PEOPLE OF THE

YEAR

2015

Take a bow Noosa By JOLENE OGLE EACH year Noosa Today celebrates a local who has done outstanding work in the community to help make Noosa an even better place to live by naming a Person of the Year in the first edition back. But this year, we couldn’t possibly refine our celebration to just one

person. Throughout 2015 the Noosa community has shown unwavering support and empathy for locals who have fallen on hard times, are doing it tough, or simply need a helping hand and for this we are proud to announce the entire community as Noosa Today’s 2015 People of the Year. Noosa Today held two charity

drives in 2015 and both times we were overwhelmed with the support shown. In August, we called for donations of socks and jocks for the homeless and were inundated. The donations were passed on to the Nambour Community Centre for the annual Homeless Connect Day. Of all the donations available to the homeless on the day, the socks and

jocks donated by Noosa Today readers were the first to go, demonstarting the demand for clean underwear. In November, we called on the community to donate to the annual Noosa Today Christmas Cheer Campaign in aid of the Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade, who delivered much-needed hampers to 325 people doing it tough this Christmas.

Every year we are humbled with the kind donations that flow in for this drive – and this year was no different. Those who stepped up included Cooroy State School students Elizabeth Delley and Lauren Hewitt, who collected 540 books from their schoolmates to donate to the Christmas hampers. Continued page 7

2015 – THE YEAR THAT WAS

Tribute to the Anzacs THEY were bakers, clerks, coach drivers and farmers, who left their homes in Noosa Shire to set sail for a bloody war on foreign lands. They were the husbands, brothers, fathers and friends who would never return to sunny Noosa, would never see their family again and would be laid to rest in soils far away. From 1914 to 1918, townsfolk farewelled their brave men, many of whom were unaware of the horror that awaited them at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but were determined to fulfil their duty. Last year marked 100 years since Gallipoli, with Noosa

Today commemorating the occasion with a special Anzac edition published on 23 April to honour the local heroes who sacrificed so much to protect our country. The Noosa community came together to honour the memory of all who have served and the Noosa Heads Surf Club hosted a special on-beach service for Anzac Day that included a special monologue and a re-enactment of the landing of Gallipoli. Thousands of locals turned out to the special service, with many more honouring the Anzacs at a number of services held throughout the shire.

Betty’s burgers back BETTY’S iconic $1 burgers made a comeback in 2015 to help raise funds for local Ursula Lockwood, who has suffered from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for over 15 years. Back when Hastings Street was a dirt road and Noosa Woods was a caravan park, Betty sold her iconic burgers that today conjure images of sunsoaked days spend surfing the waves at Noosa Main Beach when food was cheap and the surf was good. More than a decade since Betty Wallace, 82, last flipped a burger, the food-van queen was back at Acres Juicebar on Saturday 14 February where more than 800 burgers were sold to raise $1800 for Ursula.

The end for bowls club MEMBERS of the Noosa Heads Bowls Club (NHBC) played their last game at the Noosa Junction site on Saturday 2 May. Club members gathered to play their final games on the greens and to commemorate the 45 year history of the club with an official closing ceremony that included speeches, presentations, afternoon tea and a ceremonial ‘last bowl’ by the longest serving member, former Noosa mayor Bert Wansley.

Some tears were shed but laughter also echoed over the greens as the members recalled some of the club’s finest moments and celebrated the lifelong friendships that had been formed. Members have continued to play the game they love at other clubs including Tewantin-Noosa, Coolum, Nambour, Cooroy and others, while the site lies dormant while a suitable development plan is created.

Legends hail surf status

The soldiers of the Cooroy District 1914-18.

ON FRIDAY 6 March, Noosa National Park was officially recognised as a National Surfing Reserve, ending a 16-month campaign to win Noosa the elite status. Surfing legends travelled far and wide, along with politicians and the local community to gather at the National Park to celebrate the prestigious awarding of the Surfing Reserve status. The fight for the honour was a hard slog, led by the unrelenting surfing legend and Noosa Today columnist Phil Jarratt and a team of dedicated locals. In his speech to the gathered crowd, Phil said the National Surfing Reserve status was something Noosa should be extremely proud of and it couldn’t have been done without the community and committee’s support.

Noosa Today columnist and long-time local Ron Lane helps to unveil the National Surfing Reserve plaque that sits proudly upon a rock at Noosa National Park.

Elmes defies political shift NOOSA MP Glen Elmes was among seven local members who held onto their seats following a shock State Election in January 2015. Queensland turned to a sea of red as voter preference shifted towards Labor, but the LNP secured a pocket of blue on the Sunshine Coast with all previous members retaining their seats. Following his win, Mr Elmes said many commitments from the previous LNP Government were now “out the door”, with the local member saying he would have to “start the fight all over again” in Parliament.

Mr Elmes’ announcement was met with disappointment, with Noosa locals hoping a pre-election promise to rid the Noosa River of rotting boathouses would be possible. Mr Elmes said the change of government meant he would have to start over again.

Right: LNP supporters Brad Smart, Jeff Page and Sam Scanlon with candidate Glen Elmes, second from left, at the Noosa Baptist Church polling booth.

Election race heats up firmed they would not stand again, ending more than 40 years in local government between them. Others nominations for the elections include current president of the Noosa Ratepayers Association Brian Stockwell, NPA secretary Ingrid Jackson, Cooroy RSL marketing manager Elaine Williams, local Ken Coleman, and USC lecturer Steven Boyd, with more announcements expected in the coming weeks. Candidacy announcements from Noosa Greens member Aaron White and ALP party member Mark Denham were met with mixed reactions from the public as their candidacy marks the entry of party politics into local government elections.

THE race for the 2016 local government elections to be held in March 2016 began early, with a number of current councillors announcing their candidacy. Cr Tony Wellington was the first to announce he will run for mayor in the elections, with Cr Sandy Bolton declaring she too will contest the mayoral seat and former Noosa councillor Ray Kelly also throwing his hat into the ring. Incumbents Frank Wilkie, Frank Pardon and Joe Jurisevic have announced they will run in the elections too as councillor candidates. After many years at the forefront of local government, current Noosa mayor Noel Playford and deputy mayor Bob Abbot con-

PM draws protesters FORMER Prime Minister Tony Abbott visited Noosa in April 2015 to have lunch with Deputy Prime Minister and Wide Bay MP Warren Truss. The former PM dropped into a local cafe to grab a coffee before making his way to Hastings Street for lunch and selfies with locals. The day was marked by what were said to be the first protests in Hastings Street since the caravan park was closed more than 30 years ago. A same-sex marriage rally and Indigenous rights protest were held to deliberately coincide with Mr Abbott’s visit, and drew large crowds of supporters and spectators.

Former PM Tony Abbott posed for a selfie when he made a whirlwind visit to Noosa in April to meet with long-time supporter and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss.

Sad closure of hospice AFTER weeks of speculation, the Sunshine Hospice finally confirmed the temporary closure of its facilities in late December. The much-loved Katie Rose Cottage closed its doors due to “financial difficulties”, with board chairman Dr Frank Lewins saying the decision was “unpleasant” but necessary until the “financial picture becomes healthier”. Since opening in 2010, more than 200 people have died at the community palliative care facility that has been run by volunteers and a small amount of paid staff.

The 2016 local government elections are expected to be held in March this year.

The news saddened the community, but Dr Lewins said the board would consolidate revenue through the organisation’s charity shops, revise the business model and communicate more effectively the charity’s situation to the wider community into the future.

2015 – THE YEAR THAT WAS

PHOTOGRAPHS

Take a bow Noosa

Images that left a mark

From page 1

Last year was jam-packed with community spirit, important anniversaries, terrible events and history-making protests. NOOSA TODAY takes a look back at the images that left a mark in 2015. 2015 marked the 100 year anniversary of Anzac. The dawn service at Noosa Main Beach drew between 10,000 and 12,000 people, who stood on the shore to pay their respects to those who have served their country.

2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the local lobby group who fought to build Noosa’s wellloved Aquatic Centre. Maggie and Addison McGary along with Molly and Mike Hopper and Chantelle and Mason Gilbert say thank you to the steering committee who helped build the pool they now swim in.

Protesters for equality and rights joined together to march on former Prime Minister Tony Abbott when he dropped into Noosa for a lunch event early last. The protesters, one for marriage equality and the other for land rights, made history when they came together to form a single protest demanding rights and equality.

Community spirit was high at the inaugural Paddle in Pink event in August. The 180 participants jumped on paddle boards, boats, kayaks and surf skis to raise $3500 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Fire tore through the iconic Classic Malibu Surfboard building in January, leaving two local businesses gutted. The popular business has been a cornerstone of the Noosa community for over 20 years.

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott paid Noosa a visit in April this year and drew big crowds of supporters and protesters alike.

Noosa Council development planner Jack Lewis took advantage of the massive swell at Sunshine Beach after devastating storms hit North Brisbane in May. The day will forever be remembered as one of the best surfing days for those brave enough to paddle out.

The annual Santa’s Classy Helpers pop-up department store was another success, with over 300 families doing it tough able to access the store and shop for free to get everything they need for the holiday season. The store is stocked with thousands of donated items that are tirelessly collected throughout the year thanks to Santa’s Classy Helpers, led by local business owner Lorraine Kenway. Noosa locals also came out in support of fundraising events, such as the annual John Piercy Memorial Golf Day, organised by the Smile for a Child charity and held at Noosa Golf Club in March, which raised over $25,000 for five local charities. The community also came together to help families in need through a number of public appeals for help. People responded with gusto when local mum Petra Geitl launched a fundraising campaign in 2014 to buy a wheelchair-friendly car for her son, Jack, 10, who has cerebral palsy. In March 2015, thanks to fundraising events and local business support, Petra was able to raise the $25,000 needed to buy the modified car to help transport her son to school. The community came together again in September when the Vietnam Veterans’ Association launched an appeal to raise $25,000 for a Tewantin family in need of a Smart Pup. Parents Sabine and Warren Laidlaw were concerned for their 12-year-old son Ziggy, who is non-verbal autistic and had reached an age where he liked to explore and had been found dangerously close to busy roads. A Smart Pup would act as an anchor for Ziggy and help keep him safe, as well as provide company and comfort for him. In December 2015, $25,000 had been raised for the Laidlaw family and training has since started on a pup that will be Ziggy’s newest friend later this year. To every compassionate, thoughtful and kind person who selflessly donated to help others this year, we thank and celebrate you.

Friends rally for burial

It’s the end of the line for fishing icon FOURTH generation fisherman and wellknown local Trevor Clarey will hang up his pen, marking the end of a vocal campaign to protect commercial fishing in the Noosa shire. As well as retiring from the fight, Trevor has announced he will not renew his licence, ending more than five decades of commercial fishing. “I leave Noosa’s commercial fishing industry by firstly paying my respects to those pioneering commercial fishing families who laid the platform of best management practices for sustainability of our public resource,” he said. “The much-revered Massoud, Chaplins, Tedfords, Ross, Blankennees, Patemans and Parkyns are some of them. They enforced the weekend time closure, net sizes and fishing methods.” Trevor has also been a vocal advocate of the commercial fishing industry in Noosa, meeting with officials to protect the industry, as well as pushing for positive change to create a sustainable practice. Together with his fellow fighters, Trevor has helped introduce by-catch and turtle exclusion devices to the industry. “One hasn’t read or viewed dead turtles as a consequence of trawl/turtle interaction since these devices became compulsory in the 1999 East Coast Trawl Management plan,” Trevor said. “Take a bow, industry.” Other achievements throughout Trevor’s time include the introduction of vessel monitoring systems to help protect Laguna Bay, the fixing of the always-moving trawl boundary line to define the Laguna Bay trawl area, and the introduction of crew li-

cences to allow a master fisher to have family and friends on board as part of the operations. Personally, Trevor said he had had many proud moments, such as being nominated to lead the newly formed NICA in 1996, being asked by many locals to “toss his hat into the council elections ring”, and being asked to pay tribute to Howard Parkyn at his funeral. One of Trevor’s most touching moments was “being asked by the Bickle and Richardson families to help dress Daphne’s dad ‘Ol Joe Richardson’ in trawl and mullet net to send him in his net boat up to Saint Peter”. Trevor has also graced the pages of local papers many times with passionate letters to the editor about the local fishing industry. “Through the many years of letter writing, I’ve had only two negative responses, a pretty good result,” Trevor said. Throughout his years of fighting for the industry, Trevor said he must pay tribute to Noosa’s former MP Cate Molloy, who often discussed local issues with Trevor. “When local issues arose, she would call an audience of myself and fellow fishers for local industry input,” he said. “She didn’t shoot her mouth off or go to print, like others have done, before arming herself with the industry’s position. For that I will always admire the lady. Thank you, Cate.” Trevor will continue to fish recreationally, but with his 72nd birthday just around the corner he said it was time to hang up the pen and enjoy the good life. When asked for a final sign off, Trevor said: “Cheers and good fishing.”

FRIENDS and family of Nathan Thorn, the victim of a brutal stabbing in Tewantin just days after Christmas, have rallied together to raise funds for his funeral. The Go-Fund-Me page, which was created 3 January, has already raised $515 but still has a long way to go to reach its $5000 goal. Mr Thorn, who was considered a kind and caring person by his friends, was found collapsed in the middle of Ernest Street at Tewantin with multiple stab wounds late last year. Robert John Nott, 38, of Peregian Springs, has been charged with one count of murder over the death of Mr Thorn and is due in court again on 25 February. If you would like to donate please go to www.gofundme.com.

Celebrating a big sports year WELL here we go again, another year. I don’t know about you but I am certainly looking for a far better 12 months then the last. I, like many others, am looking forward to the 2015 Sport Star of the Year Awards being hosted by Twin Waters on Friday 29 January. Always a great night bringing together athletes, coaches, clubs, families, administrators, all celebrating the last 12 months of effort. It doesn’t really matter how many gold medals or world records have been won or set, it’s all about saying well done. Sport is contested in a majority of disciplines from Caboolture to Gympie, some even further afield extending into Hervey Bay. Over the past 12 months, athletes have been selected judged on criteria that clearly activates on performance and not on popularity or media profile. This year’s field has competed in 18 different sports, producing four world champions, 12 national champions, 19 international teams, one World Cup and of the 24 named nine are men and 15 women.

Benny’s

beat BENNY PIKE

That alone shows the Coast's standout strengths and a factor that sets us apart from the rest of Queensland. Noosa athletes have played their part in this terrific story in a variety of sports. Little athletics was the starting point for Samantha Johnson, who won gold and silver in her first appearance for her country at the Oceania titles. Tewantin’s hidden gem Larissa Crummer was a star on the international big time as a super sub for the Matildas at the World Cup. The apprentice plumber has been donning the green and gold since 14 but her recent national status could signal big things ahead. Perennial lifesaving star Jordan Mercer continues to mesmerise her opposition as she continues to plunder everyone in her path in the Hawaiian paddle-board and ski marathons. I am hoping she can duplicate those wins at this year’s

Sunshine Coast National Lifesaving Titles in April. A little reminiscing of the last time the nationals were here 1980, and Grant Kenny’s double Ironman gold. Belli Park’s most famous athlete Shara Gillow continues to cycle on the world stage and is chasing her second Olympic Games in Rio. It’s always great to see her at home and training at the Eumundi Pool. Noosa’s events and facilities continue to help locals compete against the world's best, and hopefully the soon to be new look council will realise the importance of maintaining and investing in future opportunities. Please realise, the athletes who will be on show at the awards are aged from 14 to 31. I congratulate the various sporting clubs. Your combined efforts in helping keep the great Aussie spirit of having a go alive, is much appreciated. Whoever takes out the top honors at the awards, are just keeping the tradition alive. Until next time.

Praise for New Year revellers QUEENSLAND Police have praised the behaviour of New Year’s revellers across the state, with reported arrest numbers down compared to last year. In a report released by Queensland Police, there were 536 arrests at celebrations across the state, with 65 of those being made on the Sunshine Coast. A majority of the arrests

state wide related to public order and drug related offences. Police Minister Bill Byrne said he was pleased the vast majority of Queenslanders were well behaved and enjoyed New Year celebrations without incident. “It is pleasing to hear that while police had a busy night across the state, the majority of celebrations were free of

any major incidents,” Mr Byrne said. While Noosa wasn’t incident free, with one teenage girl suffering a black eye and cracked cheekbone after an attack in Noosa, Senior Constable Phelan of Noosa Police said party-goes were mostly on their best behaviour. “It was busy, but it was a good crowd, overall everyone was pretty well behaved,” he said.

Unique opportunity

A NEW development has been announced for the much sought-after Sunshine Beach area, with expressions of interest now being called for the unique Indigo development.

and tiles, plus solid oak features, and a neutral palette combine to create a sense of true opulence in one of Noosa’s best locations.

In a shift from the standard formula of repetitive apartment living, the residences in Indigo have been individually configured to highlight their best aspects resulting in differing floorplans and tailored interiors so no two apartments are exactly alike.

Careful consideration and design has also gone into the complex’s outdoor living spaces, with the pool and recreational space designed to deliver resort-style elegance and a focus on functionality and entertaining.

The apartments have been designed by award-winning architects, Blackburn Jackson, who were asked to create living spaces that were low-maintenance, while capturing the essence of relaxed beachside living. The apartments will be presented in timeless, elegant designs created with superior craftsmanship and executed in the finest finishes and inclusions; setting a new standard in luxury apartment living in Sunshine Beach. Finishes such as imported marble and porcelain stoneware

The designers have drawn on inspiration from world-class hotel destinations that have resulted in features such as bespoke Moroccan hand-made tiles throughout the pool area and a spectacular garden wall. There is also a dedicated barbecue pavilion with wellappointment kitchenette, powder room and outdoor shower. With only seven boutique apartments available, boastings expansive views from an elevated position, perfect northerly aspect, and an enviable location, this development will sell out fast.

Stamp it out! THE current GST review could offer a rare chance to banish stamp duty for good. REIQ chief executive Antonia Mercorella said the current discussions around broadening the GST could provide ample opportunity for the Queensland Government to reconsider stamp duty. “The current COAG discussions provide an opportunity for the Queensland Government to examine its reliance on stamp duty and look for a solution to the problem of relying on a volatile source of income that stifles the real estate market,” she said.

“While the states are talking to the Federal Government about tax solutions to budgetary issues, it’s a golden opportunity to review the onerous burden that stamp duty is in the Queensland market.” Ms Mercorella said stamp duty was an unreliable revenue for the Government, as it relies on the market doing well to create a high revenue and is an unnecessary headache for home buyers. “The impost that stamp

significantly benefit property consumers and the real estate market by making housing much more affordable and increasing sales volumes. Ms Mercorella said the State Government should not let this opportunity slide by when all key decision makers were at the table and ready to talk. “Now is that opportunity to take action and finally achieve those goals.”

Important to know your DIY limits A FEW days off over the holidays can seem like the perfect time to begin those DIY projects you have been putting off all year, but experts warn it is important to know your limits and recognise the right time to hire professional. With the success of renovation television shows, DIY has become increasingly popular and statistics show there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight to home renovations. Overall, renovations have been trending up - an increase of more than 5000 during the 2014-15 financial year, with the figure topping 57,000. Master Builders executive director Grant

Galvin said that when deciding whether to do a job yourself or call in the experts, determining the value of the work is the first place to start. “If the value of the work exceeds $3300 then it must be carried out by a licensed contractor,” Mr Galvin said. “This is why it is so important to follow the correct processes for approvals, inspections and general building requirements if you are completing the work yourself. “Even though DIY might save you money on the renovation, any bad workmanship could negatively affect the resale price

as savvy buyers will ask to see inspection records.”

beginning.

As a rule, Master Builders advises home owners to never do their own electrical or plumbing work as it is generally against the law to do so. The same advice applies to any asbestos removal required. When renovating over a short period of time such as the Christmas break, it can be tempting to cut corners in order to get the job done. This presents a myriad of potential problems which can often cost more time

Mr Galvin said that one way of ensuring your contractor was properly licensed was to build with a Master Builder. Building with a Master Builder gives you peace of mind that your builder or tradie is appropriately licensed and has the support of Master Builders, who provide members with access to practical training, advice and up-to-date information to help them raise their professional standards.

Get those finances in order NOOSA residents could add thousands more to their retirement savings by putting super on their list of New Year’s resolutions, according to superannuation experts. QSuper CEO Michael Pennisi said budgeting and fitness often topped the list for resolutions but understanding how fees can impact super can help ensure a rewarding retirement later in life. “This helps with confidence and knowing that in retirement you could have the freedom to travel, as well as afford things like private health insurance, a car and other household items, Mr Pennisi said. “There are plenty of free online tools to help assess fees, such as calculators which can compare different funds. To get a complete picture, it’s important to look beyond the figures to the overall value a fund provides. Mr Pennisi listed his top tips for understanding fees. 1. Find out the category your fund falls into and the types of fees they charge. 2. Watch out for ‘hidden’ fees. Not all fees are stated up front, but things like transaction fees can really eat away at your balance 3. Consider the total value you get from your fund, not just fees but service and investment performance 4. Know that investment managers are paid a fee which includes a performance amount if they exceed their targets and get better returns for your super. 5. Have a conversation with your super fund or a trusted financial adviser. Mr Pennisi said understanding the fee structure of a super fund can be complex but plenty of help is available online or by calling your main fund. “For an overall view you should consider things like how the fund has performed, the investment options available, the services they offer and any benefits you get from being a member, in addition to the fees charged, he said.

Ideal time to add some new skills

QSuper CEO Michael Pennisi urges Noosa residents to make a new year resolution to supersize their super. “We encourage Noosa residents to read their product disclosure statements carefully to understand the fees a fund charges, and to review their annual statements to see what they have personally paid. “If there is anything you don’t understand, the New Year is a great time to have a conversation with your super fund or a trusted financial adviser.

HAVE you ever wanted to master a new language or finally learn how to make pottery? This new year is the perfect time to make a resolution to learn something new right here in Noosa. It provides opportunities for members to share their learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun. LETTERS Glimpse of traffic future A SIGHT I’ve never seen before in Noosa: a long, long tailback from the Weyba Road roundabout extending along Reef Street all the way to the Eenie Creek Road roundabout. It’s peak visitor time here, of course, and some key roads are bottlenecking under the strain. But I get the feeling I may have had a brief glimpse of the future unless some of these issues are addressed soon. Fortunately a Noosa Transport Strategy is about to be developed under the auspices of Noosa Council. The planning begins this year and the strategy will look at the development of transport options over the next 20 years. Next week the council starts consulting with peak community organisations as part of the strategy development process. It’s good to see that it’s getting in ahead of what could become a chronic problem. Ingrid Jackson, Noosa.

The only way is up! THINGS are on the up and up for 2016; postage, debt and deficit, cost of living, pathology andradiology fees, electricity bills, mining subsidies, temperatures, emissions, severe weather events, company tax evasion etc. “There’s never been a more exciting time to be an Australian”. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

Ageist ravings BOTH your columnist Benny Pike and letter writer Robyn Richards see retirees as an undesirable threat to Noosa. Are they aware that the retirement industry contributes capital and income into this community, and that it provides local employment in the building and services trade? The local retiree population also helps keep retail trade afloat in down times. Retirees make up most of the volunteer workforce in the shire as well as being a significant proportion of the population that will vote in the council elections. I’m not sure Sandy Bolton will benefit from ageist comments being linked with her candidacy for mayor, but according Ms Richards if she’s successful retirees may no longer be welcome in Noosa. Juanita Deharo, ’Not Fuddy Duddy’, Noosa Heads.

The ultimate penalty OF course Clive Palmer would defend his seat on the defence of weekend penalty rates. He doesn’t have any employees to pay. He sacked nearly all of them from his Coolum Resort. He made sure everyone was at home with their kids, were he states they should be on a Sunday, he then also added Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and just to remain consistent, Saturday also. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

Same, same... or different? WHAT is the difference between someone running for council who is a member of a political party and someone who is a member of NPA? Hubert Gibson, Tewantin.

Passion for Noosa I AGREE wholeheartedly with Keith Jackson, (Noosa Today, 24 December). It is a great pity that the Pardon/Bolton team has already begun a negative campaign for the March elections. Noosa residents want more than that and I sincerely hope Pardon and Bolton realise this sooner rather than later. Cr Tony Wellington has been around for many years, beginning with his efforts to deamalgamate Noosa years before he was a paid councillor. He now has a track record showing his ability to present clear and considered arguments, a willingness to stand up for what he believes in and a true passion for Noosa’s values. Janet Simpson, Noosa.

BENNY Pike has inevitably put his money behind Sandy Bolton for mayor. No surprise there. Apart from wondering why a sport columnist continues to peddle his political views, it

is worth noting that his reasoning seems to be that as mayor, Sandy will take on the development attitudes of the council to our south - the one we voted to part ways with. Benny was fiercely opposed to the de-amalgamation. Sandy was nowhere to be seen during the many years fighting for Noosa independence. What a team they make. Gary Bain, Noosa.

Commonsense must prevail I AM writing about the new rules to ban all blow-up or temporary pools at a depth of a paltry 300mm or more from all fully fenced backyards unless they are expensively and permanently ’pool’ fenced. Have you noticed that despite the increasingly strict fencing laws, drownings are still occurring at the same rate? Perhaps these drownings are more as a result of poor parenting than because people have blow-up pools in their backyards to cool off hot children and others including the elderly. With roughly only half of the Australian population being able to afford to own their own homes these days, isn’t it a bit unfair on young children, families and any non-homeowners who wants to cool off in a backyard paddle pool to now be labelled a criminal if they do so? Really, I think it’s Big Brother gone completely mad in the Nanny Country of Australia when people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds can’t even legally erect and use a backyard swimming pool to counteract the hot Australian summer climate. What about all the flack people get for allowing their children to sit inside playing video games causing obesity? And yet when parents encourage children to get outside to play they also are considered negligent? A little commonsense needs to prevail and start putting the onus back on parents to ’parent’ properly without affecting other people’s freedom of choice who want and need to cool their bodies down in the privacy of their own backyard on a hot summer’s day. If my six foot (two metre) fence can legally keep my dogs in, then my six foot fence should be more than adequate to keep stranger’s toddlers out! I don’t have babies or children, ever at my home and if I ever did have an under two-yearold who couldn’t walk properly here, then they would be fully supervised at all times just like they always should be! Chamu Sanders, Noosaville.

Clad in selfish ideals SOME people I have spoken with, and the Australian Sex Party, if I read them right, would say No. What is wanted is a legal clothing-optional beach that can be enjoyed by all, clad or unclad. Not wanted is the current erratic cycle of persecution, prosecution and punishment of a minority of folk wishing to enjoy an isolated 850 meters of sand and sea called Alexandria Bay. Noosa is blessed with so many kilometres of beaches, all reserved for the exclusive use of fully clad persons, along with goannas, the occasional turtle and even tadpoles. It would seem to be selfish to deny the use of this relatively small area to a minority of people wishing for Vitamin D and risking sunburn to get it. One can see that they pose no security risk to the nation. Decades ago in South Australia, the Premier Don Dunstan legalised Maslin Beach in the spirit of anti-discrimination. The principle is that people should not be stigmatised and oppressed because they are perceived as non-mainstream. This action has apparently not harmed the people of South Australia. We could have here a clear guide for an enlightened Queensland Government. Zigi Georges, Noosa.

What Biosphere benefit? NOOSA ratepayers have paid thousands upon thousands of their hard earn rate money to secure Biosphere status and now even more money to the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation NBRF. I would estimate that the environmental levy collected since we got our council back would be something like $3.6 million. Can someone please tell me a single benefit (as a ratepayer, resident and businessman) I will receive from the thousands of dollars being allotted to the NBRF?

Don’t take my word for it - look up the council website - general gommittee meeting 19 October and ordinary meeting agenda 22 October. In fact, can anyone in this shire brag about one single solitary benefit they can describe from being part of this so called Biosphere in the last nine years since its inception? The purpose of this letter to the editor is to wager I know what the next move the council will make - it will purchase the TAFE College from the State Government. This will score points with the state so as it can then try to extend Biosphere and/or council boundaries to include the EDV area. They also want World Heritage listing over all or part of this greater Noosa Shire Biosphere area. If shire ratepayers want to go down the path of World Heritage listing, I suggest you have a look at the Springbrook Mountain Plateau World Heritage Area - it’s an economical disaster - the State Government can’t even sell the multi-million dollar Springbrook Mountain Manor. It’s worthless because it is in a World Heritage area. And how has it improved Fraser Island? Bob Jarvis, Tewantin.

Shooting the messenger IN response to Marie-Louise Sargeant and other anthropogenic global warming alarmists who have written in response to my letter of 17 November, I note that, as usual, you are shooting the messenger rather than addressing the facts in the message. No-one has even attempted to refute any of the facts set out in my letter. You must all be having a warm and fuzzy feeling after Paris, knowing that you have saved the planet from that terrible pollutant carbon dioxide, a gas that is not a pollutant, is vital for life on the planet and without which we would all die. Also, keep in mind that life on Planet Earth is carbon based. Paris has already cost us $10 billion per year (and rising) and will be sorely missed in our health and welfare systems. The majority of research should be put into energy storage, because without adequate energy storage, windmills and solar farms are a novelty and useless when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine. Now that the globe has stopped warming and has been in a slight cooling phase for the last 17 to 20 years, it will be easy to keep the global temperature rise to less than 1.5 degrees, without any reduction in anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide. The magic figure that 97 per cent of climate scientists support anthropogenic global warming is a lie based on a flawed survey carried out by the AGU. The figure should have been three per cent. Phillip Rutherford, Cooroibah.

Legalise it I STRONGLY agree that Queensland should have a legalised nudist beach. A-Bay has been an unofficial nude beach for years and having it legal would generate more income for the community from more patronage coming from Australia and abroad. Raymond Smith, Noosa.

Stick to the speed limit I REFER to the letter from G. Lewis (Noosa Today, 17 December) regarding the 80kmh speed limit on the Eumundi-Noosa Road and his wish to raise it to 100kmh. This road is, and has always been, bordered along its length by rural and residential properties and their pre-existing access driveways, of which we have one. This road was never intended to be a major connection road from Noosa to the Bruce Highway, nor as a 100kmh road, as there is limited visibility for access driveways due to its undulating nature. We, like others, are constantly delayed or harassed by speeding traffic when entering or leaving our driveway. I would hope that through traffic should consistenly observe the 80kmh speed limit on this road, or find other access to the Bruce Highway if they wish to exceed it. Driving at above the limit, as he admits to doing, disregards the safety both of current residents and other road users. J. Jeffreys, Verrierdale. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

New year, new you IF YOU made a New Year’s resolution to become healthier in 2016, it might just be easier to obtain than you think. Health professional Dr Bruce Bolam said that, while people often struggled to keep New Year’s resolutions, there are easier ways to make change and get healthy for 2016. “People often put a lot of pressure on themselves to stick to New Year’s resolutions which at times can be unrealistic or unattainable, Dr Bolam said. “Ensuring a happy and healthy 2016 for you and your family doesn’t have to be a daunting challenge. Small changes in diet and lifestyle can lead to big changes in the short and long term. VicHealth has come up with six achievable tips to start 2016 the healthy way, whether it’s a resolution or not. 1. Try swapping sugary drinks for water. Sugar sweetened beverages are the largest source of sugars in the Australian diet, and they can lead to weight gain and tooth decay. 2. If heading to the gym isn’t your thing then there’s still plenty of ways to get active. If you’ve got a furry friend head to the dog park, go for a stroll along the beach, or do a little gardening. Simply walking 10,000 steps a day is an achievable goal for most people, and has many long term health benefits. 3. It’s easy to indulge a little over the Christmas and New Year period. In 2016 try and reduce your alcohol consumption. This doesn’t have to mean entirely cutting out the booze, it’s all about moderation. Try

drinking water in between drinks and slowing your drinking down by eating healthy food when drinking alcohol. 4. Given we spend so much of our lives at work, it’s easy to get caught up in it all and become burnt out. If you’re feeling stressed at work speak to your boss about how to manage the pressure. You could also request casual Friday or bring your dog to work Friday around the office to boost the mental wellbeing of all staff. 5. If you’ve got kids, why not kick off Term One by getting into a healthy routine of walking to school. Walking to school helps kids keep active and builds their confidence. If walking the whole way to school isn’t possible try parking the car nearby and walking part of the way, every step counts. 6. A five-minute walk in the fresh air with a healthy dose of sunshine, using a standing desk or having a walking meeting with a colleague can give you the mental and physical refresh that you need. You’ll come back feeling productive, refreshed and energised and reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Steps to keeping those resolutions CHANCES are at some time in your life you’ve made a New Year’s resolution and then broken it. This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change and then not following through. If your resolution is to take better care of yourself and get healthy, you will have a much better year if your resolution sticks. Here are six tips to help you get started and make that resolution stick. 1. The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to never eat your favourite food again is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now. 2. Don’t keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best-case scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other. 3. Celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you have been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, reward yourself with new fitness clothing or by going to a movie with a friend.

4. Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, and take one day at a time. 5. Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient. 6. If you have totally run out of steam when it comes to keeping your resolution by mid-February, don’t despair. Start over again! Recommit yourself for 24 hours. You can do anything for 24 hours. The 24-hour increments will soon build on each other and, before you know it, you will be back on track.

“

Uni staff chip in for needy STAFF from the University of the Sunshine Coast helped local families have a happier Christmas with the donation of about 20 food and gift hampers to the Salvation Army. USC Senior HR Consultant (Health, Safety and Wellbeing) Peter Gooding presented the hampers to Salvation Army Maroochydore officer Daniel Ross, along with a cheque for $857. A large part of the donation was collected at the recent USC Staff Swimming Carnival, involving more than 60 swimmers and 170 spectators. Now in its third year, the carnival had plenty of friendly rivalry between disciplines and had staff jumping in the pool in costumes ranging from pirates to tutus. Mr Gooding said baskets were also placed in offices around the university for staff to contribute food and toys as part of the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal. “The swimming carnival is part of our wellbeing program for staff,” Mr Gooding said. “It’s a lot of fun and great for morale, and it’s also a chance for us to contribute to a good cause. “The Salvation Army is a fantastic local group, and the cash donations, toys and food we’ve collected are all going to local families in need.”

More room on deck THE viewing platform at Mudjimba Beach has doubled in size, with Sunshine Coast Council completing the expansion late last year. Division 8 Councillor Jason OPray, who allocated divisional funding to the upgrade, said the deck was a popular beach entrance. “The deck is the main en-

trance to our beautiful Mudjimba Beach and a popular spot to enjoy the view of Old Woman Island or check out the surf,” Cr OPray said. “The expansion includes new bar-style seating and a lot of extra standing room for people to gather. “The platform is often very crowded with locals in the

afternoons and on weekends, which was making it difficult for people heading down to the beach – now there’s plenty of space. “We’ve also replaced the light at the deck with a turtlefriendly light to help protect the nesting turtles. “It’s great to have this finished at the start of the summer holidays.”

Continuing the theme of the power of photography, while there is no humour in dementia, there is an ongoing need for light relief in the lives of those who have to watch its torrid course. This is Mum, at almost 93, seen with Santa at the nursing home on December 23. Shown the photo, she asked: “Which one is me?” God love her, and please support Molly’s Song in 2016.

TION PURPOSES ON PIC FOR ILLUSTRA

NO writer likes to hear it, but a picture is often worth far more than a thousand words, which is why so many photographers are vainglorious overbearing bastards. Sorry shutterbugger mates, but envy is a sore you shouldn’t scratch. The photographer’s art is a special one indeed, and I’ve been privileged to know and work with some of the best, which never ceases to make me sad and mad about the way in which the photographic art has been so diminished by social media in the last decade. These days any mug can flick off a selfie on his phone, print it on canvas at Office Works and call it art. Likewise, in the moment phone grabs of news events have replaced in large part the considered composition of the best news photos of old. I know, I know, the foregoing dates me like the carbon of my aged bones, but this rant has been inspired in part by a conversation I had over dinner in Noosa this week with our Bali friends and human rights activists Patrick Burgess and his wife Galuh Wandita. I’ve written about Patrick in these pages before, so I won’t labour that, and I know he intends to write his own account of the story behind the photos. Suffice it to say that a casual conversation over a pleasant meal had us Googling madly over our wines to establish that a famous photo with which I had a connection led directly to an equally famous photo involving Patrick’s famous father, the legendary war correspondent Pat Burgess. It’s a story about photography and connectivity, and also great tragedy, and without letting the cat out of the bag as far as Patrick’s story of his father is concerned, from my side it begins with my meeting in 1980 with Eddie Adams, a New York-based photographer who had won the Pulitzer Prize in 1968 for his horrific and provocative Vietnam War photograph, “Saigon Execution”, which showed General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, head of the South Vietnamese national police, about to blow the head off Vietcong prisoner Nguyen Van Lem.

No tragedy could be greater than the summary justice handed out to Van Lem, but tragedy also engulfed the photographer and his subject in subsequent years. The general’s story is one I will leave for Patrick, but when I became friends with Eddie Adams a dozen years later, I found a good man with a damaged soul. His friend Bob Guccione, founder of Penthouse, and despite what you may recall about that magazine, a true philanthropist and humanitarian, had sent Eddie to the antipodes to get him clean and sober, and help out with the new Australian edition, of which I had just become editor. Well, guess what? There wasn’t a great deal of sobriety over the three months that Eddie and I shared in Sydney, but there was a lot of what I would call healing. Letting it out, feeling free to discuss the defining moments in your life without guilt, without fear. I liked Eddie a lot. He was a brilliant and fearless photojournalist, and an honest man who faced his demons with strength and humour. But taking that photo and trying to come to terms with what he had done, and what he might have done otherwise, haunted the latter part of his life, which ended too early in 2004. I know he had no choice. He was a photographer, he did what they do, and that must be respected. Around the walls of our house we hang the photographic works of Max Dupain, Rennie Ellis, Bob Weeks, John Witzig, Dick Hoole and Robert Ashton. I don’t have an Eddie Adams because that would be too painful, but I think of him often. As for Patrick Burgess, he’ll be joining us in the capacity of singer/songwriter during the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing in March, and talking about his and Galuh’s work for women’s rights across Asia.

Pirates in a league of their own THE Noosa Pirates are sailing solo this year as they emerge from 2015 hungry for the win. After a successful 2015 season the former Northern Outlaws, which consisted of the Noosa and Gympie teams, has disbanded after it was decided that both teams were strong enough to venture into 2016 on their own. With a new-look committee and the return of former player and coach Terry Bullen, the faithful Noosa fans are delighted to see their team restored as a solo entity for the 2016 season. Mr Bullen is joined by A-Grade coach Craig Keen, former NRL player and personal trainer, reserve grade coach Scott Christensen, who is returning for a second season, and Mark Trevanion, who will be whipping the under 18s into shape. If you are interested in joining the Noosa Pirates for their 2016 season you can attend the first training session of the year on Tuesday 12 January from 5.45pm at the Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club at 31 Butler St, Tewantin. Players, support staff and volunteers are encouraged to attend. VOGUE: The Junior Fitness team Tayla, Portia, Shae, Zoe and Jessica.

Triumph in the tropics NOOSA went tropical over the Christmas holidays, with six local athletes representing the sunny shire in the Caribbean. Sport aerobics competitors, supporters and officials from 14 nations across the world gathered on the Caribbean island of Martinique in December for the 2015 FISAF World Championships. Six talented teenage athletes from Noosa’s own Champs Sports Aerobics Club attended the five day event supported by their coach, proud parents and other Australian teams. In the lead-up to the event the athletes were training a minimum of four days a week, which paid off with both the Junior Sports Aerobics Team and the Junior Fitness Team claiming fifth place overall. It was the second invitation to compete at a world championship level for the Junior Sports Aerobics trio, having travelled to Serbia in 2013 and again in December 2015 to show the world what they could do. Champs Sports Aerobics Club is holding a registration day for interested athletes on Wednesday 13 January. If you would like further information please contact Casey Douglas on 0411 200 445.

Beachgoers largely well behaved IT HAS been a very good holiday break around Noosa, with no major incidents, according to Anthony King, Life Guard Supervisor for our Northern Region. “Our open beaches have been a bit windy with shore breaks but it has been relatively safe," he said. "Noosa's Main Beach has been ideal for families, great conditions; crowds have been up on last year but they have been doing everything right. We hope they keep it up.” The local lifeguards at Noosa's Main Beach have had several minor first aid incidents to attend. “We have had a few incidents with swimmers ignoring the Don’t Swim sign up in the corner near First Point,” said senior lifeguard Isaac Smith. “Novice board riders start in this

Between the

flags RON LANE

area and there have been some incidents because swimmers ignore the sign. We ask them to walk down to the flagged areas and stay away from the First Point area as it has always been for the board riders. Otherwise it has been a safe period.” On Friday, Noosa patrol members were required to assist some boogie board riders and a woman who ignored the rip sign near the mouth of the Noosa Bar and were swept out a short distance. Quick action by the roving patrol members prevented a tragedy. “Once again it was well away from the

flags and the signs were ignored,” said the patrol captain. Sunday afternoon a group of some 12 people gathered in the courtyard of the Noosa club to express their sincere thanks for the rescue of an elderly lady on 7 November last year. Patrol members involved were present and the people, all members of the ladies family expressed their sincere thanks. Gestures like this are rare and the lifesavers were indeed grateful. Many thanks to the family for taking the time to say thank you. The Sunshine Beach ATV roving patrol, under the control of Pauline Gleeson, was on its way back from Alexandria Bay on Sunday afternoon when they were made aware of four young boys in trouble near dog beach at the northern end of Sunshine.

Equipped with rescue tubes two of the ATV crew, Jackson Schultz and Tom O’Conner, immediately went to their aid and were able to bring them into the beach. This was indeed a great effort as the two swimmers were juniors, having just qualified for their Surf Rescue Certificate. This year will no doubt be one of the biggest years in the history of the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club. Not only will this club be one of the three, Maroochydore, Alexandra Headlands and Mooloolaba to host the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships 16-24 April, but it will also celebrate its centenary of service to the community as a rescue organisation. Over the years it has established a record in both rescue and competition that is second to none. On behalf of our

local clubs, well done to all members past and present. It all started on 1 January 1916, when Maroochy took delivery of a tent donated by the Salvation Army at Cotton Tree. Lifesaving squads from Bli Bli and Maroochydore performed their first patrols at the beach on January 2 1916. Five rescues were performed on that day. Like most clubs things went on hold during World War II when about 50 of their members enlisted in the armed forces. Of these five didn’t return. Following this, the club went through a rebuilding program and success followed success. Regarding the titles, many families make them their annual holidays so the financial opportunities to our business communities should be addressed.

Coast to host nationals By RON LANE IT IS an annual event, reputed to be the biggest in Australia outside the Commonwealth Games. Upward of 5000 athletes and officials will this year converge on the Sunshine Coast to organise and contest the Surf Life Saving Championships of Australia. This event which will run from Saturday 16 April to Sunday 24 April will be contested on three beaches; Maroochydore, Alexandra Headlands and Mooloolaba. This carnival, usually referred to as the nationals, will have a program of some 380 events and the majority of our 311 clubs will be represented. At present it is intended to hold the Open, Masters and Youth events at Maroochydore, Boats noosa.starcommunity.com.au

and Lifesaving at Alexandra Headland and the Beach Events at Mooloolaba. Interesting to note that the first ever attempt of a carnival was in 1915 at Bondi and only two events were on the program; Rescue and Resuscitation and the Surf Race. It wasn’t until 1932 that the first official Australian titles were held, again on Bondi beach. This was to help celebrate the opening of the Sydney Harbor Bridge. So big has this event become that many surf club families organise their annual holidays around this week long carnival. Once it is over they travel and it is hopeful during the time many of these people will visit our beautiful beaches and enjoy the Noosa hospitality. Shopping restaurants and sightseeing.

The 2016 Surf life Saving Championships will be held on the Sunshine Coast.
