THE CROCKETT Group is as committed to the Edgewater Resort development in Warburton as they have ever been, according to a spokesman for the group. Paul Little, town planning consultant on the Edgewater project, told the Mail last week that talk of a stalemate between the Upper Yarra River Reserve Committee and Crockett Group over a lease of a section of Crown land needed to meet bushfire protection requirements, was baseless. Yarra Ranges Council in January this year voted to write to the Minister for Planning to seek his intervention to resolve what they said was an inability of the UYRRC (who act on behalf of the DELWP - Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning) and the developer to agree on a lease. The UYRRC had offered a 10-year lease, but the council had called for a 21-year lease in line with the CFA’s recommendation to achieve the defendable space required. Last week, UYRRC president, Gordon Buller, told the Mail his committee had agreed to the 10-year lease, but had been formally requested to extend it to 21 years in December 2015. Mr Buller said the committee had unanimously resolved to process a non-exclusive lease of the defendable space for 21 years which would be processed when agreement was reached with the developer on a number of outstanding issues. They included pegging the Edgewater boundary to allow them and a vegetation consultant to assess the area to be leased, secure the security fence, remove rubble from reserve and controlling weeds to prevent weed infestation into the river reserve. Mr Buller said they were proposing that the Valuer-General set the licence fee. Mr Little said while relevant licences were in place to allow them to carry out certain work on the project, including access to the crown land in

Labelling frozen berries By KATH GANNAWAY A SEVILLE-EAST company is leading the way in food labelling of frozen berries and other fruit. A year on from the Hepatitus A scare around frozen imported berries, Matilda’s, founded by third-generation strawberry farmers Matt and Ruth Gallace, have expanded their operation to meet an increasing demand for locally grown frozen berries. The fruit comes from the family’s Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm which has 800 acres of farmland in Victoria and Queensland. They also buy in fruit from other Australian growers. Ms Gallace said while the imported berries scare and the resulting increase in demand for safe and verifiable frozen fruit was the impetus behind their move, it was a big decision requiring a huge financial investment. “We had been doing frozen berries for a while, but there was not really the demand at that stage for commercial quantities,” Ms Gallace said. When they did take the plunge, setting up a purpose-built factory at the Seville-East farm, they saw transparent labelling as a critical element in building the brand, and in building trust in the product. Ms Gallace said she has a bit of a giggle when people ask how long it took to get the first batch of commercial berries from the farm to the supermarket refrigerators. “It was a whole new level of production,” she said. “It took us longer than we thought. “We had already been value-adding with our fruit wines and ciders, so initially we looked at what components we could do ourselves, and what use we could make of the existing facility. “We realised however that we didn’t

THE Millgrove Resident’s Action Group (MRAG) has welcomed the announcement of a new footpath for the town. Councillor Jim Child attended the group’s 23 March meeting to make the announcement and to congratulate them on the Millgrove Community Plan they put together in 2015. MRAG Secretary, Bob Lillie, said the plan involved a significant proportion of the community and clearly sets out the community’s priorities and aspirations which includes new footpaths and trails. He said Cr Child advised the meeting that Yarra Ranges Council has spent around $800,000 on footpaths in the O’Shannassy Ward, including several new paths in Millgrove.
Woori Yallock grass fires POLICE are asking residents to be wary of firebugs, after a number of small grass fires were lit in Woori Yallock over the Easter weekend. Belgrave Police Sergeant, Carolyn Sunderland, told the Mail that at 5.30pm on Saturday, 26 March, witnesses noticed seven small grassfires in scrubland near a creek in Woori Yallock. Sgt Sunderland said the fires were between one and three metres in diameter, and all within the space of about 200 metres. She said the fires had burned “for several hours”, but had not spread due to cool winds. The fires were extinguished, and anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Reading labels has become part of life for the family and Ms Gallace said she struggles to shop for her daughter with 95 per cent of products labelled as “may contain traces of ...”. They know in fact that it may be much less, but the labelling covers the manufacturer. “What we say is that our fruit is grown, washed and packed on machin-
ery used exclusively for fruit. “We want to provide information for people to make an informed choice,” Ms Gallace said. The company is now sourcing other fruit from growers around Australia with whom the family has established long-standing relationships over the past 50 years of farming. As with the strawberries they grow themselves, Ms Gallace said the new range will list the exact region where the fruit is sourced. In response to Federal Government moves on origin labelling, Ms Gallace said while having a percentage of Australian food listed on the product is a start, they would like to see more pro-
ducers list exactly where all of the products in the packet come from. “We shouldn’t have uncertainty about origin,” she said. While it’s early days for the expansion into commercial production, Ms Gallace said the response has been fantastic, especially from consumers. “Aside from the fact that people want to buy Australian grown, they say it’s about the quality and knowing what they are buying.” Matilda's could also provide a boost to Yarra Valley growers. “We have our own wonderful fruit, and long-standing relationships, but we welcome enquiries from other growers,” she said.

A WANTIRNA man will face court for three burglaries in Lilydale, after being busted by Yarra Ranges police last Wednesday. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that on Wednesday, 23 March, police arrested a 25-year-old Wantirna man. The man was arrested after three burglaries that occurred on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 March. Det Sgt Woods said the man is believed to have tried to steal a car from the owner of one of the properties, who confronted the man. Police then located the man, arresting and charging him for the three burglaries. He will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

POLICE are calling for witnesses after a break-in and attempted theft from JB Hi-Fi in Chirnside Park on Wednesday morning. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that at 1.50am on Wednesday, 23 March, four men forced their way into the Maroondah Highway store and attempted to steal electronic goods. Det Sgt Woods said the men tried to steal electronics, phones and tablet computers, but were unsuccessful. “However, we have concerns that they may reoffend,” she said. Friends, family and business owners attended the shave, which was live-streamed online, with Vanessa from Haircutters Gallery chopping off his blond locks to a round of applause. Jack said that he had raised more than $1000 by the time of the shave, and many attendees handed the freshly-shaved boy $20 and $50 notes to add to the total. Jarrydâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event at Grind Nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Groove on 12 March saw him cutting his hair for the first time in 10 years, and losing his bushy beard. In a super-charged campaign, Cody raised most of the money from donations, pushing total from $2030 to over $5000 on shave day with a $500 donation from Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink and $1000 from a family friend. A sausage sizzle, raffles and hair colouring added to the tally. Cody, who had grown his hair for three-and-a-half years, dedicated the shave to his Nan who passed away from cancer, and a family member who is battling the disease. Callum had enormous support
from the Yellingbo Primary School where the shave took place on Friday 11 March. The Grade 4 student chased sponsorship and donations and the Junior School Council held a Funky Hair Day to add to the bottom line. Callum kept the money pouring in even after the shave, taking donations from anyone keen to run their hands over his new spikey hair. Jack, Cody, Jarryd and Callum are among more than 150,000 who have signed on in March to support people with blood cancer and fund research. The Victorian tally as of today

Council’s tower call “Chum Creek and Badger Creek ... already have incredibly limited coverage, given how urban some of those areas are,” she said. “There were almost total outages in those areas today. “It’s proven again that we really need to improve the telecommunication infrastructure in those areas.” The motion, which was unanimously passed by councillors, also approved a financial contribution of $10,000 for each site that was successfully chosen through the program. Cr Jim Child seconded the motion and said that improving mobile coverage in the Upper Yarra region was about “the whole telecommunications package”, citing a co-located mobile site in Yarra Junction and a pole to be erected in Millgrove by September. Both he and Cr McAllister said that improving the mobile coverage would assist in emergencies, such as bushfires. “I think what we’re doing at the moment, over the last three years, is really increasing that capacity, especially for the Upper Yarra - and, of course, in Cr McAllister’s Ryrie ward as well,” he said. “For the Upper Yarra to have that high rating ... that we live in the most dangerous place in Victoria, if not Australia, to have this support and to have the outcomes, as far as we’re getting in the Black Spot Program, it’s money well-invested.”

Committee stumps up for hall said when local publicans John and Ronnie Edwards retired and moved on after looking after the hall for more than 30 years, it left a big gap. “John and Ronnie managed to keep the hall going despite running their own business and having very little time at their disposal, and their efforts were certainly very much appreciated,” Ms Adams said. Ultimately the committee hopes to promote the church and the hall as a combined wedding package, along with increased community use for all types of events and celebrations. The first job is restumping the floor
By KATH GANNAWAY A NEW committee is working to ensure that the Powelltown Hall is in top condition to continue to provide a meeting place for the local community. The first hall built in the small timber town would have been 100 this year, but it was pulled down and the current hall was built in 1922. The same committee that took on the job of restoring and managing the town’s historic church has now adopted the hall and they are keen to have it looking as good as the church across the paddock. Committee member, Dawn Adams,
and proceeds from events such as the country market coming up on Sunday, 10 April, will help build the restoration fund. The market is more like a festival with food, stalls, including old-style cake stalls, live country rock music, face painting and a jumping castle, in a traditional bush setting. THE YARRA Ranges Council will lobby the Federal Government for three new mobile phone towers around the valley, following Tuesday’s council meeting. On Tuesday, 22 March, Yarra Ranges councillors unanimously agreed to advocate for mobile phone towers in Reefton, Chum Creek and Badger Creek, under the Mobile Black Spot Program. The program, which saw new towers announced for Steels Creek and East Warburton in June last year, is now open for its second round of funding, with expressions of interest due by 29 April. Cr Fiona McAllister moved the motion to advocate for the towers, and said Yarra Ranges ticked “all of the boxes” for the program, with coverage in the three areas patchy or non-existent. “It’s not just looking for communities of need around emergency management - we certainly tick all the boxes in that regard - but it’s also looking for areas where there’s high-volume seasonal visitation,” she said. “Luckily, in Yarra Ranges, we also meet those criteria as well.” Cr McAllister said it was “quite ironic” that the item came to council that night, as Telstra services had widespread outages during the day, including to the Yarra Ranges Council’s lines.

Wrong number IT'S nice to see the (Yarra Ranges) Council moving with the times. In the bad old days, a few short months ago, when you rang them up with a simple question, someone invariably answered the phone: no delay, no queue, and answered your question. Just took a minute. Thankfully, they’ve got rid of that efficient way of doing things. They now have a brand-new automated system of menus and robots and jingles and ad-
vertisements that keeps you hanging for ages and ends up with another robot saying they’ll call back. So you simply have to loiter near the phone rather than going back out the paddock or wherever you would rather be. I assume this cost a bit. So if ever you wonder where your rates go, a fair bit went down the gurgler here; setting up a system that doesn’t work, raises blood pressure and makes you swear at the phone. Gillians Rainbow Bridge program is about children and animals coming together in a mutual process of positive change. The school holiday program opens the gates even wider, inviting kids of all ages to get involved in a variety of creative workshops, as well as plenty of farm time. The program includes making a beautiful seat for the Children’s Garden (29 March and 5 April), and making a mosaic stepping stone (6 April).

Fluoride for strong choppers
By JESSE GRAHAM A SUMMIT that saw Marysville host representatives from 28 rural Victorian councils earlier this month has been hailed a success, with delegates forming ideas to “future-proof” their communities. The Rural Councils Victoria (RCV) Rural Summit was held in Marysville from Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 March, drawing about 130 councillors, CEOs, business and industry representatives to the area. Over three days, the delegates discussed the theme of this year’s summit Future Proofing Our Communities, with speakers including the Gruen Transfer’s Russel Howcroft, CEO of Emergent Solutions, Holly Ransom and Northern Victoria MLC Jaclyn Symes, among others. Murrindindi Shire Council mayor Margaret Rae said the event was “fantastic” and that it was the first of the rural summits held in the shire, at the Vibe Hotel. Cr Rae said that sustainability and building more resilient communities were some of the topics raised during the summit, as well as challenges into the future, such as delivering services to “increasing diverse” communities. Cr Rae said that some rural shires were working together to share their services, to keep costs down to be able to meet the challenges. “The same mix will not work for everybody, but if you can find similar shires with the same sort of needs with whom you can work collaboratively to deliver services, that will help to minimise the cost, and help to increase the productivity around that as well,” she said. She said environmentally sustainable measures, such as more electronic service delivery, as well as replacing street light bulbs with energy-saving bulbs, would also mean less cost to council and ratepayers. “While that doesn’t give you cash

Another of the initiatives discussed at the summit was communicating with communities, and Cr Rae said there was an expectation that the community wanted to be involved in decision-making. She said that setting parameters and engaging residents from the beginning of an initiative was a “very successful”
way of improving services and their delivery. “Because councils, no matter who they are, can’t do it all,” Cr Rae said. “Most good initiatives come from communities, and councils are increasingly asking, in that context of facilitating what the community wants to achieve. “That’ll be a much more powerful way of doing it.”
THE Australian Dental Association has reminded Yarra Valley residents to take care of their teeth, with almost 30,000 residents not receiving fluoride from their drinking water. The Mail contacted the Australian Dental Association’s Victorian Branch (ADAVB), after learning that water taken from the valley’s two reservoirs is not treated with fluoride. In Yarra Valley Water’s Drinking Water Quality Report 2014/2015 lists water from the Maroondah and Upper Reservoirs not being treated with fluoride before being directed to households. A spokesperson for Yarra Valley Water confirmed that “Yarra Valley towns, Healesville and Yarra Glen areas are not fluoridated,” and said fluoridation is decided by the Department for Health and Human Services (DHHS). Victorian DHHS spokesperson, Bram Alexander said that about 28,000 people in the Yarra Ranges Shire, who are connected to reticulated drinking water, do not receive fluoridated water. Lilydale, Monbulk, Montrose and Seville are serviced by the Silvan Reservoir, which has fluorida-

tion as part of its water treatment. Mr Alexander said that “water infrastructure agreements” determined where fluoride plants were built, and that the department was in discussion with water businesses “to identify suitable opportunities to extend water fluoridation, where and when it is feasible to do so”. The Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB)’s president, Dr Stephen Liew said that access to water fluoridation helps to protect against teeth decay for people of all ages. He said more than 90 per cent of Victorians had access to fluoridated water, but that the entire state would “never be totally fluoridated”, due to costs or impracticalities in bringing fluoridated water to small communities, or farmland. “ADAVB understands that there are towns supplied from the Upper Yarra and Maroondah Reservoirs that do not pass a water fluoridation plant and therefore do not receive fluoride,” Dr Liew said. “It is important to look after your teeth through healthy eating, regular brushing, appropriate use of fluoridated toothpaste, minimising sugar and regular dental check-ups.” For more information about dental health, visit www.ada.org.au.

Eggs go with sausages By KATH GANNAWAY SPECTACULAR autumn weather, two great bands, sizzling sausages, Easter eggs and a bumper crop of visitors ... Warburton couldn’t have asked for any more for their big Easter weekend. The caravan park set the ball rolling with Easter activities for locals and visitors on the Saturday and the Annual Easter Fund-raiser took over on the Sunday with The Yarra River Band and The Mason Boys providing a great afternoon of live music and dancing on the football oval. Organiser John Seegers said they couldn’t have asked for a better day.
“It was just a really excellent day and a lot of people said it was the best show we’ve had,” he said. Mr Seegers said Warburton was ‘chock-a-block’ with visitors over the Easter long weekend and the two events had become very much part of the Warburton Easter experience for many of the regular visitors. Money raised came from raffles with a beautiful hamper donated by the local lolly shop among the prizes, a sausage sizzle run by Warburton Primary School and the ever-popular face-painting. Proceeds of the day will go to the Warburton Sporting Club and the Primary School with some small donations to other local groups.

Consequences for life By JESSE GRAHAM PARAMEDIC and Yarra Ranges mayor, Jason Callanan, is asking young drivers to think of the consequences of bad driving behaviour, following a road safety forum in Lilydale. The Road Safety Forum, run by RoadWHYZ Victoria, was held at Mount Lilydale Mercy College on Wednesday, 23 March, bringing about 30 young people and their parents to the school’s hall. Cr Callanan, who is also RoadWHYZ Victoria’s director, said he opened the evening, and spoke about what happened when paramedics were called out to road crashes, and crashes he had personally attended. Former Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) Sergeant, Geoff Exton, then spoke about his role in investigating serious crashes and road deaths, and about the seriousness of culpable driving offences. “You can get 20 years for killing a person in a car, and for a lot of people, that’s their life,” Cr Callanan said. "He also explained some of the consequences, gave a good insight into how police investigated, and explained to them exactly how they were able to find out how people moved inside a car, the speed they were doing, the force of impact." James Wood then spoke to the attendees about how he crashed a truck, rolling down an embankment, after going too quickly and not wearing a seatbelt - and ended up permanently confined to a wheelchair. “So he talked about the ongoing issues he had, the restricted freedom we all take for granted - hopping on a pushbike, getting on a plane,” Cr Callanan said. A nurse, Julie Crowley, then explained basic life support skills that the young drivers could use, if they found themselves in a crash, or coming across one. Cr Callanan said that Ms Crowley went through the DRABC (Danger, Respond, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) first aid resuscitation process. He said the event was not to scold young drivers for bad behaviour, but to teach them about what could go wrong, and how it affected people’s lives. Static displays by Yarra Ranges

Though Cr Callanan said the attendance for the event was lower than expected, he said he hoped that young drivers would take “one thing” away from the evening, which could potentially save lives. “I asked the parents and the young drivers to take one thing away ... pick one thing out of the program tonight, and said to them that ‘Actions change attitudes quicker than attitudes change
actions’,” he said. “They’ll remember a bit of skill from the CPR side of things, or they just help a mate by not allowing them to drive if they think they’re drunk, or telling them to put their seatbelt on that one thing could potentially save the lives of not just them, but others as well.” Casey MP, Tony Smith, partnered with Cr Callanan to run the evening, and congratulated the team on their “very powerful presentations”.
“It was an eye-opening night,” he said. “The young drivers and their parents who attended were incredibly engaged and left with extremely valuable information.” The Road Safety Forum was held just before the beginning of the Easter long weekend, which sees police ramp up road safety awareness, due to an increased number of fatalities and crashes over the four-day weekend. Cr Callanan said that drivers of all

ages should be aware of fatigue and make stops and rest-breaks on long journeys, as well as swapping drivers. “A half-hour extra in your trip to get somewhere isn’t going to be the end of the world, really,” he said. “However, if your child dies in the car - for everybody that has kids, that’s the end of the world for them.” He said that RoadWHYZ also runs presentations for schools. New performance hits the rare limits By JESSE GRAHAM A SPOKEN-word performance about the final days of the Tasmanian Tiger will grace stages in Healesville and Upwey in April, exploring present and past themes of extinction and gender equality in Australia. They Saw a Thylacine is a play that tells two stories - one, of a Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) tracker, played by Sarah Hamilton; the other, about a zoo-keeper’s daughter, played by Justine Campbell. The show is set in 1936, shortly before the world’s last known Tasmanian Tiger, a female named Benjamin, died in captivity at Beaumaris Zoo. Ms Hamilton said Ms Campbell’s character is based on Alison Reid, who was trained by her father to run the zoo, but the board of management would not allow her to take over her father’s post, due to her being a woman. “That actually had a big impact on the last Thylacine,” Ms Hamilton said. “They said to her, ‘We won’t pay you to run the zoo, but you can keep living in the curator’s cottage,’ which was just outside of the zoo, ‘And in return, you have to give us your services whenever required’.” But Reid never received keys to the zoo, and though she could hear Benjamin calling at night, she was unable to help the animal, which died of

Meanwhile, Ms Hamilton said her character, Beatie, who is trying to find and capture a live Thylacine to sell to the zoo, is based on stories told by Tasmanians while the play was being researched.

She said the play explored extinction and gender equality - issues still important to this day, with the former being a focus of the work at Healesville Sanctuary. “I think this story is all too contemporary, because we have so many species on the brink of extinction at the moment,” Ms Hamilton said. “They (Healesville Sanctuary) have a great breeding program for the Tassie devils, but the devils are all but gone in the wild now. “We wear clothes that are contemporary in the show - we don’t wear period pieces ... we keep it in the here-and-now, because the issues are very relevant.” Though the show contains other characters, every part is performed by Ms Hamilton and Ms Campbell, in a spoken-word format. They Saw a Thylacine will be performed at Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre on Thursday 14 April, and at Healesville’s Memo Hall on Friday 15 April. Tickets are $36, or $32 for concession holders, with a $28 ticket price for groups of more than six. SMOKE Stack Rhino are back with a new single ‘Screwdriver Girls’. Co-written by the band’s new line up, Screwdriver Girls came to life after vocalist Dave Sirianni brought the bare bones of the song’s grungey skeleton to the jam room. Appropriating an idea written on a dusty banjo, the track was then given a heavy dose of hillbilly, with guitarist Ash King’s love for bluegrass and Stevie Ray Vaughan shining through. The song is the also the first Smoke Stack tune to feature the disco influence of the band’s rhythm section, with drummer Jeremy Berg and bassist Shane Andison holding things together with a feel reminiscent of John Butler Trio’s recent material. While the song aptly demonstrates the evolution of the band, it also suggests a portent of Smoke Stack Rhino’s intentions on its upcoming full-length record, fusing together a diversity of influences and musicianship to craft a unique brand of Australian blues rock. Fresh from an east-coast tour, Smoke Stack Rhino will be at The Who Club in Warburton on Friday, 1 April.

By PETER DOUGLAS MANY up-and-coming junior footballers from around the Yarra Ranges have been rewarded for their hard work, with Eastern Ranges recently announcing its Under 18s squad for 2016. The Ranges enjoyed an outstanding season last year, losing the grand final by just 12 points to Oakleigh Chargers. The squad offers a pathway towards becoming drafted into the AFL system, as well as a chance to hone their skills within an elite environment. The opportunity will also grant them access to mentors to help guide them through the competitive environment. Some of the present-day stars to come out of the Eastern Ranges system include Collingwood forward Travis Cloke and Greater Western Sydney’s first pick of 2011, Jonathon Patton. Included in this year’s squad is a strong contingent of junior talents from both the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League and the Eastern Football League, who will be vying for game-time. Motoring A big piece of Wolf Creek By KATH GANNAWAY EMMA Hall has a lot of memories tied up in the HG Holden Premier that she has transformed into her own little piece of Wolf Creek in Woori Yallock. It’s not all about the Australian drama/horror film either. The 40-year-old Woori Yallock mother of five has fond memories of driving around in her dad’s old XR Ford, nights out at the drive-ins with her brother and her in pyjamas in the back seat, and those shiny vinyl seats that you could fry an egg on on a hot day. “You’d get branded by the seatbelt buckle and have to peel yourself off the seat if you didn’t position your beach towel exactly right,” she said with great affection for the breed. Keith - named after Keith Richards, another old classic who just keeps going, is her ‘for me’ project. In fact, over time, it’s become a family project with Emma’s three sons and two daughters, although a little embarrassed to be seen in Keith at first, sharing a lot of quality time in the workshop. Emma purchased the car as a backyard find, for very little money, but with huge potential. It was never her intention to restore Keith - how could you? “I wanted to create an old workhorse, outback theme which would invoke a lot of memories - the sort of thing you would see if you were travelling in the middle of the outback,” she said. It had 800,000ks on the clock and was a mess when she took it on. “The first thing I did was rip out the old carpet and clean it up, which took about three months. “I had no idea if the motor was even going to run but with clean fuel and a service, it kicked over on the first turn of the key.” That was a sweet moment. Turning Keith into a replica of the infamous Wolf Creek car required imagination, a handy paint product that gives the rust effect that most people want to get rid of, and a lot of hard work in the workshop. Car parts in the dishwasher and panels in the bathtub are nothing unusual in the Hall household. sponse,” Emma said. “There is never a moment when someone is not prodding it, remarking on it and wanting to know more about the car and how it has come together. “I hope it’s inspiring others who don’t have a lot of money to spend on a car to go down the road of just capturing the car at its stage in life, admit it’s an old car and it’s not perfect,” she said. She calls it ‘imperfect perfection’. Was it a mid-life crisis fix? “No ... that would be buying a V8,” she says, laughing. But, it was definitely a stage of life project. “Obviously raising five kids, you’re always busy but you find as they are getting older and more independent their needs and wants are a lot less and you have time to do something for yourself.”
