Driven off the phone By CHARLENE MACAULAY NINE hundred Hobsons Bay drivers have been caught using their mobile phones while behind the wheel. Victoria Police statistics reveal that 897 drivers in the municipality were fined across the 2011-12 and 2012-13 financial years for using a hand-held mobile while driving. A further three learner drivers or P-platers were caught using any kind of mobile phone device. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said using mobile phones behind the wheel was a big distraction for drivers. “The recent increase in the penalty for the use of a mobile phone while driving is reflective of the danger this creates,” Mr Hill said. “But this is not just about the use of mobile phones, this is about all driver distractions. “Driving is a complex task and requires full concentration. Any distraction can impair a driver’s reaction time, ability to maintain speed and position on the road and general awareness of other road users. “Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds when driving at 40 km/h means you are effectively travelling blind for 22 metres.” Meanwhile, Victoria Police is

Five people died on Victoria’s roads over the official holiday season, including a 32-year-old Maribyrnong motorcyclist whose bike collided with a car, and a St Albans man that died in hospital on New Year’s Eve following a single vehicle crash. “Many collisions happen during the summer when alcohol, speed and fatigue combine in what can be a dangerous and often fatal mix,” Mr Hill said. “This is a traditionally high-risk time when people need to take extra care and attention.” • Cos ei De tures • Flexi le De tures • De tures NO DENTIST REFERRALS NEEDED • 1hr Express Repairs • Mouthguards • Repairs Reli e • Metal Fra e Plates NO WAITING LIST • Sot Li ers DIRECT TO THE PUBLIC

TWO up and coming junior netballers got the chance to show off their skills alongside Australian Diamonds netball champion Bianca Chatfield recently. Heather, 14 and Abigail, 11, Inglis from Altona were among 30 children chosen from around Victoria by their local netball club to take park in the Mac Pack Netball Clinic in Melbourne. The girls were chosen by the club to take part in clinic for

“displaying good sportsmanship and setting a great example for their peers throughout the season”. The clinic was run by Bianca as part of the McDonald’s Mac pack program, an initiative that encourages kids to live active and healthier lifestyles by getting involved in sport. During the clinic the junior netballers had the chance to perfect their offence, defence and shooting skills with guidance from the Australian great. The Melbourne Vixens play-

WESTERN Health will share in a $15 million State Government grant to boost elective surgeries across its three hospitals. Western Health, which manages the Sunshine, Williamstown and Western Hospitals, has received a $275,000 grant to perform an additional 120 nose and throat operations, which will predominantly be undertaken at Sunshine Hospital and cut waiting list times for children. Western Health also received a $338,000 grant in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Services, which will provide 100 patients on the Western Health elective surgery waiting list with the opportunity to have their surgery at an earlier time at Bacchus Marsh Hospital. The types of surgery to be performed in partnership with Djerriwarrh Health Service include orthopaedic, general, gynaecology and ear, nose and throat surgery. Figures from the Victorian Health Services Performance Report reveal that Western Hospital’s elective surgery list has almost doubled in the past year, with more than 2000 patients waiting for a variety of operations. “Western Health is extremely pleased to have received two additional funding packages for elective surgery to treat patients between January and June 2014,” Western Health Acting Executive Director of Operations Claire Culley said.

Local car pledge AN elected Labor Government would immediately mandate the purchase of locally made Toyotas - where a fit for purpose vehicle was available - by all Victorian Government departments and agencies. In a pitch to Altona-based workers in the lead-up to this year’s crucial State election, the Member for Altona District Jill Hennessy said the move would help protect Hobsons Bay workers and the future of the Toyota plant. “Victorian Labor cares about the future of the vehicle manufacturing industry locally and about the future of Toyota,” Ms Hennessy said. “Governments must support vehicle manufacturing workers and their families like those at Toyota, not turn their backs and do nothing,” she said. Just prior to Christmas, Holden joined Ford in announcing the end of locally manufactured vehicles. But the move was criticised by the State Government. Minister for Manufacturing David Hodgett said: “Our Government already has a buy-local policy in place where all Victorian Government departments and agencies must buy locally produced cars unless there are special requirements for vehicles which cannot be met locally. “As a result, 98 per cent of the Victorian passenger fleet is manufactured locally - produced by Toyota, Ford and Holden.” He said the Opposition, by endorsing Toyota, had turned its back on Holden and Ford workers.

Good health report card WILLIAMSTOWN Hospital has improved its performance despite an increase in patient admissions, according to a new Government report card. Health Minister David Davis last week released the latest Victorian Health Services Performance data, for the three months to the end of September. The report stated that Williamstown had admitted 2082 patients in the three month period, up from 1975 in the previous three months. It also completed the transfer of 100 per cent of patients who arrived

at the hospital in an ambulance in the September quarter within the target of 40 minutes, up on its 98.7 per cent transfer rate in the September 2012 quarter and considerably better than the state-wide benchmark of 90 per cent. The hospital also treated 100 per cent of Category 1 emergency patients immediately on arrival and 99 per cent of Category 2 patients within 10 minutes of arrival - up from 93 per cent in the September quarter, and beating the state-wide target of 80 per cent. Emergency departments across

the State saw 393,824 patients in the September quarter, up by more than 14,500 on the patients seen a year earlier. Most of the increase (14,220 patients) were Category 2 and 3 patients. “These indicators all show a pleasing improvement in the way our hospitals are providing treatment to emergency department patients,” Mr Davis said. “Our hospitals are treating more emergency patients than ever before, and treating them in a more timely and efficient manner.” The number of elective surgery

patients waiting for their operations at the end of September has fallen by almost a thousand on the previous three months. The number of waiting list patients given their surgery over the same period increased by almost 2,000, from 39,992 to 41,863. Mr Davis said all the Category 1 elective surgery patients received their operations within the benchmark 30 days, half of them within 12 days. Public hospitals admitted 389,456 patients in the September quarter, up from 372,696 in the same quarter in 2012.

Volunteer Olly gets to lead by example By NICOLE VALICEK PROLIFIC lobbyist and volunteer Olly Tripodi was voted as MTV Movement’s inaugural Millennial Leader recently. Australia’s Millennial generation (born 1982 - 2003) voted 21-yearold Olly from Williamstown as their Youth Parliament trailblazer. The movement aims to highlight issues that matter to young people and to lead social action to improve the future of Australia.

Olly was voted above five other final candidates nationally, and will be ‘in office’ until the UN International Day of Democracy on November 14, 2014. “I’m absolutely overwhelmed to be representing and advocating for the beliefs of young people,” Olly said. “I don’t think there has been an opportunity of this magnitude to make real change in Australia in our generation.” “Now is the time for the hard

work to prepare myself for the next year. My first step is to listen carefully to what young people are saying.” Olly is a Leading Taskforce Member of Youth Parliament, was a candidate in the most recent municipal elections and has volunteered with the YMCA on youth and Indigenous programs, Volunteering Victoria and World Challenge. “There has never been a generation like ours that is so active, so passionate, inspiring and inspired.

This movement competition is proof of that,” he said. As the Millennial Leader, Olly will receive things money can’t buy. These include access to a “Brains Trust” of inspired thinkers and leaders; unique experiences - like being hosted by the House of Representatives at Australian Parliament House in Canberra - and broad exposure on MTV outlets and through other channels.

Riders bear the brunt Off-leash trial underway By CHARLENE MACAULAY MOTORCYCLISTS across Hobsons Bay are getting more accident prone. That’s the message from RACV, with insurance figures revealing a 400 per cent jump in motorcycle claims over 12 months. In 2011, motorcyclists across the municipality made one insurance claim. In 2012, the number of claims jumped to five. The trend has been replicated across the West, with an 89 per cent increase in motorcycle claims from 36 to 68. The RACV paid $5300 on average per motorcycle insurance claim in 2012.

RACV general manager of Insurance Paul Northey said the surge in claims was despite a modest 2.6 per cent increase in the number of motorcycles registered on Victorian roads in 2012. “Motorcycle-related incidents are more likely to occur in areas which typically carry large volumes of traffic, such as inner-city Maribyrnong ... or fast growing Wyndham,” Mr Northey said. “As in previous years, RACV Insurance’s analysis shows motorcyclists are most likely to be involved in a collision between 10am and 6pm.” The RACV data show motorcycle claims during the past

year were most commonly reported as the result of a motorcyclist losing control, especially in the wet and on corners, or being hit by another vehicle.” Mr Northey encouraged motorcyclists to be constantly aware of the road and traffic conditions and potential hazards such as blind corners, crests and intersections. “It is also important that all road users be conscious of others around them, particularly when turning, overtaking and changing lanes.” TAC figures show that of the 282 people killed on Victoria’s roads in 2012, 41 were riders and passengers of motorcycles.

HOBSONS Bay City Council is currently undertaking a dog off-leash trial at Lynch Road Reserve, Brooklyn. The entire reserve area will be designated for off leash dog walking for a period of six months until June 2014.

Residents are reminded to collect and dispose of dog litter responsibly. Owners are also asked to keep their dogs under effective control at all times. The council is interested to hear the views of residents prior

to making the area a permanent off-leash zone. If you have any questions or comments regarding the trial during this time please contact the Council on 9932 1124 or email recadmin@hobsonsbay. vic.gov.au

Floral beauty in Altona A FUN and challenging course for students to get a taste of Botanic Art using pencil and watercolour is to be launched in Hobsons Bay. Talented artist Stefan Gevers will teach students the finer art of working with plant life and flowers. The lessons will be suitable for beginners who wish to be introduced to botanic art and for the more experienced students to try out a new medium. The focus will be on developing good observational drawing skills by exploring and

studying the Botanic Art subject. “It attracts a lot of people who are interested in watercolour and are attracted to working with plants and plant life,” Mr Gevers told Star. “Some are architects, some are gardeners who want to have a go at watercolour.” Mr Gevers said students will learn how to interpret and represent what they observe in front of them and gain confidence in their ability to use pencil and watercolour to create a botanic work of art in a relaxed shared environment.

1055179-47-12

Mr Gevers is a professional exhibiting artist with more than 20 years experience. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and is a qualified teacher. The classes will be held at the Louis Joel Arts and Community centre in Altona and run for 8 weeks, every school term, during Thursday evenings and Friday morning and afternoon. The next term will start on 6 February. For more information visit the website www.botanicartclasses.com.au or contact Mr Gevers on 0431 828 402.

Laverton pool upgrade HOBSONS Bay City Council will refer $300,000 in the capital works program to the 2014-15 and 2015-16 budgets to address priority works for the Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre. These works include up-

grading the toilets and changing rooms. The facility provides learn to swim programs and aquatic exercise classes for the local community. The building is more than 40 years old and the council has

agreed to look into future options for the site and facility. As a significant capital investment would be required to upgrade the building to commercial standards, the council will investigate alternative options.

Dr Andrew Kapsis with Haku the puppy at Lort Smith Animal Hospital 112627 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

Dog virus alarm By YASEMIN TALAT PUPPIES in the western suburbs are falling victim to the deadly parvovirus following a spike in cases referred to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in recent months. Sunshine, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee have all been named as hotspots for the infection, which has seen 34 cases admitted in the last three months and five last weekend alone. Head Veterinarian of in-patients at Lort Smith, Dr Andrew Kapsis said it was essential to vaccinate puppies against such deadly viruses and ensure the full course of vaccinations was completed. “This is a serious disease,” Dr Kapsis said.

“Without treatment about 95 per cent of infected dogs will die and even with treatment about 30 per cent won’t make it.” Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that is spread through the faeces of infected dogs and can survive in the environment, such as local parks, for many months. “You don’t need to have direct contact between dogs for the virus to spread,” Dr Kapsis said. “It can be transmitted through contact with contaminated faeces in the environment, on contaminated shoes, clothing or other objects, such as balls.” Dr Kapsis said the symptoms of parvovirus would start showing within two to seven

days and may include pets losing appetite, becoming lethargic and developing vomiting, profuse bloody diarrhoea and dehydration. He said severely affected dogs could go into shock from dehydration and sepsis, which often resulted in sudden death. Dr Kapsis said treatment for parvovirus was also expensive, due to the need for intensive care and isolation required during a lengthy hospital stay. “I can’t stress strongly enough the importance of protecting your dog against this horrific disease,” Dr Kapsis said. The Lort Smith Animal Hospital is Australia’s largest not for profit veterinary hospital and provides discounted vaccination rates.

Comedians towelling it up By XAVIER SMERDON A WYNDHAM Vale comedian is getting ready to conquer the world after being one of only three Australian acts invited to perform at an iconic festival in San Francisco. Mark Samual Bonanno is one part of the four man comedy troupe, Aunty Donna, who next month will be flying to America to perform at the SF Sketchfest. Along with Tommy Dassalo and Wil Anderson, they are the only Australian comedy acts performing at the festival. Not long after they will be

heading off to Scotland to perform at the world’s largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. To help them pay their way to both comedy events and possibly kickstart an international career, they are selling limited edition tea towels with their pictures on them. Mr Bonanno told Star that his dream was to be able to take Aunty Donna around the world. “I was doing an acting course in Ballarat and even then I didn’t think I wanted to be a performer, it was just something that happened,” Mr Bonanno said.

“The plan at the time was to get through the course and then just become a writer but about three weeks into it something just clicked and now this is what I want to do.” Aunty Donna started gaining international fans after posting their comedy routines on YouTube, where they have since received over 300,000 views. After one of their skits was shared by a fan on reddit.com, an American website, they received 160,000 hits overnight. For more information on their shows and how to buy one of their fundraising tea towels visit www.auntydonna.com

Jason Hare with a photo of his son Jordyn. 112570

Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

Remembering Jordyn By XAVIER SMERDON WHEN Werribee teenager Jordyn Hare passed away last year, it was the worst time of his father Jason’s life. “The fact that he passed away unexpectedly hit me really hard,” Mr Hare said. But almost one year later to the day, Mr Hare is hoping to use his son’s short life as a source of inspiration to others. Jordyn was just 18-years-old when he passed away following an epileptic fit. Next month his family and friends will gather to pay tribute

to him while also raising money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria. The event, Remembering Jordyn, will be a showcase of the entertainment industry, which Jordyn was starting to break into before his death. Mr Hare said one of the most difficult things about his son’s passing was telling his two other young children. “We all had moments of weakness in 2013 but now we are trying to make 2014 a more positive year,” he said. “Life is short and epilepsy

is one of those afflictions that strikes randomly and all too often very tragically. “You can either crumple yourself on the floor and disappear or soldier on.” The Burnside father said since he started planning the event in July last year there had already been a more positive feeling amongst his family and friends. Remembering Jordyn will be held on 7 February in North Melbourne. For more information visit www.oztix.com.au

Luke Marinelli was one of 100 people to receive a Chancellor’s Scholarship. 112710 Picture: CONTRIBUTED

High achievers rewarded By CHARLENE MACAULAY UP TO 100 new Victoria University students will benefit from a special new scholarship in 2014. For the first time, VU has offered Chancellor’s Scholarships to high achieving students who attained an ATAR over 90 in 2013 and listed VU in their course preference list. The scholarship offers recipients an annual grant of $5000 for the duration of their course, as well as individual mentoring from business leaders, an internship, participation in a leadership program and invitations to university-sponsored events. Students maintain their

place in the Chancellor’s Scholar program as long as they maintain full-time enrolment and achieve an average of 70 per cent throughout the course. St Bernard’s College student Luke Marinelli was one of the lucky ones to receive a scholarship after scoring an ATAR of 93.3 last year. He will start a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences this year in a bid to become an osteopath. VU was his first preference. “Always at the back of my mind, I really wanted to get that scholarship but didn’t know whether or not I would get over 90,” Luke said. “When I was finally offered it, it was big.

“I was interested in sports science and I looked at chiro and physio and found that a related job was osteopathy. “I thought that sounded cool so I read and researched it, and thought it was the path I wanted to take. It’s a five-year course, I hope I can tough it out and get there because it will set me up a lot.” VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins added: “Victoria University is committed to excellence, and rewards and recognises the efforts of high achieving students. “These scholarships complement the Achievement and Access scholarships we offer at the university.”

Fun and thrills on the big screen THIS year brings another crop of wacky and wonderful films at the box office. The new releases out this month promise to take viewers on another journey of love, laughter, excitement and drama. Inside Llewyn Davis is a drama directed by brothers Ethan and Joel Coen about a singersongwriter who navigates New York’s folk music scene during the 1960s. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Oscar Isaac, John Goodman and

Garrett Hedlund and boasts a rich soundtrack of folk classics. Inside Llewyn Davis is due to be released on 16 January. Action fans will enjoy Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit for a bit of high octane entertainment. The story is about Jack Ryan, a young covert CIA analyst, who uncovers a Russian plot to crash the US economy with a terrorist attack. Actor Chris Pine plays the lead while Kevin Costner, Kenneth Branagh and Keira Knight-

The much anticipated Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Wolf of Wall Street also hits the big screen this month. It tells the story of a New York stockbroker who refuses to co-operate in a large securities fraud case involving corruption on Wall Street, corporate banking world and mob infiltration. The biopic is out on 23 January.

For some comic relief Grudge Match should set off a few belly laughs with Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro playing a pair of ageing boxing rivals coaxed out of retirement to fight one final bout – 50 years after their last match. The two old dogs will battle for supremacy in cinemas 23 January. Visit www.yourmovies.com. au for more movie releases and trailers.

Star… Connecting people with the local sport they love.

The Magic is back By ADEM SARICAOGLU ALTONA Magic has re-instilled its faith in Pece Stojevski after a promising 2013 season in State League One football. Magic confirmed Stojevski as its senior coach for 2014 after he led a somewhat youthful side to a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge. Club football director Rubin Todrovski said Magic was happy to re-sign Stojevski after a year that had its fair share of positives. “The club put their faith in Pece and in what his ideas were and what sort of structure he wanted to put in place regarding the team,” Todrovski explained. “I could probably say that (last) year was a bit of a hit and miss, but because we’ve got a young side, you’ve got to expect that. “Overall, we can’t really say it was a good season or it was a bad season, but you could probably say it was fairly consistent.” Magic went undefeated for three rounds at the beginning of the year before dropping four of its next five encounters. Another undefeated stretch of nine games then followed for Altona, before local SL1 rivals Werribee City and Sunshine George Cross effectively knocked Magic out of the promotion race late in the season. Todrovski said injuries and a lack of scoring power up front cost his club through the middle portions of the season. “After three rounds we were on top, and I think up until round six we were sitting second or third, but then we lost Melvin Becket and a few others through injury - which kind of put us on a bit of a downslide,” Todrovski said. “We probably dominated most of those matches, but that’s football. If you don’t take your chances you get punished, and that’s the way it goes.” Last week, the club announced Robert Spasevski as its new under-20s coach. Meanwhile, Magic is also hoping to field a senior women’s side for the upcoming season.

Star trio to strengthen Willi

Crawford’s honour MURRAY Crawford powered to victory in the Footscray Cycling Club’s A Grade race on Saturday. With a small respite between Melbourne’s sweltering weather giving racers cool conditions and little wind, riders took advantage of the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU/FCC Sports Criterium Track in Hoppers Crossing. The A Grade race was down on numbers due to the Australian National Road Championships in Ballarat but four B Graders volunteered to bolster the numbers. Proving that last week’s win in B Grade was a sign of things to come, 49-year-old Murray Crawford surprised the bunch with a canny solo breakaway in the last three laps to take the win. The Altona North resident was impressed with the general attitude of the bunch. “They were all having a bit of a go, lots of attacks, and my-

self and Ben O’Leary had just had a few goes when I thought I might just slip away to the side,” he said. “I hoped a few might go with me but obviously they hesitated and let me get a bit of a gap. “Then I just set up a bit of a rhythm and was able to hold the bunch off so it was pretty good. “It’s good to go back to A the right way.’ Behind Crawford in the bunch sprint Wednesday’s winner Ben Ryan took second place, with Brett Hickford taking a strong third place. In other results for the day, Les Kennett took out the B Grade race from Richard Conejo and Antonio Marino. In C Grade, Gerard Zammit was victorious over Paul Rettke while Dennis Titto claimed victory in D Grade. Racing will continue for the Footscray Cycling Club this weekend.

WILLIAMSTOWN has added even more young talent to its 2014 playing list. Isaiah Miller, Michael Gibbons and Reid Adams will line up at Williamstown next year, joining the club from Bendigo Pioneers, Murray Bushrangers and Geelong Falcons respectively. The star trio also played a mixture of representative, VFL, school and senior football last year. Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon was delighted to secure the talented crop. “They’re three really exciting signings for us,” Dixon said. “All three players bring different qualities and traits but we’re delighted to have them on board. “Isaiah Miller has obviously been extremely highly rated having been selected in the AIS Academy and for one reason or another didn’t get drafted. We’re looking forward to really working on aspects of his game and hopefully putting his name back up in lights in 12 months’ time. “Michael Gibbons has been one of the most prolific ball winners in the country in his age bracket in the

past four years. “Reid Adams joins us from the Falcons and we think he is a really nice prospect. He is a great size for a modern midfielder and averaged good numbers in the TAC Cup this season.” Miller, Gibbons and Adams join a host of off-season recruits at the Seagulls including Sean Tighe, David Fahey, Brad Mangan and Scott Clouston. The Seagulls have also wasted no time finding a replacement for gun ruckman Cameron Wood who was rookie listed by Carlton. Williamstown signed 207cm giant Michael Sikora from the Essendon Football Club. Seagulls’ CEO Brendan Curry said he thought it was a good fit for both player and club. “After Cam Wood was taken by Carlton our need for a ruckman obviously increased,” he said. “Michael was looking for a new home and an opportunity to come in and continue his development. We think it’s going to be a good fit and we’re excited about what Michael will be able to provide us.”

Failed with the bat

FOOTSCRAY United went into Saturday’s North Division Turf Cricket clash with PEGS as a heavy underdog, and by game’s end the inevitable eventuated. It was a one-day clash that pitted top versus bottom, with United choosing to send PEGS in to bat first at Scovell Reserve. For a while that decision by United skipper Damian Grainger looked a winner, as Keilor Park-based PEGS faltered through the early portions of its innings and was in some trouble at 3/23 before Srinand Yalamanchili (57) and Adam Dudderidge (49) combined for 110 to restore balance in PEGS’s favour. An unbeaten 41 from Suranjith Silva late in the piece ensured PEGS a strong finish, setting Footscray United a formidable 214 for victory with three wickets in hand after 40 overs. Despite a solid 49 from Dadimuni Geeth Silva, United could only last 30 overs before losing all 10 wickets, making only 102 in the process. SUNSHINE United knocked off Point Cook in a top-of-the-table clash at Saltwater Reserve in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 competition on Saturday. After being sent in on the road, United posted a healthy 8/167 in its 40-over dig. In response Point Cook was poor, faltering to a measly all-out 91 from just 30 overs. Chris Kavanagh was the only Point Cook batsman to hit double figures, making 38 before getting bowled. In other results from the division, Newport-Digman was far too good for Deer Park Ardeer at John McLeod Reserve on Saturday. After being sent in, Newport Digman posted a very healthy 5/202, before restricting Deer Park Ardeer to 113 in 36.2 overs. Meanwhile, Sunshine Heights remains in the top four after easily getting past Wyndham Vale at Ainsworth Reserve. Heights could only reach 160 in the first innings, but managed to restrict Wyndham Vale to 72, bowling them out in 25.4 overs.

Seven wickets: she’ll be Jake, mate By LIAM TWOMEY A SEVEN-wicket haul from gun quick Jake Haberfield has put Footscray Edgewater in the box seat of its Premier Cricket clash with Melbourne Uni. In the first match back from the Christmas break, Haberfield picked up exactly where he left off in the first half of the season, removing opening batsman Thomas Polkinghorne for a duck. That was only the beginning of the pain for the batting side though as the former South Australian proved a constant headache throughout the innings. Haberfield’s figures of 7/67 take his season tally to 34 at an average of just 14.15. The constant flow of wickets restricted Melbourne Uni to 227 from 72.4 overs. Mark Simpson was the pick of the batsmen with 61 while Daniel Hutton also made 38. For Footscray, the remaining wickets were taken by Hamish Winter-Irving (2/35) and Michael Kelly (1/33).

By LIAM TWOMEY A POOR batting performance cost Williamstown any chance of victory in its first Victorian Sub District Cricket Association hit-out of the New Year. Taking on the seventh-placed Roxburgh Park/ Broadmeadows, the Seagulls looked to have put a poor first half of the season behind them with a blistering bowling performance. Williamstown rolled the Falcons for just 149 thanks to outstanding spells from Craig Sheedy (4/18), Cain Speakman (3/30) and Mitchell Knight 2/20. Jedidiah Kanagasabapathy was the only batsman to get away from the Seagulls as he posted an impressive 78. Kanagasabapathy’s innings helped Roxburgh Park/ Broadmeadows reach 149 before the Falcons were bowled out after 44.2 overs. It may have looked like a small target on paper but it proved just the opposite for the Williamstown batting line-up. The Seagulls found themselves in immediate trouble when Sheedy was removed for just five runs by Bryce Preston. It wasn’t long before more breakthroughs followed, with the top order left in tatters. Matthew Dervan (5), Nathan Bratby (0) and Brenton Hodges (1) were all back in the sheds with the score at just 4/26. There was no coming back from the disastrous start for Williamstown as the Falcons’ bowlers took the momentum and ran with it. Roxburgh Park/ Broadmeadows ripped through the lower order to end the Seagulls’ innings at 59 after 19.5 overs. Grant Sandars showed some fight for Williamstown at the top of the order on his way to 16, while Nathan Hall was the only other batsman to reach double figures. Tristan Plunkett was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets. The result sees Williamstown on the bottom of the VSDCA ladder with just the one win for the season. The Seagulls will look to add to that tally this week against Endeavour Hills. In other VSDCA results, Altona went down to Oakleigh in a nail-biting clash. Altona set Oakleigh 189 for victory and looked in control with the score at 9/170. However, the Oakleigh tail was able to wag and reach the target in the last over of the day.

Jake Haberfield was in the wickets for Footscray Edgewater on the Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI weekend. 110197 Footscray captain Dean Russ was full of praise for Haberfield. “The big thing that surprises me the most about Jake is his ability to bowl long spells and maintain his pace,” he said. In his opening spell he bowled

12 overs on the trot and bowled 23 overs for the day which is just an outstanding effort. It just shows his quality as a bowler. “I would have thought 250 to 270 is probably par at that ground. The deck was quite tacky and of-

fered us a bit early. Having them 4/50 we wanted to strive to contain them to under 200. At the end of the day, rolling them for 227, you would take that.” With 14 overs left in the day’s play, Russ and Anthony Barton padded up for the Bulldogs and raced to an impressive start. The pair added 52 for the first wicket before Barton was removed by Fawad Ahmed for 23. Footscray will resume its innings this week at 1/56, needing a further 172 to claim victory. Russ said batting in partnerships and the battle with Ahmed would be the key to chasing down the remaining runs this week. “I think if we can starve him (Ahmed) from wickets, that is probably the biggest one,” Russ said. “He is a very good bowler. If we can stop him from getting wickets as much as possible and score at the other end, that will be a key. “The biggest thing is just partnerships. If one bloke in the top five can go on and get a 70 or an 80 at least, that should be enough to see us through.”

GRAND United has finally succumbed to its first loss of the summer, going down to West Newport in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf competition on Saturday. Choosing to bat first at West Newport’s Loft Reserve, Grand United recovered from a dicey start to reach 7/186 in the one-day clash. At 2/2 the visitors were in serious trouble, but a very solid showing from the middle order ensured Grand United a respectable final total. West Newport then made much better use of the wicket, with opener Ross Cassidy setting the tone from start to finish, scoring an unbeaten 63. With the support of skipper Trent Jones (50) batting at number four, West Newport reached its target in 35 overs, ending the game at 4/187. Other winners in the A Turf competition on Saturday were Williamstown Imperials, Williamstown Colts, Melton Centrals and Bellbridge. FOLLOWING the appointment of senior interleague head coach Brett Jacobs the Western Region Football League has announced two new members to join the coaching committee, with league great Steve Thom appointed as chairman of selectors and Altona Vikings reserves coach Aaron Freeland as assistant coach. With nearly 60 years of experience in the WRFL between the three men, the league is in good hands when it comes up against the Southern Football League in the 2014 AFL Victoria Metro Championships held on March 29 at Visy Park. With over 1500 senior players registered in the WRFL in 2013, the selection process for the final representative squad will not be an easy task. “Obviously there are a lot of great players in the league, but what we’re looking for are players who are 100 per cent committed to the team and who share the belief that it is a privilege to wear the WRFL jumper and represent football in the West,” Thom said.

It pays to promote HAPPY New Year. 2014 has come along very quickly and there is a lot on the sporting calendar for this year that excites me and I am sure it excites you. Cricket is heading towards the finals and Werribee Cricket Club is going well and is the only local club who has kept me informed of its progress so far this season. While I don’t want to start the year on a downer, I have to ask the question: What is wrong with other clubs in the area? You are doing a fine job of NOT promoting your sport and your club, please take a bow. Don’t whinge to me or ask me for publicity for an event in the future if that is your attitude. It only takes an email to remedy the situation. Make it happen. Andrew Dickinson celebrates a wicket with team mates during Saturday’s win over Westmeadows. 112648

Woodsmen in big win SPOTSWOOD kicked off the New Year in style in North Division Turf Cricket, smashing Westmeadows with an easy four-wicket win on Saturday. The Woodsmen kept Westmeadows to 7/165 before responding with a very healthy 6/226 in the one-day clash at Donald McLean Reserve. Spotswood captain-coach Andrew Dickinson was quite happy to resume the summer with a win against a fellow top-four hopeful. “Sitting seventh before the game, we were desperate for a win, so it’s

a big result for us,” Dickinson said. “It was a good, positive result, so we’re very happy with it.” Five of Spotswood’s eight bats fired on the day, with Ed Young’s 76 and Dickinson’s 50 leading the way. Opener Abhijeet Sharma and middle-order hitter Matt Leddin also proved handy in the middle, scoring 33 and 30 respectively. Dickinson said he and his team mates made the most of the favourable batting conditions on Saturday. “We went out with a positive mindset,” he said. “The wicket was very good and

the outfield was lightning quick, so to get 220-odd, it’s obviously a good score. “(It was) a very quick outfield and we were very pleased to get 200. “We haven’t scored 200 in a onedayer for a little while, so it was great to get that.” The Woodsmen came into the summer as one of the North Division’s hot favourites after coming down from the VTCA’s top flight Senior Division. However, Spotswood’s form has been patchy to date, only managing to collect two wins prior to Christmas.

Dickinson says his side’s start to the summer has been “a little bit disappointing”, but is expecting things to turn around in coming weeks. “We’ve had a couple of losses we shouldn’t have had or where we’ve been beaten by better performances, but we certainly feel we’ve got a very good side,” Dickinson said. “Hopefully, this is the start of us reaching our potential, so we’ll keep chipping away and see where we can land.” This weekend, Spotswood will host Royal Park Brunswick in another one-dayer before returning to red ball cricket away to PEGS.

Wolves share top spot on league ladder By ADEM SARICAOGLU WILLIAMSTOWN is well on track for back-toback pennants in Division Two Summer League baseball after knocking off frontrunner Springvale on the road on Sunday. The Wolves have now moved to 11-4 and share top spot on the ladder with Moorabbin, who beat Fitzroy 8-3 over the weekend. After a somewhat patchy start to the summer, Williamstown steadied in the lead up to the Christmas break, and has managed to continue in that manner so far this year. Club president and firsts player Ryan Camov was very upbeat in his assessment of the Wolves’ recent form following their impressive 9-2 win over Springvale. “We had a very slow start to the season and we didn’t play particularly good baseball, but we hit our stride in our last six games of the season before the break,” Camov said. “Now we’ve come back first game out, and we’re still playing that really good, quality baseball, with good intensity and good energy, and guys all across the board are contributing. “So we’re very excited about where we’re at.” The Wolves were dominant on Sunday with Josh Lee and Jason Lester both having a good day on the mound. With the bat Aaron Green was consistent, getting a hit from each of his four at-bats for the game. “We came back from the summer holiday pe-

I AM intrigued to know if local pubs and clubs have experienced a lift in the interest and involvement in darts in the last few weeks on the back of the International Darts Competition held at Etihad Stadium last weekend. The Wizard of Oz, Simon Whitlock (a Bulldogs supporter) was in town and the stadium hosted about 8000 fans nightly to witness the competition. I am intrigued to know if you think it is a legitimate sport or just a pastime and whether you would go to an event in the future more than once. I wonder if this is a novelty event? I AM really enjoying doing the SEN Cricket Show “Howzat” with Rodney Hogg, Smokey Dawson and Adam Dale. It has given me the chance to talk to some of my cricketing idols like Doug Walters, David Boon and Greg Chappell. We are on for a few weeks more so tune in Saturdays at 11am. Footy is not far away with the Bulldogs Family Day coming up on Sunday 9 February at Whitten Oval from 9.30am. Williamstown took on Springvale on the road on Sunday. 88832 riod and everyone was fired up and ready to go, and we had a really good energy and intensity throughout the whole squad,” Camov explained. “We played really well across the board, and all the guys did really well. “Our pitching was fantastic, our defence was

fantastic and we hit all through the line-up. “It was honestly just, across the board, a really good performance.” This Sunday, Williamstown will host Mulgrave, before going on another road trip to face Port Melbourne six days later.

I AM excited, as are a lot of people in local footy circles, by the fact that a WRFL senior interleague side will be representing the West for the first time in over a decade at the Victorian Metro Championships on 29 March at Visy Park. The league has named a preliminary squad of 70 players from both Division One and Two players. One player who was not named was Shannon Broadbent of Deer Park. Social media went to town on Shannon and as is usually the case they got it wrong. The league thought Shannon was not going to play in the WRFL in 2014 so they did not include him in the squad. When they discovered that that information was incorrect they contacted him and he immediately committed to the squad. So the detractors on Big Footy and other social media can back off. My understanding is that Shannon is looking forward to the game and representing the WRFL.

Families line the fence of the Werribee Racing Club for the Kids Day Out meeting.

Kids are favourites, of course, of course By LIAM TWOMEY THERE was plenty of action at the Werribee Racing Club on Sunday. As well as hosting some the best horses and jockeys from around the state, Werribee also held its annual Kids Day Out race meeting. In what were perfect conditions, racegoers of all ages were treated to a wealth of on-course entertainment and fun at the highly successful family day. While there were plenty of attractions off the course at the Werribee Racing Club, the ac-

tion was just as hot on the track with a seven-race card greeting punters. It was a great start to the day for those trying to find a winner with favourites dominating the early races. Malabar Man, Party Talk, Hard Stride and Kuaima took out the first four races on the card, all saluting at short odds. It wasn’t until race five that the bookies received some respite with Coghills Creek ($15.70), Bedouin Express ($12.10) and Tequila Queen ($22.20) taking out the last

three races. The Kids Day Out meeting continues Werribee’s busy season of racing with the club coming off Werribee Cup Day in mid-December. The 2013 TAB Werribee Cup was won by Pelicano. There will be no slowing down for racing in Werribee with the season now in full swing. The club’s next meeting will be the Australia Day Races on 26 January. Werribee will also host three meetings in March.
