By CHARLENE MACAULAY POP-UP parks are popping up across the municipality. Yarraville’s pop-up park has returned for the third consecutive summer after traders agreed to foot the bill for this year’s installation. A committee of Yarraville businesses, led by Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith, has resurrected the pop-up park and will also deliver a Summer Sun Days program that is set to include live music, book readings, yoga and other family friendly activities. Meanwhile, Maribyrnong City Council has rolled out a series of parklets along Barkly Village.
Easy needle access By CHARLENE MACAULAY NEEDLE vending machines could be coming to Footscray and Braybrook this year as part of a trial to reduce infection rates among intravenous drug users. The Yarra Drug and Health Forum has earmarked the two suburbs, as well as North Richmond and St Kilda, as the first sites for the needle vending machines. The unmarked machines would be used as an extension of existing needle exchange programs and include clean equipment and disposal bins. Yarra Drug and Health Fo-
rum CEO Greg Denham said the machines - which had been used across New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia for the past 20 years - would not be easily accessible by members of the general public. Under the initiative, drug users will have to collect a token from a needle exchange program to use the needle vending machine. “We still have a significant gap after hours of access to needles and syringes,” Mr Denham said. “We often find that after hours, there are a lot of professionals that inject drugs and don’t want to go to needle and
syringe programs, and pharmacies charge for needles. “Often they go back to sharing their equipment, which, we know, is really unsafe. “They’re an unobtrusive device, which is normally either attached to, or part of, a wall and located near a needle syringe centre of community health centre.” Mr Denham wants to see at least one of the needle vending machines brought to Victoria in the next few months. Dr John Sherman, who offers drug substitution programs at Footscray’s Open Family, said only about two or three per
cent of intravenous drug users had contracted HIV, while up to 75 per cent of intravenous heroin users had Hepatitis C. “We’re never going to stop drug use, but we can reduce harm, and the biggest harm, of course, is from overdose, but coming close is blood-borne viruses such as Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B and HIV,” Dr Sherman said. “Anything that can reduce the rate of those infections, I would be most supportive of. “Some article mentioned that (needle vending machines) would encourage drug use well, I can’t see that happening.”
Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the council tentatively supported the needle vending machines. “It’s important to note that you have to find the right property to put these vending machines on, which is more than likely the provider of the (needle) exchange program ... they can’t just put them anywhere,” Cr Miles said. Cr Miles said the initiative could save health services valuable time and money, with every dollar spent towards preventing the spread of needleborne diseases equalling an $8 return for the taxpayer.

WESTERN Health will share in a $15 million State Government grant to boost elective surgeries across its three hospitals. Western Health, which manages the Sunshine, Williamstown and Western Hospitals, has received a $275,000 grant to perform an additional 120 nose and throat operations. These will predominantly be undertaken at Sunshine Hospital and are expected to cut waiting list times for children. Western Health also received a $338,000 grant in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Services, which will provide 100 patients on the Western Health elective surgery waiting list with the opportunity to have their surgery at an earlier time at Bacchus Marsh Hospital. The types of surgery to be performed in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Service include orthopaedic, general, gynaecology and ear, nose and throat surgery. Figures from the Victorian Health Services Performance Report reveal that Western Hospital’s elective surgery list has almost doubled in the past year, with more than 2000 patients waiting for a variety of operations. At Sunshine Hospital, the elective surgery waiting list has jumped from 1425 in the June 2012 quarter to 2130 in the June 2013 quarter, while the list dropped by more than 200 patients at Williamstown Hospital over the past year, with 402 patients waiting for elective surgery. “Western Health is extremely pleased to have received two additional funding packages for elective surgery to treat patients between January and June 2014,” Western Health’s acting executive director of operations Claire Culley said. “Western Health continues to experience increased demand for elective surgery due to the rapid growth in the number of people living in its catchment area,” she said. “The additional funding streams provide an opportunity for a greater number of patients to be treated across the health service.”
INCUMBENT Footscray MP Marsha Thomson will chase a third term in office after gaining Labor Party preselection. Ms Thomson, who has normally run unopposed as a Labor Party candidate, went up against former Maribyrnong Mayor Sel Sanli for preselection at the end of 2013. Mr Sanli was first elected to the council in the 2007 Stony Creek by-election, and he was voted in as mayor in 2010 before unsuccessfully running for a third term in 2012’s council elections. Under party rules, preselection of candidates is determined by a 50-50 split between the vote of local branch members and Labor’s 100-member public office selection committee. According to reports, Mr Sanli won a majority of the local vote but still did not defeat Ms Thomson. “It ended up being a pretty good outcome, and I was happy with it,” Ms Thomson said. “It’s going to be a very busy year. We’ve got a lot to do, and we’ve got to concentrate (on the election).” The seat of Footscray, which has been a safe Labor seat since 1927, has undergone boundary changes, with the suburbs of Kingsville, Seddon and Yarraville out, and North Sunshine and West Sunshine now part of the electorate. “It is a very significant change,” Ms Thomson said. “I’ve got to spend some time

Easy port choice THE State Government has appointed a new head of the Port of Melbourne Corporation. Nick Easy will become the new CEO in March to replace outgoing CEO Stephen Bradford, who recently retired after 10 years in the hot seat. Mr Bradford guided the Port of Melbourne through the Channel Deepening Project and has overseen unprecedented trade growth at the Port of Melbourne. Ports Minister David Hodgett said Mr Easy had previously worked at the Port of Melbourne in a number of senior executive positions. “He will step into his new role at a critical time for the port in its growth,” Mr Hodgett said. “With the $1.6 billion Port Capacity Project underway, Mr Easy takes on the position at a time when the Victorian Coalition Government is committed to increasing the capacity of our container trade, and cementing Victoria’s position as the freight and logistics capital of Australia.” As well as previously working for the corporation in senior management, Mr Easy has also worked in local government for a decade, and most recently as CEO of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. He has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Planning) degree and a Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management. Caryn Anderson has been appointed as Interim CEO.

Salmonella outbreak By CHARLENE MACAULAY A POPULAR Footscray restaurant was shut down last week after an outbreak of salmonella. The Hao Phong restaurant in Hopkins St was shut down by health authorities on Tuesday after two customers were taken to hospital with suspected salmonella poisoning. A further 18 unconfirmed cases emerged following the Vietnamese restaurant’s closure, including two
heavily pregnant women. Three of the ill diners presented at hospital and all were released last week. The diners had all eaten at Hao Phong between 27 and 31 December. Food cooked at the restaurant has been taken away for testing and Hao Phong closed its doors last week for further inspection and clean-up. Meanwhile, all utentils that have come into contact with contaminat-
ed food have been destroyed. Graeme Walker from the Department of Health told Star last week that authorities were still unsure what dish or ingredient caused the salmonella outbreak. The restaurant is expected to reopen this week. A sign on the door of the last week restaurant said Hao Phong was “temporary (sic) closed ... due to the exhausted fan and store are out of order”.
Salmonella poisoning is a form of gastroenteritis caused by the salmonella bacteria. Beef, poultry, milk, and eggs are most often infected with salmonella. But vegetables may also be contaminated. Poor food handling and hygiene can easily spread the salmonella bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, headache, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and dehydration.
Mobile blitz fines soar MORE than 720 City of Maribyrnong drivers have been caught using their mobile phones while behind the wheel. Victoria Police statistics reveal that 721 drivers in the municipality were fined across the 2011-12 and 2012-13 financial years for using a hand-held mobile while driving. A further five learner drivers or P-platers were caught using any kind of mobile phone device. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said using mobile phones behind the wheel was a big distraction for drivers. “The recent increase in the penalty for the use of a mobile phone while driving is reflective of the danger this creates,” Mr Hill said. “But this is not just about the use of mobile phones, this is about all driver distractions. “Driving is a complex task and requires full concentration. Any distraction can impair a driver’s reaction time, ability to maintain speed and position on the road and general awareness of other road users. “Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds when driving at 40km/h means you are effectively travelling blind for 22 metres.” Meanwhile, Victoria Police is calling on drivers to make safety on our roads their New Year’s resolution. Five people died on Victoria’s roads over the official holiday season, including a 32-year-old Maribyrnong motorcyclist whose bike collided with a car, and a St Albans man that died in hospital on New Year’s Eve following a single vehicle crash.
Baby Show TARNEIT Tamara Watt, Clive Bracey, Merryn Trevethan and Heather from Fordham Reserve’s Artdoor Gallery share the Bit Strip exhibition. 112561
Art stands tall in reserve street gallery By CHARLENE MACAULAY FOOTSCRAY’S Fordham Reserve has undergone a makeover with its fourth and final outdoor exhibition. Fordham Reserve’s Artdoor Gallery shows off Footscray through the eyes of locals in Bit Strip, where a collection of local artists has shared snippets of their daily lives. “You can walk past a series of picture frames in the park and see how seven artists have responded to their bit of Footscray,” says curator Tamara Watt. “With a mixture of photography, drawing, paintings, collage and 3D works, this eclectic
narrative takes you on a journey through streets, lifestyles and viewpoints.” Clive Bracey, who has four photographs in the exhibition, said: “I’ve worked in Footscray for 10 years and I am still amazed and surprised at the intriguing images it presents to my camera.” By popular demand, two of Sharon Lam’s works have remained on exhibit from the last show. The Fordham Reserve Artdoor Gallery was created at the end of 2012 to encourage community art while Regional Rail Link works are carried out in the area between Hopkins St and the Maribyrnong River. The Artdoor Gallery consists of picture frames made from recycled materials attached to over 150
metres of two-metre high plywood hoardings. Art works are printed as posters and glued to the wall. Ms Watt said the Fordham Reserve Artdoor Gallery had been a big success. “A large outdoor space like this can be a challenge to keep free of offensive tagging and graffiti, but we’ve managed pretty well,” she said. “Most taggers have respected the artworks - something that urban planners might like to note.” Ms Watt said the project proved that art was a good solution to ugly graffiti on walls. The Bit Strip exhibition will remain until the park is relinquished by Regional Rail Link and reinstated.

Pool safety call out By CHARLENE MACAULAY MARIBYRNONG City Council is calling on pool owners to comply with safety requirements as the warm weather starts to pick up. The council has inspected 20 backyard swimming pools across the municipality in the past six months and has issued notices to comply for those who fail to meet pool fence requirements. One person was fined $280 after failing to act in response to the notice and has since complied with regulations. There are around 200 privately owned swimming pools within the municipality. Home owners installing a
new swimming pool and spa are required to have a safety barrier for all swimming pools and spas with a depth greater than 30cm. The safety barriers are required for in-ground swimming pools, jacuzzis, indoor swimming pools, above-ground swimming pools and spas. According to the Victorian Building Authority, pool fencing and safety barriers reduce the risk of drowning by around 75 per cent. The council’s Director of Sustainable Development, Nigel Higgins, encouraged pool owners to maintain safety around water and to supervise children at all times. “It is also important to
ensure that no unauthorised amendments to the pool fence barrier are made and that no structures or other objects are placed close to the barrier that could allow a child to climb through or over the barrier,” Mr Higgins said. Meanwhile, Sport and Recreation Minister Hugh Delahunty said it was important for families to be safe in and around the water - whether it was a pool, lake or beach. “Victorians need to pay closer attention to water safety after another increase in people drowning across the state,” Mr Delahunty said. “Every drowning death is a tragedy.”

High achievers rewarded By CHARLENE MACAULAY UP TO 100 new Victoria University students will benefit from a special new scholarship in 2014. For the first time, VU has offered Chancellor’s Scholarships to high achieving students who attained an ATAR over 90 in 2013 and listed VU in their course preference list. The scholarship offers recipients an annual grant of $5000 for the duration of their course, as well as individual mentoring from business leaders, an internship, participation in a leadership program and invitations to university-sponsored events. Students maintain their
place in the Chancellor’s Scholar program as long as they maintain full-time enrolment and achieve an average of 70 per cent throughout the course. St Bernard’s College student Luke Marinelli was one of the lucky ones to receive a scholarship after scoring an ATAR of 93.3 last year. He will start a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences this year in a bid to become an osteopath. VU was his first preference. “Always at the back of my mind, I really wanted to get that scholarship but didn’t know whether or not I would get over 90,” Luke said. “When I was finally offered it, it was big.
“I was interested in sports science and I looked at chiro and physio and found that a related job was osteopathy. “I thought that sounded cool so I read and researched it, and thought it was the path I wanted to take. It’s a five-year course, I hope I can tough it out and get there because it will set me up a lot.” VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins added: “Victoria University is committed to excellence, and rewards and recognises the efforts of high achieving students. “These scholarships complement the Achievement and Access scholarships we offer at the university.”

That’s the message from RACV, with insurance figures revealing an 83 per cent jump in motorcycle claims over 12 months. In 2011, motorcyclists across the municipality made 12 insurance claims. In 2012, the number of claims jumped to 22. The trend has been replicated across the West, with an 89 per cent increase in motorcycle claims from 36 to 68. The RACV paid $5300 on average per motorcycle insurance claim in 2012. RACV general manager of Insurance Paul Northey said the surge in claims was despite a modest 2.6 per cent increase in the number of motorcycles registered on Victorian roads in 2012. “Motorcycle-related incidents are more likely to occur in areas which typically carry large volumes of traffic, such as inner-city Maribyrnong ... or fast growing
Wyndham,” Mr Northey said. “As in previous years, RACV Insurance’s analysis shows motorcyclists are most likely to be involved in a collision between 10am and 6pm. “The RACV data show motorcycle claims during the past year were most commonly reported as the result of a motorcyclist losing control, especially in the wet and on corners, or being hit by another vehicle.” Mr Northey encouraged motorcyclists to be constantly aware of the road and traffic conditions and potential hazards such as blind corners, crests and intersections. “It is also important that all road users be conscious of others around them, particularly when turning, overtaking and changing lanes. “This is especially the case when driving around vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians, where keeping a safe distance is critical.” TAC figures show that of the 282 people killed on Victoria’s roads in 2012, 41 were riders and passengers of motorcycles.
Archie’s Creation comes alive LEGENDARY singer-songwriter Archie Roach will play a free concert during Footscray Community Arts Centre’s Wominjeka Festival this weekend. The grounds of the Footscray Community Arts Centre will come alive when Mr Roach performs from his new retrospective collection Creation. This is Mr Roach’s second appearance at the Wominjeka Festival, first performing with the Black Arm
Band during the 2012 Festival. “It is an absolute honour to have Archie, one of Australia’s most influential songwriters, return to FCAC as part of Wominjeka 2014,” FCAC director Jade Lillie said. The Wominjeka Festival is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture. Mr Roach will perform on the main stage of Riverside Lawn this Saturday at 7pm.
Cash boost for Tweddle’s good health FOOTSCRAY Rotary has given the gift of first aid to a long standing early parenting centre in the West. Rotary gave Tweddle Child and Family Health Service more than $3000 to spend on five St John first aid kits, thermometers, a blood pressure monitor and defibrillation unit. Tweddle’s Footscray Residential Unit supports 32 families every fortnight. The service was opened on 1 June 1920 by Melbourne philanthropist Joseph Tweddle to look after foundling or illegitimate babies who had been abandoned. Over the past nine decades, the focus changed from supporting the baby to supporting the whole family. More than 1300 families a year access Tweddle for breastfeeding and sleep difficulties, post-natal depression and anxiety among parents, and any other difficulties that pop up.

Alarm over deadly dog virus By YASEMIN TALAT PUPPIES in the western suburbs are falling victim to the deadly parvovirus following a spike in cases referred to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in recent months. Sunshine, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee have all been named as hotspots for the infection, which has seen 34 cases admitted in the last three months and five last weekend alone. Head Veterinarian of in-patients at Lort Smith, Dr Andrew Kapsis said it was essential to vaccinate puppies against such deadly viruses and ensure the full course of vaccinations was completed. “This is a serious disease,” Dr Kapsis said. “Without treatment about 95 per cent of infected dogs will die and even with treatment about 30 per cent won’t make it.” Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that is spread through the faeces of infected dogs and can survive in the environment, such as local parks, for many months. “You don’t need to have direct contact between dogs for the virus to spread,” Dr Kapsis said. “It can be transmitted through contact with contaminated faeces in the environment, on contaminated shoes, clothing or other objects, such as balls.” Dr Kapsis said the symptoms of parvovirus would start showing within two to seven days and may include pets losing appetite, becoming lethargic and developing vomiting,

Fun and thrills on the big screen THIS year brings another crop of wacky and wonderful films at the box office. The new releases out this month promise to take viewers on another journey of love, laughter, excitement and drama. Inside Llewyn Davis is a drama directed by brothers Ethan and Joel Coen about a singersongwriter who navigates New York’s folk music scene during the 1960s. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Oscar Isaac, John Goodman and
Garrett Hedlund and boasts a rich soundtrack of folk classics. Inside Llewyn Davis is due to be released on 16 January. Action fans will enjoy Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit for a bit of high octane entertainment. The story is about Jack Ryan, a young covert CIA analyst, who uncovers a Russian plot to crash the US economy with a terrorist attack. Actor Chris Pine plays the lead while Kevin Costner, Kenneth Branagh and Keira Knight-

The much anticipated Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Wolf of Wall Street also hits the big screen this month. It tells the story of a New York stockbroker who refuses to co-operate in a large securities fraud case involving corruption on Wall Street, corporate banking world and mob infiltration. The biopic is out on 23 January.
For some comic relief Grudge Match should set off a few belly laughs with Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro playing a pair of ageing boxing rivals coaxed out of retirement to fight one final bout – 50 years after their last match. The two old dogs will battle for supremacy in cinemas 23 January. Visit www.yourmovies.com. au for more movie releases and trailers.

Deer Park stands out By LIAM TWOMEY DEER Park Bowls Club president Ray Franksen couldn’t have been happier with his troops going into the Christmas break. The club has two teams on top of the Bowls Victoria Pennant Competition ladder (section one and section five) while two other teams (section six and section seven) are also locked inside the top four. To highlight its dominance, Deer Park has won 26 matches for the year and lost just 12 across its top four teams. “We were all very happy with the first part of the season,” Franksen said. “The hardest part now is trying to fit those players into the sides and keep them as active as what they are. We have an abundance of really strong players. “These are quality players too. It is going to be a very difficult job for the selectors to get the sides sorted out.” After the dominating start to the season, all that remains for one of the West’s fastest growing bowls clubs is to finish off the hard work in finals. While the majority of pennant sides
focus on the results of their top side at the business end of the season, Deer Park is concentrating on its lower grades with the club hoping to bridge the gap between division one (top side) and division five (second side). “We have worked hard to get where we are,” Franksen said. “We really need our division five, six and seven sides to get up now. If our division one side doesn’t win a premiership, it’s not the end of the world. We have plenty of time to get into Premier League. “We really need three or four years in division one before we tackle Premier League. There is nothing worse than going up and then going straight back down. We have worked hard to get where we are, and we don’t want to waste those opportunities.” Deer Park will resume its season this weekend against eighth-placed MCC. The club will also be hosting an Open Fours Tournament in late March. Anyone seeking more information is encouraged to contact the club.

Kids are still the favourites By LIAM TWOMEY THERE was plenty of action at the Werribee Racing Club on Sunday. As well as hosting some the best horses and jockeys from around the state, Werribee also held its annual Kids Day Out race meeting. In what were perfect conditions, racegoers of all ages were treated to a wealth of on-course entertainment and fun at the highly successful family day. While there were plenty of attractions off the course at the Werribee Racing Club, the action was just as hot on the track with a seven-race card greeting punters. It was a great start to the day for those trying to find a winner with favourites dominating the early races. Malabar Man, Party Talk, Hard Stride and Kuaima took out the first four races on the card, all saluting at short odds. It wasn’t until race five that the bookies received some respite with Coghills Creek ($15.70), Bedouin Express ($12.10) and Tequila Queen ($22.20) taking out the last three races. The Kids Day Out meeting continues Werribee’s busy season of racing with the club coming off Werribee Cup Day in mid-December. The 2013 TAB Werribee Cup was won by Pel-

There will be no slowing down for racing in Werribee with the season now in full swing. The club’s next meeting will be the Australia Day Races on 26 January. Tough ask for United
By LIAM TWOMEY SUNSHINE claimed a nail-biting victory against Western Suburbs rival Yarraville in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association on Saturday. With both teams needing a win to kick off the New Year, Yarraville made first use with the bat and posted a tough score of 7/178 at the end of its 45 overs. Matthew Love was the best of the Eagles’ batsmen with a classy 76 before he was caught by Sunshine coach Mark Brown off the bowling of Kane Twentyman. Troy Stone was the pick of the Crows’ bowlers taking 3/30 from his eight overs. In reply, Sunshine made a horror start to the run chase to be 2/8. However, the Crows were able to regroup thanks to a brilliant middle order partnership from Fayaz Ughradar (49) and Laka Ullah Khan (42). The pair came together with the score at 4/55 and added a vital 67. The partnership was just the boost the Crows needed as they went on to reach the target in the last over of the day for the loss of just six wickets. The victory is Sunshine’s third of the VSDCA season and lifts the Crows into 10th spot on the ladder. Yarraville remains one spot further back in 11th with just the two wins for the season. When round nine begins this weekend, Sunshine will take on Noble Park while Yarraville will meet Box Hill.
FOOTSCRAY United went into Saturday’s North Division Turf Cricket clash with PEGS as a heavy underdog, and by game’s end the inevitable eventuated. It was a one-day clash that pitted top versus bottom, with United choosing to send PEGS in to bat first at Scovell Reserve. For a while that decision by United skipper Damian Grainger looked a winner, as Keilor Park-based PEGS faltered through the early portions of its innings and was in some trouble at 3/23 before Srinand Yalamanchili (57) and Adam Dudderidge (49) combined for 110 to restore balance in PEGS’s favour. An unbeaten 41 from Suranjith Silva late in the piece ensured PEGS a strong finish, setting Footscray United a formidable 214 for victory with three wickets in hand after 40 overs. Despite a solid 49 from Dadimuni Geeth Silva, United could only last 30 overs before losing all 10 wickets, making only 102 in the process.

A SEVEN-wicket haul from gun quick Jake Haberfield has put Footscray Edgewater in the box seat of its Premier Cricket clash with Melbourne Uni. In the first match back from the Christmas break, Haberfield picked up exactly where he left off in the first half of the season, removing opening batsman Thomas Polkinghorne for a duck. That was only the beginning of the pain for the batting side though as the former South Australian proved a constant headache throughout the innings. Haberfield’s figures of 7/67 take his season tally to 34 at an average of just 14.15. The constant flow of wickets restricted Melbourne Uni to 227 from 72.4 overs. Mark Simpson was the pick of the batsmen with 61 while
Daniel Hutton also made 38. For Footscray, the remaining wickets were taken by Hamish Winter-Irving (2/35) and Michael Kelly (1/33). Footscray captain Dean Russ was full of praise for Haberfield. “The big thing that surprises me the most about Jake is his ability to bowl long spells and maintain his pace,” he said. In his opening spell he bowled 12 overs on the trot and bowled 23 overs for the day which is just an outstanding effort. It just shows his quality as a bowler. “I would have thought 250 to 270 is probably par at that ground. The deck was quite tacky and offered us a bit early. Having them 4/50 we wanted to strive to contain them to under 200. At the end of the day, rolling them for 227, you would take that.” With 14 overs left in the day’s play, Russ and Anthony
Barton padded up for the Bulldogs and raced to an impressive start. The pair added 52 for the first wicket before Barton was removed by Fawad Ahmed for 23. Footscray will resume its innings this week at 1/56, needing a further 172 to claim victory. Russ said batting in partnerships and the battle with Ahmed would be the key to chasing down the remaining runs this week. “I think if we can starve him (Ahmed) from wickets, that is probably the biggest one,” Russ said. “He is a very good bowler. If we can stop him from getting wickets as much as possible and score at the other end, that will be a key. “The biggest thing is just partnerships. If one bloke in the top five can go on and get a 70 or an 80 at least, that should be enough to see us through.”
SUNSHINE United knocked off Point Cook in a top-of-the-table clash at Saltwater Reserve in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 competition on Saturday. After being sent in on the road, United posted a healthy 8/167 in its 40-over dig. In response Point Cook was poor, faltering to a measly all-out 91 from just 30 overs. Chris Kavanagh was the only Point Cook batsman to hit double figures, making 38 before getting bowled. In other results from the division, NewportDigman was far too good for Deer Park Ardeer at John McLeod Reserve on Saturday. After being sent in, Newport Digman posted a very healthy 5/202, before restricting Deer Park Ardeer to 113 in 36.2 overs. Meanwhile, Sunshine Heights remains in the top four after easily getting past Wyndham Vale at Ainsworth Reserve. Heights could only reach 160 in the first innings, but managed to restrict Wyndham Vale to 72, bowling them out in 25.4 overs. GRAND United has finally succumbed to its first loss of the summer, going down to West Newport in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf competition on Saturday. Choosing to bat first at West Newport’s Loft Reserve, Grand United recovered from a dicey start to reach 7/186 in the one-day clash. At 2/2 the visitors were in serious trouble, but a very solid showing from the middle order ensured Grand United a respectable final total. West Newport then made much better use of the wicket, with opener Ross Cassidy setting the tone from start to finish, scoring an unbeaten 63. With the support of skipper Trent Jones (50) batting at number four, West Newport reached its target in 35 overs, ending the game at 4/187. Other winners in the A Turf competition on Saturday were Williamstown Imperials, Williamstown Colts, Melton Centrals and Bellbridge. FOLLOWING the appointment of senior interleague head coach Brett Jacobs the Western Region Football League has announced two new members to join the coaching committee, with league great Steve Thom appointed as chairman of selectors and Altona Vikings reserves coach Aaron Freeland as assistant coach. With nearly 60 years of experience in the WRFL between the three men, the league is in good hands when it comes up against the Southern Football League in the 2014 AFL Victoria Metro Championships held on March 29 at Visy Park. With over 1500 senior players registered in the WRFL in 2013, the selection process for the final representative squad will not be an easy task. “Obviously there are a lot of great players in the league, but what we’re looking for are players who are 100 per cent committed to the team and who share the belief that it is a privilege to wear the WRFL jumper and represent football in the West,” Thom said.

Old Mentonians smashed By ADEM SARICAOGLU YARRAVILLE Club reminded its rivals it is still a force in Senior Division Turf Cricket after smashing Old Mentonians by eight wickets on Saturday. The hosts chose to bat first on their Mentone Grammar home deck but could only post 128, before the Clubbers swiftly managed to chase it down and reach 4/171 in the 40-overa-side one-dayer. Yarraville Club captaincoach Emmett Bronca, who was his side’s leading bowler for the day with 3/33 and a maiden off eight overs, was keen to praise the collective bowling effort early in the day. “From the start we really built pressure in bowling partnerships,” Bronca said. “It was great to see Richard Sherlock (2/22) bowl fantastically and then Adam Contessa (2/21) and Andrew Cullen (1/23) really worked hard to build the dot ball pressure. “Then (Michael) O’Keefe did what he does best with just really tight bowling and the fielding was probably the best we’ve fielded all year. “It was just an allround, team bowling unit effort, and probably the best we’ve done with the ball and in the field all year.”
Old Mentonians openers Simon Cormie and Ross Zelem shot out to a 42-run partnership before Cullen took the important first wicket of the day, removing Cormie for 16. From there Yarraville Club’s attack gathered momentum, ripping through the middle and lower order before embarking on the chase. The Clubbers’ top order fired, only losing two wickets before reaching their target of 129 with Ben Pope (49) and Aaron Mato (35) in the middle. The win lifted Yarraville Club from 10th to seventh on the table. “It sets up the platform for us moving forward,” Bronca said. “Knowing we’ve now got to have another good win next week before the two-dayers come in, we knew these two one-dayers would really separate the top half of the competition from the bottom half. “We knew if we could win out on the road at Mentone and then hopefully have a good one against Keilor (this coming Saturday) - we may even see ourselves sitting in fourth or fifth next week.” After next week’s road trip to Keilor, the Clubbers will resume two-day cricket at home to Airport West Yarraville Club’s Emmett Bronca says his side can feel “something special starting to happen” with four games to come this St Christophers. Season of celebration for Justin By LIAM TWOMEY IT’S TURNING into a season of celebration for the Footscray United Cricket Club. Having recently raised the bat for the club’s 80th anniversary, the hits kept coming during the Christmas break. Footscray player and secretary Justin McDonald was honoured for his outstanding volunteer work at the Kookaburra Volunteer Recognition Breakfast. The event, which is run by Cricket Victoria, was held on day three of last year’s Boxing Day Test. To make the occasion even more special, McDonald’s award was presented to him by English cricketing great, Sir Ian Botham. “It was a bit overwhelming to be honest,” McDonald said. “It was a bit of a shock and I didn’t ever expect to get any award like that but it was great and it was a really good day.” McDonald’s award continues what has been a strong period for Footscray United with the club bouncing back after a battle for numbers. “A couple of years ago things were starting to go downhill a little bit. We had lost a few players from where we had been,” McDonald explained. “This year and towards the end of last year we have really picked up a lot more players. We are on the improve rather than on the decline which is great for the club. “That is the result of a five-year plan the committee started and things are really looking up.”

“At the moment we have just had our 80th anniversary. The next goal is to get to 90 years and then 100 years. That would be great,” McDonald said.
“Over the next five or six years we are hoping to increase the number of sides we have got as well. At the moment we have got three sides but it would be great to be able to get that up to five or six sides.”
Willi recruits strongly WILLIAMSTOWN has added even more young talent to its 2014 playing list. Isaiah Miller, Michael Gibbons and Reid Adams will line up at Williamstown next year, joining the club from Bendigo Pioneers, Murray Bushrangers and Geelong Falcons respectively. The star trio also played a mixture of representative, VFL, school and senior football last year. Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon was delighted to secure the talented crop. “They’re three really exciting signings for us,” Dixon said. “All three players bring different qualities and traits but we’re delighted to have them on board. “Isaiah Miller has obviously been extremely highly rated having been selected in the AIS Academy and for one reason or another didn’t get drafted. We’re looking forward to really working on aspects of his game and hopefully putting his name back up in lights in 12 months’ time. “Michael Gibbons has been one of the most prolific ball winners in the country in his age bracket in the past four years. “Reid Adams joins us from the Falcons and we think he is a really nice prospect. He is a great size for a modern midfielder and averaged good numbers in the TAC Cup this season.” Miller, Gibbons and Adams join a host of offseason recruits at the Seagulls including Sean Tighe, David Fahey, Brad Mangan and Scott Clouston. The Seagulls have also wasted no time finding a replacement for gun ruckman Cameron Wood who was rookie listed by Carlton. Williamstown signed 207cm giant Michael Sikora from the Essendon Football Club. Seagulls’ CEO Brendan Curry said he thought it was a good fit for both player and club. “After Cam Wood was taken by Carlton our need for a ruckman obviously increased,” he said. “Michael was looking for a new home and an opportunity to come in and continue his development. We think it’s going to be a good fit and we’re excited about what Michael will be able to provide us.”

It pays to promote HAPPY New Year. 2014 has come along very quickly and there is a lot on the sporting calendar for this year that excites me and I am sure it excites you. Cricket is heading towards the finals and Werribee Cricket Club is going well and is the only local club who has kept me informed of its progress so far this season. While I don’t want to start the year on a downer, I have to ask the question: What is wrong with other clubs in the area? You are doing a fine job of NOT promoting your sport and your club, please take a bow. Don’t whinge to me or ask me for publicity for an event in the future if that is your attitude. It only takes an email to remedy the situation. Make it happen. I AM excited, as are a lot of people in local footy circles, by the fact that a WRFL senior interleague side will be representing the West for the first time in over a decade at the Victorian Metro Championships on 29 March at Visy Park. The league has named a preliminary squad of 70 players from both Division One and Two players. One player who was not named was Shannon Broadbent of Deer Park. Social media went to town on Shannon and as is usually the case they got it wrong. The league thought Shannon was not going to play in the WRFL in 2014 so they did not include him in the squad. When they discovered that that information was incorrect they contacted him and he immediately committed to the squad. So the detractors on Big Footy and other social media can back off. My understanding is that Shannon is looking forward to the game and representing the WRFL. I AM intrigued to know if local pubs and clubs have experienced a lift in the interest and involvement in darts in the last few weeks on the back of the International Darts Competition held at Etihad Stadium last weekend. The Wizard of Oz, Simon Whitlock (a Bulldogs supporter) was in town and the stadium hosted about 8000 fans nightly to witness the competition. I am intrigued to know if you think it is a legitimate sport or just a pastime and whether you would go to an event in the future more than once. I wonder if this is a novelty event?

Pirates tackle Demons in ‘grudge match’ By LIAM TWOMEY THE Winter Olympics may be just around the corner but that won’t be the only big ice hockey event coming up next month. The Footscray Pirates Ice Hockey Club, which reformed three years ago, will play arch-rivals the Demons at the Ice House in Docklands. The annual “grudge match” will see the two teams go head-to-head for the Andy McDowell Trophy. Pirates president Allan Frith is hoping a big crowd will get behind his club. “Last year we had about 250 people turn up, which was great,” he said. “We also had the Williamstown RSL Bagpipe Band. Everybody loved it. The atmosphere that the drums and the bagpipes gave when we marched on to the ice was electric. Everybody has been asking if they were coming back this year
and it is great to have them on board again.” The Pirates will be looking to claim their first Andy McDowell Trophy with the event now in its third year. At the half way mark of the Ice Hockey Victoria Summer League season, Footscray is currently in fourth spot on the ladder after a premiership win in 2012/13. “The competition has been a hell of a lot harder this season,” Frith said. “The summer competition league has grown a lot. There are a lot more teams than last year. I would have said it has increased by 50 per cent. The interest in the sport is growing dramatically and with the Winter Olympic games coming up in February, the interest in Winter Olympic sports is becoming more popular.” The Andy McDowell Trophy will be contested on Saturday 1 February from 7.30pm.
I AM really enjoying doing the SEN Cricket Show “Howzat” with Rodney Hogg, Smokey Dawson and Adam Dale. It has given me the chance to talk to some of my cricketing idols like Doug Walters, David Boon and Greg Chappell. We are on for a few weeks more so tune in Saturdays at 11am. Footy is not far away with the Bulldogs Family Day coming up on Sunday 9 February at Whitten Oval from 9.30am. WERRIBEE Cricket Club has started 2014 off in great fashion and are on track for a very successful year. The first X1 scored a comfortable win in the first game of the new year, with the Dean brothers starring with the bat. The best news for the club is that all four senior sides are in the top four and bound for finals. The club is holding its Pink Stumps Day for the McGrath Foundation on 22 February and will be hosting a Ladies High Tea on the day from 2pm to 5pm. If you would like to donate any goods or services to the auction on the day or if you would like to attend contact Deb Dean deeno@bigpond.net.au. The club is organising a special guest speaker for the high tea so it should be a great afternoon. MURRAY Crawford powered to victory in the Footscray Cycling Club’s A Grade race on Saturday. With a small respite between Melbourne’s sweltering weather giving racers cool conditions and little wind, riders took advantage of the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU/FCC Sports Criterium Track in Hoppers Crossing. The A Grade race was down on numbers due to the Australian National Road Championships in Ballarat but four B Graders volunteered to bolster the numbers. Proving that last week’s win in B Grade was a sign of things to come, 49-year-old Murray Crawford surprised the bunch with a canny solo breakaway in the last three laps to take the win. The Altona North resident was impressed with the general attitude of the bunch. “They were all having a bit of a go, lots of attacks, and myself and Ben O’Leary had just had a few goes when I thought I might just slip away to the side,” he said. “I hoped a few might go with me but obviously they hesitated and let me get a bit of a gap. “Then I just set up a bit of a rhythm and was able to hold the bunch off so it was pretty good. “It’s good to go back to A the right way.’ Behind Crawford in the bunch sprint Wednesday’s winner Ben Ryan took second place, with Brett Hickford taking a strong third place. In other results for the day, Les Kennett took out the B Grade race from Richard Conejo and Antonio Marino. In C Grade, Gerard Zammit was victorious over Paul Rettke while Dennis Titto claimed victory in D Grade. Racing will continue for the Footscray Cycling Club this weekend.
