made no apology for penalising drivers doing the wrong thing, adding that the use of mobile phones was the current biggest driver distraction issue. “The recent increase in the penalty for the use of a mobile phone while driving is reflective of the danger it creates,” he said. “Our intelligence informs us that drivers up to the age of 24 have the highest frequency of fatal and serious collisions where driver distraction is involved,” Mr Hill said. But they were not the only age group distracted by technology when behind the wheel, he said. Mr Hill said phone calls, text mes-

from 23 December 2013 to 3 January 2014. The fatalities include the death of a St Albans man who died in hospital on New Year’s Eve following a single vehicle crash in Rockbank on Christmas night. And on 29 December a 32-year-old Maribyrnong motorcyclist died after his motorcycle collided with a car on Whitehall St in Footscray. “Every death on our roads is a tragedy and something we believe is avoidable,” Mr Hill said. “I urge all road users to turn off the distractions and switch on when you are on the roads.”

BRIMBANK has had one of the highest number of drivers caught using their mobile phone while behind the wheel, with more than 1000 drivers booked during the last financial year. Victoria Police statistics reveal that 1347 penalty notices were issued to drivers in Brimbank caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, across the 2012-13 financial period. The results were a slight improvement from the 2011/12 period, when 1653 drivers were issued with a penalty notice for the same offence. In addition, a staggering 22 Learner drivers or P1 probationary licence

holders were caught using any mobile phone in Brimbank during 2012/13 period. This is an increase from the 17 offences recorded for that age group in 2011/12. The results come as police wrap up their festive blitz Operation Break Up which targeted distracted drivers as part of the Summer Stay road enforcement campaign. The operation targeted the fatal five road user behaviours: speed, impairment, distraction, fatigue and seat belts. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said he

PUPPIES in the western suburbs are falling victim to the deadly parvovirus following a spike in cases referred to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in recent months. Sunshine, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee have all been named as hotspots for the infection, which has seen 34 cases admitted in the last three months and five last weekend alone. Head Veterinarian of in-patients at Lort Smith, Dr Andrew Kapsis said it was essential to vaccinate puppies against such deadly viruses and ensure the full course of vaccinations was completed. “This is a serious disease,” Dr Kapsis said.

“Without treatment about 95 per cent of infected dogs will die and even with treatment about 30 per cent won’t make it.” Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that is spread through the faeces of infected dogs and can survive in the environment, such as local parks, for many months. “You don’t need to have direct contact between dogs for the virus to spread,” Dr Kapsis said. “It can be transmitted through contact with contaminated faeces in the environment, on contaminated shoes, clothing or other objects, such as balls.” Dr Kapsis said the symptoms of parvovirus would start showing within two to seven

days and may include pets losing appetite, becoming lethargic and developing vomiting, profuse bloody diarrhoea and dehydration. He said severely affected dogs could go into shock from dehydration and sepsis, which often resulted in sudden death. Dr Kapsis said treatment for parvovirus was also expensive, due to the need for intensive care and isolation required during a lengthy hospital stay. “I can’t stress strongly enough the importance of protecting your dog against this horrific disease,” Dr Kapsis said. The Lort Smith Animal Hospital is Australia’s largest not for profit veterinary hospital and provides discounted vaccination rates.

It is believed the victim was cut off by a small dark grey Hyundai Excel hatchback while driving between Ballarat and Boundary roads on 28 November 2013, about 12.30pm. The two cars stopped in the far left emergency lane where the victim was punched in the face by the driver of the Excel and further attacked after falling to the ground. He was then left unconscious on the side of the road. Police have released an image of a man who they believe may be able to assist them with their inquiries. He is described as Middle Eastern in appearance, aged in his late twenties to early thirties, around 175cm to 178cm tall with short dark hair and was wearing a red or pink hoodie and black pants. THE EPA Victoria’s summer litter crackdown is underway with cigarette butts the key focus. The EPA launched a new mobile litter reporting site this summer to help combat the littering problem along with their Summer Litter Campaign. EPA CEO John Merritt said more than 90 per cent of the $3.5 million in fines issued for littering in 2012 were for butts thrown from cars. He added that cigarette butts also made up about 50 per cent of the litter generated in Victoria. “So, no apologies, those caught littering from cars will face hefty fines - including a maximum penalty of $577 for flicking a lit cigarette,” Mr Merritt said. Figures also reveal that around 25 of bushfires in Victoria’s park and forests were caused by discarded cigarette butts. The EPA’s state wide Summer Litter Campaign will run until Labour Day weekend in March. Surgery funding boost By CHARLENE MACAULAY WESTERN Health will share in a $15 million State Government grant to boost elective surgeries across its three hospitals. Western Health, which manages the Sunshine, Williamstown and Western Hospitals, has received a $275,000 grant to perform an additional 120 nose and throat operations, which will predominantly be undertaken at Sunshine Hospital and cut waiting list times for children. Western Health also received a

$338,000 grant in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Services, which will provide 100 patients on the Western Health elective surgery waiting list with the opportunity to have their surgery at an earlier time at Bacchus Marsh Hospital. The types of surgery to be performed in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Service include orthopaedic, general, gynaecology and ear, nose and throat surgery. Figures from the Victorian Health Services Performance Report reveal

that Western Hospital’s elective surgery list has almost doubled in the past year, with more than 2000 patients waiting for a variety of operations. At Sunshine Hospital, the elective surgery waiting list has jumped from 1425 in the June 2012 quarter to 2130 in the June 2013 quarter, while the list dropped by more than 200 patients at Williamstown Hospital over the past year, with 402 patients waiting for elective surgery. “Western Health is extremely pleased to have received two addition-

al funding packages for elective surgery to treat patients between January and June 2014,” Western Health Acting Executive Director of Operations Claire Culley said. “Western Health continues to experience increased demand for elective surgery due to the rapid growth in the number of people living in its catchment area. “The additional funding streams provide an opportunity for a greater number of patients to be treated across the health service.”

Hoons feel the heat By YASEMIN TALAT POLICE nabbed three hoon drivers and impounded their vehicles within three hours last Thursday night. Two motorcyclists in Altona North allegedly began racing down Grieve Parade and were detected doing speeds of 141km/h in a 70km/h zone. The motorcyclists were intercepted by the Hobsons Bay Highway Patrol team. A 40-year-old man from Airport West and a 35-year-old man from Keilor East both lost their motorcycles under the hoon legislation for 30 days as a result. The riders will also have to pay $741 to have their vehicles released and will face court for serious traffic offences. “Once again, I’m at a loss to explain why I’m using the hoon laws to take the vehicles of riders that should know better and adhere to the road rules, especially at this busy and dangerous time of the year,” Leading Senior Constable Norman McDonald said. Less than three hours later a black Mazda CX7 allegedly drove through a red light in Broadmeadows. Broadmeadows police intercepted the vehicle that allegedly reached a speed of 190km/h in a 70km/h zone. A 22-year-old Taylors Lakes man who was driving the vehicle was found to have a suspended licence. When questioned by police the man allegedly claimed he was just going to get some petrol. The Mazda was impounded under hoon legislation for 30 days at a cost of $703. The driver is expected to be charged on summons with driving at a speed dangerous, driving while suspended and disobeying a traffic control signal.

Former mayor makes stand for St Albans By YASEMIN TALAT FORMER Brimbank mayor Natalie Suleyman is hoping to make a political comeback and represent the people of St Albans in a new role. Ms Suleyman was last month named the preselected Australian Labor Party candidate for the new State seat of St Albans, over fellow Labor Party member Anthony van der Craats. An internal vote among Labor Party members resulted in Ms Suleyman gaining a staggering 93 per

cent of the total votes. “I’m very humbled and overwhelmed by the enormous support of the local Labor members and I’m honoured to have been preselected as a Labor candidate for the new seat of St Albans,” Ms Suleyman said. Ms Suleyman said she felt passionate about representing the St Albans community, especially having lived in St Albans her whole life. Her highest priorities for the area included fixing St Albans and Furlong Rd rail crossings.

“Labor has committed to fixing St Albans station and also Furlong Rd rail crossing,” she said. “I think there needs to be much more money invested towards the infrastructure in the West, things such as the railway crossings are important, public transport, linking our networks and Sunshine Hospital, they are my priorities,” she said. Since leaving Brimbank Council in 2008 Ms Suleyman has continued to be active within the community. “I continue to work actively in various campaigns including the

last election, I work for a very active member of parliament and I continue to be involved with various community groups,” Ms Suleyman said. “I’m just very proud and humbled to be the candidate of the Labor party and I’m looking forward to the challenge and advocating for the issues that matter to the people.” If elected the three-time Brimbank mayor will also be the first Australian of Turkish Cypriot background to be in parliament which she said would be a great honour.

THE Brimbank Youth Services has launched their 2014 January Teenage Holiday Program with plenty of activities suited for young people aged between 12 and 17 years. The two-week activity program for secondary school students will kick start this week with a Learn to Surf session and a Movies and Sunshine Leisure Centre visit. Week two will include a trip to Luna Park and bike riding in the city. Brimbank City Council offers the program to all young people who live, work or study in the municipality. Aged care not for young By YASEMIN TALAT A NATIONAL awareness campaign is turning the key on young care issues in Australia and unlocking a more positive future for young Australians. There are 7500 young Australians who currently live in aged care facilities because there is nowhere for them to go. And of those 1820 live in Victoria. Derrimut resident Cindy Turkovic is mother and primary care taker of her 19-year-old son Morgan who has cerebral palsy. Ms Turkovic said she constantly worried that if something were to ever happen to her, Morgan would have no choice but to live in aged care. “It’s about the future, it’s a daily worry about if something happened to you where will your young adult go?” Ms Turkovic said. “That’s the biggest worry.” Morgan, who celebrated his 19th birthday recently with family and friends, is a sports fanatic who is very social and loves spending time with people. He especially loves AFL and follows the local football team where he is known as the club’s “number one supporter”. “He likes anything social, anything where he can have a yak to someone,” Ms Turkovic said. Ms Turkovic said aged care was not the place for her young son. “Young adults need to be

HILLSIDE VCE graduate Victor Lin is sitting on top of the world, or at least on top of the ATAR score ladder, after achieving the perfect score of 99.95 per cent. Victor is one of five students from Melbourne Grammar School to achieve the highest possible ATAR score, putting him in the top one per cent in the nation for achieving a score of 99 or above. “I forced myself to be really organised throughout the year and to complete my homework a few days in advance so I was on top of things,” Victor said. The modest 18-year-old

said he worked hard and studied consistently throughout the year. “I didn’t really get bogged down with scores and stuff, I wanted to make the most of the resources I had at Melbourne Grammar and basically do as well as I can,” he said. Victor finished Year 12 Chinese when he was in Year 10, and finished Math Methods when he was in Year 11. He then went on to complete English, Literature, Latin, Specialist Maths, Chemistry and his favourite subject of all - Philosophy, last year. He advised future VCE students to stay organised and to

Caught in traffic blitz By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO POLICE have already detected almost 500 traffic offences across Melton this summer as part of a two-month blitz of Victoria’s roads. The Summer Stay road enforcement campaign was launched on 15 November 2013 and ended last Monday week. Statistics revealed Melton police nabbed 15 disqualified drivers and 18 unlicensed drivers during the road blitz. Twenty-seven people were detected travelling 25 km over the speed limited with a whopping 139 caught travelling at 10 to 25km an hour over the limit. There were 19 seatbelt offences, 10 mobile offences and 49 unregistered vehicles were detected. A staggering 62,630 motorists were breath tested. Across the state, more than 79,000 traffic offences were detected. Tragically five people lost their lives on Victoria’s roads during the Christmas road toll period, which ran from 23 December to 3 January - five less than during the same period last year. Road Policing Command Superintendent Neville Taylor said it was disappointing that some people continued to take unacceptable risks on the roads and flout the law. “That’s completely unacceptable and it’s incredibly disappointing to

find that there are still people in our community who are taking huge risks on the road, endangering their own lives and the lives of others,” he said. Supt Taylor said speed is a killer and a major factor in about a third of collisions each year. “Low-level speeding can be just as dangerous as high-level speeding and research shows that your risk of being involved in a collision doubles for every 5km an hour over the speed limit you are in a 60km zone. “Speeding reduces the time drivers have to avoid crashes, their ability to control their vehicle and lengthens the time it takes to stop.” Melton Police Inspector Stephen Mutton also warned motorists to take care on the road and said the holiday period was a particularly busy time with more pedestrian traffic. Insp Mutton said another issue that motorists and car owners needed to remain aware of is thefts from motor vehicles. He said thefts continued to be a problem throughout the municipality and urged drivers to secure valuable items and remove them from their vehicle. “We’re still getting a high number of thefts,” Insp Mutton told Star. “People need to secure their items... it’s a big issue for us.”

Sisters gear up for cancer charity drive By YASEMIN TALAT SISTERS Kelli Elbob and Sharon Barkell have come together with a team of friends and family to join forces with hundreds of others at The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers event this March. Ms Elbob, Ms Barkell and their team which includes their niece Chloe Tipitsidis and friends Amanda Thorley and Marita Elliott have already raised over $10,000 for the charity. They have called their team ‘Save the Sisterhood’, and they want to do just that by raising money and awareness of women’s cancers. “I thought it would a good challenge

and a time to reflect,” Ms Elbob said. “And you feel like you’re doing your bit.” Ms Elbob said hearing about young mothers, like herself, affected by cancer tugged at her heart strings and inspired her to take action. “They’re the ones that target my heart the most, I guess, and I know a couple who have passed and left young children behind,” she said. The two-day event benefiting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre will involve the women taking part in a 60km walk in memory of lives lost to breast or gynaecologic cancer and to celebrate the lives saved.

Between them they have had a dinner party, chocolate drives, raffles and sausage sizzles among other things to successfully raise money. “My niece who is only 17, she’s the one I really take my hat off to because she raised $900 on her own just doing events at her school like selling fairy floss at lunchtime and making friendship bands and selling them,” Ms Elbob said. As well as the dedication of fundraising, the challenge continues as the team practise walking long distances including a 20km walk they did in three hours last weekend. Give gift of re-gifting By YASEMIN TALAT AS the season of giving wraps up, the Red Cross has encouraged the community to re-wrap unwanted Christmas gifts and donate them to a Red Cross shop. National Retail Marketing manager for Red Cross, JayneAnne Power, said re-gifting unwanted presents to the Red Cross was a good way to recycle the gifts that might otherwise be thrown away or forgotten. “Most of us know only too well that not all our gifts will

have hit the mark this year,” Ms Power said. “And research shows us that each Christmas Australians spend over $1 billion on unwanted gifts,” she said. “Instead of throwing unusable presents into the rubbish and adding to our landfill problem, why not re-gift them to any one of our Red Cross shops?” Ms Power said Red Cross retail shops were desperately looking for donations of unwanted clothing, home wares, toys and bric-a-brac to provide good quality stock for the New Year.

Stores cannot however accept donation of electrical items and large furniture or mattresses. “The proceeds from all shops go towards helping improve the lives of vulnerable people all around Australia and overseas,” she said. Crackdown on pool fence failure By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MELTON City Council is taking a stand against residents who do not adequately secure their swimming pools. Star can reveal that in the last six months the council has issued 10 emergency orders for noncomplying pools. The data comes in the wake of Life Saving Victoria’s 2012/13 Drowning Report which was released late last year. The report revealed that there were 130 drowning incidents in Victoria between July 2012 and June 2013, including 41 fatal and 89 non-fatal drowning incidents, representing the highest drowning toll since 2004/05. There was an increase of four deaths compared to 2011/12. The statistics showed that for every drowning death there were another three non-fatal drowning incidents. Mayor Bob Turner said while the summer months meant warm weather, swimming and fun, it was also a time to remind residents that unfenced or poorly fenced swimming pools could quickly take the fun out of any holiday period. “Every year there are tragedies, usually involving children, that result from backyard swimming pools not being properly fenced,” Cr Turner said. “Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. I hope residents can have a fun and restful summer season by keeping their children safe through adequate pool fencing and keeping a watchful eye.” He urged residents to check the safety fencing around their pool, and make sure it is fenced appropriately, is secure and doesn’t require maintenance. He said both above-ground and in-ground pools needed to have fencing. Cr Turner added that vigilant supervision around swimming areas would also help keep children safe and having fun over the summer season. And reminders aren’t the only deterrent with offenders facing fines of up to $7200 if the fencing around their pool or spa does not comply with regulations.

Stoush over cat bond By XAVIER SMERDON A HOPPERS Crossing woman may have to give up on her dream of opening up a cat boarding business in Caroline Springs that could save countless abandoned cats all because of a landlord’s demands. Ebony Centazzo has been running Cat Napping Suburban Retreat for over a year in Hoppers Crossing, where her business became the first ever cats only boarding kennel in the municipality, and she regularly

has clients travel from as far away as St Kilda and all over the western suburbs. This year she was hoping to expand the business and open a second kennel in Caroline Springs, but this time she wanted to give back to the community. Teaming up with Forever Friends Animal Rescue, Ms Centazzo had planned to help abandoned cats and kittens find homes. According to recent figures, almost 1000 stray cats are caught and

destroyed every year in Wyndham alone. But Ms Centazzo’s dream may have to be placed on the backburner after the landlord of the only suitable warehouse in Caroline Springs demanded a $20,000 bond upfront, which they would keep for several years. She has now laid the future of her dream in the hands of crowd funding website indiegogo, where she is asking for people to donate money to help her pay the bond.

“The only reason I have turned to crowd funding is because it is such a small amount, investors wouldn’t be interested. Mackellar Primary School students Chris, Robert, Emily and Riona had fun with their new vaulting horse, tumbling and high jump mats, balance beams and a mini trampoline. Growing stories on web THE stories of the families who have dedicated many years to growing quality and fresh produce in Keilor have been told through a new exhibition in Brimbank. To celebrate and reflect the rich history of farming in the Keilor area since the 1850s, the Brimbank City Council, with the support of Federal Department of Environment and Heritage, has produced ‘Growing Stories’. ‘Growing stories’ tells the story of these families in a booklet, photographic exhibition and short film. The families tell stories of their passion for growing, their

dedication and how business changed over the years for the good and bad. One story is that of the Koroneos family. Chris Koroneos, now aged 76, settled in Keilor in 1949 after migrating from Northern Greece. At the age of 12, he started working the fields with his father and continued to grow vegetables and kept livestock until he retired from farming in 2002. “I worked on the land with my brother and father,” Mr Koroneos said. “In the early days, we were growing up to 70,000 plants a year,” he said. The array of fresh vegies grown over the 64 years includ-

ed cauliflowers, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, pumpkins and tomatoes. “It was very hard work those days, it was all by hand years ago, no tractors or forklifts,” Mr Koroneos said. These days Mr Koroneos only grows vegies for his family and visits the farm for maintenance. ‘Growing Stories’ has been produced as a legacy of the Keilor 150 celebrations and a limited number of free copies of the booklet are now available from all Brimbank libraries. The accompanying short film can be viewed via Council’s Facebook page, YouTube or on loan from Brimbank libraries.

WHEN Werribee teenager Jordyn Hare passed away last year, it was the worst time of his father Jason’s life. “The fact that he passed away unexpectedly hit me really hard,” Mr Hare said. But almost one year later to the day, Mr Hare is hoping to use his son’s short life as a source of inspiration to others. Jordyn was just 18-years-old when he passed away following an epileptic fit. Next month his family and friends will gather to pay tribute

to him while also raising money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria. The event, Remembering Jordyn, will be a showcase of the entertainment industry, which Jordyn was starting to break into before his death. Mr Hare said one of the most difficult things about his son’s passing was telling his two other young children. “We all had moments of weakness in 2013 but now we are trying to make 2014 a more positive year,” he said. “Life is short and epilepsy

is one of those afflictions that strikes randomly and all too often very tragically. “You can either crumple yourself on the floor and disappear or soldier on.” The Burnside father said since he started planning the event in July last year there had already been a more positive feeling amongst his family and friends. Think Ahead is a major new long-term exhibition which looks at the possibilities for life in the future through innovations in science, technology, engineering and design. Scienceworks manager Dr Nurin Veis says Think Ahead is targeted at eight to 12-year-olds and is technologically advanced and thought-provoking. Developed by Museum Victoria, Think Ahead encourages visitors to think about the future and their involvement in it through topics including medicine and health, cities, the environment, space, music and communication. The exhibition includes the opportunity for visitors to re-

design their bodies using cybernetics, design their own 3D future city with vertical gardens and flying car factories, step inside an immersive space craft experience and influence emotions of others through creating different soundscapes. The exhibition features world-class innovations from Melbourne, including the cochlear implant and bionic eye prototype and the two-wheeled electric Holden EN-V, a concept car of the future that can drive its passengers safely to their destination. Robots are a special feature of the exhibition. On public display in Australia for the first time will be two Nao (pronounced “now”) robots - advanced humanoids that will walk, talk, remember faces, dance and play games with visi-

tors, and the Da Vinci Surgical Robot that has been used in more than 200,000 surgeries. Few rules for fitness GIVING up dieting in 2014 could be just the ticket to achieving your weight loss goals this year. Being hyper vigilant about what you eat and constantly worrying whether you’ve exceeded your calorie intake for the day gets exhausting and isn’t sustainable in the long term. obstacle course event or doing a local fun run, have a fitness goal to work towards to keep you motivated. Don’t eat when you’re stressed or angry. After a stressful day, sometimes the only thing that will make you feel better is a nice family block of Dairy Milk and some trashy reality TV. Unfortunately, ploughing into a bar of chocolate to deal with stress will only make things worse. Be aware of your mood when you’re eating and try to eat when you’re calm. Aim to cook more at home this year. Nutritionist Lisa Guy says to “write a list of the meals you are going to make for the week so you are organised with the ingredients.” To make it fun, pick one new recipe to try each week, so you

don’t fall into a food rut. If you’re just starting out, exercising three times a week is fine. Ideally you should be aiming for a minimum of four days of training a week to get the most out of exercise. Schedule 45 minutes of training into your day even if you have to go to bed earlier and wake up a littler earlier. Use social media as a motivational tool. You might think it’s cheesy, but don’t be afraid to go to town with inspirational quotes and pictures. To make it even easier, follow inspirational fitness and health accounts on Instagram. Every time you check your phone, you’ll quickly be met with a barrage of images of healthy meals, toned bodies and inspirational quotes to remind you what you’re aiming for.

The much anticipated Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Wolf of Wall Street also hits the big screen this month. It tells the story of a New York stockbroker who refuses to co-operate

By LIAM TWOMEY A SEVEN-wicket haul from gun quick Jake Haberfield has put Footscray Edgewater in the box seat of its Premier Cricket clash with Melbourne Uni. In the first match back from the Christmas break, Haberfield picked up exactly where he left off in the first half of the season, removing opening batsman Thomas Polkinghorne for a duck. That was only the beginning of the pain for the batting side though as the former South Australian proved a constant headache throughout the innings. Haberfield’s figures of 7/67 take his season tally to 34 at an average of just 14.15. The constant flow of wickets restricted Melbourne Uni to 227 from 72.4 overs. Mark Simpson was the pick of the batsmen with 61 while Daniel Hutton also made 38. For Footscray, the remaining wickets were taken by Hamish Winter-Irving (2/35) and Michael Kelly (1/33). Footscray captain Dean Russ was full of praise for Haberfield. “The big thing that surprises me the most about Jake is his ability to bowl long spells and maintain his pace,” he said. In his opening spell he bowled 12 overs on the trot and bowled 23 overs for the day which is just an outstanding effort. It just shows his quality as a bowler. “I would have thought 250 to 270 is probably par at that ground. The deck was quite tacky and offered us a bit early. Having them 4/50 we wanted to strive to contain them to under 200. At the end of the day, rolling them for 227, you would take that.” With 14 overs left in the day’s play, Russ and Anthony Barton padded up for the Bulldogs and raced to an impressive start. The pair added 52 for the first wicket before Barton was removed by Fawad Ahmed for 23. Footscray will resume its innings this week at 1/56, needing a further 172 to claim victory. Russ said batting in partnerships and the battle with Ahmed would be the key to chasing down the remaining runs this week. “I think if we can starve him (Ahmed) from wickets, that is probably the biggest one,” Russ said. “He is a very good bowler. If we can stop him from getting wickets as much as possible and score at the other end, that will be a key. “The biggest thing is just partnerships. If one bloke in the top five can go on and get a 70 or an 80 at least, that should be enough to see us through.”

Tough ask for United FOOTSCRAY United went into Saturday’s North Division Turf Cricket clash with PEGS as a heavy underdog, and by game’s end the inevitable eventuated. It was a one-day clash that pitted top versus bottom, with United choosing to send PEGS in to bat first at Scovell Reserve. For a while that decision by United skipper Damian Grainger looked a winner, as Keilor Park-based PEGS faltered through the early portions of its innings and was in some trouble at 3/23 before Srinand Yalamanchili (57) and Adam Dudderidge (49) combined for 110 to restore balance in PEGS’s favour. An unbeaten 41 from Suranjith Silva late in the piece ensured PEGS a strong finish, setting Footscray United a formidable 214 for victory with three wickets in hand after 40 overs. Despite a solid 49 from Dadimuni Geeth Silva, United could only last 30 overs before losing all 10 wickets, making only 102 in the process. SUNSHINE United knocked off Point Cook in a top-of-the-table clash at Saltwater Reserve in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 competition on Saturday. After being sent in on the road, United posted a healthy 8/167 in its 40over dig. In response Point Cook was poor, faltering to a measly all-out 91 from just 30 overs. Chris Kavanagh was the only Point Cook batsman to hit double figures, making 38 before getting bowled. In other results from the division, Newport-Digman was far too good for Deer Park Ardeer at John McLeod Reserve on Saturday. After being sent in, Newport Digman posted a very healthy 5/202, before restricting Deer Park Ardeer to 113 in 36.2 overs. Meanwhile, Sunshine Heights remains in the top four after easily getting past Wyndham Vale at Ainsworth Reserve. Heights could only reach 160 in the first innings, but managed to restrict Wyndham Vale to 72, bowling them out in 25.4 overs.

SUNSHINE claimed a nailbiting victory against Western Suburbs rival Yarraville in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association on Saturday. With both teams needing a win to kick off the New Year, Yarraville made first use with the bat and posted a tough score of 7/178 at the end of its 45 overs. Matthew Love was the best of the Eagles’ batsmen with a classy 76 before he was caught by Sunshine coach Mark Brown

off the bowling of Kane Twentyman. Troy Stone was the pick of the Crows’ bowlers taking 3/30 from his eight overs. In reply, Sunshine made a horror start to the run chase to be 2/8. However, the Crows were able to regroup thanks to a brilliant middle order partnership from Fayaz Ughradar (49) and Laka Ullah Khan (42). The pair came together with the score at 4/55 and added a vital 67.

The partnership was just the boost the Crows needed as they went on to reach the target in the last over of the day for the loss of just six wickets. The victory is Sunshine’s third of the VSDCA season and lifts the Crows into 10th spot on the ladder. Yarraville remains one spot further back in 11th with just the two wins for the season. When round nine begins this weekend, Sunshine will take on Noble Park while Yarraville will meet Box Hill.

GRAND United has finally succumbed - its first loss of the summer - going down to West Newport in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf competition on Saturday. Choosing to bat first at West Newport’s Loft Reserve, Grand United recovered from a dicey start to reach 7/186 in the one-day clash. At 2/2 the visitors were in serious trouble, but a very solid showing from the middle order ensured Grand United a respectable final total. West Newport then made much better use of the wicket, with opener Ross Cassidy setting the tone from start to finish, scoring an unbeaten 63. With the support of skipper Trent Jones (50) batting at number four, West Newport reached its target in 35 overs, ending the game at 4/187. Other winners in the A Turf competition on Saturday were Williamstown Imperials, Williamstown Colts, Melton Centrals and Bellbridge. FOLLOWING the appointment of senior interleague head coach Brett Jacobs the Western Region Football League has announced two new members to join the coaching committee, with league great Steve Thom appointed as chairman of selectors and Altona Vikings reserves coach Aaron Freeland as assistant coach. With nearly 60 years of experience in the WRFL between the three men, the league is in good hands when it comes up against the Southern Football League in the 2014 AFL Victoria Metro Championships held on March 29 at Visy Park. With over 1500 senior players registered in the WRFL in 2013, the selection process for the final representative squad will not be an easy task. “Obviously there are a lot of great players in the league, but what we’re looking for are players who are 100 per cent committed to the team and who share the belief that it is a privilege to wear the WRFL jumper and represent football in the West,” Thom said.

In the Bear lair By ADEM SARICAOGLU BURNSIDE Heights is now less than three months away from making its senior debut in the Essendon District Football League. The Bears have been impressive since indicating their intention to enter the league’s senior ranks in the middle of last year, gaining formal approval shortly after the season’s climax. With senior coach Shane Rayment and club president Justin Peagram at the helm, the EDFL’s newest club has surprised everyone with its successful off-season. While it’s much too early to judge just how Burnside Heights will go in Division Two, the signs, so far at least, are looking very good. “I think there are 29 that have officially signed and we’ve got a commitment from another 25 to 30 players that we’ll look to tie up once pre-season kicks off,” Rayment told Star. Rayment then said he still expects that number to increase even more in coming months. “The issue of signing guys won’t be a problem, but from a recruiting point of view we’ve still got young guys that are still contacting us and other players that are contacting us,” he explained. “But we’re just happy to sign anybody that wants to play a game of footy and that shows a little bit of commitment to what we’re doing.” Burnside Heights will host East Sunbury in round one during the first weekend of April and will most likely go into the clash as favourite against the club that couldn’t score a win in its inaugural season last year. While Rayment believes the “bigger and better sides” will be too good for the Bears in 2014, he hopes to be able to string a couple of wins together throughout the year. However the Bears are aware instant success is not a necessity for a fledging club, and for now Rayment and his team hopes to build a strong, enjoyable culture for their growing playing group. “It’s just a really positive energy around the place and everybody that’s involved with the club at this point in time is working really hard and diligently,” Rayment said. “It’s probably the first time in a while I’m really enjoying what’s happening within the inner sanctum of a footy club, which is fantastic.” An announcement on inaugural club captains will be made closer to the start of the new season.

Keilor breaks the ice By ADEM SARICAOGLU KEILOR finally scored its first win of the summer in Senior Division Turf Cricket with a 31-run one-day victory over Brighton District on Saturday. The Blues were sent in to bat at Robert Bruce Reserve and managed to reach 9/182 after a shaky start to their 40-over dig. In response, the visitors were bowled out for 151 with two overs to spare. Keilor coach Mick Andreadis said his side was “long overdue” for a win on Saturday, admitting a slight weight had been lifted off his team’s shoulders after struggling through a

winless stretch of six games to start the season. “There probably was a little bit of a sense of relief but we knew (a win) was coming,” Andreadis said. “We didn’t think it was that far away and most importantly, now we’ve got to make sure we back it up with a strong performance next week.” The Blues were in early trouble at 2/2, but a solid knock from Warren Kelly (64) that was well supported by Lachlan Sneddon (54) helped save the innings. The pair combined for 92 for the sixth wicket before Keilor’s tail tacked on another 19 runs. Then with the ball, Matt Will-

mott was the pick of the bowlers on his way to claiming three Brighton District wickets, while skipper Jody Hutchinson and Mubasher Hassan each snared two of their own during the doomed run chase. Andreadis, who believes Keilor’s one-day form has been OK, praised his batsmen for setting up the win during the first half the game. “We’ve actually been playing the one-dayers pretty well, we just haven’t had the experience or the polish toward the end,” Andreadis said. “It was a good display by the batsmen to give us a score we knew we could defend and the bowlers did their job.”

Keilor remains last on the table but will not have to face any of the current top four in its remaining fixtures for the summer. While Andreadis has been pleased to see the continued development and improvement of future prospects Daniel Venables, Luke Delbridge, Jarryd Clements and Sneddon, he is also quite mindful avoiding relegation is going to be a main priority for the rest of the summer. “We’re in a catch-22 where we want to win but we also want to develop,” he said. “So ideally, to avoid relegation would be great in developing the young boys.”

FORMER Dandenong Thunder manager Toby Paterson will take charge of the St Albans Saints in State League football this season. Paterson, alongside newly appointed assistant Steve Laurie, will coach the former Victorian Premier League club that struggled under Micky Colina, who was sacked as coach last August. “It’s a big club, St Albans, and it’s a new, fresh and exciting challenge,” Paterson said. “(I’m) looking forward to the new challenge at Dinamo. “The people of the club have done a fantastic job in getting the facilities to where they are, which is a major factor in attracting players to the club.” The Saints will likely not be entering the new National Premier League currently being rolled out in Victoria, opting instead to remain a State League club for the time being. But while Dinamo may not be

taking part in the state’s newly formed top flight competition, Paterson and his Saints will be keen for on-field success in 2014. “I‘ll be hoping for a top four or five finish, that’s the minimum we’ll be going for,” Paterson told Star. “Obviously I need to look at the current squad we have along with the additions into it, which I’ll find out more about into the pre-season, but for now it’s to finish as high as we can up on the ladder. “The club has certainly not put any pressure on me directly, saying that we have to win the championship. What they’ve said is that the aim is to get us as high up the league as possible and that will be my aim.” With official pre-season training starting last week, Paterson and his staff will now be using much of the summer period piecing together their squad. Though Paterson hopes to maintain some experience, he expects the majority of the final squad to be filled with a promising crop of young talent.

re-shuffling.” Meanwhile former Melbourne Victory midfielder Tom Pondeljak hopes to make an on-field comeback for Dinamo this year after injury forced him to the sideline in 2013.

It pays to promote HAPPY New Year. 2014 has come along very quickly and there is a lot on the sporting calendar for this year that excites me and I am sure it excites you. Cricket is heading towards the finals and Werribee Cricket Club is going well and is the only local club who has kept me informed of its progress so far this season. While I don’t want to start the year on a downer, I have to ask the question: What is wrong with other clubs in the area? You are doing a fine job of NOT promoting your sport and your club, please take a bow. Don’t whinge to me or ask me for publicity for an event in the future if that is your attitude. It only takes an email to remedy the situation. Make it happen. I AM excited, as are a lot of people in local footy circles, by the fact that a WRFL senior interleague side will be representing the West for the first time in over a decade at the Victorian Metro Championships on 29 March at Visy Park. The league has named a preliminary squad of 70 players from both Division One and Two players. One player who was not named was Shannon Broadbent of Deer Park. Social media went to town on Shannon and as is usually the case they got it wrong. The league thought Shannon was not going to play in the WRFL in 2014 so they did not include him in the squad. When they discovered that that information was incorrect they contacted him and he immediately committed to the squad. So the detractors on Big Footy and other social media can back off. My understanding is that Shannon is looking forward to the game and representing the WRFL. I AM intrigued to know if local pubs and clubs have experienced a lift in the interest and involvement in darts in the last few weeks on the back of the International Darts Competition held at Etihad Stadium last weekend. The Wizard of Oz, Simon Whitlock (a Bulldogs supporter) was in town and the stadium hosted about 8000 fans nightly to witness the competition. I am intrigued to know if you think it is a legitimate sport or just a pastime and whether you would go to an event in the future more than once. I wonder if this is a novelty event? I AM really enjoying doing the SEN Cricket Show “Howzat” with Rodney Hogg, Smokey Dawson and Adam Dale. It has given me the chance to talk to some of my cricketing idols like Doug Walters, David Boon and Greg Chappell. We are on for a few weeks more so tune in Saturdays at 11am. Footy is not far away with the Bulldogs Family Day coming up on Sunday 9 February at Whitten Oval from 9.30am. WERRIBEE Cricket Club has started 2014 off in great fashion and are on track for a very successful year. The first X1 scored a comfortable win in the first game of the new year, with the Dean brothers starring with the bat. The best news for the club is that all four senior sides are in the top four and bound for finals. The club is holding its Pink Stumps Day for the McGrath Foundation on 22 February and will be hosting a Ladies High Tea on the day from 2pm to 5pm. DEER Park Bowls Club president Ray Franksen couldn’t have been happier with his troops going into the Christmas break. The club has two teams on top of the Bowls Victoria Pennant Competition ladder (section one and section five) while two other teams (section six and section seven) are also locked inside the top four. To highlight its dominance, Deer Park has won 26 matches for the year and lost just 12 across its top four teams. “We were all very happy with the first part of the season,” Franksen said. “The hardest part now is trying to fit those players into the sides and keep them as active as what they are. We have an abundance of really strong players. “These are quality players too. It is going to be a very difficult job for the selectors to get the sides sorted out.” After the dominating start to the season, all that remains for one of the West’s fastest growing bowls clubs is to finish off the hard work in finals. While the majority of pennant sides focus on the results of their top side at the business end of the season, Deer Park is concentrating on its lower grades with the club hoping to bridge the gap between division one (top side) and division five (second side). “We have worked hard to get where we are,” Franksen said. “We really need our division five, six and seven sides to get up now. If our division one side doesn’t win a premiership, it’s not the end of the world. We have plenty of time to get into Premier League. “We really need three or four years in division one before we tackle Premier League. There is nothing worse than going up and then going straight back down. We have worked hard to get where we are, and we don’t want to waste those opportunities.” Deer Park will resume its season this weekend against eighth-placed MCC. The club will also be hosting an Open Fours Tournament in late March. Anyone seeking more information is encouraged to contact the club.
