Local sailors in race bid

By PAUL MILLAR A LOCAL crew headed by Sydney to Hobart veteran Jake Newman hopes to make a late bid to take on some of the best yachtsmen in the world at World Melges Championship.

There are already 26 entries to race the 24-footers on Corio Bay, with 11 international teams on the list, including one headed by a world champion.

Mr Newman, who has competed in world championships and raced from New York to London, said it would be great to have more local representation in the Melges.

Most of the Australian crews are from New South Wales with the only Victorian representative so far, Geelong entrant David Farrimond and his four sons, who will race the family boat Vitesse.

Mr Newman said he had a local crew ready and keen to contest the race in Geelong from 27 January to 2 February. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are trying to charter a boat that has been imported into the coun-

try, but it all depends on whether we can get a sponsor to finance it all,â&#x20AC;? Mr Newman said.

He said while some of the top guns in the world were heading to Geelong for the championship, local knowledge on Corio Bay would help lessen the gap. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we do manage it, then it will be a last minute effort, it all comes down to getting funding,â&#x20AC;? Mr Newman said.

Organisers said that world champion Bora Gulari from the United States was a confirmed starter.

Many of the teams will contest the national championships prior to the international contest.

Crews from around the world will start arriving in Geelong from next week, with confirmed entries including Swiss, Italians, Americans, Germans, Japanese, Hungarians and Canadians.

Organisers believe the Melges teams alone will inject $1million into the local economy.

The championship is part of the Festival of Sails, which is estimated to boost Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coffers by up to $10 million.

LORNEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S angling community is up in arms over plans to rebuild the resort townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Point Grey pier precinct.

The plan - which would see two ageing buildings housing a restaurant, fishing co-op and angling club redeveloped into a single structure - has been put up by the Great Ocean Road Coastal Committee.

But a Save the Lorne Aquatic and Angling Club protest group is mounting a strong campaign to overturn the plans and keep the existing buildings on their present locations and create a Lorne heritage centre.

Hopes high for thong show hit

By PAUL MILLAR AN Australia Day thong contest might not have the same ring as the Eurovision Song Contest but organisers hope it will have more appeal to local beach goers.

The Australia Day Thong Challenge pits state against state in a contest where swimmers link hands on board inflatable thongs on the water in a bid to gain a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The event also raises much needed funds for nippers pro-

grams at surf life-saving clubs.

Torquay aims to push for the title this year, with Western Australia holding the crown with 2093 swimmers in the water last year.

David Nankervis, the head of the Torquay SLSC Nippers program and Victorian lifesaver of the year, said the challenge was a fun day out.

It costs $30 to register for the challenge, with thong manufacturer Havaianas supplying the inflatables, of this $10 goes to fund the nippers’ program.

“It happens on Australia Day and I can think of no better place to be on Australia Day than down at the beach,’’ Mr Nankervis said.

The challenge has run for nine years and has raised $250,000 for the nippers nationally.

The contest will take place across five beaches on Australia Day with swimmers gathering at North Bondi (NSW), Torquay (VIC), Glenelg (SA), Mooloolaba (QLD) and Cottlesloe (WA).

It’s hot, but its been hotter by one

By PAUL MILLAR LOCALS might think they are doing it hard with the sweltering heat melting their ice-creams before they hit their tonsils, but earlier generations endured worse, without the luxury of air-conditioning.

Four days of take-your-breath away conditions might feel like a record breaking heatwave but as the old-timers would say “tell him he’s dreaming”.

Lindsay Smail, from Geelong Weather Services, said it will take something special to beat the ’fry an egg on the pavement’ conditions of January 1908.

“At that time we had 15 days, when the temperature hit 30 degrees or more, in that month there was a period of six consecutive days when it was 39 degrees or more and two days when it hit 44.2 degrees,’’ Mr Smail said.

He estimated during that six-day period the average maximum temperature was 42.5 degrees.

Despite the recent hot-spell he said that an abundance of good rainfall in the Otway Ranges during the year had provided good supplies for the catchments.

However, Geelong’s normal December rainfall was under average, as were the Bellarine Peninsula and Golden Plains.

December was fractionally warmer, just 0.2 degrees above the long-term 1903-2012 average.

The highest temperature was 40.3 degrees on 19 December.

In March last year, we had 11 days of 30 degrees or more during the month, with the hottest day recorded on 12 March, when the mercury hit 38.3 degrees.

The year overall was one degree warmer than the average of 14.5 degrees taken from 1903 to 2012.

Lift cage fight ban, says fighter Sotiropolous’ call was backed by Lara MP John Eren who said caged bouts would be safer for competitors and criticised the Government for failing to capitalise on a remarkable potential for major events sporting dollars.

Mr Eren attended a bout where two competitors fell through the ropes of a boxing ring because of the lack of a cage.

“This sport is not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s the fastest growing sport in world,” he said.

“People do this sport for various reasons, some girls for self-defence, some kids to do it to tackle obesity.

MMA is legal, but what’s illegal is the cage which makes sports safer.”

sports, recreation, and major events, said the Government had been advised by the Professional Boxing Combat Sports Board to lift the cage ban because of the “dangers of fighters falling through the ring and hitting their head on concrete floors”.

“The minister has two options: one is ridiculous, ban the sport altogether, which means it could go underground and criminal elements might take it over.

“The second is the sensible option, make it safe as you can and lift the ban. We need the economic and tourism benefits.”

GEELONG could cash in on a $45 million purse if cage fighting was legalised in Victoria, according to Geelong mixed martial arts pro George Sotiropolous.

The former UFC fighter and Australian Ultimate Fighter coach slammed opposition to the sport or cages as “ridiculous and outrageous”.

He said the State Government’s refusal to overturn boxing ring bouts for cages was unsafe, ineffective and outdated. The State Government has refused to fall in line with other states and give the nod to cages over boxing rings.

“MMA is a sport. It’s not illegal, immoral or wrong,” Sotiropolous told the Independent.

“Opposition to the sport or the

cage is ridiculous and outrageous.

Those who oppose it do so with irrational notions. It would be equally irrational to blame or associate the state or national road toll with the Melbourne Grand Prix.”

Sotiropolous said the potential benefits from MMA bouts, in the order of $45 million a tournament, “must be grasped, supported and leveraged for the community’s betterment”.

“I don’t think any person, institution, organisation or government can ignore that kind of capital,” he said.

Sotiropolous said Geelong had the resources to “accommodate this kind of event”.

“The impact on the community would be positive and would expose Geelong to the world,” he said.

Dimmeys staff face forced sale DIMMEYS Geelong staff face an uncertain future as administrators look to sell the budget retail chain after it sustained $3 million in fines for breaking safety laws.

The Geelong retail fixture for generations, presently sited in Little Malop Street, employs 10 people. Manager Simon Patterson said staff were hopeful the store would continue as a going concern.

The administrators – appointed voluntarily by Dimmeys – are examining the trading and financial position of the company but have said that, at this stage, all Dimmeys stores will continue to trade as normal.

The administrators will also be assessing the viability of the company’s business with a view to placing the company’s business and assets on the market for sale.

Richard Cauchi, Peter Gountzos and Michael Carrafa of SV Partners in Melbourne have been appointed as the administrators.

“At the moment, we’ve been told it’s business as usual,” Mr Patterson said. “We’re still hopeful.”

By NOEL MURPHY PORT Phillip Bay has long played a vital role to the life of Geelong and right now this striking image of its links, including via its Corio Bay arm, to Melbourne are taking pride of place on the other side of the bay.

Artist Jan Senbergs’ Geelong Road – a bird’s-eye view of the sprawling bayside city, western suburbs and the industrial heartland stretching out to meet the

outskirts of Geelong – is on show at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery.

The Sea of Dreams: Port Phillip Bay 1915-2013 exhibition features bayside links of towns from Geelong right around the bay by artists such as Moriac-born Streeton, McCubbin, Boyd and Nolan.

Dark, brooding images of Shell’s refinery in Geelong feature also but it is Senbergs’ 2004 work that gallery senior curator Wendy Garden said cuts “a tor-

rential swathe through the western coastal plains” adjoining the bay.

“The multi-lane highway gobbles up the rail line and subsumes the bay which almost waterfalls off the paper,” she said.

“The volume of speeding red, yellow, blue, green and white vehicles denote the often-preferred means of transport, especially for daily commuters.”

Disc golf slips into Barwon park’s fun

By PAUL MILLAR YOU can now slip a disc and enjoy the experience following the creation of a disc golf course in Geelong.

The first permanent disc course in the region has been created at the Barwon Valley Fun Park and will officially open on 25 January.

The man driving the project, Andrew Ferguson, said the sport was booming in Australia and was so entrenched in the United States that there were professional leagues.

“We have seen an explosion in

the sport in Australia over the past five years,” Mr Ferguson said.

Although in its infancy in Australia there are already state representative teams around the country with the national championships to be held in Geelong and at a temporary site in Drysdale between 25 and 27 April.

The discs used are more advanced than the Frisbees that you see dogs chasing in the parks and can be hurled with precision up to 120 metres.

Like golf clubs you have a selection of discs for each shot from putters to drivers and when you have mastered the art you can

even fade your shot around trees.

The ultimate aim is to fire your disc into a metal basket with a fountain chain hanging from a support pole.

An added bonus is that it costs nothing to play at the nine-hole course and being hit by a disc is not as painful as being downed by an errant golf ball.

Local experts from the Geelong Disc Golf Club will be on hand on the opening day to offer tips on putting and driving, with competition style discs available on the day for a gold coin donation.

Historic beer a Volum seller

By PAUL MILLAR BEER drinkers will be able to indulge in a taste of the past at the Great Australian Beer Festival with a local brewer producing ale from a recipe that dates back to 1928.

Gail Thomas, whose father Bill was the chief brewer at the historic Volum brewery in Geelong for 37 years, held on to his hand-written recipes and decided it was time to revive at least one of the brews.

“When you have that sort of history in your hands you should put it out there,’’ Ms Thomas said.

She contacted Luke Scott at Otway Brewing and he saw it as a real challenge to work off the old notes with their old imperial measures.

The chief brewer said he had to tweak the formula a little before he was satisfied with the taste, while at the same time retaining as much of the original ingredients and brewing technique as possible.

The result is the Volum Hop Beer, a mid-strength brew that was around at the time that a singer with the unlikely name of Engelbert Humperdink was top of the charts with Please release me.

The song could well be the catch-cry for the revived beer, which will be officially released at the beer festival at the Geelong race course on 1 February.

Up to 1000 numbered bottles will go on sale at the festival, making them possible collector’s pieces.

Although she is more of a wine drinker she was well pleased with the new version of the old brew.

Captain James Volum, a Scottish ship owner and master mariner, established the Volum Brewing Company at Corio Street in 1857 and it produced ales for Geelong, the western district and the Wimmera for almost 100 years.

Extend parking trial call THE head of the Geelong Region Retailers wants the decision to allow free weekend parking in the city to be expanded to include weekdays.

Hayden Spurling, a former mayor, said it was hard to determine if the initiative had been beneficial to retailers as Saturday was their busiest day and the car parks were always full.

“In my view it should be happening during the quieter periods, Monday or Tuesday or the full week,” Mr Spurling said.

“It’s got to be better than it was, weekdays has to be the next step, it has to come, if you try it on the weekend you do not have a real indicator,” he said.

He applauded the decision to allow weekday shoppers to have a 15-minute grace period after their meter had expired, instead of racing back to their cars in a panic. The City of Greater Geelong followed through on a pledge by new Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons to trial free parking in central Geelong in a bid to help revitalise the area.

The free weekend parking trial runs until the end of March. Time limits still apply.

The council has also changed one hour parking limits to two hours in central Geelong, excluding parking near the emergency admissions area at Geelong Hospital.

The question has to be asked irrespective of how unsavoury it might be: Does the judiciary seek to continue to hand down wet lettuce non-custodial sentences which green-light the likelihood of future offences?

Furthermore almost on a case by case basis defendant’s legal counsel claim all manner of nonsense that their client was traumatised from a young age by some de facto parentage, or that their client had a serious alcohol problem they had now commenced an intensive rehabilitation program to overcome.

All in all a cosy scenario not available to the afflicted or their remaining loved ones.

Fit, designer-clothed, young fellow in his late twenties was overheard saying, in a local TAB, that his tax free Newstart unemployment allowance of over $1000 a month was devoted exclusively to the four-legged lottery or punting on racehorses.

He confided to his amused mates that his sister charged him no rent and did not require him to contribute to the food bill and utility costs. “She’s got plenty”, he smilingly said.

No wonder he is not looking for any form of gainful or productive employment. He is not alone.

It can surely only be a matter of time before the Abbott government introduces legislation to limit the payment of unemployment benefits to 12 months, to those clearly in the prime of their (working) lives.

A similar policy applies in many comparable countries.

Drivers see red LIKE Susan Spokes (Independent, 12 January) I also have a clean driving record and have received a fine on this same intersection.

Making a right hand turn onto the Melbourne road from Bunnings I entered the intersection on a green arrow but was not able to get across because of a semi-trailer slowing down to also make the turn.

I was stuck on the intersection. Could not go back or forward until the truck made the turn.

I agree with Susan Spokes that we are not given enough time to make the turn on the green arrow.

I feel that Vic Roads just use this intersection to raise revenue.

I am now reluctant to use this Bunnings. Maybe if enough people complain about this intersection something may be done about it.

Intuitive twins harmonise best

BY MICHELLE HERBISON ALICIA Egan had been singing intuitive harmonies with identical twin sister Alanna for so long that she provoked surprise when she started singing with community choirs.

“When I started harmonising with other people, they’d say, ‘What are you doing crossing over into my line? That’s my part,’ and I realised we have a different approach to it which makes it a bit special,” the Melbourne-based songstress mused.

“Our harmonies are pretty unorthodox because we’ve been doing it for so long. We’ll swap parts without talking about it.

“We’ve just got that sibling tonal blend that you don’t really get singing with anyone else.”

Alanna and Alicia will perform their folk and jazz-infused original songs at Connewarre’s The Minya Winery on 1 February.

“We’ve been singing together pretty much all our lives. We used to sing for our toys,” Egan laughed.

The twins didn’t learn to read music until they studied music degrees at age 22, she revealed.

“We had a bit of catching up to do but it was kind of good because we already had our own

creativity and style before we got there and that just polished it up.”

Both now teach music parttime between touring around the country playing gigs and festivals.

Egan said having an identical twin to bounce ideas off was helpful in the creative process, each beginning their songwriting alone then sharing with the other.

Their new album, Twin Lines, was jazzier than their two previous folky records, she said.

Egan cited influences as “old jazz ladies” including Billy Holiday and Nina Simone and “amazing lyricists” such as Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.

“We like our lyrics and storytelling. We write about lots of different topics – things we’re finding are amusing us, troubling us, puzzling us…”

Double Trouble served as “a satire for twins everywhere”, Songlines, inspired by a Bruce Chatwin novel, explored indigenous tradition, and Blue Birthday was an alternative to sing when a birthday was not so happy, Egan said.

Hamlet in a time warp

By MICHELLE HERBISON GEELONG Botanic Gardens will experience a time-warp when theatre company Ozact brings Shakespeare’s Hamlet into the 1940s in an intimate outdoor performance.

Ozact artistic director Bruce Widdop told the Independent that setting the classic thriller in a more recent time with 1940s military and civilian costumes modernised the timeless storyline.

“The story of Hamlet was basically a state facing an invasion and in 1940 Denmark was invaded by Germany,” Widdop explained.

The casual performance would create a family-friendly picnic atmosphere within the natural environment of Geelong Botanic Gardens, moving between two locations over two hours.

“A lot of families come along with parents and kids.

People can bring some food and something to drink, their own folding chairs or a cushion,” Widdop said.

The young and the young at heart would revel in fascination watching the actors move in and out of character between their performance roles and duties including selling tickets and seating the audience.

“Frequently parents comment that it’s made Shakespeare understandable for the kids,” Widdop added.

Despite mostly performing Shakespeare works for nearly

two decades, this summer’s show would be Ozact’s first rendition of Hamlet, arguably The Bard’s most popular play.

“It’s the story of a young prince who is seeking love and justice and he’s driven to madness by the stifling world around him,” Widdop summarised.

“It’s full of suspense and surprise, and it has the most famous soliloquies of any Shakespeare play so there’ll be lots of phrases and words that people are familiar with.

“It’s got something for everyone – romantic moments, comedy, sword fights…”

The two-hour Geelong performance would represent a shortened version of the original four-and-a-half-hour play, reflecting a typical Sunday session in Shakespeare’s time, Widdop explained.

“In Shakespeare’s time, on Sundays they couldn’t start plays until 2pm because of church commitments. In winter in England it’s dark at 4pm so they had to cut it down.”

This summer’s 1940s theme would also fit with Ozact’s 20th anniversary plans in 2015 for a series of fort concerts around the country including at Fort Queenscliffe, Widdop added.

The centre is proud of all its student successes and would like to acknowledge the wonderful year by student Jessica Ford.

Jessica not only received 100 per cent for her grade four exam, but was also awarded the 12 and under adjudicator’s award at the Cecchetti Choreographics, received one of four medals in the Cecchetti Junior Encouragement Awards and won the under-12 Ballet Award at the Ararat Competitions.

Jessica was also chosen to receive the Vivien Williamson Encouragement Award as the Most Promising Dancer in the Ballet Section during the Warrnambool Eisteddfod.

Students have the opportunity to undertake examinations in the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus and perform in an end of year concert at GPAC. Expressions Ballet Academy offers two special pre-school programs: movers and shakers and pre-school ballet, developed to build self-confidence and selfesteem in the youngest dancers.

Pre-school years are the most magical time in a little dancer’s life and EBA teachers are committed to making a difference in student’s lives as they grow.

Many EBA students have suc-

cessfully auditioned for prestigious full time training programs such as Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, Ministry of Dance Melbourne and Patrick Studios Australia. In the past two years, five EBA students have been accepted into the Australian Ballet School.

THE second-generation Kia Cerato Koup arrived here in November 2013 adding some performance substance to its already sporty style in the form of an optional turbocharged petrol engine.

The all-new Kia Koup is larger in all exterior dimensions, both length and wheelbase increased by 50mm, height up by 10mm and width by 15mm.

Transmission options on both models are six-speed manual and automatic with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters fitted to the Koup Turbo.

Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is listed at 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres from the manual Turbo and 8.0 L/100km from the auto.

We used 8.4 L/100km during our test of the automatic Koup Turbo.

Despite its sleek styling there a surprising amount of space inside the Kia Koup.

It does have five seats but can realistically only cope with three children or two adults in the rear.

Rear headroom is borderline and any passenger over 1.7 metres in height should make sure they get the front seat.

Access to the rear seats is helped by the wide frameless doors although they do need caution when opening them in cramped parking areas.

One criticism from the previous model has been addressed with the addition of a handle at the top of the front seats that both folds and slides the front seat forward at the same time.

The maximum boot capacity space is 433 litres with a full-size spare wheel under the floor raising the boot floor although there are small storage compartments wrapping around the spare.

A 60/40 split for the rear seat can provide extra luggage room if needed.

As we’ve come to expect from Kia, the Cerato Koup comes wellequipped, with much of the equipment you find in a more expensive model as standard.

As well as the basic safety gear (ESP, multiple airbags, enhanced) this includes hill-start assist; emergency

stop signal; front and rear parking sensors; reversing camera with in-dash display; and front and rear fog lamps.

The Koup Turbo adds LED daytime running lights and rear combination lamps; projection type front fog lamps with LED surrounds; push button start; side skirt; alloy sports pedals; cooling glovebox; puddle lamps on the side mirrors; and 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inch on the Si).

Bluetooth telephone and audio streaming, unlike many others, is simple and logical to pair and operate helped by a colour touch screen.

At just 4.3 inches the standard screen is a bit tricky to use - a 7.0inch screen is available with the optional ($2200) Touring Pack that also includes satellite navigation, DVD player, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, clean air module and auto defog system.

The instrument cluster is neat and the dials are easy to read.

An information centre at the bottom of the cluster gives details of trips, fuel usage, engine temperature, distance to empty and doors open.

The steering wheel is tilt and telescopic adjustable and vision is good all-round thanks to the frameless door glass.

There’s minimal lag from the turbo engine and its wide torque range gives it a strong feeling.

We were impressed with the willingness of the automatic to change down a gear or two the moment the driver gives the message with their right foot pressure.

Handling is excellent and Koup coped well on the section of rural roads on our test route.

Kia Koup cruises comfortably at motorway speeds supporting Kia’s suggestion that Koup is more a grand tourer than a sports car.

A NEW wave of excitement and enthusiasm is flowing through the skilled technicians at Hunter Cuthill.

A group has just returned from experiencing top-flight factory training in the US and Sydney on BMW and Land Rover vehicles.

The week-long training upgraded the technicians on the latest technology coming through on the new models of both marques, including Mini.

Hunter Cuthill’s Adam Hunter says the training offered new knowledge to add to the extensive experience of the staff.

“The crew really appreciate knowing their stuff so they can work on customer’s cars to the best of their ability.

“While the technology is similar between vehicles of the same marque, the factory training enables us to ensure all vehicles are correctly diagnosed when they come into our workshop.”

The training complements the latest computer diagnostic equipment capable of diagnosing all systems on all BMW and Land Rover models, ensuring new-car warranties remain unaffected.

Hunter Cuthill is also the top option for Peugeot, Renault and Citroen owners as well as all Jaguar, Mini, BMW and Land Rover models.

Hunter Cuthill is the only service centre in Geelong outside of direct dealers to have the leading software and diagnostic equipment for these prestige brands.

The workshop also uses Castrol oils as recommended by Land Rover and BMW. Booking a service at Hunter Cuthill is now even more convenient, with the on-line booking service plus the availability of two courtesy cars.

IndySport Cats push for outright win GEELONG Cricket Club kicked off the new year in sensational fashion last Saturday, taking first innings points on day one of their two-day match against Greenvale Kangaroos.

Bowling first, the Cats struck early through Jake Reed (6/37), the paceman single handedly reducing the hosts to 4/18 in no time.

The Kangaroos staged a mini revival, but only a 48-run partnership for the 10th wicket saved them from total embarrassment, eventually being all out for 120.

Reed’s performance will surely thrust his name in front of state selectors.

With 46 overs still to play, Geelong cruised to 5/239 on the back of half centuries to Eamonn Vines (57) and Matthew Harrison (54).

With outright points looking a real chance when play resumes tomorrow, the Cats can really set up the second half of their season with a ruthless performance.

Geelong West has jumped right back into the mix, with a resounding win over East Belmont last week seeing them claw their way back into the top six.

Quality specimens offer fantastic summer fishing for the enthusiast On the

THE fishing has certainly hotted up this past week with anglers finding quality fishing to be had from both fresh and saltwater alike.

Some of the best fishing has been on the banks of the Barwon River, where redfin can be readily caught on lure with both soft plastics and hard bodied options working a treat.

Good catches of redfin are being hauled in all the way from Ceres to Breakwater. For the best results, fish the last two hours before dark.

Carp are another species available in numbers and while most of the captures have been by those using baits of bread or corn, keen fly anglers such as James Magoffin have had success on fly.

Carp are a challenging species at the best of times, made even more challenging on light fly tackle and long runs are to be expected resulting in many a break off.

Lake Toolondo has been the stand out fresh water venue for the past few weeks. Trout better than 2.5kg have been taken using all manner of methods.

Freshwater charter operator Trevor Holmes has this lake wired and has had little trouble getting clients onto top fishing. Mudeye has been the bait but Trevor’s expertise with soft plastics has seen him return with a number of magnificent sessions.

Saltwater fishing has been varied with some of the hottest action of the summer coming from the Corio Bay outer harbour. Harrison Reid fished the Hermsley spoil grounds on Saturday morning for a total of 17 snapper – all but two were retuned but those Harrison did keep weighed over 3kg each.

Also finding snapper action was James Arkinstall. Fishing soft plastics he caught and released a dozen fish between 50 and 60cms. Gulp minnows were the lure attracting all the attention.

ON THE FLY: James Magoffin with a pair of fly-caught carp from the Barwon River. 112934 Craig Forbes fished just off Bird Rock this week and had no trouble attracting garfish into his berley trail, with two hours of fast and furious action had on this quality fighting species. Craig also landed a number of whiting to 34cms and snapper to 45cms.

Kingfish have been sighted by many anglers over the past few weeks from close in to the Geelong waterfront. While proving to be difficult to catch their presence certainly makes for nervous times, especially when they harass one of your hooked fish.

Fishing soft plastics along the outer edge of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club retaining wall saw Paul Harrison having a ball catching a variety of species including snapper, trevalla, salmon and pike. All fish were caught on Gulp Turtleback Worms in the pumpkin green colour.

Of late I have seen few anglers trolling for snapper but one angler to embrace this method is Garry Malone. Trolling deep diving Rapala lures this week he had little trouble bagging out on fish to 3.5kg.

Garry has found the fish are readily available from the edge of the channel between Point Henry and Clifton Springs.

Casting jigs over the shallow grass beds near the Clifton Springs boat ramp Guy Welsh soon had his bag limit of squid to 900 grams. Guy advised all the better fishing has been coming at first light with small natural coloured jigs working best.

With settled conditions Paul Miller made the journey out to the 20-metre line off St Leonards before light hoping for a gummy shark, but no luck until 10am. With only one rod left in the water the reel screamed off and a gummy shark of over 18 kilograms was boated. Deciding to cast the rods back out again over the next hour another two gummies were caught and released all estimated at a similar size to the one kept.

Ben Mclean and Mick Moore worked hard for two dozen whiting just off Queenscliff. Fresh squid was the bait and the boys also mention that they

landed plenty of quality tommy rough as well.

Noel Batten fished the entrance to Swan Bay where whiting averaging 33cms were in good numbers. Moving out to deeper water he soon found better fish and returned with a dozen all over 40cms in length, again fresh squid was the bait.

Tye Marshall had the unusual delight of catching the same fish twice. Laying a berley trail near the Swan Bay entrance looking to catch one of the big flathead this area is renowned for he didn’t have long to wait before a rod folded with what was clearly a big fish.

Fifteen minutes later the huge flathead was at the back of the boat, but unfortunately a sudden lunge by the fish saw it caught up in the berley bag and the fish broke free.

Around 20 minutes later another fish was hooked and it was not long before it was boated and turned out to be the same fish as it had the lost hook still in its mouth. It weighed in at 3.75kg.

Trolling the deep water of the Rip Steve and Geoff Clarke had no trouble locating numbers of salmon. While most were around 1kg, by days end they did catch two of just over 3kg. It wasn’t until they returned to the boat ramp that another angler informed them the fish they had caught were in fact small kingfish and not salmon.

Offshore we have seen good numbers of shark, both blue and mako, with the latter the most sought after. Generally you need to fish in 30 to 50 metres of water to find the best results but be aware there are plenty of small couta resulting in many a bite off.

This weekend the tides are perfect late in the afternoon for anyone looking to fish soft plastics on snapper. Look to the outer harbour spoil grounds or close in to the Quarries, you can’t go past gulp minnows and worms at present.

Also we are still seeing great numbers of salmon from the rock platforms between Lorne and Apollo Bay. Lure is the method but do fish a couple of hours either side of the high tides for the best results.
