BETTE Bonney works well over 40 hours a week as a volunteer, and her enthusiasm is catching. Along with her other voluntary commitments, Mrs Bonney is the Southern Downs Regional Council’s volunteer co-ordinator - a role she fills as a volunteer! Mrs Bonney says volunteering is an opportunity and a privilege rather than a duty or a commitment to society. She has volunteered with church and social groups over the decades, but her involvement has grown in recent years. “It started with chairing the strategy group with domestic and family violence prevention a few years ago, then as part of a management committee for Warwick Safe Haven when it started in 2010.” Mrs Bonney then became a volunteer with the SDRC aiming to lift volunteer involvement across the community. “It just so happened that I was in that capacity when the floods came,” she said. “Overnight we set up for the first time ever a volunteer response for the floods, to help with cleanups. “That’s where a big journey started.” Within two weeks 200 people had signed up, and each had to be

fitted into a role that suited their skills. That done, the so-called Weekend Warriors who were helping local farmers recover from flood damage had to be organised with accommodation, meals, transport and directed to families in need. Mrs Bonney then had a short paid role training volunteers, an exercise she hopes to repeat next year in some more of the villages of the Southern Downs. She continues to co-ordinate volunteer activities day and night as president at Safe Haven, a domestic violence shelter. Another 40-plus hours a week goes into the Southern Downs Flexible Learning Hub which deals with young people who don’t fit into mainstream schools. Her husband Owen is senior co-ordinator. In the meantime Mrs Bonney has found time to do a Certificate IV in volunteer program co-ordination, among other qualifications. “The very positive thing that has come to me about volunteering is that I’ve been able to participate and contribute in the community things that I’m passionate about,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to use your skills and what you’re passionate about to achieve and move things forward.” Continued Page 2

All hail our volunteers From front page Mrs Bonney says she’s seen some incredible growth in people after they came to volunteer. It is also a great way to over a period of unemployment. Mrs Bonney first saw this when she worked for Mission Employment several years ago. “When we put people into volunteer work they often responded very positively,” she said. “It’s a great gateway for people to get out there and volunteer to help

chances of future employment. She said the Southern Downs has a high proportion of volunteers. There’s the SES, the show and rodeo volunteers, volunteers in policing, in school tuckshops, charity stores and op shops, service clubs, sports clubs, welfare organisations, art and craft clubs, the CWA, Salvation Army and church groups. Short-term volunteering is also available at activities like Driver Reviver for those who can’t commit for a longer term.

Volunteering proved to be a life-changing experience for Christine Stammers.
Help for the helpers By STEVE GRAY IF you want proof that volunteering is good for you, just ask Christine Stammers. For Christine, a stint volunteering after the floods of 2010 and 2011 was the catalyst that brought her back from a lifetime of mental illness and selfharm. “It led to paid work, I’ve written a book, it’s been fantastic,” she said. “Volunteering helped me see my skills and abilities and my self-worth again and gave me the self-confidence to say I can get back into life.” Christine said she had suffered mental illness from age eight, had her first psychotic episode at 13 years and had no help until she was 30. She met Bette Bonney after

still had worth and value as a person. Having been defined by her “craziness” since she was teenager, volunteering had taught her she could be defined by her skills and value to others. It was a real turning point. Christine has written a book My Mum is Amazing in which she used language her teenage daughter could understand, unlike so many other books on mental illness which are heavy with technical language and daunting in their medical complexity. She is now an accredited counsellor, making a living and running courses for others debilitated by mental illness. And the remarkable journey back all began with a simple decision to volunteer.

A tenacious woman, Christine chose to “retrain her brain” rather than surrender to the disease. When the floods came she decided to help because “it was just shovelling s**t”. “That’s what led me to meet Bette, and her body language was just so welcoming. The shutters didn’t go down on her face when I said I had a problem. “Sometimes when you tell people you have a mental health issue the shutters just go down.” Christine said helping out at data entry led her to see she
BETTE Bonney says Warwick would not be the same without volunteers. “Volunteers are the backbone of how Australia survives,” she said. “If all that work was dependent on funding it wouldn’t happen. Australia-wide 6.1 million people, or 36 per cent of the Australian population aged 18 years and over participated in voluntary work in 2010, with women more likely to volunteer than men. Queensland has an estimated 1.2 million volunteers.
In emergency situations alone, more than 40,000 Queenslanders committed in excess of 27 million minutes of their time volunteering in 2012. Regional towns are home to our charitable spirit, according to the Australian Tax Office. In some of our smallest and most remote towns where as many as eight out 10 locals give to charity annually, despite average incomes in some areas less than $50,000.

now Chamber off track? Mayor recovering THE Warwick Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been rebuffed by the Southern Downs Regional Council over its campaign to reinvigorate the old railway precinct in the city. Councillors said the chamber had given people “false hope that the council backed its proposal when in fact it had no involvement at this early stage. They said it was disappointing the chamber had made statements to media that gave the wrong impression. Both councillors and council officers stressed that council had no financial involvement in plans to refurbish the precinct. While Mayor Peter Blundell and CEO Andrew Roach acknowledged
they had a “brief chat over the issue, both had been adamant that there was no financial commitment from council. Cr Denise Ingram said one organisation already had contacted her requesting a room for meetings. “We need to be very careful of the public perception, Cr Ingram told the 18 December council meeting. “It’s been such a white elephant. Cr Vic Pennisi requested an inspection of the site. He said the council wanted no further involvement in the chamber’s plans until they knew what those plans were. He said media reports had led to “a community sentiment that council is taking this on and that the Visitors’ Information Centre and art gallery would be moving to the railway precinct.
Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley said the art gallery committee was concerned over the lack of consultation. Any decision on a redevelopment of the largely-disused railway precinct is “way into the future, he said. President of the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, Bruce Partridge, said it appears councillors want to “kill off the enthusiasm for the project. “Warwick Chamber of Commerce has never suggested that council would pay for any development of the Warwick Railway site, Mr Partridge said. “Chamber has called for a study of the potential and a part of that study would include the possibility of specific grants for fund-raising if it was decided to go ahead. Mr Partridge said the chamber
had heard persistent rumours the government was looking to sell or lease the precinct and felt Warwick did not deserve to lose such an amazing potential future attraction. “If councillors want to kill off the enthusiasm of the business community for fear of building up ‘false hope’ their statements will certainly do that, he said. “The facts remain the site is a potential for a more ambitious potential arts and craft precinct and a very attractive tourism centre, with the development of the planned Toowoomba-based scenic rail Warwick needs a hub of activity to offer visitors. “Chamber calls on councillors to share the vision and at least support a study to discover what the real potential is.
We can rely on Roslyn QUEENSLAND’S Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Jack Dempsey recently described Roslyn Newley as the “backbone of the Warwick SES Unit. Roslyn has spent 20 years dedicated to the Warwick State Emergency Service and was named Regional Member of the Year during SES Week. “The Warwick SES is a strong, energetic and cooperative group that enjoys activations and task force deployments, and without Roslyn this level of service to the community would not be possible, Mr Dempsey said. “She is a perfect example of someone giving selfless commit-
ment as a volunteer and is a deserving recipient of this award. Mayor Peter Blundell said local SES units have recently been involved in a number of emergency response activities. These include assisting rural fire brigades; traffic control and communications; refuelling of Careflight and other rescue helicopters doing medical evacuations; assisting the Queensland Police Service in searches for missing people, including land and water searches during floods; doorknocking to warn residents and providing assistance throughout and after the event; roof tarping as a result of storm damage. “We are very thankful for this service, Cr Blundell said.
Jennings Hotel
Roslyn Newley is the backbone of the Warwick SES. With a team of almost 50 members, qualified in fields such as flood boat operation, working safely at heights, storm damage, chainsaw operation, vertical rescue, first
aid, landsearch, map reading and navigation skills, communications and traffic control, local SES crews are always fully prepared and ready to step into action.

SOUTHERN Downs Mayor Peter Blundell will return to work later this month after an operation for a heart condition. Cr Blundell was hospitalised in Stanthorpe on 16 December after suffering chest pains and was transferred to Mater Private Mayor Peter Blundell. Hospital the following day. He was found to have a blockage in a major artery and underwent surgery to clear the impediment. “I am very thankful to the staff at both the Stanthorpe and Mater hospitals for their excellent care, and grateful to the community for their kind messages of support, particularly at this busy time of the year, Cr Blundell said. “It has obviously been a scary time for both my family and I, but thankfully the prognosis is good. Council CEO Andrew Roach said the angioplasty has rectified Cr Blundell’s condition and he is now on the road to recovery. “Cr Blundell has taken the Christmas/New Year break to rest and recover and he is progressing well. He will return to his mayoral duties on 27 January. We look forward to welcoming him back, he said. Mr Roach said Cr Blundell again thanked members of the community for their concern about his health and was keen to get back to work.

Safer drivers merit reward
Man killed in crash tragedy A MAN was killed and three others injured after a two-vehicle crash at Glen Aplin on Tuesday afternoon. The four men were in a station wagon, which was turning into a property off the New England Highway around 3.30pm, when it collided with an oncoming truck. A 24-year-old man, a passenger in the station wagon, died at the scene. Two other male passengers of the station wagon, aged 26 and 29, were transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital and the Gold Coast University Hospital by helicopter in a serious but stable condition.

They were suffering head, neck and chest injuries. The 25-year-old male driver was taken to Stanthorpe Hospital for medical treat-
ment. The occupants of the truck were uninjured. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the accident, police said.
Waringh Waringh rocks on A SUCCESSFUL rock ’n’ roll musical evening was organised by Warwick’s recently-incorporated local Aboriginal group Waringh Waringh just before Christmas. Waringh Waringh is the traditional name for the Warwick district and the group has been formed by long-term Warwick residents including Githabul Traditional Owners. They plan to take action on several community issues and this was their first public event. The evening was a great night out with music provided by popular local artists A to B, Mal Lingard, Michael John, Barry Heffernan and Norma Jean and rock and roll music resonated in the Cowboys’ clubhouse until well into the evening. Guest artist was popular local Aboriginal singer Roger Knox who has recently released a new album. A highlight of the evening was the up and coming duet of Joanne McGrady and Delphine Charles, known as the J-Dels. Organisers thanked those who supported the evening and enjoyed the numerous raffles and the supper.
QUEENSLAND is researching licence discounts but has no immediate plans to offer rewards to safer drivers, as happens in New South Wales. The NSW scheme rewards motorists who have an unblemished driving record for five years with a 50 per cent reduction on the price of their licence renewal. The ‘Fair Go for Safe Drivers’ scheme provides a discount of up to $81 on a licence renewal. Since the scheme was launched in July last year, 408,000 people have been rewarded with the 50 per cent discount for not losing any demerit points. Rewards for safe driving are under consideration in Queensland, a spokeswoman for the Department of Transport and Main Roads told the Free Times.
“
It’s our way of saying thank you to motorists who do the right thing… Adam Marshall MP
“While there are no specific plans to implement a rewards scheme we have been undertaking research in conjunction with the Queensland University of Technology into the viability and credibility of reward or incentive schemes for motorists,” she said. “Once this research is complete we will provide recommendations to the government for consideration.” NSW Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said 4548 motorists in the electorate had been rewarded with half price driver’s licences as part of the NSW Government’s ‘Fair

Go for Safe Drivers’ incentive scheme. Mr Marshall said the new the figures show women drivers in the Northern Tablelands were safer than men on our roads. “In total, 8.8 per cent of the 51,610 licensed drivers in the Northern Tablelands have received the discounted licence through the scheme this year, with women making up 54 per cent of these,” he said. The 50 per cent discount applies whether the licence is renewed for one, three or five years. Pensioners are unaffected as they pay nothing for their licence. “It’s our way of saying thank you to motorists who do the right thing and encouraging better driving behaviour in others,” Mr Marshall said. “Dangerous, selfish and stupid behaviour on our roads kills or injures hundreds of people each year.”

Meatworkers’ reunion electricians and other contractors or cattle buyers who might have been involved in any way with the operation.” Mr Cusack said celebrations would commence at midday (Queensland time) on Saturday 25 January with an informal “meet and greet” at the Wallangarra School of Arts. At 6pm Saturday evening, a reunion dinner will be held at the restored Wallangarra railway station for $30 per head. Several members of the Anderson family are attending the celebrations, and during the dinner, Alan Anderson will launch the book, “Home on the Pig’s Back - The Story of the Wallangarra Meatworks”, produced by Dot Moore. Buses from Tenterfield and Stanthorpe will be available if there is sufficient demand. Anyone wishing to attend the re-
union dinner is asked to book and pay by 18 January, with an extra $10 per head if they intend utilising the courtesy bus. Australia Day activities include golf, the butchers’ picnic barbecue lunch and an afternoon of combined reunion and Australia Day festivities. The butchers’ picnic barbecue gets under way at 12.30pm at the School of Arts, and will initiate an afternoon of combined reunion and Australia Day festivities. The local community is invited to join the visiting “Reunionists” to enjoy the fun of market stalls, novelty sports events and other activities. In a separate incident, Police attending an address in Symes Street on New Year’s Day resulted in a 17-yearold girl being charged with possessing dangerous drugs and utensils after police located a quantity of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Elsewhere at Cottonvale, police intercepted a vehicle on the afternoon of 5 January and found a quantity of cannabis. The 29-year-old occupant of the vehicle received drug diversion for the offence.

Police report Eye-spy assault STANTHORPE police have reported a relatively trouble-free New Year, with just one serious incident reported. Police said that while reviewing CCTV footage from Victoria Street, two females were observed repeatedly punching another woman. Inquiries revealed the 19-year-old victim had been set upon by the two offenders, aged 22 and 23, however no assault complaint was made. Police charged both offenders with Public Nuisance offences and they are due to appear in court in January.
Drug charges A 40-YEAR-OLD truckie was charged with possessing dangerous drugs seized a quantity of amphetamines in the cab of his vehicle. Police has been conducting a routine traffic stop of a prime mover at

Bad start to year
Former workers from Anderson’s Meatworks will celebrate their reunion in Wallangarra on 25 January.
TRAFFIC on the New England Highway at Stanthorpe was briefly disrupted on Sunday evening after the driver of a B-double truck lost control of the vehicle and it rolled onto its side. Police said fortunately, the vehicle came to rest completely off the road so traffic disruption was minimal. No injuries were sustained by the driver.

THEY’LL be telling porkies in Wallangarra on the Australia Day weekend, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be lying. They’ll be remembering when the border town was “home on the pig’s back”. Here’s an open invitation to anyone involved with Anderson’s Meatworks to join a reunion being organised by the Wallangarra Jennings Progress Association. “We are hoping anyone who had any association with the former meatworks will make full use of the opportunity to return to their old ‘stomping grounds’ to catch up and reminisce with old workmates,” organiser Brendan Cusack said. “The invitation is open not just to former staff and employees and their families, but to graziers who supplied stock, truckies who carted stock and other supplies, tradesmen such as plumbers or

Eagle lands, brush in hand INDIGENOUS artist Brett Parker, who works under the name Billyara, has been guiding young artists through the creation of three murals to be permanently displayed in Stanthorpe. Billyara is a Wiradjuri man living on the central coast in NSW.

He said Billyara means Eagle, and is his totem and his connection to the land. Billyara has been painting and teaching Aboriginal art full time for 25 years. He was invited to Stanthorpe by the Granite Belt Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation to create the three murals with people from the community over five days at community gallery ArtWorks on Davadi. “The children are excited to be involved in an art project that will be permanently displayed in the community,” Billyara said. “I am teaching them about Aboriginal culture and creation stories that are relevant to the whole of Australia mostly NSW and Queensland and how the tribes traded tools and objects that could not be found in their local area. “I am also teaching them about totems, symbols and how to use techniques to create a painting,” he said. “This will hopefully inspire them to paint more and have a better understanding of their everyday surroundings and how they were used in everyday life.” A washed-up piano has become a new scuplture in Tenterfield. 112571

STORMS over the past week are a stark reminder of the devastating floods of 2010-11. This week Tenterfield commemorated the events of 11 January, 2011 with the installation of a long-awaited memorial sculpture made from the remnants of a piano which was washed up on local soccer fields. Artist Michael Henrysson based the sculpture on a flood boat, the finishing touches to the project - a sail and flood marker on the mast - yet to be added. The project was funded by a CASP (Coun-

Voting farce
RE: Thumbs Down: The 12 December edition of the Free Times lead to some amused confusion ... on my part, at least. It would appear that, under Section 109 of the Waste Reduction & Recycling Act 2011, which apparently states (abbreviated form) “A person must not place any document in or on a motor vehicle without the express consent of ... the owner. That leaves parking officers in serious breach, unless, of course, they do not qualify as “a person. Such an interpretation is entirely understandable. Dick Howard, Swan Creek.
MARY Leahy in her support of the rates increase has skipped and twisted the issues. She tries to tell us the mayor is not allowed to steer the meeting towards a decision he wants. In fact, I have been involved in an act at council in session where the chairman has done just this. It happens in all organisations. The chairman usually does not vote; and if he does vote it is to maintain the status quo. If he does have two votes it allows him to use the first to air his own views, and if there is a tied vote he uses his second vote for no change. So there are three methods of voting for chairmen. One of those is no voting. The method used depends on the rules of the organisation concerned. A tied vote means legally no change. The chairman makes it clearer by using his vote for no change, as he should. Mary Leahy, to confuse us, says that after this vote for an increase was won all the councillors voted to take the matter to IPART; “so there was no casting vote! Surely there are organisations apart from the government ones that can teach councillors the proper ways to act in council? Until then we have a dysfunctional council. Jack Clark, River Tree via Stanthorpe.
Fair point RE: Letters 5 December - Jack Clark, Rivertree. Good on you Jack for having the guts to describe to the Tenterfield Shire community/constituents, just what puppets and self-opinionated councillors are running the show at Tenterfield. A perfect example is that self-praise letter (“Rates Stand) printed on the same page as your intelligent fair dinkum newsworthy letter. Andrew Pickets, Pretty Gully.
What a mix RELIGION and politics have so much in common. In my many years I have been involved in, and an observer, of both. The leaders seem to think that they are inviolable, own the only truth, and very often act in complete variance to their stated beliefs, while still maintaining altruistically, “we do this because we care. One invariable is that any incoming different government blames the outgoing old crowd for all the failures presently occurring, or even those that will happen in the future, while claiming to be providers of anything seen as remotely beneficial. Religion and politics! All the acclaim but none to blame ... Tom Edgar, Glen Aplin.
Focus elsewhere MARK Aubrey writes volumes about our lost freedoms under “bikie laws. How fortunate we are to have so vigilant and comprehending a watch dog keeping us informed. Perhaps he could detail some of the misbehaviour of previous governments from which we have been sheltered by his efforts? Dick Howard, Swan Creek.
Nothing new ON 17 December I saw a report that the powers that be in the rail industry are looking at bringing in the use of sand to make for a more efficient braking on our rail system. ‘They already use it in Victoria and NSW’, they said.
Well hello! Obviously they have not talked to their fathers or grandfathers, because it was standard practice on all engines, even back in the steam era. I must admit, I never realised that the practice had stopped as it was, to me anyway, logical that steel on steel needed assistance with friction when wet. It also came in handy pulling up hilly grades when the weather warranted it. The rocket scientists that design the new machines obviously figured that they knew more than the older one who put this natural safety design in the older engines. Surely the older diesel electrics still plying our rail system still have this feature attached. I would have thought that this just might have told them something. Obviously not! Bernie Noye, Warwick.
Time to vote AS the chairman of the New England Livestock Health and Pest Authority, which is soon to be merged into the new Local Land Services (LLS) from 1 January 2014, I would like to remind taxpayers of the opportunity that you have to vote for three directors to fill the remaining positions in the LLS in the Northern Tablelands. Four directors have already been appointed by the Minister with Hans Hietbrink as Chairman. To participate in this election, current LHPA ratepayers must enrol with one vote allocated to each holding. Advice about this enrolment should be received by all current ratepayers in the mail to your registered holding address or you can visit staff in the local offices for assistance. You will be advised about where and when voting will take place in 2014 once nominations close. It is pleasing that the majority of the New England LHPA staff will transition to the LLS, thus keeping the training and knowledge base that will be beneficial to landholders. Robyn Jackson, LHPA Chairman.

Enduring style THE team at Style Shoes understand the importance of correctly fitting school shoes. Just think about putting on a pair of school shoes and walking, running, riding and kicking your way in them every day, five days a week for the next 40 weeks, wearing them for more than a thousand hours and travelling as much as 2000 kilometres.
Parents expect their children to be comfortable in their school shoes and for them to last the school year. At Style Shoes in Warwick we measure each child’s foot to determine the correct style and size. Style Shoes stocks a large range of quality leather shoes in both Clarks and ROC brands. Leather uppers allow the foot to breathe and are the preferred
upper material to ensure healthy foot development. There are many styles to choose from including formal lace-up and slip-on shoes as well as velcro and lace-up leather joggers. Please call and see Melanie, Elsie and Brenda at Styles Shoes for all back-to-school footwear needs.
Save while gearing up TO your kids, shopping for new clothes, gear, and school supplies may be the only good thing about going back to school, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune every year. Here are 10 great ideas for how to get everything they need and save a few bucks doing it. Hold off buying trendier gear like lunch boxes and pencil cases. Kids may love a version they find earlier, but once they start school and see that their friends are all using another kind, they’ll beg you to upgrade them -- and that only results in wasted cash. Shop at end-of-summer sales. Kids wear short sleeve polo shirts all year long, so hit the big summer sales and snap up discounted clothes. Stick to the list. The
school’s supply list at the start of a new school year is daunting enough so don’t waste time and money on unlisted items. Extra supplies, while they may be cute, will probably never get used and just leave your pockets empty. Find basic supplies at the supermarket. Check weekly catalogues for great deals on stationery, and get your weekly grocery shopping done at the same time. Bonus: buying everything in one place will save time and fuel money! Let your kids raid the home-office supplies, then personalise them in unique ways. For example, decorate inexpensive plain, white binders with digital photos by creating a collage and inserting
the page into the plastic outer cover. Host a back-to-school swap. Round up a couple of other mums with kids the same gender as yours but different ages, and host an annual clothes swap. Trade toys and books, too! You’ll save a bundle. Plan lunch. When you remain in charge of what your child eats, you’ll save yourself money. Check the local supermarkets for sales - particularly post-Christmas hams. Buy bright. Lost school supplies may be a given, but gear that’s hard to miss can stave off the inevitable. Pack all their pencils, erasers, and other goodies into a bright backpack or pencil pouch to keep them from disappearing. Names on all items helps too.
Tips for a great start to year JUST like a fresh box of crayons, the new school year is ripe with possibility-the possibility to create something new. Fresh crayons and fresh starts - it can be a wonderful time of year. Take advantage of the clean slate by bringing some simple organising strategies into your home, making the transition back-to-school even more invigorating. Establish fresh routines Review what’s working well in your family’s daily routine… and what could use a pick-meup. If mornings are chaotic consider taking care of as many daytime preparations as possible the night before. Lay out clothes. Pack lunches. Set out the breakfast dishes and cereal. Pack the backpacks. Be prepared. Make any new systems kidfriendly so young helpers can help you get things checked off your to-do list. The more help you have, the less hassle, and more time for fun for everyone. For example, carve out a spot on a low shelf in the pantry to store lunch boxes and lunch supplies. Then make children responsible for putting away empty lunch boxes at the end of the day or even packing lunch for themselves. Install low coat hooks the kids can hang up their backpacks and store gear at the end of each day. Create a homework station If a task is simple to do, it’s more fun to do. Homework is no different. Decide on the best spot in your home to set up homework central. Take into consideration how
involved you need to be with homework and your children’s individual learning style. Do they focus better with people around or when working their his own? Is he better suited to sit at a table or curled up on the couch with a lap desk? Once you have a place picked out, gather together handy homework tools and supplies into a nearby bin, cabinet or drawer. Stock up on age appropriate supplies such as pens, pencils, erasers, paper, crayons, markers, a ruler, a calculator, a dictionary, basic craft supplies and a pencil sharpener. Communication Hub Your communication hub can include a family calendar, colored markers, pens and pencils, and a notepad for taking down phone messages. Consider colour-coding your family calendar by assigning each family member a color. If you’re a visual person
who needs to see things to remember them, consider using a bulletin board for posting messages, invites and your calendar, or take advantage of your built-in magnetic board known as the fridge door. Keep phone messages neat and tidy by using a family message book, a covered composition book used to keep a running tab of phone messages and notes. Remember not to forget Create a simple system by the door to help kids remember their new routine or special items they need to take each day: runners on sports day, violin on music day, and snacks on snack day. Hang a bin or basket by the door to collect the items, or create a fun little ’“dont forget” door hanger with a built-in pocket for a daily checklist. With these simple strategies, staying organised all school year is achievable.

What’s On Arts hub seeks helpers STARTED in 2011 as an arts hub for those with a disability or health problems, Stanthorpe’s Artworks on Davadi has matured into a community hub accessed by the broader community. Artworks has a vibrant program planned for 2014 and is now recruiting volunteers. Those interested are invited to attend an information evening at Artworks on Tuesday, 14 January at 6.30pm.
Light refreshments will be provided. “The Artworks volunteer programme has been established as a way for people to get involved with Artworks and their community,” co-ordinator Sonja Salzke said. “As a creative learning and sharing hub Artworks is looking for ‘crews’ to get involved in the cafe, the gallery, at fund-raising events, in the community cinema space
and in the new ‘enterprise initiative’,” Ms Salzke said. “Volunteering and being involved in Artworks is fun. You have the chance to offer your skills or to develop new ones. “It is a great way to meet people and in turn it helps build and support our community as a whole.” For more information, call 4681 4158. In April 2013, Coolmiunda Olives was awarded first place in the organic olive section at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Mrs Owen said the Boxing Day event had been received with enthusiasm by guests, and plans are under way to stage similar events at “Nunyara”. Mrs Owen said future patrons to “Grooving in the Grove” would also be able to taste-test the wide variety of olives and olive products produced on the property.

THE tranquillity of olive groves overlooking stunning views of Coolmunda Dam provided a wonderful setting for the first “Grooving in the Grove” musical event near Inglewood on Boxing Day. Dr Colin Owen and his wife Gesine invited a large number of family and friends to their property “Nunyara”, 19km east of Inglewood, to be entertained by a talented musical duo Peter
and Julie from Nobby. Peter (flute, saxophone and vocal) and Julie ( acoustic and electric guitar and vocal) played a wide range of music covering many genres including jazz, swing, rock, Latin and classical to an appreciative audience. “Nunyara” is home to the renowned Coolmunda Olive Grove established in 1998. It boasts 7000 flourishing olive trees and the latest equipment to process the organic olives and olive oil.

WARWICK
STATELY QUEENSLANDER THIS stately old Queenslander has been lovingly restored to its former glory by the owners who are now reluctantly selling due to illness. The home, which will suit the most discerning buyer, boasts four very large bedrooms with an office off the bullnose side verandah, and would lend the
home to a professional person or a fifth bedroom for a large family. A formal lounge and a formal dining room of a bygone era, there is a chef’s delight kitchen with a large walk-in pantry, large renovated bathroom with old-style bath and separate shower, a sunroom or craft
room surrounded by natural lighting. The home has recently been painted inside and out, with the landscaping and entertainment area a delight to behold, and for the handyman a four-bay Colorbond garage with electric roller door and workshop is yet another feature.

Shame it’s a brekkie turn-off for viewers Studio 10 Weekdays on Network Ten, 8.30am-11am.
non-stick frypans and mineral make-up. Just like every other stale morning show that has been axed in the past, there’s nothing new, the discussion is not controversial or groundbreaking, it’s just rehashing old ground. Studio 10 is disappointing though because there is potential for a good show, light-hearted but informative, much like The Project. But unlike its counterpart in the evening, Studio 10 doesn’t provide the audience with anything new. – Danielle Galvin

THURSDAY, JANUARY 9
IT MIGHT have all of the right ingredients, but a successful breakfast or morning show on commercial television is not an easy venture. That’s the case when it comes to Channel Ten’s latest breakfast buzz, Studio 10. Celebrity guests, well-known journalists and even media legend Ita Buttrose can’t save the show from its fate. It’s just another failed attempt at engaging and attracting a difficult audience but with the exact same
formula every other commercial venture follows and it’s the same mistake every time. There’s no chemistry or connection between the presenters; Ita Buttrose, Joe Hildebrand, reporter Sarah Harris and author and journalist Jessica Rowe. They are all interesting enough and with plenty of opinions but there’s no spark. It’s just a group of people sitting around a table talking about the dangers of social media, the latest movie reviews and some generic chit-chat interspersed with ads for
Connecting people and communities SFT

Heatwave takes its toll By STEVE GRAY RECENT storm activity and a heatwave across the Darling Downs has forced a large number of birds and animals into care, said local wildlife carer Lyn Gynther. In particular, Tawny Frogmouth owls and possums have been brought in after storms dislodged them from nests, Ms Gynther said. Last week’s heatwave had also seen a large number of flying foxes dropping out of roosts due to heat exhaustion. “The heat has certainly thrown
challenges up for those looking after animals in care,” Ms Gynther said. “We’ve been trying to keep them cool, whereas usually we are trying to keep them warm.” Joeys had to be wrapped in wet towels as local temperatures peaked above 40 degress Celsius. A number of possums rescued after recent storms weighed in at 1kg and are still too young to successfully fend for themselves. “They are all doing well and will be released at around 1600 grams,” Ms Gynther said.
“Our ‘tiny tot’ for 2013 being a 42 gram ‘Pinkie’ brushtail possum is currently 451 grams and doing well also. He will join his mates when he is ready to reunite with his own kind,” she said. “A 2.5 kilogram red-necked wallaby joey was also rescued and taken into care and after some frustrating hours of convincing it that it was too small to be without its mother, it has also settled down very well and is now over 5kg and becoming very independent.” Ms Gynther is a member of a wildlife carers’ group operating un-
der the auspices of the Ipswich Koala Protection Society since she and others formed the group mid last year. Carers must be licensed under an approved organisation to operate and their formation as a sub-branch of the Ipswich society means they have the support of an additional 50 or more active carers and experienced personnel, and training facilities. “We have carers and rescuers for bats, marsupials - possums, wallabies, koalas, kangaroos, gliders, echidnas - birds, amphibians and reptiles and our rescue service is available 24/7,” she said.

Garden opens for Blake Snuff the smokes THIRTY years ago Michelle Burton raided neighbours’ and friends’ gardens for cuttings, garden clubs were prevailed upon, tube stock found and clumps divided. These days Pine View at Liston is a mature garden of five acres, full of shade areas, mature trees and water features. It’s better known to locals as the agapanthus garden for its acre of the plants, but it also features hydrangeas, red hot pokers and hippeastrums. Ms Burton will again open her garden for charity throughout January, this time to benefit cerebral palsy sufferer Blake Zorzi and his family. Blake is an extreme care 11-year-old and the money raised will help his family support
IT’S probably the most often made, and most frequently failed, New Year’s resolution… to give up the smokes. There are so many good reasons to kick the tobacco habit, and so many reasons why nicotine sneaks back up at you. Donna Nevin reckons she can cure the habit in 60 minutes, and she is so confident that her ‘All Puffed Out’ system offers a lifetime guarantee. “Everyone knows cigarettes are not good for your health,” Ms Nevin said.
him to be able to live his life to the maximum. As Blake gets older his needs are upgraded to different equipment required to live a relatively normal life. There are lots of seats around the garden, so come and sit among the trees or verandah and enjoy the bird life and the peace and tranquillity of this garden. There is access to all parts of the garden for wheelchairs and prams. Pine View will be open from 9am to 5pm (Queensland time) on 10-12 January and 1719 January - Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Entry in only $5. Morning and afternoon tea is available. For more details please phone Michelle on 4686 1249.
“They are also going up in price by five to 10 per cent a year, and they’re not socially acceptable anymore.” She said most smokers spend between $200 and $1000 each month on their addiction. “Health insurers will no longer support your bad habit,” Ms Nevin said. “Cigarettes make everything smelly - your hair, your hand, body, clothes and your breath smells bad and stale. “Your skin ages more quickly and your teeth are stained.”
Ms Nevin said smokers can be re-programmed using clinical hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). “We are so confident in this system that we are still the only people who back up our cigarette session with a lifetime guarantee,” she said. “Literally more than 95.6 per cent of people quit cigarettes in 60 minutes. “For those that do not, they quit during the free follow-up session covered by our lifetime guarantee.”

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Get yourself in tune with the order of life as it is. There’s not much point swirling above reality in a cloud of whirlwind ideas. Mercury is in the particular part of Capricorn that offers blessings to those who don’t fight reality but rather decode it and figure out how to relax with it. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) With four planets in Capricorn, pulling gravity towards all things pragmatic and earthy, yours is an important part to play. Fortunately you have Jupiter on your side. Warm people up when they get too cold. Melt hearts when they forget to open up and flow. Keep it sensitive and kind. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) The earthy Capricorn sun is confusing for Lions. It is simple, mundane, nose down, tail-up practicality. God is behaving like a brick-layer – getting the job done. There’s not a lot of room for shining individuality. Be wise. Sum up the circumstances and go with them, as you can. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) There are four planets in Capricorn. That mostly suits you well. Decisions will be made that are less than perfect, but they will serve the greater good. Trust that events are heading in the generally correct direction, even if the paperwork is a little shoddy. There is fun to be had.
Trivia by Ric Allport
All puzzles distributed by Auspac Media
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Though one would expect Scorpions to be having a bit of a struggle now, you aren’t struggling at all. You are much more of a pragmatist than you’re generally given credit for. The Aquarian moon is a little confusing at the beginning of the week. Idealisms aren’t your forte. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Lay low. Even centaurs have to rest. Having done your best to goad others into action, you are now having to deal with the fact that they listened to your call. It would be best to pull back and let them get to it. The alignment of the planets isn’t really set up for you to get traction. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) With four planets now in Capricorn, you should be ready to party. The fact that Pluto continues to be one of them, sobers things up a bit. Pluto’s intention really is to get us to remember how important it is to appreciate our lives and our loves. That’s a lesson not to be trifled with. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) The moon is shining her little soft sliver of light in Aquarius, at the beginning of the week. She is supporting you even if others aren’t. As the four planets in Capricorn bring most things down to earth, it is your job to keep the flame of visionary madness alive. We need it. Hold strong. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) With four planets in Capricorn, you feel held. You feel like your lovely river of feeling has a bed that gives it form and substance. Practical matters are being taken care of. This frees you up to get on with the things that matter most. Create, dream, envision, disappear into love.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) Venus has gone retrograde, meaning that delights are more likely to come introspectively than overtly. To take some time out, extracting yourself from others needs for a moment, and getting even a little taste of aloneness, will rejuvenate you. Shake off distractions and recharge.

NOON
ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) Uranus and Mars are directly opposed. Worst case scenario is barrel-loads of frustration. Best case scenario is that you will have a major revelation about not needing to take the hard path. The liberation option is yours if you stop in your tracks and do some serious contemplating.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) Though you are feeling strong, life is throwing you a selection of curveballs designed to test that strength. Prevarication is not an option. The moon is on your side early in the week, firing up your feelings and giving you the passion required to defend your vision. Stick with it.

Nationals candidate for the federal seat of New England, Richard Torbay, was dumped by the party. Debate continued over the proposed route for a new powerline from Warwick to Stanthorpe.

Road closures, emergenc y rescues, treacherous roads and rising floodwaters marred the Australia Day long weekend throughout the region. As the severe weather system from ex tropical cyclone Oswald moved into New South Wales on Monday, emergency services remained extremely busy coordinat ing the response and providing assistance to residents. Sixteen evacuatio ns were carried out in Fitzroy Street, so our crews are being kept very busy. June THE announcement of the preferred route for a new powerline from Warwick to Stanthorpe seemed to please no one. Three men died after drinking homebrewed spirits at a farm at Ballandean. The father of one of the deceased was later charged. A savage storm flattened properties at Pratten and Bony Mountain.

QUEENSLAND Government ministers switched on the lights at Stanthorpe’s CF White Oval. Tenterfield Shire held eight public meetings as the council tried to sell a proposal to increase rates by more than 80 per cent in the next decade.

November SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council started work on the 26km pipeline from Warwick to Allora. Council also approved a huge

new grain storage facility for Allora, but refused a development application for a wind farm at Dalveen, despite council officers’ recommendation. The refusal is being appealed. An estimated 18,000 attended
an open day at Wellcamp airport, under construction.
December MAYOR Peter Petty’s casting vote saves a proposal to apply for a Spe-
cial Rates Variation which could see Tenterfield Shire rates skyrocket. Amid repairs, a 300-tonne rock rolls onto Cunningham’s Gap, closing the highway for days. Tenterfield’s main street refurbishment drew flak as it disrupted Christmas trade. Savage hail storms caused an estimated $50 million damage to crops on the Granite Belt.

And it’s stumps for 2013 The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
SO here we are in 2014, I hope everyone is back on deck after an enjoyable festive season, and I trust that Santa was kind to you all and that now you have had a chance to digest your New Year’s resolutions you are not regretting them. M.J. Clarke and Co have certainly given Aussie cricket lovers the perfect start to 2014. An historic whitewash of the old enemy, the Poms, has breathed new life back into Australian cricket. Let’s not take this win lightly; a five nil whitewash does not happen often in fact it has only happened on two previous occasions. Mitch Johnson and his mo and co have bowled their way into immortality. Not many at the beginning of the series gave them a shot at one win let alone five zip. That is other than Glenn (Pidge) McGrath who was almost as quick to declare we would win five nil as he was with the ball. Suck eggs Beefy Botham who declared the Poms certain winners at five nil. The final wicket on day three at the SCG will remain in my memory for some time as will the final words of one of the great callers of the game and definitely the funniest, Kerry O’Keeffe who announced prior to the game he was hanging up his tonsils. Overwhelmed, Skull bellowed into the microphone at the SCG, “Stand up if your five nil… stand up… stand up” and to a man, woman and child that’s just what they did. Gives me goose bumps. (Thanks Santa) I thought I would take readers on a quick look back on all that was sport and spin in 2013 before the highlights became a distant memory. As we hurtle head long into the new year I hope it is a good one for you all. Here are some of the 2013 highlights. My normal column returns next week. - Casey
The Destroyers aka the Heroes - Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Mitch Johnson and bowling coach Craig McDermott. JANUARY 2013 CRICKET lovers were mourning the death of Tony Greig. While the Aussies celebrated a series clean sweep against Sri Lanka many cricket fans were pondering how selectors would fill the void following the retirement of Mike Hussey. There was news that the Blues were starting their State of Origin assault early with Laurie Daley, Trent Barrett and Brad Fittler putting half-backs and fiveeighths who were in the mix for selection through their paces in a special training run in early January. That clearly was not successful. You have to wonder if they are trying a new tactic this year with Brad Fittler set to play a part in the NRL season opening nine’s competition in NZ for the tri-colours. Crazy Freddie. The crew from Water Ski Queensland hit Storm King Dam finally cracking it for a perfect weekend of weather. They are back again this weekend. Jason Sketee hammered 43 off only 16 balls to help his team to a big win over Central Downs after the Warwick bowling attack restricted their opponents to a score of only 46 in their Mitchell Shield game. At 34, Warwick cricketer Rod Hansen notched up
his first fifer in 19 seasons proving good things come to those who wait. On the local rugby league scene Goondiwindi confirmed they would be nominating two sides in the BRL in season 2013. FEBRUARY 2013 WET weather took its toll on many sporting activities in the month of February. The C.F. White Oval farewelled their turf wicket; replaced by a shiny new younger model which has proved to be a winner. Souths claimed bragging rights when eventually weather allowed the first game on the new turf. Wattles sounded their intentions to be a force to be dealt with in the TRL with a sound win over 2012 Ipswich Rugby League Premiers in a pre-season trial. The longest ongoing drama since ‘Days of Our Lives’ broke early in February. The Federal Australian Sports Minister announced the “darkest day in Australian Sport” and so the ASADA investigation into illicit substance taking in the AFL and NRL began… and continues and continues. It did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the NRL All Stars clash at a packed Suncorp. Proving persistence pays dividends the G.J. Gardner Homes Warwick Bulls hoisted the Slade Shield Trophy for the first time in 25 years with a comprehensive win over Goondiwindi. MARCH 2013 THE girls led the way in March. The Southern Stars - the Ladies Aussie Cricket side - grabbed their sixth World Cup victory as M.J. Clarke and Co suffered an embarrassing loss in India. The undisputed queen of the turf, Black Caviar returned to the track with a blistering win in the Lightning Stakes. In what looked like an exercise gallop she smashed the 35-year-old race record. Homeworkgate exposed a raft of issues within the Australian cricket ranks as players were stood down and sent home from the third test in India. Former Brisbane Roar players, Karl Dodd and Royce Brownlee headed an all-star line up as the Brisbane APL club played an exhibition game at the International Club. Unfortunately the planned showcase of football was stymied by wet weather. Several games were forced to be cancelled when rising flood waters disrupted some teams travel. The Warwick Water Rats revelled in the wet conditions to claim the Country Cup for the fourth year and the Warwick Cowboys upset Brothers in their season opener. Wallangarra hosted the BRL season opening round robin while Killarney posted their intentions for the season with a good win. Cricketers on the Granite Belt put their gear away for another season as Souths added another premiership to their belt. In Warwick Wheatvale defeated Maryvale to win the 2013 Condamine Cup. APRIL 2013 ‘NELLIE,’ Black Caviar took on the best in the T.J Smith Stakes in Sydney and kicked some proverbial. As we watched and waited to see what her next move would be trainer Peter Moody announced we had seen the last of the mighty mare and in a flash she was off to stud - undefeated in 25 starts. Simply, a sensational champion the like of which we will not see again for many years if ever. At the same time her half-brother was knocked down to the BC3 syndicate for $5 million and as we all know now… that ended in tears all round. The simmering ‘lover’s tiff’ between Gai Waterhouse and John Singleton erupted into all-out warfare during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. Partnership… all over red rover! Golfers across the district were in full swing and work on the all important deck at the 19th hole in Warwick was well underway. Patron and Secretary of the Stanthorpe Bowls Club, Jack Prandolini OAM was inducted into the Bowls Queensland Hall of Fame. The BRL and TRL rep sides were announced as the football season got serious. The Anzac Day shoot at Inglewood SSAA was once again a big success. MAY 2013 THE countdown to Origin was well and truly on. The 1959 Queensland side was invited to attend the 2013 Naming of the Team Dinner. Among them, former Stan-
thorpe coach Bobby Cook. In local league Goondiwindi Blue were flexing their muscle in the BRL. In the NRL the Bunnies were making every post a winner and the Eels notched up one of their rare wins for 2013 when they downed the Broncos in a boil over. Quade Cooper remained on the nose with Wallabies coach Robbie Deans while Israel Folau continued to remind rugby league administrators of the talent they had passed up. Stanthorpe’s United Redbacks Football Club had a big weekend in the local competition notching up wins in all grades. Alfie Langer won over the Texas community proving he still has what it takes to draw a crowd despite it being over ten years since he last laced up a footy boot. The district bowlers were getting serious. Mark Spiller got the better of Eliseo Zamprogno in the Group three playoff final and progressed to the district qualifying final played in Inglewood in June. The lights went on at Sullivan and Crisp Oval as Member for Southern Downs, Lawrence Springborg flicked the switch on a new lighting system. JUNE 2013 HALFWAY through the year and I joined the QRL South West Country side on the 1700klm trek to Hughenden for the Outback Carnival. It was a long trip to get there and even longer one home but success was ours as the boys once again brought back the Outback Title. Michael Bloomfield and Michael Marshall were named in the Queensland Outback side. The team had success when they played a Northern United team in a curtain raiser to a Northern Pride game in Cairns late in June. The British Lions arrived in OZ ready to roar into action against the Wallabies for a much anticipated series. Roger Federer, Mr Tennis notched up the 900th match win of his career during the quarter final of the French Open at Roland Garros. Three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal went on to win the title. The Warwick Cowboys were not enjoying the best of seasons but pushed competition heavyweights all the way when they fell just short after trailing 24-4 in a game at Fr Ranger Oval. There were wins for the Reserve Grade and Under 18s on the day. Chris McEvoy enjoying a sabbatical in England unpacked his cricket bat and stepped out for the Alder Club in Liverpool. McEvoy took 5/73 before smacking 110 off 109 deliveries. In the NRL the Bunnies were still ahead of the pack with the Eels wallowing at the bottom of the barrel. The BRL Patron’s Cup went ‘Pink’ for a cause. In a nail-biter the Inglewood Roosters held out Gundy Blue to claim the Cup for another year. JULY 2013 THEY were packed to the rafters at Suncorp as the Mighty Maroons made it one game a piece. Paul Gallen cemented his place as Maroons’ public enemy number one with his one-two on Nate Myles’ chin. Result… no send off! (booooo) but the rules of Origin are changed forever. The decider came down to guts and get up and go and again the moment was Queensland’s. Eight is great. We also saw more than necessary of a streaker who stepped and shimmied his way through the security cordon. Goose. There was a change in leadership in politics but more importantly Australian cricket showed Mickey Arthur the door and welcomed in his replacement Boof Lehmann in their best move ever.
Stanthorpe lawn bowler Mick Mills took out the Southern Downs Men’s Open Singles. The President’s singles was won by Texas player Les Spinks. Closer to home Jamie Zamprogno was successful in the B Grade Singles Championship at the Summit receiving congratulations for Australian Bowls champion Brett Wilkie. BRL fixtures wrapped up with Gundy Blue claiming the Minor Premiership ahead of Inglewood Roosters, Tenterfield Tigers and the Killarney Cutters. The Cowboys enjoyed a welcome change of luck with a win over Oakey in all grades at Fr Ranger Oval. On the International scene things weren’t too rosy for the Aussie cricketers, hammered in England. Even the Courier Mail dedicated their editorial to the failures of the cricketers overlooking point scoring pollies, world news and the birth of significant royal babies. AUGUST 2013 THE Inglewood Roosters defeated Gundy Blue in the President’s Cup winning the right to host the 2013 BRL grand final. The Killarney Cutters played with a renewed determination overcoming Gundy at home and booked their place in the grand final. There was plenty of raw emotion on display when the Cutters raised the premiership trophy for the first time in over 50 years in Inglewood the following week. The all-round good news story made the Courier Mail and got plenty of airtime on radio. Coedie Tandy was named Player of the Final.
2013 BRL premiers Killarney Cutters celebrate.
Coedie Tandy flies high as the Cutters force their way into the final.
The Maroons in action at Suncorp; on the way to eight straight.
The annual Holden Scramble again proved popular in Warwick and for the first time in the three years of the event it was taken out by a Warwick team. The successful team of Joely Singleton, Don (the Duff Man) Warrener, Geordie Russell and Peter Morrison cleaned up. The streets of Leyburn roared into action as over 200 cars representing nine decades of motoring competed in the unique annual event. Warwick boxer Christopher Brackin claimed the coveted South East Queensland and Queensland title at the Australian Golden Gloves championships in Brisbane.
Last Thursday the club held a monthly triples with ten teams participating - and excellent turn out considering it was the day after the new year. Results: D. Warr, B. Black, E. Welsh d D. Mulchay, T. Mulchay, B. Millard 17-9. J. Cochran, D. Christensen, G. Dent d K. Gimm, C. Johnson, B. Gibson 15-13. D. Neal, T. Wright, B. Johnstone d J. Ryatt, G. Green, B. Bailey 20-15. E. Spence, G. Shelley, G. Nicklick d Southern Cross (no card) 14-9. C. Lambert, P. Collis, M. Dodson d V. Smith, E. Diery, V. Nelson 19-15. Round 2: Skips Only: G. Dent d Southern Cross 27-3. E. Welsh d B. Johnstone 12-5. B. Gibson d B. Bailey 18-9. M. Dodson d B. Millard 26-11. V. Nelson d G. Nichlick 20-5. The winners were E. Welsh’s team (29 points) with G. Dent’s team runners-up (27 points). SOUTHERN DOWNS RIFLE CLUB THE club held its first shoot for the year on Sunday 5 January on the 300 yard range. The day was a great improvement, not being as hot as previous days, however the wind was not kind to some of the shooters. The scores for Target Rifle (Iron Sights) out of a possible 105 were Jim Dickenson 105.11, Les Pedersen 96.2 and Chris Neave 94.5. Congratulations to Jim Dickenson who had a great shoot, Chris Neave had a bad start on the first range but recovered well on the second, only dropping 3 points. 2013 – The year that was…
SEPTEMBER 2013 SEPTEMBER heralds the end of the footy season. Stanthorpe United made it another clean sweep in the Football Stanthorpe Grand Finals winning all three grades. Stanthorpe Junior Rugby League hosted the Warwick and District Junior grand finals. The Goondiwindi under 16s capped off a great year to win their grand final defeating a determined Collegians side. The Gatton Hawks upstaged their more fancied rival, Valleys to claim their first TRL premiership in 24 years. Former BRL and Gremlins player Jason Wilmot won the John McDonald Medal for player of the grand final. On the national stage Hawthorn put the despair of a previous premiership loss behind them with a win over Fremantle. AFL’s golden boy Gary Ablett claimed his second Brownlow Medal. After dominating the NRL season the Bunnies fell short at the end of the season. The Roosters claimed the Minor Premiership going on with the job to defeat Manly in the grand final. Manly halfback Daly CherryEvans was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for best and fairest in the grand final, the first player from a losing side to get the nod since 1993. Raheen Stud progeny produced four winners on an eight race card at Doomben delighting stud owners Di and Basil Nolan. OCTOBER 2013 THE end of the football season and thoughts turn to the Spring Racing Carnival and the local racing fraternities gear up for their annual cup meetings. Both Warwick Turf Club and the Stanthorpe Jockey Club hosted bumper crowds to their cup meetings on consecutive weekends. Honours in the Warwick Credit Union Warwick Cup went to the well-fancied Jack’s Back. In Central Motors Holden Stanthorpe Cup former jockey and steward now trainer, Lacey Morris combined with apprentice Faith Elliott to take out the event with Trickin. The Man in the Mirror, the enigmatic Wayne Bennett honoured a promise to appear as guest speaker at a fund-raising dinner in Stanthorpe and had the crowd in the palm of his hand sharing his thoughts and experiences on life and the game of rugby league. At the Official Opening of the C.F. White Oval Field Lighting Project, the lights were turned on just in time for the start of the cricket season. The project was a true coming together of organisations and the community. The C.F. White Oval now proudly sports the most sophisticated lux lighting outside of the metropolitan area. NOVEMBER 2013 YOURS truly took the plunge (not literally thank heavens) and boarded the Pacific Jewel enroute to the Melbourne Cup. Despite the doubters and there were plenty
Locally Paige Donald made it three wins in succession at the annual Inglewood Junior Triathlon Shoot. On the golfing scene our intrepid golfers who had ventured onto their various courses in all elements throughout the year wound down towards Christmas with their final monthly medal games. In Wallangarra Steve Hampstead claimed the Mug of Mugs. In Stanthorpe the Men’s Golfer of the Year was a close thing. Mark McCosker declared the winner by a bee’s knee. Lyn Ludlow grabbed the ladies title from the clutches of Trish Fittock. Stanthorpe looks to have unearthed a great talent in junior Hannah Reeves. You are sure to hear more of Hannah in 2014.
In the final Monthly Medal in Warwick Phil Drewery took out the division one prize and Peter McBain division two.
Out of the straight and eventual winner Fiorente is already well positioned. at no stage did I require my water wings. The 2013 Melbourne Cup was a triumph for Gai Waterhouse and jockey Damien Oliver as Fiorente strode to the lead in the Flemington straight giving more than one bookie a stitch. Less than a week after the Cup, there was a harsh reminder of the ever present danger jockeys face with news that a fall at the Sunshine Coast had cost experienced horse woman Desiree Gill her life. Not for her the glamour of Flemington. She was one of the thousands of jockeys who ride each week and who never reach those lofty heights. Closer to home, the gates to Haworth Park, Leyburn were opened for the first time. 90 Supercross riders from around the nation descended on the small town to compete on Australia’s largest Supercross track. On the local cricket scene in the Stanthorpe fixtures Souths were showing the rest of the competition a clean set of heels while in Warwick Diggers RSL were quickly out of the blocks notching some early wins as the season got into full swing. Also in the hunt with early wins were Wheatvale. No major surprises as the Australian cricket side for the first Ashes Test at the Gabba was announced. In England the Kangaroos were carving up all comers. At the Gabba the Aussies staged a remarkable fight back to go one-up in the Ashes. Mitchell Johnson terrorised the Pommies with speed and accuracy and the
sledging was legendary. English batsman Jonathan Trott left the Ashes tour and returned home with a stress-related illness. International Cricket is all the poorer after the retirement of the ‘little master’ Sachin Tendulkar. DECEMBER 2013 DECEMBER began on a high note with the Kangaroos demolishing the Kiwis in the final of the World Cup at Old Trafford.
Talented Junior Hannah Reeves in action.
And at Sporters, a win to Clarky signalled Santa was close. No early Christmas gifts for Sharks supporters. The Rugby League Commission handed the Sharks a $1m fine and suspended Coach Shane Flanagan over the supplements scandal. And still after more than ten long months we wait for ASADA to make a move. More action in Days of Our Lives. As thoughts turned to Santa, cricket lovers focused on the Ashes as Australia took what many thought was an improbable if not impossible two nil lead in Adelaide. With the return of the Urn at stake the summer caravan of cricket rolled on to Perth with mutterings of three in a row. The Australian public were right behind every ball as the Aussies went to an unbeatable three nil up in the series and the Urn reclaimed. No talk of dead rubbers - just talk of a possible five nil whitewash. Graeme Swann retired mid series and headed home as England descended into disarray. Despite Captain Cook’s best efforts the Poms looked like a ship without a rudder by Boxing Day. In grand style after the visit of the man in the red suit, the yachts headed out of the heads bound for Hobart while the Aussies continued their demolition of the Poms in Melbourne. Wild Oats XI was first out of the heads and first into Hobart. Overall honours to Victoire. At the MCG the Aussies made five out of five a possibility recording another resounding win. That all culminated a little after new year on Jane McGrath Pink Day at the SCG with “Stand Up if you’re Five Nil, Stand up”. A five-nil whitewash just peachy - what a way to say goodbye to 2013 and welcome 2014. Happy New Year.
