By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM Council has released its wish list for the upcoming State Budget and on top of the list is fixing the $1.3 billion arterial road backlog and building 25 new schools needed in the area. The council’s submission to the 2014/15 budget included new figures which shed light on the pressures

caused by population growth. For example, from 2006 to 2011 Wyndham’s average population increase was 4.4 per cent - four times higher than the national average. Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough said the municipality would be home to 25 per cent of metropolitan Melbourne’s projected population growth over the next few decades.

“There’s a significant backlog of tion. Roadstar

HAPPY New Year. It is great to be back in Star for 2014 and I am grateful to my one and only sponsor Westpoint Ford for again supporting this column. Chris Byrne and his team are great people and I really hope you can support them. So, what is the Hillier View of 2014? I think all our traffic problems will be fixed, there will be no issues with our public transport, hospitals or crime and the world will be a better place. Yeah right. I just hope things get better, I am not hoping for a miracle just that there is an improvement. What about you?

Cr Fairclough said that Werribee Mercy hospital also needed funding for additional emergency, maternity and palliative care beds and additional mental health staff to cope with demand. “The shortage of critical services also extends to crisis accommodation, where Wyndham has just four units serving a population of around 200,000,” he said.

“The government need to act now to provide the infrastructure and services Wyndham desperately needs to keep pace with our population growth.” Victorian Treasurer Michael O’Brien did not answer questions about what Wyndham was likely to receive in the budget but did say that the council’s submission would be considered as part of the 2014-15 budget process.

Deadlines for Issue Dated 28 January, 2014

I NEED your help on a bugbear of mine - traffic on Old Geelong Rd has never been worse and it is the off season. The new Bunnings requires its own set of lights, no worries from me on that. Why though is traffic in that area slowing down and causing through-traffic to be held up? While I am on that stretch of road and business, why are so many business places closing down? Bunnings is a great boost to the area in so many ways, but I worry about the overall economic health of the strip, especially on the railway side of the road. WHAT is the deal with New Year? I thought my house was the epicentre of the entire Hoppers Crossing pyrotechnics display and I was not that happy about it. I grew up with fireworks, we could buy them in the local milkbar and we did a lot of silly things but times have changed. I have no idea where people get them from these days but they certainly can still get them.

From Page 1 “Bus services need to be extended to more areas of Tarneit, Truganina, Point Cook and Wyndham Vale, where approximately 12,000 households are still more than 400 metres from a bus stop,” he said. “We’re calling for bus routes to be extended into the growing suburbs across Wyndham, but also for additional commuter parking around our train stations.”

THE new speed zones introduced pre Christmas are both good and bad. I can understand the change in Hogans Rd where 70 has always seemed too fast. Last year we saw a car plough into a business and that was due to speed. Whoever the dill was who decided to graffiti out the speed markers last week needs to ask themselves what was the motivation behind that action. I actually think the new speed zones are warranted but we need a bit of time to get used to them. I trust the police and other authorities will be a bit patient.

Car theft warning By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM residents are being urged by police to use common sense to help stamp out a growing crime. During December there 140 reports of thefts from motor vehicles in Wyndham, which Victoria Police said was a significant increase. Many of the offences have occurred in and around train stations and shopping centres and from residential premises.

Wyndham Crime Impact Team Acting Detective Sergeant Nick DiMieri said people were making life easy for opportunistic thieves leaving valuables clearly visible within their cars or by even leaving their cars unlocked. “We are urging people to take some simple preventative steps. These thieves are opportunistic. Don’t make your car an easy target,” Acting Det Sgt Di-Mieri said. “It takes a matter of seconds for a thief to open the door and grab that

laptop, wallet or loose change you have left on the front seat. Remember to lock up and take any valuables with you.” Acting Det Sgt Di-Mieri said the Wyndham Crime Impact Team was set up to specifically target theft from and theft of motor vehicle offences in the police service area. He said the team would continue its focus on reducing vehicle offences and other high volume crime in the area by patrolling known hotspots and targeting known re-

peat offenders. He said simple steps like removing all valuables from cars, storing items that cannot be removed out of sight, and removing GPS units and wiping the suction marks they leave on the window, could help reduce the risks of a theft. Anyone who may have information about motor vehicle theft should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers. com.au

Alarm as deadly dog virus hits the West By YASEMIN TALAT PUPPIES in the Western Suburbs are falling victim to the deadly parvovirus following a spike in cases referred to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in recent months. Sunshine, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee have all been named as hotspots for the infection, which has seen 34 cases admitted in the last three months and five last weekend alone. Head Veterinarian of in-patients at Lort Smith, Dr Andrew Kapsis said it was essential to vaccinate

puppies against such deadly viruses and ensure the full course of vaccinations was completed. “This is a serious disease,” Dr Kapsis said. “Without treatment about 95 per cent of infected dogs will die and even with treatment about 30 per cent won’t make it.” Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that is spread through the faeces of infected dogs and can survive in the environment, such as local parks, for many months.

“You don’t need to have direct contact between dogs for the virus to spread,” Dr Kapsis said. “It can be transmitted through contact with contaminated faeces in the environment, on contaminated shoes, clothing or other objects, such as balls.” Dr Kapsis said the symptoms of parvovirus would start showing within two to seven days and may include pets losing appetite, becoming lethargic and developing vomiting, profuse bloody diarrhoea and dehydration. He said severely affected dogs

could go into shock from dehydration and sepsis, which often resulted in sudden death. Dr Kapsis said treatment for parvovirus was also expensive, due to the need for intensive care and isolation required during a lengthy hospital stay. “I can’t stress strongly enough the importance of protecting your dog against this horrific disease,” Dr Kapsis said. The Lort Smith Animal Hospital is Australia’s largest not for profit veterinary hospital and provides discounted vaccination rates.

Tip reference group expands WYNDHAM Council has increased from five to seven the number of community representatives on the Wests Road Refuse Disposal Facility (RDF) and Waste Management Community Reference Group, which will help guide the future development of the facility. Wyndham councillors have endorsed Harry van Moorst (Western Region Environment Centre), John Faranda (Werribee South Ratepayers Association), Julian Menegazzo, Alan Kendall (nearby landowners), Julie Hammett, Shaun Taliana and Karen Hucker (Wyndham

landowners) to fill the seven community representative positions. Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough said the group would work to increase community understanding about the RDF and its impacts and to build partnerships with the community on waste management initiatives. “The Community Reference Group will play an important role and will be expected to consider issues including the future operations of the RDF, diverting waste from landfill and the conversion of waste

to energy and to make recommendations on these issues,” Cr Fairclough said. “Information about the ongoing development of the RDF will be made available through a twice yearly newsletter to the surrounding community, Wyndham News, local media and on Wyndham City’s website.” For more information about the Wests Road Refuse Disposal Facility and Waste Management Community Reference Group, phone Wyndham Council on 9742 0777 or visit www. wyndham.vic.gov.au

Remembering Jordyn WERRIBEE HYUNDAI 37-43 Cherry Street, Werribee. 1300 533 214 By XAVIER SMERDON

WHEN Werribee teenager Jordyn Hare passed away last year, it was the worst time of his father Jason’s life. “The fact that he passed away unexpectedly hit me really hard,” Mr Hare said. But almost one year later to the day, Mr Hare is hoping to use his son’s short life as a source of inspiration to others. Jordyn was just 18-years-old when he passed away following an epileptic fit. Next month his family and friends will gather to pay tribute

to him while also raising money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria. The event, Remembering Jordyn, will be a showcase of the entertainment industry, which Jordyn was starting to break into before his death. Mr Hare said one of the most difficult things about his son’s passing was telling his two other young children. “We all had moments of weakness in 2013 but now we are trying to make 2014 a more positive year,” he said. “Life is short and epilepsy

is one of those afflictions that strikes randomly and all too often very tragically. “You can either crumple yourself on the floor and disappear or soldier on.” The Burnside father said since he started planning the event in July last year there had already been a more positive feeling amongst his family and friends. Remembering Jordyn will be held on 7 February in North Melbourne. For more information visit www.oztix.com.au

Angry residents appeal council decision By XAVIER SMERDON

Steve and Kathryn Lowe with two of their kids, Harry and Olivia, in front of the block Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI where the apartments could be built. 107897

A WERRIBEE family will take the developer of a 41 apartment complex to VCAT after Wyndham Council approved it to be built in a quiet court. At the last council meeting of 2013 the four storey development in Watergum Court was given the tick of approval by five of the nine councillors present. Councillor Marie Brittan raised an alternative motion calling for the planning application to be knocked back. Cr Brittan argued that the building would be an overdevelopment of the site and that

the shortfall of parking spaces and poor parking arrangements would create access and safety issues in the court. Steve Lowe and his wife Kathryn, who moved into the court after building a new house directly across from where the apartments might be built late last year, were two of the objectors to the proposal. Mr Lowe said he felt the councillors were favouring developers over residents. “It leaves a lot of uncertainty for people out there that are thinking of buying or building a house,” Mr Lowe said. “If they can approve 41 apartments in a court, where

does that leave other people?” Mr Lowe said he always knew something would be built on the vacant land but he thought 41 apartments was a clear overdevelopment. “We’re extremely disappointed in the councillors and we think they took the easy way out,” he said. “They should be standing up for residents, not just developers.” Along with four other neighbours the Lowes have hired a private planning company to handle their appeal at VCAT.

A HOPPERS Crossing woman may have to give up on her dream of opening up a cat boarding business in Caroline Springs that could save countless abandoned cats all because of a landlord’s demands. Ebony Centazzo has been running Cat Napping Suburban Retreat for over a year in Hoppers Crossing, where her business became the first ever cats only boarding kennel in the municipality, and she regularly has clients travel from as far away as St Kilda and all over the Western Suburbs. This year she was hoping to expand the business and

open a second kennel in Caroline Springs, but this time she wanted to give back to the community. Teaming up with Forever Friends Animal Rescue, Ms Centazzo had planned to help abandoned cats and kittens find homes. According to recent figures, almost 1000 stray cats are caught and destroyed every year in Wyndham alone. But Ms Centazzo’s dream may have to be placed on the backburner after the landlord of the only suitable warehouse in Caroline Springs demanded a $20,000 bond upfront, which they would keep for several years.

She has now laid the future of her dream in the hands of crowd funding website indiegogo, where she is asking for people to donate money to help her pay the bond. “The only reason I have turned to crowd funding is because it is such a small amount, investors wouldn’t be interested. The $20,000 is to secure the bond on a warehouse, which I find ridiculous,” Ms Centazzo said. “l feel I am being taken advantage of for being a young female business owner.” For more information on Ms Centazzo’s campaign visit www.indiegogo.com/projects/ unique-cat-hotel

Kyle Brunner is a ball boy at the Australian Open. 112579

Tuesday, 14 January, 2014 Page 7

Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

Kyle’s on the ball By XAVIER SMERDON MOST people will spend their whole life admiring their sporting heroes from a distance, but one Hoppers Crossing teenager is one of a select few that is able to stand right next to his idols. For the fourth year in a row Kyle Brunner will be a ball boy at this month’s Australian Open tennis Grand Slam. A tennis player himself since the age of just three, Kyle has been lucky enough to meet the biggest and best stars of the circuit in the world, including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and his personal favourite, JoWilfried Tsonga. “I love being a ball boy,” Kyle said. “It’s really inspirational to

be around these players that I’ve always wanted to be with and be like.” “To be able to see the players that you’re inspired to be like so close to you is grouse.” Kyle is now considered an elite ball boy himself, as this year will mark his fourth Australian Open, the maximum amount a person is allowed to do. One of the highlights of Kyle’s tenure was in 2012 when Greek-Cypriot player, Marcus Baghdatis, went into a now infamous meltdown and smashed four of his own rackets on the tennis court in a matter of seconds. Kyle was the ball boy required to collect the broken

rackets and remove them from the court. “When he first started smashing them I was in shock, but then I kind of just enjoyed it because the crowd was so loud and you don’t see it very often,” he said. The first question Kyle is always asked usually relates to whether or not he kept one of the rackets, but he insists that anything like that is removed by officials immediately. Until the 26 January, Kyle will be one of only 380 ball boys and girls helping the tournament run smoothly and he said once it is over he will continue to focus on his dream of becoming a professional tennis player himself.

Ceremony of a new brew By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM residents and visitors to the area will be able to experience the world’s original coffee this summer with special demonstrations of Ethiopian coffee ceremonies being held at the Werribee Open Range Zoo. The zoo will be hosting Rhythm of Africa every Saturday night until 22 February, transforming the tourist attraction into something reminiscent of the continent that the animals that call it home come from. While there will be traditional performances from African musicians, visitors will also be able to taste the ancestor to modern coffee. Atakilty Woreita moved to Australia 14 years ago from a small village in northern Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, and she now lives in Werribee. As is customary in Ethiopia, she learned how to perform the elaborate coffee making ceremony when she was just a child. Just to have two small cups of

the coffee, which is served without milk, and in some parts of country salt is added instead of sugar, takes Ms Woreita over an hour to prepare. “In Ethiopia having coffee with your guests is all about relaxing and having conversations,” Ms Woreita said. “After we go to church every morning, and before we go to work or school, we need to have a coffee with the family.” The coffee is brewed over burning charcoal, which Ms Woreita said gives it a unique flavour, and it is served with fresh popcorn. “People always want to learn how to make the coffee, but I can’t teach them,” she said. “It’s a mind game, you can’t learn it quickly. You need to know what it smells like when it’s ready and what it looks like. “I can’t tell you how long it will take.” For more information about Rhythm of Africa, visit www.zoo. org.au/werribee

A WYNDHAM Vale comedian is getting ready to conquer the world after being one of only three Australian acts invited to perform at an iconic festival in San Francisco. Mark Samual Bonanno is one part of the four man comedy troupe, Aunty Donna, who next month will be flying to America to perform at the SF Sketchfest. Along with Tommy Dassalo and Wil Anderson, they

his dream was to be able to take Aunty Donna around the world. “I was doing an acting course in Ballarat and even then I didn’t think I wanted to be a performer, it was just something that happened,” Mr Bonanno said. “The plan at the time was to get through the course and then just become a writer but about three weeks into it something just clicked and now this is what I want to do.” Aunty Donna started gain-

ing international fans after posting their comedy routines on YouTube, where they have since received over 300,000 views. After one of their skits was shared by a fan on reddit. com, an American website, they received 160,000 hits overnight. Wine and cheese festival By XAVIER SMERDON WERRIBEE is getting ready to play host to an event that will combine the best ingredients of a fun time, cider and cheese, celebrated by thousands of people. For the first time ever next month the council will be hosting the Fromage a Trois festival, which will see the best cheeses and ciders from around the country brought to Werribee Park. Wyndham Councillor Michele Wharrie said visitors will have the chance to taste, purchase and experience some of Australia’s finest specialist cheeses, ciders, boutique beers,

gourmet cuisine and premium wines. “This is the perfect opportunity to bring a picnic blanket, a few friends and enjoy a lazy afternoon on the lawn discovering and sampling some of the very best in quality artisan produce,” Cr Wharrie said. “Some of Australia’s premier cheese and cider producers will be there, so you can meet the maker and savour tastes from around Australia. Those looking to extend their experience can also attend a workshop and learn about the ancient crafts of cheese and cider making.” Author, cider-maker and wine critic, Max Allen, will host masterclasses on perfect pairings

for cheese and cider while Wyndham’s own Matt Harrop, from Werribee South’s Shadowfax Winery, will battle Max in the ultimate question - what is better with cheese, cider or wine? “While you’re enjoying some mouthwatering delights, you’ll also be able to relax and soak up the sounds of some fantastic music that will be playing on the main stage throughout the afternoon - it’s the ideal day out.” For more information on Fromage A Trois, which will be held on Sunday 2 February, phone Wyndham Council’s Events Unit on 9742 0777 or visit www.fromageatrois.com. au

Penrose Sean’s award for teaching excellence community hub opens By YASEMIN TALAT

WYNDHAM’S newest community centre promised to have something for everyone when it was opened last week. The $9.4 million Penrose Promenade Community Hub, which received $1 million in funding from the State Government with the remaining $8.4 million being provided by Wyndham Council, is located in the Tarneit Gardens Estate. It includes five community meeting rooms, two kindergarten rooms, maternal and child health consulting rooms, an ageing well facility and sensory gardens. Councillor Gautam Gupta said the new centre will be a buzzing community hub for everybody to enjoy. “As well as being the new home of Wyndham City’s Aged and Disability services, Penrose Promenade Community Hub will support the learning, recreation and health and wellbeing needs of our community,” Cr Gupta said. “With Tarneit’s population expected to grow to more than 25,000 residents by 2031, facilities like Penrose Promenade Community Hub are crucial. By constructing this Centre, Wyndham City is continuing its commitment to provide social and recreational infrastructure to Tarneit residents, which last year included the opening of the $9.1 million Wootten Road Reserve. “Whether it’s getting fit by attending a Heartmoves or Zumba class, attending a parenting group meeting or a film screening, there will be plenty happening at Penrose Promenade Community Hub in 2014.” The Centre will host a community lunch on Wednesday 19 February from midday to 1pm. It is located at 83 Penrose Promenade in Tarneit.

Man fined over building works A MAN who carried out building works on a Hoppers Crossing house without being a registered builder has been convicted and fined $5000 by the Victorian Building Authority. Tye Lobley was hired to convert a double garage in Hoppers Crossing into three habitable rooms. He told the homeowners that a building permit was not required for the work and agreed to do the job for $6210. The owners reported the issue to the VBA after Mr Lobley failed to provide them with a proper written contract for the work. VBA Compliance and Performance Director Murray Smith said all domestic building work in Victoria costing more than $5000 must be done by a builder who is registered with the Building Practitioners Board (BPB). “This case demonstrates why it is so important for property owners to make sure they use a registered builder and that they have a building permit for the work,” Mr Smith said. For more information about building permits, owners should talk to their local council or visit the VBA website at www.vba.vic.gov.au

HOPPERS CROSSING school teacher Sean Stanek is one of only 60 teachers who have won the 2013 ASG NEiTA Awards for Inspirational Educators award. The National Excellence In Teaching Awards saw 1308 teachers across Australia nominated to receive an award for their excellence in education. Mr Stanek, who has been teaching for 17 years, has played a pivotal role teaching the students at Woodville Primary School for the last five years. He was nominated by the School Council and the Parents and Friends Association, for his ‘commitment to each and every one of the Woodville students’. “It was a big surprise to get the nomination and I feel honoured to be recognised,” Mr Stanek said. “I’m thankful for the support from the staff, my family and the community, this award is partly theirs as well and it’s great to be able to share it with such a great community.” His achievements at Woodville include being instrumental in initiating and implementing a specialist science program across prep to grade six; running a successful school-wide Behaviour Program; and providing individualised programs for his classroom students. Mr Stanek said he was trying to make a difference with every child and loved seeing his students achieve new things. “As a classroom teacher I’m able to share experiences and give students a new way of thinking and a new way of learning,” he said. HOPPERS CROSSING apprentice plumber Andre Bistisi was one of three Victorians to receive the Rheem Plumber Apprentice Grants this year. Eighteen-year-old Andre was awarded the $1000 grant to financially help him pursue his career. Andre said he loved everything about his apprenticeship, and hoped his career choice would set him up for the future. “I just love being outside,” Andre said. “And there are so many aspects of plumbing; you’re not always doing the same thing every day.” Andre said the grant helped him pay some of his school fees and buy new tools and work uniform. “It helped me heaps with paying for school fees, just putting a bit towards my school fees helps,” Andre said. “It was money I didn’t have.” Andre, who is doing mostly domestic plumbing, hoped to branch into commercial jobs when he completed all his training. There were more than 200 entries for the grant this year, and Andre said he was happy to be one of 25 apprentice plumbers Australia-wide to receive a grant. Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants scheme was developed to assist apprentices and young people in achieving their dreams and career objectives in plumbing. “It’s obvious there are a lot of apprentices of all ages who are committed to the plumbing industry, but might need a helping hand,” said Rheem Australia CEO Matt Sexton. Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants 2013 recognised apprentices who required financial help or who were helping in the community or had future plans to do so.

Andre Bistisi has used his grant to buy much needed tools and it has helped him pay school expenses. 111270 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

Surgery funding gets big boost By CHARLENE MACAULAY WESTERN Health will share in a $15 million State Government grant to boost elective surgeries across its three hospitals. Western Health, which manages the Sunshine, Williamstown and Western Hospitals, has received a $275,000 grant to perform an additional 120 nose and throat operations, which will predominantly be undertaken at Sunshine Hospital and cut waiting list times for children. Western Health also received a $338,000 grant in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Services, which will provide 100 patients on the Western Health elective surgery waiting list with the opportunity to have their surgery at an earlier time at Bacchus Marsh Hospital. The types of surgery to be performed in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Service include orthopaedic, general, gynaecology and ear, nose and throat surgery. Figures from the Victorian Health Services Performance Re-

port reveal that Western Hospital’s elective surgery list has almost doubled in the past year, with more than 2000 patients waiting for a variety of operations. At Sunshine Hospital, the elective surgery waiting list has jumped from 1425 in the June 2012 quarter to 2130 in the June 2013 quarter, while the list dropped by more than 200 patients at Williamstown Hospital over the past year, with 402 patients waiting for elective surgery. “Western Health is extremely pleased to have received two additional funding packages for elective surgery to treat patients between January and June 2014,” Western Health Acting Executive Director of Operations Claire Culley said. “Western Health continues to experience increased demand for elective surgery due to the rapid growth in the number of people living in its catchment area. “The additional funding streams provide an opportunity for a greater number of patients to be treated across the health service.”

Police probe boating death By XAVIER SMERDON POLICE are investigating the death of a man following a boating accident near Point Cook earlier this month. A Victoria Police spokesperson said it was believed that on Sunday 5 January three men were in a boat, about 800 metres off the shore, when they got into difficulty at around 5.45pm. All three men managed to swim

to the shore as the boat began to sink. One of the men, who had not been identified at the time of writing, died at the scene a short time later. The two other men were not injured. “The exact cause of the man’s death is yet to be determined however it is not being treated as suspicious,” the spokesperson said. Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.”

Olly gets chance to lead by example By NICOLE VALICEK PROLIFIC lobbyist and volunteer Olly Tripodi was voted as MTV Movement’s inaugural Millennial Leader recently. Australia’s Millennial generation (born 1982 2003) voted 21-year-old Olly from Williamstown as their Youth Parliament trailblazer. The movement aims to highlight issues that matter to young people and to lead social action to improve the future of Australia.

Olly was voted above five other final candidates nationally, and will be ‘in office’ until the UN International Day of Democracy on 14 November, 2014. “I’m absolutely overwhelmed to be representing and advocating for the beliefs of young people,” Olly said. “I don’t think there has been an opportunity of this magnitude to make real change in Australia in our generation.” “Now is the time for the

hard work to prepare myself for the next year. My first step is to listen carefully to what young people are saying.” Olly is a Leading Taskforce Member of Youth Parliament, was a candidate in the most recent municipal elections and has volunteered with the YMCA on youth and Indigenous programs, Volunteering Victoria and World Challenge. “There has never been a generation like ours that is so active, so passionate, inspiring and inspired. This move-

ment competition is proof of that,” he said. As the Millennial Leader, Olly will receive things money can’t buy. These include access to a “Brains Trust” of inspired thinkers and leaders; unique experiences - like being hosted by the House of Representatives at Australian Parliament House in Canberra and broad exposure on MTV outlets and through other channels.

Fun and thrills on the big screen THIS year brings another crop of wacky and wonderful films at the box office. The new releases out this month promise to take viewers on another journey of love, laughter, excitement and drama. Inside Llewyn Davis is a drama directed by brothers Ethan and Joel Coen about a singersongwriter who navigates New York’s folk music scene during the 1960s. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Oscar Isaac, John Goodman and

Garrett Hedlund and boasts a rich soundtrack of folk classics. Inside Llewyn Davis is due to be released on 16 January. Action fans will enjoy Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit for a bit of high octane entertainment. The story is about Jack Ryan, a young covert CIA analyst, who uncovers a Russian plot to crash the US economy with a terrorist attack. Actor Chris Pine plays the lead while Kevin Costner, Kenneth Branagh and Keira Knight-

ley make up the rest of this stellar cast. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit in in cinemas 16 January. The much anticipated Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Wolf of Wall Street also hits the big screen this month. It tells the story of a New York stockbroker who refuses to co-operate in a large securities fraud case involving corruption on Wall Street, corporate banking world and mob infiltration. The biopic is out on 23 January.

For some comic relief Grudge Match should set off a few belly laughs with Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro playing a pair of ageing boxing rivals coaxed out of retirement to fight one final bout – 50 years after their last match. The two old dogs will battle for supremacy in cinemas 23 January. Visit www.yourmovies.com. au for more movie releases and trailers.

Kids are favourites By LIAM TWOMEY

THERE was plenty of action at the Werribee Racing Club on Sunday. As well as hosting some the best horses and jockeys from around the state, Werribee also held its annual Kids Day Out race meeting. In what were perfect conditions, racegoers of all ages were treated to a wealth of on-course entertainment and fun at the highly successful family day. While there were plenty of attractions off the course at the Werribee Racing Club, the action was just as hot on the track with a seven-race card greeting punters. It was a great start to the day for those trying to find a winner with favourites dominating the early races. Malabar Man, Party Talk, Hard Stride and Kuaima took out the first four races on the card, all saluting at short odds. It wasn’t until race five that the bookies received some respite with Coghills Creek ($15.70), Bedouin Express ($12.10) and Tequila Queen ($22.20) taking out the last three races. The Kids Day Out meeting continues Werribee’s busy season of racing with the club coming off Werribee Cup Day in mid-December. The 2013 TAB Werribee Cup was won by Pelicano. There will be no slowing down for racing in Werribee with the season now in full swing. The club’s next meeting will be the Australia Day Races on 26 January. Werribee will also host three meetings in March.

Season of celebration By LIAM TWOMEY IT’S TURNING into a season of celebration for the Footscray United Cricket Club. Having recently raised the bat for the club’s 80th anniversary, the hits kept coming during the Christmas break. Footscray player and secretary Justin McDonald was honoured for his outstanding volunteer work at the Kookaburra Volunteer Recognition Breakfast. The event, which is run by Cricket Victoria, was held on day three of last year’s Boxing Day Test. To make the occasion even more special, McDonald’s award was presented to him by English cricketing great, Sir Ian Botham. “It was a bit overwhelming to be honest,” McDonald said. “It was a bit of a shock and I didn’t ever expect to get any award like that but it was great and it was a really good day.”

McDonald’s award continues what has been a strong period for Footscray United with the club bouncing back after a battle for numbers. “A couple of years ago things were starting to go downhill a little bit. We had lost a few players from where we had been,” McDonald explained. “This year and towards the end of last year we have really picked up a lot more players. We are on the improve rather than on the decline which is great for the club. “That is the result of a five-year plan the committee started and things are really looking up.” While the immediate focus for everyone at Footscray United is on the field, as the business end of the 2013-’14 season approaches the club has no plans to slow down in the coming seasons. “At the moment we have just had

The next goal is to get to 90 years and then 100 years. That would be great,” McDonald said. “Over the next five or six years

we are hoping to increase the number of sides we have got as well. At the moment we have got three sides but it would be great to be able to get that up to five or six sides.”

MURRAY Crawford powered to victory in the Footscray Cycling Club’s A Grade race on Saturday. With a small respite between Melbourne’s sweltering weather giving racers cool conditions and little wind, riders took advantage of the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU/ FCC Sports Criterium Track in Hoppers Crossing. The A Grade race was down on numbers due to the Australian National Road Championships in Ballarat but four B Graders volunteered to bolster the numbers. Proving that last week’s win in B Grade was a sign of things to come, 49-year-old Murray Crawford surprised the bunch with a canny solo breakaway in the last three laps to take the win. The Altona North resident was impressed with the general attitude of the bunch. “They were all having a bit of a go, lots of attacks, and myself and Ben O’Leary had just had a few goes when I thought I might just slip away to the side,” he said. “I hoped a few might go with me but obviously they hesitated and let me get a bit of a gap. “Then I just set up a bit of a rhythm and was able to hold the bunch off so it was pretty good. “It’s good to go back to A the right way.’ Behind Crawford in the bunch sprint Wednesday’s winner Ben Ryan took second place, with Brett Hickford taking a strong third place. In other results for the day, Les Kennett took out the B Grade race from Richard Conejo and Antonio Marino. In C Grade, Gerard Zammit was victorious over Paul Rettke while Dennis Titto claimed victory in D Grade. Racing will continue for the Footscray Cycling Club this weekend.

Tigers well on top

FOOTSCRAY United went into Saturday’s North Division Turf Cricket clash with PEGS as a heavy underdog, and by game’s end the inevitable eventuated. It was a one-day clash that pitted top versus bottom, with United choosing to send PEGS in to bat first at Scovell Reserve. For a while that decision by United skipper Damian Grainger looked a winner, as Keilor Park-based PEGS faltered through the early portions of its innings and was in some trouble at 3/23 before Srinand Yalamanchili (57) and Adam Dudderidge (49) combined for 110 to restore balance in PEGS’s favour. An unbeaten 41 from Suranjith Silva late in the piece ensured PEGS a strong finish, setting Footscray United a formidable 214 for victory with three wickets in hand after 40 overs. Despite a solid 49 from Dadimuni Geeth Silva, United could only last 30 overs before losing all 10 wickets, making only 102 in the process. SUNSHINE United knocked off Point Cook in a top-of-the-table clash at Saltwater Reserve in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 competition on Saturday. After being sent in on the road, United posted a healthy 8/167 in its 40-over dig. In response Point Cook was poor, faltering to a measly all-out 91 from just 30 overs. Chris Kavanagh was the only Point Cook batsman to hit double figures, making 38 before getting bowled. In other results from the division, NewportDigman was far too good for Deer Park Ardeer at John McLeod Reserve on Saturday. After being sent in, Newport Digman posted a very healthy 5/202, before restricting Deer Park Ardeer to 113 in 36.2 overs. Meanwhile, Sunshine Heights remains in the top four after easily getting past Wyndham Vale at Ainsworth Reserve. Heights could only reach 160 in the first innings, but managed to restrict Wyndham Vale to 72, bowling them out in 25.4 overs. Matthew Dean continued his outstanding season with 55 for Werribee on Saturday. 91416 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI

Seven wickets: she’ll be Jake, mate By LIAM TWOMEY A SEVEN-wicket haul from gun quick Jake Haberfield has put Footscray Edgewater in the box seat of its Premier Cricket clash with Melbourne Uni. In the first match back from the Christmas break, Haberfield picked up exactly where he left off in the first half of the season, removing opening batsman Thomas Polkinghorne for a duck. That was only the beginning of the pain for the batting side though as the former South Australian proved a constant headache throughout the innings. Haberfield’s figures of 7/67 take his season tally to 34 at an average of just 14.15. The constant flow of wickets restricted Melbourne Uni to 227 from 72.4 overs. Mark Simpson was the pick of the batsmen with 61 while Daniel Hutton also made 38. For Footscray, the remaining wickets were taken by Hamish Winter-Irving (2/35) and Michael Kelly (1/33). Footscray captain Dean Russ was full of praise for Haberfield. “The big thing that surprises me the most about Jake is his ability to bowl long spells and maintain his pace,” he said. In his opening spell he bowled 12 overs on the trot and bowled 23

Tough ask for United

By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE has maintained its unbeaten run in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The club’s latest victim was fourth-placed Noble Park, which proved no match for the all-conquering Tigers on Saturday. After winning the toss and sending Noble Park in to bat, the Werribee bowlers wasted no time getting on top. The combination of Heath Pritchard (3/18), Jonathon Burton (2/14) and Jake Purton (2/29) were outstanding with the ball ensuring a constant flow of wickets was coupled with a slow run rate. Against tough opposition, Johan Vorster was the pick of the Noble Park batsmen with 27. However, with no-one able to kick on to a big score, the Tigers were set just 122 for victory. The total looked thin on paper and that is exactly what it proved to be. In reply, Werribee never looked in danger as Matthew Dean and Shaun Dean made light work of the chase. The pair added 117 for the second wicket to cruise to victory after just 33.5 overs. Both batsmen finished not out with Matthew on 55 and Shaun on 42. Noble Park’s only wicket was taken by Anthony Salomon who finished with 1/16. Tigers’ captain Shaun Dean was rapt with his side’s performance across the board against quality opposition. “We were very happy to win by nine wickets against what we think is very good opposition,” he said. “I think they were fourth with only two losses so we really set ourselves for this game. “We are quite an even team and every talk I have with the team I reiterate that we have no superstars. Our batting bats right down to nine or 10 and our bowlers, we have four or five who can do the job along with two spin bowlers. “That is what we pride ourselves on. We don’t consider ourselves to have superstars or world beaters but we have a very good cricket side which is very even.” The weekend’s result sees Werribee remain the only undefeated side in the VSDCA East/ West competition with a perfect 8-0 record. The Tigers will look to keep the hot streak going this weekend when they come up against ninth-placed Croydon.

overs for the day which is just an outstanding effort. It just shows his quality as a bowler. “I would have thought 250 to 270 is probably par at that ground. The deck was quite tacky and offered us a bit early. Having them 4/50 we wanted to strive to contain them to under 200. At the end of the day, rolling them for 227, you would take that.” With 14 overs left in the day’s play, Russ and Anthony Barton padded up for the Bulldogs and raced to an impressive start. The pair added 52 for the first wicket before Barton was removed by Fawad Ahmed for 23. Footscray will resume its innings this week at 1/56, needing a further 172 to claim victory. Russ said batting in partnerships and the battle with Ahmed would be the key to chasing down the remaining runs this week. “I think if we can starve him (Ahmed) from wickets, that is probably the biggest one,” Russ said. “He is a very good bowler. If we can stop him from getting wickets as much as possible and score at the other end, that will be a key. “The biggest thing is just partnerships. If one bloke in the top five can go on and get a 70 or an 80 at least, that should be enough to see us through.”

GRAND United has finally succumbed to its first loss of the summer, going down to West Newport in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf competition on Saturday. Choosing to bat first at West Newport’s Loft Reserve, Grand United recovered from a dicey start to reach 7/186 in the one-day clash. At 2/2 the visitors were in serious trouble, but a very solid showing from the middle order ensured Grand United a respectable final total. West Newport then made much better use of the wicket, with opener Ross Cassidy setting the tone from start to finish, scoring an unbeaten 63. With the support of skipper Trent Jones (50) batting at number four, West Newport reached its target in 35 overs, ending the game at 4/187. Other winners in the A Turf competition on Saturday were Williamstown Imperials, Williamstown Colts, Melton Centrals and Bellbridge. FOLLOWING the appointment of senior interleague head coach Brett Jacobs the Western Region Football League has announced two new members to join the coaching committee, with league great Steve Thom appointed as chairman of selectors and Altona Vikings reserves coach Aaron Freeland as assistant coach. With nearly 60 years of experience in the WRFL between the three men, the league is in good hands when it comes up against the Southern Football League in the 2014 AFL Victoria Metro Championships held on March 29 at Visy Park. With over 1500 senior players registered in the WRFL in 2013, the selection process for the final representative squad will not be an easy task. “Obviously there are a lot of great players in the league, but what we’re looking for are players who are 100 per cent committed to the team and who share the belief that it is a privilege to wear the WRFL jumper and represent football in the West,” Thom said.

Sport In the

Doghouse KEVIN HILLIER

It pays to promote HAPPY New Year. 2014 has come along very quickly and there is a lot on the sporting calendar for this year that excites me and I am sure it excites you. Cricket is heading towards the finals and Werribee Cricket Club is going well and is the only local club who has kept me informed of its progress so far this season. While I don’t want to start the year on a downer, I have to ask the question: What is wrong with other clubs in the area? You are doing a fine job of NOT promoting your sport and your club, please take a bow. Don’t whinge to me or ask me for publicity for an event in the future if that is your attitude. It only takes an email to remedy the situation. Make it happen. I AM excited, as are a lot of people in local footy circles, by the fact that a WRFL senior interleague side will be representing the West for the first time in over a decade at the Victorian Metro Championships on 29 March at Visy Park. The league has named a preliminary squad of 70 players from both Division One and Two players. One player who was not named was Shannon Broadbent of Deer Park. Social media went to town on Shannon and as is usually the case they got it wrong. The league thought Shannon was not going to play in the WRFL in 2014 so they did not include him in the squad. When they discovered that that information was incorrect they contacted him and he immediately committed to the squad. So the detractors on Big Footy and other social media can back off. My understanding is that Shannon is looking forward to the game and representing the WRFL.

Hoppers Crossing failed with the bat against Greenvale on Saturday. 107675

Scratching for wins HOPPERS Crossing is now facing an uphill battle to make the finals in Senior Division Turf Cricket after falling to loss number four for the summer on Saturday. The odds were stacked up against the Cats coming into their first oneday clash of the New Year away to Greenvale, and by game’s end the host showed just why it sits on top of the table at 6-1. Choosing to bat first at Greenvale Recreation Reserve, the Jets managed to slowly wrestle control of the

game away from Hoppers Crossing, recovering from 2/8 and then 3/14 to get to 4/64 with Jeremy Brown (70 not out) and skipper Jon Kent (17) in the middle. From there the wickets dried up for Hoppers Crossing as Greenvale’s middle order took charge, reaching 6/165 by the end of its 40-over dig. In response the Cats could never get going and had no answer Brown, who followed up his brilliant batting performance with four wickets and two maidens. Hoppers Crossing struggled for decent runs and failed to ever get

going in its chase, ultimately falling for just 116 in 34 overs. The Cats remain eighth on the table and will face St Bernard’s (one-dayer), South Caulfield, Old Mentonians and Bentleigh in its remaining homeand-away fixtures for the summer. Meanwhile in the VTCA’s North Division on Saturday, Laverton couldn’t get the job done at home to Royal Park Brunswick. The visitors were two-wicket winners over Laverton, who posted 6/159 after choosing to bat first in the one-day game. Chasing 160, Royal Park Bruns-

wick managed to get to 8/174 in reply. Werribee Centrals also started the New Year in defeat, going down to Taylors Lakes in the North A1 competition. In a game dominated by the bowlers, Taylors Lakes’ all-out 83 from 32.1 overs proved to be enough, as the Centurions faltered through their run chase to only manage 77 before losing their 10th and final wicket in the 26th over. Centrals will host Seddon in another one-dayer this coming weekend.

Giants coach sets big finals goal By ADEM SARICAOGLU WERRIBEE Giants coach Phil Balzer is not afraid to drop the ‘F-bomb’ on his playing group. While most coaches, no matter their game, loathe mentioning the word ‘finals’ so far out from the post-season, Balzer has made it clear he expects his Giants to be there later this summer in Division Two baseball. “In front of the boys last week I said the F-word, but there’s no reason we can’t make the finals given the games we’ve got ahead of ourselves now,” Balzer said. “And I don’t shy away from that with the players, either. If

they’re going to take it up, then they need to be talking about it. “It’s one of those unwritten rules in footy and other sports as well that you can’t talk about finals and it’s one week at a time and so forth. “But I think if you’re going to set goals and challenge yourself, well then you can be brave enough and stick your chest out and say ‘this is what we’ll do’ and ‘this is what we want to achieve’ and then go out there and get it.” Werribee is currently 9-5 coming into the New Year and should be able to secure a place in the finals if it can go above 500 in its remaining six regular season games.

Hoping his Giants can get there, Balzer has been keen to instil a competitive edge within his stocks that he hopes will prove handy come the postseason. “I want to talk about finals,” he said. “I want to get these guys mentally thinking about it so it perhaps brings on that extra pressure on them, which is what they’re going to have to deal with come finals time. “Pressure does build and increase in those games, so they need to be able to perform under that pressure.” Werribee’s season resumes this Sunday away to Moorabbin.

I AM really enjoying doing the SEN Cricket Show “Howzat” with Rodney Hogg, Smokey Dawson and Adam Dale. It has given me the chance to talk to some of my cricketing idols like Doug Walters, David Boon and Greg Chappell. We are on for a few weeks more so tune in Saturdays at 11am. Footy is not far away with the Bulldogs Family Day coming up on Sunday 9 February at Whitten Oval from 9.30am. WERRIBEE Cricket Club has started 2014 off in great fashion and are on track for a very successful year. The first X1 scored a comfortable win in the first game of the new year, with the Dean brothers starring with the bat. The best news for the club is that all four senior sides are in the top four and bound for finals. The club is holding its Pink Stumps Day for the McGrath Foundation on 22 February and will be hosting a Ladies High Tea on the day from 2pm to 5pm. If you would like to donate any goods or services to the auction on the day or if you would like to attend contact Deb Dean deeno@bigpond.net.au. The club is organising a special guest speaker for the high tea so it should be a great afternoon. I AM intrigued to know if local pubs and clubs have experienced a lift in the interest and involvement in darts in the last few weeks on the back of the International Darts Competition held at Etihad Stadium last weekend. The Wizard of Oz, Simon Whitlock (a Bulldogs supporter) was in town and the stadium hosted about 8000 fans nightly to witness the competition. I am intrigued to know if you think it is a legitimate sport or just a pastime and whether you would go to an event in the future more than once. I wonder if this is a novelty event?

Star trio for Willi WILLIAMSTOWN has added even more young talent to its 2014 playing list. Isaiah Miller, Michael Gibbons and Reid Adams will line up at Williamstown next year, joining the club from Bendigo Pioneers, Murray Bushrangers and Geelong Falcons respectively. The star trio also played a mixture of representative, VFL, school and senior football last year. Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon was delighted to secure the talented crop. “They’re three really exciting signings for us,” Dixon said. “All three players bring different qualities and traits but we’re delighted to have them on board. “Isaiah Miller has obviously

been extremely highly rated having been selected in the AIS Academy and for one reason or another didn’t get drafted. We’re looking forward to really working on aspects of his game and hopefully putting his name back up in lights in 12 months’ time. “Michael Gibbons has been one of the most prolific ball winners in the country in his age bracket in the past four years. “Reid Adams joins us from the Falcons and we think he is a really nice prospect. He is a great size for a modern midfielder and averaged good numbers in the TAC Cup this season.” Miller, Gibbons and Adams join a host of off-season recruits at the Seagulls including Sean Tighe, David Fahey, Brad Man-

gan and Scott Clouston. The Seagulls have also wasted no time finding a replacement for gun ruckman Cameron Wood who was rookie listed by Carlton. Williamstown signed 207cm giant Michael Sikora from the Essendon Football Club. Seagulls’ CEO Brendan Curry said he thought it was a good fit for both player and club. “After Cam Wood was taken by Carlton our need for a ruckman obviously increased,” he said. “Michael was looking for a new home and an opportunity to come in and continue his development. We think it’s going to be a good fit and we’re excited about what Michael will be able to provide us.”

Roadstar Holden’s back on Trax By MURRAY HUBBARD IF the small SUV segment was hot before, it’s now sizzling. The two latest entrants in the competition add style, and a lot more, to the compact SUV offerings - those being Nissan’s new out-there Juke and Holden’s nicely styled Trax. Our test car for the week was the new Holden Trax in its highest specification level, the LTZ. It comes comes standard with a six-speed auto transmission. In our launch story of this vehicle we highlighted the MyLink media system that Holden is running out across its range. This is a clever system that marries Android and iPhone mobiles with embedded apps in the MyLink system that include satellite navigation, music libraries, radio stations - a raft of mobile telephone apps that run through the car’s screen. Some Gen-Ys may even buy the car because of the embedded technology rather than focusing on performance or styling. That’s the changing face of buyer needs and wants. Though it does minimise driver inattention to some extent, the dangers still exist of drivers not concentrating on what they should be doing when behind the wheel - driving. The compact SUV segment has a range of designs from boring to brilliant with Trax sitting to the right of

centre as a well-styled SUV that exudes some style. While somewhat understated compared to out-there Nissan Juke, but artistic alongside the likes of Nissan’s other small SUV, Dualis and many others in the class. The GM Trax has styling cues that break up the boxy design with muscular treatments where they make a difference to eye appeal, namely the mudguards, bonnet and rear quarter panels. Trax has the Holden ‘family’ grille, which is prominent and has a shape that lends itself to an SUV. A feature of the Trax profile is the swept roofline - a design that nears perfection on Range Rover’s Evoque SUV. The other factor that young families like are high-seating position, not just for driving, but for ease of placing priceless cargo into capsules and baby seats. The interior of Holden Trax is basic although the layout is fine and some of the design makes it interesting - like the prominent air-conditioning vents on either side of the dash that protrude like Porsche 911 headlamps. The dash centre is dominated by the 7-inch screen that supports the MyLink system. However, the overall feel is of cheap grey plastics, even though the design and layout is functional. The driving position delivers good viewing and no one could complain

about seat comfort. The rear pew is not bad either although better suited to two adults than three. There’s a fold down centre armrest with dual drink holders and good leg room as long as the front seat passengers aren’t overly tall. The cargo area is usable for the weekly shopping or a couple of medium-size suitcases and the Trax has a 60/40 split rear seat that gives good versatality. The 1.8-litre engine was first used by Holden in the model year 2014 Cruze - Holden’s small four door sedan entry-level car. The engine develops 103 kW at 6300 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 3800 rpm. Combined fuel consumption is officially 7.6 litres/100 km from the engine with auto combination, which is exactly what we managed during our week-long test. Holden is now including IsoFix child seat restraint anchors across all new models and the Trax gets these. Trax comes with an Australasian NCAP five-star safety rating. Safety features include six airbags, rear view camera, rear parking sensors, stability control, ABS brakes, EBD, BA and ESP traction control. Holden is always good at tuning its cars for Australian conditions. Some of our roads are more thirdworld than developed world and suspension and damping settings can make a huge difference to ride and

Neat shape of the Holden Trax is sure to interest a lot of potential buyers. comfort levels for passengers. So the Trax underwent extensive testing and development for Australian roads and this shows in the ride and comfort levels, particularly over corrugated and pot-holed roads. It sits well on the roads and the suspension soaks up the hits, unlike, for example the new Nissan Juke which has suspension that is simply harsh on our worst roads. Trax is not the quickest car in the segment. The 1.8-litre four cylinder petrol is adequate in that it had no trouble matching the traffic around it, but it will not break any speed records. The six-speed auto is a bit pedestrian between shifts and when pushed the engine noise infiltrates the cabin.

When cruising the system is quiet enough. To arrange a test drive, visit Ballan Holden, 323 Princes Highway, Werribee, or call 9974 8888. Alternatively, visit Alan Mance Holden, 435 Barkly St, Footscray or call 9020 8537. Kevin Dennis Holden is at 272 Ballarat Rd, Braybrook. Call 8376 6790. Model range Trax LS 1.8-litre five-door hatch: $23,490 (manual), $25,690 (automatic); Trax LTZ 1.8-litre five-door hatch: $27,990 (automatic).

On the tail of smart move By EWAN KENNEDY

New features in 2014 Hyundai i40 include a powered tailgate

SOUTH Korean maker Hyundai continues to advance into the field of European technology, with several features in the just announced 2014 Hyundai i40 sedan and wagon being borrowed from the upmarket German marques. Chief among these is a smart feature that allows hands-free operation of the tailgate. This automatically opens the powered tailgate when someone with the car’s smart key enters the ‘detection zone’ (500 to 1000 mm behind the tailgate) and remains there for at least three seconds. So that no one is taken by surprise by the automatically opening tailgate, a buzzer sounds and the vehicle’s hazard lights flash prior to the tailgate opening. Operation of the Hyundai Smart Tailgate function can be cancelled at any time by pressing any button on the proximity smart key or it can be permanently turned off if you’re not keen on it. Features like Smart Parking Assist and Lane Departure Warning and Assist were already standard on the Hyundai i40 and this new tailgate opening system adds to the technology package. All 2014 models Hyundai i40 now have an all-new Drive Mode Select system that lets the driver to choose from Normal, Eco, or Sports mode to customise the drive ‘feel’ to best meet the environment. As the name suggests, ‘Normal’ mode is most suited for day-to-day driving, ‘Eco’ mode reprograms

automatic transmission shift points to achieve optimum fuel economy, while ‘Sports’ mode delays automatic transmission shift points and reduces steering assistance to achieve a sportier driving experience. Styling changes are minimal as the i40 is still relative new, but there are revisions to the look of the front. There’s a Euro style ‘shark fin’ antenna on i40 Tourer Elite and Premium models, as well as new alloy wheel designs. The 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels, on the i40 Elite and Premium variants respectively, now have a dark silver metallic finish. All i40 models have Bluetooth connectivity including audio streaming, as well as auxiliary and USB sockets. The Hyundai i40 Active has a single CD player, Elite and Premium have a six-disc changer with a more advanced audio system. Both systems can play MP3 and WMA discs. Elite and Premium models also use a proximity key with push button start/stop. Engine options are a 2.0-litre petrol or 1.7-litre turbo-diesel engine. The diesel is proving particularly popular, with peak power of 100 kW, and torque of 320 Nm between 2000 and 2500 rpm. The petrol engine has up to 130 kW of power, its torque peak of 213 Nm is a sky-high 4700 rpm, but it does have a good spread of grunt from about 2000 upwards performance is good. The entry-level Hyundai i40 Active is offered with either a six-speed

manual or six-speed automatic transmission; the i40 Elite and i40 Premium only come with the automatic. Hyundai’s iCare program minimises running cost: the first service, at 1500 km, is free, there’s capped price service for the first three years, a five-year unlimited distance warranty. Roadside assist is free for the first year on new vehicles. There’s even an owners’ website, a magazine and customer events. Model range Active GDI 2.0-litre petrol fourdoor sedan: $29,990 (manual), $31,990 (automatic); Active CRDi 1.7-litre diesel four-door sedan: $32,590 (manual), $34,590 (automatic); Active GDI Tourer 2.0-litre petrol fivedoor wagon: $31,990 (manual), $33,990 (automatic); Active CRDi Tourer 1.7-litre diesel fivedoor wagon: $34,590 (manual), $36,590 (automatic); Elite GDI 2.0-litre petrol four-door sedan: $36,990 (automatic); Elite CRDi 1.7-litre diesel four-door sedan: $39,590 (automatic); Elite GDI Tourer 2.0-litre petrol five-door wagon: $38,990 (automatic); Elite CRDi Tourer 1.7-litre diesel five-door wagon: $41,590 (automatic); Premium GDI 2.0-litre petrol four-door sedan: $42,990 (automatic); Premium CRDi 1.7-litre diesel four-door sedan: $45,590 (automatic); Premium GDI Tourer 2.0-litre petrol five-door wagon: $44,990 (automatic); Premium CRDi Tourer 1.7-litre diesel five-door wagon: $47,590 (automatic).
