Cancer survivor rises to challenge

Claire laps up life By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

The young mum celebrating in Kardinia Park Pool looks a picture of health. But beneath the smiling exterior lays a nightmare story of devastation, fear and agony. Just seven months ago Lovely

Banks’ Claire Sykes was in hospital unable to breathe without an oxygen mask and incapable of walking more than a few steps. The nightmare began in June when she was a busy 32-year-old wife and mum to two who “really didn’t have time to get sick”. “But after many weeks of pneu-

monia that wasn’t resolving with three rounds of antibiotics, I ended up in hospital to try to figure out why,” Claire recalled. “An exploratory bronchoscopy, a biopsy and a collapsed lung later, I was diagnosed with a carcinoid lung tumour, a very rare neuroendocrine cancer.

“So rare that many doctors had never seen it before or knew anything about it. “Although I’d been very sick, it was such a huge shock to be told I had cancer, especially in my lung considering I was young and had never smoked. Continued page 3

Traders: strip city meters A suburban strip shopping uproar over the prospect of parking meters is proof central Geelong suffers from a lack of free parks, city traders say. Bill Votsaris, who has significant investments in the central business district, said fellow business owners and traders agreed that parking meters must be removed from the city centre. “The debate over parking meters recently has created a public awareness, which has been useful in identifying the real issues,” Mr Votsaris said. “It’s been clear and powerful from commentary from traders in the surrounding areas that if council introduced parking in the shopping strips, it would kill their businesses.

“You can’t ask for more proof than that - it’s what the CBD has been suffering for years. “This isn’t some consultant putting it up on a theoretical basis, this is business owners telling us it would have a significant impact.” Mr Votsaris said he was prepared to speak up on behalf of other city businesses to “rebalance” the debate. “It’s about time the council started working for the ratepayers. The ratepayers who own businesses understand that parking meters have had a negative impact in the CBD - that’s why surrounding shopping strips have risen and the CBD hasn’t.” Mr Votsaris said the meters should be removed altogether. “The council needs to balance its budget in

other ways. They can’t use the meters ... because they have such a negative impact on employment.” City Hall earns more than $8 million from parking meters. Mr Votsaris said extra rates income from planned improvements to the city centre would replace lost revenue from removing the meters within two years. “It would be a shot in the arm for businesses and employment in the city centre.” Mayor Darryn Lyons pushed at council’s last meeting for a report on the potential to expand central Geelong’s free weekend parking. He proposed a review including a full cost/ benefit analysis associated with expanding the free-parking program.

Claire laps up life Continued from page 1 “I was devastated and very scared for myself and my family. “After many tests, scans and agonising days of waiting, we were incredibly relieved to find out I was one of the lucky ones - they’d found it early and it hadn’t yet spread anywhere. “Aggressive surgery was the recommended treatment and with that my prognosis looked good. “So in August last year I underwent major surgery to remove the top half of my left lung and some of my bronchus, which needed to be reconstructed.” Recovery was tough, Claire admitted. “I was on narcotics for severe pain for months, found myself short of breath just walking to the toilet and I had to sleep almost upright in a recliner for weeks before I could prop myself up on pillows to sleep in my own bed again. “But with lots of hard work, and the amazing support and help of my awesome family, friends and medical team, I got through it. “And now, seven months on, other than the occasional twinge in my ribs, and a little shortness of breath, I am pretty much back to normal - my new normal. “And, best of all, I am currently cancer free.” To celebrate her recovery, Claire joined the Cancer Council’s March Charge. The initiative encourages participants to run, ride or swim down cancer this March with the goal of making Australians healthier. And on Thursday she achieved her goal. “This month has been hugely rewarding and positive for me,” Claire enthused. “Having not swum for years but wanting to get into it as a form of regular exercise, I challenged myself to swim 31km in 31 days, for the March Charge. “And I have loved it - everything about it. “I’m feeling fitter and healthier and have much more energy, my friends and family have been joining me in my swims and I’m raising money for cancer, a cause very dear to my heart. “As I charge down the lanes of the pool I try not to think about the burn or the aches or the exhaustion. “I just feel so incredibly grateful and lucky I am out there at all and able take part in this amazing campaign. Seven months ago I never would have dreamt I’d be able to do what I’m doing now.” Visit themarchcharge.com.au to support Claire’s fund-raising efforts.

In Brief Jobs ‘threat’ More than 50 Barwon Health jobs are at risk amid a state-federal funding dispute, according to the Victorian Government. But Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley said Victoria was using “sneaky accounting tricks” to claim the $3.5 million of Commonwealth funding, to which it had no entitlement.

Trustees named Six new trustees for Kardinia Park’s stadium will help ensure its “exciting and secure future”, according to Victorian Sports Minister John Eren. Gillian Costa, Michael Malouf, Simon Guthrie, Jane den Hollander, Rebecca Casson and Libby Mears joined Kardinia Park Trust leader Steve Bracks at the “dawn of an exciting new era” for the stadium, Mr Eren said.

Chief hailed A “robust recruitment process” has led to Barwon Health finding its new chief executive officer working in southern Adelaide, chairman John Stekelenburg has announced. The experience of Southern Adelaide Local Health Network chief Belinda Moyes (pictured) would enhance Barwon Health’s standing as a “major training and education provider”, he said.

Pokie poke Geelong Cats president Colin Carter has criticised football as “complicit” in community harm from pokies despite his club making over $10 million from two gaming venues last year. The Cats would strive for best-practice in gaming operations but could only rid itself of pokies if offered a “great price”, Carter told the Herald Sun. WINNERS: Kaitlyn and Aiden Meyer with their medals.

Rookies slay Dragon competitors By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A pair of young Norlane water dragon paddlers has managed to score a swag of medals at the Australian Dragon Boat Championships after only three months training. Aiden Meyer, 12, captured two silver medals and his sister Kaitlyn, 16, captured a silver and bronze. Geelong Water Dragons secretary Margaret Harry said the pair had worked hard since joining the club just three months ago. “Club members have supported them with training and transport to get them into the inaugural junior state team which competed in the Australian championships in Adelaide over Easter. “They have shown huge potential that has been rewarded with these medals,” Ms Henry said.

Aidan placed in the under-18 open 200 metres and 500 metres small boat events. Kaitlyn scored in the 200 metre mixed small boat the under-18 two kilometre mixed standard boat events. Senior Geelong Water Dragons paddlers Denis Jenkins and Lauren Vallance also brought home bronze medals as state representatives. Ms Henry said she hoped the success of Aidan and Kaitlyn would encourage more young paddlers to take up the sport. Geelong Water Dragons will hold a morning of dragon boating on 17 April, with coaching from the Australian team head coach before participating in a series of races. Double Take What’s a mohawk worth? If you’re Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons, it’s been worth votes, photo opportunities and social media hits. But changing it for a man-bun has made little difference to the federal electoral prospects of the colourful personality, according to online bookie Sportsbet. The agency this week firmed the odds in favour of a Lyons tilt at Corio and his chances of winning. Sportsbet’s Ben Bulmer said the hirsute tidyup by Cr Lyons, ditching the mohawk in favour of a man bun, would not change the odds. “A man bun is only one decent can of hairspray away from being a mohawk,” Mr Bulmer observed. The Cats flavour on Channel Nine’s long-running The Footy Show has increased a third with number-one ticket-holder Rebecca Mad-

dern joining as co-host. Replacing Gary Lyon, Maddern will trade footy barbs with former Geelong ruckman John ‘Sam’ Newman and ex-Cats forward Billy Brownless. The show has been criticised for blokiness, so fans will be keen to see whether Maddern cleans up the boys’ act. Another Geelong lady in the house also had a big impact on one bloke in particular this week. Mayoress Elissa Friday returned from an extended stay in England, much to the delight of fiance Darryn Lyons. The mayor had been rather glum the past few months, posting mournful messages on his Twitter account. But that all changed this week. “So happy”, he posted late on Wednesday.

Praise for keeping athletes on track A group of volunteers keeping athletics on track in Geelong has earned public recognition. Two members of the John Landy Athletics Field committee of management - Ron Palmer and Stuart Robley - have been involved for more than 40 years. Geelong councillor John Irvine presented commemorative plaques to committee members on Wednesday. The committee formed in 1961 after an agreement between the council and Geelong Guild Athletics Club to develop Landy Field’s track and other facilities. “Thanks to the committee’s diligent stewardship, Landy Field has become a renowned regional athletics track and an integral part of Geelong’s sporting landscape,” Cr Irvine said.

SERVICE: Cr Jock Irvine presents commemorative plaques to Landy Field committee members Geoff Gray, Ron Palmer and Stuart Robley. “Landy Field has given thousands of young people the chance to be active and participate in Little Athletics over the years.”

Young and old in pier, ATM arsons

JOIN US: Cloverdale Calisthenics College members Jasmine Dimovski, Aleisha Allen, Kelsey Mueller, Paisley Whitley and Bianca Dimovski strike a pose.

Rapid fall hurts calisthenics club By LUKE VOOGT A Corio calisthenics club is fighting for survival after an unprecedented drop in membership this year. Cloverdale Calisthenics College founder and principal Mandy Mueller said the club normally had 70 to 80 members but has just 32 this year. “It’s just been over the last five years we’ve had numbers go down,” she said. “This year we’ve lost about 20. If we go any lower I don’t think we could run.” Ms Mueller, who has 40 years of involvement in calisthenics, began the club at Cloverdale Community Centre in 1994. Her letter-drops and school visits had failed to attract new members, she said. “We’re one of the cheapest things around and I’m kind of at my wits end as to why we are losing numbers.”

Ms Mueller said the not-for-profit club now operated at Hendy Street Hall with volunteer coaches and staff. “We all do it for the kids.” The club catered for members aged from two-and-a-half to adults but had been forced to drop its two youngest age groups, Ms Mueller said. But it’s not all doom and gloom for the club, set to compete in state titles at Bendigo this year. “I don’t push competiveness, we’re more about having fun,” Ms Mueller said. She considered calisthenics perfect for children who enjoyed gymnastics and dancing. “It’s got a bit of everything. “You can always pick a calisthenics girl, they present themselves really nicely.” Ms Mueller said more information was available by phoning her 0418 559 241.

Police have arrested men at either end of the age scale for separate alleged arson incidents in Geelong and Portarlington this week. Police charged three youths in relation to a pier fire at Portarlington, while a 71-year-old faces court for allegedly setting an ATM alight in Geelong. The three younger men allegedly set the pier ablaze in the early hours of Tuesday. Victoria Police said Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested the trio separately at Portarlington the following day. The damage bill from the blaze on the small pier off The Esplanade could reach $100,000, police said. Detectives identified the three men “within a short amount of time” after commencing the investigation. One of the men tried to flee but was apprehended soon after, police said. “About 7.45am (Wednesday) morning police moved in and executed a search warrant at a Payne Street, Portarlington, property where a 20-year-old

man was arrested. “A second man, also from Portarlington, presented himself to the Geelong Police Station about 2pm. “Both men have been charged with arson and criminal damage by fire and have been bailed to appear at the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 11 May. “The third man fled from police when they attended an address on Hereford Street, Portarlington, about 12.30pm but was arrested in Waterview Crescent shortly after.” Victoria Police said detectives expected to charge the 18-year-old Portarlington man with fire and drug offences. Police laid the ATM fire arrest on Wednesday after releasing surveillance camera images the previous day as part of an appeal to the public for information. Victoria Police said detectives had arrested and charged a Norlane man, 71, over the arson attack on the ANZ Bank ATM in Pakington St, Geelong West.

Jobs pain ‘fault of all-talk Andrews’ The Liberal opposition has attacked Premier Daniel Andrews over Geelong’s rising unemployment numbers. Treasury spokesman Michael O’Brien said new Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed unemployment in Geelong had risen by 1.8 per cent to seven per cent in February. Geelong had lost more than 1000 jobs since Mr Andrews took office, he said. “Daniel Andrews is asleep at the wheel. “At the last election he promised 100,000 fulltime jobs for Victorians and so far the community has seen very little from the government. Daniel Andrews is all talk and no action. This government doesn’t care about Geelong and regional areas. “An unemployment rate of seven per cent in Gee-

long shows that this region has been badly let down by Daniel Andrews’ failure to have a jobs plan.” South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said the October closure of Geelong’s Ford factory would only exacerbate the city’s jobs pain. “These are worrying figures for the families of Geelong,” he said. But Employment Minister Jacinta Allan said the government had already created 100,000 jobs in Victoria, including more than 13,000 in Geelong. “I won’t take lectures from Michael O’Brien and Andrew Katos on jobs given it was (their) government’s inaction, under-investment and savage cuts to education and TAFE that caused unemployment in Geelong to skyrocket to 8.2 per cent.”

Experience Alta Pro at Hearing Aid Specialists - Geelong. The hearing device customised exclusively for you. Your life. Your world. “Marcel has tailor made a specific music program for my Alta Pros which has given me the ability to hear the high notes on the piano again that I have been missing for so long. I was also out with friends for dinner at a very noisy restaurant recently and I was able to understand multiple conversations. This is the sort of thing we just take for granted, but when you haven’t heard these sounds for years, it’s pretty exciting.” - Andrew

WHEN I left school I began working in factories amid loud machinery and, for fun, I played piano in bands three nights weekly without considering the damage to my ears. Eventually I started havingtrouble understanding conversations and noticing high notes on the piano were disappearing. I started lip-reading, trying to piece stories together from the words I could recognise. I eventually had a series oftests and stopped playing

77 Yarra Street, Geelong Ph:1800 1333 27 5223 2770 www.hasg.com.au

in bands to avoid any further damage. Now I have to wear hearing protection any time I’m around loud noises. Then I was advised to wearhearing devices, which I’ve worn for seven years with great success. New digital hearing aids canbe programmed by welltrained professionals to suit individual needs. Many digital aids on the market, nearly all with bluetooth connectivity to mobile phones or TVs. I recently contacted Hearing Aid Specialists, at 77 Yarra St, Geelong, which was offering trials of new products. The clinic’s Marcel Timmers and I had a long chat about my hearing history and he tested me to determine the best outcome for my hearing loss. A pair of Oticon Alta Pro hearing devices was programmed for me to try. I immediately noticed howclear everything sounded. The Alta Pro’s noise compression allowed me to focus on speech around me while quietening traffic noise. It is very noticeable how

well the noise compression works. I was out with friends for dinner at a very noisy restaurant recently and was able to understand multiple conversations, which I think was due to the directional microphones following where I was looking and the computer doing all the background noise-cancelling to make my dinner out a very enjoyable experience. My previous hearing aids could cancel out background noise but were less clear and accurate. I’ve also noticed a big change when listening to radio in my car. The Alta Pro devices seem to pick out the announcer’s voice from the mix of car engine and road noise. Marcel has tailored a specific music program for my Alta Pros, allowing me to hear high notes on the piano again. I can now enjoy conversations with family and friends, watch movies, TV, listen to music and enjoy life again. Anyone with hearing problems should contact Marcel at Hearing Aid Specialists to enjoy life again, too.

Extra energy for northern suburbs Geelong refinery operator Viva Energy will donate $3 million to support mental health and substance abuse programs in the city’s northern suburbs. The program, called Jigsaw, will be in partnership with headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation and Northern Futures to address joblessness in disadvantaged areas. Viva chief Scott Wyatt said the program would help drive positive social change and encourage support from employees. “Part of Viva’s program is geared towards building and supporting role models in communities capable of making a difference to address mental health and substance abuse,” Mr Wyatt said. “Through Viva’s support, our national partnership with headspace will create new opportunities for 12-25 year olds to reduce the stigma of mental illness among young people and encourage those at risk to seek help.” The program would train mental health role models to help them share their stories, he said. The Northern Futures partnership in Geelong would assist community members most at risk of joblessness in Geelong’s northern suburbs.

“The Viva Energy Role Model Scholarship Program will subsidise participants undertaking a certificate one, two or three training course, including associated expenses such as transport and meals.” headspace CEO Chris Tanti said 75 per cent of mental health disorders emerged before the age of 25. “By treating these issues early and providing a holistic model of support, the risk of them developing into more serious problems, including suicide, is greatly decreased,” Mr Tanti said. “Building the capacity of these local youth reference groups is a really important and valuable role that Viva Energy is generously supporting,” he said. Northern Futures head Lou Brazier said the project would deliver tailored training and education programs to people facing multiple barriers to employment. “These scholarships will help us engage job seekers who are hardest to reach and need more individualised support than traditional training and employment services can provide,” Ms Brazier said. “Northern Futures achieves outcomes from training to employment almost double the national average for similar programs.”

$2.7b election ‘wish list’ A $2.7 billion wish list will confront candidates for the region’s two federal seats at this year’s election. $1.5 billion for improving Geelong’s transport links with Melbourne is the biggest-ticket item on the G21 list, ahead of $892 million for community infrastructure at Armstrong Creek. About $100 million for revitalising central Geelong and $30 million for a Yarra Street pier to berth cruise liners also made the cut, while uncosted priorities for commitments include an international terminal for Avalon Airport. G21, an alliance body lobbying on behalf of the region’s five municipalities, identified the projects among a list of 12 requiring federal support ahead of this year’s election. G21 said it was putting candidates “on notice” that it would keep a tally of their commitments to each project.

Voters could track a tally sheet at g21.com.au, the organisation said in its E-news bulletin on Wednesday 30 March. “When you cast your vote in the upcoming federal election you deserve to know which of the region’s priority projects political parties and their candidates support, or don’t support,” it said. “That’s why G21 is again producing a tally sheet of the major parties’ commitments against relevant G21 2016 Priority Projects in the run-up to the election. “They are projects the G21 board has previously short-listed as being most beneficial to the economic and social health of the entire region.” G21 said it would regularly update the tally sheet as candidates announced commitments. “We urge you to lobby your local candidates on behalf of the G21 Priority Projects and to follow the candidates’ commitments through the

G21 tally sheet.” The organisation said it would soon launch a social media campaign to support the push for funding commitments. The Turnbull Government has yet to set a date for the election but pundits expect voters will go to the polls in July. The Government has a marginal hold on the seat of Corangamite, which has won the lion’s share of local funding commitments at recent federal elections. Labor holds Corio as a safe seat, although commentators have speculated that the possibly nomination of Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons as a candidate could make the electorate marginal. G21 is a formal alliance of government, business and community bodies in the City of Greater Geelong, Borough of Queenscliffe and the shires of Surf Coast, Golden Plains and Colac Otway.

Geelong’s mayor is a hot tip to contest the Federal seat of Corio at this year’s election, according to Sportsbet. com.au. The agency this week had the flamboyant mayor priced at $1.75 to run in Corio and offered odds of $2.60 for him to win the seat from Labor’s Darryn Lyons. Richard Marles. Mr Marles was priced at $1.01 to retain Corio but Sportsbet said his price would drift to $1.45 if Lyons entered the fray. Councillor Lyons would be most likely to run as an independent, Sportsbet said, pricing the likelihood at $1.10. The agency offered odds of $6 for him to run for the Liberals and a long $21 for the Greens. Sportsbet offered $34 for him to become a federal minister and $251 to become Prime Minister by 2019. “The fake abs, mohawk and controversial stunts have solidified Lyon’s position as Geelong’s highest profile politician and he looks set to capitalise on this profile in a bid to secure a federal seat,” Sportsbet’s Ben Bulmer said. “Richard Marles remains the favourite but we expect Lyons to push him to the wire if he decides to run. “(It) will be interesting to see which way he goes. “The lure of federal parliament must be significant but he has a pretty good gig down there at the moment and I can’t see him losing his position as mayor at the next election.” Cr Lyons was also priced as a short $1.15 favourite to be re-elected Geelong’s mayor later this year if he failed to stand for federal parliament. Last week he told the Indy that he had a number of personal and business issues to resolve before deciding whether to run for Corio.

AERIAL MOSQUITO TREATMENTS FINISH FOR 2015-16 SEASON Our aerial mosquito treatment program has concluded for the season on the Bellarine Peninsula.

In compliance with the City’s approval from the Commonwealth government, helicopter treatments are prohibited in protected wetlands between 15 March and 15 August each year. This approval protects endangered birds that migrate to the wetlands on the Bellarine Peninsula in the winter months. During the 2015-2016 mosquito season, we successfully treated larvae in over 1000 hectares of mosquito breeding sites by helicopter. Our monitoring and customer reports showed that we achieved excellent results with low mosquito numbers during the majority of the season. Our officers will continue to monitor breeding sites during the winter months and ground-based treatments will occur as needed.

Mosquito levels may increase slightly in April and May if the weather remains warm and rainfall increases.

Remember to control mosquitoes from breeding around your home by regularly emptying water containing receptacles and protect yourself against mosquitoes by wearing clothing that covers your arms and legs and using an effective insect repellent. For more information about the our mosquito management program, visit our website www.geelongaustralia.com or contact us on 5272 5272.

OUR STORY: AUGUSTINO – AN INSPIRATION TO MANY! AUGUSTINO MOEDU – LEADER OF THE KARENNI COMMUNAL WELFARE COMMUNITY GEELONG As leader of the Karenni Communal Welfare Community Geelong Augustino’s achievements are well-known among the Karen and Karenni community from Burma. But his story is one that can provide motivation to a much-wider community. Augustino arrived in Geelong in July 2009 with his wife and has three children, after living in a Karenni refugee camp in northern Thailand. He had been working as a Maths teacher in the refugee camp as he was a teacher at a Catholic Missionary school in Burma. Since arriving in Geelong, Augustino’s main concern has been to provide for a decent living for his family. He has toiled hard, as the main bread winner of the family, the elected leader of the Karenni Community of Geelong and the role model of many others within the community. Augustino has completed a number of courses and has worked closely with the City of Greater Geelong to promote cultural diversity and engage community members in Council initiatives and programs. Augustino identified that he would like to own a business and was supported in completing a Cleaning course via Whittington Works Alliance with the aim of having his own cleaning business. He is now employed with a cleaning company and looking to the future. Augustino’s qualities of being hardworking and having persistence, perseverance, loyalty, commitment, a vision and being very kind set him apart. Even more so that he is not one to allow setbacks to get in his way. Augustino has a prosthetic arm – the result of stepping on a land mine in Burma. But that does not stop him from completing many of the physical tasks involved with cleaning. During the cleaning program the class trainer commended Augustino for always being the first to volunteer to attempt practical tasks and mentoring other students. At the end of the program he undertook work experience with a local cleaning company that cleans primary schools. He made such a positive impression that the school asked to have him appointed permanently. Augustino and his community members have also been supported in work opportunities, including cleaning and interpreting by other agencies. Augustino’s message to any new arrival to Geelong is to never give up. “Coming to a new country, new culture and new systems can be very daunting and there are many challenges to be overcome,” he said. “Keep going. It all starts with a first step. Take that step”. “Learn more of the new country, its employment pathways, job culture and embrace them all. To do this you do not have to forget who you are and where you have come from.” The City of Greater Geelong strives to give opportunities to people to make a better life and living in Geelong. We support community groups in the celebration of their cultures and any other expression of their unique identities. Our community is richer by having people of diverse backgrounds. Our rich multicultural fabric and economic benefits are enhanced by people like Augustino.

Young girls suffer ‘racist attack’ Police are appealing for witnesses after three girls wearing Muslim headdress were assaulted and racially abused in a Norlane park last week. Investigators were told the three girls, aged 15, 12 and 11, were at the Sparks Road reserve on Wednesday 23 March when they were approached by a group of unknown youths, about 5.30pm. The group of about 10 youths, a mix of boys and girls aged between seven and 16, racially vilified and assaulted the three girls, forcibly removing their headdresses. The group began to punch them and as the girls attempted to call police, took their phones and smashed them. Police have been told the unknown group then

started throwing rocks towards the trio before leaving the area. The three girls suffered minor injuries. Investigators believe a woman was also with the unknown group of youths at the time of the incident. Acting Senior Sergeant Jonathan Parish said the incident was of great concern to Victoria Police. “We are taking this incident very seriously. It is a sickening attack,” Act Sen Sgt Parish said. “It’s extremely alarming given the girls’ ages. They should be able to go to a local park and enjoy time in the community without being subjected to this type of behaviour.

“We are mindful there is a degree of racial tension out there, not just in the Geelong community, it’s on the rise everywhere.” Act Sen Sgt Parish said information was being provided to police. “We are confident that we can bring these youths to justice. I would urge them to come forward and speak up and have this dealt with before we have to come knocking on doors. “There was an older female with the group who holds important information and I would urge her to come forward.” Act Sen Sgt Parish said police were concerned that one of the group was as young as seven. “It is a concern that we have young impres-

sionable minds that are being led by older kids engaging in these racial and religious attacks on the community “Religious attacks and racial vilification are real so we need to get the strong message out.” Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to crimestoppersvic.com.au Police advised anyone who witnessed, or was subject to, racism, discrimination or victimisation on the basis of religion, culture or nationality to inform Victoria Police.

Technology is ‘key to growing digital world’ but some remain locked out People who are unable to use technology will eventually be “cut off from their communities”, a Geelong councillor has warned. Councillor Rod Macdonald’s sombre assessment followed an inaugural Communities Accessing Technology forum that urged community groups to help expand “digital inclusion” in Geelong. “In the future everything that can be digitised will be, so if people can’t access technology they will be cut off from their communities,” Cr Macdonald said. “It’s therefore crucial that we raise awareness of the issue of digital inclusion and partner together to address skills gaps and engage at this community group level.” The forum was part of Na-

tional Year of Digital Inclusion activities to enhance technology access and skills among segments of the community including the elderly and disadvantaged. Author and forum speaker Brad Howarth addressed the need to ensure equity of technology-access across society. “Technology will provide benefits to society as a whole but will technology benefit the whole of society? “This is the question we need to ask and have at least partially answered if we are to address the issue of digital inclusion,” Mr Howarth said. Who needs a tin man (Indy, 18 March)? Is Geelong going to the scrap heap? Is the mayor looking in the wrong place for a new heart? Maybe he should try his Bible, the Old Testament. Yes, Ezekial, just six books after The Psalms, chapter 36. The answer is in verse 26. If we follow its prompts we will see a new awakened Geelong. Try it. J Walters Bell Post Hill posal, there seems to be a reluctance to test the claim. An unlikely recent theory supposed the cost would amount to many times the cost of our coming election. This argument was used in supporting the case that politicians should decide the issue. Present electioneering in the USA shows that many people are concerned with politicians being out of touch with the people they serve, being influenced by vocal minorities or the promise of financial support from groups. We have seen our CFMEU and its donations having this power over Labor and the Greens, while some business people purchase access to Liberal leaders. I urge our federal representative, Sarah Henderson, to support the commitment her party has made in allowing the people to express their opinion and to ensure it is not taken from the people by a vocal minority. In response to Hand Up Not Hand Out (Buckets and Bouquets, 18 March), it’s not just unemployed “dependents” who require social services. Being employed doesn’t make anyone immune from developing a mental illness, abusing drugs etcetera and requiring one or more of these services. Social services, especially in Geelong, are far from drenched in funding. If that were the case the 15 unemployment services we had would not now only be five, service organisations would not have to merge to stay open and waiting lists for help would not be up to six months. No-one is immune to needing some form of social service at some point in their life. Without it some would literally die. Anyone who has had to deal with Centrelink will say they are only on it because the alternative is being broke and on the street. Funding more of these much-needed services would create far more jobs than the floating Christmas tree. I would rather say I come from a Geelong known for world-class community service organisations that support its citizens and provide jobs for locals than saying, “I come from that city with the ridiculously expensive, floating silver thing”. FINALLY FRIDAY

Art gift under the surface By ALANA MITCHELSON Torquay painter Sue Woolnough’s Bali-inspired series of watercolour and acrylic works will raise money for a cause close to her heart. The charity work of Woolnough’s sister, Jan Johannesen, in the Balinese village of Munti Gunung inspired the To Bali and Back exhibition. “Many people see Bali as a wonderful holiday destination, which it is, but I’m fascinated by what lies beneath the surface,” Woolnough explained. “Jan’s chance encounter 10 years ago with a little street kid selling bracelets to tourists has led to an incredible story of determination and inspiration in her drive to make a difference.” Johannesen single-handedly runs the Bali Smiles charity, which offers education sponsorships for street kids, provides rice through a Feed A Family initiative, organises the building of toilets, water wells and homes, and equips and staffs the Bali Smiles Health Clinic. Proceeds raised from the exhibition will go toward the clinic to buy medicines and pay the $250 monthly wage of its doctor. The funding will ensure free health care remains available for poverty-stricken villagers in need. Woolnough’s works reflect Bali’s tropical environment. She has grouped them thematically, beginning with a range of smaller watercolors with a delicate approach to tropical plant life and continuing on to larger, bolder acrylic artworks. The artist had been lucky enough to follow her bucket list and view artworks by the old masters and contemporary artists across the world, she said. “I enjoy discovering the effects of different paint colors merging and colliding. Each painting presents its own puzzles and I find tremendous satisfaction in working through these challenges. “My brush is like a conductor’s baton and my

aim is to make my colors sing. We all respond to art in a different way and have individual tastes and preferences. “There are no rules. Something about a work

will just strike a chord.” To Bali and Back opens Tuesday at Geelong’s Little Creatures Brewery and continues until the end of the month.

Everyone knows something of the classic story of Wuthering Heights and its two key characters Cathy and Heathcliff. But fewer these days have read Emily Brontë’s gothic masterpiece with its plot twists and interwoven characters. A modern reimagining for the stage brings new life and insight to the story set against the bleakness of the Yorkshire moors and the grim hearts of the characters. Presented by shake and stir theatre co and Queensland Performing Arts Centre, this re-working of a classic story features breathtaking design and a stellar cast. Wuthering Heights tells the tale of Heathcliff, a mysterious boy rescued from the street and brought to the manor estate where he develops a passionate bond with Catherine Earnshaw. As time passes, Heathcliff and Catherine’s relationship deepens to the point of dangerous obsession, leading Catherine to marry another man. Overcome with jealousy, Heathcliff flees, only to return, years later, ready to exact revenge on those he believed ruined his one chance at happiness. Wuthering Heights storms into The Playhouse as part of GPAC’s 2016 Deakin University Theatre Season from 14 to 16 April.

BAWDY: Rodney Rude.

Rude Rodney’s a legendary laugh He started his career at age 11, singing on the Pepsi Cola Show on Radio 2BS Bathurst. As a teenage musician, Rodney started changing the words to songs to create parodies, later becoming an Elvis impersonator. Rodney’s later career was heavily influenced by his time working on showgrounds in a carnival act. In the early 1960s, he worked as a busker in Sydney and went on to busk all over Europe. He spent 15 years working in barrooms and strip clubs across Canada and the US, releasing five independent stand-up comedy albums featuring a large repertoire of original songs. Having hit sales figures in the millions, Rodney Rude’s impact on stand-up comedy through vinyl, tape, CD and DVD, has been enormous, with 12 highly successful live stand-up comedy CDs and five DVDs all achieving gold and multiplatinum status. In particular, his album Rodney Rude Live - I Hate, which went to number one on the national album charts, was regarded as a phenomenal result considering it was pure stand-up comedy without any radio airplay for support. Rodney Rude performs at Corio’s Gateway Hotel on 9 April.

Win double passes to Lah-Lah show The stars of Lah-Lah’s Adventures will be live on stage in Geelong next week as part of a national tour. Tour and ticket information is available from lah-lah.com. Geelong Coast Kids is giving away six double passes to next week’s show.

As a boy, a teacher once told Rodney Keft that he was a worthless troublemaker who would never amount to anything and that when he grew up people would only laugh at him. Two out of three ain’t bad. Better known as stand-up comedian Rodney Rude, that young boy has enjoyed one of Australia’s longest and most successful comedy careers. People have been laughing at him and his jokes for 45 years and he will readily admit to have made some trouble in his time. The bawdy comedian most famously challenged obscenity charges on a freedom of speech defence all the way to the Supreme Court, paving the way for “adult” performances by live performers since. A lesser-known achievement was his foundational involvement in setting up the Sydney Comedy Store, reaching its peak in the 1980s under his guiding hand. The success of his first album made Rodney Rude a household name, and his catch phrase, “You know what I hate?” has passed into Australian colloquial speech. After crafting a long successful career in a notoriously fickle industry Rodney still has the most recognisable laugh in showbiz.

Our Bistro is also serving A-la-carte.

Muhammad Abbas, 38, whose family has been cleaning ears since the 1500s, says he struggles to clean more than 20 pairs of ears a day.” (The Age) Here are some facts: * Over 7000 people attend hospitals each year with injuries to their ear canals by using cotton buds. * Most common problems associated with cotton buds are infection; irritation to the canal; and hearing loss associated with pushing wax down and blocking the eardrum. Always remember: You shouldn’t stick any ob-

ject smaller than your elbow into your ear! If your ears are blocked, see an ear nurse for gentle micro-suction ear cleaning. Phone: 1300 260 750 Crystal Clear Ears or book online at www.crystalclearclinic.com.au

Revolutionary hearing In 2011, Waurn Ponds Hearing clinic was the first clinic in Geelong to introduce trial hearing aids which could be adjusted to whichever level of technology a client chose to trial. This allowed many more people to “try before you buy” rather than defer their decision a few more years. Once again we are leading a revolutionary change by introducing an empowering way to trial hearing aids. Bernafon has created a unique Hearing aid trial system. We all know how it feels to be uncertain about a product. We want to be sure that the product we’re going to buy is the right one for us. Hearing aids come in different performance categories for different hearing losses and preferences. The goal of the Beflex trial hearing aids is to help determine which performance category will be just right for you. Your audiologist will program your trial hearing aids with up to three performance categories. Wear the Beflex aids in your everyday life, at home and on the go. Change between performance categories with just a push of a button on the aids or remote control. At the follow-up appointment you will be able to say which performance category you preferred in situations that were important to you. Beflex combines the best of professional guidance with personal experience to allow you to make an informed decision on your hearing health. Waurn Ponds Hearing Clinic is a local independent audiological practice. Their Hearing Healthcare expert helps you choose the best hearing solution for your current hearing needs. If you have any questions, please call them on 5245 7940 or go to their website, waurnpondshearing.com. au

Healthy conquest BODY Conquest has been changing physiques and achieving marvellous results with its clients for many years. Body Conquest’s director and nutritional expert Ingrid Barclay said the major difference was that Team BC addressed the missing Ingrid Barclay link to success. “Yes, we look at resistance training, we address cardio requirements and we can overhaul clients’ nutrition to get them eating for fat loss, improved health and far greater energy levels,” she said. “But we also address emotional eating behaviours such as bingeing, cheating, not sticking to a plan so you do achieve the body you want. “To change your body you must reprogram your thinking and change your belief systems about food and exercise.” One of Ingrid’s strategies to long-term physique success is to ask oneself “Is my HEC in check?” HEC stands for hunger, energy, cravings. “If these three things are managed and all in order then your nutrition is balanced and you will be able to maintain your results on a longterm basis. So no more yo-yo dieting and failure cycles,” she says. “Carbohydrates have been really demonised by the media and some diet ideologies. But carbs are imperative in a balanced and healthy diet for a myriad of reasons. “At Body Conquest we pay attention to eating the right foods at the best times to increase performance in training and also for the promotion of overall better health benefits and superior body composition in the long term, not just the short term.” Phone 0424 180 093 or visit bodyconquest. com.au for more information.

HEALTHY LIVING Vascular laser bar gets raised

Reasons to smile

Laser treatment for facial veins, rosacea and more. Proven and effective. Rebecca Harrison, dermal clinician.

If you want to improve that smile, dental veneers are a simple option. Veneers are thin coverings that are placed over the front (visible) part of the tooth. They look like natural teeth. Veneers can be used to correct a wide range of dental issues, such as teeth that are stained and cannot be whitened by bleaching; chipped or worn teeth; crooked or misshapen teeth; and uneven spaces or a large gap between the upper front teeth. Veneers are made of either porcelain or composite resin material. Your dentist will help you choose the material that is best for you. Each type of veneer has its own benefits For details please call 5278 2666. 1218461-LN09-16

It’s the rolls royce of vascular lasers – and it’s at Australian Skin Face Body. Dermal clinician, Rebecca Harrison, says the laser can treat a range of conditions including rosacea, “broken” capillaries on the face, nose and legs, and a range of other vascular lesions. “The Vbeam is presenting them with an alternative to manage the condition and we are seeing excellent results,” says Rebecca. “The Vbeam really is the rolls royce of lasers and we are pleased so many patients are getting excellent results from the treatment,” Rebecca says. Contact them on 5221 2238 to find out about the Vbeam Perfecta Laser and how it can help.

The 1.5T and 3T MRI systems complement each other, and offer features for patients that challenge traditional MRI patient perceptions, including quiet technology, fast scan times, AV equipment for entertainment while being scanned, and outstanding image quality across all body areas. With two MRI systems installed the number of available appointments has been increased, reducing the waiting time for patients to make an appointment. The Geelong Breast clinic still continues to lead the way in delivering the latest in breast imaging for women, with installation of two new 3D mammography systems in March 2016, reducing the waiting list for appointments, and ensuring that all women are provided access to the latest technology available. Patients on the Bellarine Peninsula saw an expansion of services in late 2015 with the introduction of ultrasound services at Drysdale, and the opening of a brand-new practice at Ocean Grove, offering daily ultrasound and x-ray appointments, reducing the need for patients to travel for services. A new Nuclear Medicine SPECT-CT system was installed at St John of God Hospital, which is the only one of its kind in Geelong, offering patients improved image quality, faster scan times and less waiting times for their nuclear medicine examinations. SPORT Cats are ready to counter GWS ‘one Stevie J’ claim By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN “There’s only one Stevie J and now he’s ours.” So runs the GWS Giants marketing spiel for the clash with Geelong in the nation’s capital on Sunday. If round one was about the debut of superstar Patrick Dangerfield, round two will be about the re-acquaintanceship of Steve Johnson and the club where he spent 13 years. Geelong players will be used to meeting former team-mates in different colours. In fact, some of the older ones might be contemplating such a move themselves in a year or two. While defender Andrew Mackie is not quite at that stage, he expects Stevie J to be well prepared for his one-time mates on and off the field. “He’s probably got the notebook out, writing a few (sledges) down now,” Mackie laughed this week. “He’s good fun. He’s quite quick-witted with that sort of stuff. Hopefully we’re having a laugh at the end of the game.” Mackie was noted as never being short of a word on the ground himself, so it would make for an entertainment match-up. But if he had a few sledges up his sleeve, Mackie wasn’t letting on. “I go in with a game plan just to win the game of footy,” he said. “We always try and win the game of footy first and foremost, but you’ve got to have a bit of fun out there as well.” Johnson was traded to Greater Western Sydney after Geelong decided to turn to youth, following a path beaten with the exits of Josh Hunt, James Podsiadly, Paul Chapman, James Kelly and Mathew Stokes. The 32-year-old Johnson kicked two goals for the Giants in his debut against Melbourne last week. While Mackie and his fellow long-term Catters are now used to meeting former team-mates in different hues, it might still be strange for the mercurial forward. “It’s going to be a strange thing for Stevie,” Mackie said. “Obviously he’s a champion of our club and he’s got some great relationships with a lot of us. “But we’re professional AFL footballers. Every weekend we try and go out and prove to ourselves and our team-mates what we’re made of. “I don’t expect any different from Steve this week.”

THAT WAS THEN: Steve Johnson as Cats fans remember him.

Battle-ready Warriors in fighting-fit form

EZE DOES IT: American import Kene Eze celebrates his first goal for North Geelong Warriors. (IVAN DUGANDZIC) 30 GEELONG INDY Friday, 1 April, 2016

North Geelong take on a high flying Kingston away on Saturday in this week’s NPL2 action. The undefeated Kingston has won all their matches so far and most recently took down Melbourne City 2-0, which will no doubt fire a warning to North Geelong to be prepared for a big match, especially with in-form striker Velibor Mitrovic on fire with five goals so far this season. The Warriors will have an air of confidence though, coming off a three match spell with resounding success most recently last weekend’s 2-0 win over Goulburn Valley. A dour first half saw the Warriors unable to combine well enough to leverage an opening goal despite being a man up after 30 minutes when Salawat Al Lafta was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Nicholas Jurcic. Sensing the team needed a change, coach Micky Colina made two changes at half time, bringing in Vito Cichello returning from injury and Kene Eze for his first senior league appearance.

The changes brought about an immediate impact, with Cichello and Michael Simms creating better in the middle and working openings with quicker ball movement. On 58 minutes, Eze zoomed past his marker and found Michael Anderson in the box to dispatch his fifth goal of the year, and lift the mood at Elcho Park. It wasn’t all one way though, and Goulburn Valley gave the Warriors a scare when Anthony Giannopoulos tried to chip keeper Daniel Zilic and narrowly missed. The Warriors momentum was too strong now, and on 81 minutes Eze received a well weighted ball from Matt Thorne on the right flank and eased past his defender and finished with precision past Kile Kennedy for the 2-0 win. Colina was happy with the side’s win, but more so relieved that they were able to lift the tempo and take their opponents out of the match. “We could have been sharper, but no complaints,” Colina summed up.

Plenty of meat on Easter fish ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Mostly calm conditions over Easter allowed anglers to bag an impressive array of fish. Corio Bay gave up excellent numbers of flathead for anglers who drifted the channel edges and spoil grounds. Pinkie snapper were also taken, some reaching 50cm. Clifton Springs’ whiting were on the chew, with boats off the Dell bagging fish to 37cm. Pippies were the best bait. Squid were still holding over the shallow grass beds, although they were down in size anglers. Size 2.5 jigs accounted for some respectable bags. St Leonards also fished well for whiting in the ever-popular area known as Bourke Street. Nearby, the entrance to Swan Bay produced some good-size squid. Daniel Baden and I fished up the Barwon River estuary on Saturday noon to capitalise on the annual Easter influx of elephant fish. Daniel soon caught his first on fresh squid before we both released numerous elephants to 4kg over the next hour. Other anglers fishing the estuary caught silver trevally and whiting on pippies further down the system. The Western District lived up to expectations, with everything from trout to tuna on the bite. Port Fairy and Portland produced bluefin tuna in close around Portland’s North Shore and out wide around the Horseshoe. Casting small lures into surface commotion worked well for the fussy fish in close, while trolling Rapala X-Raps worked well out wide. Kingfish even ventured into the harbour at Portland at times, allowing anglers to target them from the rocks. The many estuary systems dotted around the Western District fished well for bream, with anglers catching fish to 40cm on soft plastics fished hard against the edges. Z-man grubs were a standout lure. Freshwater anglers favoured Lake Bullen Merri, boating Chinook salmon to just over 3kg with the help of down riggers set deep. The odd rainbow trout to 2kg also featured in some bags. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Luht spent a few days fly fishing the freshwater streams around Bright where he caught and released plenty of small but hard-fighting brown trout. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree produced nicely mixed bags of trout and redfin, both taken in the same session by anglers casting and trolling lures. Shallow-running hardbody designs were key to avoiding the weed at Lake Wendouree. Next week should offer some good fishing for whiting just outside Queenscliff harbour on the last of the incoming tide for anglers with fresh tenderised squid. The Barwon estuary should still have elephant fish hanging around when the tidal flow eases. Freshwater fishos should keep Wurdee Boluc Reservoir in mind for large redfin and trout, with casting lures from the lake margins a good strategy.

TRUMPETING: Daniel Baden with an elephant fish from the Barwon River estuary.
