Poetry was originally what everyone wrote, although people now prefer narratives and novels in stories.” Mr Ryan said he began writing as a means of exploring the disconnection and contrast between city and rural life, having left the farm in his early 20s.
“It was something I always liked doing and I wanted to say a few things about the country while living in the city. The two are quite different lifestyles but have stereotypical views of each other. Writing about it was a way of opening that up.” Award judges commented that Mr
Ryan’s “coolly lyrical poems unfold a clear-eyed yet often wry view of the pragmatism implicit in rural survival, the brutality in animal treatment, the recognisable incidents in the rituals of extended family as well as some unsettling experiences engraved in history”.

Fund-raiser’s wipe-out By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A NATIONAL breast cancer charity has withdrawn its permission for Torquqay big-wave surfer Jeff Rowley to use its name in fund-raising. National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) chief executive officer Carole Renouf said Mr Rowley had not remitted any funds to the charity in 18 months. Mr Rowley, who has developed an international profile in surfing for his big-wave exploits around the world, set up an internet fund-raising page and issued media releases promising to raise money for breast cancer research with his Charge for Charity.
Charity dumps surf hero His fund-raising page on everydayhero.com.au lists $1000 in donations to other charities. He has claimed in media releases to have raised $10,000 for charity, with a target of $1 million. Mr Rowley is not registered as a fund-raiser with Consumer Affairs Victoria, which is a legal requirement for his activities. Ms Renouf said Mr Rowley signed up with the charity in June 2012, initially with permission to use the NBCF name for three years. “We’ve since tightened our policies and only grant an authority for 12
months. There’s been no activity for a year and no funds have been received, so we’ll pull the plug. “We’ve been in touch with his nominated contact person six times but had no response, so we’ll write to him and advise him he can no longer use our name.” Ms Renouf said most of the thousands of people who signed up to raise funds for the charity ran an event and donated the proceeds. “It’s easier to track if it’s an event, as we have procedures where we follow up the event after it’s held, but
in this case it’s been a bit vague.” Mr Rowley said he was invited to join NBCF as a part of its ambassador program to promote awareness and assist in fundraising efforts “as a highprofile surfer”. “As of this moment I have yet to secure a major sponsor and continue to fund my travel expenses largely through my personal savings, sponsors and a sports grant,” Mr Rowley said. “With the increasing travel, I have spent less time at home recently and have not yet been able to put the time, focus and resources required into another Charge for Charity fund-raiser.”

By MICHELLE HERBISON A NEW anti-litter campaign will encourage witnesses to report lawbreakers via a mobile website, Barwon Regional Waste Management Group has announced. Group chair councillor Andy Richards said residents and visitors could report litterbugs in real-time to help clean up the region. “We’re trying to encourage the community to take ownership in protecting our beautiful region so it remains clean and litter-free for generations to come,” he said. The waste management group said the campaign aimed to “significantly increase” reporting of litterers by 30 per cent. “Not only is it important for people to understand the serious repercussions of littering, it’s time for all of us to act responsibly and to take action,” it said. Ratepayers were slugged $2 million annually to clean up roadside litter, the group’s figures revealed. The litter cost City of Greater Geelong $1.44 million, Surf Coast Shire $267,000, Colac Otway Shire $220,000 and Borough of Queenscliffe $143,000. The litterbug reporting site is epa.vic.gov.au/ reportlitter.

Punter Tom now all-American By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ACCOLADES are continuing to flow for Geelong footballer Tom Hornsey after he last week won a prestigious award as American college football’s best punter. Hornsey, the Ray Guy Award winner, has now been in Associated Press’s first-team All-America, adding to a pair of other first-team All-America selections and two second-team All-America places. The former St Joseph’s Football Club player is now preparing for a tilt at the US national league after setting records in his
four year tenure at University of Memphis. Mum Michele Hornsey said her son had also received invitations to all-star games as scouts and coaches looked for new talent to join the professional ranks. “It’s been a lifelong journey of Tom’s to head in this direction, to play at the highest level possible,” Mrs Hornsey said. “We never thought it would be in this direction, though. But the opportunity presented itself and Tom thought he would give it a go.” Hornsey trained for a year with ProKick’s Nathan Chap-

You can’t take your foot off the pedal at all, it’s gruelling, but Tom thrives on that.” Mrs Hornsey said he had to keep his academic levels high during football season, earning a degree in sports science. Hornsey maintained a modest approach to his success, she said.
“He always thinks he could do better. He’s a gracious young man and doesn’t take it for granted.” Mrs Hornsey said the family watched the nationally televised award presentation live from Australia. “We saw it all unfold as it was happening. It was a proud moment for the family. “We’re proud of him for his dedication and hard work.” Mrs Hornsey said the family recently returned from the US where they watched five of his games and attended his college senior day.
Sophia’s golden service wins Duke’s award By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN HIGHTON over-achiever Sophia McQuillan spent more than 10,000 hours during the past 18 months building cubby houses, planting vegie gardens, learning a language and trekking Victoria’s gold country. It was all in the name of community service as she fulfilled the requirements for a prestigious gold Duke of Edinburgh award. The Melbourne University student trekked 20 kilometres a day for 16 days as she embarked on an “adventurous journey” from Bendigo to Ballarat for one of the five Duke of Edinburgh criteria. She also participated in physical recreation, skill, service and a residential project. “I did fun runs and trained with a 45-minute daily run but then I injured my knee, so I had to change to sprinting.
“I competed in the intercollegiate sports and won the B final in the 100 metres.” Sophia, 24, was secretary for Newman College students club at Melbourne University where she was also an orientation leader as part of a five-day residential project. She finished her Bachelor of Arts this year, graduating with honours in English literature. She intends to undertake a masters in secondary teaching. Sophia is applying for places at Oxford and Cambridge universities after narrowly missing out on a Rhodes Scholarship this year. She hopes to apply for the Australian version of a Sir General John Monash scholarship instead. Sophia grew up in Zimbabwe and completed her secondary schooling at Geelong Grammar where she was introduced to the Duke of Edinburgh award.

Call for bodybuilder syringes By NOEL MURPHY CLEAN-SYRINGE programs need to target muscle-building steroid users, a Geelong public health expert has warned. Deakin University lecturer Matthew Dunn said health ser-
vices providing needles and syringes must act on the rise in performance and image-enhancing drugs (PIEDs). Mr Dunn said PIEDs were taken for reasons deemed superficial, so they were consequently
considered unworthy of funding for injecting programs. “But studies have also shown that a proportion of PIED users report injecting other substances, such as methamphetamine,” he wrote on The Conversation web-
site. “And injecting substances other than PIEDs among this group has been associated with being hepatitis C and/or HIV positive. “We need to consider how we reach this specific group.”
Mr Dunn said seven per cent of steroid users accessed needle and syringe programs last year, up from five per cent on 2011 and between just one to two per cent in 1995 and 2010. Steroids were the most widely
used int the PIED category, also including growth and reproductive hormones, stimulants and supplements such as creatine for muscle mass. Little was known about PIED users despite their dramatic rise in numbers, Mr Dunn said.

CIRQUE du Soleil star and Olympic athlete Trudy McIntosh is heading home to Lara after almost six years touring with the internationally-acclaimed show. A performer and strength and conditioning coach with Cirque’s Alegria troupe, Ms McIntosh is in France on a stadium tour and anxious to return home as soon as the show finishes at the end of the year. “Alegria’s last show will be on 30 December. I’ll be on the next flight home to Geelong,” she told the Independent. The diminutive Olympian and Commonwealth games gold medallist embarked on a major career change when she swapped the vaults and rings of gymnastics for the exquisite glamour of Cirque. “I’ve been with Alegria for over five years now. We travel each week to a different place,” she said. “When we started out we were under the big top, so we’d stay for one up to three months at one place. Three years ago it turned into an arena show, so each week is a new city – it’s a little bit tiring. “With Alegria, I do an act called Power
Ms McIntosh overcame a serious knee injury from skiing before joining Cirque – after being told she’d never run again. “Hearing those words, I couldn’t comprehend it,” she said. “But I went through three operations and three years of rehab. “It was really difficult, really painful.” Ms McIntosh said she loved the strength and conditioning work with Cirque and working on rehabilitation with injured athletes. “Before I joined Cirque, I was a personal trainer. I want to get back onto that. “I’m also a yoga and Pilates teacher and want to get back to them as well.” Ms McIntosh was uncertain what the future held but was keen to start working in Geelong again, possibly with former colleague Stoofa Lewry. She also has to deal with the issue of a European attachment. “Ashley, my boyfriend, lives in Denmark, so I’ll go back to Denmark. “I’m not sure just exactly when but I’ll probably stay home for two months or so with Mum and Dad.”

Local tech jobs going Sky high By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG-BASED Sky Software will create 40 jobs in a new global support centre for sales of its growing student management system, according to chairman Clive Mayhew. Mr Mayhew said the company recently sold its software to customers in another 45 countries, adding to seven nations already supplied. A $400,000 Victorian Government grant ensured the project would remain in Geelong, he said. Mr Mayhew said the global support centre was set up in Geelong to tap its “highly-skilled” workforce. “We wanted to provide our customers with the highest level of support, so we chose to build
the global support centre here in Geelong. “The funding will underpin our recruitment and training of people in a number of specialist areas in the global support centre including operational support, business analysts, technical support, project managers, trainers and other technical support roles.” Mr Mayhew said the company provided complex customised software for private education providers. “We’re supporting over 250,000 students using our software in Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Czech Republic and Kuwait. “Over the next two years one of our customers will be deploying our software into another 45 countries and our global support
centre can scale to support many millions of students using our software around the world. “These new roles will build on the fantastic team we already have in place and with the support of the Victorian Government will double the number of Geelongbased employees again.” Mr Mayhew said the growth of the Geelong company started with participation in trade fairs and missions, instrumental in winning significant overseas business. “We believe ICT represents a tremendous opportunity for jobs growth in Geelong.” Regional and Rural Development Minister Peter Ryan said the global support centre was another example of new investment and business opportunities in Geelong creating new jobs.

Fighting fit after heart transplant By MICHELLE HERBISON TWELVE months of boot camp and personal training has left Bell Park’s Kelly Hodgson feeling healthier than ever after a heart transplant. The 31-year-old started personal training with Mitch Waters at a Breakwater gym, hoping to boost her natural immunity after the life-saving operation. The training helped produce her best blood test results since the procedure. “I’m still there 12 months later but I wouldn’t be if the trainers weren’t on my back - you know how easy it is to give up,” Kelly said. “It’s great to improve my blood results and see how much better I feel. I’m fairly fit now.” Ms Hodgson said she was The Alfred Hospital’s 1001st heart transplant recipient at the age of 23. Her father was one of the first to receive a transplant at the hospital. Ms Hodgson contracted dilated cardiomyopathy about 10 months after giving birth, resulting in fluid build-up and asthma-like symptoms requiring a transplant. Despite twice-yearly visits to a transplant clinic and taking 24 tablets daily, Ms Hodgson said she “can’t complain” about her health since the operation. “I do two personal training sessions a week and I try to do two boot camps a week. I feel so much better for it.”

Veterans riding high with club OLD CYCLISTS never die, they just re-tyre. That’s the motto at Geelong Veteran’s Cycling Club, at any rate, where any number of old cyclists are always around to prove the point, laughs former president Richard Buckwell. Some 135 of them, in fact, Richard says with some pride, both men and women aged between 35 and 30 respectively and up. “We had an 81 year-old who won one of our Saturday morning races a couple of weeks ago,” Richard pointed out. The club is also the only veterans cycling outfit to have a super vets group of members aged 60-plus who race nearly every Wednesday of the year.
Join the
club John Van Klaveren
The club has permanent clubrooms at Paraparap, including a meeting room, a kitchen, toilets and change rooms. Racing is conducted nearly every Sunday morning from midJanuary to mid-December starting 9.30am and are generally a mixture of handicap and scratch races. The club also has a number of time trials each year. The club’s racing is run over distances varying from a 20km
time trial to 60km handicap races. Richard said the club often combined events with its Colac counterpart and organised an annual Stan Howard memorial road race, an open event conducted in conjunction with Victorian Veteran Cycling Council. Anyone wanting some cycling action a little closer to home could aways attend the club’s evening ride on Belmont’s criterium track, Richard said. “There are always a variety of options because we try and cater for ages and all types of events, using time conditions or grading participants into divisions,” he explained. The club has been spinning its wheels since 1977, catering for
several generations of cyclists. “I haven’t stopped racing for 55 years,” Richard said. “We just keep on whirring away. We have a strong social aspect to the club. “It keeps you fit and keeps you going. “There’s a great camaraderie among cyclists, which is part of why it’s increasing in popularity.” Richard said memberships were usually $150 a year but the club had instituted a free ride for novices to try out with the club. “It gives people a chance to see how they like the bike - and the company,” he smiled. Richard said more information on the club was available at gvcc.net.au and on the club’s Facebook page.

Dam wind power
Keep watch on kids
THE PROPOSED giant wind farm on King Island has divided its community and “sparked anxiety among conservationist” (Independent, 6 November). Wind farms provide no direct environmental benefit, unlike dams. Dams constructed for hydro power attract rain and store water for environmental flow in times of drought. Whatever the reasons, coal power was seen as more logical than the Franklin Dam. If hydro power from dams and nuclear power, which could power the whole country, are ruled out, wind farms, if their current design causes problems, can also be ruled out. Instead of Federal Government building ports to facilitate the export of coal, this money should go to modernising power stations and improving the design of wind farms and other energy. Kevin Guinane Gheringhap
ROYAL Life Saving asks readers to be vigilant around water and to keep watch as the hotter weather kicks in. Latest figures show that 31 children aged from birth to four were lost last year in pools, dams and bath tubs across the nation. This is clearly alarming. Sixty-one per cent of drowning fatalities for children under five were in swimming pools. In half these cases children actually got into the pool because it was unfenced or the gate was faulty or propped open. Adult supervision is the number-one issue in child drowning. Children always have to be supervised around water. Parents must restrict children’s access, ensure they are water-aware and know resuscitation skills. Practical tips are available at keepwatch.com.au. Justin Scarr Royal Life Saving Society Australia chief executive officer

Climbing fun THE Rock Adventure Centre is open over school holidays with indoor climbing in a safe, controlled environment. Indoor rock climbing is terrific low-impact exercise, using all muscles simultaneously. Parents who don’t want to climb can still be involved by holding their children’s safety ropes while they climb. It’s also a great option for grandparents to entertain grandchildren during holidays. The Rock’s climbing walls are sculptured and textured to resemble the real thing. Up to 12 metres high, the walls are studded with coloured climbing holds of various sizes and shapes. Each climber wears a harness with a safety rope attached. The rope belay system provides a safe, controlled descent when the climber wants to come down
Parents can send their children up the wall for a change at The Rock Adventure Centre. or in the event of a fall. All rope handlers must be aged at least 13 years and go through an orientation and safety lesson before they can begin. Instructors are always avail-
able at The Rock to teach firsttimers. Instruction is included in the entry price. The climbing walls are designed to accommodate all levels, from beginners to experts. The Rock also has a “bouldering” area with short climbing walls only a few feet off wellpadded flooring, so no safety rope or partner is required. The Rock will be open from midday for seven days a week during school holidays. Children’s holiday sessions run from 2pm to 4pm each Monday to Friday over holidays and are ideal for primary-age children. Bookings are recommended. More information is available by visiting rockadventures.com. au, phoning 5221 3101 or visiting The Rock at the extreme river end of Pakington St, Newtown.
Otway Fly’s holiday adventure OTWAY Fly is offering a fun and educational daily Eco Adventure over the summer school holidays. Supplied with an attraction adventure map, each participant is challenged to complete a list of tasks taking them on a journey of discovery through the depths of the Otway forest. Participants are awarded a token in the shape of a black snail, a species specific to the Otway region, for completing each task. Participants who achieve all six tokens go into the draw to win one of five family passes to Melbourne Aquarium to further their rainforest adventure within the aquarium’s rainforest exhibit. Eco Adventure challenges participants to spot elusive Olie the Otway Dinosaur, paint a picture of Otway flora and fauna and to write a two-lined poem on the Abseil Deck.
Otway Fly’s Eco-Adventure has plenty of fun in store for children over summer holidays. These are just some of the fun activities participants will need to complete as part of the Eco Adventure.

MOTOR City Music Festival is now inviting applications from local bands and market stalls to get involved in the inaugural event at Geelong Showgrounds. Festival organiser Hugo T Armstrong says the event will celebrate Geelong and the region, featuring plenty of local bands and organised by local staff and suppliers. “There was a real willingness for having a festival here and I was determined to celebrate 20 years of The Blues Train,” he said. “We’re Victoria’s second-largest city - can you believe Geelong doesn’t already have its own music festival? “Each day is a bit different; it’s cheap, accessible and celebrating what’s great about Geelong.” Entry to the overage Friday night event is just $37 to hear acts including Chocolate Starfish, Jimi Hocking’s Blues Machine and Nick Barker and the Heartache State. On Saturday tickets are just $50 for a day and night event featuring a string of regulars from Queenscliff’s The Blues Train, celebrating its 20th anniversary with performers like Lloyd Spiegel and Claude Hay. Saturday’s main stage will be dedicated to tribute acts including Kisstroyer - Australia’s Hottest Kiss Tribute, Thunderstruck - The Ultimate AC/DC Tribute and The Doors Show - Absolutely Live. “Come to the main stage that day and you’ll know the words to every song,” Hugo says. On Sunday, children can accompany adults to the festival for fantastic music, carnival rides and food. Hugo says Motor City Music Festival will focus on Geelong’s strengths in music, culture and tourism. “We’re not going to turn Geelong around economically in one fell swoop but it’s a good way to get people out to have a good time.” Further information and tickets are available at motorcitymusicfestival.com.au.
Tribute band Thunderstruck, above, and Chocolate Starfish, below, will be among the Motor City Music Festival acts.

Best range, prices at camping outlet THE REGION’S newest and only independent camping retailer has opened at Breakwater with top-quality brands at competitive prices. Camping Megastore owners Geoff and Leigh Chandler use their outdoor experience, retail skill and IT expertise to offer the best shopping experiences in Geelong. Camping Megastore stocks brands like Oztrail, Caribee, Coleman and Oztent plus a diverse selection of specialist camping suppliers.
Camping Megastore’s Geoff and Leigh Chandler.
Geoff says the range has around 80 tents, 100 different sleeping bags, various bedding options, tarps, poles, packs, furniture, lighting, books and toilets. “Most importantly, we also know what works and how to use it,” he says. “We’ve worked hard with our suppliers to develop the range and are proud to be independent, employing locals and keeping money in Geelong.” A self-confessed bush mechanic, Geoff built several trailers for family trips around
Australia, the latest six-metres long, to carry all their equipment. “We’ve done lots of hiking and camping and we know the touring side of it right down to building our own camping trailers. We’re starting a Facebook page to capture some of this. “ Camping Megastore is at 2/30 Leather St, behind Breakwater Kitchens. Look out for the big chair and flag.

BAYVIEW on the Bellarine Shopping Centre is another step closer, with works on its major Centennial Boulevard link to Jetty Rd expected to be completed by the end of this month. Centennial Bld will be the gateway to the shopping precinct, which will feature a full-line Woolworths supermarket and 11 speciality stores, making Bayview the only Jetty Rd estate to boast such extensive retail facilities. Murray’s Feelers out for Wooly By MICHELLE HERBISON PETE MURRAY watched on via Skype as the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra practised and recorded his beloved songs from 2003 hit album, Feeler. The orchestra was recording a 10-year anniversary version of the CD that skyrocketed Murray’s career, selling more than seven times platinum, reaching number one on the national ARIA charts and spending two and a half years in the top 100. “It was suggested to me that we do a bonus disc with a few tracks with an orchestra,” Murray recalled. “I thought it was a pretty cool idea but why stop at four or five – let’s do the whole album.” Murray flew score-writer Rod Ennis to Bulgaria to conduct the orchestra while he marvelled online at the players’ professionalism and “emotional sounds”. “It’s incredible how good these guys are – they learn everything so quickly. It sounds fantastic.” A decade on, Murray was still dazed at Feeler’s success and the popularity of his unique sound. “I didn’t really think I ever wrote songs that were for radio really. I think once people heard the sound it was very different
to what else was going around.” Murray cited his influences as music greats Neil Young and Bob Dylan but stressed his desire for individuality. “I do try to have my own sound and not sound like anyone else. I don’t know what it is that makes something work and makes everyone want it but (Feeler) certainly had something on it.” Murray laughed that the widely-run story of his direction-change from rising rugby superstar to professional musician following an injury was “blown out of proportion”. “It’s kind of funny how that changed over time. I really only played like two seasons of footy but there’s a chance I was making the Australians sevens side,” he said modestly. Having started learning guitar relatively late at age 22, Murray’s love for music quickly grew but he only considered it as a career toward his late 20s. Murray revealed he was working on a new original album to be released next year. “I’m experimenting at the moment working with drum loops. I think you tend to still write the same way you write and I always will but it’s the flavours you put on top of it.” Pete Murray plays Geelong’s Wool Exchange on 14 March.

Sounds Sweet REPRESENTING Australia in a Memphis blues challenge was an emotional experience for Geelong’s Felicia Sowinski. “I was this crazy crying Australia lady. They’d say, ‘How do you feel about being here in Memphis, the home of the music?’ and I’d burst into tears walking down Beale St,” she laughed. The 2011 experience was a highlight for Sweet Felicia and the Honeytones, making the international semi-finals after earning tickets to Memphis through Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society. The three-piece uniquely recreates classic blues music, with Sowinski singing while playing bass backed up by guitar and drums. “Basically, we do a swing sort of blues. It comes from the big-band blues era but generally people do it with saxes, a horn section or at least a larger band.” A regular on Queenscliff’s
MOTOR CITY: Geelong blues singer and bassist Felicia Sowinski. The Blues Train, Sweet Felicia and the Honeytones will join a long line-up of performers at March’s inaugural Motor City Music Festival at Geelong Showgrounds. Sowinski said her interest in the blues had developed during her 20s when she traced the influences of modern music back to the likes of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith. “It touches a place in your heart when you hear that music.
It’s truthful, honest and not pretentious. “Pretty much human nature hasn’t changed throughout thousands of years and the music reflects that.” Sowinski said the band covered blues classics as well as writing their own songs in a ’50s style “with a bit of a modern spin” and some cheekiness. She recently returned to Geelong after spending six months living in Berlin where she earned plenty of praise from European crowds for her individual style. “It’s hard to find women bass players, let alone women bass players that sing,” she said. Her two performances at Motor City Music Festival would appeal to music-lovers of all ages, she said. “We’re kind of a happy blues - not too heavy, not too lightweight. And people tend to dance a lot to our music.” More information about the festival is available at motorcitymusicfestival.com.au.

IRRESISTIBLY delicious homemade slices from central Geelong’s Café Lorae make for the perfect morning or afternoon treat. The café’s slice extraordinaire, Jo Rabbas, prepares a selection of more than 20 varieties including lime and white chocolate, Malteser, white fruit and nut, ginger, peppermint, Clinker and Malteser, maple and Chokito. Anyone with a sweet tooth will love Café Lorae’s delicious and unique selection. Owner Damian says he and Jo took over the established café, at 84 Moorabool St, in March
and have since brought their own touches to the business. “We’re trying to build on the existing defined base and let more people know we’re around and are centrally located. “Making the slices in-house is something that’s unique to us because it’s not something that a lot of other businesses focus on.” Café Lorae offers coffee and slice deals as well as small and large variety packs of slices starting at just $2.50. Customers will enjoy relaxing in the café’s warm and friendly environment, catching up with friends between shopping trips
SANDSTONE CAFÉ
and just enjoying the delicious food during their lunchbreaks. “With our staff the expectation is there’s a good customer experience from start to finish and good value for money,” Damian says. During December and January Café Lorae will contribute to the revitalisation of central Geelong by opening on Saturdays offering a brunch menu featuring freshly made salads, pancakes, eggs benedict, toasties and focaccias. Café Lorae is also increasing its catering business, preparing fresh slices and sandwiches for events such as business morning teas and weekend picnics.

we exist to excite, INFORM and capture our region’s truly unique style and culture
By EWAN KENNEDY IN EUROPE the phrase ‘grand touring’, later shortened to GT, was coined in the 1930s to describe cars owned by wealthy people for fast point to point travel while cosseting their passengers in luxury. They generally also had good luggage space, but that wasn’t essential as the really wealthy could send vast amounts of their materiel ahead by truck or cheaper car. Though the all-new BMW 3 GT is loosely based on the 3 Series sedan, it is much larger inside and has legroom not far short of that in the far more expensive BMW 7 Series saloon, and with good headroom as well. The new GT also has a huge boot under that stretched hatchback tail so those of us who can’t send our luggage out in advance are able to cart it along with us. With a price list that starts at just $69,500 and stretches to a

still reasonably $76,500, the new BMW 3 GT is far more affordable than the BMW 7 Series. Though the 3 Gran Tourismo is taller than others in the BMW sedan and wagon range to give it more interior space, its styling makes it look lower and sleeker than it really is. The latest rendition of the BMW kidney grille, with style lines expanding from the headlights to reach the grille, gives the 3 GT a wide look. The shape of the hatchback tail works exceptionally well to our eyes. Boot space is 520 litres with the seats in use, and up to 1600 litres with the 40/20/40 seatbacks folded down. That rear seat arrangement therefore offers numerous ways of juggling passengers and luggage. We managed to get a large painting into the boot, yet still had room for four adults. The 3 Series GT is powered by a choice between three four-
cylinder 2.0-litre engines. The BMW 320i petrol fitted to our test car last week had 135 kW of power and 270 Nm of torque. The 320d turbo-diesel also gives you 135 kW, but torque is much higher at 380 Nm. The 328i petrol produces up to 180 kW and 350 Nm thanks to its higher state of tune. A responsive eight-speed automatic transmission is used behind each engine. BMW is one of the leaders in the safety field and the 3 Series Gran Turismo has ESC, crash preparation systems, six airbags, a rearview camera, run-flat tyres, automatic wipers and automatic lights amongst many other safety items. This German car is a sheer delight to drive, with excellent chassis balance thanks to its ideal weight distribution. It has sharp steering and, as always in any BMW, the feeling that the car is aware of your every wish.

Sculpture on wheels By EWAN KENNEDY HYUNDAI i30 station wagon is a practical big brother to the i30 fivedoor hatchback that has already scored plenty of points in the sales race since it was launched early in 2013. Though it’s South Korean, Hyundai calls this i30 variant a ‘Tourer’ rather than a station wagon to give it a European flavour. However, ’Tourer’ is a lot more than a mere marketing tag - because this vehicle was designed in Germany and is very much aimed at that huge economic area in its chassis dynamics and overall performance. The front of the new Hyundai Tourer wagon has what its designers call Fluidic Sculpture. This shape has been lauded in many countries, including Australia for several years. Potential buyers agree and say the modern lines really stand out from the crowd in what is generally a conservative market segment. Hyundai i30 Tourer is sold in two trim levels - Active and Elite. Ours was an Elite and we found it pleasing to drive and ride in. This really is a practical load carrier that offers excellent value for money, with a recommended price list beginning at $22,990. Unlike the now superseded Hyundai i30 station wagon which had a longer wheelbase than the hatchback variant, the new i30 Tourer shares the hatch’s 2650mm wheelbase. While that’s a long wheelbase for this class, though the wagon isn’t as voluminous it might otherwise have been. However interior and luggage space are still pretty good and potential buyers we spoke to agreed it would usually meet all their needs. That’s because the body of all-new i30 Tourer is 185 mm longer overall than the hatch. It has 528 litres of stowage capacity with rear seats up, a significant increase of 150 litres over the hatch.
This volume rises to an impressive 1642 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Additional underfloor storage compartments are of a decent size and add to the Tourer’s versatility Again following the Europeans, the new Hyundai i30 Tourer is sold with both petrol and turbo-diesel powertrains. The 1.6-litre direct-injection petrol engine puts out 99 kW of power and 164 Nm of torque. While peak torque is at a very high 4850 rpm, aimed at high-speed touring on European motorways, we found it was strong for plenty of the rev band below that high number. The 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine we tested has peak power of 94 kW at 4000 rpm, with top torque of 260 Nm being produced between 1900 and 2750 rpm. Making it much more suited to Australian driving. Both engines can have either a sixspeed manual or six-speed automatic, sitting beside it. The automatic transmission has a sequential manual mode, but we tended to leave it to its own decisions most of the time and found it to have good grunt in real life conditions. Fuel consumption was usually in the six to seven litres per 100 kilometres range in country and motoring running, rising to a still reasonable seven to nine litres around town in heavy traffic and commuting running. All-new Hyundai i30 Tourer has an impressive range of active and passive safety technologies. Standard across all models are Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and ABS with EBD and Brake Assist. Model range: Active 1.6-litre petrol five-door wagon: $22,990 (manual), $25,190 (automatic); Active CRDi 1.6-litre turbo-diesel five-door wagon: $25,590 (manual), $27,790 (automatic); Elite CRDi 1.6-litre turbo-diesel five-door wagon: $31,390 (automatic).

Gary Keleman at work in his South Geelong service centre.
Thirty years of personal service with Geelong’s Gary Keleman IT’S THE personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart Gary Keleman has been in the business since 1982, so he must be doing something right. His care and attention to detail has enhanced his hard-won reputation in the car repair trade. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary is known as a Mazda specialist but his tried and true slogan, ‘Anything on any car’, sums up his approach. “We do all major and minor repairs, including exhaust, brakes, clutches and suspension,” Gary explains. “Plus we do the full range of upgrades and servicing, including air-conditioner re-gassing.” Gary and Mazda go back a long way, including his top qualifications in the repair and servicing of the famous rotary engine. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car repair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive dealer level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says.
