Kids tuck in to hearty brekky HULA hoops, belly dancing and bubbles ... for breakfast? Yarraman Oaks Primary also added egg and spoon races, cricket and skipping to the menu to get the Wednesday 2 March school day off to a good start. The Noble Park school also served up healthy food, but the event’s main focus was getting kids active and happy about coming to school each morning. Enjoying breakfast were friends Annette, Evana and Laureen. For more pictures go to dandenong. starcommunity.com.au 150679 Picture: GARY SISSONS.

■ Vision for a manufacturing jobs hub......
Planning to build DANDENONG and the south-east could become Australia’s manufacturing hub if a new $1.2 billion vision becomes reality. Committee for Dandenong (C4D) hosted a regional manufacturing showcase in Queens Hall at Parliament House on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 March. Premier Daniel Andrews joined C4D chairman Gary Castricum to launch the group’s three-year strategic agenda at a cocktail event on Tuesday. It champions strengthening smart manufacturing and innovation, improving transport and infrastructure, continued revitalisation in Dandenong’s CBD, and fostering community wellbeing.
“Adding 10,000 new manufacturing jobs to Melbourne’s south-east means that this region will become Australia’s largest manufacturing zone,” Mr Castricum said. Supporting the event and the document were South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA), the Greater Dandenong, Kingston, Knox, Cardinia and Casey councils, the CSIRO, Chisholm Institute, and businesses including Bombardier, Jayco and SRX Global. “This alliance is a first for the south-east of Melbourne,” Mr Castricum said. “Councils, educators and researchers are working together to make Melbourne’s south-east the centre of manufacturing in Australia. “They are joining local manufactur-
ers and businesses to attract $1.2 billion of public and private investment to the region. “Their aim is to create jobs, stimulate local economies and innovation, and strengthen community health, wellbeing and resilience.” Mr Castricum said the south-east produced more than half of Victoria’s manufactured product and included 5000 manufacturing businesses providing 90,000 jobs. “This incredibly valuable Manufacturing Zone has the potential to become an internationally-renowned centre of manufacturing excellence,” he said. “It is a strong, powerful and collective vision.” Mr Andrews said attendance from all sides of parliament at the cocktail

event “should be taken as a great vote of confidence in Dandenong and the south-east”. “To all of those who are here tonight, know and understand that we will keep working with you, we’ll keep partnering with you,” he said. “There is a strong future for manufacturing. “If the south-east is firing and the south-east is going well then I think our state is in pretty good shape as well. “I thank you for the risks that you take, the investments that you champion, the innovation, the challenges that you overcome every quarter, every year.” Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said manufacturing was not dead, but it was changing.
“We will see some types of manufacturing exit, unfortunately,” she said. “But we don’t want the capability to also exit.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said manufacturing was a job creator “with up to five jobs being created in the rest of the economy for every job in manufacturing”. She said the sector was no longer “dirty, dumb and dangerous” but “clever, clean and critical”. The Smart Manufacturing 2016 Dandenong and South East Melbourne on Show event will take over Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, on Tuesday 17 May. It will demonstrate job, investment and growth opportunities, research and education in manufacturing, and innovation and capability in manufacturing.

Drug order for Apex Gang middle man By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NARRE Warren South man accused of being a conduit between Apex Gang juvenile car thieves and Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang may be placed on a two-year drug treatment order. Ahmed Farhad Lodin, 30, pleaded guilty to more than 20 offences including a breach of a suspended sentence, ice trafficking, illegal firearm possession, car theft and burglary at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 22 March. Police dropped 14 charges in exchange for the plea. Lodin had been allegedly assisting the sale of high-end vehicles stolen by Apex and Young Crucified Warriors (YCW) street gangs to the Mongols last year. He had admitted to arranging the exchange of stolen vehicles for cash and methamphetamine, the court was told in a bail hearing in December. Among his charges were a car
theft from a Langwarrin home on 21 July and stealing a $40,000 Audi from a Malvern East home on 19 October. The Langwarrin victim identified Lodin as one of three male burglars who she found in her garage. The terrified victim ran from the intruders and later found that two motorbikes, power tools and motorbike equipment to the value of nearly $5000 had been taken. Lodin was also seen travelling in the stolen Audi in November, the court was told. The car was later allegedly found during a police search warrant at his home, along with an Audi car key, Audi documents, a Winchester Hornet .22 firearm with 18 rounds, an imitation handgun, shotgun shells, orange-tip ammunition and disassembled pen pistols in Glad bags. Police also allegedly seized items and substances used to make drugs, more than a dozen number plates, $1950 cash, mobile phones, drivers licences under different names, six
bags of “white crystal substance” and a BMW tin and documents. Lodin was arrested at his home on 11 November and taken to Dandenong Hospital due to wounds allegedly inflicted by Hells Angels OMCG members over a drug debt. According to a police summary, Lodin was suffering stab and burn injuries to his legs and had a cut to the bridge of his nose. He had also been badly beaten during a previous stint in prison, losing the sight in his left eye, the court was told. Lodin was sitting on a 199-day suspended jail term and had “significant” prior convictions for dangerous driving, threats to kill, assault, affray, armed robbery and driving while suspended and disqualified. The Apex Gang has been linked to a string of armed robberies, carjackings, driving stolen vehicles at high speed late last year, as well as a culpable driving charge levelled at a 15-year-old boy. This month, Apex rose to notori-
ety when it brawled with Islander23 gang members during Moomba celebrations in Melbourne’s CBD. At the hearing on 22 March, Lodin was referred to Dandenong Drugs Court where he’ll be assessed for a drug treatment order in lieu of a jail term. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he was satisfied that Lodin was “not out of range” of a maximum twoyear jail term to qualify for the drug treatment order. The order can include conditions such as a curfew, non-association with certain offenders, drug ban and intensive counselling and treatment. He noted Lodin had already served 132 days in pre-sentence detention. Mr Vandersteen said Lodin’s involvement with young offenders was “significant”. “I have sentenced young people where Mr Lodin’s name has been given more than once.” Lodin was remanded to face Dandenong Drugs’ Court on 19 May.
App helps promote understanding By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS VITAL facts on English classes are fingertips away for asylum seekers in the south-east. The newly-launched English for Asylum Seekers’ Network app answers a crying need for an accessible up-to-date list of the scores of English-language class tutors and providers in Greater Dandenong. The app was developed mainly by volunteers at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and led by project manager Andrea Kenny over the past six months. Ms Kenny adapted a schools app template for an easy-to-use list for students, tutors and class providers. It lists classes by location and by day of the week, with individualised maps and photos to help find the venues. The information is thoughtfully translated into a host of languages with details on class costs, class levels, child care, website links and contacts. There are several handy applications for this app. If there’s a last-minute class time-change or cancellation, students can be sent notifications on their phone. Suitable alternative classes can also be found in seconds, if necessary. When time-tabling, providers
Slithering snake leads to toilet terror A DANDENONG funeral director was in the right place when he spotted a snake slithering past his foot. “I was in the toilet doing my business,” Adam Le Boeuf said. “It scared the crap out of me.” The Classic Funeral Services manager’s close encounter with a baby copperhead snake happened about 2pm on Thursday 17 March. “I looked down and saw something moving by my foot,” he said. “It was probably seven inches long. “I ran out of the toilet.” Mr Le Boeuf grabbed his phone and raced back to the loo to take a photo. “I thought no one would believe me if I lost it,” he said. “But I came back and it was gone.” He went through the powder room bin “carefully, with a big stick” with no luck. Then Mr Le Boeuf spotted the reptile in a crack in the concrete block wall. He managed to manoeuvre it into a plastic CD holder. “I didn’t know what to do,” he said. “I pinned it down and put the clear container over it and slid a piece of cardboard under it like you’d catch a spider. “We’re in this industrial area - that was the last thing we expected.” He called a snake catcher and was told that copperheads were the seventh most dangerous snake in Australia. “We took it to a wildlife carer,” he said. - CASEY NEILL
Vehicle burned out A CAR was torched on Bayliss Road, Dandenong South, on Sunday 20 March. Police and CFA crews were called to the scene about 10.55pm and found a white Hyundai Excel fully engulfed on the roadside about 500 metres east of Taylors Road. Senior Constable Karen McIntyre urged anyone with information to call her at Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7444.
Simon Dalton, Andrea Kenny, Ashleigh Newnham, Robyn Coslovich and Nora McCluskey at the launch of the EAS Network app. 150682 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS can look up class times across the region to ensure there are no clashes. Ms Kenny has further volunteered to keep the app’s listings up to date, and to send out timely notifications. ASRC training co-ordinator Simon Dalton said no one had the time to put such a handy resource together until Ms Kenny’s intervention. “A lot of our clients have phones, and their phones are their life-savers.
“They allow them to get in touch with their families back home, on plans that allow them the maximum time to speak to their families.” Mr Dalton said in the past, the task of keeping clients posted on their classes was “a bit of a mess”. “There was just so many people and information changed so often we needed to be digital.” Tutor Nora McClosky had called for the co-ordination of the region’s hodgepodge of English classes for
the past 10 years. “We’re making history,” she ebulliently told the launch party. She described the app as an important “first step”. There was talk of Monash Health developing a more comprehensive and expensive - app in the next two years, listing all asylum seeker services in the region. The EAS Network app is available at the App Store (Apple) or Play Store (Android).

Tea house pours over refreshing tradition By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS MANY of the world’s problems could be dissolved in a cup of tea. At least it could take your mind off life’s stresses as well as lower cholesterol, blood pressure, improve indigestion and reduce diabetes says Milan Tea House owner Wendy Wong. Some of Melbourne’s fabled coffee drinkers have been converted to Ms Wong’s imported Chinese white, green and black teas in her serene shop which is tucked away in an alley near Springvale Central. “When I came to Melbourne, I realised they don’t have a real tea shop,” Ms Wong said. “I dreamed many years to open a shop that does it properly.” The store gets its name from a perfumed yellow flower. The wallpapers, the wood-carved cabinets, traditional music, tea sets and jade ornaments evoke suitably Eastern ambience. In quiet ritual, Ms Wong pours pu-

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL erh tea from China’s cool, mountainous Yunnan province. This region has a 1700-year history in tea. Its ripe variety - as opposed to its raw form - is fermented. Its dark, woody leaves produce a deep red, earthy-tasting aromatic tea. It’s infused several times in a handmade, purple clay teapot. The clay’s high-porosity allows for the tea to “breathe”. Flavour builds in the pots over many years. Ms Wong grew up in the “gourmet tea centre” of Guangzhou, China. It’s become her staple three times a day. She preaches the tea’s social and therapeutic value served in tiny cups. How it’s a healthier mood-changer than the West’s popular clutch, alcohol.
“Just with one cup, the tea helps calm you down. When you finish the pot, you will clear your mind. “Then you can solve your problems.”
For the uninitiated, the tea house is offering $3 tea tastings this Saturday, 2 April, and Sunday 3 April. Milan Tea House is open six days a

We did not have to send classes home.” Principal of Dandenong Girls School Miss A Boardman said: “I’m not going to make a public situation out of it. I don’t feel that my teachers would want me to.” 20 years ago 25 March 1996 Legal aids cuts HUNDREDS of Dandenong residents will be left to fight their own court cases under a new guidelines introduced by the Victorian Legal Aid Board, according to State Labor MP for Dandenong North Mrs Jan Wilson.
She said: “Leaked documents show legal aid for traffic prosecutions will only be available to people facing jail terms.” The State Opposition has released a discussion paper in response to the new guidelines outlining the results of the changes including 3900 or 15 per cent fewer grants, delays in the court system due to ‘duty solicitors’ being overloaded, and lower quality of representation due to inadequate preparation time for duty solicitors. 5 years ago 28 March 2011 Luxury car burnt A DANDENONG man, 45, was pulled
from his luxury car before it was stolen, burnt out and dumped. He was approached by two men in the car park at the corner of Foster and Thomas streets on 17 March about 9.30pm. The men, described as Southern European, started a conversation with the man as he sat in his car. They then pulled him out, jumped in and drove off. Don Cameron was quite the talker, mourners heard. 150761

His faith fed Don's soul By CASEY NEILL THE scent of pizza wafted into the packed auditorium as the service to farewell Pastor Don Cameron came to a close. “Don loved pizza because it was a community food,” Rowville Baptist Church Pastor Wally Starchenko had told mourners earlier. “It was always to share.” He’d also commented on the overwhelming attendance at the Faith Christian Church in Dandenong North on Wednesday 23 March. Most in the crowd agreed that “a couple of thousand” people had turned out to farewell the Cornerstone Contact Centre co-ordinator who died on 13 March following a sixweek battle with aggressive cancer. Pastor Starchenko said the attendees included a primary school teacher who Don continued to Facebook right to the end. “It just shows the character and the nature of who Don was,” he said. “Don had this way of making you feel like his best friend.” Don’s wife Jo compiled a 12-page collection of stories from his friends and family by way of a eulogy - “just a small snapshot” of his life, Pastor Starchenko said. It was filled with the humour that Don was well-known for and often had the auditorium erupting in laughter and reminiscing about their own encounters with the pastor. Pastor Starchenko said

fell in love with his long hair. Pastor Starchenko said Jo’s story was very different. Don would answer the phone when she called to speak to his housemate Ralph and engage her in lengthy conversations. Jo felt sorry for him and thought he must be lonely, mourners heard, so she invited him to attend a church group that met at her house. They married in May 2002, only after Collingwood fan Don cut his hair short and Jo pledged not to barrack for Carlton. Pastor Starchenko said Don was besotted with his daughters Annabelle and Jemimah, aged 8 and 10. “God did great things through Don,” Pastor Starchenko said. “He was a renowned talker but also a very good listener. “Don loved people who were difficult to love. “Don was a helper yet he rarely asked for help himself.” Preacher Dave Kranjec spoke at Don’s request, urging people to find salvation in Christianity. Don had provided him with some words to share on his behalf, among the most moving being: “I’m only a sinner saved by the grace of an almighty God.”

and served him well during his 25-odd years at Cornerstone. “It made it impossible to be intimidated or threatened by him,” he said. Don visited Cornerstone as much as possible during his final weeks. “It was his second home,” Pastor Starchenko said. Don was born on 13 November 1970 and attended Keysborough’s Resurrection School and Chandler High School. As a child, he would make up stories about what his toys got up to when they were sleeping and build Moomba floats from shoeboxes for his mother to judge. Pastor Starchenko said Don discovered Christianity in his early 20s, loved his faith and attending church, and read the Bible cover to cover at least once a year. “He read it and he lived it. He loved it and he taught it,” he said. Don and a mate were baptised at the bottom of the water slide at the Noble Park pool, the mourners heard. “We come here today knowing Don is with his friend and his saviour, Jesus Christ,” Pastor Starchenko said. Don worked for the Australian Tax Office for several years, including a stint in Canberra where he met his wife Jo. His story was that she spot-

AN IRAQ War veteran with a twitch led Ian Jones to a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder. The retired leading senior constable watched a video of a professor interviewing the soldier. “It was like looking at myself,” he said. “I ended up having these episodes of uncontrollable twitching. “Apparently it’s the body reacting to the collision through your subconscious.” The soldier had been exposed to an explosion. Mr Jones was injured in an horrific car crash in Dandenong North in 2012. On Friday 18 March he received the Victoria Police Star which is awarded to employees who are killed or seriously injured. “It was good to be recognised for the trauma and ending my career prematurely,” he said. The award prompted him to speak out about PTSD within the force. “People should not be too proud or afraid that Victoria Police will see them as being weak,” he said. “They must seek help from a professional because a critical incident will eventually have an impact on them, no matter how strong you are.” Mr Jones said the Victoria Police Academy taught officers in training to imagine what they would do in various situations. “They told us we’d act automatically - something to do with muscle memory,” he said. He said it was instances that officers didn’t predict which caused problems. “Something that happens with-
out warning,” he said. “I never anticipated a car coming around the corner on the wrong side of the road. “That was my unrehearsed incident in my repertoire of things that may happen. “I’ve had multiple nightmares. “If I’m driving, because of this I now rehearse all the time that a car coming towards me might hit me. “I’ve broken teeth because of it, because I grind my teeth.” Earlier this year he spent five weeks in the Austin Hospital being treated for PTSD. “I’m on the highest allowable dose of anti-depressants and mood stabilisers,” he said. Mr Jones retired in 2013 after 33 years as a police officer, including six years in New Zealand. “It’d always been a childhood dream to be a police officer,” he said. “It was challenging. Rewarding.” Mr Jones was on the morning shift the day of the car crash that ended his career, Thursday 8 November 2012. He was called to reports of a man threatening people in the street. “I knew it was an unusual job,” he said. “It was upgraded to a male threatening a person in a car with an iron bar. “An iron bar turned out to be a .22 rifle.” A Holden Statesman drove over the crest towards him as he pulled into the court. “So I blocked the path of that vehicle,” he said. “My partner tries to jump out and it goes around us and over the nature strip.
Retired Leading Senior Constable Ian Jones. 152095 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “As he shuts the door we see the Springvale van coming into the court. “I said on the radio ‘get that car’. “They get into a pursuit with the vehicle. “I don’t remember what happened after that. “Apparently he’s done a U-turn. “For some reason there was no radio communications about the Uturn or that he was coming back to us. “I was trying to catch up to the Springvale van. I was accelerating fairly quickly.” Victoria Police pursuit laws at the time mandated that officers terminate a chase if the suspect crossed to the wrong side of the road or exceeded 120 kilometres an hour. He believes the offender was familiar with the rules and deliberately crossed to the wrong side of the road. “The combined impact speed was 130 kilometres,” he said.
“I know it was a huge impact because I was knocked unconscious. “I remember hearing some blood-curdling screams. That was coming from the other car. “Apparently the driver had a broken pelvis and ankles. “The Statesman was bent in half. “Our engine was up against the windscreen.” Ian suffered a concussion and a back fracture that still requires epidural injections. “I can’t run. I can’t kick a football with my grandkids,” he said. “I don’t walk more than 200 metres.” He’s also battled financially, awaiting compensation. “The criminal only got 62 days imprisonment for it,” he said. “That was for possession of a firearm, drug trafficking because he had drugs on him as well, unlicensed driving, driving under the influence of drugs, plus driving manner dangerous causing serious injury.”

By CASEY NEILL TWO deaths at the Abbotts Road level crossing are being trivialised during debate about its removal, a disappointed Gabrielle Williams says. The Dandenong MP lost her grandmother in a car crash and said some businesses had been cynical about safety arguments. Some, she said, had made flippant remarks along the lines of “it’s only two people”. “Making light of those tragedies, or trying to diminish their significance in any way, particularly for the families of those victims, is not particularly
sensitive,” she said. “It’s pretty disappointing. “I just want to make sure in the discussions we’re having about this that we’re not being insensitive to others. “Behind those statistics are real people and real families.” A train passenger died at the crossing in 2012 after a truck careered through lowered boom gates. A motorist died when a train struck her car at the site four years earlier. Ms Williams said debate about the Level Crossing Removal Authority’s plan to close Abbotts Road at the rail line had

revolved around the impact on businesses and traffic. “I think into that debate there needs to be an injection of humanity about those issues,” she said. “Obviously, there have been deaths at the crossing. “There have also been a number of other accidents, I’ve been informed. “In a general sense, level crossings are a relic of the past that we know has been a contributor to road accidents and fatalities across the state. “Keeping the level crossing isn’t an option.“

Three-storey plan rejected By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A PROPOSED three-storey apartment building in one of Dandenong’s most history-laden residential streets has been knocked back by a planning tribunal. The nine-metre high building at 3 Macpherson Street would tower over the predominantly one and two-storey homes and gardens in an “attractive and intact streetscape”, according to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal member Geoffrey Rundell. But it wasn’t concerns for neighbourhood character that caused him to reject a planning permit on 11 March. The proposal was well within the constraints of a residential growth zone, which allows for four-storey buildings up to 13.5 metres tall and encourages substantial housing change. “The purposes of the zone deliberately do not refer to respecting or preserving the prevailing neighbourhood character,” Member Rundell said. “I am satisfied that a three-storey building is appropriate on this site.” Member Rundell rejected the proposal’s flawed design, which more reflected a concern for “yield” than good amenity. He agreed with Greater Dandenong Council, which originally rejected the plan, that the proposal didn’t present a “high quality, well-designed facade” to Macpherson Street.
The proposal didn’t have a suitable landscaping plan, the building’s front and side elevations were “unacceptable”, and its south elevation was “imposing and bland form that would detract from the streetscape”, Member Rundell stated.. “Having to screen all rooms facing south is excessive and symptomatic of a poor design response.” He stated a greater use of setbacks, horizontal louvres and 25 per cent transparent screening could limit views to the south. “I think better solutions can be found through improved design, including fewer dwellings,” he said. Red Gum Ward councillor Matthew Kirwan said the case highlighted the need for the council’s Amendment C182, which would put Macpherson Street and a ring of Dandenong streets in a more conservative zone. “This street, in particular, has a number of historic properties such as ‘The Ranges’,” he said. VCAT did not consider the amendment because at this stage it wasn’t a “seriously entertained proposal”. It had yet to be assessed by Planning Panels Victoria and Planning Minister Richard Wynne. Cr Kirwan estimated there was an “eightmonth window” for the developer to re-apply for a permit before the amendment would protect the site.

Dandenong High School students Manisha, Chethan, Manilka, Nivindu and Jeevan with their robot at Parliament House. DANDENONG High School students need to raise $36,000 to compete in an international robotics tournament in the United States. After the ball-throwing robot they built was successful at the world championship qualifier event in December, they’ve been invited to the 2016 VEX World Robotics Competition in Louisville, Kentucky, from 20 to 23 April. “The students here from Dandenong High are prime examples of what the future is going to look like for advanced manufacturing,” Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said at a Parliament House manufacturing showcase on 22 March. PASTOR Don Cameron’s memorial service on 23 March was filled with chuckle-worthy tales. The crowd heard that he was described at school as “especially bright but lazy” and he’d held onto those traits. He cooked barbecues at the local park rather than at home so he didn’t have to clean up.

DON had a number of near-death experiences, including falling 50 metres into a shallow pool of water at Cradle Mountain in early 1992. He’d been trying to rescue a wayward water bottle and escaped with only a sore leg. THE pastor one day turned all the clocks in his share house to 3pm while housemate Rob slept. He woke up him, told him he’d slept through the day and that he’d saved him
ONE mourner told the Journal that when he lived in the US for a time pre-internet, Don would send him the sports pages every week so he could keep up with his teams. PASTOR Wally Starchenko said Don’s love of wrestling came in handy when dealing with people causing trouble at Cornerstone. A fellow Cornerstone member helped him to escape from a knife-wielding thief in a dark Dandenong alley, after Don gave chase to retrieve an item stolen from the centre. DANDENONG Park’s sound shell temporarily became an alcohol-free zone - at least in writing. On 23 March, the Stan Prior sound shell was fenced off, displaying a bright-yellow noalcohol sign. It didn’t seem to deter a man enjoying a ‘goon bag’ breakfast at a picnic table metres away. Nor the site’s tradie who, after a half-day of hard work, thought he deserved some liquid refreshments. At 1pm, he arrived back with a slab of VB - which he kindly shared among some of the park’s regular drinkers. A WOMAN left an unusual calling card for her ex-husband, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. Having tracked the ex down to his new girlfriend’s home, the woman left the following in the letter box: chewing gum, gamblers literature and a torn portion of their marriage certificate. She was clearly in breach of a full intervention order. To make matters worse, she gave police doctored documents to try to show she was in hospital at the time. The judge took into account the woman’s list of physical ailments and fined her $2400.

Councillor Sean O'Reilly, Greater Dandenong mayor Heang Tak and Keysborough MP Martin Pakula inspect the Tatterson Reserve pavilion plans. 151861
Set for start By CASEY NEILL

To find out more call or visit:
WITH the final piece of its funding puzzle in place, Tatterson Park’s long-awaited new pavilion will start to emerge in July. Keysborough MP Martin Pakula announced a $650,000 Community Sports Infrastructure Fund grant at the Keysborough park, on Monday 21 March. He also announced a $100,000 grant for Alex Nelson Reserve Pavilion in Springvale South. Mr Pakula said the Federal Government and City of Greater Dandenong had also contributed cash to the projects. The near-$10 million Tatterson Park pavilion project will include eight changerooms, a function room, community
meeting rooms and a 500-seat grandstand. Dandenong City and Thunder soccer clubs and the Dandenong Stingrays AFL side are among the reserve’s users and portable changerooms are onsite at the moment to meet demand. “Sport has the power to engage, connect and unite people in our community,” Mr Pakula said. “These grants will deliver the great sporting facilities that participants of all abilities will be able to enjoy.” Greater Dandenong mayor Heang Tak was thrilled that construction could now go ahead. “Council has done a lot of work to have this project ready to go,” he said.
The council’s sport and recreation co-ordinator Sue Appleton said it was five years or more in the making. She said construction would start in July and should wrap up by the end of next year, and that groups were already asking about using the new spaces. Ms Appleton said cricket and soccer clubs would benefit from the $1.4 million Alex Nelson Reserve project. She said its main aim was to improve changeroom facilities to increase female participation. Detailed design is now underway, she said, and the project will hopefully go out to tender in September or October. Depending on the council’s budget allocations, construction could start in November and be finished by next March.

Located on the corner of Glasscocks and Berwick-Clyde roads, Narre Warren South, ‘Berwick Lakes’ has something for everyone. The estate offers two-bedroom and three-bedroom units either with single or double garages with facades that range from modern to period style homes – these units are a standout. ‘Berwick Lakes’ is close to shopping centres, medical centre, cafes and restaurants, sporting facilities and a short stroll away from parks and lakes. Families have the option of primary and secondary schools in the vacinity. Public transport and access to the Monash Freeway is nearby. Every unit is complete with full turn-key pack inclusions such as dishwasher,
split-system air-conditioner, gas ducted heating, remote-controlled garage door and stainless-steel appliances throughout. All units will be completed with inclusions, so moving in is no fuss. Due to overwhelming interest in the development, only a handful of units remain in the 51-unit development, there is limited opportunity for you to get your hands on prime real estate in this sought after area. With prices starting from $380,000, buyers would have trouble finding more affordable living in this location with such features and inclusions. For further inquiries and a full list of inclusions and plans contact Gary Doleschal at Premier Builders Group on 0418 990 379.

From the first By CASEY NEILL FROM Australia’s first homemade Holden to its last, the Dandenong Valley All Holden Street Car Show will have it all. The eighth annual Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills event will roll into Dandenong on Sunday 3 April. The inaugural event attracted 40 cars and brought in $2000. The number of cars on show had last year grown to about 500, with entries pouring in from across Victoria and interstate, and fund-raising topped $24,000. A 1948 FX Holden - the first of the make manufactured in
Australia - will this year be on display alongside one of the last Australian-built Commodores. There’ll be entertainment, kids’ activities, a Rotary barbecue and other food vendors, a performance from band The Infernos and a visit from Melbourne Transformers. Judging will this year include an extra category, Built by Holden but not a Holden, to cover Chevs and Buicks that had Australian-built bodies by what was then Holden’s Motor Body Builders Ltd which started in 1919. It will be among 50 trophies awarded on the day for Holdens ranging from immaculate original to highly modified.
Money raised will support community programs including Hand Brake Turn, Casey North Community Centre, Big Brother Big Sister, Operation Newstart Dandenong and Casey, Teenage Road Accident Group (TRAG), Life Education and Livvi’s Place at Marriott Waters. The show will be held at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong, from 9am to 3pm. Entry is $5 for adults and free for children aged under 16. BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
New link into China trade By CASEY NEILL A NEW partnership will help Greater Dandenong businesses tap into China’s eCommerce market. The State Government announced a deal with Australia Post and Chinese online marketplace Tmall at an eCommerce in China seminar on Wednesday 9 March. Small Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Philip Dalidakis said it would allow businesses to sell direct to
consumers in the world’s largest economy without leaving their homes. Last financial year Tmall sales were up 68 per cent on the previous year, exceeding $170 billion dollars. The Chinese eCommerce market is the world’s largest, with an estimated 649 million internet users spending more than $250 billion dollars each year. Greater Dandenong Council’s business group manager Paul Kearsley was at the seminar.
“Through the systems that the Victorian Government has just set up, with a partnership approach, that allows businesses in our region to access that market without having to go through all the hurdles of registering their business in China, setting up an office in China,” he said. “They can literally, as far as I understand it, just put it on Tmall Global. “There’s a massive opportunity here for small and medium enterprises to offer their services and their prod-
ucts directly to China. “We’ve just got to be part of it.” Mr Kearsley visited Nanjing twice last year. “We were taken to a couple of other companies that were specialising in eCommerce,” he said. “It was very evident to me, and also to the businesses that I took, that eCommerce was a huge opportunity to businesses in the Greater Dandenong area.”
He will ask the State Government to provide information and, potentially, workshops to help Greater Dandenong businesses to understand their opportunities. “They also might be interested in listening to speakers with examples and case studies of how they’ve gone about it,” he said. “Business to business is always the best way that we can get the information out.”

Leaders in the making By JARROD POTTER LEADING Dandenong into the new TAC Cup season will be a pair of peninsula prospects. Stingrays co-captains Luke Dalmau (Somerville/Haileybury) and Liam Mckay (EdithvaleAspendale) have been picked by their peers to guide the side through the season and were announced at the club’s jumper presentation on Tuesday night. The Stingrays chose to go with a two-captain approach once again after Lachie Williams stood as the sole captain in 2015. Rounding out the leadership group are vicecaptains Thomas Jok (Beaconsfield), Josh Battle (Doveton) and Myles Poholke (Sorrento), while the deputy vice-captains are Mason de Wit (Mt Eliza) and Max Kleverkamp (Sorrento). Dalmau didn’t get to feature in much action last season - playing two games early on for the Stingrays - but he was a constant presence in the group and felt the impact of its leaders like Williams and draftees Jacob Weitering and Kieran Collins. “It’s obviously an honour to be voted in by my peers and something I won’t take for granted during the year and hopefully I can work well with Liam Mckay as well,” Dalmau said. “We had some really good leaders last year in Lachie, Weiters and Collo - I learnt a lot from them and especially with Weiters the off-field stuff. “That professionalism that all the recruiters said about him and they were absolutely right. “Lachie was just inspirational on and off it too and was best mates with Collo so it was awesome.” Dalmau is ready to get his teeth sunk into TAC Cup footy, which kicks off Saturday afternoon in Traralgon as the Stingrays battle regional rivals Gippsland.

Back: Myles Poholke, Craig Black (coach), Mason de Wit. Absent: Liam Mckay. 151979 Pictures: JARROD POTTER He wants to up the intensity around the group and make sure the Stingrays start strong and stay the course throughout 2016. “Want to bring in a bit of hard-nosed grunt,” Dalmau said. “I don’t want to really be on the back foot from the start - I want us to be a really aggressive side and hopefully this weekend we can take it up to Gippy.”
Stingrays coach Craig Black thought Dalmau and Mckay would grow into the roles and make them their own. “I think it’s really good having young kids that can develop into leaders - at under-age footy it’s hard to find someone who is just going to come out and be the next Jonathan Brown, but this is the stepping stone for it,” Black said.
“We challenge them and think they’re players who can set the right example on and off the field and if the players vote them in, then these guys are settling a great example and it’s a good start.” Dandenong faced Gippsland at Traralgon Recreation Reserve on Saturday. For more on the match, visit the Dandenong Journal website www.dandenong.starcommunity.com.au.
Winners make their presence felt By JARROD POTTER CAPPING off an exceptional return to Dandenong Basketball Stadium this summer, Rangers guard Steph Cumming picked up two major awards this week. Cumming, 25, from Endeavour Hills, didn’t miss a beat in her return to the green-and-gold as she was the constant presence that held the side together as injuries plagued the Rangers’ 2015/16 campaign. Playing in every clash, Cumming was instrumental in the club returning to the finals for the sixth consecutive WNBL season as she averaged 15.8 points, four rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, including eight games over 20 points in her 2015/16 campaign. “She was just super consistent all year - I think her game really improved and she did it up both ends,” Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson said. “She took on that extra responsibility - we needed her scoring and she then took on a key defensive assignment each game and I thought she improved a lot.” It adds to the WNBL Defensive Player of the Year award she was awarded earlier in the week by the league and she also finished sixth in the league MVP voting. Another Rangers’ 2015/16 recruit Sara Blicavs was given the Coaches Award by Larissa Anderson for a stellar year in her return to Stud Road. Speaking of returns, Jacinta Kennedy capped off an amazing revival after 10 years away from the WNBL courts and was duly rewarded with the Janine Fielder Award as the “player’s player”.
Endeavour Hills Cricket Club vice president Tom Hollis, junior cricketer Lachlan Hollis and Gabrielle Williams MP celebrate $100,000 in funding for Sydney Pargeter Reserve.
Works to help club make the grade Dandenong Rangers celebrated its award winners on Tuesday night. Left to right: Steph Cumming (MVP), Sara Blicavs (Coaches Award), Jacinta Kennedy (Janine Fielding Award) and Amelia Todhunter Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS (Defensive Player of the Year). 151941 “The girls got it spot on - got a lot of wonderful girls in the team but it’s well documented that we’re lucky to have someone of Sinno’s (Kennedy) calibre,” Anderson said. “She stepped in as our starting five man and cemented that role - she’s not a five man in the national league and did a great job for us. “She’s an utmost professional and first to pick anyone up and I think that award was perfect for her.” Stepping up to fill the starting guard role - with Aimie Clydesdale injured early on - Amelia Todhunter was named Dandenong’s Defensive Player
of the Year after taking to any defensive task throughout the season. All told it made for a memorable Rangers’ season and Anderson believes there is a lot left on the horizon that this team can achieve. “Thankful for the support we got on and off the court with our supporters and we’ve also got wonderful past players around the club now." “Really happy to be around and, for me, it couldn’t be more special to have those sorts of people besides me supporting the girls. We’ve got an exciting group and I think the Rangers can be a force to be reckoned with.”
ENDEAVOUR Hills Cricket Club is set to soar into the 2016/17 cricket season with grading works on its four ovals slated for this winter. The state government has boosted Endeavour Hills Cricket Club’s long-term outcome with the announcement of a $100,000 grant from the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund to upgrade cricket facilities at Sydney Pargeter Reserve. The four cricket ovals will be reconstructed by re-levelling the ground, converting to warm season grass as well as improving drainage and installing synthetic pitches. Endeavour Hills Cricket Club vice president Tom Hollis thought the resurfacing was a boon for the Eagles, especially to go hand in hand with the pavilion redevelopment at the ground recently. “We’re absolutely ecstatic something we’ve been hoping to get over the line for a while and rapt to be able to improve our junior grounds and get the synthetic pitches on,” Hollis said.
“It’s all about improving and making sure we’ve got facilities that any standard of cricketer would enjoy - especially our juniors so we can be seen as a team that juniors want to play at in within the south-east.” Hollis believed the works would start by the end of the year and would not infringe on the 2016/17 season. The Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the funds would ensure the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club had the use of new, top quality playing surfaces well into the future for its teams in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA) and Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA). “We have delivered the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club the great sporting facilities they deserve,” Ms. Williams said. “They love their sport in Dandenong and this fabulous project will mean participants of all abilities will be able to strut their stuff at a facility they can be proud of.”

Rays battle bravely By JARROD POTTER
Krish Rajavel surged to the line in the 400m to earn a state bronze medal for Dandenong Little Athletics Centre.
YOUTH GIRLS CHALLENGE SOUTHERN ROUND 1 ILLNESS, injury and over-possession proved the three prongs of Dandenong’s Youth Girls Challenge 2.3 (15) to 3.5 (23) defeat at the hands of Sandringham. With eight first-choice players on the sidelines for injury or illness, it left the Stingrays no choice but to blood its rookies and hope for the best battling the Dragons. Dandenong had more than enough of the ball despite the up-hill battle though. Plenty of opportunities were generated by the midfield, but Dandenong recklessly booted away and gave Sandringham an endless stream of turnovers. Dandenong then tackled Sandringham into oblivion to make amends for the miskicks, but were scarcely rewarded any free kicks for phenomenal pressure, run-down tackles or the Dragons constantly squandering prior opportunity. As hard as the Stingrays would fight to gain possession, it would be for naught as the Dragons’ direct route to the scoreboard proved much more effective. Neither side could muster much scoreboard pressure in the conditions at Frankston Park as both sides mopped up defensively when kicking against the howling gale.

score-wise, as the side mustered a single point even with the wind as Sandringham raced away to kick the two match-winning goals. “We didn’t take our chances and I think their top end players - Katherine Smith, Isabel Huntington were too good and a class above,” Stingrays coach Scott Gowans said. “They really controlled the game and we really couldn’t control them. “We really played the bottom end of our list - we had a lot of girls we wanted to see and weren’t sure of their positions, so we probably have nine players who would fit straight into our best 18. “That’s a positive, but I thought their endeavour and pressure acts were good and when we played to our structure they actually moved the ball OK.” The loss leaves Dandenong battling to stay alive in the finals race - part of the problem of a short-andsharp season. Dandenong now has a must winmatch against Geelong Western on Saturday morning from 10am if the Stingrays stand any chance of making the top-team semi-finals. Gippsland on the opposite hand had a thrilling come-from-behind win over Geelong Western to take the 5.6 (36) to 3.6 (24) victory. DANDENONG STINGRAYS Goals: S. Ryan, B. Struylaart. Best: J. Grierson, G. Walker, E. Browning, B. Kennedy, S. Ryan, E. Rylance.
But Sandringham endured, going as far to kick a goal against the buffeting sea-breeze in the second term and holding Dandenong scoreless in the final quarter. Stingrays captain Georgia Walker - who was meant to be rested for this game, but was called in because of the numerous unavailable players - absolutely starred. Her efforts in the midfield caused headaches for the Dragons throughout the game and set up at least the first goal to Brooke Struylaart. Soon after Sam Ryan marked and goaled to push Dandenong to a three-point margin, a gap that would
be held throughout a deadlocked and scoreless third term. In the best match up of the afternoon, Walker went toe-to-toe with All Australian and Vic Metro star Katherine Smith through the final term as the two showed no sign of easing up against each other. The physicality stepped up another level across the board approaching the final siren as Dandenong barrelled in to the packs and forced Sandringham to up their intensity as well. But Dandenong’s use of the ball didn’t amount to anything tangible
growth now - as it’s opened up the community.” The Thunder was keen to get the side up and running and now that it’s in place, Bekim believes there is no limit on the club’s possible success in the competition. “We’ve had a couple of practice games and there are a lot more women we’re seeing at the games - the club is really excited about branching out into women’s teams and obviously in the future having a WNPL women’s team is the main goal.” On top of the open-age women’s side - set to kick off its inaugural campaign on 10 April against Bayside Argonauts - the Thunder also has an under-12 girls’ team ready to make an impact on the field. While they’re a young side - with a lot of teenagers making up the Thunder’s inaugural senior squad Bekim thinks the red-and-black brigade can cause a lot of headaches in the first FFV campaign.

Wind beneath Girls' team gets set for its state debut their wings BRINGING home a couple of medals to cap off summer, Dandenong Little Athletics Centre was led by the girls at the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships. Backing up her success at the regionals, Dandenong’s under-9 field star Kyana Gordon finished third in the girls discus - with a best of 18.54m in the championships which were held last week at Casey Fields. The running events were a lot harder for the athletes at the wind-swept, cold venue on Saturday, but Krish Rajavel proved to be the other Dandenong athlete to star at the meet. Rajavel crossed the line in 1.04.13 to claim bronze in the under-12 girls 400m run. Jake Allen, Nicholas Allsop and Brammashan Kajendra were the other athletes from the centre to qualify and participate in the state championships. Dandenong now gears up for cross country season with the winter-running events starting on 7 May. For more information on joining the centre, which is based at Robert Booth Reserve in Dandenong, email dandenong@lavic.com.au or call 9794 6502.
By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG Thunder has always been a powerhouse on the soccer pitch but that’s been just in the men’s ranks. That’s all changing this year with the introduction of a women’s side to George Andrews Reserve set to debut in the FFV State League 4 South competition next month. Thunder women’s coach Eva Bekim has seen the dramatic shift in perception towards female participation in only one generation and is excited to see where the women’s game can go. “When I was growing up it was just one team and didn’t have the option of playing under-12 and under-14s,” Bekim said. “I think the Matildas’ success has contributed to the girls wanting to play and increase in females playing soccer in general. “But it’s really good to see the
“Absolutely - they’re really keen and strong on the ball and got a couple of tall under-14s who can hold it up so that would be good,” Bekim said. “I think they’ll play through the middle, congesting the midfield rather than playing down the line, so the game can come from there. “With the recent practice games we learned quickly that playing
down the line won’t cut it.” The State League 4 team is searching for a goalkeeper and spots are also available in the under-12 girls team. Big brother to the popular 500, the Fiat 500X moves in family wagon field. leather can be part of the pack. Even the key fob can be ordered in five different designs. Our test 500X was in glowing white with red door mirrors and stripes in the same bright hue on the lower areas of the doors, best of all is the red-and-white 500X decal stretching most of the way along the roof. You have to be tall to see this feature but it looked brilliant when viewed beneath our balcony at home - particularly with a nice cappuccino in hand... The range starts at $28,000 for the 500X Pop with front-wheel-drive and a six-speed manual gearbox and rises to $39,000 for the all-wheeldrive 500X Cross Plus with automatic transmis-
sion. In between are the Pop Star (great name!) at $33,000 and the Lounge for $38,000. The 500X Pop can be specified with a sixspeed dual-clutch auto for an added $2000, the automatic is standard in the Pop Star. The AWD models, the Lounge and Cross Plus, have a nine-speed automatic. Equipment levels are high to justify the prices. Even the entry level 500X Pop has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch TFT instrument display, cruise control, paddle shifts on the automatic, Fiat’s Uconnect system with a 5.0-inch touchscreen, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity.

AT THE end of 2015 Fiat expanded its 500 range with the introduction of a crossover called the 500X. Significantly bigger than the standard Fiat 500 it has more interior space, utilised through the convenience of rear doors. The Fiat 500X was designed in conjunction with the new Jeep Renegade. Italian Fiat now controls Jeep after the American company got into financial trouble during the GFC. There’s a nice combination of Italian style and American 4WD knowhow in this partnership. Fiat 500X as tested this week is an all-wheeldrive (AWD) Cross Plus, rather than a true 4WD in the manner of a Jeep. Should you not need AWD the Fiat 500X also comes with 2WD, through the front wheels, at a lower cost. Visually, the Fiat 500X is an expanded version of the 500 with a family resemblance to its baby brother at the front, in various details around the body, and in its funky interior. The latter has the pseudo metallic look that appeals to all Fiat lovers. Cross Plus is easily identified by the protection bars front and rear, with further body mouldings around its wheelarches and on the sills. Like its little brother, the 500X is offered in a huge variety of colours and you can choose from a large range of accessories to permit personalisation. There are 12 body colours, 15 dress-up decals, nine choices of door mirror covers, five doorsill inserts, five alloy wheel designs, fabrics and
